Every woman has her own charm. This saying is beautifully mirrored by a number of Surabaya’s charming ladies, as they showcase their best poses in a photo shoot. Coming from the crème de la crème of Surabaya society, all the seven looked very excited with their wardrobe during the photo session, which was held in an upscale photo studio in the city’s prime area. The first part of the shoot sees all the ladies dressed in elegant evening gowns with everyone displaying their own charms. Beautified with jewellery from Mondial, their adorable appearances indeed capture the spirit of elegance; and more of their characters are displayed as they pose in different dresses throughout the session.

Chic, elite and socially superior are what best describe these glamorous women who run in the top social circles in the coastal capital of East Java. These seven glorious women belong to a socialites community called NE2. “In my dictionary, living the life of a socialite should not just about going to parties or attending fashionable events. Making a positive impact on society at large is what this community is focused on,” Samantha Eve Young, the founder of NE2, says. “NE2 was established on May 6 this year at Galaxy Fashion Week. We support the event by providing its runaway and catwalk as well as hosting a talk show,” she further says.

11/28/16 11:14 PM
A few months later, Samantha shared her ideas with the community’s members. “We should do something more significant to others without leaving the world of fashion.” Later, NE2 initiated a charity event wrapped in fashion show; and Malam Kasih, literally meaning A Night of Love, was held at Pakuwon Imperial Ballroom on Oct. 28 this year. “Fashion is our choice for the theme of the event, as it reflects the passion for what we all have in common,” Natalia Cecilia Tanudjaja says. “And especially that four of us here have inked their names in the country’s fashion industry”, Fifi Indrawati adds, referring to Foneke Kho with her collections under the brand Foorie, Elizabeth Njo May Fen who owns the brand Ketique, Catherine Njoo with her
eponymous brand, and Lisa Gunawan who reached her fame in the modelling world from the 1970s to 2000s. The three brands: Foorie, Ketique and Catherine Njoo; along with those of renowned designers Deden Siswanto and Priska Henata, were showcased at Malam Kasih fashion show. All the proceeds from the show were donated to Breast Cancer Foundation and Yayasan Pondok Kasih to help the needy. Over dinner, after the photo session, Registry Indonesia gets to know all the seven of NE2 more up-close and personal, as these gorgeous ladies talk about the art of living in Surabaya’s high society.

Sophisticated Samantha Juggling between running her businesses and engaging in social activities, Samantha Eve Young surely knows how to appreciate the beauty of what life has to offer. The owner of Serena Spa, de Jatra and general contractor PT Hansen Multi Mandiri says that, despite her busy daily routine, she’s still able to allocate her time for social events. She’s currently chairwoman of several communities in Surabaya, including Yayasan Genta Pena. “I established Yayasan Genta Pena two years ago. We collected sewing machines and opened a free tailoring class for underprivileged children. Doing something that benefits others truly makes life become meaningful; and this is what my socialite friends and I also want to focus on,” she muses. Travelling is another activity that she likes to treasure, with the US and Japan being on the top list of her favourite destinations. “My two sons are currently studying overseas, the older is in the US and the younger is in Japan. So, now you know why I regard these two destinations as my favourite,” she asserts with a grin. As for the domestic destination, Samantha says she likes Bali best for the island’s beautiful ocean and snorkelling. Samantha has a penchant for cooking, and among her favourite dishes are crab and prawn. “I love seafood and of course Indonesian cuisine, especially the spicy dishes.” In the realm of fashion, Max Mara, Alexander McQueen and Ketique are her favourite brands. “They are edgy, simple yet elegant,” she says.

Amazing Afen Elizabeth Njo May Fen, also known by her nickname Afen, is no ordinary fashion designer. It’s all started with her dream of becoming a fashion designer when she was in 6th grade. Autodidactic in art of fashion and sewing design, Afen eventually realized her dream at the age of 20. Her success as an autodidact is also credited to her outstanding talent and creativity. Now Afen has her own label, Ketique, which boasts the uniqueness in both design and function. “My latest collection features edgy convertible dress, which can be worn as a skirt or a strapless dress.” She also incorporates contemporary handmade batik fabric into her unique yet beautiful design. Another worth mentioning is the creation of her seamless gown, which rewarded her with the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI) award in 2008. More of her achievements that have been recorded in her portfolio include attending prestigious fashion events, being speaker in various fashion workshops, and running her own garment business, just to name a few. In her view of today’s fashion brands, “I see there are many brands featuring beautiful designs. But if you ask me my most favourite, it is…hmmm…Ketique!” she exclaims with a laugh. Not just in the world of fashion, Afen’s artistic talent is also extended to her ability to beautifully arrange flowers. “I make flower arrangements in my spare time. It’s just my hobby.” Afen sees the importance of travel as a way of recharging her batteries. “I like Bali and Lombok for their natural beauty. London is where you can discover a blend of cosmopolitan and traditional elements. I also like Medan, it’s where I was born and raised,” she concludes with a smile.

Lovely Lisa Energetic and outgoing are the impressions shown when meeting Lisa Gunawan. Her beauty, which earned her popularity as a model back from the 1970s until 2000s, still remains today. This can be seen from her savoir-faire of elegant posing, which she has had since her early modelling career. Throughout her entire modelling career, she has walked the catwalks for numerous collections in various esteemed fashion shows not only in Indonesia but also overseas, including Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Netherlands. With an amicable smile, Lisa says that she admires those Indonesian designers who have made their way to the international fashion scene. “Biyan is one example, as I love his creativity and innovative design.” As for the international labels, Lisa puts Issey Miyake and Roberto Cavalli as her favourite. “They are just outstanding for their elegant styles,” says Lisa, who was once bestowed by the Indonesian Journalist Association (PWI) in 1975 as the country’s top model. Lisa maintains her beauty well, which she says it is the result of exercising regularly and her dietary intake. “Yes, I routinely work out and consume healthy food. I especially like eating salad, even though once in a while I love having bakso with a lot of chilli,” she says with a laugh. For her, travelling is one way of appreciating the beauty of life. “There are so many beautiful places in the world, but I must say that Europe and North America have their own charms with amazing tourist attractions,” she asserts.

Cheerful Catherine “Indonesia is home to various exquisite fabrics, such as batik, songket, tenun, ikat and rang-rang. UNESCO has designated batik as a world heritage, and it’s time for us to promote other fabrics to gain international recognition,“ says fashion designer Catherine Njoo. Her eponymous brand, Catherine Njoo, boasts collections that use these traditional fabrics to capture edgy and elegant style. “I use batik patterns in my latest collection that features sophisticated dresses. It has been four years that I run my eponymous label, and my aim as a fashion designer is also to make batik to be more and more recognised globally,” says Catherine, who recently showcased her latest collection at Ciputra World Fashion Week. “The beauty of batik is that it can be transformed into edgy, modern or even couture design,” she asserts. Asked about her favourite fashion brands, the gorgeous fashion designer replies excitingly, “Biyan, Elle Saab and Lanvin for their elegance and sophistication.” Just like her unique design that she does not want to follow the crowd, so does her travel habit. “I like exotic places, so I list Raja Ampat and Maldives as my most favourite holiday destinations. I’m not into a mainstream vacation,” she says with a laugh. As for the food, truffle angel hair pasta, poached egg and nasi campur are what she likes best. “They’re just delicious. My culinary journey can be in any day of the week, but weekend especially Sunday I reserve it to be spent with my husband and our daughter and son – going to Church, shopping at a mall, dining out, you name it,” she says with a chuckle.

Fabulous Foneke “It’s all about fashion, from shopping to designing clothes”, says Foneke Kho when asked about her hobby. Fashion is also her passion that led to the establishment of her clothing line under the brand Foorie. “The idea to start my clothing line came from my penchant for unique design. Foorie offers simple casual dress in elegant design. The combination of simplicity and elegance is what makes the brand unique,” she says while showing her designs from her mobile device. Foneke’s passion for fashion also explains why she puts New York, San Francisco and Hong Kong as her favourite destinations. “Of course sightseeing is always fun when travelling to these cities, but what also make the three cities attractive to me are shopping venues that house many famous brands.” In elaborating on her favourite fashion labels, Foneke says she likes Cavalli for elegant design, Farah Khan for casual wear, and JPG for awesome accessories. “What makes me frustrated sometimes is that I can’t find the collections from these brands in Surabaya,” she says with a laugh. In her daily life, regardless of how busy she is, Sunday is where she spends quality family time with her husband and their two children. “Church is where we start our Sunday before doing other activities, like having a culinary fun for example,” she further says. Speaking of food, Japanese and Indonesian cuisines are what she likes the most. “Yet, I also appreciate other culinary fares, such as Italian food.”

Nice Natalia Having many friends and good network is one reason why Natalia Cecilia Tanudjaja likes to live in Surabaya. Natalia is the general manager of Ciputra Golf, Club & Hotel, and the owner of property agent Era Galaxy Jemur Sari. She also actively involves in a number of professional organisations, such as the Indonesian Golf Course Owners Association (APLGI), Indonesian Club Manager Association (ICMA) and Casa Grande Association; as well as social organisations, like Yayasan Genta Pena, and United in Friendship (Unif), a non-profit organisation that focuses on education. Her two leadership roles and organisational activities undoubtedly fill her daily agenda, which in turn also reward her with a long list of good friends and professional relations. Yet, life for her is not all about working and socialising. “Watching movies and shopping are what I like to do most, especially at weekends. When I feel I just want to stay home, my spare time is cleaning my porcelain dolls collection,” she says with a smile. Natalia is a globetrotter who has travelled to many places worldwide; from mainstream places like Paris, Milan and Las Vegas, to unique destinations like Bahamas and Canary Islands. “But nothing can beat Bali when it comes to a place with nice beach atmosphere,” she attests. As for the food, she says she appreciates what the culinary world has to offer. “But if you ask what I really like, I love mussel in wine sauce and caramelised butter crab.” Asked about her favourite fashion brands, she replies excitingly, “I love Karen Millen and Zara collections, and party dresses by Catherine Njoo. They’re sophisticated and elegant.”

Fascinating Fifi “Home sweet home is in the city itself” is how Fifi Indrawati describes Surabaya. “The city is still far behind in terms of shopping and entertainment destinations, especially when compared to Jakarta. But it’s growing and the infrastructure gets improved along the way,” Fifi remarks. Nevertheless, as she further says, “Surabaya is a great destination for culinary excitement, with numerous places to spoil your palate. And the rawon here is the best.” When asked about her favourite dishes, she replies with a laugh, “Of course rawon, as I just mentioned. Next are Thai food and Japanese cuisine.” Weekend is where she usually explores her culinary journey and other fun activities, like watching movies, as part of quality family time with her husband and their two children. While singing and swimming are what she likes to do at her spare time, Fifi takes travelling as an appreciation of what the life has to offer. “Sightseeing is what I treasure the most when travelling, as I especially enjoy viewing historic buildings and landscapes. Next is shopping, but it depends on the destinations. Soma places, like Paris and Hong Kong, for instance, can get you into a shopping spree indulgence.” Speaking of shopping, Fifi says she appreciates good designs regardless of the brands. “There are many designs we even can get here in Surabaya, like at Tunjungan Plaza for example. But if you ask me to list the three best labels, I go with BCBG for my casual wear, I like Farah Khan for her girly design, and Biyan is just superb with his classic style.”

CARTIER
Miracle Takes Shape
Cartier introduces the Cartier Magicien, presenting a question of design. Is it an illusion? Mystery? Or is it a simple fascination? The mastering of the stroke, the exactness of the lines which, little by little, liberate movement, magnify energy, initiate rhythm. Visual bearings are blurred, the gaze wanders, moves on, and rebounds from one sparkling facet to another. Tiny geometric designs paved with precious diamonds interlace on the Incantation necklace. With a single touch, the necklace is transformed and the curve is inverted in a stunning feat of technical prowess never before seen in High Jewellery workshops. Like a conjuring trick, or perhaps pure magic, the length and dimensions of
36
the piece change as it becomes more intimate, fitted more closely to the neck, and opens out. A removable sapphire is fastened onto the glorious corolla of the unfolded necklace; and, when detached, the stone can be mounted onto a ring. Explosive and vibrant, light sparkles and bursts out of the diamonds. With an accumulation of gemstones, a combination of cuts, Cartier captures this vivid force at its source and reveals every one of its possibilities. Refraction and diffraction, like a magical alphabet, play together in a game of never-ending reflections. An expression of Cartier’s savoir-faire which, at every moment, makes colour dance within the diamond’s pristine prism. Briolettes and clusters paved in

circles or studded around a sphere to from the chain to the pendant, the diamond reigns supreme over the Paillettes necklace. Inspired by the lightness and perfectly rounded shape of a dandelion clock, Cartier has created two globes faceted with rose-cut diamonds. Inside, blazing yellow diamonds glow with a never fading light. Flowers with their berries gorged with flavor. Rubellite or beryl, diamond or ruby, emerald, sapphire or opal. Cartier orchestrates this profusion of precious materials to liberate tactile sensations and emotions. Here lies Cartier’s enigmatic magic.
For the Quetzal set, Cartier has drawn inspiration from a mythical Aztec creature: the sacred feathered serpent, bridging earth and sky. The fluidity of the lines and suppleness of the tiny links paved with diamonds sit alongside exquisitely delicate feather-scales. The raised shadows of black lacquer evoke the animal’s serpentine sinuosity and at the center glows a sugarloaf rubellite. Then, the mythical creature winds its form around the edge of the ear to create the stunning finishing touch for this extraordinary and innovative piece of jewellery.

EDWARD CHIU Purity and Love of Fei Cui
Edward Chiu brand will forever be associated with contemporary jade jewelry. His Art is acclaimed for jewelry of timeless elegance and exquisite museum quality pieces throughout the world, which renowned amongst socialites, popular celebrities and distinguished members of royalty. Since ancient times, Jade has always been a symbol of purity, love and luminous beauty in China. Artifacts made of jade were signed from as early as 3rd millennium B.C. and are known to be coveted by commoners and “the lords of men” alike. The symbolism is deeply ingrained among native Chinese, so much so that the mere mention of it would evoke this sense of purity, as in a famous poem by Wang Changling: If friends and relatives in Luoyang ask after me, just say my heart is as pure as a piece of ice in a crystal vase. Every educated Chinese is familiar with the tale of Bian He’s Jade, first told in Hanfeizi and has since figured in many episodes in Chinese history, story as follow: Once a man of Chu named Bian He came by an uncut jade in the Chu hills and submitted it as a present to King Li of Chu. King Li had a jeweler regarding the jade
38
REGISTRY INDONESIA
Jewellery Edward Chiu Nov 2016.indd 38

as an ordinary stone, thereby had Bian He’s left foot cut off. Bian He submitted once again to King Wu, Li’s ascendant, whom did the same to his right foot after a jeweler said the jade is an ordinary stone. The next ascendant King Wen, asked Bian He why is he crying so bitterly upon his cut feet, whereas there were so many men had the same thing done to them. Bian He replied, “I am lamenting not the loss of my feet but for the calling of a precious gem an ordinary stone and for their dubbing an honest man a liar”. King Wen had a jeweler polish up the jade and got the treasure out at last, before then designated the stone as “the Jade of Bian He”. The symbol of Chinese love birds, always husband and wife who would never part from each other, the red fei and green cui form one of there pairs that are perpetually, obstinately in love. This collection we now call Jade Fei Cui – Fei is red in color while Cui is green – a tantamount to the profound and deep-rooted emotion.

Oyster Perpetual Pearlmaster 39
Rolex is introducing a new version of the Oyster Perpetual Pearlmaster 39 in 18 ct Everose Gold adorned with the rarest diamonds. As an interpretation to highlight the extent of Rolex’s expertise in gem setting, the 39mm Pearlmaster is equipped with the new generation calibre 3235 backed by 14 patents to incorporate the Chronergy escapement developed by Rolex. Rolex has its own gemology laboratory, where experienced specialists check the quality of the precious stones. The gems are then entrusted to the in-house master gem-setters, experts in the art of exalting the stones’ natural lustre. In addition to the intrinsic quality of the stones, several criteria contribute to the reputation of Rolex gem-setting: the precise alignment of the height of the gems, their orientation and

position, the robustness, the regularity and aesthetics of the setting, as well as the finishing of the beads. The Pearlmaster 39’s Oyster case is guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet) – a paragon of robustness, proportion and elegance. The fluted case back is hermetically screwed down where only Rolex watchmakers can access. Fitted with the Twinlock double waterproofness system, the winding crown screws down against the case, while the crystal with a Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock is made of virtually scratchproof sapphire. A concealed Crownclasp enhances both the aesthetics and functionality. An alternative version of the bracelet is available with intermediate links in 18 ct white gold sublimely set with diamonds echoing the bezel and dial.

As a forefront of watchmaking, a self-winding mechanical movement and consummate demonstration of Rolex technology, the Pearlmaster 39 offers fundamental gains in terms of power reserve, resistance to shocks and magnetism, convenience and reliability. Made of nickel-phosphorus, it is also insensitive to magnetic interference. This paramagnetic alloy allows higher precision, up to 10 times more precise that a traditional hairspring in case of shocks. An optimized blue Parachrom hairspring is fitted to the oscillator, the true heart of the watch.
The Pearlmaster 39 is covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification redefined by Rolex in 2015. The certification applies to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance in terms of precision (-2/+2 seconds per day, more than twice that required of an official chronometer), power reserve, waterproofness and self-winding. Superior status is symbolized by the green Rolex seal, coupled with an international five-year guarantee.

RICHARD MILLE Tourbillon Story
Tourbillon RM 27-02 Rafael Nadal
44
Richard Mille’s success is founded upon three crucial elements: the best in technical innovation, the best of artistry and architecture, the best of the heritage and culture of fine watchmaking with hand finishing. From the very inception of the brand, Richard Mille endeavored to apply the techniques and materials found in the most innovative sectors, such as in the domains of F1 racing car development and the aerospace industry, to watchmaking, with the goal of creating an extreme timepiece. Today, more than 15 years later, the brand has definitively reached the pinnacle of famous names in watchmaking; its success remains irrefutable. The Richard Mille watches collection now contains more than sixty watches, each having been designed and produced with the same passion and uncompromising principles that guided the brand’s first pieces. It is in the run-up to the 114th French Open, where emblematic Richard Mille partner Rafael Nadal will be vying for his tenth title, that the Swiss Jura brand is unveiling its new manual winding tourbillon caliber dedicated to tennis. The structure of Tourbillon RM 27-02 Rafael Nadal, inspired by the chassis of racing cars, enhances rigidity

and resistance to impacts when used in watchmaking. The bezel and solid case back in NTPT® carbon/TPT® quartz are then attached to the unibody baseplate using 12 spline screws in grade 5 titanium, while sapphire crystal with anti-glare treatment adds the final finishing touch to this unique combination. Working with North Thin Ply Technology, Richard Mille’s engineers have developed a highly original material known as TPT® quartz, composed of hundreds of layers of quartz filaments piled on top of each other. These fibers are exceptionally resistant to high temperatures and are characterized by extreme strength and
transparency to electromagnetic waves. Today, a cutting-edge expression of horological transparency created expressly for the Watches & Wonders event in Hong Kong is presented with the magnificent RM 56-02 Sapphire Tourbillon and its cable suspended movement. By incorporating this cabled movement design within a world of transparent sapphire, an ultimate expression of weightlessness and transparency is evoked, created from grade 5 titanium and entirely suspended within the sapphire watchcase by specially developed single braided cable of only 0.35mm thickness. This

entire cable unit is attached to a separate indicator located below 12 o’clock allowing an easy visual inspection of the cable tension, to ensure that it is always operating within the designated norms. Richard Mille’s engineers have added to the previous use of sapphire movement parts a new design of winding barrel bridge, tourbillon and center bridges in sapphire. The RM 56-02 will be released in a limited edition of 10 examples worldwide. Richard Mille is proud to celebrate the victory of Bubba Watson, who entered the RM family in 2010. A collaboration, which has inspired a collection of calibers dedicated to golf: the RM 038 Tourbillon ‘Bubba Watson,’ the caliber RM 055, and more recently, the Tourbillon RM 38-01. The evolution of the golf watch has now inherited from the introduction of a G sensor to evaluate the swings’ power. Past Masters Champion and Richard Mille team member, Bubba Watson, dazzled the crowd at this year’s Masters Tournament as he fought to stay atop the leaderboard through the weekend, winning out in the end to claim yet another green jacket. With this fantastic victory, Bubba Watson climbs to second place on the FedEx Cup Rankings and now sits at No. 4 on the official world golf rankings. The new RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur epitomizes these traditions of horological artistry in a vibrant expression of watchmaking distinctive to Richard Mille’s vision of timekeeping in the 21st century. For the creation of this timepiece a special flower, the Tourbillon RM 38-01 G-Sensor Bubba Watson

Magnolia, was chosen as its existence marks millions of years on the earth even before the emergence of bees within the environment, flowering in an endless cycle of birth and regeneration. The Magnolia’s delicate appearance stands in sharp contrast to its strong organic structure and resilience in difficult environments. At the lower left of the dial on the RM 19-02 we see the Magnolia surrounding a flying tourbillon escapement with five delicate, hand created and colored petals. Working either in passing, or on demand using the pusher at 9 o’clock, the Magnolia opens and closes with rhythmic regularity in
a delicate kinetic ballet. The entire flying tourbillon with its stone set stamen actually moves upwards 1mm when fully opened, exactly copying the natural motion of the flower’s arching upwards of its stamen to increase its chances of pollination. Attention to details such as these exemplify the Richard Mille approach to watchmaking artistry on every level. A complex mechanism comprising 5 levers surrounds the underside of the petals, all using energy supplied by a separate, second winding barrel. The RM 19-02 Fleur is limited to a production of 30 pieces worldwide.

CHOPARD
L.U.C. XP 35 mm Esprit de Fleurier Peony
This legendary flower has been casting its velvet-smooth spells across legends and fairy tales since the dawn of time. Today, the peony unfurls its silky petals and delicate scents onto the famous Chopard timepiece. It adorns the dial and the manufacture movement of the L.U.C XP 35 m Esprit de Fleurier Peony, an eminently feminine model governed by the principles of Haute Horlogerie. The dainty curves of the peony bloom on the Tahitian mother-of-pearl dial, where this majestic flower appears clothed in gold and decked in diamonds finely set into the rose gold dial base. It was in 2014 that the first ultra-thin L.U.C watch was created in a 35 mm diameter, to offer women a version exclusively made for them of a watch that they previously tended to borrow from men with its
48
light, subtle and timeless lines powered by a high-precision movement. The beating heart is the L.U.C 96.23-L calibre. Produced by Chopard Manufacture and graced with Fleurisanne engraving, an almost extinct handcraft. Where beauty meets precision, a gorgeous peony blossoms in a 8-piece limited edition watch: the L.U.C XP 35 mm Esprit de Fleurier Peony. The peony came to embody good health, before being associated with an increasing number of virtues. This flower acquired symbolic status as a harbinger of good luck, abundance and happy marriages, and has represented wealth and honour in Asia ever since. Appreciated for its aesthetic qualities, its opulence and its incredible scent. It adorned imperial palaces and inspired artists who interpreted it in all its forms,

raising it to the rank of a symbol of springtime and a metaphor of feminine beauty. While fleurier is a historical cradle of watchmaking that has given rise to a number of skills that are now becoming increasingly rare, Chopard wished to perpetuate these traditions that represent a cultural and aesthetic heritage. Fleurisanne engraving is one of these decorative artistic techniques that are an integral part of the horological heritage. Chopard restores the noble pedigree of this form of artistry through the
L.U.C XP 35 mm Esprit de Fleurier Peony. Its rose gold movement is adorned with the peony motif according to the Fleurisanne engraving technique. This movement is endowed with the patented TwinÂŽ technology, involving two stacked coaxial barrels ensuring a 65-hour power reserve. Accommodating such a self-winding movement within a 7.5 mm ultra-thin case is a daunting technical challenge along with the clever micro-rotor construction.

HERMES
Looks of Superiority
Hermes has been loving nothing more than spoiling herself with cashmere, crocodile and all cozy comfortable outfit, not necessarily bold and underlining a brand. It has been three seasons since current creative director Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski joined the house of Hermes after Christophe Lemaire’s departure. After two seasons, she finally found her grove that is new, bold and fresh with a touch of Hermes attitude in this Fall/Winter 2016 collection. The company keeps increasing in sales and demand overtime, including the ready-to-wear industry. Nadège, completely winning this season, took full control in creating elegant with an ease collection. Nadège see beyond tradition and limitation box, any equestrian ties no riding nods, no horsey motifs and instead hit upon an icy palette, from spearmint to peach sorbet coupled with house classic such as Bordeaux, navy and black. Such risky decision, where even the smallest detail could steer towards the wrong direction, yet she shows her strongest side

so far. Highlighted are hooded shearling jackets, oversized droppedshoulder khaki cable knit cinched with a wide leather belts, bone-colored long sleeved leather dress – again, comfortable, neutral yet elegant. The leatherwork by Hermes always has the look, feel and texture that bring superiority compared with any other. There were sapphire mink vests and an ivory cashmere trouser suit that could take any woman anywhere she could think of, since with Hermes, they do not do trends, they create one. Swathes of grey cashmere layers from culottes to engineered kimono-sleeve dresses to cardigan jackets, every piece is consistently luxurious and glamorous. And that’s before mentioning her series of palladium-studded suede designs. Sock and shoe combinations are also something worth mentioning in this collection. Each looks and pieces make any woman feels like they are being hugged with warmth and luxury. Leather dresses and boots elegantly paired together, with little ornamentation of patches.

GUCCI
Timeless English Look Alessandro Michele thrown a Gucci fashion show at Westminster Abbey, where Queen Elizabeth II was crowned, where Princess Diana had her funeral and where Kate Middleton and Prince William tied the knot. Michele thought that Westminster Abbey is very romantic, in a way, and that only in London can a church approved to be a fashion show venue. As for how he chose London and the Abbey, he enthusiastically said it was for the idea of Gothic, full of history and inspiration from the punk, the Victorian, the eccentric. As one of his creation, he claimed that there is something so punk about the idea of wearing a skirt made of granny’s wardrobe. Guests sat down on tasseled velvet and tapestry pillows decorated with flowers, tigers, cats and rabbits, all the repetitive elements patched into the entire collection from denim jackets to fur coats. There were the vintage debs in dresses, could be found dated back to a 70’s mother’s ball outfit; yobs in stone-washed skinhead jeans; Kensington grannies in printed silk dresses of the Thatcher era; ’90s Spice Girl monster boots and Union Jack sweaters; and a country lady with a padded husky that had somehow crossbred with a gilded, frogged hussar’s jacket.
54
A line up of models such as Nineties runway stars Erin O’Connor, Jacquetta Wheeler and Hannelore Knuts strolled around the stone covered runway in Gucci collection, with intensely bright colors and wild styling. Michele spiked his fey, granny-like aesthetic with embroidered hoodies, soccer jerseys, striped athletic socks and creepers with rainbow platforms, giving ensembles some street wear muscle. “I really love the English aesthetic and it’s something that belongs to my language,” he said backstage. “English culture is in a way very close to my beautiful chaos. In a way I feel it is close to my own, a powerful mix of the past and the present.” Michele continues to hypnotize with what people have come to love about his work; animal-symbol embroideries, glittery bombers, embroidered bags and pearl-studded loafers. Not as one single identifying look, but a collection of something accessible from hair ornament to pair of jeans, a timeless look for generations to come. Michele once said specifically, “the more you communicate the different positioning and the different aesthetic, the better it’s going to be because it helps the consumer understand quicker what you’re doing.”

DIOR
Storytelling Through Clothes The journey from Paris to Blenheim Palace where the Cruise Collection will be shown in the presence of the fashion community is the point of departure for Lucie Meier and Serge Ruffieux, leading the Christian Dior creative team. The inspiration was not only the post-war high society’s wardrobes, but also the restlessness and wanderlust that characterized the period: the urge to travel, to discover the new. English country life is expressed via the tradition of the hunt – its reflection in the decorative arts, rather than its reality. Shots of red are evocative of the hunting pink, rustic tweeds and crisp poplin of country attire, while nineteenth-century equestrian scenes are knitted into intricate pictorial jacquards or fused into English country florals. Those intermingle with rich devoré velvets and silks in Asian and African prints, patterns and embroideries, underscoring a mood of exploration. These inspirations from across the Channel meet the silhouettes and decorative details drawn from Parisian haute couture. The curvilinear form of the Bar jacket is tailored close to the body, and abbreviated at the hip or echoed in grand gestures of cloth – a full sleeve, a gathered peplum or pocket on generous coats. Their volume is Dior, their referent is British, while their spirit is contemporary. The Bar is sometimes bisected, the basque wrapping the hips; other times the shape is transposed to draped tea dresses. Each detail is

drawn from the oeuvre of Monsieur Dior, a reflection of the House’s storied past. Dior’s signature bow is pulled undone, passed through the décolleté or reverse like a foulard, to close and simultaneously embellish, adding a dynamic movement to strict shapes. The conversation between France and England echoes a dialogue between the past and the present, creative exchanges between the two countries. Monsieur Dior frequently turned to the UK for inspiration: his own suits were tailored on Savile Row, and he used the masculinity of fabrics like
English wools, Scottish tweeds and Prince of Wales check to underscore the femininity of his creations. Almost seventy years later, the house of Dior pays homage to that ongoing creative and cultural exchange, staging the runway show of the 2017 Cruise Collection in the heart of the English countryside. The setting is Blenheim Palace, a symbol of quintessential Englishness, in the style the French dubbed Baroque – the birthplace of Winston Churchill, the seat of the dukes of Marlborough, and twice the backdrop for Dior haute couture presentations.

PRADA
Intermingling of Cultures
58
Showcased during the Prada Men’s Spring Summer 2017 show, the Prada woman explores and discovers herself in a physical journey of post-human space, through knowledge and sharing experiences. Designer Miuccia Prada went into the sporty side of the world with transitional bold colour combinations, oversized jackets and headwear. In her expedition, she takes on light fabrics and bright colours, typical of a traveller’s choice of practical clothes but with a touch of the world of sport and outdoor activities such as sailing, parachuting and diving. The prints, the bands, the elastic belts, the socks and the decorative details reflect a mix of different cultures. An innovative and complex structure that creates a bond between the world of sport and the feminine universe. An approach for Miuccia Prada’s goal: to share with other people, other cultures. Different architectures are layered and blend together creating the perfect backdrop for this Prada collection that merges past and present. “This collection is a journey into the history of Prada, but also a journey around the World”, Miuccia Prada explained a few minutes before the show. “I wanted to explore the present, here and now”, the designer said, “Dedicated to young travelers who are looking to share”. A perfect wardrobe for a modern explorer who loves sandals and maxi backpacks to which she hangs shoes and bags. The backpack, full of memories, becomes the symbol of this journey. She carries all the essentials needed for dealing with emergencies: shoes, bags, jackets, eyewear, raincoats, water bottles, torchlights etc. An optimistic, topical collection, sometimes a little tongue-in-cheek, “in case you want to have an evening out,” as Miuccia Prada said. A-line shaped dresses are paired with utilitarian accents including thin belts, backpacks and attached bags at the waist. Free fabric attached to the back of looks creates an almost parachute

Tod’s artisans reinterpret Italian handmade tradition by selecting the best quality leather and crafting unique products with a continuous attention to the smallest details. Each single Tod’s product is a result of the constant pursuit of excellence, an iconic mark of quality and handcrafted heritage. Tod’s clientele have neither the means nor the urge to splurge, just like one of their precious client Della Valle, who happens to be Tod’s CEO as well. Tod’s masterpieces are designed and created for cultured men who travel incessantly and demand the finest quality for numerous aspects in their life. Weightless shoes and bags, practical and easily carried, elegant and long lasting. The campaign for the Tod’s Man Autumn Winter 2016/2017 Collection, shot in a fascinating Italian dwelling, is interpreted by internationally acclaimed actor Jack Huston. It recounts the Tod’s style: a dynamic man whose elegance is interpreted in different contexts throughout the day, while maintaining the same stylistic codes expressing his personality and springing from an attentive choice of elevated quality. Tod’s tends to present its clothes in situ: meaning in a domestic setting, a series of tableaux vivants expressing the lifestyle of the Tod’s man. Generally wearing prestigious clothing lines, sitting on an expensive setting, meeting the most important people imaginable. At the heart of the clothing collection is the leather down jacket. Made with the most exquisite and soft leather, this jacket looks robust while being surprisingly light and

smooth to the touch. In keeping with Tod’s tradition of experimenting with leather treatments, the jacket has wax hand-brushed into it, which results in an attractive vintage look. The leather down jacket is an incredibly versatile garment, which can be worn in both a smart and casual way. The ambience is luxurious, while the fashion is timeless. The Leo Clamp is solid and geometric, produced using traditional techniques of hot metal casting. Treated with a special finish that gives it a
distinctive shimmering appearance and, importantly, enables it to come into contact with leather without impairing the hide’s appearance, the Leo Clamp has this season been applied to shoes in a range of new leathers and colors, hand-sewn on to a variety of styles, including the famous Tod’s Gommino shoe and moccasins and loafers. Andrea Incontri has pinpointed that the label is about evolution, not revolution, and figured that Tod’s needs to find a point of differentiation from other luxury houses.

GIVENCHY
Liberated, Bright and Bold Unleashed in a torrent of new ideas this runway was oddly painted in fondant-pink, lit up in florescent tubes in a confined space and intense lighting yields a diverse and energetic collection, it was freedom. Pictures of young African heavy metal loving men named the Botswana Renegades by photographer Franck Marshall, Moroccan colors and reptiles or festive Berlin ‘club-kids’ spirits were among the many influences of this Freedom themed collection. Romantic, fresh, bright and bold, the twelve Haute Couture silhouettes that shared the Givenchy Men’s runway embodied the same liberated mindset, thanks to this new generation of model muses. Riccardo Tisci grew up in Italy dreaming of America, driven by the land of the free was an interpretation of various subcultures the designer extracted from his recent influence. Givenchy has lined their house motto, from Rottweilers, Sharks, double-headed Dobermans, to Monkeys. Arriving this Fall Winter 2016, the house motto is newfangled Cobras. If Riccardo Tisci refuses to get over wild animals, then we should not oppose. Translating Cobras into a line of clothing could be done in

numerous ways, although does not make it any easier. Tisci presents the Cobras as intarsias, traditional prints, embroidery on typical sweaters and oddly laser cut-out bomber jackets that had a lumpy effect – a real head-turner in its odd way. Slim fit suits, double-breasted coats, bomber jackets, layers, denim fabric jumpsuit, straight-leg pants, belts with large buckles, velvet boots and sneakers, crocodile skin gloves - these are the key element of Givenchy Fall-Winter 2016/2017 menswear collection. The bejeweled crystal and studded in riveted elements strikes a very stark contrast in the Fall Winter 2016 collection. The Givenchy’s renegade cult gang dressed up in leather and metal-heavy, bodies volumes, and more blistered forms offer a plenty, visual subtlety, and more muscular than ever. Tisci created homage cowboys’ coats yokes of jackets, with shiny crystals gleaming, including a patched of leather in copper rivets, simply penny-sized studs. The color palette includes mainly dark and denim blue, gray, red, burgundy, beige, brown and military green on cashmere, technical fabrics, leather, velvet, denim, silk, cool wool and cotton poplin. His main canvas was embellishments, pocking surfaces of coats, the groin of trousers, and the plackets of denim jackets. Riveted elements played a great measure, while harmonizing atop a pointed-toe, Cuban-heeled Mexican and cowboy boots. GIVENCHY Plaza Indonesia, L1 # 67 - 7A, Jakarta. Tel. +62 21 29923695

LA PRAIRIE The Essence of Caviar
For centuries, caviar has been known to be a magical source of dense, rich nutrients. Scarce and coveted, caviar is a precious ingredient, sought after for its prestige, and for its power to enrich and regenerate skin. More than 25 years ago, La Prairie journeyed to the depths of the sea to capture precious caviar beads and harness their rare restorative powers. The result was the wonder of Skin Caviar, created with potent ingredients from caviar. The phenomenon of caviar, at the heart La Prairie’s iconic collection, is today reinterpreted in a new, delicate and luxurious way. For the first time ever, La Prairie scientists have used a perfected steam distillation process to capture caviar components in a pure and crystal-clear, active fluid. Whereas classic lotions contain regular water, Skin Caviar Essence-inLotion is made with exclusive caviar water, the distillate obtained through the steam distillation of caviar beads. This technique allows a different blend of components rather than the ones obtained from a classic extraction. Thus giving rare complements of caviar extract: its firming and lifting benefits. Skin Caviar Essence-in-Lotion enhances the skin’s tone and helps to immediately improve skin’s hydration and elasticity, offering women a new exquisite experience. The treatment lotion also features La Prairie’s
74
extraordinary cellular complex. This proprietary complex has been at the heart of each La Prairie skincare formulation for four decades, providing nutrients, energizing factors and age-fighting ingredients that help with age delaying, moisture retention, and revitalizing dull skin. Skin Caviar Essence-in-Lotion is the ultimate indulgence to firm and lift skin for a suppler and smoother skin. Skin Caviar Essence-in-Lotion is the quintessential new call for skin’s beauty. Developed to be the prime step of the skincare treatment regimen before applying serum, Skin Caviar Essence-in-Lotion breaks the codes of skincare lotions. Leaving the skin refined, firmer and perfectly moisturized, it is the new prerequisite of the daily ritual for an increased performance of the routine. Soft as silk and rich in caviar water, Skin Caviar Essence-inLotion is the missing link to the ultimate skincare experience. Over the years, Skin Caviar’s iconic collection has offered women a perfect fusion of Swiss science innovation and luxury ingredients. With Skin Caviar Essence-in-Lotion, a light and fresh yet powerful infusion, La Prairie celebrates its most iconic beauty collection with a new caviar wonder. This reinterpretation of caviar marks La Prairie’s passion and commitment to deliver the most exclusive and innovative skincare in the world.

BVLGARI
A Metaphor of the Golden Age
Goldea is an invitation to an exceptional olfactory journey, drawn from the imagination of a perfumer-jeweller and nourished by the history of the world and its treasures. The passionate relationship that goddesses or contemporary divas have always had with gold and the snake, the other talisman in Bulgari’s poems of metal, stones and fragrances. A manifesto of Bulgari’s style, Goldea sparks off the innovative scented emotions of a floral-oriental capturing and reflecting light and the velvety caress of sun-warmed skin. A tribute to the ultimate icon of light, sensuality and gold in history, literature and cinema for over 2000 years: Cleopatra. The extraordinarily precious nature of the musks of Goldea and their regal, sensual, luminous aura mirror those of gold. This game of reflections and multiplied echoes between olfactory matter and precious matter are the very essence of Goldea. Since the dawn of time, gold is
76
the subject of dreams, myths and legends, however, it was the Egyptians who gave it the mystical dimension, seeing it as an embodiment of the sun, metal equivalent of Ra. Also, embodying the eye of Ra open on the sky, offering protection against all the forces of evil, is the upright Cobra. Far from the snake’s bad reputation in Genesis, all civilisations – from China to Egypt, including Ancient Greece and Rome – have used it as a symbol of wisdom, strength and eternity, and the attribute of Aphrodite. The scent expresses and awakens intense and sensual amber blend and floral sensations. They recall the flamboyant, iridescent boldness of the gems – sometimes similar to pralines or to sugar crystals – which Bulgari hunts throughout the world. With head notes of a sublime radiant top of solar crystal musk, heart notes of a magnificent floral heart of sublime addictive musk and base notes of a trail of pleasure with royal ambery musk.

The bottle that contains Goldea is a true manifesto in which Bulgari has chosen to assert its identity of a jeweller-perfumer. The cabochon shaped bottle top recalls the myths of divine creation that have celebrated the sun since ancient Egyptian times. Symbolising the sun’s rays reaching Earth with the
abundance they give rise to, the golden ring enhanced with scales which encircles the bottle top also features the snake that Bulgari, with the Serpenti jewels, has turned into an iconic motif which now takes its place within the universe of its perfumes.

The active ingredients of ginseng saponin exist only in a miniscule amount in ginseng plants, and are not easily extractable. When ginseng is administered orally, ginseng saponin is converted to active ingredients through interaction with digestive enzymes in the body. However, when ginseng is applied to the skin, the absence of desired enzymes makes it difficult to unlock the full potential of ginseng. Sulwhasoo developed the world’s first Bioconversion Technology™, which converts ginseng saponin into anti-aging active ingredients through interaction with enzymes, to deliver Compound K, anti-aging active ingredient, to the
deeper layers of the skin. This latest version comes in two variants to choose from according to tastes and skin conditions – ConcentratedGinseng Renewing Cream EX Original and Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Cream EX Light. Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Cream EX Original efficiently boosts positive energy through nutrition-rich texture and profound ginseng scent. Retaining the existing spring travel of 115 millimetres in each case, it was possible to create a more comfortable suspension set-up. Based on the “Safety 360°” principle,
the optimum design of the brake system in conjunction with the standard BMW Motorrad ABS Bosch 9.1MB ensures the very highest level of active riding safety. SOORI BALI Seaside Luxurious Resort
Soori Bali offers elegant, contemporary villas set on the edge of the ocean between the Batu Karu Mountain and terraced rice fields, Soori Bali is a hidden refuge, rejuvenating and peaceful; it is Bali as it should be. Designed, owned and operated by renowned architect Soo K. Chan and his wife Ling Fu, the resort prioritises environmental and cultural sustainability. Crafted out of local materials, Soori Bali maintains a true sense of place. Keeping things pure, its restaurants use fresh produce from nearby farms and spices from its own garden; the resort’s spa uses only the highest quality organic products. Six years after its debut as the Alila Villas Soori, a seaside resort designed and owned by renowned architect Soo K. Chan, is coming out from under the
98
Alila umbrella as an anchor in a new luxury lifestyle brand. Situated in Bali’s Tabanan Regency, between a black sand volcanic beach, towering Mount Batukaru and UNESCO-protected rice terraces, the resort today opens its doors for business as Soori Bali. A cantilevered 100-seat platform designed for special events, perched atop a cliff jutting out into the Indian Ocean, as well as a vast wedding lawn overlooking a peninsular and an Indonesian specialty restaurant set amid rice fields are among new features to be added to Soori Bali in the lead-up to the resort’s official grand opening in spring 2017. All of Soori Bali’s 48 villas and residences will undergo upgrades, including reroofing and the installation of new AV equipment and air conditioning

systems, while staff members have been retained under a new management team. Soo Chan said Soori Bali’s award-winning architecture drew inspiration from the local landscape and working villages, with the resort crafted out of stone from nearby village quarries and adorned with terracotta and other ceramic ornaments from local artisans. “I’ve designed hotels and resorts around the globe and yet with Soori Bali I’ve made all of the decisions and the result is the most honest of my creations,” he said. “For me, Soori Bali is as
much a state of mind as it is a world-class resort; it’s a peaceful, private and re-energising place.” Dotted with temples and positioned with respect for ancestral ritual pathways running through its grounds, Soo Chan also described the ecologically sustainable, EarthCheck-certified resort as “spiritually-charged”. Soori Bali joins Soori High Line, a luxury residence in New York City’s West Chelsea, and Soori Niseko, a forthcoming ski resort in Japan.

Fazioli has never stopped developing and designing new collection, with quality growing simultaneously with aesthetic value. Their latest collection includes “Marco Polo” and “Fairmont”. “Marco Polo” shows an unusual red varnish and a precious reproduction of a Canaletto painting represent the combination chosen for this F308 named
“Marco Polo”, which celebrates the ancient connection between Venice and China: the client’s country. Commissioned by an important hotel in Vancouver, the Fazioli Piano “Fairmont” was designed by a team of renowned architects as follows: McFarlane / Green / Biggar. The white colored instrument distinguishes itself thanks to the elaborate tridimensional incision, made of walnut wood, located on the internal side of the lid.

MICHIKO OGAWA The Woman of Sound
Panasonic recently unveiled the revival of its Technics brand to music aficionados in Indonesia. Technics is the iconic highend audio brand, well known for its accurate reproduction of original sound, especially among music lovers around the world. Targeting the premium market, Jakarta has been chosen as the first city in the Asian region for the brand’s re-launch event. This delightful announcement was delivered directly by Michiko Ogawa, Director of the Technics project in the Home Entertainment Business Division of Panasonic. In collaboration with Panasonic Indonesia for this special occasion, Ogawa intentionally introduced the first new Technics hi-fi products, which are the new Technics hi-fi systems, the R1 ReferenceClass System and the C700 Premium-Class System. Ogawa, a former Technics audio engineer and also a famous jazz pianist in Japan, explained that the new products are based on a concept called the ‘Technics Definitive Sound’, which builds upon decades of audio technology development and know-how. The concept is comprised of three major technical elements: Accurate Digital Technology, Noiseless Signal Technology and Emotive Acoustic Technology. It was obvious from this re-launch event that Panasonic is still the worldwide leader in the development and engineering of electronics technologies and solutions. All of the new Technics components offer artistic technological twists that combine the magical and emotional relationship between people, music and technology. Showing their commitment to pursuing new value through innovation, Technics takes people to experience music as it was originally intended and enable them to feel the emotional impact that enthuses and amuse them. Meeting the needs of music lovers worldwide, Technics supports the music industry through their vast high-resolution audio technology that delivers the utmost emotive musical experience by music lovers, for music lovers. As a musician and also a key figure on the classical jazz scene in Japan, Ogawa and her team in Technics have clearly set the vision and mission of what Technics wants to achieve based on the philosophy that Technics wants to deliver to the world. “Through the new Technics products we are striving to offer listeners the feeling of ‘rediscovering music’, by helping them to have such uniquely emotionally-engaging experiences – ones that we seem to have lost”, said Ogawa explaining the meaning behind the Technics’ new slogan of “Rediscover Music”. Graduated from the Science and Technology Department at Keio University, one of the top universities in Japan carrying out world-class research, Ogawa has set a clear vision about what she wants to achieve in life. Inspired by Mr. Konosuke Matsushita, Panasonic Founder, she directly joined the Panasonic
106
Acoustic Research Laboratory after her graduation. As part of the research team, this exceptional lady had been involved in many planned, researched and developed technologies for the commercialization of audio equipment. In 1988, she was a team member that developed the world’s first ultra-slim, largediaphragm speaker, the Technics AFP1000, which has continued to be used by the Vienna State Opera. She was also involved in developing the SST-1 backload horn-type speaker system that is currently displayed as the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. For the past 30 years with Panasonic Corporation, she has already appointed to several different positions and assumed many important roles. Ogawa was one of the members that set the standard of the DVD-Audio format, which is the root of high resolution music, and the technology and know-how acquired at that time are currently used by Technics. She has also completed many Network Services between the Panasonic Audio Visual devices with the Internet infrastructure, including the development of the Photo Cloud Service for Panasonic LUMIX digital cameras and the Internet TV. More than that, she has taken charge of several Panasonic CSR programs around the world, including the Eco Activities and the Panasonic 100 thousand Solar Lanterns project. Currently, as Director of the Technics project, Michiko Ogawa is responsible for the growth strategies of the business, as well as the entire marketing process, starting from the branding and promotion, all the way to the sales. On top of her busy activities, music remains at the centre of everything she does. Ogawa still actively engages with several jazz music communities in Japan, including the Kansai Jazz Association. Every now and then, she performs as a solo jazz pianist at some prestigious events. Talking about music especially jazz always excites Ogawa, who admires Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and for sure the great jazz pianist Art Tatum. She frankly admits that her love for music complements her knowledge and interest in Natural Science and Technology. Despite all of her successful achievements, Ogawa remains humble, truthful and respectful to others, and is always ready to embrace the changes that life has to offer. She is a devoted wife to her loving husband and always keeps communicating deeply with him. Ogawa and her husband enjoy travelling around the world. Together, they have already visited Florence in Italy, Ubud Village in Bali, and many other historic places. Ogawa is a genuinely multi talented lady. Underneath her classic elegant look, there lies the mind of an experienced, tough and expert businesswoman. It is apparent that her career and her love for music have risen to a great standard of a modern Asian woman at the turn of the twenty first century.
