stunning range of kitchens is on display, but the company also produces bespoke furniture for every room in the house. They cater to all styles, from traditional to modern handless kitchens, while cocktail cabinets are particularly on trend right now.

After an initial customer consultation, when David will discuss budgets and offer expert design advice, the cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture, which can be sprayed to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint.

David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paintspraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling – something that can happen with vinyl-wrapped doors.

A new era for G&M Lunt EXPERIENCED FUNERAL DIRECTOR MARTYN JOINS OLD-ESTABLISHED FAMILY FIRM. he clocks may be going back but things are moving forward at G&M Lunt, family funeral directors for over 80 years.

Michael Lunt has announced that Martyn Askew, who is Woodseats born and bred with over 40 years in the profession, has joined the company as director of funeral services, responsible for the day to day running of the company after many years’ experience managing the John Fairest Funeral Homes.

G & M Lunt was established by George Lunt in 1932 with his wife Mabel, son Jack and daughter Mary, who joined the company as the business grew. Michael joined in 1969. In 1976 George passed away and Mary’s son Andrew joined in 1985.

Sadly Jack passed away in 1987, so Michael and Andrew ran the business together until Andrew retired. Michael carried on running the business for many years with the support of his dedicated staff.

Now time has come to hand over the reins to Martyn, a friend for over 40 years and an outstanding funeral director.

Michael Lunt will still be actively involved in the business on a day to day basis.

Martyn said: “It is a privilege to be asked, and an honour to accept this appointment.

Our families have been linked in many ways over the years. It is like coming home, and I am looking forward to working for such a well-established and much respected funeral directors as G & M Lunt.”

rom managing electronic music acts in London to tending sheep and digging carrots on a Derbyshire farm is not so much a career change as a complete lifestyle makeover.

But for James Mountain, who walked away from a job as the head of a major talent management business specialising in electronic music acts to head up a charity project based on a farm, it all makes perfect sense.

James has swapped the hustle and bustle of the Big Smoke for a new life as the driving force behind Down to Earth, a charity project based at Lane End Farm Trust in Derbyshire, offering wholesale organic vegetables and meat to a number of Sheffield restaurants and cafes.

And just five minutes into our interview, I was inspired by his farming expertise and passion for locally-grown food. I’d have been forgiven for thinking that James had always been set on this career path, but until two years ago, he was running a talent management business at Ninja Tune, one of the world’s biggest independent record labels.

So what made James switch a high-flying career in the music industry for pastures new in Derbyshire?

“I’m originally from Lincolnshire. I grew up on a farm with a father who was a farmer and a mother who is an incredible gardener. I was always really into music and there was nothing to do growing up, so I’d listen to John Peel and Pete Tong and Giles Peterson, and get the train to London to buy records whenever I could.

“Then as soon as I was old enough I got the hell out of there because it was the middle of nowhere and took myself off to university in Leeds and completely got immersed in the music culture.”

It was here that James started a course in hospitality and business management, which included practical work as a chef.

In his spare time, he would host a student radio show and DJ. After university, he moved down to London and after undertaking work experience at Ninja Tune, he was offered a full-time position there.

Five years later, he set up Stealth Management under the Ninja Tune umbrella, managing some of the most exciting names in the music business including Toddla T. Some years later, he was married with a child and a second

on the way, and the charm that London once had was starting to fade.

As his wife was originally from Sheffield, they decided to make the move north. And although his management business was still booming, James knew he needed a complete change in lifestyle.

“We were doing great stuff and had two top 10 hits in 2013/14. Music should be multi-generational, but I found myself aged 35 talking to excited creative people in their early 20s and I had a realisation that I didn’t want to be telling these people what was cool anymore. I know this sounds clichéd, James with but I wanted to get into Toddla T helping people.”

James Googled ‘outdoor jobs in Sheffield’, found Lane End Farm Trust and 18 months into working on Down To Earth, he is helping the project go from strength to strength.

Word of mouth has been a big part of the charity’s success, but colourful photos of the farm’s produce on Instagram has also ensured a steady stream of requests for their personalised veg boxes, whilst a recent collaboration with Henderson’s Relish has helped them flourish further.

What makes this farm all the more special, is that one area of it is a business with a social conscience. Disadvantaged, vulnerable and disabled young people from Sheffield and Hope Valley work on this therapeutic horticultural project, which creates a sustainable community food cycle.

“We’ve got between seven and 10 customers and most of them are restaurant owners and chefs themselves. I’ll send

them an email at the beginning of the week saying what we’ve got, then we harvest it ourselves with the farming students, deliver it and it all goes back into creating a sustainable charity, where we can pay our staff wages and give our students access to a therapeutic environment.

“I want people to buy from us, not because we are a charity, but because the quality of what we are growing is incredible and we fit into this amazing food community in Sheffield. Our students are at the core of everything and if we don’t support what’s going on in our community, then our charity wouldn’t be able to exist, so they really do feed one another.”

Their faithful clients also include Ashoka on Ecclesall Road, Zeds green grocers in Nether Edge and Seven Hills Bakery on Sharrow Vale Road.

What’s more, local chefs plan their menus with James’ produce in mind. Simon Couth from Hathersage Social Club is one such forward-thinking chef who has selected delicious heritage carrots, Brussels sprouts and red cabbage, to name a few, for his autumn menu.

“I can almost earmark certain areas of our crops to certain people ahead of time, which is the dream scenario and that’s real provenance -based sustainable cooking and growing – that’s really what it’s about.”

BY RACHEL MARTIN. ot many of us have the time or, let's face it, the skills to pull off a really flash dinner party...or do we? You'd be surprised, that with a few tricks of the trade, all manner of miracles can be performed.

If throwing a dinner party feels hopelessly complicated and stressful, we’ve got some news for you: it’s not. Hosting at home can be simple and fuss-free, especially if you start the planning well in advance and don’t sweat the small stuff.

Even if you’re not Martha Stewart, here are some tips to make your next dinner party enjoyable for all - including the host.

Pick a good group

Of people, that is. Choose friends who get along well, have similar interests, and have at least some things in common. If you’re looking to spice things up with a wildcard invitee or two, make sure they'll fit in and won't make the rest of your guests uncomfortable.

Handwritten mailed invitations are nice (if you’re feeling fancy), but emails or phone calls work fine, too.

Ask about allergies ahead of time

It’s never fun to hear about someone’s coeliac disease right as you’re pulling the Beef Wellington from the oven. Most of the time, if a guest has a serious allergy or religious observance, they’ll let you know about it, but it’s always nice to ask anyway. Make sure there’s at least one thing that everyone at the table can enjoy.

Choose the right lighting Lighting is key for any good gathering. Florescent, overhead lights can feel a bit cold and uncomfortable, not to mention they’ll highlight any dust or stains you may have missed while cleaning.

Any space, no matter the size, looks warm and inviting with twinkling tea candles and some string lights.

Be flexible

While a good old-fashioned RSVP is worth its weight in gold, unexpected drop-ins aren’t the end of the world. Make sure your menu won’t fall to pieces if somebody can’t make it or brings an extra friend. The general rule of thumb is to make enough to serve an extra two or three guests.

Three spaces for success

It’s a great idea to have three separate zones, each thoughtfully decorated to create the atmosphere you’re after. The first zone is where you serve the welcome cocktails and nibbles - in summer, this may be out on the deck or your impeccably mowed lawn. Once the meal is ready, invite guests to take a seat at your beautifully laid dining table (hint: a gorgeous arrangement of fresh flowers never goes astray. Also, pull out the linen napkins for this one). Finally, create a zone where guests can retreat to cosy couches for a final glass of wine or coffee.

A memorable meal

Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Yes, fabulous food will impress your guests, but they’ll be less than impressed if they have to wait until 10:30pm before the first course is served. Choose recipes that allow you to prepare as much as possible in advance, so that you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time socialising. Round out the menu with a show-stopping dessert, and remember, little imperfections in your cooking are nothing to apologise for. Your guests will be grateful for the effort you’ve gone to.

A drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, a twist of black pepper, a sprinkle of salt, a herb garnish or a dollop of natural yogurt can turn a simple dish into something really special. Just have a variety of condiments and dressings on the table for your guests to help themselves.

Join the fun

Don't forget, you're part of the party too. Try not to spend all your time in the kitchen, sit down and enjoy the food you've spent so long putting together.

Laugh it off

Last but not least, don’t take yourself (or your dinner party) too seriously. Nobody will care if the casserole is ever-so-slightly uneven or the drinks don’t come in mason jars – hey, they’re getting free food, great conversation and tasty drinks. There’s no need to work yourself up over mistakes people probably won’t even notice.

If you’re on a budget Hosting a dinner party can end up costing you a lot of money, especially if you like to impress, but this doesn’t have to be the case if you host your party strategically. Try these tips for throwing dinner parties without blowing your entire budget.

Don’t attempt a maiden voyage

It might seem like a good idea to try a new recipe, but there are few things sadder than realizing that the pork was supposed to have rested for four hours - 45 minutes before guests arrive. Whatever you do, don't try making an exquisite dish for the first time on the night you host your party.

Ask guests to BYOB

It’s nice to provide guests with beverages for the evening, but decent wine and cocktails can be pricey.

Instead, provide your guests with a welcome drink, but ask them to BYOB or bring a bottle of wine to share at dinner. There will be plenty to go around.

Skip the fancy wines

With all the cheap and quality wines out there, you don't need to shell out for a fancy bottle. Look for varieties from lesser-known countries, like Turkey or Romania.

Add inexpensive ambiance When you look back on the last dinner party you went to, you probably remember the conversations, laughs and the delicious lemon fish – the china plates or rustic centrepiece were probably less of a highlight.

Still, dazzling décor can do a lot to create ambiance. You can impress with inexpensive, elegant touches like fresh flowers, candles and mason jars, and get creative with serveware: serve the main course in a casserole dish, cast-iron skillet, or dutch oven, and arrange appetizers on a wooden cutting board. To add to the tranquil atmosphere, set up speakers outside and play soft music.

Scour your home

Preparing your table and backyard for your party doesn't require a trip to a boutique. You may be surprised with all the useful goodies you can find around your home. Your indoor furniture can fashion a cheery backyard sitting area, tables can be arranged to serve as separate drink and dessert sections, and martini and shot glasses can serve as classy dessert cups. An eclectic mix of plates can also create a laidback feel, and brown craft paper can give your table a finished look - and simplify post-dinner cleanup.

Go easy with the hors d’oeuvres

IT’S AUTUMN AND BROCCO KITCHEN IS MAKING THE MOST OF THE FOODIE RICHES THAT THIS TIME OF YEAR BRINGS, SAYS CHRIS WILSON. utumn brings fantastic opportunities for restaurants, with the best of British vegetables in peak condition as well as gorgeous game and fish.

So the launch of the new autumn menu at Kitchen, the stand-alone restaurant at boutique hotel Brocco on the Park, provides the perfect opportunity for a return visit.

I’ve been a big fan of this place since it first opened and an ever-growing number of awards confirms this is not a lone view. The man from Michelin likes it too; no stars (Brocco isn’t anywhere near fussy or expensive enough for that, thank goodness) but Kitchen wins a hard-earned listing in the latest bible for good eating.

It’s been mentioned more than once in the past that Brocco owner Tiina Carr’s Finnish roots have obviously spilled over into the lovingly-designed look, which is all about that Scandinavian feeling of cosy contentment known as ‘hygge’. That painstaking attention to detail when it comes to lighting, table settings, mood and service remains as impressive as ever.

Meanwhile the latest seasonal menu from head chef Leslie Buddington and his team is bursting with good things and worth a serious mulling over. To help me in my decision making a signature cocktail, the Brocco Mary (£7) helped sharpen the old grey matter. My more abstemious companion resumed her love affair with Brocco’s freshly made Very berry smoothies (£4), bursting with blackberry, raspberry and strawberry goodness.

small plates as the menu would have it) included ham hock croquettes, warm roasted squash with aubergine and lentil salad and baked walnut crusted goat’s cheese with poached pear and rosemary honey.

All were tempting but we plumped for beetroot and Akavit cured salmon, dill yoghurt and beetroot crispbread (£9), a plate packed with vibrant deep reds that looked a treat and was bursting with savoury flavour; and prawn and charred spring onion fritters with sesame dressing (£9), full of moist, juicy goodness. Add some freshly baked bread (£2.50) with a superb crisp, chewy crust and we were off to a fine start.

We dined on a Tuesday evening, which brings a special ‘Chef ’s Classic plate’ choice of hearty main course and dessert for a bargain £16. On this occasion it was beef and ale pie followed by rice pudding and strawberry jam. For cheffing and setting of this quality, that’s a great value school night treat.

But another dish on the specials board had caught my eye, whole roasted partridge with salt-baked celeriac, pickled beetroot and parsnip crisps (£18). The accompaniments were spot on, but the bird was star of the show, crisply-skinned, absolutely tender and with just the right amount of gamey goodness. Hats off to the wonderful restaurant manager Nick Beedham, who spotted me chasing the beast round the plate and suggested a finger bowl and extra napkins so I could go hands-on and finish the job properly was the only sensible solution.

Across the table a fine chunk of monkfish

sat grandly in a gorgeously thick chowder of smoked haddock and mussels with a samphire garnish (£25). Not a mouthful was wasted.

On the side half portions of triple-cooked chips and hasselback potatoes with sour cream (£3.50) and green beans with shaved parmesan (£3.50) completed a splendid main course.

The wine list is good too and a small glass of Gavi di Gavi (£8) and a large glass of Les Fontanelles Pinot Noir (£7.70) did full justice to some outstanding food.

Desserts, where so many restaurants run out of steam, keep the stellar standards.

Sicilian lemon sorbet was zingy, ginger caramel ice-cream delicate and subtle (both £2.20 a scoop) while a dish of chocolate mousse, brandy snap, orange coulis and cognac truffle was dark, rich and addictive. A pot of fresh mint tea with honey (£3) and a strong espresso (£1.80) completed a perfect picture.

RACHEL MARTIN DISCOVERS A GEM OF A CAFÉ IN AN UNLIKELY LOCATION. hat does the word café mean to you?

A scotch egg and a pork pie, a slice washed down by a steaming cuppa?

Or perhaps un petit café au lait, or a truck stop pukka pasty?

The Oxford English dictionary describes a café as “a small restaurant selling light meals and drinks”, and when I was told there was an independent café in the heart of Sheffield Cathedral – created by the cathedral, for the cathedral – I had half expected a homespun kind of set up with some wonky pastries and mismatched tea cups.

Instead, 1554 Coffee boasts what must be the grandest welcome to any café in Sheffield – with a jaw-dropping Victorian stained glass window, four stone panels from a tomb commissioned c.1584 by George VI Earl of Shrewsbury, and a name that harks back to the year when Queen Mary Tudor granted a Royal charter that gave back confiscated lands and property to the burgesses of Sheffield.

It’s right on the map for historians, retirees and parents with young kids, and is crammed from breakfast to supper with customers digging into deli savouries, homemade sandwiches and fresh from-the-oven scones with jam and butter.

But its grand interior is no mask for what we’re really there for; the food. The short menu lets vibrant produce do the talking, and

the classics like pork pie and pickle and lemon drizzle cake are there – why fix something if it’s not broken. But other less calorific dishes are available too, such as organic fresh-as-a-daisy salads and soup of the day.

We started our afternoon with a plum and cherry Breckland Orchard posh pop (£2.20) and soy latte (£2.85), followed by a mushroom, goats cheese and spinach pizza bread (£3.95) and plum chutney, spinach and goats cheese quiche (£3.95). They both came piping hot and full of flavour, and we added a side of salad and coleslaw too, but you probably don’t need to – the portions are very generous.

I was delighted to see a ploughman’s platter on the menu, and when the plate arrived it was piled high with big slabs of golden-as-a-spring buttercup cheddar cheese, a Wateralls pork pie, coleslaw, green salad, pickle, pickled onions and lovely wholemeal bread. For £5.95, it was outstanding value.

The cakes – we couldn’t resist the counter display – are also worth noting. My companion tackled the delightfully syrupy and chewy carrot cake (£3.05) and took half of it home to see her through the rest of the day. And my scone – still warm and just plucked from the oven – pulled apart beautifully around the sweet and soft sultanas.

A classic done well.

It wouldn’t be a true British café if the tea wasn’t something to shout about. Glass cups arrived teeming with mellow but burstingwith-flavour freshly brewed Tea Pigs mac feng green and chai tea, and Earl Grey (£2.30).

And, if you want decaf, soya or almond milk, have been considerate in every detail.

It’s so difficult these days to simply stumble across “a small restaurant selling light meals and drinks” that doesn’t also loudly proclaim its utter fabulousness. But - a destination not just for hungry history buffs but for foodies first and foremost – 1554 appears to be having a renaissance of its very own.

In this case, it would be more apt if “café” stood for affordable, good-quality, nononsense fare with unpretentious expectations.

LIGHT AFTER THE DARKNESS BEN ORRAH SUFFERED POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER AS A RESULT OF WATCHING HIS PREMATURE TWINS’ FIGHT FOR LIFE. NOW HE’S ON A MISSION TO HELP OTHER DADS. RACHEL MARTIN REPORTS. n November last year, Ben Orrah’s wife and childhood sweetheart Paula gave birth to tiny twins Polly and Logan, at just 32 weeks. Polly arrived first, weighing 3lb 9 oz. and Logan followed weighing 3lb 15 oz., meaning a long intensive care stay on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Jessop Wing.

Ben is a biomedical scientist at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and often works with the NICU as part of his job, but it still didn’t prepare him for the journey as a new parent of premature babies.

“Our first visit to see the twins was a complete shock to the system,” He says. “The noise, the beeping of the machines, the hustle and bustle of all the doctors, sisters and nurses on the unit and how many other families were there, each in a similar scenario to us.”

As the weeks went by, Polly and Logan had

plenty of ups and downs, but as they entered their sixth week on the unit and neared Christmas, the twins were making great progress.

“The journey from birth to getting our babies home was one of the toughest things we have ever had to do, yet we were very lucky. The staff on NICU were an amazing support to us, but the whole experience of seeing Polly and Logan so poorly had a huge impact on my mental health. On the one hand, we were the happiest people in the world, then on the other, we were constantly worried about our babies and hoped they would be ok.

“Paula was always so positive, but desperately wanted to breastfeed, which was difficult with two premature babies. For the first time I could see her struggling, and I seemed to be getting all the fun times – the

cuddles and the bonding – and I felt so guilty.”

Seven weeks later, just before Christmas, Polly and Logan were discharged. But Ben had started to have flashbacks and awful nightmares.

“I’d just start sobbing uncontrollably for no apparent reason and I would black out at times and relive a particular moment in great detail over and over, before coming round and wondering what had happened to me.

“The nightmares felt so real I often woke up crying as if we were back there all over again. I felt like a fraud and a failure, and at first, I hid it from Paula. I felt if, despite everything, she was holding our family together, what kind of man was I that I was struggling.”

Ben endeavoured to research how he was feeling, hoping for some kind of answer, and

WE’RE ON THE HUNT FOR HEROES came across post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) websites that outlined every symptom he was experiencing. Each website mentioned however, that it was common for mums to feel that way after an experience like theirs, but nothing about dads.

“This again made me feel like a failure.

Then I thought of all the families who were worse off than us, and it was just an awful cycle of guilt and sadness.

“Paula one morning caught me sobbing at the edge of our bed and I just opened up fully and told her everything I was feeling from that point on she was my rock.

“Then one day I blurted it out to my manager. He was really supportive and referred me to occupational health, who got me the help I needed. This was the best thing I could have done for myself, and I was diagnosed with PTSD, severe depression and anxiety.

“I was scared of how far I had slipped, but I was getting help and making changes to my day-to-day life, which made a big difference, and now the darkness has passed.

“My goal was that I wanted my family to grow up in a house of love and laughter, and I needed to be the version of me I liked again.

I needed to let go of the negative thoughts and realise that I had nothing to feel guilty about. And most of all, I needed to remember that Polly and Logan were better off with me in their lives.

“The therapy helped me get there and it also brought me and Paula even closer together, because I started to share everything with her without feeling I was burdening her. We are now at a point where we look forwards more than we do backwards.”

Polly and Logan are healthy and happy and Ben is now wanting to talk more openly about his feelings, in hopes that others don’t suffer alone.

He is hosting a rock show with his band,

Fear Lies, to raise funds for Sheffield Hospitals Charity, and to say thank you for the care he and his wife received at the Jessop Wing.

He would like to welcome anyone going through the same experiences to go along for support and advice.

“I don’t want other dads, or anyone that has felt the same way, to be ashamed of Happier family: Ben got the help he needed – now he’s urging other fathers to seek support if they need it

seeking help. I want to make sure no one living with PTSD ever feels like I did, or that they have to suffer alone.”

Having PTSD isn't a choice or a sign of weakness, and it's important to remember that you are not alone. You don’t have to talk about the trauma if you don’t want to, but the support and companionship of others is an incredibly powerful tool for healing.

Never mind Superman or Wonder Woman... Westside is on the look-out for some real life local heroes.

We know there are lots of people out there who dedicate a huge part of their lives to making the world a better place for others.

We’re taking about people like John Burkhill (far right), our very own pram-pushing, wig-wearing, fundraising legend. He’s the Man with the Pram, who has dedicated his life to raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Quite rightly, John has become an instantly recognisable and widely praised local personality because of his tireless efforts to improve the lives of others. But we know there are many more inspirational characters out there whose stories deserve to be shared by a wider public.

That‘s why Westside is launching a search for the heroes and heroines who are really making a difference in our community... and we need your help.

Westbourne’s rugby stars are charity match champs The Westbourne School under 11s rugby team displayed all their winning skills when they took part in the Techman Rugby Festival tournament at Barlborough Hall.

The festival supports sport for all, in particular young people with disabilities. The money raised from the ten participating school teams will go to support the charity Ready, which raises money to help young people with disabilities play sport and take part in healthy activities for fun and fitness.

The Westbourne boys got off to a great start winning their opening game against Mylnhurst School by 3–0.

Sam supports St Luke’s shops with her 12 Days of Christmas challenge On the 12 Days of Christmas Sam Warsop has a very special gift for St Luke’s Hospice.

But instead of the classic festive song’s Partridge in a Pear Tree, she’s giving Sheffield’s only hospice a gift that will make a difference.

SPIDER WALK IS BACK AND SUPPORTING WHIRLOW HALL FARM The University of Sheffield Students’ Union RAG Spider Walk is back, a 13 mile night hike into the Peak District and back that will be raising money for leading South Yorkshire charities.

This year’s event will be raising money for children’s charity Whirlow Hall Farm, Sheffield Volunteering and an additional two organisations, one voted for by students and one chosen by the students who raised the most money last year with all the charities are guaranteed to be local to Sheffield or the surrounding areas.

Exciting new chapter for one of city’s longest established legal firms The Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Anne Murphy, is set to officially unveil the brand new offices of one of Sheffield’s longest established law practices.

Graysons Solicitors, first formed in 1925, has moved to bigger premises at Courtwood House, Silver Street Head, very near to its former Paradise Square home in the city’s professional quarter.

There are two types of LPA – a property and financial affairs LPA and a health and welfare LPA. Both enable you (the donor) to give someone else (the attorney) the legal right to deal with your affairs should you not be able to. Both types of LPA must be set up whilst you have mentally capacity, but the health and welfare LPA can only be used once you have lost capacity, whereas with a property and affairs LPA, you can give control to someone before you become incapacitated if you wish to do so.

An attorney is under obligation only to act in your best interests at all times, and various safeguards exist to ensure this. When making your personal welfare LPA, you can exercise a great deal of control. For example, you can specify whether your attorney can decide who you have contact with when you lose capacity or whether they can consent to, or refuse, life-sustaining or life-prolonging treatment.

Anne says: “Many people think of LPAs as something that you don’t need to consider until you are older; but this simply isn’t true.

According to the Alzheimer’s Society, there are currently over 850,000 people in the UK with dementia and 40,000 of those are under 65. The society says that by 2025 over 1 million people will have the disease. However, it isn’t only dementia that causes loss of capacity: other diseases and accidents can also lead to incapacity and the inability to make decisions about your own life. If you were affected in this way, wouldn’t you rather make sure that someone you trust and love makes decisions about your money and your health?”

When making an LPA, you can Anne choose one or Rogers more attorneys and you can decide if they are to make decisions individually or jointly. They must be aged 18 or over, not bankrupt and willing to take on the responsibility – and take it seriously.

It might also mean that your assets are locked down until permission is granted from the court, which can cause substantial difficulty for your family who may have to pay for your care.”

Lost wills: Ensuring your legacy is secure

There is no central will registry and with an everchanging legal landscape, tracking down an original will can be very difficult – especially if the will was created some time ago.

All reasonable efforts should be made to try and find the original will. “Reaching out to friends, family and advisors is a good starting point and trying to establish a paper trail may also help.” Kelly Wharin, an Associate at Irwin Mitchell Private Wealth’s Sheffield office, explained. “Finding the original document will save a potentially time-consuming and costly process in the future.”

But what if the original will is nowhere to be found? Being part of the Will, Trust and Estate Disputes team, Kelly frequently sees cases involving disputes over missing wills.

She advises that finding evidence that the original will was made can be a great help. “If it’s possible to obtain a solicitors’ file, a copy of the will or even a handwritten note made by the deceased concerning the will, an application can be made to the Probate Registry without the original will.”

Where an original will was in the custody of the deceased and cannot be found after their death there is a legal presumption that

the will was destroyed by the deceased with an intention to revoke it. However, this presumption can be overturned in circumstances where evidence exists to suggest that there is a more probable reason for the will being missing. The court will assess the available evidence and ask itself: is

“Finding the original document will save a potentially time-consuming and costly process in the future.” the most likely explanation for the will being missing that the deceased destroyed it with the intention of revoking it? In the absence of any evidence, the presumption will apply.

“What counts as evidence in this situation?

Any sort of records by the deceased or copy wills or oral evidence of conversations with the deceased could be vital pieces of evidence

in these situations. If there is any sort of letter or record by the deceased about the existence of the will and their intentions for it, then this acts as primary evidence that the original wasn’t destroyed,” said Kelly.

This means it may be possible to use a copy of the will for securing probate, but only if the evidence is strong enough. The best way to prevent this scenario would be to store the original will at the solicitors’ office which drew up the document. “It’s the safest place to keep a legal document,” Kelly explained, “Plus the solicitor will be very used to the process.”

Telling family, friend or any advisors where your will is stored is helpful for those dealing with your estate. “It’s not a nice thing to think about, but easy access to your will is so important for your family or friends.”
