Fifty years, three kids, and eight grandkids later they’re still together. Steve and Peggy Greive Klepper, Toledo, Ohio, marked the 50th anniversary of their introduction at the Aurora Farmers Fair at the Aurora Farmers Fair. The trip was a surprise. She thought they were going to meet friends at Belterra Casino in Switzerland County. They pulled in to Aurora and into a parking lot. “I kept saying ‘no, we’re not going to the Fair.’ He said ‘yes we are,’” said Peggy Klepper. It was a romantic surprise. They were introduced through friends at Ullrich’s Drug Store, on Third Street, at the time a major hang out for young people. Steve Klepper saw the Farmers Fair theme of Childhood Memories, and knew since he had a meeting scheduled in Cincinnati, he would take his wife of 45 years back to the place they met. They were both 16 at the time, and had a major hurdle to overcome. She was an Aurora girl, he a Lawrence-
burg boy. Not quite Romeo and Juliet, but close. “Aurora and Lawrenceburg hated each other at the time,” said Peggy Klepper with a laugh. Steve Klepper was at the Fair with his buddy Bill Ritzmann. “She picked the wrong guy,” joked Steve Klepper, alluding to Bill Ritzmann becoming a bank president. Peggy Klepper at first didn’t like Steve. “He was too nice. I grew up with five brothers and all the kids in the neighborhood were boys too,” she said. She tilted her head and looked at him in the shadow of the ferris wheel. “He was always so sweet. He brought me flowers. He still is sweet,” she added. Steve Klepper was dating another girl at the time, but was so impressed with Peggy he broke up with the other girl, and “then came and spent another night with Peggy at the fair.” They married 45 years ago, at the ages of 20 and 21. “We were so young,” said Peggy Klepper, who graduated from Aurora High School in 1966. He proposed to her by
