PRESIDENT'S REPORT

THE IMPACT OF GIVING 2022-23

OUR MISSION Regis Jesuit High School —a Catholic educational community— engages the gifts of young men and women in a single-sex environment, fosters faith in Jesus Christ and promotes justice and mercy, develops critical minds and nurtures compassionate hearts to serve others – all for the greater glory of God.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

As this year’s President’s Report is being developed, we stand on the precipice of a new milestone in the continued development and evolution of Regis Jesuit High School with the opening of the Science & Innovation Center. I admit the feeling of satisfaction I have about realizing a vision that probably first emerged about 10 years ago, just as the Steele Center was being completed. Educators, after all, are seed planters. Most often we do not get to see the results of our work. And so there is something very satisfying about reaching the culmination of a large, complicated effort in such a concrete way. But when I consider the deeper meaning of new buildings in the life journey of an institution, I am consistently moved by the belief that individual donors place in the aspirational vision of a school like Regis Jesuit. I am reminded of and humbled by the particularly audacious belief of some of our first donors to this $36 million project. We are grateful for all the support we have received and especially for the earliest apostles to the vision. I find myself thinking about those who built the first Regis building in the Denver-metro area in the late 19th century. It probably seemed just as large in scale, if not larger, and this was for a vision that had no track record in this city! 100 years later, I sat under its roof learning algebra. Who were those faithful people that ensured not just the roof over my head, but a place of

learning, growing and developing? How did they come to believe that the emerging young people would dedicate their lives to the service of the common good? Did they have any idea that they were providing the foundation for the next 150 years? And the milestones we can mark in between these two guideposts are no less inspiring. Moving the high school from the Regis University campus in 1990 was a leap of faith. When Regis Jesuit first moved to Parker and Arapahoe Roads at that time, it might well have been referenced as the little school on the prairie. Expanding the mission to include young women in 2003 was insightful, bold and courageous. Today, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Girls Division, some 3000 girls have received the gift of a Catholic, Jesuit education. And the completion of the Steele Center in 2014 reminded us of the importance of the arts in the formation of the whole person, but it also reminded us that the essence of Regis Jesuit is its community, and it created the place where the community would come together. Each of these milestones are characterized by an abundant and abiding faith, and each has enabled students new and transformative opportunities. Regis Jesuit High School and its community are a testament and living expression of the Gospel itself – belief in the Word as a means to new life.

In January, as our students pour into the hallways, classrooms and learning spaces of our new Science & Innovation Center, they will continue this great testament and tradition as they engage in applied learning opportunities that may be of service to the common good and our common home. Perhaps the greatest gift we can give our students is a deep and abiding sense of their purpose, and the joy and satisfaction that comes with solving problems, or even attempting to solve problems, that make a difference to others. As we stand on this latest precipice, we wish to express our profound gratitude to our community of support who has helped us keep this testament and living tradition truly alive.

The Raider Opportunity Fund provided 338 awards to 201 students, totaling $222,123, which assisted them with schoolrelated costs beyond tuition, including: meal plans; school transportation; uniforms; school supplies; and sport, club or service fees/travel.

BUILDING A LEGACY OVER

GENERATIONS

The history of Regis Jesuit High School is long – we proudly place “Founded 1877” in some of our logos to ensure our community members understand the length of our history and the depth of our traditions. But some parents need no primer when they send their daughter or son to attend Regis Jesuit because their connection to the school dates back a generation, or two, or three.

Dan McCallin ’67 was one of those parents when he sent his sons Conor ’98 and Colin ’96 to Regis Jesuit. He needed no introduction to the school as he was a third generation Raider, his grandfather, Andrew P. McCallin 1902, attending in the first years of the 20th century when the school was known as Sacred Heart College, and his uncle, Joseph A. McCallin, SJ ’29, coming next – embracing our Jesuit mission so profoundly that he himself became a Jesuit. “There was no doubt that I would go to Regis,” McCallin says. “And when the acceptance letter finally came, I was so proud that I sat on my porch waiting for my dad to come home so I could show him.” He attended Regis Jesuit when it was located on the Regis University (then Regis College) campus in North Denver. When the time came for his boys to attend high school, there was again no doubt he wanted them at Regis Jesuit, on the new Campbell Campus in Aurora. The McCallin family did not end their involvement after each generation graduated. Dan and his wife, Eileen, both served on the Board of Trustees and Council of Regents and Conor is a current member of the Board. “I could never have imagined how involved I’d become,” says McCallin.

REGIS JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL

And that involvement came at a pivotal time for the school, just over 20 years ago. Dan McCallin served as the Chair of the Long-Range Planning Committee, tasked with creating a master plan to create more space to meet the growing need for Catholic education in the Denver area. A plan was developed to remodel the existing building to fit more students, until another idea came along: why not serve young women by creating a Girls Division? The idea was discussed amongst the Board and the Jesuits, who led a discernment that guided their decision-making. The vote came in and it was decided: Regis Jesuit would become home to young women who sought a Catholic, Jesuit education in Denver.

“Bringing girls on campus was the most positive change I saw at Regis Jesuit in my years on the Board,” McCallin says. It took years of planning and fundraising, and the new Boys Division building was completed in 2004, allowing girls to move into the renovated original building. Dan McCallin is adamant about the community-wide effort it took to get the place up and running. Leaders from the Regis Jesuit community brought their talents and passions to create the best experience for girls and maintain and improve the experience for boys. And now, 20 years later, we have record numbers of young women enrolled at Regis Jesuit, and our alumnae are leaders in fields from engineering to the arts. And after all that, the McCallin family is still not done with RJ. With the building of the Science & Innovation Center, Dan and Eileen McCallin were inspired to † Deceased

support the effort and name a space within: the McCallin Alumni Center. “It fits our family legacy, what we have been and will be. I’m very proud of it,” McCallin says. The new Center will be home to Alumni Engagement and RJ Connect – a professional networking and career-centric community for all Regis Jesuit alumni. This new space will facilitate alumni to student mentorships, professional growth and fellowship. McCallin is excited to get into the Science & Innovation Center and see our alumni giving back and using their time and talents to form the next generation of Raiders. “I could never have imagined what this campus has become,” he says. “Not only is the Science & Innovation Center a front door for Regis Jesuit, it is state-of-the-art, it is a game-changer.” Come visit campus and see the McCallin Alumni Center in action soon!

GOING TO THE FRONTIER

Celebrating 20 Years of the Girls Division at RJ By Nicolette (Howell) Bearden ’07 As the youngest of three children, I have always benefited from the guidance of my two older siblings. From solving tricky math problems to selecting college courses as a freshman, they eagerly shared their wisdom. My elder brother, Ken, the only boy in the family, was a true role model for me. He is the most intelligent and methodical person I know. When he chose to attend Regis Jesuit for high school, I wanted to do the same. Ken commenced his high school journey in 1998, predating the establishment of the Girls Division. Despite RJ being an all-boys school at the time, my desire to attend remained unwavering. Over the course of his four years at the school, I grew increasingly interested in the RJ experience. Our family actively engaged with the school, whether volunteering together at Diversity Day with our homemade Greek pastries or attending Ken’s baseball games. RJ seamlessly integrated into our family life. My mother fondly recalls her weekly volunteering during office hours, which students endearingly referred to as "cookie break," reminiscing how she instantly felt part of the community with other mothers. Additionally, I learned from my brother about how he loved his classes, teachers and the brotherhood among his classmates. I fervently hoped, prayed and even wrote a letter to the administration urging them to allow young women to attend. Unbeknownst to me, the process of creating a Girls Division was already underway. In the fall of 2003, Regis Jesuit opened its doors to young women, perfectly timed for my freshman year—an answered prayer. Reflecting on that moment, I asked my father about his realization that he could send not only his son but also one of his daughters to RJ. He recalls, "We were so excited! This is something that we hoped for, and it felt so good

to have our youngest child not only receive the same incredible education as her brother, but also be part of something new, something special. To be a trailblazer!" As I had foreseen as a nine-year-old observing my brother's high school career begin, I cherished every moment of my Regis Jesuit experience. Being part of the first graduating class of girls to have attended all four years was undeniably special, a lesson that has grown more profound with adulthood. Returning to Regis Jesuit last year as a staff member in the Marketing Office, I've spent considerable time reacquainting myself with the institution through an adult lens. I am even more appreciative of the opportunity I had during my student years. Back then, I sensed the uniqueness of Jesuit traditions and values during experiences like Kairos and the service immersion program. Now, as an adult, I hold a deeper appreciation for those elements that left an enduring impact on shaping my life – the principles of cura personalis (care for the whole person), magis – striving for qualitative improvement to better honor God and embodying a spirit of being a Woman with and for Others. When I inquired about the impact of a Jesuit education on his life, my brother, now a cardiac surgeon, remarked, "Regis was the pivotal stepping stone to my career as a heart surgeon. The community, academic rigor and social development were instrumental in my subsequent success in undergrad, med school and beyond." A sentiment I wholeheartedly echo. As alumni, my brother and I agree that our high school years established a sturdy foundation for exactly how to live our lives. I remain eternally grateful to the Jesuits, Board of Trustees and school leaders for their courage and prayerful discernment in responding to the call to venture into new frontiers by establishing the Girls Division. Their decision profoundly impacted my life and the lives of all the young women who have graduated since then. 2022-23 PRESIDENT'S REPORT

FOR MAKING THIS MILESTONE MOMENT POSSIBLE

Students, faculty, staff and special guests celebrated the student ribbon cutting and blessing of the new Science & Innovation Center during the school day on December 5.

The Science & Innovation Center officially opens for the spring 2024 semester, welcoming all our 1700 young men and women to contemplate, collaborate and create together. This building is more than modern learning spaces and innovation-oriented classrooms, it is the new, central front door of campus. Home to Magis Hall, the McCallin Alumni Center, Our Lady of the Way Chapel, the Innovation Center, RJ Media, physics, biology, and chemistry classrooms – the 65,000 sq. ft. Science & Innovation Center will transform the RJ experience for every student, alum and community member who steps onto campus.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Endowed scholarships at Regis Jesuit High School help provide financial aid to talented students with qualified need. The donors of these scholarships have made a significant investment to ensure future generations of Raiders can attend and benefit from a Regis Jesuit education. A named endowed scholarship requires a minimum contribution of $100,000 over five years, with an initial gift of $20,000. Once the fund is established, Regis Jesuit takes out 4% of the twelve-quarter rolling average of the fund to award each year. Agape Scholarship

ENDOWMENT HISTORY INITIAL FUNDING in 1993 Regis Jesuit High School receives approval from Jesuit Province for the creation of an endowment in support of financial aid.

Established with an initial gift of $550,000 from the Jesuits after sale of property in Frasier, CO.

GIVING IMPACT

BRIAN ‘66 AND BONNIE O’MEARA— Honoring a Family Legacy and Jesuit Education

Brian O’Meara’s family connections drew him to Regis Jesuit for high school. Brian shared, “I went to Regis starting 1962. I was so excited to go to the High School that my dad, four uncles and four cousins had gone to. Many of my family members experienced the toughness of one faculty member, Fr. Krieger, S.J. and he already had expectations of me. Fr. Krieger and the Jesuits taught me how to take criticism and learn from my mistakes.” After high school Brian played in a rock/blues band which was successful in the seven-state region. He attended Denver University and graduated with a BSBA degree in marketing and accounting. In 1968 Brian’s band had made enough money for Brian to ask his dad to buy into the family company. Since 1968 Brian has managed their family business—O’Meara Motors—which was formed in 1913 by his grandfather. Brian has managed the company for 55 of its 110 years. Brian has a deep respect for the Jesuits and the education he received. “Regis and the Jesuits have a legacy as great educators. I have met many people from around the world who were trained by the Jesuits. All have similar stories. Students are expected to excel in all endeavors—Scholastically, athletically and in community involvement. Bonnie and I chose to put Regis in our will because Regis stands out in education and educating the whole person.”

2022 ST. JOHN FRANCIS REGIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD HONOREES LISA GOODWIN

ERIC AND JANE CAHN

Lisa Goodwin’s relationship with Regis Jesuit predates her time as a parent to sons Kyle and Will and has extended far beyond their respective 2015 and 2019 graduations.

Eric and Jane Cahn joined the Regis Jesuit community when their son Kevin stepped onto campus in 2000 and continued their involvement with the school long after Kevin graduated.

Lisa serves as executive director of the Donahue Family Foundation, which was started in 1990 by her father, William, to provide tuition assistance at Catholic schools for economically disadvantaged youth. Today, the Donahue Family Foundation distributes hundreds of thousands of dollars in support of Catholic education. Beyond her role at the foundation, Lisa has been a consummate volunteer for our athletics program. Her dedicated and capable support as a team mom for her own kids’ sports developed into a passion to help several other programs. Lisa leveraged her graphic design skills to manage team social media accounts and develop media guides for several of our athletic programs, helping our coaches to keep our community informed by sharing scores, highlights and stories. Her commitment to honoring her father’s legacy of providing opportunities for a Catholic education to deserving young people, combined with her genuine care for our student-athletes and their families have each contributed to the mission and life of Regis Jesuit in extraordinary ways.

Together, Eric and Jane served on Regis Jesuit’s Parent Diversity Committee all four years that their son Kevin was enrolled and served as Co-Chairs during the 2003-04 school year. Working with and for others to promote and provide a sense of belonging, especially among the most marginalized, has been their lives’ vocation. Eric was a Holocaust survivor who immigrated with his sister to Denver in 1950. After he retired, he spent his time as an educator raising awareness about the Holocaust and its connection to current world events by speaking across the United States, including at Regis Jesuit every year since 2006. His stated mission: to bear witness to the Holocaust and to acknowledge and honor those who risked their lives to save the lives of people like him by sharing his story. Eric passed away in September 2022 at the age of 84. However, Jane and his family continue to carry his legacy forward, making the world a better place through education and combatting intolerance. We were humbled to honor Eric posthumously and Jane with the St. John Francis Regis Award.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

What a difference a year can make! Just about this time last year, I looked out on the beginning framework of a dusty construction site at the heart of campus, and now it is a fully formed reality! On December 5, the students, faculty, staff and special guests of Regis Jesuit celebrated the ribbon cutting and blessing of the new Science & Innovation Center, marking another milestone moment in Regis Jesuit’s nearly 150-year history of forming young men and women. Like you, I can’t wait to see our 1700 students experiencing this remarkable space when they return for classes on January 9! While providing innovative learning environments is critical to a collegeprep education, these facilities are second to the students and faculty they serve. As someone who is passionate about ensuring students who desire a Catholic, Jesuit education have access to this life-changing opportunity, I remain proud of Regis Jesuit’s robust financial aid position. Additionally, we continue to invest in attracting and retaining exceptional teachers who foster in their students intellectual, moral and spiritual growth. To remain committed to these values, we need to continue to build the school’s endowment as a funding priority of Inspire & Ignite 2025. As the endowment increases, it creates direct relief in our annual operating budget to meet these growing costs that are central to carrying out our mission. The Board of Trustee’s role at Regis Jesuit is to continue to identify the needs of our community and ensure we have the resources in place to

fulfill our mission promise—to form students who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and committed to doing justice by the time they graduate. As I watch my own two RJ grads and their classmates navigate the world as young adults, I remain convinced that the work we do at Regis Jesuit inspires our students to live purposeful and fulfilling lives of leadership and service to others. Regis Jesuit’s momentum this year led to many successes and milestone moments captured in this report. These milestones are possible solely because the entire RJ community rallied together, pitched in, sacrificed and recommitted themselves to the greater good. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am grateful for the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty, administrators, alumni, volunteers, and donors who continue to accompany us every step of the way in this vision for a hope-filled future at Regis Jesuit. CLOSING THE OPERATIONAL BUDGET GAP Philanthropic gifts were used to help fund the FY22-23 operating budget as well as advance the strategic vision of the school. See page 6 for total fundraising revenues including cash gifts, pledge commitments and in-kind support. The payout of $906,751 from the school's endowment for the FY2223 went toward helping to offset financial aid and other operational costs. See page 35 for more information on the endowment. The Regis Jesuit Board of Trustees, Audit & Finance Committee and Administration continue to focus on effective financial management in order to best support our mission and minimize increases in tuition.
