NEWS BRIEFS City planning, BZA boards meet GREENDALE- The City of Greendale Planning Commission will hold a hearing at 6 p.m. Monday, June 27, at the city administration building, 500 Ridge Ave., to review and discuss Flossie Drive extension as well as dental office conception presentation. The Greendale Board of Zoning Appeals will then hold a hearing at 7 p.m. to review a landscaping variance for Zimmer Tractor.

Postcards help refresh voter list INDIANAPOLIS -Some Hoosier voters will start receiving postcards in the mail from the Secretary of State Election Division asking them to confirm their current address or update their voter registration information. Voters who receive this postcard must respond to ensure their voter registration information is accurate. In May, the office sent postcards to all active Hoosier voters to identify outdated voter information. The office is now sending a second round of forwardable postcards to vot-

ers whose first postcard was returned as an undeliverable address, asking them to take action by confirming or updating their registration information. Hoosiers who receive a second postcard should fill it out and promptly return it to the Secretary of State Election Division. Voters who received a second postcard have until Aug. 5 to confirm or update their voter information. Voters who do not confirm or update their information will have their record put on the inactive list. Being on the inactive list does not mean a voter cannot vote. It simply means a voter’s record appears to have an incorrect address and the voter did not update or confirm their information. The voter will still be eligible to vote in November. If the voter casts a ballot from that address in November, their record will be reclassified as active. If they do not vote in November, they can still vote in the federal elections of 2018. If they do not vote in any election prior to January 2019, the county voter registration office may then remove them from the poll lists. The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 requires regular voter list updating. Two

federal election cycles (up to four years) must pass before a county may remove an inactive voter from the list. Federal law also says the state or county must attempt to contact the voter twice by mail before the voter’s record can be reclassified as inactive. All voters are encouraged to check their voter registration information online at www.indianavoters.com or at their local county clerk’s office and update their information if necessary. Voters may contact the Secretary of State’s office with questions at 1-866-IN-1VOTE, sos@sos.in.gov or 200 W. Washington Street Room 201, Indianapolis, IN 46204.

App helps locate Indiana Trails INDIANAPOLIS- Finding a trail to explore will be easier this year thanks to a new web application from the DNR Division of Outdoor Recreation. The web app, called “InDNR Trail Finder,” allows users to explore Indiana’s more than 3,600 miles of public trails, including federal, state, local and non-profit trails. The app is compatible with a variety of interfaces and uses data from the existing Indiana Trails Inventory.

The trail finder features information on trails for hiking, biking, mountain biking, horseback riding and motorized recreation. The app is at dnr.IN.gov/outdoor/4240. htm. App users will find an interactive map displaying Indiana’s trails. The map can be panned and zoomed. Users can search for trails by trail name, property name or location. The map can also be sorted by trail activity or surface type. Once users click on a trail, a pop-up box will provide information on mileage, surface type and the managing agency. Devices with an enabled GPS feature can be used to find trails near the user’s current location. This feature can be helpful when trying to navigate, especially at properties with multiple trails.

Trivia Q: The Cavaliers brought a major sports league championship to the city of Cleveland for the first time in 51-plus years with Sunday night’s 93-89 Game 7 victory over Golden State in the NBA Finals. What team won Cleveland’s last major title? A: On Dec. 27, 1964, the Cleveland Browns (11-3-1) defeated the Baltimore Colts 27-0 in the NFL Championship Game at Municipal Stadium. Scoreless at halftime, the Browns opened up with three second-half TD passes from Frank Ryan to Gary Collins, while future Hall of Fame fullback Jim Brown rushed for 140 yards.

1970 - Light-hitting Tigers shortstop Cesar Gutierrez collects seven hits in seven plate appearances during a 12-inning, 9-8 victory over the Indians in the second game of a doubleheader at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. With a season batting average of only .218, Gutierrez was benched for the first game of the twinbill, won by Detroit 7-2. In the nightcap, he erupts for six singles and a double off five Cleveland pitchers. Gutierrez goes 7-for-7 wearing the uniform number seven. Mickey Stanley drives in the winning run with a 12th-inning home run. Gutierrez is the first major leaguer with seven consecutive hits in a single game since Hall of Fame catcher/manager Wilbert (Uncle Robbie) Robinson of the Baltimore Orioles in 1892. Cesar’s career ends in 1971 with a .235 batting average, 128 hits and no home runs.

Star Series originated in 1975 at Bush Stadium in Indianapolis. Every series since has been a three game series, so there will always be a series winner. Each year a committee is appointed

to select the North s uad and another committee selects the South team. When class baseball arrived in 1997 the North-South dividing line was set at Ind. 32 and 36. The annual summer classic is moved around the state as communities bid to host it. Six time the series has been hosted by Jasper, with LaPorte, South Bend, Indiana State, and Ball State each having the series twice. Whiting's il City Stadium will be a first-time host in July. In Saturday doubleheader games the players wear special all-star uniforms. They don their varied high school uniforms for the Sunday showcase. The Greenfield, Indiana, driver started Saturday’s Kelsey Chevrolet series 25-lap feature from sixth position and uickly made his way to second behind Guilford’s Shawn Westerfeld, who had led from the beginning. As the leaders began to race into lap traffic, Leary found himself about a straightaway behind Westerfeld. When a car slowed on the backstretch, the caution flag came out, bringing the field back together. n the restart, it took Leary only two laps to get around Westerfeld for the lead. Leary ran on top for the rest of the way for his first win of the year and eighth of his career at Lawrenceburg. The rest of the sprint car top five, in order, was Westerfeld, Rushville’s Garrett Abrams, New Mexico’s Josh Hodges and Bedford’s Jordan Kinser. Sprint car heat race winners were Westerfeld, Leary and Abrams. Matt Goodnight won Saturday’s B-main. Indy’s Jarrett Andretti leads the Kelsey Chevrolet sprint cars point standings midway through the 2016 season.

victory lane, the crowd let him know how much they appreciated his hard work and effort to finally pick up a feature win. Spille finished second, followed by Aurora’s Matt Hamilton, Sunman’s Kyle Schornick and Lawrenceburg’s own Tyler Jones. Mods heat race winners were Kincaid, Hamilton and Spille. Lawrenceburg Speedway’s Bessler’s Pull N Save Hornets class features. After five runner-up finishes, Clark sealed the deal in Saturday’s 12-lap A-main. He started from the outside front row in the No. 49 car, alongside Hebron’s Ryan Eversole, who was subbing for Brandon Caudill. The race was close for all 12 laps, as Clark battled it out with Eversole and others. Hornets points leader Dalton Smith, of Richmond, battled Versailles driver Gage Clark had up front when his No. 3D car lost a finished second five times this year in wheel, ending his night. Rookie Adam Love of Lawrenceburg finished third for his best career finish on the home track, followed by another hometown rookie, Bradley Eberhart, and Harrison’s Tim Baird. Hornets heat race winners Saturday were Baird, Smith and Clark.

wins, his No. K12 car often suffered mechanical failure, was involved in a crash or would be passed for the win. Saturday was a case of pure destiny for Kincaid. The Vevay native got the lead early in the No. K12 car, starting on the outside of the front row and never looked back. Although Harrison’s David Spille fought hard in the No. 44 car to get the lead on the low side, Kincaid was able to maintain, keeping his momentum on the high side of the track. For most of Saturday’s 15-lap Impact Sport Pure Stock feature, it looked as though rookie Chris Combs Jr., of Hamilton, hio, would pick up his first career win. Combs dominated the feature in the No. 30 car, until a late caution bunched up the field. n the restart, Rising Sun’s Don Grace, in the No. D7 car, was able to get underneath Combs Jr., eventually taking the lead and holding on to win. Combs Jr. settled for second, followed by Milan’s Danny Eichler, Hanover’s Scott Williams and Aurora’s Steve pchurch. Pure Stocks heat race winners Saturday were Combs Jr. and Madison’s Will McRoberts.

INDIANAP LIS - A bases-loaded walk-off bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning prevented Lafayette Central Catholic from making Indiana high school baseball history in Saturday’s Class 2A state final at Victory Field. Jay Lorenz delivered a perfect bunt to score teammate Jake Katchur, giving No. 4-ranked Providence a 7-6 win over top-ranked Central Catholic, coached by former South Dearborn assistant Tim Bordenet. Providence’s Pioneers (273) had loaded the bases on three walks before Lorenz (3-4, 2 RBI) laid down the bunt that scored pinch-runner Katchur. It was the first baseball state title for the Scott Hornung-coached Clarksville crew. The finish capped a backand-forth contest that saw CC’s Knights (33-2) make their state-record ninth appearance in the state finals, including back-to-back 2A

finals. Central Catholic was trying to win its eighth baseball title, which would have tied it with LaPorte for the most in state history. Providence got on the board first, taking advantage of a leadoff double by Parker Graf in the bottom of the second. Graf stole second and came home on a two-out infield single by Lorenz. CC came back in the third. Luke Schrader led off with a double and Anthony Berumen followed with a single, moving Schrader to third. Adam Lovell reached on an error, driving home Schrader. Coy Cronk the doubled to bring in Berumen, and Lovell came home on a throwing error on the same play, giving the Knights a 3-1 lead. A five-run rally in the bottom of the fourth inning pushed the Pioneers in front 6-3. With one out, Joe Wilkinson walked and Lorenz and Juston Betz each singled. Brett Aria was hit by a pitch to score Wilkinson, and Jake Lewis hit a line drive

to center field that brought home Lorenz, Betz and Aria. Lewis wound up at third and then came home on Timmy Borden’s sacrifice bunt. Knights tied the game two innings later. Jackson Anthrop and Tyler Powers sandwiched a pair of singles around an out, and Luke

Schrader walked to load the bases. Berumen then drew a walk to plate Anthony. Lovell’s grounder to shortstop forced Berumen, but a throwing error to first allowed Powers and Schrader to come around and score, tying the game 6-6. CC put two runners on base with one out in the top of the seventh before Reece Davis struck out the next two batters. Davis (5-0) pitched the final 1-2/3 scoreless innings and picked up the win, striking out three. Noah Richardson (7-1) took the loss, allowing one run in three innings. Providence drew a championship-game record 11 walks, while the two teams combined for a finals-record 17 walks. Tr Watson of Providence was named winner of the IHSAA’s L.V. Northview pitcher Braydon Tucker kept his team within striking distance of Western (Howard County) through the first 4-1/2 of the Class 3A state championship baseball game Saturday night. His Brazil area teammates returned the favor with clutch hits in the fifth and sixth innings to deliver the Knights to their first team state title of any kind in school history. After tying the game in the bottom of the fifth, Hayden France drove home Alex Reinoehl for a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Tucker (10-1) shut down Western in order in the top of the seventh to preserve the win, capping an impressive performance. He ee BUNT, Page

From Page 6 allowed four hits and struck out nine, including the last two batters. Northview finished 25-6 under coach Craig Trout. Western, which won the 2012 Class 3A title, finished 18-14 for coach Quentin Brown. Western senior Dalton Leighty (9-3) pitched well in the loss, scattering seven hits over six innings, striking out six and walking just two.

Thriller in 4A

A safe call at first base with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning handed unranked Indianapolis Roncalli a 3-2 win over No. 1 Zionsville in Friday’s Class 4A state championship. Rebels' Will Harris grounded to shortstop and beat the throw to first base, allowing Jake Evans to score. Evans pinch-ran for Jake Franklin, who had singled to lead off the inning. It was the first baseball state championship for Roncalli’s south side Rebels (239) and second-year coach Aaron Kroll after three previous trips to the state finals (1982, 2012). Scoreless through three innings, Zionsville took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when pitcher Nick Prather singled up the middle, scoring Nolan Elsbury. Roncalli answered in the bottom of the fifth, tying it 1-1 when Brian Keeney

pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. A portion of all ticket sales will go to Lauren’s Fight for Cure organization. Field box seats are available for $28, outer mezzanine for $20, and lower view level for $17. Special group tickets are also available. Tickets can be purchased at www.reds. com/laurensfight or by calling a Reds account executive at (513) 765-7452.

scored from third on a Prather wild pitch. Keeney had pinch run for Cody Smith, who had singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on Dylan Williams' double to the left field. Zionsville regained the lead in the top of the sixth, when Roncalli hurler Michael McAvene threw a wild pitch, allowing Jacob Hurtubise to score from third. Hurtubise singled to lead off and advanced to third on a fielding error at third off Elsbury’s bat. Nick Schnell's two-out triple to the left-centerfield wall in the sixth scored Hayden Harper, knotting the score again at 2-2. The goahead run was stranded on a strikeout by the Eagles' James Meyer. Zionsville (30-5-1) made its first appearance in a baseball state title game under third-year coach Jered Moore.

Daleville’s first

Daleville’s Broncos earned their first state title in any sport, thanks in large part to the pitching of Brandon Vermillion and a big hit from classmate Elliott Jackson. Senior Vermillion pitched a complete-game shutout to beat Lanesville 4-0 in Saturday afternoon’s Class A baseball championship. Vermillion (11-4) allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out 11. Working out of jams in the third and fourth innings, he retired the final 11 batters of the game.

The state title win also was the 400th for coach Terry Turner in 26 years at Daleville. The game was scoreless through three innings, although Daleville (21-9) did threaten with two-out doubles in both the second and third innings. In the third inning, Lanesville’s Jon Will laid down a perfect one-out bunt to reach first. A sacrifice moved Will to third, and Brenden Bube was intentionally walked. But Vermillion got a soft grounder to shortstop that forced Bube at second, ending the inning. Daleville scored the game’s first run in the top of the fourth on T.J. Price’s leadoff home run – his fifth of the season – over the left field fence. Broncos struck for three big runs in the top of the fifth. Spencer Horsley singled with one out and Corbin Maddox reached first on an error. A double steal moved the pair to second and third. Following a strikeout, Price was intentionally walked to load the bases. Jackson drilled a line drive over first base that stayed just fair and Horsley, Maddox and Price all scored, giving Jackson 38 RBIs on the season and the Broncos the 4-0 lead. Lanesville, a first-time state finalist, finished 15-12 under coach Zach Payne. Bube took the loss for the Eagles, allowing one earned run and six hits over six innings.
