This year with Covid 19 restrictions across society including marts, this creates challenges for breeders and farmers in getting breeding stock to where it needs to be. With this in mind the society has partnered with Showstock.ie to create an online presence where Charollais breeders can advertise their stock for sale using videos and pictures of the stock. Showstock.ie also oers an event area where videos and pictures of sheep in the sale can be posted by breeders for potential purchasers to review stock prior to the sale. This should assist purchasers where viewing time will not be as open and exible as in a normal year. There is also an area for breeders to advertise semen for sale from the stock rams. We hope this online tool can grow this year and can be used into future years, it can be accessed at the below link:

Chairman’s Foreword When I was elected as Chairman of the ICSS last December it was an honour that I aspired to for many years but it was a role that I had watched the highs and indeed lows of many people that served in the position and I was aware of the challenges and rewards looming ahead. Full of anticipation we began the new year as a Committee to make 2020 a year to remember in the Society as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary. Never, in the wildest dreams of anyone could the crisis that is facing the society, the country and indeed the world ever have been predicted with the arrival of the pandemic Covid 19 to our beautiful little country in February. We are living through the worst crisis that has existed in the living history of all but the few positives have to be focused on and the main one being that we are now beginning to come out the other side and hopefully this trend will continue over the next few weeks and months. Through sacrifices including isolating ourselves from our loved ones and watching practically everything that is familiar and routine being rescheduled or mostly cancelled it has been a very tough and stressful times especially for peoples mental health. We have learned a lot of new phrases that have become part of our now normal routine including self-isolating, social distancing, lockdown and the significant pandemic. Now more than ever ‘it is okay not to be okay’ and we must look out for each other. In terms of the Society we have watched everything that we know as familiar being cancelled and with all shows including our All Ireland Championships also falling victim it has left a huge void in the hearts and heads of our members and supporters of the breed. Despite the forced closure of the hospitality sector which has resulted in a reduced demand for meat we are lucky that the price of lamb has remained relatively stable to date but farmers need to watch the weights because as low as

IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2020 | 3 the price is it is pointless giving ‘free’ meat to the factories. Year on year, we always advise breeders to cull head to adhere to the breed traits especially this year as we face the unknown market outlooks in the autumn which is traditionally our main selling season of both rams and ewes. Charollais are a lean breed that do not carry fat so cull hard to achieve the optimum carcass weight of 18-20kg. Some facilities are paying to 21kg currently so look around to determine the best available price. We as a Society are heading into an uncertain time in relation to sales. Will they proceed and in what format? To answer these is the most frustrating challenge to us as we are no different to any other faction in Society in that we simply do not know. We envisage and aspire that sales will take place but exactly how will ultimately be governed to us by the relevant authorities and new mart regulations that must adhered to while adhering to social distancing requirements and public safety. The safety of our members, their families and our wider Charollais community will be paramount in any decisions that we make as a Committee. I thank my Committee, all members of the Society and those that are helping us as a breed to adjust how we do our business. While we had to cancel our 30th anniversary plans for the time being we are looking forward to the time when we can meet for a chat and a social get together whilst not including ‘distancing’ in the mix. As Chairman, my hope for you all is to stay healthy and well and together we will get through this a stronger society for believing in each other. To quote Seamus Heaney as we struggle to get words to understand this...

if we can winter this one out, we can summer anywhere Yours sincerely David Darker ICSS Chairman May 2020

Origin of Charollais Sheep The breed originated in the Saone et Loire district of France. In the early 19th century the local breeds were crossed with Robert Bakewell’s Dishley or Leicester. From then on the breed remained pure but it was not until 1963 that it was actually named Charollais after the town of Charolles from where the French flock book is now run. Charollais sheep have even more to offer. Commercial lamb producers will become more focused on the following issues: Easy lambing: when lambs per acre count and a live lamb is vital. Difficult lambings from other terminal sires are expensive. The lighter skeletal structure of Charollais ensures an easy stress free birth for ewe and lamb, resulting in a very active lively lamb that’s ready to suckle. Charollais are also ideal for crossing with ewe lambs.

Days to slaughter: are reduced by excellent growth rates, and suit any system. Kill out %: due to a lighter skeleton as opposed to other terminal sire the lean meat content of a carcass is higher = more €€€€€€’s Stamp Progeny: Commercial lambs sired by a pedigree Charollais Ram are easily recognised and command a superior price in the sale ring. Markets: can be easily met by the breed as lambs flesh easily without going over fat at any weight. Value for Money: a Charollais Ram excels at work and will definitely serve more than his fair share of ewes! Added Value: to lambs out of hill ewes. A rapidly increasing market for Charollais Rams with more and more demand for this cross. As a breed, we look forward to future and the realisation for commercial farmers that they cannot be without a pedigree Charollais Ram.

Guide To Buying Pedigree Charollais Breeding Stock Points to Consider: • The sheep identity number and registration card and genotype certificate are correct • Teeth are correct • The body is well grown. Wedge shaped, long with wide loin, well muscled firm gigots forming bridge over hocks • Head broad and fine, pale pinky-grey with some cover • Wool fine, short and dense • Legs straight, medium boned, free from wool

• Pasterns short and upright • Feet straight and well formed • High Euro-star value with high accuracy • Genotype ARR/ARR Undesirable Points: • Narrow pointed shoulders • Dips or humps in the back • Black or brown spots bigger than a €2 coin • Excessive strong bone • Very white face • Dark legs • Excessive wool on the head

• Soft or long-sloping pasterns • Cow-hocked legs • Bowed Legs The sheep should stand well with a good alert headcarriage and move straight. Testicles of even and good size. The udder must be sound. The above describes a perfect sheep which is not easy to get. Perhaps it will help in choosing the closest you can find!!

The Introduction of Charollais Sheep into Ireland As I remember it, Charollais sheep were first brought into the North of Ireland in 1984 by three people. Firstly by Patrick McAllister who imported a ram and a ewe, secondly by Mr. Wayne Acheson (Flock J.M.) who I think brought in nine ewes and two ram’s. And Fergus and Marian Lysaght (Flock J.V.) imported five ewes and one ram. All arrived within three weeks of each other, at the time were very hard to acquire and all very expensive. At the time when they arrived into the country all had to spend three weeks in quarantine near Lough Neagh by the Veterinary Department before being allowed into Northern Ireland. Patrick’s ewe had a nice lamb but it died so he didn’t immediately register his flock at the time of entry, so his flock number was Q.V when eventually registered. The Dublin Veterinary Department would not allow our sheep into the South for six months, which they had to spend on a Farm in Northern Ireland. So there we were with our sheep many miles away from home. My sister in Hillsborough took them and in due course they arrived in Cork. Alas the ram turned out to be infertile and with no other Charollais rams in Southern Ireland we rang Jonathan Barber. Jonathan was as helpful as he could be but in those days the modern methods available now for AI were not an option. Jonathan did remember the McAllister ram in Antrim, so all our ewes arrived up in the Antrim hills with the lovely views which I hoped they all enjoyed. The Ram DO04011 did his job and all the ewes arrived home six weeks later with many thanks to Patrick McAllister. Lambing took place in April and we have continued to be great friends with Patrick to this day, recently enjoying a great talk with him on this article.

At a later date we made a further importation of a very nice ewe and ram. These again were left in Hillsborough but the ram came to Cork a little early as he was badly needed, unfortunately the ministry turned up to inspect him in Hillsborough and of course he had vanished. A pretty cross call from my sister was received and told to bring him back immediately. When both sheep were free to come south my sister received a letter from the ministry in which they said “If you are importing any further sheep please don’t let them wander!!” Rory Brown was next to bring in sheep but they not immediately available, but Rory helped us greatly on our promotion stands. We had a lucky escape on one occasion when we had parked the horse box in the member’s park at the R.D.S. We had to lead the rather unruly sheep out of the show grounds and loaded them by the tailboard. We were congratulating ourselves when Rory shouted Look! and rushed to the front where we had stupidly left the little door open. Rory was just in time to stop the exit of our sheep on to the main Merrion Road. By now the department in Southern Ireland allowed Charollais sheep to be imported direct, but were subject to inspection. Johnathan and Carroll Barber at last brought Rory’s sheep over in September 1987 and also brought a consignment for us. Edwin Kelso also brought in a large number of sheep so we had another active member who helped on the stands. We also on occasions had the early Northern Ireland members assisting us. In 1987 we were region 8 Northern Ireland & Republic of Ireland. In 1988 at Edwin’s suggestion we had informal meetings with a view to forming our own Southern Ireland region. Far as I can remember present were

IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2020 | 11 Edwin Kelso, Niall Connolly, Ronnie Hollinger, Tony Jackson, Marian Lysaght, Fergus Lysaght, Edward Thompson, Michael Ryan and Rory Brown. My memory is not infallible so apologies if I have left anyone out. In 1989 on the 23rd February, I have the minutes of an unofficial and informal meeting of the breeders of pedigree Charollais sheep in Southern Ireland which was held at Edwin’s house in Carlow. The members felt there was a need to form our own society as the number of breeders had expanded greatly and 230 Charollais females was the count in the Republic. In our first negotiations with the B.C.S.S we were made Region 9 Southern Ireland Branch. With this had come the promise of money to get our region off the ground with sponsorship, promotions etc. This finance never really came; in fact the newly formed Region 9 was receiving less finance from the B.C.S.S than we were sending back through registration fees, annual membership, lamb registration fees etc. Therefore the committee decided that this arrangement with the B.C.S.S was no longer financially suitable and should be discontinued. We decided to ask a member of the committee Michael Ryan to travel to France and contact the French Society governing body the U.P.R.A. Just before he was about to travel some important business arose and Michael was unable to travel. In Michael’s place his brother Paul was asked to travel. Paul contacted the French Society and their blessing was given to the formation of the Irish Charollais Sheep

Society. The B.C.S.S was then informed of the Region 9 committee’s intention. While making his negotiations met Solenn who I think I am correct in saying was working in the Charollais office and subsequently brought her home as his wife, which was particularly pleasant for us all and a great asset to the I.C.S.S. At the AGM on 5th February 1990 Edwin Kelso told the meeting that the I.C.S.S was now in the process of being formed. On November 6th 1990 the registration of the Society took place. At a committee meeting on 12th February Edwin Kelso decided not to stand as Chariman and Rory Brown was elected. Niall Connolly said he could not continue as secretary owing to the pressure of work and Ronnie Hollinger became secretary and treasurer. The committee was: Rory Brown (Chairman), Ronnie Hollinger (Secretary & Treasurer), Niall Connolly, Tony Jackson, Edwin Kelso, Marian Lysaght, James Murphy, Tony Sinnott, and Edward Thompson. Registrar: Mark Lysaght I hope the society as it is today appreciates all the time and hard work the first committee put into forming the I.C.S.S. I think the society has served us well, and I have made so mnay friends through the Charollais Sheep Society. I thank you all. Marian Lysaght (First President of the Irish Charollais Sheep Society)

This article was originally written for the 10th anniversary society yearbook in 2000, and was reprinted in 2011 for the 21st anniversary. It was written by Marian Lysaght who was President of the Society for over a decade. Marian owned the original A1 Coillcuill flock, and was involved with the breed from day one in Ireland and actively involved with the society. The flock was dispersed in 2000, Fergus died suddenly in 2002 and Marian died in 2005. They are survived by their son Mark who was the society registrar for many years, their daughters Damarius, Verify and the late Deborah.

Greek-style Lamb Kebabs Great summery flavours. Delicious cooked either on the barbecue or under the grill.

Serves 4 Cooking time: 15 mins Ingredients • 7 50g lamb fillet, well-trimmed and cubed • Olive oil • 1 red and 1 green pepper, cut into chunks • 1 red onion, cut into wedges • Salt and freshly ground black pepper Marinade • • • • •

250mls Greek-style natural yoghurt 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 teasp. ground cumin 1 teasp. ground coriander Juice of 1 lemon

Mint and Garlic Yoghurt Dressing • 1 85mls thick Greek-style natural yoghurt • 1 tablesp. fresh coriander, chopped • 1 tablesp. fresh mint, chopped • Grated rind of 1 lemon • 2 garlic cloves, crushed To serve • rice and green salad

Combine the marinade ingredients in a large non-metallic dish. Add the diced lamb and stir to coat well, then cover and place in the fridge for about 2 hours if possible. Meanwhile soak 8 wooden skewers in water. This will prevent them scorching. If you are short of time use metal skewers. Preheat your barbecue or grill to high and brush lightly with oil. Thread the lamb cubes, peppers and red onion onto the skewers, season and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until lightly charred and cooked to your taste. For the Mint and Garlic Yoghurt Dressing: Stir together all the ingredients and season to taste. Drizzle a little dressing over each lamb skewer and serve the rest on the side.

The Sheep Ireland €uroStars

What’s the objective? To provide pedigree and commercial farmers with more information to aid the selection of the best breeding to enter their flock

What are the €uroStars - The €uroStars are simply the way in which Sheep Ireland display genetic evaluations for performance recorded animals, ranging from 1 Star to 5 Star representing the range poor to excellent respectively. Why are genetic evaluations important? – Many farmers make decisions on animal breeding based on individual animal performance, for example only selecting ewe lambs or rams that were born as twins in a bid to try and increase the scanning rate of the flock through genetics. While genetics has a considerable role to play in a flock’s pregnancy scanning result, this selection method will not yield the flock considerable gains. The best methods to increase the genetic potential of a flock in this example are to use the genetic evaluations to select for number of lambs born or to introduce a more prolific breed. To make progress it is essential that we consider a broader range of information connected to that particular animal – how have her other siblings performed? How have her parents and their siblings performed? Until such time as this information is known it is not possible to make properly informed breeding decisions which will positively impact on flock output. This is why detailed and accurate performance recording is critical to delivering improvements to the Irish sheep industry.

Quality of genetic evaluations There is one very important piece of information that Sheep Ireland need all users of the €uroStar evaluations to know. There are ‘Good Quality’ genetic evaluations and ‘Bad Quality’ genetic evaluations. There are a number of critical ingredients that Sheep Ireland requires to deliver good quality genetic evaluations to Irish sheep farmers, all equally important: 1. Ancestry information for the breed in question – Having a depth of ancestry information is critical to linking up and tying together all the performance records that we have for each bloodline. Take the example highlighted earlier – without knowing the family tree of the animal in question; it is impossible to assess their performance. 2. Accurate ancestry information – With the best will in the world there are many practical difficulties associated with assigning accurate parentage to all lambs at birth. From mating time to lambing time there are many opportunities for accurate data capture to fall down, a ram break-in, mis-mothering in the lambing shed, genuine recording errors, etc, etc.

20 | IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2020 Accurate parentage verification can be helped greatly by DNA technologies and this will be one of the major benefits of genomics for the Irish sheep industry. 3. Lots of performance records – To build up an accurate picture of the genetic potential of a particular bloodline a large number of records are required. A high volume of performance records makes identifying the top and bottom performing bloodlines much easier. The more ram breeders that performance record their flock, the more data that is generated across all the various bloodlines, to the benefit of both the ram breeder and ram buyer.

Where can I find Performance Recorded Charollais Rams? Sheep Ireland launched an Online Ram Search in May 2013 which can be found at www.sheep.ie. This gives commercial and pedigree farmers the opportunity to search for performance recorded rams. Farmers have the ability to search by county, breed, or the Index they wish to purchase their ram on. Farmers can also use this to search to check out performance recorded rams that may already be in their flock. Farmers can also find the list of 2020 LambPlus breeders on the Sheep Ireland website. A large number of Charollais rams will also be present at the Sheep Ireland Elite €uroStar Multi Breed Ram Sale which takes place this year on Saturday 22nd August, in Tullamore Mart.

Are the €uro-Star Indexes working? The answer is yes. The data that is presented is all data that was collected on Central Progeny Test flocks, by Sheep Ireland Technicians. The data shows that 5-star animals are consistently

outperforming 1-star animals on all traits. 5-Star animals have almost 5% less lambing difficulty than their 1-Star counterparts, as well as being 2.6kg heavier at weaning, and having a lighter Ewe Mature weight. All these traits are combining to leave more money in farmers pockets.

What is happening in Sheep Ireland? LambPlus The performance recording programme for pedigree sheep breeders and commercial sheep farmers. Just over 720 flocks are involved in LambPlus for 2020, this marks the highest level of

IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2020 | 21 sheep performance recording ever seen in Ireland. LambPlus has a suite of new web screens for pedigree breeders to record flock data and to view performance reports. It also offers facilities such as an inbreeding checker, lambing report, Ram report, genomic ordering and results screens, and more. Reports Screens Over the past 12 months, Sheep Ireland have developed new Web screens which LambPlus breeders can access to make more informed breeding decisions for their flock. The weight report allows breeders to see how their stock are thriving from birth to the 40-day weight, to the 100-day weight and so on. This information could potentially highlight a group of lambs that may not be thriving as much as the breeder would like. The weight report can be filtered by Age, sex and date, making results easier to interpret for breeders.

22 | IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2020 The Health Report is another web screen that has been developed to assist breeders to make breeding decisions throughout the year. The health report will display all incidences of Lameness, mastitis and prolapse that has been recorded on the farm in the last year and will allow breeders to make culling decisions much easier. The health report will also display the average BCS and Dag Scores of animals in the flock if they are recorded.

The pedigree management screen has also been updated to show breeders a history of the pedigree registration they have made over the previous 4 years. They can see a count of males and females that were registered and whether they were registered as lambs or hoggets.

Powerful display by Ballyhibben at Charollais Premier Limerick breeders Michael and Alymer Power took both Overall Champion and Top Pen Average at this year’s Charollais Premier Sale.

Co Clare for €2,900. Securing a bid of €1,900 was David Argue for his Rockdale Tornado son which was secured by Eric Landen, Co Cork.

Father and son team Michael and Alymer Power had an exceptional result at the Irish Charollais Sheep Society’s Premier Show last July.

Ger and Paula O’Leary had a superb day selling 5 sons of Ballyhibben Trickster to an average of €1,710. H3119051 sold to Willie Gleeson for €2,400, H3119069 sold to Hanna Heffernan for €2,100 and H3119039 sold to Jim & Fram Jeffrey for €1,650.

The breeding duo from Askeaton, Co Limerick, took both the male and overall championship on the Friday night. Tasked with judging the event was Deborah Whitcher from the UK Galtres flock, who selected her Ballyhibben champion from the 80-strong class of ram lambs. This son of the £9,000 Sant Andras Sergeant Major was knocked down to Killian Traynor of the A46 Island pedigree flock for €2,800. This was only the start for the Power outfit who sold their next ram, another son of Sergeant Major, directly after the champion, for €2,300. This one was secured by Simon Brown from Co Kilkenny for €2,300. As the sale progressed, Sergant Major commanded prices €1,700 and €2,800 to the flocks of John Kearney and Richard Kenny respectively. These prices helped the Ballyhibben flock achieve the top pen average of €2,400. The second prize ram lamb was presented by Jim and Fran Jeffery from Cork who are no strangers to the highs of premier sale achievements. A stylish son of Edstaston Tempranillo, he was selected as reserve male champion. Securing the reserve champion in the ring at the top sale price of €3,400 was the Shanavagoon pedigree flock of James Walsh. This also helped to boost the brothers’ pen average to €2,370. Tom and Jim Murphy came up trumps again when yet another son of Carriganeela Cracker A919003 was knocked to Michael Mullins from

Frank Gibbons secured a January-born Boyo Thomas the Tank son from Stewart Thompson at €1,650. Peter Rooney’s smart lamb by Wedderburn Sunny Boy returned west of the Shannon as he found his new home with Sean and David Naughton from Co Galway at €1,300. Overall ram lambs sold for an average of €950 while hogget rams had an average of €500. The female classes began with the shearling ewe class. Here Frank Gibbons exhibited a classy gimmer sired by Ballinasloe Jubilee. The judge had no hesitation in awarding her first position, followed by female champion and went on to be judged the reserve overall champion. This powerhouse hit the market at €1,000. Finally, it was the turn of Peadar McGee with Lot 49 to stand at the top of the line in the ewe lamb class. As the judging continued into the evening this very smart lady accrued the title of reserve female champion and was knocked down at €1,020 the following day. Taking the top female price at the sale was Lot 15 from Jim and Tom Murphy which sold for €1,300. Taking home a price of €1,020 was a Januaryborn daughter of April Cottage Samson exhibited by Andrew Gilmore. Females sold to a healthy average of €714 for shearlings, while ewe lambs averaged €587.

IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2020 | 37 transformed into UPRA (National Unit for the Selection and Promotion of the Breed). The way to national competitions and official shows was then open to the Charollais Sheep, present at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris since 1972.In 1974 the breed was recognised by the Ministry of Agriculture.

History of Charollais Sheep At the end of the 18th century, the region stretching from the massifs of the Morvan to the Charollais valleys and the Bresse plain had a varied sheep population, known as the “Morvandelle”, whose main outlet was the supply of meat to Paris. With the development of the wool industry, the new objective of the breeders was to improve the quality of the wool, hence the importation of Merino wool, which was not, however, crossbred with these local populations. However, as early as 1820, the economic malaise in the wool industry again prompted the breeders to turn to meat production. Thus, the importation of Leicester breeding stock (commonly known as Dishley) developed and crossbreeding with the local flock made it possible to produce a more homogenous sheep. From that time on, the name ‘Mouton Charollais’ was already being mentioned on certain markets. At the beginning of the 20th century the Charollais sheep, also known as “Mouton de Pays”, made up the majority of the region’s livestock. After the First World War the arrival of the Southdown led to a serious reduction in the number of local sheep. But from the 1950s onwards, the search for heavier and less fatty carcasses gave the Mouton de Pays back its advantage. In 1962, some breeders decided to organize the first competition of the breed which took place in Palinges in Saône-et-Loire and the “Mouton de Pays” was definitively baptized the “MOUTON CHAROLLAIS”. The same year, these breeders opened the Herd Book of the breed. In 1973 the Association of Charolais Sheep Breeders was

In 2008, UPRA became an OS (Organisme de Sélection) Mouton Charollais following a reform initiated by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2006. Since the end of 2018, our selection body is regulated under the European Zootechnical Regulation (RZUE). This regulation opens up perspectives for intra-community work. Our selection program remains unchanged: improvement of the meat qualities (growth rate, conformation, carcass yield) and maternal qualities (prolificity, milk) while respecting the breed standard to which we attach great importance. The tools to implement this program are performance control, Individual Control Stations and insemination to spread the best rams faster. The Charollais Sheep is today the first breed in France used for crossbreeding. Today we have 110 members and about 10,000 ewes in the selection base. Our main events are the Concours Général Agricole in Paris (end of February), our national competition in Charolles (1st Thursday and Friday of August) and the Sommet de l’Elevage in Cournon (1st week of October). We are very honoured to have been asked to write these few lines about our breed that your association has been promoting for 30 years in the beautiful Irish countryside. Ireland is one of the most faithful countries in terms of animal exports, friendships have been created, it is always a pleasure to welcome you in France. In the future, we wish to strengthen these links as much as possible and to constitute why not a Franco-Irish cooperation always in the interest of improving our breed and promoting it throughout the world. We look forward to seeing you in 2022 for our 60th anniversary!

IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2020 | 39

Farmers Story We are farming 33 years in Windgap in south Kilkenny with sheep being the main enterprise, we have had every breed of ewe throughout this time and starting using Charollais rams from first memory 26 or 27 years ago.

In short very, very happy. If asked for a negative I would say similar to all breeds, breeders can sometimes lose commercial focus. Breeders needs to keeps their eyes on commercial farmer and what they want from the breed.

Their main attributes we find using Charollais rams is they can be used with any breed and their qualities from birth of being easy lamb, fast to suck and excellent to gain weight all shine through. We have lambed from 1200 ewes back to 700 ewes and this year 400 1st lambers where over that spell on average 80% of the rams have being Charollais. We have tried every breed which we still use from Dorset, Ille de France, Texel, Beltex, Suffolk, Rouge, Blue de Maine but the breed we are always going back to is Charollais.

Positives, lively at birth, great length, with superb confirmation and excellent kill out. All is in all proof that we bought another 12 Charollais ram lambs this year so very happy. Matt Enright Windgap Co. Kilkenny

IRISH CHAROLLAIS SHEEP SOCIETY 2020 | 61

Mexico Trip In March 2019, I as the then Chairman of the Society, was invited to judge the sheep classes at the Feria International Ganadera Queretaro show in Mexico in December 2019. Never before has an Irish person been asked to judge this show so it indeed was an honour for me to accept the invitation. Feria International Ganadera Queretaro show is the most prestigious sheep show that is held annually in Mexico. Typically it is a 5 day show which is held in conjunction with a big cultural festival which celebrates native Mexican traditions and culture. With the invitation I had to judge the following breed classes; Charollais, Texal and Suffolk. It was interesting to observe the slightly different characteristics of these breeds in comparison to what we are familiar with in Ireland. Over the course of the Show there was in total approximately 350 Charollais sheep, 150 Texel sheep and 200 Suffolk sheep to be judged with eight female classes and eight Male classes for each breed so the task was definitely a hectic one. At the end of judging each breed a female champion and the male champion are selected. Unlike Ireland these are not then judged against each other for an overall Champion but instead they all go into the Male and Female interbreed competitions. Elsewhere at the venue 400 Doper sheep were judged by a judge from South Africa, Boeta Homan. A Mexican judge was also on hand to

work through approximately a combination of 1200 native and American breeds. Being involved in judging the interbreed was one of the highlights of the show with the other two judges. Ultimately, testament to the breed it was the Charollais Female Champion that won the overall interbreed female title, and the Charollais male champion that won the Male interbreed championship of the show. Finally to end the judging tenure I also was also tasked with judging three young handlers classes. Always a tough class to select winners from so in this instance expert help from David Darker and the South African judge was called for. The quality overall across all the breeds was excellent and all exhibits were a credit to the breeders, the exhibitors and the event organisers. A lively time was held in the judges quarters to celebrate the relief to be at the end of our jobs which were considered by the natives present to be well done with consistent and fair results. On discussion with our co- ordinater it was no suprise to discover that most of the Charollais sheep in Mexico have been bred from embryos that were initially inported from France and the UK. Also we had to give a presentation to a large crowd of sheep farmers assembled on the benefits of using Charollais sheep in lamb production and also an outline of sheep farming in Ireland.

Speaking on Irish Sheep Farming Overall, we had a great time in Mexico and were so well looked after. It was an absolute privilege to get the opportunity to not alone attend, but judge this sheep spectacle at the other side of the world. During some free time sight seeing tours were organised to San Miguel de Allande which is an old style Mexican town that has retained its original buildings and structures unchanged for the last 300 years. The city of Querterano was also on the sight seeing itinerary and this was another treasure to experience. The people, the food and the odd Tequila were super at all stages throughout our stay. Overall, the Mexican people are very friendly and lovely to talk with and are it is very interesting to learn their natives culture and traditions. To summarise, Whilst we were brought to Mexico to judge sheep it was also

Important and significant to the organisers and visitors that we helped them to learn about sheep and sheep breeding in Ireland. It took three flights to get to Mexico flying initially Cork to Amsterdam, then on to Heuston Texas then the final leg to Mexico. My travel companion David Darker and I arrived 25 hours after our departure weary but high on anticipation and excitement at what was ahead. Coming home due to a calamity of mishaps, totally outside our control of course!!! we were late leaving Queretaro and therefore missed our flight from Texas which meant we had to stay an extra day!! Tullamore Hogget line-up While the normal sale brought the numbers, the production sale of Dymphna and Gerry Grogan’s Duiske flock stole the limelight, achieving the top price of €1,250. This top-selling very correct ewe, sold in-lamb to Ballyhibben Talisman, was the pick of Sarah and Michael O’Neill of the Bolinaspect flock in Co Wexford. Overall, the production sale witnessed a 100% clearance rate, with average price settling at €520. The normal portion of the sale, like many sheep sales, found a tougher trade. Prices averaged at €450, with a clearance rate of 50%. Topping trade here was the overall champion, a ewe lamb from the Curabane flock of Declan and Eoin O’Connor, Elphin, Co Roscommon. Tapped out by judge Albert Ferguson, the stylish ewe lamb was no stranger to the show ring, as she had won prizes at numerous shows this year. In the sale ring later in the day, she sold for €760 to Thomas Murphy, Cleriestown, Co Wexford. In the hogget ewe class, Tipperary breeders Edmond and Paul O’Gorman, Lisfuncheon flock, took the red ribbon for the second year in a row and went on to be reserve champion of the show. This hogget ewe by homebred sire Lisfuncheon Gus is in-lamb to Lisfuncheon Jack O’Patsy, son of three-time all-Ireland winning ewe Lisfuncheon Princess. She later sold for €560 to Michael Weston, Dunmore, Co Galway.
