Karen Lim steps out of her BMW in a posh red coat carrying her favourite bag. Her avuncular smile and straightforward talk warm the ambiance right on. Behind the graceful look is the charm of a charismatic leader of one of the world’s top brands in the automotive industry. Karen is the current President Director of BMW Group Indonesia, a role she assumed back in 2014. The conversation quickly shifts to gender play, a common issue in the automotive industry as the male-dominated world. After all, Bayerische Motoren Werke AG or popularly known as BMW is still about cars, despite the German brand’s elegant and luxury vibes. Karen remarks that it’s hard to ignore the facts that there are still companies which “associate masculine characteristics with success and achievement. These include assertiveness, aggressiveness and task-oriented leadership abilities.” Nevertheless, the determined business leader Karen has refused to be trapped in how companies often portray women as the nurturing yet nonexecutive, persona, and a no material for leaders. “A woman executive can also be assertive and task oriented, and can be nurturing when needed,” she asserts. A leader is a gender-neutral term, no matter what the industry may be. The term should be attributed to those managed to take each step, making each decision with great care. In some ways, it feels like driving a car through the traffic, she further explains. “I believe no one was born leader. Great leadership is not a gift because someone was born as a he, or she.” In her mind, a leader, regardless of the gender, is someone with key qualities

empowerment,
communicativeness, integrity, vision and passion. These qualities are gender blind and equal to both women and men. It’s a matter of approach. “It is important to know each of the team members. This way, I can assign the right task for each of them to support individual development. And of course in the large scale, it will be the development of the company itself,” she says of her personal approach. Karen climbed up the corporate ladder of BMW Group Asia from the position of an accountant at BMW Asia Pte. Ltd, Singapore in 1998. It took her 16 years, moving between positions within the group. Everything matches like puzzle pieces. Celebrating BMW’s 100th anniversary this year, this confident leader shares her pride of driving the car and the company, which has stayed strong in the premium brand line. Under the motto “THE NEXT 100 YEARS”, BMW plans to stay and innovate for another century. The futuristic vision starts with BMW Vision Next 100 model, a coupé-type sportiness with the dynamic elegance of a sedan – but rather than being an anonymous transport machine. The model is a highly customized vehicle that is perfectly tailored to suit the driver’s changing needs. Karen, who earned his degree from Queensland University of Technology, says that she always believes in BMW. “Driving a BMW always delivers the joy of driving pleasure, and the car will not let me down.” So does her company. “I admire the value and culture in BMW Group, especially that one of BMW Group’s beliefs, ’Diversity is the key’. We are all about respect, trust and fairness. BMW believes that diversity is not only about equality but it is also about good governance and good business,” she says. Diversity is also the key to innovation and in the eyes of Karen, it’s what motivated her to be a good listener. Listening to ideas, opinions, and perspectives creates more than just a bond, but also encouragement to share for the best of the future and the company. Karen looks up to dr. Helmut Panke, who was the Chairman of BMW AG. She describes him as “a leader who not only sees from above, but also sits together with the team members.” At the helm of BMW Group Indonesia, Karen is also very instrumental in leading her team, with workload that fills her daily agenda to the brim. However, when she returns home, she’s still the mother of her two teenage sons. Indeed, her family is what attributed to her success. Her husband has had a far-reaching influence for gender emancipation and is very supportive of her career. “Family support is what makes me believe that career and family can go hand in hand. My husband is my biggest supporter. He commutes between Singapore and Jakarta to spend time with me and the kids.” The city-state of Singapore is where Karen likes to engage in a culinary excitement with her family. The family would share a table and laughter at their favourite restaurants: Morton’s The Steakhouse at Mandarin Oriental and Mezza 9 at Grand Hyatt Singapore. Just like her fashion statement, simple, elegant and comfortable, Karen’s idea of women leadership encourages many to follow her steps. The world is evolving and “There will be a lot more women who successfully break the stereotypes. Don’t be afraid to show your true colour. Never be embarrassed by who you are, embrace yourself and make your qualities as fuel to power your way to become a successful leader.” So, nothing is impossible. Karen is looking forward to “seeing woman leaders in various industries who can express themselves freely and are unbounded by gender stereotype.”

Karl Lagerfeld commemorates nature with Chanel’s Spring-Summer 2016 Haute Couture Collection at Grand Palais on Tuesday, 26th of January 2015. This Beige themed assortment, where beige is the household’s emblematic pride of place showcased inverted volumes on short tweed jackets with oval sleeves, worn with long pencil skirts, or fitted jackets coupled with full skirts or flared culottes. “Gabrielle Chanel was the Queen of beige”, where “The starting point for this collection was the silhouette” states Karl Lagerfeld who applied a hefty beige palette of ecru, ivory, sand, dove, putty, taupe and mocha. The collection’s nightwear profile reveals strapless dresses or trousers with a train harmonized by painted capes with rhinestones, wide-cut boleros or embroidered jackets. Having taken up the reins at Hermès, the new designer Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski seems to have given what the fashion label’s customers expected in its Fall-Winter ready to wear collection She introduces a strong sequence in navy leather and suede, cut into a short A-line jacket, suede trousers, as well as an ineffably luxurious trenchcoat, following up with a nod to Hermès tradition in blue and white silk scarf-print. “You have to work with leather,” the 36-year-old designer says. Then, you can add the equestrian heritage and those iconic silk scarves. The collection boasts quilted leather in a dark burgundy referenced riding jackets, while red stripes woven into cashmere wrap coats subtly referenced horse blankets. Vanhee-Cybulski set her debut inside the Manège des Célestins horse arena of the La Garde Républicaine in Paris. Her first show with Hermès recalls how the fashion label got it started back in 1837, providing harnesses and bridles for the carriage trade. To her, Hermès means a Frenchwoman. “It’s about being elegant, but natural and discreet. Her closest brush with fashion—two long, plain, fluted dresses, one in red, the other ivory—really touched the shape of the moment. Indeed, leather has played an important role in this equestrian-inspired collection. Here, Vanhee-Cybulski worked in into a chick black and navy lambskin pairing on coats, jackets and two-tone striping on pants. An iconic carrés bandana print scarf was turned into a familiar silk top and matching skirt. There’s tone-on-tone shadow outline crafted out of silk jacquard; and there’re also the proverbial horse blanket coats. Other outerwear inspired by a quilted saddle pad had a bit more kick. The bulwarks and superstructure use a high- performance PVC core sandwich. The bulkheads are made using a sandwich of marine wood and expanded material. The keel deadrise is 12°at the stern.

If you look for a motorcycle that has a characteristic of down-to-earth yet also established convention then The New BMW R nineT Scrambler is the one for you. It is said that action heroes ride this motorcycle on the screen and scores of hobby racers entered mountain and beach races on them: the Scramblers. With deep- treaded tyres, a raised exhaust, somewhat extended spring travel and a relaxed seating position, Scramblers offered their riders in the 1950s to 1970s not just motorcycling fun on winding country roads but also great offroad capability and therefore an extended range of use. Like the motorcycles themselves, the people who rode Scramblers were not bound by established conventions. And they could be seen virtually everywhere: on winding country roads, stony mountain passes and - where it was allowed - even on sandy beaches. The history of BMW Motorrad is also rooted in the Scrambler concept. In 1951, the BMW R 68 was presented at the International Bicycle and Motorcycle Fair IFMA in Frankfurt with a typical raised 2-in-1 exhaust. While the standard version of the R 68 had a conventional exhaust installed in a lower position, the raised exhaust version was already available back then as a BMW Motorrad accessory. To this day, some owners of this highly valuable post-war BMW Motorrad classic still like to retrofit the special Scrambler-style exhaust.

The Rice Bowl Architecture Journey starts at the point of arrival, where guests cross a wooden bridge suspended high above the Sayan Valley in Bali’s central highlands, over a river that is part of the UNESCO-listed ‘subak’ sustainable irrigation system. Joe Frans Joy Ride
For Mr. Joe Frans, CEO of BMW Motorrad Indonesia, working in the automotive business was always a given as he was raised in an automotive family. It was natural for him to obtain knowledge and skill in automotive business from his family. For him, the most interesting thing in the automotive industry is the dynamic environment and progressive competition between the brands and products. These are the aspects that continue to excite him about the business. As a child growing up in Banjarmasin, he always saw the big cities as the land of opportunity. Raised as a third of four children, he has many fond memories of growing up in a small town. However, he dreamt of going out of town for his education and it was realised by his parents who sent him to Surabaya after he finished his elementary school. He was always interested in mathematics, drawing and computer which lead him to choose computer science major for his undergraduate degree in University of Indiana. In 2008, he moved to Jakarta in order to further expand his business. A self-proclaimed animal lover, he now lives with six dogs which to him are the most loyal companion one can have. When questioned about his personal favourite vehicle, his immediate answer is BMW Motorrad. He came to love BMW Motorrad since he rode the product and experienced it himself. Although some people might be intimidated by the look of big bikes, or they think it’s too big or not retro enough, Mr. Frans believes that we are living in a new era where big bikes have changed too. BMW Motorrad have motorcycle for every needs: Adventure, touring, roadster, urban mobility, sports and the most celebrated: the heritage model. They also provide riding equipments, jackets, riding shoes, shirts, and many kind of motorcycle accessories. The crowd favourite is the GS Model, made for adventure, touring on-road or off-road. It is a sturdy bike, agile, and a very good quality motorcycle. Mr. Frans was practically gushing, “I can sense the German Engineering in the handling, cornering or even when braking. Truly a piece of bike that everybody need to ride at least once in their lifetime.” The core principle of BMW Group brand is JOY. Mr. Frans said, “If you don’t feel the joy riding it, then don’t ..... just don’t. I came to be intoxicated with adventure bike through a GS. It is something that excites me in a way maybe only bikers would understand. The way the wind hit my face, the way we sit on the bike, the way we finished a corner, everything about riding a bike is all exciting. It is truly a different experience from driving car because when you ride a bike, that means you have direct sun, you could be trapped under the rain or you also get ‘masuk angin’. Yet we still ride on, and on. So to summarize, don’t expect no sweat full air conditioned seats when you ride a motorcycle, yet expect being cool.” Unlike other South East Asia market, our country implements very high luxury taxes for some specific goods, which means a significant hike in all the big bikes prices, automatically placing the items in category of ultra luxury segment. Hence the consumer appetite is to go for the highest model, best model and fullest option bikes. This means the bike can become a status symbol for the owner. According to Mr. Frans, our steadily growing GDP means it is only a matter of time before more Indonesian will be able to purchase and experience higher and better quality of products. He believes more educated people in the future will appreciate quality, rather than quantity.

Huang Binhong’s (1864 – 1955) “Secluded Studio in Verdant Mountains” is an 118.5 x 52.8 cm ink & color on paper hanging scroll. Mo Boji escaped the Second World War by fleeing to Hong Kong in 1941and later moved to Macau where he became acquainted with Huang Binhong and was gifted 3 pieces of art work. Painted in 1946, this painting is of Northern Song dynasty classical style of energetic ink strokes pressed against the paper with thick ink. Ju Lian’s (1828 – 1904) Blossoms is a 29.3 x 444.8 cm ink & color on silk handscroll painting depicting over 50 types of blooming flowers from across the 4 seasons. C.K.
