BY LUCY JAMES AND MARIA ILIFFE. eafy, historic, picturesque, and described as ‘pretty’ by the famous poet Sir John Betjeman in the poem ‘An Edwardian Sunday’, the suburb of Broomhill lies two miles west of Sheffield’s city centre.

Over the past two centuries, Broomhill has become one of the most inviting suburbs within the green city – a reflection of what it has to offer, and with a poet laureate praising the small suburb, it comes as no surprise that it is full to the brim of beauty and diversity.

Broomhill is a place of spectacular Victorian architecture, with many of the original features of Victorian villas and shops still remaining as impressive dwellings, and not forgetting the charming characteristics of the local amenities such as the pubs and churches, and one of Sheffield’s most popular spots – The Botanical Gardens which dates back to 1836.

Broomhill’s neighbouring suburbs Ranmoor, Crosspool and Lodge Moor are two other stunning locations, with each of them being known for their green spaces, history, and diversity.

Crosspool, like Broomhill is a leafy and peaceful area of the city with fantastic transport links and an abundance of local amenities, and Lodge Moor on the other hand, is idyllic with some of Sheffield’s most picturesque walks starting here which will lead you into the wilderness and passes tranquil waterfalls. If you’re looking to escape the city life for a while, Lodge Moor is the perfect place to do so.

Ranmoor is another more recent suburb and was mostly developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it features a number of large houses that were built for the city’s steel magnates, as well as, most notably, a large church, St John’s. This church was opened 24 April 1879 but was almost entirely destroyed by fire on 2 January 1887. All that survived from the original church was the tower and spire, which still stands today.

however, they are slightly more expensive than those elsewhere in the city with the average house price within the postcode area (S10) being £344,573 as of January 2021.

What’s there?

Broomhill is still a thriving area when it comes to shopping, and even the shops in the suburb hold an incredible amount of history after the city centre’s shops were bombed during the Second World War and were relocated to Broomhill in order to be able to continue business as usual.

The areas each have supermarkets and smaller shops, as well as some independent boutiques and salons located nearby, with the locals never having to travel for more than ten minutes to get their essentials. There are plenty of food and drink places located in each area, making the areas great for those who enjoy socialising with friends and family.

Ideal for families, there are doctors’ surgeries located in Broomhill, Crosspool and Lodge Moor, and there are plenty of great schools in, and around the area including nurseries, primary schools, and secondary schools.

If, on the odd chance the area is short

of the amenities that you find yourself needing, there is an abundance of transport links across all of these areas, and the city centre is only an 11-minute drive or bus journey away, as is Sheffield’s train station.

Things to do Botanical Gardens

Situated off of the popular Ecclesall Road, still in the S10 area, sits the Sheffield Botanical Gardens which date back to 1836. The parkland stretches across an impressive 19 acres and has 5,000 different species of plants. With water fountains and ponds dotted around the green space and in amongst colourful flowers, the gardens create a stunning and relaxing environment for a walk or a picnic.

‘the bear pit’, a Grade II listed structure which was built in 1836 to home a black bear and is the best example of a bear pit in the UK today. A Yorkshire legend says that a child was killed after falling into the pit in 1870. Full of history and beauty, the Sheffield Botanical Gardens is the perfect time out in the summer to escape the bustling city life.

Redmires Reservoirs

Fed from the Hallam Moors, the three Redmires Reservoirs are situated just outside of Sheffield and the Peak

District. Providing ideal walking routes for adventurers; the main circuit takes around an hour and a half. These stunning bodies of water are home to hundreds of wildlife species, the area provides a true bird watchers heaven and often wildfowl and waders can be seen swimming.

Each route shows different historical memories, tying the beautiful greenery to its heroic origins. The tall surveying tower and reservoirs were constructed following Sheffield’s cholera epidemic in the 1800s to provide clean drinking water to Sheffield Residents. Despite their clashing, crashing industrial beginnings, they are now somewhat of a peaceful beauty spot. Look out for the timely remains of the trenches, dug to train soldiers before they were deployed to France in World War One.Views can also be appreciated from the higher points on the tracks, perfect for a serene moment with stunning and historical surroundings.

Wyming Brook

An unexpected slice of wilderness so close to the city centre, Sheffield’s

This Sight of Scientific Interest is protected by The Wildlife Trust and provides a prime place for spotting wildlife and rare species of birds, whilst basking in the greenery.

Previously set aside for the exclusive use of the nobility in medieval times, when it was part of the hunting grounds; the area has been transformed into a nature reserve and ideal walking location. With easy strolls by the streams or higher, rockier routes with dramatic views of the Rivelin reservoirs and the city beyond, you have a choice of the main six mile scenic loop or an enchanting three-mile stroll. Wyming Brook has received a prestigious Green Flag Award, recognising it as one of the very best green spaces in the UK, a true escape from the bustling centre.

Many of our pre-school children even come back to work for us."

Nursery opening hours are from 7.30am to 6.30pm, in addition to providing breakfast, after school, holiday and French clubs for children up to 11 years of age. The nursery also benefits from Early Years teachers with specialists in music, French and short tennis.

All of their meals are home-cooked, with ingredients sourced from local suppliers and any dietary requirements requested by parents can be catered for in order to meet their children’s needs.

The nurseries have spacious rooms and extensive playgrounds, as well as a mud kitchen for children to explore. Forest schools were also introduced in 2015 and have been a resounding success.

“It’s important, especially with parents working, that children have the chance to be in touch with the environment,”

continues Stephanie. “Our staff are trained to deliver classes in numeracy and literacy outside. It’s also a great environment for children’s imaginations to grow.”

The Old School House not only helps to nurture its children, but its members of staff too. They are a registered CACHE training centre, offering training up to levels 2, 3 and 4 in childcare, with the majority of their staff also having first aid training. They also provide NQT training for newly qualified teachers to complete their qualification.

Furthermore, they promote fundamental British values (according to Ofsted) such as democracy, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.

PA JEWELLERY TALKS ABOUT THE INCREASING INTEREST IN LAB GROWN DIAMONDS. aboratory grown or synthetic diamonds are a relatively new product to the jewellery market. Diamond has been synthesised for decades, but the quality of material produced was suitable only for industrial uses. It is only in recent years that stones of sufficient quality for jewellery have been produced consistently and economically enough to be brought to the market.

Lab grown diamonds are chemically identical to their natural counterparts and have mostly identical properties, including the incredible lustre and brilliance and extreme hardness that natural diamonds are famous for. They don’t look or feel any different to natural diamonds and modern stones of fine quality are virtually impossible to distinguish from natural diamonds without advanced testing equipment.

The key to feeling confident about knowing what you are buying is to choose a trusted source; someone who knows diamonds and is happy to talk in detail about they are supplying! For stones larger than around 0.30ct an independent diamond grading report from a reputable laboratory is also a good idea.

The principal difference between natural and lab grown diamonds is in the way that they come into being. While

natural diamonds occurred under natural forces deep within the earth millions of years ago, lab grown stones are created in factories, combining the required raw materials using machinery that can simulate the extreme temperatures and pressures necessary.

New methods and techniques for the manufacture of lab grown diamonds continue to emerge, allowing finer quality stones to be produced more easily and at less expense. In recent years the creation of diamonds suitable for jewellery via chemical vapour deposition (CVD) at lower temperatures and very low pressure has revolutionised production, with much lower costs and beautiful stones.

We have recently noticed an increasing interest in lab grown diamonds amongst customers. Although a relatively new

product, they are rapidly becoming more available and are being heavily marketed to price-conscious and ethically aware consumers. In response, we have widened our network of diamond suppliers to enable us to offer lab-grown stones when requested.

While researching these products one of the things our jewellers and gemmologists noticed is how much the information available is dominated by the interests of the company supplying the information, weighted towards natural or lab grown diamonds as required.

Although traditionally a stockist of natural diamonds we have tried to keep an open mind and balance the ‘pros and cons’ of the two products against each other as we consider the various aspects that may lead you to choose one over the other.

When entering, you are instantly hit by the beautiful smell of delicious food that fills the deli. The warmest of welcomes is given to ensure complete comfort and happiness. The staff were friendly and excited for you to be spending your time at their beloved deli.

It felt as if you were part of the family which made the dining experience all the more wholesome. We were becoming increasingly excited to tuck in and taste the great food that was on offer.

The ambience was authentic and enjoyable with a modern and functional interior, Greek music playing in the background and photographs and paintings scattered around. Dish by dish our spread of food was delivered from the kitchen with a proud smile on the staff ’s faces. They were noticeably informative about each and every dish, describing it in a simple way.

Every dish was generous in portion and well presented. The meal was beautifully cooked in an authentic way, from the owner’s mother making the baklava to very well constructed recipes.

Tzatziki, homous, strofilia and olive paté dips were brought out and accompanied the food perfectly and condiments were provided on the table.

It was a delight to taste a mixture of different dishes to get the full Greek dining experience. A couple of our favourites had to be the Greek lemon potatoes, cooked in olive oil, lemon juice and herbs – they were both delish and moreish, I would come back to The Greedy Greek Deli just to have more of those.

We followed this with a platter formed of minced beef, lamb and chicken kofta with a traditional, fresh Greek salad – The meat was tender and accompanied the rest of the dishes perfectly. The variety of vegetarian dishes were, to my surprise, especially beautiful with stuffed peppers filled with vegetables, rice, herbs and feta and spinach/feta samosas. The baklava was a lovely end to a special meal, made with filo pastry, nuts and honey syrup.

The customer service from the waiters and Dennis and Helen (the owners of Greedy Greek) was exceptional, ensuring we were enjoying our meal and making sure they were available to assist us if necessary. The whole experience of eating food whilst in that specific environment worked perfectly - it felt like an ideal place to catch up with friends and family. It was authentic

Greek food served by a proud Greek owner.

The deli provide vegan and vegetarian options and also have a vast variety of dishes which makes it the perfect opportunity to indulge in something you may never have tried. I suggest taking the recommendations of the staff if you’re looking to try something new.

Conversing with the staff was a delight, with stories and memories of Zante and recommendations of places to stay, should you ever have the privilege of visiting. The conversations added to the experience and made the evening even more enjoyable.

As well as the traditional pub classics, you’ll find an updated burger menu as well as a comprehensive pizza selection. They’re welcome additions to a cosy and welcoming suburban pub, which is located in one of the leafiest parts of Sheffield.

Everyone is made to feel welcome at the Bull’s Head – we certainly got that impression – whether you’re there for drinks, dinner or just to watch the football on one of the many big screens.

There’s plenty of space inside and beer gardens to the front and rear.

The pub is run by Heather Gamwells and Nigel Bickerstaff who pride themselves on friendly customer service and good, quality homemade food.We sampled this first-hand, arriving on a Sunday to sample one area of the menu that has been resistant to change - and all the better for it. Heather’s Sunday lunches are well-known in the area, not just for the sizeable portions but for the fact she makes each dinner individually - this is a far cry from the self-serve carvery style

that you’ll find at many venues.

“You might have to wait a little longer,” said Heather. “But we want to make sure everything is as fresh as possible.You’ll taste the difference.”

The Sunday lunch menu is served between 12-4pm and offers one course for £12.50, two for £15.50 and three for £18.50. There’s a children’s option for £4.95 or if they prefer to eat from the regular menu - as mine did - they can choose from fish fingers, chicken nuggets, bolognaise and pizza, along with a dessert, for £4.95 also.

After ordering drinks from the bar Guinness for me, red wine for my wife and J2Os for my children - we jumped straight into the main course, which came with a choice of beef, pork or chicken. Such is the popularity of the lunches, the pork had already sold out by the time we arrived for our 3.30pm sitting, so we both opted for roast beef, which can be a bit of rarity in our household with two fussy children. They opted for a margherita pizza and chicken nuggets, chips and beans.

The roast dinners are served with roast potatoes, proper Yorkshire puddings and

a selection of seasonal vegetables, which on this occasion included red cabbage, leeks, cauliflower, green beans and mashed carrot and swede. Gravy and cheese sauce was supplied too.

Everything was really well cooked, the beef particularly tender and I really liked the Yorkshire puddings. There were no complaints from my children either as they finished every last bite.

Desserts are homemade too and we decided to go traditional by choosing spotted dick and ginger cake, both made fresh in the morning and served with lashings of custard. Two chocolate ice creams for the younger diners finished proceedings nicely.

A moving memorial REMEMBRANCE AT SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL WILL BE EXTRA SPECIAL THIS YEAR – WITH YOUR HELP. heffield Cathedral always makes an effort to remember those loved and lost and this year will be no different.

Remembrance takes place in November but this year, as well as their usual service, which will be held on Sunday 14 November, they will be creating a very special Remembrance display – and need your help.

“We want to create a moving memorial through a carpet of poppies to lay across the floor of the military chapel,” said Sheffield Cathedral’s development manager, Ben Rossi. “We’re asking you to knit, crochet, embroider, make or even draw your own poppies, we don’t mind.”

Appealing to schools, community groups or people at home, send your creations to Sheffield Cathedral by Friday 22 October and they will form part of the display.

An urban legend THERE’S SOMETHING UNIQUELY SHEFFIELD ABOUT LOCKSLEY GIN – BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN A DIFFERENT STORY. Words: Richard Abbey

ou’ve heard the theory about Robin Hood, right? I’m not talking internet conspiracy theories but bonafide historical documents that detail that the English folklore legend was actually born in Sheffield not Nottingham, as is the preconception.

The Sloane Manuscript, which is stored at the British Museum, is the earliest surviving attempt to record the story of Robin Hood and dates from around 1600. It states that ‘Robin Hood was borne at Lockersley, in Yorkshire, or after others, in Nottinghamshire, in the days of Henry the second, about the yeare 1160’. Lockerlsey later became Locksley and later still Loxley, which we all know, is in Sheffield.

This is still open to conjecture of course but makes for an interesting tale.

It certainly piqued the interest of John Cherry who was looking for a unique selling point and branding for a gin he was hoping to launch in the US. Sheffield-born John was living and working in New York at the time but had dreams of setting up his own distillery. Due to a number of factors, including complicated licensing laws and a conflict of interest with his existing job, it looked to be an impossibility. That was until he decided to move ‘home’.

“My wife and I had been talking about it for a while,” he explains. “My parents were ageing, our daughter was about three-and-a-half and we were talking about where she was going to go to school.

“Every holidays we’d been coming back to Sheffield, we’d already got that network here so it was a no-brainer. It

was the summer of the 2012 Olympics when we made the decision.”

John, his wife Cynthia, and their daughter Freddie moved back in January 2013 and started setting up the distillery straight away, which they named Locksley Distilling Co. “We were looking for a unique selling point,” he says. “When we were throwing ideas around in New York I’d mentioned Robin Hood and the link to Sheffield and everyone’s ears popped up.

“We were really looking at something that had global impact and would be recognised.You go anywhere in the world – South Africa, Chile – everyone knows stories of Robin Hood. He’s a global folklore icon.”

With branding settled, John turned his hand to the practical aspects and creating a knock-out gin, although he admits he was something of a novice.

“I’d been in the booze industry for 16 years and been to a lot of distilleries, a lot of wineries, so the knowledge was there, I’d just never put it into practice,” says John, who was a general manager for two liquour stores in Manhattan prior to returning to the city.

“We bought a little pot still and for our initial gin, Sir Robin of Locksley, we did 104 variations over eight months.

Eventually we went back to recipe number 61 which was a play on a London Dry. “Back in 2013 when we were doing the flavour development, when you went into a pub all you saw was London Dry – Gordons, Bombay,Tanqueray, Beefeater.

They’re all dry gins. For me, from a drinking background, I always wanted to find a gin you could drink just on its own.

“To do that we started playing around with different botanical sets and we found some that gave it more viscosity, made it smoother and sweeter so you got that sipability whilst still making a cracking G&T at the same time.”

No doubt you’ve seen the trademark ‘R’ and green-backed bottles adorning the shelves of bars, restaurants and small independents around the city. It launched at the perfect time, well before the gin explosion of 2016/17, and has maintained its reputation for quality ever since.

Not one to rest on his laurels, John had plans for the business to grow, which started by moving out of his mum and dad’s attic.

“With the branding, I’d had the idea of being in the Loxley Valley but I couldn’t find anywhere,” recalls John.

“By chance I knew of Portland Works, thought it was cool, so randomly turned up and met the building manager.

“It’s a great space.You have to put up with the idiosyncrasies of working in a Victorian cutlery factory, it’s had its challenges, but it’s a good space and a good community.”

The main HQ for Locksley Distilling Co occupies a first floor space in the works but they also have a separate bottling space, storage and a room where they host their ‘Gin School’. They have invested in more equipment, including a 112 www.sheffieldvibe.com

vacuum still, and have inevitably expanded their range.

As well as Sir Robin of Locksley there’s a Raspberry and Cardamom gin, Navy Strength VSOT (Very Special Old Tom) gin, and Morocello, a blood orange citrus liqueur. John has also worked with other Sheffield businesses to produce a ‘Co-Lab’ range, which includes Speciality Coffee Liqueur (with Foundry coffee roasters) and Cocoa Nib Liqueur (with Bullion© Craft Chocolate). They have also made gins and spirits for businesses including Thornbridge Brewery, Thyme Café and Siren.

Like the majority of businesses, Locksley Distilling were hit by the pandemic and are only just getting back to some kind of normality.

“People assume we’ve been rocking it through Covid but we haven’t,” says John. “People haven’t been buying £50 bottles of booze, they’ve been drinking

cheap beer, cheap wine, plenty of it, for sure.

“We saw the closing of the gin school, talks and tours, so our experiential stuff has been closed for 18 months with the exception of a month or two between various lockdowns.

“Bars, restaurants and hospitality have been shut. We’ve not been able to do any external events. Every kind of revenue direction, with the exception of web traffic, has been closed to us. We’ve come out brighter and better but it’s been a rough 18 months.”

Their talks and tours, which start from £15, are a great way to see the working distillery – you can even try a nip or two – whilst at their Gin School you can make your very own gin to take home (from £95). With a huge array of botanicals to choose from, you can really make this a bespoke experience. It’d make a nice gift for Christmas too.

Spending time with John, he is warm, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about his product. For a brand that was originally intended for the US market, Sir Robin of Locksley gin has captured the imagination both locally and domestically and is a great success story in a great part of the city.

Whether you believe Robin Hood is from Sheffield or not, well that’s up to you.

BY MARTIN EDWARDS. here are time-honoured traditions that have to be observed at Christmas. The ritual is enshrined in The five commandments we all know so well.

1. Thou shalt attend the office Christmas party 2. Thou shalt beg forgiveness the next morning, and thy thoughts will be cringeworthy (“Did I really kiss a man on the forehead?”)

3. Thou shalt order a multitude of kitchen gadgets from Lakeland and place them in gift boxes.

Thence they will be banished to an unknown cupboard for all time 4. Thou shalt not refuse a fourth helping of sprouts and turkey, be thou ever so full 5. Thou shalt drink spirits.

It’s the last one that is interesting. Why on earth should most people drink strong liqueurs at Christmas, and at no other time in their lives? It’s certainly not enshrined in the scripts – for instance, who could imagine the three wise men bringing a bottle of Bells along rather than exotic gifts (definitely not obtained from Lakeland)?

But there’s little doubt that this national oddity happens every year.

At one end of the scale, there is the torrent of Baileys and Malibu that always get the mad aunts kicking over the traces at Yuletide.

At the other, there are rare, refined and expensive malt whiskies and cognacs that are the province of the connoisseur.

In between, there is a selection of tipples varying from the fine and sought after to the downright eccentric. Here are a few to get you in the mood.

O’Donnell Sticky Toffee Moonshine £25 Made by passing through slowly melted sugar, this is one for the really sweet tooth.

Deadhead Monkey Chocolate Rum – £66.50 Who wouldn’t be thrilled to have this charming little chap on display on their sitting room? The contents are a mixture of six-year cask-aged rum with roasted cacao beans. Just the thing to brighten up your Christmas morning.

Spirit of Yorkshire Cream Liqueur £25 A bit like Baileys. Only dearer.

Beluga Celebration Vodka £39.50 Beluga Celebration is a Limited Edition release dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the Marinsk Distillery.

The water used in its manufacture is apparently solely from 300m deep wells within Siberia. So it must make a difference.

Laphroaig Ian Hunter Chapter 3 – £975 This 33-year-old Laphroaig Single Malt is the third in the exclusive series commemorating Ian Hunter. A vintage 1987 distillation, fully matured in refill ex-Bourbon barrels, heralding waves of aniseed, peaty and peppery notes, cedar, kumquat zest and gorse flower.

From the Masterchef kitchen to The Barn LUKE RHODES HAS QUICKLY FOUND HIS FEET AT WHIRLOW HALL FARM. HE SPOKE TO RICHARD ABBEY ABOUT THE LAUNCH OF THEIR BISTRO NIGHTS AND MORE. hef Luke Rhodes must feel like he’s on top of the world, both literally and figuratively. He has quickly found his feet at Whirlow Hall Farm’s new cafe, a location which occupies one of the highest spots in the city. On the day of my visit to see him he’s on a high for other reasons too - his first bistro night has just sold out. In one hour and ten minutes.

Luke is head chef at The Barn, a brand new purpose-built space which opened in the summer. If you haven’t yet visited it’s an impressive venue with floor-toceiling windows affording impressive views of the surrounding countryside.

The food ranges from breakfast to brunch and lunch and utilises produce from all over the farm, from livestock and poultry to honey and even the wine grapes, which were being harvested as we spoke.

The reaction to the opening of The Barn has exceeded all initial expectations and there was always the intention to add bistro nights to the offering as well as Sunday lunches, which should be available by the time you read this.

The first event featured a tasting menu of bread and butter, canapes, a celeriac course, scallops, a beef dish, pre-dessert and then Luke’s signature dessert, simply called The Forest.

“It’s literally a forest on a plate,” he says. “It drives me insace but what a dish.

When I did it for a competition, the guy who judged it was my old College lecturer Mick Burke and he said it was one of the best desserts he’d ever had.”

Following the sell-out of the first bistro night, Luke is hoping to host them bi-monthly and throw in a few themed events too.

“I really want to do a Nomadic dining experience where we eat outside,” he adds. “At the top of the farm it’s our woodland area. We’ve got a log company

who work in the top field, we could get them to make us a massive log table with stumps as chairs and cook everything in fire. It would only be for 10-15 people max but we could give them a tasting menu where everything is foraged. I’d love that.”

It all sounds delicious and shows the potential of the farm which must be exciting for any chef.

“It’s a brilliant place to work,” beams Luke. “The potential is limitless really.

We’re trying to keep it as in-house as possible [in terms of produce] but there’s so much we can do. It’s pretty cool that they’ve put the shop in the same building too because people will sit and eat, enjoy it, then go straight into the shop to buy it.”

You may recognise Sheffield-born Luke from last year’s series of Masterchef:The Professionals in which he excelled and made it to the semi-finals. His likeable personality, honesty and let’s be frank, delicious-looking food, were a big hit. I’m sure everyone in Sheffield was rooting for him at the time but this support has carried through into his new venture.

“Since we opened it’s been absolutely barmy,” he says. “And the people that have been coming are the people that are coming back, which says a lot about the experience.”

Masterchef proved to be a lifechanging experience for Luke, although he can’t take the credit for entering.

“My heavily-pregnant wife at the time was sat at home when they’d just put Masterchef: The Professionals on Netflix.

She thought ‘Luke would be good at this’, filled in the application form, which took two hours, sent it off and went from there.”

Luke was shortlisted for the next stage and then received the phonecall to say he’d made the final 32 and was going to be on TV. The timing of filming couldn’t

have been any worse as it started just a week after Jess had given birth.

“It was super hard,” Luke recalls.

“Jess’s mum had to be me at home looking after the little ‘un while I was swanning about in London.

“But it was such an amazing experience and opens so many doors for you, I’d recommend anyone to do it.

Meeting Monica, Marcus and Gregg was immense and I still speak to all the contestants. It’s pretty cool to see that all the people on your series are doing well.”

On the back of his TV appearance, Luke returned to his position of senior sous chef at Halifax Hall before the opportunity at Whirlow Hall Farm arose.

“I’ve done a lot with the farm before, saw the magnitude of it and it looked spot on,” he says. “Kelvin [Charles commercial operations manager at the farm] said they were looking for a head chef and asked if I was interested. I said yes.”

Whilst the bistro nights are sure to be in demand over the coming weeks and months, there’s one thing that Luke really enjoys cooking at The Barn: “I love doing the breakfasts, it’s literally Whirlow on a plate,” he says.

“It’s our eggs, our bacon, our sausage.

Then you can go into the shop and buy it.You can’t say better than that.”

Long regarded as an educational trust and a place to visit with your children, there’s now much more to discover at Whirlow Hall Farm. The Barn has really transformed its foodie offering and the great thing is there’s lots more to come, with Luke at the heart of a lot of it. Just make sure you’re on the ball for those bistro nights or you could be disappointed. Tick, tock.

Howzat! Holmesfield Cricket Club has raised more than £3,000 for St Luke’s Hospice.

The Stuart Huckerby Memorial Cricket Match was played in memory of club member Stuart, who died earlier this year.

Along with Club President Tom Pearson, Stuart had inspired and encouraged young players to take up the game, many of whom still play and recently finished the cricket season by taking the club into the Derbyshire County Cricket League - Second Division.

Covid restrictions meant that Stuart’s family couldn’t give him the send off they would have liked following his death in March so the cricket match was an opportunity for everybody who knew and loved him to raise a glass, share anecdotes and stories and enjoy a match which raised a total of £3,091 for St Luke’s Hospice, where Stuart was a patient.

“We are so pleased that Stuart’s family and friends were able to give him the tribute he deserved,” said St Luke’s Senior Fundraising Manager Clare Collingworth.

“Not only did they have a great time but they also raised a great amount for us, money that will help us to continue providing our services for all the people of Sheffield and their families.”

BY BRADIE PELL, PARTNER AND HEAD OF FAMILY LAW AT GRAYSONS SOLICITORS. ongratulations if you are one of the thousands of people who are at last able to go ahead with your wedding, or properly plan it, following the restrictions and delays resulting from the COVID 19 pandemic.

Planning your wedding day will be a very exciting time for you and you will have a million and one things to do. Not quite so exciting, but equally important, is considering the practical side of marriage – such as money, assets and property. Not as romantic as other wedding issues of course but, as arguments about them are the cause of many marriage breakdowns, agreeing on issues relating to that part of your relationship right from the very beginning can be vital. A prenuptial agreement (or pre-marriage agreement) can help you do this.

You don’t have to be rich and famous for a prenup to be useful to you – despite what many people think. They are an increasingly popular contract for everyday couples, particularly where previous relationships and assets exist, a family business needs protection, one of you has (or stands to inherit) significantly more wealth than the other, or where parents have helped to buy a house and you wish to protect their investment.

There remains a misconception that it’s not worth getting a prenup for fear it won’t be upheld. In reality, however, provided it’s drawn up properly, by someone who knows what they are doing, such as an experienced solicitor, that is simply not true. The prenup should be in writing, signed at least 28 days before the wedding, and you should both have taken legal advice and given full financial disclosure of your assets. It must be voluntary and should be properly negotiated between you, with no pressure on one from the other.

Whilst prenuptial agreements are not, as

yet, legally binding, the courts are taking them into consideration more and more and the Law Commission also recommends that they should be legally binding, provided certain criteria are met.

You can have a prenuptial agreement if you are an opposite sex or same sex couple and are getting married or are entering into a civil partnership.

Partner and head of Graysons’ family department, Bradie Pell, says: “There is certainly a place for prenuptial agreements in our legal system, as long as both parties have full legal advice and are fully aware as to each other’s financial positions.

“Sadly, over 40 per cent of marriages end in divorce and agreeing financial issues can often be prolonged and difficult. A prenuptial agreement can

offer you some control over the division of your assets in the event of divorce, the hope being that it will prevent any unnecessary legal battles and reduce cost.”

The Polo is currently in its sixth generation, and was introduced to the UK market in 1975. More than 18 million have been produced during its 46-year lifespan.

The new range starts at £17,885 OTR with Polo Life and moves into a twopronged structure of comfort-focused Style and sportily-designed R-Line specifications, both priced from £20,785 OTR. The high-performance Polo GTI will arrive at a later date.

Four engine and gearbox configurations are available across the standard Polo line-up – all 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engines, ranging in power output from 80 PS to 110 PS.

New for 2022 A significantly updated version of Mazda’s stylish, spacious and dynamic SUV, the CX-5, goes on sale next year.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 introduces Mi-Drive drive mode selection, enhanced driving dynamics, new styling and stronger grade differentiation, improvements to onboard packaging and practicality, and an expanded range of safety features.

Mi-Drive enables the driver to select the most appropriate drive mode with one touch of a switch. Some model grades equipped with i-Activ AWD further benefit from an Off-Road Mode, which makes driving feel more natural on un-made and slippery surfaces.

Physical improvements include the evolution of the bodyshell, suspension and seats to enhance ride comfort and reduce fatigue. Road noise has also been greatly reduced, particularly when driving on rough surfaces such as gravel.
