CLÉ DE PEAU BEAUTÉ Radiance Becomes You

Cle de Peau Beaute introduces the 2016 autumn/winter collection, the Seductive Beauty. Pure glamour wrapped in liquid radiance, the unforgettable impact of lusciously lacquered lips. This season, Cle de Peau Beaute draws inspiration from Tamara de Lempicka’s bold aesthetic, sensuous sophistication and expressive colour palette – impossibly delicate, yet as fearlessly seductive as the newfound liberation of this era. A daring mix of glamour and rebellion, it captivates high society with its risqué fashion. Art Deco motifs and boldly confident colours. It was tumultuous and flamboyant. An era of the Beautiful and the Damned. No one personified it more than the artist Tamara de Lempicka, a glamorous star who lived the aristocratic life of those she painted. Drawing you in, she captives everyone she meets. It’s the ultimate seduction: her confidence, fearless independence and natural beauty. She lures you in with a provocative smile and sensuous gaze. Be seduced by eyes accentuated with shimmering shades, creamy skin as soft as cashmere, and those lips – glamorously lacquered in liquid radiance.

Cle de Peau Beaute has a whole concept in minimalist and luxurious skincare and beauty products, consists of purifying formulation and breakthrough ingredients. It is a brand that focused on radiance and light – embodiment of the creator Lucia Pieroni’s signature look, which uses sheer, light-enhancing textures and colors that illuminate inner as well as outer beauty since 2006. First collection is the rouge liquid éclat, or radiant liquid rogue – gives elegantly seductive lips in luscious liquid radiance. Imbued with deep, lavish colour that seems to melt into lips, this liquid rogue is moisture-rich for a translucent self-activating luster. Luxuriate in greater dimension and a dewy texture for a seductive, long lasting finish. Ranging from collection number eleven to eighteen, the collection includes Lingerie, a nearly pink that whispers like a delicate lace, Chenille, the luxuriously sensuous that seduces with a sexy allure, Flushed, like a tender caress blushes with pure rapture, Sequin, simply dazzling and sparkles with dancing radiance, Fast Lane, intensely modern, legal red that gets lively and spirited, Deco, stylishly beautiful and has a beautifully classic elan, Bugatti Red, a shade that races forward, more luscious than a bold kiss, and finally Lempicka Red, as sexy as the season, seduces like a femme fatale.

Another collection is the ombres couleur squadri or the eye color quad – gradient eye shadow for a seductive gaze. Layers of light-dancing radiance in a spectrum of captivating colors create breathtaking depth and drama. New shades of the season give eyes a mysterious, redefined look and seductive allure. This latest season collection includes eye shadow layers number 315 and 316, the Modern Era, a spectrum of deep rich greens with an accent of smoky silver to create a sultry look, and the Golden Age, a medley of warm sun ripped peach and earthy brown hues that create layers of captivating colour. The ombre crème solo or cream eye color solo, with a pure focus on intense colour, each shade devilers delicate radiance that syats as true on your eyes as it does in the package. The silky smooth texture changes from creamy to powdery when applied. This season two colours are being introduced to help create the seduction, the number 306 Blue Notes, a deep steely gray that imparts a metallic shine and the number 307 Smoky Stream, a smoky near black smolders with intensity.

Finally, the must have beauty product of the season, the réhausseur d’éclat or the luminizing face enhancer – illuminate your complexion with a dramatic veil of light. Energized by optical technology with light directing radiance, skin has never looked more luminous. Apply as the finishing touch to animate features and spark your beauty. This new mélange of colour captures the season’s allure. Ranging from number eleven, hues of purple, blue and nude, number fourteen, a tone of beige and slight rose pink, number fifteen, hues of peach and nude, and number sixteen, the almond, a nuanced colour combination of cream, sandy beige, soft pink and gold pearls for a tantalizingly warm glow that seems to come from within. Quoted are the words from Lucia Pieroni, the creator of Cle

de Peau Beaute: For the Autumn/Winter 2016 Collection, I was inspired by the rich colors and textures of renowned painter Tamara de Lempicka, who freely lived the tumultuous era of the Roaring Twenties. De Lempicka’s approach to beauty was characterized by a unique collaboration between artists of the avant-garde and fashion designers. She often depicted strong, powerful, yet beautiful and seductive women. When such a woman walks into the room, eyes follow her every move. She is ambivalent by nature and unafraid to explore the unknown. As a woman of impeccable taste, she enjoys the finer things in life. With lips voluptuously painted in radiant liquid rouge, her mouth glamorously stands out against her creamy cashmere complexion.

11/10/16 11:10 AM

On a Saturday afternoon, Puri Hadiprana appears energetic and upbeat as she greets Registry and the team with friendly smile. “I’m flexible, whether you want to do the interview first or photo shoot,” she says charmingly. We decided to do the photo shoot first. Puri proved to be easy going and friendly to work with. She was really quick in getting everything during the photo shoot. Puri, the younger daughter of renowned art collector Hendra Hadiprana, is carrying the legacy of her father. She leads the Hadiprana Gallery at Kemang, the first art gallery in Jakarta that was established by her father in 1962. The entire gallery boasts various types of artworks and it has won the support of numerous artists and art communities. Over a tea time chat at the gallery’s eatery, Kedai Mitra, Puri puts us in a jovial mood with her inspiring stories. “My family is very passionate about art. I grew up with art objects surrounding my life. My father always teaches us how to develop characters through art. For us, we live in art with a purpose to bless others.” Inheriting the spirit of her father, Puri established Hadiprana Art Centre in 1998. Later, under her leadership, she expanded the business to Hadiprana Jewellery, Hadiprana Signature and Kedai Mitra, as well as having the partnership with a number of business tenants. “Hadiprana Art Centre first opened its doors at the time of Asian financial crisis. We started with only a handful of students. The objective was not the business at all. We wanted to bring the healing power of art to these children and their mothers after the riots,” Puri recalls. Flash-forward, the centre now has over 300 students, ranging from four-year-old children to teenagers. It offers classes on a weekly basis. The small number of students per class allows every teacher to be attentive to each student’s needs. “We are here to foster the creativity of students. Not only do these students develop their skills in drawing, but the most important of all, they are here to build their characters through art activities. We teach students the values of obedience, discipline and perseverance as the keys to achieving their goals, which are often mirrored in their finished artworks. That’s also the reason why we opened a new class, called ‘portfolio’, last two years. The class nurtures students to keep their portfolios to reflect their works. A well-developed portfolio can help a student gain acceptance into a prestigious art school overseas,” explains Puri, who is the centre’s curriculum concept creator. She adds that art is not logic. It’s a means of exploring creativity and self-expression. “In reality, the colour of sun is yellow, but art allows you to translate your own imagination. The sun can be in any colour; it can be red or blue perhaps. Fish can fly in the sky as birds. Unlike math where 1+1 is definitely 2, in art it can be any number,” she further explains. To make the most of the learning programs, she says that teachers at Hadiprana Art Centre let students work independently in the class. However, as she continues, the teacher should know how the students would relate their imagination and creative thinking into making characters on their artwork theme, from idea to drawing one particular object. Combining her creative vision and business savvy, Puri has capitalised on her love for art in running the entire Hadiprana Gallery and its businesses. A degree holder in architecture from Tarumanagara University, she is also taking the role of overseeing her family-owned luxury hotel, the Chedi Club Tanah Gajahin Ubud, Bali. Yet, despite all the fortunes, Puri doesn’t see monetary gain as

an ultimate destination in life. Believing in the value of sharing, she engages in social work by means of organising education focused on character building for children of poor families in the slums of Pademangan in North Jakarta. The social work is organised by Kemah Kasih, a foundation she established in 2004. “We put aside some of the profit from the gallery for the foundation. We currently educate as many as 120 children from 70 poor families with the emphasis of building their characters. I was called to do this social work because I believe in the power of sharing. Through education, we want to instil in these children the importance of being discipline, honest, responsible and perseverant. I always tell them that having a good character is like having a solid cup with no hole inside. It’s a strong foundation where they can put anything useful for their future development,” Puri asserts. She adds that the education program also goes to their parents. “We educate them so they can support the program. The need to be aware of the importance of how good characters can benefit their children.” Despite focusing on the character building, the program also includes math, English and dancing lessons. “We have also conducted joint activities with the Rotary Club Metropolitan Jakarta, such as fundraising for free medical check-up and distributing free eye-glasses,” says Puri who is currently an honorary member of the Rotary Club Metropolitan Jakarta. Life is not all about work, as Puri believes that spending quality time with family is of great importance. Her weekend is always wrapped with the togetherness with her parents and family, yet is in the absence of her only child, the 20-year-old Sekaraya who is currently in pursuit of her interior design degree at Savannah College Art Design in the US. “Our weekend activities are mainly going to the movie or dining out,” Puri says adding, “I personally like movies directed by Nia Dinata and Mira Lesmana. For the Hollywood blockbusters, Mission Impossible from the first and the third they all are great. And I’m planning to watch Jack Reicher: Never Go Back tomorrow on Sunday.” As for the food, Puri puts Indonesian food on the top list of her favourite cuisines. “Nasi goreng is my most favourite, followed by siomay, gado-gado and chicken satay. I’m also into Japanese, Thai and Western fares.” The chat continues with more light talk. This time is about fashion. After taking a sip of her tea, she gestures in excitement. “I love my sister’s eponymous label, Mira Hadiprana. I love it because it’s so classic Indonesian and she always keeps up with the trend with her new motifs. Next is Baron for its intricate quality of weaving. Putri Pare is something else, as the brand boasts high quality of classic kebaya.” Travel is something that she takes it as an art of living. “Bali and Yogyakarta are the two places I treasure the most, as I know many painters with amazing artworks, some of which are displayed in the Hadiprana Gallery. As for the overseas destinations, I like Bangkok for its cultural sites, the food, and the hotel. We always stay at ShangriLa Hotel Bangkok, as it boasts great hospitality with an outstanding personal touch. San Francisco is also on my list for its beautiful buildings and landscapes.” There are many wonderful things that life has to offer, she says concluding the afternoon chat. “Life is just like art, and God is the great artist behind this beautiful life. He has created a special purpose for each one of us, so we can be a blessing to others and have a grateful heart.”

BVLGARI

Serpenti Seduction Jewellery

In a tribute to its spirit animal, Bulgari introduces the new Serpenti jewellery collection, of a new design that ensnares the bold nature of the snake. Entirely reimagined into striking new shapes, Serpenti focuses on the power of the eyes in 2016. Shining in multi-faceted expressions of seduction, the precious rings, bracelets and necklaces glorify the “hearts of the head” in jeweled designs that sparkle with desire. Indeed, the gemstone is uncannily similar to the eye: every jewel is as individual as every iris. Such inimitability implies a captivating appeal, as the hypnotic, almond-shaped eyes of a snake – or those of a beautiful woman – can hold a power as incomparable as it can be unconquerable. At the centerpiece of Serpenti design is the precious snakehead, inspired by the 1960s-70s Bulgari serpents that heralded this dangerous yet hypnotic element of the animal. Further adopted from the same era, when design distinction was king, is Serpenti’s use of the hexagonal scale pattern, a sort of modernized leitmotif. The design is flexible and adaptable, wearable from day to night. This idea of modular jewellery was first invented by Bulgari and quickly became a hallmark of the Roman jeweller’s style. Since, modular jewellery has become an accessory staple to the stylish modern woman for its versatility, contemporary appeal and bold elegance.

Jewellery Bvlgari Serpenti Oct 2016.indd 28

11/8/16 10:58 AM

At this time, Serpenti was more stylised, the snake was less of an animal and more of a jewel. The bracelet-watch became a fixture piece in high society, the precious marking of a seductress, who kept the time to herself. Legends herald the hypnotic capacities of the serpent’s eyes: it appears they can almost transfix prey before a strike. Gaze unmoving, glides closer while its target is seemingly paralysed with awe. Much comparison has been made of this same hypnotic power belonging to a woman – she sees what she wants, she tells him with her eyes, and then he becomes hers. For decades, Bulgari’s Serpenti has ingeniously employed tubogas for its linked body, the sleek technique coupling exquisite goldsmith with the suppleness of the collection. Modern day Serpenti has coiled itself into countless renditions, so every woman may find her personalized spirit animal within an exquisite jewellery collection. Encircling tubogas of leitmotif techniques, coiling various levels of preciousness, or entwining goldsmith with gemstone design, no Bulgari snake is like another, rendering it into a veritable icon of distinction. Scaled with Bulgari glamour, Serpenti will continue to live eternal, the emblem of seduction.

LA NATURE DE CHAUMET An Alliance of Wildness and Refinement

Slender stems carrying flowers, ethereal leaves curled around fruit, wild grasses harbouring insects, golden harvests in summer splendor – the essence of Chaumet’s nature. Mastering its expertise to create enchantment, Chaumet has invented precious jewels that represent Parisian High Jewellery since 1780. La Nature de Chaumet collection reinterprets the Maison’s founding sources of inspiration, expressing the identity of Chaumet while revealing its vision of nature. Four themes are the new chapters that tell the story; the laurel, the ear of wheat, the oak and the lily – all attributes of the gods is classical mythology and interpreted by the Maison since its origins. Chaumet’s naturalism is characterized by the choice of plants and flowers that carry significant symbolic power, sometimes tied with a ribbon. The four themes are alternatively ultra-figurative or stylized, adorning jewels that are sometimes opulent or sometimes simple, always with volume, movement and height. Nature interpreted by Chaumet teems with life, it is an ode to the eternal cycle of plants, foliage and berries, from bud to bloom. Le Laurier de Chaumet, or the laurel, is an emblem of victory of an ode to Apollo, the evergreen laurel also celebrates immortality. Combining the celestial blue of Burmese sapphires with the opalescent blue of sculpted moonstone, while metamorphoses de Daphne are set with pink spinels of varying hues and some black rhodium accent.

L’Epi de Ble de Chaumet, or the ear of wheat, symbolizes life, the earth’s bounty and the golden days of harvest, nourishment and representation of maternal love. The wheat sheaves represented by the nine pieces of the Offrandesd’ete set seem freshly picked from the fields, highlighted by diamonds. Champs de lumiere, the open-worked wheat motifs lit-up by the orangey pink of Padparadsca sapphires. Le Chene de Chaumet, or the oak, is a sacred tree, the emblem of Zeus. Racines celeste expresses vibrant femininity, offering an enchanting colour combination of rosy pearls, violet sapphires, pink and mauve spinels offset by scintillating diamonds, whilst Promesse de L’aube revel in the bright hues of pink, Paraiba and indicolite tourmalines, spesasrtites and mandarin garnets and pink sapphires. Le Lys de Chaumet, or the lily, holds a special place in the Maison Chaumet. Passion incarnate gives the hues of incandescent red spinels and rhodolite garnets contrast with the crisp tones of mint green tourmalines. Etoilesboreales enchant the fire of cabochon-cut black opals with the lights of the Paraiba tourmalines and yellow and violet sapphires.

DB315a Brooch

The Edward Chiu brand originates with Edward Chiu, a jeweller regarded for his ability to combine traditional materials and innovative design to create the unique look that characterizes every Edward Chiu piece. When he attended the Parsons School of Design in New York, he recognized the artistic potential inherent in fine jewellery then decided to continue the family tradition with the establishment of his first store, La Creation Jewellery Ltd in 1993. Edward’s creation were in many ways reflective of his origins in Hong Kong – a blend of East and West, refined old-world craftsmanship and contemporary sophistication. Often described as a modern interpretation of the art deco movement, his creations are one-of-a-kind masterpieces

32

featuring motifs such as birds and butterflies. In 2004/2005, Edward Chiu was chosen as Designer/Artist of the Future for the international exhibition, Awakening: La France Mandarine, The French Influence on Chinese Art, which was held in various cities in China and Paris. The latest collection of Edward Chiu is the Lady Lavender. Using Purple Jade, which is a form of Jadeite with colours ranging from pale lavender/lilac to mid purple. The frequency of Purple Jade is connected to the Earth star, third eye and crown chakras. It opens the third eye and crown chakras allowing one to connect to higher Beings to gain spiritual knowledge and then ground and link this energy to that of Mother Earth via the Earth star chakra. Purple Jade helps one dispel negative energies or thought forms from one’s energy fields and thus allows one to be spontaneous and have a joyful outlook on life and to “go with the flow”. The energy of Purple Jade is one of discernment. This helps

one to perceive and understand information, thoughts, feelings, situations or teachings that are in alignment with one’s own truths. Purple Jade also aids one to be “open-minded” and nonjudgemental about that which does not “feel” right at any given time, but, does not allow one to completely reject such thoughts and feelings. With all the metaphors, the purple jade are set into bangles, earrings and brooches in floral shapes. Materials include lavender jade, black jade, ruby, diamonds and 18k white gold setting.

ROLEX

Oyster Perpetual Lady-Datejust 28

Rolex introduces the new generation of its Oyster Perpetual LadyDatejust in either yellow or Everose Rolesor versions, a combination of 904L steel and either 18 ct yellow or Everose gold. These new models feature a redesigned case enlarged to 28 mm and a mechanical movement, calibre 2236, equipped with a Rolex-patented Syloxi hairspring in silicon. The first women’s version of this date chronometer, the Lady-Datejust, appeared in the late 1950s, bringing the heritage of timeless elegance and functionality in a smaller size perfectly suited to a lady’s wrist. The new Lady-Datejust 28 carries the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015, which ensures singular performance on the wrist. Rolesor, the combination of gold and steel on a Rolex watch, has been a signature feature of the brand since 1933, when the name was registered. It is an auspicious meeting of two metals: one, noble and precious, attractive for its lustre and stability; the other, highly resistant, known for its strength and reliability. All of these qualities perfectly mirror the elegance and performance that come together in a Rolex watch. The Rolesor concept is simple: the bezel, the winding crown, as well as the centre bracelet links are made of 18 ct yellow or Everose (Rolex’s exclusive patented pink gold alloy) gold; the middle case and the outer bracelet links are made of 904L steel. Introduced

on the Datejust in 1948, Rolesor contributed largely to the legendary status of this wristwatch. The new Rolesor Lady-Datejust 28 is available on an Oyster or Jubilee bracelet with a redesigned profile. The Oyster case of the Lady-Datejust 28, guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet), is a paragon of robustness, proportion and elegance. The characteristically shaped middle case is crafted from a solid block of 904L steel. The fluted case back is hermetically screwed down with a special tool that allows only Rolex watchmakers to access the movement. Fitted with the Twinlock double waterproofness system, the winding crown screws down securely against the case. The crystal, with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock for easy reading of the date, is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire. The waterproof Oyster case provides optimum protection for the Lady-Datejust 28’s high-precision movement. The Lady-Datejust 28 is also equipped with calibre 2236, a newgeneration self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. The precision of a Rolex Superlative Chronometer after casing is of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day, or more than twice that required of an official chronometer.

RICHARD MILLE Work of Art to the Wrist

The RM 68-01 is the outcome of Richard Mille’s approach on contemporary art within haute horlogerie in an unprecedented manner. This tourbillon calibre is more than a watch – it serves as a canvas for the inspiration and creativity of street artist Cyril Kongo, exclusively limited to 30 pieces worldwide. Never before has a work of art thus taken shape on the bridges and baseplate of a watch, becoming a truly integral part of the timepiece. Richard Mille and Cyril Kongo essentially associate art with large-scale urban mural and translating it for the horological world of micromechanics and precision, thereby making a leap from city walks to bridges, baseplates and sapphire dials of watchmaking. Known internationally under the pseudonym Cyril Kongo, the graffiti artist Cyril Phan was born in 1969 and presently resides in Paris. A self-made man and artist, he launched himself to the top of the French artistic and cultural world as well as Europe and beyond within a space of a just a decade. All his work originates and revolves around graffiti. ‘It was my school for painting, I learned in the street. I need to remain in touch with that world while at the same time looking at what’s happening elsewhere. Graffiti is a language with its own codes, a form of writing, whether this be on a gigantic wall, on canvas, or any other surface. I am not a painter bound to a single space, nor to any particular surface.’His mastery of the discipline and his over twenty years of membership in the MAC CREW collective have established him as one of the legendary, major representatives of the world’s graffiti scene. Over the course of time, he has developed and expanded his artistic vision and approach cumulating in a fully articulate artistic maturity not defined merely by graffiti. Inspired by frescos and wall paintings, he has, in essence, transformed graffiti as a genre.

It took more than a year to develop the painting technique used by Kongo. A special airbrush was developed to allow the artist to spray his colours with the utmost delicacy, one droplet at a time. To avoid jeopardizing the calibre’s equilibrium, essential to its functioning, the weight of the paint had to be strictly determined beforehand.

This significant challenge involving all the teams collaborating on the RM 68-01 project resulted in the creation of a unique palette of brightly coloured indelible paints that adhere perfectly to the titanium components and be able to endure assembly and dismantling. Kongo: ‘It took the development of special tools, and over a year

of experimentation for me to be capable of painting on a watch some five centimetres (two inches) square. Certain pieces were barely a few millimetres long, some even smaller, and I had to put the lettering directly on them, enough for visual effect but without using much paint so as to avoid throwing off the balance of the movement. It’s as though, starting from a complete automobile, I had to paint the chassis, the engine, each piston etc.’ Kongo rethought his approach to graffiti for the RM 68-01 project to harmonize his artistic vocabulary and the extremely limited surface of a calibre. His real triumph lies how he makes it possible

46

to contemplate his work from every aspect of the piece, where lines are barely visible to the naked eye and motifs are sketched using especially fine nibs pens. A nearly impossible task; yet done beautifully by the hands of the one known as Mr. Colourful. ‘He has pushed back the furthest boundaries of horological technique. This is exactly what [Richard Mille] wanted, to bring Kongo into a watch. He wasn’t content simply to apply paint to here and there. Cyril Kongo made it his own, from the movement to the tourbillon, by way of the case and dial’ as Mille described. On the back of the watch, the central form of the tourbillon

movement’s baseplate radiating outwards like a splash of paint physically thrown against a wall, while from the front the different movement bridges arcing in different directions like the wild brushstrokes found in street art murals. Housed within a case comprising an NTPT Carbon caseband with black ceramic

bezels, the asymmetric case design tapers in two directions-in thickness from 9 to 3 o’clock and in height between 12 and 6 o’clock. The limited edition RM 68-01 combines contemporary mechanical and visual arts in a truly exceptional expression of 21st century timekeeping.

HAUTLENCE

Beauty and Technical Excellence of Vortex Primary

Contemporary watchmaker Hautlence strengthens its partnership with its dynamic ambassador, ex-footballer Eric Cantona, with the launch of a new multi-coloured and three-dimensional Vortex Primary. Unveiled on the first day of the prestigious Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH – Carré des Horlogers), the Vortex Primary combines Cantona’s strong passion for art with Hautlence’s unique reinterpretation of time, resulting in a timepiece that is sculptured like a mechanical piece of art. Inspired by post-modern architecture and deconstructivism, the three-dimensional case of the Vortex Primary showcases facetted structures embellished with coloured glass that allow a view of the complex movement from all sides. Recalling the splendour of stained glass windows, this state-of-the-art case is crafted out of black PVD-coated grade 5 titanium and highlights a total of 19 different coloured glass panels, creating an eye-catching mosaic of shades. Hautlence and Cantona chose a mix of materials in primary colours to create this vibrant design, which includes five transparent sapphire crystals, two semi-transparent sapphire crystals, four red ruby glass panels, five blue spinel glass panels and three yellow corundum glass panels. These windows reveal parts of the impressive movement from all sides of the case and let light through to focus on the mechanism. Besides its creative design, the case also weighs a remarkable 48 grams, making the timepiece both attractive and comfortable to wear.

The Vortex Primary stands out from the rest of the collection thanks to its lack of a dial. The retrograde minutes are placed directly on the sapphire crystal of the case, with the half-trailing hours indicated through Hautlence’s signature jumping hour chain system that advances as time passes by. A power reserve indicator is portrayed in red at three o’ clock, while the movement’s regulating organ is on full display at six o’ clock as it rotates 60 degrees every 60 minutes. The Vortex Primary is available with six different interchangeable

straps with a screwdriver that is included in the box. The straps come in a choice of black Louisiana alligator leather or five different coloured rubber straps, each fitted with a folding clasp in grade 2 titanium with a satin-finish steel plate. Limited to 18 exclusive pieces, the Vortex Primary combines Cantona’s powerful artistic eye with Hautlence’s daring vision and boundless creativity. More than simply a wristwatch, The Vortex Primary is a true chef d’oeuvre — one that pushes horological boundaries while respecting watchmaking traditions.

reveals the Boheme design, such as leaf-shaped hands, floral Arabic numerals, minute scales with raised red gold-plated dots and internal hour rings, that all attest to the attention to detail that goes into the creation of each Boheme timepiece. Montblanc has fitted new Boheme timepieces with an interchangeable strap mechanism, from a black alligator strap to a stylish coloured calfskin wristband – ranging from Cappuccino, Orange Apricot, Coquelicot, Bleu des iles or Turquoise. The ExoTourbillon automatic calibre MB M29.24 incorporates

a brand new micro-rotor and allows an uninterrupted view on the movement through a sapphire crystal case back, in comparison to a standard rotor that always hides half of the movement. The whole construction measures a mere 4.5 mm in height, a feat in itself for a calibre of this complexity. The attention to detail continues on the Montblanc Boheme ExoTourbillon Slim dial, which is made of a silvery-white mother-of-pearl with a refined guilloche pattern. The centre of the dial and the bezel has been paved with Top-Wesselton diamonds for an elegant and feminine touch.

GIVENCHY

Egyptian Psychedelic Culture Riccardo Tisci marked his tenth year in Givenchy house coming to Paris showing his Autumn/Winter 2016 Collection full of boldness, roughness and urban energy in continuing Hubert de Givenchy’s legacy with his own creative identity. Since his becoming the creative helm of Givenchy in 2005, Tisci has attracts evergrowing followers who will never get enough of his culturally loaded works. The set was more complicated than ever before, a wooden maze – a labyrinth of wood, some might say – it looked like a representation of the inside of pyramids. Karen Elson, a model that went amongst other guests uttered jokingly that she would get lost if she walked for the show. An indeed interesting presentation where everyone got front seat view – for just a split second before the clothes brought off round a corner at other intersection. Such tricky choreography, models must walk in the right direction, slow enough to be seen by everyone, but fast enough to harmonize with the circulation – in other words: blink and you might miss the show. A-line celebs attended the show include Kris Jenner, Kanye West, Bradley Cooper, Wendi Deng, Murdoch, Lara Stone, Ciara and Chris Brown whilst models such as Liya Kabede, Mariacarla Boscono, Erykah Badu and Angel Haze walked the show. Lea T., a transgender model that walked for Givenchy for the first time caused a bit of media hype – proving the point of Tisci’s capacity on breaking the boundaries.

11/8/16 10:52 AM

His mix and match skill came into play this seasons, infusing street wear and gender bending aesthetics with high quality tailoring and techniques. The Autumn/Winter 2016 Collection was inspired by ancient Egyptian and mystical symbols, and featured a touch of flamenco with a decidedly urban attitude – thus the pyramid maze that narrowed the attendees’ vision. Tisci tapped concepts from the pop world and psychedelic music to Egyptian culture that somehow put together to not become a hot mess but instead a joy for the eyes. Mandala decorated blouses and dresses, Eye of Horus print, and many other Egyptian iconographies made an appearance in this collection. From leopard spots and python skin to contemporary metallic leather jackets. Tisci paired coats and jackets with no trousers – instead, a pair of shorts and knee boots. He proved his point that there is no such this as rules, only familiarity that could be pushed through – stylishly.

LOUIS VUITTON Ready to Wear

What becomes stylistic heritage? It’s fascinating to travel back through the pantheon of one’s sartorial history. A personal taste for certain pieces, an attraction for one kind of look over another, and the very way a wardrobe is composed are the result of a sum of experiences, memories, sensations and iconic images that are stored away in the sanctuary of the spirit. For this Autumn-Winter 2016 collection, Nicolas Ghesquière accomplishes a captivating adventure through both time and the heart of the Maison Louis Vuitton, unearthing the glorious vestiges of a visionary trunk-maker and recasting yesterday’s creations for today’s tastes. He defines a heroine who is always on the move, whose elegance springs from her dynamism. He forges heritage to better illustrate the present, in clothing that combines irrefutable classicism with the athletic vitality of a true explorer.

Accessories are equally as thoughtful, a leopard print bag with both short and long straps, paired with an oversized buttoned dress of black-and-white and red suede. They say that culture is what remains when all else has been forgotten. The same goes for fashion culture. This autumnwinter collection moves through time, dissolving the borders of memory. It’s a wardrobe that affectionately revisits the past, invents a confident present and defines a fluid mutable future. Another dress white based with the chain pattern, with a red, navy blue and gold colour tones. Elegantly paired with long black gloves. The artist Justin Morin created the show’s colonnade. Composed of fifty-seven columns, it is inspired by his work “Melted Bones” (2011), a sculpture in concrete and shattered mirrors.

MIU MIU

Luxuriously Eccentric Aristocracy Miu Miu FW16 revolves around the theme of falling decadence and eccentric aristocracy. While maintaining and upholding her splendour appearance, Miuccia Prada introduces the Miu Miu girl with the aristocratic background, restyles her wardrobe by ingeniously pairing less expensive materials such denim and popeline, or Shetland wool instead of cashmere, with pieces that she can “recycle” from what she already owns, such as brocade taken from tapesty. Her cotton wax workmen parka and hunting uniforms are enriched with the less fashionable but most aristocratic fur, the fox. Embroidery this season takes inspiration from 40’s brooches, while men-military coats are embellished with nametags patches of imaginary lovers. The denim patch group, with velvet and poplin, have military-inspired details including very large pockets and large cuffs on the sleeves in white poplin. This fabric, used for the dresses and shorts, goes from white to shirt checks to become embroidered, creating a pattern with bouquets of flowers. The common denominators of this group are the belts covered with wool and the embroidered white collars. Gobelins tapestry is introduced in its darkest variants. The outerwear inspired by riding jackets, present more bourgeois cuts compared to the military ones of the opening looks. The denim pieces have velvet brocade cuffs. Constant in the looks in this group is the presence of a long skirt, which appears in all the looks.

A classic fabric of military outerwear. The look that opens this group is made up of trousers and jacket of riding inspiration, with a velvet belt. Shirts are made of jacquard moiré taffeta and Shetland wool twinsets are included. The fabrics include velvet tapestry for the blousons and velvet brocade for the skirts. Red fox cuffs and the fur are reappearing. Red fox, with inlays of Spitz beaver is the element that characterizes this group. The washed cotton jackets, created in “Barbour” style, are two-coloured and have a wool cloth collar. As far as the knitwear is concerned, classic cashmere, fineness 5, is inserted into this group. In

this sequence rebrodé Chantilly lace also makes its debut: we find it in the chemise dress. The tweed and Shetland knitwear presents large collars with crocheted edges, made visible by being milk-white, contrasting with the pastel colour of the sweaters. Another group consists of moiré taffeta rose dresses, followed by black velvet dresses with taffeta ruching and silver fox cuffs. In gobelins and velvet brocade group, all are enhance by jewel brooches. The linings, visible in the sleeves, are in pink moiré jacquard or men’s pinstriped fabric.

AIGNER

The Icy Wild

Aigner uses its hometown in the heart of Munich, with the alpine region and untouched nature as the next inspiration for its Autumn/ Winter 2016/2017. The colours and materials of the prestine mountains, the forests, lakes and icy landscapes, were all mixed up and aesthetically combined to create the “Epic Heights”, this season’s theme of the House of Aigner. Leather, knits and fur take centre stage in combination of fabric. Creative Director Christian Beck uses the colour range of the wild side of nature and the ruggedness of the mountains. Its icy tones are used in colour blocking, as well as the green of the forest which has its own range of tones from forest green to moss green. The stage was filled with feather grey, meeting natural shades; angora beige, warm cinnamon, rosewood. Cheerful accents can be seen: clover flower pink, scarlet red and bellflower blue. Aigner Leather Collection Autumn/ Winter 2016-2017 chose a few highlight styles for this season. Its signature bag is available in the four basic colours: black, burgundy, marine and taupe, as well is in the colours of this season’s collection: feather grey, forest green and rosewood. The Cybill bag will have six models, each

with different design. Along with Cybill, Carla has a clean and luxurious appearance as its design became reduced and more modern. Aigner also has a luxury version made of Orylag fur for this line. A particular highlight of the season wins over the audience with their modern cut, the diagonal zip, the bag’s box-like shape and the modern look of the soft pouch. Chris comes in standard versions, made of leather bonded onto teather, resulting in a honeycomb-like structure. Another line of Aigner this season shows another clean design of Rosie. The new bag just made its debut for Aigner Leather Autumn/ Winter Season 2016/ 2017 in three versions: cross-over bag, city bag and shopper. Sefora comes in classic style. The material used is grain leather in black, cinnamon, scarlet red and burgundy. The special edition of the Sefora line is the pony-fur version. La Perla launches its fall winter 2016/2017 collection, a set of line which glimpse lingers long after. The touch that heightens the senses, the moments of intimacy meant to be savoured. This season, the body becomes a canvas for an exploration of sensuality – from elegant lace to fiercely architectural angles, natural beauty to polished sophistication, to femininity that takes on fresh new forms. A collection that represents modernity, ageless beauty and undeniable desire. La Perla is an international fashion line originated from Italy. In 1954 Ada Masotti, an Italian woman full of talent and courage began the journey towards her dream: creating an atelier of corsetry in the name of the best Italian tradition. Beginning in a small laboratory in Bologna, the Italian town renowned for its solid tradition of silk factories and textile manufacturers, Ada used her talent as a skilled corset maker to create works of art enhancing feminine beauty. Presenting her creations in boxes lined with velvet as if they were precious jewels, led to the name La Perla - representing the most feminine and harmonious gem. On top of La Perla’s feminine collections, it also dedicates collections for masculinity – the menswear. Swimsuits featuring laser-cut motifs that have been hand sewn on tulle

62

and lycra and are illuminated by embroidered sequins. The contemporary wide-brim hat is covered in cotton pique. La Perla focuses on bringing out women silhouette, best represented in swimsuit and nightgowns. A hand sketches embroidered on tulle create a sophisticated sheer effect over long dress with thin shoulder straps, while Dual Jersey Crop Top features an architectural design and built-in bra. The skirt gives form to creative sheer accents, playing with embroidered sequins on tulle. The play of design choice broadens La Perla’s development of concept, allowing them to create other fashion pieces including outers, skirts, loungewear, bags and shoes. The exquisite embroidery finished using the Frastaglio technique and embellished with metallic thread evokes moonlight across the Silk Georgette Set, while a combination of fine materials such as leavers lace, embroidered tulle and silk satin create the allure of a black lingerie set with blue nuances. The slim couture cut silk Cady Coat is worn over trousers of the same fabric and a leavers lace top featuring metal glimmers with Dual Jersey Cups, a representation of modern yet sensual silhouette. An embroidered design of Nude Tulle Bandeau Bra creates the effect of calligraphy across the body.

DIOR MEN The Art of Falling Apart

How does an individual’s past grow and morph into his present without nostalgia – a question that Kris Van Assche, creative director of Dior Homme, poses for this season. The idea of ‘The Hybrid’ is the key of this collection, where currently no one just fit into one box; they fit into many and all at once. There might be an idea of the new wave or skate that somebody has grown up with, but it is what those things and people have grown into now that matters. Traces of memory and tradition can still exist but these happen without nostalgia: this is the hybridization of now. In the ritual show square, lit by stark, red neon to the thud of electronic body music, an idea of rites of passage is played out in a palette of black, red and white. Silhouettes are in turn a combination and exaggeration of volumes and shapes – noble materials are contrasted with or made into the everyday; grand maison traditions come up against militant subversions; prototypical ideas of luxury are questioned and tempered by new techniques and tastes. Just as the Rob Macgregor Tartan became the all-American-buffalo plaid – the touchstone red and black pattern in various fabrications for this season

64

– so too oxford bags could be seen to have transformed into voluminous ‘workwear’ skater pants. Traditional fair isles knit and subverted, couture embroidery techniques are used to almost disruptive effect, while Dior florals from the archive become a symbol of provocation rather than prettiness or preciousness. Coats and scarf combined with plaid hats, where one from the past could relate in a modern way, yet revealing the sense of unusual and jolt. Nothing is a necessity and nothing is forbidden – personality and culture blends together as one. Yet there is also a sense of celebration as well as rebellion in the collection, highlighted by the filmic backdrop od dancing figures. In Willy Vanderperre’s movie – a specially commissioned project for the show – the same boys who appear on the catwalk are also the stars of the film, reveling in this moment in time. Kris Van Assche added “the collection is about taking elements of the past, but bringing them into the present and reflecting on where we are now, in the situation of today. It’s a moment in time for a contemporary generation.”

FENDI

Playful and Cozy The Fendi Men’s Fall/Winter 2016-2017 Collection presents intimately playful pieces with cozily domestic tone. It projects an idea of private luxury, coexisting perfectly with the urban frenzy. Silhouette is soft and comfortable, and nothing would represent it more accurately than the cocooning ease of a bathrobe from belted coats and elongated shirts. Outerwear has a welcoming roominess; jumpers look like they were put together from loved bits and pieces. FENDI has successfully suggests homemade pleasure by the use of knitwear, long and loose jumpers, braided bands that draw lines across coats and jackets, long and droopy scarves wrapped around the neck. It looks warm, feels warm and gives warmth. Homeliness, roominess, whatever it might be called, the collection represents all things cozy. Trousers have a relaxed ease; blousons add a hint of protection – intriguing, organic textures call for tactile explorations where a touch is never enough. Patterns are present to entertain the eye: checked patterns stolen from plaids and throws provide visual rhythm, fused on knitted pieces and felted wool tailoring or turned into intarsia on fur and sheepskin. As ever at FENDI, nothing is what it seems when it comes to

66

the work of their high-skilled artisans: fur looks like fabric, and fabric like fur. Comic strip elements migrate from the newspaper read on the couch to coats and jackets for character enhancement. What was once a daily activity – reinterpreted aesthetically to a piece of clothing. Silk bandanas and pajamas have an insouciant laziness while sheepskin bucket hats hint at quick trips outside. Attention to details is incredible, from luxurious surprises such as a mink perfecto and shaggy sheepskin coats to intimate pieces embodied by fur slippers and sneakers with trekking details. Thick and furry outerwear gives the sense of a sheltering embrace – restful and welcoming. Accessories in FENDI are a must – outsized sheepskin shoppers to hold to oneself, Selleria Peekaboo bags decorated with the iconic #FendiFaces, big rucksacks. Shielding sunglasses, one of the key elements in designer Lagerfeld’s signature look, satisfy the need for privacy. Blended within the entire collection is the color palette. Warm and welcoming yet still keeping alive FENDI’s colorful eccentricity: organic hues of brown, green, grey and black fused into melting textures with flashes of bright red, yellow and light.

Rob Peetoom himself is a worldwide well-known hairdresser that has been active since 1965. He built his salon based on his own philosophy: natural beauty. Trying to bring out one’s beauty by enhancing the strongest point. It is about focusing in consultation process where each customer will have a professional discussion with the best expertise to make a difference on how one look and how one feel about the look. After setting his heart in the local site of Petitenget, Seminyak, Rob and his personal architect Ruud van Oosterhout travelled around Bali to take in Balinese culture on mostly architectural aspects: materials and construction system in order to harmonize with surrounding properties and perceiving traditional architecture of the island. The three building complex have roofs of various height and size, while the buildings floats on a reservoir of water with stepping stones to connect and overflow into the rice paddies – a major feature in Bali. Using all local materials

and workforces, the buildings are made of recyclable elements such as bamboos, stones and clay combined with local wood sorts. Having clientele from all over the world in daily basis emphasis that each client is unlike the other. Different skin tones, hair types and texture prove that each consultation session a very important part of the entire service. Rob Peetoom has already opened and developed over 16 salons in major cities in Holland for more than 50 years. Rob Peetoom salon in Bali, Indonesia is based and operated with the same soul and philosophy as its salons in Holland – in Balinese setting. Boosting a natural sense of experience, Rob Peetoom attempts to use the natural airflow with fans rather than using air-conditioners. Such peaceful areas encouraged by various roof height and dark work sorts, enhanced by lots of greens: soft leaves, water lily ponds and other decorative elements.

BURBERRY PARFUM My Burberry Black

The well-known brand for English luxury fashion house with over 500 stores worldwide has expanded their production to fragrances for a while – and now Burberry introduces My Burberry Black – an intense and sensual interpretation of the iconic fragrance My Burberry. Created by Chief Creative and Chief Executive Officer Christopher Bailey in collaboration with renowned perfumer Francis Kurkdjian, the fragrance is inspired by the black Burberry Heritage Trench Coat. British actress Lily James, in collaboration with photographer Mario Testino, is the face of My Burberry Black campaign – her first campaign for the brand.

74

The fragrance is inspired by an experience, returning to a London garden amidst a gathering storm, heavy rain contrasting with the warm and captivating flora. The fragrance bottles the sensual elements of a black Burberry trench coat against bare skin. Fusing the scent of sundrenched jasmine flower and peach nectar with a touch of rose. This signature rose note at the heart of My Burberry is given a sweet and inviting candied twist, while rich amber patchouli rounds off the scent for a deep and captivating finish. The fragrance is housed in a rich, amber-coloured glass bottle, whose overall design reflects the details of the black Burberry

THIERY MUGLER Angel Muse: Hate to Love

In 1992, Angel opened up an uncharted field of possibilities for the perfumer. Just like a new range on the musician’s stave, unprecedented shades on the painter’s palette. It exploded the potential of perfumery, offering it endless gourmandize. To describe the gourmand tidal wave created, addicts would then mention praline, vanilla, red berry jam, along with cotton candy and caramelized candy apple, all reminiscent of childhood scents. Since Angel, countless creations have followed the successful path of gourmandize, dripping with fruit, caramel, licorice and a plethora of other candies – sometimes with a “sticky” feel. Thiery Mugler introduces the latest: streamlined, avant-garde, very MUGLER. Rounded, aerodynamic lines: unexpected. A slender silhouette, sexy curves, almost disorientating. She embodies Angel’s new audacity – and so does her new eau de parfum: Angel MUSE. Angel MUSE is here to renew the style of the gourmand genre. Its obvious gourmand accord has been reworked to be more luminous without ever being overly sweet. It gradually unfolds before delivering its irresistibly elegant, subtle and luminous delights, stimulating our “olfactory appetite.” Angel MUSE was born of an explosive hazelnut cream and vetiver

duo. A never -before experienced, polarizing scent: pure MUGLER. Angel MUSE breaks away from Angel’s regular creative codes with a new design: a cosmic pebble bottle, as if polished, sensual, ergonomic, with perfectly smooth curves: the new star in the Angel cosmos. Formed by an elliptical silver metal ring reminiscent of the organic dimension, signature metal details and streamlined lines. The crystal heart that holds the fragrance discreetly bears the imprint of a star. With the evocation of a “surface of Mars” color: it echoes both the subtle gourmandize of Angel MUSE and the sensuality of the skin, the alchemy between fragrance and skin. A cosmos haloed in rosy light, with the twinkling of a thousand stars. Among them, a planet, brighter than all the others, the first to light up the night with its fiery power: Venus. Or, in the Mugler galaxy: Georgia May Jagger. Her visual campaign evokes the promise of an inner pleasure that you can no longer live without: Angel MUSE invites women to shamelessly surrender to their fragrance. Exhilarating and inspiring, the Muse fascinates and guides us toward new expressions. She casts a spell, exerts magnetism, a power of attraction. Hence the name chosen for this fragrance. The new fragrance you will hate to love.

FERRARI The New GTC4Lusso T

Ferrari Jakarta announces the arrival of the new GTC4Lusso T, as an improved model of the successful GTC4Lusso. It is the first ever four-seater to be powered by a V8 engine – ushering in a whole new Ferrari Grand Touring concept. The car is aimed at drivers seeking a card that is sporty and versatile, while being just as perfect for daily driving. The new GTC4Lusso T is equipped with an evolution of the 3.9 litre V8 turbo, which punches out a maximum of 610 cv at 7,500 rpm, guaranteeing powerful acceleration with maximum torque of 760 Nm available between 3,000 and 5,250 rpm. Despite impressive performance, the GTC4Lusso T fuel consumption figures guarantee extended range, ideal for either driving around town or long trips. The V8 turbo has all the classic Ferrari power unit qualities

80

including razor-sharp throttle response, blistering performance, continuous acceleration at all speeds, exhilarating soundtrack and compact dimensions. It was named the 2016 international Engine of the year. One of the most innovative features is Variable Boost Management, a control software that adjusts torque delivery to suit the gear selected while optimizing fuel consumption. As gears go up from 3rd to 7th, the amount of torque delivered increases up to 760 Nm in 7th gear, thus longer gear ratios in the higher gears to the benefit of fuel consumption. The GTC4Lusso T is equipped with soundtrack, in addition to the flat-plane crankshaft, which synchronizes engine firing and equal-length exhaust headers to equalize the sound. In press-on driving, the 4WS (rear-wheel steering) helps

provide a sharper response to steering wheel inputs, both entering and exiting corners. The Magnaride SCM-E damper control system represents the state-of-the-art in control algorithm development, while body control is made adapted to the car’s weight distribution and suspension characteristics, which optimizes tyre contact based on the sensitivity to vertical frequencies. The Side Slip Control 3.0 (SSC3) system dialogues with the new GTC4Lusso T to suit suffering dynamic and grip conditions. The five Manettino positions (Ice, Wet, Comfort, Sport, ESC OFF) underscore the potential of the car’s

architecture and vehicle dynamics controls. The GTC4Lusso T is designed by Ferrari’s Styling Centre, maintaining the same innovative take on the shooting brake coupe as the V12 version, reinterpreting the concept with an extremely streamlined, tapered shape that gives it an almost fastback like silhouette. It also features the unique Dual Cockpit architecture, designed to enhance the shared driving experience for both driver and passenger.

A New Home Attitude

Freeman Minotti2016 indoor collection is designed and coordinated by Rodolfo Dordoni. Graduated and trained as a high caliber architect, his design approach is highly influenced by architectural value, and for Minotti 2016 indoor collection, Dordoni focuses on living space not as a machine we live in as Le Corbusier once said, but also as a theatrical backdrop for our emotions. The inspiration for this “2016 Collection – A New Home Attitude” is contemporary habitat, acts as a stylistic unfolding of the way living environments are conceived, in an elegant and simplistic way. The first in this collection is the FREEMAN SEATING SYSTEM, in three different products: Freeman “Duvet”, Freeman “Tailor” and Freeman “Lounge”. Freeman “Duvet” features smooth, enveloping lines and extra-soft cushions that, like a warm embrace, induce a feeling of pure relaxation.Freeman “Tailor” interprets the current widespread need to create dynamic in an orderly clustering of shapes. Its open worked dial with the three iconic counters is enlivened by red accents as this eminently virile chronograph boldly flaunts its impressive horological credentials, beating at an impressive 5 Hz frequency. 45 mm of steel and sapphire form the dynamic and vigorous exterior of the El Primero 36’000 VpH chronograph, whose athletic heart is visible through both sides of the case that is water-resistant to 100 metres. The slate grey inner bezel ring, bearing facetted luminescent hour-markers swept over by similarly facetted luminescent hours and minutes hands.

BREITLING Chronoliner Blacksteel Breitling introduces the triple timezone chronograph, inspired by a watch from the 1950s-1960s, in an all-black new livery accentuating its original and timeless style. The steel case is coated with a highresistance carbon-based treatment. Its satin-brushed surfaces create a subtle contrast with the shiny, ultra-hard and scratch-resistant ceramic bezel. To set off on a longhaul flight around the world, the Chronoliner combines the two functions most useful to pilots and globetrotters: a chronograph to measure flight times and a triple timezone display to juggle with the time around the world, precisely powered by a selfwinding chronograph movement chronometer-certified by the COSC.

GALERI HADIPRANA Balinese Traditional Contemporary Paintings

Hadiprana Gallery displays paintings from Balinese artists, whose works reflect their love of Indonesian traditional culture, Bali specifically.Collecting Balinese Paintings is a reflection of art collector Mr. Hanifah Komala’s love for Bali, just like collecting Indonesia paintings reflects his love to Indonesia. The paintings represent the culture, the life, the magical feeling one feels when exploring Bali in a glimpse of the eye. The traditional paintings show how much familiarity and surrounding acknowledgement the painters have, and such love is poured into the each artwork. The exhibition is titled “Balinese Traditional Contemporary Paintings: Keliki Miraculous & Batuan Jocularity” and is held in Hadiprana Gallery, Kemang, Jakarta from the 7th to 21st of October 2016, and is officiated by Mr. Hanifah Komala. He described Keliki and Batuan Paintings in his view as a lot of work, love and passion. The exhibition itself displays 14 Batuan paintings and 115 Keliki paintings by 48 different artists including Ida Bagus Togog, Ida Bagus Widja, Ketut Nama, Made Ocen, Wayan Nengah and Made Jongko. Ida Bagus Made Togog (Batuan, 1913-1989) - Performance, 50x65 cm

The Batuan and Keliki works like all traditional Balinese Paintings in the exhibition are all originated from the Kamasan style of paintings (based on Wayang Kulit / shadow puppet) that were used to decorate the palaces but then slowly transformed into more lifelike forms from the late 1920s following the demise of many Balinese kingdoms and the start of the colonial rules in Bali, which

put them in contact with the Western. It was further influenced by the arrival of foreign artists that introduced perspective and colors. The painting technique from 1930s has been mostly preserved in today’s traditional paintings. Currently the subject is much more varied, from wayang story, idyllic Bali life to the most happening event in Indonesia. Balinese have been extensively into art and

painting, even more than in any other part in Indonesia, consequent to the fact that Art and Life are part of each other in the paradise island. Batuan is a village located in Bali, in Sukawati, sub-district of Gianyar to be precise. Batuan painters start painting based on the idea of local tantric stories, fables and myths, which overtime developed into more contemporary concept or modern Bali culture to daily lifestyle, which is interesting enough for tourists from across the globe and even across Indonesia. Besides theme, techniques are also developing: from ngorten – pencil sketches, nyawi – sketching and inking, ngucak – applying distance, menyunin – applying dimension, nyawi – adding ornaments and colored details, to ngewarna – the art of coloring.

126

Made Ocen - Barong Dancing, 18 x 12 cm, Keliki

The painstaking technique to which Balinese painters work by in plain steps are: the sketch – black and white drawings, shading and coloring, and the final coloring. A typical painting takes minimum a month of time to finish, before it is sold for nothing – that is just how Bali works. The qualities are not to be questioned, yet as unfortunate as it was, the foreigners discover the treasure long before the locals did – thus many of the best collections by old masters could only be found abroad, only some of them left in Indonesia, specifically in Arma and Neka Museum, Bali. However the utmost importance is that the paintings are alive and well with the growing interest amongst Indonesian collectors and the continued interest in foreign collectors visiting or living in Bali have not

fade. Local galleries, such as Hadiprana and Auction House, have showed more and more interest and support overtime. Whilst on the other hand, Keliki paintings involve techniques originally applied by Ubud painters, to then be spread in Keliki village. The size of the paintings are originally small, which shows a great deal techniques for such detailed drawings. Mr. Hanifah Komala personally encourage people to start collecting art if one haven’t already, as it brings one of the greatest pleasure in life. It is not too late for us – locals and internationals – to start looking and enjoy this kind of painting exhibition, as the industry grows

stronger overtime. Either contemporary or traditional, modern lifestyle or historically related, each painting has its own value, story and experience attached to it. The more one have, the more one study, thus more fascinating it becomes. Balinese quality paintings represent some of Bali’s best characteristics: a piece of its history that goes back hundred of years, a piece of art that qualifies as palace of the kings’ decoration, the mind and soul of the artist, the transparency of the culture – no place to hide, no bull in Balinese Art, and it is either rubbish or a masterpiece – plain for everyone to see just like painting in Renaissance era: there are no room for second rated works.
