Nous avions l’impression d’être à la fois en Ecosse, en Irlande et dans le sud ouest de mon enfance. Suite à un changement de politique d’aménagement urbain dans le cœur historique d’Amsterdam, nous avons choisi de vendre et de prospecter en Limousin. Notre rêve était de vivre dans un presbytère. Après avoir trouvé la perle rare en Creuse, nous avons commencé par faire des chambres d’hôtes. Mais mon métier, c’était la restauration. C’est pourquoi, à 50 ans, j’ai ouvert à nouveau mon restaurant à taille humaine avec l’envie de surprendre mes nouveaux clients. Ce que je retiens du Limousin au-delà de la beauté du paysage, c’est que les gens prennent le temps, même s’ils semblent fermés, ils sont à l’écoute, prêts à rendre service et ce temps n’est pas forcément de l’argent.
Marc et Iet HOUBEN Agriculteurs bovin, producteurs de fromage Saint-Moreil Après notre formation agricole en Hollande, nous avions le projet de nous installer à notre compte, ce qui est difficile quand on n’est pas originaire d’une famille d’agriculteur. Un ami à nous venait d’acheter une ferme en Limousin, c’est lui qui nous a dit qu’un paysan cherchait à transmettre ses terres. C’est cette opportunité foncière qui nous a fait venir ici. C’était en 1981, on a travaillé un an avec lui, puis il a pris sa retraite. Au début, c’était un peu dur, on a beaucoup travaillé, il fallait apprendre le travail. Aujourd’hui, on ne regrette pas. Ici, la vie est calme, les gens sont simples. Dans le canton, nous sommes les seuls laitiers, on vend notre lait à une coopérative et on produit sur place du fromage de vache : la tomme de Saint-Moreil.

Ariane and Henc SMIT Restaurateurs 25 Grande Rue 23700 Mainsat - 00 33 555 83 16 89 I ran a large French restaurant at the heart of Amsterdam and we used to come to the Limousin on holiday with our son. It was like being in Scotland, Ireland and in the South-West of my childhood all at the same time. Following a change in urban planning policies in the old quarter of Amsterdam we decided to sell up and look for something in the Limousin. Our dream was to live in a presbytery. We found what we were looking for in Creuse and started by setting up a B&B business. However I’m a restaurateur by trade. That’s why, at 50 years old, I have opened my new family-sized restaurant with a desire to surprise my clients. What I like about the Limousin, other than the beautiful countryside, are the locals: they take their time and, even if they seem reticent, they are always ready to listen to you, and help you if they can.
Marc and Iet HOUBEN Cattle breeder and cheese producer Saint-Moreil After our agricultural studies in Holland, we decided to set up our own farm but found it quite difficult because we don’t come from a farming family. A friend of ours had recently bought a farm in the Limousin and told us about a farmer who was looking for someone to take on his farm. That was the opportunity that attracted us to the Limousin. That was in 1981. We worked with him for one year and then he retired. In the beginning we found it quite hard; it was a lot of work and we needed to learn the trade. Today we have absolutely no regrets because the Limousin is peaceful and the people are not complicated. In our district we are the only milk producers; the milk goes to a cooperative and we also make a cow’s milk cheese called Tomme de SaintMoreil.

L’envie de rechercher une autre façon de vivre, d’avoir plus d’espace, c’était notre principale motivation. A 30 ans, nous sommes venus passer une semaine de vacances en Limousin et avons eu le coup de cœur pour une maison, une grange et un peu de terrain dans le village de Treignac. Non sans difficultés, nous avons créé une entreprise de production de plantes vivaces, d’entretien des jardins et un mini-camping avec 6 emplacements. Il a aussi fallu apprendre le français, comprendre le système administratif et acquérir la confiance des clients, mais le bouche à oreille a bien fonctionné. En 2007, nous avons décidé de développer une nouvelle activité : la vente de meubles de jardin. Le Limousin est une région où les gens sont plus gentils que dans le sud de la France. La vie y est agréable mais il faut faire des efforts : apprendre le français, être travailleur et s’adapter aux habitudes locales. Nous sommes prêts à conseiller les Hollandais qui souhaiteraient venir s’installer en France, les aider, voire les rencontrer.

Et pourtant, en 2006, j’ai pris une grande décision : créer ma propre activité et m’installer à la campagne. A cette époque-là, je vivais dans le nord de la France. La recherche de la maison idéale dans un lieu idéal m’a conduite dans le Limousin, et plus précisément dans le Pays de Guéret. J’ai 34 ans et cela fait maintenant plus de deux ans que je vis ici. J’en suis enchantée. Mes voisins m’ont réservé un accueil chaleureux et j’ai reçu une aide de la Région Limousin afin de créer ma société, Greenberry communication : j’offre des prestations de traduction et, bien que je vive dans un petit hameau de campagne, je dispose d’une connexion Internet haut débit. Je profite de ma chance de vivre dans une si belle campagne : pratiquement tous les jours, je vais marcher (les bois sont tout prêt de la maison) ou faire du vélo. J’ai découvert de nombreux insectes et animaux que je n’avais jamais vus auparavant, j’ai appris à ramasser les champignons, je fais la cueillette des mûres, je récolte des herbes pour le thé, j’ai découvert le clair de lune (incroyable comme c’est lumineux). Je vis dans un lieu unique où je me sens heureuse.

We felt it was time for a change and started to look for somewhere with more space. When we were 30 years old we came to the Limousin on holiday and fell in love with a house which had a barn and some land in the village of Treignac. Not without difficulty we set up our business growing perennial plants, doing gardening and we also set up a mini-campsite with 6 pitches. Moreover we had to learn French, learn about French administrative procedures and establish a loyal clientele. Word of mouth really helped us get clients. In 2007 we decided to increase our business by selling garden furniture. The people of the Limousin region seem to be more welcoming than those of the South of France. Life is pleasant but you have to make an effort; you need to learn French, be a good worker and adapt yourself to the local way of life. We are willing to advise any Dutch people who are thinking about moving to France, meet them if need be.

I am 34 years old and I have been living here for more than two years now. And I enjoy it a lot. The welcome from my neighbours was warm and I get some help from the Limousin region to create my company, Greenberry communication: I offer translation services and although I live in a small hamlet in the countryside I have a broadband internet connection. I am taking advantage of living in such a beautiful countryside: almost every day I go walking (the woods are just around the corner of the house) or biking, I discovered many insects and animals I had never seen before, I learnt to go to collect mushrooms, I pick up blackberries, I collect some herbs for tea, I discovered the moon light – amazing how strong it is. I live in a very unique place where I feel happy.
