elcome to the May edition of W Weestside.

Our attention turns to the Chatsworth International Horse Trials this month, which return to the Derbyshire estate from 17-19 May. Chatsworth will once again host the

British leg of the FEI Nations Cup which brings an international focus to the competition.

Elsewhere we look out how you can keep the family entertained in Derbyshire without breaking the bank, look out how you can spruce up your outdoor spaces, and speak to some ‘men in business’.

W We e also look at how you can be part of this year’s restaurant awards and have our usual mix of fashion, beauty, homes, motoring and more.

See you next month. Richard

coming before anything else including customer satisfaction and staff morale. I left my job, sold my house and started my own business where people and standards are always the forefront of the operation. In four years, we have transformed The Maynard in Arms, Bakewell into busy Peak District venues.

Asked about mentors, Rob said: “As cliché as it might sound, it is my Dad, John Hattersley. My parents owned a restaurant in Bakewell, called Aitch’s Wine Bar. That’s where I started in the industry and he taught me all of the basics. As a front man of a business, he held such presence, he knew every customer that walked through the front door, but also ran a tight ship, with high standards and great staff retention.”

And if he had any advice for other men in business?

“Vision is the most important thing to have,” Rob said. “Never compromise on it. Most importantly, get other people to buy in and share your goals. If you can get your people as passionate about your business as yourself, then you are on the way to success.”

“I think the biggest adaptation to our business and mentality is setting up for growth, allowing great people to take ownership of the venues while we strategise and look at potential new openings.”

Stephen is invested in the growth of Longbow and has some sage advice for those looking to progress.

Sorting out taxes when someone dies

Laura Cowan, head of Graysons’ private client team gives a brief overview of taxes to consider when administering an estate.

Following someone’s death, a personal representative (either an executor where there is a will or an administrator where there is no will) –must sort out the deceased’s estate. It can be a daunting job with substantial legal, administrative and tax duties. The personal representative can be personally liable if mistakes are made, and it is best to get help from a professional probate lawyer.

Sorting out taxes is an important part of carrying out the probate process and is an issue upon which our specialist estate administration lawyers regularly advise. Laura Cowan, head of Graysons’ private client team gives a brief overview of taxes to consider when administering an estate.

representative, you will need to make sure that the deceased has not paid too much or too little income tax over the current tax year. This can be complex, especially if the deceased had multiple sources of income, such as savings, rental property or dividends on shares.

If you have contacted HMRC via the Tell Us Once Bereavement Service, they will tell you what you need to do next. For instance, whether there are any rebates due or if there is any tax outstanding. If the deceased normally provided a self-assessment tax return, you may be required to provide one for the estate.

end of the tax year in which the person died. HMRC will usually pay any tax rebate to the estate. Income from savings, dividends or rental properties during the administration period (i.e. from the date of death to the distribution of assets) will need to be reported separately and will be taxed at the prevailing rates.

Inheritance tax (IHT) must be paid on all estates over the deceased’s nil rate band (NRB) of £325,000 and the residence nil rate band (RNRB) of £175,000 (where applicable). It must be paid within six months of a person’s death. If it is not, interest is charged at 7.75 per cent on late payments. This can cause issues when the estate is not completed within six months and a ‘grant of credit’ may be obtained from HMRC in exceptional circumstances. If you need help obtaining a grant of credit, ask our estate administration experts.

Capital gains tax (CGT) is payable

the difference between the value of the assets at death and their value at disposal – less any costs related to the sale of the assets. Everyone has an annual CGT-free allowance. This has reduced from £12,000 in 2019/2020 and will be £3,000 from

The current rate of CGT on chargeable capital gains is:

• Individuals – 10 per cent for lower rate taxpayers and 20 per cent for higher rate taxpayers (not including residential property).

• Individuals – 18 per cent for lower rate taxpayers and 28 per cent for higher property.

• Trustees or personal representatives of

someone who has died – 20 per cent (not including residential property).

• Trustees or personal representatives of someone who has died – 28 per cent for disposals of residential property.

property sold that belongs to the estate must be paid within 60 days from the date of completion.

sold, a trust and estate tax return must be completed.

Laura Cowan, head of Graysons’ private client team says: “Calculating and reporting taxes owed can be especially complex, particularly on higher-value estates or those where there are numerous sources of income.

“Changes to the CGT threshold will have liable for tax. It is always advisable to take professional advice to ensure that the gain is reported correctly. If you take advice before the asset is sold, there may also be ways to mitigate the gain.”

International FOCUS

Taking place from 17-19 May, the Chatsworth International Horse Trials will once again host the British leg of the FEI Nations Cup - but there’s much more to enjoy over the weekend.

There will be a worldwide focus on Chatsworth International Horse Trials this year as it will once again host the British leg of the FEI Nations Cup. This will be the second year running that the Derbyshire estate has hosted a leg of this competition, which is open to all nations around the world, consists of eight legs in total, and culminates in Boekelo in the Netherlands in October.

“We are thrilled to be asked once again to host the British leg of the National Cup and look forward to welcoming many international riders,” said event director Patricia Clifton.

The 2023 series attracted some of the world’s leading riders, including Ros Canter who had an outstanding score of 18 in the Dressage - CCI4*-S.

“This was real dressage, Izilot has really come into his own this season,” exclaimed Ros afterwards. “His ability is never in doubt – he’s a fantastic horse – but he is not straightforward at home and can be spooky. However, he has a good brain for the arena.”

French riders often fair well at Chatsworth and they were outstanding in the team competition, overhauling the British team with their superior cross-

country speed. Stephane Landois was the overall winner on the Saturday with a foot-perfect performance on the 11-year-old grey Selle Francais, Chaman Dumontceau.

David Doel, from Wiltshire, was the best British rider on Christine Lees’ quality mare, Ferro Point, and won the prize for

country time penalties.

“Chatsworth is one of my favourite places to come and very popular with owners,” said David. “It’s the premier CCI4*-S in the country and you know you’re going to get a good cross-country course. The ground conditions were testing, but at least one of us is little and lightweight – my mare scampered around easily.”

The Sunday saw young rider Lizzie Baugh score the biggest win of her career, scooping the CCI4*-S in the cross-country on her home-bred gelding, B Exclusive.

“I didn’t really mean to be so fast, as this was a prep run for Bramham,” she said at the time. “But I thought I must be positive and the horse seemed to pick up all the lines easily.”

Emma Thomas also won the prize for best under-25 rider and had the second fastest time aboard Rebecca Velarde’s Icarus X.

“He was a bit of a wild child, but he is ten now and loves his job,” said Emma. “I love it here at Chatsworth. It is so beautiful and is a proper, bold cross-country track.”

The Chatsworth International Horse Trials takes place over the weekend of 17-19 May and offers thrilling world class equestrian action, including dressage, show jumping and cross country. You can also see the starts of the future in the Dubarry

year-old classes.

Alongside the equestrian action there is plenty to keep families entertained, with a packed arena schedule that includes the Shetland Pony Grand National, Pony Club Mounted Games, falconry displays, and the The Dog and Duck Show. Children can try pottery painting and tackle a climbing wall, while family dogs can take part in the dog agility or a fun dog show.

You can also take a break from the action with a walk round the shopping village, featuring more than 100 brands offering equestrian essentials, homeware, clothing,

walk, with food and drink options for all tastes and appetites.

The house, garden, farmyard and playground will be open as usual during the horse trials.

Green with ENVY

When choosing emerald jewellery, there are several factors to consider, say PA Jewellery.

merald is amongst the most popular gemstones, and classically regarded as precious. It is the green variety of the mineral beryl, most famous for its strikingly bright colour.

EWhen choosing emerald jewellery, there are several factors to consider, which will have an impact on the price of the item. Selecting the right piece for you can is often a compromise between preferences and budget. So, what characteristics might you need to consider?

Shape

Shapes are typically selected that best show off the colour, although they should also pay heed to the physical properties of the gem. Emeralds are quite brittle and prone to fracturing if knocked. The most common cut for this gem is the emerald cut, ideal for showcasing colour and protecting the more delicate corners.

In modern jewellery, a wide variety of shapes are available, although special care should be taken with those that have sharper corners or points.

Colour

We have mentioned already that colour is

the principal factor for consideration when selecting an emerald. An even, intense green is usually regarded as the most desirable, with stones that are lighter or darker than this ‘optimum’ generally more affordable, all other factors being equal.

Clarity

Part of the reason that emeralds are brittle is that they are very prone to forming with to a variety of mineral inclusions (small crystals of other minerals) that are also commonly seen. This characteristic also generally diminishes the transparency of emeralds, which often have a less lively appearance than many other gems.

Treatments and Care

It is also important to be aware that, due to their propensity for fractures, emeralds are routinely treated with oil to improve their appearance. The presence of the oil in

helps to disguise them, making them harder to spot.

Filling treatments can deteriorate over time, and may be damaged by cleaning, so care does need to be taken. Ultrasonic

and steam cleaning are not suitable for emeralds, and neither are gold cleaning solutions/baths.

Location

Emeralds are found in a variety of countries around the world, and a range of qualities may be found in each locale. The most famous location for emeralds is Colombia,

The nominations for the 2024 Westside Restaurant &

fter three successful consecutive years, the Westside & Southside Bar & Restaurant Awards has settled comfortably into its new location at the OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing.

AThis year’s event, which takes place on Monday 28 October, will be the fourth time we have held the event here and if the previous years are anything to go by, 2024’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.

Rewinding back to last year, over 200 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multi-purpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It

well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.

When it came to the 2023 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, competition was keen of course, and we were delighted at how many local

restaurants, bars and cafes entered into the festivities. It was fantastic to see all of the nominees together in one room, celebrating the superb quality of independent eateries found in our region and beyond.

One of our most popular awards on the night is the Readers’ Choice Award, voted of entries and after a close call between The Maynard, The George and The Wortley scooped the prize for the second year in over 700 votes.

Each of our 22 winners received an engraved plaque, which were presented on the night by publishing managers Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp and publishing director Amanda Roy.

Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the 2023 Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk

Ten years and COUNTING

t comes as something of a shock to realise that it is ten years since Brocco on the Park was launched to immediate acclaim, as this formerly derelict low budget boarding house was transformed into an immaculate Scandistyle boutique hotel and restaurant.

yours truly may be looking a little rougher around the edges, the beautiful décor within the Edwardian façade and relaxed yet very attentive service that helped Brocco to stand out from the rest from its opening night remains reassuringly in place.

Candlelight casts an attractive glow over the etched glass and pale wood décor, while the open kitchen provides a touch of theatre (no dramatics though, head chef Thomas Wells Lomas and his team work their magic with quiet professionalism).

Modern English cuisine with a seasonal sourced produce is at the heart of a menu

necessary) all tastes and dietary requirements are catered for.

We made our choices while nibbling on a hunk of freshly-baked, warm focaccia bread with a balsamic glaze (£5) and a bowl of creamy, smooth hummus with toasted pitta (£4.50). The focaccia, slightly crisp on the outside, soft and moist within, was dangerously moreish, setting a high bar for what was to follow.

For two reasonably hungry souls, three small plates to share with a couple of sides proved to be just right. Scallops, slightly caramelised and perfectly moist, were accompanied by delicious dabs of artichoke, apple and toffee (£18). A

There may be no such thing as a main course in the world of small sharing plates, but a gorgeous hunk of intensively

bubbling on the surface and a fragrant, sweet body, served in a teacup with a perfect, crisp shortbread biscuit in the saucer. Pistachio cake (£9.25) was

cardamom cream, pumpkin seeds and vanilla ice-cream.

There’s a strong wine list with a great selection available by the glass including a very moreish Matahiwi sauvignon blanc from New Zealand (£11.50) and a super smooth Chilean Via Alta Merlot Reserva (£8.75).

Brocco on the Park looks and tastes as good as ever as it enters its second decade. In other words, it’s pretty outstanding.

standard equipment, and new materials.

Apps that can be used directly in the vehicle display, selectable daytime running light signatures, and the ability to add vehicle functions on-demand at any time enable a high degree of customisation.

The new A3 will initially be available with a choice of two engine/transmissions.

The 35 TFSI with a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine has an output of 148bhp and is offered with a seven-speed S tronic at launch. The 35 TDI with a 2.0-litre diesel model has an output of 148bhp and is paired with seven-speed S tronic. Additional petrol and diesel versions of the A3 Sportback and A3 Saloon will follow later in the year.

Initially the new CLE Cabriolet is available in AMG Line, AMG Line Premium, AMG includes four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrol engines and a four-cylinder diesel – all with mild-hybrid technology.

The new BMW X2 will be priced from £40,515, with the iX2 eDrive20 starting from £51,615.
