The Woman with The Golden Touch

COVER STORY

The journey of Naomi Julia Soegianto as a founder and CEO of NJS Gold, a gold jewelry manufacturer based in Surabaya, Indonesia, was not an easy nor straightforward process. 25 years ago, she found herself thrust into the world of business after the passing of her father, Thomas Soegianto, who in 1981 had founded and established one of Indonesia’s current biggest Gold Jewelry Manufacturer businesses.

Unlike her father, Naomi needed to express her learning curve and learn the industry furthermore in order to follow in her father’s footsteps and to continue the direction and path of his dream of manufacturing high quality luxury jewelry for the local Indonesian and external global markets.

Overcoming the challenges of being a minority woman in a male-dominated industry, she succeeded in developing her company, NJS Gold jewelry manufacturer, into one of rapidly growing manufacturers in Indonesia. After starting out in the business with less knowledge than her father, Naomi was pulled out of her accounting life as a working mom and instead was inspired and forced to learn the gold business.

Being the bread and butter of many employees, Naomi felt an instant need to somehow pull through and run the business. Naomi saw this opportunity as a challenge to be conquered and she knew that she had to make it work. With that determination in mind, she set out to do just that. It was a difficult road, but Naomi’s perseverance and hard work paid off.

Naomi’s inception into the industry initially started out as a wholesaler with the connections and the legacy built through her father. After some more years in learning the art of the trade, she then continued by starting dwelling deeper into manufacturing. Coming in with minimal business experience at this level, she quickly learned the ropes of the industry until she managed to successfully start her own jewelry shop.

What was even more remarkable was that she had done it while leaving what she thought was her career calling in life which was to be a university & school lecturer. But, as it turned out, divine intervention had other plans for Naomi, as she found her true passion in the jewelry business. This seemingly complicated business did not come easy for Naomi, and in fact it took her over 20 years in perfecting her skills before she could reach a level of this caliber.

Today, Naomi is involved in every aspect of her business, from the initial design process to the manufacturing and delivery process including the strategic planning and luxury design concepts she reviews daily to continue the development of her business success and product quality. She oversees every step of the way and enjoys every single one of them. Naomi feels a great sense of satisfaction whenever her well thought out products do well in the market. This gives her more confidence for future growth and makes her enjoy her work even more.

COVER STORY

The Covid-19 pandemic proved to be a major challenge for many businesses, but for Naomi and her company, NJS Gold, it turned out to be a big leap forward. With constant marketing efforts, people began to see that NJS Gold was a company that could be trusted. By instilling a sense of belonging with the employees and staff as well, the company was able to grow at a massive scale mainly during the pandemic. Naomi’s focus in this business is to continue the growth of the company and continue to be an inspiration for all the people working for her.

Her philanthropic efforts also cannot go unnoticed as one of her passions is still to help people around her, including accommodating a retirement home and regularly donating to charities for people with disabilities. Naomi Julia Soegianto’s journey is an inspiration to anyone who wants to turn their passion into a successful business. With determination, hard work, and a willingness to face any challenge, anything is possible.

In the wake of the investment boom the past couple of years, as a jeweler, Naomi still follows the train of thought that recommends gold to be a safe haven for long term investment and she is confident that this will remain the case in the future. She also feels that gold is in fact a liquid asset and is a good way to keep your money intact to save yourself from inflation. When looking at it historically, gold has maintained an exponential rise for many years. Just like NJS Gold, Naomi is confident that the precious metal is still a favorite for many people.

As one of the few women in the industry, Naomi has even bigger plans for her company. Keeping in mind that NJS Gold has always been using the best quality materials in their production, with new management systems and sophisticated machineries, the company is nowhere near slowing down. By being an advocate for girls around the country, Naomi’s message to other women out there is to never feel weak in times of diversity and instead stand up to those challenges being put in front of you.

Throughout her journey, Naomi has learned that the jewelry industry is not just about creating beautiful pieces of art – it’s about so much more. It’s about perseverance and the determination to succeed and to come out on the other side as a stronger, more successful person.

NJS Gold is a company that you can trust and Naomi as a leader is not just a woman but also a strong leader who overcomes challenges and continuously brings her company to the next level.

CHOPARD

My Happy Hearts

Chopard has introduced a brand-new jewelry collection called My Happy Hearts, a collection that embodies the love and power of self-care. My Happy Hearts is a unique collection of jewelry that is meant to be worn as intimate and subtle lingerie, a symbol of an emancipated generation and a reinvented relationship with oneself. The collection is a declaration of independence, a way of giving yourself the means to blossom.

The collection is a sign of self-love, portrayed in delicate jewelry that can be purchased on a whim. Whether to congratulate, thank, encourage yourself or simply to feel alive, treating yourself to a piece of jewelry is a testimony to the respect and love you have for yourself.

Worn alone, each piece of jewelry in the My Happy Hearts collection becomes a minimalist version that accentuates a chic and minimalistic style. The small size of each piece allows for endless mix-and-match possibilities, with different models and colors to match your moods, outfits, emotions or the whims of the seasons. The discreet and delicate nature of My Happy Hearts leaves room for infinite combinations, and accumulating them is like building an intimate narrative, each piece of jewelry becoming an object of symbolic investment.

My Happy Hearts jewelry is like precious skin lingerie, a sensual link between you and yourself. It is a way of enhancing your figure, much like a designer handbag or a pair of luxury pumps. The jewelry is slender, discreet, and “kawaii,” and it becomes an element that gives density to even the simplest outfit. They are faithful companions that accompany you from Pilates sessions to flamboyant parties.

The heart is an iconic Chopard symbol that is present in all its collections, from Haute Joaillerie to watches and accessories. My Happy Hearts is a manifesto dedicated to tenderness, to gentleness in a sometimes rough world. The heart symbolizes vitality and peace and in contemporary graphic language, is loved for its electricity, humor, tenderness, and ability to immediately arouse collective support.

My Happy Hearts jewelry is crafted from ethical 18-carat rose gold and features a carnelian or mother-of-pearl heart. The rings and earrings in the collection are also available with a dancing diamond. The heart, free-spinning diamond, and ornamental stone are all iconic Chopard codes, staging a vibrant and powerful show. Carnelian conjures up a passionate and incandescent symbolic field, while mother-of-pearl wraps the spirit in a comforting presence.

JAEGER-LECOULTRE

New Collection Pays Tribute to Asian Artistic Traditions and Nature

Jaeger-LeCoultre has released three new watches in the RendezVous Sonatina ‘Peaceful Nature’ series. The watches are a joyful ode to nature and its special place in the Asian artistic tradition. They are deeply imbued with traditional Oriental symbolism and showcase some of the timeless crafts of Jaeger-LeCoultre Métiers Rares® atelier: lacquer work, miniature-painting and gem-setting.

The watches are an exquisite and feminine expression of time that celebrates both precision and artistry. The watches unite Eastern and Western artistic traditions, linking the richness of rare decorative crafts with the technical sophistication of high watchmaking. The use of lacquer, with its incomparable translucence and rich lustre, draws on deep links

between Asian craft and European style. An ancient craft, of which the first known examples date back to the end of the Neolithic period, urushi lacquer was first brought from Asia to the West in the 16th century. Highly prized for its precious appearance and exotic origins, it has had a profound impact on European art and taste ever since.

Plants and animals have always been highly symbolic in Asian cultures, imbued with special powers and attributes, and scenes from nature play an important role in Asian art history. The watch’s designers and Métiers Rares® artists have interpreted this tradition on the dials of the new timepieces, uniting the crafts of lacquer work, miniature-painting and gem-setting with consummate skill.

The first watch, Peaceful Nature – Crane, has a background of deep blue-green lacquer with a crane hovering above a pine tree. In Asian cultures, a crane is revered as an auspicious sign and symbolizes happiness, a soaring spirit and longevity. The pine tree, as an evergreen, is also considered a symbol of longevity and virtue. The second watch, Peaceful Nature – Kingfisher, has a goldenbrown dial adorned with the delicately painted branches of a red quince tree. The kingfisher is a positive symbol in almost every cultural tradition and represents beauty, virtue, fidelity, devotion, faithfulness, and happy marriage. The third watch, Peaceful Nature – Koi, has a black dial with a vivid orange-coloured koi swimming beneath the gently rippling surface of a pond, framed by the spreading branches of a willow tree. The willow tree is a symbol of spring and romance, and the koi symbolizes strength of purpose, courage, and perseverance, bringing the rewards of success, abundance, and good fortune.

The new watches are a tour-de-force of skill, artistry, and infinite patience, executed entirely by hand in the Jaeger-LeCoultre Métiers Rares® atelier. They celebrate femininity in refined and timeless style and are a must-have for any watch collector or lover of nature.

MB&F X EMMANUEL TARPIN

Join Forces for WinterInspired Legacy Machine FlyingT Models”

MB&F and French jewelry designer Emmanuel Tarpin have collaborated to create two limited edition Legacy Machine FlyingT models inspired by winter landscapes called Ice and Blizzard that are limited to only eight pieces each. The 30-year-old Emmanuel Tarpin is known for his unique pieces that blend his love for nature, sculpture, innovative materials and gemstones. The collaboration takes the wintery theme inspired by his favorite season and the landscapes he encountered while traveling between his hometown of Annecy to Geneva.

The Ice model features diamond set stalagmites that encroach the sapphire crystal dome and movement with asymmetrical design, each one unique like natural ice formations. It was inspired by Tarpin’s trip to Lake Baikal in Siberia during winter. Similar to the first one, the Blizzard model was inspired by Tarpin’s ski experiences in the Alps. Brilliant-cut diamonds are placed under the sapphire crystal dome to resemble snowflakes on the ground and closed-set diamonds are set into the matt lapis lazuli dial, creating a dynamic snow globe effect. The movement of the FlyingT is designed in such a way that only the owner can see the time, adding to its intimate, refined touch.

MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser shares that getting someone like Tarpin on board for a collaboration this huge is in fact a big step for the Swiss watch company. Having already met before while Tarpin was studying at Geneva’s Haute école d›art et de design (HEAD), Tarpin›s name popped up as an up-and-coming jewelry designer to watch which resulted in a collaboration.

Having only ever collaborated once before, with renowned Italian luxury brand Bulgari, this second collaboration aims to go far beyond the realm of complicated feminine jewelry watches by highlighting two visions of the world and two different interpretations of creativity that are in different forms. This collaboration essentially allowed Tarpin to put his artistry and jewelry into the FlyingT, much like giving a blank canvas to an artist. It showcases Tarpin›s unique vision and creativity as a jewelry designer and MB&F›s mastery as a watchmaker.

VALENTINO Spring Summer 2023 Collection Celebrates Individuality

The Paris Fashion Week that took place between 26 September 2022 and 4 October 2022 saw many brands stepping far from the boundaries of fashion. Returning with a touch of minimalism while focusing on the essentials, Valentino’s collection proved how getting rid of the unnecessary can in fact turn heads. Curated by the brand’s creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli, the collection entitled UNBOXING was designed to evoke feelings of freedom, positivity, and empowerment, with an emphasis on color, texture, and comfort.

Looking towards purity, the collection focuses on truly what is essential and enters into a more minimalistic era. As the unofficial entry into iconography, Valentino’s attention to detail does not go unnoticed. Featuring the warehouse that was redone with a black floor and black benches, press releases as well as invites put in simple black boxes, and welcoming audio being a simple dripping tap.

The co-ed collection also put into consideration the maximalism approach as a juxtaposition to the whole minimalist vibe. With accessories playing a significant role, statement earrings, chunky necklaces, and oversized bracelets add an extra touch of style and flair to the outfits. The fashion house also fully embraced logomania and put their monogram everywhere, on coats with trains, dresses, as well the trimmed coats with carefully placed feathers. Making logomania a norm of 2022, Valentino has decided to go all in.

After last season’s punch of pink, this collection takes away all packaging and gets to the essence. Some might even go as far as saying that this collection was an echo of Martin Margiela’s work in the 80s where he made investigations into anonymity and found ways to amplify the sense of identity through a blank canvas. However, Piccioli’s work was made with a more present day and modern fashion mindset.

LOUIS VUITTON

Spring-Summer 2023 Women’s

Femininity is at the center of Louis Vuitton’s latest collection, and the fashion house is joining the conversation by highlighting its complexity and magnifying it through their spring-summer 2023 women’s collection. Oversized accessories are what’s hot and Louis Vuitton is doing just that by putting outcasts on a pedestal. Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquiere, uses a stylistic exercise that re-evaluates the proportions of clothing and accessories, with the codes of femininity unsettling scale. The large and the small come together on silhouettes, inviting a closer examination. The collection focuses on the details, highlighting their significance and giving them their due in the Maison’s DNA. From locks and labels to clasps, buckles and zippers, these elements serve as the custodians of Louis Vuitton’s story and are integral to the collection’s narrative.

Guest designer Philippe Parreno’s artistic creativity was nothing short of innovative and genius. The man who was responsible for the show’s scenography created a circus-like installation, “monster-flower” that serves as a metaphor for the collection’s emphasis on

femininity. Blossoming at the very heart of the collection, this symbolizes the intricacies and complexities of femininity. The “monster-flower” is a pulsating entity, reflecting the dynamic nature of femininity and the endless proportions of clothing and accessories.

Equipped with an accounting degree and little knowledge of the hospitality industry, Samit -tenaciously looking for opportunities- stumbled upon a training program with the Oberoi Hotels, an award-winning luxury hotel group steeped in history. He went all in! Realizing this was an opportunity to learn, network, and level up.

A natural communicator with a sharp mind combined with a warm & welcoming personality, Samit decided early on to focus only on the process and not worry about the result. Amid this passage, he began to see himself advancing in this industry of service, charm, and luxury that was, bit by bit, capturing his heart & imagination—pushing him to absorb every little detail of the program and make the most out of his experience here.

Samit knew that to get to the top of the industry with the background that he came from was not easy, and he took this as a challenge. Having a complete switch of career path and moving to the hospitality industry right after an MBA degree and is something that Samit did not expect to do, however he has managed to keep that fire even years later, a fuel uninterrupted by the challenges that now see him managing Westin Jakarta.

Arriving in Jakarta in 2012, Samit quickly realized the potential of the city and its people. Resorting to good old-fashioned hard work, He promptly rolled up his sleeves and identified the gaps in the market he was ordained for, starting with his first stint as Sales & Operations at the Ritz Carlton Pacific Place. Soon, ripe in the unfolding uncertainty of the pandemic, he was tasked with managing the Hyatt Phuket, where, despite the lockdown, he never missed a beat. Ensured that guests were treated impeccably, operational standards were maintained and worked creatively to ensure that the five-star experience would stand the test and blossom long after.

This work ethic and passion wouldn’t go unnoticed, and soon the Marriot group beckoned and offered him the chance to return to Indonesia and take the helm of the Westin Jakarta. Here, Inspired by the warmth of the Indonesian people and based on the value of Westins’ 6 pillars of wellbeing: “Feel well”, “Work well”, “Move well”, “Eat well”, “Sleep well”, “Play well”. He set out to catapult the Westin brand to be the destination for Luxury experience seekers in Indonesia. ‘The wholistic awareness’ as he put it.

Samit notes that the Indonesian & Indian hospitality industry is set apart by the positive attitude towards change and trying new things, highlighting that the ‘staycations’ was a cornerstone of the industry, keeping the drive

alive during the trials of the pandemic. When asked what keeps him going in such a turbulent industry, he replied: “I see myself as a rainmaker, not a farmer waiting for rain.’

Samit continues to push the boundaries, accepting nothing less than perfection from himself and his peers. He advises the younger generation looking to enter this particular industry that faith in the industry needs to be maintained and that one should redeem their hard work later. In an industry that demands the individual to make things happen and come equipped with a range of skillset varying from operational to managerial, ‘we need to be constantly one step ahead to anticipate the daily challenges while keeping up with the latest trends and innovations of this dynamic industry.

‘a spy job’ is what Samit would have pursued if a career in top-level hospitality management was not destined for him. Yet, with a blend of good spirit and determination - mixed with his motto of ‘it doesn’t cost you money to smile,’- defeated all odds.

He continues to re-invent himself & consistently creates a memorable experience for everyone who enters the Westin doors. He hopes his dedication leaves a definitive mark on the industry beyond his tenure.

GONTRAN CHERRIER

Bringing The Warmth of Paris to The Streets of Jakarta

World renowned Artisan Boulanger, Gontran Cherrier, since opening his first ever outlet in Jakarta shows no signs of slowing down with more on its way. As you walk in the store located in the heart of Senopati area, you’re immediately welcomed by the smell of fresh baked breads, reminding you of the same feeling like being curled up in a blanket on a cold rainy day.

The well reputed bakery hailing all the way from Paris, France keeps its interior similar throughout its multiple outlets all over the world. With characteristics reminiscent of modern-classic Parisian vibes, Gontran Cherrier embraces their French roots by serving their classic croissant with a twist. Made up of crisp layers complete with soft and buttery insides and a perfect crunchy texture, you’ll want to devour each bite until the very last crumb.

Gontran Cherrier himself has worked alongside a multitude of Michelin-starred chefs and traveled all over the globe discovering different ingredients and culinary traditions to bring original flavors to his bakeries.

Mr. Michaël Blin (Executive Chef)

At the helm of it all is Chef Michaël Blin, the Executive Bakery Chef of Gontran Cherrier Jakarta who has worked with the franchise for 7 years now. Coming from a family of bakers who still as of now have a bakery in his hometown of Paris, Chef Michaël started out his career immediately following his parents footsteps by making pastries in their own bakery. Having honed his skills further in Ecole de Boulangerie et de Pâtisserie de Paris, Chef Michaël was in fact the student of Chef Gontran himself in 2003 until he finally came on board to join the Gontran Cherrier family in 2015 leading the bakeries all over Asia.

Having first been placed in South Korea, followed by Taiwan, and then Thailand for the last 3 years before heading to Jakarta, Chef Michaël enjoys the warmth of the city as well as its people. He also thinks that living in a metropolitan city like Jakarta is more than enjoyable due to the experimental nature of the people and their sweet tooth, along with their willingness to constantly try new things.

In the stores in Indonesia, Chef Michaël fully recommends the Golden Macadamia which is a salted caramel and macadamia croissant textured with crunchy macadamia nuts. Distinctly traditional-looking on the outside, the appetizing golden treat is bound to win you over with its subtle sweetness but distinct salted caramel topping.

SIDIK W. MARTOWIDJOJO Journey to Wisdom

The Museum Nasional in Jakarta recently hosted a solo art exhibition by the Indonesian painter, Sidik W. Martowidjojo (also known as Ma Yong Qiang) from September 29th to October 27th, 2022. The exhibition, entitled “Journey to Wisdom,” featured 48 of Sidik’s works. Through this theme Sidik explores a message about humanity and always being wise as well as to love nature and the universe so as to create sustainability for the sake of the children and grandchildren in the future. The overall theme of the exhibition encourages viewers to be more mindful of the environment and our responsibilities to future generations.

Sidik is an accomplished artist whose works have received national and

international recognition. He has received various awards from institutions such as Louvre International Art in France and the National Art Museum of China. In addition to his Jakarta exhibition, Sidik has his own museum in Yogyakarta called the Museum SIDIK, where his works are showcased.

Sidik’s unique painting style blends elements of traditional Chinese and Japanese art with modern techniques. His brushstrokes are spontaneous and convey a sense of energy and spirit, giving his paintings a unique character that is easily recognizable. Sidik’s inspiration comes from nature, and his works often depict mountains, rivers, trees, and other natural elements. Sidik W. Martowidjojo is truly a figure of a very proud Indonesian

citizen and is one of the nation’s assets that gives color and pride for Indonesia.

Standing in front of Sidik’s paintings feels like reciting or meditating in his Buddhist language, or Zen in his Chinese or Japanese traditions. When we are in front of a large, intact painting of Sidik, we will see streaks of extraordinary energy (chi), a soul, a spirit that is always passionate. The brush strokes are very strong, with a distinctive character. You can imagine that when he is painting, it feels like he is dancing, being spontaneous, releasing an overflowing energy. When Sidik paints, he enjoys the process, as he himself admits. Sidik’s work is indeed more appropriate for meditation, to see overflows of natural energy, to feel calm, or in complete harmony. His inspiration comes from nature: mountains, trees, rivers, water.

Sidik seems to combine at least four combinations that we can see from each of the

paintings. The first is definitely China. The brush, the energy, the spontaneity, the spirit, everything is Chinese. This is consistent with the philosophy of Taoism, sometimes also Confucianism. This can be felt in Sidik’s paintings.

The second element is the Javanese element which is loud in every painting. It is true that his way of painting is Chinese, the way he strokes his brush, shakes his hands, or his philosophy of harmony is inspired by Chinese characters, Chinese painting techniques. But Sidik’s Javaneseness is clearly seen in his paintings. Indeed, Java and China have one thing in common, namely harmony. Both China and Java have always followed nature. Nature rules, we follow. This is why Sidik Martowidjojo’s painting with large and small strokes is unique.

The third element is the Western element. This Western element can be seen from how Sidik impurely followed China by using paper, bamboo, making one incision and then permeating the membranes. It can be seen that Sidik has a background in art education in the West, about perspective, about realism, about form, and the basics of color which are not Chinese but Western. But Sidik adds his own interpretation of the painting.

Adding to this is the last element, the religious element of Islam. The influence of Islam is also present in Sidik’s work. Sidik has gone through many ages. During the Dutch era, the Japanese era, the busy era of Indonesia, there were revolutions in the era of Pak Karno, the era of Pak Harto, and the reformation era. Sidik’s paintings have certainly matured through various eras, through various traditions, so they are full of meaning.

The nature that Sidik paints implies harmony. Return to nature, meditate in nature, contemplate under a tree, see flowing water, see towering mountains, look within. All of this is recorded in Sidik Martowidjojo’s paintings.

I WAYAN SUDARSANA YANSEN

Explore Paint with An Intuitive Flow

Indonesian artist Yansen, also known as I Wayan Sudarsana Yansen, is a creative force to be reckoned with. His paintings are known for their unexpected and often startling visual forms, making him stand out from other artists who adopt more conventional methods. His distinctive style is a result of his innovative approach to painting, which is a testament to his total commitment to his craft. His paintings embody the energy and life of the colors, and the way the paint flows over the canvas creates a three-dimensional room of imaginative formation. Yansen’s paintings are not just visually stunning, but they also offer a unique and personal experience for the audience. His artwork is a form of meditation, where the media is color and canvas, and every moment is captured and frozen in time.

The process of creating one of Yansen’s paintings starts with priming a loose sheet of canvas fabric with a technique called ‘plastis’. This technique allows the surface to absorb

the oil paints that will be used in the painting. Unlike other artists who stretch the canvas and frame it, Yansen’s canvas remains unframed and is positioned on a flat horizontal surface.

Once the canvas is primed, Yansen begins the painting process by pouring a mixture of colorful or monochromatic oil paints onto the canvas. He then uses his hands and fingers to control the flow of the fluid paint by gripping the edges of the canvas and moving it around until the canvas is filled with paint. This process requires precision and coordination to avoid paint spillage, as Yansen aims to steer the liquid paint in the direction that he intends.

The movement of the fluid paint over the canvas is a spectacle in itself, as the paint flows and drips in an organic and natural way. The blending of the different colors creates a new and unique color palette that embodies an energy and life of its own. Yansen’s hands play the role of a master and choreographer, as he adds drops of color where and when he feels compelled to.

Yansen’s paintings are shaped and built solely from the flow of paint, which moves dynamically until it reaches its stopping point. Some of the paint may be absorbed by the pores of the canvas, while others may be stopped by design. The resulting forms are visually stunning, with the trickling of paint surf creating an appearance of movement and energy. The flows of paint that intersect and fill each other in are reminiscent of a frozen liquid effect, and the colors that emerge from these collisions are truly captivating.
