President's Report
THE IMPACT OF GIVING 2018-19
Inspiring
TRADITION Every year, the entire RJ community participates in a tradition called the Running of the Raiders that welcomes the members of the freshman class as they run into Lou Kellogg stadium at the first home football game.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
A YEAR OF MAGIS FOR OUR MISSION Thank you for supporting the most productive year in Regis Jesuit history! The 416 diplomas we conferred last May represented a record number of young people who are now carrying their Ignatian formation forth into the world. With their faith development and critical thinking skills as foundational elements of their life-skills portfolios, we are excited and hopeful that these young people will indeed follow their compassionate hearts in service to God, humanity and the natural world. These kinds of outcomes, along with the community of support described in this report, have only encouraged us to imagine what a better version of Regis Jesuit could look like over the next five years. How might we do an even better job of preparing our young people to contribute their gifts and talents, in service to humanity, creation and the greater glory of God, given the signs of the times? I am certain that one way we can do this will be to ensure Regis Jesuit’s accessibility to families of diverse economic profiles. Our tuition is a commitment–no doubt about it. But Jesuit schools were never meant to be exclusive. Through endowment growth, better community engagement and even cost-cutting, we are committed to ensuring that a Regis Jesuit education is accessible to students and families who desire our way of student formation. In addition to improving access and affordability, we imagine re-defining academic excellence in the Jesuit tradition. We want to define more
boldly the space of single-gender education and innovate our academic program to include more applied learning opportunities. By helping our students make healthy choices and become more resilient and by ensuring they have high-quality support when they need it, we are convinced that through our unique school structure, we can promote the dignity of young women and men more deeply, helping our students to reach a healthier, more complete and authentic selfactualization. We are also committed to providing new, stateof-the-art science, design and fabrication spaces. In doing so, we believe that Regis Jesuit can close the gender gap in STEAM fields and help all of our students gain practice at developing solutions to problems confronting humanity and creation. Contributed support from people like you encourages us to consider the magis for our students–those opportunities that will provide richer, deeper and more meaningful experiences as we move forward. Thank you for making 2018-19 such a successful and rewarding year. Your support has helped us add value to our students experiences this year and has enabled us to envision greater opportunities for tomorrow. We can’t wait to make them a reality. Sincerely,
David Card '87 President

Donor Recognition
ST. JOHN FRANCIS REGIS LEGACY SOCIETY Honoring donors who have made the ultimate gift by recognizing Regis Jesuit in their wills or estate plans. Those listed here have indicated in writing that they have made provisions for Regis Jesuit in their estate plans. During the 2018-19 fiscal year, 18 individuals joined the St. John Francis Regis Legacy Society by designating Regis Jesuit High School as a beneficiary in their estate plans or wills. These new mission partners join the existing members of the Society and help ensure the long-term viability of the school. If you have included Regis Jesuit in your will/estate plans, but John have not previously informed the school, Francis Regis please let us know. Per your wishes and Legacy intentions, we would like to recognize you! Society ST.
Sending our four children to Regis Jesuit was our way of communicating to them that God and faith are foundational to everything we do. Their four years at Regis laid the foundation for who they are today, and they are better people because of their experiences. Leaving Regis Jesuit in our will is one way we can say thanks, and hopefully make the same opportunity available to others in the future. BILL FORTUNE ’65
HONORED BY THE SOCIETY OF JESUS On Wednesday, September 25, 2019, the Jesuits of the USA Central and Southern Province named William J. Fortune ’65 a Founder of the Province. In the organization’s 150 years, it has only named seven other Founders—men and women who have shown a “generous commitment in support for the works of the Society of Jesus around the world.” To those who know Bill Fortune, this rare and significant award made complete sense. “Bill has, for so many years, across so many Jesuit missions, helped to build up the quality and strength and hope for all of what the Jesuit programs can do in our Province,” says Tom Reynolds, Province Assistant for Higher Education with the Central and Southern Province of the Society of Jesus. “His commitment to justice and Jesuit education is unmatched. But he’s also very humble. He gets so much done because he’s never looking for credit. He just works quietly and gets it done.”
Fortune grew up in Denver and still lives within a few miles of his childhood home. His family attended St. Vincent de Paul parish and Fortune attended both Regis Jesuit High School and Regis University. When examining his relationship with the Society of Jesus, Fortune describes a bond much like you’d describe a lifelong friend. “These guys, the Jesuits, they become your buddies first. They are fellow human beings,” he says, then jokes, “That’s how they hook you!” Fortune says he was “hooked” by the Jesuits because they practice a faith that “you can get your hands dirty with. It’s an everyday, practical spirituality. They encourage and direct us to recognize Jesus in everyday life and everyday people, particularly those on the margins, those who are struggling.” Clearly, Fortune took that call to serve others quite personally. Among many other efforts, he is a mission partner for Escuela de Guadalupe, Seeds of Hope, Arrupe Jesuit High School, Regis University, the Ignatian Volunteer Corps and Sacred Heart Jesuit Retreat House. For his alma mater, Regis Jesuit High School, Fortune has made numerous gifts to support students whose families cannot afford tuition. “One of my primary focuses is education of the marginalized,” says Fortune. “I want to give them a chance to receive a Catholic education. And one of Regis’s primary missions is to educate Men and Women with and for Others. I think that is critical, even more today than when I was a kid. Kids coming out of our Catholic schools must come out knowing that their education does not allow them to live in a vacuum. Their education is not just about building their pocketbooks, but about making this a better world. Regis Jesuit does that.”
Bill Fortune '65 was presented with a plaque to recognize him as Founder of the USA Central and Southern Province from Fr. John Fitzgibbons, SJ, President of Regis University.
When asked about his efforts across Colorado, Fortune displays the humility Reynolds described, “The reality is, in my life, I started on third base. I’ve been incredibly lucky educationally and financially,” Fortune says. “I have also been surrounded by great Jesuits who taught me that you have to make a difference in this world, help those who are not nearly as fortunate as you are.” Then he quips with a laugh, “And the Jesuits presented me with a lot of opportunities to help people in those circumstances!”

GIFTS OF OPPORTUNITY One in four students at Regis Jesuit High School is able to attend in part because of the generosity of many. We are grateful to our mission partners who continue to help us remove economic barriers to entry and fulsome participation in the life of the school with a financial aid program that strives to meet the needs of our community. We uphold our mission when we attract, retain and inspire an exceptional and diverse student body, creating a learning environment that better prepares every Regis Jesuit student to be an empathetic, global citizen. As we look to the future, we remain committed to a hope-filled vision that ensures any family who aspires to receive the excellence and formation of a Catholic, Jesuit education can afford to do so. Thank you for providing our young men and women with the opportunity of a Regis Jesuit education!

Giving Impact: Holistic Education
GENEROUS DONORS
PROVIDE SOCIAL JUSTICE IMMERSION TRIP FOR RJ STUDENTS For the past six years, Regis Jesuit students have attended a unique event at the United Nations called the Commission on the Status of Women. During the 2018-19 school year, generous donors and past parents, Marion and George Curtis underwrote and reinstated our sponsorship at the UN making this incredible immersion trip accessible for our students. The Curtises reflected, “Engagement with the world by being with and for others is at the heart of Jesuit education. This UN Conference is a living example of that goal. As former teachers, we are thrilled to support this experience and the ways RJHS participants share their insights and plan their actions." The focus of this commission centers on access to and participation of women and girls in education, training, science and technology, including the promotion of women’s equal access to full employment. The commission has taken place for the last 25 years. According to Chris Vela, RJ Diversity Director and trip organizer, “The work of the United Nations shows how the mission of Regis Jesuit is not something to pigeonhole into ‘what I learned at Regis,’ but shows concrete ways in which the mission can be lived out globally and locally. Our students experience global
connections and see local efforts that are intertwined. This offers them specific examples of faith working for justice, showing them what justice looks like.” A total of 12 students—six girls and six boys—and two faculty chaperones attended the 2019 Commission back in March. This school year, those students formed a UNESCO club (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) focused on helping further the Sustainable Goals of the UN, which align with the Jesuit Universal Apostolic Preferences - showing the way to God, walking with the excluded, journeying with youth, caring for our common home. One of the best aspects of this trip is that students view social justice up close and personal. As attendee Shay Zilvitis ’20 concluded, “I am very grateful to have been on this life-changing trip. I have learned tremendously about women and problems in my own community and world. I cannot wait to share what I learned.” We are grateful for mission partners who advocate for transformational programs for our RJ students.
Now that I look back, I realize how ignorant I was about many topics on women. The information that I learned has provided me so much to take back and incorporate at Regis Jesuit.” –Daniella Elliott ’20

REGIS JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL
Regis Meets Regis: While at the conference, our delegation of students had the opportunity to meet up with students from Regis High School in NYC, one of the more than 80 schools in Jesuit Schools Network.
Thank you for making this trip possible with your support. We all had an incredible time in New York and learned the issues facing women in the United States and around the world. It was an amazing experience.” – Nathan Boesen ’20

GIVING IMPACT: Endowed Schol arships
THE JAKE JARMAN ’12 SCHOLARSHIP: HONORING THE LOVE AND LEGACY OF JAKE Kathleen and Bryan Jarman moved from Boulder to Denver to give their sons, Jake ’12 and Joe ’16 the opportunity to attend Regis Jesuit High School. According to the couple, “We wanted our boys to have a Jesuit education and experience the RJ brotherhood.” In October 2013, one year after Jake’s graduation from Regis Jesuit, 70 of his classmates traveled across the country to sit shoulder-to-shoulder as they attended Jake’s untimely funeral. It is this same brotherhood that stills lifts up the Jarman family six years later. Two of Jake’s close RJ friends, Michael Harpole ’12 and Wes Hackemer ’12 felt this terrible loss deeply. “Mourning was intense. When we lost Jake, we lost our brother and had to rally around one another to cope with the pain. We have a lifelong bond because of our time at Regis (Jesuit) with Jake.” What drew friends to Jake was his infectious smile, his ability to spin a good story, and the unmatched love and care that he had for his friends. “You could have been with Jake at football practice, class, skiing or wherever that would give birth to one of Jake’s tales that was so funny, ridiculous and spirited that you had to let him keep going. Jake embodied what it meant to be a Man with and for Others. He would stand up for his friends no matter what.”
36
REGIS JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL
Last May, Michael and Wes contacted Regis Jesuit to discuss honoring Jake’s legacy with an endowed scholarship. Michael and Wes shared, “We want to give another student an opportunity to have this same lifelong bond that we have.” Together, their class has set an amazing goal to endow the Jake Jarman ’12 Scholarship at the $100,000 level. The “Ride with Jake” team of 18 cycled the Triple Bypass through the Rockies in July showing their passion and desire to make sure Jake is remembered. Plans are in the works for a golf tournament in Jake’s honor (he reportedly liked to play golf barefoot!) and there is a donation page through RJ's Community First Foundation website. St. Ignatius believed “Love is shown more in deeds than in words.” Kathleen and Bryan Jarman summed it best, “Our hearts are full. We are unbelievably touched that these boys, who are so very busy with their new careers and lives, have made the memory of their friend Jake a priority in their lives.” Jake’s legacy shines through their loving deeds. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS Endowed scholarships at Regis Jesuit High School help provide tuition assistance to talented students with financial need. The donors of these scholarships have made a significant investment to ensure future generations of Raiders can attend and benefit from a Regis Jesuit education. A named endowed scholarship requires a minimum contribution of $100,000 over five years, with an initial gift of $20,000. Once the fund is established, it pays out 4% of the three-year rolling average of the fund to award each year. Alumni Class Scholarships

REGIS JESUIT’S ENDOWMENT MILESTONES OF IMPACT
2018-19 STATS
One of the ways in which we ensure a vibrant future for Regis Jesuit is through our ongoing commitment to grow our endowment. A strong endowment gives us confidence to plan and make strategic decisions that will secure long-term access and affordability of the school. Our endowment ensures we can pursue our mission in perpetuity by investing in our most valuable resources—our students, faculty, programs and campus.
Endowment Payout:
$545,530
Endowment funds are carefully invested and managed under the supervision of Regis Jesuit’s Investment Committee and Board of Trustees and annually paying out 4%, a portion of the income generated from the invested funds. The remainder is reinvested to ensure the school’s financial stability for generations to come.
Earnings and Unrealized Gains from Endowed Investments:
$983,209 In summer 2019, Regis Jesuit High School reached an important milestone in our commitment to access and affordability by attaining $20 million in our endowment, a milestone goal that the board of trustees set for 2020. We are grateful to every contributor who has helped us continue to grow the impact of our endowment!

SOCIAL JUSTICE A group of students from RJ Media, our student-run media program and faculty participated in a trip to the San Diego/Tijuana, Mexico border where they engaged in research, social documentary filmmaking and working directly with refugees and asylum seekers.
VOLUNTEERS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE! Our volunteers' willingness to say YES is one of Regis Jesuit's most valuable resources. Yes, I will help coach. Yes, I will lead that 7:00 am meeting. Yes, I will hand out hot dogs until the game is over. Yes, I will come in at cookie time. Yes, I will gather LARK auction items. Yes, I will load and unload that truck from 9:00 am until midnight. Yes, I will count those Raider Raffle tickets. Yes, I will drive for Freshman Retreat. Yes, I will. Our volunteers’ time and talent is a treasure of Regis Jesuit. They not only help us achieve our mission, they live daily as Men and Women with and for Others.
THANK YOU! 40

REGIS JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL
Giving Impact: Campus Renewal & Innovation
THE REGIS JESUIT BELL TOWER RENOVATION HONORS FR. DAVE WAYNE, SJ A ringing bell draws our attention, calling us out of ourselves. A church bell ringing does more than just that; it calls us back to God. Long a part of Judeo-Christian practices, bells sounding in the towers of famous Churches have marked the passing of time, and more importantly, called people to worship. The bells in the tower on Regis Jesuit’s campus are ringing once again thanks to the generosity of a Regis Jesuit family who wished to honor the late Fr. Dave Wayne, SJ by their restoration.
Fr. Dave Wayne, SJ
The tower in which the restored bells hang is adjacent to the Blessed Rupert Mayer Chapel, part of the original building on Campbell Campus built in 1990 that is now the Girls Division. Construction of the chapel and bell tower was made possible by donors from Munich, Germany, committed to the beatification of the Jesuit priest Rupert Mayer who hailed from their town. The two bells were a gift from the Lord Mayor of Munich—the platinum one dates back to the 1800s and the gold is thought to be from a ship from similar timeframe. Following Church tradition, the newlyrestored bells will ring to call our school community together for Mass, as well as to mark retreats, alumni gatherings and in honor of special Jesuit feast days.
In their ringing, we also honor the legacy of Fr. Dave Wayne, SJ. He served the Regis Jesuit community as assistant principal in 1975 and then returned to the school and served in various roles from 1995 until he passed away in May 2014. Fr. Dave was best known for his gentle, kind manner and ability to fix almost anything on campus. He was a fixture in the school, dressed in his daily garb of suspenders with work pants and a white shirt. A Jesuit for 58 years and a priest for 45, his last role, along with maintenance at both the high school and the Jesuit residence, was as pastoral minister for the Girls Division. The benefactor family wanted to honor Fr. Dave by restoring the bell tower to thank him for his “invaluable friendship” to them. We wish to thank the family for their generosity in honoring Fr. Dave and lifting our spirits through this gift. Whenever the bells in the tower ring, the chimes will elevate our hearts, draw us to God and remind us of the many years of service of Fr. Dave Wayne, SJ for Regis Jesuit High School and for the greater glory of God.

Dear Regis Jesuit Community, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am grateful for the contributions of everyone listed in this report in support of an institution I love so much. As dozens of my brother alumni and I gathered this fall for our 45th reunion, we did so with a strong sense of pride. To be a part of a long tradition that is so clearly thriving today makes us feel great about being Raider alumni. And truly, there is so much to admire. The school’s strong enrollment once again is a tangible indication that our enduring mission of forming Men and Women with and for Others continues to resonate with our families and greater community. The Board of Trustees takes seriously its responsibility to safeguard the Catholic, Jesuit mission and identity of the school, as well as its responsibility to ensure that the school can attract and retain a quality faculty so that we can provide excellent education to our students. I can tell you that these commitments have stood the test of time. I am happy to report that our financial position is secure and strong. Currently, one in four students receives financial aid with an average award of more than $11,000 for the 2019-20 school year. We met one of our strategic goals this summer when our endowment crested the $20 million mark, growing by 53% in just four years. We thank everyone who has helped us achieve this milestone. The growth of the endowment is one reason we were able to hold our 48
REGIS JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL
tuition increase to the lowest level on record since 1985—something that would not be possible without strong leadership, good stewardship of our resources and the pursuit of excellence and sustainability without excess. As we move forward, we remain focused on expanding our capacity to meet financial need and even further removing barriers to access. And we also prepare ourselves to renew our response to the call of the Gospel by offering new and innovative learning experiences for the promotion of a more just world. Our success is assured by the dedication of our Board of Trustees and their service to our mission. I would like to welcome new Trustees, Mrs. Peg BradleyDoppes, Mrs. Annie McBournie and Mr. Dave Steiner ’71. The experience, wisdom and passion that my fellow board members bring to the institution is extraordinary, and I am grateful to each of them for their ongoing leadership. And thank you, our readers, for your continued support of Regis Jesuit and our ongoing pursuit of the magis. AMDG,
