Stairkraft

Team stairkraft is looking forward to new and exciting challenges after what has been very testing times for customers and their build projects.

An influx of enquiries with clients expressing their concerns over companies not being able to provide a service including both design and installation under one roof, has put stairkraft at the forefront of bespoke staircase design and installation. The Faux Cantilevered has become a real success, stairkraft has developed this design focusing on reducing installation time which in turn leads to reduced costs without compromising attention to detail.

Williams Electrical

Williams Electrical was established in 1905 by Karen Putland’s greatgrandfather Walter Williams and has been in the heart of Woodseats ever since. Karen represents the fifth generation of the family and she continues to evolve the business, which started out selling bicycles, radios and model railways.

Being a family business, customer service is at the very core of Williams’ success. But there have been challenges along the way. “The war years were a challenge for everyone, and then the three-day working week of the seventies when we had to trade with candles and in near darkness because of the blackouts,” recalls Karen. “The financial crisis of 2008 was a challenging time and changed the retail landscape permanently and then came the pandemic…”

The outlook remains positive; no doubt they will look froward to the challenges of the next 100 years!

INSTRUCT THE RIGHT SOLICITOR TO REPRESENT YOU IN DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS. BY SARAH NEAL OF BEST SOLICITORS.

The breakdown of a marriage is an upsetting time, even when both parties agree that the relationship is over.

The process to end a marriage can be complicated as the division of assets and arrangements for any children are negotiated.

Instructing the right family law solicitor to manage the legal process can alleviate some of the stress to allow both parties to focus on moving on.

Fairly distributing finances, property, and other assets, managing any debts, and reaching an agreement on how, and where children live and spend their time, can be an emotionally charged process.

An experienced family law solicitor

understands that the end of a marriage is a sensitive time. They understand that it can be an unsettling period involving anxiety about what the future may hold.

They will listen to your individual circumstances and will advise on your

legal rights and the steps required to finalise your divorce.

The family law solicitors at Best Solicitors support clients every step of the way. We pride ourselves on guiding clients through the legal process explaining every stage in jargon-free terms.

We understand that the end of a marriage can be emotionally complicated. A divorce is more than legally ending a marriage, we will ensure that your legal rights are protected now, and in the future.

If you are considering getting a divorce, our team are here to help explain the next steps. Find out more about how we can help on our website at www.bestsolicitorsonline.co.uk

Founded by Ian and Mary, the owners of Knab Farm Shop in December 2022, the Sheffield Hamper Company brings together a series of curated hampers full of produce from some of the region’s finest artisan producers. Ian said “since buying Knab Farm Shop in 2021 we have realised how many fabulous artisan food makers there are in Sheffield. We are passionate about supporting local independent producers, so developed the concept of hampers which only contain products made by artisans who have a Sheffield postcode”. Mary says, “the hampers have proved to be a real hit since we launched, they make great presents, we have shipped them to every corner of the UK in the past few months and several businesses have bought them as gifts for staff and clients”.

Precious advice

BUYING A DIAMOND SHOULD BE AN EXCITING AND MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE.

or most people, a diamond is purchased for only the most special occasions such as an engagement or a milestone birthday. It represents both a financial and an emotional commitment and the sparkling piece of jewellery will be treasured forever as a reminder of the important event. It therefore seems obvious that the process of selecting and buying the diamond should itself be an exciting and memorable experience, in addition to being one in which you can feel confident in the choice you are making.

At PA Jewellery we place this dual aim at the heart of how we sell diamonds so that our diamond story becomes a happy chapter in your life too.

The first thing you will notice on visiting PA Jewellery is the welcoming, relaxed atmosphere. We don’t engage in a ‘hard sell’ approach and are happy to let you take your time and make decisions at your own pace. Our friendly staff are here to listen to what you need and try to make that happen. Every customer is different, and your personal diamond story won’t be the same as anyone else.

There is no escaping the fact that diamonds can be complicated. There is seemingly endless information available

on the internet advising on qualities and grades and sometimes pointing the consumer in conflicting directions. Most of us are not experts on diamonds, but we do want to be sure we are making a sensible purchase, especially given the financial and emotional investments involved. It is easy to find information about diamonds, but equally easy to become confused or overwhelmed by the sheer quantity of information out there!

Our knowledgeable and experienced jewellers and gemmologists will help guide you the process of choosing a diamond every step of the way, while striving to ensure the journey is an enjoyable one. Keen to know more? Scan the QR code on the back page to read more about Our Diamond Story.

Email gems@pajewellery.com , call 0114 266 9253 or visit our showroom to start your diamond journey.

High-quality care

RINGINGLOW DENTAL PRACTICE IS A LONG-STANDING FAMILY BUSINESS THAT PRIDES ITSELF ON DELIVERING A FRIENDLY, PERSONABLE SERVICE.

Finding the right dentist is not always easy but is a problem easily solved with a visit to Ringinglow Dental Practice.

The recently refurbished surgery started life as Percival & Burnham over 70 years ago and remains very much a family affair – dental nurse Isabella Burnham is the granddaughter of the practice’s founder – with a long-standing reputation for delivering high-quality dental care in a warm and welcoming environment.

Ringinglow Dental Practice became part of Riverdale Healthcare in August 2022, bringing with it its own identity – this is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution to dentistry but a friendly, personable service that puts you completely at ease.

Dentistry at Ringinglow Dental Practice remains extremely affordable

too, with private consultations starting from just £39.50.

“We’re here to help you achieve a healthy and confident smile with our range of treatments,” said practice manager Kerry Cammidge. “Treatments include general dentistry such as checkups, fillings, root canal and implants, and cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening and veneers. We also offer hygienist appointments.”

Since joining Riverdale Healthcare there has been significant recent investment in the surgery, including a new reception and waiting area, new individual surgeries and improved access to the property.

The sloped driveway, which leads up from Ringinglow Road, brings you to a new entrance and reception area, which is complemented by a light and bright conservatory waiting area. From here, you’re collected by a nurse and taken to one of the surgeries to be consulted by your dentist. One of the surgeries has been given a state-of-the-art makeover with the others due to follow suit shortly.

Riverdale Healthcare has a reputation for continuously providing the best patient experience across its practices, with care delivered by friendly, hightrained teams. At Ringinglow Dental Practice you’ll find six dentists, one therapist and one hygienist as well as a team of nurses who all work together to deliver this exceptional care.

“With their expertise in various areas of dentistry, they strive to ensure the

utmost comfort and satisfaction of their patients,” added Kerry.

“Their friendly and compassionate approach creates a warm and welcoming environment, fostering trust and building long-lasting relationships with those they serve. Patients can trust the team at Ringinglow Dental Practice for comprehensive dental solutions delivered with precision and care.”

Riverdale Healthcare’s ethos is centred around three core values: We care about people; We practice with integrity; and we like different.

“It’s about having a ‘can-do’ attitude and delivering outstanding care to the people in our communities to live life with confident and happy smiles,” said Kerry. “We are open and honest and always act with integrity.”

This is certainly backed up by the abundance of positive Google reviews.

“I have been attending the practice for many years now as have my family,” said one happy patient. “I have always received excellent treatment from my dentist and very friendly helpful staff.”

Why Sharrowvale is the place to be

WHAT MAKES THIS LITTLE CORNER OF SOUTH-WEST SHEFFIELD SO ATTRACTIVE? MOLLY ROWE-TOWLE REPORTS.

SHARROWVALE
72 www.sheffieldvibe.com

estled behind the busier Ecclessall road, and just a ten-minute bus journey from the city centre, Sharrowvale Road is an eclectic and charming hub where foodies, antique lovers and gallery enthusiasts can rejoice. The street is full to the brim with independent shops, cafes, restaurants and galleries. There’s something for everyone!

What’s more Sharrowvale is just a short walk from the picturesque Endcliffe park where you can feed the ducks or relax with an ice cream. Or you could walk a few minutes in the opposite direction towards the leafy suburb of Nether edge, where you can stroll the wide tree lined streets or visit the secluded Chelsea park.

Despite it being a popular area house prices on the street remain reasonable, averaging £168,000 this year which is lower than the Sheffield average. So, Sharrowvale is a great place to move especially if you have children as it is surrounded by great primary schools and a range of Sheffield’s best secondarys.

What to do on Sharrowvale Road:

Sharrowvale Market

Three times a year the street closes its doors to cars and welcomes in a plethora of stalls that make up the popular Sharrowvale Market. The market is the perfect way to spend a day as you can stroll for hours looking at the multitude of goods whether it be local produce, hot food, plants, clothing, crafts and even buskers. The next market will be held on 26 November.

Galleries and Antiques

A trip to Sharrowvale is not complete without visiting one of the several galleries or antique shops on or

surrounding the road. Peruse the textiles, artwork and photography at the Silk Road Gallery. Or mooch around the popular Gilbert and Sons antique store which has floors of hidden gems.

Eat and Drink

Sharrowvale has some of our favourite places to eat and drink. The Greedy Greek Deli has a vast menu of authentic Greek cuisine – think Greek salad, gyros and souvlaki. A little further up the road there is vegetarian diner Pom as well as the new Tonco bakery, which is a perfect spot for a morning coffee or a delicious and organic lunch. And don’t forget to pop into the the Lescar and Porter Cottage for a drink.

Courtyard shopping and more

If you want to escape the sometimesbusy main road Dyson Place is the perfect spot. The courtyard, which is open seven days a week, is full of independent eateries, shops and other amenities. For instance, there is the Cornerstone restaurant and bar, Pellizco, Iberico, sports shop Club Racket and hair salons Nook and Rapscallions.

G&M Healthcare

Dr Grace Hula set up G&M Healthcare Ltd just under ten years ago with the aim of making her patients feel better about themselves, whether that’s through skin or body treatments or a lifestyle-changing diet regime. After experiencing the success of Alizonne Therapy first-hand, she decided to take things one-step further and devised her own diet called MediSculpt Therapy, a non-surgical, medically supervised rapid weight loss program.

The diet consists of five protein-based meals and one snack a day for seven days a week. In addition to the nutritional part of the diet, MediSculpt Therapy also offers two types of body contouring treatments to tone the body.

Results can be seen almost instantly - the typical female patient will lose one stone a month and a typical male patient one-and-a-half stones a month.

To find out more about MediSculpt Therapy, visit www.gandmhealthcare.co.uk or call 0114 233 5000. You’ll find them on Instagram too – gmhealthcare

Winning recipe

It’s been a winning recipe for over 20 years now… when you are longing for an instant hit of Mediterranean sunshine, head straight for the Greedy Greek.

This friendly, relaxed restaurant has become a fixture on the always-busy Sharrow Vale Road, with its attractive mix of independent shops, restaurants, cafes and takeaways, and it remains as popular as ever.

The reasons? Well for me it’s the food primarily but you can’t take what’s on the plate in isolation. The Greedy Greek experience is all about the relaxed surroundings as much as the delicious delicacies on offer.

Close your eyes for a moment and you could easily be sat in your favourite Greek island taverna, sheltering from the scorching sun and watching sail boats bobbing on the horizon.

This is properly relaxed dining and that means embracing the mezze concept and doing away with the whole ‘starters followed by mains’ format. Just order what you fancy, start tucking in as soon as the first dishes arrive and let everybody share everything.

If you haven’t ordered enough dishes just request a few more… although your main issue will probably be the opposite. Portions are definitely on the generous side.

We ordered half a dozen small plates and one large between two and by the time everything arrived found our table full to overflowing. But there was no rush, where else were we going to go on a close and cloudy Sunday afternoon? Over the course of two hours we ate and chatted and found winning combinations of flavour and texture at every turn.

I’ve heard it suggested that Greek food is “a bit samey” but those lazy stereotypes fail to do justice to the sheer scope and variety of dishes on offer. Spanakorizo (£6.90) was certainly a new one on me – this herby, heavenly mix of spinach, leek, spring onion, feta and risotto rice is a new favourite. Lemon artichokes (£6.90) cooked with olive oil, lemon juice, peas, carrots and leeks came with a real punch of citrus as did the Greek lemon potatoes (£6.90).

We were on more familiar ground with the stuffed peppers (£6.90), bulging with rice, vegetables, herbs and feta and the melitzano salalta (£5.40), a smokes aubergine dip just crying out to be smothered on crisp, toasted pitta bread and scoffed. Bite-sized spanakotyropita, the ever-popular spinach and feta pie, and tyropita, the cheese and egg version (£1.70 each) were crunchy on the outside and packed with deeply savoury fillings.

The centrepiece of our very busy table was the mixed plate meal (£19.50), a chance to sample the best of the various meat dishes on offer. A winning mix of crispy roast pork, juicy meatballs, and a beautifully tender skewer of chicken breast, surrounded by pitta bread, Greek salad, tzatziki and strofilla, it transformed our humble, tavern-style meal into a banquet.

Dessert after that savoury feast? Normally I’d decline but it’s impossible to say no to the classic baklava (£6.50), and the Greedy Greek version, dripping with honey and stuffed with walnut pieces, was one of the best. Along with a slice of the Greek orange cake with filo pastry and orange syrup (£6.50) it rounded off a lovely, leisurely Sunday afternoon perfectly.

Exhibition

Modern Europeans

Until 2 December / Graves Gallery www.sheffieldmuseums.org.uk

This is your last chance to discover work by some of the most talented and distinctive French and British artists of the late 19th and early 20th century. This display, drawn from Sheffield’s collections, celebrates the work of both the well-known and lesser-known artists who were pioneers and protégées of the experimental French art scene centred around Paris.

Impressionist painting was developed in France in the late 19th century by artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Focussing on the landscape and scenes from everyday life, the Impressionists chose to leave their studios, working more spontaneously and capturing the changing colours and light of the outdoors.

Their work influenced British contemporaries such as Walter Sickert and inspired further experimentation by French artists like Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse. Their use of exaggerated colour and simplified shapes characterised the future development of European modern art.

This small display presents work by Vanessa Bell, Paul Cezanne, Roger Fry, PierreAuguste Renoir, Walter Sickert, James Tissot and more.

Make time for Mae

2023 HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE YEAR FOR MAE MULLER. AFTER BEING CHOSEN TO REPRESENT THE UK AT THE 67TH EUROVISION SONG CONTEST IN LIVERPOOL, SHE’S NOW RELEASED HER DEBUT ALBUM. SHE TALKS TO JULES BOYLE.

INTERVIEW
84 www.sheffieldvibe.com
Images courtesy Harry Carr

You’re released your long-awaited debut album, the brilliant Sorry I’m Late. What can you tell us about it?  Some of the songs that are on there I wrote about five years ago, some I wrote only a year ago, so it really shows a real span of how I’ve grown over that period as a woman, as an artist and just as a human being. It was really important to me then, to show a different, more vulnerable side to me on the album.

I’ve built most of my songs on the past on a platform of women empowerment, not taking any sh*t and basically never letting them see you sweat. The other side of that coin though, is actually being really vulnerable and allowing yourself to be hurt, because all these experiences that make us be strong women and strong people, they can come from a place of pain. For a while, I really wanted to hide that, but for this album I really wanted to embrace that vulnerability and show people that I could do the sassy, ‘bad B’ thing, which is an important part of who I am, but it’s just as important to show the other side, so I hope I’ve done that.

I feel like I have though, so that makes me really happy. Women in general, whether it’s in the workplace, in relationships or as mothers, sisters and so on, are meant to be this strong, empowered fixers who are the emotional careers, the ones who hold everything together. There’s a lot of pressure in that, so I think it’s actually really powerful when you can just go ‘I’m not feeling powerful or strong today!’, then you actually come out the other end feeling empowered for being able to do it.

I think we need to stop holding women up to such high expectations. We’re not just the strong statues that can power through anything, we have our moments and that’s alright. So there are a lot of songs on this album that, if you are feeling down or under pressure, you’ll be able to connect with and relate to.

The album’s themes are very personal, but at the same time there’s a universal quality to them at the same time. You’d imagine they’ll really resonate with fans when they hear them?

I really hope so. Being a woman myself, I feel it’s really important that I write music that young women can relate to, but it’s also for anyone that has just been put down in their life. I have so much love for the LGBTQ+ community, because they’ve been so accepting of me,

so it’s really important that they listen to this album and feel accepted too. I wanted it to be an album that everyone can enjoy and feel empowered by. That’s my main aim.

Your single I Wrote A Song was everywhere due to being the UK’s Eurovision entry, but the album must have been finished before you were picked for Eurovision?

The album was done and dusted long before Eurovision. In fact, it was meant to come out a lot sooner, but when that came up, the whole plan had to change. It was a shame, but it was so the right thing to do as so many more people know who I am now. It was actually so perfect, as right after Eurovision, I had an album ready to go!

How much have things changed for you since competing in Eurovision?

Even at the few shows and festivals I’ve done since then, it feels like there’s more of an audience there, there’s more support and just more people knowing who I am, which can only be a good thing.

Did seeing all that high-end production first hand give you any inspiration for your own live shows? It was all on such a huge scale, but I was

definitely inspired by the choreography that I saw there, so I want to have the freedom to do more of that. My stage style is actually very different to Eurovision, as I love to chat and have audience interaction, as in I like my shows to almost feel like you’re in your front room with your mates, but I’m definitely looking forward to bringing some of that more polished choreography into the mix.

The people that do know you though, seem to really, really adore you and it looks very much that the feeling is mutual, would that be right?  Without your fans, you’ve got nothing, absolutely nothing. Some people think record labels and maybe artists run this sh*t, but it’s the fans. Without them, nobody at the record labels would have a job! Nobody would be able to do this thing that we all love without them. So I think it’s really important that you respect them, but also personally, I feel very, very close to my fans. I’m very protective of them and of course I’m very grateful to all of them, as their support over the years has always been incredible, so I try really hard to have a close relationship with them. They mean the world to me.

Debut album ‘Sorry I’m Late’ is out now.

unique converted Wesleyan chapel in vibrant Camden Town is helping transform the tourism potential of one of London’s up-and-coming boroughs in its first six months since opening.

After a £9million investment and two-year build, The Wesley Camden Town opened to widespread acclaim at the start of the year, and after six months of trading, we can already see the buzz it has brought to uber-trendy Camden Town.

The Wesley Camden Town is the first UK sister property to The Wesley Euston, the popular hotel near Euston Station which was recognised as “the UK’s first ethical hotel” some ten years ago. The Wesley Camden Town property has the same high level of eco-credentials as its big sister at Euston and is already a popular amenity within the local Camden community for visiting friends, relatives and business travellers. Whilst it is ideally situated away from the noise and commotion which many more central, more expensive hotels have, you can still be in Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus or Covent Garden in less than 20 minutes.

And within a few minutes’ walk from The Wesley Camden Town are a wide range of popular attractions and venues to visit including the world-famous Camden Lock Market, Regent’s Canal, Koko and Roundhouse music venues, Regent’s Park, London Zoo and that perennial favourite amongst UK and international travellers to London, Madame Tussauds. The hotel is also expected to be especially popular

with rail travellers from the north and Midlands, and also with travellers using Eurostar out of nearby St Pancras.

The Wesley Camden Town itself is located just off Camden High Street, and less than 400 metres from Mornington Crescent tube (just one stop north of Euston). On the nearby High Street, hotel guests will find a wide selection of restaurants with British and international cuisine, or you may want to head over to sister hotel The Wesley Euston and its vibrant Wesley Bar & Kitchen for dinner and a drink.

The Wesley Camden Town has 38 bedrooms over four floors of the sympathetically designed converted chapel which dates back to 1824, including “Classic”, “Superior” and “Wesley Collection” rooms. Prices vary per night and are from less than £150 for a double en-suite room with Queen size bed, luxury toiletries, smart TV, climate control and free WiFi. There’s a ten per cent discount for direct bookings made on the hotel’s website – www.thewesley.co.uk – and forward bookings for events like London’s Christmas lights, the capital’s New Year’s Eve celebrations and even the recently-announced Taylor Swift concerts next year, are already very strong.

Who’s in the running?

t’s been billed as the ‘biggest culinary event of the year’ and now we’re only weeks away from finding out who will be taking the honours at this year’s Westside & Southside Bar & Restaurant Awards.

This year’s event will be once again held at the OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing – which has proved to be a big hit with our guests for the last couple of years.

The OEC is an ultra-modern and exciting venue, making it the perfect spot for large-scale parties, weddings and celebrations of all kinds. So, of course, it’s ideal for the local restaurant world’s biggest and glitziest celebration night!

Our annual awards dinner, which takes place on Monday 30 October, is a highlight of the calendar for everyone in the restaurant business. Along with Westside’s yearly printed guide to the regional dining out scene, which appeared in our June magazine, it is part of our commitment to helping you find the best.

For chefs and restaurateurs across

the region, being singled out for praise in the Westside & Southside Awards is a sure sign that they are hitting all the right culinary notes.

The winners of all categories, including the coveted Restaurant of the Year title, will be announced on the night. As this issue goes to press, our judges are doing their final assessments of the region’s finest restaurants, and are about to make their decisions in the various categories.

As well as our usual list of awards, we will be announcing the winner of our ‘Young Chef of the Year’ competition and there will also be some special awards for ‘Out of Town’ restaurants, which will also be revealed on 30 October.

We’ll be tweeting the results on the night and there will, of course, be a full report in next month’s Westside. Meanwhile, on the next page is a list of who is in contention for the main awards.

Good luck to all the restaurants shortlisted.

And you can be there too…

The Westside & Southside Restaurant and Bar Awards has grown over the years into one of the highlights of the social calendar and this year’s event promises to be the biggest and best yet.

By hosting the event at the OEC, we have room to expand and increase the number of people in the room on the night. And this means we can invite readers to come along and enjoy some fantastic food and drink and share in the excitement as we reveal the 2023 winners.

If you would like to attend, even treat your team to an early Christmas party, tickets are priced £60+VAT each or you can purchase a table for ten for £550+VAT. Email john.murphy@rmcmedia.co.uk for further details.

High expectations

SUNDAY

Word of mouth recommendations are important to any business but can really make a difference in hospitality, where a good review can drive people to your business in their droves.

We like to think that we do our bit here at Westside but it was only a few weeks ago that I was talking to someone very well respected within the industry who recommended the Sunday lunches at The Bistro at Dunston Hall Garden Centre.

So it was with great anticipation that we headed to this picturesque part of Chesterfield to see if this high praise was indeed justified.

The Bistro at Dunston Hall Garden Centre is a large, airy and thoroughly modern dining space with a contemporary tiled floor, wooden chairs and tables, smart exposed brickwork and a relaxed, buzzing atmosphere helped in no small degree by a team of friendly, enthusiastic staff who ensure service is never slack.

Sunday lunch is clearly a popular option with many of the tables taken as we arrived for our afternoon feast.

The a la carte menu features the option of three starters and three desserts with roast dinners

complemented by offerings of burger, fish and chips as well as vegetarian choices.

A traditional roast was definitely on our agenda with diners being able to choose from beef, pork or gammon, although there is an option of having all three on a ‘butcher’s board’. All meat is sourced from nearby Highfield House Farm and comes with roast potatoes, honey roasted carrots and parsnips, creamed cabbage and pancetta, seasonal greens and a Yorkshire pudding.

But first starters. My wife opted for a crayfish and salmon cocktail (£7.50), which was served with marie rose and baby gem lettuce, whilst I chose ham hock and cheddar croquettes (£6.50) served with parmesan cream and watercress. Both were excellent, delivering on both flavour and finesse and were quickly devoured.

On to the main event and we chose loin of pork and honey and mustard glazed gammon (both £16.95) as well as a side dish of cauliflower cheese (£3.95). When our plates arrived the first thing we noticed was the size of our Yorkshire puddings (huge) but loved all the different elements of the dish – crisp roasties, sweet carrots and parsnips and the cabbage was delicious too. I loved

my thick slice of gammon which had subtle sweet and spicy flavours courtesy of the honey and mustard whilst the well-cooked pork was complemented by stuffing and crackling.

As good as it was, given the size of the portions we struggled to finish every last mouthful but wanted to leave room for dessert, although we had to share.

We were glad we did.

The sticky toffee pudding (£6) was sweet and sticky and the perfect way to end the meal. A coffee (flat white, £2.85) and tea (Egyptian mint, £2.80) concluded our pleasant afternoon. We were seriously impressed by the quality of food on offer. Our high expectations were fulfilled and then some. Dunston Hall Garden Centre &

The event, The River to River Charity Challenge, saw 48 runners choose a distance from a choice of 4, 10, 15 or 22 miles. Making their way to their starting points, they then navigated their way back home to the River Don after are taking in glorious miles of gorgeous views. All of the routes connected with each other and were a mix of terrain from technical uphill climbs like Stanage Edge to easier paved country lanes.

Beverley Torrance, who ran the 10 miles from Wyming Brook, said the best thing about the event was ‘the chat and the support of the ladies with you’.

Gina Quant, having run her first ever 10 miles, said, for her, it was about ‘feeling the fear and doing it anyway’.

As it was a distance rather than a timed challenge, runners like Catherine Askham, who ran the 4-mile option from Loxley Common, enjoyed the ‘relaxed, chatty’ nature of the run with ‘encouraging support and no pressure on the time to complete’.

The ladies-only running club which prides itself on its friendliness and inclusivity, is made up of runners ranging from seasoned veterans of the sport who regularly run ultra marathons to those just completing their first Couch to 5K.

“The event was really about bringing everyone together, challenging ourselves and having a good time raising money for a good cause,” said Katie Alexander, one of the club’s run leaders who ran the 22-mile option from the River Noe in Edale.

The runners finished with a warm welcome of homemade cakes and celebratory fizz, sipped from specially commissioned mugs made for the event by a local potter.

As it was so successful, the organisers are considering running the event again next year.

Destination Wortley

y recent visit to the Wortley Arms coincided with the first sustained good weather of the year – sunshine, blue skies and the perfect time to sit out in a beer garden with a drink and a bit to eat.

The Wortley Arms, which straddles the borders of Sheffield and Barnsley, has plentiful outdoor spaces to soak up the sun but with a long-held reputation for being a ‘foodie’ pub, you’d be foolish not to step through its revolving doors and enjoy some fine food and ales in relaxed, comfortable surroundings. It’s cool dining areas can provide welcome respite from the heat too.

I’d brought the family along and owner Jamie Ellis showed us to a window table in the snug area of the pub. Décor has a contemporary slant but the building still retains much of its heritage with exposed stone walls, beamed ceilings and wooden panelling. Black and white photos give a further nod to the area’s history.

With a reputation such as the Wortley’s the menu offers of lots of pub classics – fish ‘n’ chips, burger, steak –but with dishes that elevate things just that little further – chicken thigh ballotine, dressed asparagus, Moroccan

spiced lamb. There are a few Asian influences too in the form of king prawn cakes, crispy chicken katsu curry and tandoori onion bhaji burger.

There’s no kids menu as such but the chefs can serve smaller portions of many of the dishes – my children both chose the Wortley Arms burger, which came with smoked bacon, Monterey Jack cheese, onion rings and twice-cooked chips. “Ten out of ten,” was my son’s verdict.

My wife and I both leaned towards the more ‘gastro’ part of the menu and started with pork and apple scotch egg (£8.50) and tempura cauliflower (£8) dishes. The scotch egg, served with a celeriac remoulade and Dijon mayonnaise, was meaty with a hint of sweetness and had a just runny yolk. The three sizeable florets of cauliflower were deliciously crisp on the outside and cooked through in the middle and given a kick of heat from the accompanying gochujang sauce.

Main courses continued the high standards and my butter baked cod, served with braised hispi cabbage, smoked bacon, mussels and saffron cream (£19) was a real stand-out dish. The cod, cooked with the skin on, was just perfect and paired so well with an incredibly more-ish sauce that was sweet,

salty and creamy all at once.

Across the table my wife had chosen a meat and potato pie (£16) from the specials menu, which was presented in its own dish and served with twice-cooked chips, mushy peas and gravy. This was proper comfort food.

It’s worth noting that portions are on the generous size and although my wife and I couldn’t find room for dessert, my children (unsurprisingly) did and shared a double chocolate brownie with whipped white chocolate, salted caramel jelly and caramelised white chocolate (£7). It made for a fitting end to what was an excellent meal.

The Wortley Arms is a real destination venue – I can highly recommend a visit, whatever the weather.

THE NEWLY-OPENED CANON MEDICAL ARENA IS THE UK’S FIRST CARBON-NEUTRAL BUILT COMMUNITY ARENA AND WILL BE THE HOME OF SHEFFIELD BASKETBALL – AND MUCH MORE. BY RICHARD

SPORT
108 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Sheffield has a new home for basketball. The Canon Medical Arena opened to great fanfare last month and will become the permanent home for the B. Braun Sheffield Sharks and B. Braun Sheffield Hatters as well as community groups including Dronfield Netball Club.

What’s more, the innovative multipurpose arena will also house a world-leading medical and diagnostic centre, which will provide access to elite and community athletes and support the NHS’s need for further diagnostic capacity for our communities.

The Canon Medical Arena forms part of the Olympic Legacy Park (OLP) in Attercliffe, which opened in 2015 with the aim of improving physical and mental health, and wellbeing as well as harnessing the power of research and innovation to deliver positive change. Like the OLP, the new arena is open to everyone, from grassroots right through to elite status.

Sarah Backovic is the managing director at Sharks Basketball Ltd and is excited to be finally in the arena, which will be able to accommodate unto 2,500 spectators for British Basketball League (BBL) games. Here,

she tells us more about the move and what visitors to the arena can expect.

You must be excited to have finally moved in?

We’re so excited to be finally in. Even though the last 12 months have been extremely busy, actually settling into our own facility has been the most satisfying achievement of our careers. We can’t wait to welcome people to see the final product of our efforts.

How long has the arena been in development?

The arena has been a ten-year overnight success! The moment we

SPORT
www.sheffieldvibe.com 109

made the decision that our whole future of the Sharks and Hatters and the future of the sport would rely on a dedicated facility, we have been devoted to the cause. The road has had a number of twists and turns but the enormous support of Canon Medical Systems helped steady the journey and we have finally arrived.

And it’s the UK’s first carbon-neutral built community arena?

The project has primarily been managed by the Canon team and supported by our team on the ground. It was a key factor to Canon Medical Systems (CMS) that every effort was made to reduce the carbon footprint in the process of the build. This is a core principal of any build activity when they (CMS) install medical diagnostic machines around the UK, therefore it was always part of the planning.

Tell us about the partnership with Canon Medical?

Our association with Canon Medical began via their support of community project Respect. This very important

project works with young people disengaged with school or on the verge of gang-related activity. This diversionary project uses the professional players as mentors to support the participants, many through personal experience, and help them understand their environment and encourage a more positive focus

providing learning tools for ongoing support.

How much input did the Sheffield Sharks have with the design?

The Sharks were the inspiration for the design, Sheffield based Bond Bryan architects embedded the feel of a shark

SPORT
110 www.sheffieldvibe.com

in its design concept with a practical delivery capability.

Who else will be using the arena?

Aside from the Sharks and Hatters premier teams, there will also be availability from the junior programmes. In addition, we have regular tenants from Dronfield Netball Club and the University of Sheffield Bucs programme. We also have time set aside to support the local community and their young people in basketball activity. In the end it is an event venue so that will lend to hosting in association with Sheffield City Trust existing venues, ranging from dinners to boxing and other indoor sports.

How does the arena fit into the dynamic of the Olympic Legacy Park?

The ethos of the OLP is health and wellbeing, incorporating research, AI and technology development. We are there to support the Park with provision of the end game. All the work within the OLP is designed to improve the lives of the country and encourage healthy lifestyles leading to the prevention of pressure on our health service. The Arena and our neighbours at the Community Stadium provide the field of participation through sport and social interaction both key to engaging our communities.

And there’s an on-site classroom. How will this be used?

The classroom is an essential part of our community programmes, whereby we use the vehicle of basketball to engage with young people and provide an out of school environment to improve learning. There are a number of programmes included like B Healthy B Braun, vocational study support and the Respect project. All these programmes will see school age children interact with the Sharks and Hatters and our teacher Sarah, to help improve attitudes, confidence and ability to learn leading to better outcomes in life.

The new classroom facility can host up to 16 students as part of its reengagement and study support activities. To date the sum of the combined projects have annually benefited over 4,000 students since their inception and these are to be expanded as further opportunities are developed with Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park.

Tell us about the Medical Diagnostic Centre.

The rear entrance of the Arena hosts the diagnostic facility. This will support

professional athletes at a very high level with the latest in technology for precision diagnostics and reduce injury time by defining treatments that will optimise recovery time and keep athletes on the track, court or pitch as required. It will also be able to support the NHS cope with the backlog of waiting times for diagnostics which we know since the pandemic is essential.

Access and control of the Medical Diagnostic Centre will be managed by LivingCare, who will be responsible for all imaging and diagnostic services, supporting athletes of all abilities and NHS patients in its determination to increase patient access to health screening and disease prevention in the region.

The Medical Diagnostic Centre will feature Canon Medical imaging systems including AI-assisted CT and MRI, diagnostic ultrasound, digital X-ray, fluoroscopy and include consulting rooms and minor surgery operating theatre. The quality and specification of the equipment, coupled with the AI-led

analysis within the facility will play a critical role.

Mark Hitchman, Managing Director, Canon Medical Systems UK said: “The Canon Medical Arena is a pioneering carbon-neutral built sports, healthcare, and community facility with the aim of increasing affordable access to sports and community events.

“As well as providing a home for the B. Braun Sheffield Sharks and B. Braun Sheffield Hatters basketball, the Medical Diagnostic Centre will play a part in expanding healthcare capacity for local people with advanced healthcare facilities featuring the latest Canon Medical innovations. It will also be a hub for our research and development teams working in cooperation with neighbouring academia developing healthcare innovations for the future.”

Sarah Williams, Director of Patient Safety at LivingCare added: “LivingCare are proud to be bringing health care services to Sheffield in the Canon Medical Arena. This will not only will be an opportunity to improve the health of the community, but also create job opportunities and play a part in creating the medical workforces of the future through established links with the colleges and universities.”

Whilst all focus is on the new arena, the OLP will continue to develop over the coming year, benefiting not just those that use the facilities but the wider area too.

“Our focus right now is to make the Arena and Medical Diagnostic Centre a thriving success and an asset to the OLP, the community of Darnall and the basketball fraternity,” concluded Sarah Backovic. “We are very proud and grateful to Canon Medical for believing in us.”

New Community barge gets royal sail of approval

Walkers on the Sheffield and Tinsley canal towpath were astonished recently to see HRH, The Princess Royal, steering a 57 feet long barge into Sheffield city centre. Princess Anne had flown in by helicopter to view the work of the Ethel Trust, an award-winning charity, providing day and residential waterways experiences for disadvantaged groups in South Yorkshire.

With barges based in Sheffield and Thorne, near Doncaster, the Trust was celebrating the arrival of their brand new ‘state of the art’ community barge, called ‘Pearl’. Having viewed the advanced technology on the boat, including a hybrid engine assisted by solar panels, Her Royal Highness, an accomplished sailor, took over the steering from the skipper for the return trip into Victoria Quays.

Back on shore, Princess Anne generously took time to talk to every one of the Trust’s volunteers individually, before officially naming the barge by unveiling a commemorative plaque.

The Ethel Trust is currently recruiting new volunteers, and if you can spare 2 days per month, then check out the Trust’s website www.etheltrust.co.uk or email ethelbarge@gmail.com for more details. No boating experience is required as full training will be provided.

Eligible young people should be aged between 16 and 25, be either homeless ora at risk of homelessness and be either a college or sixth form student, with a clear, realistic intention of moving on to university.

They should be able to thrive in a self-contained property with no on-site staff support and have an income from work or benefits.

Celebrating women in business

The Dore Bar and Grill is set to revamp its offering, with an experienced motherdaughter management team at the helm.

General manager Rebecca Aitken and her daughter Mollie are set to lead The Dore into a promising future, introducing a new two-course, Monday to Friday £14.95 lunch menu, new seasonal specials, and a calendar of events. The venue provides all-day casual dining across the bar, restaurant, and outside terrace area - with the menu featuring Italian-inspired and classic dishes with a good range of wines, spirits, beers and cocktails. The on-site coffee shop is open from 8.30 am with both businesses operating seven days a week.

“My vision is for the team to deliver exceptional hospitality whilst creating an upbeat, atmospheric vibe,” shared Rebecca Aitken, the driving force behind the restaurant’s new era.

“The feedback from everyone is that The Dore is a unique but welcoming experience for not only Dore locals, but customers pouring in from all over Sheffield and the nearby Peak District to sample our new menus.”

Marva keeps smiling

If you’re going to take on the challenge of descending down one of Sheffield’s tallest buildings the hard way, you’d may as well do it with a smile!

St Luke’s Hospice raised in excess £11,000 with a sponsored abseil down the side of Sheffield Hallam University’s Owen Building.

More than 20 intrepid adventurers had signed up for the 12storey drop, with Marva Thorp clearly more than happy to be the last person to get into harness and head for the ground.

Marva, who lives in Crookes, is a keen St Luke’s supporter, who has taken on several challenges in memory of mum Louise, who was a St Luke’s patient.

“Marva’s fantastic high spirits really captured the mood of a great day,” said event organiser Gemma Lancaster.

“Even the people who said they didn’t really like heights thoroughly enjoyed the experience and most of them would happily have gone straight back up and done it again if they could. It was such a successful day that we’re already planning our next date for May 2024 so look out for details of how to join us.”

Whistleblowing performance

Steve Mather isn’t cracking the whip as he takes to the stage at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre…but he will be indulging in a spot of whistleblowing!

And just to make sure his performance hits just the right note, he’s even bringing in his own whistle!

Steve plays the Ringmaster in STOS Theatre Company’s revival of classic circus musical Barnum, which runs at the Lyceum from 14-18 November.

But although he doesn’t get to use the classic Ringmaster’s whip, he’ll be making his presence more than felt with a good loud blast on the whistle that takes him right back to his early days as a teacher.

Broadway and West End classic Barnum is the story of 19th century circus superstar and showbiz pioneer Phineas Taylor Barnum, the man who took the hard sell and turned it into a spectacular display of showmanship that took audiences by storm. The STOS production is directed by Jill Beckett, assisted by Mark Harris, with musical direction by Anna Wright and choreography by Claire Harriott.

Charity fundraising challenge

S.Anselm’s school in Bakewell has led the charge in a charity fundraising campaign, which to date has raised over £25,000 for the Rob Burrow Centre Appeal.

The challenge, which set out to raise £10,000 came about following the diagnosis of Dr Louise

Jordan, widely known across north Derbyshire for her work as a doctor - and as the star of the BBC documentary, The Real Peak Practice, which was filmed in 2017.

A hugely active and popular member within the local community, many of Louise’s friends and associates came together to support a fundraising mission for her chosen charity, the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease (MND), part of the Leeds Hospital Trust.

The challenge saw pupils from S.Anselm’s host various sponsored activities including a ‘Walk the Equator’ challenge, which clocked up over 14,000 km miles collectively from across the school.

To further boost the fundraising events a team of 14 adults to include parents and teachers from S.Anslem’s, St Anne’s in Bakewell and St Peter’s & St Paul’s in Chesterfield set out to walk the National Three Peaks, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in just 24 hours.

To date the challenge has raised over £25,000.

The theme of this year’s concert is Heroes and Villains, offering a full programme of hit songs from Hollywood, Broadway and West End classics, along with a selection of numbers from more recent shows, all directed by Maddie Stones and Lucy Mulvihill, with musical direction by Adam Walker.

The concert, which also includes traditional interval pie and peas or hot roast pork sandwiches, is performed on Saturday November 4 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm and Sunday November 5 at 2.30pm.

Tickets cost £18 with food or £12 for the concert only and can be booked by calling 0114 2644803 or 07534 707079 or emailing: tickets@woodseatsmtc.co.uk

A glittering reputation

LOOKING

FOR THE HIGHEST STANDARDS IN CHILDCARE?

he Old School House Nursery has been a much-loved part of the local scene for more than 30 years and continues to grow from strength to strength.

That’s why they recently received national recognition in the shape of an Investors in People Platinum Award –one of but a few nurseries in the entire country to achieve this coveted accolade. It reflects a determination to be at the forefront of childcare and development.

And yet the nursery’s success has been built on three simple principles – Safe, Happy And Learning. It’s a formula that has found favour with children and parents alike for those three decades.

The Crosspool Nursery School opened in 1990 and was later followed by the opening of their Endcliffe site in 2009.

The Old School House Nursery has forged a reputation as a leader in childcare provision, providing wraparound care and a plethora of

activities for children aged three months to five years old to match the needs of busy parents seeking a stimulating and loving environment for their children.

“Our staff have a wealth of experience in child care,” says principal Stephanie Connelly. “We’ve seen a lot of changes over the years. We first opened our doors as a nursery school for ages 2-5, then in 2000 we added a specialist Baby Unit.

"We provide an excellent foundation for children to go to school and beyond. Many of our pre-school children even come back to work for us."

Nursery opening hours are from 7.30am to 6.30pm, in addition to providing breakfast, after school, holiday and French clubs for children up to 11 years of age. The nursery also benefits from Early Years teachers with specialists in music, French and short tennis.

All of their meals are home-cooked, with ingredients sourced from local suppliers and any dietary requirements requested by parents can be catered for in order to meet their children’s needs.

The nurseries have spacious rooms and extensive playgrounds, as well as a mud kitchen for children to explore. Forest schools were also introduced in 2015 and have been a resounding success.

“It’s important, especially with parents working, that children have the chance to be in touch with the environment,”

continues Stephanie. “Our staff are trained to deliver classes in numeracy and literacy outside. It’s also a great environment for children’s imaginations to grow.”

The Old School House Nursery not only helps to nurture its children, but its members of staff too. They are a registered CACHE training centre, offering training up to levels 2, 3 and 4 in childcare, with the majority of their staff also having first aid training. They also provide NQT training for newly qualified teachers to complete their qualification.

Furthermore, they promote fundamental British values (according to Ofsted) such as democracy, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith.

If you think your child could benefit from spending their pre-school years at one of The Old School House Nursery’s two Nursery Schools, contact them now to arrange a visit.

MORE PENSION CHANGES COMING 2024 PENSION DEATH BENEFITS AND WHAT WE KNOW NOW

With the lifetime allowance consigned to history after April 2024, attention is turning to how the new pension rules will operate and how this might affect retirement advice.

Big changes are planned for the taxation of pension death benefits.

HMRC have issued draft legislation containing new allowances which cap the amount of lump sums which can be paid tax free.

They also plan to tax income from inherited drawdown and annuities purchased from funds where the member died before age 75.

It’s vital that you nominate the correct beneficiaries on your pensions and regularly revisit them to ensure your money

goes to the correct people.

You should also make sure that you are in a contract that can provide all of the flexible options for taking death benefits. There are still gaps in the new proposals but we will keep you updated on how things eventually pan out.

The removal of the lifetime allowance also allows people to reconsider whether they should now pay more money into Pensions. Now is a good time to review your existing plans and will ensure that you are ready for the changes as and when they come.

If you would like to review your current position, contact one of our pension specialists who can guide you through the pensions maze.

IS VOLKSWAGEN’S ‘GTI’ ABOUT TO GET THE ELECTRIC TREATMENT? ASKS RICHARD ABBEY.

Electric GTI

At the recent Munich international motor show, Volkswagen confirmed that they will launch 11 new all-electric models in the next four years, including sporty and emotive GTI versions of selected models from the all-electric ID. family.

The ID. GTI Concept show car presented for the first time in Munich provides a concrete insight into how Volkswagen will transport the iconic GTI label into the electric future.

“The perfect combination of driving pleasure and everyday usability – that is what the three letters GTI have meant for decades,” says Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars.

“With the ID. GTI Concept, we are taking the GTI DNA into the electric age. It remains sporty, iconic, technologically progressive and accessible, but now with a new interpretation for tomorrow’s world.”

Next generation

Companion to the recently introduced Coupe, the new Aston Martin DB12 Volante combines spectacular Super Tourer performance and handling with the irresistible sensory thrills of roofdown driving.

Developed in parallel with its Coupe stablemate, DB12 Volante boasts the same game-changing design, engineering and technology advances made by this latest evolution of Aston Martin’s most distinguished nameplate.

The Volante’s performance credentials speak for themselves. Best-in-class potency from its 4.0 Twin-Turbo V8 engine endows DB12 Volante with formidable performance and a fabulous soundtrack. Tuned by Aston Martin engineers to deliver class-leading 680PS/671bhp at 6000rpm and 800Nm/590lb ft between 2750-6000rpm, this exceptional hand-built engine features modified cam profiles, optimised compression ratios, larger turbos, and increased cooling to achieve an increase in output of 34 per cent compared with the DB11.

Giant steps

Also unveiled in Munich was the all-new MINI Countryman, offered for the first time with choice of a fully electric or combustion engine.

Now in its third generation, the largest member of the MINI family has grown in stature, gaining six centimetres in height and 13 centimetres in length.

The first all-electric Countryman mark’s a pivotal step on MINI’s journey towards becoming an all-electric brand.

The all-electric MINI Countryman is offered in two performance levels – _E and SE ALL4 with, the combustion powered Countryman available in three levels – _C, S ALL4 and JCW ALL4 model. Customers in the UK have the choice of three highly specified trims: Classic, Exclusive and Sport. The new MINI Countryman is priced from £28,500 RRP, with first deliveries taking place in February 2024.

Elevate your house to a home with Nest

hoosing the lighting, furniture and soft furnishings for your home is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding tasks. It provides the opportunity for owners and renters alike to put their own personal style stamp on a property, and to officially elevate it from a house to home status.

And while finding just the right mix of practical yet stylish statement items can prove challenging, if done right it can provide a living space that allows us to live comfortably, work efficiently, as well as entertaining friends.

From cushions to chandeliers and candles to cabinets, through to beds and bathroom accessories, the designs that we choose provide our guests with a little insight into who we are, and what we love.

For those of us living in Sheffield, there is probably no better place to find our forever furniture pieces, or to seek inspiration for our own properties, than at Nest’s stunning new dedicated design destination at Park Hill.

Spanning an impressive 3,500 sq. ft, and boasting an outdoor front and rear terrace, with the interior having been designed by the internationally acclaimed interior designer Harriet Paterson, the

showroom is every bit as impressive as the furniture on display.

The design incorporates a purposebuilt staircase, sympathetic to the space with an industrial style, perforated folded steel softened with natural oak treads.

For staff and customers, a sleek and compact open-plan kitchen area also features.

Walking through the fully glass front entrance, visitors are immediately welcomed by one of the expert customer service style gurus, and greeted with the smell of freshly brewed coffee. Take just a few more steps in, and you can try out one of the many beautiful chairs, sofas, bed or stools available to touch, feel and experience.

Commenting on the showroom and the furniture on display, Toni Anne Dunleavy, Managing Director, Nest, said: “Perhaps I am biased because of where I work, but I would argue that there are few things in life more enjoyable than designing a home that reflects who we are, and where we feel comfortable and safe.

“Every piece of furniture, every lighting choice, and all of the soft furnishings and accessories that we choose can really add to that ambiance,

so while many of our customers opt to shop online, others relish the in-person experience, and they like to come into our showroom to look and feel and seek inspiration before they buy.”

Toni adds that as Nest partners with designers who create beautiful design pieces that are stylish, inspirational, and built to last, it was really important to the team that the showroom reflected that ethos.

She added: “We wanted to create a space where people could make themselves at home, and Park Hill provided us with the perfect space.

“The building itself is a truly iconic staple on the city’s skyline, it’s thought provoking, and it holds a special place in the hearts of the people that own it and use it.

“Much of what we sell invokes a similar reaction, so it was the perfect place to call home.”

Toni Anne Dunleavy is the Managing Director at luxury furniture, lighting and homeware experts Nest.co.uk Ltd. The new design showroom at the iconic Park Hill development is open Monday to Saturday: 10am to 4pm (Closed Sundays and Bank Holidays).
