SPRING CLEAN YOUR FINANCES Entering the new tax year is a great time to spring clean your finances. Here’s Hamnett Wealth Management’s suggested checklist: 1. Maximise your tax-free saving allowances If you’ve money to save, but haven’t used up your ISA allowance and are working, make sure you take advantage of this tax-free form of investment. Equally, ensure you’re making the most of allowances on your pension contributions to cut your tax bill. 2. Take control of your pension arrangements Whether you’re looking to set up a pension, save money on annual management charges or to reduce fees on expensive pension plans, review your current pension arrangements to see if they’re likely to help you achieve your retirement goals. 3. Review your investments Investment values have risen well in the last 12 months but volatility has been high. With fast changing political events affecting markets, it‘s imperative that your portfolio and pensions are strategically invested to profit from uncertainty and protect yourself from market shocks. 4. Plan for the future Safeguard against unexpected future events spoiling your final wishes by setting up a trust alongside your will. Trusts come in a variety of forms and can help lower potential inheritance tax bills as well as give extra guarantees that loved ones will be looked after.
Appoint a lasting power of attorney so loved ones can act in accordance with your best interests and wishes as they are now. There are two different lasting powers of attorney to consider – one to look after your health and the other your finances. 5. Question your current Adviser Do you know what they’re charging you in fees? Recent press reports have highlighted cases of people moving their portfolios and pensions from a certain provider because they have been subjected to high fees, poor service and a lack of transparency. Hamnett Wealth Management are Chartered Independent Financial Advisers who offer unbiased, expert financial planning advice and are working towards becoming a dementia friendly business. Jonathan Rowley, Director and Chartered Financial Planner, is also an associate member of SOLLA. SOLLA helps people and their families in finding trusted accredited financial advisers who understand financial needs in later life. We offer a free initial face-to-face consultation where we’ll assess your needs and explain how we can help. You’re always welcome to call into our office on Baslow Road, Totley or we can visit you in the comfort of your own home. Call us now on 0114 235 3500 or email us at advice@hamnettwealth.com

WHAT THE CLIENTS SAY: "I initially sought advice from a solicitor at a large family department in Sheffield, where I was advised I had no hope of obtaining a financial settlement. I was despondent and then a friend recommended I saw Michelle, thank goodness I did, I am now looking at six figure sum in financial settlement. Words cannot describe how grateful I am.” “Sandra must see the worst that one person can do and say to another once the love has died, and yet she remains constantly upbeat and positive. Her eye for detail ensures that she always has your best interests at heart in order to find a fair and equitable path for you. I was very glad that she was working with me rather than against me.” "I was concerned that due to the long length of my marriage and relative complexity of our finances, which combined personal and business assets on both sides, that I needed a solicitor with some experience of understanding and untangling personal and small business finance.”
NEW BEGINNINGS With buds appearing on the trees and tulips and daffodils bursting forth from their winter hibernation, Spring is nature’s time for new life and new beginnings. In theory, we all should be ‘full of the joys of Spring’ and yet, for many of us going through testing times in a relationship, the world can seem very bleak indeed and sometimes navigating a way through may seem impossible. That’s why getting the right advice and support from the outset makes a huge difference and allows you to control the situation rather than the situation controlling you.
“Michelle was very understanding and listened carefully to me as I explained my situation, she explained my options to me in a very clear way and explained what would happen depending on which option I chose. She came across straightaway as someone who had great knowledge of her job. I haven’t had any previous experience on getting divorced (thankfully) but the solicitor that my ex used was very slow and I got the impression it was just a job to them which made me so grateful that I had a firm that cared at what was a very emotional and stressful time for me. Michelle’s assistant jill Raine was also excellent, she kept me informed at every stage and nothing seemed too much trouble."
As a specialist family law firm, providing expertise in family law, with a formidable reputation for achieving the right outcome for our clients in cases of complex and high value cases and those including business and inheritance, our client satisfaction rate is exceptional.
"Thank you for your patience and willingness to see it through to the end. You managed to get me a settlement that for a long time I didn’t think would be possible-much appreciated.”
Many of our clients comment on our approachable support staff, unrivalled out of hours’ service and straightforward advice, which gives us the edge and enables us to guide and support you every step of the way. Realising that your marriage or relationship has ended can often be painful. However, we at Acclaimed Family Law can advise you of the best options for your individual circumstances, which may allow relationships to continue on an amicable, albeit different footing, thus enabling both parties to move forward with a spring in their step.

20 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
he team at Spencer is not only dedicated to making sure your current home is valued correctly, but also finding the right property for you – without any of the hard selling usually associated with this industry. “We have many, many contacts looking to buy or sell off-market,” says managing director Nicola Spencer, “And we offer complete discretion to our clients who may not wish to shout about their business.” Spencer specialise in five areas of property: residential sales, property management (rentals), block management, development design, and interior design, including show homes. Nicola Spencer has carved a name for herself in the industry and is well known by local developers and builders for her skills and abilities in valuation, off-plan pricing, and design, which she learned predominantly from her father, who worked in the Sheffield property market for 45 years. The development design service includes
T
discussions with developers in the initial planning stages and looking at layouts that are on-trend and fit in with the current market. The block management service involves managing the entire development and surrounding communal areas. “Our aim is to make sure vendors, developers and homeowners all get what they want from us, hence us offering services to cover all bases,” continues Nicola. “And because we are an independent business, we don’t have to answer to anyone, meaning we can tailor our services to suit our client’s needs.” Simply put, they are the go-to estate agent for new homes and property developments. Spencer are also excited to be working on valuations and plans for various other properties and sites for clients too. And they are always looking for more development work to sink their teeth into. standard at Spencer, as is proved by the steady stream of thank-you cards and testimonials. The team at Spencer is celebrating 25 successful years in the business with the help of a stunning new ad campaign. Nicola believes that a happy work force equates to many happy customers and implements a ‘zero-tolerance approach to negativity’ in her office. And, as a working mother, she understands that her female employees need flexible hours in order to balance their work with their family life. “We are proud to employ a number of strong, determined women,” adds Nicola. “The property world is still a male-dominated place, but it is possible to have a successful career and a family. “I think a lot of our competitors expected me to crumble and leave the business when I had my twins a couple of years ago, but if anything, I’m working harder than ever before and am loving every minute!” It all adds up to a complete package for a local independent business with strong roots in the area and a modern, dynamic approach that means Spencer, The Estate Agent is here to stay.

BACK IN BLOOM THIS YEAR’S RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW PROMISES TO BE A RIOT OF COLOUR AND EXOTIC BLOOMS. RACHEL MARTIN PREVIEWS WHAT’S IN STORE
Visitors will be able to try out an immersive 3D virtual reality experience
28 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
et in the magnificent 1,000-acre Chatsworth Estate, the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show, partnered by Wedgwood will return from 6 - 10 June with exciting new content, including a river of 12,000 Cosmos and more than 100 varieties of orchid. During Joseph Paxton’s time as head gardener the Chatsworth Estate boasted one of the most extensive orchid collections in the UK, and at this year’s show celebrity floral designer, Jonathan Moseley will join forces with Double H Nurseries to bring one of the UK’s largest orchid displays back to the estate. Housed within a bespoke representation of Joseph Paxton’s Great Conservatory, the display will feature over 100 varieties of the popular Phalaenopsis Orchid, creating an immersive floral extravaganza. The exotic blooms, in a sumptuous palette of lilacs, whites, purple, pale and cerise pink will adorn a central waterfall, and suspended from the ceiling will be a riot of sculptural branches, with large chandeliers dripping with mosses and tropical bromeliads from which will hang a further explosion of vibrant orchids. A Virtual Reality experience created by 3D expert and VR designer, Simon Mabey alongside Manchester Museum and Manchester University will immerse visitors further in the tropical display as they sit suspended amongst the flowers, experiencing the wonder of different orchids through the eyes of an insect. Moseley will also be at all the RHS shows with his British Flower Bus, where spectators can climb on board, see gorgeous British blooms and join him for demonstrations and free arrangement workshops using local grown flowers.

And for the first time at an RHS Show, a mass planting of over 12,000 Cosmos will create a striking vision of pink in front of the iconic Chatsworth House, for visitors to walk amongst and enjoy the sweet scent and beauty of this elegant summer flower. The important role plants play within cities will also be explored in the new Living Laboratory, showcasing some of the great ways plants can help both now and in the future as urban living intensifies. Plants and technology will be on display highlighting how different varieties can help address a number of urban challenges including pollution, flooding and food scarcity. Other show highlights include show gardens inspired by local landscapes, including The Great Outdoors Garden by Sheffield based designer Phil Hirst and a celebration of Hay Time in Yorkshire by Chris Myers. Continuing the agricultural theme, The John Deere Garden by Elspeth Stockwell and Jo Fairfax takes inspiration from farm buildings, ploughed wheat fields and natural woodland borders and will feature a circular sculpture of 100 tractors, celebrating the company’s centenary year of tractors. The history of Chatsworth House provides inspiration for some of the new innovative installations at this year’s show, and show partner, Wedgwood are working
with Chatsworth’s head of gardens and landscape Steve Porter and craftsman Carl Hardman of Landmark Walling to celebrate the ancient heritage craft of dry stone walling, an important feature in the British landscape. A ‘lost’ village that once stood in the shadow of Chatsworth House before being removed to make way for Capability Brown’s famous landscape is the inspiration behind Brewin Dolphin’s installation designed by multi award winning designer, Paul Hervey-Brookes. Liz Patterson, RHS Chatsworth Flower Show manager says: “We’ve been going all out in the Chatsworth team preparing some fabulous new experiences for the 2018 show. “On top of the exciting new content, the floral marquees will be bursting with top growers and nurseries and we have a fantastic line up of experts in the garden and artisan kitchen theatres hosting Q&A sessions, talks and demos throughout the week. “Visitors will also be able to get creative in the artisan craft area and we will see the return of the popular well dressing competition, plus lots more.”

RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW
Why I’m powered by flowers TOP FLORAL DESIGNER JONATHAN MOSELEY IS SET TO BRING A SPECTACULAR DISPLAY OF ORCHIDS TO RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW. HANNAH SANDERS FINDS OUT WHAT MAKES HIM TICK.
onathan Moseley has become one the UK’s leading floral designers while working as a florist for more than 26 years. After receiving a greenhouse for his eleventh birthday, Jonathan was destined for a life of gathering wild flowers, growing plants and entering horticultural shows. His passion lies with the world of flowers and he incorporates his love of nature into his designs. Taking centre stage at this years’ RHS Chatsworth Flower Show will be Jonathan’s display of thousands of beautiful orchids, giving visitors a chance to immerse themselves with an exotic and breath-taking world of mesmerising flowers. Here he talks about his career, signature style and the upcoming display at the RHS Flower Show.

What inspired you to become one of the UK’s leading floral designers?
Flowers are the most wonderful natural resource to work with – they have a transient beauty that requires specialist care and attention. Working with nature is hugely rewarding and I enjoy seeing the pleasure flowers give people - they make you smile and are one of the most easily obtainable pleasure fixes within this highly charged and ever challenging world. How did you develop your signature style?
Age and maturity gives you a confidence to relax into a style of designing that you feel comfortable with, and the experience to remain true and loyal to your design instincts. However in floral design you must constantly evolve to meet new challenges. I love large massed, naturalistic designs and for me it’s about allowing the flowers
RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW
Flowers are the most wonderful natural resource to work with – they have a transient beauty that requires specialist care and attention. You’re a British Flower Ambassador, why are you such a passionate advocate for British flowers?
British flowers possess a charm and a character that is sadly lacking within the majority of imported commercial blooms. For me, British flowers are synonymous with seasonality. We should support our UK flower farmers. I’m passionate and committed to seeing more varieties of cut flowers being grown here within the UK and ensuring that these precious blooms are easily available for florists to purchase. Collectively we are supporting our farmers, florists and keeping the local high streets alive and buoyant. Where do you look for inspiration?
The countryside, as Mother Nature is the greatest flower arranger and it’s to her whom I aspire, alongside my garden which is also an intoxicating palette of inspiration. I believe that to understand floristry you have to have a knowledge of the garden. The elixir of floristry is walking into the garden, gathering flowers and if you nurture your growing plants, understand their needs and how they grow that’s the biggest clue on how to arrange them. What is the biggest challenge facing the floral industry?
and foliage to have a voice. They are like people and are happiest when seated next to someone whose company they enjoy. Why did you choose to showcase orchids at Chatsworth Flower Show?
Orchids have a strong connection to Chatsworth as The Batchelor Duke was a keen plant collector, and along with his Head Gardener Sir Joseph Paxton he introduced more than 80 different species of orchids to Chatsworth, eventually becoming one of the most extensive collections in the country. It seems fitting that my installation will be
housed in a replica structure of Paxton's Great Pavilion, giving visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves within a fantastical world where orchids reign supreme. Sparking waterfalls, textured mosses, exotic bromeliads and a variety of exotic textured seed heads and branches will play host to a dazzling display of orchids. Phalaenopsis orchids will be prominent with over 4,000 plants being incorporated within the design, and they’ll be accompanied by exotic Vanda orchids, Miltonias, Oncidiums, Cymbidiums, and Dendrobiums.

As with many retail sectors floristry is under constant attack from the large scale multiple retailers. Flower prices have risen by over a third since Brexit, and they are seen as a luxury item, which are often the first to be cut during times of financial constraints. Florists have to be different and provide a service that is bespoke and tailored to the fashionable market place which is where the floristry industry sits. There is no room now for sellers of flowers and forward looking florists create a lifestyle product that is specialised, desired and unique. Finally, what would you say your favourite flower is?
My favourites are endless but I would have to say the humble snowdrop. I love how this simple innocent flower braves the depths of winter to reveal its pearly white pendulous head. They withstand frost and snow and herald the start of the garden reawakening. For me that is the impetus to start the creative journey as another floral year unfolds. HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?
Steve Porter, head gardener at Chatsworth House
TWO LEADING LOCAL GARDENERS ON THEIR PASSION FOR PLANTS AND HOW YOU CAN ENSURE YOUR PLOT LOOKS ITS BEST THIS SUMMER. ou might not feel like spending hours outdoors at the moment, but in order to have a healthy and thriving garden this summer preparations should start now - come rain or shine. Here we meet with one of Sheffield’s leading garden and landscape designers, Phil Hirst, and Chatsworth’s head gardener, Steve Porter, to discuss getting started in the gardening industry, inspiration and top tips and tricks for a stunning, colourful garden.
Y
STEVE PORTER How and when did you get started in the gardening industry?
Following a basic horticultural course near to home, I was very fortunate to land a place on the three-year National Trust Careership, based at Ickworth in Suffolk. It was a fantastic all-round introduction to working in historic gardens. I then went on and worked with the National Trust for 15 years, becoming their youngest head gardener in 2000. What attracted you to the gardening business?
WORDS: Hannah Sanders 32 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
I spent my early years growing up on a farm, and helping out with my grandad’s market garden, so it always seemed the right route to take. I particularly enjoy watching a plant, area or garden develop and grow. I’m
very much driven by raising gardening standards and providing enjoyment for visitors. What has been your career highlight?
Becoming Head Gardener in 2000 was great but taking over the garden and park at Chatsworth was amazing. I'm following in the footsteps of some amazing people, particularly Sir Joseph Paxton which is a great honour. What are your top gardening tips?
Getting off to a good start is important. Don't rush, prepare the ground and ensure all perennials and weeds are dealt with. You need to understand the soil - is it fertile enough or too rich, does drainage need improving or should you build irrigation? These considerations will all save hours later and minimise losses or frustration later.

RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW
Steves’ summer to do list for beginners Start with good hygiene – clearing weeds and summer leaf litter can help reduce disease. Regular dead-heading will extend your flowering season, feeding as soon as temperatures lift in the spring will help promote growth, flowering or fruiting depending on the type you use and watering when necessary is essential. For more information on Phil Hirst’s work visit www.philhirstgardens.co.uk or to keep up to date on the latest RHS Flower Show news visit www.rhs.org.uk
What are the main gardening jobs for June, July and August?
During these months a lot of time is devoted to regular maintenance such as weeding and dead-heading, however it's also a time to enjoy the garden and plan improvements. Look at borders to see what works as well as what doesn't. Where are there gaps? Where could you add bulbs? It’s well worth making notes or putting in labels so you remember what you’re looking at when it comes to splitting or planting time. What’s the best way to provide the right soil for your plants to thrive?
Understanding your garden, the soil and frost pockets is important and knowing what the plants require. Matching these together will make your life easier and your garden better. You can easily improve certain areas, such as adding organic matter to increase fertility and open up the structure, however changing the soil’s acidity to grow rhododendrons for example is much harder, slower and only worth considering if you are very keen and committed. What’s the best way to identify common pests?
Attacks, from rabbits, squirrels or even deer, are obvious as they chew stems, leaves and branches. Other things can be more difficult to identify and my best advice is to turn to a key in a pest and disease book or try searching online for the effects and how to deal with them.
‘I particularly enjoy watching a plant, area or garden develop and grow. I’m very much driven by raising gardening standards and providing enjoyment for visitors.’ 34 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
PHIL HIRST How did you get started in the gardening industry?
I’m a career changer who worked for more than 20 years as an accountant at the University of Sheffield. I had a passion for gardening which turned into a career ten years ago having trained part-time in garden design. What attracted you to the gardening business in South Yorkshire?
Gardening was my hobby and I wanted to work in a field that I loved and could utilise my creativity and passion. Sheffield has been my home for more than 30 years and I love the city and surrounding areas. How did you develop your signature style?
I like a mixture of the traditional and modern. Most clients are looking for a garden that is easy to maintain but looks stunning. The plants are very important in creating this, and I use a combination of planting and hard landscaping to give the gardens a relaxed feel and to ensure they look good throughout the year. I also blend hard landscaping materials to complement the planting. Tips for going eco-friendly?
Don’t try and make your garden pristine. Use lots of ground cover plants and plants which attract insects and pollinators which will ensure a good mix of wildlife in your garden, which in turn will help control pests and diseases. Tips for summer feeding and watering?
‘Don’t try and make your garden pristine. Use lots of ground cover plants and plants which attract insects and pollinators which will ensure a good mix of wildlife in your garden, which will help control pests and diseases.’
Plants in containers need to be fed with a slow release fertiliser at the start of the growing season and watered on a regular basis even if it’s been raining. Choose plants for the rest of the garden that will tolerate the conditions. If your soil dries out too quickly, go for plants that like dry conditions, whereas if your soils tends to stay wet, choose plants which prefer more moisture. Tips for a summer vegetable garden?
Successful sowing is important. Sow seeds a little and often for a constant supply of easy to grow crops such as salad and peas. It’s key to make sure everything remains well watered, and grow the things you enjoy to eat and are expensive to buy. What are the most stylish summer bulbs and when should you plant them?
Summer bulbs have become fashionable again and there is a huge variety which are easy to grow in containers of the garden border. My own favourites are dahlias which flower for months, coming in all sorts of shapes and sizes. I prefer the smaller, simpler flowered varieties such as ‘Bishops of Auckland’, ‘Twinings After Eight’ and the species Dahlia Merkii.
Phil’s summer to-do list for beginners Start small and don’t be too ambitious. Concentrate on a small area of your garden so that you’re not overwhelmed by it and as you gain in confidence expand outwards. Try growing hardy flowering annuals from seed as a simple way to get started. These can be sown straight into the ground where they will flower - a packet of seed is cheap and will go a long way and give you quick results.

Hoyland Dismantling started out in demolition, dismantling and reclamation, but as time has progressed, so has the business and now they source and supply materials to trade and the general public. Good quality reclaimed materials have become increasingly hard to source, and they have looked down new avenues. This has led to them supplying a lot of new materials, so more than 75 per cent of what they sell is new. They source products not just in the UK, but from all over the world, and are constantly looking at new products and suppliers to ensure they can offer a wide range of good quality products at very competitive prices.

MAKE A WILL AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE
St Luke’s Hospice Lottery is back… with a £15,000 rollover St Luke’s Hospice is relaunching its lottery – and that means even more chances for you to enjoy some great cash prizes while supporting Sheffield’s only hospice. And with an amazing rollover jackpot of up to £15,000 and more than 100 guaranteed prizes every week – including the £1,000 top prize, a £100 second prize and 100 £5 winners – there are even more reasons to play. It costs just £1 to play and the chances of winning are much higher than other lotteries, with one in three players bagging a prize each year. By joining, you’ll be supporting St Luke’s as the money raised funds the care of one in nine patients. Joining is easier than ever and can be done online by visiting www.stlukeslotterysheffield.org.uk – paying either by direct debit or credit card – or by completing the form in the St Luke’s lottery leaflet available in all St Luke’s shops across the city, at St Luke’s main reception in Little Common Lane and other venues in the city centre.
St Luke’s Hospice is joining forces with some of Sheffield’s leading law firms to encourage people to make a will – and boost funds for hospice care. Now in its eighth successful year, St Luke’s Will Month is a partnership between the hospice and 13 top city solicitors, running for a strictly limited period throughout the whole of April. Participating firms include Banner Jones, Bell and Buxton, Best Solicitors, Graysons, hlw Keeble Hawson, Norrie Waite and Slater, Taylor Bracewell, Taylor and Emmet, Coates, Foys, PM Property Lawyers, Wosskow Brown and Rosalind Watchorn. The idea is simple – the participating solicitor of your choice draws up a basic will in return for a donation to St Luke’s. To find out more about Will Month call the St Luke’s Will Month hotline 0114 235 7551 or email info@hospicesheffield.co.uk or visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk
Sheffield mums raise almost £100,000 for top city charities
Saxton Mee to sponsor Enchanted Winter Ball Saxton Mee has been confirmed as the headline sponsor of the 2018 St Luke’s Hospice Enchanted Winter Ball. The popular event on 24 November will be held at the Ponds Forge International Hall and hosted by BBC Look North presenter and St Luke’s patron Harry Gration. Along with a luxury dinner and entertainment, the evening will also include a charity auction. “Our aim is to raise vital funds to ensure St Luke’s can continue to support the people of Sheffield affected by terminal illness,” said St Luke’s director of income generation Kathryn Burkitt. “Our ball would be perfect as a seasonal celebration to bring friends, colleagues and clients together. Saxton Mee director Linda Crapper commented: “We are so proud to support such a fantastic charity, one that helps all the people of Sheffield, looking after the people we love and care for most.” To make a booking visit www.enchantedwinter.co.uk 58 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
Mum’s the word for the Sheffield charity supporters who have raised almost £100,000 for some of the city’s favourite organisations. Sheffield Mums Against Cancer is the group headed by Ceri Rogers and friends which raises cash for charities including St Luke’s Hospice and Weston Park Hospital. Their Big Sparkly Fundraiser at Baldwin’s Omega raised almost £20,000 in one glamorous night that included an auction where items up for grabs included signed Antony Joshua boxing gloves and shorts and a Liam Gallagher solo album and signed print. The event means that the group has now raised more than £97,000 for charities in just five years. “This is a truly extraordinary achievement,” said St Luke’s community fundraising manager Megan Senior. “Ceri and her tireless group of friends are an outstanding example of fundraising at its finest and the work they do really does make an enormous difference to the lives of so many Sheffield people.”

Hope is Strong fundraising dinner raises over £46,000 Over 170 business leaders and individuals from across the city region came together to support Museums Sheffield at a spectacular fundraising dinner held at the Millennium Gallery. Hosted by BBC Radio Sheffield’s Paulette Edwards and sponsored by law firm CMS, the
event raised over £46,000 to support the charity’s vital work across the city. The fundraising event, held on International Women’s Day, was inspired by the Hope is Strong exhibition currently on show at Millennium Gallery – part of Museums Sheffield’s season to mark the centenary of the
Representation of the People’s Act which saw 8.5 million women in the UK gain the right to vote for the very first time. All the money raised will support Museums Sheffield work to care for the city’s historic collections and ensure that art and heritage is accessible to everyone.

CHATSWORTH HORSE TRIALS
TRIAL RUN SOME OF THE WORLD’S BEST THREE-DAY EVENTERS ARE HEADING FOR CHATSWORTH. ISABELLE OSBORNE PREVIEWS WHAT’S IN STORE. his month sees the return of the Dodson & Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials. Hosted at Chatsworth in the heart of the Peak District and preparations for this exhilarating three-day equestrian event are well underway. Taking place from 11 to 13 May, it is hoped the spring event will bring the warm weather and blooming flowers the season is known for. Chatsworth House and its 105-acre gardens is surrounded by stunning landscapes of natural beauty, so the location could not be more perfect. Chatsworth is home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and the couple are renowned for their love of horses. The Duke has served as chairman of Ascot for over a decade and the Duchess owns many prize-winning animals. After an incredibly successful showcase last year, Chatsworth is ready to once again welcome worldclass competitors and the equestrian stars of the future. A guide to eventing There are three disciplines of equestrian eventing. Successful horses will demonstrate skill, obedience and control across their events, with the least amount of penalties. Cross Country: This test of endurance is considered the most entertaining event. The horse’s speed and jumping ability are crucial in succeeding in cross country, as well as testing the rider's knowledge of the horse’s pace and their ability to control the horse across the course. Show-jumping: A relatively new sport, athleticism is a vital skill for successful show-jumping, with penalties given for horse disobedience, knocking off the poles and failing to the complete the course in its order. This event will take place in the Chatsworth Arena over the weekend. Dressage: Whilst many believe this is the easiest and perhaps most tedious of the events, dressage should not be underestimated; it takes immense skill, strict control and years of training and experience on both the horse’s and the rider’s behalf. Known as ‘horse ballet’ and ‘art’, points are awarded for grace and fluidity throughout the routine. Its purpose is to develop the horse’s athletic ability and willingness to perform.

International Horse Trials, had another successful weekend with first and second places while Britain’s Gemma Tattersall rode into the record books as the first female winner of an Event Rider Masters (ERM) competition. This year, watch the Pony Club Mounted Games on the Sunday. Begun 40 years ago by the Duke of Edinburgh, they require courage and skill – a great show for all. Visitors are also encouraged to bring their canine friends along to try their paws at the Family Dog Racing, testing their agility under expert guidance and providing an enjoyable event for spectators. The award categories will include Most Handsome Dog, Best Veteran and Best in Show. In addition, Paws for Thought, led by ex-police dog handler Stuart Brace, will be providing entertainment – not forgetting the appearance of the country’s most lovable ‘Rescue Bears’ from the National Newfoundland Display Team. New Zealand’s Richard Savory Bettina Hoy and his presenters, Stuart and Warren, will also educate and amaze the crowds with their fantastic sheep display. The fun continues with a vibrant circus skills workshop for the whole family, plus face painting, pottery painting and a giant bouncy castle. Venture into the shopping village and browse 100 trade stands, explore the gardens, or indulge in culinary delights throughout your visit. This year’s event will also be supporting CHICKS, a national children's charity providing free respite breaks to disadvantaged children from all over the UK. With all this and more, the Chatsworth Horse Trials is not to be missed. Book before 6 May and receive a 15 per cent discount.

Bigger and better … of course! FORMER OLYMPIC HORSEMAN IAN STARK TELLS PHOEBE SEYMOUR WHY HE IS LOOKING FOWARD TO THIS YEAR’S CHATSWORTH HORSE TRIALS. nternational three-day event course designer Ian Stark has been involved with the Dodson & Horrell Chatsworth International Horse Trials for over 11 years. course though. We’re very spoilt - I get to stay in the house during the competition. Which event are you most looking forward to at this year’s horse trials?
I always like the CIC three star class. It’s the highest international level at Chatsworth. What’s new this year?
We’re trying to get more and more interest and involvement for families and kids. It’s important because sometimes there’s one or two members of a family that are interested in horses, and the rest of the family aren’t, so I think it’s important that we put on something to encourage them to come and enjoy Chatsworth. It’s such a beautiful setting, and even if you’re not interested in horses, Derbyshire has some of the best countryside in the world. Which rider are you looking forward to seeing?
To be honest, I haven’t seen any entries yet, but any of the top riders - it’s always exciting to watch them. If I have any time throughout the weekend, I also like to go into the commentary box and do a bit of commentating. Do people ever ask for your autograph?
I still get that and it kind of surprises me because I’m an old codger now. But I think the thing that amazes me the most is

Ian during his competition days
when I walk around London and people recognise me. What do you think the horse trials bring to the area?
First and foremost, it brings the high-level competition into Derbyshire, which is brilliant. It also brings a lot of people, including people from different countries who come and stay, so it brings a lot of economy into Derbyshire. Why should people come out to see the horse trials?
‘I love coming up with new ideas and new combinations, and challenging the riders.’
I think they should come because it is the most beautiful setting, it’s a lovely park and you can sit and have a picnic in the countryside in front of the big house and watch a top-class competition. There’s not many places as beautiful as this to watch top-level competitors in their sport, and the talent is exceptional at Chatsworth. There’s so much lovely terrain, it’s quite thrilling. As well as the thrills and spills, there might be a rider taken out in the water jump as long as nobody’s injured, people quite like it. It is brilliantly run and organised. People can come and really enjoy the atmosphere, whether they’re horsey or not. We cater for everybody and families can get involved in other things such as face painting and the mini farms.

The smart choice PAUL AND SUE WANTED TO DOWNSIZE WHEN THEY RETIRED… AND ARBOR LIVING OFFERED WAS THE IDEAL LIFESTYLE OPTION. rbor Living, which has two luxury residential park home developments in Lincoln and Lymm, offers a different lifestyle choice for single occupants and couples alike, allowing them to downsize and release equity without compromising on high standards of living. Each single-storey home is contemporary and fully furnished. In many cases over 55s are still living in a substantial family home where they raised their children, but subsequently, that property has become a time consuming and costly asset to maintain. Two people who jumped at the opportunity to downsize, are retired RAF navigator Paul and his wife, retired teacher, Sue Taylor. The couple were looking to downsize from their four-bed family home, with the plan of moving into a bungalow. Options were limited, until they found Arbor Living’s Lakeshore development in Lincoln.

Paul said: “My wife and I decided we wanted to downsize from our large three storey house because it became too much work to maintain and we wanted to enjoy our retirement. An Arbor Living park home seemed like the perfect solution. “We are very impressed with our new home and its interior design. Our new park home suits our minimalist taste and it feels stylish and luxurious with all the fixtures we require. We also love that there’s a strong sense of community here, which is lovely and it’s great to meet other likeminded individuals who are enjoying their retirement or semi-retirement. “Arbor Living offers a smart solution for retirees or semi-retirees who are looking for luxurious single-story living. Sue and I are delighted with our new lifestyle.” For further information, please visit ArborLiving.co.uk or contact Winkworth estate agents on 01522 531 321.

of master craftsmen to withstand years of wear. The shoes are hand-stitched and fitted with a special cork layer beneath the innersole, which allows feet to breathe. As one of Sheffield’s longest standing shoe shops, their extensive range means they can provide high quality footwear for any occasion including country fairs, corporate events and everyday wear. It is the team’s meticulous eye for detail and passion for craftsmanship that has helped them to cultivate a loyal clientele.

here’s no point stepping out onto the street in a sharp suit, only to finish it off with a cheap pair of shoes bulging at the sides and splitting at the seams. Very few items possess the same sartorial power that shoes do. Unlike other accessories such as cufflinks or a tie, a great pair of shoes completes an outfit, pulls the whole look together, and should take pride and place in every man’s wardrobe. And it’s shoes – handsome, comfortable and durable men’s shoes – that are the ‘sole’ of Charles Brooks’ business. Charles Brooks isn’t your average shoe shop, with the first store opening in 1972, the team’s passion, knowledge and expertise have been a constant throughout the years, meaning they deliver the best, most honest advice to each individual customer. As well-heeled gentleman themselves, the team understands that great shoes are worth investing in, so only the finest handmade footwear occupies the shelves of the Fulwood Road store. Loake, Barker and Tricker’s are among this select group of specialist designers, all of whom are committed to using traditional time-honoured English skills in their shoemaking. There are some 200 operations involved in the making of just one pair of Loake Goodyear Welted shoes, most of which are carried out by highly-skilled craftsmen. Likewise, shoes by Tricker’s and Barker, who produce more than 200,000 land-lasted sewn pairs a year, are carefully made by a team

HANDS ON EXPERIENCE FOR STUDENTS AT COOKERY MASTERCLASS. CSE cookery students from Sheffield High School for Girls stepped outside the classroom for real life experience with three professionals in a cookery master class. The 13 pupils, who are the first to study GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition at Sheffield Girls’ Senior School, rolled up their sleeves to join in workshops with Waitrose butcher and fishmonger John Barker and former alumna, now baker at BakesbyButter, Lizzie Schofield. They were also given an insight into working in a professional kitchen by Leslie Buddington, head chef at awardwinning Sheffield restaurant Brocco on the Park. The session was hosted by Harriet Coulthard of family-run bespoke kitchen making company My Fathers Heart at their Broadfield Court showroom. Helen Simpson, Sheffield Girl’s cookery and nutrition teacher, said: “The aim of the day was to provide the students with the expert skills that they need to achieve the top grades in their qualification. “You cannot beat hands on experience
G
from professionals away from the classroom to translate text book information into practical skills.” John Barker showed the students how to fillet and bone mackerel, dover sole and chicken while Lizzie Schofield gave a baking workshop on best techniques followed by tips on presentation and plating from Leslie Buddington. Student Issy Edwards said: “I have developed skills which I can use for the rest of my life and most of all I can cook so many wonderful dishes! It isn’t all written work - we do vast amounts of cooking and it never gets boring. Fellow student Jess Mowthorpe added: “I have learnt so much already and hope to take the skills I have learnt in the course, into a career in the food industry. “There is such a great atmosphere in the kitchen when we are cooking, and we make a huge variety of meals, we can also alter what we are cooking to fit our likes and dislikes and can express our creativity within these dishes. “I personally really enjoy the practical lessons, because they are so much fun and in a low pressure situation and you can really be yourself.”

Bradie Pell
Valued family often forgotten WHAT RIGHTS DO YOU HAVE AS GRANDPARENTS WHEN YOUR CHILDREN DIVORCE OR SEPARATE? GRAYSONS SOLICITORS’ BRADIE PELL TAKES A CLOSER LOOK. hen a relationship breaks down, it’s often not only the parents and children who suffer, but grandparents too. Sadly, an estimated one million grandparents in the UK report that they do not see their grandchildren due to a family feud, bereavement or, in some instances, for no apparent reason at all. This is particularly sad as we all know that grandparents play a vital role in the upbringing of their grandchildren, providing more and more child care, particularly as parents struggle with work-life balance. Reports show that 97 per cent of parents get some kind of help, whether it be grandparents looking after the children whilst parents work or picking the children up from school. In fact, grandparent childminders have increased by 49 per cent since 2009 and, on average, spend nine hours a week looking after grandchildren. Ninety-nine percent of grandparent childminders are unpaid. Unfortunately, grandparents don’t have an automatic right to contact with their grandchildren, and it’s not against the law for a parent to refuse that contact. Losing contact with your grandchildren can be extremely painful, and you may think that there is nothing you can do to see them again, but there are remedies available to grandparents. You could try mediation – it can be a
W
84 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
useful tool when it comes to settling issues outside of court. Mediation is designed to resolve matters amicably without using litigation. Family disputes can often become heated, with no clear resolution, and the involvement of a third-party mediator can help to take the heat out, providing control and facilitating good discussions and agreements from an objective standpoint. If needed, you can also obtain legal advice alongside mediation. The courts are, however, mindful of the fact that sometimes an agreement cannot be reached using mediation. If it is either deemed unsuitable or the mediation has broken down, as a grandparent you can apply to the court for an order that sets out arrangements for contact with your grandchild, but you must first have the court’s permission to make the application and you must have attempted mediation before starting it. When deciding whether to give you, as a grandparent, permission to make the application, the court will take into account various factors, including your connection with the child and the risk of disruption to its life. Permission from the court to make the application does not mean that your application for a child arrangements order itself will be successful. You will need to
persuade the court that you have a meaningful and on-going relationship with your grandchild that benefits their lives and is in the child’s best interests, including whether the order will have a negative impact on other family relationships. Like you, a court will always treat a child’s ‘best interests’ as paramount when making its decisions. Graysons has a wealth of experience in dealing with issues relating to grandparents and grandchildren, so if you are a grandparent and need advice or assistance on a matter relating to your grandchildren, please contact our family law experts now. We can arrange a free of charge meeting in which we can discuss your case and advise what your next step should be. We’re asking head chefs and restaurateurs to tell us about any bright sparks working in their kitchens, who they think are shaping up to be outstanding chefs of the future. Entries have already started coming in and there’s still time but hurry... the closing date of Monday April 23 is approaching fast. Our competition is open to anyone working in restaurants in the Sheffield and North Derbyshire region, and all entries must be under the age of 25 on 1 June 2018. Four finalists will be invited to join us for a MasterChef-style cooking competition in the state-of-the-art kitchens at My Fathers Heart on Saturday 12 May. That’s their opportunity to create their signature main course, which will be judged by a panel of culinary experts led by Mick Burke, who spent 37 years teaching thousands of students the fine art of cooking in his role as senior chef lecturer at Sheffield College. And, as an extra incentive, all four finalists will also be invited to take part in the 2019 Sheffield Food Festival’s popular ‘Ready, Steady, Cook’ competition. My Fathers Heart, designers and makers of the region’s finest bespoke, handmade kitchens, bedrooms and furniture, regularly host glamorous events in their award-winning showroom. It proved to be the perfect venue for last year’s Young Chef of the Year event. The Westside/My Fathers Heart Young Chef of the Year competition is a great opportunity to shine a light on the next generation of kitchen superstars. We’re looking forward to seeing what the best young talent out there has to offer, and giving all four finalists, a boost by placing them in the spotlight. The results will be announced at the Westside Restaurant Awards on Monday 4 June.

A place in the sun A MUCH-LOVED DESTINATION FOR ALL LEVELS OF RIDER, MALLORCA NOW HAS A VERY SHEFFIELD CYCLING CONNECTION. angsett Cycles is one of the oldest cycle shops in the country, and recently they embarked on an exciting new venture in the sun with Mallorca Bike Hire. A family-run business established way back in 1890, Langsett Cycles has been an integral part of the cycling community in the Yorkshire/Derbyshire areas for years, but it’s now spreading its vast knowledge and professionalism to the beautiful island of Mallorca. Langsett Cycles really is a one-stop-shop for everything cycling. Their large landmark store on Infirmary Road houses all the latest road, mountain, city and children’s bikes with all the associated accessories and clothing to match. The workshop has been awarded the status of Shimano service centre and is fully equipped to carry out any repair by cytechtrained mechanics all at affordable prices. “After visiting Mallorca on a cycling holiday in my youth I instantly fell in love with the island and for years I’ve enjoyed running a popular cycling holiday from Langsett’s to the island. I always had the dream of having a home or a business there so with Mallorca Bike Hire I now have both. “Although hard work, I really am living the

dream and split my time between my business in Sheffield and Mallorca and look forward to coming home to Sheffield just as much as going back out to Mallorca, my son Alex however prefers the sun and runs business in Mallorca all year round,” said owner Andrew Elston. There’s a reason Mallorca is regarded as the greatest place on earth to cycle – quiet, high quality roads with challenging ascents and exhilarating descents, spectacular scenery with beautiful villages, cafes, and of course cake, it’s not too dissimilar to the Peak District. But with over 300 sunny days a year, maybe a bit warmer. As a result, Mallorca is the playground to most of the world’s greatest professional cycling teams including the all-conquering Team Sky, and Bradley Wiggins is often spotted as he has a home just around the corner from the store. Based in beautiful Puerto Pollensa in the north of the island, Mallorca Bike Hire offer the best quality carbon bikes and deliver them directly to your accommodation. Stocking bikes from top brands like Cannondale, Ridley and Orbea, each bike is prepared, serviced and set up to the customers own specification meaning you can
take the stress, worry and cost out of taking your own bike and hire one that’s set up just like your own. And they don’t just hire out first-class road bikes. They now have an extensive selection of e-bikes, city and children’s bikes, so the whole family can enjoy an active trip away in the sun. As the hire business in Mallorca is proving so popular, Andrew and his team are offering a bike hire service at Langsett Cycles. The latest electric e-bikes are a real game changer – particularly in a city with seven hills. Whether you’re a beginner or skilled cyclist, you can enjoy the breath-taking views of the city or Peak District on a high quality hire bike provided by a reputable company, and of course, there’s new models to purchase once you’re hooked. CLASSICAL MUSIC FANS IN FOR A TREAT AS WORLD STARS HEAD FOR SHEFFIELD CITY HALL. heffield International Concert Season returns this September to Sheffield City Hall, which sees a line-up of the world’s finest conductors, soloists and ensembles visiting the city for 13 unmissable concerts. Some of the names set to appear on the famous Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall stage include Sir Mark Elder, Jennifer Pike, Francesca Dego, Nikolai Demidenko, Chloe Hanslip and many more. Sheffield International Concert Season can trace its roots all the way back to 1935. Manchester’s world-famous Hallé orchestra and Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, Sheffield City Hall’s Orchestra and Choir in Residence since those early years, still play a starring role in many of the season’s highlights. The season opens on 5 October as Laura van der Heijden joins Karl-Heinz Steffens and the Hallé for Dvǒrák’s iconic Cello Concerto. Visits by the Russian State Symphony Orchestra and Czech National Symphony Orchestra follow, bringing two of Europe’s finest ensembles to the City. In December Sheffield Philharmonic
S
Chorus reunite with the celebrated Black Dyke Band for their annual City Hall Christmas Concerts. Hosted by returning presenter, BBC Radio 3’s Petroc Trelawney, these atmospheric yuletide affairs have become a staple fixture in Sheffield’s seasonal calendar, bringing families together for a rousing and heart-warming Christmas singalong. In February, the London Mozart Players perform a special concert celebrating their 70th birthday, led as ever by the inimitable Howard Shelley, kick-starting a series of four concerts featuring Mozart concertos. Along with the following concerts from the Hallé and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, this marks a great opportunity to experience music from the mind of the great composer interpreted by different talents in the space of a couple of months. Another highlight sees the Royal Northern
Sinfonia and Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus team up in April for Bach’s remarkable, dramatic Mass in B Minor, followed in May by a tantalising all-Russian programme from the Russian Philharmonic of Novosibirsk. Concerts at Sheffield City Hall are always a special occasion; each performance is preceded by a pre-concert talk offering a fascinating glimpse behind the scenes with one of the performers and the historic oakpanelled City Bar offers the perfect location to start the evening. To buy tickets or find out more about Sheffield International Concert Season, visit www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk, call 0114 2 789 789 or visit the Sheffield City Hall Box Office in person.

EATING OUT
It’s time for tea RACHEL MARTIN ENJOYS A LUXURIOUS AFTERNOON OF INDULGENCE AT EAST LODGE. ther than a traditional cuppa, afternoon tea is something of an alien concept to my partner; finger sandwiches on multi-tiered stands are one of those indulgences usually reserved for ladies who lunch, or the moneyed set who discuss the local gossip in period dramas. So when the chance to try it out was on offer at East Lodge – one of the closest hotels to Chatsworth House, I jumped at the opportunity. And the fact it also gave me a chance to nosy around the 105-acre estate was an added bonus. There is certainly something quite special about East Lodge. Steeped in history, it was originally the hunting lodge to nearby Haddon Hall, and inside, a delightfully comfortable ambience carries that depth of quality associated with only the very best of country house hotels and restaurants. The conservatory offers a comfy mix of seats and sofas, and intimate nooks in which to unwind – perhaps the most ideal spot for quiet conversation – and on arrival, my partner and I were shown to a picturesque window table where we watched the world go by. Shallow saucers of delicate Darjeeling tea were poured with a flick of the wrist, to make the most of the aromas, and every element of our experience was a joy, starting with a high point – home-smoked Scottish salmon precision-cut sandwiches.

I could spend this entire article waxing lyrical about how the symphony of flavour played out on my tastebuds, but your eyes would glaze over. So suffice to say it was good. Very good. As was the Peak District baked ham, cucumber, and free range egg and cress mayonnaise. To the delicate question of what should be applied first to the deliciously plump scone – clotted cream, farmhouse butter or strawberry jam – came our waitresses’ impeccably diplomatic answer: “There is no one way to eat your scone. It is a matter of taste.” So, for reasons of structural integrity, the winner was Devon (jam-on-cream), allowing the sweet strawberry flavour to shine through and providing a counterpoint to all that emulsion. I haven't mentioned butter? Well, no, because I assume the idea of buttering your scone first is an urban myth. The eye-popping top tier was the one we had our gaze fixed upon since its arrival; the picturesque offering of assorted sweet treats as light as the ivory-tinkling over the airwaves. This was a plate of fancies all made in the East Lodge kitchen: light and delicate lemon mouse enveloped by tangy and fresh tropical fruit, fragrant fruit cake, prettily presented carrot cake and a light Genoese sponge covered in golden marzipan. We savoured every mouthful, in between more tea of course, but the pièce de résistance was the carrot cake, which looked almost too
good to eat… almost. With an unsurpassed reputation for class, afternoon tea at East Lodge is a timeless and substantial affair. Although as much as he loved the idea, I can’t see my partner creating a trend for (gentle)men who lunch over cucumber sandwiches and fancy cakes. Nonetheless, we certainly wouldn’t need to think twice about repeating the experience – it’s not just a wonderful first impression East Lodge’s afternoon tea makes, it’s a lasting one.

ECCLESALL ROAD LOST A MUCH LOVED VENUE EARLIER THIS YEAR, BUT THE OWLERTON BRANCH IS VERY MUCH STILL IN THE GAME, WRITES CHRIS WILSON. t came as quite a shock when Napoleons on Ecclesall Road, Sheffield closed its doors at such short notice earlier this year. After all, it had been at the heart of the city’s nightlife scene for so many people for so long, whether they were hitting the gaming floor, dining, or just popping in for a late drink. If you’re one of those feeling withdrawal symptoms, it is worth remembering that the Napoleons name is still represented in Sheffield thanks to the Owlerton branch, which runs very much along the same lines and will be instantly familiar to anyone who remembers the Golden Mile venue with fondness. This extends to the ‘dine in style’ offers that have always made the Napoleons restaurant one of the best value high-end eating experiences in Sheffield. It’s still a deal that is hard to beat with three courses, a drink at the bar and a £5 gaming chip for the all-in price of £23 per person (£26 on Saturday). A major facelift a few years ago brought this busy venue up to scratch, and a recent refurb means it retains that ‘box-fresh’ appeal with a luxurious deep red carpet and gold

seat trimmings in the restaurant, bar and lounge areas. The lounge was a perfect place for us to read a menu that changes every two months and is liberally studded with crowd-pleasing classics. For starters pulled aromatic lamb with hoisin sauce, warm Chinese pancakes, spring onion and cucumber was a delicious take on the much loved Chinese restaurant favourite crispy duck, and grilled goat’s cheese with roasted beetroot and tomato salad with walnut dressing kept the flavour and contentment levels high. A delicate, floral bottle of Pinot Grigio (£17.95) helped ease us gently in the direction of two splendid main courses. Chicken breast, with a lovely crispy skin and a shard of pancetta, was served on a bed of super-smooth, creamy asparagus risotto. With a sharp basil and tomato pesto to cut through the richness, this was one of the nicest main courses I’ve tasted in a long time. Our second main delivered gloriously tender roasted lamb rump, served pink as requested, with garlic baked gnocchi, creamed peas with mint. A shared selection of seasonal vegetables completed the picture. For dessert we shared a very fine double chocolate trifle spiked with Bailey’s that was
rich, decadent and decidedly boozy, before ending our meal on savoury note with a selection of cheeses with celery, fruit and biscuits (£1.50 supplement). That’s the end of the meal but not necessarily the story, because of course only a few panes of frosted glass separate the restaurant from the gaming tables. We pooled our chips and settled down to clean up on the roulette tables. It didn’t quite work out that way, but if you prefer a sure thing, stick to the restaurant. Front runner CHRIS WILSON INVESTIGATES AN INDIAN RESTAURANT THAT IS ONE OF SHEFFIELD’S BEST-KEPT SECRETS. don’t often feel moved to use the f word while talking about any restaurant but it has to be said...The Front Room is all about finesse. It’s not so much the white tablecloths and candelabra on every table, or the black bow ties, waistcoats and white shirts worn by the attentive waiters, although these elements do create a striking first impression, and make us aware that somebody is trying hard to set this striking North Sheffield venue apart from your average Sheffield curry house. The truth is, if they wore jeans and t-shirts and served food on paper plates, I’d still be drooling about the dazzlingly dextrous cooking taking place in a restaurant that, perhaps because it is in Hillsborough rather than one of the city’s restaurant hot spots, has been flying slightly under the radar for a few years. But word is spreading and it’s the exceptional food that is creating a loyal clientele from all over Sheffield and beyond. There are dishes on The Front Room’s menu that you don’t find every day; starters such as wild basil chicken tikka, squid pakoras, and spinach rolls coated in black and white sesame seeds served with a red tamarind dipping sauce. And with mains including scallops served in the half shell, this is the perfect opportunity to try something different.
I
Having said that, our meal started in the classic style with crunchy poppadoms (1.50 for two) and the assorted pickle tray (£1.70 for two), with a delicious jug of delicious freshly made salty lassi (£5.25) to wash it down. Three starters between two may seem a trifle excessive but when you can’t decide it’s the only option. Those aforementioned spinach rolls (£4.25) looked and tasted terrific, and the dipping sauce had a splendidly sharp kick. The mixed vegetable appetizer (£4.95) with tandoori stuffed mushroom, Punjabi samosa and onion bhaji kept up the high standards but for me Adhraki lamb chops (£5.95) were the stars of the first act. Infused with black cardamom, fresh ginger and smoked paprika, the chops were supremely tender and still-pink within a crispy-chewy char-grilled skin. Like many people, I’m cutting down on red meat these days; when I do indulge it should always be this special. For mains we selected from an impressive range of seafood dishes. Goan king prawn curry (£12.50), from the North Kerala region, had a moreish sweet and sour sauce prepared with tamarind and fresh cooked nuts. Pan-fried scallops were translucent, tender and matched with a daringly different sauce of coconut mustard seeds and chilli puree.
Side dishes can make or break any Indian meal and in this case they only confirmed that culinary standards at The Front Room are on another level. Lemon and cashew rice (£1.95) was sprinkled with freshly fried nuts, lemon zest and cardamom; tandoori roti bread (£1.95) was the ideal sauce soakerupper and Punjab dal tarka (£3.95) was a smooth, velvety treat with a real garlic kick. A warm welcome awaits at The Front Room. It may have been the best-kept secret in Sheffield’s Indian restaurant world, but not for much longer. If it isn’t on your doorstep, it’s worth going the extra mile. The Front Room 481 Langsett Road Sheffield S6 2LN Tel: 0114 285 3439 www.thefrontroomsheffield.co.uk

A welcome inn RICH HISTORY, COSY INTERIOR AND GREAT FOOD… HANNAH SANDERS ENJOYS A VISIT TO THE PEACOCK AT ROWSLEY. estled in the Peak District National Park, The Peacock at Rowsley with its deep blue door, climbing ivy, and foot-high hedges encasing the rustic exterior has been a beacon of hospitality since the late 1600s. And this has never been truer, as after a foggy drive on winding roads, we were relieved to see the welcoming glow of this classic Derbyshire venue. Originally called Rowsley Manor, it was built for the steward of the nearby Haddon Hall, before becoming a dower house for the Manners family and finally in 1832 it became a hotel. The Peacock pays tribute to its rich history by retaining many original features. The bar area did not disappoint, as we were greeted by a crackling log fire, intricate peacock mural and feature wooden bar. While we perused the seasonal menu, I enjoyed a Larios – Spanish dry gin (£3.15), which was smooth and dry with delicate undertones of citrus and floral aromas – the perfect start to our evening. The dining room perfectly combines country style with a hint of elegance, offering an intimate and relaxing setting to unwind. We started our meal with a homemade black

treacle loaf and sourdough, both were dense and when covered with the creamy home churned butter were delectable. Starters began with duck encased in toasted seeds (£15) which was rich and indulgent, paired with the delicate flavour of white asparagus and sweetness of rhubarb it was almost heavenly. Whilst the pig head croquettes (£12.65) were perfectly crisp, served with ham and truffle and freshened by the celeriac. I chose monkfish as a main course after a rave recommendation from one of the staff, and it was a good steer. Served with a potato terrine, asparagus, sea kale and oyster, the monkfish (£36.55) had a subtle meaty flavour, which was enhanced by the seaweed sauce. By contrast lamb cutlet (£37) was cooked beautifully served with slightly caramelised onion, smooth goat’s curd and boulangere potatoes, definitely a favourite dish of the night. White chocolate crème brûlée (£7.80) was a perfectly formed thing and intentionally rich and indulgent, garnished with Kalamansi lime and fresh strawberries. But the theatrical dessert of lemon baked Alaska (£7.45) was a
perfect balance of tart and sweetness thanks to the pink grapefruit sauce. Our evening ended with an assortment of petit fours and coffee (£5.90) which offered up a whirlwind of flavours, leaving us talking about the salted caramel truffles and stick toffee macaroons the whole drive home. The Peacock at Rowsley, is in the heart of the countryside so it’s no wonder it’s been a haven for travellers for years, and with its welcoming staff, stunning interior and luscious food it’s still the perfect base to explore all that the area has to offer. Seaside special THE FISH, CHIPS AND MUSHY PEAS ARE TERRIFIC, BUT THERE’S MUCH MORE TO THE SEVEN SEAS THAN THAT, SAYS CHRIS WILSON. hink of a fish and chip shop with a restaurant attached and you may well conjure up the image of cafeteriastyle wipe-clean tables, plastic bucket seats and the ever-present aroma of deep frying. There’s nothing wrong with that of course, but at Seven Seas in Wickersley they’ve taken the basic concept and raised it by several notches. The restaurant is above the takeaway, uses a separate entrance and with all the cooking being done downstairs, you can actually smell the fresh spring flowers present on every table. And while the majority of the diners may well opt for fish, chips and peas with bread and butter and pot of tea (when it came to the crunch I could not resist ordering precisely that), this is a full on seafood restaurant with an impressive array of mains including salmon, seabass, plaice and even barramundi. Oh and there’s a small but very reasonably priced wine list, which I am sure will come into its own in the evenings. There are homemade gourmet meat pies too, if you aren’t of a fishy persuasion, but doesn’t that defeat the object? Still, it’s good to know that dedicated carnivores are being looked after. We arrived early on a stormy Wednesday lunchtime and the restaurant was soon busy and bustling. Seven Seas may be a hidden

gem for me but the word is obviously out in Wickersley. For starters we shared a seafood platter for two (£8.95) and before we dived in to the generous selection of white fish chunks, salt and pepper squid, pastry wrapped prawn twisters, calamari rings, tempura prawns and butterfly prawns, we paused for a moment to appreciate a really lovely looking plate of food. The salad garnish was plentiful and packed with colour, the batter was light, crisp and beautifully coloured, and it just looked terrific. Served with two dipping sauces, one sweet chilli the other more spicy, this was a very impressive introduction to a restaurant that delivers exactly what it sets out to achieve with some flair and obvious expertise. There’s been a chip shop on this site since 1931 but it was only six years ago that current owners Theo and Sugar took charge. They made the move to expand upstairs, creating the current restaurant, two years ago. For mains my haddock and chips (£9.95) was a generous portion of flaky white fish (sustainably caught in the cold deep waters of Norway and Iceland) in crunchy batter with good chips. Mushy peas (£1.20) and white sliced bread and butter (30p) completed the picture. I’ve driven a long way from landlocked Sheffield over the years, insisting that you need to reach the coast to experience
proper fish and chips. Time for a rethink. Seeking a lighter alternative, my companion opted for flame grilled seabass (£12.95), and was blown away by the two large fillets, beautifully cooked with crunchy skin, complete with those all-important scorch marks from the grill. Another colourful salad and a drizzle of pesto lifted this way above what you might expect from your standard chippy (although it does come with a portion of chips!) A pot of tea for one (£1.80) came in lovely crockery and, while dessert was a bit of an afterthought after such a generous lunch, we shared a mint chocolate ice-cream bomb (£4.50) and felt no need to eat again for the rest of the day. Spring has sprung! THIS IS A GREAT TIME OF YEAR TO SAMPLE THE FRESHEST NEW PRODUCE FROM THE CHATSWORTH ESTATE, SAYS RICHARD ABBEY. pring is a great time to visit the Chatsworth estate, whether you’re looking to appreciate the first bursts of colour in the magnificent gardens or take a trip to the farmyard to coo at the new-born animals. There are some great events coming up too, which you can read all about in this issue of Westside. But for foodies, spring is a great time to indulge in new menus and fantastic produce – think lamb, salmon, trout, peas, leeks, broccoli, cabbage and more. It’s a time of year when you see an injection of freshness into dining rooms everywhere. The Devonshire Arms in Beeley, located on the outskirts of the estate, has just launched its new spring menu and you’ll find plenty of these fine flavours in abundance. We visited the quaint, cosy 18th century country inn, which is part of the Devonshire Hotels & Restaurants Group, on a busy Saturday evening which was already buzzing on our arrival. We were seated in the snug bar area and left to peruse the tempting choices on offer. General manager Andy Morris, who has only been at the Devonshire for a couple of months, couldn’t speak highly enough of head chef Lewis Thornhill and was quick to
S
recommend the Chatsworth estate lamb (£16) from the specials as well as the chicken liver parfait (£8) to start. My wife insisted on having the former for mains, which on this occasion was braised shoulder served Moroccan style with cous cous, apricots and almonds. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous – this was a meaty, spicy, fragrant triumph. A glass of Australian shiraz from the Heywood estate (£9.50, large glass) was the perfect accompaniment. As good as the lamb was, I couldn’t find fault with the food served on my side of the table. The fried duck egg, wild mushrooms, charred leeks and lemon caper meuniere (£9) was the perfect spring dish, simple yet packed with flavour. The lemon dressing added a real citrussy kick too. For mains, my fillet of hake, served with purple sprouting broccoli, deep fried salsify, parmentier potatoes, anchovy butter and red wine jus (£16) was well balanced and, again, packed with flavour. I particularly liked the crunchy salsify which added texture to the dish. Sticky toffee pudding is always a given when dining out with my wife and the Devonshire’s version, served with butterscotch, rum-soaked raisins and vanilla
ice cream (£6) didn’t disappoint, sweet and indulgent just as it should be. A cheese board (five cheeses £10) provided a lighter alternative for me, the perfect end to meal. The English counties cheeses – Gortnamana goats cheese, gubbeen, Keen’s cheddar, Boy Laity camembert and Shropshire blue – all had their merits, but for me, the latter was the winner and paired well with the accompanying apple chutney, celery, grapes and crackers. Sated, we could have easily settled into one of the comfy sofas for the rest of the evening. Spring has most definitely sprung at the Devonshire Arms at Beeley. WESTSIDE HEROES
Jake and Pierre on some of their previous adventures
Half the World Away JAKE AND PIERRE ARE GEARING UP TO TACKLE AN EPIC EURASIAN CHALLENGE IN AID OF NEWLIFE. ake Johnson and his friend Pierre will be setting off from Singapore on New Year’s Day 2019, hoping to burn off those Christmas calories over a period of approximately seven months, as they cycle roughly 16,500km through South East Asia, over the Tibetan Plateau and amongst the Himalayas, before riding through Pakistan, Iran and finally into Europe. “The countries that we hope to be passing through are: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, China, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy and France,” says Jake. “I think the most challenging parts will be the cold and altitude of the Himalayas in March and the heat of Iran in May. But
J
118 Westside | www.sheffieldvibe.com
funnily enough, these are the parts which Pierre and I are both super excited to ride, exactly for the reason of their toughness. “They promise to be gruelling but also sublimely beautiful, to the extent that I find it hard to contain my excitement when I talk or think about the prospect of visiting these places.” As for the motivation and the ‘why’ behind the trip, Pierre and Jake both had the eccentric idea of one day undertaking a transcontinental cycle ride, driven by a love of adventure, taking on challenges, and rather importantly, cycling. And as it turns out, 2019 is the year Jake finishes his degree in physics at the University of Manchester, while Pierre is currently working in New Zealand and will ultimately need to return to France, meaning
this abstract idea has been able to take real form. “I’m local to Stannington/Rivelin and during my time in lower education I took part in a DofE expedition which really got me into the outdoors. “Afterwards, I bought a bike, and I haven’t looked back since. Especially now that the roads around Bradfield and Strines Reservoir have been so beautifully tarmacked – it’s impossible not to love cycling in such a stunning playground. “As for Pierre, he’s not from S6. He is French. He studied psychology in Montpellier but is now in New Zealand working and travelling. He’s always been really sporty, especially on a bike, but he’s dabbled in all sorts, from archery to mountaineering.
WESTSIDE HEROES
“He and I met three summers ago and we’ve been great friends ever since, especially last year since I lived in France, which meant that we could frequently meet up and go on adventures. For example, we ran a marathon together, cycled from Lyon to Montpellier, and went on a couple of mountaineering trips.” Aside from a desire to satiate their appetites for adventure, Jake and Pierre’s additional goal is to raise money for Newlife, a charity that provides mobility equipment for children who need it most. And for Jake, this is a cause which he feels very strongly about, as his little sister has been confined to a wheelchair throughout her entire life. “I’ve seen first-hand the difference mobility equipment can make to quality of life, not only for my sister, but for my family in general, and it seems almost intuitive for us to undertake a great physical challenge to ultimately help out those who have physical limitations, in whatever form that may be. “We’re hoping that the money raised, as well as the gesture of our ride, will go towards helping young people by alleviating the barriers of mobility – disabled is not synonymous with ‘not able’!” Along the way, Jake and Pierre don’t want
to ‘disappear under the radar’, they plan to keep supporters in the loop by sharing videos, photographs and writing blog posts, to chronicle the lowest of lows and the highest of highs. “We don’t want the only communication with home to be a ‘Don’t panic mum, I’m safe‘ text every couple of weeks. We ultimately want people to share what we’re doing and we want to paint a picture of travel by bicycle, of not fearing strangers (within reason) and in saying yes to opportunities along the way. “Our philosophy is yes – get to France by bike. But along the way we want to accumulate a wealth of tales to regale our pals with once we get home. And also, if we’ve got a reasonably constant stream of material coming through via social media, then people are going to want to follow what we’re up to (we hope) and this should hopefully mean that we end up raising more money for a very worthy cause.” What’s more, the intrepid duo plan to announce a way in which they want to get supporters more intimately involved in their adventure – no, it’s not a VR cycling scenario. But for now, this idea is under development, so keep an eye on the Half the World Away Facebook page and blog for more information. To fund their adventure, Jake and Pierre are running a Just Giving page and a crowdfunding website, where people can
donate money which will go towards equipment costs, and at the same time, they are also applying for sponsorship, inviting companies into a partnership in which they provide equipment in return reviews – they are looking primarily for bikes, a tent and technical clothing. “There are times when I think this is going to be easy – all we have to do is turn round pedals with our legs for eight hours a day, eat loads of food, sleep and repeat. We get to see the most gorgeous scenery in the world, meet people from all over, and all while staying super fit. But on the other hand, there are times when intrepidation breaks into fear, and I become anxious about all the challenges and misfortune that could befall us. But I am confident that we can overcome the challenges, saunter through the lows and soar through the highs, hopefully coming out of the other side yearning for more.” Keep up to date with Jake and Pierre’s journey via Instagram, Facebook and the Half the World Away blog: www.halftheworldaway356425755. wordpress.com and if you would like to donate or help in any way, visit: www.gofundme.com/cycling-eurasia-forcharity for equipment donations and www.justgiving.com/fundraising/cyclingeurasia-for-charity for charity donations.

f you are searching for a reputable, independent, alternative to the main dealerships to service your Jaguar or Land Rover, the answer is right under your nose. Sheffield Prestige Ltd was established in December 2010 and operates from a spacious, clean, secure and well-lit workshop located just off Abbeydale Road (A621) on Little London Road. Specialising in all Jaguar and Land Rover models, from the 1970s up to the present day, they offer the usual services, repairs and sales available from main dealerships, only with a more personal service. “We offer the same brilliant level of service as the main dealers, but deliver a more personal service, where the people who fix your car are the people you speak to directly, so you always know the jobs you ask for get done and know exactly what you’re paying for,” says managing director, Matt Quail. “We feel that we understand the needs of our customers and take real pride in every car we handle and believe we offer a genuine alternative to the main dealers with savings of up to 60 per cent without compromising on quality.

Man on a mission One Sheffield man loves his six Jaguars so much, he decided to show them off to other enthusiasts. Stuart Dixon from Retford has had several Jaguar XKRs wrapped in colours associated with motorsports – a couple of which were sourced by Sheffield Prestige. Not content to keep them to himself, Stuart regularly takes the fleet to motor shows up and down the country to raise money for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice. He has presented the charity with a cheque for £4,884 for his work in 2017 and has already raised over £1,000 towards 2018’s fund. “Sheffield Prestige have sponsored a car and the ‘Silk Cut’ car is going to carry all the names of the children that the hospice has treated in a colourful stripe down each side of the car,” says Stuart. “I look forward to meeting other XK owners as we go to shows around the country.” Come and see Stuart’s Jaguars and help raise money for a worthy cause by visiting the Supercar Experience at Meadowhall on Saturday 12 May 2018.

✩✩✩✩✩ Quite simply the best experience I have ever had buying a car. Matt and his team are genuine, honest and really do go the extra mile to make your car purchase a stress free and happy experience. If you are looking to buy a trustworthy high quality car with A*** customer service then I can 110 per cent recommend Sheffield Prestige. By far the best, more companies should take a leaf from your book Matt! We will be recommending you to all! Thank you!

✩✩✩✩✩ If I could rate 6 stars I would! Was having an issue with my rear door lock. Popped in to speak to the guys, who you could tell knew the car inside out. They ordered the suspected part. The next day they collected the car from my house and dropped it off that evening... Now that's what I call service. Even gave the car a wash! I would have no hesitation recommending this company and my car will be back with them whenever it needs a service/repair. Lee was super helpful. Thanks guys and keep up the great work.
