Everyone encouraged to take part in bicentennial parade Video hearings a cost savings to county The Ohio County Circuit Court is now using audiovisual equipment to conduct some of its hearings thanks to a generous grant of $15,000 from the Rising Sun Regional Foundation. Since Jan. 1, 2009, the Ohio County court system consists of only one court, the Ohio County Circuit Court. All cases for the county are heard in this one court. Ohio County is in a unique situation as the smallest county in the state and not having its own jail. This creates certain challenges for the Sheriff and his department because they are responsible for transportation of criminal defendants

to and from their hearings when the defendants remain incarcerated. The majority of Ohio County defendants are housed at the Switzerland County Law Enforcement Center, which is approximately 46 miles round trip to and from the Ohio County Sheriff’s office and/ or Ohio County Courthouse. This new equipment will allow the Court to conduct a number of hearings through audio visual connection between the Ohio County court house and the jail. This procedure will help with transportation costs and make officers more available for duty throughout Ohio

county and help with overall safety concerns in this county and at the court house. The new audio-visual equipment increases safety and allows a significant portion of the hearings to be conducted without the necessity and expense of transporting the defendant to and from the Switzerland County Law Enforcement Center. Sheriff Eldon Fancher is hopeful that the county taxpayers will see immediate savings with implementation of these procedures in costs of gasoline and staffing and long term savings on maintenance and wear and tear on sheriff department vehicles.

The Rising Sun Bicentennial Parade will be on Saturday, Oct.11 at 10:30 a.m. during the Navy Bean Fall Festival. The Festival Committee is asking families, businesses, organizations, clubs, sports teams, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, churches, high school alumni, etc. to design a float or entry to be part of the Rising Sun Bicentennial Parade.
