Team Philosophy The Regis Jesuit High School girls basketball program sets a standard to which each and every player aspires. Following principles that have set the Raiders apart, we adhere to the quote, “With every right there must be a positive responsibility.” From our inaugural season in 2004-05, the program has remained devoted to the ideal of “giving” before “getting.” This is a tried-and-true formula for success. Giving of one’s self, giving to a teammate, giving back to the game and giving for the program….and that has set our standard!

Our players play fast and aggressive--the same way the will need to respond to many life situations--and have found success in this approach. The goal is to provide a positive atmosphere in which, by the way they react to the challenges faced on the court, the girls are strengthened in their role as responsible citizens.

2019-20 Coaching Staff Head Coach - Carl Mattei Coach Carl was a four-sport athlete at McNair Senior Secondary in Richmond, BC Canada (soccer, volleyball, basketball and track) and named male athlete of the year. He played volleyball and basketball collegiately at Trinity Western University. The summer after graduation he played with Athletes and Action and was then hired to coach the women’s basketball team at his alma mater. He later went on to become the Head Coach at Colorado Christian University and University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. He first started coaching girls high school basketball in 1998 at Douglas County and was there three years. Carl started the Mile HI Magic girls basketball club in 1999 and placed over 300 players in college programs to date. Carl was named Coach of the Year (seven times), he was the Dave Sanders 2014 Recipient, invited to the USA Coaches Tour of Africa (2008 & 2009) with WNBA players and coaches, All-American Camp Director 2008 and 2009, WBCA District 7 All-American Rep (2011 to Present) and has been the Regis Jesuit’s girls coach from the first day in 2004. He has his masters degree from UCCS in Coaching Administration and has also coached volleyball, ice hockey and lacrosse. He has been married to his wife, Kim for 30 years. They have two kids – Kaity (28) and Colton (26). Colton is the junior varsity lacrosse coach at Regis Jesuit after playing NCAA I at Mercer University. Carl became an American citizen on April 18, 2013. His record at Regis Jesuit is 376-105 over 15 1/2 seasons. I coach because: I enjoy providing an opportunity that takes each player on a journey each season which provides, fun, trials/tribulations, friendship, laughs, tears, travel and competition as they become one mind, one soul, one spirit…ONE TEAM! Favorite memory: Being part of the first girls ally-oop dunk in the history of the girls game when Gracie Weigand stole the ball, fed it up to Avery Van Sickle, who laid the perfect assist to the high flying Francessca Belibi who threw down a thunderous dunk vs a League opponent. My coaching philosophy: Play fast and furious. Aggressive and quick is fun for the players and fans.
Favorite motivational quote: “Talent wins games, but Teamwork and Intelligence wins Championships.” - Michael Jordan Inspirational figure: Jesus Favorite tv show: Hocky Night in Canada Favorite music/band: Amos Lee/ Ray Lamontagne Favorite professional team: Vancouver Canucks Favorite professional athlete: Elias Pettersson/ Zion Williamson Favorite food: Fish n Chips Favorite dessert: Chocolate/Peanut Butter What is your pre-game ritual: Grab a Starbucks latte
Coach Archie Chaney Archie is originally from Chicago and attended the University of Notre Dame. He earned his MBA from the University of Colorado Denver. Archie met his wife in Colorado and they have three children together. Coaching for: Head coach - JV Favorite memory from coaching at RJ: My favorite Regis memory is from last season. Watching the varsity team gel as they did at the end of the season and make it all the way to final four. That was a goal of theirs and they achieved it. My coaching philosophy: Play defense, always compete, and have fun. Favorite motivational quote: “Sometimes we are tested not to show our weaknesses, but to discover our strengths.” Inspirational figure: Muhammed Ali Favorite athlete: Michael Jordan Favorite tv show: ESPN and Mad Money with Jim Cramer Favorite professional team: Chicago Bulls Favorite professional player: Retired - Michael Jordan; Current – Lebron James Favorite food: Steak Favorite dessert: I do not have a favorite dessert Pregame Ritual: Ask all of my players how their day was. Provide words of encouragement if their day was challenging. I also try to make sure I eat some skittles or Mike N Ike candy as I watch the other team warm-up to see who we need to be aware of.

She coached the freshman team last year, and is excited to be coaching the sophomore team this year. Coaching for: Sophomore Coach I coach because... I love basketball and can share that passion with others when I coach! Watching players improve and deepen their love for the sport and watching a team become a family are the best parts about being a coach. Favorite memory from coaching at RJ: Winning the league title with an undefeated record with my JV Team in LA. My coaching philosophy... Hard work, hustle, and playing as a team are the keys to success. She married Regis Jesuit graduate, Patrick Finegan (her very own Hallmark movie husband), in May. They met on a basketball court and still enjoy playing together weekly!
Coach Diani Akigbogun ‘14 Diani Akigbogun was born and raised in Aurora, Colorado and graduated from Regis Jesuit High School. Following graduation, she decided to move back to Denver to help coach the RJHS Girls Basketball Team. Coaching for: Varsity assistant coach; Freshmen head coach Favorite Memory from coaching at RJ: The first away tournament of the year in California because it set the precedent for the rest of the year, and because I got to get to know the players outside of the basketball arena. My coaching philosophy: Focuses on the intangibles, detail orientation, and maxing out on effort; because the things that effect the game the most, doesn’t always show up on the stat sheet. Bennett Inspirational Figure: Maya Angelou Favorite TV Show: This is Us Favorite Music: A variety of genres Favorite Professional Player: LeBron James Favorite Food: Hotwings Favorite Dessert: Chocolate Cake Pre-game ritual: Getting my mind locked in and making sure that the girls are prepared and ready to play.
