New lease of life BACK ON TRACK: FROM STATION HOTEL TO LUXURY NEW HOMES, IT’S ALL CHANGE FOR THE BEAUCHIEF HOTEL. he Beauchief Hotel is one of Sheffield’s most iconic buildings, steeped in history and holding fond memories for many of the city’s residents. Originally built in 1900 as the Abbeydale Station Hotel, the building served travellers passing through the local railway station. The station sat on the Sheffield to London line, serving Beauchief and Woodseats and providing excellent links to the surrounding areas, including Chesterfield. It went through numerous name changes and became the Beauchief Station in 1914 before eventually closing in 1961. During its early days the hotel became a mainstay in Sheffield and the classic Victorian building became a popular watering hole for steel merchants travelling between factories in London and Sheffield. Throughout the years, many different proprietors occupied the Beauchief with varying degrees of success. A particular high point took place during the 1980s and 90s, when the hotel enjoyed a renewed popularity under French general manager, Michel Limon and his wife, Edwige. It became home to the well-loved Michel’s Bar that was cited by local residents as one of the trendiest spots in Sheffield at the time. Under Michel’s management the hotel was extended to add 40 additional rooms – a significant expansion which led to a great deal of weddings, christenings, and parties being hosted at the venue. Following the demise of former operators Kenwright Investments Ltd. the hotel was reopened in April 2012 by BrewKitchen – a
T
joint venture between Richard Smith’s restaurant group and Thornbridge Brewery – who aimed to put the Beauchief back on the map as a premier destination in Sheffield. BrewKitchen ran the Beauchief for three years until New Year’s Eve 2015, when the hotel closed its doors once more citing high repair costs as the reason behind their decision. Now, Redbrik Estate Agents are working with developers Brantingham Homes Ltd. to bring new life to the former hotel by building much-needed housing on the site. The new homes will be set within a gated entrance that epitomises the site branding – a true statement in luxury. The hotel will be sympathetically Picture (right): Sheffield Archives and Local Studies Library/ www.picturesheffield.com
transformed into six fabulous apartments retaining many of the fabulous original features. The original property will be accompanied by another new build apartment scheme to the rear, containing 12 two-bed flats that will take advantage of the leafy location overlooking the River Sheaf. The site will also include 12 four and five bed new detached family homes, all built to the highest specification. Each of the layouts has been designed to meet the demands of modern family life with beautiful open plan lounges and kitchens with bi-fold doors leading out to an entertaining area and grand separate lounges and a playroom for children. The master bedrooms will have en-suite shower rooms and dressing rooms and each home will include stunning designer bathrooms. The houses will be kept warm with underfloor heating and each property will come with landscaped gardens and garaging. If any of these properties are of interest to you, please register your details early with Redbrik Estate Agents on 0114 399 0567. oger Lownsborough set up his first kitchen business 40 years ago. 26 years later he retired. Recently he decided to buy a new kitchen... this is his story. “I’ve supplied a few kitchens in my time, so who would I go to when I wanted a new kitchen? To be fair there was quite a choice for me, but in the end I decided to speak to Dawn Rayner who had worked closely with me for many years, and who had most recently joined her daughterin-law, Mary Major, in a new kitchen venture, Designer Kitchen Direct (DKD) on Junction Road, in Sheffield. Mary is a qualified designer, and I purposely resisted the temptation to interfere with what she suggested. I dare say there was a little anxiety on both parts to begin with, but I am pleased to say that Mary designed the kitchen and made her recommendations in a completely independent and professional manner, which actually made it easier for me to stick my oar in where I felt it
R
Designer Kitchen Direct
THE DKD DIFFERENCE:
was needed. More on budget than design, as it turned out! I have always stuck to quality of product, and DKD did not disappoint. The product is excellent and the optional internal fittings are of a superb standard. It was an added bonus that the fitter had also worked for me previously, and the tiler’s work was first class. It’s clear time has moved on and certainly in this case kitchen design and the installation process, which can occasionally be a lengthy nightmare, has moved on as well. Using the latest hi-tech equipment and with lessons learned from the past, delivering a first class service is not just an option. Everyone, including the granite suppliers, and the delivery drivers who were involved were nothing less than polite and helpful. So, that’s where I went, DKD. Wherever you are thinking of going why not swing by DKD first, tell them Roger Lownsbrough sent you.”

Put your plan into action THINKING ABOUT EQUITY RELEASE? WE SPEAK TO SIMON CHALK, OF LATERLIVING NOW!, ABOUT THE BEST WAY FORWARD.
aterliving now! is the leading local specialist equity release adviser, helping you to release the money tied up in your home so you can enjoy it now. Equity release is becoming increasingly popular as people are living longer and tend to store up vast sums of housing wealth. Simon Chalk, director of Laterliving now! has specialised in equity release as a Laterliving Planner for over 15 years. His job is to help clients decide if this service is right for them, before putting a plan in action that is as simple and straightforward as possible. Here, he answers some of his clients most frequently asked questions.
It’s your money so you can pretty much use it as you wish. Most people want to do simple things like repaying mortgages and debts, improving homes and lifestyle, or gifting to family, which are all acceptable reasons to lenders. It’s very important to me, as your adviser, that I consider your reasons for releasing equity to be safe. If I’m unhappy or uncomfortable with your plans I will tell you and may suggest that you do not proceed with your application. My success is built on professional reputation and integrity. I will always have your best interests at heart.
How much money can I release?
How long does it take to receive my money?
This is determined by the age of the youngest borrower. Unlike normal mortgages, the older you are, the more you can have. For example, a 55-year-old borrower may currently raise up to 25 per cent of their property’s value, whereas someone in their 80s may be able to raise up to 54 per cent. Some providers offer larger sums to those with certain medical conditions, past health issues and lifestyle factors such as smoking. You don’t have to undergo any medical examination and they will meet any cost of obtaining medical records with your consent.
From application to completion, it typically takes around four weeks for a straightforward case, with applications under a power of attorney taking up to six to eight weeks.
That depends on what you compare it with! There isn’t another form of borrowing that offers no monthly repayments and that only needs to be repaid after you’ve died. At present, clients are enjoying record low fixedfor-life interest rates, so it is a good time to consider releasing equity.
Can I lose my home if I take out equity release?
Have other questions? Then you are most welcome to call or visit our website to make an enquiry.
L
Can I do what I like with the equity release money?
No. I only recommend plans from providers that are members of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and adopt the ERC’s rules and guidance. The ERC’s rules state that a provider must allow you to remain in your own home until the last borrower dies or moves into long-term care.
Again, a very definite NO! When your home is eventually sold, the loan plus any accrued interest will be repaid from the sale proceeds with the remaining funds belonging to you – or your estate in the event of the death of the last borrower. In the extremely unlikely event of the property selling for less than the outstanding loan balance, then the lender writes-off the excess under the ‘no-negative equity guarantee’ offered under the Equity Release Council’s rules. Is equity release expensive?

REGULAR MAINTENANCE WILL PROTECT YOUR HOME – JUST ASK MARTIN-BROOKS ROOFING, WHO OFFER A RANGE OF DOMESTIC ROOFING SERVICES.
A new dry ridge system fitted to an existing roof
Love your roof for lasting protection t’s a stormy winter night, the wind is slamming hail against your window, when suddenly you hear a crash… You jump out of bed to the sound of broken tiles skittering down your roof and are greeted by bricks and mortar in your front garden and a gaping hole where your chimney once stood. Unfortunately, this is an all too familiar story at this time of year, when our homes take a battering from the elements. High winds, snow, ice and torrential rain can all make an appearance in February – sometimes together – and if your roof is showing signs of weakness, Mother Nature will take advantage. “This time last year we were called to a house in Crosspool at which the owner was injured when a felt roof blew off, bringing bricks and ridge tiles with it. She made a full recovery, but it could have been much worse,” says Andrew Wheadon, an estimator at

Sheffield roofing specialists, Martin-Brooks. “The property had a large dormer window with a chimney protruding through a flat roof. There must have been loose elements in its construction that had gone unnoticed and as a result, we had to re-felt the entire area and reinstate the chimney and ridge tiles.” Martin-Brooks has the capacity to react quickly to emergency calls and keeps standard roofing materials in stock, ensuring there is no delay in carrying out domestic repairs. One of the most common enquiries the firm receives concerns loose ridge tiles, which are relatively easy to spot from the ground. Andrew added: “Traditionally ridges and hips were fixed on a bed of mortar that deteriorates over time. If they come loose, they can cause significant damage to other areas of the roof that were otherwise sound. “A couple of years ago, new building regulations were implemented that mean we now have to use dry ridge systems on the

majority of homes. Mechanical clips hold the tiles in place that are far more secure than mortar and maintenance-free. Not many customers are aware of the changes, but are pleased with the aesthetics and the peace of mind the technique provides.” Regular maintenance not only prevents storm damage to your own roof, but also protects the homes and people around you. After installing a new roof on a semidetached property in Greenhill, MartinBrooks was called again by the homeowner when the neighbour’s chimney cowl blew off and broke one of her tiles. Due to the nature of the site, the roof couldn’t be accessed without scaffolding, turning a relatively simple fix into an insurance claim for hundreds of pounds. Thankfully, not all roof repairs are costly nightmares. One landlord was very pleased to receive a call informing him the problem with his gutters was nothing more than a hefty blockage. Martin-Brooks simply cleaned them out and the issue was resolved. To find out more about the firm’s wide range of domestic roofing services, telephone 0114 244 7720 or visit www.martin-brooks.co.uk and complete the online enquiry form. WEDDINGS
When romance comes alive... IT’S THE MOST MAGICAL TIME – AND PERFECT FOR CELEBRATING YOUR BIG DAY. HANNAH SANDERS LOOKS AT HOW YOU CAN MAKE YOUR WINTER WEDDING ONE TO REMEMBER. lthough many couples choose to say ‘I do’ in the spring and summer months, there is something utterly magical about a winter wedding. Often described as the most romantic season, winter weddings are becoming increasingly popular, with shimmering snowflakes (if you’re lucky!), champagne-hues and twinkling lights adorning the mantles, not to mention a beautiful backdrop for memorable photography. So, if you’ve always wanted to have a winter wonderland fairytale wedding, here are some ideas to help you embrace the cold and create the perfect day.
A
WEDDINGS
Colour schemes Avoid the classic red and greens and opt for a silver, white and baby blue theme. Why not decorate in rich, warm tones of berry red, burgundy or gold or add extra wintery romance with lots of natural greenery. Textures are also important in the colder months, so consider using velvets or satins.
CAKE Winter wedding cakes are not only about style and sophistication, but there needs to be an element of warmth and comfort, and of course it goes without saying that it should be a showstopper. If you want to add a rustic touch, choose the popular ‘naked cakes’ and decorate with berries, pine cones and greenery. You could even tie some cinnamon around the bottom layer to give it that festive scent. Add a boho element with a natural colour palette and charming deer decorations – don’t forget to add that bit of sparkle with a dusting of gold glitter. If you are wanting to go for simplicity, opt for a three-tier cake decorated in ivy icing, add a Mr & Mrs topper to the top in your colour scheme and create a waterfall of seasonal blooms down the side.
Bride & Groom wear There’s a lot to consider when planning any wedding, but winter weddings come with their own unique challenges and considerations – especially the temperature. Staying warm is essential as nobody likes to see red noses or blue hands so picking the right accessories to keep you cosy is key. For the bride, the most obvious option to add some extra warmth to your outfit is sleeves. Full length, three-quarter or short sleeves add that bit of coverage to keep the chills away. Alternatively, pair your dress with faux fur throws, shawls or brightly glittering cardigans to add some sparkle to your day. When it comes to the groom’s attire, it is still important for him to look elegant while of course keeping warm. Plaid shirts paired with bow ties are stylish and simple, and for those outside photographs add a woollen jumper. If you want to opt for something a little smarter, have a tweed or velvet suit. Don’t forget footwear either. Boots for both parties can be a tasteful (and practical) shoe option for winter weddings.
Venue The venue is one of the most important aspects of your big day, so it’s key to take your time and choose the place that is right for you both. Unless you want to provide your guests with parkas and furry mittens, getting married in the winter months means an indoor wedding. If you are settled on a true winter wonderland, visit castles and stately homes, which will be an ideal setting for an unforgettable wedding. If you want something more traditional, choose your local church for the ceremony followed by a reception at a favourite hotel or, if you are set on an outdoor wedding perhaps in a barn, make sure it is well insulated and be prepared to have lots of heaters. If you’re opting for a registry office make sure you know where you are going for photographs, and if this is outside then supply your guests with brollies, scarves, hats, gloves and even blankets.
Bridesmaids & Groomsmen Don’t forget to keep your wedding party warm too, with cover-ups for the bridesmaids and scarves for the groomsmen. For the dresses, go for a charcoal grey, burgundy red or if you are feeling festive opt for sequin or glitter dresses. Keep it simple with the groomsmen by choosing a white shirt and pairing it with a coloured tie.
WINTER WEDDING TIPS: • If possible have just one venue • Allow extra travel time • Have a coat check at the reception • Keep guests warm by supplying blankets and hand-warmers
• Bring umbrellas in case of rain • Have wellies on standby • Make sure you adjust your photography schedule as it gets darker earlier in winter
Favours Give out small packages of chocolatecovered cranberries, roasted chestnuts or salted caramel toffee. You could even create mini hot chocolate mixes, soy candles or bake gingerbread cookies.
Décor Decorations set the tone for the entire day, so you need to be sure that you love the décor at both the ceremony and reception. Make use of pine cones by turning them into a placecard holder, garland or add some gold spray and use them as part of a table centrepiece or try spray-painted wine bottles paired with pillar candles to create a cosy, inexpensive wedding look. Another great way to add some colour to your venue is through chair decorations. Use brightly coloured ribbon to add bows to the chairs, create dainty wreaths or even glitter cut outs of simple stars to add a touch of elegance. Keep your guests toasty with a hot beverage bar, where they can help themselves to hot chocolate, mulled wine or hot apple cider. Decorate your drink station with DIY signs and simple foliage.

Holiday? Snow problem PLANNING A FAMILY GETAWAY THIS HALF-TERM? PHOEBE SEYMOUR LOOKS AT IDEAL FAMILY BREAKS, BOTH AT HOME AND ABROAD. t this time of year, when the skies are grey and the temperatures are low, nothing lifts the spirits more than having a holiday to look forward to. And with half-term coming up in February, now is the perfect time to plan a family getaway. When it comes to winter holidays, we tend to fall into two camps – those who embrace the beautiful yet chilly outdoors, and those who wish to escape to much sunnier climes. With this in mind, we’ve rounded up every kind of winter holiday, from British breaks, to exotic getaways.

SKIING HOLIDAYS Enjoy the seasonal snow and get the whole family active with a skiing holiday. Significantly heavy snowfall in January has meant that now is a great time to hit the resorts in the French and Austrian Alps. Avoriaz is a fantastic destination for families as it is safe, convenient and has the highest and most snow-sure slopes in the Portes du Soleil area. Childcare is also provided at the Village des Enfants in the centre of the resort. Obergurgl in Austria is another great option as it is picturesque and has easier slopes for beginners. Children from as young as three can join the Bobo Skiclub or the indoor Bobo Kindergarten. If you are looking to travel further afield, Tremblant in the French-speaking area of Canada is a purposebuilt village lined with cobbled streets and vibrantlycoloured buildings designed in the old Québec style. It is also home to a highly-rated ski school for children. Closer to home, Scotland currently has five operational resorts. Glencoe (www.glencoemountain.co.uk) has the best snow cover and is an area of outstanding beauty. Skiing lessons are available for children as young as five, while experienced skiers can enjoy the longest and the steepest ski run in Scotland. Start planning your skiing holiday at www.crystalski.co.uk.

MAIN PICTURE: The volcanic mountains of Gros and Petit Piton in St Lucia INSET: Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote
Sunny winter holidays Say goodbye to your winter blues with a holiday in a much warmer part of the world. The Canary Islands are within easy reach with temperatures in the low 20s, while the Caribbean is at its hottest and driest right now. When it comes to the Canaries, Lanzarote is a good all-rounder, with plenty of family facilities in the Los Pocillos area, close to the popular Puerto del Carmen resort. Inland, Timanfaya National Park offers dramatic landscapes for an action-packed week. Over in the Caribbean, St Lucia is home to some of the world’s most gorgeous beaches, including the golden strip of Anse Chastanet, while volcanic mountains Gros and Petit Piton are perfect for hiking and picture opportunities. The Bay Gardens Beach Club Resort is family-friendly and is next to Reduit Beach. Whether you stay on the strip in South Beach, or at a child-friendly resort nearby, there are plenty of fantastic restaurants and a lively atmosphere in Miami. The Fontainebleau offers one of the most luxurious spas in town, an interactive children’s water-play area and a Kids Camp. Find your perfect winter sun holiday at www.lastminute.com.
“When it comes to the Canaries, Lanzarote is a good all-rounder, with plenty of family facilities in the Los Pocillos area, close to the popular Puerto del Carmen resort.” Great British holidays Appreciate the beaches, forests and greenery all around us, by packing up the car and taking a trip to a popular UK holiday destination. Forest Holidays (www.forestholidays.co.uk) offer luxurious cabins in ten idyllic locations including nearby Sherwood Forest, Blackwood Forest in the south and Ardgarten Argyll in Scotland. Each cabin includes a hot tub and a Forest range of activities from cycling and canoeing to Forest Holidays Ranger activities for kids. It may be too cold to paddle, but there is still plenty to do in the winter months at some of Britain’s favourite seaside towns. A Swanage, trip to one of Whitby’s (www.visitwhitby.com) museums such Dorset as the Captain Cook Museum and a hot chocolate in one of the town’s many tearooms is sure to keep the troop happy. Book a holiday cottage off one of the winding gothic streets or a short drive away in the idyllic Robin Hood’s Bay. Over in Blackpool, donkey rides may be off the table, but thrill seekers will be pleased to hear that the Blackpool Pleasure Beach (www.blackpoolpleasurebeach.com) is open in February, along with Nickelodeon Land for younger children. Further down in Dorset (www.visit-dorset.com), you will find two more traditional seaside towns – Swanage and Weymouth. Wrap up warm and go fossil hunting on Chesil Beach or enjoy an indoor activity such as the Sealife Centre in Weymouth if it’s a rainy day. In Cornwall (www.visitcornwall.com) now may not be the time to sunbathe on one of St Ives white beaches, but its narrow winding streets lined with fisherman’s cottages are lovely to take a stroll down, while indoor activities feature historic houses, castles, museums and World Heritage Sites.
STAYCATIONS Alternatively, why not stay home and take a few daytrips to the many amazing museums and galleries right on our doorstep? Our region has a wealth of attractions, from Yorkshire Wildlife Park (www.yorkshirewildlifepark.com) in Doncaster, to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (www.ysp.org.uk) in Leeds, which is great for walkers and art-lovers alike. York meanwhile, offers everything from a fantastic shopping experience with its famous Shamble Markets and quaint boutiques, and museums such as the Jorvik Viking Centre (www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk) for history buffs and York’s Chocolate Story (www.yorkschocolatestory.com) for sweet tooths. Closer to home is the Kelham Island Museum, while Weston Park and the Millennium Gallery have a mix of permanent and temporary exhibitions. Check out Discovery Day on 20, 21 or 22 February and Nature Detectives on 17 February this half-term at Weston Park (www.museums-sheffield.org.uk).

YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR
Last year’s winner Dave Cockerill collects his award from Howard Middleton (left) and Jonathan Coulthard from My Fathers Heart (right)
Cooking for their futures
Dave Cockerill (Tickled Trout)
DO YOU KNOW A YOUNG CHEF DESTINED FOR THE TOP? WE’RE ON THE LOOK-OUT FOR CATERING’S NEXT BRIGHT YOUNG THING AND WILL BE HOSTING A SHOWROOM SHOWDOWN AT MY FATHERS HEART. alling all head chefs and restaurateurs... do you have a bright spark working in your kitchen who is shaping up to be an outstanding chef of the future? If you do, now’s the time to shout about it, because Westside and My Fathers Heart are staging a fantastic competition to find the Young Chef of the Year 2018. The competition is open to all restaurants in the Sheffield and North Derbyshire region and all entries must be under the age of 25 on 1 June 2018.

Four finalists will be invited to join us for a MasterChef-style cooking competition in the state-of-the-art kitchens at My Fathers Heart on Saturday 12 May. That’s their opportunity to create their signature main course, which will be judged by a panel of culinary experts. My Fathers Heart, designers and makers of the region’s finest bespoke, handmade kitchens, bedrooms and furniture, regularly host glamorous events in their award-winning showroom. It proved to be the perfect venue to stage our inaugural Young Chef of the Year event in 2017.
YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR
The cream of the region’s young culinary talent came together and really wowed the judges with some first rate, inventive virtuoso cooking. Last year’s winner was Dave Cockerill of The Tickled Trout in Barlow. He was nominated by owner/chef Chris Mapp and impressed the judges with a stunning dish of lemon baked halibut in a gruyere crust with an artichoke purée, Jersey Royal potatoes, samphire, baby leaves, morel mushrooms and seasonal capers with a shallot, halibut and chicken vinegar. Dave is obviously destined for great things and now we are looking for a worthy successor to fly the flag for the region’s budding culinary talent. The Westside/My Fathers Heart Young Chef of the Year competition is a great opportunity to shine a light on the next generation of kitchen superstars. We’re looking forward to seeing what the best young talent out there has to offer, and giving all four finalists, a boost by placing them in the spotlight. The results will be announced at the Westside Restaurant Awards on Monday 5 June 2018, an event which is fast becoming the Oscars of the local restaurant scene. So now it’s down to the head chefs and restaurateurs across the region to nominate their young kitchen stars for this prestigious event. Stephen Delmar (Brocco on the Park)
Last year’s judges (L-R): Mick Burke, Natasha Holland, Stefan Rose and John Murphy
“The cream of the region’s young culinary talent came together and really wowed the judges with some first rate, inventive virtuoso cooking.” We’ll be contacting restaurants across the region in the next few weeks, reminding head chefs and restaurateurs to get involved. But don’t wait to be invited. If you employ a bright young chef with the talent and drive to reach the top, let us know. Incidentally, last year’s shortlist of talented young kitchen stars was all-male. We know there are some fantastic female chefs out there so please help us to put them in the spotlight in 2018.
YOUNG CHEF OF THE YEAR 2018 Westside and My Fathers Heart are joining forces to search for the region’s finest culinary talent. If you’re a head chef or restaurateur now’s the chance to tell the world about the bright young stars cooking fabulous food in your kitchens. All entries must be under 25 years of age on 1 June 2018 To nominate your Young Chef please contact Westside managing editor Chris Wilson on chris.wilson@rmcmedia.co.uk

EATING OUT
Full of surprises THERE’S MUCH MORE TO THE MAYNARD THAN WEDDINGS AND SUNDAY LUNCHES, WRITES A SUITABLY IMPRESSED CHRIS WILSON. y favourite thing about dinner at The Maynard, in a meal packed with superlative surprises, wasn’t even on the menu. So when you go (as you really should) just hope that chef ’s savoury appetiser is beetroot and goats’ cheese cheesecake, with a crisp savoury crumb base and caramelised red onion chutney. Two bites and it was gone but oh boy, what a joy. I can’t remember when I last enjoyed a tastier morsel... get a bigger version of it on the menu now. It was a few years since I’d been to The Maynard but I thought I knew it pretty well; a classic Derbyshire wedding venue in a gorgeous setting that also does a very reliable Sunday lunch. All this is true of course, and may lead you to believe that a venue that excels in mass catering for large wedding parties may lack a touch of finesse when it comes to being rated a stand-alone restaurant. Well, you can forget about that. From the moment we stepped into the lounge for a relaxing drink in front of the roaring log fire, everything was first rate and a match for anything I’ve tasted in Derbyshire’s finer dining establishments in recent years. Four delicious warmed bread rolls (tomato, treacle, herb and white) with soft salted butter were waiting when we took our seats in the attractive dining room, which really makes the most of those splendid views.

For starters my crab arancini (£6.95) was soft and savoury with a lovely crisp shell, served with a pleasingly sharp orange and watercress salad. My companion’s pan-seared fillet of sea bass (£7.55) was perfectly cooked with crispy skin and a winning accompaniment of sweet-sour jam, pickled cucumber, nori powder, miso mayonnaise and crispy seaweed. While we ate from the a la carte menu it’s worth pointing out there’s also a menu of pub classics if you fancy something more hearty and less cheffy. My main course of venison loin (£26.95) was velvety soft, perfectly pink and expertly seasoned. An accompaniment of soy glazed beet, caramelised turnip purée, buttered kale, and redcurrant jus made every mouthful a joy. Across the table, pan-seared duck breast (£27.50) scored just as highly. Again the meat was cooked with precision and the dazzling accompaniments of confit duck leg bon bon, pickled blood orange, orange gel, fondant potato, tender stem broccoli and mustard jus, lifted this complex plateful into the highest category. A strawberry macaroon led us gently into the dessert zone and more good stuff. From the classy a la carte menu Tastes of Honey (£7.25) brought a gorgeous array of tastes and textures with smoked honey ice cream, honey and vanilla lava sponge, salted honey caramel, ricotta, granola and truffle honey.
There is also a separate ice cream menu with no less than 14 flavours to choose from. This appealed to my inner child but one scoop each of marmalade, rum and raisin and mint choc chip (£6.50) was so impressive, especially the burnt orange tang of the former, it would be wrong to write it off as being simply for kids. There’s a great wine list including some lovely selections by the glass, including a zingy Chilean Sauvignon Blanc (£6.75 large glass) and a top notch Argentinian Malbec (£7.80). With excellent espressos served with salted caramel bonbons and Turkish delight, this was a meal to remember at a Derbyshire institution that definitely isn’t resting on its laurels. Drive each other up the wall For the active types, or those who simply want to try something new, head to the nearest indoor climbing wall (www.climbingworks.com). Once you’ve mastered the technique, and if you enjoy a little friendly competition, race each other to the top. For those who are more experienced, take a trip out to the Peak District to do some outdoor bouldering. Finish the afternoon off with a picnic nestled in the hills (if it’s warm enough), or simply head to the nearest pub.
VALENTINE’S DAY
GET TRAPPED IN THE ROOM, AND TRY AND BREAK OUT OF IT Solving clues and finding your way out of a room is becoming a popular group activity. So grab the couples that like a challenge and take on some of Sheffield’s escape rooms (www.thegreatesapegame.co.uk). No matter if you win or lose, it’s sure to be fun for all involved and you can finish the night with pizza and beers.
Create something together
Get competitive If you and your partner are up for some friendly competition, then why not shoot some pool, play a round of crazy golf or even a game of ping-pong? If these aren’t up your alley, then try The Treehouse, board game café (www.treehousessheffield.com) where you can play some classics games like Cluedo or monopoly while enjoying a meal and of course a tipple or two.
Scour the internet, head to the craft store for supplies, and spend a day crafting projects for your home or each other. It’s a perfect way to let your creativity shine, and you’ll have some meaningful home décor to add to your walls.
Staycation Play tourist in your own town. Make a list of activities and plan to visit some of the local sites that perhaps you’ve been putting off or simply haven’t been to for a while. If you feel like splurging, make a reservation at a hotel you’ve always wanted to spend the night in.
GO SCAVENGER HUNTING If you are feeling ambitions, then have a go at planning a scavenger hunt. Leave notes or gifts hidden away at places that you went to on special dates, or that you both share a significant memory of. It will be a great trip down memory lane as well as a fun-filled activity that’s sure to give your partner a challenge.
Cocktail masterclass Who doesn’t love a good cocktail? This Valentine’s Day book yourselves onto a cocktail masterclass and learn how to create some of your favourite concoctions – or even invent your own.
HAVE THE PURR-FECT DATE If your partner has a soft spot for a furry feline friend, then what better way to show you care then by organising a trip to Tabby Teas cat café? This cat haven, near the city centre, is home to 12 rescue cats and provides the perfect relaxing environment to while away the afternoon. Head over to their website (www.tabbyteas.co.uk) to book online. Treat your other half to a day filled with purr-licious food and drink while enjoying the company of not one, or two but a room filled with your favourite four-legged pals.
Cookery class If you both love cooking and want to learn a new skill, why not book yourselves in for a cookery class this Valentine’s Day? It’s a great way to expand your palates and you can learn anything from bread making and authentic Indian or Thai cooking right through to chocolate making. Take away everything you’ve learnt and whip up your partner a meal to remember.
Visit a museum/gallery Take advantage of the Steel City’s history. Get lost in the hallways of one of Yorkshire’s many museums or galleries, and soak in some culture, all while learning about both traditional and modern unique paintings and sculptures. There’s plenty to choose from including Kelham Island Museum, Millennium Galleries, National Emergency Services Museum, Weston Park and if you fancya bit of a drive head to Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

As we began to discuss the possibility of working together on a book, their emphasis on quality and a professional approach to layout and design in a book coincided with my own, and the end-product is exactly what I had hoped for.”

YOUNGSTERS CHAY AND FALLON RAISE THOUSANDS TO HELP LUNG DISEASE SUFFERERS LIKE THEIR GRANDAD, GORDON. In the swim: Fallon, Gordon and Chay
LITTLE SUPERSTARS he young grandchildren of a lung disease patient were so touched by the story of his care, that they raised thousands of pounds for the Sheffield Hospitals Charity backed group which has supported him. Gordon Harrison, aged 60, from Dronfield, was diagnosed with chronic and progressive lung disease: Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) five years ago, leaving him breathless and relying on a home oxygen supply. His grandchildren, Chay (nine) and Fallon (six) raised £2,000 for Sheffield Hospitals Charity to help fund the Sheffield Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Support Group, which has supported Gordon and his wife Lynn throughout his diagnosis and care. Gordon said: “At the start of my diagnosis my symptoms were easily manageable, but over time I have become more and more breathless, and I’m now on a waiting list for a lung transplant. “The seriousness of the illness, its progressive nature and my long term prognosis has required lots of soul searching and management. I could not have done any of these things without the support of my wife Lynn, our family, our network of friends and the Sheffield Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Support Group. “The group was formed so that patients can meet up together outside the hospital environment and share experiences of coping and living with the disease. It is focussed on mutual support, learning and research. It ensures that everyone remains

positive and can maintain the best quality of life - and it works. “I could not be more proud of Chay and Fallon. The idea of doing something to help me and the support group was exclusively theirs. The last length of their epic swim marked a seminal moment for our family and one which we will never forget.” Chay and Fallon’s mum, Cheryl, said: “The Sheffield ILD Support Group has been a great help to Gordon and my mum. It’s really important to have the opportunity to chat with other people who are, or have been, in a similar situation to yourself and who can provide practical advice and answer those difficult questions that only people who’ve been there can do. “The kids decided to do a sponsored swim to try and raise money for their Grandad as they wanted to help him get better. They are both extremely close to Gordon and look up to him a great deal. We all share days out and holidays together. “Chay swam 2km and Fallon swam 1.6km – the equivalent of 144 lengths. Neither of them had done anywhere near this distance before, we were amazed. They are little superstars and we’re so very proud of them.” As well as Chay and Fallon’s fundraising, Jonathan Hardwick at Ryehill Wealth Management, who is Gordon’s financial advisor, donated a further £2,000, and an extra £1,000 from other sources brought the total to £5,000. To donate to help improve the lives of people with lung diseases, visit www.sheffieldhospitalscharity.org.uk/donate

WE’RE ON THE HUNT FOR HEROES Never mind Superman or Wonder Woman... Westside is on the look-out for some real life local heroes. We know there are lots of people out there who dedicate a huge part of their lives to making the world a better place for others. We’re taking about people like John Burkhill (far right), our very own prampushing, wig-wearing, fund-raising legend. He’s the Man with the Pram, who has dedicated his life to raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Quite rightly, John has become an instantly recognisable and widely praised local personality because of his tireless efforts to improve the lives of others. But we know there are many more inspirational characters out there whose stories deserve to be shared. That’s why Westside is searching for the heroes and heroines who are really making a difference in our community. Do you know someone who is going that extra mile to raise funds for a good cause or make a difference in their community? PAY EQUALITY IS A HOT TOPIC AT THE MOMENT. JENNIFER WALKER OF GRAYSONS EXPLAINS THE ISSUES.
Equal pay and the gender pay gap omen have a legal right to equal pay with men for equal work yet in the vast majority of industries the pay gap is still skewed towards men. The current pay gap is 18.1 per cent nationally. While the Office for National Statistics states that this is the lowest since records began, it is anticipated that there will be a substantial increase in equal pay claims following the publicity surrounding Carrie Gracie’s recent resignation and other high-profile complaints by up to 200 women against the BBC over pay. The BBC published an equal pay audit and gender pay gap report following the furore over the salaries of its best-paid stars in summer 2017. These reports highlighted that men who work for the BBC earn an average 9.3 per cent more than women. Carrie Gracie has stepped down from her position of China editor, accusing the BBC of having a “secretive and illegal” pay culture. However, while recent gender pay gap reports have highlighted that some women are still paid, on average, substantially less than their male colleagues, it is important to note that the gender pay gap differs from ‘equal pay’ since it is concerned with the differences in average pay over a period of time, irrespective of role. Equal pay deals with the pay differences between men and women who carry out the same or similar jobs and it is these differences that give rise to a legal claim. Specifically, the law on equal pay provides that employers must give men and women equal treatment in the terms and conditions of their employment contract if they are employed to do ‘like work’, which is work that is the same or broadly similar; work rated as equivalent under a job evaluation study; or
W
work found to be of equal value in terms of effort, skill or decision making. Employees are also entitled to know how their pay is made up and can compare any terms in their contract of employment with the equivalent terms in a comparator’s contract. A comparator is an employee of the opposite sex working for the same employer, doing like work of equal value. If the work done by a claimant and their comparator is not like work or work of equal value there will be no claim. If the work is like work and of equal value, an employer may still defend a claim if it can shown that the reason for any pay difference is due to a genuine factor and not based on the sex of the employee.
Head of Employment Law Jennifer Walker
An employee who thinks they are not receiving equal pay can write to their employer asking for information that will help them establish whether there is a pay difference and if so the reasons for the difference. If an employee cannot resolve the pay issues via a formal grievance procedure, they may complain to an employment tribunal under the Equality Act 2010 while still working in the job or up to six months after leaving the employment to which the claim relates. Employers who lose equal pay claims could be forced to conduct an equal pay audit and publish the results. Also, the new gender pay reporting regulations require organisations with 250 or more employees to publish the difference between the mean and median hourly pay and bonus payments rate for their full-time male and female employees. The reporting deadline is 4 April 2018 and it is likely that the interest and volume of claims is likely to grow in the months up to and following this deadline. If you are affected by any of these issues, please contact the employment team at Graysons Solicitors for advice.
For help and advice on employment law issues, please contact us on 01142 050 366, email employment@graysons.co.uk www.graysons.co.uk T:@Graysonsemplaw

HEALTHY EATING
Eating for health RACHEL MARTIN’S GUIDE TO THE SUPERFOODS YOU SHOULD BE INCLUDING IN YOUR DIET THIS YEAR. ccording to Mintel’s 2018 global food and drink report, plant-based diets are set to explode into the mainstream this year, and in a bid for optimal wellness, 'superfoods’ are now seen as a direct pathway to radiant health and boundless energy. While in 2017 we turned to the healing properties of turmeric, macadamia nuts and maca powder, this year edible clays, matcha
A
and hemp products are set to be huge, according to experts. And the new alternatives, though a little strange sounding on the face of it, claim to offer myriad health benefits and are of course environmentally sustainable. Here, Southside takes a look some of the health food trends predicted to be huge in 2018, and reveals what could well be set to become your new nutrition normal.
Hemp Seeds These small seeds are rich in essential fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids, including omega-3s, which can help fight coronary heart disease, cancer, and even symptoms of depression. Hemp seeds are also a rich source of the polyunsaturated fatty acid gamma linolenic acid, or GLA, which has been known to help with a number of maladies, ranging from allergies and attention deficit disorder, to lowering cholesterol levels.
Chicories Haven’t heard of this one? Chicories are those bitter winter greens like endive and escarole or purple radicchio. They are a good source of vitamin C and may also help boost heart health.
POMEGRANATE Pomegranates are known for their antioxidants and are an excellent source of fiber and vitamins C and K.
Matcha Chock full of polyphenols, matcha is lauded for its anti-aging properties. Importantly, it may help lower the risk of certain cancers and heart disease. And if you’re trying to stay focused on your goals this year, sip on this. Matcha is known to boost mental alertness too without the jitters you might get from other caffeinated drinks.
Activated Charcoal Activated charcoal can help you get purer skin and whiter teeth, as well as absorbing the standing tannins found in drinks like coffee and red wine.
SEAWEED Unlike their land-bound counterparts, sea-grown vegetables are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which may prevent sudden heart attack and stroke. Seaweed is also full of important minerals, such as bone-friendly calcium and magnesium, as well as iron, potassium, iodine and zinc.

Açai Native to the rainforests of South America, the açai is a small purple berry that has been touted as a weight-loss and anti-aging aid. The fruit contains very high levels of antioxidants in the form of anthocyanins, which help fight cancer and heart disease.

GOJI BERRIES Goji berries have become a common sight on supermarket shelves, and for good reason: they contain a lot of vitamin C. Native to Tibet and Inner Mongolia, these orange-red tangy berries have been used by Chinese herbalists for centuries to treat visual ailments and poor circulation and to help boost the immune system. Scientific research has yet to support such claims, but there’s no denying that goji berries are rich in plant-based antioxidants and compounds.
Chia Seeds Native to Mexico, these nutrient-rich seeds have become all the rage among superfood seekers. And it’s no surprise - chia seeds are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, fiber and calcium.
Nutritional Yeast Not to be confused with active dry or brewer’s yeast, nutritional yeast is made from deactivated yeast and has no leavening power. It’s a great source of protein and fiber and is also among the only vegan-friendly sources of vitamin B12, which is essential for normal brain and nervous-system function but found mostly in meat and dairy products.
Black Garlic Black garlic has long been prized for its health benefits, but it became widely available in Western markets only a few years ago. The black bulb is created by fermenting raw garlic through prolonged exposure to heat and humidity, giving it a sweet, mellow flavour and an inky hue. In addition to the sulfuric compounds that provide garlic with its heart-healthy and anticancer benefits, the fermented cloves are a source of important probiotics.
Kale
GREEN TEA This ages-old health secret has been used as a natural remedy for everything from cancer to heart disease. The secret to this delicious drink? Antioxidants. The main superhero here is Epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, a phytochemical that slows irregular cell growth, which could potentially help prevent the growth of some cancers.
Move over spinach, you've got some fierce competition. Kale contains a type of phytonutrient that appears to lessen the occurrence of a wide variety of cancers, including breast and ovarian. Though scientists are still studying why this happens, they believe the phytonutrients in kale trigger the liver to produce enzymes that neutralize potentially cancer-causing substances.
Salmon Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, which the body cannot produce by itself. These fatty acids reduce inflammation, improve circulation and increase the ratio of good to bad cholesterol. Salmon is also a rich source of selenium, which helps prevent cell damage, and several B vitamins.
QUINOA This teeny-tiny, grain-like seed packs some serious nutritional prowess. With a mild, nutty flavour and a texture similar to rice or couscous, quinoa is one of the only grains or seeds that provides all nine essential amino acids our bodies can't produce themselves. And it's filled with protein - eight grams per one-cup serving, to be exact.

Z CARS The highly delightful and exceptionally enjoyable Mazda MX-5 has a new addition to its line-up – It’s called the Z-Sport. Limited to just 300 cars, the Z-Sport stands out from the rest of the range by introducing a cherry-coloured roof, BBS alloy wheels and sand leather seats. Like the standard MX-5 the Z-Sport will be powered by a 157hp 2.0-litre petrol motor with the power being sent to the rear wheels via a delicious six-speed snappy manual gearbox. No 1.5-litre engine available here. The Z-Sport represents the first chance to buy a currentgeneration MX-5 convertible with an alternatively coloured fabric roof. The Focus RS is, to put it bluntly, a road-going heat-seeking missile. It is one of the fastest cars on typical British B-roads and yet it’s just a Ford with a Ford pricetag. Available only from February until March, Ford has released what they call the RS Red Edition. This ‘pack’ allows the Focus RS to be ordered with a Race Red exterior body colour accompanied by black-cast alloy wheels and some grey-finished brake callipers. It features contrasting black roof, door mirrors and rear spoiler, plus partial leather Recaro seats and carbon fibre trim. Other features include rear parking sensors, Active City Stop, cruise control and privacy glass. Just 300 units will be built with a pricetag starting from £36,295.
Living up to its name Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you the fastest and most extreme McLaren road car ever made – the McLaren Senna. With a name bearing the most famous F1 drivers’ name of them all, Ayrton Senna, this car must live up to its promise and live up to it it does indeed. For starters, this car is a race-car legalised for the road. How cool is that? It’s the lightest McLaren road car since the iconic McLaren F1 and – being powered by a 789hp 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 – the most powerful internal combustion McLaren engine to date – it will be able to bend the laws of physics (almost). Like all modern McLaren products, it has a mid-engine reardrive chassis. Priced at £750,000. 98 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
