SieMatic arrives in Sheffield by My Fathers Heart ‘Precision engineering’ and ‘made in Sheffield’ – they’re phrases that have become part of the city’s core and have formed its world famous identity. But what’s now bringing these two qualities right into the heart of people’s homes is something you might not expect. It’s easy with cars to name a few luxury, magnificently engineered brands: Porsche, Audi, Ferrari. Or take watches: Cartier, Rolex, Omega. But can you do the same for your favourite homely place – the kitchen? Does SieMatic immediately roll off the tongue? It’s been a quiet but steady evolution of excellence, innovation and pure beauty spanning 60 years. This German brand has just won the German 2016 design awards - the international premium prize of the German Design Council, and for the first time, it’s arrived in Sheffield. So, being a first, it might need a bit of unwrapping… Firstly, it’s just not another off-the-shelf, ready-made batch of components for piecing together by you with a set of instructions in hand. This is literally gorgeous, bespoke engineering designed around the individual customer’s choice and around the atmosphere and aesthetics of their home. The choice of 1,950 colours across finishes in high gloss, matt PUR lacquer, highest quality laminate or fine wood is stunning. From Classic to Urban to Pure minimalist simplicity, SieMatic creates completely unique spaces. The precision designs bring clear lines, generous surfaces, balance, harmony and – importantly - longevity. And if you want a built in herb garden, lighting to suit every mood, or even flock lined, aluminium edged shelves, they’re all part of the SieMatic pallet.

The man behind the new arrival has for the last 20 years been heading up one of the region’s finest handmade kitchens, bedrooms and furniture making companies. Sheffield born Jonathan Coulthard started My Fathers Heart in a small joiner’s workshop in Nether Green following a passion for excellence in design and quality. “It’s all about doing things properly,” says Jonathan. “People don’t always know why something feels gorgeous or looks just right, but the expert knows the work and talent that’s gone into achieving that. And that’s what we’ve always been about.” “We never, ever compromise and that’s also what our customers love. Word gets about and we know they definitely talk. Our commissions have nearly always come that way and have often taken us to some very prestigious locations and VIP clientele.” So why would My Fathers Heart work with SieMatic? Can the two concepts work together?

“It was exactly that uncompromising approach to excellence that finally convinced us to bring SieMatic to Sheffield. In fact, they chose us really,” explained Jonathan. “We can now offer a world renowned product and – if a customer wants it - include handmade, personally designed elements from our workshop next door.” Wandering round the stunning new showroom, exploring the delightful cameo spaces between these stunning kitchens, the handmade My Fathers Heart kitchen commands front of window position. They are all so gorgeous the only problem is choosing one for your own home.

THE LOCAL COMMUNITY “ We’re proud to have helped keep Totley and its surrounding areas healthy for 20 years. It has been a pleasure to serve such a wonderful community, (perhaps I am biased as I also live in S17) and I have enjoyed meeting and forming close relationships with so many residents. Unfortunately, we have seen many local businesses close or swallowed by large companies over the past 20 years. I hope the personal service we offer has helped us to buck this trend. We have always maintained the absolute highest levels of service, care and efficiency. To ensure this, a few years ago we invested £250,000 in a state-of-the-art dispensing robot which has allowed us to provide a faster and safer service. Did you know that we are one of only a few pharmacies in the country to use one of these? We hope to be around for many more years to continue providing the same level of personal service, and hope you appreciate having an independent pharmacy as part of your community. WS Interiors Standing out from the crowd: David J Martin

Enjoy handmade style in your home with the help of the expert craftsmen at David J Martin.

Built on quality

A

quality, handmade piece of furniture can make all the difference to the feel of your home. Whether you want an entire fitted kitchen, a home study or bespoke bedroom furniture, well made, crafted furniture will last a lifetime and look sensational. David J Martin Joinery Ltd has been designing and manufacturing cabinets and furniture since 1980. Over the years, this friendly, family-run business has grown, expanding to meet the needs of its dedicated customers. In an industry where standard kitchen cabinets come ready-made, it is a welcome surprise to find a large and dedicated onsite workshop at David J Martin’s Walkley location. From here a team of fully qualified, experienced cabinetmakers custom- build every item of furniture, right down to the last detail. These qualified experts also include a professional spray painter and polisher who can deliver an amazing finish, in any colour, on painted furniture. David has over 35 years’ experience in the industry and takes great pride in the quality and service the company has become renowned for, especially keeping control of quality by having on-site workshop facilities.

“The advantage is we can design the kitchen and then make the doors to fit that kitchen,” he explained. “Usually, when the cabinets are mass-produced, the doors, and all other details are already made.” David also offers a bespoke furniture design service, on everything from dressers to kitchen tables. At David J Martin, you are guaranteed a full project management service from start of finish, including all plumbing, electrical, plastering and tiling work. After-sales service is outstanding too. If anything requires extra attention, whether it was fitted two weeks or ten years ago, help is at hand. Come along and see the workforce in action, and samples of the finished product at David J Martin’s workshop and showroom on Springvale Road in Sheffield. From modern and contemporary, with built-in technology, to more traditional country kitchens, bedrooms and offices, the handmade, handcrafted furniture from David J Martin is a design above the rest. For more information or to see what is on offer, give them a call or check the website. David J Martin 210 Springvale Road, Sheffield, S6 3NU Tel: 0114 268 6718 www.david-j-martin.co.uk

Children at Westbourne School learn, play and develop together to achieve their full potential.

Take a fresh look at Westbourne

W

estbourne School has been the first choice for many parents throughout South Yorkshire and Derbyshire for many years... but if you haven’t been watching closely you might be in for a pleasant surprise. With a new school uniform, brand new facilities, a new pre-school department and a fresh commitment to producing well-rounded individuals, Westbourne is moving with the times. Students from all over the region are welcome, and Westbourne’s continuing popularity has seen recent expansion to meet the ever-increasing demand for places. It is the only independent co-ed school in Sheffield that caters for pupils aged three to 16. Offering small class sizes (on average 14 pupils) it strives for a friendly, family environment where first class learning can take place – the key things parents are looking for when they are investing in their child’s education. There is no entrance exam at Westbourne – children of all abilities are welcome and are accepted on their own merit – but exam success rates remain outstanding.

“Westbourne is proud to be inclusive yet still retain a competitive edge.” www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Last year’s Year 11 scholarship form achieved 100 per cent GCSE pass rate with 94 per cent A*- B and there is a highly successful alumni who achieve scholarships to top sixth form schools and many Oxbridge offers. Westbourne hosts a popular annual scholarship examination day where both internal and external Year 6 children sit the exams for the opportunity to receive a scholarship-discounted place in Westbourne’s Year 7 class. This January saw a record number of external applicants eager to experience the Westbourne way of life and learning. Sport plays a big part at Westbourne – the ethos of the sports department is ‘participation for all and enjoyment by all’. Westbourne is proud to be inclusive yet still retains a competitive edge and achieves this by offering not just A team, but B and C team fixtures. Music is also key and children can be seen performing at a whole range of iconic Sheffield venues from the Leadmill to the Sheffield Cathedral. Investment in a new drama studio shows Westbourne’s commitment to the arts and pupils are preparing to present their version of one of the world’s best-loved musicals. Following on from the success of shows like Oliver, Annie and The Wizard of Oz, Grease takes to the stage at Sheffield’s Montgomery Theatre on 9 and 10 March. The Pre-School, now fully integrated into Westbourne school life, has proved so

“Children are accepted on their own merit with individualised learning taking place to meet the specific needs of each child.” popular that it has recently undergone an expansion to meet the high demand for places. Children are taught French, Music, Drama and PE by specialist subject teachers and the phonics and numeracy lessons are personalised to meet each child’s abilities. It’s all part of the fresh approach that makes a Westbourne education the ideal start in life. WS Easter

Chocolate heaven! Our tasters give their guide to the most deliciously indulgent Easter eggs on offer this year.

F

ew things in life bring more joy than tearing into an Easter egg to reveal what tasty treats lie inside. At this time of year, the shelves are brimming with chocolately treats – which presents something of a dilemma when it comes to choosing what to get who. To help out those in such a pickle, our tasting panel put their heads together and put a selection of this year’s eggs to the test. Some may be a bit eggsessive – but they’re a crackin’ bunch. (Geddit?)

OUR Hotel W INNER Chocolat extra-thick rocky road to caramel egg 500g, £27 Beautifully presented in a luxurious hatbox this devilishly thick egg has everything. With one half milk chocolate with cookies, puffed rice and chocolate chunks, and the other caramel-milk chocolate, it is indulgent without being sickly sweet. There is also a fabulous selection of 12 chocolates, which includes delights such as a hot cross bun and a billionaire’s shortbread. Perfect for adults, wonderfully playful and great to share, too.

Best for kids Morrisons large dinosaur Roary 250g, £4

Children love nothing more than novelty chocolate, and when it’s animal-shaped, it seems to taste all the more delicious. While the quality of chocolate won’t blow you away, this cute grinning toothy critter will prove a hit with the kids.

Best for allergies Sainsbury’s Freefrom egg 125g, £3.50

Egg free, gluten free, wheat free, milk free… while the panel applauded this egg for offering those with allergies the chance to be involved in the choctivities, it didn’t quite have the same depth of regular chocolate. On the plus side, at £3.50 for an egg and some chocolate discs, it’s a steal.

Words: Stephanie Burns and Fiona Barber

Best organic option Montezuma’s organic milk chocolate button egg 250g, £9.99

With adorable bunny packaging and a generous portion of buttons, this egg made a great first impression. On the downside, the thickness of the buttons meant they didn’t instantly melt in the mouth, but the chocolate egg was redeeming with a moreish light, creamy texture. If it’s organic and British you’re after, this is your egg.

Best for stylish friends Tesco Finest milk chocolate square egg 300g, £8

The contemporary design was an instant hit with the panel and the contents did not disappoint either. The thickness of this egg made it difficult to break into but – oh boy – it was definitely worth the effort. With a creamy taste similar to Galaxy chocolate, this stylish egg was a real hit and is something any milk chocolate lover would be delighted to receive.

052 - 053 WSide Mar16_Layout 1 15/02/2016 12:12 Page 2

Best ornamental value Bettys medium milk chocolate spring flowers egg 350g, £25

This grown-up Easter treat is clearly a labour of love and the attention to detail is easy to appreciate. With a glossy finish and delicate hand-painted floral decorations, this was almost too pretty to break into. After taking the plunge, our panel discovered strong cocoa flavours ideal for those in search of a high-quality chocolate fix and, while it comes with a heftier price tag than some others, it would make an ideal gift for that someone special.

Best for family fun Cadbury Dairy Milk decorate with icing 100g, £4

With a delicious Dairy Milk egg, icing pen and a small stand to balance your egg on while decorating, this great value-for-money egg is perfect for keeping the kids entertained. Let them doodle on their own egg or even decorate one to give as a gift. Tasty and fun – what more can you ask for?

Best to impress Booja Booja hazelnut crunch truffles large egg 138g, £17.95

With a stunning blue casing, delicate floral designs and a luxurious velvet lining, this is one truly classy egg. The truffles are dairy free, organic and gluten free, but with a silky-smooth chocolate, toasted hazelnuts and an angelic dusting of cocoa powder, which offset the sweetness of the truffle, they are in no way lacking. Perfect to take along as a gift if you are at the in-laws for Easter lunch and the gorgeous velvet egg-shaped casing could be kept for use as a jewellery box.

Best for a super sweet tooth Waitrose caramel and fudge egg 185g, £7

Not for the faint hearted, this indulgent egg was an instant hit for the sugar-lovers on the panel. With milk chocolate making up one half of the egg and a dark caramel chocolate for the other, it is also ideal for those in search of variety. Packed with chewy caramel throughout and sprinkled with chunky fudge pieces, self control is needed to avoid overindulgence.

Best for white chocolate lovers Nestlé Milkybar milk and cookies 162g, £3

Any fan of white chocolate will enjoy the sumptuous creaminess of this and the cookie pieces add a welcome crunchy texture. The shell also wasn’t too thick, making it ideal for any parents looking to limit their children’s chocolate intake over Easter.

Best for dark chocolate lovers Green and Black’s organic dark 70 per cent 165g ,£6.59

For those who find milk or white just a little too sweet this is an ideal alternative. While the panel agreed the chocolate was high quality and featured a nice strong flavour, the accompanying fruity fragrance caused a split of opinions. Some thought it added another dimension, while others found it overpowering. Nevertheless, this is an intense indulgence with the bonus of being organic.

WS Eyecare

Martyn Kemp Opticians has been providing its customers with friendly service and fair prices for more than four decades.

Allan Forster and optical assistant Liz Rhodes

Eyecare you can trust

W

hether you need an eye health check or help choosing stylish new spectacles it is essential to find an optician that provides excellent service and eyecare, as well as offering a wide choice of frames. Independent Martyn Kemp Opticians has been established more than 40 years and has stayed unfailingly loyal to its ethos of offering a friendly individual service and exceptional value for money. Martyn Kemp opened his first branch on Herries Road and since then eight other practices in Sheffield and Rotherham have been established. The Totley practice on Baslow Road and the Abbeydale Road practice have now been serving their local communities for more than 12 and 17 years respectively. These two branches are the responsibility of optometrist Allan Forster, who has been a part of the MKO team for an impressive 27 years. Having begun at the Herries Road practice, Allan worked at several other MKO branches before going into partnership with Martyn in 1998. Emphasising MKO’s family atmosphere, Allan’s

WESTSIDE 56

wife Helen, who is also an optometrist, has worked for the company for more than 22 years and often helps out at the Abbeydale practice. All optical services are available at MKO. These include all NHS and private adults’ and children’s sight tests, dispensing spectacles and sunglasses, contact lenses and solution, and further enhanced optical services. It is also one of only a few optician firms in Sheffield to offer paediatric referral refinement for children. This means that staff from the Children’s Hospital screen youngsters in schools and refer them to a local optician – a great alternative to long waiting lists and several hospital trips. In addition, they offer an optional retinal camera service, where a camera is utilised to complete a more thorough examination of the eye. It takes steady images of the inside and front of the eye and retina, which can be displayed on a screen. These images can be used to compare records over time to assess progress more accurately and to screen for vascular diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. The patients who come to MKO are a great variety of families, elderly people and professionals, and enjoy seeing the same faces each time they come. “It’s a privilege to work with our clients,” Allan says. “A big part of my role involves seeing people routinely and building up trusting relationships. It is hard to compete with the bigger players but we aim to keep prices down and offer an individual service that they can’t.” Optical assistants Liz Rhodes, Julie Cooper, Joy Stoddard and Donna Hattersley have many years’ experience between them

and are the first point of call for patients. They meet and greet visitors and are also on hand to book appointments, help people choose spectacles, deal with fittings and repairs and take care of administration. At MKO, the emphasis is very much on excellent service, this doesn’t mean that they charge more for it. Budget frames, complete with lenses, are available for as little as £39.95. If you’re looking for designer frames, they have a brilliant range. Choose from fabulous brands including Guess, Jaeger, Roberto Cavalli, Silhouette, Gant, Barbour, Ghost, Oasis, Laura Ashley and Jaguar to name but a few. They also offer high-end prescription sunglasses by Revo, which are ideal for all kinds of outdoor activities, as well as Storm teenage wear. Call now to book your appointment. Somewhere, beyond the sea David Lister, Family Law Solicitor at Irwin Mitchell LLP, outlines the difficulties that arise when parents separate and one of them wishes to permanently leave the country, taking their child with them. David Lister

T

he emotional strain of a divorce or separation, particularly when children are involved, can be devastating. When parents choose to split-up, more often than not they will continue to live and work in the same geographical area. However, it is becoming more and more common that one parent wishes, or is required to relocate, often thousands of miles away. Employers can require their workers to transfer to an office in another country, or a parent who once moved to England from another country to be with their partner may wish to return home, to their family and support network, after their relationship has ended. In these situations, what should happen to the children? This year I have already been instructed in three relocation cases, where my clients are either seeking to relocate with their children, or prevent their ex-partners from doing so. I have also been instructed in two cases recently where one parent did not have the permission of the other to relocate. They have been both ordered to return the child to the UK, at great financial cost to them, and had their passports seized by the police. The Court of Appeal recently clarified the principles that must be taken into account when a judge is tasked with deciding whether or not the parent wishing to relocate should be given permission to remove a child, or forced to remain in this country.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Ultimately the child’s welfare is paramount. That is the only principle in relocation cases. A holistic, evaluative approach must be taken, looking at each parent’s proposals side by side, balancing the pros and cons in terms of the child’s welfare and listening to what the child has to say. In 2015 the Ministry of Justice commissioned the Voice of the Child report, which focuses on the importance of children playing a central role in proceedings that will fundamentally define their future. I am often asked ‘how old does my child have to be before she can decide for herself?’ The answer is it varies, depending upon the level of maturity shown by the child. Even in cases where children appear old enough to make their own decisions, their wishes and feelings are not always determinative. The relocation of a child to a foreign country where there is the possibility of a fundamental interference with the relationship between one parent and a child requires that the parents' plans be scrutinised and evaluated by reference to proportionality, in view of the engagement of their right to a family life and consideration must be given to any erosion in the quality of the relationship between the child and the parent who is being left behind. I have seen cases where a parent has struggled to effectively co-parent a child with their former partner when living just a few miles apart, leaving judges wholly unconvinced that they would be capable of promoting and maintaining a relationship

between the child and the parent who is left behind where the distance between them would be much greater. As a result, their applications to remove the child have been refused, leaving them trapped, with no friends or family for support. Judges are keen to highlight that triumph in relocation cases ordinarily requires the moving parent to understand the importance of facilitating the child’s relationship with the parent who is left behind, whether through weekly Skype or Facetime calls or extended holidays outside of term time. The best case scenario is that parents will be able to agree what is best for their child, either directly, through mediation or negotiation using solicitors. The court is not a third parent and it is always better to reach an agreement away from the court, than place their child’s future in the hands of a complete stranger. Any agreement can always be endorsed by the court, for the sake of certainty. Relocation cases require expert legal guidance, a strategic approach and an understanding of the emotional and psychological impact that the move will have upon every member of the family not only in the short term but for generations ahead.

The Killer Heels

Self-confessed shoeaholic and local artist Sarah Darling never compromises when it comes to a fabulous pair of heels always opting for Kurt Geigers. And though she’s built up quite an impressive collection, there’s one pair she couldn’t be without. When Sarah found a pair of towering glittering heels in the Kurt Geiger store at Meadowhall five years ago, she knew she had to have them. “They were an expensive and unnecessary purchase, but necessary to feed my frivolous soul,” she laughs. “I wear them on most nights out to town. They jazz up a plain dress and I’ve worn them to weddings. They make me feel special – and sometimes when I’m feeling blue, I’ll even wear them around the house.” And though comfort isn’t her biggest concern when it comes to a stylish pair of shoes, Sarah admits this is certainly a bonus: “Although they look high, they’re quite comfortable. However, they don’t always agree with the cobbles of Sheffield!”

My favourite fashion item Six Westsiders pick the clothes that they just could not live without.

I

t’s every well-dressed man or woman’s worst nightmare. Every cherished garment and accessory you possess is about to perish in an all-consuming fire and you can only save one. What would you pluck from the flames? A much-loved classic or the latest buy? Here is what a cross-section of Westsiders said.

The Shirt

Choosing just one amongst his many shirts was a difficult task for Brag Vintage co-owner Gareth, but his current favourite has to be the red and blue shirt he found in his very own store two months ago. “This shirt is one of my favourites because of its bold, classic colour,” he says. Over the last few years, checked flannel shirts have become Gareth’s most-loved fashion item, and since his first store opened in the city centre in August 2014, their customers have shared his passion, with the vintage shirt section quickly becoming a major and permanent section of the store. "I think the checked shirts are popular because they are a versatile, unisex item,” says Gareth. “With so many styles and colours available there's one to suit everyone. Our shirts are bought wholesale and then the best shirts are hand selected for our various retail outlets – online and in both stores."

The Little Black Dress As a professional singer, performer and one third of 1940s-inspired singing group, The Bobby Pins, Ecclesall resident Gina Walters is always on the look out for classic outfits to wear for her performances. Gina has found that the simplest dresses are the easiest to accessorise to her unique style. She had seen this particular black dress at Collectif Clothing, an online vintage store, months ago, but it wasn’t until it was reduced in this year’s January sale that she was able to click the order button. “I’d had my eye on it for ages, but I couldn’t afford it, so when it went in the sale, I snapped it up!” says Gina. “I know very few women who don't have a trusty LBD - or three! But this one in particular speaks to my inner pinup, with super stretchy fabric that clings in all the right places. “It's perfect for a night out with the girls or for when I'm doing cabaret shows, I love dressing it up with retro hair and red lips.”

The Coat

A holiday in Turkey to celebrate a significant milestone birthday a few years back brought the bonus of a versatile and stylish coat that has become a firm favourite in the wardrobe of Whirlow resident Kathleen Cox. Kathleen spotted the particularly fine-looking lightweight coat in cream leather with a Burberry-style checked lining while strolling through a market in Istanbul with husband Mike. “When they did not have my size, the man running the shop rushed off and managed to get another one from somewhere that fitted perfectly. I was

The Cruise Shoes

If you are lucky enough to find a smart pair of shoes that provides both style and substance, they are worth holding onto. Shoe shop owner Stephen Brooks certainly thinks so. He hand picked a pair of Loake designer shoes from his Fulwood Road store 21 years ago and still wears them to this day. “They are very comfortable and stylish, so I always wear them on cruise holidays,” says Stephen. “They are good for any occasion and my wife really likes them too. It’s a shoe that never dates!” Furthermore, these miracle shoes are of such a high quality that Stephen has never had to re-heel them. It’s no surprising then, that Stephen has been stocking the shoe brand ever since his shop first opened in 1972. If you are looking for your own pair of Loakes, there are plenty of colours and styles to choose from at Charles Brooks. What’s more, there are plenty of shoe care products and polishes, as well as an in-store re-heeling and repair service to ensure your favourite shoes stand the test of time too.

very impressed,” Kathleen recalls. That was the easy part: they then had to decide on a price, haggling being very much part of the local culture. “I can’t remember whether it was Euros or pounds, but he did not take credit cards and he was definitely not interested in liras. I managed to get the price down from 450 to 200, after which he said he could not go any lower. “So it was not a steal, but it is such a beautiful coat and over the last few years I have got a lot of pleasure from wearing it, so I definitely think it was good value. It’s lightweight, showerproof and does not crease so it’s ideal to squeeze into a suitcase whenever I am travelling.”

Whilst some of us hunt high and low for the perfect piece of clothing, Mamnick founder, owner, designer and “coffee boy”, Thom Barnett created his very own Mamnick Edale smock, made from cranberry check cashmere, with 1950s French-ticking inner. As well as being a stylish outdoor garment to be proud of, Thom explains it has sentimental value too: “It was manufactured for me as a Mamnick piece at a factory in my home town of Rotherham in 2014. It was the first piece of outwear I ever did, so it was a bit of a milestone for me.” So what is it about the design that makes this his favourite? “Just how functional it is, how warm the cashmere keeps you, and, I think, how good it looks.” Mamnick is the road that leaves Hope Valley and ascends of Mam Tor, in the Peak District – one of the most picturesque locations in Britain and the inspiration behind the brand. Being right on the Peak District’s door-step, it is fitting that the business manufactures warm and comfortable clothes to withstand our unpredictable weather.

WS In Brief

Five-a-side victory for Westbourne’s Year 7 and 8 girls

The Westbourne School Year 7 and 8 girls’ five-a-side football team kicked off their first match of the season with a 6-1 victory over Sheffield High School. In a highly competitive fixture, which saw Westbourne 4-0 up by half time, captain Hannah Richards and Isabel Hardcastle each scored two goals with Chloe Bennett and Abigail Crapper also getting on the score-sheet. “This was an excellent team performance from Westbourne and to have such a strong girls football team from a comparatively small pool only goes to highlight the sporting talent that we have here at Westbourne,” said coach Tom Hancock. “The next game of the season has been arranged and the girls have already set themselves a new target to keep improving their communication on the pitch.”

Ashdell girls have talent

Ashdell School has proved for the second year in a row that its students really do have talent as two Y6 girls have been awarded scholarships to their senior schools. Molly McEwen has been awarded a performing arts scholarship and Grace Conroy was awarded a sports scholarship. “We are absolutely delighted and very proud of our girls,” said head teacher Anne Camm. “They all work exceptionally hard in their final year here and the results of that hard work have most definitely paid off. This is the first time such scholarships have been awarded, so we are thrilled that our varied and busy school curriculum has helped the girls achieve these honours.”

Sheffield High School bounce their way to the National Schools’ trampolining finals

Sheffield High School U19 novice, intermediate and U14 intermediate trampolining teams have qualified for the National Schools’ finals, this month. The teams travelled to Gateshead for the North Zone competition, after a successful performance at the Yorkshire Regional Rounds. The U19 teams were defending their position as national champions, which they have held for the past seven years.Year 12 student Pippa Kelly performed incredibly under pressure, helping to secure the team’s place in the finals after finishing second overall. Year 7 trampolinist Lydia Campbell was the youngest competitor for Sheffield High School and contributed to the U14 team victory. Teresa Willis in Year 10 achieved fourth place individually in the U19 age group. Three teams will travel to Wigan on 19 March to compete in the National Finals, representing the school and the North, and will compete against the top two teams from the south, east and west of Great Britain

Sheffield High School pupil shortlisted in Everywoman Technology awards

Sheffield High School pupil Nayana Dasgupta is among four finalists to be shortlisted in the ‘One to Watch Category’ in the sixth annual FDM Everywoman in Technology awards in association with techUK. Words: Phoebe Seymour Photography: Visit Košice

Set your sights The Slovakian city of Košice is now just a short hop from DoncasterSheffield Airport and offers plenty for the city break crowd.

D

rinking is our national sport,” says my tour guide Slavo, half joking, as he drives me through the historical hot spots of Košice in a Škoda. I’m on an authentic Košice post-socialist tour, meaning I am getting a chance to see the real eastern Slovakia, from the colourful street art towering high above us on a block of flats, to an outdoor bar popular with students in the summertime. Having already visited one of many microbreweries, the wine region of Tokaj and been urged to try a flaming shot in restaurants, Slavo had a point. Hostinec is a craft beer brewery and bar based in the quaint, 13th century heart of the city. The bar is sophisticated but laid back, with wooden benches filling every nook and pintsized steins. I was invited to take my stein on a tour of the cellar to sample the variety of ales and learn more about how they were brewed. If wine is more your tipple, Tokaj is only an hour’s drive away, south of Košice. Tokaj Macik Winery is a family run vineyard and winery that hosts wine tasting sessions in their candlelit cellars. As I sat amongst their many barrels, the owner explained that these cellars are 11 degrees (the perfect temperature for wine) all year round, which is why many buyers leave their bottles here to age gracefully and increase in value. Louis XV of France described Tokaj as, “the wine of kings” and after tasting seven

delicious wines, ranging from dry to sweet, it is difficult to disagree with him. My guides and I were then treated to a Slovakian speciality; duck, sweet red cabbage and lokša (potato-stuffed pancakes), which turned out to be the most delicious meal of the trip. Back in Košice, you’ll find plenty more opportunities to try Slovakia’s national dish; bryndzové halušky (dumplings stuffed with sheep’s cheese, served in a creamy sauce).Villa Regia is a country kitchen-style restaurant that serves halušky and many more traditional dishes, but if you want to fully immerse

yourself in Slovakian culture, kolibas (cottages) are a must. Whilst on an excursion to the High Tatra Mountains (Vysoke Tatry), I visited the Zbojnícka Koliba in the village of Stara Lesna. This is an old-fashioned restaurant, with meat roasting on a fire and a gypsy band in traditional outfits. Playing Slovak folk songs, it wasn’t long before the band started taking requests and everyone was singing along. Well, everyone who knows the lyrics to Slovakian folk songs that is. I settled for appreciative toe tapping. Here, I had sheep’s cheese on bread, An excursion to Krasnohorska jaskyna caves

followed by duck, chicken and pork fresh off the spit with sweet red cabbage and then sweet pirohy covered in poppy seeds (small dumplings which can be served savoury or sweet) for dessert. Meanwhile, the High Tatra Mountains, North West of Košice, are a wonderful holiday destination for nature and winter sports lovers, with plenty of walking trails, ski slopes and stunning views. You can even go bear watching if you dare. Even if you’re not sporty, it’s still well worth getting close to the mountains. Whilst at a ski resort, I took two cable cars half way up the mountain (you can also hike). Gazing up at the highest peak, with one of the world’s highest observatories perched on top, and the turquoise lake below, it was the most stunning sight I’d ever seen. When it comes to city breaks, Košice is often overlooked, but as the second largest city after Bratislava with a wealth of history, there’s plenty to do. And though you can trace the old walls of the city and visit one of the oldest and most expensive coins in the world at the East Slovakia Muzeum (the Treasure of Košice), there’s also a strong arts scene placing it firmly in the present. Košice was named the European City of Culture 2013 and it’s easy to see why. The Kunsthalle is an old swimming pool, turned art gallery, which exhibits modern and politically charged art, whilst Kulturpark, is an old army barracks, turned ultra modern centre for all kinds of events including

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Fashion Week. Fittingly, each building is still labelled with their barrack names Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and so on. I also had a chance to visit the vibrant Tabačka kulturfabrik. In true Košice style, this was another industrial hub turned art space and was once a tobacco factory. With its quirky courtyard mural, events space and trendy bistro and bar, Tabačka kulturfabrik has a younger, more alternative vibe. Upstairs you’ll find offices of freelance artists and groups such as Street Art Communication (SAC) who are responsible for the gorgeous murals all over the city. Sheffield’s Phlegm has even done a residency with them. There is so much more to discover in the national parks surrounding Košice including the village of Háj, famed for its waterfalls and the 11th century Spiš Castle, North West of Košice in the neighbouring Spiš region. I spent my final day exploring the Krasnohorska jaskyňa caves in the national parks to the south and driving along the lonely, winding roads, in awe of the misty mountains and trees as far as the eye could see. As we drove back through the busy streets of Košice, I realised just how relaxing reconnecting with nature had been. With its many historical side streets and a thriving arts scene, Košice has everything you need for a picturesque city break, whilst being in easy reach of the tranquil national parks and the action-packed winter sports of the High Tatra Mountains.

Stephanie at Stockghyll Force waterfall near Ambleside

Lakeland lifestyle

From gruelling hikes and outdoor pursuits to relaxing cruises and quaint villages, the Lake District has it all. Just make sure you’re prepared for all weathers. By Stephanie Burns.

T

he step-by-step map stuck to my sweaty palm said it would take 40 minutes to reach the summit of Wansfell Pike, and I’d be damned if I was going to miss that target. As my agile partner hot-footed it up the mountain like a graceful mountain goat, I quietly cursed my short legs and struggled to keep up. Thank god we hadn’t attempted Wansfell’s scarier neighbour, Scafell Pike. The only thing that kept me going was knowing that, once we eventually reached the top, the 360-degree view would be worth every gruelling step. ‘You have a clear view over Windermere,’ the map said, ‘coming round to the west you can see: the Coniston fells, Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, the Langdale hills and then the Fairfield Horseshoe. Closer to you is Red Screes.’ It even told us to look out for the Yorkshire Dales and Morecambe Bay. I couldn’t wait to play spot the landmark while munching on my well-deserved Kendal mint cake.

WESTSIDE 76

Of course, I should have taken into account the reality of our location. On reaching the top, we were met not with farreaching views of the North West’s beauty spots but rather a sky full of dark grey clouds and bitingly cold gusts of wind that threatened to send us tumbling right back down the gravelly path from whence we came. Ah, Great British weather, you cruel thing. We had begun our journey on that cloudy Saturday in higher spirits, with a 20minute trip on an open-decked Windermere Lake Cruise (£3.95pp one-way, www.windermere-lakecruises.co.uk) from Brockhole to Waterhead Jetty. From there, we’d set off through Ambleside – it’s worth taking a minor detour to check out the hidden 70ft waterfall of Stockghyll Force along the way – before scaling Wansfell and then descending down Nanny Lane into Troutbeck, a quaint little village with a couple of good pubs, a nice picnic spot outside the

Post Office, and some great examples of traditional Lake District architecture. After winding our way down several green lanes and bridleways, we arrived back at Brockhole (www.brockhole.co.uk) four hours after setting off for a much-needed drink and an obligatory mooch around the gift shop. There was much more to do and explore – an adventure playground, treetop treks, mini golf, pony rides, bike hire, boat hire and exhibitions – but there was something even more appealing waiting back at our hotel. We were staying on the outskirts of Kendal in a balcony room overlooking Kendal Castle and the Lakeland Fells at the BEST WESTERN PLUS Castle Green Hotel (www.castlegreen.co.uk). Having planned to exert ourselves during the day, we had booked an early evening treatment at the onsite Green Rooms Spa. My full body Hot Lava Shell massage (£55 for 60 minutes) and my partner’s back, neck and shoulder aromatherapy massage (£32 for 25 minutes) were sheer luxury after the blustery walk. As the rain lashed down, I was even more grateful that we’d booked a table at the hotel’s Greenhouse restaurant that evening, too. The two-AA restaurant has recently undergone a £250,000 refurbishment and ranks 17 of 136 places to eat in Kendal on Trip Advisor. In the open theatre-style kitchen, executive head chef Justin Woods and his team cook up an impressive menu of predominantly locally-sourced fare. Dishes such as twice-baked blue cheese soufflé, sous vide beef loin and white chocolate panna cotta from the three-course set menu (£28) went down incredibly well. James and Catherine Alexander bought the property in 1995, opening it as a hotel two years later, but its rich history long predates this. The original house, which now

makes up the business and training centre and executive bedrooms, was built by local ironmonger Thompson Bindloss in 1847, whose nephew donated it to the Borough of Kendal in his will. For the 50 years preceding the Alexanders’ ownership, the house was used as offices by the Electricity Board. We’d strayed further afield for our meal the evening before, to The Wheatsheaf Inn at Brigsteer (www.thewheatsheafbrigsteer.co.uk), winner of Food & Drink Pub of the Year at the 2015 Cumbria Life Food & Drink Awards. We rang at 8pm on the Friday night and they happily squeezed us in with just half an hour to spare. After a rather hairy drive down a

one-track road three miles outside of Kendal we came across the pub, another historical building, which has parts that date back to 1762. It’s been an alehouse since the early 19th century and, with its slate floors (the first of many we were to see), fresh-cut flowers, flickering candles, pale green walls, mismatched wooden furniture and old wooden windows, they have the rustic country pub feel down to a tee. We finished the trip in another quaint Lakes village, Hawkshead, and another pub, the Queen’s Head. I’d read that it was the prettiest village in the Lake District and it didn’t disappoint. Chocolate-box cottages, winding backstreets, a Beatrix Potter gallery and plenty of cafes and pubs to mop up the tourist crowds made for a very pleasant spot to while away a couple of hours. That morning, we’d stopped in Kendal to stock up on mint cake and poke around the plethora of little lanes that make the old town a great place to explore. Among the independent shops, there are plenty of high street stores (Fat Face, White Stuff, Joules and Mountain Warehouse, to name a few) so if you forget your walking gear, you’re well covered. It’s certainly something to bear in mind if you’re planning a lack-of-equipment type excuse for not tackling one of the region’s many Pikes. With my partner already talking of a Scafell hike at some point in the near future – that’s more than double the height of Wansfell at 3,309ft – I guess I’d better pull on my walking shoes again and get training. Well, if it means having an excuse to book in for another post-hike Hot Lava Shell massage, who am I to argue?

WS Eating Out

Simply the best Stephanie Burns is seriously impressed by the standard of the food at the Samuel Fox Inn.

O

n more than one occasion during my visit to The Samuel Fox Country Inn in Bradwell, I uttered the words: ‘This is one of the best meals I’ve ever had’. To say that chef proprietor James Duckett’s food is a perfectly balanced, well-executed feast of deliciousness would be a serious understatement. Anyway, that’s enough gushing. For now. In the cosy and stylish surroundings of this welcoming Derbyshire bolthole, my partner and I had taken a window seat in the restaurant and settled in with a wonderfully sharp glass of Chilean Sauvignon and a pint of Crafty Fox – a handcrafted lager made especially for the Samuel Fox by a brewery in Chesterfield. There are several dining options available, but it was the a la carte menu that caught our eye. A 5-10-5 menu is available 67pm and, for those going all out, there’s a seven-course tasting menu at £49. A couple on the table next to us chose this and I (not so subtly) eyed up every mouthwatering dish that came their way. While waiting for our starters to arrive, we cooed over the complimentary bread selection – a hazelnut pesto, a yoghurt and coriander, and a rustic white variety – which we spread with lashings of salty butter. An excellent start with the promise of even greater things to come. When my tortello starter arrived, it looked pretty as a picture – and tasted even better. The super-smooth stilton and cider filling packed an incredibly powerful punch and was cut through with the subtle sweetness of the roasted butternut squash. An occasional crunch from the scattered hazelnuts added another

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

welcome treat. My partner had to tell me to shut up after politely enduring my over-zealous reaction to each new mouthful for longer than could have been expected. But it’s such a wellaccomplished dish, I implore you to try it if you ever see it on James’ ever-changing seasonal menu. The creamy cauliflower soup being devoured (albeit more quietly) by my partner was given an extra kick with a topping of chorizo and shepherd’s bread, a variety made the old-fashioned way in stone ovens. He practically licked the bowl clean to make sure not a single morsel escaped him. On to mains, and my juicy duck breast and confit duck leg with an assortment of accompaniments was another fine example of James’s talents. The rich port wine sauce brought together the whole dish beautifully. Meanwhile, my partner marvelled at his perfectly cooked sea bream, complete with crispy skin, but it was the crab sauce that had him in raptures. It was my turn to tell him to pipe down. As we polished off two superb puds – the lightest sticky toffee pudding I’d ever had and a gorgeous rhubarb and almond trifle – I became particularly envious of our fellow diners who had no more arduous a task than a short journey upstairs to one of the Samuel Fox’s four luxurious bedrooms. Oh, to have enjoyed breakfast of this calibre the next morning.

I

f you were making a film and you were scouting locations for scenes set in a country pub, you’d probably pick somewhere like the Plough Inn. Subdued lighting, twinkling brassware, wooden beams, pints of foaming ale – the Plough, with its warm and friendly atmosphere, is straight from country inn central casting. Its timeless appeal made it a welcome refuge after a drive over the moors on a truly filthy winter’s night and from the first scent of the woodsmoke whipped across the car park by a howling gale, the Plough was everything you’d expect from a rural pub. So much for the props, but the we were here for the main feature – the food and drink. Bradfield Brewery’s local brews star at the bar, along with Black Sheep and Old Speckled Hen and there’s an extensive wine list. You could really push the boat out with the fine wine selection topping out price-wise at an eyewatering £225 a bottle, but we found plenty to choose from at the more modest end of the spectrum, settling for a fine fruity shiraz and a glass of delicate viognier to get things started. Food-wise, the Plough offers an extensive selection of classic bar meals – grills, steak and kidney pudding, fish and chips, traditional Italian pizzas – but we chose from the more elaborate and intriguing restaurant menu. Proceedings kicked off in fine style with a complimentary appetiser of langoustine veloute served in a cup. Rich and creamy it

had an intense seafood flavour. Next up were starters of pork terrine, whose robust, rustic flavours were well setoff by a delicate, mustardy, mayonnaise-y sauce, and juicy scallops served on a bed of light, flaky pastry and crispy radicchio and with a delicate liquorice sauce adding an unusual twist. There were more contrasting flavour combinations on show when it came to the main courses. Moist, succulent red mullet came perfectly cooked, its skin delicately crispy, and accompanied by little bombs of intense aubergine flavour with herby notes of rosemary. Meanwhile, my poached beef, medium-rare and oozing delicious meaty juices was melt-in-themouth tender. It came with a lovely rosti potato - just the right of crunch on the outside and soft and silky inside – and an intriguing mixture of horseradish and ginger. The pudding menu featured lots of fruity goodness. My cranberry and clementine crumble was a lovely gooey mouthful complemented by a generous dollop of silky ice cream, Across the table, a tangy orange marmalade and Greek yoghurt was the perfect accompaniment to a refreshing honey and walnut cheesecake The service was attentive and friendly and featured young Jacob Emery, 14, the third generation of his family to be involved in running the Plough and learning the trade under the watchful eye of his dad, Elliott. On this evidence, the future’s in good hands.

WS Eating Out

Something special Chris Wilson discovers that the Tickled Trout is much more than just a local pub.

G

iven that owner Chris Mapp’s culinary training included a number of years doing 18-hour shifts in the kitchens of highend restaurants run by Michelin-starred big hitters like Gordon Ramsey and Marcus Wareing, perhaps the biggest surprise about the menu at the Tickled Trout is how homely, comforting and straightforward it is. With steaks, burgers, pies, pizzas and good old spag bol on offer, at first glance this could be any old teatime in a local pub that has decided to diversify by putting a bit of food on. It could be... but it isn’t. The food at this increasingly popular dining pub in Barlow may not be flash, but with a shaving of truffle here and a fancy tropical fruit salsa there, it is far from routine. And boy, is it special. Closer inspection of what is on offer reveals a strong Italian theme with pizza and pasta dishes in abundance, along with a dedication to using local farms and producers, while the chalk board always includes fish caught the same day and delivered sparkling fresh from Cornwall. The venue itself, an ordinary local pub until Chris bought and transformed it a couple of years ago, is looking absolutely pristine after a New Year deep clean, and it remains a proper village local at heart. Beer is another of Chris’s passions and he always has three hand-pulled ales from an ever-changing roster of local independent breweries on tap.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

But how many local pubs would also have their own small estate wine maker supplying limited edition DOCG Prosecco? Like I said, nothing fancy at first glance, but what goes on here is delightfully different. Our meal began with a taster portion of a Tickled Trout speciality, tomato soup made by placing a large tray of tomatoes on the bottom of the oven to catch the beef dripping juices from the Sunday roast. This was comfort food with a touch of class, a theme to be repeated throughout the evening. Next up were the starters proper, a meaty ham hock scotched quail’s egg (yolk still slightly runny, of course) with spiced pineapple and kumquat salsa, and arancini, crisp risotto squares served with chopped truffle mayonnaise. With both dishes coated in the crispiest, crunchiest crumbs, this was deep-frying as a work of art. My main course, the Tickled Trout’s signature dish, was a tender fillet of Cornish sea trout with almonds, pancetta lardons and herbed gnocchi. Everything belonged and was cooked to perfection. Meanwhile, across the table, my companion was only slightly overfaced by a free range Derbyshire spatchcock chicken, marinated in lemon and thyme, finished on the char grill and served with a mango, crispy bacon and almond salad. It was gorgeously moist, and the leftovers made for a superior

sandwich the following day. Fries, sprinkled with parmesan and chopped black truffle, added a touch of decadence. Our pudding was a shared tarte tatin, served with clotted cream and vanilla ice cream. The recipe, Chris cheerfully admits, was liberated from his time working with Masterchef guru Wareing. “Write this down,” my companion insisted. “Gorgeous, unctuous, sweet, chewy.” So I did. I’ll add one word of my own... perfect.

I

t isn’t often you walk into a restaurant to find a wine named after the owner, but at West 10 on Fulwood Road, the Jonnie Red is often the most popular drink of the day. Perhaps ‘named after’ is misleading – the Jonnie Red is whichever wine owner Jonnie Higgingbottom has chosen as the wine of the day. But Jonnie knows his wine and it’s a sure sign of good taste and trust that many order a drink based solely on his recommendation. One Friday evening we met Jonnie and his wife Alison in the downstairs bar. There wasn’t an empty seat in the house and Jonnie admitted weekends have become so popular they are often booked up for four weeks in advance and – with an innovative menu, extensive wine list and attentive staff – it’s easy to see why. In the upstairs restaurant – a classy but cosy space with wine-themed decor and dark wooden tables – we explored the selective a la carte menu and impressive range of specials. For starters my partner couldn’t resist the belly pork special. The succulent meat arrived with moist black pudding, faggots and beetroot, all topped with a twig of supreme crackling and proved to be a real carnivorous treat. Meanwhile, I was tucking into the delicate beef carpaccio. Served on a grey slate with truffle oil, gherkins, fried capers and gremolata, and topped with parsnip crisps and sweet edible flowers, it was truly stunning in both presentation and taste.

On to mains, and there was no question I would be having fish, but which to choose? Fresh fish has become something of a specialty at West 10 and all it comes straight from one fisherman in Dorset. Alongside the whole-fish option, there are fillets to choose from and diners also get to pick their preferred accompaniments. I opted for the sea bass with olives, tomatoes and basil oil and enjoyed a well-seasoned, crisp-skinned fillet complemented by an array of exciting flavours. On the recommendation of our lovely waitress, Hayley, I ordered a glass of Babich sauvignon blanc. Clean and fresh with a buttery palate and just enough citrus to cut through the sea bass, it was the perfect match. Meanwhile, my companion was tucking into an impressive surf and turf; a juicy 8oz sirloin, cooked perfectly medium-rare, with succulent garlic tiger prawns, scallops and crunchy chips – an ideal Friday night dinner. We had just finished dessert – a sweet sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch ice cream and an impressive West 10 cheeseboard – when Jonnie arrived with baby Guinness shots and the two young chefs making their mark at West 10. With head chef Kamil Bajorek’s creativity and sous-chef Ashley Bagshaw’s meticulous attention to detail, the pair form a dynamic duo. “I’m incredibly proud of my kitchen with these two boys doing what they are doing; they are brilliant,” Jonnie enthused. “I couldn’t be prouder of all my staff; they really make West 10 what is has become.”

Meet the chef Job satisfaction is high on the agenda for these local chefs. Stephanie Burns finds out the secret to their success.

Leslie Buddington Brocco on the Park

Indulgence, to me, is using the best quality and freshest ingredients so that you can taste the individual elements of the dish. I think a clean cooking process can make the healthiest of foods feel indulgent. Good food should appeal to all of the senses, so bringing flavours together to create a good-looking plate is most important. The food should taste sublime, smell delicious and be aesthetically pleasing. Lots of different things inspire me: the seasons, eating out in different restaurants and trying combinations of different flavours are just some of the ways I find inspiration for new dishes. 92 Brocco Bank, Sheffield, S11 8RS. Chris Mapp Tickled Trout

I have always loved cooking and used to watch cooking programs and then write down the recipes from Ceefax. I spent 13 years in London, working for Marcus Wareing at Pétrus and Bjorn van der Hörst at The Greenhouse. I then opened No6. in Padstow in 2005 with my friend Paul Ainsworth before setting up the Tickled Trout last summer. We have amazing products and suppliers in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire so it is great fun developing the specials. They enable our flair to shine through, being able to create dishes that are unlikely to be attempted by our guests at home. 33 Valley Road, Barlow, S18 7SL. Dionysios Mouzakis The Greedy Greek Deli

I learnt about high quality food from my mum and, from the age of 20, I had my own restaurants in Greece. This was the best way to have my own business because of the tourism there. I then moved to the UK in 2001 and set up the deli almost 14 years ago. The chef side is only a small part of my role, but it means I can ensure the food is how I want it to be. I love my job and enjoy the variety, plus it’s great to have the opportunity to develop new projects and promote Greek food in the UK. 418-420 Sharrow Vale Road, Sheffield, S11 8ZP Tel: 0114 266 7719 www.thegreedygreekdeli.co.uk

Jeffrey Wright The BBQ Collective at The Hop

I started working in kitchens in my hometown of Minneapolis at the age of 14, developing my culinary skills and my love for barbecue over the next ten years in the hospitality industry. I took a ‘little’ detour (25 years) into the investment banking and consulting world but my passion for perfecting my own barbecue never waned. I switched career to pursue my dreams. As executive chef/pitmaster I specialise in straight up American barbecue. I enjoy working in an open kitchen as it allows me to have daily interaction with customers who are equally enthusiastic about barbecue. I’ve been at the Cross Scythes for 12 months, serving good honest pub food with a little twist. Our chocolate fondant with mango sorbet, banoffee sauce and raspberry flavours is one of the best around; it’s big and rich with an amazing silky soft warm centre. I love the pub because it’s ideally placed on the edge of the city, it has picturesque views, a fantastic range of real ales, and the food – from breads to pastries – is all made on site. Our new YouTube channel is full of recipes, hints and tips, cocktail-making and truffle making. We also have some other interesting projects coming in early 2016. WS Meet the Chef

Roland Rasztik La Terrazza

I started to work as a kitchen assistant then completed my NVQ level 2 as a professional chef and, after training in food safety, became head chef at La Terrazza. I am currently studying health and nutrition level 3. I love food, culinary arts and food design. For me it is really important to have well-balanced, nutritious food and the best place for this is an authentic Italian restaurant. I enjoy creating exciting new dishes and I’m really interested in 3D food printing so I will be looking for opportunities in the future to integrate this technology.

Jonty Cork Made by Jonty

I worked at Silversmiths and West 10 before I opened Made by Jonty. I decided that I would like to own a café rather than a restaurant because I have always had a flair for making things and baking. We serve breakfast, brunch, light lunches and cakes. By serving quality food in a café, you can always deliver a standard of service far above people’s expectations. Being creative, constantly improving, meeting customers; I enjoy the whole experience of being a chef. My signature dish is eggs benedict. 363 Sharrow Vale Road, Sheffield, S11 8ZG Tel: 0114 266 6447 www.madebyjonty.co.uk

Michele Magnotta Proove

My passion and experience has been passed down to me from my Italian family and I am the third generation of bakers and pizza makers. I have always enjoyed this craft and have always wanted to continue our family tradition. Making pizza is an art and I enjoy the detail and how everything must be so precise. I also love to experiment with flavours. My great interest is to educate people in how to prepare and eat good food. At Proove, we’re already doing it through our pizza school. It’s obviously in my interest to spread the pizza-making tradition. Everyone should be able to make great pizza! 261 Fulwood Road, Broomhill, S10 3BD. Tel: 0114 294 5185. www.proove.co.uk

Christian Kent East Lodge and Callow Hall

I was inspired to cook by my grandmother. I trained for three years at Granville College with Kevin Woodford before embarking on my culinary journey in London for 15 years, including stints at Claridges and The Savoy. I then returned to Sheffield where I ran The Blue Room Brasserie followed by Christian at The Beauchief. I love the creativity of being a chef; the environment of being in and around a kitchen and restaurant means that you are always learning and no two days are ever the same. Cooking has never felt like work to me. I have an unwavering passion for delivering great food and memorable experiences. East Lodge Hotel and Restaurant, Matlock Road, Rowsley, DE4 2EF Tel: 01629 734474. www.eastlodge.com Callow Hall Hotel and Restaurant, Mappleton Road, Ashbourne, DE6 2AA Tel: 01335 300900. www.callowhall.co.uk

Mark Vernon The Maynard

I was taken out for a meal for my 16th birthday and was so invigorated by the food that it encouraged me into the kitchen. I have now been cheffing for 28 years. I have a love for growing my own vegetables at home and hope to inspire my children to do the same. There is nothing better than paddock to plate, especially in the home environment. I like developing dishes and bringing them up to date. As I was classically trained, it is nice to see old-fashioned dishes and ingredients used in a modern way. Main Road, Grindleford, S32 2HE. Fabian is on the right

Fabian Cruz Cubana

I try to use all the flavours in the food that I experienced growing up in the South American countryside. I was very lucky to have met a Chilean lady called Norma, who taught me some of the most popular dishes in South America, such as empanadas and South American-style meatballs, which Cubana is famous for. At the moment I’m trying to get back to my roots by growing my own vegetables. I also keep my own chickens for free range eggs and would love to get a couple of pigs and start my own farm. Mahmut Tezel Lokanta

I grew up with good home cooking. My mum makes everything from scratch, even her own Turkish-style yoghurt, which is perfect with her stuffed vine leaves, and she bakes all our family’s bread. Before Lokanta I worked in a hotel on the Turkish Mediterranean coast. Prior to that, I worked for Lokanta owners Ruth and Faruk Günay at their old place in Kemer near Antalya. I am very proud to be part of the team at Lokanta. It is a long way from the Mediterranean tourist resort where I first took the job with Faruk but Turks believe in fate and here I am! 478-480 Glossop Road, Broomhill, S10 2QA. Tel: 0114 266 6444. www.lokanta.co.uk

Jamie Oliver The Crown Inn

I have always been passionate about food and went to college straight from school to do my City & Guilds qualification. I really enjoy cooking and being creative. My signature dish is baked cod on herbed centred crushed potatoes and I have been serving homemade pub grub like this at The Crown Inn for the past two years. My advice to aspiring chefs is to know the job before you make the decision. We work unsociable hours, including weekends and long days, but it pays off when you have the same people coming week on week to sample your food. Hillfoot Road,Totley, S17 3AX. Tel: 0114 236 0789. www.crowninnsheffield.co.uk

Kia Kia’s Pastaria

As soon as I entered a professional kitchen, I knew it was made for me. I began my career 15 years ago as a pot washer but I had such a passion for food that the owner made me a starter chef. After working in various restaurants, including Antibo in Sheffield, I have now realised my dream of opening my own restaurant, which specialises in pasta. There is so much excitement in this job, especially seeing people enjoying your food. It’s great to be able to show off your talent and express yourself through your dishes. 759-761 Abbeydale Road, Sheffield, S7 2BG Tel: 0114 250 1111

Darren Goodwin Losehill House

Charlie Curran Peppercorn Restaurant

My partner Kelly and I ran The Samuel Fox at Bradwell for three-and-a-half years before opening Peppercorn two-and-a-half years ago. It was hard, hard work but a great experience and made us much better prepared for owning our own place. There is no typical day as a chef – each day is different and I love that. I love working with delicious, fresh produce, getting the chance to be creative every day and, most of all, making people happy when they eat my food. My signature is braised shoulder of lamb with mashed potato and creamed savoy cabbage. It’s a relatively simple dish but super delicious. 289b Abbeydale Road South, Sheffield, S17 3LB Tel: 0114 235 0101 www.peppercorn-restaurant.co.uk

I couldn’t think of anything better than getting paid to cook! There’s no such thing as a typical day at Losehill House and I really enjoy having the freedom to create new dishes. I have previously worked at The Prospect Restaurant in Bakewell, East Lodge Country House Hotel in Rowsley, The Rutland Arms Hotel in Bakewell, Pleasant Street Brasserie in Lytham and have been at Losehill for just over eight years now. My advice for aspiring chefs is that it won’t be easy but listen, work hard and keep an open mind. Losehill Lane, Edale Road, Hope, S33 6AF Tel: 01433 621219. www.losehillhouse.co.uk

Andy Lax Nonnas

Credit: Marc Barker / www.marcabarker.com

I’ve enjoyed working as part of the Nonnas team now for nine years. I had a short spell at another restaurant but soon came back! My journey into becoming a chef started at a young age. I’d always enjoy baking on a Friday night with my mum and we’d take it to my gran and grandad the following day. I loved the tradition and it developed my love of food and cooking, which has stayed with me ever since. We won Best Italian Business in England last year so demand for our cooking has been very high. It’s our 20th anniversary this year so we’ve got a few surprises up our sleeve… 537-541 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PR Tel: 0114 268 6166 www.nonnas.co.uk Â

Mohammed Sobuj Miah Prithi Raj

Kamil Miroslaw Bajorek West 10

I came to West 10 when I was 22 and, after almost four years as sous chef, I became head chef last September. I used to work as a kitchen porter but watching my colleagues working in the kitchen gave me inspiration and motivation. My work friends helped me to believe in myself and gave me lots of opportunity to improve. Watching people eating and enjoying our food is a great reward and it makes me proud of myself and my team. Jonnie lets me make my own decisions about the kitchen and the menu. That means he trusts me and believes in my ideas and loyalty, which I really appreciate. 376 Fulwood Road, Sheffield, S10 3GD Tel: 0114 230 9190 www.west10winebar.com

Ever since I first stepped into the kitchen I have been passionate about creating the most flavoursome dishes the Indian restaurant business has ever seen, and that is still the aim. Before taking over as owner and chef of Prithi Raj, I had successful restaurants in Chesterfield and Tickhill. The dish I most enjoy preparing is a new one on our menu, the king prawn Rajistani. It has shredded potatoes with very small aubergines, spices and garlic cooked slowly in the pan and king prawns soaked in the sauce to allow them to absorb the flavours. 407 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PG Tel: 0114 266 6002 www.prithirajrestaurant.com

Shaun Bowes Dore and Totley Golf Club

I am a keen golfer with a single-figure handicap and enjoy mixing my passion for food with my thirst for golf to make the perfect recipe. For the past two-and-a-half years I have been serving up everything from breakfasts, snacks and sandwiches to fine dining and Sunday lunches at Dore and Totley Golf Club. I really enjoy working with a variety of fresh ingredients and spices; if you teach yourself about ingredients then the recipe world is your oyster. My signature dishes are steak and potato pie and rump of lamb in a special sauce. Bradway Road, Sheffield, S17 4QR. Tel: 0114 236 9872. www.doreandtotleygolfclub.co.uk

Andy Lawrence Napoleons Casino and Restaurant

I love making new things and I really enjoy cooking – I feel like it is what I was meant to do. The menu changes every month at Napoleons and we are always moving onto something new. Most restaurants only change their menu every three months so the fact Napoleons is so fast-paced makes it even more exciting. Richard Burden is also a great mentor in the kitchen. I would advise aspiring chefs to stick with it – it is really hard at first but with experience it gets easier. You meet a lot of different people with different strengths and you improve in skill and grow in confidence. 844 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8TD. Tel: 0114 266 1115. www.napoleons-casinos.co.uk

Robert Navarro The Plough Inn

Before I started working at The Plough Inn 12 years ago, I was opening head chef for a brasserie in Nottingham. Prior to that I spent most of my time working in London hotels and restaurants, interrupted by a stint in Amsterdam working for the Roux brothers. Being a chef gives you the freedom to be yourself. Being behind the scenes, you don’t have to put on any airs and graces, you just get to go in and have a good laugh doing something you enjoy with a group of like-minded people. It’s more of a lifestyle than other careers but one that can be fun and rewarding if you are prepared to embrace it. Leadmill Bridge, Hathersage, S32 1BA. Tel: 01433 650319. www.theploughinn-hathersage.co.uk

Alan Hill Cavendish Hotel

I have recently joined the Cavendish, having worked at other Chatsworthassociated hotels and restaurants for the last ten years. I have also worked at several Michelin-starred restaurants. I fell into cooking at a very early age. I wasn’t the greatest at school; I enjoyed the creative things much more than the numerical. Cooking from the Bero book at home, I realised it was something I enjoyed and the rest is history. I like cooking for people and being creative, as reflected in my signature dish of crab mayonnaise with avocado and cherry. Baslow, Derbyshire, DE45 1SP Tel: 01246 582311

WS Motoring

High and Blighty To celebrate the foundations of the company’s roots, Jaguar has added a patriotic edition to its flagship FType model. Named the British Design Edition, it’s essentially an all-wheel drive F-Type V6 S with some unique design touches and added equipment levels which would otherwise be optional extras. On the outside there’s a choice of red, white, blue or black paint and you get the Sport Design Pack which adds a black front splitter, body-coloured side sill extensions and rear venturi. There are some unique 20-inch satin grey

alloy wheels and some stylish Union Jack badging. Inside, the aluminium trim is replaced with carbon fibre, there’s Jet leather throughout with 14-way sports seats and an upgraded stereo system. Available to order now. Priced from £75,225.

Jaguar’s true Brit is the pick of this month’s motoring bunch, writes Jordan Cutforth.

New Merc is an E-Class above

Business personnel of the UK, we have some good news – there’s a brand-new Mercedes E-Class available to order right now. We really do mean brand-new and not like the new DS3 featured elsewhere on this very page which is just a facelift and some new gizmos. The first deliveries of the car – which will be in May –will only be available with a 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel engine producing 192hp and 295lb ft of torque which will manage 72.4mpg and 102g/km of CO2. In the summer there’ll be a 258hp 3.0-litre V6 diesel managing 55.4mpg and 133g/km of CO2 yet it can still sprint to 62mph in 5.9 seconds. A 279hp petrol-electric hybrid will be available later in the year. Prices start from £35,935.

Clubman All 4 adds drive to the Mini range

If you ever wanted a Mini with four-wheel drive but for whatever reason you didn’t want the Countryman, your options were very much nonexistent. Now, though, in 2016, there is a four-wheel drive Mini that isn’t a Countryman. Say hello to the Clubman All4. Available from April, the fourwheel drive system will on be available only on the more powerful Cooper S Clubman and Cooper SD Clubman models. The Cooper S Clubman can achieve a 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds and emission figures up to 44.8mpg and 146g/km of CO2 thanks to the 192hp 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. The Cooper SD Clubman can achieve a 7.2 second 0-62mph time and average 58.9mpg through a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel unit. Prices start from £24,305.

DS stands proud

No longer just a posh Citroen, the DS brand is finally independent within its own right, and to celebrate we’ve been given the brand-new DS3. Actually it’s not an all-new model, but just a facelift version of the previous car with more personalisation options than ever before and powered by an array of new award-winning engines. So basically it’s still a Citroen, but don’t mention that to your local DS dealer. It still retains the old car’’s charm, which is a very good thing, yet it’s plusher and more technologically advanced. There’s the addition of some new economical three-cylinder petrol engines as well as a new ‘Performance’ model – replacing the limited-run DS3 Racing, which comes with the same engine as the Peugeot 208 GTI.
