PROMOTION

Family lawyer is ‘Vouched For’ by Times & Telegraph M

ichelle Cooper, one of the region’s noted and award winning family solicitors is celebrating not only the launch of the first family law firm in Sheffield, she is also celebrating her recent achievement after being named in the Vouched For list, published by the Sunday Telegraph & The Times, as one of the top 50 lawyers in the UK. This prestigious list is all about client recommendation. Clients have to score solicitors on all aspects of how their case has been dealt with and each client has to be individually verified by the scheme to ensure that they are genuine. In the recent survey in conjunction with The Sunday Telegraph, Michelle Cooper was one of only a handful of lawyers in the region to be recognised. The comments and scores she received were exceptional and she has a five-star rating. Michelle comments: “I am proud to have launched the first family law firm in Sheffield, dealing with divorce, separation, finances and children disputes. “It has been something I have wanted to do for a long time, as I believe a firm that concentrates solely on family law, is able to tailor and stream line its service to each individual client in a cost effective way, so clients are getting an expert and individual service at a very competitive price. “A lot of my work is through recommendations of both former clients and other business professionals, so I was aware that, hopefully, I was meeting and indeed exceeding clients expectations. However, I was extremely surprised and delighted to see the reviews from clients on Vouched For. “I do not intend to rest on those laurels. The reason I have started my own firm is to give clients an outstanding service.

Leading solicitor celebrates place in national top 50 list plus launch of Sheffield’s first family law firm. “We are constantly reviewing the services we offer, and how we can deliver that service and meet clients’ needs in more innovative ways.” “Everyone likes something for free and we offer a range of free initial advice services including a first free interview at which we give client advice on the full range of options and prices. We also offer a telephone helpline and web question and answer page.” “We come up with an individual plan to assist clients on the most costeffective way, such as fixed fee and payas-you-go. “I believe passionately that one size does not fit all. I have a range of clients from all walks of life. “Getting specialist advice at the right time does undoubtedly save costs in the long run and many clients comment how much better they feel when they have seen me and know what their options are.”’

Just like wood

If you want the look of traditional timber windows without the hefty price tag, talk to Windowspec.

I

f you’re a proud homeowner who takes great care in the appearance of your house, then you’ll know that the look of the exterior is just as important as the interior. Windows are a focal point of any building and, while timber windows are a popular choice because of the authentic finish, as always, luxury comes with a hefty price tag. Fortunately, for those looking for affordable style, there is a product that has been designed to replicate the popular 19th century flush timber sash window. Residence 9 is designed by craftsmen and is manufactured from modern composite materials. Andy Holmes, owner of local window fitting company Windowspec, says he was massively impressed when he discovered the brand. “I always try to provide my customers with what they want and many of them were requesting timber windows but were put off

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

by the price. Residence 9 is a really good quality product and it has saved some of my clients a fortune.” The windows are extruded into strong, thermally efficient shapes and finished in a choice of authentic woodgrain textures and colours – no sanding and painting is necessary. But what really sets Residence 9 apart is frame design – the thickness and

strength of these frames are superior to many others on the market. Fitting such a design requires finesse and attention and can only be executed by individuals who are masters of their trade. Every Residence 9 window is specially made to your requirements – you can customise everything including the style, colour and hardware. Andy, who has worked in the industry for 25 years, says: “The system can even be used in conservation areas because of its authentic appearance and is suitable for any homeowner who wants a top-end luxury window brand.” Windowspec covers any area from Sheffield to Stockport and most customers come through recommendation. As well as fitting windows, Andy offers repairs, gutters, doors, porches and rooflines and he is FENSA registered, so you know you’re in safe hands. oilers are like cars. If they are regularly serviced and properly taken care of, they will last for years to come. And like cars, manufacturers are looking at new ways of fuelling boilers to ensure they are much more environmentally friendly. Home Team in Crookes not only repair and install quality boilers, they are also on a mission to educate homeowners on how to save money on their energy bills and ultimately, how to help save the planet. Although they are dedicated to delivering an excellent service to customers in Sheffield, Home Team also covers Doncaster, Wakefield, Chesterfield, Mansfield, Glossop and beyond. heating. Home Team provides a number of heating options for its clients and they are qualified installers of high quality boilers from brands such as Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Ideal and ATAG. “Our call centre is open 24/7 to give our clients reliable, expert advice and to show them ways to save on bills with our energy-smart, holistic approach,” says Russell. “We choose the right boiler for each house. If you have a well maintained heating installation, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t last for up to 25 years.” Although a good quality boiler is a one-off purchase, Russell and his team are committed to staying with you every step of the way by providing regular boiler servicing. They also do plumbing repairs and are distributors for the Utility Warehouse. Home Team always go the extra mile for customers and will come out to do emergency plumbing all year round. “One of our clients called us about an unrelated pipe leak on Christmas day, so we sent out a plumber straight away,” says Russell. They have a range of renewable technology and state-of-the-art options including solar PV panels and air source heat pumps, which are three to four times more efficient than standard boilers. Alternatively, their gas combi boilers are fuel efficient, highly reliable and can reduce your bills by up to 40 per cent. Not sure whether you need a new boiler? quality for a business to have, combined with a thorough knowledge of the industry. Helen Cunningham has been a valued member of the customer service team since the beginning, demonstrating that Russell takes good care of his staff, as well as his customers. Russell has a background in property development and started out by refurbishing houses. Dissatisfied by unreliable sub-contractors, he decided to build his own in-house team. This led to Home Team being set up as part of Russell’s existing business, Property Partners in 2002. Home Team was branded and opened as a company in its own right in 2012. Russell’s 16 years of property experience, along with his business partner Darren Aspen’s 20 years of Gas Safe expertise, has helped the business go from strength to strength. Although Home Team is proud to be Sheffield’s plumbing, heating and boiler representatives, Russell has high hopes for the future and is keen to expand the Home Team’s UK presence. “We are looking at our growth over the next few months. Our aim is to become a national business, proudly advocating Sheffield as its home,” says Russell. “This will be supported by our new website that will have loads of useful information, answer many of your questions and will be easy to access via a computer or smartphone.” So, if you’re looking for an eco-friendly, high-quality boiler and a reliable team with specialist expertise, look no further than Home Team. Check your shades, say Martyn Kemp Opticians Expert optometrists at Martyn Kemp Opticians (MKO) are highlighting the importance of checking that sunglasses are protecting eyes effectively against the sun and ultra violet (UV). Too much sunlight and UV can cause cataracts and macular degeneration, as well as sore gritty eyes. Sunglasses must block out UV completely to protect eyes. Martyn Kemp, chairman of the company, said: “Wearing sunglasses that don’t block out UV is actually worse for the eyes than no sun specs at all. Some tinted sunglasses only block out light, making pupils larger and allowing more harmful UV to reach the back of the eyes. “Sunglasses can be checked to ensure that they are doing what they are supposed to do.”

The checks can be carried out at MKO’s head office on Herries Road in Sheffield, and there is no charge for MKO patients. At Ski Optical Works in Banner Cross, there is a free machine that shows exactly how much UV your sunglasses are blocking out. Where there is a deficiency, a special blocker may be applied for a charge of £10. MKO, one of the largest firms of independent opticians in South Yorkshire, is running a special offer for the whole summer. A complete pair of designer sunspecs can be purchased for only £69 or a pair of prescription sunspecs from the other ranges comes free when ordered as a second pair. For further information, call the Herries Road practice on 0114 232 5503 or Ski Optical Works on 0114 2671123.

YouTube starlet records original track to help fund life-saving medical equipment A teen vlogger and singer has written, recorded and released a single to help raise funds for The Children's Hospital in Sheffield. Pippa Crossland, 14, was so moved after hearing about the charity that she decided to do something to help. The youngster, from Crosspool, set about writing her song with the help of songwriter and producer John Sephton. Pippa, who has had thousands of views on her YouTube channel, said: "I am the same age as lots of the children that go to the hospital, so I wanted to do something to help. I am lucky that I have never had to have any serious treatment there, but I know many children aren't so fortunate." The song, called Shining Light, is about a young couple who fall in love, but one of them then falls ill. “It is open-ended, so we

don't know what happens to them" said Pippa. "I wanted it to be hopeful but also make people think." The song's producer, John Sephton of Old Pig Farm in Oughtibridge, donated studio time for Pippa to record her song. Help also came from Studio Orchestra Strings, who added a string arrangement, enabling the song to develop from a simple idea of Pippa's into a powerful pop ballad. Money by the song will help the charity continue its work to fund improvements to the hospital that are over and above the standard NHS provision. They fund life-saving medical equipment and improvements to the facilities as well as research into the prevention and cure of childhood illnesses. The song is now available to buy from iTunes and other digital stores.

Delight as S. Anselm’s wins permission for new pitch Children and staff at S. Anselm’s Prep School in Bakewell have been given permission to add an AstroTurf pitch to their extensive sports facilities. The new state-of-the-art, floodlit pitch will include 12 new tennis courts, a full-sized hockey pitch and three five-a-side football pitches, offering school children and the local community the opportunity to train on Astroturf. Project leader Richard Tarbatt said: “This has been an on-going project for the school and will enable the pupils here, and local residents, the opportunity to train on the same facilities as are available nationwide. We are grateful to the Peak District National Park for seizing the chance to give Bakewell state-ofthe-art sports training facilities. Pupils from the age of three right through to 16 will see huge benefits from being able to play a range of sports on this new artificial surface. It’s fantastic news for the school, Bakewell and the local community.”

Accountants seek charities to support Nursery hands over charity cheque

Staff and children at the Old School House Nursery were delighted to present a cheque for £3,012 to Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. Principal Stephanie Connelly is very proud of all the children, parents and staff at both the nurseries (Crosspool and Endcliffe) who have been involved in the fundraising events, which have included numerous bake sales and fancy dress events at Halloween and World Book Day, to name but a few. The latest donation brings the total raised by the nursery for the charity to £5,228.15.

WS Bakewell Show

With Bakewell Show promising to be bigger and better than ever before, Westside previews this year’s fun-filled celebration of all things rural.

IT’S SHOW TIME!

E

xciting changes are taking place at Bakewell Show – this year on August 5 and 6 with a dedicated equestrian day on August 4 – as organisers work hard to keep it fresh and relevant in its 185th year. A new website has been launched to make it quicker and easier for people to enter different classes, buy tickets and find out about attractions. It can be found at www.bakewellshow.org. And the Wye Valley showground has been revamped to make it easier for visitors to get around. Following the merger of members and patrons of the show last year, entertainment facilities have been switched to the other side of the centre ring where the new marquee will serve not only traditional hot meals and afternoon teas, but also lighter bites for those

WESTSIDE 50

not wanting full catering. The freed-up space will make room for more trade stands, food courts and seating for the general public. The public grandstand will also swap sides.

Tickets Pre-show tickets are (adults) £15.50 (seniors) £13.50 with on the gate prices (adults) £16.50 (seniors) £14.50. Children under 16 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. There is a nominal charge of £5 for visitors to the equestrian day on August 4.

The village green will be bigger and for the first time the show will have its own farmers' market selling a selection of artisan bread, eggs, fruit, vegetables etc from local producers some of whom currently trade at the farmers' markets held regularly in the town. The centre ring attraction is the exciting Knights of the Damned team this year celebrating its 10th anniversary. With spectacular displays of bravery as well as jousting, the display has proved a great success at past shows. And it's something of a homecoming for the man behind the knights, Justin Pearson, who used to take part in the mounted games at Bakewell Show. Of course there are also the regular attractions – including champion animals, mammoth vegetables, vintage vehicles, specialist food and the everpopular beach experience.

Reasons to be cheerful Brian Wilson is a happy man – not only is he attending his first Bakewell Show, he’s also promoting the miniature garden competition.

B

rian Wilson has never been to Bakewell Show, but he has a very good reason to go this year; he’s dipped his toe in the water of sponsorship, and already he is seeing the rewards of his business, Brook Garden Centre, promoting the new miniature garden competition. But it’s more than that. Brian believes that his ethos in creating somewhere families can go and have fun fits in very nicely with the ethos of Bakewell Show, so everyone is a winner. Family is very important to Brian – his wife Julie works in the business, his son Jacob has just started working there and his other son Bradley, currently studying law at Durham University, will be doing project work for the garden centre during his holidays. Heidi, the youngest family member, has also done two weeks’ work experience there. Then there are the numerous relatives, not to mention the wider ‘family’, who have stuck with him through thick and thin. And there have been some horrendous ‘thicks and thins’.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

His parents Barbara and Terry built the garden centre in 2000 and had just invested half a million pounds in its development when in 2007 there was a dreadful flood which decimated the business to the point where it almost closed. The memory is still very raw with Brian: “We’d just finished all the new buildings on the Saturday, by the Monday it had all gone. They were very hard times. My parents were very disillusioned and there was no-one to help us. But you have to fight back to survive and keep strong to carry your dreams. It’s quite easy when you have lost your way to just get up and walk away, but I could never do that.” The family lived in a hotel for a month then moved back on site and lived in a caravan for 18 months as a security precaution. Gradually the business was put back together. When Barbara and Terry retired 18 months ago, Brian took over and has been ‘carrying his dreams’ ever since. It was an opportunity to redevelop the business and rebrand it as Brook Garden Centre. News that a new multi-million pound leisure park

was to be developed at Unstone less than a mile away gave fuel to those dreams. “It is so good for Chesterfield and the Peak District and the communities all round. It’s going to bring visitors into the area. We want to become a destination, we want people to know who we are and supporting Bakewell Show gives us that opportunity. We want to support small businesses and they, in turn, will support us. The miniature garden competition ties in very well with what we are doing here.” Entrants are invited to bring their miniature gardens to the garden centre on 1 August when Brian has organised a family fun day with balloon sculptors, a bouncy castle, food tasting and animal petting among other things. It will be an opportunity to show off the tremendous strides he has already made in taking the business forward. “I shall be at Bakewell Show – I have never been able to go before because I’ve been too busy working, but not this year. We shall have a stand and I plan to bring along an aquatic tank and some small animals for the children to pet if they want to. “I am really excited.”

Something for the kids In recent years, children have become an increasingly important part of Bakewell Show. We look at what’s in store for the little ones this year.

B

akewell Show organisers are playing the generation game this year with a packed programme for children. They hope this will plant a seed and grow into a passion for the event which their parents and grandparents have shared over the years.

WESTSIDE 52

Scrapping the entrance fee for children under 16 several years ago has seen an increase in the number of families attending the show and it is hoped that putting on more things that appeal to them will establish a ‘must-go-to-Bakewell Show’ loyalty. After the success of last year’s ‘Show us

yer sheep...’ competition in conjunction with Peak FM, which saw the showground inundated with model sheep, they have launched a competition to find the best miniature garden. It’s being sponsored by the Brook Garden Centre in Chesterfield which will host the judging at a special Peak FM fun day on 1 August.

The three categories – for schools, families and individuals – are all aimed at encouraging youngsters to appreciate natural things and get creative. All they have to do is make a garden in a seed tray or similar-sized box and take it along to the garden centre for judging. There are no special rules and the only limit is imagination. The best three gardens will win great prizes – the schools a piece of technology and the families and individuals a family VIP ticket to the show and £100 worth of vouchers from the garden centre – and their entries will take pride of place in the Horticulture Marquee at the show. Meanwhile in the food and farming marquee there will be a special kids zone where the crazy cupcake challenge will take place. Working on the premise that all kids love cakes, the competition aims to teach children about the link between growing food and eating it. It’s a fun way of showing them that the wheat that grows in the fields and dairy products like eggs, butter and milk are all components in the food that they eat. As well as being educational and creative, the challenge will raise money too with the proceeds going to charity. Organisers are planning to take pictures of the cakes before the children eat them, put the pictures on the show website and get people to vote for the best. The winner will get tickets to next year’s show. The young consumers choice class in the cheese competition has been a stalwart in food and farming for several years with two local youngsters picking the class winner: “This year we have got a local school involved to find two young judges,” says Jill Gratton from the food and farming committee. “Pupils from Taddington and Priestcliffe C of E school ran a poster competition and we chose the winners.” Helped by a cheese specialist, the two young judges – 11-year-old Benjamin Gratton and Elizabeth Orton (eight) – will decide which they like best from a wide variation of cheeses. As well as being fun for the youngsters, the class has a practical benefit too – it gives cheese producers an idea of what appeals to the younger generation, enabling them to come up with flavours that children actually like. But Bakewell Show is not all about food and creativity – there’s lots more fun to be had for kids of all ages. Who would have thought that Bakewell Show beach would have proved such a hit? Tons of play sand is imported onto the showground and children can play happily under the shelter of a large striped marquee while the grown-ups veg

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

Make a choice... Children from two local schools have been invited to help judge the Young Consumers Class in the cheese competition, a good indicator to producers of young tastes

out on one of the conveniently-sited deck chairs. There are buckets and spades, Punch and Judy and donkey rides...who needs the seaside? The Anglers’ Rest, by the side of the River Wye, offers another opportunity – to show that fly fishing isn’t just for the older generation. Steward Alistair Duncan is delighted to demonstrate the art to children and then let them have a go – and quite often they are better than the adults. And having a go is what the companion dog show is all about. Raising money for Ashbourne Animal Welfare, this class is for both pedigree and non-pedigree pets and certainly for the novelty classes the name of the game is ‘cuteness’. Among other things, youngsters can vie for having the prettiest bitch, handsomest dog, the dog with the waggiest tail and the one that can do the best trick. There are classes for young people handling calves and goats – all with decent prize money – and juvenile classes in the pigeon and poultry and rabbits sections. And what is nice about these classes is the fact that the ‘old stagers’ who have entered at Bakewell Show for years are only too delighted to give help and advice to the ‘new kids on the block’. The scarecrow competition is one of the most popular on the showground with kids showing great imagination – which they can also do in floral art. Organisers have clearly been listening to some young person with their classes for edible monsters made from natural plant material and one titled ‘explosion’. The WI wants entries for

Beatles’ themed classes – a yellow submarine made from recycled material and a design for a Beatles’ song CD cover. Over in the horticulture marquee, youngsters can try their hands at planting a shoe, decorating a sunhat or making an edible necklace as well as other activities. And then there is Madam Zucchini – the mistress of vegetable education. This flamboyant lady takes as slightly eccentric approach to helping children like vegetables with theatre performances and workshops. All of this put together, with a funfair and the children’s area – not to mention the opportunity to build a dry stone wall – make it a perfect day out for the children. “I know it’s hackneyed, but children are our future,” says show manager Janet Bailey. “If we want them to come to the show and have a good time we must put on things they would like to do and hopefully we have done that.”

WS Bakewell Show The familiar figure on the show office balcony – complete with legendary pipe – will be absent this year

Happy retirement

Bakewell maybe in Richard Morten’s blood, but after a lifetime association with the show, he’s decided to call it a day.

B

akewell Show won’t be quite the same for Richard Morten this year. No problems to sort out, no VIPs to look after, no radio and television interviews – in fact this year no responsibility for the show at all. For after 25 years as joint director, along with Brian Bakel – and almost a lifetime of association with the show – Richard has retired and he will be taking it easy. Ill health has been a major factor; his bad back, brought on by years of farming, saw him miss the show one year and then reach the sad, but right, decision to quit at this year’s annual meeting.

WESTSIDE 54

The son of show stalwart Donald Morten, Richard used to help as a small boy when his father was shorthorn cattle steward. He worked on the committee in 1964 when local Young Farmers’ Clubs staged a cavalcade showing farming through the ages and became a fully-fledged member when he was 24 or 25. He hasn’t stopped working for Bakewell Show since. He was a cattle steward for many years and later in charge of the centre ring with the responsibility of making sure that everything ran to time. “And I’ve enjoyed every minute,” he says. “There have been ups and downs as there are in everything you do, but I have loved it.”

Farming is in the Morten blood. Richard’s great grandfather Richard Bonsall Morten bought the family home Cowdale Hall in 1896 and ran a successful dairy farm. He later added two neighbouring farms – Highcliffe and Green Farm – and also ran a dairy in Buxton selling milk all round the town. Richard’s parents moved into Cowdale Hall when they got married and he was born there. He and his wife Mary – who was last year’s president – still live in the confines of the farm, but they downsized several years ago and now call one of the converted farm buildings their home. Changing times mean that Cowdale Hall

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

054 - 055 WSide Aug15_Layout 1 08/07/2015 14:42 Page 2

is not the dairy farm it once was. The stable block has been turned into beautiful holiday cottages, there is a caravan park and they offer livery. In his tenure as joint director, Richard has overseen phenomenal changes with both the show and the showground, not least the construction of the Agricultural Business Centre and modern cattle market – as with many projects the deadline to finish kept moving and came perilously close to the date of the show. The new building, with its white canopies said to reflect the marquees at the show, meant a complete re-think: “It was a huge change because we had to re-jig the showground for a start, and the building didn’t come without its problems. But all-inall I think it’s a very good job they are doing and they are helping local farmers in a good way. Without it, Bakewell would have died.” The new show offices to replace the old wooden ‘chicken shed’ posed another challenge and Richard and Brian spent many hours working with planners to finalise the impressive building it is today. It was a proud day for everyone when the building was officially opened. It had been built without saddling future generations with a huge debt: “We ummed and ahhed but we couldn’t have carried on in the old building – thankfully we managed to pay for it without having to borrow money,” says Richard. “And I think it’s really lovely – and blends so well with the cattle market.” Looking back, Richard has two particular

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

“I didn’t want to leave people in the lurch. It’s like the saying about plunging your hand into a bucket of water – when you take it out it doesn’t leave a hole.” highlights – when he was president in 1993 and when Mary became president last year: “It was a fantastic thing and such an honour. You represent the show at all the other shows and go to events like the harvest festival at Derby Cathedral and to the Lord Lieutenant’s reception.” And Mary’s year, when he acted as consort, was a happy reminder. Richard could have had another reminder of his year in office but for the quick actions of one of the visitors. It had previously rained very hard and the ground was very muddy – “The trouble with organising a show anywhere is that you are a hostage to the weather” – and somehow the large badge hanging from the ceremonial president’s chain managed to fall off. Fortunately someone spotted it and ran up and returned it, or Richard could have been forever known as the president who lost the jewel!

Struggling with his back over the last couple of years meant his decision to retire was not difficult: “I have never been one to let other people do all the work,” he says. “It was a practical decision, I didn’t want to leave people in the lurch. It’s like the saying about plunging your hand into a bucket of water – when you take it out it doesn’t leave a hole. “Bakewell Show is not about one or two people, it’s about everybody – without everyone helping there would be no show and I feel very strongly about that. I am confident that it will survive because of its faithful supporters and because we have always tried to involve both the town and the country. Farming has evolved, it’s not the same, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s just different. “And there is a core of people involved who won’t let it fail. It’s a team effort and will always be a team effort.Yes, we need to attract young people who share a passion for farming, but there are new developments at the show which get a good response and that means they are working.” Even though Richard has retired, Mary is still involved with the Food and Farming Committee and daughter Tricia is trade stand steward. The next generation has played a part too, with granddaughter Toni helping out in the show office, although whether their two grandsons will volunteer in the future is unsure. But one thing is sure... the Morten name, so well-respected over the years, will still feature at Bakewell Show.

Floral tribute

Expert flower arranger Jonathan Moseley will be demonstrating his lifelong passion at this year’s Bakewell Show.

T

here can’t be many 11-year-old boys who ask for a greenhouse for their birthday; but Jonathan Moseley did, for even at that tender age it was obvious that he was never going to be a stereotype. And he’s not changed in the intervening years. Now an internationally renowned freelance floral designer, he’s demonstrated all over the world, and he’s definitely NOT the stereotypical flower arranger. Jonathan, who lives near Dronfield, is a young man with a genuine passion for flowers and the beauty of creativity, which he wants to share with everybody from children as young as he was to people in their eighties. And not just women, who are traditionally associated with floral art. He’s run company team building courses where grown men have told him how they have been so relaxed that they had forgotten about everything while they were creating. Jonathan’s passion began when he was a small boy: “I can’t remember exactly when, but there was never a time when I was not involved with plants and growing,” he says. His granddad was a very keen gardener who took the lad under his wing, gave him a plot of his own and encouraged him to grow traditional varieties like African marigolds, blue lobelia and antirrhinums. Granddad was also a chrysanthemum specialist and Jonathan spent many an hour helping him remove earwigs and bag the heads of his prize blooms. Granddad also taught him the tricks of the trade, how to identify different plants, propagate seeds and take cuttings – sometimes from other people’s gardens. When he finally got his own greenhouse, Jonathan ran it like a market garden; he used to grow plants and sell them to friends and his father’s workmates – he even produced his own catalogue. The lessons from granddad had obviously taken root because he was so successful that he saved enough money from his business to buy his first car. And the exercise taught him another valuable lesson – that plants and flowers could earn good money. As a youngster, Jonathan entered the flowers he’d grown in all the local shows but found himself drawn to the flower arrangements: “I’ve always been fascinated by the creative element – creating a transitory art form with beautiful flowers,” he says. “So I

WESTSIDE 56

decided to have a go at flower arranging myself. “The first time I entered was at Harthill and I can still remember the anticipation of it all, making the arrangement and then having to walk away and feeling physically sick during the judging. I made my granddad drive me up there and wait outside for the result.” That first effort, a ruby wedding arrangement in a cherub vase, earned him third prize – he was just 12. Two years later he had won Challenge Trophies at most of the local shows. The talented 14-year-old must have proved a challenge to the group of seasoned, much older and more experienced fellow competitors, but most of them were supportive and his parents and grandparents were always there for him. It’s one thing having a hobby, albeit a highly-successful one, but quite another choosing to make it a career. So Jonathan decided to ‘do the sensible thing’ and go to Nottingham University. However, upon leaving, he was attracted once again by the world of plants and flowers. After leaving university, a friend had spotted a job in the local garden centre and suggested that, until he worked out what he really wanted to do with his life, he might as well apply for it. Working at the garden centre shaped his future. He stayed for four or five years during which time he learned his trade gaining different qualifications and building up his reputation. He started doing demonstrations on Sundays showing customers how to plant tubs and other gardening techniques, and later encouraged the garden centre to stock fresh flowers. That led to him running flower arranging classes after hours in the coffee shop two nights a week. They proved extremely popular with up to 30 ladies attending each session. Gradually he reduced his hours at the garden centre and worked on running his own business. In the early days he started working for various flower wholesalers and high-profile florist shops around the country and, as more people became aware of this talented young man, he found himself very much in demand to do demonstrations at all the premier shows. Now he’s one of the RHS’s top designers, demonstrating at prestigious venues from

Chelsea and Tatton Park to Hampton Court: “That’s my favourite because it combines my love of history with my love of flowers – that’s why I love demonstrating at Chatsworth too.” But while he likes the grand stage with audiences of 1,000 of more and putting on a flamboyant theatrical performance, Jonathan is still very grounded and is keen to help people to understand that they too can create simple beautiful arrangements: “It’s not just something that grandmas do,” he says, “it’s for everybody. And I think one of the reasons I have had success is because I am adaptable and can change with the trends. Flower arranging needs to be current and keep up with fashion. I want people to look and think ‘I can do this, I want to find out more.’” Jonathan’s flower school in Derbyshire attracts students from all corners of the UK and abroad who are eager to learn Jonathan’s sought after floral skills and unique style. His life sees him jet-setting to Europe and beyond and mixing with celebrities – he’s currently mentoring Blue Peter’s Skinny Jean Gardeners Dale and Lee Connolly who are growing the bouquet for Dale’s up-andcoming wedding and he was the floral judge on BBC TV’s Big Allotment Challenge. Jonathan has represented the UK on the world stage and recently designed the fantastic flowers in Sheffield Cathedral for the visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. But Jonathan still finds time for his local community, whether it is running classes in local village halls or doing fundraising charity demonstrations like the one which raised over £2,300 for Chesterfield RSPCA. And he’s coming to Bakewell Show – catch him for an exclusive show-organised demonstration in Bakewell Town Hall on Monday 3 August which will follow the theme “Grow, Cut, Arrange”. And on show days he will present a series of demonstrations in the horticultural marquee where visitors will be encouraged to get hands-on. He loves shows like Bakewell and hopes they will continue for many years to come, after all as he says: “It’s what put me on this path in the first place.” Join Jonathan for live #flowertalk every Friday night on Twitter 7.30-8.30pm or to find out further information visit www.jonathan-moseley.com

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £20m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child’s GCSE grades are predicted 10 Grade A star GCSE’s worth up to 100% of the fees 9 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 90% of the fees 8 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 75% of the fees 7 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 60% of the fees

FIRST TERM FREE Day or Boarding Worth up to £9,795 Continues for 2014-15 (a) First Term Free for Years N1 to 6 inclusive, or (b) 50% off First Term’s Fees for Years 7, 8, 9, 10. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). FAMILY SIBLING AWARDS Day & Boarding Our discounts are bigger than others, if indeed they even offer them. Brothers & sisters - boarders from 12% - 20%, day pupils 10%.

Exciting partnership

T

he Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) has agreed a partnership with one of the country’s leading independent schools, Queen Ethelburga’s in

York. The exciting partnership will see both institutions develop a number of initiatives, including a joint cricket academy for talented and committed players aged 16-19 and Queen Ethelburga’s Cricket Academy Programme, which will aim to maximise the development of players from the ages of 11 to 16, with academy under 12s and under 14s playing district and county matches. Both programmes are supported by YCCC, which develops cricketing potential while allowing students to access an outstanding academic education. Yorkshire’s director of cricket Martyn Moxon says: “It is very exciting that we are able to develop our successful academy under the auspices of the region’s leading independent school for sport in Queen Ethelburga’s. “The fundamental goal of the Yorkshire Cricket Academy Programme recognises that

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

players develop at different ages. To achieve this, a detailed coaching and playing programme has been developed with the school, to provide everything that is required from a cricketing point of view. Added to that, students will have the advantage of receiving a full-time independent school education at one of the highest-performing establishments in the country.” Former Yorkshire cricketer and Queen Ethelburga’s director of cricket Ishy Dawood says this is an amazing opportunity for young cricketers to get top-level coaching as well as an outstanding academic education. “The programme is a brilliant chance for Queen Ethelburga’s to work with Yorkshire County Cricket Club to help develop the potential of young players. “Academy students will need to be passionate about the sport and have the drive and commitment to play and train at the very highest levels. It will also be a fantastic chance for pupils to learn in an excellent academic establishment. “Queen Ethelburga’s has been ranked as one of the top independent schools in the country and our cricket staff will work very

closely with our teachers to make sure players achieve highly both in the classroom and on the field. If you want to play cricket at the top level in the region and learn in a firstrate school, then our academy could be the answer.” The elite tier players will represent the school in the national T20 competition against the strongest school sides in the country. Under the guidance of YCCC, players will have the chance to play for the county in the English and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Yorkshire premier league on a Saturday afternoon and play further competitive fixtures for Queen Ethelburga’s against county cricket academies, universities and county-age group teams on Sundays. Students will be given bespoke training programmes including access to a full-time strength and conditioning coach and access to physiotherapy treatment and sports massages. Teeing off in Tenerife An inviting climate and stunning courses make the largest of the Canary islands an ideal year-round destination for golfers. Words: John Murphy

T

raditionally Tenerife has been the first choice as a winter sun destination, offering the prospect of heat, fine beaches and a break from bleak British weather. That perception is now changing with the realisation that the island, the largest of the Canaries, offers attractions as an all-year-round destination. The principal among these is the climate – temperatures average 22 degrees centigrade and 27 degrees is rarely exceeded. There is no variation in temperature between summer and winter months and it is increasingly seen as a better alternative to traditional summer destinations such as Spain and Portugal where temperatures can be oppressive in the summer months. The tourist industry is helping to encourage this influx of new visitors in the summer by offering attractive rates for hotels and for playing golf on the eight courses on the island. The mild but warm climate in the summer makes golf a pleasure in Tenerife and golf parties or couples would be well advised to consider the island as the ideal destination. Tenerife is just over four hours’ flight time away (Monarch fly from a number of UK airports) and one of the courses closest to the airport is Golf Las Americas. The verdant 18-hole course is formed from a natural amphitheatre of land with stunning views over the Atlantic and the island of La Gomera, home to the Canaries’ ninth golf course El Tecina. The par 72 was designed by John Jacobs and is a perfect example of a really good resort course. The fairways are enticingly

WESTSIDE 88

wide as they snake around lines of pine and palm trees and the greens, with some

Golf Las Americas

undulations, are fair and true. The Bermuda grass on the fairways means that clean ball striking is the order of the day. It is not unduly long and some of the shorter par fours and fives offer the average club golfer the chance of that rare commodity: a birdie. A review would be incomplete without mention of the wonderful clubhouse with balconies overlooking the course and its exotic flowers and fauna. The quality of food and service is excellent as would be anticipated with it being part of the five-star Hotel Las Madrigueras resort. Many of the luxurious and spacious bedrooms, the terraces, the restaurant and the swimming pool overlook the course and it is ideally situated being close to both Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas. As is the case with many golfing destinations, especially on the continent, courses such as Golf Las Americas are attached to a hotel which offers discounted rates to play and stay. The rates improve in

the summer months so that one night’s bed and breakfast here for two plus one round of golf is offered from 202 euros until 30 September 2015. The Abama course is another attached to a hotel, the Ritz-Carlton, where special rates are offered. The course contrasts markedly with Golf Las Americas; it is more of a stadium course with fair distances between tee and green which makes walking a challenge for anyone but the fittest. Any track where you have to avoid 22 lakes and 25,000 palm trees is tough and Abama certainly is a great test of golfing skills, or lack of them. Dave Thomas has used all his imagination to create some awe-inspiring holes hewn out of rocks and canyons which are a major feature of the landscape. The hotel offers a fine retreat from the rigours of the golf course with outstanding food, service and facilities. A golfing holiday to Tenerife would be incomplete without a visit to Golf Costa Adeje, arguably the flagship and most famous course on the island having staged the Spanish Ladies’ Open last September. The Pepe Gancedo layout is highly unusual – raised terraces made from boulders run across a number of fairways, old farm walls

Factbox Monarch, the scheduled leisure airline, operates flights to Tenerife from Birmingham, Leeds Bradford, London Gatwick, London Luton and Manchester airports with fares, including taxes, starting from £69.99 one way. line holes and some bunkers incorporate the volcanic signature sand of Tenerife. There is a sense that the course is longestablished and very traditional. This, plus the fantastic views, makes the course a pleasure to play. A number of holes have greens perched on the headland, framed by the azure colours of the ocean below. Other courses on the island include the Manuel Pinero modified Golf del Sur, the Donald Steel designed Amarilla Golf, the Ballesteros Buenavista, the very traditional Real Club de Golf de Tenerife, and Golf la Rosaleda. Further details of golf packages and special summer rates can be found at www.webtenerife.com/golf. Golf is not the only attraction on Tenerife. It’s home to 70 beaches, the majority of which have been awarded blue flag status. It’s an island of two halves; the lush north of the island complements the sunny and dry south, shielded from the wind and humidity by a mountainous landscape which divides the island into two different worlds. At the heart of the mountainous range is the Tiede National Park which features the spectacular Mount Tiede.Vast volcanic craters greet the visitor and imprints of lava flows

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

remain etched on the craggy landscape. A cable car will take you up to the very top of the volcano – although some hearty souls do attempt to walk. Whale and dolpin watching is also popular. The waters around the island are home to about 400 short-finned pilot whales and numerous bottlenose dolphins and tours are available all year round. Tenerife also has a well-deserved reputation as a culinary destination with its excellent food being complemented by some award-winning local wines which owe their success both to great

imagination and the subtropical climate. In addition to Hotel Las Madrigueras, visitors might want to consider the plush five-star Iberostar Anthelia Hotel or the comfortable and friendly Hotel Suite Villa Maria – also five-star. The former offers discounted packages to stay and play at Golf Las Americas and Costa Adeje while the latter offers three nights bed and breakfast from 197 euros per person until the end of September including two green fees, unlimited golf at Costa Adeje, buggies, lunchtime buffet at the course and taxes.

Keep on swinging Is back pain affecting your performance on the golf course? Here’s how the Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic can help.

I

recently treated a keen golfer who had low back pain. The pain was rapidly becoming a problem and he was unable to play golf. Following a couple of treatment sessions, he made a rapid improvement with his problem and felt that he was returning to normal. He also reported that his golf was better than he could ever remember as his distance and control had improved significantly. Why did his performance improve? Golf is similar to many sports in that it utilises rotation of the trunk and hips to generate power and control. The efficiency of how we rotate and the timing inherent in hitting a golf ball influences performance. When we hit a golf shot, the rotation of the body should be around the structures that are designed to rotate – i.e. the hips and the upper spine (approximately between the shoulders). You can still play golf with stiff hips or tight muscles between your shoulders, but you will struggle to achieve optimal performance. More importantly, if you start to rotate around the wrong areas – for example knees or lower spine – you could start to experience pain. The body has an amazing capacity to compensate for problems so, if your spine is painful and stiff, you start to move your body differently. Once you have learned this new pattern, it is hard to change. Many golfers spend hours sitting at work and blame getting older as the reason for the decline in their golf. Often, a sedentary lifestyle with bursts of golfing activity is not the best way to stress the body. It’s not ageing that causes most problems, but inactivity. The golfer above improved as he learned to move differently. He could rotate correctly and his back pain improved as he stopped stressing the wrong areas of his body. He also found he was winning more money from his friends, but he was reluctant to tell his golfing buddies where he went as he feared they may also improve! You know now, it was Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic. Steve Hodgson PhD, Director 2 Newbould Lane, Broomhil, S10 2PL Tel: 0114 2671 223 www.hallamshirephysiotherapy.com

The home of great golf With its idyllic location, fabulous facilities and thriving social scene, Sickleholme Golf Club is the ideal location for players of all abilities.

A

re you one of those misguided Sheffield residents who believe Derbyshire is too far to travel for a round of golf? Well, allow us to dispel the myth, as one of the region’s most well-loved golf clubs is in fact a mere 20-minute drive out of west Sheffield – that’s less time than it’d take you to get across town in traffic. And what a drive it is. Zipping through Derbyshire’s glorious countryside to Bamford, where Sickleholme Golf Club awaits, it’s almost worth the drive out there for the journey alone. Once you arrive at the club, officially established in 1898, you’ll be greeted by the friendly, welcoming staff – whether you’re new or a long-standing member – and instantly made to feel at home. The real jewel in Sickleholme’s crown, however, is those unbeatable views over the Peak District. Members can see for miles from their vantage point atop the beautifully manicured course, making it one of the most popular in the region for very good reason. It is in demand for corporate, charity and club captain’s away days, providing the perfect venue for a great day of golf and post-match relaxation. Members and visitors alike enjoy allyear-round golf with no temporary greens through the winter months. Nationally, golf membership is falling according to the English Golf Union;

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

their bi-annual report suggesting that clubs must adopt a more youthful approach, inviting more junior members and younger adults to join them, to combat the decline. Sickleholme has indeed moved with the times. It led the way in equality and has representatives from both men’s and ladies’ sections, who work together to shape the future of the club and meet the needs of all members. It also very much promotes mixed, junior and young-adult golf, with new categories for 20-30 year olds and 30-35 year olds being very well subscribed. Sickleholme is developing a reputation for its introductory membership deals with tuition and support for people new to golf. During the summer school holidays, fun tuition sessions are always popular for girls and boys from ages seven to 14 years and are available to non-members.

Though there are many opportunities for relaxed, social golf such as men’s and ladies’ fiddles and friendly matches with local clubs, there is still a healthy appetite for club competitions. Men also play in the Sheffield Golf Union leagues and there are more than 100 playing lady members, who run four Yorkshire league teams and also play in the Sheffield Evening League. And it’s not just playing members who are welcome to soak up the atmosphere at the club, as non-playing members and family members are also more than welcome. Be it the renowned Sunday roast (catering, by the way, is absolutely first class), a casual drink or joining in with one of the many social events, there is always plenty to do. The club is even available to hire for all kinds of events including weddings and parties. For full details of the club’s competitive fees – including the current offer of no joining fee for full and six-day memberships – check out the website www.sickleholme.co.uk. If you’d like to see what makes Sickleholme so special, arrange a visit by calling club manager and pro golfer Patrick Taylor on 01433 651306 or emailing enquries@sickleholme.co.uk. Beautiful Beauchief Put your game to the test at one of the city’s most stunning and challenging golf courses. around 370 yards, the course begins to open out, providing a birdie opportunity at the sixth and eighth holes either side of a challenging seventh. But the going gets tough at the ninth, tenth and 11th holes, where you’ll be happy to score level with your handicap. However, the 12th and 13th offer fantastic birdie opportunities, especially for those with a bit more experience. After that, the holes get more challenging. A complicated par three at the 15th leads into a tough downhill approach shot on the par-five 16th, with another birdie opportunity at the 17th. The 18th brings the course to an end with a difficult tee shot over some low trees and back towards the clubhouse. In terms of facilities, Beauchief is as wellequipped as they come, with a fully licensed bar and restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, even to non-golfers. It also houses an exceptional ladies section for females who want to enjoy a challenge while improving

their all-round game. It’s located a ten minute walk from Dore and Totley rail station and there are regular buses on the 97 and 98 bus routes to and from Sheffield City Centre. The course is operated by Sheffield City Trust Group. It offers a variety of membership products to suit players of all standards from beginner memberships, which include coaching, to the well-established and extremely good value ‘Golfit’ membership allowing unlimited use of five golf courses and seven gyms across Sheffield and Chesterfield. s far as Sheffield golf courses go, you’d struggle to play on a more historic one than Beauchief, just off Abbeydale Road South. It’s a spectacular course. Built in the 12th century, Beauchief Abbey provides the perfect backdrop to a course which is as varied as it is dramatic – and which can provide a challenge to golfers of all abilities. The first three holes throw players in at the deep end. Teeing off at the first, the fairway slopes steeply from left to right. Any miss-hit shots to the right will leave you with a near impossible second shot. Anything left of centre leaves a short iron or wedge to the green for the second shot, with the second and third holes providing similar challenges. When you arrive at the fourth, however, you meet the course’s signature hole. Located in the grounds of Beauchief Abbey, this hole has a stunning backdrop. After the fifth hole, a dog-leg left of

True romance The Black Swan Hotel: a quintessentially English venue where dream weddings come true.

T

he Black Swan Hotel in Helmsley, North Yorkshire is the most idyllic venue for a romantic countryinspired wedding. Steeped in history, an inn has stood on this spot since Tudor times, and during the 19th Century it was a pivotal staging post for the Helmsley Highflyer, en route York and Leeds. Its well-loved country charm, welcoming atmosphere and quaint English gardens, overlooking the pretty churchyard next door, made it the perfect venue for Annemarie King and her team to co-create a rustic-luxe themed photographic campaign. Model James with his red-haired beauties, Zara and Connor, the Irish red setter, are on location at The Black Swan Hotel www.blackswan-helmsley.co.uk to bring this theme to life with a touch of nostalgia. The evocative images are intimate, dream-like, and sometimes fun and light-hearted. The timeless, informal elegance of the photography shoot mirrors the essence of this

historic hotel venue – the smartly-tailored handsome groom James, in his Yorkshire tweeds and smartly polished brogues, along with his bride’s sweet, ethereal beauty and swan-like elegance make for a beautiful pairing, and Connor certainly adds a special appeal to the ‘family shots’. The various settings demonstrate the hotel’s oak beamed Tudor Lounge the hotel’s oldest part, with its original inglenook and the cosy stone-walled Crosland Lounge, as well as the pretty English walled gardens in which the new Oak Gazebo is located, which is now available for summer wedding ceremonies and celebrations. The hotel would like to thank all those who offered their talents and goods, including models James, Zara and Connor (and his lovely owner, Lorna Foster) Black Swan Hotel Market Place, Helmsley, YO62 5BJ 01439 770466 www.blackswan-helmsley.co.uk

On the trail of great tastes With its location on one of Derbyshire’s most beautiful cycle routes, Hassop Station Café makes a great place for a pitstop.

W

ith stunning views and one of the flattest cycling routes in the Peak District, it’s no surprise that the Monsal Trail attracts visitors in their droves. The eight-and-a-half mile stretch offers a traffic-free route for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users through some of the Peak District's most spectacular limestone dales and former railway tunnels. For many, a visit to the trail isn’t complete without a visit to Hassop Station because not only does it offer cycle hire and a book shop, but there is also the renowned Hassop Station Café on site, with a whole host of delicious dishes, homemade desserts and a large outside seating area. We visited the café one beautiful summer’s day, which meant we could take full advantage of the outside seating and watch cyclists pass by on the trail just metres away. Head chef Graham Mitchell took over the kitchen a year ago and has developed the menu with a greater range of salads and a focus on daily specials. The menu is extensive and includes anything from breakfasts and light bites, to sandwiches and burgers. On this occasion, the warm weather called for something light so I opted for the grilled halloumi and red pepper salad special. With fresh leaves, juicy

WESTSIDE 100

cherry tomatoes, pine nuts, a generous serving of halloumi and a sweet-chilli dressing – washed down with a chilled ginger beer – it was an ideal balance of sweet and savoury. My companion was in search of something more substantial, and found exactly what he was looking for on the toasted sandwich menu. Oozing with Swiss cheese and accompanied by tender pieces of steak, caramelised onions and gerkins, The Hassop Station NY steak melt was truly indulgent. An order of posh fries on the side – skinny chips with truffle oil and parmesan shavings – topped off the dish and he was suitably satisfied. With the mains cleared, we popped inside to peruse the impressive display of cakes. My toffee apple cake was beautifully moist and included juicy chunks of apple. With a top coating of toffee it would easily satisfy any sweet tooth. My partner’s wedge of tiffin was a true chocolate indulgence and came packed with raisins and chunks of biscuit. Although the café is a popular haunt for breakfasts and lunches, last year it began opening in the evening and now stays open until 9pm Wednesday to Saturday for customers to enjoy stone-baked pizzas and many more delicious dishes. Finishing our desserts, we knew it wouldn’t be long before we’d be planning a return visit to experience the café in the evening.

Box of delights Never judge a book by its cover, or a restaurant for that matter.

S

ometimes good things come in the plainest packages – nice shoes in boring cardboard boxes; tax rebates in dull, brown envelopes – surprises don’t have to be gift-wrapped to be nice. And that principle definitely applies to Peppercorn, an unassuming box of delights unobtrusively tucked away in a car park next to Dore railway station on Abbeydale Road South. The outward appearance may be low key, but the door gives way to a cheerful, sunny room full of twinkling glass and shiny cutlery – an inviting setting made extra welcoming by friendly and attentive service. Peppercorn prides itself on its fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and to prove the point excellent homemade bread rolls got things off to a good start while we checked out the menu.

What we ate: Starters Salmon poached in soy and ginger with an Oriental salad, £7 Crab timbale with warm shrimp broth, £8 Mains Monkfish poached in chicken stock with fondant potatoes and Mediterranean vegetables, £19 Roasted loin of venison with neeps, tatties and lamb sweetbread bon-bons, £19 Side dishes Braised red cabbage, £3.95 Green beans with goat’s cheese and chilli sauce, £3.95 Dessert Summer pudding with vanilla cream and fresh berries, £6 Drinks Conviviale Montepulciano, carafe, £8.50 Peppercorn 289 Abbeydale Road South, Sheffield, S17 3LB Tel: 0114 235 0101 www.peppercorn-restaurant.co.uk

They came with a choice of butter; plain and creamy or a more-ish dollop with the tang of Henderson’s Relish – the Sheffield ingredient that seems to get everywhere these days and which, as here, adds a lively touch. There’s a £5-£10-£5 midweek menu available Tuesday to Thursday, which offers straightforward fare such as pan-fried salmon and braised lamb and which makes an affordable option for a weekday treat. But we chose from the a la carte menu, which allows head chef Charlie Curran to really show off his skills. To start with, my crab timbale, a cylinder of sweet and delicate crabmeat, was accompanied by tiny shrimps and a clear broth that provided just the right amount of seaside saltiness. Across the table, perfectly poached salmon came with a lively soy and ginger dressing with an Oriental salad providing a touch of veggie crunch. For mains, my roasted loin of venison was pink and tender, bathed in a silky jus and accompanied by lamb sweetbreads – delicate little morsels – with potatoes and mashed golden swede. Comfort food par excellence. The seafood theme continued across the table, where sweet juicy chunks of tender monkfish came appealingly presented on a bed of colourful Mediterranean vegetables. An intriguing barbecue-y aroma turned out to be coming from a delicious smoked aubergine puree, an unusual and unexpected twist to the fish.

Words: Richard Smith

Portions are generous so choosing two side dishes was almost a step too far, but I couldn’t resist the red cabbage, which is just made to go with venison, while the green beans came highly recommended by our waitress. She wasn’t wrong as the addition of goat’s cheese and a zingy chilli sauce turned the humble vegetable into a luxurious treat. The dessert menu is short, sweet – chocolate torte, lemon tart, crème brulee – and eye-catching – camomile-flavoured pannacotta with elderflower champagne sorbet. But a shard light summer pudding with fresh berries and vanilla cream hit the spot nicely. Peppercorn has plenty of culinary history to live up to – discerning Dore diners will remember previous incarnations as Carriages and Moran’s which set the culinary bar high. On this evidence, Peppercorn more than lives up to its illustrious predecessors.

Catering for all

From pub classics to haute cuisine, you can now enjoy the best of both worlds at the Cross Scythes, Totley.

L

et us begin with a word of reassurance. The hearty traditional dishes that have been the foundation of a much-loved menu at one of Sheffield’s oldest pubs remain intact. So, if you fancy a steak or fish and chips, all is present and correct. But there is no point in employing a ‘proper’ chef with a high-end restaurant background unless you are going to give him the chance to express himself… which is the reason I found myself eating lobster thermidor spring rolls at the Cross Scythes in Totley. This decidedly un-pubby starter came courtesy of Simon Ayres, formerly of the Milestone and Showroom Café, whose summer menu provides a delicate balance between standard dishes and his own trademark style of serving restaurant classics with a twist. Meanwhile, the setting is nicely relaxed with friendly, attentive service. The Cross Scythes is big enough to serve all needs, with a spacious bar, a sunny outdoor area, and a choice of indoor dining options. Thanks to some welcome inside information from director Stuart Hitchman, we were able to select a quiet corner far away from a couple with young baby in tow. Good call. Starters included the aforementioned lobster dish which had so piqued my interest.

Chef Simon Ayres

WESTSIDE 108

You get two spring rolls, generously stuffed with lobster thermidor. It is incredibly rich and very filling, a good dish to share if you are worried about being undone before the main course arrives. Equally impressive was our other starter, thick slices of tender braised ox tongue, served with black pudding, spinach and apricot. You don’t see tongue on too many menus these days, but this delicious starter made us realise what we had been missing. My main course came from the daily specials menu, a generous portion of crab spaghetti with confit shallots and parmesan with two sparkling fresh fried fillets of sea bass on top. With clean, sharp flavours and unfussy presentation this was a real treat. My companion’s main course of pork fillet with a green pistachio crust, spring asparagus, roast beets and coriander looked striking and once again it was the balance of flavours that made this dish exceptional. Pork fillet is lean with a delicate flavour and a tendency to dry out very fast if overcooked; this was nicely judged. Presentation of all dishes was attractive, and that included two lovely desserts. Blood orange tart comes with a sprinkling of mint and flowers, blobs of mango puree and a tangy posset with the necessary sharpness to counter the smooth, sweet tart. One of the newer pieces of kit to arrive in the Cross Scythes kitchen is a state-of-art ice-cream maker, and a show-stopping dish of five scoops of different flavours, set out in a row with shards of meringue, biscuits and all sorts of goodies, shows it has been put to good use. The pistachio was particularly fine. With a very decent wine list, including great choices by the glass, and good coffee, this was an excellent meal in surroundings to match.

Add spice to the summer

Words and photography: Richard Abbey

Forget the barbecue, it‘s never too hot for a curry at Butlers Balti House.

H

ot summer days are made for barbecues and beer gardens, right? Scorching sun, sizzling sausages and a cool San Miguel in hand has surely got to be a winning combination. There’s plenty of truth in this statement but this does not always necessarily ring true for everyone. Take our early Saturday evening visit to Butlers Balti House. After bathing in temperatures around the mid-twenties all day, we sat down amongst couples, families and large parties who were all tucking in to dinner which begged the question, can it ever be too hot for a curry? It didn’t seem to be on this occasion. The large Broad Lane venue is light and stylish, with lots of ebony and chrome to give it a contemporary edge. There’s a small bar and waiting area but we headed straight to our table in the restaurant, which was buys already. One thing we noticed immediately was the number of staff; more than enough to maintain your attention throughout the evening. Our drinks orders were quickly taken while we perused the extensive menu. Butlers, unsurprisingly given their name, specialise in balti dishes which are traditional north Indian dishes cooked in cast iron pots. The restaurant take things a step further by serving your curry in these dishes, which adds a nice touch of theatre to your meal (they do seem to keep your curry nice and hot too). After crunching our way through a poppadom or two, we started with recommended dishes of tandoori fish and a mixed starter. The fish, haddock on this occasion, was firm and meaty and not

WESTSIDE 110

overpowered by the tandoori spices. A nice, light dish to start. The mixed starter consisted of a spicy seekh kebab, pieces of chicken tikka, onion bhaji and finger-licking tandoori chicken wings. For mains we were again happy to be steered by our waiter and owner Sajid Quader who recommended a new addition to the menu – Arabian lamb. ‘Perfect for summer’ said Sajid, it was a fragrant dish of lamb fillet, mushrooms, cream, fresh mint and coriander. It was delicious; light, fresh and with just the right amount of spice. We also shared a special jalfrezi which also had just the right amount of kick to complement a very rich, tasty sauce with chicken tikka, lamb, prawns and king prawns. Pilau rice and a garlic naan bread were more

than adequate sundries. Since moving to the Broad Lane premises, the Butlers empire has continued to grow. You’ll now find an equally big first floor space to complement the main restaurant which is largely used for conferences and private parties (or extra space if the restaurant is particularly busy). Butlers have enhanced their takeaway service with the introduction of an app, meaning you can order and pay for food for delivery or collection at the touch of a button. The night was still young as we left the restaurant which was continuing to get busier. On this evidence, who needs barbecues and beer gardens when you can enjoy a good old curry?

WS Motoring

Turning over a new leaf Alfa Romeo has unveiled a serious contender to the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class – and boy does it look good. The Giulia, the long-awaited successor to the 159, is dripping with Italian style and elegance but has lots more to make you sit up and take note. For a start, it’s rear-wheel drive (all-wheel drive will also be available) with perfect 50/50 weight distribution; a strong indication that it will drive as good as it looks. This is aided by the use of carbon fibre, aluminium and plastic, giving the car an extraordinary weight-to-power ratio. The Giulia will launch in 2016 with the flagship Quadrifoglio version, a 510hp behemoth which utilises a state-of-the-art six cylinder turbo petrol engine with Ferrari-inspired technologies. The queue starts here.

Some old favourites get a new lease of life while Alfa Romeo unveil their latest superstar, writes Richard Abbey. A new class of MINI Although larger than its predecessor, the biggest changes to the new MINI Clubman have been made under the bonnet with the introduction of new TwinPower Turbo Technology engines. Three units will be available from launch, the MINI Cooper Clubman, the MINI Cooper D Clubman and the MINI Cooper S Clubman, with prices starting from £19,995. A choice of two petrol engines with three or four cylinders will be offered alongside a four-cylinder diesel. Six-speed manual transmissions will be offered as standard although a new eight-speed Steptronic transmission will be available as an option on the MINI Cooper D and MINI Cooper S Clubman. All cars will come with MINI’s highly acclaimed Navigation System as standard.

Dynamic class Mercedes-Benz’s change of direction for it’s A-Class proved to be a gamble worth taking – and now they’ve unveiled a new version of the sporty hatchback. Lookswise you’ll be hard pushed to notice any difference; it’s inside where the changes have been made. The biggest improvement is perhaps the introduction of DYNAMIC SELECT, which allows the driver to change the car’s characteristics at the touch of a button. The engine, transmission, suspension, steering and air conditioning are all tuned to fit with one of the selected driving modes – Comfort, Sport, Eco and Individual. There’ll be four petrol engines and four diesel engines, the latter of which includes a new 109hp A180 d with CO2 emissions of just 89g/km.

Brand icon The Mazda MX-5 has long been considered one of the best – if not the best – valuefor-money roadsters on the market. And now it just got even better. The all-new model, characterised by rearwheel drive, perfect 50/50 weight distribution and more comfort and technology than ever before, was launched at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed. It’s shorter, lower and wider than its predecessor as well as lighter. Two SKY ACTIV-G petrol engines – a 1.5-litre 131ps and 2.0-litre 160ps – will be available along with five trim levels. All models feature LED headlights, alloy wheels and a six-speed manual gearbox. Jeremy Thomson, Mazda Motors UK managing director, said: “The MX-5 is Mazda’s brand icon and it embodies all that is great about our products. Its fun to drive character has strengthened the bond between Mazda and its customers for 25 years.” The new MX-5 will continue to offer value for money, with prices ranging from £18,495 to £23,295.

Bespoke excellence Painstaking craftmanship and attention to detail mean that each kitchen David J Martin creates is unique. Standing out from the crowd: David J Martin

WESTSIDE 130

t’s no secret that many of us think of the kitchen as the heart of the home. And that’s no surprise because, whether it’s simply putting your feet up with a cuppa and catching up with friends, or cooking a huge turkey for Christmas day, the kitchen is a room that almost every guest is guaranteed to see and should be a place you are proud of. If you are not satisfied with the condition of your kitchen, perhaps it is time for a revamp. Whether you know exactly what you want to achieve, or have absolutely no idea, the experienced and friendly staff at David J Martin can help you realise your kitchen’s potential. The company is currently celebrating an impressive 35 years in business and managing director David Martin believes that providing excellent customer service and quality, bespoke products is the formula for success. “Our attention to detail is second to none and this makes us stand out from the crowd. We

are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch – even down to making our own cutters for producing mouldings,” he said. This means you can add to your kitchen in years to come and the company will still be able to match the designs. At David J Martin you will get a kitchen that is unique to you. The cabinetmakers work from plans drawn by David and create bespoke furniture, which you can see being made in the workshops. They can spray doors to high gloss or satin finishes using durable Two Pac paint. With larger companies, you will often see doors advertised as having a ‘high-gloss finish’. This means that they are vinyl-wrapped and, although this does produce a shiny look, it means that you will be able to see the joins. David J Martin’s professional sprayer can apply any colour you wish in their paint-spraying booth, giving a modern finish with no joins. That means water cannot seep in and cause peeling – something that can happen with vinylwrapped doors. Everything is done in-house, which enables David to guarantee high quality at every stage. As well as providing excellent products and kitchens, the company is highly regarded for its great customer and after-sales service. If you have any problems, queries or complaints, they will help to put them right – and that applies whether you’ve had your new kitchen for two weeks or ten years. It is a truly caring approach and, with much of the business’s work coming from customer recommendations, it is clearly a good one. As well as their workshop, you can see examples of the company’s work in the showroom at David J Martin’s premises on Springvale Road, Sheffield. As well as kitchens, they create wardrobes, media centres and studies. David said: “We run a building company alongside our bespoke joinery company, so customers are not waiting for plumbers, electricians and so on. We can take care of everything and ensure that the project is completed to the highest standard.”

‘Our attention to detail is second to none and this makes us stand out from the crowd. We are not held to ransom by mass-produced products as we make everything from scratch.’
