Team Philosophy The philosophy of the Boys Swim & Dive Team at Regis Jesuit High School is to maintain the highest level of excellence in the sport of swimming and diving and in all aspects of life. Our goal is to be the best team in the state of Colorado and to be among the best teams in the country. To achieve this goal, we aspire to maintain the following objectives: 1. Focus on academics as the top priority. 2. Involve as many students as possible in a fun, safe, challenging and rewarding experience. 3. Have every swimmer and diver achieve lifetime best performances every season. 4. Keep hard work, mastery of fundamentals and selfless attitudes as the trademarks of the program. 5. Make every effort to secure college scholarships for senior swimmers and divers. 6. Following the Jesuit tradition, we look to provide an atmosphere where a young man can be challenged physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. Swimmers and divers are encouraged to take part in a variety of pursuits. 7. Model attitudes of confidence and avoid attitudes and displays of cockiness. 8. Swim and dive at the highest level of competition possible as designated by CHSAA classification guidelines. 9. Maintain a program free of drugs and alcohol. Swimming and diving are a privilege and using these substances will result in losing that privilege.

What We Must Do To Win In The Water 1. Make winning touchouts a habit. 2. Develop habits in practice which will not allow for disqualifications. 3. Always swim smart races. Know yourself, your race and your competition. 4. Master the fundamentals of the sport of swimming: starts, strokes, turns and finishes.
At Practice 1. B e where you are supposed to be, when you are supposed to be there, ready to do what is supposed to be done. 2. Don‘t cut corners. Do all the yardage on all of the sets. Use the pace clock correctly. Go hard when you are told to go hard, easy when you are to go easy. Be honest. No cheating. 3. Maintain the confidence that Regis Jesuit swimmers and divers have worked harder and are better prepared than the competition. 4. Use the other swimmers and divers on the team. Train hard against them. Learn by watching what they do. 5. Take sit-ups, stretching and lifting weights seriously.
At Meets 1. R emember that you are a member of the Regis Jesuit Swim & Dive team. You are representing your school and the proud tradition of Regis Jesuit swimmers and divers who came before you. Act like it! 2. If you are at a Regis Jesuit meet and you choose to wear a cap, it is a Regis Jesuit cap. Your suit is a Regis Jesuit suit, your shirt a Regis Jesuit shirt. Remember who you are and why you are there. 3. Your place is with the team. Others will be supporting you and you need to support them. Your place is NOT in the stands. 4. If our team is swimming or diving, you need to be there. A JV swimmer or diver is expected to show up and cheer for the State Meet. Likewise, every state qualifier is expected to be cheering loudly at the A and B league meets.

In School 1. After morning practice, comb your hair and be on time for class. 2. Your first priority at Regis Jesuit is to get good grades. Remember that poor grades will keep you out of swimming and diving and out of good colleges. 3. H old yourself accountable and expect to be held to the highest standards of accountability. 4. Do not sleep in class.
In General 1. W e must DOMINATE our opponent physically and mentally. 2. We must retain poise in the face of a bad break. 3. We must be in better shape than our opponents. 4. W e must have a burning desire to win within the rules of the sport. 5. W hen we walk into a pool, EXPECT to win and then do what it takes.
Guidelines & Expectations 1. E very swimmer or diver is expected to contribute to the betterment of the team. 2. A ny outside competition which affects the Regis Jesuit swim team, i.e. practices or meets, must first be cleared with the Regis Jesuit coaches. 3. S wimmers or divers may be removed from the team for failing to follow team rules or conduct detrimental to the welfare of the team. 4. I f a swimmer or diver has any concerns which affects his status on the team, he should open a line of communication with any member of the coaching staff with whom he can relate this difficulty. Should a swimmer or diver decide to remove himself from the team, he should relay this directly to the head coach.
No Excuses, No Regrets.

Regis Jesuit Records in Red *In order to qualify for State under the 6 dive standard, the diver must meet the qualifying standard two times during the season. To qualify under the 11 dive standard, the diver must meet the qualifying standard only once during the season. **Each year, the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) publishes individual event and relay qualifying times for both “automatic” and “consideration” designations. The “automatic” standard is the 80th place time averaged over the past three years. The “consideration” standard is the top 150th place time averaged over the past three years. When a swimmer achieves the automatic qualifying time in a regularly scheduled interscholastic meet (up to and including State meet performances), he is an “Automatic All-American.” At the end of the qualifying year, only the top 100 swimmers from the combined automatic and consideration lists are designated as “All-American.” Those achieving the consideration time but not finishing in the top 100 receive the designation “All-American Consideration.” A swimmer may be listed in as many events as his times qualify. Relay teams are limited to 4 swimmers only and only 1 relay team per event per school may qualify. ***Times achieved at high altitudes are adjusted downward by NISCA to insure equitable comparison with those times achieved at sea-level. The times above are calculated using a NISCA spreadsheet but, for your swimmers‘ purpose, use as a guideline only.

Elijah Warren won individual gold in the 100 breast with an All-American Elijah Warren ‘18, State Meet 2016 time and new team record. The 200 free relay team of Fisher Basham ‘16, Alex Strepman, Nick Norie ‘16 and Simon Barshay also achieved an All -American time.
2017 March Regis Jesuit took first place at the Dick Rush Coaches Invite swim meet at VMAC. Clark Smith ‘13 set NCAA, American and U.S. Open records while winning the 500 free at the NCAA Men‘s Swimming and Diving Championships. Two days later, he won the 1650 in NCAA and American record time. May Twenty-seven swimmers and two divers qualified and competed at the 5A State Championships held at VMAC. The team came in second for the third year in a row with 253 points. All-American swims were achieved by Ty Coen ‘18 (100 fly and 100 back), Will Goodwin ‘19 (200 IM) and Elijah Warren ‘18 (100 breast) as well as in the 200 medley relay (Goodwin, Coen, Warren and Alex Strepman ‘17). Their time of 1:31.35 set a new team record. The 400 free relay of Coen, TJ Miller ‘18, Sam Jones ‘18, and Warren also achieved an All-American time.
2018 March Regis Jesuit took first place at the Dick Rush Coaches Invite swim meet at VMAC for the second year in a row. April Participating in the Mustang Invite, Regis earned fourteen state qualifying times allowing more swimmers to taper for state instead of leagues. May (Summary excerpt from Courtney Oakes, Aurora Sentinel and Sentinel Colorado). A season after Regis Jesuit finished 105 points behind Fossil Ridge, the Raiders topped the SaberCats by 4.5 points in a battle of programs that have developed the utmost respect for each other over the last handful of seasons. Elijah Warren ‘18 won individual state championships in the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and swam the breaststroke leg on the meet-opening win in the 200 medley relay.
June Alec Scott ‘11, Clark Smith ‘13 and Hennessey Stuart ‘14 qualified to compete in the 2016 Olympic Swim Trials. Stuart finaled and placed eighth in 200 back and Smith placed sixth in 200 free which earned him a place on the 2016 Olympic swim team roster for the 4 x 200 free relay. Regis Jesuit Boys Swim & Dive Highlights Regis Jesuit was projected to finish second to Fossil Ridge for a fourth straight season according to PrepSwimCo.com‘s rankings based on the pre-meet psych sheets, which showed a 57-point margin between the teams. That margin tightened up to 20 following an outstanding prelim session for the Raiders, which ended with what turned out to be a key result when Will Kerscher ‘20 touched out Hinkley‘s Nathan Leigh in a 200 IM swim-off for the last spot in the championship finals. That result meant at least two more points going into the championship finals and the team counted on every one of those points. The Raiders opened the championship finals with an energizing performance in the 200 medley relay, which saw a great leadoff backstroke turned in by Ty Coen ‘18 — who was cleared only days earlier to return to the pool following a broken hand he suffered in practice — followed by Warren‘s breaststroke, Jackson Gurley ‘20 swam fly and Will Goodwin ‘19 swam the fastest 50 free relay split of the meet with a 20.18. That finish gave Regis Jesuit an Automatic All-American time of 1 minute, 30.52 seconds, enough to set the Colorado and 5A state meet record by just 0.01 of a second. Cherry Creek clocked a 1:30.53 in 2013. Goodwin then turned in a runner-up finish behind Danny Kovac of Fossil Ridge in the 200 IM in an All-American time and Warren, who was seeded second behind Mountain Range‘s Lane Austin in the 50 freestyle coming in, captured his second career state championship with a time of 20.68 seconds. Diver Quinn Henninger ‘21 was runner-up behind three-time state champion Octavio Lucero of Bear Creek in the diving competition and helped Regis Jesuit‘s cause. The team trailed by just six points after six events. Coen turned in a career-best individual performance with his second-place finish in the 100 backstroke behind Columbine‘s Gavin Olson then Warren and Goodwin went 1-2 in the breaststroke — with All-American times of 55.01 and 55.80 seconds, respectively — to make it just a 1.5-point spread for Fossil Ridge with one event left. The SaberCats were easily the No. 1 seed in the event after prelims with a nearly four-second cushion over the Raiders, but Coen led off, Elliot Steinberg ‘18 pushed Regis Jesuit out to a lead and Goodwin added to it before Warren jumped in to finish.

Fossil Ridge‘s Kovac closed near the end but couldn‘t catch the Raiders‘ star at the end and the Raiders finished in an All-American time. All told, the Raiders won four events and achieved seven All-American performances. It was their 22nd team state championship. Elijah Warren ‘18 was named Colorado Swimmer of the Year.
August Twenty-nine members of the Regis Jesuit boys and girls swim and dive teams partcipated in the inaugural Swim Across America 5K swim in Denver benefitting Children‘s Hospital.
2019
March Regis Jesuit took first place at the Dick Rush Coaches Invitational. Senior Will Goodwin ‘19 was awarded the Hoyt Brawner Award. May Twenty-seven swimmers and a record six divers qualified for the 5A state meet that took place at VMAC. While all of them competed valiantly and had many lifetime best performances, it was not enough to match up with the depth of Cherry Creek. The Bruins won their first state championship since 1994 and Regis Jesuit finished second by just over 100 points. Quinn Henninger ‘21 was the diving champion and Will Goodwin ‘19 placed first in 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, breaking a state record by just .01 in the later. The medley relay (Sean Carr ‘20, Goodwin, Jack Clouatre ‘19 and Will Kerscher ‘20) and 400 free relay (Gio Aguirre ‘22, Sawyer Inglis ‘21, Kerscher and Goodwin) both took second place while achieving Automatic All-American times. Goodwin achieved Automatic All-American times in both of his individual events as well.

Regis Jesuit All-Americans What is an All-American Swimmer? Each year, the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (NISCA) publishes individual event and relay qualifying times for both “automatic” and “consideration” designations. The “automatic” standard is the 80th place time averaged over the past three years. The “consideration” standard is the top 150th place time averaged over the past three years. When a swimmer achieves the automatic qualifying time in a regularly scheduled interscholastic meet (up to and including State Meet performances), he is an “Automatic All-American.” At the end of the qualifying year, only the top 100 swimmers from the combined automatic and consideration lists are designated as “All-American." Those achieving the consideration time but not finishing in the top 100 receive the designation “AllAmerican Consideration." A swimmer may be listed in as many events as his times qualify. Relay teams are limited to four swimmers only and only one relay team per event per school may qualify. Times achieved at high altitudes are adjusted downward by NISCA to ensure equitable comparison with those times achieved at sea level.

Power Point Rankings Each year, the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) sponsors a National Virtual Dual Meet. High school teams enter their best dual meet line-up using official times earned over their respective seasons. Each time is given a point value based on the official NISCA Power Point tables. The tables are designed to equate quality of a swimming time or a diving total from even to even. The points are then tallied and teams are awarded a national ranking. The results are released each summer.

Acknowledgments This wasn’t the season we hoped for, but, in this time we have been given the opportunity to reflect on our past seasons with Regis Jesuit. That reflection has made us all the more grateful for the time we have spent swimming with our brothers. We, the Class of 2020 would like to acknowledge the generosity and dedication of our families, friends and others who have supported us both in and out of the water over the past four years. With much gratitude, we would like to acknowledge the following people: The captains‘ parents, Tom and Amy Kurtz, David and Lisa Kerscher, Pat and Sarah Tierney, Jeanne Burks and Andy and Nancy Carr for coordinating the freshman-senior social, the fall outing, the cocktail parties, ordering and collecting money for the team equipment and spirit wear and communications. A lot of the following acknowledments were for tasks that did not happen due to the quarantine but we are still so grateful for Suzanne Toohill and Carleen Himel: Coordinating breakfasts. The Smith Family: Hosting Saturday morning breakfasts. The Kerscher Family: Hosting the Senior/Freshman Night. Jeanne Burks: Hosting the team bonding night and after-state party. Joelle Mackey and Maddie Proctor: Managing this big bunch of brothers. Courtney Oakes and the Aurora Sentinel: For your years of outstanding coverage of our team. Ray Chen, Array of Lights Photography: For all the amazing photos you take at our meets and allowing us to use them for our program. Stephanie Clouatre: Taking photos and putting together the team buttons. Lisa Goodwin: Social media posts and all team printed material. Kathleen Tanner and Kenzie Weed ‘10: Running the computer and timing console for the meets. Petra Frazier: Coordinating the Noodles & Co meet-day lunches. Gwyn Inglis, Tia Callahan, Jil Underwood and Caroline Wilten: Organizing senior appreciation night and the end-of-the-year banquet. Hosts for end of the season pasta parties: B League: The Yakely Family, A League: The Aguirre Family and State: The Carr Family. For anyone else who helps contribute to our seasons but was not recognized — thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Mike Doherty: For creating this tradition of excellence and continuing to follow and support us. Judy Weaver: For being our number one fan and continuing to tolerate our frequent visits to D‘s office. Thank you for the years of love and support. We will miss you. Coaches Billy Willson, Chris O‘Sullivan ‘93, Erik Downs and Kristin Repaci: We missed your continued support and positive attitude day-in and day-out. Taylor Roberts: We were so happy to have you back on the team and hope you will be back for all the future RJ divers. And finally, to Coach Nick – thank you for your commitment and dedication in making our team the best that it can be. We would not be the same without you. AMDG Go Raiders! A note to Nick from the senior moms -
Thank you so much for all of your hard work and dedication to this team. You have inspired hundreds of teenaged men to get out of bed at four in the morning and train when the rest of the world is sleeping. Your dedication and true care for your athletes has made the environment on the Regis Jesuit Boys Swim and Dive team what it is, and it is what makes it so hard for our seniors to leave. Thank you for everything.

Regis Jesuit boys Swim & Dive Team
Hello RJ Swim & Dive families! A few years ago, I reflected on our 2018 State Championship win and recounted that season as “Moments for the Hall of Fame.” I write this today, reflecting on our season that almost was, as one for the history books. I never could have imagined losing seven weeks with my students or an entire swim season. Sure, I’ve been teaching online for the past seven weeks, but it is no replacement for being with you all each and every day. We’ve all felt a rollercoaster of emotions during this time. As each new decision was announced by CHSAA, or Regis Jesuit, a small piece of our hope was diminished. It seemed at times that our flame may have come close to being extinguished. Do you know how to keep a fire going? In order to keep a fire going, and a flame burning, you must add fuel. Think about if you were camping. You’d be tasked with collecting dry leaves or twigs to reignite a fire, and you have to carefully watch and protect that fire. Each time it seems as if the fire is close to going out, you must gather supplies again. When I begin to reflect on our would-have-been season, I think a fire is the perfect analogy. We started the season as a roaring fire. Ready to go, full of energy, and so much potential. Then came the announcement that CHSAA was suspending spring sports and we weren’t returning to school. This was rain on our fire, but we huddled together as team and protected the fire. Everyone was committed to staying active – working out in and outside of the pool. Later, we heard that we wouldn’t be returning to school this year and that our season was officially cancelled. Well, I would say that was a downpour of rain on our fire. This could have been the time when we let the fire extinguish. We did not. This team is committed to keeping the fire going strong. We slowly brought the fire back to life. Coach Nick spoke to us on virtual class meetings and reminded us that this is still our season. Commitments were made to reach out to our teammates and offer support during this unprecedented time. Upperclassman are sharing their RJ Swim & Dive memories. We are celebrating our seniors and those who have committed to swim in college. So, where are we now? I believe the answer is that we are standing outside the fire, but the fire is once again roaring. We are standing outside the fire, ready to protect and rebuild that fire as necessary. One thing I’ve learned over the past three years of coaching RJ Boys Swim & Dive is that this team is an incredible group of young men who are truly with and for others. Freshmen, we wish you could have experienced a full season of RJ Swim & Dive. There is no other experience like it – I’m at a loss for words to describe it. I hope you were able to get a glimpse of what this team is about at Instrasquad. We are ready to have a full season with you! Seniors, we celebrate you. We thank you for the past four years of memories and leadership that you’ve brought to this team. None of us wanted to end our season this way. We wanted to be at the top of that podium again. We can’t wait to see what you all accomplish in the future and make sure you come back and visit! As a final note, keep in touch with your teammates. Keep the fire going strong. We will be a force to reckon with when we return. All my best, Coach Repaci

Goodbye to The Bubble After 20 years of exciting meets, brutal team practices, aquatic sports classes and silly freshman cannonball contests, the bubble has been retired. The replacement structure will be able to deliver a high quality and sustainable solution for the pool cover. Air quality should improve dramatically. The pool is expected to reopen for use by fall of 2020. 64
