MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

DEAR FRIENDS, It is inside this edition of The Raider you will find several stories describing the impact of Regis Jesuit.

On one hand, giving a complete description of the impact is an impossible task. But even across the generations, consistent themes emerge: academic rigor and challenge, the enriching experiences of athletic competition and extracurricular activities, the transformational impact of service experiences, and most importantly, the values-formative experiences of our Ignatian tradition. As an alumnus, I certainly have my own experiences to reflect upon. Without a doubt, I found myself prepared for college as I entered. But as I look back now, I'm sure it was the formative environment—ranging from the more common experiences, like being a member of the Regis Jesuit cheering section, to the more transformative, like my senior Service Project—that made lasting differences. And later (maybe I'm a late bloomer), I recognized my Ignatian formation as one of the greatest

gifts I have ever been given. Admittedly, some are “faster” on the take than others. I am reminded of an interview Missy Franklin '13, gave while she was still in high school:

formative experiences that are helping our students develop an authentic relationship with God as they discern and pursue who they are called to be.

“As I walked in the [Regis Jesuit] main door, I felt at peace and knew I belonged there. From that first moment, I knew God was with me.” 1

As much as we hope to inspire our students, so often it is the case that they inspire us. Welcome to the winter edition of The Raider.

And who didn't admire how gracefully she coped with her disappointment after the Rio Olympics?

Blessings,

“Right now, it's my faith in God that's really getting me through. In my mind, with Jesus, pain has a purpose. I know He's going to make something beautiful out of this. He's going to transform me and my life into doing something from all of this.” 2 These, perhaps, describe the ultimate impact.

David Card '87 President

Renewing Our New Mission, Values and Vision REVISING THE LANGUAGE THAT DRIVES OUR WORK BY JIM BRODERICK KING '87, IGNATIAN IDENTITY COORDINATOR

AMDG – for the greater glory of God. Men and

Women with and for Others. Cura personalis. The Grad at Grad. Competence, conscience and compassion. The Magis! There is no shortage of buzzwords, slogans or Latin phrases in Jesuit education. While the faculty and administrators, dedicated Trustees, program directors, nostalgic alumni, admissions officers, students and parents can bat these terms around like our own private language, those little shibboleths don't always hold meaning for outsiders. Moreover, they usually fall well short of a clear statement of purpose that can guide our actions, decisions and aspirations. Regis Jesuit High School knew this decades ago. At a time when it was in vogue for many organizations, companies and educational institutions to craft 'mission statements,' Regis Jesuit also felt the need to craft a concise statement of 'what we do and how we do it' back in the 1990s. Veteran teacher Bob McPhee, the late teacher Pam Thomas and former librarian Sandy Carson were part of an original committee charged by then Principal Rick Sullivan and President Fr. Ralph Houlihan, SJ, to state the raison d'etre of Regis Jesuit for that time and place. That direct articulation served the institution very well since 1994. Still, 2016 is a different time and place for RJHS, especially considering the growth and development that has occurred – co-divisional education for boys and girls, expansion of the curriculum, more than a doubling in size, etc. As a renewed effort in strategic planning began in the last year, some began to ask if revising our mission statement would be timely and helpful in our reflections on the needs of our school, as it has grown and changed so much in 20+ years. Therefore, the Board of Trustees and the Strategic Planning Committee asked the Ignatian Identity Committee, under the leadership of Fr. Tom Rochford, SJ '64, to evaluate our mission statement and craft new language to represent the current reality on our campus. Fr. Rochford and long-time friend of the school Marion Curtis, a member of our Council of Regents, former Trustee and alumnus parent, began the process of experimenting with new language that reflected several RJ characteristics, most especially our co-divisional and single-gender environment. After the Ignatian Identity

Committee vetted the language, Fr. Rochford and I sought the input of a variety of constituents – alumni, parents, committees, staff, administrators, Trustees and students when we could – about the language. Very quickly, an organic structure developed – a three-part, interlocking structure of Mission-Values-Vision. It became clear in the process, with so many constituent voices involved and aspirational goals at hand, that a new structure might be preferable: a statement of Mission (a succinct expression of fundamental purpose that should stand the test of time), a statement of our Values (deliberately more specific elements that emphasize things most important to us in this time and place–ideas that may adapt some with the changing world and developments in education), and all of that sitting solidly in partnership with the very familiar statement of Vision (that long-established guide that all Jesuit high schools share in some form – the Profile of the Graduate at Graduation). With the presentation of this final structure and language to the Board of Trustees, who gave their enthusiastic support and formal approval, the new statement of mission, values and vision became a new guiding measure for the school's efforts. The new statement was warmly received by a wide variety of community members noting the very specific reference to our Catholic and Jesuit identity, the primacy of Jesus Christ and our Gospel focus, and the direct reference to the Roman Catholic and universally human desire for justice and mercy. Our distinct and earnest hope, as we have already promulgated the new statement on the website and in virtually every room on campus, is that the community will spend this year asking how this new language of mission, values and vision can infuse our work and programs and maybe cultivate some new conversation and prayer as we continue our good work in building God's Kingdom. We hope that many will find in this document some expressions that poignantly represent current life at Regis Jesuit, the vitality of a Church lead by Pope Francis, a growing partnership with our local Archdiocese, and a community poised to help young women and men navigate their own interaction with an increasingly more complex world.

Meet Our New Jesuit BY CHARISSE BRODERICK KING, DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

Fr. Eric Ramirez, SJ

T

he latest Jesuit to join our community came as somewhat of an unexpected surprise just days before classes began this school year. Fr. Eric Ramirez, SJ, a self-proclaimed “proud Texan” from the desert town of San Angelo in West Texas, ended up at Regis Jesuit as Plan B. His visa to travel to Madrid, Spain to study theology at the Jesuit university there was denied at the last minute, but he is thankful that he ended up here. Most recently, Fr. Ramirez had been working at Immaculate Conception, the Jesuit parish in Albuquerque, where Fr. Bob Sullivan, SJ is now missioned. He found that a “really rich experience,” but is enjoying being back in a school environment (he spent his Regency at Jesuit High School in Tampa). Fr. Ramirez is teaching junior theology and senior English in the Boys Division and acts as chaplain in the Girls Division. He is also helping with retreats, liturgies and the other sacramental needs of the school. He served as the presider at the Allschool Mass for the Feast of All Saints. Though at this time it is unclear how long his detour at Regis Jesuit will last, we are grateful to have Fr. Ramirez here sharing his spiritual gifts, love of books, singing voice and gentle approach for as long as the Holy Spirit wills it.

Regis Jesuit Students Travel to Poland for World Youth Day BY JACK HARPOLE '20 AND

WILL BARBERA ' 20, RJ MEDIA

World Youth Day is an international Catholic event held approximately every three years in a different country. Originally created by Pope John Paul II in 1985, World Youth Day is an event primarily centered around the unity and cultural diffusion of Catholic youth around the world. The Pope's appearance at World Youth Day draws millions of people from various cultures to go on their own pilgrimages. During the course of the events, flags and other tokens from different countries are exchanged. Claire D'Costa '17 and Mary Harpole '17 had the opportunity to experience this year's World Youth Day, which was held in Krakow, Poland. “The most amazing part about World Youth Day was meeting all the Catholic youth around the world,” said D'Costa, “We all shared the same faith, and we were able to bond over that.” Religion is prominent at this event, and Claire and Mary were extremely proud to represent their country, their religion and their school.

Both girls discovered the significance of this trip. “A pilgrimage is a journey while learning the meaning of Jesus' suffering,” Harpole says. “[It] definitely comes with its struggles. The hardest part was learning how to compromise with people and settling on little food and sleep while being far away from home.” Despite facing tough conditions, the mood of the week was fellowship, joy and happiness. “There was a lot of singing and dancing. There were new countries, people and languages to be seen and heard every day,” Mary said. Mary and Claire's mothers, Lisa Harpole and Margaret D'Costa, were lucky enough to attend the trip as chaperones for the group as well. Lisa Harpole relates,

“It was very special to me because it was great to share a challenging and faith-filled trip with my child and millions of other pilgrims from all across the globe. We learned how to get through tough situations with a good attitude.” Margaret D'Costa pointed out how being a chaperone helped her improve her skills as an adult, parent and leader. “For me it was a time [for] making big sacrifices,” she says. “These experiences helped me grow in my patience and become a better chaperone.” World Youth Day in Poland impacted the lives of everyone who attended. It will forever be remembered for the meaningful insights to the world of Catholicism that can be brought back to Regis Jesuit and incorporated into our religious lives at school. Editor's Note: Clare Weisiger '18 and former RJ teacher Mr. Michael Wegenka, SJ also attended World Youth Day this past summer. Day for Others Turns Five BY CHARISSE BRODERICK KING

WITH REPORTING BY MICHAEL CORIGLIANO '17 AND ELLIOT STEINBERG '18, RJ MEDIA

FORMER RJ PRESIDENT FR. PHIL STEELE, SJ '66

used to quip that once we had done something at Regis Jesuit three times, it automatically became a school tradition. Applying that same perspective to Day for Others, which celebrated its fifth annual incarnation this past September, the event is now a long-standing tradition, but one of which we all can be quite proud. Originally the brainchild of former girls Service Director Kristen Kraus, who had participated in something similar at Marquette University, Day for Others has grown to be the largest single-day service effort of the school, with more than 1000 participants in 2016. From the time she was hired, Kraus said she wanted to implement an event that would be rooted in values and allow the “entire community to come together for something mission-driven in caring for the vulnerable,” she recalls. In the spring of 2012, Kraus reached out to Nick Fagnant '02, her counterpart at the time in the Boys Division, Colin St. John '01, then Director of Alumni Relations, and Ignatian Identity Coordinator Jim Broderick King '87 to see if they would be willing to help her in planning the inaugural event. They all agreed and began working toward bringing the first Day for Others to fruition on a day slated to coincide the national Day of Service which commemorates 9-11. Along the way, the core team enlisted the help of Kraus' husband Jon, who was working in Advancement at the time, to help with registration and Charisse Broderick King, the Director of Communications, to help with marketing and communications, along with parents and students to help with site acquisition and promotion. Though the rest of the core team had modest

expectations for participation in that initial event, anticipating a couple hundred volunteers, Kraus' aspirations were higher. “The guys chided me because I told them I thought we could get 500 participants that first year,” Kraus remembers, continuing, “They had to eat crow when we actually exceeded 600.” With a successful first DFO under their belts, the team went to work on a second event, making adjustments to the planning process and structure of the day based on their experiences that initial time through. The second annual Day for Others in 2013 saw more than 700 people spending a September Saturday in service around the Denver Metro area. And in each subsequent year, participation in Day for Others has grown by about 100 people, having exceeded 1000 serving at more than 50 sites during the fifth annual event. “There's obviously a thirst for this kind of opportunity of serving together and living out our mission as a family within our school community,” Jim Broderick King notes. Jack Wilson '17 furthers, “It's important because it connects all of Regis together. It establishes us as a community instead of just simply a school.” In 2015 as prep for the fourth annual DFO was kicking off, the core team of faculty and staff, which had added Amanda Shepherd from the Communications Office to help with registration and Advancement's Bethany (Paul) Carmellini to help with underwriting, decided to formalize roles for others who wanted to be involved in the planning. A steering committee of volunteers primarily comprised of RJ parents was created to collaborate in the planning of the ever-growing event.

Andy and Beth Inhelder agreed to chair it that year and again in 2016. They were joined by Molly Cohen, Frank DeLuca, Jeanne Maloney, Sarah Neylon and Elizabeth Paynter, who helped with everything from site acquisition and registration to arranging food for the commissioning and lunch. The volunteer steering committee will continue to work with the two new Service Directors, Brendan Love '04 and Anthony Mattacchione, and other faculty and staff members including Shepherd, both Broderick Kings, Carmellini and Alumni Director, Paul Miller '04 to move Day for Others into the future. Though the 2016 number of sites and participants might be at a sweet spot for what can reasonably be accommodated in the Denver area, there is hope that the event might be expanded

more into our alumni community. “Now that it has been five years, and the students who participated in DFO while they were here are off at college, our hope is to connect with them and have them start organizing more satellite events that happen that same day,” says Charisse Broderick King. For the last few years, there have been a smattering of service events in other cities coordinated by alumni. Regardless of how the event matures going forward, Day for Others will remain rooted in living out Gospel values and building the Kingdom of God, especially among the most vulnerable in our society. Kraus reflects, “Day for Others is about inviting our entire community into being Men and Women with and for Others.

A Trip to the Library RENOVATIONS TO CREATE SPACES CONDUCIVE TO LEARNING IN THE 21ST CENTURY BY PATRICK BRITTI '17, RJ MEDIA

T

owards the back of the Stephen A. Finn Library in the Boys Division, Adan Perez '17 sits on one of the newly-added couches with three of his friends as they compare math notes. For Perez, the newly-renovated interior provides the perfect area to socialize and study during lunch and Academic Support times. This positive response represents the goals of library renovations that took place in both the Boys and Girls Divisions over this past summer. The culmination of three years of planning, the renovations were intended to bring much-needed updates to technology and layouts of the 12 (BD) and 26 (GD) year-old libraries. Previously, the rooms had featured broad studying and sitting space, with books crammed into the corners or tucked away upstairs from the students. The seating area had been furnished with computer desks with decade-old monitors and square tables that only had space for four. With the recent changes, both libraries saw large rearrangements and improvements to these areas. In the Girls Division, Library Assistant Diana Haney explains that moving the computers from the center of the library into their own, newly sectioned-off room has been extremely beneficial. “It provides more accessibility for the students and teachers,” Haney says, and mirrors the computer lab that has existed for several years in the Boys Division. In the Boys Division, Librarian Bruce Raymond notes the alterations to the bookshelves and their placement, explaining that moving them into their new configuration allows the books to not be “hidden in the dark.” Several new study rooms were also configured in the boys library with the space that had previously been used for the bookshelves. Despite voicing concern that it may be difficult to monitor how students use the new rooms, Raymond thinks these new rooms contribute to the variety of spaces available to the students and teachers for studying, reading and socializing.

In addition to the creation of new rooms, the libraries have updated their technology, adjusted staff work spaces and installed new furniture. In the Girls Division, new study tables have been placed in the upstairs section of the library, along with the addition of a 3D printer similar to that in the Boys Division. The staff desks in the BD have now been moved to the middle of the room, with a new circular console the librarians have dubbed the “Enterprise” in reference to the deck of the spaceship from Star Trek. Though begun as soon as school was out for the summer, the renovations took longer than anticipated. In the Boys Division, the library was not open to students until the third week of school and finishing touches were being made into September. The girls library also faced similar delays. “It was hard the first few weeks,” says Raymond, “because we were waiting for the work to be done and the fire department to OK the room for students.” Despite these setbacks, students like Perez appreciate the libraries' “modern aesthetic” and are being encouraged to participate in new programs. “We have many new opportunities for students and staff with the recent renovations,” says Raymond, “and are looking for more ideas that come from student input.” MORE ON THE WEB:

SHOW THE IMPACT OF REGIS JESUIT Legend has it that in the mid-1990s on a hot late summer day in early football season, the varsity team was applying decals to their freshly-reconditioned helmets in preparation for the season. Each player was issued a white sticker of the hanging RJ to apply to his helmet. One player was mistakenly issued an extra sticker, which he in turn applied to the rear window of his car. With that single innocuous move, one of the most recognizable visible traditions of Regis Jesuit High School was born. Though the hanging RJ logo has only been around for 20 or so years, it has become the most recognizable symbol of our school and its impact on our community. The sticker has been issued to every new Regis Jesuit student for more than a decade. You can spot it on cars, bikes, skis and even boats all over the Metro Denver area.

Want another sticker? We're happy to provide it! Just email communications@regisjesuit.com.

BOYS DIVISION LIBRARY

We invite you to help us show the full depth and breadth of the Regis Jesuit community by placing the enclosed sticker for your own vehicle of choice. Then look for the hanging RJ sticker around town, or even in other parts of the country and strike up a conversation, swap stories and share a laugh. We hope this will provide us all with a better grasp the impact this community has had and continues to have nearly 140 years after the founding of this school. Being a member of the Regis Jesuit community means you have become part of something more. To learn more about the story of the Hanging RJ (or to add to it), visit www.regisjesuit.com/RJSticker.

The Fall Classic moves to Colorado Golf Club BY KATIE HALEY, COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

In its 12th year, The Fall Classic golf tournament moved to a new venue, the scenic Colorado Golf Club, but the same fun and festivities on the course and clubhouse that marked this event for more than a decade came along for the ride. The 2016 Fall Classic teed off to a yet another successful year with net proceeds topping $166,225 in support of the Regis Jesuit High School Financial Aid Program. To date, The Fall Classic has raised more than $2.3 million in support of students in need, allowing them to enjoy the Raider experience. It was a beautiful day at the Colorado Golf Club as foursomes took to the course for a day dedicated to good fun and good doing for the 12th annual tournament. Golfers listened to a student speak to the crowd about the profound influence Regis Jesuit has had on her life, made possible only by financial aid. The 2016 tournament welcomed back Michael & Jane McDonald of McDonald Automotive Group as the presenting sponsor. Other top sponsors included the T. Kevin McNicholas Foundation and Citywide Banks.

As golfers finished their rounds, they were serenaded by the Regis Jesuit Advanced Jazz Combo and welcomed to the post-round event, Cocktails on the Course, which also provided an opportunity for non-golfers to participate in this special day. Attendees enjoyed an open bar and dinner while taking in the scenic views from the Colorado Golf Club clubhouse. After that it was paddles up for the live auction, and my, oh my, did our guests bid generously. A bevy of volunteers made the day a phenomenal success on all levels. Our thanks also to Jim Benemann, our everfabulous emcee and auctioneer, the outstanding staff at Colorado Golf Club and our amazing Regis Jesuit students and volunteers for a great event. Thanks to all the players and sponsors who made the ‘drive’ in support of financial aid. Stay tuned for exciting changes coming to

Rich and Dee O'Neill are not your typical Regis Jesuit parents. They have had the opportunity to experience both the Boys Division and the Girls Division in a unique way. Their older son and daughter, Christopher '08 and Emily '09, were part of Regis Jesuit as the Girls Division first began. Their younger son and daughter, David '16 and Annie '17, have enjoyed the Steele Center and the shared space that it provides for both Divisions. While the experiences of both sets of graduates differ, they all agree on one thing—they love their co-divisional alma mater and their single-gender education! The O'Neills have been involved at Regis Jesuit since fall of 2004 and have been giving of their time, talent and treasure ever since. It is our privilege to give back for all that we have received.” They encourage all current and past parents to get involved and keep Regis Jesuit going strong. The school extends its gratitude to Rich and Dee for their legacy of volunteering and giving so generously of themselves. They exemplify what it means to be Men and Women with and for Others.

ANNUAL REPORT

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Parents are the first and most important educators of our students, and our students are a remarkably talented group.

Eugene A. 'Tony' Naes, Jr. '80

"As another semester and 2016 come to a close, there is more to be thankful for at Regis Jesuit High School than ever before. First and foremost, I want to thank all of our parents for entrusting their children to the school and a Jesuit education."

The Board and the RJ faculty and administration do not take your trust for granted. We are committed to delivering a positive experience for you and your children. Within every great organization, there are committed people, Regis Jesuit is no exception. I am inspired by the many people at RJ who are busy developing our students, and know that our President David Card '87, the faculty and administration are not resting on their laurels. Instead they continually search for better ways to make an impact—to teach, coach, mentor and form Men and Women with and for Others. Our Principals, Alan Carruthers and Gretchen Kessler, challenge the faculty with training and professional development through the use of many tools, including the RJ Way Program designed specifically for RJ faculty. The RJ Way challenges our faculty through peer and mentor observation and feedback, leveraging the Jesuit Hallmark of being open to growth. Additionally, academic programs that incorporate science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) are being introduced to enhance the Raider experience. Teachers like

Jason Beyer and Emily Glenn '08, who recently briefed the Board on the STEAM initiatives at Regis Jesuit, are passionate about their work and good representatives of their faculty peers. Their knowledge of the subject matter is impressive and so is their natural understanding that STEAM is only another means to the end of delivering a quality Jesuit education for our students. They are focused on a STEAM educational approach that will better prepare our students for the evolving rigors of college testing and curriculum with complete allegiance to the existing mission and traditions of our great school. The long-term success of Regis Jesuit is also entrusted to those who have generously agreed to serve as members of the Board of Trustees. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those members whose terms ended this past June: Mr. Stacey Campbell, Mrs. Karen Miller, Mr. John Sheridan '76 (my predecessor in the role as Chair) and Mrs. Mary Sullivan. I would also like to welcome our new Trustees who began their three-year term this summer: Mr. James Campbell '84, Fr. Kevin Dyer, SJ, Mrs. Kim Dyer, Mr. Todd Gervasini and Mr. Kenneth Stable '05. The experience, wisdom and passion all the Trustees bring to bear in supporting this institution are truly extraordinary, and I am grateful to them.

Hopefully, many of you had the opportunity to attend the fall production of Beauty and the Beast, or a choral or instrumental performance or athletic event this school year. The positive impact of RJ directors, conductors and coaches is apparent and has resulted in memorable performances, as well as uncommon displays of sportsmanship, courage and poise among their charges. These are only a few of the many reasons to celebrate Regis Jesuit and to be proud of its work. If you have the opportunity to participate in school activities, please do so. Your experiences will be more meaningful than anything I can describe. There is nothing like being present for the daily Examen, welcoming your child back from an RJ retreat or delivering a meal to thankful Boys Hope Girls Hope students to make a deep impression. Have a blessed and happy New Year.

Best regards,

Eugene A. 'Tony' Naes, Jr. '80 Chair

Regis Jesuit takes seriously its responsibility to earn and maintain the trust of our donors. More than ninety percent of every dollar given to the school goes directly to our programs. RAIDER DEEP IMPACT

REGIS JESUIT'S INFLUENCE ACROSS THE GENERATIONS BY COLIN ST. JOHN '01

For many of us, looking back at high school becomes foggier with every passing year. Still, every Raider has specific touchstones that stand out in his or her memory, from the significant to, well, not so much. My era was marked by partially-baked Otis Spunkmeyer cookies at office hours, heat watch, snow days, Mullen rivalries, trips to KenTacoHut and a certain reggae Homecoming. And, today, I'm still in awe of the education I received—call it a special sort of Regis Jesuit arrogance, but college didn't seem too difficult after high school—and the friendships I formed. I still see my high school pals almost as much as when we were in school—a fact heartening to me, but often puzzling to those who didn't attend RJ. Each era has its own hallmarks, and each graduate his or her own perspective on what mattered most about the Regis Jesuit experience. And how it affects their lives today. The Raider reached out to alums from a wide swath of generations to see how RJ continues to resonate.

THE PINK PALACE YEARS Bill Uebelher '59 attended a very different Regis Jesuit than the one that rings the morning bell today. Yet, he still sees a tie that binds. “What was special for me in the middle and Above: Bill Uebelher '59

late 50s was the diversity in family backgrounds among Regis students at that time,” Uebelher says. “What I am proud of now is that this diversity includes women and men of several races and ethnic backgrounds.” When The Raider asked him what it was about the school that still affects him, all these years later, he says, “I think that the best thing from my four years at Regis Jesuit High School, which I continue to carry into my life, is a concern for others that was taught.” He goes on, “This was done not so much by words as through opportunities for service in activities and clubs. Now, Jesuit schools highlight this in their mottos, Women and Men for Others.”

Many alums came to Regis Jesuit at a turning point in their lives. One such fellow is John Sauer '69. In 1965, his freshman year, Sauer's father left their family. Then, in 1967, his older brother, Jimmy,

was killed in a car accident. “Not only was Jimmy my best friend, but he was the father figure for the Sauer kids. I was lost,” Sauer says. “I was angry at God for taking my brother out at such a young age. If not for 'replacement father figures' from good old Regis, I wouldn't have been able to have such a wonderful life.” Sauer names Fr. Stowe, Rudy Brada, Coach Giarratano, Tim Willard, Mr. Kinsella, and Guy Gibbs '47 as some of those who helped him through such a tough time. Of Gibbs, he says, “What a wonderful man: a living example of a Man for Others. It's as if he and the others knew I was in trouble. They showed me some extra attention. They cared.” Sauer sees the same kind of concern at the school today. “Regis Jesuit has always looked into each student to discover their 'niche,' what drives them most. What is it that they can build on in order to excel, and thus feel good about themselves? Striving for excellence: what a concept. Regis instills values, durability that stands the passing of time,” he says. “Rich, middle class or poor, black, brown or white: we were all Regis Raiders. We were able to be 100% ourselves. That's probably a good definition of happiness: an ability to be 100% yourself!” Two of John's sons, Bernie '97 and Tim '06, both teach at the school. Tom Robinson '64 had the same unique experience of Regis Jesuit as the Sauer sons: both attending and teaching at the school. “The best part of my time, though my high school experience was a great one, was the exposure to so many great Regis students, both in the classroom as a teacher and on the various fields and courts as a coach.” Always to the point, Mr. Robinson concludes, “My Regis experience gave me a formula for success in facets of life. It provided me with a livelihood and lifelong mentors and friends.”

PARKER ROAD LIFE A theme that cuts across decades of alumni is the value of service, one that David Spriggs '02 recognizes. “For my first year of community service, I worked with other students to help construct a house for a family that couldn't afford any housing. It was a really eye-opening experience. The experience humanized a social issue, right here in our own community. Through installing drywall, pouring concrete and putting down floorboard, I also learned that a day of hard labor really was a day of hard labor. These are not experiences that you normally get to share with your friends or have in a classroom.” Spriggs credits such moments with influencing his day-to-day life. “Regis provided me with a solid moral foundation and taught me the value of hard work, both of which have helped me achieve my goals and navigate tough decisions,” he says. “I didn't realize it until later in life, but the tough assignments and focused studying at Regis taught me to concentrate on and complete the tasks at hand. More importantly though, it also taught me to have high expectations for myself.” Regis Jesuit directly impacted the work of D.J. DiDonna '01, the co-founder of EFL (Entrepreneurial Finance Lab) Global. “Regis Jesuit's service mission—the concept of living for others— has had the most lasting impact on my life, specifically through my career,” DiDonna says. “After a liberal arts degree and brief tour through the start-up world after college graduation, I attended business school to try to find a pursuit that married three interests: entrepreneurship, international scope and social enterprise—or mission-driven business. During my second MBA year, I found a professor who

had done research on the role of access to finance and international development in Latin America and Africa, and together we co-founded a private, forprofit company that helps enable financial inclusion in emerging markets. This has allowed me to live and work across several dozen countries, and see, up close, the importance of a bigger-than-self worldview, which Regis instilled in me through Service Projects, retreats, and the nature of its community.” Of his era at the high school, DiDonna says he recalls “the support for launching a new humor newspaper, late nights doing alumni phone-a-thons with now-President David Card '87, a graduation trip to Moab, and of course, the time our good friend and classmate Greg Larson '01 successfully launched Regis's first (and last?) ballet club: what a killer performance, even with his broken hip from the Robotics Club malfunction.”

THE NEW GIRLS IN TOWN Madeline Crawford '07 says she and her friends “often talk about the “Regis Network.” She goes on to explain, “This, of course, began with my group of classmates and their families, as well as the coaches, teachers and staff who mentored me while I was a student. When I left Regis Jesuit, I sought out a Jesuit university, and this network morphed into a Jesuit network. For my first job out of college I was hired by a firm where the CEO had attended Jesuit high schools and colleges; an introduction that was made through my professor at Loyola Chicago. This network continues to support my professional and social endeavors. It has been a truly invaluable resource to mine and my family's life.” She looks back at a unique RJHS that isn't familiar to the generations of male alumni who preceded her. “Our era of the Girls Division was the most special because we were the first class to attend all four years,” she says. “We were the experimental group, I guess you could say, but we got to start everything from scratch. It was so exciting—and sometimes very weird. We were able to really embrace ourselves and be accepting of one another.”

And it's not just old-timers like myself who can see the value of a Regis Jesuit education. Take it from Kate Kassal '16, who just graduated this past May. “Regis Jesuit definitely prepared me for college academically through the rigorous courses and heavy workload, but more importantly, Regis prepared me to be the best person I can be in college and in life.” And if that didn't make you feel old, try this on for size: “RJ gave me a solid foundation in many core areas, which can only benefit me in college and beyond. Additionally, I am ecstatic about being an alumna and getting to connect with other RJ graduates,” she says. “I look forward to attending RJ Homecomings and other alumni events. Regis Jesuit has given me so much, and hopefully I will have the opportunity to give something back to a place I called home for four years.”

Where Are They Now? M r. B i l l J e l i n e k BY PAUL MILLER '04, DIRECTOR OF ALUMNI RELATIONS

1 What years did you teach at Regis Jesuit and what were the subjects you taught and positions held? I began teaching at Regis Jesuit (just Regis then) in 1972 and retired in 2011. I taught theology (called religion then) for eight years, also serving as chair of the theology department, and then moved into full-time counseling having completed my master's in counseling in 1980. At that time Regis was beginning to expand both its personal and college counseling programs. I was chair of the counseling department from 1980 to 2003. Besides teaching and counseling, I also coached football and baseball. I was first a freshman football coach and then assistant varsity coach for 17 years and a baseball coach for 13 years, serving as head baseball coach from 1975-85.

Can you reflect a little bit about your first few years at Regis Jesuit, after having been in the Society of Jesus for ten years, what was the transition like? My first years were like coming home so the transition was easy. I was very familiar with Jesuit education having attended both a Jesuit high school, a Jesuit university and the Jesuit seminary. I had made the transition to high school teaching having taught in two Jesuit schools already, Kapaun in Wichita and DeSmet in St. Louis, as well as at St. Francis in

Denver. I had Jesuit friends on the faculty already, and it was through the invitation of one that I applied to Regis in the first place.

You wore many different hats while at Regis Jesuit. Which was your favorite and why? I enjoyed all the hats in different ways. I certainly enjoyed teaching because I was able to educate young men about Christian life and belief and challenge them to recognize the importance and meaningfulness of the Catholic faith. As a counselor, I saw fewer students each day but got to know them in a much more personal way than is possible in the classroom. I loved the personal and more in-depth relationships. This was perhaps my favorite hat. I saw my coaching as really an extension of the other roles, as a way to positively influence the growth of young men. Although I may have been coaching football and baseball, who I was really coaching was young men.

What was it like to have your son attend Regis Jesuit? Having Justin attend Regis was special for me but perhaps a challenge for him. I was so glad he attended because I wanted him to have similar experiences that I had had growing up that really set the direction of my life. I wanted him to be influenced by the same great men and women that I worked with. I wanted him to

internalize the values such as men for others and magis for which Regis stood. The four years he was there was a special time for me and I hope for him as well.

What was your greatest accomplishment at Regis Jesuit? I don't know if I have any “greatest accomplishment. I hope I was a positive influence in the lives of the students I encountered. Most of the time we educators don't really know how we have influenced students until they may tell us long after the fact. Some highlights come to mind however: coaching in the state championship football game, co-authoring a PARENTS GUIDE TO DRUG AND ALCOHOL PREVENTION used by Regis and other high schools across the country as part of their prevention programs, serving for a year as president of the counselors association of all the Jesuit high school counselors. All of these really are team accomplishments, not just my own.

During your time as a teacher, I'm sure you handed out your fair share of JUGS, any one in particular that stands out? I am sure as a teacher I did hand out a number of JUGS, all very much deserved, of course, but none stand out.

That was a few years ago. As a counselor, I purposely did not jug kids because I did not want that to possibly interfere with any counseling relationship I might have with him. I could handle any difficulties in a different way.

Where do you live now and what are you up to? I still live in Wheat Ridge where we have lived for over 25 years. I believe it was six months after having moved into this house that Regis announced the gift of land in southeast Denver and not long after that announced that the school would be moving. My friends kidded me sarcastically about my great timing. So, instead of moving, I carpooled for 20 years with other teachers (Rosenbaugh, Card, Newton) the 25 miles there and back. That difficult drive turned into a great experience with all of us becoming even better friends. I see these friends and many others at a monthly breakfast of retired (and a few still teaching) Regis faculty. I stay very active with my family. All four of my children live in Denver and we have eight grandchildren. There is always something going on with them. I do some volunteer work at St. Dominic's parish in north Denver. And I stay physically active through golf, hiking, mountain biking and pickleball. I try to grow spiritually each day through prayer, scripture, and spiritual reading and reflection.

What do you miss most about Regis Jesuit? What I miss most are the people, students and faculty, their spirit, their goodness and values, their dedication, their friendship. Regis in a true sense is a family whether during the four years students are there or the 40 years or so that I have been friends with other faculty members, both lay and Jesuit. All of these wonderful people have been a huge blessing and inspiration for me for which I am so grateful. 2 1. Ultimate Raider Journey JORGE ESTEBAN-JARABO'S INTERNATIONAL TIES TO REGIS JESUIT BY CHARISSE BRODERICK KING WITH REPORTING BY KYLE MACDONALD '18, RJ MEDIA

H

e's grown up in the Aragon region of northeastern Spain. His parents are Spanish; his culture and heritage is Spanish; yet, he's a Colorado native. Meet Jorge Esteban-Jarabo, a young man who lives thousands of miles away from here, but started his life journey just down the street. Born in Littleton, Colorado, Jorge arrived while his parents, Dany Esteban and Maria Jarabo, were teaching Spanish at Regis Jesuit as a part of a teacher exchange program. Jorge joined their family toward the end of his parents' two-year teaching commitment, just shortly before they returned to their native country with their best souvenir. All these years later, Jorge has found his way back to where it all began for him, as he spends a year away from home and his family as an exchange student at RJ this school year. Though he says he is “a little homesick,” Jorge was up for the adventure of attending school in the United States. Having taught here and maintained connections with many faculty and staff since their time here (including Rick Sullivan and his family with whom Jorge is living this year), his parents were confident it would be a good

opportunity as well. “This school is 10 times better than my school in Spain,” Jorge reports, though he does comment that, “It's weird not having girls in our classes.” With a kind and outgoing disposition, he hasn't had any issues making friends. Classmate CJ Allen '19 notes, “He's made a big impact on Regis Jesuit. A lot of people know him, and a lot of people like him.” Jorge is taking full advantage of the opportunities offered him during this year, both within the classroom and outside it. He is playing on the sophomore basketball team. He also plans to audition for the spring play, as he is passionate about theatre. “I don't really know what I want to do with my life yet, but I do like performing arts. I like being on stage.” Jorge also plays saxophone and xylophone with the Advanced Jazz Ensemble, so knows what it's like to perform. Jorge will return to Spain at the end of the school year, but when asked if he would come back to America he simply says, “Yes.” He wants to return for college, perhaps to New York and perhaps to study theatre, though he knows that is a tough market to break into. However, with his drive and passion, we know that Jorge is up for that journey as well.
