Wosskow Brown’s head of private client, Emilda Morgans, explains how to plan for inheritance tax.
H
aving too much money is rarely seen as one of life’s great problems. But, in death, it can cause all sorts of issues if not planned for correctly. The inheritance tax thresholds were unchanged in the recent budget and are currently set at £325,000 for individuals and £650,000 for married couples. Anything above this is taxed at 40 per cent, which can amount to a huge proportion of particularly wealthy estates. If you don’t plan what to do with your money in plenty of time before your death, you and your family could be really losing out on what is rightfully yours. Fortunately, here at Wosskow Brown, we can advise you on several options that will help to reduce your tax liability and ensure that your family benefits from your estate, rather than the state. Among the many options available, gifting will allow you to give away your money either directly to a nominated person or into a trust to be accessed in the future. This can
also be applied to life insurance payouts and death in service benefits and is just one example of how to plan effectively for the future. With so many other options also to consider, it can be a very confusing and complicated subject to understand. Don’t take unnecessary risks – make an appointment with us and we will clearly explain all the solutions available to you. Why give your money to the state when you can secure the future for your loved ones? Careful planning now – with the help of professionals – ensures your money is inherited by the people who matter to you most.

hen life is busy it's all too easy to find yourself off balance, focusing all your energy on one project and not paying enough attention to other important areas.
busy mum-of-two, Nicola Spencer knows how difficult it can be to achieve a balanced lifestyle. Understanding how important it is to work with a happy team, she tries to weave all these elements into the day-to-day running of Spencers Estate Agents.

We are a close knit team who have become good friends and can often be seen socialising together. It is incredibly important that all the staff get along, share jokes, have each other’s backs and support one another. Our team know that there is no hierarchy here – we work together as equals and all share responsibility. Our clients too become part of our family when they sign on the dotted line to join us.
It has to be one of the most fulfilling things in life when you go to work and genuinely enjoy yourself. Each member of the team has an excellent work ethic and loves to get the best result for our clients. We feel a massive sense of satisfaction when we get a ‘thank you’. A competitive nature also helps us drive the very best results through. We are incredibly proud of our staff and our company.
Knowing that our clients are offered the very best financial advice is incredibly important. We use an award-winning, independent financial adviser, who we are very proud to recommend. Matt Harris of 3sixty Financial is one of the top independent brokers in the UK and we use him exclusively.

Connecting with the local community is really important to us. Last year we sponsored the Whirlow Hall Farm Trust and their Barn Dance, and the girls all participated in the Race for Life. This year, it’s all about the Buggy Push and finding ways to raise funds for Sheffield’s Special Care Baby Unit, which provided me and my partner Lee with much support last year.

We feel that we get to know our clients and are always sympathetic to their needs, as we believe that doing the right thing by people means that we can sleep well at night. We hope that by combining our business acumen with our sense of what is decent and respectful sets our business model apart from others.
This is where the Life Wheel can help. Commonly used by professional life coaches, it helps you consider each area in turn and assess which ones need more attention, so that you can spend equal time on each. Running a successful business and being a
Spencers is an independent, family-run residential estate agents that has been evolving since my parents founded the company in 1993. We have recently added to the family with twins Madison and Rudi, born in September 2014, so the family is growing as fast as the business!
A healthy mind and a healthy body go hand in hand and our fast paced environment means that we never have much time for lazing around. Whether we are running up the stairs at St Paul’s to beat the office record or showcasing new developments, our style is very proactive. We are proud to be armed with as much information as possible at our viewings to give you the very best experience.

Are you protected? It’s a question that many divorced couples are asking themselves after the recent case of Wyatt v Vince, says Best Solicitors’ Wendy Bailey.
T
he case in question involved a wife making a financial claim 30 years after separation and 20 years after divorce. The parties were new age travellers on separation but the husband began a successful business 13 years after divorce. The wife now sought £1.2million 30 years after separation! Wendy Bailey, Head of Family Law, at Best Solicitors comments: “We have always advised divorcing couples that a Decree Absolute does NOT end financial claims. We advise that in all relevant cases parties require a Clean Break Consent Order to prevent further claims being made in the future. Many clients, however, until now, have decided not to apply for an order as they did not think it is necessary.” The case of Wyatt has now proven, that
without a Clean Break, anyone can claim at any point, whether the parties have been apart for 6 years or 60. Do not leave possible claims hanging in the air – seek advice now. Come and visit one of our family specialists and tie up the loose ends. Who knows, you could receive an inheritance, a lottery win, build up a successful business – will your former wife or husband then want to receive a share of it? The risk is there – visit the Best family team and remove the risk now. WHITEHORNES Local, professional & competitive Spring into Action! Spring has arrived and early indications show that the successful start of the year is set to continue. Laura Charlesworth, Senior Valuer commented: “New instructions are being received thick and fast. Properties are selling in record time with many sales achieving over the asking price. Here at Whitehornes we are eager, excited and ready for the start of this busy period. We have a great rapport with our vendors and purchasers alike; without them there is simply no sale and it makes ‘cradling’ the sale from start to completion more rewarding.” Spring also marks the start of some exciting news which we are proud to share with you. As of April this year, Whitehornes will be sponsoring the Childrens Hospital to help raise funds. On completion of every sale made during the year, Whitehornes will make a contribution to this great charity. All ‘Team Whitehorne’ will be getting involved and are keen to raise additional funds for this heart-warming cause outside of work.

Unrivalled reputation From paving and edging to fencing and decking, you’ll find everything you need to landscape your home this spring at Pagets.
S
pring is finally upon us, which means that now is the time when many people plan to make improvements to their homes and gardens. Properties are often neglected during the winter months, so once the sun begins to shine again it’s time to tackle those projects, large and small. Over 50 years, Pagets has become established as one of the leading independent builder’s merchants in Sheffield with an unrivalled reputation for quality and service. Landscaping is very popular at this time of year and Pagets are well-equipped to meet this demand. Their 400 square metre landscaping display is open to both the public and trade customers, with products to suit all manner of tastes and budgets, with a wide range of paving, edging, decorative aggregates, top soil, walling, fencing, decking, sleepers and artificial grass. So rather than looking at catalogues or websites, call in at the Broadfield Road site, browse the display area and see the range of products in situ. Colours and textures cannot be reproduced in print or on screen – you have to see products ‘in the flesh’. New products, including natural sandstone and limestone paving, are now arriving for spring and they currently have ten different ranges to choose from. Natural stone paving is very popular at the moment and gives great value for money, but they also stock an extensive range of more traditional decorative patio slabs and driveway paving.
WESTSIDE 38
Pagets has two branches in Sheffield – Broadfield Road at Heeley and Infirmary Road at Hillsborough. Broadfield Road is home to the impressive paving display and stocks an extensive range of building, plastering, insulation, timber and landscaping materials. The Infirmary Road branch stocks a similar range and is easily accessible for customers in the north and west of the city. Pagets is open to everyone, both trade professionals and the general public. They offer free local delivery on most orders, six days a week. They operate a modern fleet of delivery vehicles, all equipped with specialist cranes for off-loading. All the staff are friendly and helpful and have a vast amount of knowledge built up over the years. The company recently became an accredited Living Wage Employer, which means they pay all their employees at least the living wage (which is considerably higher than the minimum wage) to ensure they have a decent standard of living. The company believes that acknowledging the hard work,
dedication and loyalty of the staff is quite simply ‘the right thing to do’. Continually reinvesting in the business, Pagets is now beginning a major redevelopment of their site on Broadfield Road. This will include improved customer access and parking, a wider range of products and services, a new trade sales area and office, a purpose-built warehouse and improved yard layout and space. Despite this ongoing project, trading will continue as normal and every effort is being made to keep disruption at the site to an absolute minimum. To this day, the company remains a local, family-owned, independent business. Offering exceptional customer service is what has allowed Pagets to thrive and this latest development project will continue this success into the future. WS Home & Garden
Bring the outside, inside Spring clean your home by injecting bold colours, cool concepts and a touch of the great outdoors, writes Will Hardy.
A
have seen a great increase in popularity as homeowners try to make their interiors resemble the natural beauty of an English garden as much as possible. This concept has blossomed onto curtains and drapes, which also feature lively floral patterns. Flowers, cushions and decorative accessories will give your living space an instant update without breaking the bank. Bright naturally coloured rugs on hard wooden floors are replacing dark lightabsorbing carpets, which add a nice mixture of warmth and safety to the open outdoors concept trying to be achieved this season.
new season is upon us and now is the time to fill your home with uplifting colours, light fabrics and floral prints to channel the soothing calm of the British countryside. Spring comes with a vibrant, floral colour scheme attached and the hottest trends at this time of year tend to follow this theme. As the outdoors gets lighter and brighter, so should your home. Patterns and geometric lines become looser and more blurred and colours change from deep winter hues to vivid cobalt blues, ochre yellows and open outdoorsy greens. If you are stuck for inspiration on how to bring the outdoors in for spring, these colour schemes and styling pattern trends should help you adapt each area of your home to the coming season.
Bathrooms Feature floor tiles proved popular in 2014 and show no signs of falling out of favour. The same goes for freestanding baths as they create striking, impressive bathroom sculptures. A new trend for the bathroom this spring is clever water controls. Gone are the days when you twisted a tap and water came out – people now want touch panels that allow them to control every aspect of their shower, from water direction and pressure to the exact mix of cold and hot water to create the perfect temperature for the optimal shower experience. Modernistic styling is also falling out of demand and being replaced by the concept of natural beauty – relating back to the idyllic outdoors portrayed by spring. Stone and wood materials and accessories are very hot as a result. Showers are also altering to fit the relaxed spring theme, so closed-off cramped cubicles have given way to large spacious walk-ins.
Kitchens Airy, open shelving and minimal wall cabinets create a warm, lived-in look whilst maintaining functionality and allowing other design
WESTSIDE 44
Garden features to have the attention they deserve. Wallpaper is making a comeback in certain styles – a stand out, repetitive pattern gives a room elegance without looking too brash. Wallpaper also has the benefit of being a cheap and easy way to give your kitchen an update with instant impact. This season’s overall theme for the kitchen is to marry modernistic and traditional styling, in order to preserve all the functionality of the modern kitchen while retaining the warm and cosy atmosphere of its traditional variant.
Living rooms and bedrooms Bringing the outdoors inside is the prominent motif this season. Plants are starting to escape the clutches of the garden and lively colours are finding their way into the home. Bright pinks, blues, yellows and greens
Gardening is becoming an increasingly popular pastime. As we propel ourselves further into the technological age, many people are relying on gardening as an escape back to a more peaceful, hands-on time. Today’s work climate also demands the majority of people live within an urban environment, meaning some people don’t have the pleasure of having a sizable garden. Window sill gardening, indoor allotments and house plants that can thrive in small spaces have become very fashionable. Meanwhile, the increase in vivid colour trends within the home has overflowed into the garden itself, where eye-catching flowers have burst into dominance. Fiery nasturtium, crocosmia and ‘for your eyes only’ roses are good examples of plants that were previously seen as too much of an overstatement but are now becoming the norm. As people try and move away from the neat confines of everyday life, the ‘bed head’ method of gardening has become a frontrunner. Leaving plants to grow as they please not only satisfies the concept of nature running its course, but also has become a mark of individuality.

Simon Lowe specialises in taking intrepid trekkers to Everest… but, as he tells Stephanie Burns, only a select few make it to the top.
Mountain man on top of the world
Simon Lowe
I
t’s my Everest’ is a term not usually associated with the actual mountain. But for the managing director of commercial expedition company Jagged Globe, Simon Lowe, it can be applied in literal terms. Because despite climbing the mountain countless times over the last few decades, he’s never – as those in the know refer to it – ‘summited’. Not personally, anyway. That doesn’t mean he has unfinished business. In his view, being leader of a group effort – when a team works together to allow just one or two to conquer the final ascent – is all that matters. And he’s done that several times. It’s this selfless philosophy that has secured Jagged Globe’s reputation as one of the world’s top trekking companies. Right here in Sheffield. Lucky us. Of course, when I say ‘us’, I’m not referring to me and – sorry – most of you. Because while Everest base camp jaunts are now all the rage for your average hill walker – we all heard the ‘too much poo on the mountain’ story earlier this year – conquering the world’s highest peak is another matter, and one only the real climbers can have a stab at. “We run one 64-day Everest summit trip a year as there’s a twomonth window during April and May when it’s OK to go – and you only want reasonably good people on that trip,” says Simon.
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Up to 12 climbers who fit Jagged Globe’s strict criteria are recruited for this annual trek. It’s not cheap at £40,000 but, with a brilliant track record of getting climbers to the top of the mountain, it’s one of the best chances you’ll get to ‘summit’. “It’s uncomfortable emotionally and physically and we have to know that if something goes awry your decision making will be appropriate enough to get yourself out of the situation.” Former military man Simon knows better than most how important a sturdy mental state can be if the unexpected happens. In his army days, he once spent four days thinking he might die at any second while trapped in a tent on one of Everest’s slightly smaller neighbours, Kirat
Chuli, during a particularly fierce storm. And though there have been other near misses, in almost 30 years of business Jagged Globe has never lost a trekking team member on Everest. They did, however, lose a Sherpa, Pasang Karma, when the deadliest Everest avalanche on record hit the mountain last April, killing 16 guides in total. In spite of the tragedy, there has been no decline in take up for this year’s expeditions. “No-one has been under any doubt about the fact that you can go to Everest and get killed. People tend to be very self-selecting and, if they think they’re not going to make it to the top, they’ll tell us. Generally speaking, people are not reckless.” Longer trips that give climbers more chance to acclimatise help Jagged Globe trump its competitors. This also means a trip with them is more expensive, but it’s a small price to pay for both safety and success, and they have an excellent record for both. Risk, of course, is a huge part of the appeal for any adventurer – where would the thrill lie otherwise? But for Simon there’s another factor that has kept him returning to the Himalayas again and again – summit or not. “It’s immensely hard, there’s no two ways about it,” he states. “It’s like running a marathon; you don’t enjoy it at the time but it’s the achievement afterwards. “And there is simply nothing like the sense of freedom you get from being completely free of the modern world.”

World-class competition Combining thrilling equestrian sport with entertainment for all the family, the Dodson and Horrell International Chatsworth Horse Trials is an event like no other.
S
erene countryside, flowing manes and the sound of thundering hooves can only mean one thing: the highlight of the equestrian calendar – Chatsworth International Horse Trials – is on the horizon. You can expect three days (15-17 May) of thrilling world-class competition, combining beautiful dressage, nail-biting show jumping and dramatic cross country around the parkland at Chatsworth. Set in the heart of the Peak District, the house and its magnificent grounds are home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. The couple are known equine sports lovers – the Duke served as chairman of Ascot for over a decade, while the Duchess owns a number of prize-winning animals, which makes Chatsworth – and its 1,000 acres of beautiful parkland – the perfect location for these trials. The weekend showcases some of the world’s leading horses and riders, attracting spectators from far and wide. Previous winners include Andrew Nicholson, Pippa Funnell and William Fox-Pitt. Although the horses and their riders will, of course, take centre stage throughout the weekend, there’s also an exciting varied programme of arena events too. This includes a sheep show, with New Zealander Richard
WESTSIDE 52
Savory and his presenters entertaining and educating with their fantastic sheep. The highlight will be the sheep show hustle or dancing sheep. If two-stepping sheep aren’t really your thing, there will be a falconry display, the British scurry and trials driving, have-a-go dog agility and dog show, pony club mounted games and Mullenscote Gun Dog display, which will demonstrate varying breeds and ages from puppies to fully trained dogs. Away from the arena, there is a children’s
entertainment area with mini Land Rovers, farmyard animals, face painting, a bouncy castle and a giant slide. Plus over 100 highquality trade stands selling a wide selection of country clothing, equestrian products, fashion accessories, crafts and delicious food. The Dodson and Horrell International Chatsworth Horse Trials truly is three days of thrilling equestrian sport, combined with entertainment for all the family in the beautiful surroundings of Chatsworth – an event not to be missed.

Your Guide to Eventing: Equestrian eventing isn’t mere horseplay – it’s a showcase of skill and determination. Its three disciplines – dressage, cross country and show jumping – are designed to test both horses and riders in a variety of different ways. The successful competitor will be able to demonstrate an ability to move seamlessly between them – but that’s no easy task…
VIP membership area: Enjoy exclusive access to the VIP Membership area, which offers an enhanced experience in relaxed surroundings with exclusive ringside access for the show jumping action, fresh food, bar service, garden area and private toilets. Dressage While dressage may seem the calmest of the three disciplines, it’s arguably the most difficult – one that demands many years of training in order to succeed. ‘Horse ballet’, as it’s known, requires the rider to display precise control of the horse as it performs a series of movements, including pirouettes and gaits. Points are awarded for grace and fluidity, and the aim is to show perfect harmony between horse and rider.
Cross country Considered by many to be the highlight of the trials, cross country is fast paced and action packed. Horse and rider race against the clock around Chatsworth Park on the banks of the River Derwent. The challenging course is filled with seemingly impossible fences and solid obstacles – including some of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire’s hand-carved wooden sculptures. There’s an obvious amount of skill involved, but this discipline involves a fair bit of courage too – not for the faint-hearted.
Show jumping The show jumping stage of the trials takes place in an arena and sees competitors tackling fences made of brightly coloured poles. As ever, athleticism and control are of vital importance – penalties are given for every second over the allotted time, horse disobedience, knocking off a pole and failing to complete the course in the set order.

WS Interview Main pictures: Fiona Scott-Maxwell
COURSES FOR HORSES Words: Hannah Pearson
The man in charge of creating the testing fences for the Chatsworth International Horse Trials reveals some of his trade secrets.
A
s one of the most hotlyanticipated events of the equestrian calendar approaches, all eyes are on the team at Chatsworth International Horse Trials as they prepare for another fantastic weekend of eventing. From 15-17 May, winding around the grounds of the beautifully preserved Chatsworth Estate will be a course of around 4,000 metres, comprised of a variety of obstacles and jumps. The course is different every year, with new challenges and an abundance of obstacles varying in height, size and style. This year, hundreds of spectators are expected to show up, eager to see how the David Evans
WESTSIDE 54
horses take to the course. Tasked with the prestige and responsibility of such a challenge is five-time Olympian Ian Stark, who continues in his role as course designer of the three-star tracks, assisted by Olympic course builder David Evans, who creates the one-star course. With up to 40 jumps in place, the course is designed to thrill spectators and challenge riders while maintaining safety boundaries. Most of the obstacles are inspired by the stunning natural surroundings and are made using natural resources. David Evans first became involved with Chatsworth back in 1997 and is
now busy preparing the one-star track for this year’s horse trials. He is well-known for his carved logs and animal sculptures that feature on the courses. His most famous log carvings to date are the crouching dragons on the Hong Kong Olympic course in 2008 and the paired lions and birds that travel with him to many events. “The aim is always to build a course that is technically challenging for the riders, but that the horses can understand. There are a few new sponsors this year that we will be doing some decoration for and we try to

‘Chatsworth is a truly special event and that is down to the people involved and the wonderful surroundings.’ make the course look different every year,” says David. “There are changes on all of the courses but we like to keep that a little bit of a secret! However, I can say that we have done a lot of ground work going into the second water.” A lot of preparation goes into making Chatsworth the spectacular event that people know and love, so Ian and David have been hard at work since September last year. “The ground work occurs through the winter, weather permitting, and all the building work must be completed by April. By the end of April I like to have all the portable jumps out, so that the real preparation can begin in May, such as birching, sanding and painting. “A lot of thought goes into designing and building the track because each course is designed to utilise the natural terrain’s features such as banks, mounds and ditches. We always want to produce a flowing track so after the horses and riders have got going, depending on the combinations and features, fences come into play. “Ian is a pleasure to work with and it’s great to listen to his experiences. His understanding of how horses think and what they can do is fantastic. We work very well together and have shared many a gin and tonic at the end of a long day!” Working with horses is a way of life for David, who started riding at Pony Club when he was just 10 years old and now travels around the world to design and build crosscountry courses for high profile events. Having begun his course building career at Holker Hall Horse Trials in the late 1980s, David began full-time building in 1992 and has gone from strength to strength since, building for designers such as Mike Etherington-Smith, Ian Stark, Captain Mark Phillips and Eric Winter. He is an expert in his field, having been closely involved in bringing the safety of horse and rider into course building and XC jump design. David has recently been awarded The British Eventing Bill Thompson Trophy for his modernising approach to cross country course building. Over a 12-month season, David and his indefatigable team manage to fit in around 15 horse trials in the UK and abroad. The highest status of these include Chatsworth CIC3* in May, followed by Bramham CIC3* and CCI3* and Luhmühlen CCI3 and 4* in June, rounded off in September by Blenheim Palace CIC and CCI3. David has worked on some exceptional
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
courses in his time – the pinnacle of which has to be designing the cross country course for the Olympic event in Hong Kong. He describes the experience as being ‘absolutely out of this world’, despite the challenges it presented with language barriers, unpredictable weather, the logistics of being away from home with suppliers he didn’t know and, of course, missing his family. But, for now, all eyes are on Chatsworth as the main event is just a few weeks away. “I have a love-hate relationship with Chatsworth because of the weather – you never know what it’s going to do! Sometimes we can get the jumps out four weeks before the event but other times not until 10 days before. “Sometimes the team have to park on the roads and walk the equipment out to the jumps, other times we can drive. Each year is different and we’re definitely kept on our toes. “When everything looks good, is finished on time and ready to go – that’s what I look forward to every year. There is such a great sense of anticipation. “Chatsworth is a truly special event and that is down to the people involved and the wonderful surroundings. The energy and commitment from the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire at the very top of the organisation right down to the last volunteer is what makes Chatsworth stand out. The passion of all the people involved is amazing.”

n 2014, production at the barn brewery could no longer keep pace with demand and main production was relocated to new premises at Ashford in the Water. Here, a new larger brewery has been installed to help meet the challenges and opportunities of the next ten years. WS Property
After a strong start to the year, the property market continues to look positive, says Juliette Prosser, Property Sales Manager at Blundells.
Hitting the heights
S
ince the economic crash in 2007 it might seem like there has been little to be positive about in the property market with declining house prices across Derbyshire, and it would be easy to feel that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. However, in 2014 the market saw a noticeable improvement in viewing activity, the number of offers and houses starting to sell more easily. This progress came as a result of general economic growth creating confidence in buyers, the increased availability of good mortgage products and more recently, the change in stamp duty thresholds. The beginning of 2015 has seen a strong start to the year, indicating that the good news is here to stay and as the spring season gets underway, Derbyshire property owners can expect to see a continuation of positive activity, with now being a good time to think
WESTSIDE 58
about selling if you have been holding back in recent years. Whilst property values are unlikely to increase significantly they should hold steady and providing the houses are competitively priced we should see the market moving well, particularly with the return of people looking for second homes and investing in property for residential and holiday rental purposes. At Blundells we are delighted to see this improved property market and remain dedicated to helping our clients achieve the best possible sale price, whilst also focusing on giving potential purchasers an excellent service. The Hathersage office has long been established in the area, selling properties across the Hope Valley and around Chatsworth for over 25 years. We are experienced in selling a wide variety of property, from traditional stone cottages to prestigious residences and pride ourselves on giving each individual client a personal service along with a proactive approach. We understand that selling your home can be complicated and stressful and that different circumstances surround each transaction, so our focus is on understanding individual needs and ensuring the process is as smooth as possible.
With your own Property Sales Manager who will value your property and then continue to deal with all offer negotiations and post sale legal progression, you can be assured that you will receive commitment from an experienced member of staff who will work alongside you the whole way. We also offer a range of services such as free mortgage advice, excellent conveyancing solicitors and independent surveys. Get ready for the new season
The look of Armani spring/ summer
Izzi of Baslow is full of new Spring/Summer collections, including additions from Armani, Marc Cain and Max Mara, writes Fiona Barber.
T
here are many reasons to love spring; lighter nights, lambs frolicking in the fields and flowers adding a splash of colour to our gardens. But for the region’s fashionistas this time of year means one thing – the spring/summer collections are in. And for those with a taste for Marc Cain, Max Mara Weekend and Max Mara Studio, look no further than leading boutique, Izzi of Baslow. After a renovation earlier this year the boutique has doubled in size. Owner Izzi Bennett says: “We’ve got thousands of items in stock now and have taken on different brands like Armani Jeans, Kennel and Schmenger shoes and boots, Really Wild Clothing Company tweed and Spanish Boots.” The Armani range not only features jeans, but also bags and separates, offering daywear style with a difference. Izzi of Baslow is one of the biggest Marc Cain stockists in the UK and ladies travel from far afield to browse the extensive selection. To ensure customers get the most from this popular brand, Izzi hosts regular Marc Cain events. The seven experienced staff at the store
all provide excellent customer service and are on hand to help if you have a fashion dilemma, are stuck in a wardrobe rut, or are simply in need of some Armani friendly advice. Let these professional assistants guide you through the many rails of coveted labels. With the new S/S15 stock now in, you might be wondering what’s on trend this season. Izzi says: “There are many fashion influences this season such as spots and stripes, bright colour pops. We have a lot of pastels in too – we try and cover many different styles.” They now stock Hostie Hats designed by Lucinda Hostombe, which are great for transforming an understated outfit to amazing, while Luisa Cerano is tipped as the one to watch and Max Mara is simply stunning. Be the first to hear about new collections, competitions, news and pictures – follow Izzi on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest. As Izzi regularly updates these social media channels, there is always something new and exciting to see.You can also visit www.izziofbaslow.com to sign up for emails with up-to-the-minute details and launch deals. Tricia and Becca have known each other for over three years. They met through Sharing Lives, a Sheffield City Council service which helps support independent living for adults. Becca needs a little extra care and support to enjoy her life, so she goes to Tricia’s house some weekends for respite care, to give her usual carers a break and get the time and space she needs. Becca talks fondly of her time at Tricia’s; “I really look forward to when it’s my weekend at Tricia’s house. I’m really ready for it - without a break, things used to escalate and get a little tense at times, so a break makes me feel refreshed when I go back home.” Tricia adds; “My husband and I talk fondly about the people we’ve supported through Sharing Lives. The best thing is feeling that we are working together to make things better. I think it’s worth getting involved. You don’t need a spare room to be part of Sharing Lives, you just need some time and a heart for people.” There are many more adults across Sheffield who need a little extra help and support. All Sharing Lives carers receive payment and training. Anyone over 18 can apply. To find out more about becoming a Sharing Lives carer contact Sharing Lives 0114 2735185, email sharinglives@sheffield.gov.uk or visit www.sheffield.gov.uk/sharinglives for information.

With small class sizes, individual attention given to each pupil, specialist music and sports teachers, an excellent partnership with parents, supervised care from 7.30am6.15pm, on-site meal preparation, close links with the senior school and a tailor-made curriculum – to name just a few of the school’s many outstanding features – it’s little wonder that Sheffield High pupils grow into such confident, considerate young women. Its membership of the influential Girls’ Day School Trust – the UK’s leading network of independent girls’ schools – gives parents even greater confidence in the school’s ability to provide the very best education for their daughters. Headteacher, Anne Jones, who joined the school 20 years ago, first experienced Sheffield High School as a mum, so she knows exactly what discerning parents expect. “Our aim is for every girl to reach her
WESTSIDE 86
potential within an exciting, challenging and inspirational environment where there is always lots to do,” she says. “Girls and boys learn in different ways and here we are able to take an approach that suits our girls perfectly.” Pupils excel in traditionally maleorientated subjects such as ICT, maths and technology as they’re able to fully develop their confidence in these areas. Science is also a high priority and the specialist science zone, designed specifically for primary school learning, ensures the girls always look forward to their weekly two-hour science sessions. The school also provides an outstanding selection of more than 30 extra-curricular activities including sports such as netball and hockey, drumming, string and wind bands, arts and crafts and technology and there’s even a computer coding club. Every member of staff runs at least one of these clubs, so that their broad range of skills is fully utilised.
During free time, there are plenty more opportunities for the girls to expend their energy in the school’s safe and stimulating environment. The newly refurbished playground, which pupils helped to design, boasts a host of exciting and colourful play equipment. Throughout their education, the girls are mentored by senior students, who act as role models for the Infant and Junior School girls. Sixth formers even come back to where their journey began to work with younger students and encourage them to exceed their own expectations. Taking the first steps into a new environment can be a daunting prospect for a young girl. Knowing that she not only has the support of caring, specialist staff but also access to outstanding facilities ensures that each girl settles into school life quickly at Sheffield High – and that she is well supported throughout her education. Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the third most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?
Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £16m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org
Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.
Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.
Are we all about day pupils? No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.
Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.
All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. “ We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children of First Term Free. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”
Enjoy a 6th Form education at QE and pay no fees!.... ith just a matter of weeks until this year’s muchanticipated Westside Restaurant Awards, competition is hotting up in the region’s eateries. Our judges are out and about, busily debating the merits of restaurants across the region in various categories – including the coveted Westside Restaurant of the Year. There is also one other extra special category where our reviewers take a backseat – The Westside Readers’ Choice Award. We know you have strong opinions when it comes to dining out; now we want to know what your favourite restaurant is. The Westside Readers’ Choice award cuts across all boundaries. Whether your favourite restaurant is a fine dining venue, a classy café or something in between, all votes are equal. Last year, readers voted Lokanta – Broomhill’s fabulous Turkish restaurant – as their top choice. Owners Ruth and Faruk Gunay were thrilled to take home what they considered to be the best award of the night. Our readers are a discerning bunch and the announcement of this particular prize is always a highlight of our evening. Cast your vote now by visiting our website – www.regionalmagazine.co.uk – and following the link. All entries will go into a prize draw, and one lucky winner will receive dinner for two at their favourite restaurant on us. All votes must include a home address and contact details; multiple entries from the same email address will be disqualified. The closing date is Friday 8 May so be quick and don’t miss your opportunity to cast your vote. For the owners and hard-working staff of all the nominated restaurants, our awards dinner is an opportunity to celebrate the excellent range of dining-out venues on our doorstep. These are the longest running and most prestigious dining awards in Sheffield and North Derbyshire. The winners will be announced at our glitzy awards ceremony at Baldwin’s Omega on Monday 8 June, which promises to be a great evening.

Maurizio added: “Sylvester Stallone couldn’t have been a nicer and more down to earth guest. It really felt like he was one of the family. In fact he loved it that much he didn’t want to leave!” The newly-refurbished Nonnas Sheffield has had a design makeover courtesy of Paul Brady. He has successfully blended its rustic roots with 21st century Tuscany and made the bar the centrepiece throughout the whole day rather than it just coming alive at night which happened previously. Nonnas’ trademark coffee, home-made Italian cakes and the newly-upgraded free, state-of-the-art Wi-Fi is proving especially popular in the day time. Sylvester Stallone was one of the first

A bright future for Nonnas Sheffield Though a lot has changed in 18 years, the future has never been more exciting for one of the area’s original and most popular independent operators. Maurizio Mori said: “We’ve always strived to offer the most authentic Italian experience and customers can expect nothing but the best. Every business needs a makeover and Nonnas Sheffield is no different but even we’ve been surprised just how popular our new look and feel has been. “The fact Sylvester Stallone was the first person to dine at Tavolo Del Capitano and our new spring menus are proving a big hit shows Nonnas Sheffield is firmly back in business.“ Bookings can be made on 0114 268 6166 and online at www.nonnas.co.uk.

people to enjoy a meal at the new Tavolo Del Capitano – a new feature piece which is proving very popular as a setting for business lunches, parties and special evening celebrations as it can comfortably seat ten people. Sheffield artist Paul Staveley is responsible for one of its other talking points – the stunning new mural of Pizza Di Montecatini Alto that provides a breathtaking backdrop for Tavolo Del Capitano. Ross Sayles – who first started in the kitchen at Nonnas six years ago – is now head chef. He has just unveiled the new spring menus – a mix of classic Italian with a modern twist. He said: “Nonnas is passionate about ensuring the food they serve is representative of the area of Tuscany they originate from. So much so that proprietor Maurizio took me over to spend time in their

There’s little doubt Nonnas offers one of the most authentic Italian experiences anywhere in the UK but if you really want the true experience they’re happy to assist. Their Casa di Nonnas holiday villa is available to hire and taking bookings for 2015. Set in the idyllic hills of Northern Tuscany, the luxury accommodation is the ideal way to sample the homeland that was the inspiration for Nonnas Sheffield. The converted rustic farmhouse is set within easy reach of Florence, Pisa, Lucca and Modena and stands within a magical, unspoilt setting surrounded by olive and fruit trees. Casa di Nonnas was borne out of Nonnas customers repeatedly asking for advice on where to go in Tuscany. In the end they thought it as easy to provide a base for their entire holiday! onnas has been through many changes over the last 20 years, but while delis, bakeries and cycling hang-outs can come and go, the one gloriously consistent thing for me has been the kitchen serving up classic gutsy old-school Tuscan cuisine. The latest makeover to this alpha papa of Ecclesall Road restaurants is most definitely a change for the better. If you thought the previous colour scheme was becoming just a little gloomy, you will be won over by a new look that is brighter, lighter and much more user-friendly. We dined in the newly refurbished space next to the kitchen – they’ve moved the wine racks, and expanded what used to be a slightly cramped dining space into a lovely relaxed area with an overview of the restaurant – ideal for that great Nonnas pastime of people watching. Don’t spend too long gazing at the bronzed and the beautiful though, there is a new spring/summer menu to digest. It is a nicely balanced mix of old favourites like Lasagne Della Nonna, made here to

Grandma’s original recipe since 1996, and new dishes. We bought a little time by ordering some home made bread and olives. Seeing as we were celebrating the revival of a Sheffield classic, a cocktail from the revamped bar seemed in order and a Nonnas Spritz – a perky blend of Aperol, Italian cider and soda water – matched the mood perfectly. Starters brought an opportunity to check out the pasta menu, via a half portion of mixed seafood steamed with white wine, garlic, chilli, parsley and olive oil in linguini. When it comes to cooking pasta it’s all about split second timing; chef was spot-on here, and the seafood, heady with garlic and herbs, was lovely. My companion’s crab cakes provided a substantial seafood hit and were served with preserved lemon and parsley mayonnaise. For mains my pan-fried cod, served with chargrilled baby leeks and sundried tomato relish, was another perfectly cooked dish, The cod, with crispy skin and moist flakes of flawless white flesh, could not have been bettered. This particular main course also illustrated one of Nonnas’ strengths, the stellar list of Italian wines. I was looking for a light red wine that would match and while the recommendation, a slightly bubbly Bornarda, took me out of my comfort zone, it worked perfectly. Across the table a serious hunk of chargrilled sirloin steak was a fine match for the accompanying bowl of smoked pancetta and bean stew. This was old school Tuscan cooking for hearty appetites, the sort of dish

Nonnas has been delivering with panache for the last two decades. For dessert a deconstructed passion fruit cheesecake with passion fruit syrup and jelly was deliciously light, thanks to a sprinkling of buttery crumb base. Chocolate tart was a more solid proposition and equally special, served with amarena cherries and amaretto ice cream. There are no wild surprises on the latest Nonnas menu but it is nicely balanced, and with the relaxed new look to boot, one of Sheffield’s veteran restaurants has definitely regained its swagger.

A real Rome from home From atmosphere to authentic cuisine, many factors contribute to an entertaining evening at Rossi’s, as Richard Smith discovered.
A
little bit of theatre always helps when it comes to making a restaurant stand out from the crowd. And that’s something that Rossi’s, housed in an imposing former bank building on Sharrow Lane, has in abundance. For a start, there’s the uniformed doorman who ushers you through the door and into the jaw-dropping marble interior. Then there’s the Sistine Chapel-style fresco ceiling, the atmospheric lighting and the reproduction of Michelangelo’s nude David (no jokes about Italian sausages, please) centre-stage in the middle of the room. “It’s to make you feel like it’s a little bit of Italy here in Sheffield,” says proud owner Vito Restaino. And, you know what? It does. A real Rome from home, you might say. But if the surroundings are designed to put you firmly in mind of the la bella Italia, it’s the big, bold rustic flavours of the food that provide the authentic taste of the old country. Portions are generous so make sure you come hungry. Seafood figures strongly on the extensive, reasonably-priced menu so we raised the curtain on our meal with two fishy starters. Mare e Monti – sea and mountain – featured prawns, mushrooms, garlic and mozzarella all baked in a beautifully rich tomato sauce. My tender baby squid, fried with peppers, onions and garlic, came with a tomato and wine sauce enlivened with just the right amount of chilli. We were spoilt for choice when it came to main courses but a classic Italian dish, Pollo Ripieno, proved to be a winner. Succulent chicken breast came stuffed with spinach, peppers, mushrooms and garlic and covered with a creamy sauce. Torn between more seafood – the intriguingly named Rombu Rosso (that’s halibut to you) – and something a bit more land-based, I eventually chose a beautifullycooked lamb shank from the specials menu.
WESTSIDE 96
The meat, on a bed of garlicky mashed potato, melted off the bone to into a dense, glossy, wine-rich sauce dotted with whole cherry tomatoes. Both dishes were substantial platefuls as they were, but vegetables came served onto side plates at the table – another nicely theatrical little flourish. Dessert seemed almost like a dish too far after all that, but I’m a sucker for refreshing lemon sorbet covered in limoncello liqueur – and what’s not to like about that – while over the table, a Torte Monterosa, a sort of strawberry – jelly – cake confection brought down the curtain on a memorable evening. It’s an entertaining place, Rossis, made even more so by occasional live music provided by Vito’s son Max, a talented young singer whose debut single, Obvious, has just been released (you can hear Max on his website, www.max-music.co.uk). It has been a fixture on Sheffield’s dining scene for more than 30 years, during which time many of its rivals have come and gone. But on this evidence, the Rossi’s show is one that is going to run and run. Bravo! Take a bow Vito…

As we enjoyed pre-dinner drinks and a selection of olives in the lounge, it was clear the evening would include more than a standard three-course meal. Head chef Mark Vernon is the mastermind behind the adventurous a la carte menu and we first got a taste of his skills with the goat’s cheese and leek samosa starter. This Indian classic with a twist came team with a mint-onion relish, and a shallot and chive salad - a sensational arrangement of tastes and textures. My partner tucked in to the black pudding and smoked pancetta salad, with soda bread
croutons, delicate roast baby apples and onion chutney; a sublime savoury-sweet combination that set high expectations for what was ahead. A beetroot, vodka and apple gazpacho amuse-bouche was the ideal palate refresher before we enjoyed our mains. The fillet of sea trout with caper, saffron and lemon butter came accompanied by a sunblush tomato and a ratte potato crisp salad and was a wonderfully light dish packed with flavour. Across the table, my companion savoured the beautifully tender venison haunch, beetroot and fondant potatoes, chantenay carrots and –a special mention must be given to the luxurious – chocolate jus. The just-right portion sizes allowed room for dessert and – being a sucker for an old classic – my partner couldn’t resist the jam roly-poly. Far from the school dinner approach, this neat sponge cake came oozing with alluring jam balanced with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. My pot au chocolate, topped with rich coffee cream and served with crisp coconut biscotti, was a deliciously indulgent ending to a truly sensational evening. It’s clear Vernon has flair and an eye for detail and it is this, combined with the tranquil surroundings and attentive staff, that make dining at The Maynard a truly memorable experience. And after checking out the many special offers online, it won’t be long before we’re back to indulge in an overnight stay too. Visit www.themaynard.co.uk for more details.

A true family welcome The Fletchers have been running the Grouse Inn for 50 years and it’s the hearty food and cosy atmosphere that keeps the customers coming back. Words and photography: Fiona Barber

cenic walks, unbeatable views and country pubs – just a few of the many temptations the gorgeous Peak District has to offer. On a drive out to one such pub – the renowned Grouse Inn at Longshaw – we decided to take full advantage of the cool spring sunshine and set off into the rolling hills, working up an appetite for the feast ahead. As the sun began to set and the night’s chill set in we were glad to be welcomed by the roaring warmth of the wood-burning fire. Run by Mark and Sally Fletcher and their two daughters, Peta and Annie, they not only celebrate 50 years at the helm this year, but will also welcome a new member to the family as Peta is due to give birth in August. With an extensive blackboard of specials, as well as a regular menu, punters are truly spoilt for choice. As devout cheese lovers, there were no qualms about what we would have to start. The baked camembert, described on the menu as perfect for two to share, was deliciously creamy and came accompanied by a fantastic savoury-sweet combination of warm sliced crusty bread, red onion chutney and melon. We scraped and savoured the last drop of gooey goodness from its casing and couldn’t have been happier with our choice. This indulgence continued with an Icelandic battered cod – a whale-sized portion of melt-in-the-mouth fish with a delicious crisp coating – accompanied by a generous portion of mushy peas and golden chips. While my partner tucked into a pub classic, I enjoyed the pork belly from the

specials board. Two large pieces of tender meat arrived with a crunchy layer of crackling, flavoursome sweet potato and spring onion mash, with a luxurious cream peppercorn sauce. If there’s one thing for sure, The Grouse Inn certainly doesn’t scrimp on portions. Taking a well-needed break, we soaked up the bustling Saturday night atmosphere. With wooden beams, a selection of real ales and classic landscape paintings The Grouse Inn is, in many ways, every bit the typical country pub. But there are also quirks – like the wall-mounted stuffed toy moose head and the hundreds of various foreign bank notes embedded in the glass topped tables – that fill it with unique character. Over the years the pub has seen more punters coming to eat out, rather than for late-night drinking. To keep things fresh head chef Robert Kodheli changes the specials menu every other week with an array of meat, fish and vegetarian options. While the renowned hearty meat pie still attracts foodies from far and wide, the homemade puds are proving extremely popular too. The brownie, which was made by Peta, proved to be a dish of utter chocolate indulgence, complete with chocolate sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, while across the table I enjoyed the wonderfully tart rhubarb crumble. Both were a delicious ending to a hearty meal and left us feeling suitably refuelled from our walk. It seems that The Grouse Inn has it all, great food, spectacular views, and most importantly, a warm welcome from the Fletcher family.

Burgers, barbecue and more With a reputation stretching back over 30 years, does Yankees still deliver a lip-smackingly good American experience?
A
nyone who knows their way around Sheffield will have heard of Yankees. The restaurant, whose reputation for epic burgers and mouth-watering American barbecue has been built up over more than 30 years, is the stuff of local legend with a prime position on the city’s bustling Ecclesall Road. In recent years, manager Michael Freeman has continued his father’s legacy by developing a new barbecue menu. Using a speciallyimported American offset smoker barbecue, Yankees delivers lip-smackingly good authentic American dishes. But it’s not just the food that lives up to expectations.Yankees is everything you would expect from an authentic American diner, with wood-panelled walls, ceiling fans, sports memorabilia and American football playing on the big screen. Despite visiting late on a Tuesday evening, the restaurant was packed to the rafters – a testament to Yankees’ reputation for tasty food and relaxed dining. To start, my companion tucked into a plate of nachos with layer upon layer of cheese, salsa, sour cream, guacamole, jalapeños and spicy beef chilli. I opted for the loaded potato skins, which were stuffed with cheese and bacon and moreishly scooped into a pot of sour cream and spring onion. Eager to test the barbecue menu that has made Yankees even more popular, my partner selected the ribs and pulled pork combo tray, which comes with coleslaw, pickles and fries. The barbecue menu includes ribs,
WESTSIDE 102
pulled pork, brisket, chicken and hot links all smoked in the Yankees oak fired barbecue pit, which gives the food a smoky taste. The ribs were deliciously tender and well marinated and the pulled pork – slow cooked for 20 hours – was full of flavour, cooked in a tasty sauce that is exclusive to Yankees. The restaurant even has its own homemade barbecue sauce that gave our chips a sweet, smoky taste. With a range of bottled beers to choose from, my companion opted for an allAmerican ‘bottle of Bud’ to wash down his meat feast. Meanwhile, I perused Yankees’ famous burger menu and settled on the Tex Mex burger, which packed a kick with its spicy blend of salsa, sour cream, guacamole and jalapeños.You can’t beat a good burger and fries and Yankees have 30-plus years of delivering the best. With hot dogs, sandwiches, wraps, pizza and fajitas also on the menu,Yankees has something for everyone and is proud to be a family-friendly venue. Despite being absolutely stuffed, we powered on with our American feast. The smell as a bowl of sugary doughnuts, covered in hot fudge sauce, hit the table instantly transported me back to childhood memories of summer fêtes and fairground rides. But it was the kiwi, mango and passion fruit pie that stole the show and the delicious, fruity dessert disappeared in minutes. If you’re after an authentic taste of the USA,Yankees is well worth a visit and they have a host of fantastic mid-week deals to take advantage of.

Oh dhal-ing! Has Chris Wilson found the key to a good curry?
T
here is no definitive recipe for dhal – a sublime, comforting lentil side dish that is a staple on every Indian restaurant menu. Sometimes it’s runny, sometimes it’s thick. If it’s good it normally means everything else on the menu will also be up to scratch. The version served up at Aligarh, the classy new Indian restaurant in Crosspool on the site formerly occupied by Richard Smith’s Artisan, is quite gloopy and pungent with the aromas of onions, coriander, green chillies and a variety of herbs and spices. It is delicious – and very, very buttery. So precisely how much butter goes into one serving? “I could tell you,” smiled our chatty waiter Ish. “But you probably wouldn’t order it again.” As I suspected, not a dish for the health police… but Ish has a portion every day at the start of his shift, with a squeeze of lemon juice and a couple of chapattis, and he’s looking well on it. If you have any other queries about the finer points of Aligarh’s extensive menu you can also ask the owner, Shoukat Ali.This is what you call a hands-on boss… he’s in the kitchen every afternoon at 4pm, helping the crew with food preparation for a couple of hours, before swapping chef’s whites for a collar and tie and reverting to front-of-house duties. The menu is pretty extensive and userfriendly with explanations of the food terminology, a heat rating that ranges from one to five chillies, and a guide for those who may have nut, egg, dairy or gluten issues. After crisp popadoms we shared a
WESTSIDE 104
seafood platter – a mix of cod, tilapia, seabass and king prawns. Everything was moist and piping hot; the seafood dips perked things up and the accompanying salad looked as pretty as a picture with orange slices and a sprinkling of pomegranate seeds. One of the most popular main courses since Aligarh opened last autumn has been the Nihari, and I can see why. This typical Lahorie dish, a lamb shank cooked with ginger, garlic, yoghurt, onions, tomatoes, herbs and spices, was falling-off-the-bone tender and I savoured every mouthful. Saffron lemon rice was a clean, sharp accompaniment. My companion’s Goan king prawn dish was marinated in lime juice with tamarind and garlic and cooked with green chillies, onions and coriander with a swirl of coconut milk to tone down the heat factor. The peshwari nan added a touch of sweetness and with its flamboyant topping of pistachios, sultanas, cherries and pineapple it looked rather spectacular. I admit, the cherries were a sweet step too far for my taste, but the texture of the bread was impeccable. We also shared that decadent dahl of course, and a bowl of bhindi bhaji (spicy okra). Desserts seem unnecessary to me in Indian restaurants but I make an exception for those that make their own kulfi and Aligarh’s version of this Indian take on icecream, rich with condensed milk and heavily scented with cardamom, was very refreshing. They also make their own salted lassi, and very good it was too. Along with some Indian beers to wash it down, this was a memorable meal in a nicely relaxed setting.

Everyone’s welcome Golfers of all ages and abilities are being encouraged to try Hillsborough Golf Club, one of the best courses in the region.
A
beautiful spring day, breathtaking scenery, and a sporting contest that friends of all ages and abilities can enjoy together… this is the delightful prospect that awaits members of Hillsborough Golf Club over the next few months. That sense of anticipation is being shared all over the country after a long, hard winter when only the most dedicated golfers (welllayered in protective clothing) took to their local courses. However, only a handful of golf courses are blessed with a stunning vista to match Hillsborough’s fabulous setting, 500ft above sea level with stunning views of the rolling countryside stretching out towards Bradfield. Hillsborough has a long-standing reputation for being one of the best golf
courses in the region, dating back to when it was founded in 1920. But alongside a proud tradition there is a modern approach to the game and a determination to embrace new members, especially women and juniors. If golf once had a reputation as being the pastime for gentlemen of “a certain age”, that era is long gone. As well as being one of the best and most beautiful courses around, Hillsborough is also extending the warmest of welcomes to those interested in swinging a club for the first time. This more modern approach is embraced by this year’s Club Captains, Richard Crisp and Christine Hall, who hope to encourage more ladies and juniors, both girls and boys, to make use of Hillsborough’s impressive course. Coaching is first rate at Hillsborough –

and you don’t need to shell out huge sums on new equipment before you first swing a club. Equipment is available to hire for beginners. Meanwhile, if any ladies and juniors who feel the urge to take up the game are feeling particularly nervous, Christine, Richard and fellow members are standing by to make them feel welcome. They can be paired up with a golf ‘buddy’ – an experienced player who will support them and help them improve and work towards gaining a handicap. On the social side, Hillsborough also has a lot to offer. Sunday lunches, open to all, are proving to be particularly popular. The clubhouse is also available for private functions, and there is a variety of entertainment in the evenings. As well as being a friendly club, with a thriving social scene, the Hillsborough course also presents a true sporting challenge for golfers of all abilities – but that does not make it unsuitable for beginners. “We have players of all abilities here, and the challenge is what makes it so enjoyable,” say Christine and Richard. Hillsborough Golf Club is a gem of a course, the perfect venue to be introduced to the sport and a great opportunity to make new friends with fellow learners who are at a similar stage of development. Introducing Max
Dealership expands
Eighteen-year-old singer songwriter Max – son of Vito from Rossi’s – was discovered by legendary Sheffield producer Elliot Kennedy (Steelworks Studio) and is set to release his debut single ‘Obvious’ on 3 May through Right Track / Universal Records. Taking cues from the Michael Bublé big band sound mixed with a healthy measure of Northern charm, Max is Sheffield’s most exciting and brightest rising star. The talented youngster has already worked with the likes of Peter Kay, Gary Barlow, Olly Murs, Donny Osmond and Geri Halliwell to name just a few. Find out more on his website – www.maxmusic.co.uk.

Everyone’s heard of the fashion weeks in London, Paris, Milan and New York. Lesser known however, is the furniture equivalent: The Stockholm Furniture Fair. Held in the Swedish capital, the annual trade show showcases the cutting edge in furniture and lighting design. “Stockholm is a must-visit in the furniture industry,” explains Toni of Nest.co.uk, who visited the fair. “It’s one of the biggest trade fairs in the world for Scandinavian furniture and Scandinavian manufacturers are some of our biggest-selling brands.” Founded in 2002, Nest.co.uk is fast carving out a reputation for itself as the place to go for high quality contemporary furniture. So what makes Scandinavian design so popular? “Most Scandinavian design has a simple minimalist style – it’s designed to be functional, not decorative so it fits into a lot of different spaces. Most traditional Scandinavian homes will contain a small number of furnishings; it’s about a few quality pieces that stand the test of time.” For more information visit www.nest.co.uk
Sheffield is fortunate to have the world’s only dealership owned by Mike Brewer, famed for his frank and honest insight on the motor industry and his internationally-renowned TV show Wheeler Dealers. Mike Brewer Motors, which opened on Bramall Lane in February 2013 on the site of the former Toyota retailer, quickly established a name for itself; and with ongoing success, continues to expand and flourish. They continue to create job opportunities, having recently increased their staff numbers in their administration, service reception, body repairs, PR and marketing departments. The company has also opened a brand new fully-equipped bodyshop and accident repair centre in Chesterfield with technicians armed with state-ofthe-art equipment, and are now completing full body repairs on vehicles that have been involved in accidents, as well as producing some fantastic fast, convenient and cost-effective chip and scratch repairs, small dent removal, bumper scuff repairs and alloy wheel refurbishments at excellent prices for drivers in South Yorkshire and North East Derbyshire. In addition, the modern eight-ramp service centre, situated on Bramall Lane with the showroom, now has the capacity to complete four-wheel laser alignment checks – and now offer this service free when you book an MOT, thus preventing the further unnecessary cost of replacing worn tyres so often caused by misalignment! Searching for Stars: Unwanted pet wanted to become hero support dogs Sheffield-based charity Support Dogs are searching for stars to help transform the lives of children and adults affected by autism, epilepsy and physical disabilities. This national charity is dedicated to training dogs to become specialist assistance dogs for adults and children with a range of challenging conditions. Danny Anderson, fundraising manager of Support Dogs, said: “These incredible dogs are taught how to help keep children affected by autism safe and able to enjoy a more active life. They are taught to give up to 50 minutes advanced warning of a seizure to someone affected by epilepsy. They can even learn skills such as loading and unloading washing machines, opening and closing doors and fetching named items to increase the independence of someone affected by a physical disability.” However, Support Dogs do not have their own breeding centre. The charity relies on recruiting dogs from a number of sources. This includes rescue centres and pet dogs that need to be rehomed. Support Dogs are asking anyone who has or knows of a pet dog that needs to be rehomed to consider contacting Support Dogs. Danny Anderson said: “We are currently These Royal Mail postboxes are available for looking for dogs aged between 10 months hire for weddings and parties. Think about the bees before mowing Troway Hall/Medibee, alongside Friends of The Earth, are campaigning for councils to stop mowing and encourage the flourishing of dandelions on verges, parks etc at this time of the year to give the newly awakening bees their first big source of nectar. Troway Hall has planted acres of wild flowers for the bees and they will be in full bloom in the next few months. Medibee, with everyone's help, gave £11.746.74 to The Sheffield Children's Hospital last year.

Shopping centre launches first ever kids vending machine Mums and dads visiting Meadowhall may no longer need to fear running out of baby and toddler essentials as the centre trialled a complimentary parent-friendly vending machine. As well as nappies and wipes, there were other goodies on hand including small toys, snacks and drinks. The trial was part of a wider parent-led initiative being adopted by Meadowhall after a parent’s survey and a series of focus groups fed back on what would make their life easier when out shopping with their children. As a result, the centre is also set to launch its own “Mini & Me Club” aimed at parents, child-minders and grandparents. The first club will officially meet on 1 May in the Oasis Dining Quarter with a breakfast get-together that covers baby and toddler first aid, with handson demonstrations. Each monthly breakfast, lasting around an hour, will have a guest speaker or theme. Other topics that will be covered in the forthcoming sessions include a sing and sign session and, over the summer, there will be organised buggy walks, a possible parent boot camp session, pop up back-to-school shops as well as kiddy crafts and meet n’ greets to swap stories with some of the region’s celebrity mums. Any carer can register to be part of the Mini & Me club via the Meadowhall website. Once registered you can collect your free membership card entitling you to exclusive offers and discounts and a welcome letter outlining what is coming up, dates, times and events to look forward to, which will be available to collect from Meadowhall Management Suite. Parents can also add in their own ideas and feedback via Tell Meadowhall at www.meadowhall.co.uk/tell_meadowhall.

Jordan Cutforth rounds up the latest motoring news. The thinking mans supercar The last generation Audi R8 was a huge success. This new version has some big shoes to fill. Based on the Lamborghini Huracan, the new Audi R8 will come in two flavours when it’s released in late 2015: the V10 and V10 Plus. The former obviously gets a V10 engine, this time packing 533hp. The latter also has a V10, but the Plus adds an extra 69hp, equating to a total output of 602hp – the most powerful production Audi ever. Both versions come with quattro allwheel drive with variable torque control, and all the latest Audi tech including the ‘virtual cockpit’ for the instruments. Plus, only a duelclutch transmission will be offered. No manual. The V10 will start from £119,500 and the V10 Plus from £137,500.
Porsche 911 GT3 RS – it’s back Porsche’s ultimate track-day monster has returned. Gone is the GT3’s 3.8-litre engine and in arrives a new 4.0-litre straight-six unit. Power has risen to 500hp making the 0-62mph sprint a blur at 3.3 seconds and the 0-124mph time takes 10.9 seconds. Only the PDK dual-clutch gearbox will be offered. Prices will start from £131,296 when they arrive in Porsche showrooms in May.
Who needs an SUV? Volkswagen has done to the Passat what they did to the Octavia: they’ve jacked-up the ride-height, added black body cladding as well as fitting permanent all-wheel drive. For sure it’ll tackle muddy terrain better than most SUVs and with the Passat’s mandatory estate body, it’ll be as practical, if not more so. There will be five engines available which range from 148hp to 217hp for the petrol engines and 148hp to 237hp for the diesels’. All engines will come with a stop-start system, the ability to recover energy lost whilst braking and battery regeneration.
New found sophistication? The eagerly anticipated new Ford Focus RS will be packing a new 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine under its bonnet, housing 316hp. To tame all these rampaging stallions, the power is delivered through – for the first time in a Focus – an all-new all-wheel drive system. A six-speed manual is the only option as well. The tell-tail signs of the Focus RS are the addition of a new, aggressive front bumper; side skirts; a projecting rear wing; a prominent rear diffuser; and two enormous gaping exhaust tailpipes. Even with all these alterations, it looks rather subdued compared to previous RS models that went before; there’s no bonnet bulges or flared wheel arches. It still looks menacing though. Due to go on sale in early 2016 costing around £30,000.
Continued improvement The Ford EcoSport has had a hard life since it was born last year by not quite being able to match its closest rivals for space and driving enjoyment. Ford have realised this and so they’ve created the ‘sportier’ EcoSport S. Available later on in the year, the EcoSport S will incorporate the new engineering tweaks of the normal model – 10mm drop in ride height, improved sound deadening, a reworked steering system and improved styling changes to the interior – but the S will add a new exterior colour named deep impact blue, a black roof, black mirror caps, a sporty rear diffuser and privacy glass. The EcoSport S will incorporate the same engines as the normal EcoSport. The diesel engines however gain an extra 5hp.

hile our four-legged companions are often referred to as man’s best friend, unfortunately they can’t help pick up the kids, get the grocery shopping or take us to work, which is why our cars are often our most prized possession – apologies pooches. Being so reliant on our cars means when something goes wrong, we need them fixing
as quickly as possible, by an expert who can be trusted. All seven staff at Sheffield Prestige, the Jaguar and Land Rover specialists are mastertechnicians and owner Matthew Quail has been in the motoring industry for 20 years and used to run a Jaguar garage. Sheffield Prestige opened in 2010 after Matt realised there was a gap in the market for an independent garage that could supply that allimportant specialist knowledge, without breaking the bank. He says their ethos is based on providing a high-quality but affordable service: “We are 60 per cent cheaper for service and repairs than the main dealers, and we do the same job, but better.” A service at their garage won’t affect your car’s three-year warranty either. The garage has built up a customer base of over 2,000 and offers a personalised service, where you can speak directly with
the technician who will be working on your car. Sheffield Prestige has also recently expanded and now sells used Jaguars and Land Rovers, which are handpicked, thoroughly checked and valeted prior to sale. Their master technicians carry out any work that needs doing with the latest diagnostic equipment and tools, so you can be sure to get a reliable motor at a respectable price. The option of partexchange is also available. They currently offer competitive prices for air conditioning services; a re-gas is £45 and a full service and repair is £75. Their secure, spacious workshop can be found just off Abbeydale Road. Sheffield Prestige Unit 9, Bryta Works, Little London Road, Sheffield, S8 0UJ Tel: 0114 221 9775
