WS Legal
Jeff Knibb, head of personal injury at Wosskow Brown, discusses the legal minefield of driverless cars.
Y
ou may think this is the perfect time of year for personal injury lawyers to be warning drivers about the perils of bad weather, dark nights and soggy autumn
leaves. You’d be right, of course. We all need to be more careful as those balmy summer evenings give way to altogether more treacherous driving conditions. But while Wosskow Brown’s personal injury department will no doubt be inundated with road traffic accident (RTA) claims in the coming months, they will also be turning their attentions to a more futuristic issue. Like smart phones, WiFi and sat nav, we’ll soon wonder how we ever coped without driverless cars. They may seem years away from being regular features of our roads, but the UK government has already pledged £19million for self-driving car research, and the first prototypes are due to be tested here imminently. They’ll be here before we know it – and with them will come a new legal minefield. Jeff explains: “Insurance companies often drag their feet even when there is an obvious
party to blame, so when driverless cars are introduced, the situation will be significantly more difficult to navigate.” The first injury-causing accident involving a driverless car has already occurred. This
But Wosskow Brown is already planning for what will undoubtedly become one of the trickier legal issues of modern times. As with every personal injury claim they process, they will use their long-established expertise to maximise the reward their clients are entitled to. So while you can’t realistically expect to be a passenger in your own car until at least 2030 – according to official estimates – you can rest assured that Wosskow Brown will be ready and waiting to take on the relevant claims when the time does come. In the meantime, of course, they’re on hand to help you with more pressing matters. So, if you are rear-ended by a car skidding on those pesky autumn leaves on your way home tonight, you know where to turn. Wosskow Brown 620 Attercliffe Road, Sheffield S9 3QS Tel: 0114 256 1560
summer, in Google’s home city of Mountain View, California, someone drove into the back of one of their driverless test vehicles. It seems human error, for now at least, is still the most likely cause of RTAs.

“ Thank you all for all of your efforts in securing the sale of Hathersage Hall. No other agent I know of would have gone to as much effort with as much attention to detail than Blenheim Park Estates. Your service was outstanding on all fronts Mike Harrison, Hathersage Hall.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Blenheim Park Estates for the exceptional service that you provided when selling my property. My first observation was the outstanding attention to detail shown throughout the sale, nothing was too much trouble. The professionalism shown in selling my property, along with the dedication and passion to achieving a sale, was truly exceptional. I felt totally at ease knowing my property sale was in safe hands, the service you and your colleagues provided was simply first class. Matthew Whitehead, Woolgreaves Hall

‘If you are approaching retirement it is very important that you seek advice from a Professional INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVISER’ says Phil Smith Director at Hamnett Wealth Management. For people approaching retirement or supplementing their pension income from savings, times are tough. Interest rates have been at a record low for over 6 years. The amount of income available at retirement through traditional annuities for people who have diligently saved into private pensions is lower now than ever. Those people who have worked hard and done the right thing by building a nest egg are justified in feeling more than just a little hard done by at the moment. However, help is at hand. At Hamnett Wealth Management our job is to help you get your money working for you! If you’re not happy with the interest you are getting on your savings we can see if you are getting the best rate available, don’t let your money add to the banks’ profits, let’s help it profit you. If you are not satisfied with the returns on your investments, take advantage of our Investment review service, we will make sure your money is invested for your benefit and not for the benefit of poorly performing fund managers and insurance companies. If you have a Personal Pension it is crucial you get INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE, things have changed dramatically! We will ensure you fully understand all your retirement options (and they are numerous), you don’t have to take the first offer from your existing pension provider, there is nearly always better value from the open market when considering annuities, and the new flexible pension income options need to be fully considered as well. You often only get once chance to get things right when retiring so take advantage of our qualified and professional advice to make sure the extra pounds are going in your pocket and not insurance company coffers!

Over the years, this innovative approach has enabled the school to develop a dynamic curriculum and stateof-the-art facilities which provide an outstanding all-round education. Students enjoy their lessons, gain excellent examination results and are wellprepared for future study. In 2015 Birkdale students achieved 100 per cent pass rate at A Level. Nearly half of all grades were A*/A grade, resulting in 90 per cent of Sixth Form leavers achieving places at their choice of university. At GCSE 83 per cent of all entries were A*, A or B. An enormous range of extra-curricular opportunities in sport, music, drama, academic societies and outdoor pursuits nurture individual talents, and help to produce well-rounded young people. In a spin Help is at hand for vertigo sufferers, courtesy of Hallamshire Physiotherapy.
C
arol had been struggling with dizziness for over three months. Her GP had given her a diagnosis but she increasingly had problems with feelings of being offbalance, spinning when she lay down and problems reading or watching TV. Naturally, she was frightened to move for fear of exacerbating her symptoms and this caused her to avoid social contact and become anxious about the future. For our bodies to stay upright and balanced, our brains require information from different sources. The eyes, inner ear and sensory systems work together to know where we are in space and keep us balanced. Vertigo is the sensation of spinning or movement of yourself or the environment. There are several causes of vertigo, many of which can be treated with vestibular rehabilitation. The vestibular system (or inner ear) detects whether we are rotating, accelerating or decelerating. This information is sent via a cranial nerve to the brain, where it is received and processed. Finally, several systems work together to keep us balanced and, importantly, our vision stable whilst we move. If something goes wrong with any part of the vestibular system, individuals can experience vertigo. Vertigo can be very distressing and the unseen nature of the symptoms can compound these emotions. People often start to avoid activity – and especially movement – that triggers the symptoms. Vestibular rehabilitation aims to reduce both the vertiginous symptoms and the consequences of these symptoms. Consequences include loss of confidence, fear of falling, and difficulty reading, using a computer or travelling in a car. A range of exercises can be prescribed that help to improve balance and head-eye co-ordination, and reduce vertigo. Advice is also provided on returning to activities and managing symptoms. Carol did make a full recovery after three sessions with Karen Stevens, a senior physiotherapist who specialises in the treatment of vertigo at the Hallamshire Physiotherapy clinic. She sees many patients like Carol and most make a full recovery and return to their previous activities. Don’t let vertigo or dizziness affect your life; see Karen and start to understand what you can do to see the improvements for yourself. The perfect day Family and friends gathered in the sunshine for Westside publishing manager Samantha’s nuptials to her long-term partner Graham Warsop.
L
ove was in the air this summer when Westside’s publishing manager Samantha Warsop married her partner of 12 years, Graham. As a woman on a mission to create the perfect wedding, she set out to enlist the help of the region’s finest… and where better to find such businesses than within the pages of Westside? Of course, no wedding would be complete without a stunning dress, so Sam headed straight to Anabella Bridal on Oakbrook Road. This intimate bridal boutique is an exclusive UK stockist and distributor of Cotin Sposa (a manufacturer of high-quality handmade Italian designer dresses). They use the finest laces, handmade embroidery, Swarovski crystals and high-quality natural fabrics to bring beautiful designs to life. After meeting with owner Lauren Lavender and viewing the latest collection, Sam opted for the top, middle and bottom of three different designs, creating her own bespoke dress, which Lauren had steamed and dropped off in person on the morning of the wedding. No dress would be complete without luxurious bridal underwear to complement it,
Sam says: “Thank you to everyone that made our wedding so special. Everything was perfect and it’s thanks to such dedicated local suppliers that we were able to create the day we’d dreamed of.” www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
making Lace of Bakewell the next port of call. As suppliers of exclusive lingerie, swimwear and nightwear from some of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers, you know you’re in safe hands at Lace. With over 25 years in the lingerie industry, there’s no denying owner Sue Haywood is something of a bra doctor (on this particular visit, she managed to guess Sam’s bra size while she was still wearing her jacket). After a thorough fitting, a beautiful basque and matching underwear were ordered in specially. With Sam’s outfit complete, it was time to visit Lesley Taylor of New Image to find Sam’s mum, Joy, an outfit. New Image have been established for over 25 years and offer individual fashion with a friendly personal service. They provide a large collection of special occasion wear, from leading fashion designers such as Condici, John Charles and Gina Bacconi, and after browsing their huge mother-of-the-bride department, Joy selected a gorgeous Condici dress. New Image don’t just offer dresses though, they provide all wedding fashion, and Joy completed her outfit with a stylish blue and white hatinator. Their excellent staff provided a one-to-one personal service and made sure Joy felt incredibly special in her outfit. Graham’s mum, Rispah, visited Sister on Ecclesall Road in search of an outfit and received a warm welcome from owner Lisa Hempstock. Sister always keep their finger on the pulse of the most current fashions and understand exactly what their customers need. Rispah enjoyed a truly personal service and a glass of Prosecco while Lisa helped pick out a Marc Cain dress with a Boss jacket to match. With outfits sorted, it was time for Sam and Graham to design the rings at McAvoy & Beardsmore, on Oakbrook Road. The friendly experts in store are able to discuss your ideas, present creative concepts and guide you through developing your thoughts into a specific design. Tim and Sam Beardsmore created a bespoke design for Sam and Graham, which they then handcrafted into two beautiful white-gold bands.

Before they knew it, the morning of the wedding had arrived. A vintage double-decker bus picked Sam and her bridesmaids up and took them to the beautiful Botanical Gardens for the ceremony. Yorkshire’s favourite string trio, Simply Strings, provided the perfect soundtrack as Sam walked down the aisle. These talented musicians have a combined experience of more than 30 years playing professionally and are experts in adding that touch of finesse to your special day. As Sam and Graham emerged into the sunlight as man and wife, they were greeted by Mr Chimney. It’s no secret that if a chimney sweep meets a bride and groom at their wedding it’s a very good omen for their future. In keeping with this timeless tradition, Mr Chimney read out a poem dedicated to the happy couple, gave Sam a ‘good-luck kiss’ and wished them well for the future. Simply Strings were back to greet guests as they arrived at the wedding reception, which was held at Cubana in Leopold Square. As one of Sheffield’s best-loved drinking/dining/party venues, when it came to choosing a setting for their wedding reception, there was no other option for Sam and Graham. Co-owner Adrian Bagnoli helped plan and coordinate everything, from welcome drinks and food, to musicians and entertainment. As the sangria flowed and guests enjoyed a selection of delicious tapas, four Brazilian dancers got everyone on their feet and then jazz and swing musician Nicola Farnon provided an outstanding performance and kept everyone entertained late into the evening. As the night came to a close it was just a short walk across the square to Leopold Hotel, where the bride and groom and their wedding party enjoyed a luxurious stay in the four-star boutique hotel, which boasts a prime location in Sheffield’s city centre. Sam and Graham stayed in a lavish mezzanine suite and they all enjoyed breakfast together at the hotel the next day. *See more pictures overleaf and in Gnome on page 54.

It’s what’s underneath...
Marie-Jo Celine
Wedding attire doesn’t stop with the dress… Here are Lace’s lingerie tips for brides to be.
Y
es, it’s the wedding season. If you’re taking the plunge soon, it’s time to think about your lingerie. Because your perfect day (and night) requires the perfect
lingerie set. These lingerie tips will ensure you look totally stunning in that gorgeous wedding dress and totally irresistible when everyone else has gone home and there’s just the two of you alone. It’s a simple but fundamental rule for brides: the dress comes first, then the lingerie. If you’ve already found the dress or outfit of your dreams take it with you to the lingerie boutique or take photos and swatches to show to the lingerie specialist. That will ensure you find the perfect lingerie to go with your wedding dress. The cut is the most important factor: under a bustier dress you wear a strapless bra, under an extra tight one you’ll prefer sensual control briefs. Matching the fabric of your lingerie to that of your dress is the super-stylish thing to do. If you’ve chosen a frock with a lot of lace or embroidery, choose luxurious lingerie like Céline’s fabulous push-up with that chic retro lace. Under a fine plain fabric it’s better to choose smooth lingerie that does not show under clothing, like Tilda’s sensual glossy bras and briefs or Divine’s ultra smooth lingerie. White is still a classic – in fact it’s trendier than ever. Perfect under a wedding dress in off-white or a soft champagne tint. What about the crispy white of classic Avero, Romy’s romantic white lace or Aurora’s
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
elegant floral embroidery with silver sparkle... now that’s love at first sight. If you’ve gone for a white dress in a light fabric, choose a set in a lovely pastel that does not show through. Like a dress with a sensual neckline? Go for it, but do take care when choosing your bra. There are various styles to choose from. Ask for the lingerie stylist to help you find the one that flatters you most. A balcony bra shows off some of your upper breasts, for instance – some versions also offer an extra deep plunge. It’s hard to enjoy yourself when your lingerie looks so good, but feels so annoyingly uncomfortable. Lingerie that looks good and fits perfectly is an absolute must, especially when you plan to finish the party on the dance floor. Thankfully, the time when you had to grin and bear it is gone, because even shapewear is so comfy these days that you can party all night long. Try the Couture, Jane and Robbie briefs and bodies or the A La Folie sets. Never worn a sensual bustier, a dress with lace or super sexy garters, just because it’s so damn sexy? It’s now or never. Fingers crossed, you’ll only have one wedding day, so
you owe it to yourself to take it to the max. If there’s one occasion when you can demand the very best, this is it. Don’t compromise, go for the best lingerie you can get for under your dream dress. There’s a perfect style for every figure, a perfect cut for every outfit and a perfect colour for every complexion. A professional lingerie specialist will guide you every step of the way: from size to style and colour. Don’t be shy: ask for advice and don’t accept second best! Set on the banks of the River Sheaf, Abbeydale offers unique photo album opportunities beside the tranquil Abbeydale dam and its original stone buildings, waterwheels and grindstones are reminiscent of the hamlet’s industrial past as an 18th century scythe and steelworks. orksop College and Preparatory School understand how highly families value personal recommendations when choosing the right school for their child. Here, some of their existing parents describe why they chose Worksop College for their children. Mr and Mrs Hutson, of Tickhill, parents of Joseph (age 12), Francesca (ten) and Laurie (eight), had visited and

There was a genuine sense of belonging and pride in the schools that we wanted to be part of. We can honestly say we have never looked back since choosing Worksop College for our children. It is an exciting and special place to be, with superb direction.” Mrs Tina Polak, of Southwell, was taken by the close-knit school community which is adopted by all pupils, parents, teachers and staff. “Arriving at Worksop College is like arriving into your family home. Confidence for the future Handsworth Christian School is heading in the right direction under the stewardship of new head, Antony Swift.
H
andsworth Christian School (HCS) in Sheffield is delighted to announce the appointment of Antony Swift as head teacher. Mr Swift takes up the post after the founding head, Pauline Arnott, retired on the grounds of ill health earlier this year. Chair of governors Mark Suter said: “With over four decades of experience as a science teacher, generations of pupils have been nurtured under Antony’s tutelage. His wisdom, care and considered leadership inspire great confidence for the future of Handsworth Christian School.” Born in Pitsmoor in 1944, Antony grew up in Sheffield. His second year junior teacher at Stradbroke Primary School, Mr Fairbairn, cultivated his love of nature through many outdoor lessons exploring woodlands and discovering local flora and fauna. This early passion inspired Antony to study botany at Victoria University, Manchester, and to enter the teaching profession. Antony said: “People have asked why I am taking on this challenge at a time when so many of my peers are retiring. Well, I tried early retirement in 1997 when I left Wath High School and I couldn’t keep away. I returned that year to teach part time at Handsworth Christian School and believe that my experience has a lot to offer. In Handsworth Christian School, I found a hidden gem in the city. A family school with a tremendous atmosphere for staff and pupils alike. “It is my commitment to build on our achievement as the top performing non-selective school in Sheffield – we’ve had the highest percentage five A*-C grades in Sheffield for three years running – and to ensure that each child achieves their full potential. As a senior GCSE examiner, I know what it takes to equip pupils for a changing world and will use this experience in leading the school. “At HCS, we celebrate an individual’s successes. Whether it’s accelerated acceptance at university or a young person with learning difficulties achieving a much struggled-for G at GCSE, we recognise the achievement of each member of our wonderfully diverse family. “I want each child to enjoy their education and be happy as they learn. Our Christian ethos, curriculum and extra-curricula activities help pupils to mature into considerate, responsible, tolerant and successful adults who impact their community and the world beyond.” To find out how your child can join this supportive school, why not attend the open evening on Thursday 15 October 7-9pm? Are we all about academics? No, but were you aware the Daily Telegraph and The Times both rank QE College as the top most academically successful day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results and our Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s, the second most academically successful co-educational day and boarding school in the North for A*/ A grades at A Level and equivalent results?
Are we all about Sport? No independent school in the North has the equivalent of our £20m Sports Village. A parent said we are now in a league above the rest. See: www.sportsvillageqe.org
Are we all about superb facilities? No, but we have invested over £80m in superb new teaching facilities and resources in the last 8 years - way more than any other independent school in the North.
Are we all about boarding? No, but no one comes close to the quality of our boarding accommodation. The best in the UK. All bedrooms have private bathroom, air-con, TV, phone & mini-kitchen.
Are we all about day pupils? A LEVEL RESULTS 2015 QE COLLEGE Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 98% QE FACULTY Overall pass rate 100% A*/A - A level results - 81% A*/B - A level results - 97% “We were looking for our children to change schools. However in the independent sector this has financial implications. Our problems in this regard were solved by the offer of Day or Boarding Awards (our choice) for both children. They moved, are now happy, and doing very well. QE is growing in size because it is run in a refreshing, modern and much better way. There are plenty of day children.”
No, but it is interesting to note our day fees are, on average, over 14% less cost than other local independent schools and our bus service covers a very big local area.
Is it all about Scholarships and Awards? No, but then again who else offers over £3m in Scholarships and Awards every year? Even without any form of Scholarship or Award, sending your child to QE could save you between £3,000 and £7,000 in day fees a year, compared to elsewhere.
All of the above are perhaps the reasons why appreciably more parents have chosen QE this year than last year. SPECIAL BOARDING AWARDS Worth up to £75,500 Awarded to outstanding, high achieveing students in categories Academic and/or Sport. Awards based on experience and ability, subject to interview and assessment. (Note a 30% award may be given under this scholarship type for our Elite Sport programmes). Twinkle Toes Twinkle Toes’ children’s department offers a great choice of brands with four different width fittings up to size 11/45. They sell many continental brands as well as traditional Start Rite shoes to provide the best fittings for children. They also have high street brands like Converse, Camper, Salt Water, Emu and more. In recent years, the footwear producers have cut down making shoes with different width fittings, which made retailers jobs more challenging. But thanks to the level of training they do at Twinkle Toes, all of their staff have excellent skills to find the right fitting shoe from their collection for individual feet. Twinkle Toes ensures, kids walk, run and jump in puddles with a smile when winter comes. Their ladies’ and men’s department located on the upper floor offers customers comfort and a modern and trendy look with simple detailing. Some of their brands are unique and continue to invest in innovation. Their adult brands include Camper, Legero, Fly London, Art, Ecco and more. 15-17 Nile Street, Sheffield, S10 2PN. Two Steps Fish and Chips Two Steps is probably the oldest fish and chip shop in Sheffield, serving traditional, high quality fish and chips since 1895. Steeped in history and a famous local landmark, the infamous Friday night Two Steps queues speak for themselves. “The best fish and chip shop in Sheffield bar none,” says one customer. “The fish is always fresh and perfectly fried. Proper no nonsense portions of chips as well.” It’s a traditional fish and chip shop serving good quality food at reasonable prices. Particularly popular are the £2.25 ‘specials’ offering sausage or fish with chips and a side of your choice. The owners are passionate about keeping alive traditional Yorkshire food including rissoles, fishcakes and buttered breadcakes, which are hugely popular with the locals. Open lunchtimes six days a week (closed Sundays) and every evening, Two Steps caters for many a hungry customer searching for a consistently tasty meal. Museums Secret Egypt: Unravelling Truth from Myth
Charity Sheff’s Kitchen… cook-off for charity! 23 October, Genting Club Tel: 0114 235 2678 Email: eventsenquiries@whirlowhallfarm.org Whirlow Hall Farm Trust has been busy cooking up a storm this summer with the help of four very talented chefs from Sheffield. James Mellor (West10), Lee Mangles (Silversmiths), Jon Tite (Showroom) and Charlie Curran (Peppercorn Restaurant) have been competing against each other at bistro evenings held at Whirlow Hall Farm. Diners have enjoyed fine dining experiences showcasing the delicious produce of the farm, while raising money for the charity. The knockout rounds are now over and the final round will see the remaining chefs fight to claim the winning title. The competition, named Sheff’s Kitchen, is loosely based on the television show Hell’s Kitchen, where diners score the dishes. The evening will be filled with culinary delights and some of the best food the city has to offer. All funds raised go directly to support the work of the trust and their work with local children. Whirlow educates younger generations by bridging the gap from field to fork and teaching them about where their food comes from. It’s going to be one hell of a fight and you don’t want to miss it.

WS Christmas
Get the party sorted Christmas is coming and time is running out... so get that festive do organised right now, says Stephanie Burns.
T
here’s no escaping it. However much we’d like to bury our heads in a cashmere sweater and refuse to accept that Christmas is a little over a few months away, the reality is unfortunately staring us in the face at every opportunity. Christmas adverts will soon be creeping into our daily consciousness and it won’t be long before every department store in the land is blasting out Slade for all to hear. Now, the mavericks among us may already have decided to leave Christmas shopping until 24 December. Fine. The disappointment on your partner’s face when presented with exactly the wrong gift will only be scorched upon your mind for eternity. The rest of us, smug with our thoughtfully purchased presents, need not share your inevitable misery. But there is one festive tradition that may not simply be overlooked. There is no shortcut to it, nor is there any possibility of a last-minute plan. Because when a significant number of people are relying on
WESTSIDE 104
you to deliver this specific slice of Christmas joy, do you really want to be the one to let them down? It’s the annual Christmas bash and, if you’re responsible for organising it, you had better already have your act in gear. We’re talking exact numbers, an agreed date and a list of vegetarians. Once you’re armed with the essentials and have ironed out the requests of your fussier colleagues or friends, you can get down to the serious
“When a significant number of people are relying on you to deliver this specific slice of Christmas joy, do you really want to be the one to let them down?”
business of booking the all-important venue. Thankfully for us Sheffield folk, we’re blessed with party venues aplenty. Be it the annual work booze up, a social night out with friends, or even the Christmas Day meal itself, there’s certainly no shortage of places to host your do. In fact, some of the best can be found over the next few pages. Whether you’re searching for a hotel, a restaurant, a pub or even a casino to make your event one to remember (for all the right reasons), City is here to recommend Sheffield and the surrounding region’s finest. And even though, with just weeks to spare, the most popular nights will have been booked months in advance by those organisers who live up to their name, fear not. For there will still be a final few places left to fill your party-shaped hole. But leave it any longer at your peril. Because, once Noddy Holder’s dulcet tones do begin to fill the chilly air, the final venues will almost certainly have been snapped up and you can wave goodbye to your Christmas bonus once and for all.

WS Eating Out Words: Fiona Barber
Too good to miss?
A dedication to authentic Thai cuisine has seen Patoo Thai establish itself as a firm Ecclesall Road favourite.
M
any of us vividly remember the winter of 2010. South Yorkshire saw some of the heaviest snowfall in years, and record low temperatures, travel chaos and school disruptions swiftly followed. But while all of this was ongoing, Jariya Sancunakorn was busy completing the finishing touches to Ecclesall Road’s newest eatery, Patoo Thai. Fast forward five years, and Patoo Thai has become well established as one of Sheffield’s premier restaurants, serving authentic Thai cuisine. We arrived early one Saturday evening and received a warm welcome from Jariya and her team. The restaurant has recently been refurbished to give a more classical Thai ambience; it now has neutral earthy-brown walls and everything from the tables and chairs, to the dazzling Thai art, have been imported from Thailand. Our waiter recommended the assorted Patoo starter: a platter of satay chicken skewers, spring rolls, spare ribs, tempurabattered prawns and khanom pang na gai (fried pork toast) served on an impressive ornate dish. If you’re looking to taste a variety of appetisers that showcase exactly what Patoo does best, then this is a great place to start. The ribs were especially delicious – meaty and succulent with plenty of sauce – and, when it comes to decoration and attention to detail, Patoo really know how to make an impression; the starter came served with a carrot carved into a bird – wings spread – with the point of a red chilli as a beak. Now, although usual practice for dining out involves a starter, main and dessert, when
WESTSIDE 106
Jariya insisted we try two of their most popular soups, we decided to defy tradition and ordered starter number two – a decision neither of us regretted. The menu describes tom yum as the ‘favourite Thai soup’, and it’s easy to see why. Seasoned with lime, lemon grass, and galangal roots, this dish packs a real punch with a healthy kick of chilli and a generous serving of mushrooms and prawns. For me, it was the winning dish of the evening. Across the table, my partner tucked into a tom kha. Made with coconut milk and Thai galangal, this was more mellow than my tom yum, but equally as flavoursome. For mains, we both chose from the specials menu and my spicy lamb came sizzling on a hot skillet with peppers and onions, coated in a delicious aromatic gravy. My partner’s crispy sea bass fillet was also a real feast, with peppers and cabbage, and an indulgent sticky-sweet sauce, which perfectly complemented the fish. With just enough room left for dessert, we wanted to finish on a high, and the cocoroll pancake – stuffed with sweet desiccated coconut and served with ice cream – did exactly that. There are many reasons to visit Patoo, but it seems their dedication to staying true to authentic Thai cuisine is what has been winning over customers for the last five years. They understand how important the finer details are – like importing herbs and vegetables from Thailand every week, and displaying fresh flowers on each table. And it’s exactly for these reasons that, even if snowfall this year reaches thigh height, I will be pulling on my thermal waterproofs and plodding my way to Patoo. It’s simply too good to miss.

WS Eating Out
The beast unleashed
It was a man v sausage showdown at Swanky Frank’s… and the hot dog won. Words and photography: Stephanie Burns
I
n a quiet corner of Woodseats, set back from the busy Chesterfield Road, there lies a diner that, despite its discreet location, manages to draw in crowds from all over Sheffield. And, as my partner Ben and I discovered on a typically bustling Friday night, Swanky Frank’s’ secret is no real secret at all – great big plates of American food to satisfy even the hardiest appetites have been going down a storm for years. Ben had clearly missed the memo about Swanky’s famously huge portion sizes. While I knowingly tucked into a carb-light starter of chicken wings – just the right level of spice and a lovely Caesar dip to dunk them in – he eagerly wolfed down a great big pile of pulled pork nachos. The plate groaned with tortilla chips smothered in sour cream, guacamole, cheese, salsa, jalapenos and homemade pulled pork and I wondered how he was ever going to manage another two courses. Oh how I laughed when, minutes into our mains, a waiter came over to check how Ben was proceeding with his giant hot dog – a 12inch, 6oz pork sausage, piled high with chilli and onions and loaded into a freshly baked bun. The reason for the waiter’s interest? Diners brave enough to polish off every last morsel of this beast are awarded a medal for their efforts. Needless to say, he failed spectacularly. Over on my side of the table, my halo slipped clean off as I tucked into a calzone with vigour – all thoughts ofbeing healthy long forgotten. This traditional folded-over pizza base was fit to burst with tomato, mozzarella, pepperoni, salami, mushrooms, red onion and ham and topped with a rich Napoli tomato sauce, and I enjoyed every sinful mouthful.Yes, there are healthier options on the menu, but who really visits Swanky’s craving a salad?
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
Grease played on loop in the background and the stereo kicked out both old and new classics (think Dire Straits followed by Kings of Leon). The scene was very much set and a Lynchburg Lemonade followed by a bottle of Brooklyn lager completed our
authentic America diner experience. Well, almost. I’ve seen enough American films (this screening of Grease was perhaps my 20th viewing) to know that nothing says diner quite like an ice-cream to share – served in a tall glass with two long spoons, you know the drill. It’s the nearest thing to romance you can find here and we looked every bit the stereotype; jostling each other’s spoons out of the way to scoop up more cream/ice-cream/strawberries than the other. If you’re looking for a good time, a buzzing atmosphere and a great choice of deliciously wicked food, there are few more perfect locations than Swanky Frank’s. But if you want to take home one of those coveted medals, I’d advise you to skip lunch. And maybe breakfast, too, come to think of it.

“
ho are these strange people?” diners must have thought, “chewing on dry bread and sniffing the skin on their arms while quaffing glass after glass of wine.” We were an odd group, huddled in the corner of Brocco on the Park surrounded by wine glasses with nought but a few slices of bread to suggest we were sampling their culinary delights. If they were looking for answers, the person to ask was James Northard, sales manager at Austin’s Wine Merchants. We’d been assembled here under his instruction, willing participants in a blind taste test of new and up-and-coming wines. As for the skin sniffing? “The best way to cleanse the palate is with bread,” he’d told us. “To cleanse your

nose, you need to smell your own skin.” Who were we to argue with the expert? Ideally, we’d have been in an entirely neutral environment: absolutely no odours, very specific lighting and just the right

temperature. Brocco, with its clean lines and elegant Scandi-chic décor, was the nearest we could find and, thankfully, altogether more appealing than the laboratory environment required by sommeliers. The majority of our panel were more than familiar with the distinctions between grapes – helpfully, they had pre-empted James’ recommendation that to train the palate, one must be a regular consumer – but sommeliers, they were not. All steered clear of Chardonnay and, even though James insisted that at previous wine tastings he’d surprised his guests with some wonderful versions, they were pleased to hear it wouldn’t be making an appearance. With the knowledge that a master of wine could enter a blind tasting and identify not only the grape variety but the region and

How to taste wine: Appearance Whites can be lemon, gold, amber and even green in colour, while reds tend to be purple, ruby, garnet or tawny.Whites can be clear or dull; look through a white wine onto a piece of white paper to check for impurities. even the producer, too, they set to work. Expectations (of themselves, mostly) where sky high. In seconds, John announced the first pour as Picpoul de Pinet. Currently jostling for position as the house wine du jour – France’s answer to Pinot Grigio, if you will – Picpoul has boomed in popularity in the last 18 months. This citrussy version, pale yellow with green tints and aromas of freshly cut flowers, went down well with most of the panel, although Martin and Jayne found it a little acidic. “Picpoul embodies the beauty of classic southern French wine and has been around for centuries,” explained James. “It’s affordable – you’ll pay around £8 in a supermarket – it’s more balanced than pinot and you’re able to experiment more. China is going mad for it.” Perhaps one to look out for when you’re next after a reasonably priced bottle for a dinner party, then. It may be pertinent to point out at this stage that, as with the non-lab surroundings, there was another vital wine tasting procedure that hadn’t been followed to the letter; there wasn’t a spittoon in sight. “We always spit it out when tasting with professionals; we’d get kicked out if we started swallowing,” James admitted. “Our master of wine – one of only 200 in the world – committed to tasting ten wines each morning, when his palate was at its purest. Obviously, he was tasting, not drinking.” Well, quite. Back to our panel, who had every intention of swallowing, and our second bottle of white. David immediately recognised a Sauvignon Blanc, and Martin correctly

Nose Give the wine a good swirl around the glass to release as many aromas as possible.Wine glasses are tapered to encourage the aromas into your nose and intensify the flavours. Consider if the smell is clean, how intense it is and what aroma you can detect – is it fruity, floral, spicy, vegetal, oak-like or something else? The more complexities you pick up, the higher the quality.
Palate There is much to consider once you’ve taken a sip. Is the wine sweet or dry, acidic or smooth, full-bodied or light, and what flavours can you taste? Is it high or low in tannins – that is, how dry does it feel in your mouth? The length of the flavour is an important sign of quality; the longer it stays, the better. If you’re struggling to pinpoint the taste, look at the colour and think of herbs or fruits associated with it.
“This citrussy version, pale yellow with green tints and aromas of freshly cut flowers, went down well with most of the panel.” suggested an old world appellation – it being not as ‘assertive’ as its New Zealand or Chilean new world counterparts. Of course, they were spot on, and David impressed even James by naming the right region, the Loire Valley. “It’s the difference in terroir (see overleaf for a full explanation of this) that makes old world Sauvignon Blanc so different from new world,” explained James. “And this Pouilly Fumé, along with Sancerre,
is a particularly famous example of the valley. It has elegance, subtlety and balance, as opposed to the floral sweetness and intensity of the new world, and goes very well with seafood and risotto.” Quality counts a lot with Pouilly Fumé and we were warned quite firmly to avoid any priced less than £10. This bottle could be found for £15 or £20 in a supermarket and, from the murmurs of approval, it was clear the panel would be adding it to their next shopping list. The ‘blind’ element of our tasting came into even sharper focus for our third and final white – a lightly sparkling, frizzante-style wine that not one of the panel could identify. Hardly surprising given that this incredibly pale, almost entirely transparent, wine was in fact a Pinot Nero. the Italian Pinot Noir. It seems the answer to ‘can red grapes make white wine?’ is a resounding yes – simply remove the skin. Â

• The general rule of pairing white wine with white meat and fish, and red wine with red meat, should be followed. • One of the best matches for pizza is Prosecco. • A sparkling wine must contain at least one or all three of the following to be classed as Champagne: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier. • Petrol is a genuine tasting note, especially in white wine and particularly with Riesling. • The ‘terroir’ is the most important element of wine making. Though this French word has no direct translation into English, it basically means environment. Soil, sun exposure, wind, proximity to water and rainfall all contribute to the terroir. • The style of the bottle reflects the region in which the wine is produced. It is therefore important to cover the entire bottle, not just the label, when blind tasting. • Sediment in a glass of red wine does not necessarily mean it is of poor quality. • Climate has a huge effect on how strong the alcohol content of wine is. • 98 per cent of European vines were wiped out in the late 1960s due to a virus. This led the way for new world varieties to rise in popularity • Malbec is famous for being Argentinean but it actually originated in France
it struck me that there wasn’t a clear ‘winner’ of our tasting. Almost every wine had been well received by the group, but each person had very different opinions on their favourite. It seemed James was right when he said that your palate is never wrong and one should never judge a person by their preferred wine. Yes, he assured us, even if that wine is Chardonnay.

W
hen in Bakewell, do as the Bakewellians do. Well, that’s the attitude I adopted when I took a drive out through the beautiful Peak District to traditional pub, restaurant and inn, The Ashford Arms. The village pub just outside Bakewell in Ashford-in-the-Water is steeped in history. As trade in the area increased as a result of the local ‘black marble’ quarry, it first opened its doors as the Stags Head Inn in 1764. The name was changed to the Devonshire Arms in 1811 and the inn was run by the Frost family for many years, before eventually changing its name to The Ashford Arms in 1988. Much has changed, but the interior of the pub retains all its traditional charm with dark wooden beams, decorative horse shoes (reminders of their past as a coaching inn) and big open fires. Like any good country pub, the bar is stocked with some fine hand-pulled local ales, as well as a number of lagers, ciders wines and spirits. Inspired by my surroundings, I went with a Peak Ales Bakewell Best Bitter, a dark but easy-todrink beer. My partner and I were seated in the restaurant area where we could look out at the lush green lawn in the beer garden. The restaurant has a number of food-themed days throughout the week including Wednesday’s steak night and award-winning Sunday lunches, but that doesn’t mean you can’t sample these delicious dishes on other days of the week.
We visited on a Monday, and were pleased to find a long list of steaks and sizzling dishes on their full menu, as well as a specials board. I started with the aromatic Thai salmon fishcakes which were crisp and filled with light and fluffy potato, followed by the orange and ginger duck, which arrived sizzling in a sticky and zesty Cointreau sauce. Both were beautiful and full of flavour. My partner started with golden chicken goujons, which came with a zingy lemon mayonnaise, and for his main, he had a tender and juicy fillet steak, which also arrived sizzling on a hot skillet covered in a gorgeous black pepper sauce. I’m not usually a big steak fan, but I was actually quite jealous. Sticking to the local theme, I had the Bakewell frangipane tart for dessert. Served warm, it contrasted nicely with the cold ice cream and is a good compromise for those who want dessert, but don’t want anything overwhelmingly sweet. But yet again, I was jealous of my partner’s sticky toffee pudding with its moist Jamaican ginger cake-like texture and thick icing sugar topping. I was impressed by the speedy service and even more so by the fact that all the food was faultless and served with a smile. And though the night flew by, I didn’t feel rushed. So the next time you want to experience a true Derbyshire pub and taste some local delights in the heart of the Peak District, the award-winning Ashford Arms is the place to go.

Can you stand the heat? So hot it comes with a warning... but should only the brave tackle Prithi Raj’s hot new dish? Words: Chris Wilson
I
tend to raise a cynical eyebrow when menus come with an extreme heat warning. Some restaurants even give individual dishes a chilli rating, with the sight of three or more red devils designed to scare off all but the most foolhardy. Experience shows, regardless of the cuisine on offer, these ratings are usually more a reflection on the restaurateur’s view of the average British diner’s inability to cope with genuinely hot and spicy dishes. Four chillis? Come off it, I’m barely getting a tingle on the tongue here. So it was that two battle-hardened diners, whose own home cooking regime invariably involves a proper blast of heat, blithely ignored the words on the Prithi Raj menu alongside a chef’s special dish called lamb ze zaal. “Warning: extremely hot and flavoursome”. It was there in black and white; the waiter even drew our attention to it, giving us a chance to backtrack and order something less hardcore. But we’d heard it all before. A pair of disaffected teenagers shrugging their shoulders and saying “Meh” could not have been more dismissive. Now I know we’re all grown-ups here: the days of barrelling into an Indian restaurant at chucking-out time, full of beer and misplaced machismo, and ordering the hottest dish on the menu
www.regionalmagazine.co.uk
for the sheer hell of it, have long gone. So I take no pride in saying that I tackled one of the hottest curries I have ever tasted and lived to tell the tale. What I will say is, if you are in the mood for something genuinely spicy, this combination of wild West Indian naga (one of the hottest chillies on the planet), garlic, onions, green pepper, ginger, and lovely lean, tender lamb, will do the trick. Our other main course was equally tasty but more mainstream. King prawn spa-cha, a gorgeous combination of spinach, potato, medium spices, red chillies and juicy prawns, was simply delicious. Side dishes can lift an Indian meal into the truly memorable bracket. In this case, perfectly fluffy nan bread, basmati rice, peas paneer and tarka dhall brought together a winning combination of textures and flavours. The meal began with super-crisp poppadums and the pickle tray. Starters of raj jumbo prawns, marinated, skewered, and cooked in a clay oven, and a mixed kebab of sheek kebab, chicken tikka and onion bhaji eased us nicely into the spicy delights to come. It comes as no surprise to learn that Prithi Raj has been selected by an independent panel of curry connoisseurs to be one of four restaurants in the running to represent Sheffield as a curry capital in National Curry Week in mid-October. Under the watchful eye of owner Mizan Rahman, it certainly continues to maintain the high standards that saw it open to such acclaim four years ago. Prithi Raj has already been named Westside’s best Indian restaurant for the last two years. Is it about to receive another accolade? Time will tell. In the meantime... the heat is on.

The vibrant production runs until 17 October and full-price ticket prices range from £17 to £25, making the £5 ticket deal exceptionally good value. Claire Murray, Sheffield Theatres’ communications and fundraising director, commented: “We want to welcome everyone to the theatre and we appreciate that for our younger audiences, it can seem an expensive night out. We believe that it’s important that everyone has the chance to enjoy great theatre on their doorstep and we’re committed to making our productions more accessible – Live for 5 is just one of the ways we’re doing this.” Live for 5 tickets can be purchased from Sheffield Theatres’ Box Office in-person or by phone on 0114 249 6000. A transaction fee of £1.50 applies to all bookings made at the Box Office (excluding cash). For more details about Live for 5, visit sheffieldtheatres.co.uk.
Record numbers signal salsa success for Leopold Square
Over 2,000 Latin music and dance fans made Salsa in the Square festival the most successful on record. Sheffield city centre’s Leopold Square was packed for the duration of the free, nine-hour extravaganza. There were fears early in 2015 that Salsa in the Square might have to fold after Platillos – the originators of the festival – went out of business. But Cubana, who took over the lease on the building, offered to revive the event and have never looked back. Attendance has nearly doubled since the popular venue took over the Bank Holiday Latin extravaganza and Cubana has just invested £3,000 in an additional new dance floor to keep up with demand. The event was the last of 2015 and offered a live salsa band, salsa lessons, a belly dancer, DJs, dance demos and more. Adrian Bagnoli, co-owner of Cubana, said: “I have to say a big thank you to everyone that has made Salsa in the Square so popular. Live outdoor salsa remains a rare commodity in the UK but it’s fair to say Sheffield now has one of the most popular events of its kind in the country. We’re already looking forward to the event’s return in May 2016.” Cubana tapas bar is situated at Unit 4 Leopold Square, Sheffield S1 2JG. Bookings can be made by calling 0114 276 0475. GCSE success for Bakewell 13 year olds Alexander Stansfield and George Whawell – two 13-year-old Bakewell boys – have gained A grades in GCSE Latin after studying the subject at S. Anselm’s School. Classmate Thomas Wright from Loughborough, also 13, gained A*, while Natalie Gaunt of Grindleford, who was only 12 when she did the exam, also gained an A grade. Latin teacher Mr Hugh Price said: “Brilliant, hardworking children! Latin is a difficult subject and they have gained GCSE success three years ahead of normal schedule.” S. Anselm’s not only caters for boys and girls aged two to 13 years, but has also just opened a college offering GCSE education for 14 to 16 year olds. “S. Anselm’s College is an exciting new venture,” said headmaster Peter Phillips. “We aim to give local students a first-class, all-round experience. This year’s four GCSE Latin candidates from Year 8 were pilot projects and their success bodes well for the future of the college, and the school as a whole.”

Marathon man Tony raises money for charity
Blenheim Park Developments’ operations manager, Tony Meadows, has raised £1,200 for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice by taking part in the Copenhagen Marathon. He ran the 26-mile course in just over four hours. “The pain and suffering was worth every penny that people generously donated to this very worthwhile cause,” said Tony. “I promised myself after that I wouldn’t run another marathon but, after visiting Bluebell Wood to hand over the cheque, I may have to rethink that as the work they do really does deserve the support of everyone in our community.”

Discover the craic With new regular flights from Doncaster Sheffield Airport, there’s never been a better time to explore Dublin. Don’t forget to enjoy a Guinness or two...
R
eligion and alcohol, according to the driver giving a drolly humorous if decidedly non-pc commentary on our Dublin sightseeing bus, have always been the downfall of the Irish people. Next stop, he added without a pause, for St Patrick’s Cathedral and the Guinness Storehouse. Dubliners have a way with words, there’s no denying it; this is a city that is proud of its literary tradition. There are statues and museums commemorating the works of James Joyce, George Bernard Shaw and co., and you only have to settle in with a pint and eavesdrop in one of the many fine pubs to realise that a love of language remains in the blood to this day. But that is just one of the many attractions that make Dublin such a popular short break destination. The Irish capital has
WESTSIDE 126
always been just a short hop across the sea and, now there are regular flights from Doncaster Sheffield Airport, there has never been a better time to explore for yourself. Dublin airport is 12km north of the centre, so it’s only a half-hour journey into the city. Importantly, if you are paying a first visit and don’t want to waste time, it is easy to get your bearings. The city settles snugly into the arc of Dublin Bay and is divided by Stephen’s Green
the River Liffey. The Royal Canal to the north and the Grand Canal to the south roughly contain the city centre. Those hop-on, hop-off tourist charabancs are a pretty good way to get around and they’ll take you to most of the main tourist destinations in the city, but first you need to find good central accommodation and for location and comfort St Stephen’s Green Hotel is hard to beat. This smart, contemporary hotel is in a prime spot, overlooking the nine-acre St Stephen’s Green Park, which is the largest enclosed city square in Europe. It dates back to the 17th century but the layout is pure Victorian with fountains, lawns, mature trees, ducks and a bandstand. The park is ideal for an early morning stroll, just the thing to give you an appetite for the hotel’s splendid full Irish breakfast

which will most definitely set you up for the day. What to do? With so many attractions, it is probably wise to have a few ‘musts’ on your checklist and plan ahead. For those of a partying persuasion (and Dublin is one of the most popular choices for stag and hen dos) this means heading for the cobbled streets of Temple Bar, which are packed with bars and clubs offering refreshments, loud live music and a party atmosphere into the small hours. One sniffy local told me that the closer you get to Temple Bar, the more the price of a pint rises and the chances of hearing a Dublin accent falls. It’s certainly bright and brash but let’s face it, if you are in the city for a big night out, you’ll find what you want here rather than a tour of grand architecture and galleries. If you prefer your night time entertainment with the volume turned down a few notches, the rest of the city is packed with great restaurants and friendly, civilised bars. A couple of great examples are Toners and Donaghey & Nisbett, both on Toner Street, or Peruke and Periwig on Dawson Street. From the pleasant tree-lined squares of Trinity College to the elegant Georgian buildings, there are rewarding views at every turn and one of the best is just a few yards from the hotel. The Little Museum of Dublin is one of the newest, and best, attractions in the city. All the items on display have been donated by Dubliners and to spend an hour in these rooms is a great way to top up your knowledge of Irish history, politics, literature and music. History is everywhere in Dublin, with traces of a tempestuous past all around. For a refresher course in the 1916 uprising and the great famine, a tour of Kilmainham Gaol Museum is warmly recommended. The austere setting may be chillingly familiar; the building’s restoration was funded by renting the venue out as a film set for many famous movies, from The Italian Job to Michael Collins and In The Name of the Father. Another inescapable factor in Dublin’s history is the invention of Guinness, one of the most successful beer brands worldwide. It is now brewed in 60 countries, and remains
A lively night in Temple Bar
the best-selling alcoholic drink in Ireland. The Guinness Storehouse is a huge museum over seven floors that attracts tourists in their thousands from dawn to dusk. The story of how the burnt flavour that is derived from roasted unmalted barley was developed is slickly told, with plenty of interactive elements, and it’s worth the visit just for the fabulous 360-degree views of the city from the glass-domed Gravity Bar on the top floor. You might as well have a taste of the dark stuff while you are here; there’s a ‘free’ pint factored into the price of every ticket. For shoppers, Grafton Street is the place for plush independent stores like the very swanky Brown Thomas. Despite recent economic troubles, there still seems to be a fair bit of money sloshing around, and if you are feeling flush this is the upmarket area to exchange your euros for fancy designer brands in fashion, beauty and homewares. Dining out in Dublin can be pretty highend too. Join the smartly dressed set for delicious steak and seafood in Fire, a fine dining restaurant in an historic building right beside the Lord Mayor of Dublin’s residence, or for something a little less dressy but just as tasty, Fallon & Byrne is a brasserie-style restaurant above a food hall and wine shop. So much to do, so little time… I never did get to see Riverdance, which is still packing the tourists in every night two decades on from that Eurovison moment. Perhaps I missed out; I dare say they’ll carry on dancing for another 20 years.
Factbox: Dublin is a great year-round weekend break location and Aer Lingus Regional operates flights between Doncaster Sheffield Airport and Dublin five times weekly, with lead-in fares from £24.99 each way including taxes and charges. For more information on fares and flight times, visit aerlingus.com. Chris Wilson stayed at St Stephen’s Green Hotel, a smart contemporary hotel in a peaceful location, overlooking the nine-acre St Stephens Green Park. The city’s main attractions are all within easy walking distance. www.ocallaghanhotels.com

Stiff competition Since the launch of the new C63 saloon and estate earlier on in the year there hasn’t been an all-new coupe version – Mercedes were still selling the previous generation model – until now. The coupe is wider than the saloon and has a longer bonnet meaning it’s a more striking proposition on the road. It’s very much a good looking car as it takes styling cues from the S-Class coupe. Like the saloon and estate models, it’s powered by the same 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 found in the AMG GT supercar, only here power is 476hp or 510hp in the C63 S. This gives 0-62mph times of 4.0 and 3.9 seconds respectfully with a 155mph top speed (limited). The M4 now has some seriously stiff competition.
There’s some seriously good-looking new models hitting the roads, Jordan Cutforth picks out some of the most attractive. It’s what’s on the inside that counts
Pick-up line VW have announced a new special edition of their VW Amarok pick-up truck. Priced from £32,220 and only available from VW’s van centre network, this special edition will come with a 178hp 2.0-litre BiTDI engine with the choice of either a six-speed manual gearbox which comes with selectable 4MOTION fourwheel drive or a eight-speed automatic with permanent four-wheel drive as standard. It’ll get bi-xenon headlamps, black rear styling bars, 19-inch ‘Cantera’ alloys, a new protective coating for the load bay and some ‘Atacama’ side decals. Inside you’ll be greeted by Vienna leather upholstery, a newly designed steering wheel, Bluetooth, air-conditioning and satellite navigation which all come as standard. The Amarok Atacama is available now but only 500 examples will ever be built for UK customers.
The Subaru Levorg Sport Tourer is a replacement for the highly regarded Subaru Legacy Tourer. As standard, each model will gain the companies iconic all-wheel drive system made famous by those insane rally cars of the past. Subaru says the Levorg Sport Tourer has the best interior they have ever fitted to car in terms of materials used and the available standard equipment which includes the likes of leather trimmed sport seats and a new seven-inch touchscreen with navigation and communication systems built in. From its September launch, only a 168hp 1.6-litre DIT power unit will be available which produces 40mpg and achieves a 0-62mph time of 8.9 seconds. Boot space equates to 552-litres with seats in place and 1,446-litres with them folded. Priced at £27,495.
Jaguar unleashes the new XF
The all-new Jaguar XF is certainly a very distinctive car. It’s certainly the best looking in the premium executive saloon market. Jaguar has gone away with the wood and leather ambiance of old, instead they’ve brought elegant and crisp modernism to the proceedings with a gloss black swooping centre console and a huge colour touchscreen to minimise the number of apparent dashboard buttons. It comes with a great array of engines which range from 71mpg diesels to 375hp supercharged V6 powerhouses – the same unit found in the F-Type. Interior space has improved over the old car and the new suspension set-up and 80kg weight saving has made the XF as fun to drive as the BMW 5-Series. Available to order now. Priced from £32,300.
