Putting things in place for a successful future THERE’S A NEW CHAIRMAN AND A NEW ERA OF EXPANSION FOR CITY HOMELESSNESS CHARITY EMMAUS SHEFFIELD. mmaus Sheffield, based in Cadman Street, close to Sheffield’s Victoria Quays, is the drug and alcohol free project that provides a home, support and work for formerly homeless people in the city. Through its social enterprise programme it aims to provide meaningful work and enable the people it supports – known as companions – to eventually become self-supporting once more. Bill Thomas, the charity’s new chairman of trustees, takes over from Martin Davies, who is retiring after 24 years as chairman of the Sheffield charity. “I am very honoured to be following Martin, said Sheffield-based Bill, who spent many years as a divisional managing director for estate agency Connells. “As we hopefully begin to emerge from the pandemic, this is an interesting time for Emmaus. The past 18 months have been a difficult time for all charities but Emmaus Sheffield has survived and continues to provide an excellent level of support for our companions. “That remains, as always, our absolute priority and we have to ensure that we have all the things in place to us into a successful future.” Many people know Emmaus Sheffield best for its extremely popular secondhand store at the organisation’s headquarters in the historic Sipelia Works, close to the city’s Canal Basin. And now the Emmaus companions have launched their own hand crafted furniture range to boost sales as the charity emerges from lockdown. “It became clear that we would have to adapt further to survive,” said the charity’s retail manager Kate Morgan. “We undertook a review of the social enterprise, to look at where we could change or improve the offering to the public and with the assistance of a grant

from Emmaus UK, we decided to employ a skilled workshop supervisor, and with his support, the companions not only continued to work on furniture restoration projects but also started to transform recycled wood and other items to create entirely new pieces. “As with everything we do at Emmaus, training forms a large part of the workshop supervisor role, providing our companions with an opportunity to gain real world skills and a huge sense of pride, seeing work they have done being sold in the shop.” The charity is currently creating new expanded workshop space that will allow training to develop even further. David Newton
And one of the companions who has most recently benefitted from the charity’s training programme is David Newton, who has now passed his driving test. “Passing my driving test opens doors to employment and it also means I can gain experience driving vehicles for Emmaus,” said David. “It is a big stepping stone, giving me more options for my future and is something I couldn’t have done without the support of Emmaus Sheffield.” Emmaus deputy manager Charley Fedorenko commented: “We are delighted that David has reached this very important personal milestone. “His success reinforces what we do, offering skills and training to help people build their confidence and open doors to employment. It is fantastic to see David’s efforts and hard work being rewarded and it’s a massive help too because we always need companions who can drive so we can keep offering our delivery and collection service for our shop.” To find out more about Emmaus Sheffield visit www.emmaus-sheffield.org.uk

SHARROW VALE
Best of both worlds SHARROW VALE HAS BEEN CREDITED AS ONE OF THE ‘COOLEST NEIGHBOURHOODS IN THE UK’. LUCY JAMES WENT TO FIND OUT WHY. irectly south-west of Sheffield city centre, situated just off Ecclesall Road is Sharrow Vale, a suburb which has become one of the UK’s coolest places to live. We often hear about areas in Sheffield such as Kelham Island or London Road – two of the most well known and vibrant places in the city, but Sharrow Vale has been the dark horse of them all, and in 2020, it was named in Conde Nast’s list of the ‘coolest neighbourhoods in the UK’ and has since become one of the UK’s must-see places. Sharrow Vale’s location is perfect for those who wish to benefit from the best of both worlds and be close to the city centre, as well as local green spaces and be a short distance from the countryside. This unique factor is the reason for its popularity, along with the wide range of well-reviewed shops and cafes within the area. Despite the suburb gaining national recognition and becoming a must-see place in the UK, property prices in Sharrow Vale are very reasonable with there being an average house price of £234,309.This is fantastic for anyone

wishing to relocate to a place with an even balance of city and greenspace living and have all amenities on your doorstep. Sharrow Vale is situated near many parks and greenspaces including the popular Endcliffe Park and has the Porter Brook River running through it giving some residents beautiful views from their homes and creating wonderful places for peaceful and scenic walks.
What’s there? The suburb is packed full of local outlets including restaurants and pubs for socialising with friends and family adding to the suburb’s vibrant community, as well as a fantastic range of shops from supermarkets and chemists to independent boutiques. Residents of Sharrow Vale never have far to travel to collect all of their essentials, and what is even better is that the city centre is just a ten-minute drive away. There is plenty of public transport around the area where you can get to the city centre in just ten minutes, or you could go in the opposite direction and head into the countryside and get
close to nature, with the edge of the Peak District being accessible by bus. Sheffield train station is around a tenminute drive away for any commuters or travellers, as is Sheffield interchange. The suburb is a popular spot amongst middle-aged people and families in particular with there being several schools located nearby, including one specialist school and Sheffield Hallam University’s collegiate campus is just a short walk away. Perfect for all families, there is a doctor’s surgery within the suburb and a number of others in the surrounding areas. There is also an opticians, dentist, hairdressers and gym, all within walking distance from the centre of Sharrow Vale.
Things to do Sharrow Vale is surrounded by an abundance of activities for all of the family. Whether you enjoy walking and sight-seeing, or you enjoy sports or eating good food with friends and family, Sharrow Vale is only minutes away from some of the best things to see and do in Sheffield.
SHARROW VALE
Endcliffe Park
Just a two-minute walk from Sharrow Vale is Endcliffe Park. A popular greenspace amongst all ages in Sheffield. Here there is a playground for children, a café, enough space to play sports, ponds and the Porter Brook River continues through Sharrow Vale and runs through the parkland, creating a peaceful and stunning riverside walk for all to enjoy. Every Saturday morning, Endcliffe Park is the location for the Sheffield Parkrun for any keen runners. Sheffield Botanical Gardens
Situated within walking distance from Sharrow Vale is the Sheffield Botanical Gardens, a beautiful greenspace covering an impressive 19 acres. Opening in 1836, the Gardens are listed as a Grade II site that is filled with historic and architectural beauty. The gardens include winding pathways which allow you to explore all 18 garden areas with each area being based on different botanical themes. There is a large glass house packed full of stunning plants from all across the globe, a café,
and a historic bear pit which the younger visitors love. Entry to the gardens is free for all. Sharrow Vale Market

Designer Kitchen Direct
The Mediterranean
Designer Kitchen Direct (DKD) have years of experience and know that Sheffield homeowners want to make their property a home rather than just a place to live, which means decorating each room to match their unique stylistic preferences. All cabinets and drawers will stand the test of time – 18 millimetre solid backs and sides, to hold them square, providing a firm base for high quality doors. And gloss doors are painted using multiple layers of lacquer to ensure a quality durable finish to every kitchen. “When revamping homes, many people pay attention to style above all else,” said Dawn Rayner, managing director. “However, we know that while it’s crucial to design an interior décor that makes you smile daily, it’s also vital to purchase kitchen furnishings, decorations and amenities that guarantee to stand the test of time. When you hire expert designers from Designer Kitchen Direct, you can feel confident that your new kitchen will survive for years with minimal required maintenance.”
Originally established in Sheffield in 1979 by Greek couple Ribika and her husband Michael, The Mediterranean is long recognised as the first restaurant in the city to serve tapas. Current owner Rachid El Afif worked in the kitchen for many years before taking over the reins. He gained valuable experience from working in some of the world’s finest fine dining restaurants; his mission is offering exceptional food and maintaining high standards of service. The Mediterranean is a destination that transports its customers to the sunshine with its exquisite authentic Spanish and Mediterranean tapas, fresh fish and succulent seafood. It is conveniently situated in Sharrow Vale, an area that is very vibrant and diverse with a great sense of community. The Mediterranean offers a relaxed and casual experience – perfectly combining the traditional with the contemporary.

Gold standard AS CHANGES IN CAREER GO, CHRIS HALLAM’S COULDN’T BE MORE EXTREME - BUT HE COULDN’T BE HAPPIER. LUCY JAMES SPEAKS TO THE RUGBY PLAYER TURNED JEWELLERY DESIGNER. 62 www.sheffieldvibe.com

“Obviously, there’s quite a contrast from ‘crash bang’ to delicate and refined, so that raised a few eyebrows initially! The rugby world gave me a great opportunity to network, and I have made jewellery for many former teammates.”
et in the idyllic upmarket regeneration district of Kelham Island is Chris Hallam’s Jewellery Design studio - the perfect place to buy bespoke pieces of jewellery to add that special and extra sentimental touch to a gift. Not your average goldsmith, Sheffielder Chris began his adult life as a professional rugby player, playing for teams including Doncaster Knights, Rotherham Titans and Worcester Warriors. “I am a local lad born and raised in a former coal mining village on the outskirts of Sheffield. At comprehensive school I found a flair for sport and was lucky enough to make a career out of rugby union. This opened up a world of opportunities, experiences and friendships but came with the downside of injuries and the compulsory ‘cauliflower ear’ despite me being a scrum-half! “I finished my career seven years ago as the captain at Doncaster Knights. I

was ready for new challenges and a new career. I loved the team environment, training and competing. I don’t miss it, but I enjoyed it. Jewellery has brought out my creative talents and enabled me to embrace different aspects of my personality and abilities. I love what I do, the whole process; it’s something very special.” During his rugby years, Chris’ uncle, a
goldsmith, taught him the trade but perhaps little did he know that eventually, his talents in design would result in the creation of a bespoke service. He now produces beautiful, oneoff pieces alongside a selection of tailored jewellery. “I am close to my uncle who has very much been a father figure to me growing up (my father passed away Chris meeting clients at his Kelham Island studio (this picture) and his rugby days (above)
“They can select the stones, configure the design, and I show them step by step the forging to the finishing of their jewellery through photographs and videos,” explained Chris. “It adds nothing to the cost but enhances the experience through appreciation. It adds
when I was in my early teens.) He is an artist with classical training as a silversmith who set up his own jewellery business over 30 years ago. I was at his workshop one day and he mentioned taking on an apprentice. I jumped at the chance, much to his surprise. It was a steep learning curve, but I loved it. Learning on the job. Creating and developing my own style. It was a great way to transition out of rugby.” With a very diverse background compared to the ‘typical goldsmith’, Chris has had a drastic change in his career path, so what do his old teammates think to this big change? “The rugby community are naturally close-knit and supportive; the camaraderie extends beyond the pitch. Transitioning from a career in sport can be a challenging experience so people were happy for me that I had found something I love. “Obviously, there’s quite a contrast from ‘crash bang’ to delicate and refined, so that raised a few eyebrows initially! The rugby world gave me a great opportunity to network, and I have made jewellery for many former teammates. Over the years I have built a reputation within the rugby community, and I now have a client base extending to a newer generation of rugby players, from grassroots to internationals.” So what does CH Jewellery create? CH Jewellery creates bespoke and handcrafted individual pieces of jewellery. The diamonds used in the pieces are sourced by the business to meet the client’s needs and all metals used are pure.
“Our focus is on quality,” said Chris. “We can rework existing jewellery to create new pieces. We believe jewellery should be worn, not kept in a drawer. We make jewellery to celebrate but also to commemorate and we have made a number of pieces with encased ashes. To view some of our creations follow me on Instagram @ch_jewellery.” As a bespoke jewellery design business, Chris invites each client to the design studio to get involved in the design and jewellery making process to ensure that the client receives their desired product.
sentiment to a piece. In a world of production-line assembly and disposable fashion, I think clients enjoy seeing authentic craftmanship in action.” Out of the many stunningly crafted products that Chris has designed he told me that he has one favourite in particular. “My fiancé’s engagement ring. I proposed at Christmas, but I’d been planning and working on the ring for months. She kept dropping hints, but I kept my cards close to my chest and it came as a complete surprise. I usually work on expressing other people’s emotions through jewellery, so it was nice to convey my own.” Chris has an international clientele with clients as far away as China and New Zealand – “Distance is not a problem,” said Chris.

Personal touch PA JEWELLERY DISCUSS HOW THEY CAN MAKE YOUR WEDDING RINGS EXTRA SPECIAL. our wedding rings are an important part of your big day and will remain with you throughout your marriage as a symbol of the love you share and the promises you have made to each other. Increasingly couples wish to make their wedding rings extra special by adding personal touches and we have a variety of ways to help you make your rings as individual as your relationship. We are regularly asked if we can make wedding bands out of customer’s gold. The answer is yes! Supplying metal for your rings can allow you to transfer the sentimental value of family heirlooms; many customers will use pieces of jewellery, perhaps even wedding rings, left to them by family members, giving the new rings a rich, unique and personal history. As an extra local detail, the rings will be assayed at the Sheffield Assay Office and receive the Sheffield assay mark. We can also work with your platinum or silver. Our experienced goldsmiths will melt your jewellery into a single piece and work it into your chosen shape and profile by hand. This process can be used to create a classic band or one specially shaped to sit next to an engagement ring if required. Your handmade ring can be further

personalised by adding a pattern or setting it with diamonds: there are a wide range of options available to allow your wedding ring to match an existing engagement ring or ensure it reflects your personality and style. You may even be able to use stones from your original jewellery depending on the
specifications of the design. Many customers also choose to finish their rings with a personalised message engraved inside the band. This could be the date of your wedding, your initials or lyrics from your first dance song; the choice is yours. You can choose from a selection of different font styles. If you prefer to wear metals with a silver colour but want to use family gold, then our expert team of goldsmiths have some clever solutions. Using a platinum or white gold band for the main body of the ring, we can inlay a narrow strip of your gold as a stylish finishing touch. Alternatively, if you don’t want any gold on show we can use your metal as the core band with a solid white metal overlay. When the ring is being worn the gold cannot be seen but if you take the ring off you can see the extra special core beneath. Visit us and speak to our jewellers to discuss your requirements and find out how we can make your wedding rings with a personal touch. A truly special venue MAKE MEMORIES THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME AT DUNSTON HALL AND GARDENS. hen David and Lynsey Harrison took ownership of Dunston Hall and the estates they had the distinct aim of returning the Grade IIlisted house to its former glory - and creating the most magical wedding and events venue. To say they have succeeded is an understatement to say the least. During the six-month renovation of the 16th century hall, the couple left no stone unturned, getting expert advice on every aspect, from choosing the right coving to fit in with the age of the building to sourcing antique furniture sympathetic to its history. They even sought counsel on choosing the right colour scheme. This attention to detail is evident throughout the building, which is situated on the edge of the Peak District between Chesterfield and Sheffield. It makes for the most stunning of venues for your celebration. This is far from a dated property though – with wifi throughout, smart TVs and state-of-theart kitchens and bathrooms, this is definitely a house for the 21st century. But Dunston Hall is as much about how it feels as well as how it looks. The hall has started to welcome its first guests who have been amazed, not just by the quality of the finishing, but by the freedom they are given when it comes to creating a truly bespoke and unique celebration. “This is your house,” said Beverley Paterson, who runs the hall with her husband Ian. “It's the first thing we say to guests when they arrive. We turn the hall over to the guests for the duration of their stay and we can be involved as much or as little as they like us to be.” It makes for a totally different experience for your celebration. Every little detail can be chosen by you. Food, drink, entertainment… you name it, Dunston Hall can accommodate it and then will leave you to enjoy it with the minimum of fuss. So whether you would like to imagine yourself as the Lord or Lady of the Manor, Prince, Princess or just have the most enjoyable and magical wedding of your dreams, Dunston Hall and Gardens

provides an ideal setting for a memorable occasion. If you wish to hold your wedding within the hall's grand dining room, which will seat up to 40 people comfortably, or its stunning garden room which seats 65, or have a marquee on the lawn for 100/200 guests, they offer a comprehensive and individually designed service. There is a ceremony room fully licenced, and ten luxury bedrooms available for your party, which can sleep 23 people. And plans are already in place to add holiday lets and shepherds huts as well as a beautiful large barn conversion which will hold up to 100 people from April next year (all subject to planning permission approval). Most weddings take place over two to three days where your family can really relax and enjoy this unique hall before
your guests arrive for a truly memorable experience. The Hall’s five acres of gardens are the perfect place for your family and friends to relax before or after your celebration; whether you choose to play croquet on the perfectly manicured lawns or take a dip in one of the hot tubs, there's something for your whole party to enjoy. You're free to roam at your leisure. The Dunston Hall experience begins as soon as you turn off the B6050 onto the gravel driveway, which leads you up

to the stone dwelling. Step through the imposing front door and you'll find a grand staircase separating a dining room to the left and reception room and library to the right. At the back of the hall on the ground floor is a large kitchen as well as the entrance to a cellar bar, complete with video games and a karaoke machine. Upstairs you'll find the ten luxury ensuite bedrooms, which have all been individually designed, including a stunning honeymoon suite with fourposter bed, dressing room, huge bathroom and amazing views over the grounds of the hall. “We set out to restore a period property to its former glory but also give Dunston Hall a new lease of life… ensuring the future of the hall and enabling people the opportunity to experience something truly special where memories will be made and kept forever,” said David. Dunston Hall has worked with many local suppliers throughout the refurbishment process and continue to work with them now, most notably on the catering side. These include Bakewell Bakery, Highfield Farm, Winster Foods, The Gentleman Fishmonger, John Hattersley Wines, and Franklin & Sons.
Head chef Lindsey Divens, who oversees Dunston Hall functions as well as the bistro within the Garden Centre next door (also owned by David and Lynsey), can create bespoke menus just for you, from bacon sandwiches in the morning, to formal sit down dinners in the evening and even outdoor hog roasts. “Her reputation for food is awardwinning and we are proud to have her on our team,” added David.
“Here at Dunston Hall we like to make the experience about you," added Beverley. "From weddings to bespoke events such as birthdays, blessings, anniversaries and family get-togethers, we can design and offer you a truly unforgettable experience that will hold precious memories.” Dunston Hall truly offers something different, putting you and your party at the heart of your celebration in a venue where you can really relax and enjoy the experience. Reflecting over the past 18 months owner Lesley Taylor of New Image said: “In the beginning lockdown was very worrying, we wondered what the future would hold. Thankfully things are getting back to normal and we have worked very hard sourcing the latest in fashion and style for our customers 2022/23 wedding outfits. “With many customers having already made their purchase for a 2020/21 wedding and wonderful news wedding celebrations can now go ahead with family and friends, it has been an increased pressure for our seamstresses to get all the little nips and tweaks done within a short window.” “Our customers enjoy the personal service and attention they get from an independent boutique,” added Lesley. “We all know the high street has changed but New Image continue to work hard to maintain great levels of customer service.” As well changes in shopping trends Lesley has also seen a change in wedding
trends, this year and next, with the smaller ceremonies created by Covid now becoming much more acceptable, although she does believe that bigger weddings will return. The return of holidays and weddings abroad has seen a bigger uptake in lighter dress styles and cruise wear is proving hugely popular. Casualwear has also been in high demand and is perfect for staycations when the weather can be, at best, unpredictable. Think soft colour palettes, scented candles, soothing music playing in the background, warm light; close your eyes and you could be visiting a spa rather than a surgery for your latest check-up. Open since June, Harley Private Dental, based on Kingfield Road in Nether Edge, provide high-end, quality dentistry in a luxurious, comfortable and holistically led environment where the emphasis is placed on giving you the most stress-free experience possible. A partnership between Dr Abdul Matin Azizi and Dr Ehsan Naghieh, the idea for the clinic manifested during their time at university together. The surgery offers general dentistry services as well as cosmetic treatments including Invisalign, whitening, implants, composite bonding and full smile makeovers. “We like to think that what we are offering is totally unique, particularly here in Sheffield,” said Dr Azizi. “Your health is at the forefront of what we do but we have a respect for our patients and treat them like family members. relaxed and feel like this is a home from home.” At your initial consultation, photos are taken of your teeth and presented to you on a TV screen where you can then discuss your mouth’s health, hygiene and what you would like to achieve from your visits to Harley Private Dental.Your principal dentist will talk you through everything to make sure you’re completely comfortable with any treatments they undertake. Once you’re suitably at ease, you can sit back, relax, and begin your ‘smile journey’. The minimalist treatment rooms have everything you would expect to find at your regular dentist – and much more besides. As well as the wall-mounted TV there’s also a ceiling-mounted TV so you can focus on some calming images, or for longer procedures, even watch your favourite movie or TV show. Patients are also supplied with state-of-the-art noise-
cancelling headphones either to listen to some music – a full Spotify catalogue is available – or just block out any sounds you may find uncomfortable. Harley Private Dental has further invested in the latest technology with the addition of an iTero scanner, which is used to take imprints and measurements of your teeth. It’s a modern alternative to the gooey moulds you’re perhaps familiar with and takes an image of your mouth in minutes which can then be 3D printed to make an exact replica. They also have an in-house CT scanner for 2D and 3D images of your head and neck. Keeping things under one roof, the surgery is supported by an oral surgeon, orthodontist, a restorative dentist and hygienist. Harley Private Dental has quickly made an impact in the community too and is working with Sheffield United’s community outreach programme to provide oral health advice to children. The clinic is fully CQC approved and offers flexible appointment times seven days a week. Step into luxury to indulge in a tranquil dental experience like no other. Leopold Latin vibes WITH DRINKS, DANCING AND DELICIOUS TAPAS, CUBANA IS A VENUE LIKE NO OTHER, WRITES CHIARA BRUNO. he first thing that you notice from the moment you walk into Cubana is its electric atmosphere and lively Latino vibes. From the varied music and dancing in the bar area downstairs, to the live singing and hubbub of the restaurant upstairs, you can’t help but feel that Sheffield is enjoying its own tiny slice of Cuba, right in the heart of the city centre in Leopold Square. Transporting me away from the drizzly streets of Sheffield and into an authentic restaurant in Cuba, I began the evening by ordering a summery Aperol Spritz (£8) whilst my companion chose the zingy Elderflower Collins (£7.75). Cubana also hosts an enormous variety of rums from the Caribbean, Americas and beyond, making it the perfect place for a rum enthusiast. After a long while deliberating the food menu, we eventually chose a selection of eight dishes between us, which according to Cubana’s useful guide, is enough to satisfy our hunger, although there is always opportunity to order more. The set tapas menus are also a great addition, helping you out if just can’t choose. As the food swiftly arrived in their traditional tapas style bowls and filled up our table, we eyed them all greedily, excited to start our feast.

The first dish we tucked into were the Pimientos de Padrón (£5.95) – grilled Padrón peppers covered in rock salt. These are best enjoyed on their own and make for the perfect antipasto before starting on the rest of the meal, and were absolutely delicious. The Gambas Pil Pil (£6.75) consisted of a mountain of the juiciest tiger prawns cooked in garlic with a hint of chilli, and the Pollo y Chorizo (£5.95) was made up of succulent pieces of chicken breast and slices of chorizo sausage, in a creamy tomato sauce. Just divine. Next, we started on the Res y Cebolla (£6.75).The thinly sliced ribeye steak was beautifully tender, cooked alongside the sweet and sticky caramelised red onions. Contrasting the steak dish was our order of Atún con Frijoles (£7.45) – a beautiful piece of seared tuna steak sitting on a bed of a flavoursome cannellini bean salsa, topped with a good wedge of lemon. The Patatas Bravas (£3.65) made for the perfect side dish and accompaniment to the rest of the food, especially to the Pincho de Verduras (£5.25) which consisted on a skewer of lightly grilled courgettes, peppers and onions. Our final plate, Mozzarella y Jamón (£6.50), was made up of the crispiest and tastiest slices of Serrano ham, wound
around chunks of oozing and melted mozzarella. It really was a treat. After everything that we had eaten, I truly believed we couldn’t fit in another mouthful of food. But then I saw the dessert menu and I couldn’t resist ordering the Churros. We couldn’t help but go for the full ten churros (£13.95) to share between us, served with two sauces; a stunningly rich, dark chocolate sauce and a smooth, milk chocolate sauce. The doughnut loops, which were dusted in sugar, made for the most stunning dessert and complemented my Espresso Martini (£8) just perfectly. Our evening ended with a round of applause for the live singer who had entertained us throughout and made our evening and Cuban journey even more wonderful. Divine inspiration DEEP INSIDE SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL YOU’LL FIND THE 1554 COFFEE & GIFT SHOP. BY MARTIN EDWARDS. kay, let’s get the jokes over with straight away. If you’re in the city centre and in need of a break, the 1554 coffee and gift shop is the answer to your prayers. It will be a revelation, just like that of Saul on the road to Darnall. Yeah, the menu includes today’s special, five loaves and three fishes. Available strictly while stock lasts. Hurry, offer limited to first five thousand customers…. And so on. Well, what do you expect if you open a café inside a cathedral? The staff have heard it all before, but take it in good spirit. Sorry, that was unintentional, honestly. In fact, the people behind this charming little development are sharing in the fun. Just look at the name they chose for their particular blend of coffee. Would you believe Heavenly Coffee?
O
The place is a serene retreat from the bustle and noise of the city centre just outside the door. Deep in the inner fabric of the ancient building, it’s not particularly easy to find, but then again who wants huge obtrusive signs adorning our beautiful Cathedral? Everything is done in the best of taste. If you can, try and get a seat near the centerpiece of the café, consisting of a breathtaking display of Victorian stained glass and much older stone panels. There’s a handy explanation of their provenance on a chalk board previously used to highlight specials of the day. The food consists of basics like pastries, soup and small snacks. Nothing fancy, just the ideal things for a light bite. As I sat sipping my ethereal coffee, I contemplated how it was clear the food is all freshly prepared. This was in stark
contrast to my stop a couple of days earlier at a city centre café, which shall remain nameless. Put it this way, the pastry served tasted like it dated from 1554. A plague upon it. And be thankful for a proper café. Here endeth the lesson. 1554 Coffee & Gift Shop Sheffield Cathedral Church Street, Sheffield, S1 1HA Tel: 0114 275 3434 www.sheffieldcathedral.org

Peacock at Cutthorpe David joined the Peacock in 2018. Taking inspiration from his dad growing up, he confesses to having a sweet tooth and loves working with chocolate and making new desserts. Sticky toffee pudding is one of the favourite dishes at the Peacock – “Come rain or shine and on every menu it’s there because it is such a classic dish and we have definitely perfected it over the years,” he said. The Peacock pride themselves on using local and seasonal produce to bring out the very best of what the area has to offer. While lockdowns have been gently easing and the public have been enjoying going out to eat they have focused on a smaller menu that caters to a wide range and maintaining the high standards they are known for. David believes the pub has enhanced appeal with its sizeable outdoor seating area and it’s proximity to walking paths and Linacre reservoir. “I know that I’ll still be here as the sous, we’re all very lucky here at the Peacock to have such an understanding manager and head chef,” added David. “It’s a good work life balance and I’m very happy where I am... and the sticky toffee will still be here as well.” Call 01246 563669 to find out more or visit https://cutthorpe.net 100 www.sheffieldvibe.com
After being in the UK for two years, Alfredo started college studying catering and hospitality. This quickly grew into a passion for cooking, which in turn developed a hunger to have his own restaurant. Alfredo has now been the proud owner of Maranello’s restaurant on Ecclesall Road for seven years. He serves authentic Italian food, inspired by his time living in Italy, and his signature dish is Agnello Siculo, a succulent lamb dish which is slow cooked for four hours. It’s very popular with his regular customers. “This job requires passion and a lot of patience,” said Alfredo. “The reward is satisfaction and not always money. “I enjoy seeing customers walk out of my establishment happy and they return. It’s a great evening when they buy me a drink rather than the other way round!” Find out more by calling 0114 266 5491 or by visiting maranellos.co.uk

“I have been working in this trade for 28 years now, and have been a head chef for more than 18 years,” says Mohammed. Having worked at Prithi Raj since the day the restaurant opened almost ten years ago, it’s Mohammed who is still in charge of their menu today. Mohammed’s passion for Indian and Bangladeshi food and his commitment to the industry mean that he’s constantly creating new dishes and flavours for the restaurant. “It all started as a part-time job for pocket money and that very quickly turned into a passion which is getting stronger everyday since I first started cooking,” he said. “I try not to single out any dish, but from the chicken bhuna to the lamb Kashmiri bhuna I try to have a twist that represents me the chef and Prithi Raj. I don’t compete or compare with others but myself.” To find out more, call 0114 266 6002 or visit www.prithirajrestaurant.com

The kitchen is the perfect place for Andrew to create and experiment. Spending a lot of time in the family kitchen, making Sunday dinners and how to make the most of leftovers, is what inspired him to pursue a career in catering. The restaurant’s eclectic menus keep Andrew and his team on their toes. “I think the whole small plates menu sums me up,” he said. “The mix of dishes from various cultures gives me the opportunity to put across the different aspects of who I am as a chef and person.” As we move into the autumn/winter months, Andrew is focusing on Bank House’s seasonal a la carte menu and is also working on a kitchen conversion project with work due to start in January, which will double its size and add some of the latest kitchen technology. There’s even rumours of a second Bank House venue… “As a business we’re grow’ng rapidly,” he added. “I was appointed a company director last year and I suppose in five years time I’ll be overseeing a few kitchens, but I like to think I’ll still be cooking at Bank House as it’s what I enjoy.” For more information, call 01433 449060 or visit www.bankhousehathersage. co.uk
Adrian works largely at The Maynard but also at The George in Hathersage. Family has been a big inspiration to him. “My grandmother, great-grandmother and of course, my mother. All of these lovely ladies cooked for our families with such pleasure and joy, using simple and flavoursome ingredients with traditional techniques - resulting in consistently delicious food,” he said. Both venues utilise local produce which you’ll find throughout their menus but there’s one thing in particular that is Adrian’s favourite: “I love doing Sunday roasts. All of the fresh roast vegetables, duck fat and herbs roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese bubbling in cheese sauce, crispy Yorkshire pudding… and the most tender sirloin from our local butchers. I’d recommend it to anyone and everyone.” To find out more, call 01433 424110 or visit https://the-maynard.com/
David came to England around 2006 from Hungary and after having a few different jobs found his passion in the kitchen - he loved the atmosphere and vibe. He’s based at the newly-opened George in Hathersage and, backed by an ‘amazing team’, loves working with fresh fish as well as putting his twist on classic British dishes. “We have recently spent over £400k on a full refurbishment at the George, with a new menu too,” he said. “I really like salmon or mackerel, either smoked or not, and using fresh local vegetables to go with the seasons. “I really enjoy modern British cuisine. I like preparing traditional dishes with a modern slant, bringing twists, flair and new techniques to the dishes.” Call 01433 650436 to find out more or visit https://thegeorgehathersage.com

Take it to the bank CHIARA BRUNO ENJOYS A PERFECT NIGHT IN THE PEAK DISTRICT. urrounded by the spectacular hillsides of the Peak District, The Bank House in Hathersage is a welcoming and vibrant restaurant and cocktail bar, enjoyed by many for its local and British feel with a twist of the Mediterranean. Greeted by warm and welcoming staff, we began our evening on the second floor of the former banking building, (hence the name), with a table for two overlooking the stunning countryside. With the sun slowly setting behind us, casting the most beautiful shadows on the gentle peaks of the hills, I knew we were going to have a perfect night. After we had perused the extensive wine, beer and cocktail list, my husband and I eventually settled on wine and both opted for a rich red; mine a large Primitivo Maestro Puglia and my husband’s a Faustino Rivero Crianza Rioja (£8.50 each for 250ml). We were then presented with our starters from the Specials A La Carte menu, and I was, quite frankly, blown away. The presentation of each starter was just stunning, but the best was yet to come; their incredible tastes and textures. I enjoyed the Braised Beef Cheek (£8) which was cooked so beautifully it instantly melted in the mouth. With a nod to the Mediterranean, the beef sat on

a bed of a creamy smoked herb polenta, pickled shallots and bone marrow, giving it just that extra spark of magic. The Cured Sea Trout (£8.50) of my husband’s married perfectly with the Shivering Mountain Gin it was cured in and the radish and fennel espuma was something else; soft and smooth, contrasting perfectly with crunch of the crispy shallots. Attention to detail is something The Bank House clearly takes pride in, and my main of Gressingham Duck Breast (£26) proved exactly this. Cooked exactly how I like it with thick, crispy skin and pink inside, it was bursting with flavour. It was also served with the classic French dish, Pomme Anna, consisting of sliced, layered and creamy potatoes as well as a delicious, and really quite charming, foie gras lollipop. The rich carrot and blood orange jus linked all of these elements together just beautifully. My husband enjoyed the Lamb Cannon (£24), which once again showed the exceptional skills of the chef, with the meat cooked exquisitely; succulent, tender and pink. The lamb was coated in a pistachio, raspberry and sesame crumb, adding an extra texture to our tastebuds, and the red wine jus complemented the honey glazed potatoes, al dente Romanesco broccoli
and smooth pea puree perfectly. In addition to our mains, we were served a side of steamed vegetables, dressed in olive oil and chives. Finally, as our evening drew to a close, we moved onto our desserts. My husband’s Hazelnut Tart (£7.50) was sweet and sticky with the crunchy toffee shards standing prominent in the middle creating an immediate allure. My MilleFeuille (£7.50) demonstrated an elegance with its beautifully sweet pastry, strawberry compôte and, my personal favourite, sprinkles of white chocolate soil. If you’re looking for a restaurant situated amongst striking scenery, serves excellent food and provides the right atmosphere to make your night special, The Bank House ticks every box. Peak of perfection IT’S ALL CHANGE AT THE GEORGE, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. s far as transformations go, the changes at the recently reopened George in Hathersage are pretty spectacular. The memory of its previous incarnation, The George Hotel, has been completely wiped and what stands there in its place is a modern, welcoming dining pub that retains its hotel bedrooms too. The aged stone building occupies a prime position on the main road through Hathersage and is a perfect spot to visit whether you’re looking for a post-walk pick-me-up after a day in the Peak District or entertaining friends over dinner and drinks. The George is now operated by Longbow Bars & Restaurants and comes under the same umbrella as The Maynard in Grindleford. Rob Hattersley did a sterling job of transforming the latter last year and has worked his magic with his latest venue. A five-week transformation has completely transformed the venue. Enter through the front door and you’ll find a bar to the left and casual drinking/dining area to the right. Carry straight on, under the stone arch, and you arrive in a light, bright dining room with views out on the courtyard. The décor is country contemporary and in-keeping with the building. It’s

warm, welcoming and had a real buzzing atmosphere on the evening of our visit. The menu delivers good, gastropub grub as well as woodfired pizzas, burgers and steaks. Chef David Palfri sources supplies locally where possible; this provenance is detailed on the menus and includes meat from New Close Farm in Over Haddon and Owen Taylor in Alfreton, fish from RG Morris & Son in Buxton, and fruit and veg from Winster Foods in Chesterfield. In addition, wine is supplied by Rob’s father John of Hattersley Wines in Bakewell and coffee comes from Roastology in Sheffield. Although there were plenty of tempting starters on offer, we decided to begin our evening by sharing one their sourdough pizzas, cooked fresh in minutes in a newly-installed oven just around the corner from where we were sitting. The ‘Classic Italian’ (£9.95) was made with homemade tomato sauce, grated mozzarella, heritage cherry tomatoes, rocket salad and parmesan shavings, peppadew peppers and prosciutto – a well-known marriage of flavours but the real star was the base, which was deliciously thin and crispy as it should be. We complemented our starter with a well chosen bottle of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Ancora (£price). We followed this with a classic pub dish – homemade pie of the week
(£15.50) – which on this occasion was chicken and mushroom and served with minted mushy peas, kale, proper gravy and mash. Fully enclosed in pastry it was what I like to call a ‘proper pie’ and very good too with flavoursome filling and really good mash. The gravy was top notch as well. My wife opted for a not-so-classic pub dish in the form of a North African Tagine (£17.95) which came with a marinated lamb leg steak and a side of rocket, quinoa and pomegranate salad. The lamb was especially tender whilst the tagine had a real kick of spice. Sticky toffee pudding (£6.95) was perhaps an obvious choice for dessert but a good one whilst I opted for The George Gourmand - a selection of miniature desserts served with espresso (£9.50), a delightful way to finish any meal. Down on the farm... ... YOU’RE IN FOR A BIG SURPRISE, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. f you’ve been looking for things to do with your children over the summer no doubt you’ve dropped into Whirlow Hall Farm to see the animals or take a stroll through the orchard or surrounding areas. It’s a stunning spot in south-west Sheffield with views out into the Peak District and beyond. If you’re one of the many who have visited, you can’t have failed to notice the brand new cafe. Called The Barn, it is housed in a brand new structure alongside the farm shop with huge windows overlooking a small terrace and new children’s playground. It is currently only open to walk-ins Wednesday to Sunday from 10am-4.30pm (kitchen closes at 4pm) serving a range of brunch and lunch dishes as well as pastries, snacks and hot and cold drinks. But this is not just any farm cafe. Whirlow Hall Farm pulled off something of a coup, recruiting Luke Rhodes as head chef with a brief to utilise the best of the farm, as well as local, produce. If the name sounds familiar, you may recognise Luke from Masterchef: The Professionals, which aired on BBC1 in the run-up to Christmas last year. The Sheffield chef put in a sterling performance on the show, producing some stunning dishes before bowing out in the semi-finals.

He’s certainly hit the ground running at The Barn, serving some equally stunning dishes on the day of our visit. Thanks to those huge windows mentioned earlier, the cafe is a bright, airy space with orange tables and mismatched wooden chairs, many of which looked like they’d been reclaimed from schools. Industrial-style lighting adds an element of cool. We really liked it. The Barn operates cafeteria style; you’ll find menus, cutlery and bottled water (and glasses) on your table but then order the counter which is also stocked with a good selection of homemade pastries, snacks and drinks. Brunch is served all day and is complemented by more substantial lunch dishes as well as a good kids’ menu, which includes sausage and mash, Whirlow burger and chips and Yorkshire pasta and tomato sauce (all £6) as well as nibbles and lunch boxes (both £5). After a seriously good starter of warm ciabatta bread served with Henderson’s Relish butter, we decided to choose from both menus. From the brunch menu, beef brisket hash (£8) – low ‘n’ slow beef, crispy potatoes and roasted onions and topped with a fried egg and sriracha mayo – had distinct Asian flavours and was just delicious. My Whirlow pork belly (£14), braised in cider and topped
with pork crackling crumb and served with a pork cheek bonbon, charred savoy colcannon, roasted apple purée and a cider jus, was as good, if not better, as any restaurant dish I’ve eaten recently. Drinks came in the form of a Whirlow Orchard cider (£4) and sparkling blood orange San Pellegrino (£1.50). Across the table, my son wasn’t put off by the generous portion sizes and devoured his burger and chips with gusto before tucking into a rich chocolate caramel brownie. For dessert, we option for a light and refreshing yuzu tart (£5), which was served with a lemon thyme crumb and a creme fraiche sorbet. As the cafe evolves, from the autumn The Barn will be serving Sunday lunches and Luke will be hosting monthly bistro nights. If this visit is anything to go by, we can’t wait. Pop Inn, anytime SAM PEGG ENJOYS A WHOLESOME AND MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE AT THE PEACOCK. ocated in the middle of the countryside in Cutthorpe, with views that look over miles of scenery, sits The Peacock Inn, proud winners of Westside and Southside’s 2018 best dining pub and 2019 best family friendly pub. It offers a cosy environment and flavoursome food with an open fire during the winter months, a comfortable interior space, an impressive beer garden and a play area for the kids. There is an extensive food and drinks menu with a wide variety of dishes to choose from and a range of prices. From a fresh fillet of salmon to a 7oz 28-day aged fillet steak, there’s a meal to provide a high level of excitement for everybody. The Peacock offers a vast selection of draught beer, wine, gin, spirits and even an assortment of real ale - a recommendation here of the Bakewell Best. The food seemed to accompany the environment and vice versa. They use independent and locally sourced produce which was instantly clear when tasting the flavour and quality of the food. Each dish was presented beautifully making the experience all the more wholesome and memorable. For starters we indulged in the monkfish scampi and tartare sauce (£8) and the basil and mozzarella arancini (£7). Both starters were fresh, light and
L

generous in portion. The monkfish seemed a popular option amongst other diners around and it was clear as to why that was – it was well balanced and remarkably flavoursome. The arancini was delicious and each component complemented the other perfectly. For mains we were almost stuck for choice with the carefully pieced together selection of meals. For us it had to be the 7oz 28-day aged fillet steak, chunky chips, mushrooms, tomato and blue cheese sauce (£27) and the pork and leek sausages, creamy mash, seasonal greens and gravy (£14). Both were moreish and compacted with flavour to transport us to another place. The steak was tender, well rested and was cooked to perfection. There was a very generous portion of salad and chunky chips to accompany it. The sausages were extremely smooth in texture and I was left with a great big smile on my face after indulging, the creamy mash was indeed creamy and buttery and the freshness of the seasonal greens was pleasant. For dessert taking on the recommendation of the waitress we had the sticky toffee pudding, toffee sauce and ice cream (£6) and the rich chocolate brownie and ice cream (£6). Both finished the meal off perfectly and left us feeling pleasantly full and content.
Presented beautifully and rich in flavour, both were lovely. The waitresses were personable and had a good knowledge of the menu. Other diners seemed to be having a great time, facilitated by all the work the staff were doing to ensure their happiness. The experience provided was both classy and comfortable, a mix that married together perfectly. The Peacock Inn is located right next to Linacre Reservoir which has beautiful walks through nature. It is only a 15minute drive from Dronfield and worth a trip from Sheffield. It appeals to hikers/walkers, cyclists or if you’re out for a scenic drive. Why not try out one of their afternoon teas, come to their burger night on Mondays from 5pm, bring your family for a Sunday roast dinner or simply enjoy the menu any other time in the week? Don’t miss a thing OLIVIA WARSOP ENJOYS A NIGHT AT THE DOGS. n exceptionally great night out is just what everyone needs. Getting dressed up and having amazing food and drink hasn’t happened as regularly as it used to but that just makes it even more special. The Panorama Restaurant at Owlerton Stadium has food and atmosphere to spare and naturally I jumped at the chance to visit. When you book the table table it’s yours for the entire evening and the price includes admission, a three-course meal, your race card and a tote runner to take your bets. Tickets are priced at £15 per person on a Tuesday, £20 on a Friday and £25 on a Saturday. The à la carte menu also caters for everyone with multiple vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. When we arrived we were shown to our table and left to peruse the drinks menu – they stock a wide variety of wines, draughts and spirits starting from just £2.50.We wasted no time in settling down with a gin and taking in the scene. True to it’s name, the Panorama has perfect views of the race track and tiered seating for up to 300 people meaning the atmosphere is incredible. For starters we had a refreshing

watermelon and charred halloumi salad served with pitta bread croutes and a roasted lemon and chilli dressing, and a delicious smoked cheese and field mushroom tartlet with a hazelnut and garlic crumb. Both portions were very generous and I realised that if the main dishes followed suit then I was going to regret my outfit choice! When our main dishes arrived I was grumbling over lost bets but immediately brightened by perfectly tender escalope of salmon served with rich creamed peas, baby onions and pancetta, on a bed of cheddar mash. We also enjoyed juicy pork loin steak with tart apple sauce, served with a huge seasoned Yorkshire pudding and caramelised onion gravy. It’s worth noting that all mains come with sharing platters of seasoned roasted potatoes, cabbage, steamed broccoli and cauliflower cheese. With such amazing food I often found my attention divided when the lights went down for a race, ingeniously, however, there are screens throughout the restaurant showing replays so you can catch anything you might have missed. When dessert arrived we were a little less out of pocket and happily sipping a crisp rosé. A decadent salted caramel
cheesecake served with honeycomb ice cream on a layer of toffee popcorn was just as spectacular as it sounds with the salt in the caramel stopping it being too sweet, and the warmed lemon drizzle and poppyseed pudding with lemon curd custard was equally as mouthwatering and similarly had the perfect sweet to sour balance. Trying your luck is part of the fun and while we hadn’t made our millions on the track we had certainly won with the food. The Panorama is a fantastic night out with an unbeatable atmosphere so book a table and when you go take two things with you – your appetite and a lucky charm! EATING OUT
Time to hit the town MARTIN EDWARDS HAS FOUND HIS NEW ‘MUST-HAVE’ DISH AT CHINATOWN – AND MUCH MORE BESIDES. well remember my first ever meal at a Chinese restaurant. I would have been about eight, and the venue was an eatery near Doncaster, meaning that it must have been a special occasion indeed. Why else undertake a long distance journey like the one-hour trek it took us to get there? The menu was immense and written in characters I couldn’t comprehend. I took the cowardly but very British way out and ordered tomato soup. It was all right. But my abiding memory is my fascination with the place itself. Waiters who darted to and fro spoke to each other in a strange language. Every now and again, one would burst through the double doors into the kitchen, releasing a wall of noise, steam, clattering plates and flames. The walls were adorned with dragons and caricatures of individuals who looked deadly serious and wore silk dressing gowns. All very fascinating to an impressionable eight-year-old. These days of course, we’re now far better-informed about Chinese and oriental food - and we can readily distinguish the exceptional from the merely ordinary. And if it’s the exceptional you’re
I
120 www.sheffieldvibe.com
looking for, look no further than Chinatown, which sits proudly at the city end of London Road. The name of the place is appropriate. It’s as if it denotes the beginning of a zone rich in oriental eating places, much like Liverpool and Manchester with their official Chinatowns. However, it won’t be long until Sheffield stops playing second fiddle to its northern neighbours as the New Era Square development comes into being. In case you were unfamiliar with the place names, we’re referring to the huge building which towers above the ring road. But back down to ground level again, and we’re getting a taste of what makes Martin Ng’s restaurant a cut above the rest. We decided on combination of evergreen dishes plus one or two new experiences. But before thinking about any of that, it had to be the scallops. Ah yes, the scallops... A dish recommended to us by Martin on our last visit, they really are the last word in how to cook and present good quality seafood. Arriving at the table on the shell, and finished with glass noodles, they are now our ‘must-have’ dish at Chinatown.
Other honourable mentions around the table were proclaimed for salt and pepper tofu, the perennial sesame prawn toasts, the the genuine version of which are hard to find because some restaurateurs augment them with chicken meat, presumably as a cost-saving measure. But no worries, these were the real thing. The same enthusiastic reception was given to the sizzling beef and the classic crispy duck. We followed the example set by most customers of using the rotating table, thus ensuring everyone can get a taste of the various dishes. Chinatown is a big restaurant popular with families, but despite its size, and the fact that it is often completely full, service never faltered. Grant donation St Luke’s Hospice has received a special donation from the Freemasons in memory of HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. The Mark Benevolent Fund is the official charity of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons, a masonic organisation based at Mark Masons’ Hall in London. The St Luke’s gift of £3,000 has been made as part of a £1.3 million wider grant distributed to more than 250 hospices across England and Wales to celebrate the life of the Duke, himself a Freemason, who died in April. The cheque was presented by Philip Haynes representing Britannia Mark Lodge, accompanied by Terry Sweet of Vulcan Mark and Alan Corbridge of Escafeld Mark. “We are delighted to have received this generous donation from the Mark Benevolent Fund,” said St Luke’s Senior Fundraising Manager Clare Collingworth. “Throughout the pandemic, our shops remained closed for many months and all our major fundraising events had to be put on hold, which has had a massive impact on our income streams. “At the same time, our standard of care was never diminished and our services for the people of Sheffield never faltered. “As we look to the future, this donation really does make a great difference and we are very pleased that the Freemasons thought of us and our patients.”

Plea to bosses
Just weeks ago, students were celebrating exam results hardwon during the challenges posed by the pandemic. September is usually when many head to university or college intent on gaining further qualifications. But leading Sheffield skills and training academy The Source is highlighting a huge surge in young people wanting to go straight into work. It also believes yet more will come onto the jobs market before the year is out, as students find college or university life is not for them and decide to quit a view in line with a report in FE Week, which found in 2020 nine per cent had left by the age of 17 and only 51 per cent were still in college at 18. Said Mark Jackson, The Source’s Head of Work-Based Learning: “We urge young people not pursuing further education to opt for apprenticeships. The time-tested apprenticeship programme is unbeatable for the training, mentoring and qualifications it provides, all of which give career progression.” The organisation on Meadowhall Way has 100 vacancies waiting for the right applicants, but it has over 500 educationleavers waiting and predicts that number will increase. “More and more are deciding to avoid student debt and find a career path instead. Each autumn we see a steady influx of people who started college and university courses, but found they were not for them,” added Mark. Contact 0114 263 5721 for help and information.
Tickets for Good launch ‘The Ticket Fund’ From sold-out West End shows to gigs and festivals, Sheffield’s unique ticket-donation enterprise, Tickets For Good, have already sent thousands of NHS workers to the UK’s best events - for just the price of a coffee. Now their new campaign The Ticket Fund will bring businesses large and small together to fundraise for event tickets, which will be donated to hardworking NHS teams nationwide as thanks for their incredible work. The campaign also seeks to direct much-needed cash into the pockets of theatres, nightclubs and event promoters as they struggle to deal with the prolonged effects of COVID. The Ticket Fund is a campaign launched by Tickets for Good, a Sheffield-based ‘tech-for-good’ company that has gone from strength to strength since its launch in 2019. NHS staff can sign-up at the following link to register for free event tickets (https://ticketsforgood.org/nhs/). Whilst this campaign is initially aimed exclusively at NHS staff, Tickets for Good are looking to expand the offer of free event tickets to many more frontline and key workers in the future. Tickets for Good are looking for funders to support the Ticket Fund campaign, businesses and organisations can explore partnership and sponsorship options via theticketfund.org www.sheffieldvibe.com 123
IN BRIEF
Double the magic
Step into your walking shoes
It’s double the singing and dancing as STOS Theatre Company gets set for its return to Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre. Rehearsals for the STOS November premiere of Broadway and West End hit Elf are now well under way. But to ensure that the Lyceum show will go on without any health hitches between 16-20 November, the company has shared the two starring roles among four actors. Playing hero Buddy - the human raised by accident among the elves of the North Pole - will be Richard Granger and Damien Ross. And sharing the role of Jovie, the department store Santa’s Grotto assistant who wins his heart, will be Katie Granger and Ellie Hudson. “This is the first time we have ever shared lead roles but under current circumstances, we were determined that the show will go ahead without any hitches,” said STOS chairman Phil Brownhill. “All our rehearsals are being conducted in strict accordance with current Covid guidelines and we are confident that we will reach opening night with no problems. “Our four lead actors will be sharing three performances each and we think this approach will give us some added security in the current continuing Covid climate.” Elf: The Musical is based on the smash hit Will Ferrell movie about Buddy, a human raised amongst elves, who travels to New York in search of his biological father - with unexpected and hilarious consequences. And when Santa himself is threatened by modern day cynicism as he makes his deliveries on Christmas Eve, it’s down to Buddy and his new family and friends to save the season and bring some traditional festive magic back for the holiday. Get ready for one of Sheffield’s most popular fundraising events… Night Strider is back! Night Strider is the popular St Luke’s Hospice charity spectacular, now in its seventh year, that sees supporters heading off on either a 10k or walking half marathon challenge. In 2020 the event went virtual for the first time as supporters did their own lockdown walks, following Government Covid-19 guidelines. And it’s safety first this year too as participants are again encouraged to choose their own 10k or half marathon route on Saturday 2 October. The Night Strider virtual challenge - sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple - is free to enter, with a medal for everybody who finishes the challenge and returns their sponsorship money. Everybody who signs up will also have the chance to buy a Night Strider T shirt for just £5 - while stocks last. “Night Strider is a great event for the whole family to be a part of,” said St Luke’s Projects and Events Coordinator Rachel Spofforth. “This year we’re asking you to set your own 10k or half marathon course and hopefully get family and friends to join you in the challenge - always following all the latest guidance on social distancing and health safety.” St Luke’s would like to see as many people as possible complete their challenge on Night Strider day, Saturday October 2, though it will be possible to take part throughout the rest of the month. “What we want more than anything is to keep the spirit of Night Strider alive until we can all meet up again, hopefully in 2022,” said Rachel. “Night Strider is always a massive success and this year we need all our walkers to encourage their family and friends to give as much support as possible. Record breaker Art lovers voted with their feet to make September’s Botanical Gardens’ outdoor extravaganza one of the busiest on record. Over 7,500 visitors attended Art In The Gardens with stallholders reporting record sales. Over 300 amateur and professional artists were displaying their work alongside craftspeople of numerous disciplines. Sheffield’s Graysons Solicitors – who returned as premier sponsor of the event for the third year running – enjoyed record breaking numbers entering their children’s art competition. Peter Clark, managing partner at Graysons, said: “We’ve had the privilege of being involved in Art in The Gardens since 2019 and this year must surely rank as the best. It has been a very difficult year with further lockdowns and restrictions and it was a real pleasure to be able to help stage such an important event in the city’s arts’ calendar.” 124 www.sheffieldvibe.com

The importance of making and amending your will correctly BY ANNE ROGERS, PARTNER AND HEAD OF GRAYSONS’ PRIVATE CLIENT TEAM. he correct execution of your will, which includes signing and witnessing it, is vital if your estate is to be distributed according to your wishes. Failing to follow the correct legal procedures regarding making amendments to and witnessing your will can leave it invalid and lead to disputes even if you think you have expressed your wishes verbally. Two recent cases highlight the dangers of these issues. In his 2012 will, the majority of Professor Whalley’s estate was bequeathed to the British University of Dubai. However, a subsequent one-page will, handwritten in 2018, just two months before he died, left his entire estate of £1.7million to his friend, Kambiz Ebrahimi and Mr Ebrahimi’s wife. The university challenged the 2018 will, arguing that it had been incorrectly witnessed. A valid will must be signed by the testator in the presence of two independent witnesses, over the age of 18, who must be present at the same time. Both witnesses must see the testator and each other sign the will. A witness should not be a beneficiary, or spouse or civil partner of a beneficiary. If they are, they lose their right to inherit whatever has been bequeathed to them in the will. In the above case, there were four witnesses to the 2018 will. The first two signed the front page of the will, dating it the day after Professor Whalley had signed it. Both said they had seen him sign it, but not together – so this witnessing was invalid. The second two had signed the back of the will on the same day as the professor. Probate was granted on the basis that both witnesses submitted affidavits to court stating that they had witnessed the will correctly. However, the university claimed that the second two signatures were also invalid as, whilst they
T
were dated at the same time, they too had been added after the professor had signed his will. One of these witnesses then admitted that he had not been present when the will was signed and so the 2018 will was declared invalid: the judge finding in favour of the British University of Dubai and the 2012 will. The second case emphasises the importance of ensuring that your will is up to date and that amendments have been made properly where necessary. Alan and Margaret Bailey were married and had no children. Each was the sole beneficiary and executor of the other’s will. Margaret died in January 2019 and Alan inherited her estate. He had intended to make a new will but didn’t get round to executing it before he died in May 2019.This meant that he had died intestate, and the rules of intestacy dictated that his estate would be distributed to his siblings and the children of a deceased sibling. Margaret had made a MacMillan Cancer Support checklist, which included a reminder to Alan to make a new will and information relating to two cash gifts and a gift of the matrimonial home to Margaret’s siblings. Margaret’s sister said that after Margaret had died, Alan gave her the deeds to the house and said that he and Margaret wanted her to have the house. A judge found that Margaret and Alan’s intentions were
unclear, and, whilst he had sympathy with Margaret’s siblings, he said that “such sympathy cannot justify the court attempting to fit the facts into strict legal requirements if objectively those requirements are not made out.” Margaret’s siblings inherited nothing. Anne Rogers, partner and head of Graysons’ private client team says: “If you want to ensure that your estate goes to the people you intend it to go to, your will must be correctly executed and witnessed and any amendments you wish to make must be properly recorded. You cannot change a will simply by amending it yourself. Overwriting your will renders it invalid. It must be changed by adding a codicil or by writing a new will. “If you wish to make or amend a will, contact our experts now. We will be happy to discuss your own situation and advise on the best options for your individual circumstances.” Graysons Email: wills@graysons.co.uk Tel 01142 050 366 www.graysons.co.uk www.facebook.co.uk/GraysonsLaw Twitter: @Graysonslaw

Crossover with VW The stage is set for a new body shape from the Volkswagen brand – they are launching an SUV coupé on the European market for the first time. Called the Taigo, it is a real crowdpleaser with its trendy crossover body style, raised seating positions, pioneering connectivity and unrestricted suitability for everyday use. The rear of the fiveseater car slopes backwards in the style of a coupé, without restricting headroom in the back seat. With full LED head-lights, an alldigital cockpit and the latest generation of infotainment systems (MIB3) as standard, the SUV coupé sets high technology standards in its class. Every Taigo comes with assistance systems such as the surroundings monitoring system “Front Assist”, including city emergency brake function, and the lane departure warning system “Lane Assist” as standard.
Dynamic addition The Jaguar F-PACE is now more desirable than ever, with the addition of the exclusive new R-Dynamic Black model together with enhanced wellbeing, connectivity and driver assistance technologies across the range. The F-PACE R-Dynamic Black benefits from a distinctive design and an enhanced specification which includes a Black Pack now featuring Gloss Black mirror caps, fixed panoramic roof and privacy glass. Complementing these elements are 20-inch wheels with a Gloss Black finish. Like all other F-PACE models, the R-Dynamic Black is offered with a choice of refined, efficient and responsive Ingenium powertrains, from the 163PS mild hybrid (MHEV) four-cylinder diesel to the 404PS plug-in hybrid (PHEV) petrol. Jaguar is also introducing more technology across the F-PACE range to enhance occupant wellbeing and comfort: there are new smart features which further improve interior air quality, and new driver assistance systems which provide greater levels of support. Connectivity will soon be made even more convenient with the addition of wireless Apple CarPlay® and Wireless Android Auto™. F-PACE R-Dynamic Black is priced from £46,765.
Lots to C - and like A new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is now on sale and every engine in the range features a 48v Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) mild hybrid system. You will be able to choose from two petrol engines – the C 200, which features a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine (204hp); and C 300, which features a 2.0litre four-cylinder unit (258hp).
