USING ASSET PROTECTION TRUSTS TO REDUCE THE BURDEN OF CARE HOME FEES We all know that giving some of our capital away during our lifetime will maximise the benefit received by those we love and reduce the amount that is ultimately taken by the state. However, many of us are prevented from making any lifetime gifts because we would no longer have any control over the gifted property and are worried about the consequences, for example: • What happens if you need to recover the gifted property at a later date? • You make a gift to your son or daughter, they subsequently divorce and their ex-spouse takes half your gift with them as part of the divorce settlement • You make a gift of cash to a grandchild which is intended to help with fees for their education, but they spend the money elsewhere leaving them unable to afford to continue with their studies

Setting up an Asset Protection Trust can help reduce that contribution; for example: Esme’s father, Ronald, had been forced to sell his home to pay for care home fees when he went into care. However, Esme’s own home was owned by an Asset Protection Trust, so when Esme died suddenly from a heart attack and her husband had to go into residential care, her share of the marital home remained in trust and was available for the benefit of her children. Immediate access to assets/funds on death If your assets are in trust when you die the people you intend to benefit will have immediate access to trust assets (e.g. bank accounts), instead of perhaps waiting a year or more for someone to obtain probate and administer the estate. No probate costs The costs for obtaining probate and having the estate properly administered can run to thousands of pounds. Considered use of a lifetime trust can eliminate the need to obtain probate so it is possible to avoid those costs.

Making an outright gift of capital to your loved ones during your lifetime therefore poses a dilemma, until we consider the use of Trusts, which demonstrate that effective planning need not involve ‘giving it all away’, or putting your own financial security at risk. Trusts have the following advantages over outright gifts: Asset protection A trust can allow you to give an asset away, whilst continuing to control it (as a ‘trustee’) and benefit from its use/income (as a ‘beneficiary’) whilst making it inaccessible to anyone except the beneficiaries you have chosen. You can thereby preserve your own long term security, and maximise your legacy. Care home fees As we become older, we are often less able to look after ourselves. It has been estimated that as many as 75% of us will need some form of long term care in the future. If we have assets in excess of certain thresholds, we will be expected to make a contribution, possibly for the entire cost of our care, in which case the costs can easily exceed £100,000.

Your assets are more likely to go where intended If you leave your estate to be sorted out on your death, certain dependants can make a claim on your estate regardless of the fact that they were not included in your Will. If your assets are placed in trust during your lifetime they cannot, except in very limited circumstances. CHATSWORTH COUNTRY FAIR

elebrity chefs, dangerous displays and animal attractions will once again take centre stage at the hugely popular annual Chatsworth Country Fair. Taking place from 2 to 4 September, they’ll be an actionpacked schedule of entertainment for all the family to enjoy. The opportunity to see The Great British Bake Off judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood create their favourite dishes in a series of live cookery demonstrations is just one of the fantastic treats in store. TV presenter and baker Paul Hollywood will be appearing for the first time at the fair. Paul is widely known for being a judge on the BAFTA award-winning The Great British Bake Off alongside Mary Berry and specialises in artisan baking. He will be cooking up some treats for the Derbyshire crowd on Friday 2 September. Queen of baking and favourite of the fair, Mary Berry OBE returns for a fourth year and will be performing cookery demonstrations on Saturday 3 September using recipes from her upcoming book. Food writer and broadcaster Valentine Warner will also be making an appearance at the fair, rounding off the three day event by cooking up some delicious dishes on Sunday 4 September. Valentine’s deep love of cooking, nature and travel has seen him make nine television series and write four cookery books, and he is sure to be a hit with food fans. Demonstrations will take place in the AGA Rangemaster Cookery Theatre located in a dedicated marquee with TV screens, PA and seating at the heart of the Fine Food Village. With the hottest chefs from across the region packing out a full timetable each day, the Cookery Theatre is sure to be a highlight for visitors. For those who are inspired by the demonstrations at the Cookery Theatre, there’s an opportunity to sit down for afternoon tea in Daisy’s Vintage Tea Room or buy some delicious ingredients to take home. The Fine Food Village showcases more than 70 local and small artisan producers providing the chance to buy fresh seasonal food and gourmet delights. Around the showground, there are plenty more wonderful shopping opportunities, with some great boutique clothing stands, traders

If you are looking for a show that really gets your adrenaline pumping, The Imps Motorcycle Display Team will be returning for the first time in a decade with a spectacular show of revving engines, billowing fire jumps and multiple motorcycle routines to bring visitors an unmissable display of discipline and skill. Split second timing, breath-taking fire jumps and pyramids on wheels are just some of the stunning tricks crowds can expect from the world famous youth motorcycle team, whose youngest member is just five years old. thrilling landings from the Jump4Heroes human flight team, made up of serving and former members of the military. Continuing with the aerial attractions, visitors will once again be treated to an aweinspiring aerobatic display by the Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force team famous for their trademark combinations of close formation flying, dynamic loops and rolls appearing on Friday and Sunday. The popular Household Cavalry Musical

Ride will be back performing cavalry drill movements set to music showcasing the courage, skill, precision and discipline required by the riders. As part of the display, Stablemen, or ‘Rough Riders’ lie on the ground with their horses, a skill which can take up to four months of training to teach and is a throwback to when horses went into battle and would need to take cover. Birds and animals once again feature prominently over the three days. Always popular is CJ’s Birds of Prey, a unique father and daughter act lead by Charlotte Hill who has trained in the art of falconry in various countries across the world. The duo’s bubbling enthusiasm and skill has led to them becoming one of the most popular birds of prey display teams in the UK. Other animal attractions in the Grand Ring include the Dog and Duck Show featuring untrained dogs herding ducks; Allcomers’s Dog Racing where dogs and owners race across the arena and the Hound Parade. Kicking off each day are the Mounted Games where teams of riders show their amazing skills in relay and obstacle races all performed at blistering speed. With loads more activities on offer ranging from clay pigeon shooting and archery, to vintage vehicle displays, trade and craft stands and a fun-packed fairground, there really is something for everyone to enjoy.

CHATSWORTH COUNTRY FAIR

Olympic star Jess named Country Fair President Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more exciting, Olympic gold winner Jessica Ennis-Hill has been announced as this year’s Chatsworth Country Fair President and will be opening the event on Friday 2 September. Jessica will be coming along with her family on the first day and meeting and greeting stallholders and visitors. She said: “I have always loved visiting Chatsworth – it is such a beautiful venue with the most amazing grounds. It is not far from home and when I get a day off I often visit for a walk and relax. Now I have a little boy I enjoy visiting the adventure play area with him and we always pop into the farm shop on the way home for a few bits of local produce. “I am really delighted to be President of the Chatsworth Country Fair, I have yet to visit the event, but this year with my husband and son Reggie I hope to take in all of the stalls and meet lots of exhibitors and visitors too.”

CHATSWORTH COUNTRY FAIR

In the beginning‌ ANDREW CUTHBERT, THE MASTERMIND BEHIND CHATSWORTH COUNTRY FAIR FOR 21 YEARS, EXPLAINS HOW IT ALL CAME ABOUT. ehind every great event is a hard working team of individuals, dedicated to creating a celebration to remember. The Chatsworth Country Fair is no exception and this summer the famed threeday spectacle returns for another year. From early morning mardles with Chatsworth regulars, to establishing the fair in 1981 at the request of the eleventh Duke of Devonshire, here, Andrew Cuthbert MBE recalls some of his fondest memories of the Chatsworth Country Fair.

B

What do you remember of the conversation with the Duke of Devonshire that led to the first Chatsworth Country Fair? Was there anything in your background that made you the logical person to ask?

who ran the Horse Driving event, and many others. I soon got to know the local Army Cadets and the 1st Tupton Scouts, who between them looked after internal traffic control, litter clearance and catalogue sales. I was fortunate in that many of the trade stands that had supported Holkham and Bayfield Fairs in Norfolk also came to Chatsworth and have been regulars ever since. I have so many happy memories and amusing stories. One for example when I had forgotten to cater for the curry eating Band, Pipes and Drums of The Gurkhas. So my secretary and a friend rushed out of the Park to Bakewell to buy assorted curry powders and meats and stewed up a delicious curry just

I approached Duke of Devonshire and met Lord Hartington on Liverpool Street Station. It was a coincidence that Chatsworth were also thinking of a country fair type event. I was asked to organise a country fair at Chatsworth in 1981 on the lines of previous events I had organised at Holkham and Bayfield in Norfolk since 1975. Were you given a detailed remit as to what was expected, or were you left to your own devices?

You ran the show until 2002... how big a responsibility was it? How soon after one Show finished did the planning start for the next one?

The Duchess invited me to lunch to meet all her heads of departments: game, fishing, farms, gardens, domain and house etc. This gave me an excellent team to work with, who would all be on my side and have remained so ever since. In fact I count every one of them as real friends. What are your memories of the first Chatsworth Country Fair? The planning? The event itself? The weather?

The programme from the very first Chatsworth Country Fair

I would arrive a fortnight before the event with my caravan to mark out the ground with white pegs. I would always allow an extra day and a half to be greeted by all my Chatsworth friends, who would call on my caravan to have a mardle and offer their help if I required it. In that first year I had met Rupert Turner who was a tenant farmer on the estate, and who was the local chairman of the British and Foreign School Society (BFSS), so was able to put me in personal touch with people like Joan Hayes of Staindrop Labradors, who would run the Gundog events, Mike Hurst of Great Longstone Garage, who would run the Vintage cars for many years, Caroline DaleLeach of Red House Stables in Darley Dale

in time. The good old smiling Gurkhas would never have complained whatever we had given them. A not such a happy occasion was the day that Princess Diana died and it rained so heavily that when it was time for the Gurkhas to give their display I offered to cancel it. However, the Pipe Major told me rain and eight inches of standing water was not going to put them off from coming into the Grand Ring and giving their best. And they did.

most people have climbed out of their hammocks; when I sleepily wander round the showground watching the early morning flights of the hot air balloons. Then I sit in my car for ten minutes watching the early birds arrive at the pay gates. Most visitors behave perfectly and assist the voluntary girls and boys from the Chatsworth staff collecting the entry fee, but just occasionally someone tries to be difficult and avoid paying. One such Saturday morning a horsebox arrived and virtually bulldozed his way through, almost knocking over one of our chaps. I was witness to this and chased after him to his destination by the Horse Driving arena. I found the chief steward there and together we told the gentleman to leave the showground at once. I followed a very disgruntled, but hopefully humbled, man in his horsebox through the pay lanes he had just come in by, to much cheering from the Chatsworth staff. I had at least made their day. My other favourite times are at the opening ceremony at noon and the church parade on Sunday afternoons, at about 3pm, with all the scouts, cadets, mums and dads surrounding the military bands playing stirring hymns.

Is there one aspect of the show that is your particular favourite or that you regard as being the heart of the occasion?

One of my favourite moments starts before

I could not have done it all without the help and cooperation of all the Chatsworth boys and girls and of course my wonderful band of voluntary Red Socks. Who not only make the show tick but also take a share of the proceeds for the Red Sock Trust, which they in turn give away to so many deserving charities. Over the years since 1975, the Red Socks must have given well in excess of a million pounds to charity. One year we organised Chatsworth Country Fair, Chatsworth Angling Fair, two other Country Fairs, a Son et Lumiere in Norfolk and my daughter’s wedding. That was all fun. Do you still have any official involvement in running the show today, or are you able to come along and just relax and enjoy it?

I retired in 2002 and vowed I would never interfere with the way in which my successors ran it; but now a decent time has elapsed and I feel my wife and I can occasionally come back and enjoy it all quietly in the background.

Warrior instinct A NEW ‘NEURO-ACTIVE’ PROGRAMME AVAILABLE AT HALLAMSHIRE PHYSIOTHERAPY AIMS TO SLOW DOWN THE PROGRESSION OF PARKINSON’S DISEASE. D Warrior is an evidence-based exercise philosophy that aims to slow your Parkinson’s disease down. Developed in Australia in 2011 by two neurological physiotherapists Melissa McConaghy and Lynn Tullock, it has already helped thousands of people around the world. It is now coming to Sheffield. PD Warrior is a ‘neuro-active’ programme that is designed specifically for the person with Parkinson’s. This means exercise that is capable of modifying the activities of the nerves and the behaviour of the brain. Medication helps with symptom relief and general exercise programmes will keep you healthy, but neither of them slow the progression of your disease. The recent evidence demonstrates that the right kind of exercise programme is the only way to modify the course of your disease. PD Warrior is designed for people who are: 5 ) .# ,'3 -. It involves commitment to attend regular weekly circuit classes of high intensity exercise plus an ongoing daily exercise programme tailored to individual needs. It is not for the faint hearted but has been showing excellent results. EATING OUT

A firm favourite RACHEL MARTIN DISCOVERS WHY ASHOKA HAS BEEN ONE OF SHEFFIELD’S PREMIER INDIAN RESTAURANTS FOR NEARLY 50 YEARS. hen Ashoka opened 49 years ago it put Indian cuisine on Sheffield’s culinary map, and a quick glance through the plate glass frontage confirms that this is far from your average Indian restaurant. Inside the look is antiquated and timehonoured - walnut veneer, white tiled walls and olde English geometric flooring - meets brown leather banquettes and industrial ducting. Throw in a gallery of striking black and white family photographs and trendy chrome lighting and the place really comes to life. Easing our taste buds into the Indian swing we began the evening with an assortment of poppadums (0.85p), accompanied by a selection of homemade chutneys: including mango, red chilli and green tomato, mint yoghurt and a finely diced onion salad (0.85p). This was accompanied by a sneaky sampler of the famed Taxi Driver Curry - a delightful dry spiced dish of chicken and minced lamb, made at the request of a taxi driver who called into the restaurant some years ago (£11.50). On this occasion we skipped the starters, as we knew that we were in for a treat with our selection of main courses, which are sectioned up into tandoor, vegetables, curry and biryani.

W

I have always been a creature of habit when it comes to Indian cuisine, and favour cream-based curries over those with a kick. I very much liked the sound of the Makhan Wallah (£10.50): a lightly spiced, richly flavoured creamy sauce with roasted cashew nuts, which paired fittingly with the smokey chicken tikka. My dining companion opted for a more adventurous dish and ordered the King Prawn Karamalised Kashmiri - labelled Ashoka’s most popular dish year-on-year. “How is your Kashmiri?” I asked. A minute of silence until my companion finally looked up, after demolishing half of it. “One of the best I have ever eaten” she replied, with a smile. I laughed, mainly because I was thinking the same about mine. Neither main course skimped on the main ingredient - chicken and prawns respectively which is often my gripe with curry. The Makhan Wallah gave off a lovely fragrance, with floral notes, and the Kashmiri king prawns were faultlessly cooked over charcoal and delicately spiced with cardamom and cloves. At Ashoka it really is all about the earthiness of the meat itself, which is of a different calibre. We ate all this with a selection of

impeccable breads; I would recommend the charcoal baked garlic butter naan (£3), which is superbly light and airy. I washed it down with an accompanying glass of Prosecco Borgo Gritti (£5.50). On the surface, the pocket-sized restaurant might not look like much, but inside it is a place of pilgrimage for curry connoisseurs. Year-on-year, Ashoka continues to be one of Sheffield’s most popular Indian restaurants – and rightly so – and on the evidence of the service and food on our visit, it has many more good years ahead. Re:Discover While the proposed new retail quarter remains a hot topic of discussion, The Moor has been quietly going about its business and at its heart is Sheffield’s only independent department store, Atkinsons. David Cartwright, store manager, looks at the changing face of one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares and why shoppers should continue to ‘shop local’. The future’s bright.

Individual, independent and proud of it Atkinsons is Sheffield’s only surviving independent department store and has been an important part of The Moor landscape for generations. We’re proud of the things that sets Atkinsons apart, and that starts with a committed approach to Quality, Service and Value. These values are lacking in many other businesses but we believe this why we have such a strong and loyal customer base today and are delighted that generations of families of Sheffield have enjoyed shopping with us.

Exciting times ahead Everyone at Atkinsons is relishing the opportunity to trade within a revitalised Moor, after years of underinvestment. Our passion though has always remained undiminished and we are grateful for the loyalty of our fabulous staff, many that have worked her for over 20 years and customers all of who have supported us throughout. So, If you haven’t been to visit us for a while please come into store and you’ll see we’ve been busy updating and rearranging so that you get even more choice and value.

Re: Discover Atkinsons with Reductions everywhere you look! Things have taken a very positive turn with major retailers such as Primark, Blacks, Ann Summers arriving soon and the future is indeed brighter and we look forward to welcoming both old and new customers alike. Our in-house team of Buyers have sourced new and exciting ranges to cater for evolving trends across the store. So whether you’re looking for new furniture or carpets, a new outfit, something for the kids, electricals around the home, or a gift for someone special, Atkinsons is the place to be! And remember, if you need a break from bargain hunting we have eateries to delight you - Angelicas, Caffe Massarella, and Atkinsons Restaurant.

Be the first to know.. You can be rest assured that we’re always at the ready and that one thing that doesn’t change is our commitment to offering you the very best products with the very best offers. PROMOTION

Expert help when you need it most HOWELLS SOLICITORS CAN HELP YOU PICK UP THE PIECES OF A BROKEN MARRIAGE. e can’t mend a broken marriage. But we can help you pick up the pieces. For every quick and relatively painless ‘no fault’ divorce, there are many that can be distressing and drawn out. It’s often the practicalities that make the process more stressful; sorting out possessions and housing, agreeing the finances and most important of all, making proper provision for children. Professional legal advice cannot take away the hurt but it can guide you through and help you rebuild for the future. Sorting out finances and how to divide marital assets is an important issue which needs resolving as part of divorce proceedings. Without a financial clean break there is no legally binding agreement, so one of you may seek to involve the court in your financial affairs at some stage in the future – even after the divorce has been pronounced. If you and your partner can reach an

W

agreement on finances and how to divide your assets then you can avoid the costs and stress of contentious court proceedings. We can make the agreement legally binding by drafting a consent order and lodging it at court for approval. If however, communication has broken down or you can’t reach an agreement, then we are here to guide you through the process. The first step is often to try mediation. If unsuccessful, we can correspond with your ex-partner or their solicitor and see whether an agreement can be reached in correspondence. If a resolution isn’t possible then court proceedings can be issued and a “financial order sought which is legally binding upon both of you. Either way, our team of specialist matrimonial lawyers have great skills in connecting with people, understanding the emotions in play and offering expert legal

advice and representation. We also have an independent counsellor on site to assist you should you want further help. Covering the full spectrum of divorce and separation cases, Howells expert team has been consistently highly ranked by professional guide Legal 500 and maintain an excellent strong reputation in South Yorkshire. Offering a free 30 minute appointment and a range of fixed fee options, Howells also ensures you will receive great value and peace of mind. Students celebrate their exam success at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate near York. Students and staff at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate near York are once again celebrating results that should see them near the top of national academic league tables. The independent school at Thorpe Underwood, which had its two sixth form schools - the College and the Faculty ranked first and second in the North of England in last year’s Daily

congratulate them all,” said QE Principal, Steven Jandrell. Students in QE’s College, which follows a more traditional, academic curriculum, returned 85% of A level grades at A* or A and 98% of grades at A*to B. An impressive 78 of the 128 students achieved 3 or more A* or A grades at A level. Last year’s rankings saw the College named the top school in the North of

Four for Oxbridge. Left to right - Megan McEveley from Frodsham achieved A* in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics and is going to study Engineering at Cambridge. William Urukalo, from Knaresborough is set to study Law at Oxford after achieving As and A*s . Connor Duffy, from Goole is going to study Law at Cambridge. Daisy Brown, from Wadebridge will study Law at Oxford based on an impressive set of result

Telegraph independent school league table, welcomed a 100% pass rate for both schools. “The quality of this year’s results is wonderful and rewards our students’ hard work and conscientiousness with excellent university places and opportunities for the future. The strong partnership between staff and students is key to our success and I

equivalent of A* and A grades at A level in UCAS points. Last year the Faculty was ranked as the second placed school in the North of England. “I believe our success is down to our individual approach to our students and the wide range and quality of our curriculum which allows students to find courses that capture their imaginations. Their courses offer a variety of ways forward for them and cater for their specific interests,” added Steven Jandrell. “This, along with the breadth of our extra-curricular programme which develops the wider skills necessary for success, gives us a winning combination,” added Steven Jandrell. Six students have secured Oxbridge places this year and a large percentage will be

attending prestigious Russell Group and former 1994 Group Universities. The most popular destinations include: King's College London, University of Warwick, University College London, Imperial College London, University of Exeter, Durham University, University of Manchester, Queen Mary University of London and the University of Leeds. Particular mention should be made of Megan McEveley from Frodsham who achieved full marks on 18 of her modular examinations and Lucy Ferguson from Sherburn in Elmet who gained a full 400 out of 400 marks in French A level and an A* in her Extended Project. Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £30m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.qesportsvillage.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

A LEVEL RESULTS 2015 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 97% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child’s GCSE grades are predicted 10 Grade A star GCSE’s worth up to 100% of the fees 9 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 80% of the fees 8 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 60% of the fees 7 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 40% of the fees

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year.

WEDDINGS

Nice day for a mad wedding…

UNIQUE WEDDING VENUES: 10 UNFORGETTABLE PLACES TO SAY ‘I DO’ BY RACHEL MARTIN AND OLIVIA DALEY ith thousands of wedding venues to choose from finding ‘the one’ is sometimes easier said than done. Once you’ve seen one hotel function room, you’ve seen them all, right? Everyone wants an unforgettable wedding day, but for travel and adventure junkies that can mean something slightly different from most. If you’re looking for a setting that’s a little less run of the mill; from the depths of the ocean to an underground cave, here are our top picks for a wedding location that’s a little bit out of the ordinary. And don’t expect to see a Las Vegas wedding chapel or a deserted beach on the list.

Marriage in the sky Couples can host their nuptials on a private jet with just family and friends, or book a huge platform suspended by hot air balloons, over one of the 45 countries in which Marriage in the Sky has a license. Marriage in the Sky offers couples a chance to literally take a leap into life together. Parachutes or bungee cords recommended. www.dinnerinthesky.com/marriage-in-the-sky

In a shark tank Perhaps one of the most unusual locations that has served as a venue for weddings is the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead. While many couples simply opt for the oceanic view, diving enthusiasts can embarked on their own unique version of an underwater wedding: surrounded by sharks. You can literally dive right in for a wedding with real bite. www.atlantisbanquetsandevents.com/wedding

In an igloo While a wedding in the sun is increasingly popular, you can’t beat knowing that the church where you exchanged your vows will have melted away by the springtime. A number of packages are available for an arctic wedding in Lapland and Finland, with some even offering a ride to the chapel in a reindeer sleigh. These snow-covered landscapes give new meaning to the phrase ‘white wedding’. www.travelbee.co.uk

At a festival A celebration of the bizarre and the decadent in an alien landscape, cutting edge music fills the air, teepees surround you and portable toilets are the norm. And if this all-round assault on the senses sounds like the sort of environment in which you’d like to pledge your everlasting love then you’re in luck, because festival wedding ceremonies are not uncommon. You can even get a friend to apply for a licence online to marry you. www.weddingfestivalcompany.co.uk

Underwater With a number of diving companies offering wedding packages around the world, you will not be stuck for choice in choosing an aquatic location. Stuart Cove’s ‘Dive Bahamas’ is oncein-a lifetime underwater experience in one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world.

wedding ceremony, wedding guests are also given the chance to have a guided tour of the farm and encounter its various wild animals. www.lebonheurcrocfarm.co.za

On a rollercoaster OK - not your traditional wedding chapel, but if you are an adrenaline junkie, riding down the Cyclone, Coney Island’s infamous rollercoaster, might be the perfect place to say “I do. Year on year the amusement park finds enthusiasts eager to exchange their wedding vows on this scream-inducing ride, either on the platform before they take the plunge or in the midst of the action. www.lunaparknyc.com/attractions/cyclone

In a treehouse For those who longed as children to build a treehouse and yet to no avail, perhaps a treehouse wedding is the next best thing. Stowed beneath an enchanting woodland canopy in Lochgoil, Scotland, The Lodge is the perfect destination for a fairy-tale ceremony with enchanting rural views and rustic feel. A spectacular venue for your wedding ceremony, as well as a stunning backdrop for your wedding photographs. www.thelodge-scotland.com/weddings

On a crocodile farm For a picturesque view of the far-reaching South African landscape, and an opportunity to come face to face with crocodiles, Le Bonheur crocodile farm provides a very unique wedding experience. Besides hosting the

In a football stadium If you really can’t forget your sporting passion on the big day, look no further than the FC Barcelona stadium. In a true mix of a love for your partner, and the beautiful game, the stadium offers football-related photo opportunities and even a performance by the FCB Cheerleaders while exchanging vows in front of the benches. www.fcbarcelona.com/camp-nou/business/ card/civil-weddings Underground Couples can now consider getting married 140m below ground at the National Coal Mining Museum, the UK’s first underground wedding venue. Visitors can start the day with reception drinks outside at Hope Pit and look out onto a spectacular backdrop of countryside landscape and historical mining buildings. Couples are then offered the chance to express their love in a tranquil and ethereal setting, surrounded by candlelight, as well as an opportunity to meet the pit ponies Eric and Ernie, and Finn, the Clydesdale horse. www.ncm.org.uk

EATING OUT

Star quality A MEAL AT THE SHOWROOM IS NEARLY AS GOOD AS GOING ON HOLIDAY, WRITES PHOEBE SEYMOUR. oing to the cinema is an escapist activity, and at the Showroom, this is something which extends to the food in their café bar. It was raining the evening my partner and I visited, but as we sat eating Mediterraneaninspired dishes from the Showroom’s spring/summer menu, we were instantly transported to sunnier climes. Head chef Jon Tite won a special recognition award at last year’s Eat Sheffield Awards for Showroom’s gourmet vegetarian nights and has twice been a finalist in the Vegetarian Society’s Cordon Vert Chef of the Future competition and it’s easy to see why. Jon has concocted a brilliantly varied menu to suit every craving and dietary need including vegetarian options delicious enough to tempt even the biggest meat-eaters. However, I started with the lemon and parmesan coated sardines, new potato salad and leaf (£6) accompanied by a zingy salsa romesco and a glass of white Grenache house wine (175ml, £3.80) to set the holiday mood. My partner started with the fresh baked bread, salsa romesco, houmous and olives

(£4.50), washed down with a pint of Jaipur (£3.80) and though this is a simple dish, it was presented beautifully and I couldn’t keep my hands off the stack of chunky soft bread. Though the meat dishes sound gorgeous, the ingredients and flavours in the vegetarian mains won me over. After much deliberation, I chose the butternut squash, tomato and goat’s cheese pie, spring greens, herb mash and vegetable gravy (£9) and was far from disappointed. Filled with chunks of sweet butternut squash and surrounded by a light and crisp pastry, it was even more delicious than I’d imagined. My partner, on the other hand, had a meat craving that needed satisfying so decided on the venison burger in a fresh baked bun with flat cap mushroom, Henderson’s relish rarebit, red cabbage slaw, chips and baby leaf, (£8.50). With a rich, meaty flavour, this towering burger worked a treat. The Showroom takes pride in making as many homemade ingredients as possible – not a rare thing at restaurants nowadays, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this included their selection of ice creams.

For dessert, I selected a classic combination of chocolate and vanilla (£2 each or three scoops for £4.50), both creamy and full of flavour. Maintaining the summer food theme, my partner had the passionfruit posset with coconut sorbet and an almond and coconut tuile (£4.50) and enjoyed every last spoonful. The sensation I felt as I left the Showroom was similar to returning home after a holiday. It almost feels like you dreamt it, and yet the memory of the sounds, sights and tastes remain fresh in your mind many days later. EATING OUT

A gem that sparkles RACHEL MARTIN DISCOVERS HIDDEN TREASURE DOWN A RESIDENTIAL CUL-DE-SAC. ucked away in the shadow of Ringinglow Road, The Hidden Gem Café is secret by name and by nature, as except for a discreet sign enshrouded at the side of the main road, there’s no indication of the cafés existence. In fact, if it wasn’t for our sat-nav and collective knowledge of Sheffield’s suburban backstreets we’d have struggled to find it. Although the name suggests a more exotic location than nestled at the end of a residential cul-de-sac, The Hidden Gem Café offers a welcomed retreat set back from the hustle and bustle of the city. Outside the café comprises a quiet courtyard entrance with views of climbing roses, grass lawns and flowered arches, and inside it is a fine example of a venue that started as a charitable enterprise and is now much more. It may be hidden but the secret is obvious out. The café was fairly bustling when we arrived, but before ordering our food we spent some time chatting with the volunteer waitresses from Work Ltd - a local charity that provides an encouraging environment for people with learning disabilities to develop life skills - and even managed to sneak

T

in a five minute catch-up with head chef Scott Philliskirk. Scott, 24, was formerly the sous chef at the Cross Scythes in Totley, and he told us that running The Hidden Gem Café was a perfect step up towards his goal of opening his own establishment. “But don’t worry, I don’t plan on moving on just yet,” he assured us as we studied his new overhauled brunch menu. The café continued to fill as we took our seats, and ordered a double-shot mocha (£2.50) and pot of pomegranate white tea (£2) while we pondered the food menu. After much deliberation, I settled on the tomato and egg bake (£5.95) – a delightfully light combination of baked egg, caramelised onion and asparagus, sautéed in garlic and rosemary - and my partner ordered The Hidden Gem Full English (£7.50), which he’d been eyeing up since we walked through the door. Though I didn’t get to experience much for myself, aside from a succulent slice of black pudding, the speed at which it disappeared left me confident that it was thoroughly relished or maybe it was the fact that he could not stop

raving about it afterwards. As a community café, you might imagine a venue stuffed with leaflets, bunting and donation boxes, but the most common denominator at The Hidden Gem Café is the hearty food and good old-fashioned charm, that makes volunteers and visitors feel equally at home. Now in its 21st year and having recently undergone a major refurbishment, which saw the café close its doors for three months, The Hidden Gem is attracting more people than ever before, and is certainly worth setting your sat-nav for. Viva Cuba! MOUTHWATERING FOOD AND DELICIOUS COCKTAILS MAKE FOR A MEMORABLE EVENING –AND DON’T FORGET THE PARTY AFTERWARDS, WRITES MOLLY McGREEVY.

t’s called a Painkiller.” A tin mug adorned with pineapple, a sprig of mint and full of a blend of rums from around the world is presented before me on Cubana’s bar, and for my companion, a pint of Portugese Sagres, served in a frozen glass. I’m grateful my cocktail choice was made for me, with more than 164 rums in Cubana’s new collection, choosing without the help of John Wickham, rum expert and proud designer of the latest menu, could have taken me all night. Drinks in hand, we were seated just as the live music started, the classic guitar added to the incredibly authentic Cuban atmosphere in the restaurant. As this was our first visit to Cubana, we were talked through the extensive range of hot and cold tapas and side dishes, a mouthwatering menu that we proceeded to mull over for a good 20 minutes, unable to choose just a few dishes each because they all sounded so delicious. We eventually decided on four dishes each, which according to Cubana’s hunger guide is enough if you’re more than reasonably hungry but not quite famished. Our table came alive with colour and

I

fragrance when our dishes arrived, and once again we were faced with a choice, which dish were we going to tuck into first? My companion went straight for the gambas pill pill (£5.75), the oven-baked tiger prawns were incredible and set the bar high for the rest of the meal, which did not disappoint. Stand out dishes were the risotto (£4.95) and the champiñones con queso de cabra (£5.85), which both featured goat’s cheese. The risotto was incredibly creamy and the cheese added a real depth of flavour, whilst the champiñones, a dish of mushrooms and spinach in a white wine sauce topped with goat’s cheese, was so delicious my companion considered ordering a second portion. No dish at Cubana is overlooked when it comes to flavour, even a simple portion of patatas dulces y pimientos (£4.95), or sweet potato for those aren’t fluent in Spanish, was delicate and cooked to perfection. With my painkiller finished, another beautiful cocktail was brought to the table, this time garnished with pretty little flowers. Once again I put my trust in the expert, requesting something fruity and refreshing, and within minutes an apricot mai tai appeared.

The cocktail was swiftly followed by dessert, a raspberry white chocolate brulee cheesecake and a tarte au citron, both priced at £4.50. In the spirit of tapas (and me being indecisive and wanting a taste of two puddings) we shared the desserts, which were simple but the perfect palate cleanser after such a flavoursome meal. As we left, the downstairs of Cubana was hosting a swing dance night with couples hitting the dancefloor and enjoying the party atmosphere, there’s live music and dancing almost every night, so if it’s a party you want after your tapas, then Cubana is definitely the place to go. The sound of music SOME OF THE WORLD’S FINEST MUSICIANS ARE HEADING FOR SHEFFIELD CITY HALL. n Friday 30 September Sheffield International Concert Season returns to Sheffield City Hall, which sees a line-up of the world’s finest conductors, soloists and ensembles visiting the city for 13 incredible concerts. Some of the nation’s greatest conductors will take to the illustrious Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall stage as the season celebrates the British baton holder, including Sheffield’s own Ryan Wigglesworth, Howard Shelley, Edward Gardner, Stephanie Gonley, Barry Wordsworth and Sir Mark Elder. Sheffield International Concert Season can trace its roots all the way back to 1935. Manchester’s world-famous Hallé orchestra and Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, Sheffield City Hall’s Orchestra and Choir in Residence since those early years, still play a starring role in many of the season’s highlights. They share the bill twice this season, first in November under

O

the baton of James Burton then in May, led by Sheffield native Ryan Wigglesworth. Sir Mark Elder leads the Hallé in the season’s opening concert, joined by Benjamin Grosvenor, one of the best young pianists in the world, for a virtuoso performance of Liszt’s famous Second Concerto. They return in April for the second ever performance of Symphony, a new composition by Huw Watkins. In December Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus reunite with the celebrated Black Dyke Band for their annual City Hall Christmas Concerts. Now in their sixth year, these atmospheric yuletide affairs have become a

staple fixture in Sheffield’s seasonal calendar, bringing families together for a rousing and heart-warming Christmas sing-along. The Tchaikovsky Symphony and Moscow Philharmonic Orchestras are set to bring additional variety to an already diverse programme, performing powerful Russian works including Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Rachmaninov, joined by exceptional British soloists Jennifer Pike and Freddy Kempf. More British conducting talent is on display throughout the season, with the distinguished Howard Shelley, Barry Wordsworth, multitalented Stephanie Gonley and Edward Gardner leading the London Mozart Players, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.

Tim Treeby

Peacock does you proud THE SETTING’S RELAXED, THE STANDARDS ARE SKY-HIGH, SAYS CHRIS WILSON. ou can tell at a glance that much thought, time and love has been lavished on the latest makeover at one of the most popular country pubs in Derbyshire, the Peacock at Cutthorpe. From the immaculate beer garden with its pretty floral displays to the bathrooms with their gorgeous Moroccan tiles and high-tech hand driers, everything is just so. Since my last visit a few years back, a redesign of the considerable indoor space has created a more relaxed bar area and a private dining room that allows groups of up to 12 to have a little privacy and still feel part of the pub. Meanwhile, the menu - a mix of pub classics and finer dining dishes - is nicely balanced. General manager Tim Treeby is a familiar face, having spent many years overseeing hugely popular food venues in Sheffield, such as the Cricket Inn in Totley and Thyme Café in Broomhill, and he runs a tight ship. Service is cheerful and very efficient. Presentation is pristine, even with the simplest dishes. Fish and chips was most definitely the most popular main course coming out of the kitchen when we visited, and the mushy peas and tartare sauce showed up a treat on shiny black plates.

Y

Our starters looked pretty special, too. Pearl barley risotto (£6) was a vivid green courtesy of asparagus and watercress, with shavings of Pecorino cheese melting splendidly over the top. It was perfectly cooked and deeply comforting. Pan seared scallops (£9) were sweet, slightly caramelised and sparkling fresh. Served with florets of cauliflower, cooked tempura-style in crunchy batter, on a cauliflower and truffle sauce, they helped provide the most immaculate start to a meal as we could remember for many months. Mains continued the sky-high standards. Sautéed duck breast (£18) was a glorious shade of pink with a not-too-sweet cherry sauce on the side. Those cherries dotted around the plate were soaked in booze to provide little bombs of mouth-numbing pleasure and the accompanying duck leg croquette and wedge of potato rosti satisfied the carb craving with considerable panache. That was quite a cheffy main course, and pretty special it was too. By contrast, fillet steak (£23.95) was presented with no frills. Just as well, this glorious hunk of seared, medium-rare meat could speak for itself. Hung for 28 days and served with peppercorn sauce, good chips and the usual trimmings, it provided my carnivorous companion with

much comfort. After such substantial main courses, we were looking to end our meal on a lighter note. Chocolate parfait with cinder toffee, figs and hazelnuts (£6) and ricotta semi-fredo with berry compote and rhubarb (£6) rounded the evening off in the relaxed, special style that had been evident from the moment we arrived. There is a good choice of hand-pulled beers and a very decent wine list including a fantastic Argentinian Malbec, Dante Robino (£5.50 glass). Note to self: next time, get someone else to drive and go for the bottle. The Peacock School Hill, Cutthorpe, Chesterfield, S42 7AS Tel: 01246 563 669 www.thepeacockcutthorpe.co.uk

EATING OUT

Jonnie good fun! FANTASTIC FOOD, GREAT ATMOSPHERE. WEST 10 IS OUTSTANDING, SAYS STEPHANIE BURNS. ou know it’s been a good night out when you struggle to remember getting home. But, as anyone who has ever spent Friday night at West 10 will know, it’s all to be expected from this buzzing Ranmoor wine bar. And while copious amounts of ‘Jonnie red’ - the wine adorned with proprietor Jonnie Higginbottom’s own label that changes every few months depending on his tastes - and more than enough ‘Jonnie Martinis’ - if you don’t know, don’t ask - were blurring our vision on that hazy Saturday morning, it was testament to the strength of West 10’s awardwinning menu that our memory of the food remained sharply in focus. We’d begun the evening by sharing a glass of the house red with Jonnie before ordering a fiorente spritz (elderflower liqueur and prosecco, £7) for me and an Aperol spritz (£7) for my partner. It was a strong start and things only got better. Half a dozen plump oysters (£9 from the specials board) didn’t last long in my partner’s company; sparkling fresh, they were a most indulgent introduction to the menu. Over on my side of the table, the strong flavours of my blue cheese and olive parfait (£6) leapt off the slate and were cut through expertly with

Y

a poached grape and pear salad, beetroot shards and cheddar sables. Beautiful. West 10’s seafood prowess is well documented, and many colleagues before me have been delighted by the extensive fish menu. But we fancied something different, and instead embarked on a meaty adventure. My partner’s grilled loin of venison (£20) was accompanied by a delicious pearl barley and mushroom arancini, the smoothest cauliflower puree you’ve ever encountered and a rich vanilla red wine sauce. But while he heaped praise on every aspect, it was my goose dish (£20) that really stole the show. Delicately pink goose breast, an unbelievably tasty braised leg croquette, juicy caramelized figs, a powdery gingerbread crumb and a sharp-but-sweet carrot and passionfruit ketchup made for one of the best mains I’ve had this year. The menu changes often, but if this is ever on the agenda I implore you to snap it up while you can. Jonnie joined us for desserts and insisted we sipped a glass of banana liqueur alongside our sorbet trio. I can’t say I loved the lurid green pisang ambon, but the homemade rhubarb and gin, raspberry and lemon sorbets were a wonderful way to end the meal. “I couldn’t do any of this without my

fantastic chefs and staff,” said Jonnie as we headed downstairs to continue our evening at the bar. “The most important thing for me is that everybody comes here and has a good time - and I’m just so lucky that I have such talent working for me.” He’s not wrong - both the food and the service at West 10 are outstanding. And, as I took the first tentative sips of my Jonnie Martini, I knew that no matter how foggy my head would inevitably be the next morning, the feast we’d just enjoyed would live long in the memory for all the right reasons. PROMOTION

IT’S BEEN A POPULAR WATERING HOLE FOR CENTURIES, BUT NOW, WITH A NEW CREW AT THE HELM, THIS TRADITIONAL PUB IS SET FOR A WHOLE NEW CHAPTER IN ITS LONG HISTORY.

Rick Ellison, Claire Sampson and Pascal Ravoire at The Anchor

Drop in at The Anchor ometimes of an evening, 15-year-old William Swindell props up the bar at The Anchor Inn, clinking glasses with locals, ramblers and tourists from further afield. The teenager has seen a lot of changes at the pub…he’s haunted the place for nearly 200 years. William’s parents, Francis and Elizabeth Swindell ran The Anchor Inn at Tideswell during the mid-1800s, but pints had been pulled for many centuries before the Sidewell’s took over with the first records of an ale house at the site being recorded in 1699. The Anchor sits on the site of an ancient highway that led from Castleton to Litton. When the route became a turnpike road in 1749, the pub became a popular calling place for travellers, with stage coaches travelling between Manchester and Nottingham stopping to pick up passengers three days a week. As well as being a bustling coaching inn, The Anchor was a popular jaunt for locals, with miners, butchers and farmers all flocking to the bar, market days were especially busy. The Anchor was passed down through generations of the Swindell family until the mid-1900s before being taken over by F Robinson’s Unicorn Brewery, Stockport, in 1967. Since then a number of people have run the pub, the latest being Rick Ellison, who took over as landlord in July. “I love it. The thing about The Anchor is it is a real warm, cosy pub, there is a lovely feel to it,” said Rick, who is also the landlord of The Old Hall Hotel at Hope and The Peak at Castleton.

S

Rick, who has worked in the pub trade since his days as a 16-year-old pot-washer, is joined by his incredibly experienced team – manager Claire Sampson and chef Pascal Ravoire, who after starting his career as a pastry chef in France, worked on private yachts and cruise ships before starting work in pubs a decade ago. Rick hopes to mirror the success of his other pubs at The Anchor, and aims to provide a proper pub experience, with roaring wood fires, locally sourced food and a fantastic range of real ales. The pub serves some of Robinson’s most loved ales, including Wizard, Dizzie Blonde and Pirate’s Gold. Food is served all day, every day with the current focus being on steak. As well as

serving beautifully cooked meat from local farms, patrons should keep an eye out for more unusual cuts, including kangaroo. To accompany its steak selection, The Anchor is developing a range of rum based marinades and sauces. The current collection stands at 15 rums, but Rick aims to more than double this in the near future. They may arrive by car rather than stage coach these days, but customers are still flocking to The Anchor and, with a host of plans in the pipeline, Rick’s time at the helm is sure to write a successful chapter in The Anchor’s history books. WELCOME TO SKIING FOR GROWNUPS. BY MARTIN EDWARDS. here is one big plus about the midlife crisis. Having got it out of the way, you can use advancing age as the excuse to live a little. Or preferably, a lot. I knew I’d arrived at that point when other parents at the school tried to interest me in a group camping weekend. Now if wet canvas, cooking on a Bunsen burner and waking in the early hours for torchlit treks across a landscape reminiscent of Passchendaele are your kind of thing, go ahead. I spoke for myself. They were a few words that spoke more eloquently of liberation than did the Gettysburg Address. “I don’t do tents”. Villa Rose is definitely for people who don’t do tents. Or, come to that, not your average chalet-based ski trip. It has succeeded in taking what is

The beautiful little Haut Savoie town of Samoens has a number of things going for it. For a start, it’s a mere one hour from Geneva airport, where

a private transfer awaits. And because it is not as well-known as the mass tourism resorts like Val d’Isere, there is a pleasing absence of the lads-on-tour apres-ski brigade. Lesser-known it may be, but its lift system links with nearby Flaine to provide a huge range of excellent skiing within clear sight of Mont Blanc. And the town itself is still unspoiled, right down to the 550-year old lime tree that still grows in the main square. But where Samoens really scores is the fact that it’s ideal for those who’ve never skied before. It is without doubt one of the best beginners resorts in Europe. Rather than confining new skiers and boarders to the lower slopes, which are always the first to wear thin during the thaw, Samoens has a main cable car which takes them right to the heart of the piste network.

TRAVEL

The Secteur Debutant features a series of slopes graded in difficulty so as to allow fear-free progression from rank beginner to budding intermediate, all within a few days. If you happen to be a capable skier and your friends or family are booked into ski school in the morning, the layout of the ski area means you can enjoy a few runs then meet for lunch at one of the nearby mountain-top restaurants (the Caboens being the pick). And the cable car takes newcomers and experts alike back down at the end of the day. Waiting for you will be one of Villa Rose’s drivers, who will shuttle guests and their equipment back to the chalet. It’s then time to make your way to the best restaurant in town. No need to bother venturing out in the cold to find it. This particular haven of culinary excellence is a few steps from your room door.

Alpine apple and Champagne rarebit

TRY THIS AT HOME:

Serves 4 4 slices wholegrain bakers’ bread 2 apples, skinned, cored and finely sliced 2 large banana shallots, finely chopped 50g grated Emmental 50g grated Gruyere Half tablespoon English mustard 100ml Champagne (or Prosecco if you must) 2.5 tablespoons plain flour Pinch salt and two turns black pepper Half a round Reblochon cheese to melt on top. 1. Toast the bread on one side. Combine all ingredients except Reblochon thoroughly in a bowl until you have a loose paste. 2. Butter the untoasted side of the bread and top generously with the mixture. Place slices of Reblochon over each slice. 3. Place in an oven preheated to 210c until golden on top. Place the slices in warm bowls and top with a poached egg.

This is the domain of Villa Rose’s own chef Dan Bearcroft, who goes to great lengths to ensure diners are well lookedafter. Before he wields so much as a single spatula, Dan consults guests in advance to establish their particular food requirements or preferences, from which he builds superb four-course menus. The challenge presented by my own family would have stopped Escoffier in his tracks. Four vegetarians, three of whom nevertheless eat seafood. One of the trio does not like spicy food, and two don’t care much for mushrooms. Sanguine professional that he is, Dan didn’t bat an eyelid at such a complex brief. “I’ve dealt with harder ones in the past,” came the reply. So by the time we headed, champagne in hand, up to the dining room with its open-plan kitchen, he had prepared a menu that could stand comparison with the finest of fine dining restaurants. Breakfast is founded on the same principles. After fruit, pastries, delicious

French bread and freshly-squeezed orange juice, your hot course is cooked to order. Typically, this might be a choice of eggs Benedict with a lemon hollandaise, crepes, smoked salmon and scrambled egg, or Dan’s own speciality, an apple and Champagne rarebit, the recipe for which he kindly gave us. When it comes to the arduous business of actually skiing, every angle is covered. For instance, Villa Rose staff arrange hire of equipment, which is then delivered to the boot room on the first morning. There’s an expert on hand to ensure correct fittings. All in all, it’s a far cry from ski holidays of yore, with their three hour coach transfers along dizzying mountain roads, cupboardsized accommodation and chalet girls who were all called Annabelle. So how was the skiing? Therein lies a tale. Call it the vain pursuit of lost youth if you like, but we decided to hit the piste for the first time in ten years – as snowboarders. If our ten and fourteen-year-old offspring could do it, so could we. Or could we? Find out how we got on in next month’s issue.

Getting there/ Staying there Jet2.com operate a regular service from Manchester to Geneva – and at civilised times of the day, so you’ll arrive feeling fresh and ready to take to the hills. Villa Rose are now taking bookings for the next winter season. They offer a range of half-board or b&b options. The chalet, (though actually it’s better described as a boutique hotel) can be booked for exclusive use by a party of 12, or there are a selection of double or family rooms. Villa Rose also features a fully-equipped honesty bar and wide screen TV lounge. STARS DROP IN FOR TEA AND CAKE Zoe McBurnie, owner of the The Bakewell Tart Shop, got the surprise of her life recently when the cast and crew of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land – including Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Patrick Stewart, Owen Teale and Damien Moloney – stopped by for a cup of tea and a piece of cake. The actors are currently in Sheffield performing at the Lyceum Theatre but had expressed an interest in visiting the famous Bakewell landmark.

Rum collection is another first for Sheffield

Cubana, Leopold Square, has unveiled its first dedicated rum menu, offering a staggering 164 varieties. The extensive collection has been sourced from around the globe – from Cuba and Jamaica to Cambridge and Japan. The menu is the result of months of research by Cubana assistant manager John Wickham – a man with a total passion for rum. Cubana owners Adrian Bagnoli and Brad Charlsworth went to extraordinary lengths to ensure they offered obscure, delicious and affordable rum, with the majority priced under £10. They also flew to Havana in Cuba to source one of the most expensive bottles in the world and single 25ml shots of ‘Maximo Extra Anejo’ are now on sale at Cubana for a jaw-dropping £150. I have fulfilled one of my lifetime ambitions whilst raising money for a good cause.” The cause is very close to Lisa’s heart as her friend Sarah lost her husband, Neil, four years ago to pancreatic cancer. Neil would have been 50 this year and in the last three years Sarah has tirelessly raised more than £25,000 for the pancreatic cancer cause. 126 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

CAZ KAY THE TRIATHALETE DOING HER BIT FOR THE STAMPEDE In an attempt to raise as much money for the hospital as possible, 38-year-old Caz Kay is embarking on a year-long challenge to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Having already completed the 13-mile Go Big Moor fell race, and the Thorsby 10 miles, Caz is planning to add a Virtual Stampede medal to her trophy cabinet. The Virtual Stampede challenges individuals to walk, run, cycle or swim a total distance of 60km throughout the month of September, raising much needed funds for Sheffield Children’s Hospital’s Physiotherapy Department. Caz was inspired to raise money for The Children’s Hospital Charity after her daughter had an operation to remove her adenoids. She said: “It was during this time when I had a chance to reflect on things. This whole process absolutely broke my heart. But, my daughter’s procedure was minor compared to many other unfortunate children in the hospital. I thought, I need to do something here. I need to try and make a difference to these children’s lives.” Registration for the Virtual Stampede at www.tchc.org.uk get your work out gear at the ready, the stampede is coming.

MOTORING

BMW pulls out all the stops for its latest M5

Sporting: the BMW M5 Competition Edition

From stunning BMWs and Ferraris to a veteran classic, JORDAN CUTFORTH

takes a look at some very special editions.

To celebrate the production life of the F10 generation M5, BMW has created what could be the last M5 powered by the 4.4-litre V8 engine. Named the Competition Edition, there’ll be a limited run of just 200 cars with a price tag of £100,995. That may seem quite a steep price for what’s essentially a family saloon, but you get pretty much everything thrown into the mix options-wise, including the M Competition Package which makes the car an altogether much more sporting proposition. Maximum power has been raised to 600hp from 560hp with a torque figure of 516lb ft. Other differentiators include carbon fibre exterior parts, jet black alloy wheels and kidney grill, and full black merino leather upholstery with unique ‘1/200’ engraving.

MAKEOVER MARKS ANNIVERSARY To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Jeep Wrangler, Jeep has created a – you’ve guessed it – a 75th Anniversary limited edition Wrangler. Based on the Overland Wrangler, it comes with unique exterior and interior cues to differentiate it from the rest of the range. Exterior features include a bronze-finished front grille and 18-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured dual top, Mopar slush mats, unique bronze and orange Jeep badging, and a dedicated 75th anniversary badge. Interior differentiators include ‘1941’ embossed heated leather seats, bronze accents on air vents and grab handles, satnav with an Alpine premium sound system and deep-tinted sunscreen glass. It’ll be available with an updated 2.8-litre diesel engine or a 3.6-litre V6 petrol. Prices start from £34,765.

The Jeep Wrangler 75th anniversary edition

May the fourth be with you…

Stunning: The LaFerrari Spider

I Spi–der new Ferrari! Ladies and gentlemen, may I present the world’s worst kept secret: the LaFerrari Spider. Many people would describe this as the ‘ultimate driving machine’, mainly because of its rear-wheel drive platform, looks only a supermodel could achieve and soundtrack loud enough to wake the gods courtesy of the howling 950hp 6.3-litre naturallyaspirated V12 hybrid petrol powertrain that lies beneath. As you’ll have probably guessed, the LaFerrari Spider is a convertible version of the LaFerrari Coupe. There’s a choice of choosing either a removable carbon-fibre hard top or a removable soft-top. Unfortunately, all examples of the Spider have been sold, but don’t fret; you can still buy the Coupe model on the used market for as little as £2.5million! 130 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

This fourth generation of the Clio, first introduced into the market back in 2012, is most certainly one of the best looking cars in the supermini segment. Its swooping curves and charming looks make it undeniably French. Now, Renault has decided to give the Clio a mid-life refresh with a subtle exterior face-lift with redesigned bumpers and a new full LED front light signature, as well as upgrading the Clio’s interior with better quality materials, all with the aim of making it a much more grown-up proposition. There’s a new 1.5-litre dCi diesel engine, which produces 110hp and 192lb ft of torque, mated to a six speed manual gearbox, and the TCe 120 petrol engine is also now available with a six speed manual.
