elcome to the September edition of Westside. When long-standing Sheffield business Swann-Morton started in 1932, they certainly raised a few eyebrows with their worker-led approach. But it’s a philosophy that has brought great success – they now produce 1.5 million surgical blades a day which are sold in almost every country in the world. Westside got the inside track on thriving business. Ecclesall Road is often considered the social hub of the city – we dine at seven of its restaurants and look at the businesses that make it thrive. If you’ve got home improvements in mind, take inspiration from our ‘Home Front’ feature and don’t miss our usual mix of fashion, beauty, travel, motoring and more. Don’t forget that the Westside Restaurant Bar & Restaurant Awards takes place on 8 November at the OEC. Turn to page 94 to find out how you can have your say and how you can attend the glittering event. Otherwise, we’ll see you next month in our wedding special.

Demand for property remains incredibly high!

T

he coronavirus crisis has seen family-run estate agency Staves working under unprecedented pressure. With interest in local properties vastly outstripping homes available and the necessary safety measures to take on board, the business has had to adapt quickly. But, says director Matthew Staves, staff have embraced challenges, increasing Staves’ market share in the process. The company has also expanded, taking on three new employees to assist in dealing with a huge surge in calls and property enquiries. Said Matthew: “I think Covid has really differentiated one estate agent from another. There have been those which could not cope because they didn’t have the manpower or weren’t prepared to go that extra mile, but we’ve got on with things from the minute we were told we could. It’s been more tricky delivering our services, but we’ve been busy selling houses since a year last May, following the initial shutdown. There hasn’t been anything we haven’t managed to do.” Staves opened in 2010 on Chesterfield Road in Woodseats and have since opened further branches in Dronfield, Gleadless Townend and most recently in Dore. The south-west of the city has always been

popular with buyers attracted to its fantastic amenities, great parks and open spaces and close proximity to both of the city centre and Peak District and that interest has only grown over the last 18 months. Matthew said: “I think what’s happened is that people have refocussed their priorities in terms of their home and they aren’t prepared to wait. Whether that’s getting a bigger garden or an additional bedroom for a Home Office. With borrowing costs so low, it is an excellent time to sell your home.” Some properties recently sold by Staves have attracted as many as 60 viewings within the first few days of marketing, with an increase in interest from people moving from outside the area. If you are looking to sell your property, you can call Staves for a free, without obligation, market appraisal of your home. Going forward, the agency is continuing to implement many of the Covid safety measures introduced, including single party viewings. Meanwhile, Staves continues to take pride in being part of and supporting the community it serves. This starts with using local, independent suppliers wherever possible. The company is also very active in sponsoring local schools and organisations.

Pomm Pom Just before Christmas 2020 Pomm Pom’s managing director took herself off to have a nail treatment at her local high street nail salon. Taylor&Emmet Unused, unloved upstairs rooms at Taylor&Emmet’s Banner Cross office have been transformed into a great place to work for its growing team. The Sheffieldbased solicitors now have space to employ more people, improving the service offered to clients, which in turn, is resulting in increasing numbers of five-star Google reviews. Five years ago, Taylor&Emmet’s facilities manager, Lee Stacey, began the job of clearing out second-floor storage rooms at the Ecclesall Road office. As the clutter was removed, he noticed that with a bit of TLC, they could be converted into modern, open plan accommodation. In the intervening period, a refurbishment project was undertaken. Walls have been knocked out, floors levelled and air conditioning and LED lighting installed in readiness for occupation. The space is now being used to house the branch’s conveyancing department. Lee said: “It is great to work for a firm that backs you when plans like this are put forward. The transformation has taken a few years, but Covid actually helped in the final stages, allowing work to be undertaken while there were fewer staff in the building. The space is now so good, we’ve been able to socially distance the Banner Cross team much more easily.” To find out more, call 0114 218 4000 or visit www.tayloremmet.co.uk

Satisfaction guaranteed IS THE BEST THING ABOUT BROCCO KITCHEN THE FACT YOU CAN HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING? RICHARD ABBEY CERTAINLY THINKS SO. uite often you can visit a restaurant and leave disappointed. Not because the food or service was sub-standard just that there were so many tempting dishes on the menu and you could only try one or two. A return visit is a must. But this is where a restaurant like Brocco Kitchen really comes into its own. Their smorgasbord-style menu, skilfully delivered by head chef Leslie Buddington and his team, let’s you try a little of almost everything, leaving disappointment to a minimum. The hotel and restaurant is a charming contemporary space located just off Hunters’ Bar roundabout and next to Endcliffe Park. We entered the restaurant through the garden terrace and while some social distancing still seems seems to be in place, the restaurant (and terrace) is full and has that early evening buzz that has been missing in so many hospitality venues for too long. It was great to see. Shown to our table by front of house Keeley, we ordered cocktails - a margarita (£7) for me, a gin-based Brocco Garden (£10) for my wife - before poring over the smorgasbord of tempting dishes. There are no starters, mains, desserts in the traditional sense but seasonal ‘small plates’ covering nibbles, meat (The

Q

30 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Hunter), fish (The Fisher) and veg (The Gardener) dishes as well as sides. Keeley recommended two to three dishes per person, which is even better if you’re in a larger group as you can pretty much sample the whole menu. We nibbled on some sourdough bread (£4) to start before choosing four other dishes, which are brought to the table as soon as they’re cooked, there is not set order. First to our table was some crispy squid with tarragon aioli (£9) and tempura roasted vegetables with a soy, ginger and chilli dipping sauce (£10). The batter was just perfect on both dishes, deliciously crisp with the fish tender and the vegetables still having enough bite. A good start. We followed this with lamb neck fillet, pickled cherries, kimchi and satay sauce (£16) and curry roasted monkfish, brown butter, hollandaise, pickled carrots and coriander crumb (£14). The lamb, cooked pink, was well balanced with the sharp, sweet and slightly spicy flavours of the fermented cabbage and fruit whilst the sauce gave it a delicious nutty flavour. The monkfish, again was expertly cooked, but the highlight was the lightest, almost foam-like, hollandaise that accompanied it, just spot-on. Our last dish was thyme roasted

chicken with crispy skin, asparagus and broad beans (£12), which had lovely summery flavours. Desserts came in the form of a peach creme brulee with mint shortbread (£7) and a strawberry panna cotta with vanilla salted popcorn (£8) and we couldn’t resist a further cocktail to finish - espresso martini (£7) for me, and a Brocco Garden (£10) for my wife. I felt like we’d covered a broad spectrum with our choice of dishes but there were still others I would have loved to have tried. That means a return visit could be on the cards but we’ll have to be quick as the autumn menu will be launching soon. Brocco serve breakfast and brunch, lunch and Sunday lunch as well as afternoon tea but it’s the dinner that really takes some beating. There’s no disappointment here. Serving up a treat OLIVIA WARSOP FINDS COOL VIBES AND MUCH MORE AT A SHEFFIELD INSTITUTION. shoka is well known in Sheffield, and for good reason. The Ecclesall Road restaurant is a long established favourite for good food and great atmosphere having been on the scene since 1967. The eclectic, vintage style decor and warm, friendly staff make dining there a joy before you’ve even taken a bite. We were greeted by the welcoming staff who as soon as we were seated thoughtfully brought us water and glasses of ice as it was one of the hottest days of Summer. Now that’s service! Because it was so hot we ordered ourselves two glasses of Mango Lassi (£3.50), a refreshing mix of milk, mangoes and natural yoghurt. While we browsed the menu we, of course, started with classic crispy poppadoms (90p) and pickle tray (85p) served stylishly on silver plates in keeping with the retro theme. Despite being spoilt for choice we managed to choose and for starters we had a special Ashoka recipe, Cricket Pakora (£5.50) with mixed vegetables perfectly seasoned and spiced, as if we’d expect anything less. We also had to have the classic Vegetable Samosas (£5.50), beautifully

A

crispy pastry flaked to perfection, and filled with spicy vegetables and served with a side salad. The starters were a generous size and if you’re dining in a group I’d recommend ordering one of each and sharing round the table, everything is too nice not to try as much as you can. The service was perfectly timed and soon the main dishes were placed in front of us and smelling out of this world so and we eagerly tucked in. If you love a good Biryani, Ashoka is the place to go. Choose from a selection of chicken, lamb and mixed vegetables, a tough choice but in the end we went for the Chicken Biryani (£12.50). It was beautifully marinated in the chef ’s special biryani gravy and served with slow-cooked Deharduni basmati rice. If you want to try something a bit different we would highly recommend the Karamelised Kashmiri with king prawns (£14), this is Ashoka’s most popular dish and it’s easy to see why. The sweet, caramelised slow-cooked onions perfectly balance the line between sweet and savoury and add a unique depth of flavour when paired with the king prawns, you will be left wanting more

after trying this Ashoka special. We paired the mains with a moorish Cheese Naan Bread (£3.50) on the side. Portion sizes at Ashoka are huge and before we even had to ask the waiter offered to box up the leftovers for us before topping up our drinks. The restaurant seems to run like a well-oiled machine and the staff seem totally in their element, the age of the establishment comes through in how effortlessly done everything seems to be. It’s a pleasure to dine at Ashoka, every dish is exceptional and that knowledge makes it hard to get up and leave when in fact you’re almost tempted to wait a while and then order even more. We’ll drink to that FROM SWEET AND SOUR TO CELEBRATORY SPARKLES, OLIVIA WARSOP PUTS KETTLE BLACK’S MIXOLOGISTS TO THE TEST. ummer and a night out, what could be better? Especially if it involves sitting in a gorgeous terrace, on a balmy night, with each viewpoint framed by hundreds of flowers flowing from the ceiling with Instagram worthy perfection. Kettle Black on Ecclesall Road has an atmosphere like no other. Whether you’re grabbing a cocktail with your closest friend or embarking on a night out to remember, they cater for everyone. However it’s not just an exceptional setting, the staff also play a huge part in making the Kettle Black experience what it is. We were greeted by the friendly and knowledgable team who were more than happy to discuss the drinks menu and give their recommendations. Kettle Black has an extensive cocktail menu, including many of their own inventions, so it’s worth taking the time to read through it and take advantage of the staff ’s expertise. The menu is divided by category and I’d recommend trying something from each one. As seemed only fitting we started with the classics, Strawberry Daiquiris (£8.50), Piña Coladas (£8.50) and White Russians (£8.50). All delicious with traditional creamy sweetness and topped with plenty of

S

fresh fruit. And following this something sour and electrifying from the (surprise surprise) Sours section; Rhubarb Vodka Sours (£8.50) and Amaretto Sours (£8.50) are fireworks in a glass, I highly recommend if you’re someone who, like me, loves sour sweets. After this we dived enthusiastically into the aptly named Signatures selection. If you’re a gin lover then I would recommend the Liddybug (£8.50), absolutely delicious, made up of raspberry Whitley Neill gin, elderflower liqueur, rose syrup and lemon juice. Valleytown (£8.50) is also a firm favourite, sweet with rhubarb and ginger Whitley Neill, framboise liqueur, raspberries and lemonade. Perfection. And of course a night out isn’t complete without the prosecco, the Botanical Garden (£8.50) mixes Absolut Vanilla with fruit and elderflower, then tops prosecco for a magically sparkly drink. For me, my favourite drink of the night was the Refresher (£9), 100 per cent nostalgic sweetness with the fizzy kick of the classic sweet. If you’re feeling daring then I would give a Largarita (£10) a try, a classic margarita served in a chilled pint pot and topped with a whole bottle of Corona. Sounds like it shouldn’t work but it

does! Don’t be alarmed if this is still too much of a cocktail for you though, Kettle Black also offers a wide variety of lagers, ciders and wine (starting from £4). Additionally why not take advantage of the range of shooters available (3 for £10 mix and match), the creamy Muller Corner goes perfectly with sweet drinks and if you’d rather something sour then try the Kool Aid. Kettle Black offers a truly unique night out experience in an amazing location, with incredible atmosphere and fantastic drinks. Everything from the decor to the drinks add’s to the party vibe that totally sucks you in and I guarantee you’ll leave having had a great time and with a new favourite cocktail (or ten). Maurizio Mori

Same but different CHANGES HAVE BEEN AFOOT AT NONNAS, BUT IS IT ALL THE BETTER FOR IT? WRITES MARTIN EDWARDS. here is a certain stage in a restaurateur’s life when a strange thing happens. It’s when the lines between the place itself and the owner become blurred. The two assume a single identity, a process which takes place almost without anyone noticing. For instance, there were countless times in the eighties and nineties when a beery night out with the guys would reach a critical stage. You could guarantee, as sure as eggs is eggs, that a voice would eventually pipe up. “Shall we go to Kamal’s after this round?” And taxis would be rounded up to take the happy band to the Ashoka. It was likewise with Baldwins, never the Omega. And more recently, it’s happened to Nonnas, as we found out on a recent visit to this most revered of Sheffield’s Italian restaurants. There was keen anticipation of the evening ahead. The talk was all about the new menu at Maurizio’s. It just kind of slipped in. Of course, there have been changes in the quarter century since Nonnas first burst onto the local scene, with its unique blend of style and good, authentic Italian food. Most recently, the re-spacing of tables to comply with the Covid regulations brought a new feel to the restaurant, which Maurizio was not slow to notice. He says that the new look has actually

T

36 www.sheffieldvibe.com

improved the customer experience by bringing in a different atmosphere to the place, which has long been the unofficial hub of the Ecclesall Road social circuit. Among other new additions is an enoteca and wine sales area. “It works very well with the combination of table service, bar and restaurant areas and the terrazzo outside. It’s really continental, and people like it,” says Maurizio. The authentic feel of Nonna’s is heightened by the staff, all of whom seem to have come straight from the old country. And very charming they are too. They will even continue smiling indulgently should one of your group take it upon himself/herself to order in their pidgin Italian. The menu is a mixture of the wellknown classics such as Melanzane Parmigiana as well as some that are less familiar over here. Take Caponata. This rich, sweet combination of aubergines and red peppers is very much in vogue at the moment. It can be used with pasta as a sauce, but Nonnas take on it is to serve it on toasted Italian bread, which makes the most heavenly Bruschetta. And don’t forget the burrata. Across the table a bowl of what is a classic dish of Tuscany was met with unbridled enthusiasm. Somehow, the matter-of-fact description in the menu of it as Tuscan bean soup doesn’t do it justice. Packed with flavours.

As might be expected from a man whose ancestral home is Tuscany, many dishes show strong regional influence. But a trip to Nonnas would not be complete without some pasta and our pick of the bunch was a Linguine Marinara, bursting with fresh mussels, calamari and clams. The traditionalist among us chose Mushroom Risotto, which was light, fluffy and altogether correct. Maurizio, by the way, uses only fresh pasta made on the premises, something quite unusual in the industry. But the best bit was the outside covered terrace, where we retreated with our coffee and desserts, shielded from the chill in the night air by overhead heaters. This meant we were able to polish off Tiramisu and Rum Babas, wearing shorts sleeves and with pink faces. Bellissima, as I believe they say in Italy. Sizzling prawns

The new bar area

Warm welcome CHIARA BRUNO FEELS RIGHT AT HOME AT THIS ECCLESALL ROAD FAVOURITE. ight in the heart of Ecclesall Road sits Prithi Raj – an Indian restaurant with a remarkable reputation for its premier Indian cuisine and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. After a long period of time restricted to takeaway service only, Sobuj (chef and proprietor), has opened his doors to indoor dining once again. This time the restaurant boasts a brand-new and improved bar on its second floor, host to a generous array of wines and spirits, proving the perfect accompaniment to the homemade curry dishes. From the new bar upstairs to the soonto-be newly renovated downstairs seating area, it is clear that Sobuj and his team work tirelessly on the restaurant, ensuring only the best for their diners. But, food isn’t the only thing on their minds - they are also hugely dedicated to their local community, having raised thousands for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, including a charity night hosted by BBC’s Dan Walker, (a big fan, who often enjoys a cheeky Saturday night curry from Prithi Raj), raising over £114,000 in one night alone. From the moment we walked in, this care and thought for their customers and community was evident. It was clear to my husband and I that this family run restaurant takes immense pride in their customer service, making us feel immediately at ease. Eventually, after a long deliberation during our appetisers, we finally chose

R

38 www.sheffieldvibe.com

our meals. To start, we both opted for the sizzler option – my husband choosing the lamb, whilst I chose the prawns. There is certainly a reason why they are called ‘sizzlers’; the crackle could be heard all the way from the kitchen to the table, arriving steaming hot and delicious. The Podina Lamb Sizzler (£4.90) was the perfect combination of the tenderest lamb, stir fried with thinly sliced potatoes, bullet chillies (not too many), roasted onions and peppers. The Chingri Sizzler (£5.90), also comprised of potatoes, chillies, roasted onions and peppers, but was stir fried with the most amazing prawns I have ever eaten. These enormous king prawns were butterflied and fried with spices, providing a truly sensational flavour experience. For the main course, I chose the nation’s favourite curry; Chicken Tikka Massalla (£8.50). The waiter stated it was his own favourite dish, testifying that Prithi Raj’s version is the best for miles around, which is why I just couldn’t resist trying it. And indeed, he was right. Large pieces of succulent chicken greeted me in a delectably creamy sauce, with subtle hints of coconut and almond, proving wonderful. My husband opted for the chef ’s special, a lamb Kashmiri Bhuna (£8.90). Described as a fairy dry curry made with caramelised onions, we were both intrigued, having never had caramelised

onions in a curry before. It is fair to say, we were beyond impressed. The slow cooked onions added a sweetness to the lamb, which melted in our mouths upon first bite. Mixed with pine nuts, it made the ideal sauce for our Peshwari Nan (£3.20), cutting through the sweet coconut and almond bread just perfectly. Then there was the side dish of a Tarka Dhall (£4.50 as a side or £7.20 as a main), which consisted of lentils in a flavoursome sauce. On top of all these dishes, we also had a side of Pilau rice (£2.60), topped with the beautiful red threads of saffron, adding just that extra touch of opulence. PROMOTION

Save a little room OLIVIA WARSOP GETS A LESSON IN PORTION SIZE AT THIS ITALIAN FAVOURITE. hen someone says the word ‘pasta’ to me, I instantly picture either a classic carbonara or a lasagne with a million layers. However, when someone says the word ‘pasta’ to me now, I’ll be picturing Maranello’s. Walking into Maranello’s on Ecclesall Road feels like walking into a family kitchen where recipes have been honed over generations, but with gorgeous, exposed brick walls and terrazzo floors. The family-run restaurant has an inviting and friendly atmosphere that is impossible to resist and the staff are passionate about what they serve. The menu boasts a wide variety of traditional favourites including pizza and pasta, as well as a selection of meat, fish and risotto dishes. There are also many vegetarian options. For starters we had Polpete (£7.95), beautifully cooked homemade beef mince meatballs in a spicy tomato sauce with the perfect heat to sweet ratio. In addition to this we had the Funghi Gorgonzola (£7.50), a vegetarian dish with lots of delicious mushrooms fried in a rich gorgonzola, cream, garlic and bechamel sauce. For someone who loves cheese (and really I mean who doesn’t

W

40 www.sheffieldvibe.com

love cheese) this dish was pure heaven. By far, however, the main course dishes on offer were the stars of the show, and if you find yourselves in Maranello’s we wouldn’t judge you if you had more than one. Choosing was a tough choice but in the end we decided on the gorgeous Tortellini (£11.95), chunky pasta pockets filled with mouthwatering Parma ham and mozzarella cooked in a creamy garlic and parsley sauce, served with parmesan on top of course. And also the Ravioli Ricotta (£13.95), giant ravioli parcels which perfectly balanced the richness of the ricotta with the smoothness of the tomato, basil and cream sauce. Of course after this we couldn’t resist ordering a refreshing glass of rosé (£4.50) to sip on as we leisurely chatted away enjoying the relaxing ambiance and the summer’s evening. The portion sizes are so generous at Maranello’s that I was convinced we would have zero available space for dessert but a quick glance at the menu quickly changed my mind.We were instantly transported to the Amalfi coast as we savoured every refreshing, zesty spoonful of the Tartufo Limoncello (£5.95), lemon ice cream with a lemon sauce centre and

coated in a layer of sweet crushed meringue. In addition to this we treated ourselves to the favourite of favourites, a classic and refreshing Tiramisu (£5.95). Perfect coffee and cream lightness with sharp chocolate was an amazing high note on which to end the meal. As well as their printed menu there is also a selection of seasonal specials that are regularly updated. If you go with a group it would be well worth ordering a selection of dishes to share so that the big portions are put to best use and everyone gets to sample the entire menu – win-win! I’d highly recommend a visit to Maranello’s, and when you do visit you’ll probably find, as we did, that a return visit will be imminent! EATING OUT

Full of surprises EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED AT THE WILDCARD BAR & GRILL, WRITES MARTIN EDWARDS. ack Carter was in confident mood when I last met him. Rewind back to several months ago, when Wildcard was about to open its doors for the first time after a period in which lockdown restrictions had disrupted the plans for its scheduled launch day. Yet the main man at the all-new Ecclesall Road Sports Bar was undaunted. “This is something the like of which Sheffield has never seen before. This will amaze everyone,” he said. To see if he was right, we returned to the by-now thriving venue, which sits neatly on the site of what was Napoleon’s Casino. To ensure the challenge would not be an easy one, we arrived as a party containing my two teenage daughters, neither of them interested in sport and one a vegetarian, plus my other half, who’s a mean cook herself and no stranger to dining out. They were all apprehensive about visiting a sports bar and grill, expecting it to be wall-to-wall football fans bellowing out club anthems. Not a bit of it. Most of the customers were families enjoying a midweek break, interspersed with the odd trio of more mature gents who had clearly worked up an appetite on the golf course that afternoon. But as we arrived at the door, our minds weren’t focused on the clientele.

J

Jaws dropped all round as we beheld the astonishing vista of the interior, with its tables on two levels and, towering over the expanse, a huge Jumbotron. For those unfamiliar with the species, a Jumbotron is a huge hulking cube full of audio-visual wizardry which enables it to display the likes of live football matches on super-sized screens. This then represents the sports element of the Wildcard package. We however, were giving our full attention to the sizeable menus. What strikes many first-time visitors about the menu is that it offers an extensive choice but also features some dishes that might be expected at loftier restaurants. Take the Ahi tuna sashimi, and my companion did. This is correctly cooked pink-in-the-middle using sushigrade tuna and served with Japanesestyle accompaniments like wasabi and an oriental dressing. Likewise we were pleasantly surprised to see Bajan blackened cod, a dish rarely seen on most menus, originating from Japan and made famous by Nobu on London’s swish Park Lane. The teenagers meanwhile were engrossed in the nachos, served with melted cheese, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, jalapenos and spring onions. Delicious and unsurprisingly one of the dishes most frequently ordered. The parents meanwhile tucked into salt and pepper squid and pot stickers.

Yes, there are certain elements of the menu that might be expected to feature. But again, there are burgers and pizza, then there are burgers and pizza. In fact, I wished I’d gone for the burger when one arrived at a nearby table. Next time. The people behind Wildcard have obviously thought long and hard about the food. And they’ve nailed it. It resists the temptation to be a pseudo-American dining place, and this is reflected in the décor. Taking pride of place in the downstairs displays for instance are football shirts once worn in anger by local heroes. Of course, if you’re going there to watch the big game, Wildcard offers prebookable booths with individual screens if you prefer something on a smaller scale than the Jumbotron. But – and this is Wildcard’s greatest achievement – you’d probably go there in any case just for the food and a good time. Now, what time’s kick-off? Bamfords The British people have over the last year and a half spent more time in their own homes and surrounding countryside than at any other time in our recent history. What is for many a newly found love of the home and the English landscape has been reflected in the boom in the traditional art market. Bamfords last four major sales have each broken records for auction totals and number of lots sold. Thomas Sidney Cooper, RA (1803-1902) has long been recognised for his depictions of cattle and sheep resting and grazing amongst the meadows of England. A great example of his work dated 1864, previously at the Cavendish Hotel, Baslow, found a new home in the countryside of Oxfordshire. Sidney Cooper’s works often have two, three of four sheep or cows. This massive example left us counting sheep with an incredible 98 resulting in a sale price of £27,000. The portrait that generated the most interest encouraging bidders from Europe, Asia and the Americas and had been in the family home at Casterne Hall for several generations was in the circle of Francis Hayman and depicted Peg Waffington as the character of Rosalind from ‘As You Like It’. Undoubtedly the Shakespeare association helped it to achieve just over £5,000. If you would like to contact James Lewis or any of the team at Bamfords for valuation or auction advice do not hesitate to contact us on 01629 730920.

Style inspiration YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO IT ALL YOURSELF – FROM LUXURY WALLPAPERS TO BESPOKE PAINTS, A NEW INTERIOR DESIGN STORE HAS ALL YOUR HOME NEEDS COVERED. ecent research undertaken by interior design specialists Graham & Brown showed that 86 per cent of people surveyed had undertaken a DIY project during lockdown. Of those, 50 per cent had redecorated and 94 per cent believed that doing DIY had been good for their mental health and wellbeing. So, it seems that the lockdowns of the last 12 months did have their benefits, with many of us making our homes the best they can be. And it looks like we’re not done yet; the survey also showed that 74 per cent of people surveyed plan to do more. Did you catch the DIY bug? If you’re one of the many whose plans haven’t quite reached their potential (yet) and you’re looking for further inspiration, or some luxury products or accessories you won’t find anywhere else, you‘ll want to visit the new Exclusive Decor by Home Designs HQ showroom on Savile Street. You can choose from a range of luxury wallpapers

harmony with the selection of paints of offer, Exclusive Decor has a Graham & Brown tester pot stand meaning you can get your colour selection just right before buying in bulk. “After running a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom showroom for the last 15 years, we felt there was a gap in the market in Sheffield for high quality wallpapers and paints,” said manager Andrew Henchley. “We stock a huge range of luxury wallpapers, including the latest ones from Julien Macdonald, Barbara Hulanicki and Sacha Walckhoff. The latter have worked extensively with Graham & Brown to produce some striking papers that range from flock and floral to geometric and glitter.” In the expansive showroom, which occupies the old Harratts Volvo building on Savile Street, you’ll also find wallpapers from Versace and Gucci, Laura Ashley

wallpapers and paints and Dulux paints. Wallpaper is something in particular that has become increasingly popular over the last 12 months. Indeed, the Graham & Brown survey showed a 22 per cent increase in searches for ‘wallpaper’ as well as a 124 per cent increase in searches for ‘how to wallpaper’. New styles in store at Exclusive Decor include metallic papers with microbeads, 3D wallpapers, heavyweight boutiques and a selection of flocks. They can also supply made-to-measure murals as well

as standard-size ones too. Whatever the size of your project, if you’re looking for luxury, Exclusive Decor by Home Designs HQ might have what you’re looking for. They offer a free design consultation service and is open seven days a week and there is extensive parking on site.

Lacking comfort in your conservatory? It’s time for an Equinox solid conservatory roof Equinox brings solid roof insulation to your conservatory The answer to this ‘Goldilocks Problem’ - too hot, too cold, but hardly ever just right - is above your head. In a new, solid conservatory roof replacement that includes proper insulation, just like the roof on your house, to control the temperature in your conservatory so it’s ‘just right’ the whole year around. The Eurocell Equinox solid conservatory roof.

Insulating you from higher energy bills The key to all the extra comfort and convenience an Equinox roof brings to your conservatory is in its insulating roof panels. It’s what’s known in the industry as a ‘Warm Roof’ design - one that keeps heat in right up to the ceiling apex so the whole space stays cosy and warm. It’s reckoned a solid conservatory roof is up 15 times better at keeping heat in than a 16mm polycarbonate or an old glass conservatory roof. And while it might be very slim, giving you more overall space and height to enjoy, the highly efficient conservatory roof insulation we use in Equinox is among the most effective on the market. In fact, it has a uvalue of just 0.15. Or, to put it another way, it’s around 10 times more energy efficient than an A-rated double glazed window.

PROMOTION

Choose carefully PA JEWELLERY CAN HELP YOU FIND THE PERFECT WEDDING RING. ith restrictions eased and lots of catching up to do, we are seeing more couples visiting us to choose their wedding bands. It can be difficult to know where to start, but following some of our hints and tips can help make your ring shopping a wonderful part of your wedding experience.

W

Give yourself enough time… When planning your wedding it can seem like there is an endless list of things to decide and your wedding rings may feel like just another item on that list, but it is worth giving them some thought early on as they are the one thing (apart from your spouse!) that you will keep forever. With so many different materials, sizes and styles to choose from wedding rings are normally made to order and although many are available more quickly, it is advised to allow up to eight weeks for this. To prevent unnecessary stress, we’d suggest giving yourself as much 88 www.sheffieldvibe.com

time as possible; you may want to start looking and trying rings on quite early in your planning as this will help you budget and allow you to think over your choice before committing.

Try lots of rings on… The easiest way to decide if you like a design is to try it on. Looking online can provide ideas, but there is nothing quite so good as getting the ring on your finger. It often surprises people how quickly they can rule designs out once they start trying them, and those final decisions about the exact width or profile are much easier when you can directly compare them.

Consider what’s practical… Your wedding ring will probably be your most sentimental piece of jewellery and one you will wear forever. While it is important to choose a design you love, it is also important to think about how practical it is. For instance, some metal

options or designs can limit resizing or even rule it out altogether. This doesn’t bother everyone, but if you do want the ring you get married in to last forever then discussing this (admittedly unromantic) aspect now can prevent future heartache.

Ask lots of questions… As jewellers we talk to lots of couples who are in exactly your position and are well-placed to offer both practical information and style advice based on our years (sometimes decades!) of experience. You may be unsure what metal will best suit your lifestyle or whether your engagement ring would look best with a bespoke fitted band. Our job is to answer your questions and help you find your perfect ring so don’t feel afraid to ask as many as you need to so you can be confident in your choice. Theatre Tell Me On a Sunday

Operation Crucible

31 August-4 September Lyceum Theatre www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk Returning to the stage following her acclaimed performance in the National Theatre’s production of A Taste of Honey, Jodie Prenger stars as ‘Emma’, in the 2021 UK tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Don Black’s classic musical. Charting the romantic misadventures of an English girl in New York during the heady days of the 1980s, this iconic musical features a wonderful score including the chart-topping Take That Look Off Your Face and title track Tell Me On A Sunday.

2-25 September Studio Theatre www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk This story of four ordinary men in extraordinary times returns after a sellout run at the Studio in 2016. Eighty years ago, on 12 December 1940, Sheffield was subjected to a bombing raid which aimed to wipe its world renowned steel works off the map. A single bomb reduced the Marples Hotel, which stood in Fitzalan Square, from seven stories to just 15 feet of rubble. Only one of the ten compartments in the hotel’s cellar withstood the blast.

Trapped within it were four steelworkers. This is their story.

Typical Girls 24 September-16 October Crucible Theatre www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk In a mental health unit inside a prison, a group of women discover the music of punk rock band The Slits and form their own group. An outlet for their frustration, they find remedy in revolution. But in a system that suffocates, can rebellion ever be allowed? Part-gig, part-play, Typical Girls is funny, fierce and furious.

Wentworth Festival 18 September / Wentworth Woodhouse www.wentworthmusicfestival.co.uk There are still tickets remaining for this popular which will see The Feeling, Cast, Space and Bang Bang Romeo (and many more) take to the stage. There’ll also be comedy Paloma Faith from Steve Royle, Justin Moorhouse and Susan Murrary as well new music from local bands including Bad Luv, Floodhounds and Henderson. Food and drink options will be in abundance and there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained too. Just add sunshine.

Comedy Jonathan Pie 5 September / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Jonathan Pie’s critically acclaimed sell out show Fake News finally returns, updated and remixed for a post-Corona world. After months stuck in lockdown, Jonathan Pie returns to the road to discuss how corona has changed the world… and his career prospects. Jonathan Pie is the exasperated news reporter whose videos have been seen across the world. With over 1.5 million Facebook followers, his online videos regularly achieve millions of views going viral internationally.

Jenny Eclair 23 September / Sheffield City Hall www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Having hit 60 (but still a year younger than Madonna), Jenny Eclair AKA ‘The Face of Vagisan’ confronts a new decade of decrepitude. Now that it takes 20 minutes of scrolling down to find her DOB when she’s filling in forms online, should she celebrate or crawl into a hole? What will her 60’s hold for this 1960’s babe and is it a legal requirement to buy Nordic walking poles?

Paloma Faith 28 September / Sheffield City Hall / www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk Paloma wrote most of the songs for ‘Infinite Things’ before the Covid-19 pandemic swept the world. Then we went into lockdown, and she ripped them all up and started afresh. She spent her downtime creating, learning to engineer her own music and just thinking about the world. The enforced downtime was creatively fruitful and taught her that she had been on a sort of conveyor belt of music and promo. The lockdown gave her the space to take stock and decide what is meaningful.

Exhibition The Foundry Until 2 September / Sheffield Cathedral www.sheffield-cathedral.org Throughout this summer, Sheffield Cathedral is celebrating the city’s association with steel. The Foundry is a FREE exhibition which explores the history and social aspects of the steel industry in Sheffield through contemporary digital technology, sound art and sculpture. The Foundry tells the story of how Sheffield has become known the world over as the City of Steel and the people and their inventions behind this. Using archive film footage from British Pathé and sound art, the exhibition transports you back in time to when the steel-making industry in Sheffield was at its height. Through, a modern contemporary exhibition of steel artwork, The Foundry also showcases how artists, crafts people and sculptors use steel today to create thought provoking and challenging pieces of work. Sheffield Cathedral is open 9am-5pm Monday to Saturday, 8am-3pm on Sunday.

Events Movies No Time to Die 30 September Is this Daniel Craig’s last outing as James Bond? If so, it looks like he’ll be going out with a bang in this adventure which takes him from Italy to Norway via Jamaica. Set five years after the capture of Ernst Stavro Blofeld, 007 has now left active service but after being approached by his friend and CIA officer Felix Leiter, he is enlisted to help search for Valdo Obruchev, a missing scientist. EATING OUT

Tried and tasted DUNSTON HALL GARDEN CENTRE IS ALSO HOME TO A STUNNING BISTRO, WRITES SAM PEGG. estled in the most beautiful countryside sits a quaint garden centre and bistro ready to reveal all it has to offer. You can eat with a beautiful view as you look out over the surrounding greenery. I can’t think of a more perfect combination than delicious food, flowers and plants aplenty and miles of scenery. As soon as you walk into Dunston Hall Garden Centre you enter into a paradise of decor, gifts and the fresh smell of nature. Winding around each aisle with a rumbling excitement in my stomach, I approached the bistro and was immediately greeted by friendly staff waiting to provide excellent service for their customers. Promising indoor and outdoor seating there is always a table to suit your desires. With a stylish and comfortable interior and an exterior with stunning views you’re almost stuck for choice. After being shown to a wooden gazebo outside, we were instantly provided with water for the table and had our drink requests taken. There is a generous menu of a choice of drinks both alcoholic and soft to accompany your meal to come. It has to be said that the waiters and waitresses had a lovely demeanour, were attentive and made the experience welcoming and enjoyable. We were in

N

good hands and it was clear that they would cater for our needs. The bistro has a breakfast, lunchtime and evening menu with a variety of perfectly chosen meals. I would definitely recommend for you to check out the evening menu served on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays 5-8pm. Sit in the peace of the evening as the sun starts to set over the trees in the distance whilst enjoying great food. After looking at the menu we chose to have the Dunston Steak Burger with twice cooked chips and the Dunston Fish and Chips. As stated on the menu their ethos is to only use the best local suppliers to ensure their customers receive the best, freshly cooked dishes. Fruit and veg is supplied by Winster Foods,The Bakewell Bakery bring breads and treats, meat comes from Highfield House, fish from The Gentleman Fishmonger and dairy from Woodthorpe Grange. The menu also caters for those who are gluten free, vegan and vegetarian. When the food arrived it was very well presented and cooked to perfection. The Dunston Fish and Chips was buttery, light and very fresh. An accompaniment of curry sauce, tartare sauce and mushy peas were all fresh and full of flavour. The Dunston Steak

Burger was very balanced yet rich in flavour. The twice cooked chips were delicate and delicious. Each mouthful was incredibly flavoursome. For dessert there was an array of cakes to choose from. The Warm Chocolate Brownie with raspberry gel, frozen raspberries and vanilla ice cream took my fancy. It arrived with great attention to detail and looked beautiful. Similar to the rest of the meal it was full of flavour and was a great end to a lovely meal. A visit to Dunston Hall Garden Centre & Bistro is well worth a scenic drive, to not only stop by for a walk around the plants but to also enjoy a delicious meal in the bistro. Shanghai Food R E S T A U R A N T

Shanghai boasts one of China's best and most distinctive cuisines. Shanghai residents are known to have a sweet tooth, and more sugar is used in Shanghai's signature dishes than in any other part of China. Influenced by its position just south of the Yangtze River and at the mouth of the Huangpu River, the region abounds in a selection of dishes that are unique to Shanghai but also influenced from neighboring provinces cuisine: Hangzhou, known for its carp; Zhejiang, for its vinegar; and Shaoxing, for its warmed rice wine.

EATING OUT

Head chef Alex Fretwell

Magnificent seven ENJOY A TASTE OF SUMMER AT MOSBOROUGH HALL WITH A NEW CHEF’S TASTING MENU. hen it comes to choosing somewhere to eat out, diners often overlook hotels assuming they’re the reserve of guests. But, of course, you’d be wrong. Take Mosborough Hall for example. The hotel, which now operates under the Best Western Plus banner as part of the Vine Hotels group, was originally a 12th century manor house but is now a charming space with attractive grounds, a contemporary bar and the stunning Darcy’s brasserie restaurant. You’ll find plenty of examples of old and new working in harmony. Grand beamed ceilings and huge stone fireplaces juxtapose with contemporary glass and stylish décor, which features dark wood tables complemented by cream walls and subtle splashes of lilac and mauve. Artwork that lines the walls of the restaurant give a nod to Sheffield’s musical heritage with modern portraits of the likes of Joe Cocker, Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley. Since re-opening in May there have been plenty of changes at Mosborough Hall, most notably in the restaurant with the launch of a new menu, including a seven-course tasting menu. Young head chef Alex Fretwell has really gone to town with the latter, creating a delicious blend of courses that

W

98 www.sheffieldvibe.com

have been inspired by the local produce on offer, including the hotel’s own garden, his Nana and Neil Buchanan’s Art Attack. At £45 per person, it proved to be fantastic value for money and there’s an optional wine flight (£15), which includes a glass or prosecco, two glasses of wine and a glass of port. We started with an amuse-bouche of smoked chicken roulade, Caesar and parmesan, which was like having a Caesar salad in one bite - it was delicious. A slice of 12-hour yoghurt sour dough bread (made fresh each day) followed, topped with a moreish smoked beer and Henderson’s Relish butter. Alex’s Nana supplies the beetroots that form a key component of the starter. On this occasion they’re pickled with fennel and served with a maple-glazed slice of goats’ cheese, shallot puree and a sesame tuille. The sweetness of the glaze provided a contrast to the sharpness of the cheese and made for a very balanced, summery dish. When the main course arrived mallard duck, dripping potato, carrot, kale, maple jus - the first thought was that it wasn’t the cleanest plate of food. But there was a good reason - the presentation was inspired by the [old] children’s TV show Art Attack, a

favourite of Alex. Regardless of how it looked, the duck was cooked perfectly and I really like the ‘crispy seaweed’style kale. The recipe for the pre-dessert of lemon and lime meringue pie came from Alex’s Nana and was delicious and was perhaps my favourite dish of the night. We thought we’d finished with a spiced date sponge, caramel sauce, toffee popcorn and ice cream but a Yorkshire cheeseboard followed as well as coffee and macaroons. The tasting menu is a real indulgence but provided a real insight into what’s on offer at Mosborough Hall - you’ll find many of the dishes on the large a la carte menu. And the best thing? You don’t have to be a guest. Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel High Street, Mosborough Sheffield, S20 5EA Tel: 0114 248 4353 www.mosboroughhall.co.uk

EATING OUT

The staff at West 10

Focussing on food DON’T OVERLOOK THE RESTAURANT AT WEST 10, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY. n a year of ups and downs, West 10, that hugely popular wine bar and restaurant in Ranmoor, is certainly on a positive trajectory. Now under new ownership, Klaus Bach is overseeing a shift in focus back towards food giving head chef Chris Parker freedom to express himself with a range of tempting bistro-style dishes. He’s also introduced a brunch menu and Sunday lunches too. Westside readers will be familiar with Chris Parker who was our most recent recipient of our ‘Young Chef of the Year’ award at our annual Restaurant & Bar Awards. At the time, Chris was praised for his ‘near-faultless course’ of lamb cannon served with rosemary fondant potatoes. Chris had said of winning the award, which was judged after a Masterchefstyle cook-off: “It went better than I thought although I was a bit nervous at first. I kept things seasonal, I stuck to the brief and thankfully I impressed everyone. It’s given me the confidence now to move things on at West 10.” That increased confidence was clear to see on a menu that included dishes such as Beef fillet served with fondant potato, beef dripping crumb, wild mushroom and Madeira sauce and watercress, and

I

Crispy duck egg with chorizo emulsion and asparagus. We chose from both the specials and a la carte menu and were impressed with everything we ate. Just as impressive was the remodelled upstairs dining room which is now a much brighter and more inviting space with white walls, striking palm print wallpaper, dark wood tables and green velvet chairs. We started with starters of Hendricks and beetroot cured salmon served with horseradish cream, pickled cucumber and toast (£8) and pan-fried scallops with squid ink tuile, pea puree and pancetta (£8). Salmon and horseradish is so often a winning combination and this version didn’t disappoint whilst the scallops were perfectly cooked with their sweetness balanced out by the saltiness of the pancetta and squid ink tuile. My wife indulged her love for seafood further with an excellent main of panfried swordfish with herb potatoes, roast cherry tomatoes and salsa verde (£16), which was well-cooked and had a real summery flavour. My slow roast belly pork (£16), which had been rolled and sliced, had lovely crisp crackling on the outside and deliciously soft flesh underneath. Accompaniments of glazed pig’s cheeks, black pudding crumb, mash, kale and cider jus added extra interest

and flavour - the sauce was particularly good and work really well with the pork. Desserts came in the form of a rich and indulgent sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream (£6) for her and a cheeseboard (£6) with biscuits, cheddar, stilton, brie, celery, grapes, chutney and butter for me. I thought I’d gone for the lighter option with the cheese but given the size of the plate, it would have easily fed both of us! Rising star Chris is clearly hitting those high standards he set at our competition two years ago and will hopefully be cranking things up a notch in the coming months. West 10 will long maintain it’s reputation as a wine bar and the place to drop in for a drink or two but don’t overlook the restaurant, that little walk upstairs is well worth it. PROMOTION

Time to rediscover FROM BEAR TRAILS TO LIGHT SHOWS, THERE’S LOTS TO TEMPT YOU BACK INSIDE SHEFFIELD CATHEDRAL THIS AUTUMN. fter over 12 months of changing restrictions, it’s great to say that Sheffield Cathedral is open and open fully. Daily services have resumed, the gift shop and coffee shop are welcoming customers and there are a number of events and exhibitions, showing now or in the coming months, to tempt visitors back in to the splendid building once again. “It’s wonderful to see people of all generations coming back into the cathedral,” said Sheffield Cathedral’s development manager, Ben Rossi. “Going forward, into the autumn, it gives us great confidence that things will return to some resemblance of normality.” Popular over the summer has been The Foundry exhibition, which runs until 2 September. This exhibition, which has been curated by sculptor Peter Walker, celebrates the historical industry and social aspects of Sheffield’s steel heritage presented through contemporary artworks. Digital technology, art and sculpture (in steel, naturally) all feature. If you’ve been following the The Bears of Sheffield trail – there are 100 little and 60 big bears located all around the city – you may have already visited Sheffield Cathedral to catch a glimpse of this wonderful public arts exhibition which has been coordinated by The Children’s Hospital Charity. In the run up to Christmas there is a planned remembrance service and from November you will be able to see the Christmas Tree Festival (30 November-2 January) and, postponed from last year, The Beginning: Christmas Light Show (30 November-5 December). Local businesses, schools and charities have been invited to sponsor Christmas trees as part of the Christmas Tree Festival which will be displayed around the stunning interior of the building and visitors can visit free of charge. The Beginning: Christmas Light Show will see Sheffield Cathedral transformed by Luxmuralis.Visitors will be able to watch the Nativity story unfold and delight in Christmas celebrations as the

Cathedral’s facade is transformed by light and digital artwork projections. Come inside you will be immersed in a stunning sensory experience of light and sound, inspired by the Cathedral’s historic stained-glass windows. Tickets for this will be on sale in September and priced £7.50 for adults, £6 for children aged 3-15 and £3 for carers. In the midst of the reopening and myriad events taking place, Sheffield Cathedral has also appointed a new dean – Revd Canon Abigail Thompson – and

she will take up her post on 6 November. “Sheffield Cathedral is the place where I was ordained deacon in 2006 and I got married here in 2010,” she said. “I’ve made vows here, I’ve wept into the stone floor, I’ve rejoiced here and I’ve lit candles here for people I have loved and lost. “I am blessed and honoured and totally thrilled that this is the place where I will soon daily say my prayers and get to love and serve the people of this great city, this wonderful Cathedral and the whole Diocese of Sheffield.” Whether you call in for worship, for a coffee or to see the bears, there are plenty of reasons to visit Sheffield Cathedral in the coming months. The Cathedral is open to visitors from 9am5pm Monday-Saturday and 8am-3pm on Sundays, with Holy Communion by the rite of the Book of Common Prayer at 8am and the Cathedral Eucharist at 10.30am.They have decided to keep measures in place to help to keep you safe and to restrict the spread of COVID-19 during your visit, encouraging you to support the NHS Test & Trace programme (anyone aged 16 years and over), wear a face covering (over 11s only), unless exempt, use the hand sanitiser stations provided, and maintain social distancing and keep younger visitors with you during your visit. TRAVEL

Do the Strand LONDON WAS CALLING TO RICHARD ABBEY WHO FOUND THE PERFECT BASE FROM WHICH TO EXPLORE ON A RECENT VISIT TO THE CAPITAL. Image © Photos.London

tepping off the train at King’s Cross you could sense almost immediately that London has not quite returned to ‘normal’. Regardless of the time of day you expect to walk into a packed concourse before hustling your way to the tube to get to wherever you need to go, but there was none of that. It was much more sedate, relaxed even. Of course this is not necessarily a bad thing and makes it a great time to explore the capital before the long haul flights begin to disembark onto its streets once again. A late morning tube ride to Covent Garden was both short and quiet and on, exiting the station, full of surprises. Again it was distinctly less busy and seems to have undergone a bit of a transformation since my last visit. The market is still the hub (the street performers are still there) but the streets around this seem to have been elevated to another level. Many of them have

S

been pedestrianised while garlands of flowers and lights suspended across these thoroughfares have added character and charm. Bars, restaurants and cafes now spill out on to walkways and squares to create a continental style atmosphere and with the addition of new shopping and dining areas such as The Yards and the Seven Dials Market, Covent Garden feels alive once again. The base for our short stay was just a stone’s throw from Covent Garden and is a landmark itself, being part of the London skyline for over 112 years and

steeped in history and heritage. Strand Palace has recently undergone a two-year multimillion-pound refurbishment that has seen the renovation of all 785 bedrooms, public areas, and a brand-new restaurant and bar refurbished with a modern art-deco inspired interior design. We stayed in two deluxe king rooms, linked by an adjoining door, which offered plenty of space for the four of us as well as comforts including Hypnos mattresses, air conditioning, free high speed wi-fi, Nespresso® coffee machine, complimentary fully stocked minibar and

large HD TV. It was the perfect place to relax after a day exploring the capital. Breakfast was included in our stay and was served each morning in the Haxells Restaurant & Bar. There was a good choice of hot and cold food as well as fruit juices, tea and coffee - my children particularly enjoyed the American-style pancakes lavishly smothered in maple syrup. Haxells is also open for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner with a passion for provenance and a focus on impeccably sourced, top-quality ingredients. The menu is full of modern British dishes such as the Haxells burger, superfood salad, Hawaiian salmon poke bowl and to finish, chocolate cake with honeycomb ice cream. As comfortable as it is inside, it’s the location that really sells Strand Palace with many of the capital’s world-famous sights and attractions, including St. Paul’s Cathedral,Trafalgar Square, the London Eye, and the River Thames, on its doorstep. You’re also in the heart of theatreland and Soho, home to some of the London’s hottest nightlife spots, is less

than a 15-minute walk from the hotel. We’d pre-booked tickets for the lastminute.com London Eye and made the most of the glorious weather with a gentle stroll through Trafalgar Square, St James Park and Parliament Square before crossing Westminster Bridge to its location on the Southbank. Entry was well organised (and safe) as you’d expect and after a short queue we climbed to a height of 135m for unrivalled views over the city. Each pod had limited numbers we shared with one other family - so there was plenty of room to distance but still enjoy the sights without getting in each other’s way. After hitting the heights we enjoyed a long stroll down the Southbank, which has developed into a real foodie destination. There are shipping containers, vans and trucks, all with plenty of seating and all serving food and drink, as well as recognised restaurants and cafes. Gabriel’s Wharf, just next to the OXO building, even had a beach bar. We walked on to the Tate Modern before crossing the Thames to St Paul’s Cathedral and back along Fleet

Street and The Strand, via Somerset House, to the hotel. During our stay we also visited the British Museum and the National Gallery, which are both free to enter but, due to Covid restrictions, tickets must be booked in advance. The former, again a short walk from the hotel, is home to two million years of world history and culture and is worth the admission alone for the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court, the largest covered square in Europe. Our whistlestop tour of the National Gallery took in paintings from the likes of Johannes Vermeer, Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh amongst others. No trip to London is complete without a spot of shopping; Oxford Street and Regent Street cover all bases and were some of the busiest places we visited but again Covent Garden, and particularly the area around Seven Dials, came out on top with a good selection of independent stores as well as some well known high street favourites. On the evidence of this visit, it shows that the return to ‘normal’ is definitely well on it’s way; after almost 18 months of Covid restrictions, our recent family trip was one of our first opportunities to get away and I’ll be honest, it felt fantastic. Prices at the Strand Palace Hotel start from £106 per room, per night. New director at The Source Leading Sheffield training academy The Source has strengthened its senior management team. Natalie Doherty joins as director of Quality, Curriculum and Innovation. Liverpudlian Natalie, 45, brings over 20 years of education sector management expertise to The Source, a registered charity which has been helping people into work and training since 2003. She began her career as a dancer and choreographer, headed to university at the age of 20 for teaching qualifications and a career driving high-quality educational provision across numerous sectors ensued. For two years she was Head of Education at a male prison in the East of England, enabling inmates to study subjects ranging from maths to motor vehicle mechanics and construction skills She moved into quality control as assistant director of a college in her home city and before moving to The Source was quality manager for Liverpool training provider The Learning Foundry. Natalie is passionate about giving people second chances in life through education. “When I walked into The Source I felt like I’d been there forever. Its ethos of helping people to find their forte in life is exactly in line with mine,” she commented. “I have worked with people from a cross section of society, including prisoners, and firmly believe people can change their direction at any point, given the right help and support.”

Huge sigh of relief Welcoming the news that the government will bring Sheffield Forgemasters into public ownership, Unite’s assistant general secretary for manufacturing, Steve Turner said: “This is the news we’ve waited two years to hear. Unite has been engaged in a long battle with the Ministry of Defence and the UK government to protect UK steel supply to our defence and nuclear programmes so today’s news will be welcomed with a huge sigh of relief right across our steel communities. “It brings to an end years of instability for this historic 215 year-old company, but is also a sign that government is maybe finally waking up to a crisis of its own making. Critical infrastructure industries like steel function better in public hands and advanced economies like our own need to have stable, secure domestic steel production capabilities to protect our national security interests as well as to compete in global markets. “But we only got to today’s good news because our members at Sheffield Forgemasters had the confidence and faith to invest in their plant’s future. We will now work with the government and company to ensure that those workers who put their hands in their own pockets to support the company do not lose out. “We now look forward to a secure future for the plant which brings with it the guarantee for both today’s workforce and the thousands of young workers to follow the hope of a highly skilled job in a well-paid, unionised plant.” 110 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Apprentices’ achievements celebrated by The Sheffield College Apprentices’ achievements have been celebrated at the first Andrew Hartley ceremony of its kind to be held by The Sheffield College. The Apprenticeship Celebration Awards 2021 have showcased the contribution of the College’s apprentices to employers across a range of sectors including accounting, construction, education, engineering and healthcare. University of Sheffield wins Formula Student competition A team of engineering students from University of Sheffield won the Formula Student 2021 racing car competition, beating off fierce competition from over 30 teams at event held at Silverstone Race Circuit at the weekend. The competition, which is organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, returned to the Silverstone track this month after a purely online event in 2020 due to the pandemic. Team Sheffield Formula Racing joins 2017 winners Cardiff University as the only British winner of the competition, which gives students a real-world challenge to design, build and race single seater cars. It includes events designed to test their vehicle as well as formal presentations to show their engineering knowledge. “Congratulations to all the teams who were able to make it to this year’s event in difficult circumstances, especially the winners from University of Sheffield,” said Andrew Deakin, Chairman of Formula Student. “We hope everyone who participated enjoyed the experience and look forward to welcoming all teams back to Silverstone for 2022.” For UK and international teams unable to attend the track event in Silverstone or running as Concept Class teams, the Institution organised an online competition with virtual racing simulation heats and finals. India’s Institute of Technology Bombay picked up awards for both Concept Class Design and Concept Class overall, marking a great year for the team despite not being able to join at Silverstone.

Tax support plans welcome Leading Sheffield financial expert Deborah Lockwood has welcomed the government’s announcement of a softer approach to tax collection in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. HMRC has confirmed that it will take an understanding and supportive approach to dealing with companies emerging from lockdown who have tax debts or are concerned about their ability to pay their tax. Even if customers cannot pay anything straight away, HMRC is offering alternatives including a short-term deferral, which means nothing would need to be paid for a set period of time, and that there would be no further action to collect the tax debt until that time had lapsed. The department will also discuss other forms of support, including Bounce Back loans, Coronavirus Business Interruption Loans and agreeing repayment holidays or extending repayment terms. “After a year of uncertainty and even fear within many areas of the business community, it really is good to hear that HMRC is being so proactive in its support of those people who have very real worries about how they are going to face their latest tax demand,” said Deborah, a director of Sheffield business turnaround and insolvency practice Graywoods. “HMRC are actively looking to work with and support businesses as they re-open and begin the process of recovery from the pandemic and that really does have to be welcomed.” To find out more about the full range of services provided by Graywoods call 0114 285 9500.

Yorkshire-based SMEs have an urgent need for cash, but are being turned away from many ‘traditional’ lenders, leading to the risk of a major funding gap as they strive for growth post pandemic. New data from Allica Bank shows that 46 per cent of Yorkshire-based SMEs will require additional funding within the next 12 months, but that nearly seven out of ten (69 per cent) say they have previously been rejected when applying for extra cash. The deficit in funding will potentially hamper recovery and growth in the region, only to be compounded by the end of the UK’s furlough scheme. Explaining how current processes need to be challenged, Katie Roberts (pictured), from Allica Bank’s Yorkshire relationship management division, says: “There will have been unviable businesses rejected for funding, however the high percentage suggests business performance and credit ratings are not being taken in the context of the pandemic. Instead, banks need to start taking a more forward-looking approach, using other data and information to assess the creditworthiness of a business.” The survey results also demonstrated that more than a quarter (27 per cent) of businesses felt that they did not have access to adequate support from their bank during the pandemic and that only 35 per cent feel completely confident in obtaining funding from their existing lender. “Covid loans have undoubtedly been a lifeline for many businesses, but they have also dominated the resources of many banks, who have then lacked the capacity to support financing business growth and the many Yorkshire businesses that have been able to adapt and perform well during the pandemic,” she says.

IN BRIEF

Launching a year of fundraising It’s a great way to cool down on a hot summer’s day… and an even greater way to raise money for a fantastic cause! Sheffield’s Westbourne School has chosen the city’s antitrafficking charity The Snowdrop Project as its new charity of the year. And to get the fundraising started, staff at the Broomhill independent school put themselves in the firing line with a Soak the Teacher Day. “Considering how hot it has been, everybody was rather happy to take the plunge,” said Junior School Headmaster Jon Clark. “We’ve supported many charities over the years everybody from St Luke’s Hospice to Blue Cross for Pets and we look forward to everybody at Westbourne joining in with fundraising for The Snowdrop Project.”

Choc Fest There’ll be a truly international flavour at the Roundabout Yorkshire Chocolate Festival at Sheffield’s Kelham Island Museum this autumn. For chocolatier John Cowings, brings in beans from around the globe to create the distinctive chocolate tastes of his Derbyshire micro business Cacoa Elora. And he will be sharing some of his trade secrets and his favourite creations with a taster session at the 24 October festival, which is being presented by South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout. It’s a day of live music, workshops and more than 50 stalls featuring all things chocolate - everything from from brownies and doughnuts to hot chocolate and beer as well as a selection of non-edible chocolate themed gifts. Working from his home in Alfreton, John - a diversity officer with Derbyshire County Council - imports beans from as far afield as Uganda, Nicaragua,Venezuela, Indonesia, Ecuador, Papua New Guinea and North West Honduras. Gallery reopens Sheffield’s much-loved Graves Gallery is set to welcome visitors again from Friday 3 September following a six-month programme of refurbishment and redisplay. New displays making their debut include an exhibition of work by sculptor Mark Firth, the first chance to see Pandemic Diary, a new series of drawings by Phlegm, a new exhibition curated by pioneering artist Keith Piper, as well as a new display on the theme of landscape. The improvements to the gallery and the new displays have been made possible thanks to generous support from The Ampersand Foundation for a five-year programme of change. 112 www.sheffieldvibe.com

New chairman for charity Homelessness charity Emmaus Sheffield has appointed a new chairman to its board of trustees. Bill Thomas takes over from Martin Davies, who is retiring after 24 years as chairman of the Sheffield charity. “I am very honoured to be following Martin, said Sheffield-based Bill, who spent many years as a Divisional Managing Director for estate agency Connells. “As we hopefully begin to emerge from the pandemic, this is an interesting time for Emmaus. “The past 18 months have been a difficult time for all charities but Emmaus Sheffield has survived and continues to provide an excellent level of support for our companions. “That remains, as always, our absolute priority and we have to ensure that we have all the things in place to us into a successful future.” Emmaus Sheffield, based close to Sheffield’s Victoria Quays, is the drug and alcohol free project that provides a home, support and work for formerly homeless people in the city. Through its Social Enterprise programme it aims to provide meaningful work and enable the people it supports – known as companions - to eventually become self-supporting once more.

Lord Mayor welcomes Graysons’ support for premier arts event Sheffield’s celebrated Art in the Gardens returns to the city’s Botanical Gardens once again this September with the backing of Graysons Solicitors. The city-based law firm returns as the premier sponsor of the event for the third year in a row and is pleased to be able to help bring some normality back to the arts world. Graysons has a keen interest in art. It’s also the sponsor of Sheffield Young Artists and regularly works with local artist Alan Pennington. Peter Clark, managing partner at Graysons, said: “We’ve had the privilege of being involved in Art in the Gardens since 2019 and we’re looking forward to being present once again in September. It has been a very difficult year with further lockdowns and COVID-related restrictions and it’s a pleasure to be able to help stage such an important event in the city’s arts calendar.” Art in the Gardens takes place on Saturday and Sunday 4 and 5 September, with a preview evening on Friday 3 September.

Graysons moves into Hathersage GRAYSONS SOLICITORS IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT IT HAS TAKEN OVER THE HATHERSAGE OFFICE OF FAVELL, SMITH AND LAWSON. raysons is an eight-partner firm, with a long history of providing legal services in Sheffield and Chesterfield, where its current offices are located. Established in 1925, the firm’s deep-rooted ethics and traditional high standards are blended with a progressive culture that puts it completely in touch with client’s needs. Graysons offers a wide range of services and has built a reputation for providing expertly tailored legal advice. It is recommended in the Legal 500 2021 and holds the Law Society’s Lexcel accreditation. Several of its staff are accredited to Law Society panels and by other organisations. The firm has a keen interest in supporting communities local to its practice and works closely with organisations including Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind, Paces, Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team and Chesterfield’s Ashgate Hospice. In addition, the firm sponsors the annual Art in the Gardens and young artists in Sheffield. Favell, Smith and Lawson dates back 50 years in Hathersage, when Tony Favell set up the practice above a butchers with well-regarded conveyancer, Harry Walker. By 1985, the partnership, then known as Favell, Smith and Henson, comprised Tony Favell, David Lawson, Phillip Henson and the late Keith Smith. Tony Favell became an MP in 1983 and took a back seat in the practice but was still proactive in running the business until he retired about 20 years ago. He remains a well-known and respected figure in the region. Peter Clark, managing partner at Graysons, says: “This is a perfect progression for Graysons and mutually advantageous for both firms. We are two strong and well-respected firms. Favell, Smith and Lawson will continue to offer court defence work from its offices in Sheffield, whilst our aim is to build on their exceptional reputation in Hathersage and further develop the

Swann-Morton… at the cutting edge WESTSIDE LOOKS AT A LONG-STANDING SHEFFIELD COMPANY WHO SET OUT TO DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY. ack in 1932 three friends came together to start a business in Sheffield manufacturing selling razor blades. They had their own distinct ideology regarding how a company should be run that seemed downright revolutionary. Nearly 90 years on it still raises eyebrows. Walter Swann had left a secure position with another razor blade company to be his own boss. He brought with him Doris Fairweather, a supervisor with a strict work ethic who brought her team of female workers with her and they were joined by Alfred Morton, a metallurgist. They wanted to create a kind of Workers’ Utopia, with pay and conditions way better than what was considered standard fair practice at the time. One can only imagine how their contemporaries regarded them, possibly as eccentric dreamers who would lose their £150 investment money and emerge sadder and wiser regarding the

B

realities of modern business practices. However, this dream was built to last. Swann-Morton was to become one of Sheffield’s most spectacular success stories and its headquarters on Owlerton Green remains a familiar landmark in the city.

made in sheffield

But even before the first razor blade was sold the founder’s principles were set out in four statements to guide the new company into the capitalist world. They were: • Claims of individuals producing in an industry come first, before anything else, and must always remain first. They are the human beings on which everything is built. • If the industry can’t pay the rightful reward of labour (while they are producing for profit for the owners) then the management must find another policy to make it do so. • If the management can’t do the job then a new management – and a new policy – is required.

• Individuals in any industry have a perfect right to demand and see this objective is reached, because they produce the goods. These words in Walter Swann’s handwriting are still displayed in the head office and they remain the principles that guide a company which has become a world leader in the manufacture of surgical blades, scalpels and handles. It has earned a worldwide reputation for quality, precision, consistency and reliability, combining traditional blade-making skills with the latest technology. With a wide range of products – around 70 individual blade shapes and 30 different handles – Swann-Morton

has become the preferred choice of surgeons around the world as well as other healthcare professionals such as GPs, nurses, paramedics, dentists, podiatrists and vets. Swann-Morton exports to over 100 countries thanks to a network of overseas distributors and two overseas subsidiaries, Swann-Morton/Sinner in France and J.K. Surgical in Poland. The change in emphasis from razor blades to surgical blades began in the 1930s and by 1957 Swann-Morton was manufacturing over 38 million blades a year. The first workshop was behind houses in Woodland Street, Hillsborough and the move to better premises on Bradfield Road was quickly followed by www.sheffieldvibe.com 117

the first Swann-Morton scalpel. Rapid growth saw Christmas cash bonuses, paid holidays and a 40-hour week for everyone and in 1938 the first part of the present factory at Owlerton Green was purchased, with four workshops completed in time for the increased demand for surgical blades following the outbreak of the Second World War. They looked poised to cash in but prices were promptly reduced – the directors did not want to make profit out of war. It wasn’t all plain sailing. Like many businesses Swann-Morton struggled to stay afloat during the post-war recession but those founding principles and a commitment to innovation allowed the company to survive and expand again. One of the key moments in this upwards momentum came in the 1960s when, with the demand for sterilised surgical blades increasing, Swann-Morton developed a sterilisation process using Cobalt 60 gamma radiation which meant the company was now totally selfsufficient for all sterilisation requirements. Since the turn on the century extensive expansion has seen major construction work and new buildings. 118 www.sheffieldvibe.com

Cobb Works, across the road from the main site, is a purpose-built centre for research and development and engineering while Cygnet Works, some 400 yards away, provides storage space for new materials. The latest development is the opening of Woodland Works on Penistone Road in 2020 which allows Swann-Morton to bring its plastic moulding requirements in house. Swann-Morton also acquired The Jewel Blade Company, 300 metres from the main site. Now known simply as Jewel Blade, it is responsible for craft and industrial blade manufacture within the group. Today Swann-Morton employs over 300 people, uses 600 tonnes of steel a year, and makes 1.5 million surgical blades daily. They are sold in virtually every country in the world and over two-thirds of production is exported with a turnover of £20million a year. The introduction of new technology has consistently put Swann-Morton at the cutting edge of surgical blade manufacture. Quality control has always been at the heart of every process and inspections at various stages of production are just

as important now as ever. Indeed surgical blades are subject to two final inspections before packaging within a ‘clean room’ environment, after which blades are sterilised on site. Staff turnover is extraordinarily low, with unique working conditions including ten weeks holiday a year, a 35-hour week, double time for overtime, profit-related pay, private health care and a contributory pension scheme. Walter Swann died in 1980 and Doris Fairweather followed four years later. They had set up a trust when the third founder member Alfred Morton left in the 1940s to secure the future of the company, with the employees taking a 50 per cent stake in the company and the remaining 50 per cent going to a charitable trust. That’s the way it remains with staff very proud to be not only employees but an integral part of one of Sheffield’s greatest success stories of the last 100 years.

Welcome return

THIS MONTH SEES THE RETURN OF AN ICONIC BRAND, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

Classic racing brand Lotus have released their first road car in what seems like an age. The Emira builds on the legacy of the Elise, Exige and Evora and represents a quantum leap forward for the Norfolkbased company. A mid-engined premium sports car, the Emira has been developed on a new lightweight bonded aluminium chassis, technology pioneered by Lotus and which remains an intrinsic part of the company’s sports car DNA. It will be available with a choice of two petrol engines, a Lotus-honed 3.5-litre V6 and a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder ‘i4’ from the performance division of Mercedes-Benz. The first cars will hit the road next spring with prices starting at £60,000.

Design statement The success story of Vauxhall’s Astra began over 40 years ago. Now, there’s an all-new eighth generation model about to hit the roads. The new Vauxhall Astra will launch this year as a sporty five-door with a low-slung look and yet more space than its predecessor. The new Vauxhall Astra is also a design statement for the brand. Dynamic as never before, with sheer, taut surfaces, detoxed of superfluous elements and with the new brand face – the Vauxhall Vizor. With the next compact class generation,Vauxhall shows that the Astra is ready to define a new era. Vauxhall will offer the new Astra in two performance levels as a plug-in hybrid. In addition, there are versions with highly efficient petrol and diesel engines in combination with friction-optimised six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions.

Iconic engine From 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, up to 180mph top speed, RS Torque Splitter and specific RS driving modes – the new Audi RS 3 offers driving dynamics of the highest calibre and the best numbers in its segment. Equipped with a 400PS five-cylinder engine, the highperformance unit delivers rapid acceleration with a highly intoxicating sound.Visually, the RS 3 demonstrates its sporty DNA with a widened body, RS sports exhaust system, and cockpit displays like those found in race cars. “There are fewer more iconic engines in the world than Audi’s 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder,” commented Director of Audi UK Andrew Doyle. “Now more powerful than ever before, and with class-leading performance figures to back up its striking new design, the introduction of the RS 3 Sportback and Saloon reinforce Audi Sport’s commitment to setting the benchmark in every segment.” The base price for the RS 3 Sportback is set at £50,900, while the RS 3 Saloon is listed at £51,900.

Two’s company Striking looks, exceptional handling, classical rear-wheel drive and a Goodwood Festival of Speed world premiere, will leave potential customers of the new BMW 2 Series Coupé in no doubt that this is a car set to excite and inspire. The new edition of the two-door model incorporates the new BMW design language to highlight a fresh, youthful feel with meticulously engineered and perfectly balanced driving attributes. Reaffirming its sector-leading status, the BMW 2 Series Coupé boasts rear-wheel drive, a six-cylinder in-line engine option and new equipment features that combine to underscore its standout sporting characteristics. Topping the range will be the all-wheel-drive BMW M240i xDrive Coupé, while customers will also be able to choose from four-cylinder petrol and diesel versions in the standard M Sport specification. Prices start from £34,980. www.sheffieldvibe.com 123
