Sheffield Theatres’ artistic director Robert Hastie
elcome to our March issue of Westside. This month we celebrate the anniversary of a Sheffield institution - the Crucible theatre. We speak to artistic director Robert Hastie about the 50th anniversary season and the author of a new book which details the theatre’s extraordinary history. We think spring for the home and garden, as well as your beauty regime, and also look ahead to Mother’s Day. Schools come under the spotlight in our education special and we meet some chefs to find out their kitchen secrets. Elsewhere we dine at three local restaurants, including an interesting newcomer, and have your usual mix of motoring, travel and more.

HOME & GARDEN
Think spring... clean PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR THE NEW SEASON. BY TAMZIN KRAFTMAN ith the temperature rising and the flowers blooming, the darker days of movie marathons in your Christmas pyjamas is over. It is now time to emerge from your winter cave and prepare your home for the upcoming months of fun, friends, and family in the sun. If you’ve been putting off the task of the big spring clean – just spring into action with these simple steps for a happier and brighter home.
W
*** Disinfect door handles
now, rather than pulling out a sun-lounger in June to reveal a large hole in the middle.
Flowers
With colds, the flu and Covid being passed around, a great place for nasty viruses and bugs to linger is on our door and cupboard handles. If you or your family found yourself under the weather during the winter months, it might be worth giving these commonly used surfaces an extra clean.
Spring is the perfect time to watch some flowers bloom. While the Chelsea Flower Show might be a bit far from your doorstep, bring the flowers to you, by planting an array of daffodils and tulips to brighten up your home and garden. If outdoor planting isn’t for you, house plants are a very popular choice that allows you to bring the outside, inside.
Clean garden furniture
Spruce up the exterior
As spring and summer approach, now is the time to make sure that your garden furniture is in tip-top shape. With snow, sleet, and gale-force winds, you might notice some damage, or see things you need to replace. You’ll be glad you checked
While you can’t judge a book by its cover, seeing months old Christmas lights might not give visitors the best impression. Repair the ravages of winter by sprucing up the exterior of your home – remove any weeds that have grown, rearrange

HOME & GARDEN
your front garden, and even clean the front door. You might want to invest in a brand-new front doormat.
Clean ceiling fans If you have a ceiling fan, you probably haven’t used it much over winter. As a result, you might find a rather large build-up of dust and grime. To ensure you don’t end up covered in cobwebs when you turn the fan on again, make sure you give it a good dusting. If you don’t, you’ll be circulating dirty air through your home.
Painting and wood-staining You might find that the wintery weather has caused outdoor surfaces to need a new lick of paint. It’ll help protect them from the elements and make them look brand new at the same time. And don’t forget wood surfaces – you can stain fences, gazebos, tables and chairs so that they’re summerready too.
Wipe down the fridge Thanks to Christmas, you might find that your fridge is looking a bit worse for wear. With the remnants of gravy and leftover sprouts stuck to the back of the fridge, now is the perfect time to give your fridge a good deep clean. If you’re feeling lazy, you might find that the shelves fit in the dishwasher
Wardrobe Get your wardrobe summer-ready by replacing those cozy jumpers with your favourite pair of shorts. This also gives you the chance to ‘Marie Kondo’ some of your old clothes and see what might need repairing or simply throwing away.
Clean upholstery We’ve all spent a lot more time indoors than outdoors over the past two years – and so have your children and pets. This means that your settees and chairs will be covered in dust and hair. Fire up that vacuum cleaner and your home will be cleaner than ever in no time.
Attract Animals With animals coming out of hibernation, you might find them wandering through local parks and even your garden. Why don’t you use this opportunity to make like Attenborough and encourage some wildlife into your garden? A new squirrel or bird feeder might encourage a whole host of animals, while if you have a pond – make sure it’s been cleaned.

ewly-opened on Townhead Road in Dore, Dales & Peaks is an independent, family-owned estate agency launched by Sarah and John Currey in 2006. This new office joins existing locations in Chesterfield and Matlock and serves this south-west corner of the city as well as the Peak District. Sarah and John’s aim was, and still is, to offer a personal level of service expected by a family-owned business, alongside a professional approach backed up by years of experience within the property and finance sector. Dales & Peaks started out as a letting agent and quickly became one of the leading agents locally, representing some of Chesterfield’s most iconic developments, such as Bradbury Place, Belmont Park and Piccadilly Heights. Son Tom joined the business in 2016 to develop the sales division, rebrand the company and raise their game on marketing and exposure. With a modern approach to marketing and a strong eye on the company’s personal and professional ethos, sales are growing drastically. Dales & Peaks was the first estate agent in the north to introduce 3D tours as well as professional photography as standard, although the latter has become more common across the industry. Tom oversaw a big move into social media – you’ll find them on Facebook and Instagram – which helped to enhance their services even further. The family business consistently achieves 99.96 per cent of asking price
on sales and holds the number one spot for property views locally on portals like Rightmove and Zoopla. Tom will be heading up the new Dore office alongside Debbie Seymour, who has been with Dales & Peaks since 2010, and Holly Parker. “We’d been wanting to move into Sheffield and Dore is one of those areas you would like to be,” said Tom. “It’s close proximity to the centre of Sheffield, as well as the Peak District, makes it a very attractive area and we feel it sits well with our brand. “As an independent, family-owned business we have the capacity to look after everyone individually and offer a real personal service. We can handle the whole process from start to finish.” Last year proved to be a very good year for the property industry, with this corner of south-west Sheffield performing particularly well, something Tom and his team hope to capitalise on. "Buoyant markets in both 2020 and 2021 have created strong momentum going into 2022," added Tom. "Sellers seem understanding that they have to put themselves in the best possible position to be able to proceed on their dream home when it comes available and buyers seems willing to wait for the right property, often with strong competition. “We’d advise anyone looking to move that they are in a position to proceed as quickly as possible.” The Dales & Peaks Dore office is open now – pop in and let them help you find your perfect property.

Birkdale School Birkdale is a happy community. From their earliest years, pupils at Birkdale acquire an appetite for knowledge, strong personal values, a sense of responsibility and the ambition to be the best they can be, all strong foundations for life. An exceptionally high level of pastoral care together with a strong Christian ethos underpins daily life here, and in this caring and supportive environment the pupils flourish as they explore all the opportunities open to them. Excellence is evident throughout the school, not least in the resources and outstanding teaching by professional and dedicated staff. With such close guidance and support, the pupils develop intellectual curiosity, enjoy their lessons, gain excellent examination results and are well prepared for future study. Hope Valley College A real alternative for Sheffield students – just a bus ride away Hope Valley College is a small, friendly secondary school, nestled in the heart of the beautiful Peak District countryside. The school is the daily destination for just over 500 students aged 11-16, who travel from across Derbyshire and Sheffield. Small enough for every student to be known by name, the school enables each young person to shine in their own right. The nurturing approach of the school is clearly working: it is one of the best performing non-selective schools in Derbyshire. Being a part of the Chorus Education Trust means that, after Year 11, Hope Valley College students then have priority access to Sheffield’s Silverdale Sixth Form.

They also have after school, French and holiday clubs for those aged five to 11 years. Both nurseries have ‘OUTSTANDING’ in their Ofsted reports. It also has the quality assurance of being an Investor in People (GOLD) and is an accredited training centre for CACHE (the leading qualification in childcare). S. Anselm’s School S. Anselm’s in Bakewell has been crowned Prep School of the Year at the Tatler Schools Awards Ceremony 2021. The award is in recognition of S. Anselm’s achievements as it goes from strength to strength as a leading preparatory school in the heart of Derbyshire. Committed to a blend of tradition and innovation, we were applauded for our tireless approach to ensuring no child was left behind during lockdown; with live online lessons, one-to-one sessions and the delivery of a full syllabus throughout what was a challenging time for so many. Recent initiatives include a remodelled and expanded boarding house, a delightful redesigned Pre-Prep area and the introduction of an end-ofday daily reading session for all children to boost learning and mental wellbeing, as well as encouraging a life-long love of books. Head, Mr Thompson, said, “Clearly this is wonderful news for S. Anselm’s School and a much-deserved reward for the outstanding work of all members of staff. It is the expertise, strength and dedication of our team, working together so effectively with a shared vision, that has led to the school’s considerable success in recent times. “Every colleague has contributed to this fantastic achievement. I would like to also thank our pupils, parents and our Board of Governors, as their ongoing loyalty, commitment and support, has made S. Anselm’s the wonderful family it is today.” www.sheffieldvibe.com 33

Experts in girls – the benefits of a girls only education HEAD NINA GUNSON TALKS ABOUT WHY BEING AN ALL GIRLS’ SCHOOL MAKES SHEFFIELD GIRLS’ SPECIAL. heffield High School for Girls was one of the first girls’ schools in England, set up nearly 150 years ago by a group of pioneering and determined women who believed that girls were entitled to the same academic education as their brothers.
S
Are schools for girls still relevant? There is still a need for great girls’ schools that teach academic subjects and also offer girls the chance to develop their creativity, problem-solving and independence of thought in an environment designed around their specific needs. I’ll start with a small caveat. A good school is a good school. There are good co-ed schools and good single sex schools. All schools are different, and some schools will be a better fit for each child than others.
With that said, I want to tell you why I believe girls’ schools are better for girls. Schools like ours are able to offer a learning environment dedicated to girls’ learning needs and preferences, free from gender-stereotyping and free from distraction. It’s well documented that girls do better academically in an all-girls school. When looking at GDST school lists, you can see that at both GCSE and A Level, pupils in these all girls schools continue to outperform their peers in coeducational state and independent schools. If you want excellent exam results, then sending your daughter to a girls’ school makes sense. But there’s so much more to a great education than just exam results. And certainly, top universities are looking for 34 www.sheffieldvibe.com
students who have a broader skill set and experience beyond the classroom.
Head Nina Gunson
So how do girls’ schools give their pupils an advantage? There is less gender stereotyping at single-sex schools. In girls-only schools, the proportion of girls studying subjects like Maths, Physics and Computer Science at advanced level is significantly higher than the figures for girls nationally. Girls are more likely to apply for courses such as engineering at university if they attended an all girls school. This doesn’t mean that we think the sciences or maths are better or more important than languages, humanities or the arts, but we do recognise that women are under-represented in these – in a school like ours every subject is a girls’ subject. But we are not just talking about attitudes towards certain subjects or
career paths; girls and young women face relentless pressure from seeing and hearing gender stereotypes on a daily basis, with girls as young as seven saying these stereotypes affect their ability to say what they think.
How does Sheffield Girls’ tackle this issue? Schools like ours play a vital role in combating these pressures which can have a powerful and damaging effect on the choices girls make. Single sex schools

describe the ethos and atmosphere that they work so hard to nurture. I am so proud of the culture in our school – there is a strong sense of community built on mutual respect; every girl is free to be herself and our school values of positivity, kindness and courage can be seen in all that the girls do and achieve.
Every day, we see how girls excel in an ‘all girls’ environment.
provide an environment where girls can establish their own identities, attitudes and self-worth free from gender issues during those crucial formative years. At Sheffield Girls’ there are twice as many opportunities for girls – in leadership, drama, sports, music, public speaking and more. It’s guaranteed that a girl will be the head student. She’ll be the sports captain too. The director of the school play is a girl and so is the captain of the debate team. Girls learn to find their voice and speak up in an environment where they’re less worried about looking either too stupid or too smart. In an all-girls school like ours, there’s as much time and investment in netball as in rugby; in hockey as in football; in rounders as in cricket and many of our pupils are active in sports from the
earliest years right up until they complete their A levels and move on. The breadth of extra-curricular activities on offer at Sheffield Girls’ provides the girls with chances to be adventurous and self-sufficient, by completing expeditions both in the UK and overseas; to be creative, innovative and solution focussed, by entering, and winning, national and international competitions in everything from art and creative writing to robotics and engineering; and to develop their employability skills by volunteering in the community and running their own enterprises in school. All this helps develop a self-confidence that stays with them throughout their lives and confidence and leadership qualities are just the sort of things that leading universities and employers look for in applicants.
The world was not designed by women and it wasn’t designed for women. But all girls’ schools are. Girls, for a variety of reasons, tend to have learning needs, styles and preferences that are different to those of boys and teachers in girls’ schools are experts in teaching in ways that help girls learn better. Single-sex settings allow teachers to focus more effectively on the needs of individual girls. And girls achieve more when they are given their own dedicated space in which to develop. Girls’ schools are inspirational learning and living environments which aim to nurture each pupil’s potential and develop her as an individual. Unless you have spent time in a girls’ school, it is hard to
In summary, girls who attend girls-only schools: • are less likely to conform to gender stereotypes • are less constrained in their choice of subjects • show a greater propensity to take risks and to innovate • perform better in examinations • have more opportunities to show leadership, • are more career orientated, and • go on to be more successful in the job market. The GDST describes its schools as places where girls learn without limits, and at Sheffield Girls’ our pupils leave with the confidence and the capability to lead lives without limits. We firmly believe that girls’ education has never been more important because it has a purpose and a unique position in a world that can only benefit from the contribution these girls will make to a better future for us all. Celebrating women SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR EQUALITY THIS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY BY CELEBRATING AT LOCAL EVENTS OR WITH LOVED ONES. BY MARIA ILIFFE. he 8 march is a very important and globally recognised day, used to celebrate women’s achievements and promote change towards an equal society. International Women’s Day helps raise awareness about problems women face in their everyday lives due to their gender. For over a century the event has marked a day of celebration and advocacy for women’s rights and equality around the world, whilst commemorating the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. Appreciating the changes already made, Scotland became the first country to allow free and universal access to menstrual products and for the first time in the Olympics (2020/2021), there was at least one female and one male athlete in each of the teams participating. While these examples represent some of the incredible strides we’ve made in creating a more inclusive and equitable society, we still have a long way to go. By simply conversing with women you know to understand their opinions and issues or partaking in a celebrations or events, you can show your support. Last year the theme for International Women’s Day (IWD) was “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”, highlighting the impact that girls and women worldwide had as health care workers, caregivers, innovators and community organisers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year the theme is “Break the Bias”, which focuses on how we are all individually responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day. We can break the bias in our communities, workplaces, schools, colleges and universities; together, we can all break the bias - on International Women’s Day and beyond. This manifests in such simple conversations around women’s abilities, looks, job roles etc, it’s important to remember not treat a women differently and unfavourably, the way you wouldn’t to a man. “Imagine a gender-equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that’s diverse,
T

equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all #BreakTheBias.” In Italy, the holiday is observed by men giving yellow mimosas to women; In Bulgaria and Romania the day is seen an equivalent of Mother’s Day, where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers. In the UK celebrations will take place across the country, commemorating women and advocating for more positive change. Venues local to you will be holding events worth getting involved with, including local favourite Wentworth Woodhouse. The Grade I listed stately mansion and 87 acres of gardens, meadows and woodland, has impressive views over a deer park and lakes. Known for holding exceptional events,Wentworth Woodhouse welcomes you to celebrate International Women’s Day with Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce. Proud to be guest speakers at the event: Professor Dame Hilary Chapman, HM
Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire and Pam Goodison local expert glass artist. These inspirational women are ready to share their stories, from the NHS frontline to generous charitable work. After key talks enjoy a delicious hot fork buffet (with vegetarian options) and an array of tasty desserts accompanied by drinks and insightful conversations. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2020, at the current rate of change, gender equality will not be attained for another 99.5 years. Our world and company leaders play an integral role in forging the path toward change, but it’s also up to each and every one of us to get involved – and there is no action too small to get started. So why not send a picture of your #BreakTheBias pose to the IDN website, with more information on there, or join a local or online event to show support this year. The event at Wentworth Woodhouse is priced at £29.95+VAT for members.Visit www.brchamber.co.uk to find out more.

Skills on the agenda for new Chamber President Karen Mosley, Managing Director of HLM Architects, takes the reigns as new President of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, pledging to support and focus on levelling up skills across Sheffield. In November 2021, Sheffield Chamber was delighted to inaugurate Karen Mosley as the new President of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce. As the Chamber’s 114th President, and only third woman to hold the position, Karen’s aim for her presidential term is to focus on helping the Chamber unlock the untapped potential in Sheffield’s communities. Her ambition is to make it easier for younger people in Sheffield to follow their dreams by finding the job or starting the business that changes their life. This comes at a pivotal time, as leading organisations across South Yorkshire come together to deliver the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) under the Government’s Skills Accelerator programme. Currently piloting with eight trailblazer regions including South Yorkshire, the Skills Accelerator aims to rethink the region’s approach to skills development. By placing employers at the heart of the skills provision, it strives to create an agile and responsive skills system that offers new ways of training and empowering people in education and the workforce. Hitting the ground running, Karen has been appointed Chair of the Skills Accelerator Board, playing a central role in driving this project forward. Karen said: “Individuals with talent and aspirations are too often held back by the system. I want to change this
landscape, so our young people’s future is not shaped by their background, but by their hard work and determination. This is extremely close to my heart, as I myself experienced these same barriers 35 years ago at school. “To do this, we need to remove the obstacles and barriers that our young people face. And through LSIP, we are challenging ourselves to think differently. This project is bringing together voices and insights from our business community, skills providers, and wider stakeholders, to create a robust response around the skills needs which are relevant to our region. “I am delighted to be part of driving this forward, and delighted that my new role as Sheffield Chamber President provides an avenue where I can support this change. I am determined to focus on helping the Chamber to unlock the untapped potential in our communities during my presidency.”

What a statement LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE CELEBRITIES AND HOW THEY WEAR POLITICAL STATEMENTS, STYLED INTO THEIR OUTFITS. BY MARIA ILIFFE. Images © Buzzfuss / 123RF.com
elebrity style isn’t limited to pieces that simply look good on camera. Big-names like Natalie Portman, Rihanna, Travon Free, Jaden Smith among others, are examples of celebrities using fashion and their influence as a way to make a political statement. Seen on numerous occasions, celebrities dress to promote the ‘time’s up’ movement, fighting for a society free of gender-based discrimination in the workplace and beyond. Actress Sarah Hyland styled the campaign name as a statement t-shirt at a Los Angeles Women’s March. Later actress Jessica Chastain wore the same piece to attend ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’. More subtle examples include the many actresses at the 2018 Golden Globes, who wore simple, all black outfits, to call attention to sexual harassment and inequality. A similar example seen styled by many progressive celebrities, Prada’s “We Should All Be Feminists” t-shirt. Designed by the first female creative director at Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri, created the t-shirt based on the book, written by the Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Many celebrities have worn this statement top, such as Rihanna and Natalie Portman, for the Women’s Solidarity March in L.A. Dior has made more recent feminist features, with model and actress Cara Delevingne in a statement, custom Maria Grazia look. Her white bib top read “peg the patriarchy”, later explaining the statement’s empowering women and sending a message. Jaden Smith, well-known actor and rapper, prides himself in activism. The design featured a custom JW Anderson ensemble that referenced the artwork of AIDS activist David Wojnarowicz. Wanting to celebrate “the impact that fashion can have on culture”, Dan styled embroidered maps and globelooking men kissing, in support of gay visibility and rights. American comedian, actor and writer, Travon Free, wore the definition of a statement piece to last year’s Oscars. Arriving in a gold and black Dolce and Gabbana suit and bow tie, the inside of his jacket featured the names of individuals in the US who have been killed as a result of police brutality. Names such as Eric Garner, Duante Wright, Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and Tamir Rice, while his black Nike Air sneakers paid tribute to George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others. Rolex watches – why pay more? PA JEWELLERY’S WATCH-BUYING GUIDE GIVES YOU AN UPDATE ON THE SITUATION OF PRICING AND AVAILABILITY OF THIS CHERISHED BRAND. ertain Rolex watches, particularly the professional range, have been difficult to buy for a while, but in the last year or so things have moved to another level. Although key models would be absent, until recently it was normal for Rolex stockists to have 100-plus watches on display. Today, you will be lucky to find a dozen or so to choose from with those often the less popular options. Even if you do spot your dream watch you may find it has a plaque saying “exhibition only” meaning you can look but not buy. Recently, Rolex have put out a statement saying the shortage is due to an increase in global demand and explained that production can’t be quickly increased to meet this demand due to the highly skilled and labourintensive nature of manufacture. So, what does this mean for the secondary market? There are two parts to consider: the “normal” second-hand market and the models that are selling at a premium over the list price. The lack of supply of new watches
C
68 www.sheffieldvibe.com
encouraging people to consider preowned instead, means that prices on nearly-new watches are very strong, sometimes slightly over the list prices as the motivation to buy second-hand is about availability rather than price. There are still bargains to be had, particularly in slightly older watches, but prices are now based on what buyers are willing to pay rather than comparison being made to the new price. The premium models are mainly the professional range. Due to the extremely limited supply these watches are being offered in the secondary market at substantially more than the suggested retail prices; in the most extreme cases, up to three times those advertised on the Rolex website. If you’ve spoken to a stockist about one of these watches, you will be familiar with waiting lists, but today it’s not as simple as putting your deposit down and taking delivery in three to five years. Demand is outstripping supply to
such a degree that the distribution is being heavily curated; Rolex stockists are selling their limited allocation to select customers that have a history with the store and that they’re confident will not sell the watch straight on for a profit. Of course, this makes nearlynew pre-owned stock even more scarce, further driving up values. We hope this explains a bit about the current situation. If you have any questions or wish to know more, we are always happy to talk Rolex and offer advice. If you are in the market for a Rolex watch, we currently have an excellent selection in store, or if you are looking to sell your watch, we are always interested in buying and can also offer low-fee commission sales to give you the best possible return. A treat worth savouring AFTERNOON TEA CAN STILL BE SPECIAL, ESPECIALLY AT THE LAURA ASHLEY TEA ROOM, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. fternoon tea used to be something of a treat but has become much more commonplace over the last few years. From cafes to hotels, there is an endless choice of venues in which to indulge in this most quintessential of British pastimes. That’s not to say it still can’t be special and you’ll struggle to find a more stunning setting in Sheffield that the Laura Ashley Tea Room at the Mercure Sheffield Kenwood Hall Hotel & Spa. The charming space, with stunning views over the hotel gardens, just coming into bloom, is the height of sophistication. The high ceilings make full use of the stylish Laura Ashley décor which combines duck egg blue walls, teal and gold furnishings. Full height windows flood the space with light making it a delightful setting to partake in the English tradition of afternoon tea. The tearoom is located at the far end of the sprawling hotel and has its own dedicated entrance. You can reach it through the main entrance of the hotel but if you’re arriving by car, take an immediate right after entering the

Kenwood’s gates and follow the drive round, under the stone archway and you’re there. There’s ample parking at that end of the hotel too. The Laura Ashley Tea Room serves brunch as well as traditional afternoon and cream teas. My wife and I were definitely in the mood for afternoon tea so, after taking our delightful window table, we settled on a traditional version (£23 per person) - there’s also a savoury option on offer too. You can have a glass of prosecco (£6pp) or champagne (£9pp) to supplement your afternoon tea at an extra cost but a selection of loose leaf teas and coffee is included. My wife opted for prosecco but a pot of English Breakfast tea was enough for me. Our afternoon teas had a selection of finger sandwiches, on this occasion freerange egg mayonnaise, roast ham and Yorkshire piccalilli, Scottish smoked salmon and cream cheese, and Wensleydale and Henderson’s Relish rarebit. Cut into perfect rectangles, they were every bit as delicious as they looked. Moving up a tier, we both had plain
and raisin buttermilk scones (two each) served with Devonshire clotted cream and a choice of preserves – strawberry or blackcurrant jam, or lemon curd. Not being a big jam fan I opted for the lemon curd whilst my wife happily settled for the strawberry jam option. It’s the top tier that often makes the difference in an afternoon and Laura Ashley’s version didn’t disappoint. Lemon meringue, topped with a fresh blackberry, traditional Bakewell, Yorkshire parking and a chocolate and coffee mousse were sweet and indulgent, just as they should be. The golden age of theatre
LOOKING AHEAD TO SHEFFIELD THEATRES’ 50TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON, WE SPEAK TO ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ROBERT HASTIE, AND DELVE INTO THE HISTORY OF THE CRUCIBLE IN A REVEALING NEW BOOK. ince it first opened its doors on 9 November 1971, The Crucible Theatre has become a Sheffield institution and is revered not just locally, but globally too. When the idea for a new theatre was first mooted back in the 1960s, Colin George, then artistic director of the Sheffield Playhouse, took it upon himself to create something different and truly special. His vision was to create a community hub where everyone was welcome and a place where upcoming writers, directors and actors could have a platform to nurture and develop their incredible talents. To say he succeeded is something of an understatement. You can read much more about his journey, and
S
the obstacles he faced, in the second part of our interview over the page. Looking at the here and now, Sheffield Theatres has launched its 50th anniversary season with the production of Anna Karenina, which ran at the Crucible from 5-26 February. But the centrepiece of the celebrations will be Rock/Paper/Scissors, three plays that will take place across three theatres with just one cast - at the same time! It’s a theatrical first and something that Robert and his team are still putting the finishing touches to. The three plays, written by Chris Bush, are based around the same story - when the owner of Sheffield’s oldest scissor manufacturer dies, three generations go to war over what happens to the factory
site. Transform it into a fashionable music venue, redevelop into luxury office space, or continue as it is. Individual, and interwoven, you can enjoy each on their own. But see them all and you’ll be part of the biggest event of the year. Coming later in the year a version of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, adapted and directed by Robert, will run from 9-24 September and then the year will conclude with the return of the Standing at the Sky’s Edge, also written by Chris Bush. Originally slated to return in 2020, pandemic delays mean this hugely popular show will now get its second run this year. We spoke to Robert about this year of celebration and much more.

Rock/Paper/Scissors show image
You joined Sheffield Theatres in 2016. How would you describe your experience there so far?
Wow, where do I start? So much has happened since 2016, and when I took on the job I had no idea – none of us did – what the next few years would hold. But I expected it would be the greatest challenge and greatest privilege of my professional life so far, and I’ve not been disappointed! You’re celebrating your 50th anniversary this year, how does it feel to be artistic director during this significant time?
It’s an incredible honour. I started coming to the Crucible as a teenager, and my first professional job was working here as an actor, so this place means a lot to me, as it does to so many people. Those of us lucky enough to work here are only ever temporary custodians of something that belongs to every Sheffielder in the city, but it’s a special honour to be setting the programme that will take us into the next 50 years. And a big responsibility!
people who built this theatre complex 50 years ago, which let’s not forget was extremely controversial at the time. Rock, Paper and Scissors are three plays, telling three separate but interwoven stories with the same cast of characters. But crucially, all three performances take place at the same time, one in each of our three theatres. So the actors are moving between our three venues in real time. When a character walks off stage in the Crucible, they enter onto the stage of the Lyceum or the Studio seconds later. You’ve worked with writer Chris Bush before, you must have a good working relationship?
I count myself very lucky that my time here has coincided with Chris’s emergence as one of the most exciting
There’s an incredible line-up of shows this year. At the heart of it will be Rock, Paper, Scissors, a very unique undertaking. Can you tell us more?

writers the UK has, and one of the best this city has ever produced. When you want to commission something as risky and complicated as Rock Paper Scissors, or as epic as Standing at the Sky’s Edge, Chris is your woman. She’s also one of the funniest people I know. Have you worked out how it will work logistically?
Erm…sort of… it’s a voyage of discovery! There are lots of spreadsheets and maps flying around on our emails. Do you have cast in mind?
There are definitely parts that Chris has written to suit particular actors who have a relationship with Sheffield Theatres. But we’re also going to audition widely, especially amongst younger actors who have started their careers during this incredibly tough last two years. Four of the characters are specially written to give great roles to that generation. Sheffield Theatres has always been proud about spotting and nurturing the stars of tomorrow – this is the theatre where Sheridan Smith played Annie,Victoria Wood wrote and performed in her first play, and Bridgerton’s Regé-Jean Page played a schoolboy in The History Boys. Will audiences need to see all three plays to get the full story?
No definitely not. That was one of our first principles. Each play has to be able to www.sheffieldvibe.com 77

be enjoyed on its own. But if you see two – or all three – then your involvement in the stories will just grow and grow, and hopefully be really satisfying as more than the sum of its parts. We want people to spot connections and see how the characters’ lives weave together. Chris is fascinated by the unintended consequences of little actions – the way a casual, off-hand remark can change a person’s life without you realising it. So something that’s a throwaway moment in one play might be a major plot point in one of the others. You’ve got Shakespeare coming up later in the year - you’ve previously directed Julius Caesar and Coriolanus, what can you tell us about Much Ado About Nothing?
It’s Shakespeare’s sunniest comedy, and the prototype for every will-theywon’t-they romcom you’ve ever seen. It’s one of my absolute favourites, and a play I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Shakespeare works brilliantly in the Crucible. This is also being produced in association with Ramps on the Moon, a group of theatres working together to improve representation of deaf and disabled people on stage, so I’m really looking forward to working with some fantastic artists, some of whom will be new to Sheffield.
he 50th anniversary is the perfect time to look back at the extraordinary beginning of the Crucible theatre and you’ll find no better document to its history than in the new book, ‘Stirring Up Sheffield’ by Colin and Tedd George. Sir Ian McKellen, who wrote the foreword, described the book as ‘an adventure book, a story of how, against the odds, a new theatre was designed and built in Sheffield. Adventures need heroes and the principal one is Colin George, who in this memoir recalls in fascinating detail how a dream came true.’ Colin was the theatre’s founding artistic director and played an integral role in the creation of what was described at the time as a ‘daring venture’, not just in the building of a hugely expensive new theatre but one which had a controversial stage design. There are four types of stage design - proscenium arch, thrust, traverse and in the round. Proscenium arch (as in the Lyceum), where the audience sits in front of the stage, is the most common but, inspired by Sir Tyrone Guthrie who, in Minneapolis had overseen the erection of a thrust stage with designer Tanya Moiseiwitsch, Colin George wanted something different for the city, somewhere that could operate as a community hub and could showcase local writers and original productions. In 1966, Colin went to the town hall as part of a delegation to ask the council for a grant of money to assist running the theatre. In a bolt from the blue, the council were under the impression they wanted a new theatre and so a unique opportunity to design
T
wider audience, which is something we love to do. Finally, what makes Sheffield Theatres so special?
I often bang on about how the Crucible is the best space in the country to make theatre in, and I absolutely stand by that. It’s a magical stage, and actors love to work on it – the visionary people who designed our theatre got it just right. But really – and forgive the cliché – what really makes Sheffield Theatres special is the people. Our brilliant audiences, whether they’re life-long loyal returners, or first time theatre-goers trying something new. Our amazing participants in the huge number of different programmes we run for communities, schools, and youth groups. And the people who work here – you won’t find a more dedicated, passionate gang than these legends. Oh, and of course the Snooker die-hards. They’re a blast! To find out more, and ticket information, visit www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk or call the box office on 0114 249 6000.
And then Standing at the Sky’s Edge makes its return, how much are you looking forward to that?
I’m not sure I have the words to say how much! One of the most devastating blows of the pandemic for us was having to postpone the return of this show that meant so much to so many people. But it’s finally on its way back, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. And following its run here it will transfer to the National Theatre in London, so we get to share this quintessentially Sheffield story with a 78 www.sheffieldvibe.com

a theatre from the ground up arose. Both Tyrone Guthrie and Tanya Moiseiwitsch came on board to assist and advise Colin once it was decided that the new theatre would have a thrust stage but this was a decision that drew opposition from all quarters, who felt any new theatre should be a civic theatre with a proscenium arch stage and host touring productions. This was not the vision that Colin and his Colin George, team had in circa 1962 mind and despite battles with groups including the ‘Three Knights’ - Sir Laurence Olivier, Sir John Clements and Sir Bernard Miles - the theatre was constructed under the original vision and opened on 9 November 1971. The Crucible is now synonymous with its thrust stage and has achieved everything that Colin set out to do, as his son Tedd explains: “He always insisted he was part of a team, but he was – as Tanya described him – ‘the Captain of the Ship’, and as the figurehead for the Crucible enterprise he bore the brunt of the criticism. “It makes me feel immensely proud of my dad and the people he worked with. I see his vision clearly in what the Crucible continues to do to this day: to be a meeting point for everyone in the community (not just for theatre), to provide a variety of entertainment and performing arts, and to promote local writers and talent. But I doubt that anyone involved in laying the first stone of the Crucible had any idea just how successful the theatre would become.” Although only artistic director from 1971-1974, the creation of the Crucible had a huge impact on Colin’s life and career and was always something he intended to write about in a book. He kept an immense personal archive, which was full of a lifetime of material related to theatre, drama, directing, acting and writing. When writing the first draft of the book, he assembled his Crucible files, around 25 boxes of them, something which his son, Tedd, inherited when he passed away in 2016. Finishing the book for him seemed the obvious and right thing to do but one that proved to be quite the challenge. “I don’t think I’ve ever taken on a project as challenging, engrossing or
Children on stage on the opening night
rewarding,” says Tedd, who is an economist, writer and broadcaster. “My father left a manuscript full of passion, stories and ideas, but there were so many parts of the story that were unclear. “Trying to piece it all together 50 years later, with so few of the protagonists alive to tell the tale, was an immense task. And I knew from the start that I would have to do it right – and consider every piece of evidence – or not do it at all.” It even got to the point where he thought he may not finish. “Fortunately, I had a hard deadline – 9 November 2021, the 50th anniversary of the Crucible’s opening night. I started work on the manuscript in early 2020, at the start of the first lockdown, and worked on it in bursts up to the deadline,” Tedd recalls. “There were some moments when, in the midst of a sea of information, I despaired I would ever finish. But as I progressed I picked up speed and made the deadline – although it’s amazing how many times I thought we were done, only to realise there was another issue to fix.” Although you see Tedd’s name on the cover of the book, alongside his father’s, it ended up being a real family effort, as he explains: “We are a theatre family at
heart and as will all great endeavours, everyone played their part. “My stepmother Sue worked closely with my father on the first draft of the book, and I took that work, assembled the archive and rewrote the book. At that point my sister Lucy stepped in, setting up her own imprint – Wordville Press – to publish and distribute the book.” The pride that Tedd feels after seeing the book in print is close to that he felt when he saw his father return to the Crucible for the first time in 2011 to perform alongside Dominic West, Clarke Peters and Lily James in Othello, which was coincidentally on his 82nd birthday and part of the theatre’s 40th anniversary celebrations. “To complete my father’s unfinished book is a huge personal achievement, and I don’t think I could have lived with myself if I had let this opportunity pass,” he says. “The Crucible now has a foundation myth, and one which recognises the many people who influenced its design – and those who opposed it. My father was a great believer in the need to tell and retell stories, so that they pass from generation to generation. “The Crucible’s extraordinary beginning was in danger of being lost to history and I feel its story is now ready for the next generation to interpret and be inspired by.” Stirring up Sheffield, By Colin George and Tedd George is out now.You can buy copies from wordville.net www.sheffieldvibe.com 79

Capital gains WITH HISTORY, TOP ATTRACTIONS AND BEAUTIFUL ARCHITECTURE, EDINBURGH IS HARD TO BEAT.
hilst the temptation to visit farflung shores has returned, the UK still holds plenty of charm for the casual traveller, particularly if you’re looking for a short break to entertain friends or family. With an abundance of history, top quality attractions and beautiful architecture, Edinburgh takes some beating. I took the whole family north of the border for a few days and loved every minute of it. I’d visited the Scottish capital before but purely for work purposes so was intrigued as to what the city had to offer from a leisure perspective. In short, it had everything.

If you’ve never visited before, Edinburgh is essentially a city of two halves (and much more besides). On one side you’ve got the medieval old town, which is characterised by its centuriesold buildings and narrow alleyways. At its heart, perched on an extinct volcano, is Edinburgh Castle. In the elegant New Town, Georgian townhouses line the broad avenues and open squares whilst shoppers hit chain stores on Princes Street and upscale boutiques on and around George Street. We’d picked the perfect base for our two-night stay. The Adagio Aparthotel Edinburgh Royal Mile was located in the
old town part of the city and just a tenminute walk from Waverley train station. The Royal Mile is one of the main thoroughfares in the city and connects the castle with the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which rests in the shadow of Arthur’s Seat. It is overlooked by impressive, towering tenement buildings and is home to many of the city’s main attractions as well as an abundance of souvenir shops, pubs and restaurants. The Adagio sits at the lower end of the Royal Mile and is a four-star residence offering 146 furnished apartments and studios fitted with a

fully-equipped kitchen. The rooms are perfect for those looking for a bit more space and flexibility, particularly if you’re staying for a much longer period. The aparthotel’s services includes access to a fitness room and private car park and breakfast is served in the cafeteria every morning (supplementary charge). We stayed in a one-bedroom

apartment for four people which had a bedroom with a double bed and a twin sofa bed which gave us more than enough space to relax. We didn’t take advantage of the kitchen during our short stay but can see the attraction for those staying longer - whilst there are plenty of food options close by, eating out can get expensive. We started our exploring on the old town side, heading up to the castle before turning down through the Grassmarket and up to the National Museum of Scotland. This free-to-enter museum is the UK’s most popular attraction outside of London and is worth visiting for the light-filled atrium of the Grand Gallery alone. Exhibitions cover Art, Design and Fashion, Natural World, Science and Technology, and Scottish History and Archaeology, the latter of which is housed in a modern extension to the building. Here there’s also a fabulous roof terrace with fantastic views of the city. Top of the agenda for my children was a visit to Edinburgh Zoo, which we travelled to by bus. It took about 20 minutes and an all-day family ticket (£9.50) offered great value for money. The zoo is set in over 82 acres of wooded hillside and is home to over 2,500 animals including the giant pandas Yang Guang and Tian Tian - the only ones in the UK. Both are housed in their own enclosures with large outdoor areas that have lots of trees, large wooden climbing frames and pond for them to explore. Unfortunately they were both sleeping during our visit but they were impressive all the same. Also at Edinburgh Zoo you’ll find
Tiger Tracks, a new enclosure which houses their Sumatran tigers and gives you the perfect opportunity to get up close to these magnificent beasts. The koalas Goonaroo, Tanami, Kalari, Inala and Dameeli are also housed in their own space and were hugely popular with my two children too. We also loved the penguins, pygmy hippos and giraffes. The zoo is easy to navigate and there are plenty of food options at the Grasslands Restaurant or Jungle Cafe. Plentiful picnic areas mean you can take in your own snacks too. Getting the bus back into the centre of Edinburgh gave us the opportunity to explore the new town’s shopping areas which has recently been enhanced by the addition of the St James Quarter, home
to 80 retailers and 30 restaurants. Food-wise we stumbled across a couple of independent gems that we enjoyed so much we actually visited twice. Civerinos has three ‘slice’ venues in the city as well as a main restaurant and serves New York-style pizza that was some of the best we have tasted. We visited one of their slice restaurants on Forrest Road, close to the National Museum of Scotland, for huge slices (starting from £4) of pepperoni and margherita pizza washed down with ice cold cans of San Pellegrino. It was simple but tasty. Just down the road from Civerinos is Alandas Gelato which opened in the autumn and use Scottish cream and milk to make their Italian-style ice cream. Served in a cup or a cone, it was delicious. There was so much we didn’t do – and would have loved to have done – in Edinburgh but felt like we’d packed plenty into our three days there. The Adagio Aparthotel was a great location from which to explore and we wouldn’t hesitate to stay there again should we wish to venture further. For a short break, it had everything – even giant pandas.
Factbox: The Adagio Aparthotel Edinburgh Royal Mile is located at 231 Canongate. To find out more, call 0131 322 8299 or visit www.adagio-city.com Tickets for Edinburgh Zoo start from £21.95 for adults and £12.80 for children. Visit www.edinburghzoo.org.uk to find out more.

Firm favourite RICHARD ABBEY VISITS NEWCOMER THE DARK HORSE – AND GETS A PLEASANT SURPRISE. f it looks like duck, tastes like duck, it’s got to be duck, right? Sorry, but you’re wrong. The duck fries at The Dark Horse, a newlyopened community bar and kitchen on Banner Cross, are of the vegan variety and you know what, it was hard to tell the difference. The Dark Horse had only been open a week when we visited but has already made a big impression, not just on myself but on the wider public it seems – the bar was packed throughout the evening. It’s testament to the hard work carried out by owner Andy Grice and his team as they converted the former Lloyds Bank into this welcoming space that already seems to be a great addition to the area. Aside from the name, the only nod you’ll find to the building’s previous life is that the toilets are housed in the old vault. Other than that the bar has been tastefully decorated with lots of light coloured woods, green tiles and seating. There’s options for tables outside too when the weather improves. You’ll find a good selection of beers on the bar from the likes of Magic Rock and Little Creatures, and this is matched

by a wide range of proseccos, wines, gins and more. Andy wanted this to be bar for everyone and he seems to have backed a winner. Food is provided by burger concession Slap and Pickle, who also operate at Heist Brew Co in the city as well as locations in Leeds and Manchester. The Vegan Duck Fries (£13 sharer) were one of the surprising, and standout, dishes from a menu that featured the expected burgers as well as more fries and loaded fries, and a good selection of veggie/vegan options. Chicken wings will have been added to the menu by the time you read this (there’ll be vegan versions too). We took recommendations from manager Adam and have him to thank for pointing us in the direction of the duck fries. Piled with vegan hoisin ‘duck’, hoisin sauce, vegan hoisin mayo, toasted sesame seeds, spring onions and red chillies, they were, in a word, delicious. The burgers faired just as well. You’ll find plenty of quirky names including the Han Solo, Personal Cheesus and, perhaps one for Sheffielders, the Mardy Bun, a double hamburger with stout and Henderson’s Relish cheese rarebit sauce,
smoked bacon and crispy onions. My Baconator (£9.95) – house double cheeseburger with bacon – I managed to get everywhere, which I think is always a good sign. The patties were particularly tender, the brioche bun toasted just right, it was great. My dining companion chose the Hey Hot Stuff (£9.95), a spicy double cheeseburger with jalapeno and roquito chillies and spicy mayo, which he said was perfectly balanced, the spicing just right. We also shared a portion of onion rings (£4.50). Whether calling in for a drink or food, or a bit of both, The Dark Horse is already a clear favourite. Not so much of a ‘dark horse’ but one that already looks like its got the potential to be a favourite. Give it a try. he OEC is the new venue for the Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards, with last year’s event there proving a huge success. The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing to give its full title – opened in 2020 on Penistone Road, Sheffield. It’s a new, ultra-modern and exciting venue with a 500-seater capacity, making it the perfect spot for large-scale parties, weddings and celebrations of all kinds. So, of course, it’s ideal for the local restaurant world’s biggest and glitziest celebration night! This year’s event looks like being bigger and better than ever. The Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards has grown in size and stature over the years and the versatile nature of The OEC means The Rivelin Suite on the first floor will cater for up to 500 people. So with an exciting venue settled and a date in the diary, the search for next year’s winners is set to intensify. Who will come out on top in 2022? Last year The Gallery Restaurant at the Cavendish Hotel Baslow came out on top. Last year was also particularly strong for newcomers with recently opened establishments such as Dunston Hall Bistro & Garden Centre (Best Newcomer), The Barn at Whirlow Hall
T
L-R: John Murphy (RMC Media managing director), Steve Daly (hotel manager, The Cavendish Baslow), Adam Harper (head chef, The Gallery Restaurant), Shaun Doane
Farm (Best Cafe/Light Bite) and The Wildcard Bar & Grill (Best Night Out) among our category winners. In recent years our awards have reflected the rapid improvement in standards in gastro-pubs, the growing influence of street food from around the world and an increasingly vibrant independent pub and bar culture. So will any new trends emerge this time around, and who will be our big winners? All will become clear in the next few months as we search out the
venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food and beverages in a superlative setting over the last year. All our recent award winners have been superb, so expectations are high. Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the 2022 Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk

MEET THE CHEF
Meet the chef A SELECTION OF LOCAL COOKS SHARE THEIR KITCHEN SECRETS, CULINARY LOVES AND FOODIE INFLUENCES.
L-R: Adrian and David
Chris Parker West 10
Adrian Gagea The Maynard
Adrian works largely at The Maynard but also at The George in Hathersage. Family has been a big inspiration to him. “My grandmother, great-grandmother and of course, my mother. All of these lovely ladies cooked for our families with such pleasure and joy, using simple and flavoursome ingredients with traditional techniques - resulting in consistently delicious food,” he said. Both venues utilise local produce which you’ll find throughout their menus but there’s one thing in particular that is Adrian’s favourite: “I love doing Sunday roasts. All of the fresh roast vegetables, duck fat and herbs roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese bubbling in cheese sauce, crispy Yorkshire pudding… and the most tender sirloin from our local butchers. I’d recommend it to anyone and everyone.”
David Palfi
The George, Hathersage David came to England around 2006 from Hungary and after having a few different jobs found his passion in the kitchen - he loved the atmosphere and vibe. He’s based at the newly-opened George in Hathersage and, backed by an ‘amazing team’, loves working with fresh fish as well as putting his twist on classic British dishes. “We have recently spent over £400k on a full refurbishment at the George, with a new menu too,” he said. “I really like salmon or mackerel, either smoked or not, and using fresh local vegetables to go with the seasons. “I really enjoy modern British cuisine. I like preparing traditional dishes with a modern slant, bringing twists, flair and new techniques to the dishes.”
90 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Chris has been head chef at West 10 on Fulwood Road for three years after previously working at the Kenwood Hall Hotel. West 10, a wine bar and restaurant, serves a fresh, seasonal a la carte menu with Chris’s favourite dish being lamb cannon, pea pureé, boulangiere potatoes, tenderstem broccoli and lamb jus - perfect for spring. It was food technology classes at school that made Chris realise he had a passion for cooking and he feels he is in the ideal place to achieve his ambitions. “I’ve got the freedom to create new menus and our customers really enjoy the food I cook,” he said. Asked if he had any advice for aspiring chefs he said: “Get the training done and find a kitchen where you enjoy working and can build your experience.” It’s clearly paid off for Chris as he was voted Westside’s Young Chef of the Year in 2019.
Reece Elliott
Raffina by Reece Elliott Raffina by Reece Elliott is a brand new venture, serving Italian inspired dishes with a modern twist, launching in March 2022. Chef Reece previously worked at the three-rosette Cavendish Hotel in Baslow, Derbyshire. Before that, he achieved second place in the BBC’s Junior MasterChef of Great Britain when he was 19 and in 2020, was a contestant in MasterChef the Professionals. "From a young age, I always wanted to cook," said Reece. "I took interest in how food was made and admired the process of it and put in the time to learn every detail. Cooking is my passion, and no other job would come close." Reece's signature dish is his cod fillet, delicately panfried and served with violet potatoes, romanesco (his favourite!), leeks, a squid ink cracker and bergamot buerre blanc. It's a real show-stopper. Asked if he had any advice, Reece said: "Work hard and never lose your passion. Nothing beats a passionate chef."

MEET THE CHEF
Andrew Wornes
Emily Buckley The Wheatsheaf Bakewell
Bank House Creativity is a big part of a chef ’s repertoire and is something that Bank House’s Andrew Wornes thrives on. “I’ve always liked to experiment, and what better place to do that than the kitchen,” he said. “As a family we spent a lot of time in the kitchen growing up, helping make the Sunday dinners and learning to make the most of leftovers. It’s all helped to push me towards a career in food.” Bank House serves mainly Mediterranean fare, from sharing platters and small plates to an à la carte menu. There’s a social dining bar area as well as a more formal first floor restaurant and private dining room. They are just launching their new spring menu in a move to make the Hathersage restaurant more seasonal. “It’s a way to really bring all aspects of the business together in to one coherent offering,” explained Andrew. “As a business we’re growing rapidly and just purchased our second site which will be announced soon. I was appointed as a company director last year and I suppose in five years’ time I’ll be overseeing a few kitchens. I like to think I’ll also still be cooking at Bank House as it’s what I enjoy. “
Michael Freeman
Wildcard Bar & Grill
Michael certainly knows his way round a burger or two after working at Yankees on Ecclesall Road for the majority of his career. Now he’s moved further up the ‘golden mile’ and has been with the Wildcard since it opened its doors in September 2020. The sports bar and grill serves predominantly American comfort food but also has a mixture of influences, specifically Mexican and Japanese. Michael’s career started at the tender age of 13 at his parents’ restaurant: “I started as a kitchen porter and never looked back!” he laughs. “I don’t think you choose your career, I think it chooses you and if you haven’t got a passion for it then you won’t last long.” He loves that every day is different and particularly working with fresh seafood, although he’s been told he does good BBQ over the years too. If he had any advice for aspiring chefs, he says: “Don’t try and run before you can walk, learn the basics!”
Like many chefs, Emily was inspired to follow her chosen career path by her family - “During my childhood, I watched and helped my mother and grandmother in the kitchen, making family dishes and baking cakes,” she said. The Wheatsheaf is a family and dog-friendly pub in the heart of the Peak District. Their fast pace of service and high quality food makes them very popular in the local area with both locals and tourists. Children under the age of eight eat free all day, everyday, and you’ll find weekly entertainment and a large function room for events. Emily describes herself as a ‘homestyle British cook’ but you’ll some things a little different on the menu. “We have recently launched our new Spring menu, which I created new dishes for, such as the haddock salad and the vegan curry,” she added. “Also we will soon be launching our brand new wedding packages, which include buffet and set menu options.” In five years time she would like to be working towards being a head chef and expanding her creativity by introducing more new menu ideas.
Lee Shortt Nonnas
Lee loves cooking Italian food and brings worldwide experience to his position of head chef at Nonnas, a position he has held for a year. Previously holding the same position at the Schoolrooms Cafe Bistro in Sheffield, Lee has also worked at Dore Moor Inn, Thirsty Flame in Brinsworth, Q Sports Bar and Grill in Brisbane, Australia, Flahertys Irish Bar in San Antonio, Ibiza and, closer to home,Vittles Cafe Bistro, Mama Amalfi Italian Restaurant, and Mamas and Leonies. Lee previously served in the army and after finishing his service decided to go back to college and train to become a chef. “I enjoyed baking and cooking with my mum when I was a kid so decided to take it up as a career,” he said. His morning is spent on food preparation and baking whilst the rest of the day is spent cooking customers’ meal. “I enjoy being a chef because you’re always on your feet and never bored,” he added. “I also like getting compliments from customers about my food. I also like a challenge, which cheffing is most of the time.”

MEET THE CHEF
Lee Swords
James Poon
“Eating is a primary function of life, as a species we cannot survive without consuming food and as far back as I can remember I’ve always enjoyed this aspect of our existence, hence I’m rather fat and I’ve made a career out of cooking,” says Lee. In chef terms, he is what is classed as an all-rounder and feels he’s a pretty decent one at that – “I must be,” he said. “Because I’ve spent the last 30 years working for Dave Allen in four of his Sheffield based catering enterprises.” Lee started at Josephines nightclub before moving onto Napoleons@Ecclesall Road before transferring to Napoleons@Owlerton and finally taking on the VIP boxes at the OEC. “Sometimes I can get quite sad at how food has evolved, especially the fast food/junkfood market,” Lee comments. “Food is an adventure, food can be a holiday on a plate, a romantic gesture, a dare or even a potent medicine, not only for the soul but also of the body, food should never be a rushed chemical filled afterthought. “We owe it to ourselves to eat well, you owe it to yourselves to trust your chef.”
James Poon has found himself at the helm of an array of five-star restaurants and hotels throughout China, Hong Kong and London’s bustling China Town, having worked in a kitchen from the age of nine. “I grew up in a poor part of China and so my mother encouraged me to train as a chef so that I could guarantee I was able to eat that day. From there, I developed a deep appreciation and understanding for food and creating new and exciting dishes.” James’ day to day consists of preparing fresh and where possible, locally sourced ingredients ensuring each plate is finished to perfection, with favourites including dim sum, har gow and char sui buns.

Alfredo Geci Maranellos
After being in the UK for two years, Alfredo started college studying catering and hospitality. This quickly grew into a passion for cooking, which in turn developed a hunger to have his own restaurant. Alfredo has now been the proud owner of Maranello’s restaurant on Ecclesall Road for seven years. He serves authentic Italian food, inspired by his time living in Italy, and his signature dish is Agnello Siculo, a succulent lamb dish which is slow cooked for four hours. It’s very popular with his regular customers. “This job requires passion and a lot of patience,” said Alfredo. “The reward is satisfaction and not always money. “I enjoy seeing customers walk out of my establishment happy and they return. It’s a great evening when they buy me a drink rather than the other way round!”

Shahab Uddin Jaflong
Shahab Uddin specialises in Indian and Bangladeshi food and has been working at Jalfong in Crookes for 20 years. He’s always worked in a restaurant environment and it’s a place he love to be. Shahab’s speciality dish is roasted lamb shank, which is cooked in a choice of Karahi, Jalfrezi or Bhuna sauce with sliced onions, garlic, ginger, fresh tomatoes and selected special herbs and spices, garnished with fresh coriander. He also recommends the Jaflong special, Bengal Tiger, which contains chicken tikka and lamb tikka, sliced onion, green peppers, fresh tomato, fresh coriander, chopped green chillies, fresh garlic and chef ’s special spices.
Erkland Xhaja Cubana
Albanian born Erkland Xhaja moved to Italy as a child before settling in Sheffield as a teenager. He joined Cubana in 2002, where he tells us it’s “all about the prep”. “We have a substantial, varied and interesting menu and are lucky enough to have a high turnover of customers,” and for Erkland, this means arriving early and getting on top of things. With a big emphasis on fresh dishes, Erkland’s menu requires care and skill to prepare, which is why he takes such great pride in his reliable kitchen team. He gets help from his family too, telling us that their support makes his job easier and that much more enjoyable.

EATING OUT
Best of both COMBINING A LIVELY BAR AND A COSY BISTRO, WEST 10 OFFERS THE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, WRITES CHIARA BRUNO. et in the chic suburb of Ranmoor, West 10 provides the optimal setting for an excellent evening out, combining an elegant restaurant and bistro upstairs, with a lively wine bar downstairs. My companion and I opted to sit upstairs in the restaurant for our meal, yet both spaces are available to dine in. We started our night with a refreshing glass of chardonnay (£6.50) and a little something to whet our appetite before ordering our meals: a serving of olives, crusty bread (still hot from the oven) and a generous helping of balsamic vinegar and oil dip. We deviated slightly from the menu’s enticing “While you Wait” option, which included all of the above along with a portion of camembert for £10, giving us time to peruse the menu and choose our starters and mains. Now, I’m always one for trying something a little bit different, so when I spotted the pan-seared wood pigeon starter (£8), I knew I just had to have it. The slow cooked pigeon was beautifully tender and was served with a burnt onion purée, complementing the naturally deep and rich flavour of the meat. The blackberries added an extra
S

layer of texture, mixing sweet with sour; an innovative combination. My companion opted for the more traditional ham hock terrine (£7.50), complete with slices of crunchy sourdough, homemade piccalilli, which packed a real punch, and two quail scotch eggs. With beautifully oozy yolks and crispy outer shells, I have to say that these were the best scotch eggs I’ve ever had. After my game starter, I fancied fish for my main and was torn between the classic beer battered fish and chips (£12), and what I eventually chose (after long deliberation!), the pan-roasted hake (£16). The fresh hake was cooked to perfection and served on a bed of crushed, herby potatoes, chorizo, heaps of green beans and a beautiful salsa verde, creating a delicate fusion of flavours. My companion also opted for a fish main by ordering an enormous bowl of mussels (£12). They were cooked in a creamy chorizo, leek and cider sauce, creating a unique taste sensation. The huge pot of crispy fries were an excellent accompaniment. Finally, after we felt we could eat no
more, the desserts arrived: a deliciously sweet frangipane and pistachio tart with strawberries (£7) and a panna cotta topped with a fruity citrus gel and berries (£7). Made with Greek yoghurt as opposed to cream, the panna cotta was fresh and light, giving it a welcome twist to the traditional Italian sweet. After our evening of wonderful food, we meandered back downstairs to the bar area, which was still very much full of life. And it was clear to see why; West 10 has an extensive wine and bottled beer list, as well as their contemporary menu offering a range of both modern and classic meals using locally sourced fresh ingredients. I know I’ll definitely be returning, and maybe next time I’ll treat myself to an extra glass of wine. West 10 376 Fulwood Road, Sheffield, S10 3GD Tel: 0114 230 9190 west10winebar.com

Some things never change... NONNAS CELEBRATES 25 YEARS IN BUSINESS AND WOULD LIKE TO SAY A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THEIR CUSTOMERS. cclesall Road has seen a lot of changes over the past 25 years but one thing has definitely remained true – the passion of Maurizio Mori. Nonnas – which he first unveiled in 1996 – became an institution within months of its opening. The Italian restaurant grew from humble beginnings to become a multiple award-winning business and, on one celebrated occasion, even a hang-out for Hollywood ‘A’-lister Sylvester Stallone. Post-pandemic and the restaurant is stronger than ever and Maurizio wants to say a big ‘thank you’ to the customers that have shown their continued support throughout the hardships of the past two years, and also over the past quarter of a century. He said: “It has been a privilege to be able to develop such a unique business over the years. I have always strived to do something

different and bring the flavour and style of our Tuscan homeland to Sheffield and give it a Nonnas twist. But I could never have done it without the amazing support of both customers and staff. “I still have as much passion now as I ever did so there’s definitely another 25 years in Nonnas yet!” Nonnas – which also has Maurizio’s childhood friend Stefano Buralli as its long-standing general manager – prides itself in a mixture of tradition, innovation and consistent quality of service. In recent months they have launched a brand new shop selling authentic Italian food/drink from the different regions of Tuscany. This includes the celebrated Caffe New York blend of coffee that is imported directly from the Tuscan coffee
bar which originally opened in Montecatini in the 1930s. Nonnas now has a seemingly neverending wine list, ranging from super Tuscan wines and Montecarlo wines, which is situated 15km from Montecatini (Tuscany) which is supplied from Buonamico wine estate. Striking revisions
Exceeding expectations The full breadth of the luxurious New Range Rover family is now available to order for the first time. Land Rover has confirmed prices for the advanced Extended-Range plug-in hybrid models and the exclusive Range Rover SV, while revealing performance figures for the plug-in electric powertrain are even stronger than originally estimated. IN BRIEF
Alfie’s short cut to fundraising success
Make a will and make a difference
Young Alfie Sansom has taken the short cut to fundraising success and raised more than £300 for St Luke’s Hospice. Alfie, who is 11 and lives with his family in Wincobank, has been growing his hair to waist length since he was in infant school. But when he heard of the treatment his grandma Pam had received during her time at St Luke’s Hospice, he decided he wanted to raise money as a thank you - and that the hair would have to go! So it was off to the Marcel Wave salon at Malin Bridge, where Pam was a customer, for a crop that would take Alfie’s hair to a more manageable shoulder length style. The unwanted hair is going to the Little Princess Trust, the charity that provides real hair wigs, free of charge, to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment and other conditions. “When he was very little Alfie actually had quite short hair but he started growing it when he was in Year 2 at school because he saw another boy with long hair and he liked the look of it,” said mum Natalie. “He knows all about the support that his grandma received from St Luke’s and decided he wanted to do something to raise money. “He was a bit anxious when he got to the salon - I think he thought they’d just snip it off and that would be it but it actually took quite a while to cut it off.”
Some of Sheffield’s leading law firms are joining forces with St Luke’s Hospice for a special project that could provide security for both families and the charity itself in years to come. St Luke’s Will Month is a partnership between the hospice and eight top city solicitors, running for a strictly limited period throughout the whole of April. And as well as providing the opportunity to make a will the whole family can depend on, St Luke’s is also asking people to think about leaving a special legacy and so help fund the hospice for future generations. Participating Will Month firms for 2022 include Taylor Bracewell, Best Solicitors,Graysons, Bell & Buxton, Rosalind Watchhorn, Coates, Irwin Mitchell and Banner Jones. The idea is simple – the participating solicitor of your choice draws up a basic Will in return for a donation to St Luke’s. Suggested minimum donations are £100 for a single will or £150 for a joint Will, with a £75 suggested charge for a basic amendment.
Swashbuckling classic for 50th birthday celebration A band of lusty buccaneers, a bevy of beautiful sisters, a troop of timid bobbies on the beat, the very model of a modern Major General, and a young pirate apprentice on the eve of his 21st birthday… or is he? Dore Gilbert and Sullivan Society celebrate their 50th anniversary with a vibrant new production of one of the most popular comic operettas of all time. The acclaimed Sheffield company was launched back in 1972 and since then The Pirates of Penzance has always been one of the society’s enduring and frequently revived shows. Now they’re setting sail again on a swashbuckling adventure in search of riotous comedy and magical music that comes to the Montgomery Theatre in Surrey Street from 6-9 April. This colourful new production is directed by Graham Weston, with musical direction by Martin Yates. “Dore are well known for presenting classic Gilbert and Sullivan and The Pirates of Penzance was one of our earliest shows so it seemed the perfect time to revisit what has always been one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s greatest and most enduring hits,” said society chairman Alan Wade. “This is our 50th anniversary celebration and after the disappointment of not being able to go ahead with our last show because of Covid restrictions, we want to make sure that both cast and audience have a truly memorable experience.” For tickets call 0114 2363797 or 07565 805405, visit doregass.weebly.com or email dore_bookings@mail.com 110 www.sheffieldvibe.com
