WS Legal

Wosskow Brown are ready to help smooth the deal when you’ve found your dream home.

S

pring is just around the corner and with it will come a swathe of new property transactions as more and more people look to buy and sell their homes. Whether you are looking to buy or sell, Wosskow Brown Solicitors is on hand to help with all the legalities. The firm’s team leader of the Residential Property department, Nicola Stone, explains what homeowners can expect in 2015. “Last year was a very busy one for local conveyancers, and it is already looking as though 2015 will be the same. “The local estate agents may say there are not enough properties coming on to the market to replace the stock already sold, and the lenders might say that applications are down, but the spring is coming and there is nothing like a sunny weekend to get buyers out looking for new homes. “To help homeowners enjoy smooth transactions, conveyancers now use technology more than ever, which speeds up the process and helps to keep the costs down. “Government schemes are also helping

to boost the property market. Ninety-five per cent mortgages are being granted again, under the Guaranteed Deposit Scheme. This is great news for first time buyers who may have struggled to save the large sums needed to purchase their home. “In addition, the Help to Buy Equity Loan benefits not only first time buyers, but also families who need to move to accommodate growing families but who don’t have enough equity in their house. They only need a five per cent deposit (which can come from the existing house) and the government will lend 20 per cent interest-free for five years, making the required mortgage 75 per cent. “Though many families are benefiting from this scheme, it also impacts on the whole neighbourhood as it is only applicable to new houses, which generates much-needed employment and brings new spending into the community. “Most buyers are also benefiting from the changes to

Stamp Duty Land Tax, making now a really good time to buy – and therefore also a very good time to sell.” For more information on how Wosskow Brown can help with your move, call Nicola at the Attercliffe Road head office on 0114 256 6587, or pop into your local branch on Gleadless Road. Continuing success

When a local business achieves 40 years of continuous trading it is a milestone worth celebrating... so let’s pop a few corks and say ‘cheers’ as we toast the continuing success story that is Sheffield Window Centre.

I

t was way back in 1975, when Rubik’s Cubes were all the rage and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen topped the charts, that the company was founded. Fast forward 40 years and Ian Hunter, who took over the running of Sheffield Window Centre (SWC) in the early eighties, is

managing director... and with all his four grown-up children also involved, this is a true family business. You don’t last that long in the same city unless you receive consistently excellent feedback from satisfied customers – and as the decades have rolled by, generations of

A family affair... L-R: Ian, Sam, Amy and Ian Hunter

WESTSIDE 12

Sheffield folk have found SWC to be the first, and most reliable, name they look for. SWC was also the first Sheffield business to be given Trusted Trader status by Which?, a nationwide consumer champion website that not only tests products from washing machines to power tools, but also gives local companies a rigorous assessment before naming only the very best on their online directory of recommended trades people. Of course, there have been big changes since 1975 and SWC has stayed at the very top by investing in new machinery, adopting green policies, and constantly researching methods of production to provide the most up-to-date levels of security and thermal efficiency. The one thing that hasn’t changed, and never will, is their “old fashioned” approach to selling. SWC is renowned for its ‘No Pressure Policy’ – leaving customers to decide in their own time. Whether it be price, product, or service – they can’t be beaten and that’s the reason they never need to push or pester. The company, which has premises on Oakbrook Road, Broad Lane, Scotland Street and Rockingham Street, uses top brand

REHAU – a market leader in polymer extrusion – for all their installations. Their multi-chambered profile uPVC doesn’t warp or discolour like so many lesser brands. And if you’re worried you won’t be able to get a frame to match your desired colour or design, don’t be. Frames come in a variety of coloured foils, including cream, black, grey and green, as well as several wood grain colours including rosewood and oak.You can also have your frames sprayed to match any RAL colour – so you’ll have new windows that look exactly how you want them to. Good-looking windows are no good if you can still feel the chill – but thanks to SWC, you won’t feel a thing. Their standard windows have energy efficiency ratings of A, while their standard double-glazed units are made from Pilkington’s KS glass, are argonfilled and incorporate a warm edge spacer bar to retain the heat in your home. It’s not

just about staying cosy, though – energy efficient windows can help you to make big savings on your heating bill. Perhaps the most important thing you want from a window is to know that it’s secure, that it will keep would-be thieves successfully at bay. SWC’s windows are fitted with a multi-point shoot bolt locking mechanism – the best there is. They also fit anti-jemmy devices on all vulnerable opening windows – so you’ve got the peace of mind of knowing that you’ll be as safe as possible. Don’t be misled by the name, by the way – SWC do more than just windows. They offer an expert stained glass service and fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors. These all have Hoppe Security handles fitted as standard – approved by the police, no less – as well as cylinder locks which are anti-pick, drill, snap and bump and again have a multi-point locking system. There’s more, too – specifically, conservatories. Due to the advances in glass specification, SWC can now provide conservatories, which

are suitable for year-round use, thanks to glass which has been specifically designed for the purpose. It offers a wide range of benefits including thermal insulation with solar control, glare reduction, enhanced sound insulation and self-cleaning properties. The company can also install underfloor heating and laminated floors, as well as taking care of the building, plastering and electrical work, so you only deal with one point of contact throughout the entire process. Get in touch with Sheffield Window Centre today – they care about your windows, doors and conservatories just as much as you do. If you don’t manage to blow all your pension on a fast car or a trip to Vegas! How about passing it on to your children and grandchildren free of inheritance tax? Much has been made of the new flexibility coming to the owners of Personal Pensions in April, however “do you know you will now be able to pass your pension pot on to future generations completely free of Inheritance Tax?” Explains Phil Smith Director and co-owner at Hamnett Wealth Management. Never before has it been more important for people to review their pension arrangements and take advice from a firm of qualified INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVISERS. From April owners of personal pensions who are over 55 will have the ability to draw money out of their pension as they wish, the old limits on the amounts that could be taken will be removed. You can take a quarter of your entire pension pot tax free, either in one go or in phases, with the remainder being taxed as income in the year it is taken. However not all pension schemes will offer the full flexibility the new legislation provides. If you have a pension that you have held for a number of years, it’s likely that changes will need to be made to that pension before the full flexibility available can be accessed. The new legislation provides pension holders with much more choice than before, however there are pitfalls and unnecessary tax that may be incurred if things are not done properly. The Chancellor of the Exchequer will be very happy if you simply cash in your whole pension in one go. But why would you? This is likely to mean you

incur a large tax bill and the money has been taken out of one of the most tax efficient investment vehicles available. It may be far more beneficial to withdraw money as and when you need it, thus keeping any taxation to a minimum and retaining unused funds in a tax efficient investment. Whatever your individual needs you must take professional Independent financial advice, it could end up saving you thousands of pounds. Another major benefit of the new legislation is the changes on how personal pensions will be taxed on death. If the owner of a personal pension dies before they reach age 75, then their unused pension fund can be passed on to whoever they nominate free of Inheritance Tax. It doesn’t stop there because the nominated beneficiaries can then withdraw from the fund as and when they wish free of all tax. Death of a personal pension owner post age 75 again allows the fund to be passed on free of Inheritance Tax, to whoever the pension holder nominates. The fund can be accessed by the beneficiaries as and when they wish and will be taxed as income in their hands. The pension fund can then be passed on to the next generation on the death of the first nominee and on and on through the years. For some people whose estates will be subject to Inheritance

Tax it may be beneficial to stop spending money from their pensions now and spend other assets to help preserve the amount that can be handed down to loved ones on death. Again not all pensions will offer the full benefits available under the new legislation, so you need to ensure your pension fund is held in the right type of pension plan. In summary the new legislation offers people a great deal more options and some major benefits. The new rules as always with pensions are complicated, if you make the wrong decision it could be very costly. Make sure you speak to us before taking any action. Peter moves to Redbrik Redbrik gets ready to launch its third branch at Crystal Peaks – with a well-known face at the helm. Here we take a look at why Redbrik is fast becoming the go to independent estate agent in the region and why choosing the right agent is so important.

L

eading Sheffield property expert Peter Lee has brought his 21 years of experience in the property business to the ever-expanding team at Redbrik Estate Agency. Peter, aged 37, is hugely respected amongst his peers in the industry and joins the team at Redbrik which has quickly emerged as a shining new light on the Sheffield and North Derbyshire property scene. Formerly with Blundells, where he built his career, Peter has a wealth of understanding of the local area, wide-ranging property knowledge and desire for exceptional customer service – something which Redbrik pride themselves on. Peter will oversee Redbrik’s exciting expansion into the South East area of the city, with a new branch opening, based in Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre, this Spring. Redbrik was launched in 2013 by directors Mark Ross and Julie Bulheller. Expansion has seen the appointment of a third director, Michael Parry, and a staff team which has grown to 15 at the offices in Glumangate, Chesterfield, Abbeydale Road, Millhouses and now Crystal Peaks. Peter said: “I am very excited at the prospect of helping Redbrik to be even more successful for its customers and clients. “I have worked across the entire property spectrum helping people realise

WESTSIDE 26

their property ambitions in residential sales, lettings and new homes, as well as in working with investors and developers, which is something I am keen to further with Redbrik. “I am very passionate about customer service and putting the needs of my clients first and I know this is also the Redbrik ethos. I am very much looking forward to spearheading Redbrik’s expansion in Sheffield and making the Crystal Peaks branch a great success. Redbrik director Mark Ross added: “We are delighted that Peter has joined our team at such an important time for our business. “Since we established the company, two years ago, we have been working hard to provide our clients with a customer focused approach to buying and selling property across Sheffield and North Derbyshire and we know Peter shares this philosophy.” Peter’s appointment at Redbrik follows the announcement that well known property specialist Jed Furniss has also joined the team. Jed is working from both the Millhouses and Chesterfield offices, looking to help people sell and buy in the Peak District and South West Sheffield. He said: “This is a great opportunity to become involved with a forward thinking independent business that has created a real name for itself.

Q. How will Redbrik’s marketing of my property make a difference? A. Even in this market properties don’t sell themselves. Our knowledge, service and presentation get the results vendors deserve. First impressions count and we want every property on our books to look its absolute best. Our stunning brochures, floor plans, high-resolution photographs, coupled with expert staging advice will highlight your home’s best features and attract buyers. We only use professional photographers who understand the Redbrik philosophy of creating beautiful lifestyle images to capture the character of your home. Q. Will I achieve the asking price for my property? A: Here at Redbrik our results simply speak for themselves. Through our skilled negotiation, superb marketing and beautiful presentation, we understand how to get you the best price. We achieve 98.9 per cent of our asking price for our clients, with an average property sale time of just 49 days. Q. Do Redbrik provide good customer service and keep me updated? A: Fantastic service is what our customers value most and so it’s key to everything we do. All estate agents say they offer good service, but many don’t have their customer’s needs at heart. Our team do not work to any imposed targets, so they are able to go the extra mile and offer responsive, flexible and friendly service. All of our staff have considerable experience and most importantly are nice, friendly folk who give 100 per cent for you.

WHITEHORNES SHEFFIELDS FASTEST GROWING INDEPENDENT ESTATE AGENT The new year has started at the same pace as 2014 finished with an increase in volume of sales in comparison with the same time last year. New stock is attracting record levels of interest as we continue to see a shift away from this traditionally quiet time of the year. This is due in part to more clients being internet savvy and searching for properties on line and booking viewings from the comfort of their own homes. We have taken advantage of this growing trend by incorporating all multi-media tools available to us to maximise properties exposure on the internet including Rightmove, Face Book, Twitter and Pinterest. We are achieving the asking price, and above, in record time as demand continues to out-strip supply.

If you’re running out of space in the home, why not extend into the garden? Help is at hand from Dore Garden Offices.

H

aving too little space in your home can be frustrating on a daily basis. Although there are hundreds of nifty storage options available, sometimes it’s just not enough – like when you require a whole new room, for example. Whether it’s office space, a workshop, or a home cinema, instead of dealing with the hassle and cost of a house extension, why not build a room in your garden instead? Dore Garden Offices are Sheffield’s only garden building specialists. The company was established in 2011 by Adam Reynolds, who decided after 15 years as a sculptor, to swap metal for wood and use his skills to create beautiful spaces within gardens. “It all started from one photo; I built my own garden office and from that I got one job and then another three after that – then the business was formed.” Adam now works with three others: Dave Burkett, a project manager with a background in carpentry, Ben Grafton, a former artist with an eye for detail and creativity and Tim Collings, a playground building expert who installed the playground at Millhouses Park.

Together they offer a comprehensive landscaping package and a bespoke tailormade garden room building service – whatever you have in mind, they can create it. And if reading this conjures up images of draughty, leaking sheds, then stop right there, because everything – from the insulation and roof, to the doors, window and internal finish – is completed to make the outdoor build feel just like another room in your home. For those looking for ultimate luxury, there are timber options such as Cedar and Larch. And for the interior, choose from an impressive selection, including LED down lights, under floor heating, internet/phone/television cable, double entrances, electricity and UPVC doors and windows. Although they still do build many garden offices, since they began four years ago the

company has also constructed garden musical workshops, many children’s hobbit holes and art workspaces. The possibilities are endless. Dore Garden Offices serve any area within 30 miles of Dore and each project typically takes around three weeks to complete. If you require a professional service offering a cost effective, high-spec finish, then Dore Garden Offices is just what you’re looking for. Window Spec specialises in top-end composite windows that have the appearance of traditional wood at a fraction of the price.

The look of luxury Testimonials Andy Farthing, Ranmoor Our house was built in the late 1700s and needs quite a bit of regeneration. Andy has replaced about half of all the windows in UPVC, but the ones in the kitchen face outwards, so the visual aspect was very important to us. We overlook a conservation area and wanted to be sympathetic to the property, so we choose Residence 9 windows. We couldn’t be happier with the look and Andy’s service; I’d recommend him and the product to anyone. Pete Mirvyn, Ranmoor I was keen to maintain the look of traditional wooden windows and thought I had to get wood, but Andy showed me the Residence 9 windows and they looked fantastic. I never thought I would have bought plastic windows for the house, but I’m very satisfied that I did. It took just two days to fit seven windows and I’m extremely happy with them. They look even better than the wooden ones we had fitted previously.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

f you’re a proud homeowner who takes great care in the appearance of your house, then you’ll know that the look of the exterior is just as important as the interior. Besides the brickwork, roof and garden, windows are a focal point of any building. Timber windows are a popular choice because of the authentic finish but, as always, luxury comes with a hefty price tag. Fortunately, for those looking for style on an affordable budget, there is a product that has been designed to replicate the popular 19th century flush timber Andy Holmes sash window. Residence 9 is designed by craftsmen and is manufactured from modern composite materials. Andy Holmes, owner of local window fitting company Window Spec, says he was massively impressed when he discovered the brand. “I always try and provide my customers with what they want and many of them were requesting timber windows but were put off by the price. Residence 9 is a really good quality product and it has saved some of my clients a fortune.” The windows are extruded into strong, thermally efficient shapes and finished in a

I

choice of authentic woodgrain textures and colours – no sanding and painting is necessary. But what really sets Residence 9 apart is frame design – the thickness and strength of these frames are superior to many others on the market. Fitting such a design requires finesse and attention and can only be executed by individuals who are masters of their trade. Every Residence 9 window is specially made to your requirements – you can customise everything including the style colour and hardware. Andy, who has worked in the industry for 25 years, says: “The system can even be used in conservation areas because of its authentic appearance and is suitable for any homeowner who wants a top-end luxury window brand.” As well as fitting windows, Window Spec deals with repairs, gutters, doors, porches and rooflines and they are Fensa (government authorised) registered, so you know you’re in safe hands. Window Spec covers any area from Sheffield to Stockport and most customers come through recommendation. Andy says: “I try and offer the best advice and the whole package.” Window Spec 84 Bushey Wood Road, Sheffield, S17 3QB Tel: 0114 236 9031 Mob: 07729 174080 window.spec@gmail.com www.windowspec.com

The Knights of Malta’s baroque Auberge de Castille, guarded by cannons, leads to the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Perched high on Valletta’s bastion walls, the gardens offer panoramic views over the Grand Harbour and across the water to Fort St Angelo and the knights’ first capital in Malta. St John’s Co-Cathedral is plain on the outside, but within is a dazzling array of baroque gold, marble and paint, as well as two world famous Caravaggio paintings. Further afield but still easily tackled as a half-day trip, you can pick up a bus or taxi to Mnajdra and Hagar Qim prehistoric temples, some of the oldest stone buildings in the world. Close to the temples is a swimming spot popular with locals, Ghar Lapsi, a great place for a dip in Malta’s clear blue waters. Another ‘must’ visit is Mdina, Malta’s first capital and still a small medieval-style citadel city, full of historic buildings. Evening is a lovely time to wander here. The crowds have gone and the labyrinth of tiny alleys is quiet and atmospheric. If all that sightseeing makes you weary, head back to the Fortina Spa Resort for a cocktail and dinner. Whatever the reason for your visit, it is the ultimate destination. For more information go to www.fortinasparesort.com Tel: 0800 917 3001

A career in fashion Fashion’s future stars are finding their feet at Sheffield Hallam University as they take steps to a career in design. We went behind the scenes.

imply walking down the corridors of Sheffield Hallam’s fashion department provides enough to inspiration to grab an HB and attempt something fantastically futuristic. The walls, lined with the achievements of former students, are a reminder to the current crop of what can be – and has – been achieved from a starting point within these very walls. For example, one was snapped up by Ralph Lauren, another is running her own successful bridalwear business. Down the corridor and into the workshop, third-year students with tape measures draped round their shoulders are working on designs scattered in front of them, or hunched over sewing machines working tirelessly on their final collections –

all overseen by a dozen half-dressed mannequins. For those of us unfamiliar with the ins and outs of the fashion industry, what goes on behind the scenes is a complete mystery. I was there to find out exactly what it means to get a degree in fashion design; what skills you need, how do you break into such a competitive industry, and how do you teach something that changes with each season? On my visit I was lucky enough to speak to a man who could answer all of these questions and more: fashion design course leader David Morrish. Despite being relatively new to the post there’s no question David is the right man for the job. From detailed doodles of garments and mannequins in GCSE art, to an interest in clothes from a young age, David seemed

She says her biggest inspiration is her grandmother. “She taught me how to sew and to be creative. She sadly passed away just as I launched my business in December 2013. My latest bridal collection is inspired by and named after her.” When Kelly began the SHU design course had no idea she’d set up her own bridal business afterwards. “My degree taught me my craft and the skills I needed to become a successful designer. Every module I did throughout my time at university gave me the opportunity to develop existing and new skills, which I am able to use in my business today.” Kelly’s graduate collection won a Creative Sparks runner-up prize and was featured in British Vogue. She was also a finalist in the student designer of the year category. “My proudest achievement is having my work featured in both British and Italian Vogue after just two months of setting up my own company.” For further information on KMR Bespoke Bridal Designer or to contact Kelly email kelly@kmrbespokebridal.co.uk, call 07526 285881 or visit her website www.kmrbespokebridal.co.uk

WS Fashion destined to make a mark in the fashion industry. His impressive resume includes many accolades, including winner of the public award for The Hat Designer of the Year 2010 and finalist of the British Fashion Council Design Award. David has a particular interest in tailoring and is keen to integrate more of this into the course. “There’s a big gap in the industry for that kind of thing, so I’m looking at ways of making it into a project.” As well as the framed work that lines the walls, the five tutors are a huge source of inspiration for the students. Each teaches basic skills, as well as their own speciality – and despite the ever-changing trends, the fundamental principles of

design and manufacturing remain the same. Tutors encourage students to break the rules, take risks, be innovative and push boundaries. And this is especially important in the final year projects, where students showcase their design, pattern cutting, CAD (computer aided design), digital embroidery and Photoshop skills into a clothing collection. David says the amount of work that goes into the final projects is immense. “It begins with a concept, not just an idea, but something that considers ethics and

sustainability. It can be anything from commercial to abstract.” The final collections will be displayed in June at the Millennium Gallery and some students will showcase their work at Graduate Fashion Week in London at the end of May, where thousands of leading industry guests visit

While this has led to Hallam students being headhunted by top brands such as Ralph Lauren, it’s not the only way to get noticed in the industry. A board in the department displays ongoing competitions, which students are encouraged to enter as they can open a lot of doors and enhance CVs. As David showed me students’ impressive portfolios it seems there is no coincidence that Hallam keeps producing world-class designers; the extensive facilities and guidance of the tutors is clearly a winning formula. Despite David’s ongoing love of designing clothes he says: “Over the years I’ve found I have got a lot of satisfaction out of seeing students get the jobs they want or achieve something

CASE STUDY #2 Ellie Murphy is a menswear designer for H&M in Stockholm. Ellie started to work at a H&M store while she was at college and enjoyed being in a retail environment. “I also studied Alevel textiles and loved how creative you could be, which lead me to want to study fashion design at university.” She always knew she wanted to be a designer and when her final year collection was chosen for the catwalk presentation she realised all of her hard work had paid off. The course taught her many skills which she uses on a daily basis including pattern cutting, sewing, drawing, designing, fabric knowledge, illustration techniques and graphic layout. Now, at just 24, she has already secured her dream job and works with other inspiring designers to create autumn/winter and spring/summer collections, which are sold all over the world. “I have been very lucky to get where I am now, but I was determined to get my dream job. It’s a very tough industry to get into, but once you have it’s up to you progress and make a difference.”

WS Interview

In the hot seat

Amy Garcia speaks to Stephanie Burns about life on the Look North sofa – and how balancing a demanding television career with a young family is no easy task.

W

atched by 2.5million people each week, BBC Look North is held dearly in the hearts of Yorkshire folk. So finding a new presenter to reignite the on-air chemistry that Harry Gration shared with his former sofa buddy, Christa Ackroyd, was undoubtedly a tall order. But 33-year-old Amy Garcia – who took up the role in November 2013 – has a winning combination of warmth and genuine charm that has been gladly welcomed each evening by the show’s loyal viewers. Having grown up in Wakefield and studied media and performing arts at the local college, Amy embarked on a six-month stint as a cruise ship singer before, at the age of 19, venturing into children’s television. Staying in the genre for three years, she worked for S Club TV, CBBC and the Disney Channel and then side-stepped into light entertainment shows on Sky. At 27, she decided to travel in a different direction and enrolled at Goldsmiths College in London for an MA in journalism – a qualification that opened up a new world of opportunity. Three years after making her first appearance on the Look North sofa – presenting different bulletins as well as working behind the scenes on production – she secured a presenter/reporter role on BBC South Today and presented BBC3’s 60 Seconds news bulletins. In early 2013, she left to take up maternity leave and it wasn’t until the call came from Look North that she was propelled back into the spotlight – and back up to her beloved home county. Amy met her husband Tim, a Yorkshireborn songwriter and producer, 12 years ago in Brown’s bar, Leeds. But it wasn’t until the

WESTSIDE 46

following year, when they bumped into each other in a music studio in London, that they really hit it off. The rest, as they say, is history. Their 22-month-old daughter now kisses the screen when she sees her mum on television and even shouts out the names of Harry and weatherman Paul Hudson. So how does the glamorous presenter – who is fast becoming a Yorkshire sweetheart – juggle the pressure of such a demanding role with the reality of early motherhood? And just how did she survive the gruelling Tour de France Yorkshire Grand Depart route on the back of that tandem? I caught up with Amy during a lateevening shift to find out.

Was there anything that surprised you about the job? There are lots of added extras. I get invited to open fairs and do talks at schools, which is really nice. Sometimes it’s really hard to say no to things so you find yourself running around ragged doing everything. But it’s really lovely to be part of the community and see what amazing work some people do.

You’ve been on the sofa for just over a year now, how are you finding it so far? I am absolutely loving it and feel like I’m in a bit of a rhythm now. The first six months were just terrifying and then I had the tandem bike ride thrown into the mix. But it’s a really lovely team and there is such a variation every day.

Have there ever been any on-air disasters or blips that have got your heart pumping? Oh all the time – gosh there are so many mishaps that I probably couldn’t name them all but they play out on screen I think. You’ve got to be open and honest about it and I think the audience thanks you for that rather than trying to pretend nothing’s happened.

It is a really big role to take on, were you nervous in the lead up? Yes, it was a huge pressure. There were big shoes to fill and Look North has a massive audience, but I tried to push that to the back of my mind otherwise I’d have been a nervous wreck every night. How are you balancing a career and motherhood? I’m always juggling lots of balls but I’m lucky that I have very supportive parents and inlaws. Without them, I don’t think I’d be able to do the job. I also have a very supportive husband and, between the three of them, they look after Mabel while I’m at work and they do a great job. Mabel had just turned eight months when I came back to work so I felt like it was a little bit early to be leaving her. It was a bit of a shock to the system as we had six weeks to find a house and get everything sorted. As any new mum will know, your mind just goes to mush when you have children – for at least the first year – so it was terrifying not just going back into work and easing myself into it gently like most do, but being on live TV four nights a week.

What is your favourite part of the job? Meeting different people is the best part and the variation is great as it’s just different all the time.

Do you have any unfulfilled career ambitions? I’d quite like to travel a bit more with work. Harry went to Afghanistan recently and that was such an amazing trip; I was quite envious. Is there anyone who has particularly inspired you? Harry definitely has because he’s a bit of an institution. He’s got a real knack for doing both serious and soft news. I think Sophie Raworth’s great too. She used to work for Look North and she’s someone that I saw as a bit of a role model. What do you like most about being back in Yorkshire after a ten-year spell down south? You know where you are with Yorkshire folk; they don’t dilly dally around the subject. What you see is what you get and I love that because that’s what I’m all about as well.

Amy and Harry Gration (right) took on the Tour de France tandem challenge for Sport Relief

You must be recognised fairly often. How are you greeted by the Yorkshire folk? Well to begin with it was ‘ooh didn’t you do well on that tandem’ or ‘I hope you’re looking after Harry’. When I’m out and about, I’m with my little girl so I look very different as I’m in my mum get-up. A few people have said ‘do you know you look just like Amy Garcia off Look North, has anyone ever told you that before?’. I’m like ‘erm a few people, yes!’. How did you prepare for the Tour de France challenge? We did about six weeks’ training together and on our own. But I don’t think anything can really train you for that amount of cycling so it was just a case of trying to get a few miles under our belts. How did you keep yourself going when it was really tough? The audience was just brilliant; so many people came out to cheer us on. We had moments when we wanted to get off the blummin’ bike but there were crowds of people who’d been waiting in the rain for an hour to see us so we just had to keep going. The fact that we were raising money for BBC Sport Relief as well gave us a great incentive. Was there a specific high and a specific low? Oh yeah. The low was probably Holme Moss – that was just a killer. Apart from the fantastic crowds, Buttertubbs was a high because that was the first big hill. It was on the second day and we were both really worried about it but we made it up there without too much of a problem. The tandem is a big achievement in your Look North career – what would you say is the biggest achievement in your life so far? My daughter, definitely. That sounds really soppy doesn’t it? To be honest, I feel like I’ve got everything – I’ve got a dream job, the most gorgeous, supportive husband and a healthy, beautiful baby girl. I feel like I’ve won the lottery. Look North Yorkshire is on BBC1 every week night at 6.30pm.

Transforming the deteriorating quarantine business into a thriving pet hotel and successful quarantine service may have taken hard work and more than £30,000 of investment but, for pet lovers Julie and Maureen Adams, it was a labour of love. They are now incredibly proud to offer an exemplary ‘home away from home’ for dogs and cats. “We are a very different offering in the market,” explained Julie. “We have the security of kennelling with the activities, care and attention of a home boarding facility – and lots of extras too. “We provide a high-end service and great facilities – from the luxury accommodation to the high staff-to-dog ratio. While we’re not the cheapest option, we have tried to keep the cost accessible in relation to the level of quality.” Size is a key indicator of this excellence as they far surpass the minimum kennel size requirements. As well as lots of space indoors, Calagran’s shortest runs are 17ft long and the largest is 30ft. So, even when the dogs are not out for one of their regular walks, they are able to enjoy good exercise in a nice environment. And, as the kennels are not side by side, even the most nervous dogs can enjoy their stay. As a quarantine provider, Calagran is legally required to operate a higher standard of service than regular kennels, including

inspections every 12 weeks, high security including CCTV and foolproof fencing. In addition, their own high standards ensure pets are treated to a wonderful experience so their time away from home is more than just clean and comfortable – it’s a luxurious holiday. ‘Love and hugs ensuite’ is how Julie and Maureen describe it, with music piped into the cosy, heated kennels, oodles of affection and a treat each night before bed. And once the pampered pooches venture outside, things get even better. “Not only do we have some of the largest indoor kennels and outdoor runs in the country, we also have a secure two acre off-leash paddock so dogs can basically run around a huge play park to their heart’s content,” said Julie. This facility is also hired out to individuals and groups and is especially useful to those affected by the local authority’s new offleash rules. All are welcome to contact Calagran if they would like to use the space. In addition to Julie and Maureen, there are two full time staff – Kelly Goodwin and

Georgina Parsons – who are qualified to the highest level of animal care. Adding further to the diverse range of services, there is even a professional groomer – Gemma Baron of Paws Galore – onsite. They are also proud to work with two rescue charities – Nottingham and Yorkshire Boxer Rescue and ZeptheDep Rottweiler Rescue – rehoming dogs that would otherwise have been euthanized. “We work almost entirely with local suppliers and at every opportunity we try to operate ethically and accessibly,” said Julie. “There’s an exciting extension planned for later this year, and we’re looking forward to further expanding a service that is already really quite special.” Calagran Four Paws Hotel and Quarantine Deepsick Lane, Arkwright Town, Chesterfield, S44 5DN Tel: 01246 211281 Email: contact@cfourpawshotel.co.uk www.cfourpawshotel.co.uk www.calagranquarantinekennels.com

Martyn Kemp Opticians have the answers to a problem that could be responsible for a range of conditions – from headaches and sleeplessness to cataracts and depression.

Optometrist and Martyn Kemp Opticians director Allan Forster at the Abbeydale Road branch with receptionists Cassie Wild (left) and Janice Farrell.

Beware the blue light

A

Take a diet supplement called Macushield, which builds up the levels of pigment at the macula, the part of the eye that gives you your clear detailed central vision. Exposure to too much blue light and UV is thought to accelerate macular degeneration.

re you having trouble sleeping? Suffering from migraines? Feeling slightly depressed? It could be exposure to too much blue light, especially in

the evenings. Your eyes are sensitive to a narrow band of frequencies referred to as the visible spectrum.Visible light capable of being seen by the human eye consists of wavelengths of varying lengths. Blue light helps to increase our feeling of well being, but blue light has a very short wavelength, close to ultra violet (UV) wavelengths, and exposure to large amounts of the high-energy shorter wavelengths can be harmful to our eyes. There is mounting evidence that prolonged exposure to blue light may contribute to the formation of cataracts and macular degeneration.

Where is this blue light coming from? It's coming from the sun and is emitted from artificial light sources such as LEDs, computers, mobile phones, some TVs, fluorescent tubes and low-energy light bulbs. We spend on average two hours a day on tablets, smartphones etc, meaning protection against blue light is important for anyone using a digital device on a regular basis.

How does blue light affect sleep patterns and general health? In the evening when it gets dark, a part of our brain secretes a hormone called melatonin which signals to our bodies that it’s time to be tired and go to sleep. Blue light, whether from the sun, computers or low-energy light bulbs, is very effective at inhibiting melatonin production. Studies have linked melatonin suppression not only to lack of sleep but also

WESTSIDE 58

2

various health problems such as obesity, depression and even some cancers.

What can we do to stop blue light affecting our eyes and health? There are two solutions: 1 Blue light blocking spectacles. In one study people who wore them for three hours before bedtime had major improvements in both sleep and mood. It was also found to reduce daytime dysfunction in patients who had had cataract operations. This is because after a cataract operation more blue light and UV passes through to the back of the eyes. The blue blocking glasses have also been shown to improve sleep in shift workers. Blue blocking lenses in the past have always had to be tinted, but now Martyn Kemp Opticians can provide you with a clear coated lens to your own spectacle prescription that blocks out blue light and UV – giving you the best eye protection possible.

Macushield is often taken by outdoor sportsmen to give their eyes extra protection and it also helps to reduce glare and so improves their performance. Martyn and his wife both take a Macushield tablet each morning. So, can’t sleep, feeling low, suffering from headaches while on the computer? You have two possible solutions.Your first step is to book an appointment at any branch of Martyn Kemp Opticians, Sheffield's local opticians for local people. Martyn Kemp Opticians www.mko.co.uk

If you’re not a ‘gym person’ you’re perfect for LadyZone Our members are all different ages, shapes and sizes, with varying fitness levels but one important thing in common - the desire to exercise in a non-intimidating, friendly environment that supports them to reach their goals. Susan Kidder lost 2.5 and a half stone using the 30-minute circuit:

When I retired, I decided it was time to do something for myself and finally tackle my weight. At size 20, I was putting pressure on my knees and I felt very unfit. I had never been to a gym before, but plucked up the courage to make an appointment at LadyZone and I’ve never looked back since. I have lost 2 and a half stone and 2 dress sizes so far, and I feel wonderful - healthier, happier, and fitter. I was in New York with my husband at Christmas and I managed to walk all over the city; something I would never have been able to do before joining LadyZone.

The support you get from the staff is fantastic and as soon as you have been to LadyZone once, you will already look forward to going back.

I went from a size 16 to a size 10 in just a few months and feel so much better. I used to hate having my photo taken but I love getting ready for nights out now and my confidence has soared. Jaki Blackshaw

I decided I had to do something about my weight before the menopause and because of my busy job as a social worker, I thought the 30-minute workouts would fit in well with my lifestyle. And they certainly do! I finish work, call in at the gym, and can still be home to cook dinner for my teenagers at a decent time. Jayne Metcalf

WS Legal Michelle Cooper

City’s highly regarded family solicitor launches own firm

G

oing through a divorce or relationship breakdown is one of the most stressful things a person can go through. As well as dealing with the emotional upheaval, there are a host of practical arrangements to consider, which can be difficult at such an upsetting time. Getting the right advice and support can make a huge difference and help you to feel in control of the situation. A solicitor specialising in family law should be your first port of call. Michelle Cooper is one of the region’s most highly regarded family lawyers and she has now set up the first private family law firm in Sheffield. A qualified solicitor for 20 years, Michelle was previously a partner and head of family law at one of the area’s leading law firms, which went from strength to strength under her leadership. She has now branched out on her own and set up Acclaimed Family Law – an independent family law firm specialising in divorce, private children issues like guardianship, prenuptial agreements, cohabitation disputes and agreements. Launching the firm on the back of her formidable reputation, Michelle is one of the city’s top divorce solicitors and her name carries a lot of weight. Her department has won the Yorkshire Lawyer of the Year award, she is individually named in The Legal 500 and was recently one of only a handful of Yorkshire family lawyers in The Times newspaper’s VouchedFor list and was in the top tier with a five-star rating.

WESTSIDE 64

Words: Hannah Pearson Michelle has always prided herself on delivering client satisfaction and she felt there was a gap in the market that was not being filled by the traditional law firm model. She says: “Many traditional family departments are restricted in the service they can offer because they are just one of a number of departments vying for status and resources. “Most of my work comes from recommendations and the feedback from clients was excellent, but I still felt we could do even better if the firm was solely focused on the needs of family clients. “The accolade that meant the most to me was appearing on The Times newspaper’s VouchedFor list. You have to be nominated by clients who post reviews and you are ‘scored’. The Times contacts every client to ensure they are bona fide and I was in the top tier of reviews. “I realised then that client satisfaction is what drives me and I believed a standalone family law firm would better meet clients’ needs. Also, as a smaller firm with more

compact overheads we can offer a more cost-effective service.” Michelle is supported by her personal assistant of nine years Jill Raine, who is quick to sing her praises. She says: “Michelle’s name sells itself as she has such a great reputation and is always recommended by clients. She prides herself on client care and is always understanding and empathetic during what is usually a very difficult and stressful time. “We take the time to get to know our clients, which means we can offer them a streamlined, efficient service and deliver exceptional customer satisfaction. Working in one department means we can give each client our complete attention.” As a small, independent firm, Acclaimed Family Law is not restricted by a firm’s policy so they can offer a flexible range of cost packages such as fixed fees and pay as you go. They also offer a first free half hour interview with no obligation or pressure, as well as consultations outside normal working hours.

Why settle for less? A classic luxury lingerie brand celebrates 150 years this year; you’ll find their full range at Lace in Bakewell.

F

or 150 years, one of the world’s leading designers of luxury lingerie has been proving that curvy ladies needn’t settle for anything less than the most gorgeous undergarments. PrimaDonna is only sold in specialised lingerie stores – such as Bakewell’s premier lingerie boutique, Lace – to ensure only the best personal advice is available when browsing the beautiful collections. This classic luxury brand, which began in Germany in 1865 and was acquired by a Belgian designer in 1990, has become the premium choice for ladies with a fuller figure. Sister brand PrimaDonna Twist, introduced in 2010, seamlessly blends the brand’s values of comfort, fit and quality with playful prints, trendy colours and understated embroidery, making it the perfect choice for those looking to inject a splash of colour to their lingerie collection. Each bra requires between 40 and 50 stages of assembly – and the attention to detail is evident. With every element rigorously tested, you can be assured that each beautiful piece of fabric, every delicate lace detail and all fastenings, elastane, underwiring and straps are of the highest calibre. These qualities allay perfectly with Lace, whose owner Sue Haywood – known as the ‘bra

doctor’ – has been working with PrimaDonna for more than 20 years. Lace stocks a superb selection of underwear from some of the world’s leading brands. In addition to PrimaDonna, you’ll find Marie Jo, Lise Charmel, Aubade, Felina and Empreinte. With more than 30 years’ experience in bra fitting, Sue offers her ladies an expertly judged fitting experience. Offering only the perfect fit and style for each individual, it’s little wonder her many loyal customers return again and again. Post-operative care is also something of a speciality at Lace. With the philosophy of ‘near enough is not good enough’, special care is taken to ensure that being fitted for a bra after such a traumatic experience doesn’t add to the already-stressful situation. And Lace is not limited to lingerie, as Sue also stocks exquisite swimwear, nightwear and hosiery. The fantastic selection of bikinis and swimming costumes are available in cup sizes A-H, with matching kaftans and sarongs. To discover the delights currently in store, make Lace the first port of call on your next trip to Bakewell. And don’t forget to check out the extensive PrimaDonna collection to see for yourself exactly why this renowned brand has stood the test of time in such style.

A message from PrimaDonna: It always starts with a dream. We woke up one day to the thought of making women with a larger cup size feel beautiful the way they are. So we spent the next 150 years living up to that dream. Every single day. But can we tell you a little secret? We merely brought out what was already in you. To all women with a larger cup size, proud and beautiful: we’ll keep designing gorgeous, perfectly fitting lingerie for the next 150 years too. PrimaDonna – 150 years to you.

Tim and Sam

Sam Holloway

Words: Hannah Pearson

Clients are flocking to Tim Hyde Hairdressing for luxurious yet relaxed hair and beauty services.

F

or those looking to revive their locks, experiment with a new look or simply indulge in a little ‘me time’, there is a new hair salon on Ecclesall Road that boasts a range of quality treatments and services to help you look and feel fabulous. Tim Hyde Hairdressing opened in July last year and has already established a loyal clientele, who return time and time again for a luxury service in a relaxed, friendly environment. The salon – which has an enviable position with beautiful views of Endcliffe Park – was previously an antique furniture shop and the building’s charm and authenticity shines through. Exposed brick walls, antique furniture and vintage artwork give the salon its character. Owner and artistic director Tim Hyde is aided by his assistant of two years James, who will qualify in March and join the salon as a graduate stylist. Together they deliver quality, bespoke cuts and colours for both men and women. “I always worked in large salons and this is something I was keen to move away from when I started my own business,” says Tim. “I prefer the one-to-one, bespoke experience that working in a small salon can offer. “I want the salon to be a home from home – where people come to relax, read a magazine, enjoy a treatment and unwind.” This is reflected in the salon’s design, which resembles a boutique with its gorgeous furniture, mirrors and lighting. From cosy armchairs to fully reclined hair washing stations,

WESTSIDE 68

everything is designed with comfort in mind. And this approach is clearly paying off as Tim has clients who travel from across the region and from as far as London, Ireland and Spain to visit the salon. “I would love to take Tim Hyde as a brand to other cities and then internationally, but we need to take one step at a time. The salon has already grown much faster than I expected and we have been lucky to gain lots of new local clients, who have all given us very kind word-of-mouth recommendations.” The salon has exclusivity as Sheffield’s only stockist of Living Proof – a hair range co-owned by the queen of luscious locks, Jennifer Aniston. Tim Hyde also stocks luxury products by Davines and Shu Uemura and is an official salon partner of Sassoon Professional, where Tim trained when he started in the industry 12 years ago. Tim has been fortunate enough to work with some very talented people and he brings years of experience and passion to Tim Hyde Hairdressing.

Based at Tim Hyde Hairdressing is experienced beauty therapist Sam Holloway, who offers brow, make up and nail treatments on Thursdays and Fridays at the salon, as well as home visits for weddings. She is one of a limited number of beauty therapists trained to work with HD Brows. The brow treatment is the must-have remedy for perfect brows and the capsule make up collection can create flawless looks for every occasion. Sam will be hosting a special event at the salon on Thursday 26 March from 6.30-9pm. Customers can benefit from 15 per cent off all products and treatment bookings made on the night. A stylist from HD Brows will be demonstrating products at 7pm. Phone 07773 359036 for more information.

Tim Hyde Hairdressing is looking to recruit a senior stylist/colour technician, who has experience, creativity and a passion for great hairdressing. They will also be hiring a new assistant to train at the salon with Tim.

T

here’s no denying it’s been a typical bitter, snow-lingering British winter. But we’re approaching spring now and things have begun – finally – to warm up slightly. Cyclists will particularly have felt the unforgiving wrath of the elements these past few months. Wind, snow and rain are merciless evils when it comes to riding your bike. But let’s not forget – as you peel off an under layer – how these extremities can affect your trusty two-wheeler. Russell Cutts, owner of Russell’s Bicycle Shed at Sheffield railway station, knows a thing or two about bikes. He says: “You need to be prepared to get some key components changed in the spring. Brake pads tend to wear out a lot quicker because of salt and grit and the chain will also start to rust if it is not kept well-oiled.” Although he’s happy to dish out maintenance advice, Russell is more of a hands-on kinda guy. Over the last two years, he has serviced hundreds of bikes at the station from the back of his mobile workshop. “At times it’s been really hard; everybody knows just how bitterly cold railway stations can be and working with your hands in such freezing conditions can be a real challenge.” But whatever the weather, Russell is

WESTSIDE 72

Keeping you on the move Russell’s Bicycle Shed, a commuter-friendly cycle shop at Sheffield railway station. passionate about bikes and helping cyclists and last year he moved into a permanent workshop in the station. “It has really transformed what I can do to help Sheffield’s growing community of cycling commuters.” Unique to Sheffield, Russell’s Bicycle Shed specialises in supporting the increasing number of commuters choosing to ride bikes to and from work. “People in London have taken to hiring city bikes, but London-style ‘Boris bikes’ are just too heavy for the hills of

Sheffield. Instead we’ve got a fleet of lightweight, multi-geared Marin bikes.” To meet customer demand, Russell has taken on additional help. Joe Connolly and Joe Ondrak have both come from cycling backgrounds and are skilled mechanics. Together, they offer cyclists the full range of mechanical support and bike servicing. As well as servicing and hire bikes, Russell’s Bicycle Shed also sells a wide range of cycling products and offers a mobile service too. “We can collect your bicycle and return it to you complete. We may even be able to repair your bicycle there and then. Just give us a call and describe the problem – like the AA or RAC, we’re here to help keep you moving.” Russell believes cycling in Sheffield is for everyone and he’s playing a key role in developing an inclusive community of city cyclists. “I’ve founded a company that’s geared up to help all cyclists, no matter your level of fitness, age or experience. The Tour De France was fantastic for cycling in Sheffield, so if you feel inspired and want to try commuting by bike, you can hire one and give it a go. I’m sure you will love it and who knows – within the year you might even be wearing Lycra… but that’s not compulsory.” To find out more visit www.russellsbicycleshed.co.uk or call 0114 273 0539 or 07557 410553.

Birkdale School

Sheffield High Infant & Junior School At the infant and junior school at Sheffield High every girl is important. The aim is for each girl to be a happy and fulfilled individual – both academically and socially. An exciting and challenging curriculum includes sport, music, art, three modern languages and drama, as well as full coverage of the foundation subjects. Outstanding pastoral provision helps the girls to develop self-confidence, motivation and independent learning skills, with small class sizes enabling all staff to know the girls well. The wide range of exciting extracurricular activities available broadens the girls’ horizons and offers them opportunities to develop their skills to a high level. There is a busy breakfast club from 7.30am, supervised after-school care until 6.15pm; school transport is available from all over South Yorkshire, including Lodge Moor and Fulwood, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. The junior school is hosting open mornings on Thursday 23 April and Friday 24 April, welcoming visitors between 9.30am and 11.30am to see a typical school day. If you would like to visit at another time, the head, Anne Jones, is always happy to show prospective parents and their daughters what the school has to offer. For more information, telephone the admissions secretary on 0114 358 7602 or see www.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk.

Birkdale is the only school in Sheffield specialising in quality education and care for boys aged four to16. The thriving coeducational sixth form provides a balance when it matters most, preparing pupils for further education. They offer an all-round education, which balances academic attainment with a huge range of experiences outside the classroom and inspires pupils to enjoy learning. Small classes and outstanding teaching by motivated and gifted staff produces pupils with independent and curious minds. Pupils are able to work together, challenge ideas and to take the initiative in their learning. Students enjoy their lessons, gain excellent examination results and are wellprepared for future study. In 2014, 44 per cent of all A-level grades were A* or A, and 70 per cent were A*- B. At GCSE 60 per cent of all entries were A* or A. Demand for places at Birkdale is high and they continually invest in school facilities. The new pre-prep (infant) building, Belmayne House, opened at the beginning of this academic year and offers outstanding facilities for the youngest Birkdale pupils. Birkdale can be accessed via regular bus routes. There is also a parent organised school bus service from many outlying areas. Growing demand Westbourne School has responded to parents clamouring for places by expanding its hugely popular pre-school facility. Words: Hannah Pearson

very parent feels nervous about dropping their child off on their first day of school, as they take that big step into the world of education. However, these anxieties can be eased and the transition made easier if children are introduced gently to the world of learning through pre-school classes. And what better way to do this than at Westbourne Pre-School? Westbourne School – Sheffield’s only academically non-selective, co-educational, independent school for ages three to 16 – responded to demand from parents in 2013 by building a new pre-school facility on the site of the junior school. The pre-school has proved so popular that due to growing demand for places it has recently undergone an expansion and is celebrating its second birthday with the opening of a new pre-school extension. Offering places for girls and boys aged three to four, the pre-school offers a valuable service for parents and gives children a stimulating introduction to school life. With places for 24 children, attendance at preschool is not restricted to those who go on to attend Westbourne School and childcare vouchers are accepted where applicable, along with the 15 hours LEA grant funding. Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £16m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... Day Award up to £25,000, Boarding Award up to £65,000 If your child is predicted; 9 Grade A star GCSE’s they could be entitled to 100% of the fees 8 A star and 1 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 85% of the fees 7 A star and 2 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 70% of the fees 6 A star and 3 A Grade GCSE’s worth up to 50% of the fees

FIRST TERM FREE Day or Boarding Worth up to £9,795 Continues for 2014-15 (a) First Term Free for Years N1 to 8 inclusive, or (b) 50% off First Term’s Fees for Years 9, 10, 12. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). FAMILY SIBLING AWARDS Day & Boarding Our discounts are bigger than others, if indeed they even offer them. Brothers & sisters - boarders from 12% - 20%, day pupils 10%.

Nonna’s re-opening weekend made a mark in Ecclesall Road history when it played host to one of the biggest movie stars on the planet. Sylvester Stallone was in Sheffield to perform a sell-out show at the City Hall. His promoter, Rocco Buonvino, was one of the first visitors to the newly refurbished Nonna’s earlier in the day and recommended it to the star. Sylvester was treated to a special menu, including his favourite, meatballs and a Toscano Antico cigar. Maurizio said: “He couldn’t have been a nicer or more down to earth. It really felt like he was one of the family.”

Y

ou can’t beat a good celebration. And what better excuse to break out the bunting than the five-year anniversary of one of Sheffield’s best and most-loved cafes, Made

By Jonty. But this isn’t just any café. It’s part of the independent Sharrow Vale Road foodie mile and is run by born and bred Sheffielder, Jonty Cork. Jonty has always had a love of making things and even completed a degree in furniture design, but he decided to swap his hammers and chisels for pans and knives when he trained as a chef while working in a chalet in Morzine. After returning to Sheffield he was head chef at Silversmiths and West 10, before he developed a taste for the more relaxed, casual dining life… and so Made By Jonty was born. It’s easy to see why the café has been such a success; the staff are friendly and organised and Jonty is fully involved in everything that goes on. Despite spending most of his time doing what he does best – cooking in the kitchen – he works one day a week front of house, so he can keep an awareness of all aspects of the business. Although the café offers more filling options of chilli and stew, it is mainly established as a brunch venue. There is an impressive all-day breakfast menu, as well as a specials blackboard, which is host to delicious salads, soups and bagels. There’s nothing I love more than tasty food that comes without mammoth calorific consequences, so the Moroccan spiced cous

cous salad was an easy option. I went for the chicken, but vegetarians or cheese lovers can opt for halloumi – either would be equally appetising. I enjoyed this dish so much I have attempted several replications at home – of course none have quite matched Jonty’s, but I’ll keep trying. My partner was in search of something with a bit more substance and he’d spotted the beef and Guinness stew before we’d even sat down. With beautifully tender beef, an array of vegetables and a hunk of bread for dipping; this was an ideal hearty winterwarmer dish. Plates cleaned and cleared, and onto dessert. We were sat upstairs, so instead of traipsing back down to the cake selection, Jonty reeled off an impressive list from memory. We ordered a banana and cinnamon cake and a coffee and hazelnut cake. The banana cake was fruity and moist, and delicately drizzled with white icing. Across the table my partner unapologetically tucked into the fluffy coffee cake, which was accompanied by buttercream icing and a walnut to top it off. Jonty told us he opened the café not just because he’d had enough of unsociable restaurant hours, but because he likes to exceed peoples expectations and that’s easier to do in a café than in fine dining. After my experience at Made By Jonty, I’ll admit he did exactly that. Opening times: Monday-Friday: 8am-5pm Saturday and bank holidays: 9am-5pm

Go West! Richard Abbey disovers that rising star James Mellor is not afraid to put his own stamp on classic cooking.

ince West 10 opened 13 years ago, it’s been a staple of the Westside area. As the wine bar of choice for many, fun and frivolity is never far away and owner Jonnie Higginbottom wouldn’t have it any other way. With a long and enviable wine list, the bar is notoriously busy but if you’ve overlooked the restaurant, you’re really missing out. West 10’s head chef, James Mellor, first came to our attention in 2013 when he was chosen as our ‘Young Chef of the Year’. It was an accolade well-earned and his stock has continued to rise as he has made his mark on the Sheffield dining scene. With a refurbished kitchen and new chargrill to experiment with, there’s perhaps even more pressure on the young chef’s shoulders. Not that this fazes him one bit. On the evening of our visit, his food was pretty much faultless, from the well-cooked steak and fish right down to the seasoning of the vegetables. With daily fish deliveries from James’ home county of Dorset, it’s no surprise that seafood features heavily on the menu but you’ll also find the likes of game, steaks and vegetarian dishes too. The choice of fish on offer depends on the catch of course, and on this occasion we were spoilt with choices of oysters, mussels, sea bass, sole and monkfish. We started with calamari, from the specials board, and scallops, which were given a tropical twist with accompaniments of mango salsa, pineapple carpaccio and coconut.

www.regionalmagazine.co.uk

The squid was crispy and tender, as it should be, while the scallops proved to be a riot of colour, taste and texture. Bar manager Nigel Green clearly knows his stuff and was right on the money with a

What we ate: Starters Calamari, £6 Scallops with mango salsa, pineapple carpaccio and coconut, £10 Mains Surf and turf (8oz), with garlic tiger prawns, scallop, field mushroom, chips and salad, £22 Monkfish with crayfish and red wine sauce, green vegetables and mashed potato, £17 Dessert Messy James – chocolate brownie, meringue, berries, Chantilly cream and vanilla ice cream, £5 Sticky toffee pudding with banana and butterscotch ice cream, £5 Drinks Babich sauvignon blanc, New Zealand, £5.80 glass Willow Glen shiraz cabernet, Australia, £4.60 glass West 10 367 Fulwood Road, Ranmoor, Sheffield, S10 3GD Tel: 0114 230 9190 www.west10winebar.com

buttery New Zealand Babich sauvignon blanc to start, a good match for our menu choices. For mains, I continued the fishy theme with excellent monkfish. Served on a bed of mash and green veg, which had plenty of bite, it was deliciously meaty while the crayfish and red wine sauce was extremely more-ish. Torn between what to choose for her main course, my wife enjoyed the best of both worlds with a twist on a classic surf and turf – a medium-rare sirloin steak topped with garlic prawns and scallops. Served with chips, salad and a generously-sized field mushroom, it was filling as well as flavoursome. Desserts often present chefs with the opportunity to show off and my ‘Messy James’ was a real show-stopper. But where to start? Well, there was a cream-filled chocolate cup and saucer, complete with parfait-like sugar cubes, strawberries, meringue, ice-cream and yet more cream and chocolate. If you have a sweet tooth, this could be your version of heaven on a plate. No less impressive was my wife’s sticky toffee pudding served with caramelised banana and butterscotch ice cream. Sweet and indulgent, it was the perfect end to the meal. James describes himself as a classic chef but he clearly is not afraid of putting his own twist on things. And, on this evidence, it works so well. West 10 serves lunch Monday to Saturday, 12-2.30pm, and dinner Tuesday to Saturday, 5.30-9pm.

Hannah Pearson enjoys the authentic taste of Mama Tassia’s real family-style Greek cooking.

Greedy is good!

F

or those of you looking for delicious food, sunny service and an authentic taste of the Mediterranean, look no further than The Greedy Greek Deli. A slice of Greek culture came to Sheffield in 2003, when the deli opened on Sharrow Vale Road. Run by the Mouzakis family, it offers a truly authentic experience and has become something of a local legend. From the minute you step inside you are greeted like an old friend. The business is very much a family affair – with the owner Dionisios managing and working front of house, wife Helen is in charge of marketing and administration and all the food is lovingly made by the affectionately nicknamed Mama Tassia. When we visited, Dionisios (but you can call him Dennis) selected a variety of dishes so we could try a bit of everything and we were blown away as plate after plate was piled onto our table. It was dips meze to start – houmous, tzatziki, olive pâté and strofilia – with warm pitta bread. A colourful Greek salad followed and the crispy halloumi was delicious. As a big fan of samosas, the deli’s mozzarella, feta and dill, and spinach, feta and leek varieties went down a storm. And still the food kept coming. A meat platter next of lamb kofta, chicken kofta and chicken skewers surrounded by salad and lemon potatoes drizzled in olive oil. The main dish of roasted lamb was so tender it fell apart, after being roasted in a brick oven for six and a half hours. Presented

WESTSIDE 98

with artichokes, peas, carrots, leeks and parsley, with yoghurt sauce on top, it made for a mouth-watering dish. Clearly, Dennis knows how to spoil his guests and he treats his customers as though he were hosting a family meal. Throughout the evening he regaled us with tales of his home island of Zakynthos. Stories of turtles, dolphins, blue caves and the glistening ocean are enough to make you wonder why anyone would ever leave. Somehow we found the space for pudding and Mama Tassia’s famous orange and apple yoghurt cake was divine – the dish that Dennis credits for causing him to gain a few pounds since we last met. My companion, a keen baker, couldn’t resist getting the cake recipe for us to try at home, as we inhaled layer after layer of moist filo pastry with the zesty mouth-watering flavours of orange and apple mixed with yoghurt and fruit syrup. The deli’s matriarch has recently turned 70 years old and Dennis is trying to get her to take a back seat in the business and enjoy retirement, although he admits that cooking is her life. He has recently hired head chef Christos Gerogiannis to help Mama Tassia in the kitchen. Before joining The Greedy Greek, Christos worked as head chef at the University of Ioannina and some of the top hotels in Greece. Not one to let delicious food go to waste, after a creamy coffee, Dennis helpfully boxed up the rest of our meal so we could enjoy another taste of Greece the following day.

Bet on the beef With steak from some of Yorkshire’s most pampered cattle, you’ll be on a winner at Sheffield’s newest casino restaurant. Words and Photography:: Chris Wilson What we ate

T

ime was, you only went to casinos for one reason... to play the tables. If there was food, it was there as an afterthought – perhaps a free breakfast thrown in for the high rollers, still turning cards and placing bets as the first shafts of morning sunlight intruded on their twilight world. Times and tastes change. Most casinos have a serious restaurant in play, and Sheffield’s newest gambling operation is no exception. So, chips with everything at the Genting Club? Not necessarily, as they have not one but two restaurants, one of which, Hou Mei, is strictly Chinese. However there are chips to be had in the mainstream Fahrenheit restaurant – rather lovely triple cooked smoke salt ones at that – but more on those beauties later. We dined early on a Friday evening. The casino was already busy as we took the walkway above the gaming floor to the contemporary, comfortable setting of Fahrenheit Bar & Grill. Wooden floors and leather seating made for a spacious, sleek and uncluttered space. Seated in a comfortable booth with a glass of something cold to hand, this seemed as nice a way to start the weekend as any. Starters were not too filling but definitely scored highly for taste. The pressed smoked ham hock terrine, with rocket and damson plum jelly, impressed my carnivorous companion and my spiced crab fritters,

encased in a very light and crisp batter, were nicely paired with Asian slaw and chilli dipping sauce. Main course choices include a selection from the Josper Grill, which burns charcoals at a high cooking temperature of 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. This was intriguing, as was the chance to sample Yorkshire Wagyu sirloin of beef. I remember when Wagyu beef first began appearing on British menus. Imported from Japan and dizzyingly expensive, we were told that the marbling on the meat and the pampered, stress-free outdoor life enjoyed by the cattle combined to create the perfect steak. Perhaps the Yorkshire-bred beast that provided this particular slab of lean, succulent meat was given gentle massages and had Beethoven’s late quartets played over a personal stereo, while it grazed on lush green grass beside gently flowing country streams. Let’s hope so. Word from the other side of the booth was that this was one of the great steaks. Oh yes, and those chips were utterly fantastic. My spicy main course was equally satisfying. There were two thick, juicy sea bass fillets fried in a masala sauce coating with spiced potatoes and cucumber and mint raita. I hadn’t intended going out for a curry but this particular dish leapt out of the menu and was executed in some style. Desserts, a warm chocolate brownie and sticky toffee pudding, were extremely sweet and moreish. Service was friendly and

attentive throughout and the drinks menu is more than reasonable with the very drinkable house wines starting from £14 a bottle and some fine selections by the glass too. Sheffield city centre can be a cold, unwelcoming place if you are searching for somewhere good to eat – Fahrenheit at Genting Club is a warming exception.

Kitchen secrets Have you ever wondered what makes a great chef? Some of the Words: Hannah Pearson region’s finest tell us what makes them tick. Faruk Günay Lokanta

“I opened Lokanta with my wife Ruth in December 2009 to offer quality Turkish food to Sheffield. “Originally, I ran two bar restaurants in the Turkish holiday resort of Kemer, near Antalya, but I wanted to expand the food side of my business, which we have been able to do in the UK. “Food prep starts early at Lokanta as we make everything in-house, from cold meze dishes to freshly baked bread and baklava. We prepare and marinate meat and make dishes such as courgette fritters, stuffed vine leaves, stuffed peppers and our octopus and dill salad from scratch. “I enjoy hospitality and bringing quality Turkish food to a wider audience. Service is very important in this business but without food there is no restaurant.” 478-480 Glossop Road, Broomhill, Sheffield, S10 2QA Tel: 0114 266 6444 www.lokanta.co.uk

I’ve worked in some top class restaurants and wherever I have been I have always learned something new.” “As the head chef and co-owner of Swanky Frank’s, it’s a busy job. I enjoy the pressure though – when it’s chock-a-block there’s a skill in timing and juggling things to make sure the customer receives quality piping hot tasty food. “It’s extremely satisfying when everything goes to plan and there’s nothing better than hearing the phrase ‘compliments to the chef’.” 722a Chesterfield Road, Woodseats, Sheffield, S8 0SE Tel: 0114 258 8127 www.swankyfranks.co.uk

Richard Burden Napoleons Casino & Restaurant Not only does Napoleons offer a thrilling night out, it promises an exciting dining experience with a new restaurant menu every month. Our customers enjoy the fact they can come back again and again and always be presented with a new range of dishes to try. It also makes our job in the kitchen far more interesting as we have new creations to rustle up. Although it’s not on the menu every month I’d say a signature dish of ours is the Chateaubriand. It’s a beautiful cut carved at the table that provides some extra theatre - it always goes down well, with many customers sending compliments back to the kitchen! Paulo Stazi Maranello’s Italian Restaurant “I have been a head chef in various establishments for the past 39 years. Ten years ago I was the owner of this restaurant when it was called Trattoria Romana, which is why it is so special to work here. “I discovered a passion for food as a little boy growing up in Rome. I chose this career path as I am passionate about Italian cuisine and every day is a new challenge. “I would say to aspiring chefs that to be a great chef you must be able to handle stress, be ready for the fast pace, but most importantly enjoy what you do.”

Leslie Buddington Brocco on the Park “I’ve loved cooking since I was a youngster and my passion for food has just kept growing. I was souschef at The Soho Hotel in London and second-in-command at Kermadec in Auckland – one of New Zealand’s landmark seafood restaurants. When I moved back to Sheffield, I headed up the kitchen at Platillos, before becoming head chef at The Curator’s House.

I went to Bournemouth College to train as a chef, before moving to London to work at Langan’s Brasserie in Mayfair. “I moved to Sheffield and became head chef at West 10 three years ago. I like to put my stamp on dishes by living up to the venue’s reputation for serving quality fresh fish from Dorset and giving traditional British dishes an interesting Asian twist. “The best part of my job is that every day is different – from the dishes I create to the customers I serve.” 376 Fulwood Road, Sheffield, S10 3GD Tel: 0114 230 9190 www.west10winebar.com

“I’ve been the head chef at Brocco on the Park since it opened, serving modern British cuisine with a Scandinavian influence. I cook seasonally, so my signature dish changes throughout the year. Right now, it’s thyme potato gnocchi, creamed leeks, purple sprouting broccoli and parmesan. Serving great food to happy customers is the best reward. WS Meet the Chef Darren Goodwin Losehill House “I couldn’t think of anything better than getting paid to cook! There's no such thing as a typical day at Losehill House and I really enjoy having the freedom to create new dishes. “I have previously worked at The Prospect Restaurant in Bakewell, East Lodge Country House Hotel in Rowsley, The Rutland Arms Hotel in Bakewell, Pleasant Street Brasserie in Lytham and have been at Losehill for just over seven years now. “We have had a few dishes in recipe

books that we feature on menus quite regularly; notably a cheese on toast variation from The Henderson’s Relish Cookbook and a lime and honey dessert for The Sheffield Cook Book. “My advice for aspiring chefs is that it won't be easy but listen, work hard and keep an open mind.” Losehill Lane, Edale Road, Hope, Derbyshire, S33 6AF Tel: 01433 621219 www.losehillhouse.co.uk

Chris Mapp The Tickled Trout

Christos Gerogiannis The Greedy Greek Deli

“Hospitality is in my blood – I grew up in a pub and my dad is my mentor. If you are lucky enough to do something you love like I am, make the most of it. “At The Tickled Trout, we serve food sourced from Derbyshire except the fish which comes from Cornwall. It has an Italian twist but we also do modern English and European dishes. “I have a fabulous team and we are always creating new ideas. My fellow chefs are like family and the camaraderie is second to none. “It is a hard job with a lot of hours but it can be extremely rewarding making people happy. Don’t dream of success, wake up early and work hard for it!”

“I joined The Greedy Greek Deli seven months ago and before I worked as head chef at the University of Ioannina and some of the top hotels in Greece. “I qualified from the Greek national culinary school as well as the professional technological school, where I enhanced my culinary qualifications and skills with a hotel and business administration qualification. “I have always had a love of food and cooking, particularly traditional Greek cuisine. I enjoy trying new recipes and designing new dishes – my favourite dish at home is stuffed lamb and at work it is lemon artichokes. “My advice to anyone thinking of becoming a chef is to remember it's a way of life, not a job, so you have to love what you do.” 418-420 Sharrow Vale Road, Hunters Bar, Sheffield, S11 8ZP Tel: 0114 266 7719 www.thegreedygreekdeli.co.uk

Philip Ball The Angel “I have worked in Derbyshire for over ten years, as a head chef for a catering business for functions including Bolsover Castle, Thornbridge Hall and the Derbyshire Food and Drink Awards. “I’ve worked at The Angel for four months, where I serve classic British pub food, made from local seasonal produce. “I am quite an energetic person so I think the kitchen environment suits my personality. As every day is different, I have the opportunity to use my imagination and do something I enjoy.” Main Road, Holmesfield, Derbyshire, S18 7WT Tel: 0114 289 0336 www.angelatholmesfield.co.uk

Russell Caines The Devonshire Arms, Middle Handley “I started my career as a hotel waiter but started to pick up kitchen skills during my night shifts. When all the chefs had gone I’d switch everything on and teach myself. “My career has gone through stages ranging from moonlighting in kebab shops to working in Michelin-starred restaurants, to my own restaurant in North Yorkshire where it was one of a handful of places in the country with a Bib Gourmand. “I arrived as head chef at The Devonshire Arms in 2013. I really like that it retains the essence of being a pub with great British food and a friendly atmosphere. “We take our commitment to local sourcing all the way through to the bar. For instance, we serve Sheffield’s own gin, the Sir Robin of Locksley Distilled Artisan Gin, and we serve a great selection of local ales.” Lightwood Lane, Middle Handley, Derbyshire, S21 5RN Tel: 01246 434800 www.devonshirearmsmiddlehandley.com

Ross Sayles Nonnas “Like many chefs, I got my passion for cooking from my mum. I spent many happy hours as a boy cooking with her. “I previously managed the kitchen at Sheffield Theatres where I regularly cooked for actors, actresses and sports stars. I joined the Nonnas team six years ago and recently had the honour of becoming their head chef. “Being prepared for any eventuality is the mantra for the kitchen at Nonnas – like when Sylvester Stallone turned up with his entourage recently! We all rallied round to make it an evening to remember. “No two days are ever the same and I enjoy the challenge and the camaraderie in the Nonnas kitchen. It's a great place to work. 535-541 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, S11 8PR Tel: 0114 268 6166 www.nonnas.co.uk

Abdelkabir Barka The Mediterranean

Chef Ali Aligarh

“I’ve worked at The Mediterranean for more than 15 years, where I specialise in fish dishes. My signature dish is grilled lobster and beurre blanc sauce, seafood and caviar. “Being a chef is not an easy job because you have to give up your social life to look after your customers. But I love the atmosphere of busy nights and like to see people enjoying what I have cooked for them.”

“My desire to cook started in my mother’s kitchen, where she taught me the secrets of using spices to bring out the true flavours of a dish. “I worked in the family restaurant and spent years travelling and researching authentic recipes and cooking methods. I always wanted to create that same ‘home and family’ environment that I had when I cooked with my mum. “I have worked at Aligarh since the restaurant opened in October last year. Our food is mainly Kashmiri based but our extensive menu reflects dishes from throughout the different regions of the subcontinent. “For me, cooking is an art and it is my passion, but I think what I love the most is being able to cook food that my customers enjoy and food that creates lasting memories.”

WS In Brief

Beat the blue light menace with Martyn Kemp

Renishaw Hall & Gardens 2015 season opens with Piper, poetry and plants The owner of Renishaw Hall and Gardens, Alexandra Sitwell, is opening the 2015 season with the return of an important painting to the family collection. The John Piper Venetian Scene is back from restoration and sitting once again in pride of place in the front hall. There’s also poetry to look forward to this year, with Renishaw being part of the Derbyshire Literary Festival and hosting a special poetry workshop in May. It will draw inspiration from the work of Dame Edith Sitwell, Alexandra’s great aunt. There will also be special literary tours of the hall. And the popular Renishaw Hall & Gardens plant fairs are back in May and August. These are just some of the highlights for visitors to Renishaw Hall and Gardens this year, which opens on Friday 27 March.Visit www.renishaw-hall.co.uk for more information.

Can you ski and speak German? If the answer is yes, then you could become a ski instructor in just four weeks and get a paid job for the winter season in St. Anton, Austria, says Lee Townend – a professional ski instructor in Courchevel, France, and a trainer for the British Association of Snowsports Instructors. The ski instructor market is growing and the desire for British-speaking instructors in foreign ski schools means there is a fantastic opportunity to train and qualify in the summer and be ready to work by December. With all the current press articles and web discussions regarding the subject of British ski instructors working in European ski resorts, it is important to have the correct information and the correct qualifications, then you will be welcomed and employed by the country and ski school to which you apply. For more information, call Snoworks Gap on 0844 543 0503, email info@snoworksgap.co.uk or visit www.snoworksgap.co.uk.

Martyn Kemp Opticians (MKO) is highlighting ways to reduce the damaging effects on eyes caused by excessive exposure to blue light that is emitted by the sun and artificial light sources. Research has shown that exposure to too much blue light, particularly in the evening, from LEDs, computers, mobile phones, some TVs, fluorescent tubes and low energy light bulbs can cause migraines, sleeping problems and slight depression. Prolonged exposure can also contribute to the formation of cataracts and macular degeneration (MD), both of which are prevalent in older people. There are two possible solutions. One is to wear blue-lightblocking spectacles. In one study, people who wore them for three hours before bedtime reported major improvements in their sleep patterns and reduced the troubling after-effects of cataract operations. Martyn Kemp (pictured) said: “In the past, blue-blocking lenses have had to be tinted but now MKO can provide a clear coated lens to a patient’s own spectacle prescription that blocks out blue light and UV, giving the best eye protection possible.” The alternative is to take a diet supplement called Macushield, which builds up the pigment that protects the eye’s macular - the part of the eye providing clear and detailed central vision. Macushield tablets are available at MKO practices. Visit www.mko.co.uk for more information.

Bird trainer Heather heads for Costa Rica on a mission to save macaws

Heather Scott, head bird trainer at Sheffield’s Tropical Butterfly House, has travelled to Costa Rica to help save one of the world’s most endangered parrots by working with the Ara Project. The charity is dedicated to ensuring the future of Great Green Macaws and Scarlet Macaws in Costa Rica. Both of these species’ numbers have been devastatingly reduced as a result of capture for the pet trade, hunting and deforestation. Heather will be working voluntarily for the Ara Project for six weeks at their breeding centre in Punta Islita. Heather and her team have raised £1,500 in donations for them by selling wristbands during the animal and bird shows. The Tropical Butterfly House is open daily, year round and is located just five minutes from the M1, junction 31. See www.butterflyhouse.co.uk to plan your visit. WESTSIDE 110

Hathersage hub moves nearer

The Heart for Hathersage project is launching an ambitious fundraising campaign in a bid to create a distinctive central public space in the village. This community facility will provide a much-needed venue for local events and create a hub for those seeking to outdoor activities in the Peak District. The Heart for Hathersage scheme was launched 11 years ago and ever since, a team of local volunteers has worked tirelessly to develop the project. Thanks to National Lottery Awards totalling £20,000, Sheffieldbased Ares Landscape Architects have created the design. Planning permission has been granted – all that’s needed now is the money to build it and, as well as holding fundraising activities, the group is also asking for donations. To donate, visit localgiving.com/heartforhathersage. For more information about the scheme, visit heartforhathersage.org.uk.

Charity Christmas cards designed by Sheffield artist Pete McKee have raised thousands for a hospital arts programme and become his biggest seller yet. Thousands of packs of the cards, depicting pooches Frank and Tony, were sold in the run up to Christmas, drawing in more than £13,000 for Artfelt, The Children’s Hospital Charity’s arts programme. Artfelt transforms the hospital’s walls and spaces with bright art, helping children recover in an environment tailored to them. The programme also puts on workshops for youngsters to provide distraction during anxious moments – such as before an operation, and to break up long stays on the wards. Pete McKee is a patron of Artfelt and has been designing the charity’s Christmas cards for years. He said: “I'd like to thank everyone who has supported this year’s card, making it the most successful year yet. I know the much-needed money raised will be put to great use and I'm always blown away by the response the cards get and as ever very proud to be asked to produce the cards.” Visit www.tchc.org.uk/artfelt/donate to donate to Arfelt..

Truly unique Quality is at the heart of this long established bespoke furniture company.

D

avid J Martin is a name that people in Sheffield know they can trust when it comes to joinery. And with more than three decades in business, it’s

little wonder. Established in 1980, David J Martin have gained a reputation as one of the area’s very best when it comes to bespoke furniture. Throughout their 35 years in business, they’ve been making kitchens of the highest possible standard, as well as items for bedrooms, studies and bathrooms. Their aim is to provide quality and customer satisfaction – and it’s safe to say they’ve got both counts covered. Quality is at the heart of everything David J Martin do. Everything is made to measure in the company’s workshops – and all customers are welcome to visit to see their items being made by fully-qualified, experienced craftsmen. They pride themselves on their attention to detail, and can work in a wide range of styles. The showroom’s team of talented cabinet makers create everything to order, tailored specifically to each customer. You won’t find any mass-produced stock here as everything is custom-made, unique to you. Another way that David J Martin stand out from other showrooms is the spray-finish on their kitchen displays. Spraying surfaces is more durable and gives a more impressive look than hand painting. With larger companies, you’ll see doors advertised with the phrase ‘hi-gloss finish’, which actually means they are vinylwrapped. This does indeed produce a shiny look, but it means that you’ll see the join. At David J Martin, the spray-finish gives a much better result. And when it comes to customer satisfaction, this company is at the top of its game. Owner David has worked in the industry for 35 years and he and his team manage every project on site. They cover every aspect, including building work, structural calculations, electrical plumbing, plastering, tiling and decorating. With service like this, your experience is sure to be as stress-free as possible. The team also pride themselves on their first-rate after sales service. If you have any problems, queries or complaints, you can contact them and they’ll help to put it right – and that applies whether you’ve had your new kitchen for two weeks or ten years. It’s a truly caring approach – and with much of the business’s work coming from customer recommendations, it’s clearly a good one. As well as their workshop, you can see examples of David J Martin’s work in their showroom on Springvale Road. They have recently added a new display that features a working Aga. The cooker exhibit really stands out and is proving to be very popular. You don’t have to be a joinery expert to realise this company’s commitment to quality and customer service puts them way ahead of the pack. So choose a name you know you can trust – choose David J Martin. David J Martin 210 Springvale Road, Sheffield, S6 3NU Tel: 0114 268 6718 www.david-j-martin.co.uk
