f there were any positives to take from 2020 - and let’s be honest, there weren’t many one of them was a strong and resilient housing market. Despite the ongoing pandemic, it seems that people, maybe prompted by extended periods in their own homes, were still keen to improve their property prospects and demand was clearly high. In fact, leading search portal Zoopla reported that house prices in England had increased by an average of £11,037 last year. This year looks to continue that trend and even at this early stage, interest is already high, particularly in south-west Sheffield and north Derbyshire, areas that benefit from good schools, parks and local amenities as well as excellent public transport links and access to beautiful countryside in the nearby Peak District. Our project for a family home in Grenoside Sheffield S35 was to refurb a bathroom, the brief for the new bathroom was to create a modern feel with some traditional features... The preparation for the new bathroom was removal of wall, resiting of new door and frame, plastering, tiling, electrics and install new plumbing. The photographs show the large free standing Pano slipper bath with a waterfall wall mounted bath spout, wetfloor shower area, all with concealed fixtures and fittings creating a sleek new feel, with his and hers Sottini vanity basins with wall hung storage units. Quartz worktop fitted giving the wow factor and style. Floor tiling done in a traditional central tile complementing the more modern wall tile. Feature wall painted in a warm sage green. Two bluetooth speakers inset into the ceiling, concealed shaver point and storage space within walls. Underfloor heating as well as duel fuel chrome towel warmer.

BUT WHO IS THE MAN BEHIND STEEL CITY SKIES? t’s become the trusted source for accurate local weather. Come rain or shine, thousands of Sheffielders are choosing Steel City Skies over the likes of the BBC, Met Office and local media for their forecasts. But who is the man behind the hugely popular weather forecasting page? That man is Stephen Vincent and he’s not a meteorologist but a teaching assistant at a primary school in the north of the city and also recently qualified as a Forest School practitioner. Weather is his hobby, his passion and Steel City Skies is a service he is happy to continue to provide.

Stephen, who also lives in north Sheffield, has been running the page for three years after friends and colleagues at work often asked him what the weather was going to be like for the weekend or the holidays. The rest, they say, is history. We caught up with the weather enthusiast to find out more and, more importantly, to ask what kind of weather we can expect this summer. Tell us about Steel City Skies.
Steel City Skies is a weather forecasting page specialising in accurate forecasts local to Sheffield. Every morning there’s a forecast for the day, with weekend outlooks on Thursday evenings and week-ahead forecasts published on Sundays. When inclement or interesting weather is in the offing, extra posts are published. Do you post daily?
Yes! I write up a daily forecast every morning that publishes between 6 and 6.30am.The forecasts follow a text and accompanying graphic format with a photo background. On occasion I credit and share photos that my followers have uploaded to the page - it helps keep a local connection to the page and develops a sense of community. I’m pleased to say those that followed the page from the very beginning are still there! What qualifies you to forecast the weather?
Almost all of the hobbies I’ve had are ones I dip in and out of - they never truly hold my attention. Weather is the

one exception and it has been a constant fascination for me. Though I have no formal meteorological qualifications, I take forecasting very seriously and use high-resolution data from weather models to support the forecasts that I write for Sheffield. I’ve also been a member of online weather communities for over ten years and learnt from some very knowledgeable members. How would you describe Sheffield’s climate?
Varied would be the best word! We do benefit from the shelter of the Peak District and the southern Pennines so we are not as rainy as Manchester for instance. I’d like to think we have a very balanced climate here, positioned where we are in the UK. We get our fair share of snow in winter but we also tap nicely into summer heat when it comes as well. I’m thankful that we have such amazing scenery on our doorstep to experience it all, too. Have you ever got it drastically wrong?!

trickiest element when forecasting for Sheffield is definitely snow. Given the varied topography of the city it is a real challenge to be accurate when forecasting how much snow is going to fall. It is not an exaggeration to say that you can have the city centre with a bit of slush and a more elevated suburb of Sheffield just a mile or two away buried in deep snow! As such, I have learnt to be as specific as possible when forecasting snow. I’ve learnt that the hard way! Do you get recommendations for forecasts?
Occasionally someone will get in touch and ask for a more specific forecast, such as a holiday forecast or for a significant event. The page seems to be recommended regularly as almost all of the page growth is due to likes, comments and especially shares of my page which is really heartening - I’m grateful for every single engagement. Do you have any other hobbies?

travelling to a location where particularly severe storms are forecast and positioning carefully to get the best footage and photos of the storm structure without getting clobbered by it. It’s not quite as lairy as the chasing in America but it’s enough to get my adrenaline going. I also like to walk in the Peak District and photograph wildlife and landscapes. To stay fit and active I play five-a-side football every week. What are your favourite parts of the city?
I love socialising with friends in the city centre - I can’t wait until we can all mix safely again and breathe life back into the city. Otherwise, I’d have to say the nearby Peak District - I know I’m straying a little outside of Sheffield strictly speaking, but I know it’s a big draw for those who end up moving to Sheffield and if I ever leave the city it’ll be one of the biggest things I’ll miss. Any favourite places outside of Sheffield?
I studied up in Scarborough so that’s
always the first place that springs to mind. It’s so different to Sheffield of course with its gorgeous coastline so it was a really unique experience to live there for four years. I’m hoping to go back there in the near future and visit friends. Will you be going on holiday this summer?
I’m not planning anything spectacular, thankfully I got my travelling in before the pandemic began. My brother is working up in the Lake District - a stunning part of the world - so I’ll visit him when I can but otherwise it’ll be smaller trips to some of the more local beauty spots. That’s just fine though, I think our economy could do with more staycations this year. Most importantly, what’s the summer going to be like?
Given the weather’s propensity for heat these days I would expect another above-average summer in terms of temperature. I know I’m not exactly sticking my neck out but I think overall it’ll be a pretty mixed summer with

unsettled patterns alternating with spells of potentially significant heat. The way we’ll remember our summer is if any such pattern sticks for a lengthy period of time, as has been the case in recent years (remember the winter Beast from the East?). If a pattern does stick it’ll prove difficult to shift which is when we experience something more notable, whether it be significant rain, storms or heat. How long will Steel City Skies keep running?
As long as I have a passion for the weather and live in Sheffield there’s no reason for me not to stop as I still really enjoy it. I’ve built up a loyal following who appreciate the straight-talking forecasts, humour and local flavour. What to do after lockdown? As restrictions start to ease, we look at things to do and places to visit, from cinemas to theatres and more. Words: Anna Oxborough
he last year has been hard for every one of us.We have had to adapt to this new way of life.The endless lockdowns, the new ways of working from home, kids being off school, not being able to see any friends or family and limited social contact with anyone. It has been a little hard. However, it seems things are looking up and there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Prime Minister, Boris Johnson has released a roadmap of what will be opening up on no earlier than 17 May and the summer months.These things include restrictions on meeting people

outdoors being lifted, however, meeting groups over 30 people will still be illegal. Most businesses will reopen, indoor entertainment and attractions; cinemas, play areas and more. Hospitality sectors like pubs will be invite customers indoors and no substantial meal will be required with drinks, but it has to be table service. Hotels and B&Bs will open up and allowed to go ahead are group sport and exercises classes. Performances will also be allowed to go ahead with indoor events holding up to 1,000 people or half full (whichever is the lower number). Outdoor events will hold up to 4,000 or
half full and outdoor seated venues can hold 10,000 or quarter full. Up to 30 people can now attend weddings, receptions, wakes and funerals. Following on into the summer months, from 21 June there will be no legal limits on social distancing and life events. Also, nightclubs will reopen, and they will be easing restrictions on larger events. We can soon get life back to normal and start to look forward to things again! It seems as though being able to have a meal with your friends, going to a music event, going to see the newly released film in the cinema is nearly in our reach.

Music Live music has been a big miss for many but, fingers crossed, performances should be able to resume inside and out from 17 May onwards. Many venues still seem to be airing on the side of caution with gigs pencilled in for later in the year rather than straight away, although no doubt this will change in the coming weeks and months. At the Arena you will be able to catch re-arranged performances from the likes of JLS (28-29 October), Steps (2 November) and Gary Barlow (2 December). In the city centre you can catch Tom Grennan (19 September), Declan McKenna (21 September) and Sheffield’s own Heaven 17 (13 November) at the O2 Academy, and Patawawa (12 June), Levellers (25 June) and You Me at Six (10 July) at The Leadmill. The potential for festivals taking place over the summer months is still up for debate. Tramlines, due to take place over the weekend 23-25 July, have yet to confirm or cancel and the same can be said for Derbyshire’s Y Not Festival (30 July-1 August). The coming weeks and months will reveal much more but if the events are cancelled, any ticket purchases will be rolled over to next year. One festival that looks set to go ahead is the Wentworth Music Festival (18 September), which takes place within the grounds of Wentworth Woodhouse. Confirmed performers so far include The Feeling, Cast, Space, Bang Bang Romeo and on the comedy stage, Steve Royle, Justin Moorhouse and Susan Murray.

Theatre Like cinemas, Sheffield’s theatres will hope to have audiences back from 17 May. After the fantastic The Band Plays On, which was screened virtually in March, The Crucible has yet to confirm any further productions, although Standing at the Sky’s Edge, postponed last December, is expected to return for the festive season. Across Tudor Square at the Lyceum, there are a number of touring productions lined up including Heathers, which will run from 8-12 June. Based on the film of the same name, it centres around Westerberg High, where popularity is so very a matter of life and death, and Veronica
Sawyer is just another of the nobodies dreaming of a better day. But when she’s unexpectedly taken under the wings of the three beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity finally start to come true. Until JD turns up, who teaches her that it might kill to be a nobody, but it’s murder being a somebody. Chicago (22-26 June) is the classic tale of murder, greed, corruption, exploitation, adultery and treachery set against the backdrop of one of the best musical scores out there, and is followed by 9 to 5 (29 June-3 July), Dolly Parton’s musical which tells the story of three workmates
pushed to boiling point by their sexist and egotistical boss. Concocting a plan to kidnap and turn the tables on their despicable supervisor, will the women manage to reform their office - or will events unravel? Dial M for Murder (13-17 July) is the genre-defining Hitchcock thriller and sees TV and stage favourite, Tom Chambers, (Top Hat, Strictly Come Dancing) star as the charismatic and manipulative Tony Wendice, a jaded ex-tennis pro who has given it all up for his wife Margot. When he discovers she has been unfaithful his mind turns to revenge and the pursuit of the ‘perfect crime’.

Comedy Let’s be honest, we could all do with a laugh after the last 12 months. I’m sure there are many gigs to be confirmed but as well as the Last Laugh Comedy Club returning to Sheffield City Hall, you can look forward to the likes of Stewart Lee (20 June) and Mrs Brown’s Boys (6-7 July) performing there in the summer. Hopefully, there’ll be much more to follow. You can also catch Jack Dee at Buxton Opera House (14 May TBC). “In these difficult and uncertain times people need hope – a ray of sunshine to brighten their day. And that’s very much where I come in” says Jack. Across at Chesterfield's Winding Wheel you can see Jason Manford (28 August).
Arts & Culture Museums, galleries and exhibition centres will be welcoming visitors once again and will need your support. Yorkshire Wildlife Park remains a hugely popular visitor attraction and will be hosting Sunset Safari nights every Friday and Saturday from 30 July to 28 August, plus Bank Holiday Sunday, 29 August. Sunset Safari is exactly what you would think it would be - an evening stroll through the park, where you can see the amazing animals settle down for the end of the day. See the amazing polar bears take an evening swim in one of their lakes, watch the sun set behind the majestic lions or see the anteaters wake up from their daily slumber as the sun goes down. These evenings really will offer you a unique experience to see the animals in a different light.

Further afield Chesterfield's Winding Wheel and Pomegranate Theatre are taking a positive stance and have shows lined up for summer, including Zog (23-24 June), The Haunting of Blaine Manor (9-10 July) and Beyond the Barricade (17 July). Buxton Opera House will be showing Crooners (29 August), a rip-roaring new comedy music show that has been wowing audiences, witty and exhilarating it is full of hilarious one liners, laugh out loud silliness and superb musical numbers with the outstanding nine-piece The Mini Big Band live on stage. pounding music, breathtaking emotion and sensationally sexy dancing. Racing is back up and running at Doncaster Racecourse with Derby Raceday planned for 5 June. Alongside all the exciting flat racing on Town Moor, you will be able to watch the world-famous Classic and the first leg of the coveted Triple Crown - the Epsom Derby - LIVE on the big screen! A subsequent race meeting will then take place on 31 July. Heading north up the M1, one festival definitely confirmed to be going ahead is Leeds Festival, which takes place over the weekend 27-29 August. The Piece Hall in Halifax have also confirmed their summer musical roster which will see the likes of Shed Seven (28 August), The Specials (29 August), Cribs (3 September), Richard Hawley (4 September), Manic Street Preachers (10 September) and Kaiser Chiefs (11 September) all perform over successive weekends at the striking location. If food is more your thing you’ll not want to miss the Great British Food Festival at Harewood (29-31 May) and the North Leeds Food Festival in Roundhay Park (7-8 August). Cinema Movie theatres are set to re-open, at the earliest, on 17 May and with many of last year’s blockbuster film releases put on hold, this summer should see a tidal wave of new movies hitting the big screen. Marvel’s first cinematic release for almost two years, Black Widow, should finally get it’s release on 9 July and will be followed by Shang Chi and the Ten Rings (3 September). Disney’s offerings come in the form of Cruella (28 May), a live action prequel to 101 Dalmatians, and Luca (18 June), a Disney-Pixar animated adventure set on the Italian Riviera that sees an unlikely but strong friendship grow between a human being and a sea monster disguised as a human. Whether that means entertaining in our gardens, heading out for a picnic or drinking and dining at one of our region’s splendid venues (now restrictions are easing) - the choice is yours. At home, once you’re all set up outside - tables, chairs, parasol, mood-enhancing music - you’ll need to decide what to eat and for that we have plenty of inspiration. If you’re preparing the food yourself, over the coming pages we have some tasty spring/summer recipe ideas, which can be made with delicious ingredients from local suppliers including S&J Pantry and Whites of Calver. Specialising in locally-produced, artisan and fairly-traded produce such as yoghurt, cheeses, preserves and drinks, you’ll find S&J Pantry in the Moor Market in Sheffield. The Greedy Greek Deli has been a part of Sharrow Vale Road for over 15 years and is perfect for a seasonal alfresco meal. Italian picnic sandwich Serves 4 Prepare 30 minutes, plus overnight refrigeration Ingredients • 1 loaf oval-shaped sourdough bread • 290g jar roasted peppers, drained • 1 medium red onion, thinly sliced • 2 balls mozzarella (250g), drained and sliced • 90g pack spicy Italian salami • 90g pack pepperoni slices • 100g wild rocket For the relish • 2 stalks celery, finely diced • 1 tbsp small capers • 4 pepperoncini (pickled peppers) or Peppadew, thinly sliced

• 1 tbsp red wine vinegar • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 2 tsp oregano Method 1. In a small bowl, mix together the relish ingredients and season with salt and pepper. 2. Slice the top 4cm off the top of the loaf. Scoop out most of the inside, leaving 4cm at the bottom. Layer the ingredients inside the loaf, starting with the roasted peppers, then halve the relish, the red onion, remaining relish, mozzarella, salami, pepperoni and rocket. Put the top back on and wrap very tightly in plastic wrap. 3. Put the loaf on a tray topped with another tray. Weigh it down with something heavy, such as a cast-iron frying pan. 4. To serve, unwrap and cut into slices.

Spicy cauliflower and bean tacos with pickled red onions Serves 4 Prepare 30 minutes Cook 25 minutes Ingredients • 1 small head cauliflower, cut into small florets • 3 tbsp vegetable oil • 4 tsp smoked paprika • 4 tsp ground cumin • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 2 cans borlotti beans, drained and rinsed • 1 tbsp honey • 3 tbsp cider vinegar For the pickled red onions • 150ml red wine vinegar • 1 tbsp salt • 1 tbsp caster sugar • 2 medium red onions, sliced into half moons To serve • Warm corn or flour tortillas • Fresh coriander • Sliced green chillies • Chipotle hot sauce Method 1. Preheat the oven to 220˚C, gas mark 7. To make the pickled red onions, heat the red wine vinegar in a small saucepan with 50ml water, the salt and sugar. Bring to the boil, then take off the heat. Add the onions and leave to cool to room temperature. 2. Put the cauliflower on a baking tray. Drizzle with 1 tbsp oil, sprinkle with 2 tsp each smoked paprika and cumin, and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 15-20 minutes until charred. Remove and set aside. 3. Meanwhile, in a large frying pan, heat the remaining 2 tbsp oil and the garlic. Sauté over a medium heat for 23 minutes until golden. Add the beans, remaining 2 tsp each smoked paprika and cumin, honey and cider vinegar; season with salt and pepper. Cook for another 5 minutes, then remove from heat. 4. When ready to eat, warm the tortillas and serve with bowls of the beans, pickled onions, coriander, chillies and hot sauce for people to help themselves. Tomato tart with feta Serves 4 Prepare 30 minutes Cook 35 minutes Ingredients • 300g cherry tomatoes, halved • 1 medium red onion, thickly sliced • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • 325g all-butter pre-rolled puff pastry • 150g cream cheese • 1 clove garlic, crushed • 2 egg yolks • 20g chives, finely chopped • 100g feta cheese, crumbled • 20g fresh basil Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180˚C, gas mark 4. Put the tomatoes and onion on a
baking tray, drizzle with the vinegar and olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 15 minutes, then remove. Turn the heat up to 210˚C, gas mark 7. 2. Unwrap the pastry and slice into 4 rectangles. Use a knife to lightly score a 2cm border on each piece. Put on a tray and freeze while you prepare the remaining ingredients. 3. In a small bowl, mix together the cream cheese, garlic, 1 egg yolk and 2 tbsp chives; season with salt and pepper. 4. Put the pastry on a baking tray and bake for 8 minutes. Remove and spread with the cream cheese mixture. Top with the tomatoes, onion and feta. Brush the outer edges with the remaining egg yolk. Bake for another 10 minutes, then remove. For this, any erring Brits can be partly forgiven. After all, they inhabit a country not normally thought of as ideal for open-air dining. But when the sun shines, there’s no better way to enjoy your garden than to quite literally eat out, in the fresh air in the style of the Italian family. So at the first sight of the clouds breaking it’s all hands to the garden furniture, which only needs a quick dust-off after eight months in the garage, before you’re all set to go. Now all that remains is to deck the table with an appropriate open-air Italian banquet. To help you do exactly that, there can be few better-placed than Gian Bohan.

The amiable Mr Bohan certainly knows a thing or two about Italian cookery, about which he has written a sell-out book as well as being the recipient of numerous awards and veteran of media appearances. But it’s as the joint founder of legendary Sheffield restaurant Nonnas that he’ll be best known. Four decades after Nonnas shook the dining-out scene with a concept and a cuisine that combined authenticity with pure style, he is no longer involved with the restaurant, but can call on many years of experience in all matters Italian food. His latest venture may look modest from the outside, but watch this space. There is talk of a 32-seat restaurant on the site. Ambitious enough perhaps, but he has already stumbled on a source of
truly astonishing and unexpected success in the shape of a Sicilian tradition that we apparently can’t get enough of. Of that, more later. But for now here’s a clue. It has been selling like... you might say, hot cakes. He now finds himself hands-on again working alongside his small team, Italian to a man/woman, in the Northtown Deli on Abbeydale Road, Sheffield. His aim is to recreate the kind of street food that might be found in the backstreets of Naples. So it was that, along with business partner Pasquale Pollio, a research trip beckoned. The duo soon discovered the wealth and variety of the city’s street food. ”People obviously think of pizza when they think about street food, but there is so much more. The great thing about Naples is that there is a kind of raw energy about the place. Those who haven’t been there are full of trepidation about whether they are going to be mugged at every street corner. It’s true, It can look very urban and scary, but the people are absolutely lovely. And it is the home of street food. “At every turn walking around the town, the street food is there, whether it be pizza slice, Paracini – a kind of tart

unique to Naples, or so many other things. It’s all super tasty and super good value.We tried a place famous for its deep-fried pizza.They only do two types of pizza and the queue outside stretches out of the door and around the block. Next door is a little hole in the wall from where wine is sold, usually the locallyproduced stuff, which you can get for a couple of euros a glass.You stand in the street sipping your wine while waiting for your food to arrive. It’s something you have to experience and it is something we wanted to bring back to Abbeydale Road. “Northtown might look a little rough and ready, but the food is another matter. And it’s that energy, the thrill of finding superb food in a hidden gem, that we seek to create.” Gian and Pasquale serendipitously set up their takeaway/deli around the time that Covid-19 struck, so they were ideally placed to deal with the increased demand for takeaways which sprang up under the restrictions. Queues are now commonplace around the hatch through which Northtown products are handed to eager clients. The range spans fresh pasta dishes to desserts and several varieties of bread baked on the premises, plus what informed sources say is the best pizza in Sheffield. But what nobody saw coming was the really big success story that we mentioned earlier. The humble cannoli is a sweet Sicilian combination of a fresh pasta pastry wrapped around a sweet filling such as cherries in sweet ricotta cream, chocolate sauce or pistachios and cream. Because the pastry is deep-fried, it delivers a scrumptious crunchy bite as you work your way down to the creamy centre. They’re not particularly well-known in the UK. Not yet anyway. The media, which is slowly cottoning on to the cannoli, could until recently only muster one memorable mention, and that was a short scene in The Godfather. It’s the bit where the hitman casually reminds his associate not to forget the cannoli after the deadly work is done. Gian says he has never known a ‘new’ product show such a meteoric surge in popularity. He started out a few months ago selling 20 a week. Now sales have risen to 1,000 a week. We’re clearly entering the golden age of the cannoli. Just remember, you read it here first.
Burrata E Caponata Buy your Burrata as fresh as possible from your favourite Italian Deli. For the Caponata: 1 Aubergine 2 Red peppers Small jar of Tomato passata A handful of sultanas Chilli flakes 4 tbsp Red wine vinegar 2 tbsp Brown sugar A sprig of Mint 2 cloves of garlic Glug of olive oil Chop the aubergine into cubes and fry with olive oil and chopped garlic until brown and softened. Roast peppers whole in oven till charred and blackened. Allow to cool, peel, deseed and chop into slivers. Add to pan of softened aubergine. Stir in passata, and pour in half a cup of water. Add two tablespoons of brown sugar and the sultanas. Cook over moderate heat for 20 mins, stirring occasionally. Pour in red wine vinegar and a sprinkle of chilli flakes. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for another 5 mins. Allow to cool. Check seasoning, finish with chopped mint. Serve slightly warm.
Northtown lamb meatballs 300g lamb mince 1 preserved lemon 20 sultanas soaked in warm water overnight in balsamic vinegar 10 mint leaves 50g ground almonds Chilli flakes Put lamb mince in large mixing bowl. Chop the preserved lemon, mint and soaked sultanas and mix in well with the meat. Add ground almonds, chilli and seasoning to your liking. Give it a good mix with your hands. Then shape your meatballs, golf ball size (Approx 35g each) and transfer to a floured tray. Refrigerate for an hour. Fry in shallow vegetable oil (the oil need to be hot enough to get a slight crisp on the outside but don’t cook too quickly as this could leave them raw in the centre). This should take approx. 5-7 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon into a baking dish. Smother with passata, top with tallegio cheese. Pop under the grill until the cheese has melted and the sauce is bubbling.
For the burrata: Allow to get to room temperature. Split open, add a dash of good olive oil, sprinkle with rock salt and add pistachio crumbs if desired.

OVO Spaces brings 21st century luxury to historic Peaks hotel Sheffield commercial interior design and fit-out specialist OVO Spaces has completed work on a major refurbishment to the facilities at the historic Maynard Hotel in Grindleford. The famous Peak District hotel and wedding venue, situated in the picturesque Hope Valley close to Chatsworth, was taken over in January 2020 by hotelier Rob Hattersley, of Longbow Bars and Restaurants. Since then the venue has undergone significant refurbishment, working through the COVID-19 pandemic to bring the hotel up to the standard required by a 21st century clientele. Working closely with the OVO’s design team, a complete floor of the former staff quarters were earmarked for conversion and the design process began. “Rob is an experienced operator with a history based in national and international venues,” said OVO Managing Director David Baldwin. “Due to ever increasing demand, his hotel required a minimum of eight new double bedrooms to transform the luxury boutique hotel into a 20 double/twin bed business model. “Commercial offices of all shapes and sizes are our mainstay - however, hotels have the same issues of compliance regarding fire safety, acoustics, ventilation, cooling/heating, drainage and life support systems. “What hotels do need are enhanced comfort levels and a different pallet of finishes but apart from this, offices and hotels have many aspects of construction in common.’’ “We worked closely with Longbow and their team at the Maynard Hotel on this exciting local project, which marked a major and exciting departure for everybody at OVO Spaces.” Much of the work centred on the conversion to one of the two staff accommodation floors, which the owner recognised as available for revamp, so increasing guest comfort and quality of the bedroom suites. “Once the corridors, stairs and necessary service areas were taken into consideration, the area left for the eight new suites represented a space planning challenge,” said David. “There have been some innovative design solutions and careful consideration for the integration of new mechanical and electrical services within the area whilst maintaining the day to day operation of the hotel.” Based at Sheffield’s historic Victoria Quays, OVO Spaces is an award winning, one stop design and fit out specialist on projects for a wide range of leading companies, providing concept to conclusion building transformations for customers in the commercial, industrial, retail and public sectors.

CMS chose Support Dogs to be its charity of the year in 2020 but due to the impact of the Covid pandemic, the firm has extended its partnership into 2021. The perils of facing a future with no financial safety net More than 30 per cent of businesses are emerging from lockdown with no more than three months of cash reserves to support them into the future. Latest figures from the Office of National Statistics suggest that some of those companies are in fact now running on empty, with no financial cushion at all. Particularly badly affected are the hospitality, accommodation and beauty sectors. Deborah Lockwood, director of Sheffield insolvency and recovery practice Graywoods, says directors facing such a financial shortfall need to take the time now to reassess and prepare their business model and operations for a post-Covid World. “The percentage of businesses with just three months’ cash reserves or less has remained at 31 per cent from January to early March but this is a figure that has been slowly increasing since last autumn,” she said. “Everybody’s attention at the moment is on the road map to recovery and the prospect of light at the end of the Covid tunnel but the reality is that a company with very little to fall back on is going to find the coming months extremely challenging. “Particularly badly affected are hairdressing and beauty businesses and, almost inevitably, the accommodation and food services sector, where more than half of those questioned say they have been running with just a three month reserve or even less since December. “What these statistics show is that for many businesses, cash is now slowly starting to run out, possibly as a result of the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) and Bounce Back loans now coming to an end.” Restrictions on issuing Statutory Demands and Winding up Petitions are due to be lifted on 31 March 2021 and by 30 April 2021 suspension of liability for wrongful trading will no longer apply - extra burdens for already struggling companies. Deborah said that businesses emerging from lockdown restrictions would now need money to accommodate payment of arrears and working capital to fund normal trading - both issues that would wipe out small reserves. “Working capital has mainly come from government support over the last year but this is now ending and people need to think of how they will fund their operations going forward,” she said. There has been much speculation about what the terms of the divorce would be, and Adele has worked to keep the details private.Very little is known about the split as a judge granted a privacy request and has reportedly insisted that anyone given access to the details signs a confidentiality agreement. It is known that joint physical and legal custody of their eight-year-old son has been agreed and neither of them will pay maintenance. Adele married and filed for divorce in Los Angeles, and it’s understood that there was no prenuptial agreement. According to the law in California, she married in ‘community of property’, meaning that all assets acquired during the marriage (apart from by gift or inheritance) should be split 50/50 upon divorce. Adele has amassed a £140million fortune during her career much of it during her marriage. There is a lot to sort out regarding finances and it’s understood that this will be done through mediation. Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution - known as ADR. It’s an alternative to the court process and can be a very useful resource in resolving disputes arising out of a separation, be that in relation to children, finances, divorce, contents or even pets. You can have legal advice with any form of ADR which allows you to make informed choices throughout. By using mediation, Adele has managed to avoid the usual mud-slinging that comes with a celebrity divorce court

case and protected her son from adverse publicity. Bradie Pell, partner and head of the family team at Graysons says: “It’s good to see a high-profile couple using mediation to help with their divorce. It’s often assumed that the super-rich can’t use mediation, but that isn’t true. It worked for Tom Cruise, who used mediation in three divorces – about which we know very little, and Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner used mediation to look after the best interests of their child. ADR, such as mediation, is often considered the best route if you want to remain amicable and keep some control of your negotiations and what you want to discuss.You set the agenda: at court, it’s in the hands of a judge.” Graysons can discuss all forms of ADR so you can decide what is best for your situation. Mediation is still the most common form of ADR. In the UK, it’s now a requirement, in most circumstances, to attend mediation before issuing a court application for either a financial dispute or children matters. Graysons can refer you to a mediator, or you can self-refer. Both parties will be invited to mediation information and assessment meetings (MIAMs), which are usually held separately and in which the mediator will advise whether the case is suitable for mediation. If you initiate the referral and your spouse/partner is not willing to attend a MIAM, you should still attend, as, despite their non-cooperation, you

cannot proceed with a court application until you have done so.You’ll then receive a document from the mediator to confirm you have attempted mediation and you can make a court application if needed. Conversely, for the same reason, if your spouse/partner initiated the referral and you do not want to attend the MIAM, your spouse/partner will have to go and they will then receive the paperwork to start a court application if. You can still access mediation during COVID-19 measures as mediators are currently running video sessions remotely – for example by Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Mediators cannot give legal advice, but you can obtain independent advice alongside mediation. A mediator can give you a mediation summary which you can bring to a solicitor here at Graysons and we can discuss your options based on the information given, point you in the right direction for your individual circumstances and provide a legally binding document should you require it.
