Distance No Object WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND JOHN BURKHILL’S FAMOUS PRAM? THE LOCAL LEGEND REVEALS ALL IN A NEW BOOK THAT IS RAISING MONEY FOR A CHARITY CLOSE TO HIS HEART, MACMILLAN. o doubt you’ve seen him. You’ve probably even read about him. But you’ve never heard his incredible, inspiring story told all in his own words – until now. Yes, John Burkhill – Sheffield’s famous ‘mad man with the pram’ – has penned his long-awaited autobiography. Published by RMC Media, it’s the fascinating tale of a truly unique life. ‘Distance No Object: Sheffield’s Man with the Pram’ is full of moving memories, insightful pictures from John’s own archive and a good dose of Yorkshire humour. From his early days in Sheffield, to his fundraising races and walks across the country, to the celebrities (and royals!) he’s rubbed shoulders with along the way, it really is quite a story. With his green wig, giant foam hand and colourful pram – not to mention the shorts he wears whatever the weather – John has become a familiar sight on the streets of the Steel City. Even at 77 years old, he spends almost every day walking around Sheffield collecting money for the cause closest to his heart, Macmillan Cancer Support. It’s an amazing level of dedication – and one inspired by a terrible personal tragedy. John’s beloved daughter Karen went into hospital for a routine operation, but complications meant she ended up on life support, and she died soon after. Within a

year, his wife June passed away from cancer. For John, this loss was a devastating blow – but the tragedy spurred him on to devote his life to helping others in need. A keen sportsman since childhood, John had developed a passion for race walking in the 1960s. Ever since, he spent most weekends taking part in races up and down the country, often raising considerable sums for charity in the process. After the loss of his wife and daughter, John dedicated every spare moment to these fundraising walks. Having raised thousands of pounds for various causes over the years, on his retirement at the turn of the millennium John decided to focus on one charity in particular, Macmillan. Since then, he has collected more than £350,000 for the charity – but the determined pensioner says he won’t stop until he’s reached £1million. In his green Macmillan outfit, with wig to match, John looks quite the character. But his awe-inspiring achievements have won him personal recognition too. In 2012, he was voted by the people of Sheffield to be a torchbearer when the Olympic torch relay passed through the city. A year later, he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list. Co-written with RMC’s Adam Kay, ‘Distance No Object’ tells these stories and many more. And as part of John’s fundraising

OLIVIA DALEY, 17, WHO SPENT PART OF HER SUMMER HOLIDAYS DOING WORK EXPERIENCE AT RMC MEDIA, REFLECTS ON THE CHALLENGES SHE AND HER FELLOW UPPER SIXTH STUDENTS FACE. efore beginning any school year there is always the uncertainty of what it will hold, but never was that question so at the forefront of my mind than before beginning sixth form. Now, having completed my first year and awaiting the beginning of the next, the question still persists and it seems more crucial than ever. It is difficult to put into words the feelings that come with knowing that all your current decisions will have an impact on your future. It is certainly anxiety-inducing, to say the least. From your exam efforts to the work you do beyond school hours, there is the continual pressure to work hard and do well. Burnout is certainly a common feeling amongst students before they enter the summer holidays, all too eager to have respite to recover from the emotionally draining year. The years of sixth form are like no other: it is a 24/7 occupation, with school work and contemplation of the future even pervading my summer holidays. As I anxiously wait for my AS level results, the beginning of the UCAS application process and ‘summer homework’ unfortunately keep me occupied. With my school setting the deadline for university applications for November, there is mounting pressure over making my decisions for the future: if I want to go to uni, what degree would I like to study and what career path would I be interested in pursuing? Such responsibility is daunting for every student, but even more so when you don’t know what you want, as is the case for myself. Although many possibilities float around in my mind, not being sure that you are making the right decision certainly adds to the stress. After all, the worst situation would be applying for a course or university you are not sure you want to take or attend, but only realising you don’t once it is too late. This, along with the increasingly competitive nature of the application process, makes year 13 both a difficult and pivotal year. The need to ‘stand out’ and sell yourself as a person who universities should be desperate to want on their course through

your personal statement forces a thorough evaluation of how your personality and all your interests can be used to make others view you favourably in a way that you never considered before. It certainly invites a selfexamination of whether you’re good enough, especially in relation to your peers. But, of course, none of this matters if you don’t meet the entry requirements for the course you want to take, causing tension and unease to accompany your studies and exam efforts in year 13. But this pressure is certainly felt in year 12 too, perhaps more so on my year than those who came before us, following the introduction of new changes to exam specifications as of 2015. Most AS levels no longer count towards your A level grade, meaning that exams which you do at the end of year 12 will have to be conducted again the following year, meaning all your work in year 12 must be relearned in preparation for year 13 exams and thus increasing the intensity of your workload in this final and critical year. Hopefully this gives you some idea of the woes faced by today’s generation of students. Although I have so far painted the school life of a sixth form student and year 13 in general in quite a pessimistic and unfavourable way, that is only one side of the story. There are certainly benefits to sixth form: with the increased workload comes a new-found independence that in lower years you don’t quite have. From the responsibility being placed on you to manage your studies and success to being free to wear your own clothes and finally shed yourself of your hideous school uniform, I know I have enjoyed this greater degree of freedom. Besides, approaching year 13 may bring with it many worries and pressures, but it also comes with the anticipation that you are coming close to the end of your school life and moving into a new chapter. Knowing I have my whole life ahead of me brings a mix of emotions, from a feeling of fear of the unknown to ultimately a feeling of optimism, but I am hopeful that the future will be promising.

Taste the Med ENJOY A LITTLE BIT OF SUNSHINE RIGHT HERE ON YOUR DOORSTEP. or those of us either too timepressed or too skint to grab a quick holiday to the Mediterranean, the Greedy Greek Deli on Sharrow Vale Road offers the perfect chance to enjoy a taste of the sun-soaked country without having to leave South Yorkshire. The restaurant has been open for 13 years and, judging by the abundance of positive online reviews, the deli has certainly made an impression on Sheffield’s discerning diners. Within 50 paces of the restaurant we were able to pick up the heady scent of lemon, oregano and garlic – a very promising start. We arrived at 6.30pm and found the venue was already buzzing with customers and staff. I’m not sure whether this was a result of the summer heatwave, or whether Monday nights are always this busy, but either way I’d book ahead. We browsed the menu for a good ten minutes, mulling over appetisers such as stuffed vine leaves (£4.80) and spanakotyropita (£4.40), and contemplating main dishes such as traditional pork gyros (£5.05) and falafel (£5.05). It’s fair to say between us, we could have eaten most of the dishes listed, and our dithering was clearly obvious to those around us. So when restaurant owner Dennis suggested the meze (£8.90 per person), pointing to the assortment of dishes on the menu while informing us “we just keep

bringing out a selection of different food” we were sold. The fact we were both ravenous helped sway us towards the decision, and, though we vowed not to fill up on pitta bread – and instead ‘save ourselves’ for the food to come – we soon polished off the bread and assortment of dips that were first to arrive at our table. With stuffed aubergine (£4.30), butter beans in tomato (£3.70) and spanakotyropita (spinach and feta pie) – all patently homemade and full of flavour – to name but a few, the meze was a real treat for the eyes as well as the tastebuds. The mains were complemented by a traditional Greek salad (£3) and fried halloumi (£5) – both delicious – and, as I chomped my way through the different platters, I could almost hear my dining partner’s heart sink. She usually has free rein when it comes to food, so was quite taken back when she found herself having to share dishes. When it came to the meat course, there was chicken souvlaki (cubes of skewered chicken) and lamb kofta (£8.10). The pick of the bunch, which go together beautifully, were the lemon potatoes, sautéed in a zingy citrus sauce. If pressed to pick my favourite dish, I’d choose the deceptively simple quartet of dips (£7.90): tzatziki, hummus, strofilia and olive

paté. These rough mashes arrive in small metal vessels, escorted by a fleet of pitta triangles that are baked in-house. Each scooped-up bite brings a new surprise, and uniting all four of these remarkable potions is the rich, fruity burnish of extra-virgin olive oil. Anyone who has ever shared a table with me will know I cannot resist a dessert, no matter how full I claim to be. So we finished with traditional baklava and orange cake with caramelised grapes, which were both unusually and pleasingly served warm. Now that I have tried most of the food available at the Greedy Greek, I will have a better idea of what to order next time. And, having eaten so much top-notch food, it’s not a question of if I will be making a return, but rather when. Eggs done expertly PHOEBE SEYMOUR IS HAPPY TO HAND OVER THE POACHING DUTIES TO MADE BY JONTY. usually pride myself on my breakfast-making abilities. I make a mean scrambled egg and I’ve just about worked out how long it takes to softboil an egg (most people will tell you three minutes, but I give it four to be on the safe side). But try as I might, I have never been able to master the poached egg. Thankfully, Made By Jonty excel (or should I say egg-cel) in this area. Their all-day brunch menu features every egg-related dish you could wish for, while their blackboard provides an interesting and varied selection of light bites. Though the café was full when my sister and I arrived for lunch, our table by the upstairs window provided a relaxing setting to chat and watch the fashionable world of Sharrow Vale Road go by. Inside, there was plenty of colourful Sheffield artwork to gaze at, including framed pieces by street artist Phlegm and a huge framed photo of the Peace Gardens. When it came to ordering my main, it had to be the king of all poached egg dishes – Eggs Royale (£6.50). With two toasted muffins topped with smoked salmon and two poached eggs, generously covered in

homemade hollandaise sauce, it was a magical moment when I cut into the eggs and discovered they were perfectly runny. My sister, on the other hand, went for something a little more exotic from the blackboard – the Roast Sweet Potato Quesadilla (£5.50) served with salsa and a rocket side salad. The sweetness of the potato was beautifully balanced by the strong cheddar filling, whilst the salsa added a bit of spice. Next, we perused the tempting cakes at the counter. Owner and chef, Jonty Cork, spared a moment in the kitchen to help me make my selection and to tell me a little more about his bakes. “They are all homemade and gluten-free,” he said. “By making them all in this way, we avoid cross-contamination with non-gluten ingredients and our customers can be sure of what’s in them.” I settled on a slice of blueberry and pecan cake (£2.40) accompanied by a small latte (£2.30), whilst my sister tried a slab of the highly-recommended chocolate brownie (£2.10) with a large cappuccino (£2.50). Piled high with a moreish butter cream icing, full blueberries, pieces of pecan and

drizzled in maple syrup, my fork effortlessly fell through the fluffy and moist sponge of my cake. I also managed to steal a forkful of brownie and found it to be crisp on top and devilishly rich and gorgeously gooey underneath. Death by chocolate did seem like a real possibility, but a fate I would have gladly accepted at the time. It’s almost unbelievable that desserts as delicious as these are completely gluten-free. The next time I get the urge to poach an egg, I know where I will be heading. My brunch-date satisfied my breakfast cravings and more. A passion for Italy MOLLY McGREEVY FINDS OUT WHY LA TERRAZZA DOES IT BETTER. hen La Terrazza first opened in 1997, Lidia Cantelmi was just a toddler. But after growing up watching her father and brother run the restaurant, she was handed the reins three years ago, and has been serving up authentic cuisine from Sharrow Vale Road’s little Italy ever since. And it’s this lifelong passion and dedication for La Terrazza that shines from Lidia and every dish that is served in the restaurant. Fresh ingredients are brought in daily, whilst beers and ice cream are imported for that genuine experience. To start, I opted for the rucola e formaggio caprino (£6.95), a pear and rocket salad topped with melted goats cheese. A light dish to begin with, the tanginess of the goats cheese was offset by the beautifully sweet red onion chutney, whilst the refreshing pears complimented the spicy rocket. Simple and stunning. Across the table, my companion ordered from the specials board, opting for grilled sea tiger shrimp (£7.95). Large and flavoursome, the shrimp was accompanied by a spiced butter, which was subtly flavoured yet really brought out the dish’s flavour. Starters were swiftly followed by mains, brought out by one of Lidia’s lovely team, who are never short of a smile or a little bit

of Italian flair; parmesan is served from a nifty little gadget and black pepper is ground from an oversized pepper mill. Made fresh, the generously filled ravioli parcels of my cappellini di zucca (£8.95) were perfectly al dente, their pumpkin filling deliciously sweet but not sickly. Classic Italian flavours came courtesy of the sundried tomatoes and rocket pesto, drizzled over the pasta parcels and providing both a great sauce and pretty presentation. It was my companion’s filetto Buckingham (£22.50) that really stole the show. Cooked rare, the steak sliced like butter, the tender cut was full of meaty flavour which was only enhanced by its stuffing of pate and bacon wrap. The port wine jus brought out the flavours but was subtle enough not to overpower the meat. Upon Lidia’s enthusiastic recommendation we opted for a bottle of Italian malt beer to accompany dessert. The beer is handmade and so is the bottle it comes in, complete with a swing bottle top – there’s not only an air of luxury about Amarcord, but a hint of cheekiness too, and Lidia told us to look out for their suggestive slogan at the bottom of the glass. Too indecisive to choose, we opted for the trio of tiramisu, cheesecake and profiterole

(£4.65) for dessert, with a few scoops of mixed ice cream (£4.50) to go with – the classic strawberry and vanilla flavours plus blueberry, an unusual flavour neither of us had tried before. All the desserts were simply divine. The profiterole, chocolate rather than cream filled, was light and airy whilst the tiramisu was spongy and soaked with coffee flavours, and the fresh Italian ice cream was fruity and creamy. As we drank up, Amarcord’s cheeky slogan was revealed…Italians do it better. That’s certainly true at La Terrazza, Sharrow Vale Road’s little Italian hideaway. Davis Cup trophy comes to Graves The newly-developed Graves Health and Sports Centre treated Sheffield families to a fun-filled day of free tennis and the opportunity to see and have a photo with the famous Davis Cup trophy. Activities involved a morning and afternoon session of mini and junior tennis for four to 16 year olds and cardio tennis for the adults. Attendees were also treated to a doubles exhibition match played by the centre’s very own coaches Sam Salt and David Sherwood, paired with junior player Joseph Newman-Billington, who is ranking top ten in the country, and Sheffield and District Champion 2016 Josh Gledden. The event was attended by more than 35 families, many of which enjoyed tennis for the first time. Huddersfield born Harold Wilson was one of the most famous and controversial British politicians of the post-war years, whilst Barbara Castle helped make history when she intervened in the dispute. She helped to resolve the strike, which resulted in a pay rise for Ford’s female workers – a major breakthrough at that time. A* GCSE success for Bakewell 13 year olds Two Year 8 pupils from S.Anselm’s School have achieved A* in their Latin GCSEs after taking them three years early. John and Anne Price, of Sandygate, held their popular annual fundraiser at Hallamshire Golf Club for the final time to raise more money for Weston Park Cancer Charity. John was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 1998 and has hosted seven themed golf days since, inviting friends and family to join him in support of the hospital that saved his life. Is snowboarding for everyone?

The food at Villa Rose is second-to-none

THE FRENCH ALPS RESORT OF SAMOENS IS THE PERFECT SPOT FOR BEGINNERS. WHERE BETTER FOR MARTIN EDWARDS AND HIS FAMILY TO TRY THE ALTERNATIVE TO SKIING? o what’s on your bucket list? Some figures out recently suggested that learning to ski features on more than 30 per cent of the wish lists of things you’d like to do before departing this life. This is somewhat surprising. After all, it’s hardly the most inaccessible pursuit, certainly not in comparison with other goals like skydiving, braving the Cresta Run or doing a spacewalk. All you need is a resort that’s particularly good for beginners and a challenge. In my case it had to be snowboarding. High noon. High up. Samoens, France. It was here, on the sunlit expanse of snowcovered mountainside, that the generations would battle it out to see who could master the art. In a moment of euphoria, we took up the idea advanced by our ten and 14-year-old daughters that it would be fun for the whole family to take snowboarding lessons together,

rather than the alternative, which would entail those of the older persuasion disappearing off in the general direction of Mont Blanc, having first deposited the children in ski school. Our years of skiing experience would count for nothing as we learned from the ground up. All good clean family fun. And we would dispel the notion that boarding was the preserve of the young. That, anyway, was the plan. In practice? Here’s how it turned out. Day 1. Eric the eagle. Eric was, despite his name, French, but spoke excellent English and was to be our instructor. The nice people at Villa Rose, our base for the trip, organised everything right down to the last piece of equipment. His instruction technique involved joining hands with each of his students before setting off on what looked for all the world like a waltz down the nursery slope. My turn came. I graduated from the waltz

to breakdancing as I crashed to the ground, from whence I was hoisted upright by Eric. This was not going to be easy. Snowboarding has a culture entirely of its own. Boarders seem to socialise in separate camps from the more numerous skiers, and even dress differently. Baggy ski pants, Peruvian hats and three-quarter length jackets are de rigueur. The children showed a grim determination to succeed in their new pursuit, while I wistfully pondered the thought of a future populated by would-be sons-in-law with straggly goatee beards, who smoke roll-ups and go by names such as Mac, Jed and Maz. Day 2. “I’ve had enough! Whose stupid idea was it to do this silly snowboarding?” The patience of the young was being sorely tested. It all seemed so simple waltzing with Eric, but actually getting the board to go in the desired direction was far from easy. We decided to calm the children with lunch at the lovely mountaintop restaurant nearby. But not before I had scythed down a ski instructor, and snowboarded through the middle of a French family’s slopeside picnic. Day 3. Alone. Eric had done all he could for us. Now it was down to practice. Going in a straight line is not that difficult, but turning, particularly turning right, is another matter. The tendency is to over-compensate the weight-shift and find yourself careering down the slope sideways on and facing uphill. Day 4. “I’ve had enough! Whose stupid idea was it to do this silly snowboarding?” There were all the signs of a full-blown tantrum. Thankfully, my wife says I don’t do it that often. Falling over is an unavoidable outcome of boarding. The difference is, it’s fiendishly difficult to get up again when you’re in your fifties. The young have no such problems. Seeing the parents admitting defeat and exchanging their boards for skis only served to urge them on. Day 5. Triumph. Whoops and yells of

It had been a long route to what we suspected was true all along; it’s still possible to enjoy skiing at practically any age. But snowboarding? That’s a pursuit for the youthful. If you are thinking of learning to ski or board, it’s vital to choose a destination that is suitable for beginners. A resort like Samoens ticks all the boxes. It’s a mere one hour’s drive from Geneva airport, with well-placed nursery slopes and the scope to explore a wide lift network when you’re confident enough. In terms of accommodation, there are hotels and chalets. And then there’s Villa Rose. This beautiful boutique hotel is unmatched in terms of facilities and service. From the private chef who creates menus to guests’ tastes, to that first glass of champagne as you reflect on the day’s skiing from the comfort of your designer armchair, it all adds up to the ultimate winter break experience. The setting is simply glorious – a traditional coaching inn perched at the top of an oldfashioned cobble-squared town complete with pretty church and ruined castle. At first glance, it would not seem totally surprising if the old Helmsley Highflyer, the 1830s stagecoach route linking Leeds and York, was still stopping to dispatch the great and the good (and the mail) three times a week. First impressions can be deceptive, however. Helmsley is not one of those model villages, existing purely for the benefits of passing tourists. It is a thriving market town in its own right and, while The Black Swan may offer the last word in old-fashioned creature comforts (including the four-legged variety as this is a dog-friendly hotel), the sustenance on offer is a celebration of all that is good about 21st century restaurant food. There’s a new head chef, Alan O’Kane, who began his career in landmark London kitchens including The Savoy and The Capital before returning to his native North East where he played a key role in establishing some of the region’s best-loved restaurants. He is making the most of some sensational local ingredients on a menu that celebrates the best classical and modern British cooking. This is food worth working up an appetite for, whether it’s a gentle stroll in the hotel’s gorgeous walled garden, or something more

strenuous such as the stunning seven-mile round walk from Helmsley to Rievaulx Abbey. The Black Swan’s 3AA rosette Gallery restaurant has art from some of the region’s finest artists hung on its walls, but if you opt for the six-course tasting menu, it will be hard to look away from the dazzling succession of artfully arranged dishes. This is a menu truly designed to show off Alan’s passion for bold flavour combinations to the full, a fabulous foodie experience that began with pre-dinner drinks in the cosy bar and superior snacks including tempura of Lindisfarne oyster with XO sauce and white onion, and 36-month aged parmesan veloute. That splash of XO sauce – a staple in Chinese cooking – was the first indication that chef likes to shake things up with the occasional hit of Oriental influence, a theme that carried on through the menu with a Thai aubergine dish and Japanese tosazu vinegar spicing up a gorgeously pink dish of Gressingham duck. This is prime game country of course, and a tasting of raw venison was most definitely one of the stars of the night. With flavours of burnt orange, smoked coconut, beetroot emulsion and egg yolk, this was full-on modern food at its most adventurous and flavoursome. Tasting menus are notoriously tricky to judge when it comes to portion control. Being over-generous can make the last couple of courses a chore, but on this occasion the final taste of bitter chocolate dessert was delicious and even tinged with a little sadness that a memorable dining experience was over.

Small SUV The Q2, Audi’s smallest SUV to date, is now available to order priced from £22,380. With the newest examples arriving in November, these examples are available with either a 114hp 1.6-litre diesel or a 148hp 1.4litre-petrol with the option of manual or automatic transmissions. Later in the year, a 114hp three-cylinder 1.0-litre TFSI petrol will be available from £20,230 as well as a 148hp 2.0-litre diesel. Something different Classic looks Following the announcement of the forthcoming Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato back in June, Aston Martin has now revealed the Volante version. Or to put it another way – the convertible. Zagato is an Italian coachbuilding firm and they’ve collaborated with Aston Martin to design exquisite-looking cars for nearly 60 years, starting with the DB4 GT Zagato race car in 1960. As with the coupe, the convertible comes with a 6.0-litre V12 naturally aspirated engine producing 592hp, which is good for a top speed of 200mph, and can achieve the 0-62mph sprint in just 3.7 seconds. The only difference between the coupe and the Volante is the Volante doesn’t come with Zagato’s infamous double-bubble roof. But I’m sure you’ll agree, this is one fine-looking machine.

Faster Focus RS Ford has announced that the Ford Performance by Mountune engine upgrade, which has been available on the Ford Performance fleet for a while now, is now available for the all-new Focus RS. For those who are unsure to what the Mountune engine upgrade is, it’s a power-boosting upgrade to the engine which does not affect the car’s warranty. The upgrade will cost £899, and for that you get a power increase of 25hp and a 30lb ft more torque over the standard RS, equating to overall power figures of 370hp and 376lb ft of torque.
