Down Memory Lane Life lesson: Ignoring it won’t make it go away My being in the hospital when the local paper had my Secret Dreams in the Senior Section caused me to think about our time there with Mom and the words I wrote about it.

I like the photo because it looks like her age. It needs cropping some. For some reason the paragraphs are couple sentences apart.

It ends with the date of Mom’s death.

“Ray, it is time to leavefor the doctor.”

Doris Butt That I remember saying. The next thing I know Ray and I are leaving his office with only a single recollection of him standing in front of me. Nothing else. Getting weighed didn’t even faze me.

When we came home I took a nap in my recliner and when I woke up I felt fine. We decided to get the prescribed blood tests then go back to the doctor and ask about it.

However, when I felt funny the next day, we went to the emergency room which led to a two day stay in the hospital. I learned I have a strong heart, no clogged arteries and my brain shows no sign of damage. I passed every test they gave me. Thank you, Jesus.

There was no conclusion on what caused my forgetfulness. It was a puzzle because you don’t communicate when you have a stroke and I answered all the questions my doctor asked me. Should he have noticed?

Maybe?

Ray and I learned a lesson. When I am acting “funny,” it is best not to ignore it.

We wisely didn’t ignore Ray’s chest pains, resulting in six life saving stents.

Perhaps one of you have had the same problem and can send me some thoughts on it.

I want to add more to my words here for when I was in the hospital one of my columns appeared in the local senior section of the paper. It recalled the time when Mom was in the same hospital at the end of her life. Ray brought the paper in for me to read.

We shed a few tears together. I am going to share it with you. I consider it one of my best columns. It appeared here in in 1999. It makes an impression.

Espresso-Scented Coffee Cake ■8 ■ Tbs unsalted butter, chilled and diced, plus more for the pan ■2 ■ cups all-purpose flour ■2 ■ cups light brown sugar ■1 ■ tsp cinnamon ■■ 3⁄4 cup pecans, toasted and coarsely choppedv ■1 ■ 1⁄2 tsps baking powder ■■ 3⁄4 tsp baking soda Serves 8 to 10

1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter the bottom and sides of a springform pan and then cut a sheet of parchment paper to fit the bottom of the pan. Place the paper in the pan and then butter the paper. Butter the sides and bottom of a ramekin and place, right-side up, in the center of the pan.

2. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, brown sugar and cinnamon. Add the diced butter and rub the mixture between your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs. Remove 3/4 cup to a small bowl and add the chopped pecans; set aside.

3. Add the baking powder, baking soda and salt to the large bowl with the flour mixture and stir to combine. In a medium bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, dissolved espresso, and vanilla and then stir them into the dry ingredients just until well blended. The batter should be quite thick.

4. Ladle half of the butter into the prepared pan and spread evenly with a spatula. Sprinkle half of the nut mixture over the batter. Repeat with the remaining batter and nut mixture. Place the pan on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until a tester inserted into the area around the ramekin comes out clean, 40 to 45 minutes.

5. Cool the cake to room temperature, about 45 minutes. Then run a sharp knife around the inside edge of the pan to loosen the cake. Run the knife around the outside of the ramekin to loosen it from the cake. Gently remove the ramekin and the sides of the pan. Dust the cake with confectioners’ sugar, drizzle the glaze over the top, and serve.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk and espresso powder until the espresso has dissolved. Add the cream cheese. With an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the mixture until blended, and then gradually beat in the confectioners’ sugar.

Moores Hill veteran honored to go on Honor Flight

He had heard about the Honor Flight trips on the news. He had thought about participating, but did not know how to get involved.

But during a trip to the Cincinnati Veterans Administration Medical Center, he was presented with the opportunity, said Charles “Charlie Bill” McKinley, 82, Moores Hill.

“They gave me a card with a number on it. I called it and everything fell into place,” said McKinley.

Now the Korean War veteran will have a chance to see the national war memorials for the first time during his one-day trip to Washington, D.C. Tuesday, May 20. He will be accompanied by his chaperone and nephew, Sean Donka, Dillsboro.

The mission of Honor Flight Tri-State is to “fly as many World War II and Korean War veterans to see their memorials in Washington, D.C., as fast as we can.”

The trip is provided at no cost to veterans.

Originally from various areas of Southeastern Indiana, McKinley was drafted into the military in 1951. He reported for duty with two other men from the area.

Out of 10 people that day, the three from Indiana were given their choice of military branch.

Mckinley said he picked the Marines

because it seemed to best fit his way of thinking. The three Southeastern Indiana residents then headed off together for basic training in California, he said.

He previously considered joining the military. Although he was a little bit leary, like everyone else, he was not worried about serving during the war, he said.

“I wasn’t afraid.

I just took what ever came,” s a i d McKinley, who lost an u n c l e Everett McKinley, during World War II. In California he became part of an engineering battalion. His platoon won an award at the end of boot camp and he was asked three times if he was interested in joining the elite forces. But he never agreed to go, he said.

Though many people are quick to refer to Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer, the day is much more than that.

Initially known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember those military members who died in service of the country.

The origins of Memorial Day remain a topic of debate. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, N.Y. as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. However, the roots of Memorial Day likely run much deeper, as researchers at Duke University note that during the Civil War, organized women’s groups in the south had begun to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers.

Memorial Day as we know it today can

During the Civil War, captured Union soldiers were held at the Charleston Race Course and hundreds died during captivity.

When the Civil War ended, the May Day gathering was organized as a memorial to all the men who had died during captivity.

The burial ground was landscaped, and those freed as a result of the Civil War played an integral role in the event at the Charleston Race Course.

He hopes to make some more memories with his nephew during the honor flight. He is excited to see the Korean War memorial as well as the World War II memorial, he said.

McKinley visited Washington, D.C., briefly one time whe he was stationed in Virgina during his two years in the military. But he has never seen the memorials.

Exercise & the older woman

The aging process has a way of making people risk-averse. Financial advisors typically recommend that men and women steer clear of risky investments as they age, and men and women over 50 often make lifestyle choices to reduce their risk of developing certain medical conditions. As women age, some may feel exercise is simply too risky. Hormonal changes brought on by aging decrease a woman’s bone density, and that fact makes many women over 50 hesitant to embrace exercise. But exercise plays a key role in helping women over 50 secure their long-term health and reduce their risk of injury.

Exercise promotes independence Some women feel that exercising after 50 increases their risk of injury, which can make them overly dependent on their loved ones. But exercise, in particular strength training, slows bone deterioration, helping bones stay stronger longer and reducing a woman’s risk of suffering a potentially debilitating injury. Independence is especially important to seniors, many of whom spent years planning their retire-

ments and awaiting the day when they would be free to travel at their leisure.

Daily exercise can help women maintain that independence by reducing their risk of injury and other ailments that can be confining.

Exercise can improve sleep Some women who are fighting fatigue may feel that routine exercise will only make them more tired.

But exercise actually improves energy levels and makes it easier to get a better night’s rest. Numerous studies have shown that routine exercise can improve sleep quality and even increase energy levels throughout the day, something that should raise an eyebrow among women who do not exercise but routinely find themselves fighting fatigue. A more quality night’s rest improves vitality, making it easier for women to exercise and make it through the day without feeling fatigued.

Exercise benefits those with limited mobility Women over 50 with limited mobility may feel that exercise serves no purpose because of their disabil-

ity or physical condition. But even women confined to wheelchairs or those forced to walk with a cane or walker can benefit from cardiovascular exercise and even light strength training. Such exercises can improve a woman’s range of motion while reducing her risk of heart disease.

It’s never too late to start exercising. Many aging women feel their time to embrace exercise has long since passed. But it’s never too late to start exercising. Women should take a conservative approach when exercising after a long hiatus, beginning with a slow walk around the neighborhood or a local park. Walking is a great beginner’s exercise, as it provides a good cardiovascular workout while working a variety of muscle groups. As your body readjusts to physical activity, gradually increase the intensity of your exercise sessions, adding some strength training, ideally under the supervision of a professional. Always stretch immediately after each exercise session, and give your body ample time to recover, especially when you begin your new regimen.

Army of the Republic, a veterans’ organization for men who served in the Civil War, General Logan issued a proclamation just five days after the Charleston event that called for Decoration Day to be observed annually across the country.

Logan preferred the event not be held o n the anniversary of any particular battle, and thus the day was observed for the first time on May 30.

Celebrating the day in May also was significant to event organizers because May is a month when flowers are in bloom, making it easier for observers of the holiday to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers.

In 1868, events were held at more than 180 cemeteries in 27 states, and those figures nearly doubled in 1869. By 1890, every northern state o f ficially recognized Decoration Day as a state holiday.

But southern states honored their dead on a different day until after World War I, when the holiday was changed to recognize Americans who died in any war and not just the Civil War. Nearly every state now celebrates Memorial Day, a name for the holiday first used in 1882, on the last Monday in May.

FEMA: Planning crucial to prevent disaster from becoming nightmare Spring in the Midwest brings the potential for severe weather, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency is encouraging everyone to take steps now to ensure your family is prepared. Don’t forget to consider the safety of your finances before a severe storm threatens your area.

“Don’t hinder your recovery if disaster strikes.

Take the time now to ensure critical documents are safely stored, valuables are adequately insured, and potential spending needs are planned for,” said Andrew Velasquez III, regional administrator, FEMA Region V. Remember these three steps: Identify, Enroll & Plan.

1. Identify your important documents and place them in a safe space: You can use FEMA’s Safeguarding Your Valuables activity and Emergency Financial First Aid Kit to help get you started.

■■Scan important records such as medical records and financial documents, and save the files on disk or flash drives. Password-protect the data you have stored and keep the backup records in a

safe deposit box or other offsite location.

■■If you have no way to scan/copy records, store them in a flood and fireproof home safe or a safe deposit box. Avoid storing on the floor of a basement, especially if it is prone to flooding.

■■Include any records that you may need immediately, such as medical records or medical contact information, in your disaster kit.

2. Enroll in online banking, direct deposit and/or Go Direct to minimize disruptions to receiving paychecks or any government benefits you may receive.

■■Consider keeping a small amount of cash or traveler’s checks on hand in case

ATMs or credit cards are not working.

3. Plan ahead of time to recover by considering your post-disaster needs and preparing for them now.

■■Make a record of your personal property for insurance purposes, and if possible, take photos or a video of your home. Consider keeping a copy on a CD or flash drive in your disaster kit, so that you can provide it to your insurance company following a loss.

■■Ensure you’re adequately insured. Contact your insurance agent to review your insurance coverage so your home is financially protected.

■■Identify potential spending needs now, and plan for ways to meet those needs.

Retired teachers working with Amazon Outreach The Dearborn County Retired Teachers recently sent sixty-five children’s dresses, ten mamma dresses, and twenty-seven pair of boys’ shorts to Brazil through Amazon Outreach, a non-denominational mission service group.

Jean Vaughan, Lawrenceburg, cochair of the retired teachers’ state award-winning pillowcase dress project, recently met Della Menchhofer, Versailles, in Batesville to take the outfits to the four million people living along the Amazon River from Manaus to Pariachian, Brazil. Vaughan also shared the pillowcase dress pattern and offered lots of lace and notions for the mission project.

This year the team of fifteen to twenty mission volunteers will be working with the Smile Train, a group of doctors specializing in the cleft lip/ cleft palette.

Menchhofer has been going on the mission trip for the last seventeen years. Originally urged to join by her former college roommate, she continues each year on the short term mission trip where she serves as a nurse to the medical team.

Taking only three outfits and the clothes she wears, she packs each of her two pieces of luggage with fifty pounds of clothes, flip flops, vitamins, and other over-the-counter medicines.

Menchhofer’s pride in the work of the mission is most evident when she talks of the man with the terribly ulcer-

ated foot whom they were able to save.

She has worked with patients as young as seven days old. Life expectancy in the jungle is fifty-six years of age.

People from the surrounding villages walk one hour to get to the medical boat on the river. Then they wait in line for an hour to be seen by the doctor and another hour to receive their over-thecounter medicines. Of course, it takes yet another hour to return home.

In addition to supplying the villages with clothing, the mission teaches Bible School lessons, builds wells for fresh water, leaves a little supply of gasoline for the occasional generator, and builds simple playgrounds for the children.

The Dearborn County Retired Teachers pillowcase dress project started at Hamelin Chapel when co-chair Gerri Barber brought the pillowcase dress pattern to the retired teachers’ coffee group so that they could begin making dresses for a mission trip to Haiti sponsored by the church.

Jean Vaughan’s step-daughter Jennifer Vaughan hand-delivered the first fifty dresses to the tent cities in Haiti.

She came back with the story of one dress which was shared by two mothers. One mother would wear the dress to church one week while the second mother stayed home to babysit.

The next week the women traded places. Upon hearing that story, the project developed and expanded so that over two thousand dresses have been made and distributed to villages in Haiti, Brazil, and Tanzania. Each of the dresses have been hand-delivered so that the dresses arrive safely to the intended people.

The retired teachers continue to meet each Thursday at the Lawrenceburg Community Center where their materials and notions are kept. The Adult Center graciously sets up/tears down

each week for the retirees and provides ice for the seamstresses to keep their packed lunches.

Volunteers are needed to help cut out material, sew, decorate or otherwise help with the dress-making. One does not need to be an accomplished seamstress to participate. One woman with dementia was able to help with making the yo-yo’s used in the decoration of the dresses or the matching hair pieces for the girls’ hair.

Women, particularly those over 50, who begin to feel physical discomfort in their chest or any of the aforementioned symptoms should consult their physicians immediately.

Secret Dreams

Mom is in the hospital.

Carts rattle, nurses scurry, and in the distance TVs sound. Somewhere there is laughter. My husband Ray and I sit apart from all of that.

It is Mom’s eighth day in the hospital. She is very ill. I have called my sister and brother-in-law to come. I know her time with us is passing minute by minute.

Little did I realize when she came to spend a Florida winter with us, Iwould deny her of her last days at her beloved Indiana farmstead.

She becomes weaker, but we, including Mom, are slow to accept the seriousness of her condition. Suddenly, after an anxious night, we make the fateful call. This time the flashing light stops at our place. There is a helpless feeling as attendants rush about then bundle her away to the emergencyroom.

The attending doctor studies her. She answers his questions and then he glances away while saying, as if to himself, “She will make it.”

“She will be 92 in two weeks.” He acknowledges my comment with only a glance.

Days pass with Mom in the hospital. Shebecomes weaker. Her heart has given out.

At first, she has short alert periods. We chat for a few minutes about the grandchildren or the weather then she drifts away.

Once she mentions that she has dreams. Pretty dreams, she says. I do not ask for details, I am not sure why, maybe I do not want to invade her private dream world, her secret dreams.

Now she just rests, waiting her time.

As I sit in the sterile hospital surroundings, I reminisce about when Ray and I lived “across the hall” in their large farmhouse some 20 years.

After we went to work, we could depend on Mom to see if our children were up and ready to meet the bus. I smile to myself, as I think how she also made her rounds to see that the lights, stove, and iron were off. Probably for good reason.

She enjoyed the grandchildren.

I often wonder if her period with them was happier than my sister’s and my youth.

Those were “hard times” my father oftensaid. They were desperate Depression days heightened by the loss of a barn at harvest time, the death of an infant, and my own illness as a child. Our family times together on the farmstead were a contrast of happy days.

Mom stirs, I go to her bedside. Suddenly, her hands begin to move deliberately and gracefully through the air. Then mom laughs, louder and jollier than I have heard her laugh in years.

Ray gets up and puts his arm around me. I shed a tear but am comforted that Mom is happy in her secret dreams.

Mom, Ida Muntz, passed away March 14,1999. I still miss her very much.

My being in the hospital when the local paper had my Secret Dreams in the Senior Section caused me to think about our time there with Mom and the words I wrote about it.

I like the photo because it looks like her age. It needs cropping some. For some reason the paragraphs are couple sentences apart. It ends with the date of Mom’s death.
