slip mats, integrated LED lighting, drawer organisers and splashback hanging storage. Mr and Mrs Jones’ kitchen showcases the quality of their design capability and craftsmanship. Mr and Mrs Jones wanted a modern kitchen that was designed to be easy to use, and built from robust components and materials. German engineering was the perfect solution. They chose Concept Interiors due to their ability to provide a high-quality product, as well as the honesty and openness the team displayed when discussing their requirements. After Mr and Mrs Jones chose a kitchen from the displays in the new showroom in Sheffield, the Concept team helped produce the best possible kitchen design to fit the space, using their extensive experience in designing, supplying and installing kitchens in

a variety of different sized and shaped spaces. The handleless design makes for a clean and minimal look, making it perfect for the modern look Mr and Mrs Jones were looking for. Following completion of the project, which included ripping out the existing kitchen, plastering, electrics, plumbing, furniture, worktops, flooring, glass splashbacks and decorating, here is what they had to say: “From the moment we walked into Concept Interiors showroom and saw the style and quality of the kitchen units on display, we just knew this was the kitchen we wanted. Kieron in the showroom led us step by step through the procedure, listening and advising us on every stage of the planning and execution of the work and fitting. The work was done in a quick, efficient and clean and friendly manner. “Special praise and thanks must go to the specialists and workmen who made everything special for us – especially Ian the fitter, Martin and Joe the electricians, Ryan the decorator, Lee the plumber and Alan Twelvetrees for fitting the flooring. “If you are looking for a quality kitchen expertly fitted we would certainly recommend Concept Interiors. Personally we couldn’t be more pleased.”

GARDENS

Spicing up a small space WHO SAYS SIZE MATTERS? WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR GARDEN, YOU DON’T NEED ROOM TO IMPRESS, WRITES EMILY SMITH. ring life back into your home this spring by making the most of a small garden. With winter well behind us, there’s no excuse to keep your backyard on the back-burner – and reviving limited outdoor space doesn’t need to be a game of Tetris. Grab your shovel and dig into these tips on growing a green thumb.

B

Upcycling Rather than throwing away old wooden furniture, tempt your creative side by repurposing them outdoors. Repaint and reuse broken shelves as storage for plants, use bright chairs to add a quirky character, or even repurpose a birdbath as a plant pot. With upcycling you can make the most of what you already have, without any extra spending. www.upcycled-wonders.com/garden 26 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

Adjust the lighting Turn up the lights – and the liveliness – of a small garden by adding a sense of spark. Combining fairy lights within foliage, dotting lanterns around furniture, or even highlighting a pathway, can all jazz up a gloomy space. This growing trend has seen solar powered lighting skyrocket, so maintenance isn’t an issue for scatter-brains. www.thesolarcentre.co.uk

GARDENS

A pop of colour Through perky plant pots and cheerful furniture, a small pop of colour can go a long way for a small space. Freshening up with florals gives a brighter appearance, and doing this through pots allows hassle-free portability when you fancy a change.

Plant hangers Grow your garden upwards with hanging planters, without jeopardising precious floor space. Ceramic plant hangers, flower baskets, and tiered pots allow you to exploit all angles of your backyard, and they can even be made at home. Incorporate wooden climbers along walls for vines to spread on, for an even cosier feel.

Fire features

Flowing features

Fire pits add a striking style – and a surge of heat – to a chilly garden, all whilst having a cosy feel. Adding anything from a chiminea, barbeque, or a contemporary fire pit means the excuse of it being too cold won’t be an issue, and is perfect for an evening get together.

Implementing a water-based feature brings a calming flow to your garden with minimal effort. A bird bath, tiered fountain or cascading water piece can sit happily in any corner of your garden and take up little room, or act as a grand centrepiece.

www.homebase.co.uk/our-range/outdoorliving/outdoor-heating

www.primrose.co.uk

Houseplants Bring the houseplant bandwagon into your home by adding low-maintenance plants to empty shelves or windowsills. This feel-good décor technique will see you reap the benefits of air purification, reducing levels of dust and stabilising air temperatures. Sheer style and luxury – on tap! ick and Rachel McKee from Holmesfield had decided their bungalow’s bathroom was looking dated, and after contacting a few bathroom companies, they were left feeling deflated at only being offered replacement units without any design or flair. However, visiting Bubble & Soak at their Dronfield showroom opened their eyes to what could be achieved by totally redesigning their bathroom, even creating more space. “Natalie, the showroom manager, was very creative with her designs, showing us how we would lose our cramped, raised shower unit and replace it with a walk-in wet room shower.” says Rachel. This created a larger shower area, whilst creating more floor space. “We loved all the design ideas and the bathroom looks much bigger.” When Bubble & Soak removed Nick and Rachel’s old bathroom suite, they discovered the previous shower unit had been leaking for quite some time. Although this was a complication they could have done without, Bubble & Soak resolved all the issues by firstly drying out the affected area, then adding a damp proof membrane to ensure no future complications. Using a selection of Villeroy & Boch rimless toilet, Hansgrohe shower, mixer and spout, Meryln shower screen and a luxury freestanding bath, this really is a Designer bathroom. What’s more, the recessed, made-to-measure mirror was created by building out a false wall, which also created a luxury storage shelf. All beautifully finished with Vogue radiator and classic, contemporary floor tiles, it certainly gives the ‘wow factor’, and the McKees are thrilled with their fabulous new wet room bathroom.

Rural retreat COUNTRY CHIC HAS BEEN GIVEN A MODERN TWIST. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR. orget everything you thought you knew about country décor. Forget the traditional chequered sofas, animal ornaments and distressed shabby chic furniture. This year, it’s all about adding a modern twist to a classic British look. No country home would be complete without a sumptuous armchair, but opt for one with metallic legs or a less typical shape to give your living room an edge. Stoves and kettles are more cottage-esque must-haves for those colder spring days, as are plenty of blankets, but ditch the tartan for on-trend geometric or plain throws in neutral beiges or warming browns. Reclaimed furniture is another way to add a rough and ready, yet stylish, centrepiece to your dining and living areas. Wicker baskets,

Weddings and Wills: Do you know the score? t’s something that tends not to feature prominently on the long list of wedding preparations: flowers, catering, invitations and music, make a new will… But did you know that getting married revokes your existing will? This means that you might be blissfully unaware that your will is invalid and consequently on your death your estate would pass under the intestacy rules rather than in accordance with your will. This issue was highlighted in the recent case of DMM. Mr DMM had a valid will which left his estate to his partner of 20 years and his three daughters. When he and his partner decided to get married, his daughters tried to prevent him from doing so on the grounds that he lacked mental capacity. One of his daughters had Power of Attorney for him in respect of his financial affairs and it was argued that he did not have sufficient understanding to enter into a valid marriage. The legal effect of getting married would be to revoke his existing will and his wife would receive much more of his estate under the intestacy rules than she would have got under the will. The court held that, whilst Mr DMM did not have capacity to change the provisions of the Power of Attorney, he did have capacity to marry. The judge noted that capacity to marry requires an appreciation of the fact that marriage will invalidate an existing will, and he found that in this case Mr DMM did understand that fact. By contrast, courts have previously found, (and this judge confirmed), that in determining mental capacity to marry, it is not necessary to understand what the financial consequences of divorce would be.

I

James Laycock, Partner in our Will Trust and Estate disputes team comments:

“Under the Mental Capacity Act, capacity is issue specific, so you might have capacity to do one thing but not another. In this case the expert brought in to assess Mr DMM thought that he did not have capacity to revoke the power of attorney made in favour of his daughter but he did have capacity to marry his long term partner. The test for whether an individual has capacity to make a will is slightly different again and we frequently see challenges to wills because it is asserted the testator did not have sufficient mental capacity for the will to be valid. Had it been an issue here, it may or may not have been found that Mr DMM had capacity to make a new will. However, the court’s conclusion that he had capacity to marry would automatically (assuming the wedding happened) substantially change the inheritance entitlements of his daughters and his proposed wife. Not many people appreciate that getting married will revoke an existing will. This point has been raised by the Law Commission in the recent consultation on wills and it has been questioned whether the law should be changed in this area. In any event, there should be greater awareness of this issue.” Contact James on DDI: 0113 3946 809 or Phone: 0370 1500 100 Extension: 6809 James.Laycock@IrwinMitchell.com @WillDisputes_IM

Zoe Round, Associate Director in our Family Law team comments:

“When considering getting married it’s worth thinking about the possible benefits of a prenuptial agreement, in particular because it offers greater certainty in the event the marriage breaks down. But while most people are aware that divorce can have significant financial implications and celebrity and high net worth divorces are highly publicised in the media, the impact of marriage and divorce on inheritance is much less talked about. Not only does marriage invalidate an existing will and confer new entitlements on each spouse, but the effect of divorce is that your former spouse is treated as having pre-deceased you – so any provisions in your will relating to your former spouse can no longer take effect. This may effectively render the will useless. It’s essential whenever you have a major life event that you take advice. Together with our colleagues across Private Wealth we offer our clients holistic and comprehensive advice about their circumstances so they can be prepared for whatever might follow.” Contact Zoe on 0114 274 4400 or Phone: 0370 1500 100 Extension: 4400 zoe.round@irwinmitchell.com @IMFamilyLaw

A right to be informed GRAYSONS SOLICITORS’ JENNIFER WALKER EXPLAINS THE CHANGES TO EMPLOYEE DATA MANAGEMENT UNDER GDPR. he much talked of General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) contain greater rights for employees and, while many of the rights are similar to those found in the current Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA), some new rights are introduced under GDPR as well as significant penalties for breaches. Employees have a right to be informed. This encompasses the obligation on employers to provide transparency over how personal data is used. This is typically through a privacy notice. GDPR sets out the information that must be supplied to an employee and the timing of this. The information given to data subjects (individuals who are the subjects of the data) about the employer’s intentions in respect of their personal data must be concise, transparent, intelligible and easily accessible, be written in clear and plain language and be free of charge. Similar to the DPA, employees also have the ‘right to restrict’ the processing of their personal data. In other words, they have the right to block or suppress the processing of their personal data (generally ‘processing’ means any operation performed on personal data including the collection, recording, organisation, storage, alteration, retrieval, use, disclosure or dissemination, restriction or erasure of personal data). When processing is restricted, an employer is permitted to store the personal data, but not further process it. Furthermore, an employer is permitted to retain enough information about the employee to ensure that the restriction is respected in future. Employers are required to restrict the processing of personal data in a number of

T

circumstances. For example, where an employee contests the accuracy of the personal data, an employer should restrict the processing until it has verified the accuracy of that data. An employer should also restrict the processing of an employee’s data where they have objected, and the employer is assessing whether its legitimate grounds override those of the individual employee. Processing can also be restricted where an employer no longer needs the personal data, but the employee requires the data to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim. Also, processing of data will be restricted where that processing is unlawful and the employee opposes erasure of the data. If an employer has disclosed the personal data in question to others, it must contact each recipient and inform them of the restriction on the processing of the personal data unless this proves impossible or involves disproportionate effort. An employer must also inform the affected employee if it decides to lift a restriction on processing. As with DPA, employees have a ‘right of access’ and the information requested must now be provided without delay and at the latest within one month of receipt. The GDPR also provides employees with the ‘right to rectification,’ which is similar to the DPA, and this means that employees are entitled to have personal data rectified if it is inaccurate or incomplete. An employer must respond to a rectification request within one month and this can be extended to two months where the rectification is complex. GDPR provides employees with a new ‘right to erasure’, also known as the ‘right to be forgotten’, and this applies, for example, when the personal data is no longer necessary

Jennifer Walker

for the purposes for which is was collected, when the individual withdraws consent, or where the employee objects to processing and the employer does not have a legitimate business reason for processing that is compelling enough to override the employee’s objection. Employers should already have in place, or be in the process of putting in place, appropriate measures to ensure and demonstrate that they comply with GDPR, such as staff training, internal audits of processing activities, reviews of internal HR policies and having a privacy notice. Alastair Norton

Working together FROM SMALL EXTENSIONS TO MAJOR PROPERTY DEVELOPMENTS, NO JOB IS TOO BIG OR TOO SMALL FOR NORTON MAYFIELD ARCHITECTS. s one of the most vibrant cities in the UK, Sheffield deserves some of the most inspiring work and living spaces. Fittingly so, Norton Mayfield Architects, based in one of the city’s iconic industrial buildings, is helping make that happen. Established in 2006, the business has been based at Harland Works for over six years. Alastair Norton and Ben Mayfield met at university and after gaining significant experience, set up the business in London. After steadily growing through recommendations and repeat work, Alastair opened the office in Sheffield in 2007. Ben and Alastair have more than 40 years’ experience between them. Despite undertaking many projects in London and around the country, Alastair and his team have taken a keen interest in the local architecture scene for many years, and are looking to build an even stronger local client base. Alastair is a former president of the Sheffield Society of Architects and has taken part in projects including Dear Sheffield, which produced postcards from Sheffielder’s celebrating the city’s buildings and spaces. Norton Mayfield Architects is a RIBA chartered practice with eight architectural staff based at their Sheffield office.

A

From small extensions under £40,000, to major property developments at over £4million, no job is too big or too small. Alastair and his architects have worked on a number of listed building conversions and many projects in conservation areas, as well as property developments completely from scratch. The team are happy to work with your own builders and collaborate effectively with interior designers. Some clients just come to Norton Mayfield for their preliminary designs, while many others work with them through to completion. Either way, it all starts with an initial consultation. “An initial consultation is about finding out what our client’s needs are so we can offer the right service for them,” says Alastair. “Some have a vague idea about a project, but need direction, so those consultations are about exploring the possibilities. Others know exactly what they want, so it’s a more indepth discussion about how to best execute their project. “Our internal ethos is about enjoying what we do. Externally, we believe in collaborating – working with, rather than for, clients. We create really rewarding relationships that way. We are creative, but understand that project guidelines and budgets need to be worked to.”

And throughout 2018, when you have an initial consultation, you will also have a chance to help raise money for a local charity. St. Wilfrid’s Centre is Norton Mayfield’s nominated charity for the year. Book an initial one-hour in-depth consultation in exchange for a suggested donation of £50 and help homeless, vulnerable and socially excluded adults improve their quality of life. Your consultation will include a no obligation quote. Alastair and the team have already raised funds for various charities on an ad hoc basis, as well as providing pro-bono services to community projects such as The Appletree Nursery in Grenoside and The Barnsley Civic, and now look forward to building a rewarding alliance with the local charity based on Queens Road. WEDDINGS

Plan for perfection HANNAH SANDERS HAS SOME FANTASTIC IDEAS FOR SPRING WEDDINGS. ou’ve found the perfect partner, squealed an excited yes and popped more than a few champagne corks to celebrate. With spring just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start planning your dream wedding. Often described as one of the most romantic seasons, it boasts feelings of rebirth, growth and excitement in a way that that no other season does. It’s the perfect time to say goodbye to the chills of winter and welcome clear skies and wonderful smells of flowers in bloom. So, if you’ve always wanted to have a spring wedding, here are some ideas to help you create the perfect day.

Y

Venue The venue is one of the most important aspects of your big day, so it’s key to take your time and choose the place that is right for you both. The warmer weather opens more doors, meaning you can make full use of the outdoors. Visit castles and stately homes which with their stunning gardens will be an ideal setting for an unforgettable wedding. If you want something more traditional, choose your local church for the ceremony followed by a reception at a favourite hotel or, if you want to embrace the open air opt a barn or even rent a field, fill it with marquees and dance the night away in the great outdoors. A wedding reception really can be

Cake A showstopper wedding cake is a must and a spring wedding means you can make full use of pastel icing and spring flowers. Pick a wedding cake that summons the taste of spring with in-season berries and fruit. Instead of a buttercream filling, consider a fresh strawberry puree filling or even a lemon cake with blackberry filling. Keep the outside simple by decorating it with a waterfall of seasonal blooms and a silhouette cake topper. If you have your heart set on a chocolate cake, but still want it to reflect the season choose the popular ‘naked cakes’ and fill it with a chocolate cherry ganache. In keeping with pastel colours, why not create an ombre three-tier cake? Use blues, pinks or purples and decorate with a ‘tied the knot’ topper.

60 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

anywhere, so if you are wanting something low key or close to home, why not have it in your own back garden? Decorate it with a heap of fairy lights, put on a buffet and fill it with bright flowers.

Favours Give out seed packages as favours, so your guests can take one and watch love grow. Alternatively fill small glass bottles with loose leaf teas, so your guests can take home the taste of spring. Why not create mini birds’ nests full of mini-eggs, offer up mini boxes full of strawberry and toffee popcorn or simply have a pick ‘n’ mix stand so they can help themselves to childhood favourites.

Colour schemes Orchid is a soft, romantic shade that works well with almost any other colour. Pair it with a deep hunter green to add the perfect contrast. For something sleeker opt for a silver theme and add a splash of sweet melon orange to brighten up the venue. Throw in strands of bulb lights, florals and greenery along with copper and metallic accents to bring the venue to chic perfection. Why not try a warm light brown with creamy rose and light dusty blue? This airy palette creates a soothing and comforting feel and makes merging vintage with modern easy.

Décor Decorations set the tone for the entire day, so you need to be sure that you love the décor at both the ceremony and reception. Spring is synonymous with rebirth and growth so DIY watering cans are an ideal decoration. Simply fill them with water, adding a selection of colourful flowers - you can even paint them to match your décor. Make potted table numbers with succulents. These blend well with almost any centrepiece and you can plant them weeks in advance. Enjoying fresh fruit is a treat in the spring, so bring that feeling to your wedding by setting up a farmer’s market fruit stand. Pick up different types of crates, add chalkboard signs and a pretty hand lettered sign to let your guests know they can help themselves.

WEDDINGS

Bridesmaids and groomsmen To make your groomsmen stand out from the crowd, have each one wear a different shade of pastel with a different brightly coloured flower in the jacket. For the bridesmaid dresses, choose wrap dresses in dusty blues, light pinks, greens or even yellows. Pair them with bright tulip bouquets, vintage parasols and floral headdresses.

Bride and groom wear For the bride the world really is your oyster when it comes to outfit choice. Go for an open-back or off the shoulder lace or embellished dress to truly embrace the season. You could even add a dash of colour with embroidered flowers or a pastel cardigan. Opt for a fifties-style fit or a flare dress and pair it with a white denim jacket for a touch of true vintage styling. For a more traditional look, pair your dress with a cape or caplet to add a touch of elegance. When it comes to the groom’s attire, it’s important for him to look stylish while still being comfortable. Grey is a more rustic alternative to the traditional black for spring. And as the weather warms up, they can always skip the jacket but keep the look smart by adding waistcoats and flat caps. If you are wanting a more classic appearance, then introduce some spring colour through the tie and pocket chief for a timeless and elegant look.

WEDDING PLANNING TIPS: * Be practical when it comes to looking at wedding venues for your reception * Go to wedding fairs, they are a great source of inspiration * Go seasonal and go bold with colours * Be prepared for any weather by having brollies and wellies on hand just in case * Always allow extra time for travel * Choose a versatile venue

EATING OUT

All in the detail IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS THAT ELEVATE A CLASSIC AFTERNOON TEA AT THE LEOPOLD HOTEL TO ANOTHER LEVEL, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. hen it comes to serving a truly splendid afternoon tea it’s the tiny details that matter. From the venue to the table settings, everything has to be just right. Let’s face it there aren’t going to be too many surprises on the menu. Sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, a selection of cakes and pastries, pot of tea… it’s the same the world over, and an increasing number of cafes and restaurants are serving up their take on this English classic. But at the Leopold Hotel this timeless ritual just seems, a little nicer, a little grander, and a glorious treat, at any time of day. This four-star boutique hotel, built on the former site of a Grade II listed boys’ grammar school in the heart of Sheffield city centre, was restored in some style a few years back with a bright and buzzing lounge bar that’s just perfect for sipping a classic cocktail and people-watching, thanks to its irresistible views over the ever-changing scenery of Leopold Square with its myriad bars and restaurants. But we stepped away from the hustle and bustle of a busy Saturday afternoon into one of the rooms more closely connected to the Leopold’s past life as a seat of learning. This being Mother’s Day weekend, quite a few people had the same idea and the setting, a graceful room with dark oak panelling on the walls and a tiled marble fireplace, with nothing but the gentle murmur of conversation and the chinking of tea cups to

W

68 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

break the spell, was just perfect. There’s a lovely uniformity about the Leopold take on afternoon tea. The chaotic modern trend for shabby-chic vintage mismatched cups and saucers is rejected in favour of classic white plates, cups, saucers and teapots, with white tablecloths and a single white candle on every table. Service is unobtrusive but attentive and began, on this occasion, with a real treat, a glass of chilled Rosé Tattinger Champagne which was on offer for £5 in honour of the weekend. Looking around the room it was a very popular choice with the mums. We opted for the Very Traditional Afternoon Tea (£13.75 per person). There’s a wide selection of teas but for me a strong, classic breakfast brew was called for. Then came the classic three-tier cake stand. On the bottom layer there was a selection of sandwiches (egg and rocket, ham salad, tuna salad) and blinis with smoked salmon. The sandwiches, delicate fingers with the crusts removed naturally, were the picture of elegance and packed with flavour. The middle tier contained raisin scones with thick clotted cream and strawberry jam. You may have noticed a small debate recently about the correct way to serve your scone, once it’s been halved. Jam first then cream (the Cornwall way) or cream then jam (as favoured in Devon). Seeing as we’re in South Yorkshire it doesn’t seem worth falling out over. For what it’s worth, I think the glutton’s approach of simply piling as much of both on

as possible before gravity takes over is the only sensible solution. They were delicious, what more do you need to know? So far, so restrained, but there was still the top tier to go and it was generously packed with sweet treats – a rich, fudgy chocolate cake, an individual Bakewell tart, a lemon macaron and a lemon posset with fruits of the forest topping. The macaron was magnificent – just two bites and it was gone but the perfect slightly crisp and chewy texture and the creamy lemon filling were a match made it confectioners’ heaven. Meanwhile the contrast of the sweet posset and ultra-sharp forest fruits in their dark, unsweetened berry juices, proved to be the perfect final taste of a teatime treat to recall with relish. CAN’T WAIT TO GET MARRIED? HERE’S HOW TO GET HITCHED IN A HURRY. BY PHOEBE SEYMOUR

LOVE ON THE RUN here’s something dangerous and decadent about the very concept of getting married in a hurry. What’s the rush and why the secrecy? Is there a jilted fiancé in the background wondering what on earth just happened, or a disapproving father brandishing a shotgun? The real reason may be slightly less exciting. Perhaps you don’t want the fuss of a grand-scale wedding that takes a year to plan and another ten to pay for, or you just like the idea of a spurof-the moment romantic gesture. Whatever the reason, if you want to ditch all the stress, expense and logistics involved in a major production, there are simpler and cheaper alternatives.

T

The basics So, how quickly can you get married? For most marriages or civil partnerships you need to give at least 28 days’ notice at your local registry office. This must include details of where you intend to get married or form a civil partnership.reg You may also need to give notice here if you plan to marry or form a civil partnership abroad. Ask the overseas authority if you’ll need a ‘certificate of no impediment’. If you want to get married in a Jewish, Quaker, non-Anglican Christian or another religious ceremony, you are again, required to give your registry office at least 28 days’ notice. However, if you get married in an Anglican church, the rules are different again. You don’t usually need to give notice with the registry office if you’re getting married in an Anglican church in England or Wales and both you and your partner are British citizens or from the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland. Officials performing Anglican marriages will register your marriage. To be legally married, costs start at around £120. That covers fees for the notice of marriage and a brief registry office service on a weekday. Start by making an appointment with your registry office. To find out more about what you need to do to get married in the UK, visit www.gov.uk/marriages-civil-partnerships.

The extras There’s nothing to say that you have to have a white dress, but if you have your heart set on one, book your boutique appointments as soon as possible and be as decisive as you can. Take into account that if you do need your dress altering, this can take at least a few weeks through the boutique. Otherwise, consider taking your dress to an external alteration service, which should be much quicker. If you really want to keep things small and simple, consider having your reception in the function room of your favourite bar, or better still, have a gathering in your home (or a friend’s if theirs is bigger). If it’s a nice day, a garden party with an awning, basic decorations such as flowers and jam-jar lanterns and tables and chairs would be ideal. Put on your own buffet and buy a simple white cake and you have yourself a reception. You may be tempted to book caterers and a band or DJ, but if you are looking for a quick, no-fuss wedding, these are extras you can do without. Other couples may decide to go without the reception and go straight from the ceremony to the honeymoon. If you are looking for wedding reception inspiration, www.pinterest.co.uk is a good place to start. 72 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

How I organised my perfect quickie wedding

Shauna and Dan

The location If you are looking for a local non-fuss wedding, a registry office is the obvious choice. It’s ideal if you’d like to invite your nearest and dearest, and as registry offices are based in city centres, it’s a central venue for everyone. If you are wanting to elope by yourselves or with just a couple of witnesses, Gretna Green and Las Vegas are popular options for quickie weddings. The beauty of these options is that they can be a wedding and honeymoon location in one. With Gretna Green being closer, you can keep your costs down when it comes to travel, and a range of packages are available – with or without a Scottish twist.

Now the classic quick wedding destination, it's so easy to marry in Las Vegas – all you need to do is show up at the Marriage Licence Bureau with your passport and the fee. Whether you want a glitzy casino wedding or a package deal from a wedding chapel, there are lots of options to choose from. Gibraltar, St Lucia and Denmark are also fast becoming popular options due to their relaxed marriage legalities and stunning scenery. To find out more about Gretna Green wedding packages, visit www.gretnagreen.com/weddingpackages-b6 and for more information on getting married abroad, visit www.gov.uk/marriage-abroad.

Gretna Green is a popular option for a quickie wedding

When Shauna’s finance, Dan, found out his mother was terminally ill, they decided to push their wedding forward. In just six weeks, they managed to organise a simple, yet romantic wedding. “We considered running off to Gretna Green or one of the prettier registry offices across the country, but ultimately we wanted to make it easier for our mums to be there,” explains Shauna. “The Pateley Bridge Village near Knaresbrough was another option, but they were keen for us to attend church for a few weeks first. Finally, we decided on Bakewell as the beautiful scenery stole our hearts. It was also ideal for hitting the road straight to Manchester airport for our honeymoon in Paris. “We got married on 22 September 2012 at the registry office in Bakewell's old town hall, then went down to the river to toast our marriage with six guests and a bottle of champagne. “That night, we clinked our glasses over duck à l'orange gazing at the Eiffel tower with a pianist playing a jazz version of Always a Woman by Billy Joel. It just so happened to be our song! “Sadly, Dan’s mum died 10 days before the wedding. It was such a meaningful and emotional wedding day. There were a few tears, but it was a stunningly sunny day and one of the happiest of my life

WESTSIDE RESTAURANT & BAR AWARDS

Strictly come dining! THERE’S A NEW LOOK TO THE 2018 WESTSIDE RESTAURANT & BAR AWARDS – AND WE NEED YOUR HELP.

8 201 E ID S ST BAR WE T& N A R S TAU RES AWARD

he search is on for the finest dining and drinking establishments across Sheffield and North Derbyshire, as we launch the 2018 Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards. This year’s event is bigger and better than ever with an additional focus on the region’s blossoming drinking scene, and new categories to encompass the welcome recent explosion of micro-pubs and wine bars. We are also looking for a much greater involvement from Westside readers, as we ask them to help us make the big decisions in all the major categories. As in previous years we’ll be revealing all the winners at Baldwins Omega. It will be the end of an era for this legendary Sheffield banqueting venue which closes for the final time a few weeks after our awards dinner on Monday 4 June. We know that standards of food and

T

Warren Donahue & Abbie Kirwin celebrate their success

service will be as high as ever and before we search for a new venue for next year’s event we’re determined to make this last farewell at Baldwins our biggest and best awards dinner yet. Last year’s big winners were The Samuel Fox Country Inn who scooped two prizes on the night – Best Contemporary Restaurant and the coveted Westside Restaurant of the Year. Now the search is on again to find the venues that have truly excelled in the art of delivering delicious food and beverages in a superlative setting. All our recent award winners have been superb, so expectations are high. Here’s a reminder to all restaurant, hotel, café and pub owners: to make sure your establishment is under consideration for the big prizes in 2018, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk

JOIN OUR JUDGING PANEL

Westside readers… get involved We want you to join us in making sure our final verdict is a true reflection of what paying customers across the region really think. Westside’s team of reviewers will be out and about, checking out established and new venues, and searching for the best the region has to offer. We will bring our own opinions to bear of course, but we also know Westside readers are a discerning bunch who travel the region to experience the best restaurants, bistros, pubs and wine bars. That’s why for 2018 we are changing our judging criteria, to give our readers a bigger say. After we have done the rounds of the

region’s finest eateries we’ll be publishing our shortlist of the best venues in all categories, from best contemporary restaurant to best pub. Once the shortlists are revealed, we’ll be asking our readers to have their say on the best in each category. We’ll add up the reader votes, put them with our judges’ own views and come up with the best of the best. Sounds a bit like how the voting works on Strictly Come Dancing, doesn’t it? OK, this is Westside’s version of Strictly Come Dining! That comes later in the year… we’ll be publishing our shortlists and telling our readers how they can get involved in the June issue of Westside.

We also want to give Westside readers a voice on the independent judging panel that decides the ultimate prize – the Westside Restaurant of the Year. The search is on to find one reader to join with our other judges, all chosen for their knowledge of food and their passion for dining out on the Westside scene, to eat together at the three venues that are shortlisted for the Westside Restaurant of the Year. You can leave your credit cards at home; all we want is your opinions. And you will need to clear your diary for a few dates later this year when we bring the judges together to dine out and make their choices. Does this opportunity tickle your tastebuds? To apply for a place on our judging panel, please email the editor, Chris Wilson, at chris.wilson@rmcmedia.co.uk and tell him in no more than 150 words what qualities you think the judges should be looking out for in the search for Westside’s Restaurant of the Year.

Bright young things IF YOU HAVEN’T ENTERED OUR YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR COMPETITION YET, NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT... here’s still time for the region’s best young chefs to be entered in our competition to find the culinary stars of tomorrow. Westside and My Fathers Heart are joining forces to stage a fantastic competition to find the Young Chef of the Year 2018. We’re asking head chefs and restaurateurs to tell us about any bright sparks working in their kitchens, who they think are shaping up to be outstanding chefs of the future. Our competition is open to anyone working in restaurants in the Sheffield and North Derbyshire region, and all entries must be under the age of 25 on 1 June 2018. Four finalists will be invited to join us for a MasterChef-style cooking competition in the state-of-the-art kitchens at My Fathers Heart on Saturday 12 May. That’s their opportunity to create their signature main course, which will be judged by a panel of culinary experts led by Mick Burke, who spent 37 years teaching thousands of students the fine art of cooking in his role as senior chef lecturer at Sheffield College. EATING OUT

Classic flavours THE PEACOCK INN AT CUTTHORPE IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR THE QUINTESSENTIAL SUNDAY LUNCH, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. t was one of those deceptively pretty winter days, and under a brilliant, blue cloudless sky the Peacock Inn at Cutthorpe was wearing its Sunday best. It was enough to tempt a few hardy souls to take their pints and wine glasses outside into the immaculately tidy beer garden... but mostly they admitted defeat after a few minutes and came in for a warm. It’ll be a few more weeks before we’re ready for that kind of thing. Those who stayed the course seemed to be proving a point rather than actually enjoying themselves. Man’s best friend knew better. This is one of the nicest dog-friendly pubs I’ve encountered and a quartet of posh pedigree pooches found a warm patch of carpet to curl up on in the bar, casting languid but sharp eyes around the room, searching for friendly (or careless) crisp-munchers. If you’re looking for a cosy country pub to read the papers after a brisk walk (with or without canine companion) this is the place, with Linacre Reservoirs within easy strolling distance. But the real meat of the matter on this particular day was the classic Sunday roast - a meal that has become an occasional treat for me rather than a weekly mainstay, since her indoors swore off meat and I agreed to remove temptation from the home and restrict my carnivore habits to restaurants. So many pubs do this sort of thing poorly -

I

92 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

wafer thin slices of overcooked grey meat, watery gravy, soggy overcooked veg... you know the score. We aren’t exactly spoilt for choice when it comes to ‘proper’ Sunday lunch venues. But The Peacock, which has quite an extensive food menu from Monday to Saturday, narrows down the choices on Sunday and concentrates on getting the essentials just right. There were three roasts on this occasion – beef, lamb and roast pork loin – all £13.95 served with Yorkshire puddings and green vegetables. I chose the roast pork loin (those magic words ‘with crackling’ spoke to my soul) and was rewarded with a truly wonderful hunk of moist, fragrant, tender pork, served on the bone, with crunchy roast potatoes, a giant Yorkshire pudding and a good selection of roasted and steamed vegetables that were definitely not soggy. Oh, and a nice chunk of chunky crackling on the side. This is what Sunday lunch should be all about. I wondered whether those veggie principles might be tested to breaking point but no, a main course of butternut squash risotto with parmesan and pine nuts (£12.95) was ordered and pronounced very fine, well-seasoned with the rice served at its al dente peak. Our meal had begun with two very well received starters – a rich and smooth duck liver parfait served with necessarily sharp chutney and croutes(£5) and a wonderfully aromatic beetroot soup (£5), pleasingly

spiked with crumbly goats cheese. As well as having a good selection of handpulled ales, The Peacock has a strong wine list including some excellent choices by the glass. A small glass of gooseberry-fresh Camino Sauvignon Blanc (£3.90) cut through the richness of the pate and a large glass of Percheron Shiraz (£6.05) was bursting with dark berry flavours and a hint of pepper. We ended on a high note with two contrasting desserts. Sticky toffee pudding, with toffee sauce and ice cream (£5) was classic old-school comfort food while Turkish delight panna cotta (£5) was a true delicacy, with gentle hints of rose flavours and a very nice wobble. If your perfect Sunday demands a classic Sunday lunch, spread your wings and head for the Peacock Inn. EATING OUT

Make time for Nonnas FROM BREAKFAST TO DINNER, PHOEBE SEYMOUR DISCOVERS THAT THE ECCLESALL ROAD FAVOURITE IS THE PERFECT CHOICE. f there’s one emotion that sums up the Italians, it’s got to be passion - a passion for relationships, for conversation, and most importantly, for food. As my friend Shauna and I relaxed in the candle-lit restaurant side of Nonnas, it quickly became apparent I was in Ecclesall Road’s very own little Italy. Our waiter, Enrico, chatted away with pride about their extensive wine list (all Italian of course) and pasta made fresh on the premises, two ladies were sat in the corner enjoying a bottle of wine and singing along to a jazzypop song and we could even hear the chef letting out a hearty laugh in the kitchen. Eccy Road regulars will know that Nonnas is a must for any wine lover, and their AA Notable Wine List Award 2016-2017 confirms this. But there is much more to the bar and restaurant than that. Serving breakfast, brunch, lunch and an early bird special from 5pm until 7pm, as well as the a la carte menu that changes every four months, Nonnas take meal times seriously. They even have their own cookbook, Strada Della Nonna (published by RMC Media, of course) which Shauna owns and is a huge fan of. In fact, she was so excited to be invited along, I was surprised she hadn’t brought it

I

along to be signed. Enrico brought us generous portions of olives (£3.85) and focaccia all’aglio (£4) laced with garlic, tomato sauce and mozzarella to get us started followed by an aromatic glass of Nero d’Avola Conte Ferro Sicilia (175ml £6.50) for Shauna and a Nonnas Frizz (£4) mocktail for me. With mint, sugar, watermelon and topped up with lemonade, it had all the makings of a nonalcoholic mojito. Nonnas have recently launched a vegan menu, so I decided to give their antipasti of cous-cous al cavolfiore (£6.75) a go. This beautifully presented, punchy pickled cauliflower on a bed of cous-cous proved going vegan doesn’t have to mean sacrificing on flavour. Shauna had the polpo marinato (£7.95) – colourful, marinated octopus in a chilli, onion and crispy garlic medley, which she said was cooked to perfection. My main, risotto al funghi (£11.75) with wild mushrooms was delightfully creamy and tangy, and nicely complemented by earthy truffle oil, while Shauna was in raptures over her 8oz filetto (£30), pan-fried to medium rare and accompanied by wilted spinach and covered in port wine sauce. Too delicious to waste, she even took the leftovers home.

I finished with tiramisu (£6.50), with layers of espresso and marsala-soaked sponge and light and airy cream. It’s been on the menu since Nonnas opened in 1996, and features in the cook book. Though delicious, I couldn’t help but steal some of Shauna’s ananas caramellato (£7) with its warm pieces of pineapple covered in spiced rum and mixed with candied walnuts, ginger crumble and clotted cream. Whether you’re a vegan, vegetarian, pescetarian or meat-eater, there’s plenty of food to get passionate about at Nonnas – anytime of the day. EATING OUT

Excitement on the menu HANNAH SANDERS DISCOVERS THAT DINNER AT OWLERTON STADIUM COMES WITH A SIDE ORDER OF ADRENALINE AS THE DOGS RACE TO THE LINE. he lights were lowered and all eyes were on the track as the commentator announced: ‘the hare is on the move. ‘ We cheered as Slaneyside Ryder set the pace, our excitement building with every second, but disappointment kicked in when he didn’t take first place. Welcome to dining out, Owlerton-style. With a rhubarb and ginger gin (£6) and corona (£3.80) in hand along with a panoramic view of the arena, my partner and I were looking forward to a night at the dogs. We ordered from the popular restaurant package (£20) which is a three-course dinner, race card, tote runner and waiting service the perfect choice if you want a night out with a difference. There is a variety-filled menu which undergoes monthly changes – great if you like to revisit favourite restaurants without having the same thing twice - and the standards when it comes to quality of food and attentive service are reassuringly excellent. To start my partner had the Yorkshire puddings, served with an apple and sage gravy, which were crisp on the outside yet delightfully fluffy inside. I chose the chicken

T

96 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

liver pate with toasted raisin and walnut bread served with a plum and apple chutney. The fresh bread was still warm and when paired with the sweet chutney and smooth pate the dish was almost celestial. The break between courses was the perfect opportunity to place another bet, determined to end our losing streak, we placed our hopes on Axel Eight, keeping our fingers crossed as he picked up speed, but again he didn’t quite hit the mark, only taking second place. For mains I opted for the roasted chicken breast with lemon and thyme, smoked pancetta and drizzled with a pea and onion jus. The chicken was beautifully tender with a crisp skin, which provided the perfect contrast to the sweet and sharp jus. My partner’s chargrilled sirloin steak was cooked to medium-well perfection, but the star of the night was the stilton and peppercorn sauce which was rich and full of flavour. Both mains were served with a generous helping of fresh vegetables, and our sides of home cut chucky chips (£2.50) and garlic ciabatta (£2.50) were moreish. Following our feast, I opted for the apple and blackberry crumble which was served with indulgent vanilla custard. My partner

chose the delectable white chocolate and raspberry crème brulee - the charred top providing a subtle crunch, offsetting the sharp kick of the accompanying raspberries. On this visit to Owlerton, the odds were unfortunately in the bookies’ favour as our losing streak continued throughout our meal - despite this, we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. So, if you’re looking for a place to relax and enjoy a piece of the action there’s no better place than in Owlerton’s Panorama Restaurant. EATING OUT

One to remember THINK ALL INDIAN RESTAURANTS ARE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME? TRY PRITHIRAJ AND THINK AGAIN. BY RICHARD SMITH. ossibly the most memorable meal I ever ate consisted of cold curry served during a crocodile hunt in a remote Indian swamp, alive with some sort of air-breathing fish which hauled themselves out of the water and across the mud on their front fins. As we ate, we were approached through the shimmering heat haze by a tall man wearing only a loincloth and a turban. He had a piratical gold ring in his ear, a small monkey on his shoulder and a broad Brummie accent which, he explained, he had acquired in the Black Country where he’d worked in a car factory. The picnic was delicious, the company was intriguing and the crocodiles were camerashy. ‘Going for a curry’ has never quite seemed the same since. As far as I know, there are no amphibians on Ecclesall Road. It is, however, home to PrithiRaj, which has acquired a reputation as one of Sheffield’s leading curry establishments under the stewardship of owners Mizan Rahman and Subuj Miah, who’s also the head chef. PrithiRaj specialises in Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine – and with a menu a yard long, there’s something to tickle even the most jaded curry palate. But don’t be fooled,

P

this isn’t a generic curry house. Subuj is an expert and this is cooking that’s well above the level of your standard Indian. After warming up with the traditional poppadums (60p each) and pickle tray (£2.90), we started with two contrasting dishes presented in a similar fashion. Prawn Puree (£4.50) featured a delicate creamy, almond-y, coconut-y sauce served in a towering bowl of miraculously light pastry. The other starter, Lamb Chatt (£5), saw a velvety, carefully-spiced stew of meltingly tender lamb chunks nestling in another gravity-defying pastry case. Both were delicious. Choosing mains involved a certain amount of dithering on my part – would it be chicken? Lamb? Prawns? I compromised by having a dish (Sylheti Raj, £12.50) which contained all three, bathed in a sauce of subtle heat, with the flavours of fenugreek and caramelised onion to the fore and shards of grill-blackened chillies providing added zing. Across the table, Balti King Prawn Nawabi (£12.90) featured more meaty seafood and another fabulous sauce – smoky, earthy and almost barbeque-like in its depth of flavour. Cooking this good deserves to be enjoyed without too many distractions, so a simple

dish of fluffy pilau rice (£2.80) and a lovely, light, nan bread (£2.50) served to mop up the delicious juices. A couple of bottles of cold Kingfisher lager (330ml, £3/660ml, £5) washed the lot down and we finished with a complimentary slice of fresh orange each. I can’t think of an Indian meal I’ve enjoyed more. On the way out, we bumped into a friend who confided that he’d been going to PrithiRaj for years and he reckoned it was possibly the best Indian restaurant in the city. A big claim, but it was difficult to disagree. No crocodiles in sight, but certainly a memorable meal. PrithiRaj 407 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PG Tel: 0114 266 6002 www.prithirajrestaurant.com

A place in the sun A MUCH-LOVED DESTINATION FOR ALL LEVELS OF RIDER, MALLORCA NOW HAS A VERY SHEFFIELD CYCLING CONNECTION. angsett Cycles is one of the oldest cycle shops in the country, and recently they embarked on an exciting new venture in the sun with Mallorca Bike Hire. A family-run business established way back in 1890, Langsett Cycles has been an integral part of the cycling community in the Yorkshire/Derbyshire areas for years, but it’s now spreading its vast knowledge and professionalism to the beautiful island of Mallorca. Langsett Cycles really is a one-stop-shop for everything cycling. Their large landmark store on Infirmary Road houses all the latest road, mountain, city and children’s bikes with all the associated accessories and clothing to match. The workshop has been awarded the status of Shimano service centre and is fully equipped to carry out any repair by cytechtrained mechanics all at affordable prices. “After visiting Mallorca on a cycling holiday in my youth I instantly fell in love with the island and for years I’ve enjoyed running a popular cycling holiday from Langsett’s to the island. I always had the dream of having a home or a business there so with Mallorca Bike Hire I now have both. “Although hard work, I really am living the

L

dream and split my time between my business in Sheffield and Mallorca and look forward to coming home to Sheffield just as much as going back out to Mallorca, my son Alex however prefers the sun and runs business in Mallorca all year round,” said owner Andrew Elston. There’s a reason Mallorca is regarded as the greatest place on earth to cycle – quiet, high quality roads with challenging ascents and exhilarating descents, spectacular scenery with beautiful villages, cafes, and of course cake, it’s not too dissimilar to the Peak District. But with over 300 sunny days a year, maybe a bit warmer. As a result, Mallorca is the playground to most of the world’s greatest professional cycling teams including the all-conquering Team Sky, and Bradley Wiggins is often spotted as he has a home just around the corner from the store. Based in beautiful Puerto Pollensa in the north of the island, Mallorca Bike Hire offer the best quality carbon bikes and deliver them directly to your accommodation. Stocking bikes from top brands like Cannondale, Ridley and Orbea, each bike is prepared, serviced and set up to the customers own specification meaning you can

take the stress, worry and cost out of taking your own bike and hire one that’s set up just like your own. And they don’t just hire out first-class road bikes. They now have an extensive selection of e-bikes, city and children’s bikes, so the whole family can enjoy an active trip away in the sun. As the hire business in Mallorca is proving so popular, Andrew and his team are offering a bike hire service at Langsett Cycles. The latest electric e-bikes are a real game changer – particularly in a city with seven hills. Whether you’re a beginner or skilled cyclist, you can enjoy the breath-taking views of the city or Peak District on a high quality hire bike provided by a reputable company, and of course, there’s new models to purchase once you’re hooked. Veeno brings Sicilian dining with a difference to the Steel City Guests were invited to taste a variety of Veeno’s family-grown Sicilian wines along with Spuntini pairings – boards of meats, cheeses and other appetisers imported from individually-selected producers in Italy. Veeno co-founder, Nino Caruso, welcomed guests and explained the background to Veeno: when he and Andrea Zecchino, couldn’t find anywhere in Manchester to enjoy a really good glass of wine along with classic Italian Spuntini, they decided to set up a place of their own. Nino’s fellow co-founder, Andrea said: “We’re delighted to be bringing the Veeno experience to Sheffield. Veeno is all about bringing people together to relax over aperitivo – sharing some delicious nibbles and quality wines. “Ecclesall Road has so much to offer this fantastic city and we feel that Veeno will fit in seamlessly to its surroundings. We’re excited to give Sheffield the opportunity to sample the Veeno experience.”

GREEN DREAM HANNAH SANDERS MEETS A FAMILY REALISING THEIR AMBITION TO BUILD THE MOST ECO-FRIENDLY HOME IN SHEFFIELD. t’s the greenest house in Sheffield... and until now it has probably been one of the city’s best-kept secrets. Mention Pinegrove Country Club to most people and, if they remember it at all, they will recall a sports and social club in Stannington that had a few very successful years back in the 1980s and ‘90s. It faded from public consciousness after going out of business, falling into disrepair and being subject to a series of arson attacks. But this mouldering venue was the unlikely site chosen by local businessman Mike Haver to create a stunning, self-contained, ecofriendly family home.

I

The derelict Pinegrove Country Club

106 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

Mike runs a building maintenance company and his wife Meg is a consultant at the Northern General. Alongside Meg’s mother Dorothy they have combined to create a oneof-a-kind house with vision, passion and an eye for detail that truly makes it stand alone. “We wanted to create a home that was selfsustaining and energy-efficient, focusing on future-proofing. We are quite passionate about our impact on the environment. We wanted somewhere we could live our lives as green as possible,” said Meg. “The wonderful thing about Sheffield is that you have the fingers of green that feed into the city, which made it a great place for

the build.” Before settling on the former sports club, they considered other sites including Grenoside Primary School, The Old Chapel at Middlewood Hospital, Claremont House, Loxley and Brantwood School, Nether Edge but after much deliberation, feasibility studies and costing, finally settled on Pinegrove. “We hadn’t even considered Pinegrove until a chance drive past after visiting the Robin Hood pub in Little Matlock. The site caught our eye, so of course we went to investigate, and ideas just starting pouring out of us. But then the difficult task came of trying to find out who owned it,” said Mike.

FEATURE

“There was no for ‘sale sign’, just a derelict building. The company listed as owning it was no longer trading and the solicitors had been taken over by a larger firm, meaning we had our work cut out for us. It was our architect who suggested contacting the bank and, after bouncing from one person to the next, eventually a commercial land agent called us in regard to purchasing the site.” The area itself is a brownfield site in the greenbelt, consisting of 13 acres, eight of which is woodland along with 700m of riverbank along the river Loxley. “Before we demolished the site, we needed to safely remove a family of pipistrelle bats who had been roosting underneath the roof. “We had to get a license for doing this from Natural England, which we were granted, and then an ecologist came to catch the three bats. Once the house was built we had to put up bat boxes just in case, but they haven’t returned so have obviously found somewhere far nicer to roost.”

‘The fact that it was non-stop was what made it so challenging. Once you had finished one section, you were back on the laptop, planning and ordering materials for the next phase.’ Other problems were on a significantly larger scale and proved to be a test of both patience and ingenuity. The whole site consists of inert landfill, meaning the house had to be built on piles. In December 2012, when demolition began, the Havers family wanted to recycle as much of the old building as possible, so the material was later used to form a base layer. “After the foundations had been built, we then fitted two rainwater tanks underground which can store 20,000 litres of rainwater and be used for garden irrigation, flushing toilets and even the washing machine,” said Mike. The house is built on Passivhaus prinicples which means it meets a very high level of energy efficiency, minimising its carbon footprint and resulting in an ultra-low energy building. To meet this standard, it was important for them to make the house airtight and they achieved this by using a combination of Warmcell sustainable insulation, Pavatex woodfibre board and rigid PIR foam board. Mike taped all the joints so no air could escape, and fitted the house with a mechanical ventilation and heat recovery system to minimise smells and stale air without losing heat. “Throughout the build we wanted to utilise local products, so the timber frame was built by Oakworth in Handsworth, the stone is from Stanton Moor in Derbyshire and our floor is limestone sourced from the Peak District,” said Meg. By Christmas 2013, the house was watertight which meant that 6KW solar panels could be fitted to generate electricity. They also had a log boiler installed, which uses wood grown on the site to provide the Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 107

domestic hot water and underfloor heating. “Throughout the build, there were so many challenges we faced but for me, one of the hardest things was being so physically and mentally involved 24/7. The number of decisions involved is difficult, but fortunately for us we had a team of three to share the workload. It was great to see everything developing but it was hard living with all the elements that weren’t quite finished,” said Meg. “The fact that it was non-stop was what made it so challenging. Once you had finished one section, you were back on the laptop, planning and ordering materials for the next phase,” added Mike. But all the hard graft was worth it when the couple were able to finally move into a home that, as well as being the greenest in Sheffield, is also stunningly beautiful and truly unlike any other house in the city. The house has an open-plan kitchen, dining room and living room along with five bedrooms, a workshop, a pottery studio, a separate apartment, four bathrooms, two lounge areas and a reading corner overlooking the Loxley valley. They also have bees, vegetable gardens and an expansive greenhouse. The interior is just as breath-taking as the exterior, with pastel shades carefully chosen to coincide with the surrounding nature, and the unique pieces of furniture perfectly combining to create a contemporary and rustic feel. But of course, with a house on this scale the job is never totally finished. The Haver family has just been granted planning permission for a hydro-electric scheme on the near-by weir and they are hoping to start building it in 2019. This will take water from the top of the weir, run it through an Archimedes screw generator and create enough electricity to run the household. “If you came back in five to ten years we would hope that the area outside the walls would be more established as a renewable coppice woodland and we would have a traditional hedge along the roadside. We also would hope to have chickens and be much more self-sufficient when it comes to feeding

ourselves. I would hope we would be living as eco-friendly as possible,” said Mike. “When we were building, Kevin McCloud’s Grand Designs book was a lifeline. He explained that there are three elements to a build – the finish, cost and deadline and he doesn’t think you can deliver the same standard on all three. “You have to compromise and for us, although we spent more than we envisioned, the timescale was what we needed to be flexible on. We thought it would take three to five years and here we are six years down the line and still going,” adds Meg. “All of us are proud of the finishes we’ve achieved, being innovative and getting the features that we wanted. “We’ve achieved more than we could’ve ever imagined, and having such a large household with everything working proves that we have designed and built it correctly- it is a real sense of achievement, and it added to our enjoyment when we were able to host a large gathering of family this Christmas.”

BIRKDALE STUDENTS RISING TO CYBER SECURITY CHALLENGE

Saxton Mee extends support for St Luke’s Hospice Supporting St Luke’s Hospice is as safe as houses for clients of Sheffield estate agency Saxton Mee. The company, which has eight offices spread over Sheffield, Hope Valley and Derbyshire, has extended its hugely popular scheme of donating its sales fee, less expenses, to Sheffield’s only hospice from properties sold through them by St Luke’s supporters. This means, for example, that a house sold at £200,000 through Saxton Mee would mean a donation of almost £2,000 to St Luke’s. Saxton Mee director Linda Crapper said: “My friend’s mum died at St Luke’s and they looked after her so well that that I felt we had to do something to support the charity. “So many people’s lives are touched by St Luke’s and this seemed like the most positive way that we, as a company, could give something back to them. “The campaign has proved so successful that is seemed an obvious choice to continue and maintain this excellent partnership with one of Sheffield’s best loved and most deserving charities.” St Luke’s senior corporate fundraising manager Joasia Lesniak commented: “This is a fantastic partnership for the hospice and we are delighted that Saxton Mee has decided to continue with the scheme. “We need to raise at least £6.3million every year to maintain our excellent levels of service for all the people of Sheffield so this level of support from Saxton Mee really will have a major impact.”

We hear about cyber security in the news on a regular basis and members of Birkdale School’s Code Club, run by the Computing department, have been participating in the recent cyber security challenge “Capture the Flag”. This is run by students from Sheffield Hallam University and involved challenges testing cryptography, secure coding and online security. Merlin Hancock (Year 8) was presented with a medal for best overall score. This was an outstanding achievement as the challenge is actually aimed at much older students. Alex Pilakoutas (Year 10) also received a prize and certificate.

Wartime spirit comes to Westbourne School It was a case of ‘keep calm and carry’ on as Year Four pupils at Sheffield’s Westbourne School stepped back in time to discover a world of wartime hardship. Dressed in period costume, children from the Broomhill independent school found out what it was like for families of the 1940s to go through evacuation, experience an air raid warning and live with food rationing. And on a lighter note, they also found time to learn classic wartime morale boosting song Run, Rabbit Run.

The wait is over The Ferrari that everybody has been waiting for: say ‘ciao’ to the Ferrari 488 Pista. Why is this the car people have been waiting for? Simple – how it looks and how it drives. The previous generations to this car, the 360 Challenge Stradale, 430 Scuderia and 458 Speciale, were all absolutely fantastic to drive and this new 488 Pista, should be the most ballistic model variant yet. Compared to the 488 GTB, the new model weighs an impressive 90kg less (1280kg dry). Combine this with a horsepower figure of 710hp, increased torque and 20 per cent more downforce, and you’ll have a car which it as comfortable tearing up the Silverstone F1 circuit as it is trundling through Sheffield city centre.
