WS Legal

Gary Crothers, solicitor advocate (higher courts civil proceedings) and family law specialist at Wosskow Brown, discusses arrangements for children.

S

un cream? check. Passport? check. Flip flops? check. With the summer holidays fast approaching, the more organised among you will already be gathering together the essentials to ensure your time away runs as smoothly – and is therefore as enjoyable – as possible. But if you have separated from your children’s mother or father and are planning to take the kids abroad for a well-deserved break, there are some legal obligations that you may need to consider. To be able to take your children out of the country, you must have consent from everyone who has parental responsibility, or a court order which allows you to do so. Court orders can take some time to obtain, so if you have already booked a holiday, don’t wait any longer to get the necessary documents in place. If the other parent does not agree with your plans, you may be able to apply to the courts for a Specific Issue Order which, if granted, would give you permission to take the children out of England and Wales. In most circumstances, the courts will

generally feel that it is in the best interests of the children to be able to enjoy a holiday with one parent. This is assuming that there are no concerns for the children’s safety, and provided that there are no concerns that the children will not be returned at the end of your break. These issues can make matters more complex and take longer to deal with. In any event, we would strongly suggest that you do not book any holidays until the arrangements have been agreed or a court order is in place. If the order is not made in time, you may miss your holiday. As well as offering advice regarding taking children on holiday, we can advise on all child-related legal issues. This includes Child Arrangements orders (formerly known as contact orders and residence orders) which state who the children should live with and how much time they should spend with each parent on a weekly basis, through to specific issues. To find out more about any legal matters

concerning children, or any other family law problems, call your local branch and ask to speak to the family team. Breathtaking results Taking inspiration from their travels, a Sheffield couple set about transforming their home with a little help from an expert local company.

W

hen Jim and Adrienne Hunt returned to Whirlow after five years abroad, they had a vision that would transform their beautiful – though dated – Whirlowdale Rise home into something truly spectacular. After much research, they hired a local company to turn their dream design into a reality. The results, we’re sure you’ll agree, are breathtaking. As the couple explain here, it was the excellent work ethic of James Clarke and his team at Sheffield Development Properties that ensured the project was such a success. “We wanted a modern but cosy look and they have achieved that extremely well. It works perfectly for us. “In total, they have completed an orangery-style extension with bifold doors and a glass atrium roof; installed insulated, tinted windows; subdivided the former kitchen into a utility room and a study; transformed the downstairs cloakroom and the main bathroom and landscaped the garden. “The atrium roof is our favourite part. It’s so well insulated that it’s here while they were conducting the work. “We are delighted with the final outcome a steady temperature even if it’s really hot or and our friends, family and neighbours are really cold outside. equally impressed. We wouldn’t hesitate to “The team that completed the work was recommend the services of James.” great – the workmen were tidy, helpful and courteous. James even visited our immediate neighbours to explain about the work and apologise for the disruption before they began. “It was a big project when we started and it grew even bigger as there were other rooms we decided to do along the way, but nothing phased James. They just absorbed the new work into their timetable and got on with it. “James certainly has a ‘can do’ attitude and nothing is too much trouble. W

hen you are creating a new space in your home, the last thing you want is for it to look like everyone else’s. Ciao Interiors understands that each of your rooms needs to be personalised and tailored to fit your lifestyle. They provide a high quality, bespoke service, covering

everything from the consultancy stage, to the construction, to adding the finishing touches to your home. Whether you’re looking for some unique wallpaper to complement your living room or are rebuilding your kitchen from scratch, Ciao will be able to source the right products for the job. Owner Angela de Jong is an experienced designer having worked in the industry for 17 years and has taught design students at Sheffield College. Along with the expertise of her colleague, Sue Thompson, Angela opened the studio in Ranmoor in 2006. Since then, the business has gone from strength to strength. Ciao has also built up a strong reputation and clientele through the impressive examples on their website. They work to all tastes and aim to provide a luxurious, yet relaxed environment for their clients. “Home is the most important place and everything in it needs to flow. We’re here to think creatively and start by visiting our clients to have a fresh look at their space and how they live,” says Angela. “We then discuss their options, make a mood board and deliver a scheme to fit their particular needs.” The Ciao team pride themselves on creating rooms that have substance as well as style. “We make sure everything is immaculate, well built and stands the test of

time,” she says. “Building and design go hand in hand, so it is a good idea to get us in as soon as possible. Each client has their own criteria and we work on a project by project basis.” If the idea of starting some major work on your home gives you a headache, Angela and her team will gladly manage the project from start to completion. There are very few interior designers in Sheffield that deliver the whole package and with Ciao, you get so much more than a lick of paint and some advice on décor. They bring in their own trusted and like-minded teams of electricians, builders and decorators, so you don’t have to lift a finger. Got your own contractors linedup? The Ciao team are also happy to work closely with outside companies to make your vision a reality. Their services include decorating, curtains, blinds, bedspreads and upholstery.

consideration for their sustainability and their impact on the environment. Ciao will always stock the latest collections by established manufacturers such as Mulberry, Osborne & Little and the finest paints by Fired Earth and Farrow & Ball, as well as fabric and wallpaper samples of many other top quality brands. If you want to be ahead of what’s hot, reindeer rugs and animal print throws are a must for many of Ciao’s clients this season. As well as sprucing up homes all over Sheffield, London and holiday homes in Spain, Ciao also take on many commercial clients. If you want to see some gorgeous examples of their work, look no further than the George & Dragon in Wentworth. A few simple touches, such as plush seat covers and quirky book patterned wallpaper have added warmth and individuality to this village pub. Angela and her team are always willing to go the extra mile. Whether, it’s a 10 minute job that turns into a two hour job, or a matter of spending hours sourcing the perfect wallpaper for a client, they will not stop until the job is done. The Ciao Interiors studio is open Tuesday to Saturday, with a late night design clinic until 8pm on Thursdays. “We welcome people to come pick our brains and encourage them to come armed with magazine clippings, photos and lots of questions,” says Angela. “It’s absolutely free and there’s no catch!” To book a design clinic appointment, call 0114 2304800 or drop in to peruse the latest stock. Angela and her team look forward to providing advice and inspiration for your home or business.

They will procure impressive items that you won’t find in high street stores such as lighting mirrors, lamps, tables and cushions. Many of these are one offs and are from suppliers all over the world. If you want something truly unique, Angela and her colleague Hannah Walker have had years of training and experience in CAD (computer aided design), which assists them in designing the right layouts and furniture for your home. Whatever you want, the Ciao team will always go above and beyond for their customers Angela and her team always have their fingers on the pulse regarding the latest home trends. Ciao’s colourful and eyecatching window displays are always popular with their clients and beautifully demonstrate an eye for detail. Customer testimonials “Ciao have created a professional environment for our practice which was key but have added imagination and flair to create a colour scheme that will be a talking point in itself.” Paul & Alison Hattam - The Physios, Sheffield “We walked into Ciao to buy a pair of curtains and over the last couple of years the team at Ciao have worked their magic in most of our house. They always listen very carefully to what we have in mind, then go away and come up with some fabulous ideas that we just would never have thought of that work perfectly with our home.” Richard & Caroline Brailsford - Dore, Sheffield “When my home needed a new coat of paint, I needed some professional advice on how to interpret ideas and put them onto the walls! Ciao Interiors did just that. The work included an art deco make-over of my forty year old fitted cupboards. At all stages of the work, every attention was given to the detail and the results are amazing.” Jan & Graham Smedley – Sandgate, Sheffield

At the click of a button... Do online, DIY divorces do exactly as they say on the tin or should legal advice still be sought? Best Solicitors’ Wendy Bailey looks at the pros and cons.

I

f you type “quick divorce” into Google a series of adverts for online divorce sites appears. Each site offers a quick divorce for an ever-decreasing price, £49 here, £37 there. But are they as good as they seem? Can we believe what we are being offered? What do the websites offer? Online sites offer a variety of quick fixed-fee packages for divorces. But do they do what they claim to do and are they in everyone’s best interests? There are certainly those who have used these sites without difficulty but what about those who have assets and children? Head of the Family Department at Best Solicitors, Wendy Bailey, agrees that individuals can complete a divorce using an online service. However these should only be

used in straightforward cases with no assets or children involved. The websites can provide you with the appropriate divorce papers to file at the court, but these can be obtained free of charge from the court itself. People must also be aware that the divorce itself does not take place online, the papers are filed at the court and court fees must be paid. What happens then if the court rejects the papers for incorrect drafting? Wendy is concerned at the cases where clients have filed their own divorce papers and have then had to seek help as the court have rejected their divorce petition. Wendy explains: “Everyone who files for divorce must use one of five grounds and must prove these sufficiently for the divorce to be granted. If parties have been apart for more than two years and both agree to the divorce this can be a simple process, but if using

unreasonable behaviour grounds for example, the papers must be carefully drafted.” Is a DIY divorce ever the right thing for you? Wendy agrees that in some cases, where there are no issues to resolve, parties can deal with their own divorce without assistance. However, if assets exist – a house, savings – they should seek legal advice. “Without each party declaring all of their assets how can you know what is a fair settlement for you?” Be pragmatic! What could you lose out on? Seek full legal advice! Call 0114 281 3636 or visit www.bestsolicitorsonline.co.uk

Working collaboratively A different way to resolve family disputes.

I

rwin Mitchell’s Family Law team in Sheffield are now able to provide clients with collaborative family law services, following Zoe Round, Partner in the Sheffield Family team, completing her training as a Collaborative Lawyer. The collaborative family process is a relatively new way of resolving family disputes. Each party instructs their own lawyer, who will be with you throughout the process. The parties arrange to meet, all together, to discuss and resolve issues face to face, rather than negotiating through letter and telephone. Once agreement has been reached, the lawyers will make a Court

Order, confirming the agreement between the parties. Collaborative lawyers have special training to deal with complex dispute resolution and the emotional impact of divorce proceedings. Finalising divorce through collaboration is considered to be less emotionally harmful to parties, especially so for children. Zoe said: “Collaborative law is really important because it can give clients an opportunity to resolve issues without going to Court. We find clients appreciate having a lawyer to support them through the face to face meetings. I’m delighted that we can offer

this service to our clients.” Collaborative law is just one of the services Irwin Mitchell Family team can provide to clients, and whilst it may work for some, it may not for others. The team of family specialists regularly advise on all aspects of family law including children, property and financial issues. We are up front about our fees and will discuss costs with you, which suit your circumstances. If would you like to speak to someone in the team about a family law issue, please contact Martin Loxley on 0114 274 4237 or Zoe Round on 0114 274 4400.

“At Irwin Mitchell, team head Martin Loxley is ‘tactically astute and has first-rate knowledge'. A qualified arbitrator, Loxley leads on highly complex and valuable asset cases involving professionally sensitive and international elements.” – Legal 500 2014 www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

WS Home Improvement

From windows and doors to decorating and interior design, Arundel Joinery can help you achieve your dream home.

The ultimate package

A

s one of Sheffield’s leading joinery manufacturers since 1985, you’ll no doubt have heard of Arundel Joinery. This family-run business has been providing specialist handcrafted windows and doors for more than 25 years and last year the brand expanded to include Arundel Interiors and Arundel Decorating. This ultimate trio provides clients with the complete package; from ideas and design, right through to completion of every aspect of your home. Director Danny Broomhead teamed up with skilled painter and decorator Lee Bellamy for the decorating, and Chris Headland (formerly Renaissance Joinery), an experienced professional who works from a separate workshop in Dronfield, for interiors. The three specialists, alongside the many talented designers and tradespeople within the company, provide customers with a

complete renovation service. If you employ Arundel to transform your home, a designer will meet with you to look at previous designs and discuss your ideas and needs. These are then used to create high quality, handcrafted pieces – exactly to your taste. Arundel Joinery’s dedicated team can recreate existing designs, or offer an alternative solution to suit you and your property. Whether you want them to plot the intricacies of a new staircase, door or window, their design services are offered as a combined extra so you won’t be surprised by any additional charges. They use traditional materials and tools to deliver high quality results and they make sure they use certified, sustainable suppliers of high quality soft and hardwoods. As a Yorkshire manufacturer of traditional and heritage products, they believe in providing superb design and exceptional precision-built quality.

Not only do they focus on great quality, but Arundel Joinery have an eye on the environment too. All of their timber is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved and their suppliers are members of the Timber Trade Federation. This means that all of their wood comes straight from a certified forest and the supply chain has not been broken. Some timber may need to be supplied from forests outside of the UK, and they ensure that they choose suppliers to supply wood from certified and legal managed forests. Also if you have uPVC windows and doors, they will dispose of your old ones at a licensed site. Although Arundel Joinery is a Sheffieldbased company, their specialist work has become so well-known they get offered contracts in London too. Danny says: “The businesses in London doing what we do charge a fortune and those that are cheaper don’t offer the quality we do.” Despite demand elsewhere, their roots are still very much in Sheffield and their primary focus remains simple – to provide bespoke products and a fantastic service. For more information on their extensive range of handcrafted products, decorating and interior services visit www.arundeljoinery.co.uk.To obtain a free no-obligation quote call 07918 696 950 or 0114 2756 255. Derbyshire’s best kept secret Nicholas Boys of Barlborough Hall School.

F

or the last two years, Nicholas Boys has been Head Teacher at Barlborough Hall School, which welcomes children aged three to 11 years. “As a Head Teacher, no two days are the same. At different times I find that I am called upon to act as friend, mentor, councillor, physician, CEO, teacher and parent. I have an open-door policy, which ensures I am available to the staff, children and parents of our community. “Most working days include staff meetings, either for our own campus or that of our senior school, Mount St Mary’s College. Running school assemblies, taking junior boys games for sport and ensuring effective communication between the school and parent body are all part and parcel of the post. Above all, my working day involves the pursuit

of excellence in all that we do, to ensure that the school continues to move from strength to strength. “In my opinion, there is no more rewarding or noble action than to help another individual on their own life journey. Today’s student is tomorrow’s doctor who cures cancer, or the next man on the moon. “The children love coming to Barlborough Hall School, and our nursery is no exception. This year, we have decided to build upon our already ‘outstanding’ term-time nursery, to an all-year-round provision. “As part of this development, the school will be investing in a new synthetic, grasscovered, outdoor playground, which will greatly enhance our Early Years facilities for the enjoyment of all the children. The remodelling of the interior layout will help us continue to deliver the stimulating educational

experience our Early Years setting is known for, involving swimming, French, music, ICT, baking, PE classes and welly walks around our beautiful 330-acre grounds. “The reopening of our nursery on 1 September next year, from 7.30am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, for 51 weeks of the year, will provide much greater flexibility for parents. For anyone interested in seeing what we have to offer, I would love to invite you to come in and have a look around the school. You might just discover why our parents say Barlborough Hall School is “the best kept secret in Derbyshire.” Barlborough Park, Barlborough, Chesterfield, S43 4TJ Tel: 01246 810511 www.barlboroughhallschool.com

We value and celebrate the achievements of all our children

At Barlborough Hall School and Nursery, we offer a seamless education for all 3 to 11 year olds. We also believe that every child deserves the best possible start in life, and as a dedicated team, we work hard to feed their imagination and grow their potential. Barlborough Hall and Mount St Mary’s College are independent co-educational 3-18 schools. Both enjoy enviable reputations as first class Catholic schools, welcoming children of all denominations. The schools are set in beautiful surroundings on the Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire borders close to Junction 30 of the M1. Mini bus is available to all local areas. Before and after school care, holiday provision and early years funding accepted at Barlborough Hall.

WS Meet the Head

Living the dream Head teacher Anne Camm always wanted to work in education and at Ashdell School she found her perfect job.

F

rom the moment Anne Camm lined up her dolls as a child and pretended to be at the helm of a classroom, she knew she wanted to be a teacher. The pinnacle of the illustrious career that followed these childhood imaginings came seven years ago when she was appointed HeadTeacher of Ashdell School. Born and raised in Northern Ireland, Anne first came to England to train as a teacher in London. After returning to her homeland for three years as a newly qualified teacher, she made what would be a permanent move to England when she took a position at Millfield School in Somerset. But it wasn’t until a head of Pre-Prep job at Birkdale School became available 19 years ago that Anne moved up to Sheffield, where she has lived ever since. “Sheffield wasn’t all smoke and industry as I had been led to believe,” she laughs, “and I soon became incredibly fond of the city. Ashdell has an excellent ethos and reputation and I jumped at the chance to take up the Headmistress position here in 2008.” There’s now no such thing as a typical working day in Anne’s world and it’s this variety that she so enjoys. While she does try

to pop in to breakfast club – sometimes even enjoying a meal herself – and take the time to greet pupils and parents in the playground each morning, the rest of the day follows in a whirlwind of assemblies, good work recognition, dealing with enquiries, chatting to pupils, forward planning, compliance preparation, and meeting current and prospective parents. “It’s not a nine-to-five job and you’ll often see me around school on evenings and weekends. In fact, during holidays, I have to go away somewhere because I can’t help popping into school even on my days off!” It’s the little everyday things that make Anne look forward to work each morning. From the girls’ first small steps in Snowdrops – the school’s Pre-School division – to their graduation at the age of 11, the journey they take is a privilege to both witness and contribute to. When the girls leave, Anne and her staff don’t just say goodbye to them, but to the whole family. “It may sound strange,” she admits, “but one of the greatest achievements is knowing the parents are sad when their daughter leaves Ashdell – it means we’ve done our job well.” By building partnerships with parents and operating an open-door policy, the girls, their

families and the staff are invited to discuss ideas and concerns as they arise. “I encourage communication with parents because, between the ages of three and 11, the girls are in my care and I take that responsibility very seriously. I have a duty to the pupils and their parents to provide the very best education and I do everything I can to ensure that we deliver an exceptional learning experience that the girls will treasure for the rest of their lives.” As a family-orientated school, Ashdell encourages pupils to value, respect and look after their school family as they do their own. It is this family feel that cements their reputation as a caring, friendly and welcoming school. Each Friday, the whole family are invited to breakfast club, where the buzzing atmosphere and excitable chatter set the perfect tone for the upcoming weekend. “Without blowing my own trumpet too much, I do like to think the girls are happy here and the staff are happy working here too, We’re a dedicated, passionate team that works really well together and we always go the extra mile for our girls.” Together, they promote the ethos that Anne first had as a teacher, and has continued to develop throughout her career – learning through fun, in a warm and nurturing environment. As an independent school, they’re able to

‘My ambition is to keep the school moving forward, embracing modern technology and maintaining the many traditions Ashdell is recognised for.”

achieve this aim through a huge variety of activities and learning opportunities. The ‘have-a-go’ attitude ensures the girls leave Ashdell well equipped to make informed decisions on the path they will take next. From Judo, woodwork and cookery to diving, first aid and crown green bowling, confidence is built in all sorts of areas to bring out the best in every girl. Anne prides herself on her approachable nature and loves getting involved in these activities both in and out of school. The

residential trips to Center Parcs with Year 3 and 4 pupils are one of the highlights of her academic year and she relishes the opportunity to relax and have fun with them away from the school environment. “As a relatively small prep school, our aim is to be one of the best,” she states resolutely. “We pride ourselves on keeping many of our traditions alive but we also take pride in the fact that we are embracing the 21st century. As such, my ambition is to keep the school moving forward, embracing modern technology and maintaining the many traditions Ashdell is recognised for.” When finally asked what Anne most enjoys about her job, the answer is short and simple. “The pupils,” she says without hesitation. “They make this the best job in the world.”

Focus on the individual Anne Jones of Sheffield High Infant and Junior School.

A

nne Jones first joined the school 20 years ago and has been Head Teacher of the Infant and Junior School, which teaches girls aged four to 11, for 13 years. Having first experienced Sheffield High School as a mum, she knows exactly what discerning parents expect. “We offer small class sizes, individual attention for each pupil, specialist music and sports teachers, an excellent partnership with parents, supervised care from 7.30am-6.15pm, close links with the senior school and a tailor-made curriculum. “Our current focus is to continue to promote thinking skills, resilience and independence of thought, and encourage our girls to become self-motivated learners. We have a strong emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and encourage girls to enjoy these at a high level.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of the role is leading initiatives, working with staff to implement these, and then seeing the impact that they have on pupils’ learning. I really enjoy spending time talking with the girls and, of course, teaching. As we also have a Senior School for girls up to the age of 18, I love seeing how the girls progress after they leave the Juniors at 11 and the confident young women that they grow to become.

“I don’t really have a ‘typical’ day; I enjoy spending time meeting current and prospective pupils and parents, meeting staff and observing lessons, doing development planning and tracking pupil progress. I also teach for an hour each day. “In addition, there are meetings both within school and the local community and, as we are part of a group of schools (Girls’ Day School Trust), I travel to our head office in London and also to other schools within the group to share best practice and work together on joint initiatives. Our busy extra-curricular programme means that there are frequent sports matches and concerts to support. To arrange a visit, telephone the admissions secretary on 0114 358 7602 or see www.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk 10 Rutland Park, Sheffield, S10 2PE Tel: 0114 266 1435 www.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk

Excellence brings growing demand John Hicks of Westbourne School and Pre-School, Sheffield.

J

ohn Hicks has been at Westbourne School in Broomhill for 11 years, during which time he has seen many advancements. Originally a boys’ Preparatory School that moved to co-education, girls now make up 45 per cent of Westbourne’s population, creating a thriving co-ed environment where girls and boys function effectively together – as is the natural order of things. “I have seen the school go from strength to strength, particularly in academic achievement, and I am proud that the school is now regarded as one of the best in the region. “As more and more people have discovered the excellent all-round education that today’s Westbourne offers, demand for

places has increased dramatically. I am delighted to have been closely involved in the acquisition of three new buildings and a brand new Pre-School to accommodate the growing Westbourne population, which ranges from three to 16 years of age. “I was recently asked what a typical working day encompasses and what I enjoy about it… well, for me it’s the people at Westbourne and the interaction with them that I particularly enjoy - Meeting and greeting pupils, attending and hosting assemblies, briefing staff, meeting prospective parents, teaching Mathematics and chairing meetings. My day also involves undertaking administration tasks, working on strategic planning and moving forward with school development projects.” “The most enjoyable parts of my job are

seeing the children develop in confidence, sharing in their successes both personally and academically, and being able to lead the school forward and achieve our aims. “We are currently very close to a two form entry throughout the whole of Junior School and I look forward to seeing this to fruition. My ambition for the school is to be full in all year groups and to continue the enhancement of pupil achievement in academia, sport, drama and music.” Westbourne School and Pre-School 60 Westbourne Road, Broomhill, Sheffield S10 2QT Tel: 0114 266 0374 www.westbourneschool.co.uk

Laying strong foundations Paul Owen of Birkdale School.

A

long with a team of motivated and gifted staff, Paul Owen – who has been Head Master at Birkdale School for five years – prides himself on providing a warm, caring and supportive environment for boys aged 11-18 and girls aged 16-18. Paying close attention to the needs of each individual student, they help to develop the students’ abilities, their character and their confidence, and provide the best foundation for a happy and successful life. As well as excellent examination results, Birkdale also offers an enormous range of extra-curricular opportunities to nurture the talents of individual students. “I really enjoy being with the students and watching them grow and develop over a period of time. Birkdale is blessed with a

fantastic group of students, seeing them find and develop their talents and increase in confidence constantly reminds me why I originally decided to teach and why working with young people is great. “There is no such thing as a typical working day for me. The joy of headship at Birkdale is the variety and I often change activity every 20 minutes or so through the day. So I might answer emails from staff or parents, meet with a group of students who have done particularly well to congratulate them, consult with a teacher, telephone someone at another organisation linked to Birkdale, take assembly, teach a lesson and chair a meeting all before 10.30am. “I always want to make sure that Birkdale

is offering the best possible education whether in pastoral care, academic progress or extra-curricular activities. Over the next few years, GCSE and A level courses are changing and I am thinking hard at the moment about how best to implement these changes for the best outcomes for the students.” 4 Oakholme Road, Sheffield S10 3DH Tel: 0114 266 8408 www.birkdaleschool.org.uk

Learning for a richer life Dr. Nicholas Cuddihy of Mount St Mary’s.

A

fter six successful years as Head of Crescent College – one of Ireland’s top schools – Dr Nicholas Cuddihy took over as Head Master of Mount St Mary’s College, for 11 to 18 year olds, last August. “At my previous school we enjoyed excellent results. But when the opportunity arose at Mount St Mary’s I had just completed my doctorate in Education and I was delighted to take up the challenge to lead in this wonderful school. “We are inclusive and welcoming of all because we know we have excellent teachers who can deliver a quality education to all students to GCSE regardless of their abilities. We have a track record of excellent academic results, both at GCSE and A level.

“We devote ourselves to the care and wellbeing of our students from Nursery to Sixth Form. Because we are a small school with very small class sizes, we can deliver that individual attention. “The best thing about working in a school like Mount St Mary’s is the infectious optimism of youth that surrounds you. On any day here I have the pleasure of seeing all that is best about young people; their hopes and dreams, their optimism and ambition. “Schools are not supposed to be merely hot houses of academic study – there is so much more to life than that. The best schools, just like Mount St Mary’s, are places

where the students are being prepared for success in life in all its richness. Through a very rich and varied extra-curricular programme of activities, trips, hobbies, clubs and sports, we teach our students to be positive, to be confident and to grow as people. “Our Strategic Action Plan Mount 175 is delivering remarkable improvements and growth in all areas of school life. The numbers of applications and admissions have increased by more than 15 per cent in this year alone. “To accommodate this growth, we have invested heavily in a number of key areas of school life. In maths and science especially, we have recruited a number of young and inspiring teacher leaders. In those subjects, and others, we have seen excellent grades in tests this year. We have also added further investment to our highly successful music department.” College Road, Spinkhill, Sheffield S21 3YL Tel: 01246 433388 www.msmcollege.com

Innovation in learning Peter Phillips of S. Anselm’s School, Bakewell.

P

eter Phillips has been Headmaster of S. Anselm’s School, Bakewell since September 2012. He was previously Headmaster of Cundall Manor in Yorkshire for 14 years and has taught English at prestigious prep schools all across the country in his 25-year teaching career. Prior to teaching, he was a surveyor and was involved in the redevelopment of the Globe Theatre in London. S. Anselm’s takes children from age three, with its vibrant Nursery and outstanding PrePrep. The Prep School educates pupils from Years 3-8 and has an enviable record of sending children to the finest senior schools nationally including Shrewsbury, Oundle, Eton and Wycombe Abbey. In response to changing attitudes and local demand, in September 2015 S. Anselm’s

will open a College, offering an innovative approach to learning. As a matter of course, outstanding GCSE teaching will be offered and combined with a holistic and personalised activity programme, giving pupils a wider perspective on life and its challenges and opportunities. Peter Phillips has expertise in this field and is excited about the prospect of extending S. Anselm’s provision to age 16. “Building on S. Anselm’s excellent track record in academics, sports and the arts, we are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to continue providing our exceptional teaching to those seeking academic excellence and a wider education,” said Peter. “It’s a fascinating region which I love exploring and offers great

opportunity to those who learn here.” As Headmaster of a full boarding school, Peter Phillips’ day starts with breakfast with the boarders and may end with sharing some hot chocolate and toast before the pupils’ bedtime. Often the evenings provide him and the other dedicated staff opportunities to catch up on their planning and activities. Weekends are action-packed, with Saturday afternoon matches, boarders’ activities and church service rounded off with a delicious school Sunday roast with all boarding parents invited to share. It really is a 24/7 job with very little time off during the term; luckily he is ably supported by his wife, Sarah. “For me the joy of the job is getting to know the children from age three and being a key part of their formative years. To watch them head off to some of the most prestigious schools in the country, secure and confident with an interest and respect for everyone around them, is a wonderful feeling.” S Anselm’s School Bakewell, Derbyshire DE45 1DP Tel: 01629 812734 www.sanselms.co.uk

Educating our future leaders Gavin Horgan of Worksop College.

G

avin Horgan has been Headmaster of Worksop College, which teaches boys and girls aged 13 to 18, for three years. “Currently my day starts with a 6am run with the dog in beautiful Clumber Park, followed by a five minute breakfast with my four-yearold son. I am in work for 7am and catch up on overnight correspondence before a daily 8am meeting with the Deputy Head. At 8.30am, I meet with the Captains of School, which is followed by assembly. “My days then include a combination of teaching Latin, site visits of our new building,

meetings with prospective parents and lunch with staff. In the evenings, I work with local primary schools or attend a concert, lecture or enrichment event at the College. One night a week I am on duty across the boarding houses, which is an excellent opportunity to chat to students and check on their progress. “The part of my job that I enjoy the most is helping people to succeed, whether that be children in their learning or teachers in their teaching. Whether students know the path they are destined for or are yet to discover their talents, we will help them to flourish and be the best they can be.

The current ÂŁ3.5million boarding house project means that we can reconfigure our beautiful main building to provide universitylevel research and teaching spaces for our sixth formers. “I believe the focus on employment and education, and the obsession with grades that has existed for some years, is thankfully shifting to those of education providing essential life skills for all children. Worksop College is perfectly placed to provide the best education for the leaders of tomorrow.â€? Worksop College, Sparken Hill, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, S80 3AP Tel: 01909 537100 www.wsnl.co.uk

An exciting future lies ahead Jonathon Clark of St Peter & St Paul School, Chesterfield.

A

fter leaving Westbourne School, where he had been for almost nine years, Jonathon Clark started at St Peter and St Paul, a co-educational school for four to 11 year olds, in April this year. “Joining the school in the last term of this academic year has allowed me a ‘Head’s start’ to get to know the children, staff and parents. It’s been a unique opportunity to feel the heartbeat of the school and the values embodied in its pastoral care, which gives it the unique and exceptional family feel that struck me when I first visited. I aim to hit the ground running on 7 September! “The most enjoyable aspect of my job is the daily interaction with our happy, polite and confident children. Seeing each child enjoy their learning and exploration, and

fulfilling their potential, is very rewarding. “It is also a pleasure to work with a committed and dedicated staff body that passionately strives to go the extra mile to

ensure that all our children are inspired while feeling both safe and valued. I embrace the challenge of further developing our learning culture and academic rigour in the classroom and look forward to celebrating our many successes together. “We ensure every child fully embraces the multitude of enrichment activities and opportunities such a Young Shakespeare Day, World Book Day, Science Week, and the numerous history and culture days. “My plans for the future include creating new and exciting opportunities for our parents, as key stakeholders, to take a more active role in the life of the school. I also aim to empower our Year 5 and 6 children to play an increasingly active role as school ambassadors. “As well as encouraging our children to compete regionally and nationally in both music and sport, I plan to develop our forest school provision and external environment and facilities – we aim to have our own school chickens and for the children to look after them. Who knows, we could be selling our very own St Peter and St Paul organic free-range eggs in the very near future?” St Peter & St Paul School Brambling House, Hady Hill, Chesterfield S41 0EF Tel: 01246 278522 www.stpeterpaul.co.uk

Everything is home-made, from the bread to their meze dishes. They select the best meat and fish and use Turkish cheeses including halloumi. “Faruk and I do all the menus and planning together. Lokanta is a family business built on our values of food and hospitality,” she says. Co-owner Ruth does the accounts, marketing, ordering and ensures things run smoothly. She balances business and family life so you won’t find her at the restaurant in the evenings. Ruth believes women are a great source of support. “I am part of a small group of local business women and it is always useful to sound ideas with like-minded people.” Ruth’s ambition is for the family to continue running the restaurant and she is currently looking to expand their daytime business.

Love The Lot is a ladies boutique on Ecclesall Road that prides itself on stylish, timeless and well-fitted clothing. Company director Amelia Thompson's job varies from general shop work, to developing the store's online presence and dealing with accounts. Amelia provides a friendly, honest and high level of service and has ambitions for Love The Lot to become the shopping destination for women. “We want customers to feel looked after and create an environment that harps back to the old fashioned way of shopping,” she says. “People are once again looking to independent boutiques to provide a service the high street can't. Amelia's believes if you keep working hard, you can't go wrong. “Nine times out of 10, when you get your head down, you come out feeling pleased you stuck at it,” she says. “But never be too stubborn or afraid to ask for help because you can’t do everything.”

Nicola Spencer Spencers Estate Agents Spencers on Ecclesall Road are independent Estate Agents, who sell and rent property, and their hard-working team live in the areas they operate, so have great local knowledge. The majority of their work comes from recommended and repeat clients and since Spencers were established in 1993, they have built a reputation based on excellent customer service. Managing Director Nicola Spencer says her mother is a huge inspiration and instilled in her good values such as honesty and a strong work ethic. “Having a working mother builds confidence and a belief that anything is possible. I certainly hope those principles rub off on my twins,” says Nicola. Nicola’s favourite book is Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway by Susan Jeffers because it reinforces the idea you can overcome anything. Her advice to other business women is to never surrender. “If you fall, get back up. If you fail, learn. Never ever give up.”

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £16m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child is predicted; 9 Grade A star GCSE’s they could be entitled to 100% of the fees 8 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 85% of the fees 7 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 70% of the fees 6 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 50% of the fees

FIRST TERM FREE Day or Boarding Worth up to £9,795 Continues for 2014-15 (a) First Term Free for Years N1 to 8 inclusive, or (b) 50% off First Term’s Fees for Years 9, 10, 12. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). FAMILY SIBLING AWARDS Day & Boarding Our discounts are bigger than others, if indeed they even offer them. Brothers & sisters - boarders from 12% - 20%, day pupils 10%.

um’s the word: It’s a family affair for award-winning photography duo. Local entrepreneur and photographer Georgina Humphrey is the founder of Bundles of Joy Photography, a specialist newborn, baby and maternity portraiture business based in Froggatt, in the Hope Valley area of the Peak District of Derbyshire. After working in photography for many years, Georgina setup the company in 2013 and has since developed a thriving business, with her mother Sue working alongside. Together, the daughter and mother combo capture heart-warming images of newborn babies, less than three weeks old, photographing them at their

home-based studio; a pictureperfect rural setting within the heart of the Peak District, complete with roaring hearth fire and country cottage detailing. Georgina works behind the camera, having been a professional photographer ever since leaving university with a BA Hons in photography. Sue, a mother of four, assists by handling the babies settling them, helping them into position, and also providing crucial hands-on support to ensure the safety of the sleeping newborns during the photoshoots. It’s a formula that’s proving to work wonders. Having now won multiple industry awards for her newborn portraits – including seven from the Guild of Photographers in the past

teeth is in business,” said Nigel, principal of one80dental in Totley, Sheffield. “First impressions count whether you’re trying to make a sale, clinch that major deal, gain promotion or impress in a job interview. “There is plenty of evidence to show that, whether we like it or not, we are judged by our appearance and having bad teeth affects your chances to get ahead.” In recent research nearly 50 per cent of UK senior decision-makers in SMEs said poor dental health or hygiene would have a negative impact on whether to do business with someone. Another 44 per cent admitted that unsightly teeth or bad breath would adversely affect their decision to promote a member of staff – regardless of their ability. Tim Higham has an hereditary powerful lower jaw which means that, over time, his teeth have gradually shattered.Tim’s six remaining front teeth were so badly worn down, they could not even be seen when he spoke. “I’m a fairly confident guy and have been in a commercial sales role for 15 years, dealing with customers from the shop floor to CEO level,” said 37-year-old Tim.

to people. “And knowing that you have good teeth does affect the way you approach – not only other people – but life in general.” One80dental brings together specialists undertaking advanced restorative and implant dentistry at its state-of-the-art centre on Baslow Road,Totley. Nigel stressed that good dental health not only affects individual chances of getting ahead, but can also affect a business’s bottom line. Estimates from the British Dental Health Foundation suggest that UK businesses lost a staggering £36.6m in 2013 due to people taking time off work because of dental problems. Nigel added: “If you are trying to get ahead in your career then clearly good looking and healthy teeth are going to be important – both in terms of how customers, colleagues, current and potential employers see you and how you feel about yourself. “But encouraging staff to look after their dental health is also important for companies if they want to benefit from having a more confident workforce who also take less time off because of dental problems.”

Record breakers

A bigger-than-ever turnout ensured that the 2015 Westside Restaurant Awards was our best to date. But who came out on top? Westside Restaurant Awards 2015

Winners: the team from the Samuel Fox Country Inn

Words: Fiona Barber & Phoebe Seymour Photography: Mark Rodgers

N

ever mind the Oscars or the Baftas… they’ve got nothing on the 2015 Westside Restaurant Awards – truly this year’s most glamorous bash. OK, so Kim and Kanye didn’t make an appearance, but the great and good of Sheffield’s dining scene did, joining together for an evening of fun and celebration at Baldwins Omega. For a true taste of the finest dining out locations across the region, the Westside Restaurant Awards has become an unmissable night out. This is the event that brings together the best venues of the last 12 months, in a celebration of the region’s rich and varied culinary hot spots. In 2015 our annual awards night was

bigger and better than ever, with representatives from over 30 restaurants, cafes, hotels and bistros across Sheffield and North Derbyshire packing the banqueting hall to hear the results of our eagerlyanticipated search for the best dining venues. Picking up the ultimate prize as our Restaurant of the Year was The Samuel Fox Country Inn in Bradwell. It was a double celebration for this hugely impressive country pub at the Westside awards, having won the Best Pub Food accolade earlier in the evening. The Samuel Fox has set superlative standards in recent years, with a variety of real ales, over 40 wines, an indulgent sevencourse tasting menu, an a la carte menu and a smattering of pub classics too. Having

featured in the Michelin, Good Food and AA guides, this was the venue that managed to tick all our judges’ boxes. The competition was tougher than ever and choosing the winners in all categories was no easy task. We were grateful to two independent guest judges, Westside reader Kirsten Howells and chairman of Lyceum Theatre David Heugh, for their help with the decision making. The event itself was our biggest yet, with over 220 guests and hopefuls creating an electric atmosphere as an excellent fivecourse meal was interspersed with 13 awards. Food-lover David hosted the event, and joining him on stage to hand out the awards were Kirsten and Westside publishing manager Sam Brown. Â

WS Restaurant Awards 2015 Joint managing directors Martin Edwards and John Murphy presented the Restaurant of the Year award and were joined on stage by James Northard from event sponsors The Austin’s Group, specialists in wine, spirits and craft beer. Our special thanks go to Fran O’Neill of The Austin’s Group, who helped give the evening a joyous feel by providing excellent drinks throughout the evening. We started in style with a celebratory taste of Enrico Bedin Prosecco, the perfect welcoming fizz. Fran specially selected one white wine, Long Tail Chenin Blanc, and one red, Penny Lane Pinot Noir, to match the menu. All agreed that Fran’s choices and delicious food from the ever-consistent Baldwins, provided the perfect combination. Other highlights of the evening included Brocco on the Park, a Scandinavian-style boutique hotel and restaurant, being named as Best Newcomer. We were particularly pleased to see so many strong candidates for

this award which proved, as managing editor Chris Wilson noted in his opening remarks, that there is definitely something new stirring in the local restaurant scene. We also threw a spotlight on the stars of tomorrow with our Young Chef of the Year Award. It is clear that with so many talented youngsters excelling in kitchens across the region, the future of dining out is in safe hands. Tom Alberts of the Tickled Trout in Barlow was a deserved winner in this category. Those who were unfortunate enough to miss the ceremony in person were still able to catch all the live action, courtesy of feature writers Fiona Barber and Phoebe Seymour, who instantly updated the @Westside_RMC Twitter feed as the winners were announced. Each restaurant represented on the night is a winner in our eyes, but there were only 13 prizes. Read on to find out who picked up the region’s most coveted awards…

Westside Restaurant Awards 2015

Westside Restaurant of the Year & Best Pub Samuel Fox Country Inn Following a refurbishment last year, chef and owner James Duckett has really put his stamp on The Samuel Fox Country Inn. Having learnt from the masters, cooking in two-Michelin-star establishments for famous names such as Gordon Ramsay and Albert Roux, it was only a matter of time before James’ own venture, The Samuel Fox Country Inn, emerged triumphant. James and his team’s expertise has produced delectable taster and a la carte menus and the restaurant was a clear winner for both Best Pub and Restaurant of the Year. After this fantastic double triumph, its no wonder their table was celebrating the loudest. “It’s amazing!” said James. “We just came for a good time, so we’re really humbled and surprised to be going away with not one, but two awards.”

Best Contemporary West 10

Best Family Friendly Ceres

Best Café/Light Bite Made By Jonty

West 10 is no stranger to success, having won Best Contemporary, as well as Restaurant of the Year in 2014. Since West 10 opened 13 years ago, it’s been a staple of the Westside area. It is renowned, not only for its fine food, but for its excellent wine list. As well as winning Best Contemporary, West 10 was one of three restaurants shortlisted for restaurant of the year. Despite being a serial award winner, owner Jonny Higginbottom was surprised by the victory. “It was unexpected, especially with the strong competition we were up against, but we are thoroughly over the moon!”

This is the first time the café/French bistro has enjoyed a taste of success at the Westside Restaurant Awards thanks to an everexpanding menu, which combines British classics and French cuisine, great quality vegetarian dishes and the warmest of welcomes for diners of all ages. Co-owner Caroline and Jean Paul Strappazzon moved to Sheffield from France in 2000 to open a café and have built a loyal following over 15 years. They said: “We are very happy and so proud to win this award!”

Not only did Jonty Cork score a hat-trick at this year’s awards by winning the Best Café/Light Bite category for the third year in a row, but he was also celebrating five years in business on Sharrrow Vale Road. He said: “It’s amazing to win it for a third time. I think the key to success is to be consistent. Customers really like our low key lunch and brunch – we don’t do a lot but we do it well.”

Best Hotel Restaurant The Cavendish

Best Newcomer Best Night Out Brocco On The Park Cubana

With stunning views of the Chatsworth Estate, dining areas that are exquisitely furnished throughout and immaculate service,The Cavendish has been a Derbyshire favourite for many years. Assistant general manager Richard Palmer and restaurant manager Stuart Bond accepted the award and said it was a huge surprise. “This is fantastic, we were not expecting it. It has been very much a team effort; we’re like a little family here. We strive for perfection in everything we do and aim to achieve the best, so we’re delighted to receive this award.”

This Scandinavian-style boutique hotel opened its doors last November and was a refreshing addition to both Sheffield’s food and hotel scene. Brocco’s kitchen offers something different in luxurious surroundings. Owner Tiina Carr said: “I was completely humbled and overwhelmed to have seen off such strong competition in this category. On behalf of myself and my team, we would like thank Westside and all its readers for their continuous support. See you on the terrace soon for a glass of fizz.”

It has been a big year for Cubana, after moving last summer from their former premises on Trippet Lane to a much larger venue in Leopold Square. People have flocked in greater numbers for a winning combination of homemade tapas, salsa dancing and a non-stop party atmosphere. Adrian Bagnoli, part-owner of Cubana, said: “I’m so pleased to have won because ‘best night out’ encompasses everything: music, food, dance and that’s what we wanted to create. I’m delighted that people love our food and all other aspects of Cubana.”

Best Oriental Patoo Thai

Best Indian Prithi Raj

Best Italian Vito’s

Having won Best Newcomer in 2011 and Best Oriental last year, Patoo Thai has gone from strength to strength in the last few years. Now established as one of Sheffield’s favourite Thai restaurants, it blends authentic cuisine with beautiful décor and friendly staff. Owner Jariya Sancunakorn said, “I’ve enjoyed this year at the awards more. The competition in this category has been tougher, but our business has improved and we always have lots of great customers.”

Prithi Raj’s outstanding service and consistently excellent food has secured the title of Best Indian restaurant for a second successful year. Owner and manager Mizan Rahman thanked his loyal customers and his talented chefs. He said: “We have had a fantastic response from the public since we opened and it is good to know that the critics like us too. It’s terrific to win two years in a row – I’m keeping my fingers crossed for next year!”

For sheer consistency at the Westside Awards it is hard to match Vito’s. This welcoming traditional trattoria on South Road, Walkley has been a multi-award winner over the years, including being named our Readers’ Choice and also Best Family Friendly. “I feel fantastic,” he said. “Being named as Best Italian makes this a special night, not just for me but the whole team. They work so hard, and without them we would not have won this or any of our previous awards.” Westside Restaurant Awards 2015

Best Young Chef Tom Alberts, The Tickled Trout At just 22 sous chef Tom Alberts is cooking up a storm. He was nominated by Tickled Trout owner Chris Mapp who said: “Not only does he respond well to pressure and gives creative input into new dishes, he understands the business inside out and is meticulous at costing all the menus.” Tom added: “I was so pleased to be put forward for the award and it’s fantastic to actually win. I’ve had a passion for food since a young age and when I heard Chris was setting up The Tickled Trout I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”

Readers’ Choice Award The Tickled Trout Owner of Barlow’s fabulous Tickled Trout, Chris Mapp, was delighted to win the approval of Westside readers. “We’ve come a long way to make it something quite special and we feel ecstatic to have won. I’m immensely proud of my team and I couldn’t have done it without the support of them, my partner and family. We run the restaurant like a family and my staff are proud to work for us, they are wonderful people and enjoy what they do and make sure the service is tip-top.”

Books The Pig Dog Tails Sheffield journalist Becky Ward has published The Pig Dog Tails – an illustrated collection of bedtime stories for children, based on the adventures of a loveable rescue dog with a taste for mischief. Five short stories follow Pig Dog as she is placed in a Shelter For Abandoned Puppies after her first owner, the disagreeable Old Man Grainger, fails to appreciate her attempts at helping with the gardening and playing hide the slipper. This is just the start of her eventful journey as she moves into a new home with a much nicer owner, tries to befriend the unfriendly Mister Cat, is reunited with a friend from the shelter, visits a poodle parlour with a difference and discovers a secret garden. Each of the stories is a five-minute read, making them perfect for bedtime. The Pig Dog Tails is available now at Amazon.co.uk.

WS Eating Out Words and photography: Chris Wilson

It’s most definitely a country pub, but the sky-high standard of the food makes it well worth seeking out.

A touch of real class

T

here can be few nicer ways to while away a summer’s evening than dinner at The Devonshire Arms, Middle Handley. On one such evening, as sunshine streamed through the windows of this beautifully renovated country pub, my companion and I discovered that exceptional cooking at very moderate prices make this a venue well worth seeking out. Not that it takes much finding... this much-loved ‘foodie pub’ may have the quiet, relaxed feel of being well off the beaten track, but it’s a short, simple run out for anyone in the Sheffield, Chesterfield or Bakewell regions. The dining room, a relaxed and spacious affair with pale wooden floors and splashes of colour from the paintings on the walls and the soft furnishings, is informal and elegant. There’s also a separate bar, which diners are encouraged to use too (“we are a pub” runs the reminder on the menu, and there are always some excellent local real ales to choose). They undoubtedly are a pub. But, while there are a couple of pub classics on the menu, there is also some very classy cooking going on in the open kitchen. After some excellent freshly baked bread, our meal started on a high. My potato and wild garlic veloute was simply superb – a super soup. The vivid green

WESTSIDE 90

colour masked a gentle, deep savoury taste and the scattering of hon-shimeji mushrooms and sprinkling of curry oil made it a complex dish to savour. Thank goodness I’d saved a piece of that excellent bread – this bowl of goodness demanded a mopping-up of every last drop. Equally impressive was a wonderfully assembled starter of Devonshire brown crab with Wye Valley asparagus and pancetta crumble – beautifully cooked, skilfully assembled, a joy to look at and quickly devoured. For mains, my Madgetts Farm duckling was tender, with crisp bok choy, delicious satay sauce and pickled mango to cut through the richness. My companion’s rib of beef, served with ox cheek, mushroom and blue cheese salad, was juicy and perfectly pink – to overcook meat of this quality would be a crime. Side dishes included triple-cooked chips that were just about the crispiest, tastiest chips we had ever tasted. Whatever you order, don’t miss out on this guilty pleasure. The sweet finale maintained the skyhigh standards of taste and presentation. A melange of dark chocolate fondant, biscuit, peanut and dark cherry crème, and a vanilla mascarpone mille-feuille with apricot and cardamom jelly, were proper grown-up puddings. With a varied and very reasonably priced wine list, including a good selection by the glass or 500ml carafe, and some decent beers too, The Devonshire Arms is an outstanding country pub that does not require a trek into the middle of nowhere. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you really are missing out on something special.

Pie or pea? Ça ne fait rien

T

he pronunciation of Piedaniels in Bakewell is often discussed, but the welcome and the cuisine is unmistakeably French. The restaurant, nestled inconspicuously among the local stone buildings on a quiet street in charming Bakewell, offers an á la carte menu with a select choice of six starters, mains and desserts. The dishes, created by proprietor and head chef Eric, are innovative and his Gallic flair and passion for cooking using local ingredients shows throughout the menu. There is also an alternative fixed price menu available lunchtimes and evenings, Tuesday to Thursday. The wine list is extensive and, though predominately French, there is room for wines from New Zealand, Portugal and Argentina. On the evening my wife Jill and I visited, we were welcomed into the lounge bar by Eric’s wife Christina, who takes care of front of house. The restaurant was a real surprise. The pastel lemon and gold décor offers a light and airy feel and purveys an elegance more familiar in a Paris restaurant. The tables are spaced well apart and the restaurant has a

quietly sophisticated ambience. When the food was served, the serious enjoyment began. The presentation of the dishes was of the highest quality; each one a picture on a plate. My soufflé (double baked) was light with a delicate crispy surface. The flavour of the Roquefort was gentle but the walnut sauce was stunning – full of nutty flavours and really creamy. Jill’s duck rillettes came with a cucumber relish, which wondefully counteracted the richness of the smooth duck and its accompanying toasted brioche. We anticipated further Gallic flair in the main courses and were not disappointed. My generous portion of pink lamb cutlets were joined by potatoes just minted enough to give the dish its character, along with a delicate gravy. Jill’s beef fillet was cooked pink as requested and the bordelaise sauce was smooth and complemented the tender beef perfectly. To accompany the meat dishes, I chose a bottle of Lirac; a full-bodied Rhone wine from a lesser known region. Its depth of flavour and smoothness did not disappoint. The presentation of the puddings was another delight. My trio of desserts provided a range of flavours and textures and I particularly liked the light mascarpone cream with plum compote. Jill’s crepe suzette, set alight with flaming liqueur, was an exciting way to complete the meal and offered a beautifully traditional taste of France. We will no doubt return shortly for another Gallic experience of delightfully presented cuisine – and it won’t be pie or peas.

WS Eating Out

A meal at Maranello’s is a gastronomic tour around the foodie delights of a country which has produced some of the world’s favourite food. Words and photography: Fiona Barber

Alfredo Geci and his team at Maranellos

The essence of Italy

F

ew countries are quite as famous for their cuisine as Italy. Their culinary influence has ensured pizza and pasta have become firm favourites among us Brits, but a true taste of Italy presents far more than just these carb-heavy dishes. Each of Italy’s regions has their own specialities and ways of cooking, and in a bid to provide customers in Sheffield with a taste of this, Alfredo Geci – owner of Maranello’s on Ecclesall Road – offers a menu that captures the essence of the many different regions. The extensive selection includes all kinds of meats, fish, seafood and vegetarian options, as well as a varied daily specials board. To start, I had the asparagi con prosciutto – a flavoursome combination of tender asparagus infused with butter, garlic and parsley, topped with black pepper, prosciutto and balsamic vinegar glaze – an ideal light-but-tasty start to the evening. My partner opted for the lobster ravioli special and enjoyed sizeable pasta parcels filled with luxurious lobster accompanied by a fresh tomato and basil sauce, which wonderfully offset the savoury flavours. Steaks are a big deal here, and as well as various cuts of meat, there’s a fabulous combination of toppings available. I chose the filetto San Daniele, a tender fillet steak cooked in a garlic-infused tomato sauce, topped with mozzarella and Parma ham – a fantastic indulgent meat feast. My partner’s salmon fillet was beautifully cooked and came served with a generous portion of succulent tiger prawns and a lovely selection of seasonal vegetables. As a

WESTSIDE 98

seafood lover, she relished in every element of the dish. We took a short break from our indulgence and caught a few moments with Alfredo. He came to Sheffield 15 years ago in search of a new challenge and his adventure took him to Castle College, where he completed a course in catering and hospitality and ever since, his passion has been food. On Alfredo’s recommendation our feast concluded in true Italian style with a homemade tiramisu and a glass filled with custard, chocolate and pistachio gelato, topped with crushed pistachio praline. The restaurant is relatively small, but this just adds to its charm, and there’s an additional area upstairs, which accommodates up to 40 people. The rustic décor of exposed bricks and gothic chandeliers, together with an innovative menu and Italian staff, offers a true authentic slice of Italy. I’ve never been to the boot-shaped country, but at least now I’ve had a taste.

s destination restaurants go, they probably don’t come much better – or quirkier – than Rajdhani, which is housed in the old Dore train station building. Having opened in September last year, the Indian/Bangladeshi restaurant has quickly made a favourable impression. The building has pedigree as a restaurant, having housed the popular Dave Allen-owned Delhi Junction, but stood empty for five years before being given a new lease of life by the team behind Rajdhani. And they’ve done a tremendous job. Large windows and high ceilings make the restaurant light and airy while mauvecoloured wallpaper, stylish black and white train-themed prints and dark wooden tables with contrasting white napkins and silver cutlery give the space a contemporary edge. Despite our visit coinciding with perhaps the first real barbecue evening of the summer, the restaurant soon filled up. Once seated in our booth, with views over the platform, one of the first things we noticed was the amazing smells coming from the kitchen. Hungry with anticipation, I can only imagine this is some mild form of food torture for the commuters who use the station on a daily basis. We started with crunchy poppadoms – both plain and spicy – and a six-dish pickle tray before tucking into the main event. We were happy to let owner Afzal Miah guide us

through our selections, which included entrees of murgh kolezee (chicken livers cooked with roasted onions and served in a puree bread) and ayer fish bhaji. Seafood features heavily on the Rajdhani menu, a nod to the restaurant’s Bangladeshi roots, where fish is used plentifully. It was the first time I’d tried ayer but I found its meatiness stood up well to the spicy flavours – a good start. For mains we tried gosht Hyderabadi, a spicy lamb dish with caramelised onions and red peppers and Afzal’s personal favourite king prawn dish. And good choices they were too. The lamb was fall-apart tender with a generous kick of chilli while the Rajdhani king prawns were meaty and flavoursome. The sauce, spiced with green chillies, tomato and onions was delicious and eagerly mopped up the sweet and crispy garlic naan. Accompaniments of chana aloo (chickpeas and potatoes) and onion rice completed the feast. Desserts rarely feature heavily on an Indian restaurant menu but we indulged in some traditional kulfi (mango on this occasion) and spiced Chai-like tea, a great finish to a lovely meal. Afzal was quick to play down the initial success of Rajdhani, insisting their journey has only just begun. Which hopefully means there’s much more to come. ] Rajdhani also offers a takeaway service, perfect for those hungry commuters who can pick up their favourite meal on their way home.

Read on to find out more from each of our experts…

Hallamshire Physiotherapy Steve Hodgson Like many physiotherapists, Steve Hodgson, director of Hallamshire Physiotherapy believes in addressing the root cause of a problem rather than simply treating the pain. “We recognise that pain is a complicated issue and that rubbing, cracking joints or trying to activate the ‘mythical core’ does not give a long-term solution.” Steve has worked as a clinician and lecturer for over 20 years and has a PhD in the rehabilitation of shoulder fractures. His main area of interest is in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, but he also has a keen interest in the role that fear plays in preventing or slowing recovery. “Some people might say: I can't bend as my spine is displaced, I have knee arthritis and can't walk, or, my core is weak so I avoid lifting. The underlying factor with these people, which is preventing recovery or normal function, is fear. “Our belief about our body is fundamental to our ability to recover and fear drives us to rest, avoid painful activities and take medication to help ease our symptoms.” From research and clinical experience Steve knows this approach does not help.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

He says: “As we become more fearful, anxiety levels increase and we compensate by limping. This general guarding of the injured part actually increases the pain as tissues become sensitised and results in more rest and so the vicious circle continues.” Movement and fear are inextricably linked and when these new patterns are learnt it is hard to change. For example, if you break your leg and limp along, months, or even years later, you may continue to walk incorrectly even though the fracture has healed. “The problem is, you don't realise you are limping as your brain has adjusted to this new

Mr Chimney Matthew Rhodes As director of MR Chimney Services, Matthew Rhodes has one of the less conventional jobs of the 21st century. But for anyone unhappy in a career who is afraid to make the move to a different profession, Matthew is a prime example of how taking that leap can be life changing. “I’d been working in IT for 15 years and got fed up and wanted to do something for myself, something more creative.” When Matthew’s wife bought him a wood burner for his birthday, they employed a chimney sweep to clear out the fire place. “I got talking to him about what it’s like doing that sort of work and I thought, I could do that.” After completing all the necessary qualifications and health and safety training, Matthew established MR Chimney Services in 2013 and has never looked back. Matthew is a member of the Guild of Master Sweeps and provides an exceptional and thorough service, which includes providing insurance company recognised sweeping certificates with every visit. He and his team offer expert advice and

competitive quotes free of charge, helping you choose the ideal solid fuel installation for your home. The HETAS (the official body recognised by government to approve biomass and solid fuel heating appliances) qualified team carry out fuss-free expert installations. All work is guaranteed, fully insured and accompanied by accredited certification and registration. The all-inclusive service provides support throughout the whole process, from designing the installation and helping you pick the perfect wood burner, to supplying the stove at an unbeatable price, and carrying out all building and alteration work.

Weddings attended with good luck brought! Michelle Cooper Acclaimed Family Law How did you end up in this type of business? After doing my law degree, I ended up as a trainee solicitor at a firm where the family partner had just left to become a judge. He left behind a large case load, so I was well and truly thrown in the deep end and never looked back. I must have a slightly masochistic streak as I found I thrive on having to think on my feet in court under pressure and helping people who are often going through a very stressful and traumatic time, not to mention sorting out complex and urgent cases. Why is it important to seek out the best possible advice in your particular line of work? Everyday I see people who have tried to represent themselves, usually to disastrous effect. Every day I see people do that in a family law situation. Sometimes people bring me a final financial order they have agreed to without having had any advice, which they have realised has left them in a financially detrimental situation. However, once this has been rubber stamped by the Court it is very difficult if not impossible to change. What specific expertise can you offer our readers? We offer free advice via a half hour free interview and a telephone helpline. I would urge anyone with

Gloria Havenhand Medibee Ltd Gloria Havenhand is a chief bee-keeper, biologist and owner of Medibee Ltd, a company that has three bee farms in the Peak District and specialists in antibacterial honeys. Her love of bees goes back as long as she can remember. “My grandmother had two hives and I was at her knee around them from a very young age and I had a deep yearning to keep bees on a grand scale. It is an absolute joy to see and hear busy bees all around the acres of flowers and hedgerows at Troway Hall.” Gloria began her career lecturing in biology and genetics. Now as a chief beekeeper she explains and predicts the behaviour of the bees, which is paramount for the farms’ success. Working with bees naturally comes with risks. Each hive has around 50,000 bees in it and 600 stings will kill you. Gloria advises those that are new to the industry to be an apprentice to an experienced bee keeper for at least a year and to always wear a good protective bee suit. It’s no secret that honey has long been used for its medicinal benefits and Medibee honeys are currently being analysed for their activity against many bacteria at Sheffield

Nick Crouch Tec-Nick Autos Ltd Nick Crouch left school at 16, completed an apprentice at Peter Gilder Audi in Sheffield and after 11 years working at Audi he launched his own business, Tec-Nick Autos Ltd. Ever since, he has been providing dealer-level, specialist Audi,VW, Seat and Skoda services, repairs and diagnostic fault finding at an affordable price. “Our aim is to be the go-to repair centre for the VW and Audi group vehicles,” Nick says. “We give our customers a personal and professional service. It’s important all of our clients are happy and fully understand the work that has been done to their vehicles, so they can drive away with con~fidence. Customers appreciate the personal attention we provide and they are always able to speak to the technician who has been working on their vehicle.” Nick works with a team of expert technicians, who all have a vast knowledge of the VW and Audi brand. With car technology constantly advancing it can be difficult for garages to keep up. But Tec-Nick Autos have invested heavily to ensure they stay one step ahead. “We offer anything from servicing and new sets of tyres, to ecu remaps and complex diagnostic work, which can solve problems that others may not have been able to pinpoint. Whatever your vehicle requires, just give us a call – chances are we can do it.” The company is going from strength to strength, so much so, that plans are well under way for a second repair center in Sheffield – look out for news of an opening date. 110 Duchess Road, Sheffield, S2 4Bl Tel: 0114 2754 189 or 07841 910 611

Harder, better, faster, stronger… Jordan Cutforth checks out the latest performance upgrades. Black magic No, this isn’t another hardcore version of one of Mercedes’ already hardcore AMG cars. No, this is a special edition that Porsche has created for its base 911 Carrera. Changes over the regular 911 Carrera include a completely black exterior with 20-inch 911 Turbo style alloy wheels. Standard equipment includes auto-dimming rear-view mirrors, rain sensing windscreen wipers, cruise control, automatic climate control, heated leather seats, sport designed steering wheel and Porsche Communication Management (PCM) which includes a seven-inch colour touchscreen with satellite navigation. As it’s based on the base 911 Carrera, it’ll only be powered by a 350hp 3.4-litre straight-six engine with the option of two or four-wheel drive and in coupe or convertible body styles. On sale now from £75,074.

Joy of six BMW has released a new ‘Competition Pack’ for the M6. The main highlight is a significant power upgrade of 40hp from the standard M6 making total output now 592hp. Torque has also been uprated rising to 516lb ft from 501lb fit. This has improved the performance figures no end: 0-62mph now takes 3.9 seconds or 4.0 seconds for the Cabriolet, 0124mph now takes 11.8 seconds (over half a second quicker than the standard car) and there’s a new top speed of 189mph if you choose to disable the electronic limiter. Other changes include stiffer springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, a new mapping for the steering system, new 20-inch alloys and black chrome quad exhausts. No word on a price yet but it’s available from July.

Competitive edge

R-rated Jaguar?

The 595 Competizione is a spiced-up version of the already mad Fiat 500 Abarth. However, Fiat thinks the ordinary 595 isn’t enough so they’ve increased the power output and added a host of standard equipment. Power has been raised by 20hp from 160hp making the total output of the 595 to 180hp with 184lb ft of torque. This makes the 595 sprint from 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds with a 140mph top speed. It can even do 48.7mpg on the combined cycle. Standard equipment now includes a Record Monza exhaust system, 17-inch alloys with titanium finish, a race-bred Brembo braking system, red brake calipers, Sabelt sports seats, Xenon headlamps and parking sensors. Prices start at £19,890 for the hatch, £21,890 for the Cabriolet. On sale now.

Upon the arrival of the new Jaguar XE, the fastest version you can buy is the XE-S which houses the same 335bhp supercharged V6 found in the entry-level F-Type. While this model is undoubtedly fast, it can’t match the halo models made by rival companies BMW and MercedesBenz which are considerably more powerful. As a result, Jaguar’s got a hot version of the XE in the pipeline to take the fight to the unsuspecting Germans. It’s called the XE-R, and while it hasn’t been made official, it’ll most likely come with the 488bhp V8 found in the F-Type roadster. There’ll be a more focused chassis, and an eight-speed ZF automatic will be the only choice. Expect prices to hover around the M3’s £56,000 mark.

‘THE BUBBLE’ From fine art to fantastic beaches and 24-hour party people, there are plenty of reasons why Tel Aviv is becoming THE short break destination of choice, writes Chris Wilson.

A

snapshot of Tel Aviv is likely to contain at least three of the following: a spectacular seafront with palm trees and golden sands, beautifully preserved Bauhaus architecture, ultra-modern tower blocks, building sites, leafy boulevards... and a handful of impossibly cool dressed-down twenty-somethings making an art form out of doing nothing in particular. This is the city that took a long, hard look at the political and religious strife that most of the world associates with Israel, and decided it would rather throw a party instead. They call it The Bubble, and it’s easy to see why. Well, that’s one side of the story, and if you are looking for a short break destination

WESTSIDE 118

that provides brilliant beaches, shopping, smart restaurants, and a relentless dusk ‘til dawn nightlife you won’t be disappointed. You will, however, only be getting half the story. Tel Aviv is certainly big and brash, with an ever-changing skyline thanks to the huge number of very tall buildings being thrown up to cope with a booming population and vibrant business culture – but appearances can be deceptive. The “anything goes” culture that makes this city a magnet for the modern world’s 24hour party people, has also created a haven for artists, designers and creative minds, a point that was very much brought home to me as soon as I checked in to the Artplus Hotel. This chic and understated hotel (blink Â

and you’ll miss the entrance) is dedicated to Israeli art. Five local artists were commissioned to create the murals that set the tone for the décor on each of the five floors. Retro-style furniture combines with clean modern design. My own room was a white cube with splashes of red acrylic paint on canvas designed by acclaimed local artist Elfrat Gal Nur. All rooms provide scribbling pads and coloured crayons, encouraging guests to catch the mood and get creative. With video installations on the stairwells and a ‘virtual’ Persian-style carpet projected onto the lobby floor, I found the whole set-up great fun. The location is hard to beat. You may not get a sea view but it is a two-minute stroll to Tel Aviv beach and the beachfront promenade. They also do great breakfasts and have a happy hour with nibbles and wine for guests every afternoon. Whether you are here to soak up the culture, hit the beach or crawl the bars, Artplus is the ideal base for your stay. If you want to get to grips with what is happening in Tel Aviv right now, head for the Sarona Complex. Hyped as the New City of Tel Aviv, it is a mix of unique Tel Aviv architectural history and a fusion of urban experiences, incorporating art, culture, entertainment and leisure. Despite the relentless building programme, huge efforts are being made to renovate and preserve. In the Templer settlement, one of the first modern agricultural settlements in Palestine dating back to the 1870s, we stumbled across an immaculately preserved olive press alongside a very cool modern wine bar built into the basement of one of the old dwellings. Often when a city embarks on a massive modernisation programme like this – and the corporate world is pouring millions into the new business-minded Tel Aviv – alternative lifestyles are marginalised and the result is a sterile banality. Not here, where street art

“The ‘anything goes’ culture that makes this city a magnet for the modern world’s 24-hour party people, has also created a haven for artists, designers and creative minds.” (graffiti if you prefer) thrives. These aren’t just chancers with a few cans of spray paint. Committed artists like Maya Gelfman, a 37-year-old who has been exhibited at art fairs around the world, can take weeks working on complex, striking designs that all carry her tell-tale heart signature. There are many more like her. From the overtly political to the simply pretty, this unofficial art is as much a part of the cityscape as the sleek new office blocks and the cool bars. For something slightly less cerebral, take a stroll along the waterfront. From the billionaire’s boy toy yachts in the harbour to the surfers and beach volleyball aficionados, it’s the perfect setting to find a café to settle down for a spot of people watching. I didn’t spot any dog grooming parlours but they must exist, judging by the number of primped pooches strutting alongside their owners. For a more traditional take on Israeli life a visit to Jaffa is a must. Home of the Artists Quarter, also known as Yafo, this is the ancient port city out of which Tel Aviv has now grown. Jaffa has, in recent years, been regenerated with the old narrow streets and courtyards becoming another highly desirable

part of Tel Aviv’s urban tapestry. The narrow passageways and ancient buildings in the Old City of Jaffa are worlds away from modern Tel Aviv, and if you’ve had a hectic Saturday night the quiet cafes serving the most fantastic coffee and freshly squeezed pomegranate juice provide the perfect Sunday morning pick-me-up. Jaffa is also home to the brilliant, barmy Bet Ilana Gur Museum, which exhibits original sculptures and designs of the artist Ilana Gur and also serves as her private home. The museum building stands on a hill in Old Jaffa with breathtaking views of the new city and the Mediterranean. The museum’s collections boast works of art both from Israel and throughout the world; sculptures by Henry Moore, ethnic art from Africa and South America, experimental art from around the world. Eclectic is the word and Gur the collector clearly favours art with a strong sense of self-expression. Even if you are not an art fanatic the views from the roof of the museum, back across to Tel Aviv, are mesmerising. It’s the perfect spot to draw breath, try to put everything you’ve seen into some sort of perspective, and plan your next visit.
