2021 BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE
COACHING STAFF Head Coach - Ken Shaw Coach Shaw begins his 46th season as a head coach and his 14th year at Regis Jesuit. He guided the Raiders to back-to-back-to-back 5A State hoops championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The Raiders have won the Continental League title eight out of the last 13 seasons with a record of 113 -19 (85.6%). He also won single state championships with Yuma and Sterling. Coach Shaw is a former star Colorado prep player at Merino where he was the leading scorer in state history at the time of his graduation. He has amassed over 770 wins becoming just the third coach in state history to achieve this milestone. Before coaching at Regis Jesuit, Coach Shaw coached at Smoky Hill, in addition to Rocky Mountain, Yuma and Sterling. Coach Shaw has been married to Susan for 33 years and has two children: son, Kelly and daughter Setera. I coach because….. because I love the game and enjoy working with kids that want to become better players and better people. Favorite memory from coaching: Meeting with Joel Tribelhorn after the trip home after losing in the District finals to go to State in 1983 and sharing a hug with Joey Ptasinski immediately after winning the State Championship in 2009.
My coaching philosophy: I try to put my heart and soul in the game and always try to do it the right way. Favorite motivational quote: “Your Attitude and Hard Work are your only guarantees.” Inspirational coaching figure: Coach Pat Riley Favorite pre-game ritual: Remind myself that I’m very thankful for the opportunity to coach and still be involved in the game of basketball.
Coach Steve Solita
Coach Craig Leikam
Coach Solita has been at Regis Jesuit since 2007. Coach Solita is a native of Colorado and earned a degree from the University of Colorado and an MBA from Regis University. Steve is married to JoEllen and has three children: Brad, Taylor and Chelsea.
Coach Craig is married to Allison, a teacher and they have three children.

REGIS JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL RAIDERS Coach Dave Willsea
Coach Brad Dorais
Coach Willsea is a native of Colorado and played basketball at Gateway High School, where he was a foursport athlete. After graduating from the University of Wyoming, he returned home to teach and coach basketball. He has been coaching high school basketball in Colorado for over 20 years. Coach Willsea and his wife, Tanya, have three kids; Tavian is 17, Isabelle is 14, and Domini is turning 13. Coach Willsea feels blessed to be at RJHS.
Coach Dorais has been teaching and coaching for 28 years. This is his second year coaching at Regis Jesuit. He was varisty head coach for 13 years at Pagosa Springs, Mesa Ridge and Cherokee Trail when it opened in 2003-04. He has also coached boys and girls tennis. Coach Dorais currently teaches math at Cherokee Trail, including IB. He is married to Kati, who has taught at Regis Jesuit for 19 years and they have three children: Morgan - 18, Joe - 16, Haley - 14, and Jackson - 8.
Coaching for: JV I coach because… I enjoy building relationships with our players. I want to encourage and guide them to be better players, but more importantly, better men. I find it rewarding, and hope to give each player a memorable and terrific experience. Favorite memory from coaching at RJ: I have so many great memories of coaching at RJ. To limit it to one single experience is nearly impossible. I think winning the third State Championship stands out. Not many people outside of RJ gave that team a chance, and it was wonderful seeing all of our players share in that special moment, especially several of the guys who started their high school basketball, playing at my level. My coaching philosophy Hard Work, Discipline, Integrity, and Class are my cornerstones. By teaching these qualities, I can better ensure the positive impact my players will have on the world around them. Favorite motivational quote: “Winners are not people who never fail. Winners are people who never quit.” Inspirational figure: My parents Favorite tv show: Mountain Men Favorite music / band: Imagine Dragons Favorite professional team: New York Knicks Favorite professional player: Danny Manning Favorite food: Fried Chicken Favorite dessert: Chocolate Chip Cookies What is your pre-game ritual: I like to calmly sit and just get lost in my thoughts.
Coaching for: Freshman red I coach because ... I love watching the players grow, develop, and come together for something bigger than themselves. There are so many life lessons that basketball teaches that I am glad to be a part of it, and hopefully build life-long relationships with my players. Coaching philosophy: Get players to achieve more than they thought possible by having positive attitudes and great effort (the 2 things that they have control of), putting the goals of the team above their individual goals, and doing it all with great enthusiasm. Favorite motivational quote: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Inspirational figure: John Wooden Favorite tv show: The Wire Favorite band or music: Led Zeppelin or Frank Sinatra Favorite professional team: Denver Nuggets - but prefer college basketball Favorite professional player: Mugsy Bogues Favorite food: Smothered Burritos Favorite dessert: Ice cream Pregame ritual: A little quiet time
Coach Taylor Kallsen ‘15 Coach Kallsen moved to Colorado in 2012 and attended Regis Jesuit his sophomore year through senior year. He played three seasons under Coach Shaw and was a four-year letterman. He attended Saint John’s University (MN) and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. He currently teaches kindergarten at Canyon Creek Elementary in Aurora. Coaching for: Freshman white I coach because ... Basketball taught me some of the most important lessons in life. How to win, how to lose, how to work, and how to be a good teammate. I hope to help other young men grow in these areas to be better prepared for their lives ahead both in and out of the gym.
Favorite motivational quote: “If you want something you never had, you must be willing to do something you have never done.” - attributed to Thomas Jefferson Favorite professional team: San Antonio Spurs Favorite professional player: Stephen Curry Favorite food: Spaghetti Favorite dessert: Chocolate cake

REGIS JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL RAIDERS
BIGGEST FANS Mike and Tom Lucci When you came to your first Regis Jesuit basketball game, you might not have noticed them. But they were there, in the upper corner behind our bench, like they have been since 1968. The story of how Mike and Tom Lucci came to be a treasured institution for their adopted high school is especially relevant this year since so many of us notice their absence. The brothers are not able to attend games in person this year but wanted to ensure our boys knew how much they meant to them. They gifted the team two guardian angels, along with an inspirational note that each player has with them. The angels attend every game, home and away. Mike and Tom grew up in North Denver, within walking Mike and Tom Lucci distance of the old Regis High School. When they were in grade school at St. Catherine’s, the family didn’t have a car, so their dad walked with them to watch Regis HS football games. They fell in love with Raider sports. They listened to RJ basketball games on the radio. They remember watching on TV as other high school State Championship basketball teams carried the “Gold Ball” trophy. The brothers attended Mt. Carmel High School from 1965-68, but it closed at the end of their junior year. Completing high school at Regis was financially out of reach for the family, so they spent their senior year at Holy Family. That year was difficult—their new classmates already had their own cliques, and Mike and Tom didn’t fit in. When Regis joined the Skyline League, playing with the public schools in 1968, the brothers fully adopted Regis as “their” high school. They set a dream of someday watching Regis win the “Gold Ball,” and hopefully to be able hold it themselves for just a few seconds. Through the 1970s and early 80s, Mike and Tom could be found in the stands of Raider football, basketball and baseball games. It was a big thrill for them to be there when Regis won the State Championship in baseball in 1988. When the school moved to A guardian angel is always with us and gives us unconditional support. A Catholic Aurora, they had to limit themselves to attending just the basketball Missionary Society sent me a few little “guardian angel” figures. They were to be BASKETBALL games because of the distance from their home. sent to someone special that we could not Foundation For Success Their dream of holding the “Gold Ball” remained alive through the decades. After 41 years Coach Shaw and a great group of kids and their parents made their dream a reality in 2009. After clinching a 67-63 victory in overtime against George Washington, team captains Bud Thomas ’10 and Joey Ptasinski ’10 brought the trophy over to them in the stands. “It was one of the greatest thrills of my life,” Mike recalls. The brothers since have witnessed their dream come true six times, with three State titles for the boys and three for the girls basketball teams.
Success is built on a foundation of desire and faith. First, one needs to set a goal. Then, one must desire to achieve it. That means one must really want it, not just like to achieve it. It means being committed and putting in the effort to achieve it. After that, one must believe in oneself and in their teammates (in a team setting). If desire or faith start to fade, so does the dream and goal. As humans, we all need support, a special someone who is always there and never judgmental. That person will hopefully provide inspiration to help us along the way. That will help us reach into ourselves and find that “little extra” when things get tough. That “little extra” is inside us all. If we reach deep into ourselves and pull it out, it can make the difference between a champion and a runner-up.
be with, but needs our support. Tom and I hope that these 2 little guardian angel figures will accomplish that for the RJ basketball team and coaches. We hope it will provide unconditional support and a little inspiration for you to reach for that “little extra” that will result in a state championship. We believe in you and believe that this team is the best in the state and can and will win the state championship. There are no guarantees in life, but without desire, faith, and that “little extra”, success can not be achieved. Best wishes for the season ahead. We are with you always. Your “guardian angels” Mike and Tom Lucci
Their dream lives on.
