PRESIDENT'S REPORT

THE IMPACT OF GIVING 2020-21

OUR MISSION

Regis Jesuit High School —a Catholic educational community— engages the gifts of young men and women in a single-gender environment, fosters faith in Jesus Christ and promotes justice and mercy, develops critical minds and nurtures compassionate hearts to serve others – all for the greater glory of God.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

STEWARDS OF A BRIGHT FUTURE

How refreshing it is to write to you today as we emerge confidently from a year that tested and proved the resilience and generosity of our school community. In a year in which everything had to be reimagined and re-engineered and in which many activities were sacrificed, I am most proud to report that we successfully held every one of our student retreats including all 10 of our Kairos retreats. We found grace by continuing to prioritize the Lord’s time and our relationships. And in May, in the heart of McNicholas Green, we proudly conferred diplomas upon the 383 members of the Class of 2021, celebrating their extraordinary achievement of academic accomplishment and personal perseverance.

As we look ahead to our bright future, we are grateful for our generous benefactors for helping ensure our success in providing a faith-centered, college-preparatory education combined with a wide variety of formative activities in athletics, the performing arts and other co-curricular areas. Especially as we welcome a growing number of families who could not attend our school without financial assistance, this education—deep in meaning and broad in scope—is ambitious and costly to provide. It is also essential for today’s tumultuous world. Therefore, we move boldly forward with our Inspire & Ignite 2025 Strategic Plan to ensure the relevance and permanence of our mission. Our focus is on four actionable Bold Moves over the next five years:

report, you can learn more about the three major funding initiatives that will help bring our vision to life. Inspired by the successful achievement of those bold visions that have led us to this moment, we look forward to providing our students with new opportunities to discover and develop their gifts and talents in service of humanity and the natural world, for the greater glory of God. Thank you to our generous mission partners for your support over the past year. Your investment helps us steward the bright future our students deserve. I hope you will continue to participate in our remarkable journey. Sincerely,

» Remove real and perceived barriers to entry and retention

» Become the leader in single-gender education

» Innovate to drive formation deeper » Transform athletics into a conduit for mission and leadership These important priorities will require significant resources. On pages 25-28 of this

2020-21 Highlights

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF PHILANTHROPISTS Our students are asked throughout the year to reflect on the blessings they have and come together to support a common cause. Last year, they stepped up to the plate in a big way and raised over $85,000 for non-profit partners in our community. Here are some of the highlights:

On October 16, 2020, 125 students, faculty, staff and parents walked or ran five kilometers around campus as part of socially distanced teams to raise funds to support students in Guatemala through International Samaritan. Through the sponsorship of more than 300 donors, RJ teams raised more than $23,500, enough to provide 79 tablets to International Samaritan scholars.

More than 200 Regis Jesuit students and faculty took part in the Polar Plunge on April 17, 2021, in the frigid Aurora Reservoir, raising a total of $26,888 for Special Olympics Colorado. Following a huge turnout and show of support by the Raiders, Regis Jesuit was awarded both the Highest Fundraising Team and named “Coolest School” by Special Olympics Colorado.

In the final week of April, Regis Jesuit students, faculty and staff participated in the school's first-ever Wish Week, helping to bring the wish of Johny, a three-year-old from the Denvermetro area battling leukemia, to fruition through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. With aspirations of raising $10,000, the week-long event kicked off with a superhero-themed opening ceremony where students gathered in Lou Kellogg Stadium to meet Johny and his family and pledge our commitment to come together to support his wish. As the week drew to a close, the effort had garnered nearly $20,000 in support.

During the 2020-21 school year, the Servant Leadership class organized Mission SZN, our annual opportunity for the community to come together, have a bit of fun, and raise money for different non-profit organizations chosen by RJ students. The school community united by dressing down in different themes and participating in a variety of events to raise spirits and support. By holding the first ever 2RW Amazing Race and selling Mission SZN sweats and lanyards, chances for experiences with faculty and staff and dress down days, Mission SZN was able to raise $15,000. Proceeds were donated to student-chosen non-profit partners including the Kino Border Initiative, Marisol Homes and First Nations.

We are grateful for the 1997 donors who, during the 2020-21 school year, gave more than $3.8 million to enrich the lives of our students, enhance our programs and campus and advance the school's strategic plan.

BILL HOOVER ’47: A MAN WITH AND FOR OTHERS William Francis Hoover (Bill) graduated from Regis Jesuit High School in 1947. He credited the Jesuits at Regis Jesuit High School with his inspiration to work diligently and use his talents to lead others. In 1950, Bill joined the United States Air Force and rose to rank of major in 1965. He served with honor and distinction in the Korean, Vietnam and Cold War operations and was awarded numerous commendations including one of the highest awards in the Air Force for bravery—the Distinguished Flying Cross. Bill was a family man devoted to his wife, Sue, and their five children. He made a career change to provide more time to raise his family and worked for the Federal Aviation Administration for 20 years. After retiring, Bill traveled the world with Sue and enjoyed their 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was an active member of Queen of Peace Catholic Parish and served as a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus as a fourth-degree knight. Bill passed away in May 2021 at home with the care of his adoring family. Bill supported his alma mater annually and bequeathed his IRA to Regis Jesuit for the Class of 1947 Endowed Scholarship that will provide scholarship monies for students with financial need. We are grateful to Bill for his service and dedication as a Man with and for Others, continuing to lead with this legacy gift and loving example.

Giving Impact: Holistic Education

MAKING MENTAL HEALTH A STUDENT PRIORITY Katherine Leaffer ’22 was finishing her sophomore year at Regis Jesuit when COVID changed the world for all students, but especially those who face mental health challenges. “Mental health is a problem and I hate that it’s so stigmatized,” said Leaffer, who helps raise money for mental health projects at Regis Jesuit and elsewhere. “The pandemic made things worse across the country. It really tore my heart apart, because, even before, a lot of kids didn’t feel like they could share their problems.” Now in her senior year, Leaffer is helping create an environment at Regis Jesuit where more girls and boys are willing to speak up and seek support when they need it. She is working closely with Dana Bauer, Assistant Principal of Student Support, to bring more student voices into the conversation about mental health issues. The timing was perfect, because, beginning with the 2020-21 school year, Bauer stepped into a new administrative role that integrates all health and counseling services across campus to provide a more holistic approach. Bauer had been a school counselor at Regis Jesuit for many years. Together, Bauer and Leaffer have organized a student advisory committee, and created an open forum for students to share their stories with the administration. At the first meeting, students spoke openly about what services they need, what the school is doing well and what blind spots exist. After reviewing a list of the many services and programs the school could add, Leaffer’s family—and Katherine

22

REGIS JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL

herself—provided seed funding to ensure that Regis Jesuit’s one part-time school therapist could expand her hours to full-time. Next, the family initiated a challenge grant for the 2021-22 school year to help ensure that a second full-time therapist could be hired. Additional fundraising efforts will make more financial and community support available for students and integrate more student-led programming into the school day. Individual counseling and therapy options will continue, even as more resources are added that help strengthen our students’ wellbeing and resilience. “Everyone’s heart is in this,” said Bauer, who now has a long list of initiatives that will help the Raider community. “Gaining support shouldn’t be a hard sell. But we can’t afford to wait. Thanks to Katherine, we’ve got a lot of students who are as passionate as she is.”

Thanks to a generous challenge grant from the Jacqueline Marie Leaffer Foundation, the first $25,000 in gifts directed to the Holistic Education priority for Mental Health and Wellness on or before December 31, 2021 will be matched dollar for dollar! Help ensure lasting infrastructure, programs and tools that will help our students thrive »

Inspire & Ignite 2025

IN THE TRUE SPIRIT OF A CATHOLIC, JESUIT EDUCATION, WE ANSWER THE CALL TO DISCOVER, REDEFINE AND REACH FOR THE MAGIS—THE BETTER AND DEEPER EXPRESSION OF EXCELLENCE FOR THE GREATER GLORY OF GOD. As part of our Inspire & Ignite 2025 Strategic Plan, we have identified three major funding initiatives. These important projects will require significant resources and the commitment of our generous mission partners.

• ACCESS & AFFORDABILITY • SCIENCE & INNOVATION CENTER • ATHLETIC ENHANCEMENTS

Sarah and Patrick Tierney put academics before all else when choosing a school for their boys. Financially, Regis Jesuit was an ambitious choice, but thanks to the school’s commitment to access and affordability, Ryan ’20 and Matthew ’22 were able to dive right in—as swimmers and leaders dedicated to serving others. Patrick says, “Regis developed our sons morally, mentally and physically. As their understanding of their academic subjects matured, so did their understanding of God.” Sarah agrees. She also says she is “profoundly grateful” for the generous financial aid that made it possible for [her] family to experience the community and education that uniquely defines the school. “Thanks to the benevolence of the Regis community, our sons have benefited from an outstanding education and have developed lifelong friendships.” Today, Matthew prepares to graduate from Regis Jesuit's Class of 2022. Ryan is in his second year at Harvard University, where he swims with the varsity team and is part of the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (NROTC). Ryan and Matthew are pictured above in red blazers.

Inspire & Ignite 2025

Sofia Reyes ’21 was one of a growing number of female students who participate annually in Regis Jesuit’s Robotics Club. Her experience is helping inform plans for our future Science & Innovation Center. Reyes says she learned as much from her Robotics Club mentors as she did from her classes. “They encouraged me to try new things, learn from my mistakes, to speak up and to help other people learn along with me. I learned if something is hard, staying with it and trying new approaches is better than taking a break and then going back to doing the same thing over and over. “Having mentors, and the space to apply their learning to new fields—like agriculture or biomedical engineering—will encourage more students, especially girls, to explore STEM careers. I’ll be happy to come back and help however I can.” Reyes, pictured very left above, is a freshman at Regis University where she is majoring in computer science and engineering.

Rick Wolf, Head Boys Soccer Coach at Regis Jesuit, believes that having a higher purpose matters more than the team’s win-loss record or his players’ individual statistics. Athletic enhancements would help all RJ student-athletes grow as leaders. Wolf says he prepares his players for what he believes is most important in life. “Our goal is to use the sport of soccer as an opportunity to form our young men and women as players, teammates and most importantly, to grow in their relationship with God.” Many serve as retreat leaders and frequently take on other formal and informal leadership roles throughout the school. The team maintains a 3.6 grade point average and nearly all made the Academic All-State team. “They are easy accepts to any institution, whether or not they continue to play.” Wolf oversees the Freshman, Junior Varsity and Varsity Boys teams encompassing more than 80 players from freshman through their senior years. He also teaches Theology.

2020-21 PRESIDENT'S REPORT

GIVING IMPACT: Endowed Schol arships

CALLING ALL ALUMS TO PAY IT FORWARD By Sam Saracino '69

As I look back on my lengthy legal career, the four years I spent at Regis were probably the most important and formative aspect of my education. Yet I was prepared to attend Mullen until I received a half-tuition scholarship ($150 of the $300 tuition), without which I simply would not have been able to attend Regis. Some 30 years later, in the summer of 2000, I read an article in the Regis Jesuit newsletter by Guy Gibbs ’47 asking alumni to “remind yourself of the difference it made to you to attend Regis.” It was clear to me that my Regis education was unsurpassed in preparing me for college, for law school, for a successful career as a tax and corporate lawyer and for life. That year, my wife (Victoria Ries) and I decided it was important to repay the generosity afforded me and to make it possible for Regis to offer others the opportunity and education I had received decades earlier. Accordingly, we started with a pledge to contribute enough to fund two four-year scholarships that would cover half of the cost of attending Regis. We have been annual contributors ever since. In 2011, we responded to (then RJ President) Fr. Phil Steele’s, SJ ‘66 request for an early pledge and contribution to the FOUNDATIONS FOR EXCELLENCE Campaign that focused on raising funds for salaries, tuition assistance and the Performing Arts Center & Student Commons (now known as the Steele Center). Earlier this year, I came across the details of the RJ Momentum Match Scholarship Program through which the RJ Board of Trustees would generously match gifts on a 1:1 basis for named endowed scholarships. Given my long-standing interest in ensuring a Regis Jesuit education for those who otherwise would not be able to afford the tuition, my wife and I created the Saracino Family Endowed Scholarship for

students who have demonstrated high to moderate needs and have scored well on the placement test. We have a son and a daughter (both of whom attended Seattle Preparatory School, the co-ed Jesuit high school in Seattle), and it was important for us to make sure that our endowed scholarship would be available to fund a Regis Jesuit education for students in both the Girls Division and the Boys Division—either on an alternating basis or, if sufficient funds are available each year, simultaneously. If a recipient remains in good standing, our hope is that the Saracino Family Endowed Scholarship will help fund that student’s Regis Jesuit education for four years. Economic and social diversity are more important than ever, and it is critical that Regis Jesuit have the endowment funds necessary to make that education affordable to all. I am proof that a Regis education can have a profound impact on a student’s life, and I am exceedingly grateful for that education and for the generosity of others that made that education possible. In closing, I can only echo Guy Gibbs: Remind yourself of the difference it made in your life to attend Regis. Please think about how you can make a difference in the life of a current or future RJ student with contributions during your life and with a charitable bequest in your will.

RJ Momentum Match Program for Endowed Scholarships Inspires Donors A priority of Inspire & Ignite 2025 is to increase Regis Jesuit’s endowment to $35 million. To help inspire gifts, the Board of Trustees made $1 million available beginning January 1, 2020, with a 1:1 matching program for gifts to named endowed scholarships. By the fall of 2021, the momentum match dollars were fully utilized. Thank you to our generous mission partners for their enthusiasm!

GIVING IMPACT: Endowed Schol arships

“We as a family truly believe that one small opportunity can change someone’s life forever. Our hope is that this scholarship will be the catalyst to do just that in a young person’s life. For Christopher '09 and Ryan '11, Regis provided a nurturing, challenging and unmatched education. Being able to offer that same experience to a student that otherwise may not have the means to attend and allow them to grow as Men and Women with and for Others is our hope for the scholarship.” – Daniel & Ann Marie Milinazzo, Milinazzo Family Opportunity Scholarship

“We created the Agape Endowed Scholarship to support Regis Jesuit’s commitment to providing an inclusive, diverse academic community that is accessible to everyone. We have been impressed with how Regis Jesuit has listened and responded to its diverse constituency during our time at the school, which we believe reflects the spirit of Agape.” – Jim & Stacy Rechtin, Agape Scholarship

Volunteer Appreciation

Tim and Mary Beth Baer Receive 2020 St. John Francis Regis Award for Outstanding Service Tim and Mary Beth Baer began their journey at Regis Jesuit with their son, Michael ’17 in the fall of 2013. Both of them jumped in to help with athletic team parent leadership right away. Michael played hockey and baseball, and the Baers led the way as parent coordinators helping with communication, serving meals and organizing concession duties. Mary Beth streamlined the Raider Parent Association sponsored concessions for the athletic events, transforming it into a self-sustaining program. Mary Beth also co-chaired 2020’s LARK Dinner-Auction, Regis Jesuit’s largest annual community event fundraiser. She helped pivot the event to a virtual experience that raised over $600,000 in support of the Guardian Angel Appeal. In addition to her role as event co-chair, Mary Beth has worked registration at LARK for all of the in-person iterations of the event since her family joined the RJ community. Her commitment never wavered. When their son, Matthew ’21 began his high school journey in 2017, Mary Beth and Tim doubled-down on their commitments to volunteering especially around football, hockey and baseball —helping with media guides, coordinating team Gift Gathering events for LARK, organizing spirit apparel for the teams and planning senior nights celebrating soon-to-be RJ graduates. We thank and honor Tim and Mary Beth as worthy recipients of this special award.

2021-22 PARENT LEADERSHIP GROUP The entire Regis Jesuit community benefits from the leadership and volunteer opportunities provided by our Raider Parent Association (RPA). We thank them for their generous service and commitment to the school. RAIDER PARENT ASSOCIATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS Stephanie M. Clouatre, President Cheryl M. Hall Victoria A. Jump Christina Morley Marla Newman Nicolle Rose Aimee Roumph Mary E. Schroeder

The St. John Francis Regis Award for Outstanding Service is bestowed annually at the President’s Reception in commemoration of the namesake of Regis Jesuit High School. Jean François Regis, a Jesuit priest who lived in the early 1600s, ministered to villagers in the mountains of southern France. Wellknown for the accessibility of his heartfelt sermons, he focused his ministry around those at the margins—the homeless, unemployed and hungry—and was particularly devoted to ensuring the health and safety of young women. This award is given to those in our community, who, like Regis, seek the greater good for all and have provided exemplary service and support the mission and life of Regis Jesuit High School.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

BOLDLY FORWARD of which strengthened their self-confidence, compassion for others and deep sense of purpose.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am proud of our mission that is stronger than ever and our school's continued service to metropolitan Denver. Regis Jesuit remains committed to its timeless purpose of providing a faith-based education to young men and women, while remaining attentive in responding to the signs of the times and the call of the Society of Jesus. As parents to two alums, John ’14 and Michael ’18, my wife Angela and I have experienced first-hand the life-changing opportunities that were provided to our sons during their time at Regis Jesuit—faith formation, college-prep academics, life-long friends, sports and clubs, and transformational service experiences—all

48

REGIS JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL

Thank you to the generous benefactors listed in this report who help to ensure our mission permanence. I am especially grateful for the exceptional faculty and staff who dedicate their lives to accompanying our young people through their formative high school years. I would also like to welcome new board members Michelle Campbell and Diana Rael and to thank our dedicated and long-standing members Larry Finch ‘74, Bill Leer and Conor McCallin ’98 who completed their terms with us this past summer. As Board Chair, I am not only proud of where we have been but excited for where we are headed as we double down on our commitment to our mission. Inspire & Ignite 2025: A Vision for Access, Innovation and Excellence will focus on three funding initiatives—all firmly rooted in our Catholic, Jesuit identity:

» Growing our endowment to its next milestone goal of $35M to sustain our robust financial aid program, ensuring accessibility to any qualified student who desires a Regis Jesuit education.

» Building a Science & Innovation Center that will provide innovative learning spaces and curriculum not only to keep us competitive in the marketplace, but most importantly to allow our students applied learning opportunities in service of God, humanity and the natural world.

» Enhancing athletic facilities to support the profoundly formational experience of our student-athletes. At Regis Jesuit, we continue to choose hope as our momentum forward, and we are grateful for your continued partnership as we work together to realize this bold, compelling vision for the Regis Jesuit community. In gratitude,

John M. Schmidt Chair, Board of Trustees
