A remarkable year
SUPERB EXAM RESULTS ONLY TELL HALF THE STORY AT SHEFFIELD HIGH SCHOOL FOR GIRLS GDST.
It’s been a remarkable year for Sheffield High School for Girls GDST, who have revealed stunning sets of exam results at both GCSE and A-Level.
The school, voted as the top independent secondary school in the north in The Sunday Times Parent Power school survey in 2022, saw 37 per cent of all grades awarded at 9 and 77 per cent at 7-9, compared to a national average of 22 per cent. Students in Maths achieved 77 per cent of grades at 7-9 and 100 per cent at 7-9 in Further Maths at GCSE level. More than 85 per cent of grades awarded across the three sciences were 7-9, 100 per cent of Music grades were 9, and 90 per cent of girls achieved a grade of 7-9 in Drama.
It was another strong year for modern foreign languages at the school with 86
per cent of French grades awarded at 79, 86 per cent of Spanish and 85 per cent German grades were also 7-9.
Head Nina Gunson said: “Our Year 11 students are such a terrific bunch. They have so many talents and these superb results really are only half the story. That said, I know how relived they were to see that their hard work had paid off when they opened their results and they should all feel very proud. I now look forward to welcoming them into the Sixth Form for the next phase of their journey.”
Results at A-Level were equally impressive and challenged current opinion in the media about girls avoiding tough technical subjects. Of the 23 students who studied Maths at A-Level, 100 per cent achieved a grade B or above, with 83 per cent scooping a top
A*/A grade.
Head of Maths at the school, Ben Plowman, is clear about the benefits of studying the subject at this level. He said: “Studying Maths at A-Level provided the opportunity to learn so much more than technical skills and theory. You learn to think and communicate in a mathematical way, reasoning, proving and justifying ideas, connecting knowledge and showing creativity in problem solving.
“I’m so delighted by the results achieved by our students this year which is testament to the hard work and dedication that they have been shown. It’s been a pleasure and privilege to teach them and I wish them the very best for the future.”
Approximately 73,000 fewer A*s and As have been awarded this year
nationally compared with 2022, following ministers’ pledge to return the education system to ‘normal’ after the pandemic. Staff and students are celebrating after 95 per cent of grades were awarded at A*-C with 61 per cent at A*-A.
Twin sisters, Sophie and Anna-Grace Berry proved that mixing arts and science subjects can be a great combination as they collected incredible results, with all six of their grades at A* or A.
Anna studied Spanish, Psychology and Maths and will be commencing her Bachelors degree in Psychology. Sophie will head in a different direction, geographically and academically, as she heads off to study architecture.
Chris Spick, Director of Sixth Form, reflected on the twins’ success after they joined the school as bursary students in Year 12: “I am delighted for both Sophie and Anna on achieving such an outstanding set of exam results. The girls have not only thrived academically, they have embodied our school values, taking on positions of responsibility and full advantage of the wide variety of enrichment opportunities available.”
Students at Sheffield Girls’ also excel in extra-curricular activities and are
involved in a huge amount of community and charity work. In July, pupils stepped back from their usual timetable of lessons, clubs and sports for a day and took part in ‘Philanthropy and Service Day’ which included a number of activities and guest speakers on the topics of philanthropy, giving and service to the community.
Girls in the Infant School learned about food banks and considered different ways to spread positivity through art, whilst the Juniors completed a project to design a future charity event and worked on developing links with local residential homes.
Senior School pupils learned about animal welfare at Heeley City Farm, considered social responsibility and legacy with Royal British Legion, and thought about environmental action as part of a food waste solutions project.
Liz Rodgers, Assistant Head (cocurricular), said: “We are incredibly lucky to have a school bursting full of pupils who feel passionately about their local community and who saw a philanthropic and caring mindset in their everyday behaviours.
“The activities were designed to help them think with more purpose about the
actions they can take and the small changes they can make to benefit those around them and to support good causes locally and indeed across the world.”
Other notable accolades for the school last year included the Infant and Junior School being shortlisted in the Independent Schools Awards for ‘Prep School of the Year’, and being named ‘Sports Primary of the Year’ by Sheffield Federation for School Sports.
“Another year has raced by at Sheffield Girls’ and it has been remarkable,” concludes Head Nina Gunson. “We’ve experienced the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the coronation of King Charles III. We’ve experienced every type of weather imaginable, from baking hot days to over a foot of snow in March, but none of this has slowed us down and our students have been as energetic and resourceful as ever. We cannot wait to see what the new year has in store!”

The psychology of colour in property sales
HOW DO COLOUR CHOICES IMPACT BUYER PERCEPTION?
hen selling a property, it’s often said that a neutral backdrop is best, helping to create feelings of spaciousness and providing the blank canvas that buyers are after. But increasingly the psychology of colour is coming into play in grabbing attention. This means that how your colour choices impact buyer perception of your property could be the difference as to whether you snare that offer or not.
How colour impacts mood and perception
Colour is effective in a potential buyer’s perception of your property because of its direct impact on moods and emotions. Colours are split into warm tones that help to energise when you enter a room and cool tones that help you unwind.
Part of the power of colour is our emotional associations with them, some of which are obvious. In a 2020 study of more than 4,000 people across 30 different countries, for example, more than two-thirds (68 per cent) associated red with love (think love hearts and Valentine’s) while more than half (51 per cent) associated black with sadness (the traditional colour of mourning, at least here in the UK).
The use of colour as therapy
Colours are also used in therapy, a practice known as colorology or chromotherapy. Red is used to energise and invigorate, blue to calm and green to relieve stress and relax. Again, many of these can be related to the associations they provoke – for example, yellow (the colour of the sun) is said to improve mood and happiness while the green of nature and the blue of the sea provide an obvious association with relaxation.
Matching colours to rooms
Incorporating these colours into your property when you are looking to sell can help evoke positive feelings and associations that could clinch a deal. But what colours should you choose? The calming effect of blue can make it a great choice for many rooms, including the bedroom, with people getting the most sleep in a room painted blue. Its anxiety-reducing impact can also make blue a soothing colour for rooms such as studies or offices.
By contrast, brighter colours, such as red which stimulates mind and body (and therefore also appetite), can be a great choice for a kitchen or dining room.
How far should you go?
Furniture retailer Wayfair’s latest TV ad campaign – Escape the Catalogue –debuted in summer and calls time on the ‘age of Greige and samey interiors’ by highlighting a couple trapped in a bland environment of whites and greys. Instead, the couple manage to escape to an environment that’s rich in colour throughout – including walls and furniture. The impact is dramatic, and a great reminder of how attentiongrabbing colour can be.
But you don’t have to take a paintbrush to everything. Simply incorporating a few bold statements, such as a brightly painted front door or letterbox, a high-impact feature wall or brightly-coloured furniture or throws could prove effective in helping your property stand out from the crowd and get you the sale you are seeking.

First steps
IS PRESCHOOL BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT? LIA DESAI LOOKS AT THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY YEARS CARE AND EDUCATION.
Dropping your little one off at nursery for the first time might seem like a daunting experience. Many parents wonder if investing in a quality preschool is even worth it. Would it be better to stay at home with your child during these formative years?
Developing social skills:
Firstly, the structured setting of preschool is an opportunity for children to learn how to follow instructions and develop socially. Raising their hands, taking turns and sharing will help them become more thoughtful individuals.
They are taught to respect others, solve problems and comprise with their peers. They grow emotionally too – by playing with other children and gaining
confidence, they achieve a sense of selfworth and learn to take care of themselves and others.
Preparing them for academic education:
As well as social growth, nurseries provide a foundation for academic learning. From their ABCs to their 123s, children are prepared for the demands of school by practising pre-maths and literacy skills through a variety of activities. While they’re building toys and playing shopkeepers, they’re actually acquiring transferrable life skills.
Furthermore, preschool is an opportunity for children to explore, converse and find answers to their endless array of questions. They can
speak to their teachers and develop relationships with their peers. This promotes language and cognitive skills.
Future prospects:
Studies have found that “at-risk” children, who don’t receive good nursery education, struggle more in later life. They are 25 per cent more likely to drop out of high school and 60 per cent probably won’t go to college. It also claims that 40 per cent are more likely to become a teen parent and 70 per cent of at-risk children are more likely to be arrested for a violent crime. Scary stuff!
So next time you get emotional about saying goodbye at the school gates just remember, you are giving the little darlings a huge leg-up in life.

Installing double glazed windows comes with a range of benefits, and so does maintaining them. Double glazed windows offer the ability to significantly
reduce your energy consumption by maintaining optimal temperatures inside your home.
Here’s a bit more on how it works…
Double glazing features two panes of glass, rather than just the one pane seen in single glazed windows. Double glazing is effective as an insulative measure as it works by trapping a layer of inert or atmospheric gas between the two panes. This creates an insulating barrier that works to reduce heat loss in winter and even reflects potential heat gain in summer on uprated units. Quality double glazing leads not only to lower energy bills, but a more comfortable living environment all year-round.
As a business that puts our customers and the environment first, our philosophy is to replace the pane – not the frame – wherever possible. This significantly reduces the environmental impact of our installations and repairs, whilst also saving you time and money.
Although we know our own installations of double glazed windows are airtight, we are often called out to rectify issues. Window hardware can “fail”, such as locks, handles and hinges, which can lead to the window losing its insulative value as outside air is able to
seep in through gaps in the rubber seals. At Cloudy2Clear, we remedy these problems promptly and professionally. Our work is centred on enhancing the longevity of your home, as well as your windows.

Charming suburbs
BROOMHILL AND RANMOOR ARE SOME OF THE MOST DESIRABLE PLACES TO LIVE IN THE CITY – AND WITH GOOD REASON. WE TAKE A CLOSER LOOK.
eafy, historic, picturesque, and described as ‘pretty’ by the famous poet Sir John Betjeman in the poem ‘An Edwardian Sunday’, the suburb of Broomhill lies two miles west of Sheffield’s city centre.
Over the past two centuries, Broomhill has become one of the most inviting suburbs within the green city – a reflection of what it has to offer, and with a poet laureate praising the small suburb, it comes as no surprise that it is full to the brim of beauty and diversity.
Broomhill is a place of spectacular Victorian architecture, with many of the original features of Victorian villas and shops still remaining as impressive dwellings, and not forgetting the charming characteristics of the local amenities such as the pubs and churches, and one of Sheffield’s most popular spots – The Botanical Gardens which dates back to 1836.
Broomhill’s neighbouring suburbs Fulwood, Ranmoor, Crosspool and Lodge Moor are other stunning locations, with each of them being known for their green spaces, history, and diversity.
Crosspool, like Broomhill is a leafy and peaceful area of the city with fantastic transport links and an abundance of local amenities, and Lodge Moor on the other hand, is idyllic with some of Sheffield’s most picturesque walks starting here which will lead you into the wilderness and passes tranquil waterfalls. If you’re looking to escape the city life for a while, Lodge Moor is the perfect place to do so.
Ranmoor is another more recent suburb and was mostly developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and it features a number of large houses that
were built for the city’s steel magnates, as well as, most notably, a large church, St John’s. This church was opened 24 April 1879 but was almost entirely destroyed by fire on 2 January 1887. All that survived from the original church was the tower and spire, which still stands today.
Despite the beauty and diversity of the areas, house prices in the area are reasonable for the area that they are in, however, they are slightly more expensive than those elsewhere in the city with the average house price within the postcode area (S10) being £404,018 as of September 2023 (according to RightMove).
Broomhill is still a thriving area when it comes to shopping, and even the shops in the suburb hold an incredible amount of history after the city centre’s shops were bombed during the Second World War and were relocated to Broomhill in order to be able to continue business as usual.
The areas each have supermarkets and smaller shops, as well as some independent boutiques and salons located nearby, with the locals never having to travel for more than ten minutes to get their essentials. There are plenty of food and drink places located in each area, making the areas great for those who enjoy socialising with friends and family.
Ideal for families, there are doctors’ surgeries located in Broomhill, Crosspool and Lodge Moor, and there are plenty of great schools in, and around the area including nurseries, primary schools, and secondary schools.
If, on the odd chance the area is short of the amenities that you find yourself needing, there is an abundance of transport links across all of these areas, and the city centre is only an 11-minute drive or bus journey away, as is Sheffield’s train station.

West 10 Bar & Kitchen
West 10 opened its doors in Fulwood in 2002. It has been under new ownership since 2022 and the kitchen’s premium dining offering is now spearheaded by renowned local chef Scott Philliskirk.

Time to celebrate
IT’S
Twenty years is a fantastic milestone for any restaurant to reach and for the team behind Thyme Café, it’s a proud moment.
“We are delighted to reach this fantastic milestone,” said co-director Kevin Alder. “There’s not many restaurants in Sheffield that get to this stage and we want to thank every customer that has dined with us over the years.”
Kevin and his business partners, Anton Corso and Matt Heap, took over the reins 18 months ago and while they have kept lots of things the same, there’s been some new additions too. The most notable is the conversion of the previously unused upstairs into a ‘supper club’. This intimate self-contained space seats just 20 people and in here you can enjoy special events, tasting menus, wine pairings and more.
As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, Thyme Cafe has also launched a celebratory gin, “Thyme XX,” in collaboration with Locksley Distilling Co.
There’s still an air of familiarity about the Broomhill café and if you’ve been at any time over those last 20 years you’ll have a good idea of what to expect. You’ll find the menu displayed on three
huge blackboards which is divided into ‘nibbles’, ‘small plates’, ‘salads’ and ‘mains’. Certain dishes such as the burger, pie of the day and fish ‘n’ chips have become staples over the years and take pride of place today alongside more gastro-style dishes such as harissa-roast cauliflower, flank steak and white truffle arancini. Alongside the blackboard menu, there’s some specials too.
We started with a selection of breads, chilli oil and hummus (£5) before sharing hearty plates of salt and pepper squid, chilli and spring onions (£7.50) and lamb chop and Greek salad (£8). The Mediterranean-inspired dishes were perfect for a summer’s evening and well matched with a bottle of Ca’ Tesore pinot grigio rose (£28).
For main course my wife stuck to a lighter theme, ordering the seared salmon fillet, which was served on a citrus-dressed tabouleh salad of bulgar wheat, cherry tomatoes, red and spring onions, parsley, mint and pea shoots (£22). It was a sizeable plate of food but one where all the flavours worked harmoniously and the salmon had been cooked perfectly.
I took inspiration from the specials, choosing the roast Barbary duck breast,
duck fat braised fondant potato, caramelised root vegetables, sauteed baby spinach, red wine and cherry sauce (£26). Cooked pink and with crispy skin, the duck was delicious and paired well with the subtle, sweet flavours provided by the vegetables and sauce.
We’d left room for dessert and a crème caramel with lemon shortbread (£8) and raspberry parfait with lemon syllabub (£8) provided a sweet and sharp finish respectively.
After 20 years, Thyme Café’s winning formula is still intact offering familiar flavours and a fantastic, vibrant atmosphere. We loved it.
It’s open Tuesday to Friday for lunch and dinner sittings and all day at weekends.

Facing up to a big challenge
David Inman Opticians has experienced the busiest year in its history. The demand for specialist lenses for children to help reduce short-sightedness (myopia) is also increasing.
James Allen, Optometrist at the Broomhill branch explains more: “Myopia (short-sightedness) is one of the biggest challenges in our industry. More and more children are being diagnosed with myopia due to a reduction in time outdoors and a significant increase in close tasks such as looking at tablets and phones.
“The increase in close tasks promotes growth of the eye which in turn makes the eye more short-sighted giving problems with distance vision. The rate of changes we have seen in children has been worrying and parents have sought a solution to try and slow down the changes.
“Reducing the rate of sight change
not only means the child will have more functional vision as an adult, but more importantly significantly reduces the risk of associated eye diseases such as
Glaucoma, Macular and retinal disease thus reducing the need for additional hospital treatment.”
David Inman Opticians has a solution. Their Opticians are fully accredited to supply Miyosmart and Stellest spectacle lenses aswell as MiSight myopia control contact lenses. All of these lens products feature groundbreaking technology which not only give clear vision at all distances. They also slow down growth of the eye and on average reduce the rate of change in the prescription by around 60 per cent.
All children supplied with myopia control glasses have six-monthly tests which include wide angle Optomap retinal imaging to detect and monitor retinal changes.

Forged in history
The Company of Cutlers, which celebrates its 400-year anniversary next year, has helped to shape Sheffield’s past – and continues to shape its present and future. We spoke to incoming Master Cutler Charles Turner to find out more.
e honest, how many times have you walked past the steel doors of the Cutlers’ Hall in the city centre and wondered what’s inside? Despite standing on the same site since 1638, the striking building still remains a mystery to many Sheffielders.
But there’s no great secret, in fact outside of the many functions and events the hall holds, the public are encouraged to step inside and marvel at its grandeur as well as its extensive collection of cutlery, silver and grand paintings.
The Cutlers’ Hall was built by the Company of Cutlers, which celebrates its 400-year anniversary on 23 April next year, and serves as an example as to what has been achieved and what can still be achieved in the manufacturing industry.
The first Hall was built in 1638, with two later halls were built on the same site. The accounts show that the Company bought the land for the first hall for £69.12s.
This first hall was demolished in May 1725 and the site cleared for the building of the second hall. However, by 1827, the state of this second hall was causing a great deal of public concern. A letter appeared in the Sheffield Independent: “Its exterior appearance is unworthy of the Company to whom it belongs”. In 1832, following the demolition of the second Hall, the present Cutlers’ Hall, the third on this site, was built. It was designed by two architects, Samuel Worth and Benjamin Broomhead Taylor, who had both submitted plans, but when the Company was unable to choose between these plans, the two architects agreed to work together. The building cost the Company
£8,846.12s.1d, with a further £1,092.3s.2d spent on furnishings.
In 1867, the Hall was extended to the rear, with the addition of the New Banqueting Hall on the first floor with the Hadfield Hall beneath and in 1888, the frontage was extended westward.
It is a Grade 2* Listed building, privately owned by the Company of Cutlers, and is considered to be one of the finest Livery halls in the country.
Inside the hall you’ll find extensive archives, which record the internal administration of the Company. But as the Company was so closely linked to the development of Sheffield and its core industries, these can also shed light on both local and family histories.
Perhaps more appealing to the passing public is the Hall’s silver collection, which features at least one piece of Sheffield hallmarked silver for every year since 1773, the year the Sheffield Assay Office was founded.
Much of the historical items were gifted to the Company by Stuart Goodwin (later Sir Stuart). He purchased a collection that had been assembled by Thomas Bradbury and featured some 500 pieces dating from 1773 to 1840. It wasn’t until 1999 that the run of silver, 1840-1944 was finally completed.
Alongside the silver collection sits the cutlery collection. Cutlery, in Sheffield manufacturing terms, means ‘things that cut’. This includes, knives, scissors, shears, edge tools, and so forth and the Company has a varied collection of knives, scissors and razors. Many of the knives have been given to the Company and survive from the 19th century, mainly because they are impressive with large blades and decorative handles.
Typical of these are the ‘Bowie knives’. Around 1914, Harry Brearley was a Sheffield metallurgist, endeavouring to produce a usable stainless steel for table knife blades. A framed group of knives, which shows his early experimental blades, was presented to the Company in 1936 by Harry Brearley.
In the 1990s, the Company received a collection of over 1,400 open razors, commonly called ‘cut-throat’ razors. These show a wide range of styles and materials, from the everyday razors to highly decorative items, which might have gilded blades and carved ivory handles.
The Company’s collection of paintings are mainly portraits of Masters Cutler and of men associated with Sheffield’s history.
Manufacturing has been vital to the development of Sheffield over the centuries and still plays an important role today.
“It’s what makes Sheffield, Sheffield,” said Charles Turner, who becomes Master Cutler of the Company of Cutlers on 3 October. “If you consider we sit here [in the Cutlers’ Hall] and less than 500m away there’s a factory selling high quality knives all over the world, most people wouldn’t believe that in a city centre these days.
“And then consider that Forgemasters is a mile-and-a-half in that direction and Swann Morton is a mile-and-a-half the other way… the city centre is ringed by factories. We are a manufacturing city and we sometimes forget that.”
The Company of Cutlers was established by a Parliamentary Act of Incorporation in 1624, countersigned by King James I, and essentially exists to
maintain the standards and quality of Sheffield-made cutlery and steel products and to promote the name of ‘Sheffield’ on the world stage.
The Master Cutler is vital to this latter role and will spend much of his 365 days in office promoting Sheffield regionally, nationally and internationally. Charles joins a long unbroken line that can be traced right back to the first Master Cutler in 1624, which was a certain Robert Sorsby. Charles also follows in his father Neil’s footsteps, who held the position in 2003.
Charles is the managing director of Durham-Duplex, which has been manufacturing in the city since 1910. The Petre Street company has moved, over the years, from producing safety razor blades used for shaving to machine knives and industrial blades and has subsidiaries in Europe, the US and South-East Asia.
“All Masters are manufacturers, which brings a depth of knowledge and credibility,” commented Charles. “When people ask what’s happening in Sheffield, we know that three of the four electric arc furnaces in the UK are in this region and what steels they make. We know the capabilities of various companies and, for example, we know how well the forging industry is doing… I could go on and on...”
There are some 360 members, called Freemen, of the Company of Cutlers, all of whom qualified on joining by being a director or senior executive of a manufacturing organisation or work in the field of research in support of, manufactured items. This provides a network of people involved in manufacturing who can share ideas and opportunities.
“They’re all experts in their fields and know what they’re talking about,” added Charles. “In my view there’s no-one better placed to promote Sheffield manufacturing to the world than the actual manufacturers.”
Sheffield has long been synonymous with quality and therefore subject to the attention of counterfeiters. This protection is still required and the Company is periodically engaged in actions to prevent abusive use of the name Sheffield.
Although the Trade Marks Act of 1994 closed down the Sheffield Register, the Cutlers’ Company still controls the ‘Sheffield’ Certification Mark (CM). The name Sheffield is protected and the Cutlers’ Company acts on behalf of the Secretary of State for Business in the approval of the use of the word ‘Sheffield’ in any business name or title.
In practical terms, this means that anyone wishing to use the name Sheffield when registering a Company has therefore to seek a letter of nonobjection from us before it can be registered at Companies House.
The ‘Made in Sheffield’ mark was launched in 2005 and now has more than 400 licence holders. It is in demand as a sign of quality which adds value to products as a point of Origin. The brand is co-owned by the Company of Cutlers, the Sheffield City Council and the Chamber of Commerce.
Part of the way the Company ensure the continuous quality is through education. The ‘Better Learners, Better Workers’ programme started in 2010 and was developed to provide young people with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they will need to be successful in the world of work. At present, the
programme is working with ten pupils at each of 14 schools across the region.
“We can make anything, and make it as well as before, in this city,” added Charles. “But one of the problems going forward will be skills. We do need to work hard to make young people aware of manufacturing and engineering as a career. Schools do not teach the broad spectrum of technical skills that we need so it’s our job to raise awareness of manufacturing in schools so we can then develop the talents of trainees, apprentices and graduates in the workplace.”
The programme goes a long way to redressing this balance and will hopefully start to provide the manufacturers of the future.
Charles’s main remit as Master Cutler will be to deliver the 400-year anniversary and plans are still being finalised for the celebration next year. It’s a remarkable achievement for a Company that seems to go quietly about its business, at least in the eyes of the general public. But in manufacturing terms, they’re a big-hitter and proud to be promoting Sheffield to the world.
“If I could have one final word,” said Charles. “It would be, ‘Tell the world, it’s Made in Sheffield.”
Hear! Hear!
So next time you walk past the Cutlers’ Hall, you’re walking past 400 years of history, a history that has so often been the key to the city’s future.
Relieving stress on the big day
1. Create a self-care routine
Before your wedding, it is useful to develop a few techniques to help you relax and relieve stress. This can be completely tailored to suit your own preferences and may require a few experiments to figure out what you enjoy. A few ideas could be a spa day (at a spa or at home), going for a run or walk, or dipping into a lake for a cold water swim.
2. Make as many lists as you need
If you find yourself up late at night worrying about all the tasks you need to do - don’t wait until the morning to write them down. Getting everything onto paper as soon as it enters your mind is crucial as it stops that nagging feeling. Invest in a good planner and bullet journal to have a designated wedding planning tool.
3. Feel grounded and present with mindfulness and meditation
A myriad of useful mindfulness and meditation tutorials await you on TikTok and YouTube. The power of mindfulness and breathing exercises cannot be underestimated, they are extremely beneficial techniques for clearing your mind and focusing on what is important.
4. Remind yourself of your priorities
As a bride, it is easy to confuse your role and end up feeling like an overworked party planner. You need to make sure your day is everything YOU want it to be instead of stressing about the expectations of others. Those you invite are freeloading off your generosity, there is no need to over-spend or over-indulge on the socalled perfect wedding and focus on the core memories that really matter.
5. Prioritise, prioritise, prioritise
To help keep things in perspective, prioritize the essentials—those things that are super important to make this your dream wedding. Then refer to your “must” list over and over during the planning process, so you don’t go down a spiral of DIY projects you saw on Pinterest or feel the need to constantly upgrade your flower arrangements. Repeatedly checking in with your initial goals will help you stay on track—and on budget.
7. Go on a Date
With your fiance… obviously. Many couples say that the stress of wedding planning can put a strain on their relationship. To combat this, give yourself private time to reconnect and remind yourself of what it’s all about. The way to ensure a stress-free date is to ban the dreaded W word to avoid it turning into another wedding planning session.
8. Don’t Invite Her
When it comes to wedding dress shopping, many brides fear the judgment of some of their closest friends or even their mothers. You only need a little bit of support from people who will back your final decision despite their own fashion tastes and it’s completely up to you who gets to be there. Dress shopping should be fun and stress-free, the wedding day is much more important.
9. Choose the best Maid of Honour
6. Create a Plan B
Create a list of all the potential disaster scenarios that could happen on the wedding day. These could be a change in weather, the dress not fitting, or a fight in the family. Write down anything that could happen and then provide a counterpoint and alternative option to each imaginary scenario. Having a plan B is essential and you will always be able to overcome and adapt to surprise situations.
Maid of Honour duties start from the moment they accept the role. Choose someone who you believe will relieve your stress, be there for you and makes the best out of every situation. She (or he) needs to have positive energy and the confidence to challenge anyone who is causing a problem.
10. Prepare a Wedding Survival Kit
Bring along a pack of bridal essentials like Paracetamol, plasters, hair ties, safety pins, deodorant, mints and other lastminute mini-emergency items that are frequently needed. These can be kept in the Maid of Honour’s bag or by the bathroom sinks.

Magical moments
DUNSTON HALL COMBINES TRADITION
Nestled on the edge of the Peak District between Chesterfield and Sheffield, Dunston Hall offers the best of both worlds for your wedding party. The charming hall, which dates back to the 16th century, is steeped in history yet offers all the modern touches that you associate with a luxury property.
It’s already achieving the aims set by owners David and Lynsey Harrison, who completely refurbished the hall and estate in 2021 with the intention of creating the most magical wedding and events venue.
During the six-month renovation, the couple left no stone unturned, getting expert advice on every aspect, from choosing the right coving to fit in with the age of the building to sourcing antique furniture sympathetic to its history. They even sought counsel on choosing the right colour scheme. This attention to detail is evident throughout the building.
Not resting on their laurels, work has continued at the estate and David and Lynsey have now added a further function room – The Stables – to their celebratory offering. This renovated space can accommodate between 80120 people and is completely selfcontained with its own bar and bathrooms as well as having access to a charming walled garden.
Original features characterise The Stables with beams delightfully remaining exposed in a stunning vaulted ceiling whilst parts of the feeding stalls can be seen and the former ‘loft’ now forms a mezzanine level which can house a band or DJ for your celebration.
The Stables is complemented by the Garden Room, which is fully licenced for civil ceremonies, as well as the hall’s Dining Room, which is suitable for smaller celebrations of up to 40 people.
Dunston Hall is hired on an exclusive basis – from 12pm to 12pm the following day – meaning you get
WITH MODERN LUXURY –AND NOW HAS EVEN MORE SPACE FOR YOUR WEDDING PARTY THANKS TO THE ADDITION OF A STUNNING NEW FUNCTION SPACE.
sole use of the hall and grounds for the duration of your stay. There are ten luxury bedrooms, which can sleep up to 23 people, including a stunning honeymoon suite with four-poster bed, dressing room, huge bathroom and amazing views over the grounds of the hall.
“We’re a blank canvas for you to create your own special day,” said operations director, Mark Lancashire. “We’re completely flexible; every little detail can be chosen by you. Food, drink, entertainment… you name it, Dunston Hall can accommodate it.”
The Dunston Hall experience begins as soon as you turn off the B6050 onto the gravel driveway, which leads you up to the stone dwelling. Step through the imposing front door and you’ll find a grand staircase separating a dining room to the left and reception room and library to the right. At the back of the hall on the ground floor is a large kitchen as well as the entrance to a cellar bar, complete with video games and a karaoke machine. Upstairs you’ll find the luxury en-suite bedrooms, which have all been individually designed.
The Hall’s five acres of gardens provide plenty of photo opportunities and are the perfect place for your family and friends to relax before or after your celebration. Whether you choose to play croquet on the perfectly manicured lawns or take a dip in one of the hot tubs, there’s something for your whole party to enjoy. A newly-installed path network through the gardens makes it easy for you to roam at your leisure and take in the stunning sights.
“Here at Dunston Hall we like to make the experience about you,” said Claire Bolton, sales and marketing manager. “From weddings to bespoke events such as birthdays, blessings, anniversaries and family get-togethers, we can design and offer you a truly unforgettable experience that will hold precious memories.”
And work is still ongoing at Dunston Hall, with workmen converting a further barn into a heritage centre, which will house local artisans and businesses. A Christmas market and workshops are already in the planning stage and more events are scheduled for the future, largely enabled by the flexible space offered by The Stables.
Dunston Hall truly offers something different, putting you and your party at the heart of your celebration in a venue
where you can really relax and enjoy the experience. Why not contact one of their team who will be happy to discuss the various options on offer.

IT HAS BEEN FIVE YEARS SINCE PA JEWELLERY BECAME AN EMPLOYEE OWNERSHIP TRUST. HERE, THE STAFF REFLECT ON THE CHANGE AND HOW
When Mike Marsh sadly passed away in February 2018, he had already sowed the seeds for succession to ensure that PA Jewellery would prosper for years to come. These future plans were centred around a move into becoming an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) and this month marks five years since this change came into effect.
Mike started PA Jewellery in 1976, was a family man at heart and instilled and encouraged these family values at the jewellers, which remain today.
Current directors Ian Cookson, Suzanne Thompson and Amy CampbellJones, alongside Mike’s wife Pam and daughter Susan who serve as nonexecutive directors, have maintained these values which have seen the business thrive over the last 47 years.
An Employee Ownership Trust enables all staff to have a share in the business and of course a vested interest in seeing it succeed. It’s a model that seems well suited to such a close-knit business and Ian Cookson has been delighted with how the last five years have progressed.
“I wouldn’t say the EOT has changed things too much, mainly because of the culture Mike had instilled before, our core values still remain,” he said. “We’ve always been open and staff have had a high level of involvement and, if anything, the EOT has only enhanced that.”
There’s lots of familiar faces at PA Jewellery and the long-serving team has been complemented by a new generation in recent years, who have brought their own ideas and enthusiasm to the trust.
New staff members are eligible to join the EOT after working at PA Jewellery for 12 months.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, PA Jewellery responded positively and, thanks to continued support from its loyal customers, have flourished in the successive years.
“When the pandemic happened, everyone shouldered the responsibility and worked together and we did really well,” said workshop manager Deborah Rootham, who has been with the family business for 27 years.
“I think the EOT has been a positive thing, it’s pulled us all together. We’re all much more involved and it feels like we have more input.”
PA Jewellery always adapted to shifting trends and customer patterns which, at
IT HAS AFFECTED THE JEWELLERY BUSINESS.
present, is seeing them do much more bespoke work. As a business they have embraced new technology and now have a full-time CAD designer, Issy Starkiss, to complement their existing workshop, which means they can combine modern techniques with traditional skills.
Suzanne Thompson sees the quirkiness of PA, famously appointed at The Old Bank in Commonside, as one of its strengths.
“PA is a little off the beaten track, it is a destination and once customers are here they find it’s not what they have come to expect from a high street jewellers,” she said. “The staff are much more involved, you get people coming in asking for specific members of staff because they’ve built up that relationship.”
The genesis of PA Jewellery began when Mike visited an acquaintance, Ron Carr, at his Sheffield based workshop in 1976, who’s name later became synonymous with quality silverware. At the time, Ron was manufacturing silver ingots with enlarged hallmarks and Mike thought he may be able to sell these via an advert in a popular Sunday paper.
In 1976, PA Jewellery sold less than 100! However, what Mike hadn’t
anticipated was that 1977 was the Queens Sliver Jubilee and for that year only there was a special silver hallmark. The ingots became collector's items and they ended up selling thousands. Mike’s attic became a jewellery workshop as he cut lengths of chain, fixed clasps to each end, slid the ingots on and packed them carefully in small Union Jack boxes.
It soon became obvious he could no longer continue working out of the attic and Mike made the huge decision in 1978 to purchase the Old Bank, Commonside. A combination of Mike’s ability to take risks and the Queen reaching her Silver Jubilee led to the well respected business that is PA Jewellery.
Whilst current staff members appear to be thriving under the EOT, one person is particularly proud of the path the business is taking.
“Mike put his whole life into PA Jewellery and he never lorded it over his staff. They were his equals and colleagues and he wanted to bring out the best in them,” said Pam Marsh.
“In fact he thought the world of them, and they felt the same about him. The EOT is exactly what he wanted and he would be so proud and happy to see this.
“The staff are now majority shareholders and each one of those staff are jewellers, not shop assistants; they are all specialists in their own right.”
The Employee Ownership Trust is not a model suited to every business but appears to be one well-suited to PA Jewellery and its 24 staff members. They are very much a ‘family’, which is evident as soon as you step through the doors.
Mike Marsh would be proud too.

CHARLES BRADSHAW’S TRIP INTO DERBYSHIRE UNCOVERS A DELIGHTFUL VARIED MENU AND ORNAMENTAL BIRDS APLENTY.
The Peacock Inn is located on the main road through the charming village of Cutthorpe, just a few miles shy of the Peak District National Park. The approach road, in either direction, affords farmland views and assorted, quaint buildings. An ample car park sits before the long stone-built Inn, with outdoor seating and a children’s play area. The entrance opens to a large stocked bar with comfortable seating and a grand fireplace.
On our arrival, we were promptly escorted by General Manager Charlotte Marsden to our dining area; a tastefully decorated small annex, just beyond the bar with plush seating, resplendent peacock patterned wallpaper and stylish diptych artwork adorning the wall. Upon seating, we began to peruse the menu of drinks and dishes. I selected a bottle of dandelion & burdock (£2.95) while my companion opted for a pint of Farmers Blonde (£4.10). I chose the Monkfish scampi (£9.95) while across the table, Tempura chicken strips were the starting dish for my fellow diner. My scampi was delivered piping hot, alongside a pot of tasty homemade tartare sauce and a lemon wedge. The hearty pieces of fish
were delightfully encapsulated in a light crispy batter and eagerly devoured. The Tempura chicken strips (£7.75) arrived with a crispy batter coating and a pot of katsu curry sauce. The crunchy batter encasing the succulent chicken inside, paired nicely with the sweet, rich sauce.
As stated on the menu, all dishes are made fresh to order, meaning a nice pause between courses can be enjoyed. Main course options are plentiful, with vegan and vegetarian choices available.
My companion’s lager battered haddock fillet (£15.75), was a large portion on a foundation of doublecooked chunky chips and ramekins of mushy peas and tartare sauce. The light crispy crust of the fish broke open to reveal plump, juicy flakes - and no bones in sight. My 8oz 28-day aged sirloin steak (£24.50) was requested mediumrare - ensuring the meat is juicy, tender and packed with flavour. It certainly filled the plate, alongside chunky chips, mushrooms, grilled tomato and balsamic dressed salad. The beef sliced nicely with each mouthful being pinkish on the outside and deeper red inside. Alas, we both reluctantly admitted defeat, failing to fully clear our plates due to the
generous portion sizes.
We had left a little room to sample the puddings. My sticky toffee pudding (£7.25) was lavished with thick toffee sauce and an ample serving of ice cream. My dining companion selected Key lime pie (£7.25) accompanied with Chantilly cream, lemon sorbet and fresh berries. With both desserts polished off, our meal concluded with decaf latte (£3) and an Americano (£2.50).
The Peacock Inn provides a feast of exceptionally varied menu choices and is ideally located as an end or starting off point for a visit to the Chatsworth Estate, the market town of Chesterfield or a walk round the nearby Linacre Reservoirs.

Rolling pins at the ready...
f life give you lemons, don’t make lemonade, make lemon tarts!
This was the challenge set to four chefs competing in this year’s Westside’s Young Chef of the Year Competition, who were asked to produce their own twist on this classic dessert.
The destination for this cook-off – or should that be bake-off? – was the MSK Academy Kitchen at The Sheffield College and the overall winner will be revealed at our annual Restaurant & Bar Awards, to be held at the OEC on Monday 30 October.
Our competing chefs were Oska Ready
of DN1 Delicatessen and Dining, Max Heath of the Wortley Arms, Ashish Anand of The George, Hathersage, and Charlie Downham of West 10 Bar & Kitchen.
Judging the 120-minute pastry-themed cooking challenge was Len Unwin, Curriculum Team Leader of Catering and Hospitality at The Sheffield College, along with colleagues Andy Gabbitas, Neil Taylor and Sasi Moddaiandy.
This is the second time we’ve hosted the competition at The Sheffield College; over the years the college has built a strong national reputation for educating and training the next generation of catering and hospitality talent.
Students learn in industry standard facilities and achieve the qualifications, industry knowledge and skills to go further in their careers. The College has strong links with industry including staff membership of the Master Chefs of Great Britain.
Employers support the curriculum. In catering and hospitality, the MSK Professional Cookery Academy and the MSK Patisserie Skills Academy are backed by top chef and college alumnus Rupert Rowley and his employer Chesterfield-based business MSK Ingredients. academies programme, co-designed with employers, which runs across several different curriculum subjects.
The College hosts high profile competitions such as Skills for Chefs, in partnership with the University of Sheffield, that attracts the country’s leading culinary experts – you can now add Westside’s Young Chef of the Year Competition to that list!
The College’s Silver Plate Restaurant, which earned an AA College Rosette Highly Commended award, is open to the public and offers high quality cuisine whilst training students in the skills that the industry needs and under the supervision of experienced staff.
Our chefs arrived punctually and soon made themselves at home in the kitchens, getting prepped for a 10am
start. Once underway it soon became clear that they were incredibly focused and barely a word was spoken as the chefs prepared their dishes. Judges Len and Sasi circulated the room throughout, asking questions, tasting dishes and offering advice.
As the metaphorical buzzer sounded to mark the end of the competition, our chefs presented their dishes who then judged them on hygiene, waste and working methods, technical skills, colours and textures, presentation and, of course, taste.
For his dish, Charlie made lemon thyme bruleed Amalfi lemon tart with sour lemon pastels and a crème fraiche ice cream. Max served up a lemon and basil tart, black pepper sweet pastry and aerated honey and yoghurt whilst Oska’s

twist came in the form of a lemon parfait, sable biscuit and vanilla creme Chantilly. Ashish’s saffron lemon tart with stem-ginger pastry, smoked strawberry and lemongrass coulis, freeze dried raspberries, clotted cream and Italian meringue was served under a smoke-filled cloche.
We can’t say much more other than all four dishes were of a very high standard, beautifully presented with some great tastes and textures – and no soggy bottoms!
All eyes will be on the Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards 2023 when the winning young chef will be revealed.
Westside would like to say a big thank you to Len Unwin and The Sheffield College for hosting the event.
Ashish Anand The George
Twenty-four-year-old Ashish is our oldest competitor and his passion and eagerness to learn more about food has taken him on a culinary trip around the world.
“It is a great job that is allowing me to meet new people and cultures, and share experiences and ideas from different countries cuisines,” he said.
Ashish’s main ambition is to constantly develop and learn to be a better chef and human, so at the right time he will have all the skill sets needed to eventually become a head chef and run a successful kitchen in a healthy environment.
Charlie Downham West 10 Bar & Kitchen
Charlie worked as an apprentice for three years before earning the role of chef de partie at West 10, working under the tutelage of Scott Philliskirk. It’s given him the drive to go further and he’s happiest when making ingredients come to life and being creative with dishes.
“Winning the Young Chef of the Year award will give me the extra push to make sure I have a successful career and hopefully inspire the next generation,” he said. “I’m learning every moment and hopefully one day I can pass on knowledge and advice too.”
Max Heath The Wortley Arms
Max, our youngest competitor, is no stranger to the Westside Young Chef of the Year competition after taking part last year while he was still a student at The Sheffield College. His attendance at our awards last year actually provided the springboard for him to launch his professional career at the north Sheffield gastropub.
Max utilises fresh local produce to create exciting dishes and aims to work his way up within the industry to a head chef position with the ambition to possibly own his own restaurant.
Oska Ready DN1 Delicatessen & Dining
Oska forms part of the chef team at DN1 alongside out other contestant, Adam Barratt. He’s extremely passionate about being a chef and would one day like to own his own restaurant and achieve a Michelin star.
“Being a chef is more than just a profession for me—it’s a lifelong passion that ignites my soul and fuels my creativity,” he said. “In the kitchen, I’m an artist, and my canvas is the plate. I love how cooking allows me to blend flavours, textures, and colours to create sensations that tantalise the tastebuds and shock the mind.”

This year’s event, which takes place at the OEC on Monday 30 October, will be the third year running we have held the event here and if the previous two years are anything to go by, 2023’s ceremony is going to be another fantastic affair.
Rewinding back to last year, over 250 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multipurpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It was the perfect fit for our event; extremely well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.
When it came to the 2022 Westside & Southside Restaurant & Bar Awards, sponsored by I Grunwerg Ltd, competition was keen. The top prize went to Rafters, a small but stunning restaurant on Oakbrook Road that just seems to get better and better. The 3 AA rosette restaurant, owned by Alistair Myers and Tom Lawson, flies the flag for fine dining in the city and we loved everything about it - the food, the wine, the service and the overall attention to detail. It’s just a lovely experience and well deserving of our flagship award. Judging by the huge round of applause that greeted the announcement - made
by our compere Chris Wilson, the former managing editor of RMC Media – it was a popular choice and welldeserved.
Each of our 18 winners received an engraved plaque, presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp.

Comfort food
s we move into autumn, you can imagine The Bull’s Head Inn being one of those cosy, country pubs with a roaring log fire, homemade food and lively conversation. Basically, everything you’d want from such an establishment.
We visited at the tail-end of summer when the sun was still shining so there was no fire (just an empty hearth) but plenty of lively conversation and, thankfully, the promise of home-cooked food.
This is all complemented by original features such as oak-panelled walls, beamed ceilings, horse brasses, copper kettles and lots of pictures of bulls.
Should you visit during warmer weather, there’s plenty of outdoor seating both at the front and the rear of the pub, which sits in the tiny hamlet of Foolow, just off the A623 and not too far from Eyam.
The family-owned pub also has three rooms for overnight stays, as well as a two-bedroom apartment, and opens all day, every day.
The menu at The Bull’s Head changes seasonally and features everything from pub classics (pies, burgers, fish ’n’ chips)
to more refined plates of food (Cheddar custard tart, dark chocolate marquise).
We were in the mood for some proper pub grub - IPA beer battered fish and chips with crushed peas and tartare sauce (£17.95) and homemade pie of the day (steak and ale) served with buttery mashed potato, roasted carrot and onion, seasonal greens and gravy (£16.95) satisfied our cravings and then some.
But first we tucked into starters that had more than a touch of restaurant finesse about them. Derbyshire pork belly, soy caramel, pineapple chutney, herb salad (£6.95) was sweet and sticky – and deliciously tender – whilst my wife’s roasted beetroot salad, served with truffled whipped ricotta, pickled beetroots, and an oat and cheddar crumb (£6.95) was summery and fresh.
My crispy battered fish was complemented by good, chunky chips and peas flavoured with a hint of mint and ticked all the right boxes for flavour and presentation. The steak and ale pie was wholesome and hearty and incredibly filling.
My two children took advantage of the children’s menu, choosing a mini Baslow beef burger, chips and garden peas and
chicken goujons, chips and garden peas (both £6.95).
To our surprise my wife and I still had room for dessert; perhaps not surprisingly, as did my children who both chose chocolate ice cream (£3.50). I chose from the specials, opting for a light and tangy lemon tart with meringue and raspberry (£6.95) whilst my wife selected a yoghurt panna cotta served with roasted plum, honey and baked oats (£6.95). Both were presented beautifully, well balanced and provided a sweet finish to our enjoyable meal.
The Bull’s Head has specials that run throughout the week, including Thursday pie and a pint for £16.95, Fish Fridays –two fish ‘n’ chips and two drinks £35, and Sunday roasts.

IN THE HEART OF THE COUNTRYSIDE YOU’LL FIND A COSY PUB WITH LOTS TO LOVE, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
A real treat
ormerly a banking building built over 100 years ago, Bank House, Hathersage, has the perfect blend of tradition versus modernity; striking architecture, a laidback Mediterranean vibe, and a sleek interior, all beautifully set against the stunning backdrop of the Peak District hills.
Arriving on a gloriously sunny midsummer’s evening, the cocktail bar and its outside area was heaving with lively chatter and laughter and the clinking of glasses. Our table was in the upstairs restaurant, nestled into a cosy nook overlooking the picturesque scenery.
To continue the summer feeling, I opted for a Rose Garden Spritz (£9.50) featuring notes of strawberry, rhubarb and rose: a distinctively floral twist on the classic Aperol Spritz (£9.50) that my partner chose.
The food menu had us debating for a good while; small plates or salads? Sharers or mains? We eventually chose three small plates to be served as starters (although the option of having them alongside a sharer or main meal is also available) and a main meal each. My husband’s gambas and chorizo (£11.50) certainly packed a punch with its picante
chorizo and chilli, whilst my Asian pork bao buns (£9.50) were a sticky, sweet treat. The pork was succulent and bursting with flavour thanks to the delicious pomegranate and Gochujang spiced sauce. Our third small plate, panfried padrón peppers (£8), was shared between us, adding a zesty piquant kick.
Original and exciting dishes are at the heart of what Bank House do and my main of sea bass paccheri (£22) was a delightful twist on the usual fish pasta dish. Perfectly al-dente paccheri pasta were served in a white wine sauce and topped with a delicate fish fusion comprising of lobster meat, tiger prawns, clams, lumpfish, pan-fried sea bass, caviar and not forgetting the finishing touch of the coral tuille.
My husband’s choice of the 8oz locally sourced sirloin steak (£28) was cooked exactly as requested, medium rare, and served with a crisp onion fritter, sweet vine cherry tomatoes, Portobello mushroom and of course, a pot of golden fries.
As the sun began to set, we finished our evening with a dessert each. My inner child couldn’t resist being drawn to the cookie dough (£9) which contained
all my childhood delights and more: baked cookie dough, Belgian chocolate chips, salted caramel, cinder toffee and a melting dollop of creamy vanilla ice cream. Heaven. My husband’s coconut panna cotta (£8.50) was soft and elegant and featured the intriguing ‘strawberry textures’ as enticingly described on the menu. This consisted in strawberries served multiple ways; sliced, freeze-dried and served in a sorbet. Simply charming.
The staff were wonderfully attentive throughout, and both the food and service were truly excellent. Dining out at Bank House is a real treat and an indulgence that should not be missed.

Deliciously messy
THE DARK HORSE MAYBE THE GO-TO VENUE FOR DRINKS BUT DON’T OVERLOOK
THE FOOD, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
S
ince opening 18 months ago, The Dark Horse has become a clear favourite. Not just for me personally but for the scores of people that seem to frequent this former Lloyds Bank on a regular basis.
Owner Andy Grice and manager Adam Webster set out to create a community pub where everyone is welcome and seems to have achieved this in spades. You’ll find a real mix of people as well as the odd four-legged friend who clearly appreciate the fantastic selection of drinks, food and regular events such as Monday quiz nights. It’s got a lovely atmosphere that’s welcoming and buzzy.
I often drive through Banner Cross and it’s great to see that there are always plenty of people in with weekends proving especially popular when you’ll see a raft of drinkers occupying the outdoor tables and benches (weather permitting).
We arrived on a warm and pleasant summer’s evening and bypassed the alfresco option (they were already filling up) in favour of a comfortable booth inside. The bar has been tastefully decorated with lots of light-coloured woods and green tiles and the full-length windows at the front allow plenty of
light to fill the cosy venue. The only nod you’ll find to the building’s previous life is that the toilets are housed in the old bank vault.
As previously mentioned there’s a good selection of drinks, with rotating ales as well as wines and cocktails. Happy hour runs from 5-8pm and offers two cocktails for £12, although they must be both the same. A ‘Summer Creations’ menu provided inspiration for my wife who chose a limoncello spritz made with limoncello, lemon syrup, prosecco and soda (£9 if bought individually). It was suitably summery and made for a perfect start to the evening. I chose a cold pint of ABK Helles lager (£5.50).
Food is provided by concession Slap and Pickle who use 40-day dry-aged grass-fed Swaledale beef for their burgers which are served with burger sauce, shredded lettuce and pickles in a toasted brioche bun with signature scoop fries. There’s an equivalent vegan and vegetarian menu too.
Our burgers came in the form of a Personal Cheesus (signature double cheeseburger - £14.50), Baconator (house double bacon cheeseburger –£14.95) and a Smokin’ Bun (sweet, smoky’n’savoury: double cheeseburger
with bacon, onion rings and BBQ sauce - £15.50). All were deliciously messy and complemented by good, salty fries.
I opted for something a slightly different. ‘Winner Winner’ is a crispy chicken tender burger with American cheese, lettuce, pickles, mayo in a bun (£15). I upgraded my fries to ‘Buffalostyle’ (£4 supplement) which saw them smothered in a tangy and spicy buffalo sauce, cool ranch dressing and house pickled celery. The Buffalo sauce added an extra dimension to what was already a very tasty dish.
Everything is served on paper plates with disposable cutlery so feels very casual but the food is not to be overlooked at The Dark Horse. The burgers are as good as you’ll find anywhere.

Favourite mistake
As I set foot in the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop, I have no idea I’m about to benefit from a mistake made by a chef way back in the 1860s.
I’ve worked up an appetite for lunch by taking a late-morning stroll around the charming market town in the Peak District National Park. A mixture of tourists and locals lap up the sun as they wander around bustling streets, nipping into quaint courtyards and treating themselves to gifts in cozy little shops.
My cousin, Helen, and I are soon in for a treat at the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop.
There is an array of handmade cakes, savoury pastries and fresh bread – along with the award-winning Bakewell Puddings of course – in the famous shop, but we head up to the busy first-floor restaurant where there is a buzz in the air.
After being greeted by friendly member of staff, Ste, I’m soon quenching my thirst with a pint of Chatsworth Gold, while Helen plumps for a glass of prosecco.
Wooden beams and exposed brickwork serve as a reminder of the long history of an atmospheric establishment, built in the late
17th century when it was owned by the Duke of Rutland.
I’m sure the Duke would have approved of my tasty main course; a Derbyshire steak and ale pie along with chips and gravy.
Helen opts for a beef burger that comes with a flavoursome sauce, along with smoked cheddar and bacon in a brioche bun, salad and enormous onion rings.
The generous portions left us both almost full, but we knew there was a dessert that could not be overlooked.
It felt obligatory to order a handmade Bakewell Pudding, with the only decision we had to make being to go for cream rather than custard to go with a large dish to share.
You might wonder about the Bakewell Tart, but that mouth-watering alternative creation was not ‘The Pudding’ we had come for. An indulgent mix of buttery puff pastry case, topped with a layer of seedless strawberry jam and finished with a soft set custard of eggs, sugar and almonds was delivered with speedy service.
There are nods of approval all round, but the delicious Pudding gets the better of us and we conclude that we should share the wealth.
Clearly a question he is frequently asked, along with ‘what is the difference between a Bakewell Pudding and Bakewell Tart?’, there is another nod from Ste when asked if what remained of our dessert could be taken away.
He returns in a flash with a bag cleverly made from tinfoil for Helen to carry the leftovers home for her husband to tuck into.
It was an error from a cook at a local inn when making what should have been a strawberry tart for a nobleman in the 19th century that resulted in Bakewell Pudding being created.
Instead of stirring the egg mixture into the pastry, the cook spread it on top of a layer of jam. There were certainly no mistakes made in the kitchen during my visit.
THERE’S SOMETHING SPECIAL ABOUT THIS HISTORIC BAKEWELL DESSERT, WRITES PETE THOMPSON.

GLEN AND JEN PEGG ENJOYED A CLASSY EVENING IN BASLOW.
et in the heart of some of the most beautiful countryside in England, The Prince of Wales Village Pub and Restaurant is an absolute pleasure to visit. Nestled in the lovely village of Baslow and just a stone’s throw from the Chatsworth Estate, it is perfectly positioned for a delicious meal or drink after a long walk or destination for a relaxing afternoon or evening.
Beautiful planters of flowers welcomed us and upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by the friendly and personable Sam, who was front of house. As he showed us upstairs to our table, I was already enjoying the ambience of subtle lighting, lovely relaxing music and country art adorning the walls. The room was a perfect blend of contemporary and classic décor and tables generously spaced.
Extensive and tantalising, the wine menu boasted something for every taste and a special page of vintage wines for those extra special occasions. The Malbec I chose was served at the perfect temperature and was deep and fruity. My partner enjoyed a refreshing pint of draft Staropramen.
The menu was enticing and we were spoilt for choice. Gluten fee and vegetarian/vegan options were available for every course and our knowledgeable
waitress, Clare, was very attentive to our questions and service.
My ‘Isle of Wight Tomatoes’ (£8.95) starter was a flourish of colour with red, yellow and green tomatoes. The highquality torched goats’ cheese was delicious and creamy. Gently complemented with 25-year aged Balsamic and Basil Cress, it was an enjoyable explosion of flavour. Opposite me, my partner’s tastebuds were alive with the Singapore Soft Shell Crab (£9.50), a fusion of soft crab in a fragrant sauce of sweet chilli and the crisp crunch of deep-fried noodles.
A beautiful celebration of Slow Roasted Lamb Rump resting on a flurry of fresh seasonal greens, chargrilled carrot and soft fondant potato GF (£25) was my main meal. The lamb was tender and absolutely delicious, combined with the sauce persillade and lamb jus. My partner thoroughly enjoyed his Slow Roasted Pork Belly (£24). A feast for the eyes, the meaty belly pork was nestled under a soft Spanish white bean stew with chorizo and mojo verde.
The pleasure of dessert was still to come and I had spied the 70% Dark Chocolate Mousse (£9.50). As the lovely Elena placed it in front of me, I dove straight in. It was filled with flavour and texture and sent me straight to chocolate heaven. The salted caramel brought a
subtleness, the rye crumble a delicious crunch and there was a lovely undertone of espresso.
My partner indulged in the Basque Cheesecake (£8.50) which was deliciously creamy and the blueberry Gastrique and sorbet cut through it beautifully. The evening was completed with a speciality coffee and well-crafted cocktails downstairs.
Muddy boots and well-behaved dogs are always welcome at The Prince of Wales. They host Lunch for Less, Wednesday-Friday (two courses for £19.50, three courses for £23.50); Fish & Fizz Friday, 5.30–7pm (£18.95), Sunday Lunch 12-4pm or call in for a delicious cocktail Tuesday-Sunday (two for £15). I would recommend calling in anytime for a great experience of food, drink and excellent service.

Warm and cheery
A FUN EVENING AT THE SCOTSMAN’S PACK COUNTRY INN, HATHERSAGE. BY GLEN AND JEN PEGG.
et in the stunning countryside of The Peak District, in the quaint village of Hathersage, lies
The Scotsman’s Pack Country Inn, a popular classic English country pub with an excellent selection of hearty food. As the warm and cheery atmosphere welcomed us in, it was clear that the pub was steeped in history. I was struck by the bar adorned with pewter tankards and an array of local ales.
Whilst being shown to our table, I noticed some well-placed games in the corner and the lovely fresh flowers which graced each table. As the village of Hathersage is famous for hosting Little John’s grave, my partner was thrilled to be seated in his rather large chair!
My delicious meal began with Malaysian Chicken Satay kebabs (£8.50) with crispy noodles, mango chutney and a coriander salad, which was a fabulous blend of Asian flavours. The mango sauce brought a lovely sweetness to the generous three kebabs of marinated chicken pieces. My partner enjoyed a delicate Confit Duck Bao Bun with hoisin sauce and pickled vegetables (£9.50).
I just had to order the Beef, Bacon and Cheddar Pie, chips and mushy pea special (£17) and it was an excellent choice. No soggy bottoms here! The
crispy shortcrust pastry with juicy tender cuts of beef, bacon and cheddar was beautiful. Fluffy chunky chips adorned the rest of the plate along with mushy peas and a generous jug of delicious beef gravy.
In contrast to my hearty meal, my partner savoured every mouthful of the pan-fried hake (£19.50) which was elegantly presented in a deep contemporary bowl. The Thai broth delivered an instant hit of flavour which was delicate enough to compliment the taste of the fresh white hake. When united with the mussels, new potatoes and fresh sea vegetables, it was a complete triumph.
As this great classic pub is partnered with The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop, I knew exactly which dessert to choose. The Original Bakewell pudding (£7.50) was fresh and moreish, with an amazingly crisp outer and soft delicious centre. It was complemented with sweet ripe raspberries, creamy custard, a fruity raspberry coulis and garnished with crispy toasted almonds. Sticky Toffee Pudding (£6.50) was my partner’s excellent choice. The pudding was moist, nestled next to a scoop of rum and raisin ice cream and drizzled with delicious butterscotch sauce.
Throughout the meal, the friendly,
helpful staff, Nadine and Liam were super attentive. The Scotsman’s Pack Inn boast some stunning rooms upstairs if you would like to stay for a night or two. It has a lovely beer garden at the front with plenty of seating at the side of a river where a waterfall provides the music and a fragrant pot of lavender graces the table.
We could see that dogs are very welcome as we noticed the Canine Menu station with individually wrapped treats of Venison, Salmon and Boar and the large barrel of water outside, labelled “Dog’s Brew”.
The Inn hosts live singing events and also weekly offers. You can find further details and information on their loyalty card, which you can use in all their partner venues, online.

St Luke’s Night Strider Virtual Challenge is back for 2023!
Sheffield’s popular walking challenge is back for a whole month this October.
Night Strider – sponsored by Pricecheck and Gripple – is the annual walking challenge that this year aims to raise vital funds towards patient care at Sheffield’s only hospice.
Over the past decade, Night Strider has helped the hospice raise over an incredible half a million pounds and, with only 30 per cent of St Luke’s funding coming from the government, this money helps them to continue supporting local people who need them.
With a whole month in which to complete the miles, participants are invited to take part in an activity of their choosing, allowing them to make Night Strider their own while they raise vital funds for St Luke’s patients and their families.
Whether you get the kids out this half term for a #LittleMiteStrider, take part in an early morning #BrightStrider (steps don’t have to be completed in the evening), complete your walk while trick n’ treating for a Halloween themed #FrightStrider or reconnect with friends and family for a #ReuniteStrider, the challenge is an opportunity for you to catch up with loved ones, boost your mental wellbeing, and raise money at the same time.
Registration is now open and is free to enter – participants are encouraged to gather sponsorship to take part, with the aim to raise a minimum of £50. The St Luke’s team also ask returning participants to dig out their t-shirts from past events and wear them proudly, as St Luke’s continuously aims to reduce their environmental impact.
St Luke’s Hospice cares for people aged 18 and above throughout Sheffield with terminal illnesses, as well as their families, and provides holistic care from the point of diagnosis and beyond.

Bakewell businessman to reopen Ashford Arms
An independent pub business owned by a Bakewell businessman has acquired The Ashford Arms to add to its award winning Peak District venues.
Longbow Bars and Restaurants Ltd, owned by Rob Hattersley, 39, from Bakewell, will reopen The Ashford Arms in Ashford-in-the-Water in early 2024 following an extensive £1.6million refurbishment of the 17th century pub.
The Ashford Arms will become the third venue under the Longbow Bars & Restaurants umbrella. It joins The Maynard, an award winning wedding venue, restaurant and hotel in Grindleford and The George, an award winning historic bar, restaurant and hotel in Hathersage.
Rob Hattersley said, “As a Peak District lad, nothing brings me greater pleasure than breathing life into unviable hospitality businesses in my home county. The Ashford Arms didn’t survive the pandemic and has remained closed for the last three years. We know the locals can’t wait to see the back of the unsightly metal boarded windows and overgrown gardens.”
The refurbishment will be a collaboration with Heineken with the ground floor, hotel bedrooms and gardens undergoing a complete transformation. The Ashford Arms is expected to open in early 2024 with recruitment for new team members starting in October.
Gripple Glide Fest raises £3,000 for St Luke’s Hospice
The team at award-winning Sheffield company Gripple raised more than £3,000 for St Luke’s Hospice with a special day of fun activities for their staff, family and friends.
Glide Fest, which was held at Gripple’s Glide House in Attercliffe, included live music, a barbecue and a host of other fundraising activities, including games and raffles.
And even though wet weather meant the event had to be moved indoors, that didn’t dampen the fundraising efforts, with the day raising a final total of £3,154.43 for St Luke’s patient care. The Gripple team are long-standing and extremely enthusiastic supporters of everything we do,” said St Luke’s Trainee Fundraiser Gemma Lancaster.
“Glide Fest was a great example how this extremely important partnership works and we are delighted that even a wet British summer did nothing to dampen Gripple’s passion for fundraising.”

Win a diamond and gold pendant worth £1,000
To celebrate the fifth anniversary of PA Jewellery becoming employee-owned, we have a beautiful laboratory-grown diamond pendant to give away to a lucky reader of Westside, worth £1,000.
The 9ct yellow gold pendant is set with a 0.75ct round brilliant cut laboratorygrown diamond and is supplied with an independent grading report for the stone so you can feel confident in its quality.
One of the advantages of choosing a laboratory-grown diamond is the opportunity it affords to select a fine grade stone, showcasing the beauty and brilliance that the gem has to offer. The diamond in the winner’s pendant has been graded as D colour and VS1 clarity: completely colourless (there is no higher grade for colour than D) and with only tiny inclusions visible solely under magnification. With Excellent Cut, Polish and Symmetry too, you can be sure that
this stone will sparkle and delight for many years to come.
To be in with a chance of winning this incredible prize, you simply need to fill out the entry form and bring it into our Old Bank showroom or scan the QR code and fill in your details online. The lucky winner will be drawn at random and contacted by PA Jewellery to receive their prize. Closing date for entries: 31 October 2023.

Celebrating art
t was another sell-out at the fabulous Art in the Gardens exhibition held at Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens from 1-3 September this year.
The sun shone at last for what was the event’s 20th anniversary and the fifth anniversary of Graysons Solicitors sponsoring the event, which was attended by Sheffield’s Lord Mayor and Phil Oakey from the Human League.
Over 300 exhibitors had thousands of pieces of artwork and crafts on show at what is widely recognised as the largest outdoor art events in the North of England.
Graysons’ stand enjoyed record attendance and our giveaways, including garden kneeling mats and mugs adorned with Alan Pennington’s illustrations were
as popular as ever. A new addition to our freebies this year were tennis balls –enjoyed by the dogs who enjoyed the water we always have at the tent for them. We were delighted to say hello to clients as well as greet those who just popped along to say hello. It was also great to see those who came to view Alan’s artwork. Alan, with whom Graysons has a long-standing relationship and who has created many original works for Graysons, exhibited some of his artwork at the stand.
Graysons commissioned Alan to create a celebration birthday piece for Art in the Gardens a few weeks before the event with managing partner, Peter Clark, saying: “As it’s the event’s 20th year and our fifth year of sponsorship, we thought we’d like to do something a bit different to mark it. Alan’s designs have always adorned our promotional giveaways and we are delighted with his birthday celebration piece.”
Sheffield Young Artists, which is organised by Sheffield Abbeydale Rotary and sponsored by Graysons, held a stand
at the exhibition too. They reported a fantastic number of people interested in their work, which is created by children aged 5-18 from schools across the city. Work by Ukrainian children, also sponsored by Graysons, was on display too.
More children than ever entered Graysons’ children’s annual art competition that will be judged by Alan Pennington.
Peter Clark, managing partner at Graysons, said: “It is a privilege to celebrate our fifth anniversary of being the premier sponsor of Art in the Gardens, especially on its own 20th anniversary. It is amazing how many talented artists there are out there, and it was fantastic to be able to celebrate the talent in our region once again.”

Sending out an SOS
BBC CHILDREN IN NEED RECENTLY TEAMED UP WITH TREETOPS HOSPICE FOR A VERY SPECIAL - AND SPEEDY - PROJECT, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.
You may have seen a few familiar faces around and about in Derbyshire over the last few weeks. The likes of Nick Knowles and Zoe Ball became a temporary fixture in the area as the DIY SOS Big Build team came to our region to complete a special project at Treetops Hospice in Risley.
The hospice, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, has had a long standing relationship with BBC Children in Need for many years; the charity helped to fund their child bereavement service, including some councillors and equipment.
This latest collaboration saw the whole DIYS SOS team arrive in Risley - along with a huge team of local volunteers and tradesmen - to build a brand-new children’s counselling and therapy centre. And they did it all in ten days.
The new single storey building has been built solely with children, and their parents and carers, in mind and aims to put young visitors at ease as soon as they stop through the doors. It has three bespoke counselling rooms, a children’s complementary therapy room, child and adult toilets, and an office area. There is be a large space in which the non-talking therapy programme can take place as well as family support and bereavement training sessions for local schools and organisations.
Nick Knowles, presenter of BBC One’s DIY SOS said prior to the build: “We have another huge build ahead of us in Derbyshire, which will provide a crucial space for children and their families who are going through some of the toughest times.”
Nick was joined by his trusty team of Chris, Billy and designer Gabrielle Blackman as well as a number of BBC
Radio 2 presenters. They donned their steel toe capped boots, high viz and hard hats to help make a difference.
Treetops Hospice grew out of a campaign started by a local woman, Cally Cheetham, in 1983, following her own experiences of caring for relatives living with cancer. Over the last 40 years, the charity has grown and developed to respond to local need.
Treetops provides a range of services for local people with life-limiting conditions, those who’ve been bereaved, and their families, living across Derby, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. All care is provided free of charge and everyone is welcome, irrespective of age, race, gender, disability, belief, sexual orientation or socio-economic background.
The charity is led by a Board of Trustees and has over 140 staff based at the main hospice and out in their 19 charity shops. In addition, over 400 volunteers support all areas, from
welcoming visitors on reception and supporting patient care, to helping in the shops and supporting fundraising events.
It costs £4.3million each year to run the hospice with 30 per cent of funding coming from the NHS. This means Treetops have to raise the remaining 70 per cent themselves and rely on voluntary donations, income through our charity shops, fundraising events and challenges, lottery memberships, and gifts in wills.
BBC Children in Need have supported Treetops Hospice since 2010 and their funding has provided counselling to hundreds of bereaved children and families during that time. The funding currently supports children going through a traumatic bereavement, helping them to work through their grief, improving their mental health and wellbeing. Treetops is now recognised as a centre of excellence for children’s counselling.
The charity’s
existing counselling building, the Cheetham Centre, was built with adults in mind and, by their own admission, can be a daunting place for children. Hence the application to BBC Children in Need and the building of the new, dedicated children’s centre.
“The new children’s counselling and therapy centre will provide a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment for children and young people from the moment they walk through our doors,” said chief executive Julie Heath. Just like adults, children who have lost someone important can find themselves struggling with a powerful range of emotions which can affect their daily lives and relationships at home and school.
Every year, the charity provides over 900 counselling sessions for local children, some as young as seven years old, who are struggling after the death of a loved one.
Jules Kirk, Therapeutic Services Manager at Treetops Hospice said: “We were absolutely over the moon to have the DIY SOS and Radio 2 team come to Derbyshire to create a brand-new counselling and therapy centre within our grounds in Risley. This will make an immeasurable difference to hundreds of children and their families in our local community.”

Testimonials:
Harvey, 17, came to Treetops for bereavement counselling following the death of his brother: “The impact of counselling at Treetops is that I don’t hate life anymore. It’s quite scary to think where I would be right now if I hadn’t have had counselling. Those positive things that have happened in my life may not have happened and relationships with my family would have been rough. I wouldn’t enjoy life the way I do now.”
Treetops nurses helped care for Aimee’s mum at the end of her life: “Having someone at home that is poorly and needs 24-hour care is very, very draining and tiring. Not just physically but mentally as well, because you never get to relax. The Treetops nurses stepped in for a few hours to give us a break. To know that we didn’t have to worry about anything during that time, was just amazing. It gave us the strength to carry on.
“It was mum that was dying, not us, but the Treetops nurses looked after me and the family and helped us through everything.”
Fraser attends our Huntington’s Disease Support Group:
“I don’t always like going to new places, but if I know I’m coming here it makes me want to leave the house. I can be myself here and I know that no-one is judging me, so I can relax.”
Tracey comes to Treetops for wellbeing support:
“There’s a lot of understanding and no judgement at Treetops. You don’t have to come and explain what’s wrong with you. They understand, which is very refreshing.
“It’s about my mental health and wellbeing, making me feel better – and finding ways to do that. It’s about you. And at your pace. For me, it’s all benefit. You’re made to feel special.
“There’s something about this place. Every time I come here, it doesn’t matter how I’m feeling, I go away feeling better. It gives me a boost, like recharging me and building up my positivity. I was so reluctant to come here, and I regret not coming sooner.
Treetops supports Jill who cares for her husband with cancer and dementia:
“Treetops offers me emotional care, support, and reassurance that others can care for my husband. They recognise his mood, needs and privacy. I am able to have some 'me time' with peace of mind, stress-free, knowing he is in the hands of professional care.
“Treetops help is so valuable to me. Whether planned, or spontaneous, a visit or a phone call lifts me up."
Ross came to Treetops for bereavement counselling following the death of his wife:
“The bereavement counselling at Treetops helped me through some of my lowest points. The staff and the environment made me feel calm. When all this is happening to you, you need to be somewhere that makes you feel calm inside, instead of all the turmoil of your emotions. You know you’ve got people around you that care. It’s like getting a hug, without getting a hug. I’m indebted to Treetops for their support.”

AND MAKE LONDON’S NEWEST BOUTIQUE HOTEL YOUR BASE FOR A STAY IN THE CAPITAL.
unique converted Wesleyan chapel in vibrant Camden Town is helping transform the tourism potential of one of London’s up-and-coming boroughs in its first six months since opening.
After a £9million investment and two-year build, The Wesley Camden Town opened to widespread acclaim at the start of the year, and after six months of trading, we can already see the buzz it has brought to uber-trendy Camden Town.
The Wesley Camden Town is the first UK sister property to The Wesley Euston, the popular hotel near Euston Station which was recognised as “the UK’s first ethical hotel” some ten years ago. The Wesley Camden Town property has the same high level of eco-credentials as its big sister at Euston and is already a popular amenity within the local Camden community for visiting friends, relatives and business travellers. Whilst it is ideally situated away from the noise and commotion which many more central, more expensive hotels have, you can still be in Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus or Covent Garden in less than 20 minutes.
And within a few minutes’ walk from The Wesley Camden Town are a wide range of popular attractions and venues to visit including the world-famous Camden Lock Market, Regent’s Canal, Koko and Roundhouse music venues, Regent’s Park, London Zoo and that perennial favourite amongst UK and international travellers to London, Madame Tussauds. The hotel is also expected to be especially popular
with rail travellers from the north and Midlands, and also with travellers using Eurostar out of nearby St Pancras.
The Wesley Camden Town itself is located just off Camden High Street, and less than 400 metres from Mornington Crescent tube (just one stop north of Euston). On the nearby High Street, hotel guests will find a wide selection of restaurants with British and international cuisine, or you may want to head over to sister hotel The Wesley Euston and its vibrant Wesley Bar & Kitchen for dinner and a drink.
The Wesley Camden Town has 38 bedrooms over four floors of the sympathetically designed converted chapel which dates back to 1824, including “Classic”, “Superior” and “Wesley Collection” rooms. Prices vary per night and are from less than £150 for a double en-suite room with Queen size bed, luxury toiletries, smart TV, climate control and free WiFi. There’s a ten per cent discount for direct bookings made on the hotel’s website – www.thewesley.co.uk – and forward bookings for events like London’s Christmas lights, the capital’s New Year’s Eve celebrations and even the recently-announced Taylor Swift concerts next year, are already very strong.

Shaped by desire
Mercedes-Benz is continuing its long tradition of sporty, elegant dream cars with a new CLE Coupé.
At 4,850 millimetres long, 1,860 millimetres wide and 1,428 millimetres high, the new two-door is the largest coupé in the mid-size segment. With its dimensional concept – in particular the 25-millimetre longer wheelbase – the CLE Coupé offers significantly more space than the C-Class Coupé. The rear passengers in particular benefit from 10 millimetres more headroom, 19 millimetres more shoulder and elbow room and 72 millimetres more knee room. The boot volume offers 60 litres more volume and can easily hold three golf bags.
All engines are mild hybrids with an integrated starter generator and 48-volt electrical system. There is a choice of four-cylinder units and – as the most powerful engine – a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine.
Looking sharp
Škoda has comprehensively updated its compact Škoda Scala and Škoda Kamiq city SUV model series. Both models offer a high level of active and passive safety, courtesy of rigid bodies and a now even more advanced range of assistance systems.
Being based on the same platform, both the Scala and the Kamiq feature efficient, modern TSI engines from the evo2 generation, with power outputs ranging from 70 kW (95hp) to 110 kW (150hp).
With its refined, sharply drawn lines, the Scala looks even more dynamic, while the Kamiq’s design adjustments lend it more rugged SUV appeal. Both models now come with Škoda’s TOP LED Matrix headlights as an option – a first for these models. An increased proportion of recycled and natural materials for the exterior and interior ensures greater sustainability.
THE NEW MERCEDES-BENZ COUPE IS A LOOKER, WRITES
Latest generation
The new Renault Clio E-Tech full hybrid debuts with assertive style and cuttingedge technology, perfectly illustrating the company’s desire to build modern, distinctive and sustainable cars.
Notably, its completely redesigned front end boasts taut lines for an overtly sporty look and features the brand’s new signature lighting that is inspired by the Nouvel’R logo and incorporates slender full-LED headlamps.
Classic hallmarks
It’s a quarter of a century since Volkswagen first added the iconic letters ‘GTI’ to a Polo – and now a new limited-edition version is going on sale to celebrate the milestone.
Just 2,500 Polo GTI Edition 25 models will be available worldwide – including 350 heading to the UK.
All the classic GTI hallmarks are included – red brake calipers and trim strips, a honeycomb design on the radiator grille and chromeplated tailpipes – but the Polo GTI Edition 25 also comes with exclusive anniversary equipment such as 18-inch black gloss Adelaide alloy wheels, a black roof and black exterior mirrors, all of which enhance the car’s sporty appearance.
New Clio E-Tech full hybrid is just as impressive under its sleek new exterior, too. The petrol/electric hybrid produces 145hp for effortless, strong performance and offers a range of up to 550 miles, while also emitting as little as 96g/km CO2 and returning as much as 67.3mpg combined (WLTP). The latest Clio can use the electric motor up to 80 per cent of the time in cities – cutting fuel consumption by up to 40 per cent compared to a conventional petrol engine – with the benefits of near silent running and no need to plug-in to charge the battery.
