WS Legal

Gary Crothers, solicitor advocate (higher courts civil proceedings) and family law specialist at Wosskow Brown, on family arrangements for Christmas.

A

s the countdown commences, many people will be approaching the festive season not with boundless joy but instead with a sense of trepidation. For separated families – especially those who have only recently parted – Christmas can bring stressful decisions. And while deciding where the children will spend their time during the Christmas holidays may be the last thing you want to think about right now, the sooner you decide, the more relaxed everyone will be by the time December arrives. Arrangements should be in place to determine where the children will wake up on Christmas morning, if or when they will see the other parent on the day, or if they will be spending alternate Christmases with each parent. Leaving it until the last minute to make these plans could put a dampener on what would otherwise be an enjoyable time for all. If there is a dispute it may become necessary to make an application to the courts for a Child Arrangement Order, a

court order that states who a child should live with, how often they see the other parent and can also deal with the arrangements for special days such as Christmas and birthdays. The application to court must be made well in advance; this process can take weeks or even months to complete so you mustn’t leave it too late. Of course, we will explore every alternative to prevent a court order having to be issued, and we are well equipped to conduct negotiations between parents. So, even if all you need is a little professional advice to make the decision, we are here to help. To find out more about any legal matters concerning children, call your local branch and ask to speak to the family team.

BUILDING BLOCKS Saving for children is now easier as rules allowing the transfer of Child Trust Funds to Junior ISAs come into force.

irst proposed back in December 2013, the new tax year finally saw the introduction of new rules offering the chance for parents to switch their children’s savings from obsolete Child Trust Funds (CTFs) to more flexible Junior ISAs.

F

CTFs never really caught on. Launched in 2005 to encourage parents to save tax-efficiently for their offspring, CTFs were opened for 6.3 million children born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011, boosted by an initial £250 voucher from the government. When no account was opened by the parents, which happened in 30% of cases¹, the government automatically opened a ‘stakeholder’ CTF on the child’s behalf. But although some £4.8 billion is currently invested in CTFs, only one in five accounts have had additional contributions made by parents, family or friends¹. Complexity and lack of investment choice were cited as the main problems. When the coalition government replaced CTFs with the more flexible Junior ISAs in 2011, providers of CTF accounts had little incentive to make them an attractive investment proposition. Starting out The rule change now means that millions of children aged between 4 and 12 have savings pots which might be more profitably invested in a Junior ISA for the period until they reach 18. The average stakeholder CTF is worth around £900, whilst non-stakeholder accounts average £1,500¹. And that head start could be an extremely valuable one given the financial world in which our children are growing up. The Institute of Fiscal Studies estimates that those attending university will graduate with debts in excess of £44,000. The average cost of a house deposit for a first-time buyer is now just under £30,000, and the average age of a first-time buyer is now 30², which is surely incentive enough for parents and children to maximise the potential for savings!

Alternatively, those with the discipline to remain invested will have their Junior ISA rolled-over into a standard ISA once they are 18, and can continue to enjoy the benefits of investing tax-efficiently. The value transferred from a CTF into a Junior ISA does not count towards the allowance of £4,080 that can be invested in this tax year. Future increases to the annual allowance will be inflation-linked. Even for the oldest child with a CTF, the remaining years until they reach maturity offer a significant opportunity to build tax-efficient capital for their future, and perhaps help grandparents with Inheritance Tax mitigation through the use of gifting exemptions. As saving for the children in our lives becomes more of a necessity than an aspiration, the introduction of a more simple and flexible solution is a welcome development in an increasingly complex financial world. ¹ HMRC, November 2013 ² Halifax Building Society, 2014 The value of an investment with St. James's Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested. The favourable tax treatment given to a Junior ISA may not be maintained in the future as it is subject to changes in legislation.

The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested. Cookery is back on the curriculum at Sheffield High School as part of a commitment to preparing pupils for later life.

A recipe for success

F

rom good old fashioned cookery to home economics, domestic science and food technology, learning to cook has had many different guises over the years, but most people would agree that cooking is an essential skill for life. It is also one of those subjects that has had a chequered history in schools, regularly coming on and off the curriculum, but 25 years since it was last taught in the school, cookery is now back on the menu at Sheffield High School. It has been added to the timetable after feedback from the girls themselves, who repeatedly brought the suggestion to the staff via school council. Sheffield High School, based on a leafy seven-acre campus in Broomhill, across the road from the Botanical Gardens, has an ongoing programme of improvements to its facilities. The purpose-built cookery room has been created in School House, which has been completely refurbished with eight fully functioning workstations, a demonstration area, prep room and state-of-the-art cookery equipment, providing a bright and airy learning space for up to 14 girls at a time. Sixth form students in Years 12-13 are being taught key skills for life after school as part of their enrichment programme, learning how to cook on a budget, preparing them for university and beyond. Lower down the

school, Years 7-9 are all completing an 18-week cookery course and have the opportunity to join ‘Grub Club’ as part of the extra-curricular programme. The Junior School is also getting in on the act with their cookery club and Year 6s will be using the new cookery room later in the year. Leading the cookery team is Helen

‘One of our principal aims at Sheffield High is to develop the talents and interests of all our girls and ensure they are fully prepared for life beyond school.’

Simpson who has taught cookery for over 25 years. She is passionate about teaching and believes that learning to cook a nutritious meal from scratch is a skill that everyone should possess. “Knowing how to create a quick and easy meal is a fundamental skill. As part of the learning, we cover the really important topic of healthy eating, making sure that the students understand how to cook to keep nutrients in the food and the principles of the Eat Well plate.” Head Valerie Dunsford is delighted to see cookery back on the timetable at Sheffield High. “So far this term we have had some amazing risottos, pizzas and scones cooked by the girls and I have heard about plans for a pop-up restaurant next term, which I’m thoroughly looking forward to. “One of our principal aims at Sheffield High is to develop the talents and interests of all our girls and ensure they are fully prepared for life beyond school. It’s great to see the girls enjoying cooking and not being afraid to try new things.” Sheffield High School Sixth Form Open Morning takes place on Saturday 14th November from 9.15am. anet damaged her knee several years ago during a skiing holiday. This resolved and several years later whilst stepping over a stile she fell and twisted the same knee. After a couple of weeks hobbling around and applying ice to the swollen knee she started to improve. She was sent for a scan that showed that her anterior cruciate ligament (central knee ligament) had snapped. She wanted to avoid surgery as she worried about the possible complications such as infection, wound healing and the possible effects of the general anaesthetic. The surgeon said she needed surgery to repair the ligament. What should she do? This is a common scenario seen at Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic. The research suggests that a conservative approach is the best approach initially as most injuries resolve with strengthening and restoration of normal muscle control around the knee. If you don't improve after a year of the injury, then surgery may be an option. Understandably, Janet was confused and needed help making a decision. She received help from her GP who agreed that a conservative approach was sensible. From my experience, the willingness the go under the knife shown by members of the public is not seen in people who work in the health industry. Maybe they have a better understanding of the risk/benefits of surgery and will only consider an operation after extensive physiotherapy. Surgery can have amazing results, but doesn’t always have to be the first option. . Recovery from surgery can be long and protracted and necessitate long periods off work or other activities. Janet avoided surgery and returned to full activities that included running and tennis. The knee just got stronger with use and progressive loading. It is amazing how the body can repair itself with time and correct physiotherapy. Come and get a second opinion at Hallamshire Physiotherapy Clinic.

‘A healthy lifestyle is important to maximise your chances of fertility. If you are still struggling, Jessop Fertility is here to help.’

What you can do After months or even years of trying to get pregnant, it may feel like conception will be impossible without medical assistance. But did you know that there are a number of measures you can take to improve your chances of conceiving naturally? A healthy weight and lifestyle is very important. A balanced diet that contains plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains provides a good basis. Folic acid and Vitamin D supplements can help to improve the outcome if you do become pregnant, and taking regular exercise, cutting out smoking, alcohol and caffeine, and avoiding recreational or performance-enhancing drugs can really help. Underlying medical problems should also be addressed, and resolved if possible. Men should follow the same advice, but are allowed a small amount of alcohol per week as recent research from the University of Sheffield has showed that men who drank within guidelines had sperm that was just as good as men who were teetotal. So there is no need to become a monk if you don’t want to – the odd drink is quite all right. If after taking these steps you are still struggling, Jessop Fertility is here to help. If you’ve been trying for a year without success you can seek a referral from your GP. However, if you are over 35, have had abdominal surgery, have issues with your periods, or your partner has had testicular problems, don’t wait as long and think about seeing your GP after six months.

What Jessop Fertility does

Top Tips • Keep trying regularly – this maximises the chance of conception and promotes healthy sperm • Healthy lifestyle – have a balanced diet and stop smoking and drinking (although men may drink a small amount) • Ensure your weight is in the healthy range – women who are over or underweight don’t produce eggs as well and overweight men have poorer sperm • Folic acid – women should take a supplement to ensure a healthy baby • Don’t overheat your testicles – avoid tight underwear and keep them cool • If you are not pregnant after a year get referred for help – consider earlier referral if you are older or have other problems

Many people think of assisted conception and assume that IVF is the only option. In fact, only around one third of couples require IVF, and there are many more treatments available. Jessop Fertility is able to offer a full range of investigative procedures to ensure that you receive the most appropriate treatment, and is also renowned as a centre of excellence for reproductive and tubal surgery. A free counselling service is also available for all patients, which is part of their commitment to ensuring emotional, as well as physical, needs are taken care of. Sometimes, this advice and reassurance is all that is needed to promote natural conception. While some couples are eligible for NHS

treatment, the clinic is also open to selffunding patients and offers a very competitive, fully inclusive package with no hidden costs. This includes consultations relating to treatment, all standard medications, time-lapse technology incubators, blastocyst culture, embryo glue, HIV screening, HFEA fees and early pregnancy monitoring.

Research Jessop Fertility is a non profit-making operation and the money generated by selffunding patients is fed straight back into their many services. They strive to improve knowledge and treatments through the ground-breaking research carried out on-site and, over the years, have researched topics such as male factor infertility with Professor Allan Pacey, how stress affects fertility, fertility preservation prior to cancer treatment, and recurrent miscarriage. One of the most exciting research projects currently taking place is the endometrial scratch trial led by consultant gynaecologist Mostafa Metwally, who was appointed two years ago to further enhance the centre’s excellent research profile. The national study received a £1.26m grant from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and will be contributed to by ten other centres across the UK. 1,000 women around the country, including Sheffield, will be invited to take part. The study is due to start July 2016. Mostafa explains: “A small biopsy taken from the lining of the womb during an IVF cycle is commonly known as an endometrial scratch. For some time we’ve known that women who have had unsuccessful IVF cycles might have an improved chance of getting pregnant if they have this procedure. The aim of this pioneering research is to discover whether it can help women who are having IVF for the first time.” Jessop Fertility The Jessop Wing, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Tree Root Walk, Sheffield, S10 2SF Tel: 0114 226 8050 Twitter: @JessopFertility www.jessopfertility.org.uk

Play Racketball Racketball is the UK’s fastest growing racket sport. It is played indoors on a squash court so can be enjoyed all year round no matter what the weather. It is a great 40 minute workout, burning anywhere between 500 - 1,000 calories in one session. With over 700 squash and racketball members at Hallamshire, there are opportunities for complete beginners to advanced players of any age. The game is suited to beginners with a bouncier ball and larger racket, and is a great way to get fit and more active in a social and friendly atmosphere. Racketball is a great game for players who have no previous racket experience and is a fun alternative to the gym. Skills can be easily acquired and players can rapidly gain confidence. We invite you to attend one of our drop in sessions for free and to enjoy a cup of coffee and a chat in our café bar afterwards. All you need are some comfortable clothes (T-shirt and shorts or tracksuit) and a pair of nonmarking trainers. Racket and balls will be provided.

Not in front of the children

Breaking up is hard to do – particularly if children are involved. Law firm Irwin Mitchell offers some tips on parenting after a break-up or divorce.

C

o-parenting after a relationship breakdown or divorce can be a challenge, but it’s important to work together when children are involved. Following relationship breakdown most parents will say that their main priority is their children. Parents want the best for their children and will go to any length to achieve this. However, after a particularly acrimonious or bitter break-up, this is often easier said than done. Zoe Round, partner at Irwin Mitchell’s Family team, says “Most parents want to create a healthy, happy and stable environment in which their children can grow and flourish. Post break-up, parents often have to work hard to create that balance and put the child’s needs first. It’s important to try and retain mutual respect for the sake of the child and to appreciate that each parent may have different parenting styles. “ Parents should try their best to put their

feelings for each other aside, not put their children in the middle of any disagreements, or complain about the other parent in front of the them. David Lister, a lawyer in the Family team added,” What each parent wants to happen may not be what the child wants or be in their best interests. Children’s wishes and feelings should be at the forefront of any arrangements but you should not involve them in the discussions or arguments. They find it very upsetting when their parents are in conflict and the stress and anxiety can stay with them for a long time. Some families share weekends so that the children spend one day with one parent and the next with the other. Others alternate weekends to enable them to visit the seaside or visit relatives who live far away. Whatever the arrangement is, try to make it a fair one. Children can become accustomed to and enjoy having homes. You and your ex need to find a way that you can both be involved in

your child’s day to day life and care. The team of family lawyers also suggests that clients respect each other’s time and try to plan ahead to resolve any issues as early as possible so that it can be a happy and relaxed time for their children, especially if they are just getting used to their mum and dad living apart. The team often advise clients through mediation, where parents can agree to a plan to support their child; communication is key as well as maintaining a routine and adhering to financial arrangements.

If you would like to know more about the family services the team at Irwin Mitchell can offer, please contact Zoe Round 0114 274 4400 zoe.round@irwinmitchell.com or David Lister on 0114 274 4639 david.lister@irwinmitchell.com

With a combined experience of over 50 years, Nick and Dawn not only owe their success to their breadth of hands-on shoe repair and key cutting knowledge, but to their years of dedicated customer service. hoes and keys have been an essential part of our everyday lives for thousands of years, so much so, that we take them for granted. That is, until we lose our keys or our favourite heels wear down. It’s not surprising then, that there has been a cobblers based in the same location at 145 West Street in the bustling centre of Sheffield for nearly 100 years. The shop has been a Cobblers & Keys since 2006, and is now undergoing a brand new refit to become even better equipped to provide a quality shoe repair and key cutting service. Cobblers & Keys was originally established by Nick and Dawn Clark in Grimsby in 2001. The business proved so successful, that a second branch opened in Scunthorpe within the same year. Their professional, expert service continued to grow and a further two branches opened in Sheffield; one on West Street and the

Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate Independent Education Girls & Boys 3 to 19 years Day & Boarding Thorpe Underwood, Yorkshire. Phone: 01423 333 330 Email: info@QE.org Web: www.QE.org

Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?

Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £20m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org

Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.

Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.

Are we all about day pupils? A LEVEL RESULTS 2015 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 97% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”

No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.

Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.

All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). FAMILY SIBLING AWARDS Day & Boarding Our discounts are bigger than others, if indeed they even offer them. Brothers & sisters - boarders from 12% - 20%, day pupils 10%.

WS Eating Out

Excellence on demand Words and photography: Phoebe Seymour

Can’t face the kitchen? Never fear, Bilash will always rise to the occasion with a quick and tasty curry.

A

fter a busy weekend of family visits and a birthday bash until the early hours of Sunday morning, it’s fair to say my kitchen had been neglected. Towering pots made it almost impossible to cook and I didn’t even want to try. This lazy Sunday evening was the perfect time for a takeaway curry. There are so many curry houses in the area, it can be difficult to know which one to choose. But before you spend ages trawling the web and comparing ratings, you might be interested to hear that Bilash Tandoori House on Sharrow Vale Road has been serving delicious dishes to its loyal customers since 1986. Owner Abdul Jahir and his team are proud of the reputation they have developed over the past 29 years and the walls of their cosy waiting room are covered in rave reviews. They have a top Food Hygiene Rating of five and they now offer a free delivery service on orders over £12 so you don’t even have to leave the house. However, I decided to stretch my legs and collect our order whilst my partner washed some pots and set the table. As someone with a lot of vegetarian friends, it was great to find a vegetarian menu with a list of set meals for up to eight people, as well as an allergy awareness guide. Highlighting eggs and dairy products, it’s also a helpful guide for vegans. Once I was home, my partner and I quickly devoured the papadoms and the restaurant-worthy pickle tray and poured the remaining raita on our starters. My tandoori king prawn starter came marinated in a thick and lightly spiced sauce, whilst my partner had

a crisp and classic onion bhaji – both came with a fresh side salad. A great way to test a tandoori chef is to ask for one of the mildest and one of the spiciest dishes on the menu so my partner ordered a chicken korma, whilst I opted for a chicken tikka jalfrezi. My succulent chicken was surrounded by generous slices of green and red chillies in a thin sauce which became hotter with every mouthful, whilst my partners sweet and thick coconut korma was a welcome break. Both curries were packed with their own unique flavours and went well with the saffron-yellow pilau rice and the strong flavour

of the garlic mushrooms. These delicious sauces proved so moreish, I mopped up every drop with soft and warm pieces of garlic naan. Various things can go wrong when you order a takeaway. Everyone knows how annoying it is when you arrive home and realise something is missing, but with Bilash even the little details are taken care of, from the extra tub of raita sauce, to the fresh bag of side salad. Combined with their ability to master an array of dishes and to whip them up in under half an hour, it’s no wonder Bilash have stood the test of time and impressed critics again and again.

WS Eating Out

Words: Chris Wilson

A taste of something special

Executive chef Christian Kent

Tasting menus are an opportunity for a chef to truly showcase his skills. How does this East Lodge offering compare?

T

asting menus are tricky beasts: if they aren’t absolutely spot on they become more of an endurance test than the luxurious, slightly decadent treat they should be. For starters (so to speak) there’s the question of whether there is enough variety on the menu to make eating so many different dishes worthwhile. If it’s boring, you’re in for a long evening. Then there is the vexed question of portion sizes. A taster is just that – nothing should resemble a main course. My personal rule of thumb is that by the time the pudding and cheese comes around you should still actually be hungry… if you feel as if you have become embroiled in a grim man-versus-food fight to the finish line, something has gone awry. So it was with a certain amount of trepidation that I approached the chef’s special eight course tasting menu at East Lodge. I needn’t have worried. With executive chef Christian Kent and head chef Brandon Shepherd in the kitchen, we were offered a menu that read brilliantly and translated off the page into a succession of dazzling dishes that looked beautiful and were full of gorgeous flavours and contrasting textures. This is cuisine designed to stimulate tired tastebuds and with dishes sprinkled with fresh herbs and flowers and artfully drizzled with sauces and dressings, every plate is a feast for the eyes. It’s hard to single out individual dishes when every course was a highlight, but one stellar moment involved a pan-seared scallop with fresh cep mushrooms, Champagne and white chocolate risotto. The white chocolate brought an extra richness to a velvety risotto.

WESTSIDE 104

Grilled mullet with squid ink and a pea and mint purée was another mini miracle. It looked spectacular, with the red crispy fish skin, green purée and jet black ink, and tasted so spectacular I risked taking the enamel off the bowl by trying to scrape up as much of the sticky squid sauce as possible with my fork. Next time I’ll make sure I have a couple of East Lodge’s excellent fresh-baked bread rolls to hand and do some serious mopping up after each savoury course – decorum be damned. There were surprising touches everywhere that were not just gimmicks but truly enhanced the flavour. The crunch of candied walnut alongside poached and roast partridge; sharp goats cheese with slightly sweet granola – all clever, cheffy, tasty stuff. As for my own little rule, come the time for dessert – a refreshing deconstructed lemon and blackberry cheesecake – eating was still most definitely a pleasure, not a chore. The tasting menu is rather special and, to make it even more memorable, Christian has designed a wine flight, making full use of East Lodge’s extensive list, to match each course. Service and setting can’t help but enhance the dining experience. White linen, silver service and friendly staff were all immaculate and East Lodge remains the epitome of unstuffy good taste with its charming décor and beautifully manicured gardens. Some of the dishes we tasted are available on the a la carte menu, which is full of tempting classical dishes making full use of locally-sourced ingredients. East Lodge’s own gardens also provide a constant source of fresh herbs and vegetables. In short, the setting is as spectacular as ever and I doubt the food has ever been better. Now is the perfect time for a taster of East Lodge.

What we ate: Chef’s Tasting Menu (£65 per person) Goat’s cheese and mascarpone mousse with granola and textures of beetroot Pan-seared scallop with fresh cep mushrooms, Champagne and white chocolate risotto scented with truffle Poached and roasted breast of partridge with a watercress mash, soubise purée, courgettes, candied walnuts and a port and star anise sauce Grilled mullet with squid ink and a pea and mint purée Rump of lamb with salt baked and confit garlic, parsley mash and red wine jus Lemon, blackberry cheesecake: textures of lemon, blackberry with oat crumb and lemon sorbet A selection of British and continental cheeses Selection of coffee, leaf teas or infusions served with home-made petit fours East Lodge Hotel and Restaurant Rowsley, Derbyshire DE4 2EF Tel: 01629 734474 www.eastlodge.com

WS Food & Drink

Having a ball

From riotous Romans to My Sweet 16, we look at how the nature of throwing a party has evolved through the ages, writes Fiona Barber.

F

rom eating and entertaining to drinking and dancing, no matter what the occasion, any excuse to gather friends and family for a celebration is a good one. But throwing a party certainly isn’t a new idea; we’ve delved right back to Roman times and dipped into various points in history to find out how our ancestors celebrated.

The Romans in Britain Let’s start with the Romans, since they are credited with bringing civilisation to Britain. Their dinner parties were elaborate, often lasted up to eight hours and could be dignified or disgusting affairs, depending on the host and his choice of guests. Overindulgence was the rule rather than the exception and adults did not sit on chairs around the table like we do today; instead they laid on sloping couches around a square table – only small children or slaves were permitted to eat sitting. Of course, no dinner party would be complete without entertainment and, for the Romans, this included actors performing scenes from a popular play or a dancing display. Anyone with status in the community would hold regular dinner parties, which were not just a gathering of friends, but – just like a visit to the Roman baths – also an occasion for the host to mingle with local and regional dignitaries, to gain their friendship and support.

Tudor times Several centuries down the line the Tudors knew how to entertain. The mere mention of a Tudor banquet conjures up images of a riotous feast, with Henry VIII at the top of the table gnawing on a giant-sized chicken leg. But as with many historical stereotypes the reality was somewhat different. Banquets were formal occasions, with rules that mirrored the class system and social etiquette of the day. They also provided the host with the perfect opportunity to show off their wealth and importance by serving guests the most magnificent food, which could include venison, swan, peacock, heron, porpoise and seagull. Sometimes the skin and feathers of a peacock would be carefully removed, then once it was cooked they were replaced, as if it were still alive. This was considered a sign of wealth. These glamorous occasions could include up to six courses, as well as extensive entertainment with mummers, jugglers, jesters, acrobats or even fire-eaters.

WESTSIDE 108

Regency London Fast forward 200 years or so and things had become rather more refined. During the Regency, and into the Victorian era, the real highlight of the London social season were the debutante balls, which were hosted at the grand houses of the aristocracy. Débutantes that went through the ‘coming out’ process, including a presentation to the Queen in court, were expected to be married within two or three years or considered a failure. A single woman at 30 was a hopeless spinster. Imagine that. The Queen brought the curtain down on the royal curtsey in 1958 because of fears that ‘fixers’ could accept payment for introducing outsider debs into British high society. Throughout the sixties and seventies, the whirl of debutante parties and social events became more of an anachronism and in 1976 the renowned Queen Charlotte’s Ball in London folded amid rumours of drugtaking and general debauchery. So much for high society! Not all debutantes married off and went to live a genteel existence though. One of the last debs presented to the Queen, Fiona MacCarthy, rebelled against court traditions by carving out a successful career as a journalist and biographer and another deb of 1958, Teresa Hayter, later came out as an international Marxist.

Roaring Twenties On to the Roaring Twenties, the Great War was over and people were yearning for a bit of fun. For youngsters from the aristocracy and wealthier classes, life had never been better. Nightclubs, jazz clubs and cocktail bars flourished in the cities and there was an emphasis on having fun and spending money. For the first time, more Americans lived in cities than on farms. The nation’s total wealth more than doubled between 1920 and 1929, and this economic growth swept many Americans into an affluent but unfamiliar consumer society. People wanted to enjoy themselves as much as they could, by listening to the new jazz music, or learning new dances such as the Charleston and the black bottom. Young women with bobbed hair and short skirts, known as ‘flappers’ – drank, smoked, were sexually liberated and danced the new dances in the city speakeasies – and became an iconic symbol of the times. For many of us The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925, represents the Roaring Twenties, and many 20s-themed parties today are inspired by the excessively extravagant parties thrown by young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby in his white mansion on Long Island.

1970s We’ll bypass the swinging sixties and move straight to the early seventies, where disco was born. Saturday Night Fever (1977) helped turn the simmering subculture into a mainstream fad. Those that had been too young to enjoy the sixties social revolution wanted something to call their own and so, in their mini-skirts, platform shoes, flared trousers, and mullet hairstyles, they danced the night away. Anyone who admits to being old enough to remember attending house parties in the 1970s will also remember Abigail’s Party, Mike Leigh’s brutally funny comedy drama. From the fashions (floral flock dresses and butterfly collar shirts) to finger food (who fancies another cheesy pineapple one?) set to a soundtrack of Demis Roussos, it’s all horribly true.

Modern times Moving onto modern times; if there’s one thing for certain when it comes to celebrating nowadays, we are spoilt for choice in terms of venues and entertainment. Pubs, bars, hotels and clubs are all popular places to host a special occasion and many now offer additional activities such as cocktail masterclasses. The development of technology has also changed how we celebrate. Music streaming services such as Spotify, for example, have made it easier than ever for us to create our own playlists and act as DJ for the evening. In other developments, shows like MTV’s My Super Sweet 16 – a reality series, which follows privileged 15-year-olds plan extravagant sweet 16 parties – have raised expectations for many British teenagers, and party rings and pass the parcel no longer suffice.

No matter how or where you celebrate, the core ingredients remain the same today as they did hundreds of years ago; great people, delicious food and drink, and some form of entertainment.Take this as a starting point and make it as simple or extravagant as you like – you’re guaranteed to have a ball.

WS Eating Out

Transport of delight La Terraza is so authentically Italian you could be forgiven for thinking you were actually there. Words and photography: Stephanie Burns

I

t is rare to feel like you’ve been transported to another country while dining out. But with Italian waiting staff conversing in their native tongue, posters of Sorrento plastered over the walls, and food being about as close to authentic cuisine as it’s possible to get outside of the country itself, La Terrazza sure has achieved it. When my partner and I visited on a blustery Friday night, we could easily see why this cosy little trattoria has been a Sharrow Vale Road favourite since 1997. Lidia Cantelmi – the sister of former owner Mario – is now in charge, having qualified as a chef at Sheaf Training and taken over last year aged just 18.Very little has changed since Mario’s departure, but why fix something that ain’t broke? “My brother did such a good job here, there was no question whether I would carry on his tried and tested formula,” she said. Looking around at the packed restaurant, it was abundantly clear she’d made the right call. The food, as expected, was fabulous. My zesty starter of mackerel with a huge dollop of lime-spiked sour cream and fresh mixed leaves on a doorstep of homemade bread, finished off with a sweet balsamic reduction, was sheer perfection. Fish is something of a speciality here and it’s always worth checking

WESTSIDE 112

out the daily specials board to see what’s new. Across the table, my partner’s thin and crispy garlic bread, smothered with flavoursome tomato sauce and drizzled with pesto, also went down a storm. When our mains arrived, a touch of theatre was served up too. Not only did the waitress brandish a huge wooden pepper grinder – the experience wouldn’t have been complete without it – but she also came armed with an unusual parmesan-grating contraption. One gentle squeeze of the handle and fresh cheese cascaded onto my pumpkin ravioli with ease. And what a dish it The parmesan grater in action

What we ate: Starters Smoked mackerel with sour cream, £6.95 Garlic bread with tomato and pesto, £3.95 Mains Cappellini di zucca, £8.65 Filletto mignois, £18.95 Chips, £2.50 Dessert Tiramisu, £4.95 Coppa Terrazza, £4.50 Drinks Sauvignon IGT Intrigo 175ml, £3.95 Artisan beer, £5.95 Montano Italian cider, £3.50 La Terrazza 352 Sharrow Vale Rd, Sheffield, S11 8ZP 0114 268 5150

enhanced. A smooth and rich pumpkin puree came encased in pillows of perfectly cooked pasta, surrounded by sundried tomatoes, rocket pesto and a kick of fresh chilli. This was a well-balanced and absolutely delicious dish. My partner had chosen something completely different. The filletto mignois was every bit the indulgent main; a medium rare beef fillet, sliced aubergines and taleggio cheese doused in a white wine and garlic béchamel sauce. With a bowl of handcut chips (ordered as an extra side) and an assortment of tasty vegetables to accompany the beef, he was perfectly content. Our evening finished with two superb desserts; a creamy tiramisu with just the right hit of coffee and a trio of ice-creams, including a watermelon flavour that almost managed to steal the entire show. It had been a truly wonderful evening – an authentic taste of Italy in one of Sheffield’s most popular locations will always be a recipe for success.

WS Eating In

CHEF IN THE HOUSE No kitchen meltdowns or stressed hosts...Chris Wilson joins the guests at a dinner party with a difference.

O

ne nut allergy, two people who don’t eat meat, and one more picky so-and-so who is allergic to shellfish and will eat fish at a push but isn’t too keen... it sounds like a recipe for the dinner party from hell, but it’s just your average suburban gathering for eight people. Even if the hosts can put a menu together and feed everyone, it is likely to be a gruelling experience that sucks all the joy out of what should be one of life’s great pleasures... having a few friends round for a bite to eat. The hosts will most likely spend all day shopping and preparing, and all night cooking and plating up, leaving their friends to their own devices. When the last guest leaves, the poor exhausted saps will be left to ponder over a mountain of washing up... why do we bother? It’s a common problem, but a solution could be close at hand. La Belle Assiette – which translates as ‘the beautiful plate’ – is a company that specialises in making every home dinner party as enjoyable and stressfree for the hosts as it is for the guests. How do they do it? Quite simply, they send a professional chef into your home to do all the hard work, cooking and presenting restaurant-standard food. Tell them how many people are coming, whether any of your guests have any special dietary requirements, and they will do the rest. They even wash up

WESTSIDE 122

assured me he could rustle up a dinner party virtually anywhere. “If all you have is a single gas ring, I can cope,” he said. “I Frankie bring the ingredients and my gets to work in the own knives, but I will use kitchen for whatever pots, pans and plates Westside you have. Just show me where managing director things are and leave me to it. Martin “There has been increasing Edwards and his wife, demand for this sort of thing in Jane the last few years. People seem to feel more relaxed if they can have the fine dining experience and leave your kitchen as spotless as they in the comfort of their own homes.” found it. As for those pesky diners with their very Too good to be true? Westside managing specific dining requirements, had putting a director Martin Edwards and his wife Jane menu together been a headache? “Not at all. put it to the test, and early one Friday I’m just making a few adjustments so evening Nigel ‘Frankie’ Franklish knocked on everyone gets what they want – and nobody their front door, looking immaculate in chef’s gets poisoned!” whites. He sounded confident, so I rejoined the Now, as it happens, Martin and Jane have party where our hosts were revelling in the a rather nice kitchen, with a large cooking freedom of having nothing to do but top up range and plenty of work space, but Frankie our glasses and join in the conversation.

‘This is the most stress-free dinner party we have ever held. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and we’ve never had so much time to talk to our guests... and it is lovely to know we can go to bed without having to think about the washing up.’ Soon Frankie was in our midst, bearing platters of smoked salmon and black pudding canapés, bread and olives. No standing on ceremony, the diners dived in and declared them very moreish. So far, so good. Then it was time to be summoned for dinner. Frankie had set the table and devised a first course that everyone could enjoy – a simple combination of wild mushrooms on crostini that was beautifully presented and packed with flavour. Our hosts clearly enjoyed being waited on in their own home. As it happens, Martin enjoys the challenge of matching wine with food, but La Belle Assiette will take care of that too, if required. The main course required some lateral thinking by Frankie. There was pan-fried salmon for the fish eaters, chicken breasts for the abstainers, and the Thai-inspired salad was tweaked to remove the peanuts so our allergy sufferer did not have to grab for the EpiPen. With colourful salads, salsa and rice, we were obviously in the hands of a talented chef whose charming, low key style disguised

a hard-edged professionalism. If there was any stress in cooking such splendid food to order, it was not showing. A deconstructed cookie and cream cheesecake was a definite crowd-pleaser to round things off and, as Frankie gathered up his knives and disappeared into the night (having washed, dried and put away all the dishes, of course), Martin and Jane gave their verdict. “This is the most stress-free dinner party we have ever held. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and we’ve never had so much time to talk to our guests... and it is lovely to know we can go to bed without having to think about the washing up.”

WS In Brief

Sister hosts 20th charity fashion show

Wilfrid Bear with Elizabeth Goodfellow and other Westbourne pupils

Westbourne pupil designs charity mascot Sheffield charity St Wilfrid’s Centre has a new mascot thanks to pupils at Westbourne School, which chose the centre as its charity of the year for the 2014/15 academic year. To mark the partnership, pupils were invited to come up with designs for a new mascot, with the winning entry – Wilfrid Bear – provided by eight-year-old Elizabeth Goodfellow. St Wilfrid’s Centre director Kevin Bradley visited the school to receive a cheque for £2,771.04, the result of a full

year of fundraising by Westbourne children. St Wilfrid’s Centre on Queen’s Road is open to all vulnerable adults aged between 18 and 65 years old.The charity welcomes clients with mental health issues and learning disabilities as well as those recovering from addictions, or those who are finding it difficult to cope generally and are socially excluded. A successful year for Isobel Isobel Elston, the daughter of Langsett Cycles’ Andy Elston, is a member of the DanceDaze Dance School in Dronfield. For the last four years, Isobel has danced in a crew called The Business, a group of nine girls aged between 13 and 16. They have more than 160 solo/duo trophies between them after competing in many regional events. Each year they have qualified for the World Street Dance Championships in Glasgow and have finished in fourth place, despite moving up into more advanced categories. This year, they were moved up to the top under-18 advance category, which made their fourth place even more impressive. Last year, aged 13, Isobel and her close friend Ellie-Rose Pickering also entered the World under 14 intermediate duos category and finished in first place. The girls had to train even harder this year in order to defend their world title in the higher under-16 category. Their hard work paid off as they were again crowned world champions.

Ecclesfield Road fashion boutique Sister is hosting an autumn charity fashion show for the 20th year running. This successful event supports a different local charity every year and showcases the latest trends for the upcoming season. This year all funds raised will be donated to Cavendish Cancer Care. On Wednesday 11 November at 1pm and 7pm, six models will take to the catwalk in outfits from Sister’s latest winter collections including high-end designers Riani, D.Éxterior, Luisa Cerano, Bernshaw, Marc Cain, Caractere, Michael Kors handbags and Alpe premium boots. Victoria Wood, for Cavendish Cancer Care, said: “As a small, independent charity we rely on the generous support of local people and businesses to keep our doors open. Without businesses like Sister offering their support, we simply couldn’t support the 1,500 families that we see every year who are affected by cancer. We’re thrilled that Sister have chosen to raise money for us and look forward to the day.” Guests need to register their interest for the event by email at admin@sisteronline.co.uk or by telephone on 01142671330 for their names to be put on the guest list. The event is £5, which can be paid over the phone or on the day. There will be 15 per cent off selected lines all day, a free gift on purchases over £100, a raffle with fantastic prizes from the designers, and a drink on arrival.

Wine tasting dinner at our restaurant of the year On Thursday 3 December, the Samuel Fox Country Inn in Bradwell, Hope Valley, in collaboration with local wine specialists Austin’s Group, is presenting a wine tasting dinner. James Duckett, chef/proprietor of the Samuel Fox, winner of the 2015 Westside Restaurant of the Year award, has put together a mouth-watering five course menu, including such tasty treats as seared scallop in a spicy crab bisque with lemon

grass and liquorice, and rare roasted venison loin with charred radicchio, beetroot curd and hazelnuts. For each of the five courses, Austin’s and their Master of Wine, David Bird, have selected a different wine that complements and enhances each dish. During the evening, David will introduce each wine, its origins and distinct characteristics, and he and his Austin’s colleagues will be on hand to

expand on how the wines match James’s dishes. The dinner, inclusive of wine, is just £59 per head and there are optional minibus services from both Sheffield and Chesterfield with selected pick up and drop off points en route for an additional £10 per head. For those wishing to make the evening extra special, James is offering bed and breakfast at the Samuel Fox for the special rate of £50 per head based on two persons sharing a double room. To reserve places please call the Samuel Fox on 01433 621562.

T

hey come to study and just can’t bear to leave – over the years thousands of people have adopted Sheffield as a permanent home after deciding three years at university wasn’t nearly enough. That was certainly the case with Enrique, the charismatic guiding light behind Primoz, the latest venue on Broomhill’s vibrant café and restaurant scene. After his family emigrated from Colombia to London, Enrique enrolled at Sheffield Hallam to study film and media. Political theatre was his passion, but his fascination for restaurants was sparked when he worked as a waiter to help with tuition fees. Now firmly settled in the city with wife and children, he has a new dream – to bring a taste of South American cuisine to Sheffield. With his Venezuelan cousin in the kitchen it’s a real family affair (Primoz means cousins in Colombian), and first impressions are overwhelmingly positive. With pristine white and orange walls, pale wooden tables and that oh-so-trendy industrial-style lighting, it’s hard to believe this shiny new venue was for many years a rather dark and dingy African diner. This is most definitely a new beginning. If you haven’t much experience of Latin-style food the menu won’t be too disorientating; Enrique says he is starting gently, with the aim of evolving the menu and introducing more traditional South American dishes in the coming months. Our starters were made for sharing and a fine indication of what’s on offer – deep fried stuffed jalapenos, and a combination of chorizo

and king prawns cooked in white wine. Both dishes were savoury, delicious and packed with herbs and spices. No knockout heat though – testing the diner with blasts of chilli is not part of the culture. When it came to main courses, one dish jumped out of the menu just for being a little different. Bandeja paisa is a bit of an epic with black beans, shredded beef, fried pork belly, rice, fried plantain, arepitas (a Colombian patty made with cornflour), chorizo and avocado, topped with a fried egg. What a combination, and it all hung together beautifully. There was more full-on flavour in our other main, a generous stack of tender grilled lamb chops, marinated in piri piri. No standing on ceremony here, there came a point when the knife had to be dispensed with and it was time to pick up the bones and chew, extracting every last morsel of piri piri-infused flavour. More napkins please! For desserts we sampled one dish soon to be added to the menu. Quesillo is a Colombian take on cheesecake. It seemed to be a cross between a crème brûlée and a custard tart, lovely if you want something light and slightly sweet to finish. Churros, the fried dough pastry popular in Spain as well as many Latin American countries, were light, crisp, slightly salty and just perfect with a chocolate dipping sauce. Primoz is open from 11am, serving coffee, breakfast and light lunches during the day and dinner at night. With very friendly service, an upbeat, buzzing atmosphere, and the promise of new South American dishes to come, it’s a welcome addition to Broomhill’s increasingly cosmopolitan dining scene.

Lamborghini’s Huracan blows its top From supercars to family saloons… the latest motoring news with Jordan Cutforth

Good news for all Premiership footballers, Lamborghini has finally released a convertible version of the Huracan – itself replacing the Gallardo, the most popular model in the car maker’s history. With its first public outing at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the Huracan Spyder will be powered by the same 602hp 5.2-litre V10 engine as found in the coupe. This means a 201mph top speed and a 0-62mph sprint time of 3.4 seconds. The soft-top roof can be lowered in 17 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph. As with the coupe, it’ll come with four-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Expect a starting price of around £190,000 when the car arrives in showrooms next year.

Join the club

Porsche goes strictly turbo

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Golf GTI,Volkswagen has produced a stand-alone special edition. Dubbed the GTI Clubsport, it comes with a different exterior design and some improved power statistics. With a more prominent front bumper design, new side sills, a redesigned rear diffuser and a multi-part roof spoiler, the Clubsport certainly stands out from the rest of the VW group’s range with its very aggressive appearance. These alterations also provide meaningful downforce so it should handle crisper too. Power from the 2.0-litre turbo unit has been increased to 261hp or to 286hp on full throttle acceleration. 60mph comes in 6.0 seconds for the manual car or 5.9 seconds with the DSG auto ‘box. Consumption stats are 40.9mpg (160g/km) and 42.2 mpg (155g/km) respectively

The big news is that the Porsche 911 will no longer have naturallyaspirated engines. Instead, they’ll all be turbocharged. This is for efficiency reasons and one which was ultimately going to happen at some point. Fear not though; power has increased by around 20hp and the straight-six scream synonymous of the high-revving naturallyaspirated engines hasn’t been affected. All 911 Carrera models now come with 3.0-litre units. The Carrera produces figures of 370hp and 332 lb ft of torque. The Carrera S produces 420hp and 369lb ft. The quickest 0-62mph times are 4.2 seconds and 3.9 seconds respectively. The 911 can now achieve up to 38.2mpg on the combined cycle and emits just 169g/km of CO2. Prices start from £76,412. Launches in December.

Setting the pace Revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Jaguar F-Pace looks to take the crown from the Porsche Macan for top honours in the medium-sized luxury SUV marketplace. Not only does it take heavy inspiration from the F-Type sports car in terms of its pleasingly eye-catching appearance, but its interior rivals that found in the most luxurious of SUVs, including Volvo’s XC90 and BMW’s X5. It will be powered by a 178hp 2.0-litre diesel, a 296hp 3.0-litre diesel or a 375hp 3.0-litre supercharged V6 petrol unit. Models with the 2.0-litre diesel can be rear or four-wheel drive and come with six-speed manual transmissions. The rest come with Jaguar’s excellent and well-proven XF automatic transmission and all-wheel drive platforms. Prices start from £34,170. Available to order now.
