Summer is a time when we all like to unwind and maybe plan a holiday. It’s also a great time to think ahead about how you can have more leisure time in the future. Ensuring your financial matters are in order now may help you feel more relaxed about the future. Here are Hamnett Wealth Management’s top 3 financial matters to tackle this summer:

1. Take control of your pension arrangements Whether you’re looking to set up a pension, save money on annual management charges or to reduce fees on expensive pension plans, make sure you review your current pension arrangements to see whether they are likely to help you achieve your retirement goals.

2. Review your investments Investment values have risen well in the last 12 months but volatility has been high. With fast changing political events affecting markets, it is imperative that your portfolio and pensions are strategically invested to profit from uncertainty and protect yourself from market shocks.

3. Question your current financial advisor Do you know what they are charging you in fees? Recent press reports have highlighted several cases of people moving their portfolios and pensions from a certain provider because they have been subjected to high fees, poor service and a lack of transparency. Hamnett Wealth Management offer unbiased, expert financial planning advice. Our professional, qualified Independent Financial Advisers take time to understand your specific requirements, aims and financial objectives to ensure your future is secure. Our services include: Take control of your financial future today with Hamnett Wealth Management. We offer a free initial face-to-face consultation where we will assess your needs and explain how we can help. Call us now on: 0114 235 3500 or email us at: advice@hamnettwealth.com

PROMOTION

CREATE YOUR OWN GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF KITCHEN.

The recipe for success s the summer heats up, it can only mean one thing: it’s time for the return of The Great British Bake Off to our screens. Prue, Paul and the team will be back in the famous tent this August for our annual blast of sugar, showstoppers and soggy bottoms. If the show inspires you to embrace your inner domestic goddess, there’s no need to stop once the technical challenges are over. Create your own extra slice by bringing the look and feel of the Bake Off kitchen into your home. Here are some ideas from Wren Kitchens to get you started...

A

PERFECT PASTELS

If you close your eyes and picture the Great British Bake Off, you’ll see picture perfect baking stations complete with pastel units and accessories. The colour palette available from Wren Kitchens’ Macaroon Collection includes some perfect pastel blues, greens, lavenders and lemons so you can recreate this look at home. Try pretty Jelly Bean, Bubblegum, Lavender, Spearmint and Lemon Curd from Wren’s new Macaroon Collection. Or opt for a gentle neutral scheme with soft creams or whites and add a splash of pastel paint on your kitchen walls to bring the whimsical look of the Bake Off kitchen into your home. Accessories are a great way to introduce more colour - and what says Bake Off more than a KitchenAid stand mixer? These fantastic appliances make baking a dream and, among the colours on offer are Ice Blue and Pistachio so you can step into the shoes of the Bake Off contestants. And who says white goods have to be white? Choose a fridge in a range of pretty pastels from Smeg’s 50s Retro Style Fridge Freezer in Pastel Blue, or go for that authentic Bake Off look by choosing their showstopping curved Gorenje Retro Freestanding Fridge Freezer in Champagne. SIGNATURE STYLE

The Great British Bake Off kitchen is all about nostalgia for a traditional country kitchen. From the trademark bunting to the shaker-style units, the vibe captures the charm 16 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

of days gone by. You can get the look with Wren’s charming Shaker, Country and Edwardian kitchens with their panelled units and traditional handle options. All available in a wide range of colours. Break up that modular fitted kitchen feel with a choice of bespoke feature units. An open dresser unit is perfect for displaying your vintage crockery with pride. Open shelves in tower units or at the end of a run add to the timeless feel of a kitchen - as well as offering easy access and convenient storage. ISLAND PARADISE

Be the star of your own show with every baker’s dream - a kitchen island all to yourself for prepping, mixing and decorating. At Wren Kitchens you can sit with an expert Kitchen Designer and create an island that is perfect for your dream kitchen. Style it up with open shelves and finish it off with a cook’s table suited for all baking connoisseurs. Accessorise with vintage bowls, cooking tools, and wicker baskets to store those yummy ingredients. There are hundreds of special features to choose from; your island will be entirely unique, so be sure to inject all your personality into it. You can even make your

island an efficient workstation, just like those seen on the Bake Off. Add stacks of drawer units and appliances such as a fridge or wine cooler, build in a hob and a Belfast sink with an antique brass tap; the possibilities are endless. WONDERFUL WORKTOPS

A staple of the Great British Bake Off kitchen is the traditional timber worktop. A timber worktop is a lovely surface to work on and gives a warm finish to any kitchen. Like a Shaker kitchen - timber worktops work just as well in modern or period homes. Timber worktops at Wren Kitchens are made from the highest quality Danish-sourced wood produced to exacting standards with a lustrous, silky smooth finish. Available in Oak and Walnut and in two thicknesses, you can choose the right shade for your kitchen. Serious bakers can bring the features of a professional kitchen into their own home by integrating a Carrara marble pastry slab into their worktop. Marble maintains a low temperature which helps to keep pastry cool and stops dough from sticking for a perfect bake. A PROFESSIONAL-STANDARD OVEN

However good your baking skills, a sub standard oven will let you down. Spend time researching all the various features that different ovens include - from warming drawers to sliding doors - and think about what you value as a baker. For an oven with everything, look no further than the NEFF Slide&Hide® Oven, available from Wren Kitchens, which comes complete with the sliding door feature seen on the Great British Bake Off and 12 different heating methods several of which are designed with bakers in mind including the Bread Baking and Dough Proving settings. The perfect place to start your Bake Off transformation journey is your local Wren Kitchens Showroom where you can feast your eyes on the full range of units, colours, worktops, appliances and accessories. THINK PRINTS, PALM TREES AND PINEAPPLES... THIS SUMMER’S HOME TRENDS TAKE ON A CARIBBEAN TWIST. BY LUCY HAINSWORTH. his summer’s trend consists of ornaments bursting with botanical bliss and pineapple prints, to give this season’s home a tropical twist. You’ll find plenty of palm tree and banana leaf clad homeware on the high streets right now, which are sure to give any garden party a holiday vibe. Leaf prints add a touch of nature to artificial features in the home, with lampshades and bedding making you feel like you’ve woken up in the great outdoors. You may even find birds of

T

paradise sneaking their way into homeware, with tables and chairs growing bird’s legs. The pineapples add to this tropical sensation and are usually coupled with fierce gold to give this theme a sophisticated yet playful look. Metallics are always a winner, so reinforce these with some silver of gold wall hangings. With décor like this, your house will certainly stand out from the crowd and make your summer feel a lot more vibrant and stylish whether you’re inside your home and out in the garden.

Diamonds are forever… ZOE LEWIS, JEWELLER AND GEMMOLOGIST AT PA JEWELLERY, EXAMINES THE LASTING APPEAL OF ETERNITY RINGS. ustomers often ask us when they should buy an eternity ring for their partner. This isn’t a straightforward question to answer; there is not a single event strongly associated with an eternity ring, as there is with an engagement or wedding ring. They are most commonly purchased as an anniversary gift, often to celebrate a special anniversary such as the first, tenth or twentyfifth. Other popular reasons are the birth of a first child or a special birthday. For most it is the sentiment that is important, and the occasion provides an opportunity for renewing the expression of love that has already been made with the engagement and wedding rings. A complete band of gems makes the perfect symbol of love; reflecting the ancient belief in the circle as a symbol of eternity. Eternity rings themselves have been known since at least the eighteenth century, when they would often feature paste (glass) stones or a mixture of different gems. In the early decades of the twentieth century diamonds were becoming more available and consequently more commonly used in eternity rings. Synthetic spinel was also a popular choice, making use of the latest advances in the synthesis of gemstones to provide a more affordable option that imitated the appearance of diamond.

C

46 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

In the 1960s DeBeers began to promote the idea of a diamond set eternity ring. It allowed DeBeers to target an older, married audience and also provided an opportunity to sell more of the smaller diamonds not suitable for solitaire engagement rings! The original slogan for this campaign was “She married you for richer or poorer. Let her know how it’s going”. This, and subsequent campaigns with similarly light-hearted slogans ensured the giving of an eternity ring soon became a tradition almost as universal as engagement and wedding rings. While eternity rings were traditionally a full band of gems it is now more common for a half-set band to be chosen. The principal reason for this is that it is a more practical style for regular wear since it is plain around the lower half of the band, making the ring easier to adjust in size and more comfortable to wear. The wide range of settings and styles available now also encourages great

variation in what is chosen as an eternity ring. For many people, it is important to find a design that complements their existing engagement and wedding rings, as the eternity ring is traditionally worn alongside them on the same finger. Diamond-set bands traditionally regarded as eternity rings are increasingly popular as wedding rings too. An eternity ring is still often added later, perhaps duplicating the wedding ring to form a complete set on the finger, or worn separately on the right hand, allowing for an expanded choice of style and size. Whatever the occasion, an eternity ring is a beautiful way to reaffirm your love and our experienced team of jewellers and gemmologists can guide you through the process and the range of options available.

Employment references KNOW YOUR RIGHTS, SAYS JENNIFER WALKER, HEAD OF EMPLOYMENT LAW AT GRAYSONS. our employer isn’t obliged to give you a reference unless your terms and conditions of employment or contract say it must, or you’ve got written proof that it has said it will. Some regulated professions, however, such as the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), have rules saying that references must be provided. If your employer does give you a reference, it must be fair and accurate and in line with any policy that it has regarding references. Some employers only give simple factual references that might include your job title, dates of employment and salary. If a reference request asks for more information about you, or includes a questionnaire, your employer doesn’t have to comply. A reference request cannot ask for more personal information, or for someone’s ‘feelings’ about you. A prospective employer needs your permission to approach your current employer, or any referee, for a reference. Remember, though, that job offers are usually subject to the receipt of satisfactory references from ex-employers. If your employer doesn’t reply to a request, there is not much you can do, and you may be asked to provide a different referee. A reference cannot include information that isn’t true. Investigations, disciplinaries and subsequent action can be mentioned, but an investigation where no action was taken as

Y

48 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

you were not found guilty cannot, although an exception to this can exist where disciplinary proceedings are pending against you when you left your employment. If you have been dismissed, an employer can give the facts of the dismissal. Spent criminal convictions cannot be referred to, although unspent convictions relevant to the job can. If you think your employer has given you a bad reference, you can ask for a copy, but the employer doesn’t have to provide it. You can make a subject access request to the reference receiver and it should provide you with a copy of the reference. If information within it is incorrect, you can ask the provider to correct it. In a recent case, Hincks v Sense Network Ltd [2018] EWHC 533 (QB), the High Court clarified an employer’s position regarding providing a fair, true and accurate reference. A company terminated a financial adviser’s authority to act because of ‘malicious’ breaches of pre-approved processes. The company had to pay £12,000 to clients in compensation. When the financial advisor asked the company for a reference, it referred to the allegations, investigation and subsequent compensation. The financial advisor didn’t get the new job and sued the company for negligent misstatement, saying that the investigation was an ‘inadequate sham’. He lost his case as the High Court

Jennifer Walker, head of employment law

found that a reference giver isn’t required to review procedural fairness of an investigation where it is relying on the findings of that investigation. Also, where the reference giver is under an obligation to provide a reference, e.g. FCA, the reference must contain all relevant facts. If you believe that a bad reference was given because you made a complaint to your employer in the past, this may lead to an employment tribunal claim. For example, if you have blown the whistle about a serious failure, complained of discrimination or assisted a colleague with their grievance, you may have a claim for detriment or victimisation, but you must seek advice from our experts quickly because time limits are short. We can help put your case together and represent you at tribunal. Additionally, you may have a civil court claim for negligent misstatement, malicious falsehood or defamation. Where care comes first IF YOU ARE GOING ON HOLIDAY, YOU CAN BE SURE THAT YOU WILL BE LEAVING YOUR PET IN GOOD HANDS AT CENTRE BARKS @ MOSCAR.

hat a difference a family holiday can make. But before we go off to sun ourselves, we want to make sure our pets are in good hands. The team at Centre Barks @Moscar, The Pet Holiday Village, are just as determined to give your cats and dogs a relaxing break too. John Walsh has owned the kennels since 1999, and was joined by wife Jemma some years later. They owned the ‘Moscar Kennels’ up until 2011, but left the business for six years to concentrate on their family. Back with even more enthusiasm and plenty of improvements to the facilities, they decided it was the perfect time to relaunch the business under its new name – Centre Barks@Moscar Ltd. Both the cattery and kennels have been fully refurbished since the start of 2018. The cattery has been refurbished with PVC doors and windows allowing for a bright and airy environment, where felines have moorland views. Each pen has three levels for cats to climb, a private bedroom area and undershelf

heating to keep them warm and windows in each for ventilation. Double and triple pens are available for cats from the same home staying together. The kennels have a holiday theme, with each door painted in a bright colour to make them look like rows of beach huts. These pens have hatches into outside areas, giving dogs the space to stretch their legs and to get some fresh air. The downstairs kennels have been specially designed with UPVC windows and panels to give a secure and calming area as well as barred doors allowing dogs to talk to one another. All the kennels feature underfloor heating throughout. If you have a particularly nervous dog, the upstairs kennels are modelled more like the cattery, with each pen sectioned off with sound-proof double glazing making it more relaxing for dogs who are timid or just prefer a quieter life. This luxury pet holiday village offers 46 canine and 22 cat chalets of varying size from single occupancy rooms to family suites.

Centre Barks@Moscar have recently installed new viewing windows down to the kennel block and play areas to allow visitors to see the high quality of care and facilities offered. “Transparency is really important to us,” says John, who also welcomes visitors to drop in each day between 10am and 4pm to look around. Upon check-in you will be asked about your pets dietary requirements so that meals can be provided to their needs – major brands of dog and cat food are stocked with a variety of flavours or raw meat diet catered for. Pets on specific diets are also welcome to bring their own food if preferred. Dog owners will also be asked about their pets exercise routine and if they are able to be walked outdoors around the moorland paddocks, play in the new indoor agility arena and if they would like there canine friends to socialise with others in the play area. Pet owners are invited to follow the Centre

John, Jemma and the team are also more than happy to chat to owners about how their pet is getting on over the phone or via email. Another fantastic facility is the grooming room. Their onsite qualified groomer is available to bathe, trim and blow dry dogs, while those staying seven days or more receive a complementary bath, so that when you come to collect them, they are just as pampered as you after your holiday. The upstairs area is also home to the small animals room, where rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents are welcome to stay. The team have plans to extend this side of the business in future. First ladies WANT TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS? THESE INSPIRATIONAL FEMALES ARE EXAMPLES OF HOW YOU CAN THRIVE.

ur region boasts many exceptional businesses run by exceptional women. Over the next few pages we will present just a select few of these amazing people, showing you what makes them motivated to do what they do, and how they have built up to their successes. This month’s feature includes many inspirational women in business. Take Katie Handley of b.biscuit, whose baby and children’s boutique specialises in fun, comfortable and organic clothing. She runs the whole business almost single-handedly as well as having two young children to care for. Also offering a valuable service is Katy Robinson, the director and creator of ‘On Broadway’®, who uses dance and costumes to help her clients feel healthy and confident inside and out. Meanwhile, Helen Mouzakis, who owns The Greedy Greek with her husband, Dennis, discusses her passion for fresh and authentic food, and how getting to know customers and clients through catering events is the best part of her job. Tiina Carr, owner-operator of Brocco on the Park, meanwhile talks about the team’s recent accolades and why communication is the key to running any kind of business. We also meet Stephanie Connelly of The Old School House Nursery Schools. Stephanie offers parents a chance to give their children quality care and education. This motivated woman wants all children to have access to extensive resources and to have enjoyment from their education.

O

Tiina Carr of Brocco on the Park Tiina Carr, owner-operator of Brocco on the Park, knows a thing or two about business. Having run two successful businesses in her career so far, Tiina worked with major blue chip companies on branding, internal communications and customer service programmes at the Workshop design agency before creating her own brand with Brocco on the Park. The popular boutique hotel and modern kitchen at Hunters Bar has been open for almost four years now, and has attracted national and local accolades. The winner of Westside’s coveted Restaurant of the Year award 2018 – plus Best Hotel Restaurant and Young Chef of the Year award – Brocco has recently been shortlisted for a prestigious White Rose Yorkshire awards in the Small Hotel category. Tiina said: “It’s wonderful to receive this recognition for what we do at Brocco. Having a committed, creative and communicative team is what lies behind our customer service standards, inventive menus and attention to detail.” The Nether Edge-based businesswoman believes that clear communication goes a long way. “I have endeavoured to create a company culture based on communication, feedback and shared values. As a team, we listen to what our customers want and act on it, and we encourage the same openness with our staff. “We don’t intend on standing still but constantly look to keep things fresh and different, with plenty of reasons for customers to return time and time again.”

Helen Mouzakis of The Greedy Greek Deli Helen Mouzakis is the catering and events manager and company secretary for Mouzakis Catering Ltd – the business that owns The Greedy Greek Deli and new food home delivery and collection service, Greek Deli Direct. “We produce homemade Greek food, which we sell from our deli in Sheffield and via our direct side of the business, including catering for weddings and events,” says Helen. “I do everything from dealing with accounts, payroll and admin, to marketing and advertising, but the part of my job I like best is meeting people to organise events and parties.” Helen runs the business with her husband, Dennis, who is always increasing the amount of produce they grow organically, so they can be sure of it is of the highest quality and that their customers continue to be happy with their food. Going forward, Helen is looking forward to growing the business further, keep listening to their customers and to continue to enjoy her work. “We plan to develop our outside catering further and will shortly have three mobile units available to do events and to ensure our popular deli at Hunters Bar keeps Sheffield customers well-fed and happy. “I’d also like to train up more staff for this side of the business because good staff are key to the success of any business.” And though it can be tough, Helen’s advice to other new businesswomen is to keep going. “It’s hard work, long hours and no me-time, but in the end you will get there and the sense of achievement is amazing. You are in the driving seat and can do the things you love – stick at it!”

Sheffield Club raises £5,800 for hospice with Sir Martyn Lewis lunch Veteran broadcaster and St Luke’s Hospice patron Sir Martyn Lewis helped raised £5,800 for the charity when he was the special guest of the Sheffield Club. The Sheffield Club provides a forum for the encouragement of contacts between its members, through regular lunches and special networking events. And Sir Martyn joined the organisation for a special lunch in support of Sheffield’s only hospice at popular city restaurant Baldwin’s Omega. “Guests enjoyed Sir Martyn’s stories of working in journalism and also his impassioned speech about how important hospice care is in Sheffield and the UK,” said St Luke’s community fundraising manager Megan Senior. “We are delighted that The Sheffield Club invited him to be their guest speaker and that the event raised such a great sum for our continued patient care.” PICTURED (L-R): St Luke’s Chief Executive Peter Hartland, Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire Andrew Coombe, Sir Martyn Lewis, St Luke’s President Lady Anne Neill and Sheffield Club President David Batey

IT’S GOOD FOR THE GLEN The Glen Private Nursing Home was inspected in April 2018 by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and was awarded ‘Good’ across all categories (safe, effective, caring, responsive and wellled). Comments from the inspection report confirm the Glen’s values of care, dignity and respect for the individual: “People spoken with were very positive about their experience of living at The Glen. They told us they felt safe and they liked the staff. Staff knew people well and positive, caring relationships had been developed. “A programme of activities was in place so people were provided with a range of leisure opportunities. And we observed positive and caring relationships between staff and people using the service. The care staff were well trained and performed their jobs well. “A varied and nutritious diet was provided to support people’s health and respect their preferences, and the chef who was knowledgeable about people’s individual needs, likes and dislikes. “We saw in all cases people were cared for by staff that were kind, patient and respectful. People’s privacy and dignity was promoted and respected. “We found a welcoming, open and positive culture at the service that was encouraged and supported by the registered manager and assistant matron.” The Glen is currently undergoing a programme of refurbishment following the acquisition of the home by assistant matron, Kathryn Ferris, and her family, in May 2018. Managing director. Why is it important to seek the best possible advice in your line of work?

“With items from £10 to £50,000, we like to think we have something for everybody.”

Jewellery is often purchased to mark the most special occasions in our lives; birthdays, engagements, weddings, to celebrate our children’s births and even to remember loved ones. So why leave getting the perfect item to chance? Not to mention how getting the right advice can save a costly mistake when making a substantial purchase. Our jewellers are not paid commission on sales, so you can be assured that any advice is in your interest. We often recommend a less costly option if we think it will be better suited to you, and can suggest ideas that you may not even know were possible. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

With items from £10 to £50,000, we like to think we have something for everybody. We have six fully qualified gemmologists who hold the coveted Gem-A Diploma in gemmology, diamond graders and degree-trained jewellery designers. Every jeweller that will greet you in our showroom has at least five years trade experience, in addition to any qualifications. Our goldsmiths are some of the best in the industry, too. As well as two jewellery and silversmithing degrees, they have well over 70 years combined experience between the four of them, and an amazing combined skill set to tackle almost every jewellery related job. Any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about?

Our founder Mike Marsh passed away in February, which has been a huge loss to us all. MEET THE EXPERT

Tony Meadows Blenheim Park Developments Ltd, 264 Carterknowle Road, S7 2EB Type of business.

Construction and property development. What is your role in your company?

Operations Director. How did you end up in this type of business?

I ended up working in construction after leaving the Armed Forces. Initially, I started in a builders merchants yard as a fork lift truck driver and worked my way up to foreman. From there, I moved into sales and then into branch management. Blenheim Park Developments were valued customers and once the owners found out I was leaving my previous employer, we shook hands and I’ve been here ever since. Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?

Builders can be perceived as being unscrupulous, but the truth is we’re not – well most of us aren’t anyway. I would always advise potential clients to consider listening to the experts, and taking advice from people (like ourselves) who know the business, can advise on planning matters, help with architectural services and have a procurement function that

can help save money. Good advice is key. Research your contractor, look at their portfolio and visit current projects. Anyone can place a reference on a web page, but the best contractors can usually show you ‘live’ projects. Most importantly, be comfortable with the people you’re going to be spending a lot of time working with. What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

Engage your expert in at the conception stage. Their knowledge may save you time and money, as they can advise on what can and can’t be done and any constraints that may limit the scope of work. Any future developments for yourself or your business that you would like to tell us about?

We’re very busy at the moment with various new build and refurbishment projects, with plenty more in the pipeline. We are currently finishing one of the largest private residential properties ever built in the city, which we are immensely proud to have been a part of. Plus we’re branching out into commercial works and we are busy with our in-house architectural and planning services.

“Engage your expert in at the conception stage. Their knowledge may save you time and money.”

Managing director. How did you end up in this type of business?

I helped in the family party-planning business whilst at college. By the time I’d finished my studies the business had progressed onto selling readymade curtains, and it was naturally assumed that I’d join the business full-time, so I did. Fast-forward over 30 years and we now specialise in all aspects of made-to-measure curtains, blinds and related products.

“When it comes to bespoke products of any type, I’d always advise that you rely on the experts to provide a quality finish and service.

Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work?

It can be a major purchase and you do not want to get it wrong. We advise on suitable fabrics and finishes, take responsibility for the correct measurements being taken and manage the making and installation of the product.

What specific expertise can you offer our readers?

Many of the Moonlight team have been with us for more than 20 years and have a wealth of experience in the trade. Therefore we can offer qualified, informed advice to our customers in store or at home. We are not fazed by specialist products like bay poles, decorative metal bay tracks and blinds. When it comes to bespoke products of any type, I’d always advise that you rely on the experts to provide a quality finish and service. We are constantly improving our workroom facilities and are looking to invest in new members wanting to join our team. It is paramount to us to retain the uniqueness of producing our bespoke made products on the premises. Trends and styles are constantly changing and it’s important that we keep abreast of that – we always have done and will always endeavour to in the future.

LEADING THE WAY AS ONE OF THE FACES OF A NEW NHS RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN, NEWLY-QUALIFIED NURSE AISHA THABET IS HELPING TO INSPIRE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE TO JOIN THE CARING PROFESSIONS. isha Thabet, a 26-year-old nurse from Sheffield, has been chosen as an ambassador for a new national nursing and allied health profession recruitment campaign. Aisha, who works as an adult nurse in the A&E department of Northern General Hospital, is one of a team of newly-qualified student nurses and allied health professionals from across the country who have been recruited as ambassadors. They will spread the word about their professions, talk about their experiences and provide first-hand advice to those thinking about doing a nursing or AHP degree. The campaign, spearheaded by Health Education England, aims to encourage more students to study for degrees in nursing and the allied health professions. It will look to increase applications through clearing 2018 and ahead of the UCAS applications deadline in January 2019. Aisha said: “I’m really proud to have been chosen as an ambassador for this exciting new campaign. It’s vital that we inspire more young people who are choosing their future career paths to study these degrees and educate them on the huge range of

WESTSIDE HEROES

CHERIE LAWRENCE’S STORY Cherie became a mental health nurse after suffering post-natal depression as a teenager. Her career took off from there, and she isn't looking back. She has just started working at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. What made you decide to become a mental health nurse? “I became a mother unexpectedly at 17 and suffered from post-natal depression both during and after my pregnancy. Unfortunately at the time there wasn’t really that much information out there, and neither my family nor I really understood the condition. My doctor couldn’t offer much help, either. “To try and understand it better I did a community mental health course and discovered a passion for the subject. I found it really fascinating. “At school, like many teenagers, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, but I had from quite a young age always admired nurses - after all, we trust our lives with them, and they’re the backbone of the NHS. “So when I discovered a passion for the subject of mental health, becoming a mental health nurse seemed like the obvious thing to do. I also felt like becoming a mental health nurse would help me be a really positive role model for my daughter.”

‘I’m really proud to have been chosen as an ambassador for this exciting new campaign. It’s vital that we inspire more young people who are choosing their future career paths to study these degrees and educate them on the huge range of opportunities that careers in nursing offer.’

opportunities that careers in nursing offer. “Not only does studying nursing make you highly employable, but in fact, I was offered a job before I’d even finished my degree, and it’s a hugely rewarding career. “As a nurse working in A&E, I get to make a real difference to people’s lives every day.” The campaign, which launched at the end of May and will run primarily across digital platforms, will put the spotlight on the benefits of these degrees and resulting careers, including a social purpose and the chance to make a difference to people’s lives, high graduate employment (94 per cent of graduate nurses find employment in a nursing job within six months of finishing their degree), the opportunity to work anywhere in the UK, and career development opportunities such as teaching, research and team leadership. For more information, visit: www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/knowaboutnursing

How did you become a mental health nurse? “I studied for my degree in mental health nursing at university, and was actually the first person in my family to go to university, which was a little scary, but I needn’t have worried as there’s so much support out there for nursing students. “I really enjoyed my degree and particularly the variety of placements I was given. I was able to get really valuable experience of working in hospital and community settings, with young people and old, including placements in forensics and working with people with functional dementia. “Nurses - particularly mental health nurses - are really in demand, so I was contacted about job opportunities all the way through my degree, and was offered a choice of four jobs

when I graduated.” “Being a nurse means that unlike quite a lot of other professions, you have a guaranteed job for life, which means I’m never going to have to worry about getting a job and providing for my daughter. “I think some people worry about the responsibility they’ll have once they’re doing the job for real, but the NHS runs an amazing preceptorship programme which helps bridge the gap between being a student nurse and a qualified nurse. They make sure you’re really supported, with regular group meetings and one to ones where you can discuss anything you need, and they make sure you have access to further training, such as safeguarding.” What is a typical working day like for you? “I get to work with a variety of people and importantly, no two days are the same. I go to work each day never knowing what to expect, which keeps things really interesting. “I work with a range of patients on the ward, some of whom are very vulnerable, and I work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, who are really supportive of each other. I think some people have a view that mental health nursing must be really tough, and whilst there are challenging times, there are also lots of lovely things that we get to do with patients as well, on a one-to-one basis, like taking them out for a walk or shopping in town. This helps give them back some normality and experience of life outside the ward.” What has been the highlight of your career so far? “I love my job, so it’s difficult to know where to start. I love the variety and how rewarding it is to see the difference we make to the lives of our patients. I also love that I have a guaranteed job for life - a lot of my friends are jealous.” What's next and what are your top tips for anyone thinking of a similar career? “I’ll be becoming a mentor in the next six months and hope to complete a masters in the next three years. I think it’s really important for students to understand how much support and help there is out there for newly qualified nurses, how varied the job is, and the opportunities that are out there for developing your career in the direction you want to, while continuing to learn new skills.” Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com 69

True taste of Thailand PATOO THAI TOOK TO THE STREETS TO FIND INSPIRATION FOR THEIR NEW MENU. CHRIS WILSON SHARES HIS FIRST IMPRESSION. hen Jariya Sancunakorn decided it was time to refresh her restaurant menu, she looked to the streets of Thailand for inspiration. A loyal Ecclesall Road clientele may love the traditional classic soups, curries, salads and stir-fries that have brought Patoo Thai much success and many awards over the last nine years, but no-one can afford to rest on their laurels. So it was that I found myself sampling new dishes such as marinated and char-grilled ‘waterfall’ pork, crispy squid and tom sap (which translates as ‘delicious’) soup. These are some of the most popular dishes served up by the street food vendors of Thailand, not only for the tourists and backpackers in the holiday hot spots, but cooked by and for Thai people. They require an abundance of fresh Thai herbs, and Jariya did not attempt to introduce them to her menu before now because it is only recently she has been able to find a suitable source of fresh herbs, flown direct from Thailand twice a week, to ensure the taste is totally authentic. Alongside those fresh herbs it is the sharpness of the marinade with much use of fresh lime juice and tamarind paste, which gives the tastebuds a thorough work-out. The

W

texture of the pork is soft, a slightly fatty cut is used to ensure it does not dry out, but the marinade ensures there are no unpleasant tough or chewy morsels to detract from the eye-popping taste. The soup stock, again sharp and sour rather than chilli-hot, has a depth of flavour worth crossing several continents for. I was being given an advance preview of these new dishes on my recent visit to Patoo Thai, but they should be appearing on the menu very soon. Even if you have tried and tested favourites, don’t miss out. Meanwhile the regular menu continues to be consistently excellent. An assorted vegetarian starter (£6.50 per person) brought a winning selection of light, crisp pastrywrapped savouries, tofu skewers and a selection of crunchy vegetables in tempurastyle batter with a mix of dipping sauces. This was quite a delicate starter but we proceeded to cover the table with a selection of main dishes and sides, all for sharing and truly playing to Patoo Thai’s strength. Pla Sam Rod (£14.95), two crispy deep fried sea bass fillets with chilli, and the classic Gaeng Dueng (£10.50), red prawn curry, was the centrepiece of our Thai feast. For crunchy texture and a sharp sour-sweet dressing, the classic Som Tum (£8.50) spicy green papaya

salad is always an essential for me, and this version is well up to scratch. With sticky rice (£3.50) and egg noodles (£4.95) to add some ballast, this was a meal to linger over in a beautiful relaxed setting with friendly, unobtrusive service. There’s a very reasonable wine list and the usual selection of chilled oriental beers but Thai food’s strong, clean flavours work very well if you are giving the old liver a rest. Jasmine tea, served in Patoo Thai’s charming trademark red and gold elephant tea pots, was the ideal accompaniment to a midweek meal that was both comfortingly familiar and a chance to try something completely different. Rejoice and refuel AS SOMEONE WHO ‘LOVES BEING AWAKE’, PHOEBE SEYMOUR FINDS HER SPIRITUAL HOME AT INSOMNIA. very good walk in the countryside deserves a visit to a decent coffee shop, and Insomnia, conveniently located in Hope Valley, provides just that. Driving to the branch at Calver is a treat in itself. It was another one of those blue-skied, scorching hot days when I visited with my partner, and I was grateful for the amazing views of the countryside and the wind whipping through the car. When we arrived, we were pleased to see an outdoor dining area – with a couple of tables in the shade. Inside, the décor is homely and contemporary, and the freshly made sandwiches and tempting cakes are waiting to be selected. Famous for their strong coffee and fittingly dedicated to caffeine addicts who ‘love being awake’, I knew I’d found my spiritual home in Insomnia. Launched in 1997, this Irish brand has mastered the art of making a good quality, hot cup of coffee – all Fair Trade of course. But with it being a hot summer’s day, I opted for the tropical flavours of the cooling Coconut, Mango and Green Ice Tea (£3.10). My partner, meanwhile, needed a much

E

bigger caffeine hit and swiftly selected a Salted Caramel Latte ICECAP (£3.40) – a blended, iced coffee that is sure to please every sweet tooth. As someone who grabs, rather than makes lunch, I don’t always make the best choices, but Insomnia have introduced a range that is both healthy and attractive, called Food For Life. The Scrummy Falafel and Sweet Potato Wrap (£4.10) is just one of many things in the range, and with its bright pink beetroot wrap it was certainly eye-catching. Lightly toasted, it was crisp on the outside and packed full of big pieces of falafel and tangy hummus on the inside. In contrast, my partner had the Fiery Mexican Ciabatta (£4.10), a toasted, seedy bap filled with succulent and spicy chicken, melted mozzarella, peppers and a BBQ chipotle sauce. As it was such a huge sandwich and the cakes were calling, he decided to save half for later. And as he chose such a huge Lemon and White Chocolate Muffin (£1.95), it was wise he did. Now fuelled by sugary treats, he was sure to breeze through his day. I however, still needed a little more help, so ordered a tall

and smooth Latte (£2.45) to go with my moist slice of Banana and Walnut Loaf (£2.10), with plenty of chunky nuts and a subtle hint of cinnamon – a delicious combination. If Insomnia’s aim was to keep us wide awake throughout the day, then mission accomplished. Weary walkers can rejoice and refuel on healthy mains, sweet treats and strong coffee – and many more things from their ever-expanding breakfast and lunch menu. EATING OUT

Connoisseurs’ curry RACHEL MARTIN DIVES INTO THE FLAVOURS OF INDIA AT BUTLERS BALTI HOUSE. heffield has long been praised for its South Asian cuisine, with a proliferation of curry houses, balti restaurants and Indian eateries. However, there are a few that have risen above the crowd and carved out a superior niche. Butlers Balti House is one of them; catering for a wide range of cultural palates, including Northern Punjab and Pakistani. Well-placed at the boundaries of Kelham Island, the West Bar district and City Centre, it has long been popular with hard-to-please corporate professionals. Nowadays, however, it is also attracting growing admiration from Sheffield’s army of self-professed curry connoisseurs. My partner and I were greeted by restaurant owner and manager Sajid Quader who had prepared for us a special tasting menu, featuring dishes from all over India, based on our personal spice preference. As we waited for our starter to arrive - the mixed starter for two (£4.95), consisting of seekh kebab, chicken tikka, tandoori lamb chops and tandoori chicken wings - fresh from the kitchen came a selection of goldenas –a-buttercup poppadoms (£0.70) and assorted pickles (£2.50). The poppadoms were crisp and light – just light enough to hold the torrents of pickle,

S

84 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

which included mango, lime, mixed pickle and mint and chilli yoghurt – and after we polished off every last morsel, our starter arrived still sizzling in the pan. The chicken tikka - the king of all tikkas in the tandoor repertoire - was moist and mouth wateringly fragrant with a lovely ghee flavour, and the tandoori chicken wings were wonderfully dainty and delicate. The accompanying seekh kebab was cooked to perfection, and the tandoori lamb chops were amply pink and tender. A reflection of the cultural diversity of the local area, Butler’s menu is a tantalising mix of influences from across the Indian subcontinent, and I indulged in “just one more mouthful” several times before being presented with our selection of bespoke curries. The Arabian lamb (£8.50) was a delight; a medium to mild curry which tosses cubes of lamb in a creamy sauce, with fresh mint, coriander and mushrooms. The lamb was beautifully tender and the accompanying flavours were expansive and rich, singling out the freshness of the ingredients. The spicier chicken handi (£8.50) counterpart was just as tasty; an aromatic curry cooked in an earthen pot and laced subtly with coriander and cardamom. It was

an explosion of pungent flavours; spicy, fresh and delicious. Accompanying the mains was a peshwari (£2.95) and keema naan (£3.25), both toasted and slathered with butter, and coconut rice (£2.95) - the best way to mop up all those aromatic savours. While all this sounds like a greedy feast; this is sharing food, proper sharing food, and blessedly light. Miles removed from those best-known belly-busting curries. Thanks to the Butlers Balti, I have yet another excuse, as if I needed one, to indulge in ‘proper’ Indian cuisine. MOTORING

No more diesel Volvo has announced the forthcoming arrival of the all-new S60 – the first Volvo ever to be built in the USA. The new S60 is the first Volvo car to be sold without a diesel offer, signalling the company’s industry-leading commitment to electrification and a long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine. There will be two turbocharged and supercharged plug-in hybrid petrol engines available in this new S60: Volvo’s T6 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that generates a combined 340hp, and the award-winning T8 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that delivers 400hp. The S60 is built on Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform and shares infotainment and safety tech with the V60, 90 series and XC60.

THERE’S A NEW OUTLOOK FOR VOLVO AND MUCH MORE IN THIS MONTH’S ROUND-UP. BY JORDAN CUTFORTH.

Road to success From its original launch in 2010, the A1 has been a huge success. Not only was it a very classy city car, but it was equally at home travelling the length and breadth of the country. Now we have an all-new Audi A1, starting with the Sportback variant (fivedoor). It is 56mm longer than the original A1 meaning there is more space on the inside. The boot capacity is now up 65 litres to 335 litres. Inside, the A1 is up-to-date with the latest Audi technology gubbins. Even the standard SE variant comes with a digital instrument binnacle. Engines available will be a 114bhp 1.0litre TFSI three-cylinder petrol, a 148hp 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with the cylinder on demand efficiency system (COD) and 2.0-litre 197hp TFSI.

Luxury addition Do you want the ultimate in luxury and refinement from BMW? Then look no further as we reveal the latest chapter in the BMW luxury game – the 8 Series Coupe. Sitting at the top of the food chain next to the I3, the 8 Series Coupe is one of BMW’s flagship models. With its sporty performance figures, emotive design language and state-of-theart luxury and technology levels, the 8 Series will certainly be a hit. There will be two models, the 840d xDrive and 850i xDrive. The 840d is a 3.0-litre, sixcylinder diesel creating 320bhp; 0-62mph takes 4.9 seconds and combined economy is calculated at 46.3mpg. The 850i is a 4.4-litre V8 petrol creating 530bhp; 0-62mph takes 3.7 seconds and 28.3mpg combined. Priced from £76,270.

CAFÉ CULTURE Since the launch of the DS3 back at the beginning of this decade, DS (formerly a part of Citroen) really took the fashionable supermini to the next level, giving MINI many sleepless nights. Taking inspiration from the Café Racer and Ace Café motorcycle culture of 1960s London, DS 3 Café Racer is a stylish new limited edition, featuring strong ‘Café Racer’ exterior branding, bi-tone body colour and a luxurious interior of Trinitario Brown Nappa watchstrap leather. Engines available are PureTech 110 S&S manual, PureTech 110 S&S EAT6 automatic and PureTech 130 S&S 6-speed manual. Priced from £21,305. Only 150 units will be built. 90 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

Speed machine PHOEBE SEYMOUR SUCCUMBS TO THE SEDUCTIVE CHARMS OF THE PORSCHE 911... A CAR THAT DOESN’T HAVE TO TRY TOO HARD. lip behind the wheel of a Porsche and you become a part of the history of one of the most iconic motor cars in the world. You don’t even have to be a sports car fanatic to feel the Porsche effect; I have been known to make the odd negative character judgement on any Tom, Dick or Harriet who whizzes past me in a speed machine with the engine on full roar. But with Paul Nicholson from Silverleaf Sports & Prestige Cars as my guide, I found myself being totally won over by the sleek beauty and, yes, the raw power of the vehicle bearing the instantly recognisable black horse logo. “Whereas other sports cars such as Lamborghinis are very, ‘look at me’, Porsches get noticed without even trying,” said Paul. “Its main purpose is to be fast, but it manages to show off without being in your face.” Silverleaf, on Newhall Road, a short drive from Meadowhall, pride themselves on handpicking the best high-end cars around. With 25 cars in stock at any one time, their ethos is quality not quantity. I’d come to test drive the Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS. This model (991.2) launched last year, but with an average waiting list of 12 months, it’s rare to find one ready to purchase and drive away on the same day. Once behind the wheel, Paul started to point out all the features. First things first, we lowered the roof. Returning to the controls, I was pleased to see that although it was a modern car that takes advantage of all the usual technology, such as sat nav, a rear camera and parking sensors, it has the kind of simple buttons you’d expect from a classic car. It even keeps the traditional key (though not the actual key) to start the engine. The automatic versus manual debate rages

S

96 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com

on, but I’m in agreement with the former group, as are Porsche. With the gears taken care of, all that’s left is to hit the road and enjoy the drive. Reaching a nice stretch of the M1, I put my foot down to overtake a slow lorry and darted into the fast lane. The car was so responsive, it caught me off guard when I was pinned back in my seat. Combined with the satisfying roar of the engine, I felt my heart race – this could get addictive. And if you really want to show off to your friends, there’s a Sports Chrono (stop watch) on the dashboard so you can record your best laps. Of course, there are times when you need to be more considerate (eg, residential roads at night), and that’s where the switchable

sports exhaust button (helpfully labelled with a picture of an exhaust) comes in. This button quietens the exhaust so you can be seen and not heard. It can take a while to get used to a new car, but by the time I was heading back to Silverleaf, driving the Porsche 911 felt natural. Put simply, this car is effortlessly cool. And as I whizzed past the traffic, I’m pretty sure a few people thought I was showing off – but it’s different when it’s you behind the wheel. Purchase the Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS for £124,950 from Silverleaf Sports & Prestige Cars. To find out more and to book a test drive, call sales on 0114 243 5949 or visit www.silverleafcars.co.uk.

R is for just right PHOEBE SEYMOUR GETS HER HANDS ON THE HOT HONDA CIVIC TYPE R – A FAMILY HATCHBACK WITH THE SOUL OF A RACER. hen deciding on a new family car, one that has broken the record for the fastest time on the legendary Nürburgring racetrack in Germany doesn’t sound like something that would top your wish list, but then there’s more to the Honda Civic Type R than meets the eye. There’s no denying that the 2017 Type R is first and foremost a high performance sports car, but it has a softer side too. With three driving modes to choose from, this vehicle can change the way it reacts to suit your driving style – and, with plenty of room in the back, it’s suitable for a range of purposes. I went to Stoneacre’s Honda and Mitsubishi showroom in Chesterfield to find out more. “It’s a car for the driving enthusiast, who has a family,” says sales manager Dan Wheeldon. “It’s as close to a race car as you can get, but equally, it’s a practical car you can take to do the shopping.” As I went out to the forecourt to have a look at the test car, I could see what he meant. It had all the features you’d expect from a sports car, including a spoiler, three exhaust pipes and a red and black rally car-style interior. Yet, it was a four-door with comfortable back seats and a spacious boot. Next it was time to take it for a spin. Sitting behind the wheel, I liked how everything was within easy reach. The gear box was higher than in your

W

average car and the informative dashboard tells you everything you need to know (even how to start the car), so you can keep your eyes looking forward. All Type R cars are manual and petrolfuelled, and have six gears for when you really want to push it to the limit. The default mode you always start in is Sport. This increases the throttle response and softens the damper (shock absorber) so you can feel the speed, but can take corners with ease. Once I’d got out onto a straight country road, I relished hearing the roar of the engine as I put my foot down and reached an easy 70 mph. After all that excitement, I tried out Comfort Mode, which lightens the throttle response. Suddenly, all the lumps and bumps of the road were softened and the engine was

much quieter. A baby could certainly sleep soundly in the back – even when you reach the higher speeds. Finally, R Mode provides a maximum throttle response and hard damper for greater tyre contact, providing a stronger grip on the road as you move up through the gears. This mode had all the power of Sport Mode, but all the smoothness and precision of Comfort. I only wish I had a race track to really put this mode to the test. As Dan had promised, The Honda Civic was just as good at the more practical things. Being a fairly compact and agile car, I effortlessly slipped past cars on the tighter country and residential roads, and parking was made all the simpler with the rear view camera and parking sensors. I whizzed back to Stoneacre, satisfied that the Type R had delivered on its promises. It manages to be both an exciting car for a fun drive, and a practical vehicle, comfortable enough to take the family on excursions. Prices for the Honda Civic Type R start from £31,495 and the GT version is from £33,495. Call Stoneacre Chesterfield Honda & Mitsubishi on 01246 641135 to find out more and to book a test drive.
