Factory Direct Designer Kitchens at UNBEATABLE PRICES Any size, style or colour of your choice
“Lovely family firm, all the staff both in the office (especially Lauren), and the workmen that did the work were easy to deal with and dealt with queries quickly. Leah designed a lovely kitchen and utility with everything we wanted and nothing we did not want. She made some suggestions we had not thought of and it looks great and is very much user friendly.” ~ Dee Cavanagh S17 “Excellent service, excellent staff and AMAZING kitchen! My husband and I are so chuffed with our new kitchen/diner. We had 2 walls knocked through, a new wall and door built and a new kitchen installed. We could not be happier with the whole process from start to finish. Everyone at DKD are professional, helpful and genuinely seemed to care about giving us the best results.” ~ Francesca Makey S11

What is conveyancing? BUYING YOUR FIRST PROPERTY CAN BE AN OVERWHELMING EXPERIENCE WITHOUT THE HELP OF AN EXPERIENCED PROPERTY LAWYER TO GUIDE YOU THROUGH THE CONVEYANCING PROCESS – BUT WHAT EXACTLY IS CONVEYANCING? onveyancing is the legal trransfer of a property from one owner to another. The process involves a conveyaancing solicitor or licensed conveyancer who acts on behalf of th he buyer to ensure th heir client receives the title deeds to the property and the land it sits on. Conveyaancing encapsulates the entirety of the legal and administrrative work required to ensure a house purchase is valid under law.
C
other party. This can potentially increase the r isk of gazumping if you are part of a lengthy moving chain. • Upon the exchange of contrracts the buyer and seller are both legally committed to the purchase and th he agreed ter ms of th he sale. If you decide to pull out of th he agreement at this stage you may automatically lose the deposit you paid upon exchange.
Standard conveyancing practice
What w wiill your conveyancer do for you?
Sooner or later you will hear your conveyancer or mortgage lender refer r ing to “exchange of contrracts”. The exchange of signed contracts between the buyer and the seller – car r ied our via each party’s conveyancer – is what legally commits both parties to the sale of th he property. • A house purchase is not legally binding until contracts are exchanged between the buyer and the seller – this gives freedom to both parties pr ior to the exchange of contrracts. A deposit is required at th he exchange of contracts. • In th he phase pr ior to exchanging contracts either party can cancel the transaction, with no obligatiions to the
Strr ictly speaking it is possible to deal with your own conveyaancing. However, it is a detailed and somewhat complicated legal process, and it is recommended that you always use a qualiffiied and exper ienced property solicitor. Your conveyancer will: • Liaise with the seller’s solicitor to receive a contract pack • Request and obtain a copy of your mortgage offer • Car ry out the necessary local author ity searches in relation to the property • Analyse the results of the local author ity searches • Ar range potential completiion dates with both partiies

• Swap signed contracts with the seller’s own conveyaancer • Transfer the deposit to the seller’s conveyaancer • Prepare the completion statement and transfer deeds for you to complete • Transfer the signed transfer deeds to the seller’s conveyancer • Request payment of the mortgage advance from your lender • Transfer the balance of the purchase pr ice (less the deposit already paid) to the seller’s conveyancer • Submit a tax retur n and pay the required Stamp Duty Land Tax to HM Revenue & Customs • Forward documentation regarding the transfer of ownership to the Land Registrry • Forward the title deeds to yo our mortgage lender While your conveyancer will do the major ity of th he legwork, you will also have responsibilities dur ing the conveyancing process. PROPERTY P ROPERTY
Conveyancing checklist for buyers he legal process of buying a property doesn’t have to be complicated - just follow these simple steps! Even though you’re choosing a conveyancing solicitor to take care of buying your property, you’ll still want to be an active part of the process. That way you’ll know exactly where you stand, how long things are taking and what tasks are next on the list. To make sure nothing gets forgotten, read through our ‘buying a house checklist’ below.
T
1. Check the reviews when choosing a conveyancer Choosing a solicitor can feel a little overwhelming - especially if you’re a first time buyer who has never had to do it before. Make sure you take the time to compare the costs, whether they include things like ‘disbursements’ and extras, and always look at reviews. You look at them for everything else, so it’s especially important to take the time when it comes to something as important as buying a property. 2. Always read the small print Before entering into an agreement with a property lawyer, always read the contract fully and ask the conveyancer to clarify any terms you don’t understand. They are working on your behalf and should be happy to help explain any complex terminology.
them to check the legal implications and make sure the deal is in your best interest. It also means that conditions the seller agreed to won’t be forgotten along the way. 6. Be aware of the property searches Part of your conveyancing solicitor’s job involves organising searches with the Land Registry. These searches assess the local area, history of the property and a variety of other factors. 7. Restrictions and contracts that may affe ect the property Make sure your conveyancer gives you copies of any restrictions or contracts that affect the property on the land. Buying with the aim to extend the kitchen and then realising you can’t may find you stuck with a property that doesn’t fit your future needs. Similarly, if you’re buying a leasehold property, be sure that you’ve been told what the extra charges are, when and how they might increase and what limitations there are to what you can do to the property. Often with leaseholds, significant structural work is not allowed. 8. Be aware of shared upkeep areas Some properties include
agreements between neighbours regarding the upkeep of shared driveways and communal greens. It’s important that you know about (and agree to) these responsibilities to avoid any issues down the line. 9. Check your mortgage deed If you’re getting a mortgage to buy your property, you should have received a completed mortgage deed which gives your lender the interest in the property. As the borrower, you will pledge your new property as security against the mortgage. 10. Exchanging contracts and completion When you’ve got your mortgage offer and are happy with the report from the surveyor (carried out to make sure the property is in good condition), you’ll be presented with the contract. At the point of exchange (where you sign the contract) you’ll agree on the completion date – the date and time when the property legally becomes yours and you can move in. It’s important to note that if you decide to pull out of the move after exchanging contracts you will are likely to lose your deposit.
3. Make your moving deadline clear Let your solicitor know when you’re aiming to move. They’ll keep this in mind and let you know if it looks like complications might make it unlikely. Often the process can take longer than expected - it’s good to be on the same page. 4. Ask for an outline of the conveyancing process This will include the areas you will be required to be responsible for at various stages of the purchase. You’ll be able to be prepared with the right documents, and you’ll keep everything moving quickly. 5. Tell your solicitor about any agreements with the seller If you’ve already made agreements with the seller (these could be things like the asking price, or including the fixtures and fittings in the purchase) keep your conveyancer fully informed. Keeping up wiith demand w MATT STAVES, OF STAVES ESTATE AGENTS, COMMENTS ON A ‘RED-HOT’ PROPERTY MARKET. he postcodes of S17, S11 and S7 are seeing unprecedented demand for property, not just from those already living within the area but those ffrrom further affiield too who would like to call this south-west cor ner of Shefffiield ‘home’. It’s a trend that accelerated last year and shows no sign of slowing down anytiime soon, despite the recent r ise in interest rates. “We have scores of buyers waiting for properties, whether that’s apartments, three-bed semis or four/ffiive-bedroom detached homes,” said Matt Staves, managing director of Staves Estate Agents, a family-run independent business. “On average we are getting ten different buyers per property. “Our extensive mailing list is growing by the day and we’re matching properties to buyers on a daily basis. Recent research by Rightmove has shown that we are selling more houses in S17 than any other agent in th he area.” Matt puts the success of the estate agency down to his team’s local knowledge and bespoke service. Staves opened on Bushey Wood Road in August 2020 which puts th hem at the heart of one of the most sought after areas in the city. With great schools, amenities and frequent transport links to the centre, as well as close proximity to th he Peak Distrr ict, it’s easy to see why these postcodes are such a draw for buyers. “We pr ide ourselves on our local knowledge along with our hands-on
T
proactive approach towards selling and lettiing property, which we feel gives us a competitive edge,” added Matt, who grew up in the Dore and Totley area and now takes his children to the same schools he once attended. ”We’re exper iencing something of a perfect stor m at the minute,” explains Matt. “The vast number of people we have looking for property, particularly in the S17 area, unfortunately isn’t matched by the number of propertiies available. If you’re thinking of selling, please contact us. We offer free valuations and have buyers ready and waiting.” As well as having th he pr ivilege of successfully marketing and selling lots of beautiful properties so far dur ing 2022, Staves have also been instrructed by a number of clients on their ‘Get Ready Marketing’ Package where by all of the marketing of the property is undertaken including professional photography and the property particulars are prepared in readiness for when the vendor ffiinds a suitable property. This saves crucial time
in this fast paced and highly competiitive market and vastlly improves the chances of successfully secur ing a suitable property for our clients by being able to react quickly and competiitively when th he perfect property presents itself. Please call for further details. The Dore and Totley offfiice, just off Abbeydale Road South and next to Tesco Express, provides a full range of estate agency services. Offfiice manager Kate Boden has a wealth h of exper ience backed by local knowledge. They open six days a week and enjoy the beneffiit of three free parking spaces outside, which means dropping in has never been easier. Staves specialise in residential sales and lettings, as well as providing independent mortgage advice. Keeping things on track AS PART OF THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE, BELINDA TURNER MBE ENSURES THE HORSE TRIALS RUN LIKE CLOCKWORK – AND REMAIN A WORLD-CLASS SPECTACLE. WE SPOKE TO HER ABOUT THIS YEAR’S EVENT AND MORE. elinda Tur ner MBE grew up around horses so it was perhaps inevitable that she would follow in her moth her’s footsteps and continue the great work that Stubbing Court Training (SCT) does. SCT was one of the ffiirst gover nment-supported workplace trraining programmes when it started 40 years ago and provides a career structure for young people wanting to pursue careers in the equine industry. Many of their apprentices have gone on to have successful careers as professional r iders, travelling grooms, yard managers, instructors and even the King’s Troop and Household Cavalry. Belinda is also part of the organising committee for Chatsworth Horse Tr ials and has played a huge part in br inging the world class event back to the area after an enforced three-year layo off due to the Covid pandemic. She spoke to us about SCT and what we can expect at the Chatsworth Inter national Horse Tr ials this year.
B
What’s your background?
My grandmother and mother had always had horses and competed in eventing and showjumping. I was put on from six months old! The offfiice has always been at home so I’ve been around trraining since eight years old. I competed in Working Hunters and jumping, did English at th he University of Durham. Through r iding on the university team for Durham I then rode for the Br itish Universities team and competed in Nations Cups throughout Europe. I was Chair of the Br itish Universities Sports Association and organised the Br itish Universities Nations Cup, Br itish University Games and National Finals. I remember my mum competing at Chatsworth when I was eight and always went to the horse tr ials when it was organised by our good fr iend Hugo McGhee in the eightiies. Committee in 2003. The event was then organised by Mike Ether ington-Smith, one of the best organisers in the world. Through Mike, I helped with the European Championships, Badminton Horse Tr ials, and the Beijing Olympics in Hong Kong. You’re part of the organising committee for Chatsworth Horse Trials. How difficult has it been over the last two years?
The last two years have been very difffiicult due to the totally unpredictable times. The work for the horse tr ials goes on throughout th he year, for example th he groundwork, building cross country jumps, organising offfiicials and volunteers goes on all year. So much of th he work was done pr ior to th he ffiirst cancellatiion in 2020. We then prepared again for 2021 but unfortunately the restr ictions were then lifted on 17 May, and the event was due to run on 14-16 May, so again we had to cancel. In addition, many of our offfiicials are the leading professionals in the world so they get booked one to ttw wo years in advance. The horse tr ials also ffiits in to a world cycle of Europeans, World mpics, so Championships and Olym obviously the competitors’ planning and preparation for events for th he horses has been dramatically affected. Has anything changed this year, enforced or otherwise?
We have a lot of new volunteers and offfiicials this year which is great. We also have new apprentices taking the opportunity to volunteer which will be great for them. We have many new attractiions and even more for children. How will you be involved over the weekend?
Making the tea! Looking after everyo one involved in the Dressage section of the event, trying to make sure everyth hing stays on time, is in the r ight place at the r ight time, doing the r ight th hing! We have a huge ar my of judges, wr iters, scorers, stewards, runners, caterers, trade stands, doctors, vets, horses, r iders, grooms and spectators. What can visitors expect this year?
A great family day out! World class competiition. Many of the best r iders and horses in the world come to Chatsworth. We have eventtiing from Novice to 4* level. And the chance to see cross country in one of the most beautiful parks in the country, with cross country jumps beautifully built and designed by
one of the leading course designers in the world - Beijing and Tokyo Olympic course builder David Evans. The 4* level tracks are designed by four times Olym mpic silver medalist Ian Stark OBE. There’s also Arena Eventing, Pony Club Games and jumping, a fantastic Dog Show, Dog Agility, Burghley young Event Horse classes showcasing the best young horses, trade stands, Artisan Foods. And for children activitiies including: Circus Skills, climbing wall, face paintiing, Sheep Show, pottery paintiing.
understanding of the industry: th he individual needs and requirements of young people and employers to achieve their personal and business success; the demand for the highest standards and exceptiional quality of service; and the opportunities th hat will inspire, motivate and encourage excellence. We work with employeers in r iding schools, livery yards and competiition yards up to inter national level.
What’s your favourite part of the horse trials?
We offer Apprenti ticeships: the Level 2 Equine Groom and Level 3 Senior Equine Groom. We also offer the Level 1 Study programme in Work based Horse Care. All programmes last a minimum of 12 months, up to 18 months.
When it’s over and everything has gone well! That people have had the chance to watch, lear n and be involved in an event at world class level. And that we have hopefully provided a great exper ience for all th he horses for them to progress to their next event. I also lear n so much from all the team, work kiing with Olympic-level professionals and world class organisers is a huge pr ivilege and their meticulous attention to detail, commitment to the highest standards and enor mous effort is unique. Tell us about Stubbing Court Training (SCT).
Since 1982, SCT have been delighted and pr ivileged to work with some of the most successful professionals in th he world; many deter mined and talented young people; and a var iety of key organisations involved in promoting training and achievement through Gover nment-supported programmes. SCT has established itself as one of the leading providers in th he UK, conffiir med by the Ofsted report on the provision to be of ‘outstanding’ quality. We pr ide ourselves on our unique
How many diffe erent courses do you off ffe er?
What do they involve?
All programmes are workplace-based with an employeer in the horse industry. The programme is comprehensive, cover ing all aspects of horse care from health care, grooming, travelling, lungeing and specialist aspects such as organising competiitions, rehabilitatiion and grooming at inter national competiitions. At tth he end of th he Apprentiiceship there is the End Point Assessment.

he Dodson & Hor rell Chatsworth Inter national Horse Tr ials retur n for the ffiirst time in three yeears this month. Thousands of people are expected to converge on the 105-acre Chatsworth Estate, owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, for a weekend of equestr ian excellence. But whilst you may marvel at the majesty of the horses on display, spare a thought for those working hard behind the scenes to make sure the animals are in the best possible condition. One of the key roles in a horse’s welfare is the far r ier, who looks after all aspects of hoof care. A qualiffiied far r ier will have detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology of th he horse’s legs and hooves, combined with skilled metal working, allowing them to tr im and balance horse’s feet as well as make and ffiit shoes for each individual horse. A far r ier also deals with injured or diseased hooves and will often work to provide remedial care working closely with vets and other equine professionals. Stuart Shepherd grew up on a far m and always wanted to work with animals but wasn’t interested in the far ming aspect. Far r iery proved to be the perfect compromise. Here he tells us about far r iery, what it involves and the role it plays in a horse’s welfare.
T
What is a farrier?
A far r ier is a qualiffiied person who specialises in equine foot care. How did you become one?
Growing up on a farm I used to watch my famiilly’s farrier come to shoe th he horses. One day after I had helped sort out tth he horses ready for him to shoe, he offered to take me with him for some work experience. I have always enjoyed work kiing outside and I ffiind it very satisfying being able to care for the animals. Did you always want to be a farrier?
Yes and no! I knew I wanted to work with animals but I wasn’t interested in far ming. Far r iery was a good compromise. I could still work outside and with animals but it is very different to far ming. How long have you been in the job?
I have worked as a qualiffiied far r ier for 18 years but including my trraining I have been in th he trade for 24 years. What education or skills are needed to become a farrier?
“A qualified farrier wiill have detailed w knowledge of anatomy and physiolog gyy of the horse’s legs and hooves, combined wiith skilled metal w working.”
A minimum of ffiive GCSEs grades A-C (or moder n equivalent), three of which must be Science, Math hs and English. A four and a half year apprenticeship must then be completed, dur ing which both wr itten and practiical examinations are taken. Once qualiffiied you must practice under the rules and regulations of the Far r ier’s Registration Council. Is there a common misconception people have about what you do?
Yes, people think we ear n lots of money! We don’t! The biggest misconception I have found is that people don’t realise how much training is involved. Not just in how to physically make and ffiit shoes on a horse, but also the amount of studying involved to lear n and understand the anatomy and physiology of horses lower limbs.

To properly look after a horse’s feet you must understand how they work and the causes and treatments for many different complaints. What’s the best part of your job?
Helpiin ng a lame horse to become sound again. It is very rewardiin ng to assist a horse who is suffering to o become paiin n ffrree again. Anything you dislike?
Shoeing in the rain! What’s the most challenging thing?
It is very physically demanding. Horses are big and some lean on yo ou while yo ou are working, oth thers pull and just picking up their feet can sometiimes be challenging especially if the horse is new to being shod. How many horses do you work on in a week?
It var ies but on average 16-20 per week. 64 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Do you work mainly locally?
Yes, I cover most of Shefffiield and parts of th he Peak Distrr ict. What’s been a career highlight for you?
I am lucky to have great customers, some of whom I have worked with since the beginning of my career. Working with people who share my passion for equine care makes my job enjoyable. I have built great relatiionships with h both my customers and the horses over the years. In partiicular, working with a horse recover ing from a ser ious accident was a career highlight, lots of time and different techniques ensured that a horse that was unlikely to have much of a future was able to get back into work and be back to being health hy and happy. Have you worked on any racehorses?
Yes, but I only used to do amateur racehorses (point to point).
How do you deal with high pressure situations?
Calmly and methodically. Animals pick up on stress and anxiety so it is important to stay relaxed. What advice would you give someone looking to do this job?
Find a far r ier to g ive yo you some work exper ience. It is best to choose an approved training far r ier (ATF) as whilst any far r ier can give yo ou work exper ience, only an ATF can offer apprenticeships. Before you decide to do this job and undertake the training you need to be sure it is what you want to do. It is not just a job, it’s more like a way of life and it is very physically demanding!

reviously a fashion designer specialising in knitwear, Claire Simpson has had an exciting career in the fashion industrry, leading her to 15 years and counting in millinery. From styling and designing for music videos to having her fascinator wor n in front of the Queen, Claire has done it all. Excited to dedicate the rest of her life to millinery, with her two businesses and exceptional hats and fascinators, Claire speaks with h to us about her talented work.
P
How long have you been in the fashion industry?
I did a degree in fashion design and th hen became a fashion designer specialising pr imar ily in knitwear. I also previously worked for a stylist to design for music videos and TV commercials. Then, when I met my now husband who is bor n and bred in Shefffiield, I moved up north h from London. Although I wanted to continue with my fashion background, I couldn’t be a fashion designer in the capacity I wanted to, so I re-trained as a milliner. Now it’s been a good 15 yeears in millinery.
What inspired you to have a fashion career?
Explain more about what products you make.
Fashion is something I’ve always wanted to do, I remember being ten years old, many moons ago, and th here was a show called The Clothes Show, I just loved it. As a child I would always be creatiing, like in the 80s and 90s, when it was ffiirst fashionable, I would cut up my mum’s clothes (sometimes she wouldn’t even know) and I would make scrunchies and sell them to my fr iends at school! Fashion, styling and shopping has always something that’s interested me from being a young girl.
I have ttw wo sides to the business, the ffiirst: Champagne and Muddy Boots, is for traditiional wool ffeedoras and summer/straw fedoras which are machine blocked by hand and ffiinished off (trr im etc) by hand. The hats are ready to wear and come in small, medium and large. It’s quite ‘countrry’, where I live, a lot of ladies buy hats for the Cheltenham Races, Chatsworth h Horse Tr ials and Chatsworth Country Fair, matched with ttw weed blazers for the country look. Where as the other side to the business, Claire Simpson Millinery (C.S.M), is more couture, Ascot, weddings etc; the hats are much more traditiional and predominantly one-off. With C.S.M. I’ve just started th his year making scarves out of couture fabr ics, Gucci for example.
What made you pick hats over any other clothing?
At the time it was becoming quite a trend and there was a new niche market for hats and fascinators. I remember when Victor ia and David Beckham visited Buckingham Palace for his OBE and she styled a beautiful one. It also became fashionable to wear the pillbox hats and fascinators, so I saw a gap in th he fashion market that I could pursue from my home in Derbyshire.
Hat making process (left) and a finished creation by Claire Simpson
Have you made a most memorable piece?
A few years ago I had a lady who bought one of my hats to wear at a he horse show and it was in front of th Queen! Un nfortunately, her horse didn’t come ffiirst so there was no photograph,

b q t watched her beautiful horse and beautiful hat. My favour ite person to have made for was actually Julia Bradbury, from Countryffiile, who’s from Shefffiield or iginally. A few years ago she was th he face for Chatsworth Countrry Fair so she bought a bespoke fedora that I made for her and also a ready-to-wear Champagne and Muddy Boots hat. I have a photo of her wear ing it next to the Duke! She was probably one of my favour ite people to work for, she was so lovely and wore it really well, she looked fantastiic. Who else have you worked with?
Locally, Kelly Clarke, a Shefffiield-based fashion designer, created made-tomeasure bespoke pieces and we’ve done fashion shows together; she’s also made
ng that I’ve styled with my hats. Haggas is a ffiine artist who started nting her work on beautiful silk carves and this year I collaborated to stock the scarf and use them on my hats, it was great to br ing th hose different elements together. hat is the typical making process?
The bespoke Claire Simpson Millinery items are all handmade using traditional wooden hat blocks. I pull and stretch th he mater ial over th he block and hand stiitch it, it’s much more tiime consuming making them couture. It can take me anything between a couple of days for a small piece th hrough to bigger more technical pieces that take two weeks to over a month, it all depends on size and intrr icacy. What inspires your hat designs?
It sounds really random but it can be anything, I will be walking around a super market or watching a ffiilm and an idea just pops into my head. Sometiimes I might just be playing with h th he fabr ic and twisting things until I th tw hink ‘oh I like

that’. When I’m making a hat to a particular outffiit, the outfffiit can sometimes inspire the hat. If the outffiits very loud and colourful, you don’t want a huge hat th hat’s also got lot going on; on the ffllip side if you have a classic tailored knee-length h dress you can get away with something more ffllamboyant on your head. Because I live in the countrryside I get a lot on inspiration from my sur roundings, especially for the fedoras I make. In the garden we have had for a couple years now, a resident pheasant who ffiights off the other pheasants and leaves feathers behind. I collect those, alongside the beautiful landscapes around me which often inspire colour combinations. Will you continue millinery?
Yes! I love millinery and love anything to do with h fashion. I also appreciate that I can work from the countryside and don’t have to be running around in a fashion house in London or New York; I get a peaceful family life but also fulffiil my passion for fashion. Oh god that sounds really cor ny!

Nice and precise PA JEWELLERY’S COMPACT LASER UNIT CERTAINLY PACKS A PUNCH TO ACCURATELY ENHANCE DELICATE JEWELLERY PIECES. t PA Jewellery our goldsmithing is pr imar ily car r ied out using very traditional techniques, with blowtorches, ffiiles, and hammers. However, every now and then we need a more moder n edge, and that’s where the laser welder comes in. If we have a job that requires ultraprecision then our little welding unit is very helpful. It has a highly magniffiied eyepiece which allows us to see every tiny detail and reach spaces that we couldn’t nor mally. The main reason that we got our laser welder was to allow us to complete repairs that would not withstand being exposed to the heat of our blowtorches, for example working next to delicate stones (like the emerald pictured), or working on hollow items where the metal is very thin and might be at r isk of meltiing. There are more beneffiits than we initially considered though, from welding base/non-precious metals to ffiilling in
A

engravings. It’s a wonderful piece of kit! So, what is it? And what does it do? Laser is actually an acronym and stands for ‘light ampliffiication by th he stimulated emission of radiation’ (one to remember for your next tr ivia night!), and what th he laser in our machine does is very accurately melt a tiiny spot of metal, causing it to displace and join to whatever is next to it. We can also use laser wire (very ffiine wire) to add mater ial where needed or strrengthen a join. You can think of laser welding as a bit like stitching. Traditional solder ing bonds ttw wo pieces togeth her by entirely ffiilling the space between th hem, like glue, whereas laser-welding bonds pieces in a slightly more surface-level way, like stitching around all the sides of an object. This means that laser-welding is ideal for small joins on ffiine objects, but less suited to large joins such as resizing a chunky r ing. Occasionally when we’re doing very
ffiiddly work with multiiple tiiny pieces we wish that we could just hold them in the r ight position with th our hands - with our welding unit our wishes have come true! A few quick zaps and the bits are all stayiing perfectly where they should be, then we can per manently solder them in place (what a gamechanger!). If you come to PA Jewellery for a repair, most of the tiime we will use traditional techniques, but we will always do what is best for your jewellery so sometimes we will decide that a laser repair is most suitable. Hopefully you will now have a better understanding of what is involved in that case. Should you have any questions, feel free to comment on our social media or drop in for a chat, we’d be happy to answer th hem. Animal Reiki Holistic Pet Care Sheffield ANIMAL ANXIETY & STRESS ISSUES Nature gave all animals the ability have senses that feel levels of energy that humans will never feel, the ancient Chinese understood this energy and described it as Qi as “life force energy”. Unfortunately animals do suffer from anxiety issues and stress related problems and issues, Reiki therapy is an alternative way to help animals not only on a physical level but also on a mental and emotional level, plus Reiki helps reduce discomfort and pain. Reiki is a non-invasive therapy and is ideal for all kinds of animals, from domestic pets to wildlife. Unlike humans, animals naturally feel “the life force energy” They willingly participate in Reiki therapy without any hindrance of doubt or fear because Reiki is gentle and non-invasive treatment, animals have no belief system blockages and very easily respond to Reiki therapy. Pet owners please reach out to me and let’s discuss how Reiki can help your pet, respectfully Martin David.

Who Are we? Hi I'm Vicky! Having worked in the Travel Industry for over 20 years (formally at World Choice Travel, Broomhill) I have teamed up with David and Richard and set up our own travel agency. These past two years or so has been tough for us all and now following the vaccine rollout we seem to be back to some sort of normality. We have some exciting news to share with you all!.... After previously been based at Kelham Island, a wonderful opportunity came up in our local community. In January 2022 we opened our new shop at Commonside, Crookes. Since opening on the 6th January it has been so nice to see customers old and new! The local businesses in the area have been very welcoming and local people walking past popping their head in the door to wish us well has made us feel at home. What's important to us? Here at The Travel Guyz our customers are our number one priority, Our travel experts are constantly monitoring the Entry, Testing and Passenger locator form requirements to ensure our customers have a hassle free holiday. What book with us? One question we get asked a lot is, why book with a travel agent when I can just book online? Here are the benefits of booking through a retail travel agency... • Supports local business and jobs. • ATOL protection is provided through our suppliers and we are fully financially bonded to the TTA, meaning your money is safe. • No call centre waiting. • Personal Service, meaning you will have an agent who will be with you throughout your booking. • We can access great deals and have the ability to try and price match. • We work with all the major tour operators, Cruise line partners & airlines. We hope to you you soon!

Pit stop in the Peak CHARLES BRADSHAW DISCOVERS SUMPTUOUS DELIGHTS IN DERBYSHIRE. afé 19 at White’s is located at Calver Cross Roads in the Peak Distr ict National Park, a pleasant half hour dr ive from Shefffiield. With plenty of tour ist attractions in close proximity, it’s an ideal start, ffiinish or stop-off point for walkers, cyclists, and visitors to th he area. Ar r iving late mor ning on a Spr ing weekday, my dining companion and I found there to be ample car parking he spaces located on-site. Stepping into th recently rebranded venue, we were treated to a heavenly aroma of freshly brewed ground coffee. This is a bespoke blend created for Café 19 by Shefffiieldbased company Roastology. The number of the café relates to the year 1919 when White’s business in Calver was or iginally established. A photographic collage ador ns the space behind the well-stocked counter, showcasing a potted history of the local family ffiir m. The inviting venue is fur nished with a mixture of soft upholstered seats, dining tables and chairs. An outdoor dining area is also provided for customers to enjoy refreshments al fresco.

My choice of beverage was a small Amer icano (£2.35) while my companion opted for English Breakfast Tea (£2.15) which ar r ived promptlly as we studied th he menu. A wide range of hot dr inks are on offer, alongside soft dr inks displayed on the counter area. The food menu included several breakfast options, hot and cold lunch dishes, fresh pastr ies and sandwiches; with many choices suitable for vegetar ian diners. I ordered a Toasted Hunters Chicken Panini (£7.95) with my companion choosing a hot Homemade Cheese and Onion Flan (£5.95). Both were accompanied with homemade coleslaw, side salad (cucumber, rocket and cher ry tomatoes) and cr isps. My lightly toasted Panini housed thick, succulent chicken pieces mar inated in BBQ sauce with h melted cheddar cheese. My companion’s quiche was a generous portion with short-crust pastry sur rounding a deliciously r ich creamy ffiilling and topped with sliced tomato. For dessert, we shared a hearty serving of Raspber ry and Almond Bakewell Slice (£3.15). A thick layer of raspber ry jam lay beneath a sumptuous almond-sponge
mixture, ffiinished with toasted almonds. There are numerous tempting choices available including mufffiins, blondies and slices of cake. In addition, a var iety of seasonal delights are on offer, alongside some vegan delicacies. All the desserts are supplied by Made by Ruth, a local artiisan baker who delivers the homemade confectiions daily. A steady stream of customers ffiilled the tables and plush seats dur ing our visit. Everyone received a war m welcome from th he counter staff coupled with prompt and professional service. Café 19 at White’s is a gem hidden in plain sight; a great place for a pit stop dur ing a day out in the Derbyshire countryside. A night to remember SAM PEGG INDULGES IN A UNIQUE EVENING OF SPORT AND DELIGHTFUL DINING. night at the Owlerton Greyhound Stadium is a night to remember. dining companion and I opted for the Cr isp Yorkshire Puddings with h apple and sage gravy. The Yorkshires were truly delicious, full of ffllavour and acted as the perfect sized portiion for a starter. The gravy was moreish and as a whole, the dish is clearly a favour ite th hroughout with the other diners. For our main course, I opted for the Shank of Lamb slowly braised with real ale and shallots plus herb roasted potatoes; my dining companion chose the Slow Roasted Pork Belly, caramelised onion mash, maple glazed pears and Henderson’s gravy. A platter of fresh vegetables and extrra roasted potatoes was served along with h our dishes and we couldn’t wait to indulge. My dish was exceptional, the standard of cooking was high and the ffllavours mar r ied together perfectly. Although we didn’t quite ffiinish th he extra vegetables and roasted potatoes, it beneffiited the dishes well. My dining companion was impressed by the quality of his dish and had a similar exper ience as me… in awe. On to the desserts, I chose the Chocolate Orange Brownie (accompanied by Chantiilly cream) and my companion went for the War m
Toffee and Banana Pudding, butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream. Both desserts were ffllavoursome and up to the same high standard of cooking. The evening as a whole was delightful, complete with photographs taken of our special exper ience, fr iendly staff and of course the enjoyment of the dogs racing next to you. There are other package options which include VIP boxes and ‘Six Pack’ which includes chicken strr ips and fr ies - from £6pp. I’d highly recommend the Panorama Restaurant with fantastic views and a moder n inter ior. With plenty of parking (£1), it’s easily accessible and practically next door to the Napoleons Casino. *Ter ms and conditiions apply. 18+ BeGambleAware Owlerton Greyhound Stadium Penistone Road, Sheffield, S6 2DE Tel: 0114 234 3074 www.owlertonstadium.co.uk

Italian delights CHIARA BRUNO DISCOVERS A TASTE OF ITALY ON ECCLESALL ROAD. ead down to Ecclesall Road and you might just spot a famous face. Reece Elliott, a MasterChef: The Professionals 2020 contestant, has settled into his new he kitchen of venture, heading up th Rafffiina by Reece Elliott. Think class. Think elegance. Think styylle. Rafffiina by Reece Elliott elegantly blends sophistiicated dishes with a relaxed and laidback atm mosphere. Only a few weeks into its relaunch, Elliott has succeeded in providing an exceptional service, providing an Italian inspired exper ience for his customers. Our evening began with a large glass of Malbec (£8.50) and a pint of the Alpine Italian lager, Menabrea (£6.50), for my partner. Whilst we were perusing the menu, which has the choice of opting for either two courses for £45 or three courses for £55, in true Italian style we wo slices of homemade were served ttw focaccia and a gorgeous quenelle of whipped salted butter. The focaccia was deliciously light and airy, reminiscent of the type you’d get served in the focaccia capital of the world - Puglia. Once we’d devoured the bread, we were treated to a taster of pastrami salmon en croute, which sat upon a bed of avocado puree, making it the perfect appetiser before our main meal. Just divine. To start, I chose the Pan-fr ied King
H

Scallops. The ‘nduja and parsley butter added a spicy twist, whilst the conffiit tomatoes and char red sweetcor n delivered an extra layer of texture, contrrasting beautifully with the melt-inthe-mouth scallops. My partner opted for the Smoked Beef Tartare. This round of glor iously raw beef was combined with anchovies, capers, toasted pine nuts and a salty touch of pecor ino cheese. Next up was the Pan-fr ied Cod Fillet, Reece’s signature dish. This was one of the best pieces of ffiish I’ve ever eaten, and I don’t say that lightly. The top was beautifully cr isp, whilst the cod itself was succulent and tender. The violet potatoes were exactly that – violet – and the Romanesco, leeks, squid ink cracker and the wonderfully unique bergamot flavoured sauce all complemented th fl he dish perfectly. It was a true showstopper. My partner chose a pork dish which offered not one but ttw wo cuts of pork; loin and belly. They were both magniffiicently moist, with the salsa verde providing a touch of luxury, enveloping the pork, cannellini beans and artichokes exquisitely. To br ing our meal to a close, we decided to break tradition and opt for both sweet and savoury. The cheese board platter came with a selection of three good sized cheese chunks: taleggio, smoked scamorza and a local Dovedale
blue. The homemade chutney created the perfect partnership for the cheese and crackers, with its sweetness cutting through their salty goodness. We then made a start on our ffiinal dish of th he night; the Salted Caramel Custard Tart. The tart’s texture was wonderfully smooth and made an excellent contrast to the crunch of its brown butter crumb. The Cappuccino Ice Cream had all th he r ight elements, capable of transporting me to a little caffè on the backstreets of a lazy Italian town. With a service that was second to none, a reffiined atmosphere and the highest quality of ingredients used to create moder n Italian ffllavours, it makes for a leading dining exper ience, and a little extra luxe th hat Shefffiield has been craving. I know for certain th hat I’ll deffiinitely be back. Raffina By Reece Elliott 837 Ecclesall Rd, Sheffield S11 8TH Tel: 0114 252 7777 www.ra affina.co.uk

A unique taste of USA RICHARD ABBEY TACKLES A MENU OF DELICIOUS MULTI-CULTURAL CUISINE. ith Spr ing in the air, it’ll not be long until you see the windows to The Wildcard Bar & Gr ill folded back to create a real indoor/outdoor atm mosphere that is just perfect for whiling away those hazy sunny evenings. Since opening just over 18 months ago, the Ecclesall Road sports bar has become a real destiination and served as a catalyst for other venues to open on th he busy strretch that reaches all the way up to Banner Cross. The Wildcard is billed as a ‘premium sports bar’ with a great dr inks offer ing and tasty food, it offers something for everyone, whether you’re out with fr iends, family or just want to catch a game on one of the many screens dotted around the inter ior. Whatever day you visit it always seems to be busy, not just weekends as you might expect, and the Tuesday of our recent ar r ival was no exception. plenty you may have not seen before. I selected a refreshing Corona (pint) whilst my wife took advantage of the dr inks offers, order ing a Wild Bramble cocktail (usually £9). I’ve been to The Wildcard a few times since it opened and am familiar with the food on offer, which is mainly Amer ican but with lots of Asian and Middle Easter n infflluences too. I’m no stranger to th heir burgers, which are very good by th he way, so thought I’d swerve th hese on this occasion and try some of their other dishes instead. We started with shar ing plates of Wildcard Wings (£9.50 for ten) and Pulled Pork Nachos (£6.50 + £1.25 supplement), which are real crowdpleasers with our family. My children devoured the major ity of th he Memphis Sticky BBQ Wings whilst my wife and I lapped up th he cr ispy nachos, which were served with sour cream and guacamole and topped with melted cheese, salsa, jalapenos and lots of lovely, tender pork. The pork theme continued into my main - the BBQ Pork Tr io (£18) was a real tr iumph, but not for th he fainthearted. A chargr illed pork cutlet, slowcooked St Louis cut r ib in BBQ sauce and panko fr ied pulled pork stuffed with h smoked applewood cheese was delicious with every element cooked to perfection.
A zingy pineapple salsa and sweet potato fr ies were th he perfect accompaniment. Across the table, my wife tucked into a lamb shish kebab (£24), which came with a crunchy rainbow salad, ffllatbread, mint and cucumber raita, pickled spicy chillies and a hot sauce – and ffrr ies. Despite numerous visits, I always seem to forget how generous th he portion sizes are which, disappointingly, left little room for dessert. he kids menu My children ate from th (£5.95) - cheeseburger for him, pizza for her - which they thoroughly enjoyed too. Not wanting to be spoil-sports, at least in the eyees of our children who were devour ing ice cream sundaes, my wife and I shared a portion of S’Mores (£6.50), an indulgent combination of chocolate chip cookies, toasted marshmallows and hot chocolate sauce. POLESTAR’S EVOLVING DESIGN LANGUAGE CAN BE ADAPTED TO DIFFERENT BODY STYLES, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
Sport and sustainability Polestar, th he pure play electr ic perfor mance car brand, has revealed a new concept car that redeffiines sports roadsters for the electrr ic age. Named Polestar O2, the hard-top convertible is Polestar’s vision of open-top perfor mance and a th hr illing dr iving exper ience – with all the beneffiits of electr ic mobility. The look of Polestar O2 shows how Polestar’s evolving design language can be adapted to different body styles with a strong family resemblance. The low and wide body with h an assertive stance, compact 2+2 cabin design, minimal overhangs and a long wheelbase, embody classic sports car proportiions but with a clearly moder n, electr ic feel. In Polestar O2, recycled polyester is the sole mater ial used for all the soft components of the inter ior: foam, adhesive, 3D knit ffiibres and non-woven lamination. This simpliffiies recycling and is a signiffiicant step towards greater circular ity, while also reducing weight and waste. Polestar sustainability teams believe that mater ials should be recycled, not downcycled. In Polestar O2, they have integrated a new method of controlling recycled content and improving circular ity of metal components. Different grades of aluminium are used throughout the chassis to help deliver a thr illing dr iving exper ience.
