PROMOTION
ne of Sheffield’s most successful and long-standing businesses celebrates its 40th anniversary in December, and in typically low-key style there are no plans for big parties or celebrations. David J. Martin Joinery Ltd has been creating stunning bespoke furniture, primarily for kitchens but also for bedrooms, studies and lounges, from the same business base on Springvale Road, Walkley since 1980. Forty years is a significant landmark for any business but David intends to observe this special achievement simply by extending the workshop to accommodate a few more machines. There will be a revamp of the showroom too. Sounds a bit dull? If you’re looking for a wild party, maybe so. But for the steady stream of satisfied customers who have been won over by David’s obsession with doing every job to the highest possible standards it will come as no surprise. “I’m doing what I always wanted to do since I was at school,” says David, a carpenter by trade who studied for many years, starting with a City and Guilds in joinery and finishing up with a degree in his chosen subject. “I loved joinery and technical drawing and still get a lot of satisfaction from seeing a job through from start to finish.” Kitchens account for most of the work being done by David and his eightstrong team who are all highly trained and at the top of their game. Everything – and that does mean every single thing – is made from scratch with kitchens painstakingly designed to the last millimetre to suit the size and style of the home and meet the requirements of the customer. Every piece of wood is sanded in house, every colour is mixed and sprayed by the company’s own full time professional paint sprayer, and every sharp corner is rounded off by hand. “There’s no such thing as a typical David J Martin kitchen,” says David. “The fact that we make everything means the customer can have whatever they want. Everyone has a different view as to how a kitchen works, so a large part of my job is talking it through with them and finding out exactly what they would like.” One recent trend is for a kitchen that doubles as a space for dining and socialising. “Even if they don’t do a lot of cooking, people want an island unit that family and friends can gather around,” says David.
O
“We often find ourselves working in some very nice houses where the original kitchen was quite small, it was simply a place to prepare food in. So we are not just planning on where to put the new kitchen, we are also knocking down walls.” When this happens David J Martin, who is a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen, can provide a one-stop shop for structural, plumbing and electricity work as well as building furniture. The Shaker style of kitchen – not fussy, uncluttered, beautiful clean lines and an orderly approach – is finding favour with an increasing number of clients. And while it may seem at first glance that this streamlined style lends itself to mass production, David’s refusal to compromise on quality is finding favour with discerning clients who appreciate first class workmanship and a product that will truly stand the test of time. “If any of my lads consults me on how to do things there’s usually a quick way and a slow way – and the slow way is usually better, so that’s what we do. We don’t cut corners.” It generally takes three to four months from consultation to completion to finish a kitchen including six weeks to make and three to five weeks to fit, depending
on the amount of building work involved. David says: “Because we work as a team – plasterers, electricians, plumbers and fitters – everyone is lined up to come in and work as and when we need them. There is no delay and disruption for the customer is always kept to a minimum.” It’s at the design stage that David’s technical drawing skills come into their own as he prefers to show customers his own line drawings rather than using a CAD (computer aided design) machine. “Hand-drawn plans alongside photos of what we are starting from show a much truer depiction of what we are going to do and clients who are ordering a bespoke kitchen like it.” Looking to the future, David’s son Richard has worked for the company for 12 years and is now an integral part of the team, and with grandson Oliver the latest addition to the family, who’s to say this family business won’t still be going strong in another 40 years. Maybe then they’ll throw a party! David J. Martin Joinery Ltd 210 Springvale Road, Walkley Sheffield. S6 3NU Tel: 0114 268 6718 www.david-j-martin.co.uk

dave stone design The difference is in the detail.
Bespoke kitchen and bedroom design and project management “Over the moon!” We contacted Dave Stone Design with a view to designing and creating a stunning contemporary kitchen in our new home. Our design requirements were quite challenging, as the kitchen needed to be wheelchair-accessible, have abundant storage, utilise the space to optimum effect and be designed ‘off plan’ as the house was still very much in the construction. The designers at Dave Stone Design produced some computer-aided visuals in line with our high expectations helping us conjure up a picture of their ideas. Their vision, which would become a reality to a stunning effect, was to have a gorgeous island kitchen with a beautiful white starlight quartz worktop. There was to be a induction hob, a ‘down draft’ extractor, rising out of the granite ‘pop up’ sockets, mood-changing LED back lights, a ‘champagne’ sink, handleless units, ‘big pan’ drawers, integrated fridge, freezer, ovens and microwave, and a boiling water tap. Our kitchen was exactly how we had dreamed it would be. Dan project-managed the entire operation on site and ensured that everything was smooth running - from design right through to completion. The installation team were meticulous, and their attention to detail was exceptional. We are completely ‘over the moon’. 360 CHATSWORTH ROAD, CHESTERFIELD S40 2BY TELEPHONE 01246 200678 MOBILE 07737 984649. www.DaveStoneDesign.com Dan@DaveStoneDesign.com Find us on Facebook & Instagram

CARE HOME FIRST IN SHEFFIELD TO INSTALL ‘LIFE-ENHANCING’ TOUCHSCREEN TABLE FOR RESIDENTS. Sheffield care home has become the first in the city to install a ‘life-enhancing’ interactive touchscreen table for its residents. The Porterbrook, which offers residential, dementia, and respite care in Crosspool, has invested on the new technology in order to enhance engagement for residents. The £5,000-valued Sharp Interactive Touchscreen Table offers everything from web browsing to tailored dementiafriendly apps and can be used by multiple users at once. The table has been built bespoke with residents at The Porterbrook in mind and features specially adapted technology. The table uses ‘RemindMecare’ software which caters specifically for older people, including residents with dementia, learning disabilities or cognitive impairment. The table is easily moved, adjusts to suit the user’s seating position and can be used anywhere around The Porterbrook to enhance the wellbeing of its 44 residents. It provides apps which enable access to web browsing, gaming, quizzes, singalongs, Netflix and health and wellbeing opportunities such as chair yoga and sensory apps to benefit those with dementia. Mental stimulation is often considered to be one of the ways in which the elderly can guard against developing Alzheimer’s and dementia developing. In addition, the benefits of using the technology offered by the touchscreen table can enable video calls using Skype to help residents to interact with loved ones and maintain contact with friends who may be less able to visit.
A
The Porterbrook residents can have their own individual folders if they wish, all privately accessed, within which to store family photos and memories which can help aid their memory as needed. The Porterbrook care home manager Sheilagh Sweeney said: “With a rise in awareness of the loneliness and isolation that can be felt by some elderly people in care homes, The Porterbrook is keen to ensure offers the best quality of life to each and every one of our residents. “It is so important to us to seek new ways to keep our residents engaged. So far, the response to the table has been wonderful, the residents are genuinely thrilled to be able to explore the various apps it has to offer.” For more information call Sheilagh on 0114 266 0808, email info@theporterbrookcare.com or visit www.theporterbrookcare.com

Westbourne School Westbourne School, Sheffield’s only nonselective co-educational independent school for children aged three to 16, is embarking on a major £2million Junior School redevelopment project. Work is set to begin on the development of a large two-storey construction comprising of a hall, gymnasium and three classrooms. This major investment reflects the confidence generated by the school’s success and the ever-increasing number of children wanting to join Westbourne School. The development will create additional appeal adding to the already popular Forest School area for outdoor learning and development. By utilising the whole leafy campus in the centre of Broomhill, Westbourne allows more children to access new skills at the same time as developing teamwork, perseverance and resilience. Outdoor lessons are based in The Dell – a stimulating location that encourages the imagination at any time of the year. Westbourne does not have an entrance exam – pupils are accepted on their own merit, with a focus on individualised learning, offering every child the opportunity to excel and to be the best that they can be. 60 Westbourne Road, Sheffield S10 2QT Tel: 0114 266 0374 www.westbourneschool.co.uk

I would recommend Hallamshire Physiotherapy for all of these reasons – my husband’s progress has been amazing, much of which I put down to Karen.” – Mr & Mrs M “As a result of a car crash I got whiplash which gave me pins and needles down my arm. Over a series of appointments Steve has managed to cure the pins and needles and my neck is now free again. I can’t thank him enough. Kumon
Lokanta Lokanta celebrates ten years in Broomhill this year. Husband and wife team Faruk and Ruth Günay opened their Turkish restaurant in December 2009 when they returned from the Turkish Mediterranean coast to Ruth’s home city with their young family. They have kept to their original formula of meze and main courses with everything made in-house including the now famous bread. Diners can choose to eat entirely from small plates or they can go for a meze dish to start followed by mains including grilled sea bass, best quality lamb or one of the selection of vegetarian or vegan options. Wine is proudly Turkish with some very popular bottles.
Kumon offers individualised maths and English study programmes which are tailored to your child’s age and ability. Established for over 60 years, the Kumon programmes enable children to develop their study skills and confidently tackle advanced work. Instructor Rita Rughani said: “I have been a Kumon Instructor for nearly 14 years and have supported many students during this time, including through their GCSEs and beyond. I am proud to see our students going on to achieve places at top universities including Oxford and Cambridge and many of our students have completed the Maths and English programme in full. The start of a life-changing journey THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE PARENTS TODAY THANKS TO JESSOP FERTILITY – WHO HAVE BEEN HELPING PATIENTS ACHIEVE THEIR DREAM OF BECOMING A FAMILY FOR THE LAST 18 YEARS. eading the way for South Yorkshire and part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which is one of the largest and busiest teaching hospitals in the country, the state-of-the-art Assisted Conception Unit opened in 2001; offering access to the very latest in IVF and fertility innovation, provided by an expert fertility team who have a track record of excellent success rates. A patient-centred approach to each fertility journey, together with an outstanding reputation for patient care, has led to Jessop Fertility becoming one of the most trusted fertility units in the region. The private entrance and reception area and the consulting and treatment rooms have been carefully created and designed to provide couples and individuals with the highest levels of care, in a supportive, relaxed and confidential stress-free environment. “We understand how important this journey is and want to be there for you every step of the way,” says Jonathan Skull, Clinical Lead at Jessop Fertility. “At Jessop Fertility, we ensure that every patient receives personalised care and support throughout the entire fertility process and is treated with sensitivity and compassion during what can be an extremely emotionally demanding experience.” Fertility treatment can be the start of a life-changing journey. The expert team at Jessop Fertility are here to give you all the support you need during treatment. onwards,” says councillor, Suzanne Dark. Jessop’s specialist counselling service offers individual and couple sessions to support emotional well-being and to make decisions about the most appropriate fertility treatments, if needed. Counselling appointments are available at no additional cost, six days a week with Jessop’s two highly experienced specialist accredited fertility councillors, who are on hand to listen with understanding and empathy, in confidence and in private. “It is all about you, your journey and the help you need to have a baby. Our caring approach is why so many people trust us to support them on their fertility journey. We are dedicated to making sure that your experience is the best it can be and have over the years, developed a comprehensive range of services designed to support you at every stage of your fertility treatment.” IVF innovation has rapidly advanced in recent years and Jessop Fertility has remained at the forefront of these developments, helping to pioneer ever more effective treatments. With excellent recent success rates, they specialise in individualised IVF treatment that is unique to you, focused on achieving a healthy pregnancy and baby. One of the most important recent developments has been the introduction of state-of-the-art time-lapse incubators, which enables embryos to be placed in an incubator where their development is uninterrupted and can be monitored closely; allowing scientists to select the embryo that has the best chance of achieving a pregnancy. Whether you are receiving IVF through the NHS or are funding it yourself, all treatments at Jessop Fertility include time lapse technology, embryo glue and early pregnancy monitoring at no additional cost. As well as IVF, Jessop Fertility offers a full range of fertility treatments,
including a comprehensive range of assisted conception techniques, such as Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) and treatments involving donor sperm and eggs. The unit launched a Pre Implantation Genetic Testing (PGT) service in 2018, which involves the careful removal of cells from the outside of an embryo, to check that it has the correct number of chromosomes, and also offer a Pre Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) service for couples who are at risk of having a child with a genetic condition. No matter what type of treatment or fertility service you need, it is always tailored to you, your diagnosis and your wellbeing and explained simply and clearly by your consultant. Want to know more about the fertility process? Got any questions about infertility? If you are considering fertility treatment, you’re bound to have lots of questions. Jessop Fertility’s monthly open afternoons [Saturday 3-5pm] provide an opportunity to have a good look around the clinic, talk about your fertility journey, get advice on the range of treatments available and meet the fertility team. Or if you prefer, you can book an informal one-to-one visit. If you would like to find out more about Jessop Fertility or to book a place at one of the upcoming Jessop Fertility open afternoons, call 0114 226 8050 or visit www.jessopfertility.org.uk. Patient Testimonial “The staff at Jessop Fertility really were excellent, they listened to our concerns at every stage and worked to help us feel reassured. It might feel like the odds for a successful IVF pregnancy aren’t high enough to risk going through the emotional rollercoaster of treatment, but it is absolutely worth it when you get that positive result. Thankfully, our dreams came true in the form of our gorgeous little girl, Joy, who was born in February 2018 – we love her so much.” www.sheffieldvibe.com 73

‘Street Fight’ ‘Beer Store on Bramall Lane’
In a career spanning almost 60 years, Joe Scarborough has made the journey from jobbing painter selling his 20x24-inch (“The right size to fit on a council house chimney breast”) depictions of northern life, for a fiver, to international recognition as one of England’s foremost and best-loved artists. His works now command prices of many thousands of pounds and adorn the walls of private homes and galleries and museums around the world. His colourful, bold and gloriously unique style continues to delight young and old alike and every age in between. In his own words he is, “an entertainer, a showman, a director of my ensemble cast, and that cast is you”.

You can also view almost 60 of Joes original works from the last 60 years at the major retrospective, Life In The Big Village, at the Weston Park Museum, Sheffield, running until 24 November.
A LIFE IN ART Joe estimates he has completed around 800 oil on canvas paintings. Sadly many of these will no longer exist but since launching an appeal earlier in the year to locate the ‘Lost Joes’ we have catalogued and certified almost 200 leaving many more unaccounted for. If you own a Joe Scarborough and would like it authenticated, valued and certified by Joe himself, please contact us at: www.joescarboroughart.co.uk or call Steve Eyre, Joe’s authentication expert, on 07850 012686 (this is a free complimentary service). Joe’s website is the home of his original art for sale as well as signed limited edition prints, box canvases and merchandise. Please help us fill in the gaps from a wonderful and continuing career.

Be pleasantly surprised IF YOU’RE HAVING A CLEAR-OUT, DON’T BE QUICK TO THROW YOUR OLD JEWELLERY AWAY – IT MAY HAVE SOME WORTH. SPEAK TO THE EXPERTS AT PA JEWELLERY. any of us accumulate pieces of jewellery over the years; birthday gifts, family heirlooms, holiday souvenirs. When having a clear out it is not unusual to discover odd earrings, broken chains or pieces you no longer wear hiding in your jewellery box. Although these may seem like ‘rubbish’ you may be surprised to learn how much they are worth, so it is worth checking with a jeweller before throwing them away. Even broken bits of silver, gold, platinum or palladium will have some value, and if you are not sure what your jewellery is made from then ask; our customers are often pleasantly surprised. There are then several things you may be able to do…
M
Remodel We can often re-use your precious metal or gemstones, making them into a new piece of jewellery, a popular option with those who have inherited jewellery or have sentimental pieces that have worn out over time. This could mean setting a treasured diamond into a new mount or melting some family gold to create a wedding 90 www.sheffieldvibe.com
band with a personal touch. Our jewellers can advise you on what is possible and work with you on design ideas. In addition to being a fantastic way of maintaining sentiment this can often (although not always) save you money when compared to the cost of buying a similar piece.
Part exchange Sometimes you might want a new watch or a piece of jewellery that can’t be made using your existing materials. In this instance you might choose to part exchange your old jewellery or watch against the cost of the new. You will normally receive a higher offer for your items if you do this so if you are thinking of buying something it is worth
considering. Even if you are not sure what you want yet, we can put your part exchange value on a gift card to spend with us later.
Sell for cash If you aren’t looking for anything new you can still sell your unwanted jewellery for cash. You may be surprised by how much it is worth and this option gives you the chance to turn items you no longer use into cash to treat yourself (or a friend!). We may pay more for pieces we can re-sell as second-hand items, although considerations such as condition and style will be important. You don’t need an appointment to enquire about selling, part-exchanging or remodelling your jewellery; we are always happy to look at your pieces. In most cases we can offer immediate advice, and should you choose to sell, immediate payment. PA Jewellery The Old Bank, Commonside, Sheffield, S10 1GD Tel: 0114 266 9253 www.pajewellery.com

Night Strider – supported by Gripple and Pricecheck – is the biggest and most colourful St Luke’s Hospice fundraiser of the year. And as the fifth annual nocturnal half marathon and 10k walking challenge got under way, around a thousand walkers – and even a few pets – were on the starting line, all eager to take up the challenge and make a difference to the lives of St Luke’s patients and their families. Their enthusiasm, not to mention their neon tutus, crazy wigs and glow in the dark accessories, added a rainbow of colour as the autumn darkness descended upon Sheffield.

Seeing a solicitor TAKE A PROACTIVE APPROACH AND VISIT ROSALIND WATCHORN. t can be really hard to find the motivation to see a solicitor unless you have urgent need. It’s one of those things people put off doing. We see people every week who say that they have been intending to do it for years. The record was a lady who at 96 told us that she had been meaning to make her will since she had got married 70 years previously; is that tempting fate? Most people go and see a solicitor only when they have to – whether it is after an accident, a divorce or moving house. It is far harder to pick up the phone if you just want to find out about something that might happen in the future. You might be worried about the cost of making a will, drawing up Powers of Attorney if in future you decline mentally or you are worried about what might happen if you go into a care home. You may have a homemade will but think it is time to get something properly drawn up. Not all solicitors are as you may imagine. Our team are focused on listening and helping people make decisions about their future needs. It’s just a quick call to arrange an

‘Meal ticket’ off the menu? IS ENGLAND STILL THE DIVORCE CAPITAL OF THE WORLD? ASKS SOLICITOR NICOLA CANCELLARA OF GRAYSONS SOLICITORS. t’s no wonder that separating couples choose to divorce in the UK. London’s court has always had the reputation for awarding generous divorce settlements. But is this still the case? More recently, judges appear to have been moving to limit one type of financial award that has been referred to by some as a “meal ticket for life” – maintenance orders. Maintenance orders differ throughout Europe. In the UK, for example, it is usual to award open-ended spousal maintenance orders. In Scotland, where there is a different legal system, maintenance is only payable for three years after divorce. In France, the maintenance period lasts for eight years and in Norway and Greece it is usually three years. English law says wealth should be split equally between divorcing couples – even where one party is the main breadwinner – but are judges now expecting the financially weaker spouse to eventually go out to work and become financially independent? This is what the Supreme Court appeared to signal in June 2018 in the case of ‘Mills v Mills – The Supreme Court [2018] UKSC 38’, which indicated the court was against increasing joint lives payments. The court ruled in favour of Graham Mills, who argued that he should not have to increase life-long monthly maintenance payments to his former wife who had used her 2002 divorce settlement to make unwise property investments. Judges can use their discretion when deciding what they should award by way of financial orders. In doing so, they need to consider the following factors contained in section 25 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973:
I
• The income, earning capacity, property and other resources which each spouse has or is likely to have in the foreseeable future. • The financial needs, obligations and 104 www.sheffieldvibe.com
• • • •
• •
responsibilities which each spouse has or is likely to have in the foreseeable future. The standard of living enjoyed during the course of the marriage. The parties’ ages and the length of the marriage. Any physical or mental disability of either spouse. The contributions that each spouse has made or is likely to make in the foreseeable future towards the welfare of the family. The parties’ conduct. The financial needs of any child.
The court will regard these factors equally and this, along with a judge’s discretion, often makes it difficult for family solicitors to estimate what a financial settlement will be. This is why it is preferable to try to negotiate a settlement between yourselves, rather than have a judge make the decision for you. There have been calls for changes to the act so as to provide greater legal certainty and reduce the reliance on judicial discretion for maintenance orders. There are points in favour and against. For example, in a statement made in 2018, the Ministry of Justice
said: “We are considering the evidence for reform to financial provision, making sure any proposals would not undermine protection for vulnerable spouses”. Remember it is always best to try and resolve finances by communicating with your spouse. If not, the court will impose an order which may not be what you want. HEROES
Proving them wrong DODDIE WEIR IS THE INSPIRATION FOR A SPECIAL FUND-RAISING DINNER IN SHEFFIELD. HE TALKS TO CHRIS WILSON ABOUT LIVING WITH – AND FIGHTING AGAINST – MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE. hen former Scotland rugby international Doddie Weir trapped his hand in a door a few years back he barely flinched. This 6ft 6ins man mountain, who played for his country 61 times between 1990 and 2000 and also represented the British Lions in 1997, was a tough lock forward whose body had withstood fearsome punishment at the highest level in a tough, bruising sport. “I thought I’d maybe broken a bone in the hand but would be OK in a few days, I’m an old rugby boy and a farmer so I don’t make a fuss. But in a couple of months the symptoms were still there and the loss of power was getting worse,” he recalls. “I also noticed that my skin was twitching. Now I know that when you put those symptoms together you come out with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).” There is no current cure for MND and while there are exceptions – including the physicist Stephen Hawking – about half of sufferers die within three years of developing symptoms. When Doddie, 49, was officially diagnosed with MND he was told by his doctor that within 12 months he’d be visiting the surgery in a wheelchair. Three years on he’s still walking, and still driving tractors and working on his smallholding in the Scottish Borders. His energy levels may have been depleted but he has an inner drive to keep active for as long as possible, to fight the illness every step of the way and to relish every extra second in the company of his wife Kathy and three sons – Angus, Hamish and Ben. But most of all he is driven by anger at the lack of medical research and help available to anyone diagnosed with MND. “When I was told I had MND the worst part was not the news that I had this disease but when I was told what the support would be. That’s what I could not get my head around.
W

“My attitude was: let’s get it fixed, let’s get it sorted. I found out there is one drug that came out 25 years ago that would extend your life by a few months, apart from that nothing. “So anyone with MND, you’ve got no chance, no options. There’s nothing new at the table, no drugs to help. I was told my life expectancy was two to three
years, which is quite horrific. And some people who have been diagnosed only live three or four months, which is horrendous. “So I’ve proved them wrong to some extent but my drive and my determination is to make a little bit of a difference. “The journey thereafter has been the
HEROES
reason for what I am doing now with the foundation (My Name’5 Doddie Foundation).” Doddie believes one of the reasons there has been so little research in the last 25 years is the low number of people affected by MND – 500 in his home nation of Scotland out of a population of five million. “It is such a complex issue and there are such low numbers involved, that does not help because it is not financially viable for certain companies to get involved. “But it is a horrific way to end your life, dependant on so many people. It is a muscle wasting disease, your leg muscles disappear so you can’t walk, can’t move your arms and shoulders, you can’t eat, you can’t go to the toilet, eat or swallow, your diaphragm gives in so you can’t breathe. “You would have thought that would be enough for the Government and the NHS to offer more, and that’s been the driving force for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. If we can try and find help or a cure it gives people a chance. Because at the moment people have no chance.” Doddie’s plain speaking and determination not to give up hope has certainly struck a chord in the rugby world and beyond. “It’s overwhelming and humbling, the support I have received from individuals and organisations like Sheffield Rugby Club who have shown amazing enthusiasm for the cause. “I feel lucky, three years on from my diagnosis I am still able to get up and do most things, it has given me three years with my wife, my kids, my friends and the rugby community. Some people don’t have that, so in many ways I am fortunate that I can carry on fighting for a cure or a stoppage to MND… that’s my goal.” To find out more about the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation go to www.myname5doddie.co.uk
cotland and British Lions rugby legend Doddie Weir is the inspiration behind a fundraising dinner to be held at the Cutlers’ Hall, which highlights Sheffield’s position at the heart of a campaign to find a cure for MND (Motor Neurone Disease). Doddie was diagnosed with MND, which causes progressive damage to the nerves and muscle wastage, three years ago. His foundation – My Name’5 Doddie – has so far raised £4million for research into a cure and to provide grants for people living with the condition. It was a chance meeting with Sheffield Rugby Union Club’s chairman Andrew Langdale that led to Doddie coming to Sheffield on three occasions as a guest speaker to raise funds for the club in the days before he was diagnosed. And a further link to pioneering work being done at Sheffield University gives added significance to the dinner being held on 29 November with guest speakers Ian Robertson, the former Scottish international player and BBC commentator, and Kyran Bracken, exEngland scrum half and a member of the World Cup winning squad of 2003. Andrew explains: “You never forget when you first meet Doddie. I was at a Professional Rugby Association dinner in London sat on the same table and his enormous persona took over. “After my appointment as Chairman of Sheffield in 2010 I asked him if he’d do me a favour and come to a fundraising lunch as a guest speaker. Anyone who was in the room will remember it as a very special occasion, and one he was to repeat twice more. “Not only that but he did it for ‘mate’s
S
rates’ plus a magnum of what he calls my ‘posh wine’. “So now it’s our turn to do ‘mate’s rates’ back. Since his diagnosis Doddie has reacted as only Doddie could. He told me shortly afterwards that he had been given an opportunity to do something special with the last five years of his life. “That conversation still resonates with me. So to do our bit we as a club thought of a dinner to raise muchneeded funds for work in this area. “A huge coincidence followed whereby Doddie mentioned that Dame Professor Pamela Shaw was a Trustee of his charity but also was doing vital work in the field at her SITraN (Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience) unit at Sheffield University. I met Pam shortly after and she was convinced that there was a link between Motor Neurone Disease and elite athletes but as of yet there was no research into it. “We immediately agreed that the funds raised from this event should be used to finance this three-year project. Our main sponsors of the event, Wilson Field, have kindly agreed a three-year term so that we can plan with certainty and deliver our promise to Doddie and Pam.” Wilson Field will be funding a research scholarship – the Wilson Field Blue Rose Scholarship. Nick Wilson, managing director of Wilson Field, added: “Pam Shaw is doing some incredible work and we are delighted to be doing all we can to help the people who are researching ways to find a cure to this distressing illness.” The dinner is on Friday 29 November at the Cutlers’ Hall, Sheffield. There are still two out of 34 tables left at £700 plus VAT, contact a.langdale@btinternet if you are interested. www.sheffieldvibe.com 107
INTERVIEW
Party planner extraordinaire AWARD-WINNING EVENT PLANNER LIZ TAYLOR TELLS CHRIS WILSON THE SECRETS OF THROWING A SUCCESSFUL PARTY. tep into a wardrobe, fight your way past a rail of fur coats and stumble into a room that has been transformed into a Narnia-inspired winter wonderland. For a girl whose favourite book is The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe it’s an unforgettable beginning to a spectacularly successful 18th birthday. But for Liz Taylor, party organiser extraordinaire, it’s just another day at the office. Liz made a flying visit to Sheffield recently and gave a talk at Whirlowbrook Hall, Sheffield about the secrets of planning a successful festive event. With her sharp wit, down-to-earth advice and a stream of fascinating anecdotes she was judged to be a huge success. Whatever the occasion or budget, Liz insists the same simple rule applies. It’s attention to detail that makes any party successful. “It’s the atmosphere and the ambience that you create, with entertainment, great lighting, a well-stocked bar... leave nothing to chance. “Afterwards you don’t want people going home saying ‘that was a great piece of chicken’. You want them saying ‘Oh my God, the entertainment was mega’.” Liz works mainly for clients in the North West of England, although she has masterminded events as far afield as Istanbul, Marrakesh and New York. She’s organized major bashes for Manchester United, Liverpool FC and the cast of Coronation Street; if the occasion demands a big name she has the likes of Lulu, Gary Barlow and Jamie Cullum in her little black book. “They pick up the phone because they know me,” she says. “My contacts and my reputation for delivering what clients
S

want are hard-earned.” With the festive season just around the corner Liz has very firm ideas about what it takes to make your party a success. “At Christmas you have to create some theatre. Everyone wants a bit of glamour, that magic moment when your arms go up in the air. “For the Narnia party we had set designers building the wardrobe, there was that moment of wonder when you walked through the fur coats and into Narnia. By the time people reached the reception area there was a real sense of excitement and anticipation.” Liz specialises in high concept, big budget parties that often require very specific props and the work of a whole team of set designers. One circus-themed party had a vintage carousel built into the floor of the marquee with a rotating bar delivering drinks, such as vodka and tonic in a plastic bag complete with plastic goldfish. “All these little details we sit painstakingly thinking about. The more creative, the crazier, and the better the party will be.” Manchester-born Liz began in retail management at M&S, falling into her current profession by chance. “I’d had two children in the space of 14 months and was off work when a friend introduced me to the director of sales at the Midland Hotel and they wanted someone to arrange a Hollywood-themed night to promote the venue to PAs in the city. I said I’d do it because I was quite organized, and that led to another couple of projects.” Liz had found her forte and was on her way. More than 30 years on she is busier than ever; in one forthcoming weekend alone in the run-up to Christmas she is working on an Indian wedding for 1500 people in Cheshire, a
birthday party for 400 in Manchester and a large scale family wedding in Portugal...all taking place in the space of three days. “I can’t be at them all but I can multitask, and I have a great team around me,” she says. “And while we work internationally now I never underestimate the opportunities that have come in the North West post the IRA bomb.” It was in 1996 that the biggest bomb the IRA ever exploded on the British mainland destroyed the heart of Manchester. “The city changed hugely from that moment on, it reinvented itself, and that really was significant to my success.” With so many big scale projects on the go, you’d expect Liz’s workforce to run into the hundreds, but she only works full time as part of a close-knit team of five people. “The rest of my business is based around trusted suppliers who I have worked with since 1986.” Some of Liz’s clients are big corporate companies or wealthy individuals with cash to burn, but she insists you don’t need to throw huge sums of money at a party to make it go with a bang. “If you gave me £500 and wanted something to really knock people’s socks off, I’d build a tower of roses in a gold mosaic vase and stick it right in the middle of the reception room. It’s all about creating the wow factor - that’s what gets to people.” Make it £500,000 and we are in the realm of A-list celebs, and props that would not look out of place on a West End musical. Liz can make it happen but she has one secret... when she’s not working she’s a bit of a home bird who hates going to parties. “I’ll organise it for you, just leave me off the guest list.”

The Sloe Gin Mojito A festive twist on the Cuban classic, replacing rum with sloe gin and transforming the ordinary into something very special. To create this at home you will need: 50ml sloe gin 20ml lemon juice Teaspoon of brown sugar Handful of mint Quarter of a lemon, sliced Blueberries 1 bottle of lemon tonic water
Start this cocktail off by wrapping ice in a tea towel and giving it a good old beating with a rolling pin until you are left with crushed ice – unless your freezer is suitably stocked. In a tall glass, add brown sugar and lemon juice and using the end of said rolling pin, give it a muddle to mix. Once almost a syrup, add the sloe gin, lemon slices, mint and a handful of crushed ice and give it another mix. Top it up with ice to taste and add a splash of lemon tonic (we favour Franklin & Sons) to finish it off. Garnish with a sprig of mint and a handful of blueberries and enjoy.

COMEDY
“Laugh like an idiot” JACK WHITEHALL LIKES TO PUT ON A SHOW WITH A CAPITAL ‘S’. YOU BETTER GET READY SHEFFIELD, SAYS JAMES RAMPTON. n his live shows, Jack Whitehall likes to begin with a bang. Take the way he started the show on his last arena tour. “I love a big entrance,” the hugely popular comedian explains. “So last time I came on stage on a horse. In the first show, it did a sh*t on stage as soon as it came on. The audience were in absolute hysterics – especially as I had to clean it up before I could start the show. You can expect similarly brilliant comic moments from Whitehall’s new show, Stood Up, which is touring the UK and Ireland this autumn – his biggest such tour ever. Justly feted for his superb work on television, the comedian is, if anything, even more at home in the live arena. Whitehall is a dazzlingly funny stand-up. Often making himself the butt of his jokes, he generates wave upon wave of laughter in the auditorium. But be warned, he has a really loyal following, and his shows sell-out very rapidly – with many of the original dates already sold out. In person, he combines wit and warmth in the most magnetic fashion, and it is a sheer delight to spend an hour in his company. It is like being treated to a command performance – to an audience of one. Having been away from the stand-up arena for a while making hit movies and TV shows, Whitehall is very happy to be back doing what he adores above all else. Most recently seen in Lasse Hallstrom’s film, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, opposite Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freeman; alongside Rosie Perez in the second series of Sky One’s Bounty Hunters (which he co-wrote); in Amazon series Good Omens with Jon Hamm, David Tennant and Michael Sheen; and as the first-ever guest host of The Graham Norton

Show, the comedian outlines why standup gives him such a buzz. “I love the rapport you get with a live audience. It’s great that I’ve built an audience over the years. It’s very exciting that they know me and have seen the progression of my stand-up. They shout things out and that becomes part of the show.” Whitehall, who has also starred in such lauded TV shows as Decline & Fall, Fresh Meat, Bad Education, Backchat and A League of Their Own (which received a BAFTA Award in 2014 for Best Comedy Entertainment Programme), continues: “It’s great making film and TV and writing scripts. But often you wait months before it goes out. “There is something so appealing about being able to get up on stage in front of an audience and have a very authentic, instantaneous and organic experience with them. I love that element of stand-up. When you go away and do writing and acting, you miss that. You get the itch to return to stand-up. It’s a bug. I’d find it very hard ever to quit it. I’ll always come back to it. It’s my first love.” The other terrific aspect of Whitehall’s stand-up is that he thrives on creating a show with a capital S. He is always determined to give his audience wonderful value for money. The comedian, widely celebrated for the travelogue series, Travels With My Father, which returns to Netflix for a new series in September, observes that: “Doing an arena show, you have to make it feel like it belongs in an arena. So you have to do stuff that could only happen in an arena. I really like big production values. You want to put on a proper show in an arena. Musicians do it, so why shouldn’t comedians?” It is fair to say, however, that Whitehall’s production values do not always go according to plan. When they do go wrong, though, it simply adds to the hilarity of the evening. Remember the incontinent horse? The stand-up, who has hosted The BRIT Awards for the last two years, welcomes such

moments of unscripted comedy. “It’s great when something unexpected happens in the moment. My stage caught fire in Leeds once, and that suddenly became the show. I have pyrotechnics on stage because I always try to make my shows like a Beyonce gig. “But that night in Leeds the pyrotechnics went off in the wrong direction and part of the stage caught fire. The audience were laughing so hard because they thought it was part of the show. They didn’t know that something had gone seriously wrong and that I was in peril. But they were just laughing away, totally oblivious to that. “At first, I didn’t even realise what was going on because I had my back to the fire. Suddenly, the stage manager rushed on stage, grabbed me and dragged me off. I said, ‘What the hell is going on?’ He replied, ‘Look, the stage is on fire!’ It was all quite dramatic, but the audience really loved it.” Whitehall, who next year will be starring opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt in Disney blockbuster movie, Jungle Cruise, proceeds to reveal what subjects he will be addressing in Stood Up. “You’re always reflecting on what’s going on in your life. I’ve been travelling a lot with my dad recently, so I’ll be talking about going around the world with him.
“I’ll be discussing stuff about being in America, too, and how different I find that from the UK. I’ll also be talking about the sensitivity of the world at the moment and how it is very easy to cause offence and end up in trouble. Skirting that line can be very difficult.” Whitehall will, of course, also be dreaming up another grand entrance for Stood Up. “This show will definitely have some party tricks. In my first arena show, I came on stage on a Segway, and then the next time it was a horse. So God knows how I’m going to top that!” Finally, what does Whitehall hope that audiences will take away from Stood Up? “I love to make my shows really fun and silly. On stage I like to create a lot of joy and silliness, as I think the world is a depressing enough place as it is. I hope my show will be a fun distraction. I will be trying to get people beaming as they leave the auditorium at the end of the evening. “We are living in troubled times. Without wishing to give what I do any higher meaning, I think it’s really good to be distracted and laugh like an idiot for two hours.” Jack Whitehall is at FlyDSA Arena on 1 December.Tickets, priced £22.40-55.44 (including booking fee) are available online at www.flydsaarena.co.uk or via the credit card hotline on 0114 256 5656. www.sheffieldvibe.com 115

A wonderful day was had at the annual New Image Macmillan Coffee Morning. It was the perfect chance to catch up over a cuppa and a slice of something delicious for a great cause.
Blenheim’s Adrian Richardson took on the Sheffield 10k as a thank you for the care and treatment his daughter, Poppy Grace received at The Sheffield Children’s Hospital. The weather provided an extra challenge this year, however Adrian managed to get a personal best time of 48minutes and 32 seconds. “Poppy has been to the Children’s Hospital for two operations this year and all of the staff have been absolutely brilliant with her.”

The art of wood fired pizza Crafted from the finest natural ingredients
Our philosophy is “quality and taste delivered with excellence.” Our speciality dough is made daily and is hand stretched and left to mature for at least 72 hours, not only to ensure the best flavour but to also improve digestion. It is created using flour derived only from genuine Italian wheats. Our sauce is also made fresh daily using the finest San Marzano tomatoes, known for their ‘meatier’ flesh, their historical roots can be traced right back to 1770, when it is believed the first seeds were grown in volcanic soil under the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Much less acidic than most other varieties, they give both a sweet and sour taste on the palate. A sublime mozzarella made from cows’ milk, Fior di latte has superb elasticity giving a smooth yet tangy flavour,
which in our opinion is the perfect choice on which to base any ingredients. Zizzona offers an authentic, home-cooked Italian experience. Come on in and watch Chef Marco prepare your fresh pizza, then savour the smell as it rises and sizzles in our authentic wood-fired oven. Imported from Italy and installed by master craftsmen, our traditional mosaic tiled oven is what gives our pizzas that extra special Zizzona zing.

Home comforts YOU’LL FIND PUB CLASSICS AND MORE AT THE HYDE PARK INN, WRITES CHARLES BRADSHAW. uilt in the late 19th century, the Hyde Park Inn is located on the southern edge of Dronfield, opposite a playing field. The Inn has ample car parking spaces, an enclosed outdoor seating area and a large beer garden – a popular spot in the summer overlooking the Derbyshire countryside. Current owners Tom and Vee purchased the property five years ago and have built up a clientele of regular drinkers and diners. In addition to running the Inn (and tending to the outdoor gardens) the duo sponsor four local youth football teams and participate in the annual summer Beer Festival. We were warmly greeted on our visit one dark, cold and wet evening. Entering the Tardis-like venue, we were swiftly shown to our table and settled down to peruse the menu. A large selection of dishes are offered ranging from pub classics, snacks and plenty of vegetarian/vegan/gluten free options (with more planned for the future). The Inn was already busy with several family groups dining and many drinkers at the bar. Our waitress informed us of a 30-40
B

minute wait for food – which is understandable as the dishes were being made from scratch. I ordered homemade Beef Lasagne (£8.95) while my companion opted for Chicken and Chorizo Skewers (£7.95). Arriving well before the expected wait time, our food was neatly presented and piping hot. My layered lasagne portion was topped with melted cheese and accompanied by a side salad, subtly flavoured slices of garlic bread plus a serving of homemade coleslaw. It was a satisfyingly sized dish, baked just right with plenty of flavour. My companion’s Chicken and Chorizo Skewers were served on a bed of white rice with side salad (lettuce, tomato, red onion, sweetcorn, cucumber, beetroot) plus a dash of balsamic vinegar. The meaty pieces were thoroughly cooked and delicately char-grilled with a delicious smoky flavour. For dessert I had Sticky Toffee Pudding (£3.95); an individual light sponge, topped with a warm toffee syrup. My companion selected a slice of lattice Cherry Pie (£2.95). A satisfying serving of rich, warm fruit nestled between
shortcrust pastry. Both desserts included an individual jug of hot, creamy custard. We both concluded that the portion sizes were just right with an exceptional balance of flavours – just like home cooked food. The Hyde Park Inn is a welcoming venue for all ages (including four-legged animals) with an extensive food menu plus a well-stocked central bar with wines, spirits and local ales on tap. In addition to the food menu, speciality evenings are arranged during the week including an extremely popular Sunday Carvery. Divine inspiration ONE OF THE CITY’S MOST ICONIC BUILDINGS HOUSES A WELL-KEPT SECRET, WRITES SUE BRIFFA. IT’S TIME YOU FOUND OUT WHAT IT WAS. recently had an all-too-rare opportunity to catch up with my sister-in-law for lunch in Sheffield city centre. We wanted a ‘light bite’ but also to indulge our shared sweet tooth and have cake. I met her as she hopped off the tram outside Sheffield Cathedral and we headed straight for Café 1554, situated within the Cathedral directly across from the main door. Since opening its doors in June 2015, the café’s aim has been to bring people into the Cathedral who may otherwise have walked by. A wide selection of dishes with locally sourced ingredients are on offer, ranging from salads and sandwiches to jacket potatoes. On the specials board was a meat and potato pie with gravy plus Sheffield’s own ‘Hendo’s’ (£4.95). The café also offers afternoon tea at £12.95 per person (£25 per couple) with a ‘mini me’ version (£6.50) for the under 12s. We were welcomed by the delightful café assistant Matt, who helped us with our choices. I opted for the Soup of the Day, which was tomato and basil (£3.95). The soup arrived piping hot and had the noticeable home-made taste; the fleshy texture of the tomatoes matching
I

perfectly with the basil. It was served with a hearty portion of fresh brown bread and butter. My sister-in-law chose the cheese and onion pasty (£4.95) which is served with coleslaw and salad. However, after a discussion with Matt the sides were exchanged for a portion of the mixed savoury rice; a particular favourite of hers. The heated pasty was made with light and crisp pastry and the cheesy filling was delicious. The rice had a mixture of flavours including peppers, peas, onions, sultanas and turmeric. As much as we enjoyed our main course, it was now time for cake. We had both spotted the selection displayed and, whilst we were sufficiently full from the soup and pasty, we just couldn’t pass up the opportunity. My sister-in-law had the Coffee & Walnut Cake (£3.25) and was served a huge portion of the lightest sponge cake with the most divine buttermilk filling and topping. It was delicious and worthy of a ‘Hollywood Handshake’. I have always been a lover of fruit cake, having enjoyed both making and eating them since my schooldays. I therefore chose Mrs Wilson’s Sticky Fruitcake (£2.85).
Goodness me, it was one of the best fruitcakes I have ever tasted. So much so I asked the staff who Mrs Wilson was; I needed to meet her. However, it transpired she lived in the early 1900s, yet thankfully her legacy lives on. We completed our luncheon beak with a cup of Café 1554’s own blend of coffee, aptly named Heavenly Coffee. And it is. Heavenly, that is. Freshly brewed, it has a smooth taste with not a hint of bitterness. We then left Café 1544 to have a wander around one of Sheffield’s most iconic buildings, vowing to return very soon. And I urge you to do the same. You won’t regret it. Making its Marc CHRIS WILSON VISITS THE RESTAURANT-IN-A-HOTEL QUICKLY MAKING A NAME FOR ITSELF IN THE SHEFFIELD SUBURBS. he name carries a heightened sense of expectation. Marco Pierre White was the enfant terrible of the UK restaurant scene, the wonder kid from Yorkshire who left school with no qualifications and by age 32 had become the youngest and first British chef to be awarded three Michelin stars. He subsequently handed those stars back in 1999, retiring from the world of high-end cuisine (with sky high prices to match). But if anything his influence of the British dining scene is greater than it’s ever been thanks to his TV appearances, product endorsements and the steak restaurants across the land bearing his name. Which brings us to his latest Sheffield venture, Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. It’s a tricky business, persuading would-be diners to consider a restaurant within a hotel as a stand-alone dining venue. But on first impressions they’ve done a fantastic job of turning a room on the fringes of the city into a smart, contemporary eatery with an atmosphere and style all of its own. Being a Marco restaurant branding plays a part, of course, with images of the great man from his days as a young chef, with wild shoulder-length hair and cheekbones like razorblades, always within view. There’s also a trademark king-sized, ‘Marco’ chair in bold black and white stripes, another factor in making this a restaurant with instant impact. But all these eye-catching trappings
T
146 www.sheffieldvibe.com
wouldn’t count for much if the kitchen didn’t deliver the goods. Thankfully a menu of familiar crowd-pleasing classics, and friendly service from a knowledgeable front-of-house team, ensured that positive first impressions would only be enhanced as the meal progressed. After nibbling on a dish of Martini green olives (£3.95) and sampling some sharply refreshing Waipara Hills Sauvignon Blanc (£7.15 small glass) we started by greeting some old foodie friends. Classic 1970s Prawn Cocktail (£9.95) did exactly what it said on the tin, with a very generous portion of prawns served of a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce with lashings of Marie Rose sauce in the perfect balloon shaped glass. Triangles of brown bread and butter on the side maintained the authentic retro feel. Our other starter, Seared Sea Scallops with Black Pudding (£13.50) may belong to a more recent culinary vintage but is still a very familiar menu staple. No criticism here as when it’s done this well, with top notch scallops and black pudding with a smooth cauliflower purée and shard of crispy pancetta, it’s hard to beat. Given the restaurant’s name someone has to have a steak, and I generously allowed my friend Andy to have first dibs at a grilled 35 day aged 10oz sirloin (£27.50) served with the usual trimmings, skinny fries and a Béarnaise sauce with fresh tarragon (£3.25). Now Andy likes his steak nice and bloody but was swayed by advice from the kitchen – medium-rare would render the fat
correctly and ensure a more enjoyable eating experience. It was a good steer, the meat was tasty and tender, perfectly seasoned with a lovely char-grilled aroma. My main course of roast rump of lamb a la dijonnaise (£23.50) was another winner. The meat was lean and tender, the accompanying rosemary roasting juices and green beans were a perfect match and a slab of gratin dauphinoise was a decadent taste of creamy indulgence. We shared two top desserts. Mr Coulson’s Sticky Toffee Pudding (£6.95) was not too heavy, the accompanying butterscotch sauce a real indulgent treat. Also on the table was the intriguingly named Billionaire’s Shortbread (£7.50) served with vanilla ice-cream. So how does one upgrade the classic ‘millionaire’ combo of caramel, chocolate and shortbread? With a few dashes of gold leaf of course. Flashy but fun, it was the perfect way to end our night with Marco. He’s still got it! Local appeal A RETURN VISIT TO THE DEVONSHIRE ARMS MIDDLE HANDLEY LEFT RICHARD ABBEY WITH ENVIOUS EYES. he Devonshire Arms Middle Handley is the local everyone wishes they had at the end of their street. At least, if I lived a stone’s throw from this charming inn, which dates back to the 18th century, I’d find it hard to keep away. I’d visited last year for a lovely family Sunday lunch, and since returned for breakfast (amazing value) but had not been for dinner. Until now. The bar was already heaving when we arrived on a Friday night; the bar was in full swing with a live musician belting out singalong hits to an enraptured audience. The Stag Restaurant was a (slightly) quieter affair but had a great buzz and was also busy, with diners eager to tuck into the sharing plates, platters, steaks, burgers, flatbreads and more. The chicken and chorizo hanging kebabs coming out of the open kitchen were also proving to be very popular. The dining room is nice and light with the reclaimed furniture giving it an ontrend rustic vibe which sits really well with the 150-year-old building. We started with a glasses of Amore Vino pinot grigio (£4.70) and The
T

Landings shiraz cabernet sauvignon (£6) and tucked into a couple of the tapasstyle small plates. Halloumi fries with chilli jam and lime coriander yoghurt (£6) were deliciously moreish but everso-slightly bettered by crispy monkfish (£8), a sort of grown-up scampi that had the right amount of crispiness and meatiness, complemented wonderfully by the accompanying chilli jam, crème fraiche and rocket. My wife couldn’t resist a steak to follow and was delighted with her 8oz sirloin with house salad and hand-cut chips (£22); the hunk of beef, aged for 30 days, not only looked impressive on the plate but passed the test for flavour with flying colours too. I couldn’t help but steal a couple of the chips, which were close to potato perfection. I was swayed by the specials for my main course and pan-seared halibut, white bean and chorizo ragu (£23) was a triumph; the perfectly cooked white fish married well with the smoky accompaniment that was packed with flavour. Desserts can often be a bit of an anticlimax but this certainly wasn’t the case
at the Devonshire. My Bakewell tart, served warm, with amaretto ice-cream, crème anglaise and blackcurrant purée (£5.50) was one of the best desserts I’d had in a while; the ice-cream was particularly good with the blackcurrant giving it just the right amount of sharpness. My wife opted for a lighter vanilla pannacotta, shortbread biscuit and strawberry compote (£6), the perfect end to a delicious meal. Service, too, was exemplary throughout. With great food, drink and a lively atmosphere (and seven bedrooms should you wish to stay the night), what more could you want from a local? Great escape WHY FILEY IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO STAYCAY IN 2020.
n an age of uncertainty around travel and holidays, there is one thing that discerning Brits are sure about: the need to think long-term when it comes to investing in their vacations. One outcome of this is the rise of the ‘staycation’. More UK residents – 3.8%, according to Visit England – are swapping an annual overseas trip for more frequent breaks on home shores. But this is not just about being cautious – increasingly, people are taking complete control of their hard-earned leisure time, by seeking luxurious accommodation that can also double up as an enduring source of income. For savvy Yorkshire folk, one hidden gem is ripe for discovery when it comes to staycation investments. Filey, with its award-winning, sweeping sandy beach and breath-taking, dramatic clifftops, is rapidly becoming a hotspot amongst aspirational holidaymakers. Understated and elegant, with panoramic views across the bay, this popular seaside retreat is winning countless new devotees. As more people unearth Filey, the demand for luxury property has increased, resulting in a new development of country lodge holiday homes at Aria Resorts’ The Bay Filey. “Filey is an increasingly popular choice for Yorkshire residents who seek out the finer things in life, but who don’t want to waste time travelling too far,” says Paul Bingham, who is sales

Lakeside lodges with unrivalled quality Aria’s new, gated resort at The Bay Filey will feature beautiful lodges in three different styles: the warm and inviting Nikki with natural materials and feature porthole window; the luxury New England-style Tahiti with its vaulted ceilings and sweeping deck; and the bright and spacious Kontiki, designed for families and groups with a love of sea, surf and the great outdoors. TRAVEL
The 2020 Cruise Itinerary Line Up The 2020 cruising programme for Hebridean Princess sees this multi award-winning small ship embark on 38 extraordinary cruises around the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Orkney and Norway. A Return to Norway
Following the success of Hebridean’s Norwegian sojourn in 2017, Hebridean Princess will once again be spreading her wings in 2020. She will explore the lesser known Hardangerfjord and the almost undiscovered Lysefjord, discover the delights of Sognefjord and the deep blue UNESCO-protected Geirangerfjord, and reveal the awe-inspiring inlets and islands between Bergen and Stavanger. Old Favourites, Themes and Guest Speakers
A variety of new Scottish cruises have been introduced, including four new ‘Footloose’ walking itineraries, plus there will be many other familiar favourites. Themed cruises involving cycling, food and drink, gardens, nature and wildlife, arts and architecture, history and heritage will also appear in the 2020 cruising schedule. The success of Hebridean’s Guest Speaker programme will continue to enrich selected departures and knowledgeable on board guides will accompany every itinerary to bring each one to life. Hebridean’s genuinely fully-inclusive pricing structure will continue to include coach transfers from the local airport or railway station to and from Hebridean Princess or for those wishing to drive, secure parking at the port.
Luxury onboard... 30 individually designed cabins are tastefully furnished with the best of classic and contemporary design
Hebridean’s 2020 European River Cruise Collection For those wishing to explore a little further afield, Hebridean’s European River cruise programme transports guests to the very heart of the continent on board the 1930s style river cruiser, MS Royal Crown. From the very inception of Hebridean Island Cruises over 30 years ago, the company wanted its success to be judged, not on how many passengers cruise with them each year, but on how well they look after them. As river cruisers and cruise ships become larger, many carrying hundreds of people, the contrast between a small, personal company such as Hebridean and mass market travel becomes even more apparent. In fact, the only thing which is big about a Hebridean river cruise – is the difference. A Hebridean river cruise on board MS Royal Crown attracts a of maximum of just 70 guests, cared for by a dedicated crew and exceptional Hebridean Team, providing an unequalled level of personal service. Their warm smiles and a genuine

alike. Having just passed on the 2018 baton for the title of European Capital of Cultural, Valletta is thriving on its historical and cultural richness like never before. Built by the noble Knights of St John, Valletta is leading the way for travellers seeking an elegant Mediterranean lifestyle experience. Wining and dining in Valletta
Exploring history in Valletta
Valletta is an ideal all-year round destination for wining and dining. From casual nights out to elegant dinners, Valletta offers a variety of restaurants to choose from. Classic cafés lining the streets, welcoming passers-by with the aroma of freshly-roasted coffee beans, are the perfect outlet for quick snacks. Alternatively, the popular Cheeky Monkey Gastropub is the ideal place to enjoy a casual lunch or dinner, be it a delicious burger, hearty mains or a plate of ‘cheeky’ nibbles to share. Acting as the go-to destination for the island’s funloving folk, Cheeky Monkey’s tempting drinks menu cheekily states that getting drunk is permitted. Besides already-established restaurants, Valletta has seen a rise in innovative dining outlets that are revolutionising the culinary scene. One example is the recently-opened Merchants Street restaurant, Grain. Having introduced a unique sharing concept, Grain’s casual
Apart from a flourishing culinary scene, Valletta is also a designated World Heritage City that has been described by UNESCO as ‘one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world’. Naturally, the capital boasts numerous museums that share the island’s rich history. That history comes to life inside buildings such as the Grandmaster’s Palace, in which visitors can see the extravagantly adorned state rooms built by the Order of the Knights of St John. Here, one can also visit the Palace Armoury, which houses one of the most impressive collections of arms in the world. Malta’s wartime history shines through every corner of the city, even beneath the ground. In fact, Valletta’s underground consists of tunnels, cisterns and chambers that served multiple uses throughout history. The Lascaris War Rooms, for example, are a complex network of subterranean tunnels that were dug out by hand by British troops
atmosphere is elevated by a bespoke menu. Guests are encouraged to savour diverse flavours and share plates, rather than following the traditional threecourse sequence. Although Grain’s menu is primarily Mediterranean – flaunting dishes such as the Classic Caesar Salad and Wild Seabass – it does feature oriental items such as the mouth-watering Beef Yakitori. The adventurous theme also extends into its drinks menu, as wines are served by the glass, giving visitors the opportunity to taste different flavours and enhance their dining experience.

to serve as their Headquarters from 1940, and later as NATO’s Communication Centre between 1967 and 1977, before being closed down and reopened into the museum that stands today. Other museums dotted around the city invite visitors to delve deep into Malta’s history, such as the War Museum at Fort St Elmo and the National Museum of Archaeology.
Immerse yourself in Valletta’s culture There are several historical buildings, such as Casa Rocca Piccola, which also act as a window into the way of life of Maltese aristocrats. In fact, the five-star luxury hotel Rosselli – AX Privilege is located within a meticulously restored 17th century Palazzo, which once belonged to the noble goldsmith, Pietro Rosselli, and his wife, Alusietta Massa. Saint John’s Co-Cathedral, located a stone’s throw away from Merchants Street, is home to two Caravaggio masterpieces. Here, you’ll find stunning artefacts and artworks, as well as cultural events and religious masses taking place on a regular basis. Even if you’re not religious, this 16th century church’s interiors are a sight to behold. Besides its rich past, Valletta is currently witnessing history in the making. The entrance to the city has been given an architectural revamp by celebrated architect Renzo Piano, who designed the new parliament building in Valletta, as well as the City Gate, the stunning Triton Fountain and Pjazza Teatru Rjal. Last year also saw the opening of the green-powered Malta National Community Art Museum, MUZA. Book your stay at AX The Saint John or Rosselli – AX Privilege and explore Valletta inside out during your trip to Malta. 158 www.sheffieldvibe.com
MOTORING
Power of five
NEW MODELS AND SPECIAL EDITIONS CAPTURE THE INTEREST OF JORDAN CUTFORTH.
The all-new Audi RS7 provides everything that you’d expect from a high-performance Audi – and things you wouldn’t expect too. Powered by a very familiar 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, the RS7 has 592hp and 800NM of torque and thanks to the new five-seat configuration (the previous model being a four-seater), more people can enjoy this immense power. As with every RS product from Audi, there is Quattro all-wheel-drive and on this RS7, adaptive RS air suspension. Power is transferred through an eight-speed tiptronic transmission. The exterior is purposeful RS Audi design language with sharp edges producing a seriously impressive road presence, and the inside is typical Audi with high quality materials coupled with impeccable levels of technology.
Off Pista
Leading from the front The all-new BMW 1 Series is here and there are some radical changes – chief among which is that the 1-Series is now front-wheel-drive. Thanks to this new front-wheel-drive layout there is much more interior space than previous models, more noticeably in the rear seats with 33mm extra kneeroom, 19mm more headroom and 42mm more elbowroom. Engine choices available are three diesels – 116d (116hp and 61.4mpg), 118d (150hp and 60.1mpg), 120d (190hp and 51.4mpg) – and two petrol engines – 118i (140hp and 47.1mpg) and the M135i (306hp and 35.3mpg). Three transmissions are available depending on the engine choice: an upgraded six-speed manual, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an eight-speed auto. Prices start from £24,430 and deliveries commence from late September.
Another new Abarth, and another stellar product. The Abarth version of the Fiat 500 is one of the naughtiest small hot hatches on the market right now – today we have a new model to add to the mix. Called the 595 Pista, it comes with a new oversized Garrett turbocharger helping develop 165hp. It comes with the extremely fruity sounding Record Monza exhaust system giving this car a very distinctive sound on the road. The 595 Pista is packed with standard equipment including a racing steering wheel with flat bottom and the “Sport” button which adjusts peak torque output, power steering settings and the throttle response for an even more thrilling drive. Prices start from £19,135.
Compact Kamiq Skoda’s all new compact SUV – the Kamiq – will be priced from £17,700. Four trim levels are available: S, SE, SE L and Monte Carlo. The entry-level model, the S, will come with 16-inch alloy wheels, LED lights, air conditioning, Swing infotainment system with DAB, a 6.5-inch touchscreen display and Skoda e-Call. Higher spec models come with the likes of larger alloy wheels, better infotainment systems, stop/start and blind-spot monitoring. The Kamiq range consists of four engine options; three petrol and one diesel. The petrol engine line-up features two 1.0 TSI units with 94hp and 113hp, and a 1.5 TSI motor that generates 148hp. The single diesel engine is a 1.6 TDI unit that develops 113hp.

The MG ZS EV on display in the Eric Stead showroom
Eric Stead MG Charging ahead SHEFFIELD MG DEALERSHIP WELCOMES THE NEW ZS EV TO ITS SHOWROOM. family-run, Sheffield-based motor dealership is celebrating, after it welcomed the longawaited MG ZS EV to its showroom – and it hasn’t disappointed. Award-winning Eric Stead, based in Ecclesfield, welcomed the all-electric family SUV which has received phenomenal write ups from the motor industry’s leading experts. Not only does it rate better than some larger manufacturers in a recent report from Car Magazine including the likes of Jaguar, Audi and Nissan, but it costs a lot less too. Simon Stead of the family-run business comments: “We are very excited to have our first MG ZS EV in the showroom for customers to come and look at and take it on test drives. Since MG announced its first fully electric car we have been inundated with enquiries. “Now it’s here, it really does look and drive beautifully. It’s the perfect family car as the UK and the rest of the globe look to electric travel.” Described as the first truly affordable, family friendly electric car, Eric Stead has already seen its pre-order records smashed as South Yorkshire families want to get their hands on the stylish ZS which starts from just from £21,995 (after plug-in car grant and MG grant). MG Motor UK has smashed its new

car pre-sales records by securing 1,000 orders for its sensational MG ZS EV in just two weeks. Lucky customers received a discount of £3,500 and received a free home charging point and standard installation. For its size the MG ZS EV is far from sluggish, it can accelerate from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds, cover 163 miles on a single charge (with rapid charging capability) and accommodate the needs of most families thanks to its vast boot and large cabin. The ZS EV is MG’s most high-tech car ever, with the MG Pilot driver assistance suite setting new standards of specification and delivering exceptional value for money. Packed with innovative features, the ZS EV is designed to provide customers with a stress-free driving experience. MG Pilot is a driver assistance suite which complements the driver and offers support when required. Excite and Exclusive versions both include MG Pilot as standard, with features including
Advanced Emergency Braking, Blindspot Monitoring, Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control. The MG ZS EV is just the latest model to come from the motor giant following on from the ever-popular supermini the MG3 that is completely customisable and the MG ZS, which was launched back in 2017. MG Motor UK along with Eric Stead is certainly bucking the motor industry trend, seeing month on month sales of all models increasing. August was the best month to date with a 13.1 per cent increase compared with the same month in 2018 and in a market that declined by 1.6 per cent overall. With the introduction of ZS EV and its selection of top-class dealerships, MG has firmly positioned itself as the UKs fastest growing car manufacturer. If you would like more information about Eric Stead, the new MG ZS EV or any of its used car offering visit the website www.ericstead.co.uk or call 0114 245 4404.
