20 4 Winter car care
Don’t be caught out by bad weather on the roads – we’ve got some tips to keep your motor running.
How to stay snug this winter s we enter into the coldest, darkest time of the year it’s tempting to hide away for a few months. Stoke up the wood-burning fire, crank up the central heating, put on your most comfortable woollen sweater and wait for spring to signal the end of another long winter. But before we hunker down in the warm, it is best to be properly prepared for what lies ahead. Winter Care should help you be ready for anything. Have you made the various checks that need to be carried out annually to make sure your home is in good shape to withstand whatever the weather throws our way? If you’re not sure, we have a thorough check list to help maintain your peace of mind. If you have to hit the road this winter make sure your mode of transport doesn’t let you down. Our winter car care feature will make sure you get from A to B safely, whatever the weather.

This is the time of year when even the most committed sport or walking enthusiast spends most time indoors so it’s important to make sure your own home looks as appealing as possible when the sun sets. Our focus on lighting will make sure you see out the long, dark hours between dusk and dawn in a welcoming, friendly environment. Meanwhile, getting the right winter fuel inside the body is of paramount importance - this is not the time of year to try and get by on salads alone. Our classic, easy-toprepare recipes for warming winter suppers will keep out the cold and give you a warm inner glow. That’s just a taste of what’s inside RMC Media’s Winter Care. And don’t forget, December 21 is the shortest day... so from that moment forward the hours of darkness are decreasing slightly every day and springtime is just around the corner. CAR CARE
BE PREPARED
DON’T GET CAUGHT COLD THIS WINTER, MAKE SURE YOUR CAR IS ROAD-READY, WHATEVER THE WEATHER, WRITES STEPHANIE BURNS. here is no escaping the fact that we are now in the depths of winter and over the next few months we face the risk of icy roads, heavy snowfall and lashing rain wreaking havoc on our cars. If you don’t show your car some attention, it may let you down when you need it most. Follow our advice and you’ll avoid the problems most frequently faced by drivers during the winter months. According to the AA, the most common cause of breakdowns is a failing battery, particularly in winter. During colder spells a battery is more susceptible to the power output dropping and losing voltage as it is less able to accept a charge so it doesn’t recharge while you’re driving. It is also in use much more due to lights, windscreen wipers, heaters and heated seats. If you’re jetting off somewher – visiting relatives abroad or enjoying a festive break somewhere sunny – your car will probably be left on the drive or exposed in an icy airport car park. After standing still for days at a time, there is every chance your battery will not play ball when the engine is finally switched on. A battery can last through summer if it’s weak but when winter arrives, it’ll soon go flat if it’s already low. The good news is, there are plenty of steps you can take to prevent it dying and leaving you in a sticky situation. If the majority of your journeys are short, or you often leave the car standing still for days at a time, it may be wise to invest in a modern battery conditioner or intelligent charger. This will help to prolong its life, giving you better value from your existing battery.
T
You should also ensure everything electrical is turned off before you leave the car. Even something as simple as an interior light being left on can drain the battery and mean your car won’t start the next morning. However, if your battery is more than five years old, you may want to think about replacing it – certainly if it is showing signs of a struggle when you start the car as this may mean it hasn’t very long left. If you’re still not sure, drop into your local garage. They’ll check that clamps and connections to the battery are secure and have not corroded. If the battery is beyond repair, they’ll be able to fit a new one for you. Winter is also a dicey time for tyres. If you park your car by the roadside, you may scrape the wheel against the kerb every now and then. This is even more likely if fallen leaves or snow are obscuring your view of the kerb. While immediate damage may not be obvious, these small scrapes can result in a slow leak, affecting the tyre pressure gradually over a period of time until it is flat. After heavy use during the summer months your tyres may well be in need of some TLC and, when hitting icy roads, you need to make sure they’re in top condition. If you even have the slightest inkling that your tyres may need checking, putting it off for even a few days could cause big problems. Additionally, freezing conditions increase the number of potholes in the road and dark nights leave drivers often unable to spot them until it’s too late. If you’ve driven down more than a few bumpy roads, be sure to get your tyres checked over just in
case serious damage has been caused. You should also start thinking about winter tyres. Even though the weather isn’t yet cold enough to warrant fitting them, you can never be too prepared and at least they’ll be ready and waiting for you to put on as soon as the cold weather hits. Bad weather also means that we get in our cars with wet, muddy shoes, which can lead to steamed-up windows in the morning and even frost developing on the inside of the windscreen. Avoid this by taking the mats out and allowing them to dry overnight, and keeping the heaters pointed downwards as you drive along. You should also be careful not to turn the windscreen wipers on too soon as it could rip the blades to bits or even blow the wiper motor if they are stuck in place with ice. If the police catch you driving with a steamy or frosted-up windscreen you can get three points on your license. Finally, don’t be one of those people who get stuck during a particularly cold snap because their only can of de-icer is in the car and the locks are frozen. Avoid the hassle by ensuring you always have a can in the house too, and make sure you top up your screen wash to a more concentrated level so you’re fully prepared at all times.

PREPARE YOUR HOME
Keep the cold at bay
inter is here, and, with it, plunging temperatures and shorter days that make you want to curl up and relax, warm and cosy by the fire. As you prepare to pump the heat, it's important to protect your home from potential damage. Here are our top tips to help you stay warm, safe and energy-conscious this winter.
W
Bleed the radiators Are your radiators colder at the top than they are at the bottom? This is because systems can occasionally get air in them, stopping the heat from circulating properly. Bleeding the radiator releases the air, allowing it to run more efficiently.
Service your boiler A poorly maintained boiler wastes energy and costs more, and it also runs the risk of leaking carbon monoxide. Either get your boiler serviced before winter or change your old model for a condensing unit.
SIMPLE TIPS TO HELP YOU GET YOUR HOME READY FOR THE WINTER. BY RACHEL MARTIN
PREPARE YOUR HOME
Insulation About a quarter of the heat in your house is lost through the roof, so having good loft and wall cavity insulation could keep the house warm with less energy used. Typically, you can save at least £120 per year on your energy bills by having insulation installed, according to the Energy Saving Trust. If you’re worried about keeping the costs down, it might be worth looking into the grants and schemes provided by the government that subsidise insulation installation.
No entry for draughts Those chilly winter breezes are wily things, and they’ll try everything they can to slip through the nooks and crannies of your home. Check the edges of your doors and windows for draughts, and seal these gaps with self-adhesive draught strips or a draught excluder.
Keep the heating on low Turning the heating off while you're out could cause your pipes to freeze. To avoid this, keep the central heating on low when you leave the house, and open all internal doors. You can also avoid frozen pipes and tanks by keeping the hatch to your attic ajar.
Check your home insurance
Keep your pipes warm Burst pipes are common during winter due to rapid freezing and thawing, potentially causing massive damage. The best way to stop this from happening is to keep your pipes warm with their own foam cardigan (lagging) which will reduce the heat lost and insulate the pipes to stop them from freezing.
Guttering Gutters and drainpipes can fill with loose foliage in the autumn. Once the blockage becomes too much, water will start to back up in the guttering and leak into the roof and down the walls. Make sure your gutters are free from dirt to minimise blockages.
Winter is a popular time for making home insurance claims, with maintenance problems cropping up for many at this time for year. Hopefully you won’t need to make a claim, but just in case you do, check your home insurance policy is up to date. If you are ever in doubt about how to look after your home during the winter months, particularly when it comes to your heating, contact a specialist.
Prepare for winter storms Don't let a blizzard take you by surprise. Always have a fully stocked emergency kit at hand and store at least three days’ worth of supplies for everyone in your household.
Fireplace or wood stove maintenance If you rely on wood to stay warm, or just love the feel of a real fire, now is a good time to clean out last year’s ashes, and stock up on new wood for the winter. Have the chimney cleaned once a year as well.
‘About a quarter of the heat in your house is lost through the roof, so having good loft and wall cavity insulation could keep the house warm with less energy used. Typically, you can save at least £120 per year on your energy bills by having insulation installed.’ Inspect the loft Check for signs of damp, particularly in areas where the roof slope changes. Darker patches, water staining and white streaks of powdery residue could indicate that rainwater has been entering the roof space.
Check outdoor lights Make sure outside lights are working. Lowenergy lightbulbs will mean they don’t cost much to leave on when it’s dark outside

can include a warm edge bar if required and are manufactured and tested to BSI standard so you have the peace of mind that your new glass has been rigorously tested and is highly energy efficient. And as we all know by now, it’s not just our carbon footprint that increases with inefficient glazing products, but also our energy bills. “After a period of time, the seal between the two pieces of glass in a double-glazed window unit breaks down and causes a misty effect,” explains Graham. “When this happens, it means they no longer have any thermal efficiency or sound proofing and heat loss can become a big problem.” While you may think that the only solution is to fork out for a new frame as well as new glass, Graham is pleased to say that this isn’t
necessary. “What I do is fit the latest energy efficient glass into existing frames of any size. As long as there is no damage to those frames, there is no need to replace them – and this can save people a lot of money.” While frames have improved slightly over the years, they have mainly stayed the same so you can rest assured that you won’t be losing heat through old frames. Huge improvements in glazing technologies, however, are benefiting homeowners more than ever. So why wait until the glass is misty? With very competitive prices and no VAT to pay, Sheffield Glazing can offer an affordable option for new double-glazing that will instantly improve the energy efficiency of your home without breaking the bank. As well as replacing the glass in windows, Graham also carries out repairs on any type of frame and any aspect of glazing, including the glass in conservatory roofs and patio door units – and he does it all to the highest standards. HEALTH
Winter sports The cold weather brings with it a wide array of activities, so why not try a new winter sport like ice skating, skiing or even sledding. Taking up a new hobby that has an expiration date can be motivating because in a couple months, your opportunity will have melted away.
Beat the CHILL FACTOR IT MIGHT BE COLD AND DAMP OUTSIDE, BUT RACHEL MARTIN HAS SOME TIPS TO KEEP YOU FIT AND HEALTHY DURING THE DARK WINTER MONTHS. or those experiencing the weather shift and all that comes with the change of seasons, motivation to exercise and maintain your once outdoor routine slowly starts to wane with each drop of snow and gust of wind. It’s generally agreed that during the winter months, the pillow calls louder than press-ups, however, since exercise releases endorphins, which make us feel happier and healthier, ditching training for snoozing is not always the answer. If the darker days leave you demotivated and sluggish, here are some tips to winterize your body and stay fit and healthy during the cold months ahead.
F
Join a gym It can be tough to muster the motivation to make it to the gym when the temperature is below zero. But, exercise can boost your mood, and you need that lift even more during the winter, so what better time is there to join a gym, than when winter hits and tries to enforce months of hibernation?
HEALTH
Get more sleep
Home workouts
Lack of sleep can have a serious effect on your immune system, making you more vulnerable to catching colds. Sleep deprivation can often mean high levels of the stress, which also increases your appetite. Maintaininga good sleep routine should help your mood and leave you feeling productive.
A workout DVD or even a quick YouTube search to find indoor aerobic routines can pay off when you have limited space. Committing to a 20-minute blast at home is easier than promising yourself that you will get up early for the gym.
Hydration Winter or summer, dehydration can cause exhaustion, muscle fatigue and loss of coordination. When dehydrated, you can also become more susceptible to winter colds and flu. Not drinking enough water can also make it harder to keep extra pounds off during the shorter days when we tend to exercise less and eat more. If you don't feel like drinking cold water, opt for herbal teas that also offer plenty of antioxidants.
BOOST YOUR DIET No one wants to spend the holidays stuck in bed, and it's no surprise that colder weather brings runny noses and winter coughs, so making sure your immune system is in tip-top condition is important. Eating foods that are high in vitamin C will help keep your immune system strong, so include fruit and veg such as lemons, kiwifruit, oranges and broccoli in your weekly shop.
Dress for the weather The great outdoors Fight the urge to hole up for the winter. Not only do studies claim people have more rigorous and longer workouts when they’re outside, but being around nature has positive psychological effects, including increased selfesteem and lowered depression and fatigue. If you're that person who loves to exercise outside, whether rain or shine, it's important to dress in layers and be prepared for the winter worst. To make it slightly less of a chore, warm up indoors before nipping out.
Sure, stuffing yourself into a parka can make you feel (and, OK, look) like the abominable snowman. But staying warm is a surprising secret to feeling merry. For the easiest spirit-lifter, bundle up; don’t leave home without your scarf, gloves, and hat.

The truth about teeth GOOD ORAL HYGIENE CAN HELP PREVENT PROBLEMS, SAY THE EXPERTS AT IDEAL DENTAL CARE.
F
or healthy teeth and gums follow these guidelines provided by Ideal Dental Care.
Regular check-ups
Prevention is better than cure so we recommend regular six-monthly check-ups, not only to check your teeth but also your gums. We can offer advice on your oral hygiene regime and examine soft tissues for any abnormal changes. Brushing
Regular brushing with a toothpaste containing fluoride remains the most effective way to care for your teeth and gums. Not only does it remove a lot of the plaque that can cause gum disease, but the fluoride in the toothpaste helps prevent tooth decay. Interdental cleaning
Your toothbrush, whether it be a manual or electric toothbrush, can't reach between the teeth. If the remaining plaque and tartar
(calcified plaque) builds up, both are full of bacteria. This bacteria causes inflammation that can cause bleeding gums and in severe cases tooth loss. Recent studies have shown the use of interdental brushes to clean between the teeth is better at removing the plaque than flossing. However in very tight areas flossing is still recommended. An interdental brush is a small brush specially designed for cleaning between your teeth. They come in a wide variety of sizes. Using these once a day, as a complement to brushing, will help keep the gums healthy. Diet
We all know fizzy pop and sweets aren't good for our teeth but there's also sugar hidden in lots of our foods. So always read the labels to check for these hidden sugars. Cutting down the frequency and quantity of sugar consumption will help maintain healthier teeth. And always remember to leave 30 minutes after eating before brushing your teeth.

A new spin ON THINGS One man’s trash is another’s treasure. Tom Wood looks at the growing trend of upcycling. ave you ever thought a door would make a good table? Or a wooden ladder would look great in your living room? Over the last few years the trend for upcycling has become increasingly popular and it is an ideal purse-friendly way for bargain hunters to spice up their homes. Upcycling is all about taking something that is old and dilapidated and transforming it into something useful. You could take an old mug for example, paint it up and turn it into a plant pot to proudly display on the kitchen window. While restoring objects from the back of your cupboard will undoubtedly save you some money – and you will also be doing your bit for the environment – be prepared to invest your time in some TLC as you give furnishings a new lease of life. To add bursts of quirky style to your home, here are some helpful tips, which could give it that all-important boost.
H
• If you have old ornaments lying about, these can be transformed into vintage lamp bases. Drill holes in the top and bottom of the ornament and then feed the plug wire through. Add a lamp shade to top it off. • Fabric cloth is a material that has many good uses when it comes to restyling your home. Stitch together vintage tapestry styles and stuff to create pillows – or even bedside quilts if your sewing is good. • Spray paint is an excellent way to freshen up old picture frames, children’s toys,
lamp bases – anything you can get your hands on really. Experiment with metallics and pastels to turn everyday objects into stylish decor. • For other ideas check out blogs and vlogs such as Buzzfeed DIY, which is littered with step-by-step guides on how to improve your home with ordinary objects. • For those feeling a little more adventurous and wondering if an upcycled feature can be the centre point of your home, the answer – of course – is
‘The next time you come across a big old rustic door, try and imagine what it would look like as a kitchen table, or as the base of a garden bench. After all, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’
yes. With a bit of love and a lick of paint, doors, crate pallets and even easels can be used as kitchen, coffee or bedside tables. And, for the legs, radiator pipes or scaffolding are an excellent option. • For storage, a popular trend at the moment is using wooden ladders as book shelves or condiment storage. • Baths, shopping trolleys and wheelbarrows can all be converted into living room chairs – with the right equipment – when they are cut into shape and made comfortable with cushions. • Perhaps your art and craft skills are not up to scratch, or maybe you don’t have the time to spray paint picture frames. If so, there are some excellent websites that make sure you don’t miss out on upcycled items. Sites like Etsy and Hipcycle all sell handmade, upcycled items from clothes to wardrobes. But be warned, when an item’s popularity increases, as always, so does the price. So if you’re in search of the latest trend, expect to part with a little more cash. Finding and creating upcycled goods is a real art; there are many experts in the industry who have built careers out of transforming items ready for the skip into imaginative features for the home and garden. So the next time you come across a big old rustic door, try and imagine what it would look like as a kitchen table, or as the base of a garden bench. After all, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

PHOEBE SEYMOUR PICKS THE ESSENTIAL ITEMS YOU SHOULD BE WEARING THIS WINTER. hen it comes to our winter wardrobes, it often feels like a choice between looking good, but feeling uncomfortable and wrapping up warm, but looking frumpy. Fortunately, this season’s must-have clothes compromise comfort and high-fashion. Here’s our round-up of the key fashion items that should be in your wardrobe this winter and how to wear them.

THE FUR GILET The gilet is both stylish and warm and with many faux fur versions on the high street, they are both environmentally responsible and great value for money. Go for smooth, longer fur for a luxurious look or opt for a bobbly sheep fleece effect for everyday glamour. How to wear it: As gilets tend to come in natural shades, go for neutral long sleeved tops – this is where the good old striped and polo-neck tops come in - such as black, grey, brown and white. Wear them open or with a matching belt.

THE PARKA
THE CHELSEA BOOTS
Whether you are taking a walk in the countryside or looking around the shops in the city, the parka is the perfect coat this season. Choose a classic khaki with a brown or cream fur hood, or shake things up with an on-trend red or blue fur trim.
Whilst this isn't the first winter they've been on-trend, there's a good reason why Chelsea boots are such an essential item for men and women. They can be dressed up or down and are a great shoe to tackle those frosty mornings – especially if you choose a pair with grips.
How to wear it: Shorter jackets tend to look more casual, whilst a longer coat will complement jeans and jumpers or dresses. Picture: Shum45
How to wear them: Choose a classic black or brown flat pair and couple them with skinny jeans or choose a pair with heels and dress them up with a skirt and tights for a dressycasual look.
THE FLANNEL SHIRT Another brilliant unisex item that can be dressed up or down, the checked flannel shirt has been making waves (or should we say squares) all year. The material is perfect for keeping you warm and stylish, especially when layered up. Vintage shops are the best place to track one down. How to wear it: Buttoned up and tucked in for a smart look or wear it loose and oversized over jeans or leggings for a casual look.
THE DUNGAREE DRESS This has been a ladies essential throughout the summer and autumn months. Classic blue denim will give you a retro casual look, whilst black corduroy can be dressed up for work (depending on your office dress code).

How to wear it: Long-sleeved black and white striped tops are most often teamed up with black dungarees, whilst another key item this winter – the polo neck top – is another great combination.

Leek and Potato Soup Of the winter soups, leek and potato is one of the most comforting and familiar - and makes the most of seasonal, local veg. Ingredients:
50g butter 450g potatoes 1 small onion 450g white parts of leeks (save the green tops for another soup or stock) 850ml light chicken or vegetable stock 142ml carton whipping cream 125ml full-fat milk Small knob of butter Finely chopped chives Method:
1 Melt the butter in a saucepan. When it foams, add the potatoes, onion and leeks and toss until well coated. Season and cook over a gentle heat for 10 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft but not coloured. 2 Pour in the stock, bring to the boil and simmer for five minutes. Do not overcook or the soup will lose its fresh flavour. 3 Purée in a blender until smooth, in batches if necessary, then taste and adjust the
Beef and Onion Cottage Pie Try this dish on a cold, wintry evening when only comfort food will do. Star anise and cloves gives your cottage pie a delicate, festive twist. Ingredients:
Cottage pie mix: 800g lean beef mince 3 carrots 1/2 leek 3 garlic cloves 1 sprig of fresh thyme 2 onions, peeled and thinly sliced 3 dashes of vegetable oil 2 star anise
5 peppercorns 500ml beef stock Potato topping: 4 potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks 100ml skimmed milk 50g butter 2 pinches of sea salt 2 pinches of black pepper
Method:
1 Peel and roughly dice two of the carrots and peel and thinly slice the remaining. Wash and dice the leek and bruise the garlic cloves. Pick the leaves from 1 sprig of thyme and leave the other sprig whole. 2 Place a pan over a medium heat and add a drizzle of vegetable oil. Once the oil is hot, add the onions and caramelise for 20 minutes, stirring every few minutes. 3 Place a separate pan over a high heat and
seasoning. Return the soup to a pan and stir in three quarters of the cream and all the milk. 4 To finish, finely shred the white leek and gently cook it in hot butter for a few minutes until softened but not coloured. Reheat the soup to a gentle simmer (add some extra stock at this point if too thick), then pour into bowls. Drizzle the remaining cream over each serving.
add a dash of vegetable oil. Add the carrot slices (reserving the diced carrot) to the pan. Season with salt and add the star anise. Cook for two minutes, then turn down the heat and continue to cook for approximately 10 minutes, stirring regularly until the carrots just start to soften, remove and set aside 4 Peel and chop the potatoes and add to a saucepan of cold salted water, cover and bring to the boil. Once boiling, continue to cook for approximately 20 minutes until tender. In a separate saucepan, bring the milk and butter just to the boil. 5 Drain the potatoes in a colander, then mash and fold in the hot milk and butter. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. 6 Preheat the oven to 220°C/gas mark 7. 7 Add a splash of vegetable oil to a large casserole dish and place over a medium-high heat until hot. Lightly season the mince and add to the dish. Cook until lightly coloured all over. 8 Add the diced carrots, leeks, peppercorns, garlic and sprig of thyme. Cook for five minutes, add to the stock and simmer for 1520 minutes. Fold in the soft carrot slices and caramelised onions. Remove from the heat 9 Put the mixture in a large family-style dish and pipe or spoon the mash on top. 10 Cook for 12 minutes or until the mash is golden. Serve immediately

Apple crumble topping: 250g plain flour 170g butter 110g macadamia nuts 110g almonds, nibbed 110g Demerara sugar 4 drops of vanilla extract Salt Apple crumble filling: 4 Granny Smith apples 50g butter 200g blackberries 50g sugar Method:

Combine all the topping ingredients in a food processor and blend until the mixture is the texture of breadcrumbs. 2 Spread out the crumble on a baking tray and put it in the oven for 30-40 minutes, being sure to stir the crumble mixture every 10 minutes. Remove when the mixture is golden brown and set aside to cool. 3 Peel and core the apples then cut them into even-sized pieces about 3-4cm wide. Put a heavy-based saucepan over a medium heat and add the butter. When it starts to foam, add the apple pieces. 4 Cook gently for 5-8 minutes until the apple is just becoming tender, then add the blackberries and sugar and continue cooking for a further 810 minutes. 5 Spoon the filling into an ovenproof dish and sprinkle liberally with the crumble topping. Bake for 10-12 minutes before serving with hot custard, cream or vanilla ice-cream.
