This year marks the 68th anniversary of Indonesia-Italy bilateral relations and the 38th for the presence of ITA office in Indonesia. “And there has been a growing awareness of the economic opportunities in both trade and investment here in Indonesia,” says Dr. Alessandro Liberatori, the director of Italian Trade Agency (ITA) in Jakarta, a government organisation that also functions as Trade Promotion Office of the Italian Embassy. “This world’s largest archipelago is indeed a home to vast natural resources; and with fast-growing domestic market, it is no surprise that foreign investors, including those from Italy, are eyeing Indonesia as a lucrative investment destination.” Over an afternoon tea in his Jakarta’s office, Mr. Liberatori also praises the hard work of Indonesia towards increasing the competitiveness and improvement of business environment in the country. “Important steps forward have been done in providing economic opportunities for companies from various industries including foreign investors but there is still ground for further improvement!” asserts Mr. Liberatori who is serving the current position since November 2015. Prior to his appointment in Jakarta, he was posted at the ITA Headquarters in Rome and had been the director of ITA in Croatia for five years. As for the economic and trade relations between Indonesia and Italy, Mr. Liberatori further asserts, “Our two economies are more complementary than competitive and we have never been so close as in the past couple of years.” His assertion is evidenced by a number of events; among others were the visit of President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella in November 2015 and the official mission in May 2017 of the Italian Minister of Economic Development Carlo Calenda. Mr. Calenda also attended in an important Italian-ASEAN Economic Forum in Jakarta, which saw the participation of over hundred of Italian companies. Other event worth mentioning was the recent visit of Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Mrs. Retno Marsudi, to Italy at the beginning of October. For 2018 the Italian Government has already identified Indonesia as one of the three focus countries in which to carry out a large cross-sector economic and trade mission. “We have more in our agenda various events, about 40, that have the potential to strengthen bilateral ties in trade and investment between Indonesia and Italy, including, just to mention one, our upcoming trade show in Rimini, Italy called SIGEP-The Sweetest business experience,” Mr. Liberatori says. Sigep is an international trade show featuring artisan gelato, pastry, bakery and coffee sectors. To be held on 2024 January 2018, this annual event will be the 38th. “We are inviting a number of selected Indonesian companies and media to attend this exhibition, the most important in the

world” he adds. The goal is to introduce what we can offer to Indonesian companies that are importers of machinery and ingredients for gelato, pastry, chocolate, coffee and bread; as well as those owners of chain ice cream, bakeries and coffee shops. We are also launching an In-Store promotion of Italian Food & Beverages in cooperation with Ranch Market, to be held in 23 stores across Indonesia from 17 to 26 November 2017 on the occasion of the Week of the Italian Cuisine in the World. Mr. Liberatori also adds that besides the F&B and consumer goods industry, the trade from Italy accounts for about 70 per cent, including advanced technology and machinery, both of which are Italy’s largest exporting and operating industries in Indonesia. “I see that Indonesia is currently undergoing numerous projects, including infrastructure, energy, health care and technology developments; and we really hope that more companies from Italy, the second largest manufacturing country in Europe and the eight largest exporter in the world, can contribute to these developments. We believe that these developments will make Indonesia stronger as South East Asia’s largest economy.” Nearly having a stint in Jakarta for two years, Mr. Liberatori says that, after a short initial setting period, he now feels Jakarta as a second home town and he’s amazed with the beautiful landscapes of Indonesia. “I have visited a number of places, such as Lombok, Bali, Medan, Bandung, Bogor, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Solo. This country is very huge and what makes it even more interesting is its cultural diversity… and of course the food.” With a smile, he says of some Indonesian dishes he found palatable. “I love nasi goreng, sate ayam and rendang. There are just many on the list of Indonesian cuisines that I can’t mention the name, but they just taste great. I basically love to sample different foods from various countries. In spite of this, I can’t live without Italian food.” Mr. Liberatori is married to Rita, and both are blessed with a son, Lorenzo, 15; and a daughter, Chiara, 13. The whole family lives in South Jakarta, and weekend is when they spend their precious time doing various activities all together. They also have a dog, Mia, a German shepherd, who is part of the family too. “I like to play soccer with my daughter and my son and to drive my Vespa. At weekend, we often go together with the rest of the family for a fun culinary journey, a movie or to the discovery of the most hidden and characteristic corners of Jakarta. We have together visited a number of holiday destinations in Indonesia, and we look forward to exploring more of what Indonesia has to offer,” the director of ITA in Jakarta says concluding the interview.

Richard Mille Daring and Fighting Spirit

For the third consecutive year as lead partner of the event, Richard Mille has accompanied the 18th Rallye des Princesses. This women-only rally brings together 90 crews from 12 different countries. These crews come to cover close to 1,600 kilometres along the most beautiful roads in France. Ahead of the curve in terms of women’s motorsports, this race has been combating stereotypes about women drivers for eighteen years. Viviane Zaniroli, creator and organiser of Rallye des Princesses commented about the 2017 event: over the years, the rally has unceasingly

reshaped and emancipated itself to become what it is today: an event at once sporting, convivial and participants at long last, no longer relegated to spectatorship, these drivers enjoy getting together each spring for their ‘ladies’ week’ of adventure. From the start, the organisation has sought to maintain a balance between days of sporting excitement and agreeable evening pauses. The event places a particular premium on comfort, as the performance involved in driving a vintage car for 350 kilometres per day on country roads is one that ought to be paired with a well-earned rest.

The rally departed from the prestigious Place Vendôme in Paris to arrive five days later at the iconic Place des Lices in Saint-Tropez. Zaniroli’s goal, and that of her team, is precisely to showcase all their many qualities. At the end of the race, having driven the 1,600 kilometres separating Paris and Saint-Tropez, no participant is exactly as she was, nor entirely different, but all are princesses at heart. Promptly at 8.30am on Sunday 28 May, the 180 participants headed out towards Saint-Aignan in the brilliant sunshine for a 350-kilometre stage that included four regularity tests while discovering the Loiret, the countryside around Briare, the Indre département and Cheravent. The following day, contenders took the Route des Châteaux to the track at La Châtre, where they completed a dedicated regularity test. Vichy was the final destination for this second leg, and an opportunity to prepare for the longest day of the rally: 430 kilometres of roads climbing as high as 1,860 metres around L’Alpe d’Huez before crossing the Hauts Plateaux du Vercors and the breath-taking Gorges d’Engins.

The penultimate day was marked by Alpine passes. No less than five of these had to be crossed before descending toward the Côte d’Azur for a glimpse of the beautiful beaches at Mandelieu. After driving through Grasse, the home of perfume, the contenders reached the Font du Broc château before heading towards the finish line in Saint-Tropez. The awards ceremony was held at the Moorea beach in Ramatuelle. Sporting attitude, femininity and glamour are the attitudes dear to both the Richard Mille brand and the Rallye des Princesses, whose ties become closer and more productive with each edition. Five Porsche 356 and one Porsche 911 were made available to clients and friends of Richard Mille in order to discover this event—which has become de rigueur for ladies who love automobiles—each of whom wore a watch from the Richard Mille ladies’ collection for the race. Not long before, a new impulse emerged in the woman’s market for complicated, mechanical timepieces. Since the beginning of the last decade, roughly, women have become much more active and engaged with watches, and with cars, for that matter; Richard Mille may

Richard Mille Redefining Volume Limit

Richard Mille presents the Calibre Extra Flat Automatic RM 033. An extra flat movement is something most subtle and elegant in the world of horology since the expertise of the watchmaker resides in achieving something almost invisible. The constraints of producing this model are made even more challenging given the limited space available. One of extra flat wristwatch RM 033’s characteristic lies in the placement of the RMXP1 calibre’s automatic micro rotor to the side rather than the centre of the movement, thus saving precious millimetres in total height. As a result, this movement has a diameter of 33.00 mm while its thickness is only of 2.60 mm. To provide perfect weight distribution for this decentralise rotor to function optimally, it has been designed to wind bi-directionally and is manufactured from solid Platinum, allowing efficient winding as well as compact dimensions of the extra flat skeletonized movement.

Circular mechanism, another visible key feature from RM 033, is omnipresent throughout the model. Everything is in perpetual rotation, from gear trains, wheels, pinions, rotors and many others. The concept of extra flat wristwatch allows the brand to focus on this fundamental to delimit the volume of everything and define the shape of the container. The calibre RMXP1, with 29 jewels and beating at 3Hz, has a free sprung balance with variable inertia. This type of balance wheel represents the ultimate in innovation. It guarantees greater reliability when subjected to shock and also during movement assembly and disassembly, hence better chronometric results over time. The regulator index is eliminated and a more accurate and repeatable adjustment is possible thanks to 4 small adjustable weights located directly on the balance. For the creation of the RMXP1 calibre,

the bottom plate bridges and balance cock are made of titanium. The manufacturing of these components in grade 5 titanium with TitalytÂŽ treatment for the bottom plate and black PVD coating for the bridges allows the entire ultra thin assembly to be given great rigidity, as well as precise surface flatness which is essential for the perfect functioning of the gear train as well as stability of the movement. The baseplate and all titanium parts have been subjected to separate and extensive validation tests to insure optimal strength requirements. The round case design of the RM 033 measures 45.70 mm x a mere 6.30 mm in thickness. The curving case back has become the trademark of the entire Richard Mille collection. This tripartite

case with a complete integration of the lugs into the case system is water resistant to 30 meters, ensured by two Nitril O-ring seals. It is assembled with 16 spline screws in grade 5 titanium and abrasion resistant washers in 316L stainless steel. The round case is available in titanium, 18k white gold or red gold. Many details form the signature of this simple and elegant watch, such as the free sprung balance with variable inertia, a power reserve of 42 hours, the extensive use of spline screws grade 5 titanium throughout the movement, the rigorous design and execution of the case, the ceramic crown sealed with double seal O-rings, and the 0.30 mm thick sapphire dial with anti-glare treatment on two sides.

Beyond Timepieces

It’s 2017, and the visitors have landed. The MB&F Horological Machine N°6 Alien Nation is an intergalactic vessel piloted by a silvery-skinned captain and his quintet crew, enigmatic explorers ready to brave a new world. The first two series of HM6, the Space Pirate and Sapphire Vision, were unmanned vehicles. This year, MB&F decided it was time to put someone in the captain’s seat. MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser says, “I first came to love watches because I saw them as these machines that were imbued with life.” HM6 Alien Nation is the literal expression of this metaphor. Its alien inhabitants are not passive passengers. They scurry

around the HM6 engine, fixing the turbines in the aft, adjusting the gears, hand on throttle, scanning the space ahead. Even when frozen into microsculptures of white gold, they are bursting with energy. Each of the six aliens is individually modelled and hand-sculpted in white gold by engraver Olivier Kuhn. The arms and necks of the aliens are finer than grains of sand, each alien requiring up to 34 hours to complete. Count more than a month of full-time work for the crew of six. As would befit spacecraft coming from an alien civilisation with highly sophisticated technology, HM6 Alien Nation is completely transparent, being formed

entirely of sapphire crystal with reinforcing elements in Grade-5 titanium. To be precise, 12 separate blocks of sapphire crystal requiring up to 510 hours of machining and polishing. During the process, breakage is unfortunately frequent before the assembly: the 12 crystals must come together perfectly to present a seamless whole. Alien Nation’s crystal-clear skin reveals the radical HM6 engine, the result of three years of intense development: a highly complex, totally unconventional construction of 496 finely finished components. Topped by a 60-second flying tourbillon with retractable shield, the mechanism drives twin hour and minute domes rotating perpendicularly to the movement. Regulating turbines are coupled to the winding rotor. The interior of Alien Nation is shot through with thick bands of high- performance luminous material called AGT Ultra. There will be four unique pieces of HM6 Alien Nation, differentiated by their accent colours: green, blue, purple and turquoise. Each one is on a mission to seek out a new home on this planet. “I have purchased a map of Paris printed on a pocket handkerchief,” said Karl Gutzkow. On one hand, there’s the 1953 Albert Decaris etching that turned up in the Dior archives, a map of the five continents that retraces the House’s expansion around the world. On the other, there’s the couturier’s assertion in his autobiography, Dior by Dior: “A complete collection should address all types of women in all countries.” Both of these inspirations guided Maria Grazia Chiuri, the Artistic Director of women’s collections, in creating the Autumn-Winter 2017-2018 Haute Couture collection that celebrates the House’s 70th anniversary. For Maria Grazia Chiuri, the atlas symbolises a desire for faraway lands, the need to travel to discover the world and oneself, to feel emotion, grow and evolve. It evokes her own journey from Rome to Paris and her exploration of the Dior heritage. As restless as the first female explorers who overcame geographical and psychological frontiers, she is drawn to the heroine’s air for borrowing elements from the masculine wardrobe and mixing them with ethnic pieces. Thanks to the designer’s sensitivity and new technologies, men’s wear fabrics are transformed into shimmering surfaces and chiaroscuro on jackets, coats, blouses and jumpsuits that recall aviator jackets and open into pleated culotte skirts. Meanwhile, the masculine fedora by Stephen Jones, the milliner who this year celebrates his 20th anniversary as Dior’s hat designer, nods to explorers such as Freya Stark.

The path taken in this homecoming becomes, for Maria Grazia Chiuri, a topography of emotions: colours, flowers and embroidered tarot cards themselves become atlases on capes and evening gowns in silk and tulle, in grey powdered with pink or nocturnal shades of velvet. This fairyland, an imaginary cartography that invents and challenges one’s point of view, recalls the monumental maps and globes of grand interiors: they relay the power of feminine literary roamings, sprinkled with explorations of culture and style.

The artist Pietro Ruffo, with whom Maria Grazia Chiuri shares a creative bond, designed the decor, which retraces the Earth and the celestial sphere with poetic grace. Featured in the collection are the Freya Stark, an anthracite cashmere coat, after the design “Pernelle”, from autumn-winter 1950, and ash grey pleated organza bustier dress; and the Ney York, an ash grey cashmere coat, after the design “New York”, from Autumn-Winter 1954, with a pleated chiffon tiered dress of anthracite grey to pearl grey.

This year marks the 68th anniversary of Indonesia-Italy bilateral relations and the 38th for the presence of ITA office in Indonesia. “And there has been a growing awareness of the economic opportunities in both trade and investment here in Indonesia,” says Dr. Alessandro Liberatori, the director of Italian Trade Agency (ITA) in Jakarta, a government organisation that also functions as Trade Promotion Office of the Italian Embassy. “This world’s largest archipelago is indeed a home to vast natural resources; and with fast-growing domestic market, it is no surprise that foreign investors, including those from Italy, are eyeing Indonesia as a lucrative investment destination.” Over an afternoon tea in his Jakarta’s office, Mr. Liberatori also praises the hard work of Indonesia towards increasing the competitiveness and improvement of business environment in the country. “Important steps forward have been done in providing economic opportunities for companies from various industries including foreign investors but there is still ground for further improvement!” asserts Mr. Liberatori who is serving the current position since November 2015. Prior to his appointment in Jakarta, he was posted at the ITA Headquarters in Rome and had been the director of ITA in Croatia for five years. As for the economic and trade relations between Indonesia and Italy, Mr. Liberatori further asserts, “Our two economies are more complementary than competitive and we have never been so close as in the past couple of years.” His assertion is evidenced by a number of events; among others were the visit of President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella in November 2015 and the official mission in May 2017 of the Italian Minister of Economic Development Carlo Calenda. Mr. Calenda also attended in an important Italian-ASEAN Economic Forum in Jakarta, which saw the participation of over hundred of Italian companies. Other event worth mentioning was the recent visit of Indonesia’s Foreign Minister, Mrs. Retno Marsudi, to Italy at the beginning of October. For 2018 the Italian Government has already identified Indonesia as one of the three focus countries in which to carry out a large cross-sector economic and trade mission. “We have more in our agenda various events, about 40, that have the potential to strengthen bilateral ties in trade and investment between Indonesia and Italy, including, just to mention one, our upcoming trade show in Rimini, Italy called SIGEP-The Sweetest business experience,” Mr. Liberatori says. Sigep is an international trade show featuring artisan gelato, pastry, bakery and coffee sectors. To be held on 2024 January 2018, this annual event will be the 38th. “We are inviting a number of selected Indonesian companies and media to attend this exhibition, the most important in the

world” he adds. The goal is to introduce what we can offer to Indonesian companies that are importers of machinery and ingredients for gelato, pastry, chocolate, coffee and bread; as well as those owners of chain ice cream, bakeries and coffee shops. We are also launching an In-Store promotion of Italian Food & Beverages in cooperation with Ranch Market, to be held in 23 stores across Indonesia from 17 to 26 November 2017 on the occasion of the Week of the Italian Cuisine in the World. Mr. Liberatori also adds that besides the F&B and consumer goods industry, the trade from Italy accounts for about 70 per cent, including advanced technology and machinery, both of which are Italy’s largest exporting and operating industries in Indonesia. “I see that Indonesia is currently undergoing numerous projects, including infrastructure, energy, health care and technology developments; and we really hope that more companies from Italy, the second largest manufacturing country in Europe and the eight largest exporter in the world, can contribute to these developments. We believe that these developments will make Indonesia stronger as South East Asia’s largest economy.” Nearly having a stint in Jakarta for two years, Mr. Liberatori says that, after a short initial setting period, he now feels Jakarta as a second home town and he’s amazed with the beautiful landscapes of Indonesia. “I have visited a number of places, such as Lombok, Bali, Medan, Bandung, Bogor, Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Solo. This country is very huge and what makes it even more interesting is its cultural diversity… and of course the food.” With a smile, he says of some Indonesian dishes he found palatable. “I love nasi goreng, sate ayam and rendang. There are just many on the list of Indonesian cuisines that I can’t mention the name, but they just taste great. I basically love to sample different foods from various countries. In spite of this, I can’t live without Italian food.” Mr. Liberatori is married to Rita, and both are blessed with a son, Lorenzo, 15; and a daughter, Chiara, 13. The whole family lives in South Jakarta, and weekend is when they spend their precious time doing various activities all together. They also have a dog, Mia, a German shepherd, who is part of the family too. “I like to play soccer with my daughter and my son and to drive my Vespa. At weekend, we often go together with the rest of the family for a fun culinary journey, a movie or to the discovery of the most hidden and characteristic corners of Jakarta. We have together visited a number of holiday destinations in Indonesia, and we look forward to exploring more of what Indonesia has to offer,” the director of ITA in Jakarta says concluding the interview.

For the third consecutive year as lead partner of the event, Richard Mille has accompanied the 18th Rallye des Princesses. This women-only rally brings together 90 crews from 12 different countries. These crews come to cover close to 1,600 kilometres along the most beautiful roads in France. Ahead of the curve in terms of women’s motorsports, this race has been combating stereotypes about women drivers for eighteen years. Viviane Zaniroli, creator and organiser of Rallye des Princesses commented about the 2017 event: over the years, the rally has unceasingly

reshaped and emancipated itself to become what it is today: an event at once sporting, convivial and participants at long last, no longer relegated to spectatorship, these drivers enjoy getting together each spring for their ‘ladies’ week’ of adventure. From the start, the organisation has sought to maintain a balance between days of sporting excitement and agreeable evening pauses. The event places a particular premium on comfort, as the performance involved in driving a vintage car for 350 kilometres per day on country roads is one that ought to be paired with a well-earned rest.

The rally departed from the prestigious Place Vendôme in Paris to arrive five days later at the iconic Place des Lices in Saint-Tropez. Zaniroli’s goal, and that of her team, is precisely to showcase all their many qualities. At the end of the race, having driven the 1,600 kilometres separating Paris and Saint-Tropez, no participant is exactly as she was, nor entirely different, but all are princesses at heart. Promptly at 8.30am on Sunday 28 May, the 180 participants headed out towards Saint-Aignan in the brilliant sunshine for a 350-kilometre stage that included four regularity tests while discovering the Loiret, the countryside around Briare, the Indre département and Cheravent. The following day, contenders took the Route des Châteaux to the track at La Châtre, where they completed a dedicated regularity test. Vichy was the final destination for this second leg, and an opportunity to prepare for the longest day of the rally: 430 kilometres of roads climbing as high as 1,860 metres around L’Alpe d’Huez before crossing the Hauts Plateaux du Vercors and the breath-taking Gorges d’Engins.

The penultimate day was marked by Alpine passes. No less than five of these had to be crossed before descending toward the Côte d’Azur for a glimpse of the beautiful beaches at Mandelieu. After driving through Grasse, the home of perfume, the contenders reached the Font du Broc château before heading towards the finish line in Saint-Tropez. The awards ceremony was held at the Moorea beach in Ramatuelle. Sporting attitude, femininity and glamour are the attitudes dear to both the Richard Mille brand and the Rallye des Princesses, whose ties become closer and more productive with each edition. Five Porsche 356 and one Porsche 911 were made available to clients and friends of Richard Mille in order to discover this event—which has become de rigueur for ladies who love automobiles—each of whom wore a watch from the Richard Mille ladies’ collection for the race. Not long before, a new impulse emerged in the woman’s market for complicated, mechanical timepieces. Richard Mille presents the Calibre Extra Flat Automatic RM 033. An extra flat movement is something most subtle and elegant in the world of horology since the expertise of the watchmaker resides in achieving something almost invisible. The constraints of producing this model are made even more challenging given the limited space available. One of extra flat wristwatch RM 033’s characteristic lies in the placement of the RMXP1 calibre’s automatic micro rotor to the side rather than the centre of the movement, thus saving precious millimetres in total height. As a result, this movement has a diameter of 33.00 mm while its thickness is only of 2.60 mm. To provide perfect weight distribution for this decentralise rotor to function optimally, it has been designed to wind bi-directionally and is manufactured from solid Platinum, allowing efficient winding as well as compact dimensions of the extra flat skeletonized movement.

Circular mechanism, another visible key feature from RM 033, is omnipresent throughout the model. Everything is in perpetual rotation, from gear trains, wheels, pinions, rotors and many others. The concept of extra flat wristwatch allows the brand to focus on this fundamental to delimit the volume of everything and define the shape of the container. The calibre RMXP1, with 29 jewels and beating at 3Hz, has a free sprung balance with variable inertia. This type of balance wheel represents the ultimate in innovation. It guarantees greater reliability when subjected to shock and also during movement assembly and disassembly, hence better chronometric results over time. The regulator index is eliminated and a more accurate and repeatable adjustment is possible thanks to 4 small adjustable weights located directly on the balance. For the creation of the RMXP1 calibre,

the bottom plate bridges and balance cock are made of titanium. The manufacturing of these components in grade 5 titanium with TitalytÂŽ treatment for the bottom plate and black PVD coating for the bridges allows the entire ultra thin assembly to be given great rigidity, as well as precise surface flatness which is essential for the perfect functioning of the gear train as well as stability of the movement. The baseplate and all titanium parts have been subjected to separate and extensive validation tests to insure optimal strength requirements. The round case design of the RM 033 measures 45.70 mm x a mere 6.30 mm in thickness. The curving case back has become the trademark of the entire Richard Mille collection. This tripartite

case with a complete integration of the lugs into the case system is water resistant to 30 meters, ensured by two Nitril O-ring seals. It is assembled with 16 spline screws in grade 5 titanium and abrasion resistant washers in 316L stainless steel. The round case is available in titanium, 18k white gold or red gold. Many details form the signature of this simple and elegant watch, such as the free sprung balance with variable inertia, a power reserve of 42 hours, the extensive use of spline screws grade 5 titanium throughout the movement, the rigorous design and execution of the case, the ceramic crown sealed with double seal O-rings, and the 0.30 mm thick sapphire dial with anti-glare treatment on two sides.

Beyond Timepieces

It’s 2017, and the visitors have landed. The MB&F Horological Machine N°6 Alien Nation is an intergalactic vessel piloted by a silvery-skinned captain and his quintet crew, enigmatic explorers ready to brave a new world. The first two series of HM6, the Space Pirate and Sapphire Vision, were unmanned vehicles. This year, MB&F decided it was time to put someone in the captain’s seat. MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser says, “I first came to love watches because I saw them as these machines that were imbued with life.” HM6 Alien Nation is the literal expression of this metaphor. Its alien inhabitants are not passive passengers. They scurry

around the HM6 engine, fixing the turbines in the aft, adjusting the gears, hand on throttle, scanning the space ahead. Even when frozen into microsculptures of white gold, they are bursting with energy. Each of the six aliens is individually modelled and hand-sculpted in white gold by engraver Olivier Kuhn. The arms and necks of the aliens are finer than grains of sand, each alien requiring up to 34 hours to complete. Count more than a month of full-time work for the crew of six. As would befit spacecraft coming from an alien civilisation with highly sophisticated technology, HM6 Alien Nation is completely transparent, being formed

entirely of sapphire crystal with reinforcing elements in Grade-5 titanium. To be precise, 12 separate blocks of sapphire crystal requiring up to 510 hours of machining and polishing. During the process, breakage is unfortunately frequent before the assembly: the 12 crystals must come together perfectly to present a seamless whole. Alien Nation’s crystal-clear skin reveals the radical HM6 engine, the result of three years of intense development: a highly complex, totally unconventional construction of 496 finely finished components. Topped by a 60-second flying tourbillon with retractable shield, the mechanism drives twin hour and minute domes rotating perpendicularly to the movement. Regulating turbines are coupled to the winding rotor. The interior of Alien Nation is shot through with thick bands of high- performance luminous material called AGT Ultra. “I have purchased a map of Paris printed on a pocket handkerchief,” said Karl Gutzkow. On one hand, there’s the 1953 Albert Decaris etching that turned up in the Dior archives, a map of the five continents that retraces the House’s expansion around the world. On the other, there’s the couturier’s assertion in his autobiography, Dior by Dior: “A complete collection should address all types of women in all countries.” Both of these inspirations guided Maria Grazia Chiuri, the Artistic Director of women’s collections, in creating the Autumn-Winter 2017-2018 Haute Couture collection that celebrates the House’s 70th anniversary. For Maria Grazia Chiuri, the atlas symbolises a desire for faraway lands, the need to travel to discover the world and oneself, to feel emotion, grow and evolve. It evokes her own journey from Rome to Paris and her exploration of the Dior heritage. As restless as the first female explorers who overcame geographical and psychological frontiers, she is drawn to the heroine’s air for borrowing elements from the masculine wardrobe and mixing them with ethnic pieces. Thanks to the designer’s sensitivity and new technologies, men’s wear fabrics are transformed into shimmering surfaces and chiaroscuro on jackets, coats, blouses and jumpsuits that recall aviator jackets and open into pleated culotte skirts. Meanwhile, the masculine fedora by Stephen Jones, the milliner who this year celebrates his 20th anniversary as Dior’s hat designer, nods to explorers such as Freya Stark.

The path taken in this homecoming becomes, for Maria Grazia Chiuri, a topography of emotions: colours, flowers and embroidered tarot cards themselves become atlases on capes and evening gowns in silk and tulle, in grey powdered with pink or nocturnal shades of velvet. This fairyland, an imaginary cartography that invents and challenges one’s point of view, recalls the monumental maps and globes of grand interiors: they relay the power of feminine literary roamings, sprinkled with explorations of culture and style.

The artist Pietro Ruffo, with whom Maria Grazia Chiuri shares a creative bond, designed the decor, which retraces the Earth and the celestial sphere with poetic grace. By dreaming of flowers from another world, a strange and ethereal beauty emerges. The Fendi Haute Fourrure Fall/Winter 2017-18 Collection blooms with a verdant garden – from a symbolist springtime to an otherworldly winter, exotic botanicals flourish in perfect synergy with exquisite craftsmanship. 2,500 flowers – from tiny fur rivulets to colourful embroideries and painted motifs – surprisingly blossom and mutate. In delicate wings of fabric, the silhouette unfurls like precious petals, fur coats and gowns that cocoon at the shoulders and fall into fishtail points. Heart shapes abound, draping into soft capes, contoured sleeves and winged skirts. From the iris, daisy or crocus to the seductive poppy, flowers spring to life in the third dimension inlaid in lynx and sable, or woven as a metallic jacquard and an intricate leather lace recreating a flourishing illusion of 145 different colours. Revolutionary technique creates new traditions: mink is re-assembled as an opulent lace fabric to create collars and cuffs accenting tinted sable and pastel Persian lamb. Later, it is hand cut into 10,000 tiny pieces of meticulous ‘pixel’ confetti, hand-stitched one by one onto silk organza to create a radiant mosaic on a cocoon dress. Exquisite craftsmanship, from luxurious embroideries, inlays, three-dimensional appliqué but also hand-painting and lace, flawlessly merge fur with velvet, leather, organza, jacquard, silk and feathers, recreating a delicate silhouette. For the first time ever in the history of fur, sable is bleached and dyed, creating a new colour palette made of thirteen different hues, from pop orange to red, while keeping the extreme softness that characterises the precious fur. Post-impressionist hand painting produces exquisitely soft landscapes on shaved mink and diaphanous silk, their surfaces embellished with a meticulous appliqué of feathers, golden needlepoint and mink thread. Cut and re-assembled into macramé lace thanks to an incredibly

Strong Bold Silhouette

Creative Director Tomas Maier defines sharp silhouettes, with a strong shoulder that emphasises the fitted waist and rounded hips. Individual pieces add to the silhouette, such as knits with an exaggerated shoulder, double-breasted tailoring to fit the waist, and jodhpurs for a shaped hip. “The men’s and women’s complement each other. They were designed at the same time, and speak the same language.” Bottega Veneta Fall/Winter 2017 collection showcases slick and polished vibe to the entire look, highlighting the prevailing silhouette. “This is a silhouette that is like it has been drawn, starting from a precise shoulder line, as if you see the pencil mark on a sketch.” Materials are expressive, from brushed-out goat to shaved shearling, or leather that is shiny or perfectly matte. Colours in the collection include ochre, terracotta and ice blue. Metal thread long gowns are like they have been poured onto the body. Lamé gowns are smocked at the waist, and metal thread jacquard gowns are embellished with metal studs. Double-faced cashmere jackets and coats are colour-blocked and free from any adornment, save for two metal piercings to hold the neck of a cape. Patterns are kept simple – gradient hued pleats and the classic black and white stripes on block colour. Wedge shoes and chunky heels anchor the look, while structured bags come in knitted gold lurex or small and supple intrecciato buckets. Boots, both ankle and knee-high, accentuate the look in a modern manner.

Menswear explores the sharply tailored line, and plays with variations of the tuxedo from day to night. Double-breasted coats have a neat shoulder and fitted waist, with cuts that take on traditions such as the riding or frock coat. “It is glamorous, but in a very Bottega Veneta way. There is an ease to the sophistication, because it is natural.” Tuxedos are cut in a variety of styles,

from traditional and trimmed with grosgrain to tuxedo blousons. Pants are cut for ease, sometimes with pleats, and are often cropped. Lurex sweaters are expressive, while wide bow ties add to the mood. Men’s round-toe lace-ups have a buckle detail, while rain boots have a buckle strap. Bags are squared in shape, with a press-stud opening for functionality.

Cognizance Through Fashion Carol Lim & Humberto Leon presented their collection for Fall/Winter 2017. A discovery of an arctic surfing subculture led us to a wardrobe that combines wild protection with an urban sensibility. The collection celebrates the women and men who experience as raw an environment as it gets, and hoping for it to continue forever. This season’s runway is an embodiment of their concern, and a platform for environmental awareness. The globe is warming. Seasons are fading. Climates are merging into one other. In reaction to the alarming environmental situation, the Kenzo Gang explores a candid, utopic metaphor: this winter, they are going surfing in the Arctic Ocean. The gang is going to ride glaciers rather than waves and lay on the snow rather than the sand. Their outfits follow this new fusion of codes and needs. Vivid colours appear throughout – winter blue and raincoat yellows. Prints include geo tiger patterns, checks and argyles, Hawaiian meets arctic surfer floral, glacier beach and degrade aurora borealis. Knits are intricate and robust. Northern folklores appear with ribbon on dresses and skirts, shearlings in orange are propped up against peplum parkas. Dresses feature x-ray layering. Ready-for-survival, shrunken ski gear. Coats auto-affixed to blazers and leather argyles.

The use of backstage as the set for this show was a conscious decision to create dialogue with ideas for them and to contribute financially to their cause. In addition, for fall 2017 they have partnered with earth guardians to create products that will further push their message. The Kenzo man doesn’t set foot outside his chalet door without a dress-long pullover, worn with the ease of an oversized tunic; the latter comes in a subtle colour gradient, like a sunrise over an ice floe. Bomber jackets shimmer like an aurora borealis in the arctic. Pants and jackets are padded, matching and worn with a belt, like a revisited ski outfit. Backpacks nod at sleeping bags for a trompe l’œil effect. The Kenzo woman plays with dense folkloric prints: checkered, floral and geometrical tiger prints melt into one another. Under her long dresses, a sporty, hightech petticoat peaks out. Threaded ribbons adorn a knitted sweater like a 3D print – a technique once used by Monsieur Kenzo Takada. Ski shoes turn into booties; sunglasses are graphic and rave-like sunglasses: in this powdered landscape where the night never falls, they are getting ready to party under the midnight sun. Innovative fabrics reinforce this theme, with boiled wool and bonded leather and cotton providing protection from the elements while also creating oversized shapes that feel new. Fisherman-style knitwear is crafted in generously chunky constructions, and zipped closed with functional ring pulls, providing a practical, masculine look. The story continues with the construction of the garments. Many pieces have sealed seams for protection, while specialist equipment has been used to sew the heavier fabrics to create truly sturdy outerwear. Colours are precise and masculine: off-white, burgundy and olive green tones sit against grey and navy shades. BALENCIAGA Redefining Suit-and-Tie

Demna Gvasalia is back with a menswear collection that raises a new set of proposals on the subject of corporate dressing this Fall/Winter 2017. Both in-house observation and the external evidence of changing patterns of work have placed tailored coats and two-piece suits high on the agenda. At full length, the overcoat, slightly curved in at the waist, and the calibrated realignment of the unpadded, sloping shoulder are starting points for the collection, which conceals modernizing warmth, softness and comfort into the stiff archetypes of business attire. Work began with the idea of tailoring, coupled with the fact that Balenciaga now shares its Paris premises with the corporate headquarters of the parent company Kering. Those two strands have converged in a discussion of how categories of hierarchical go-to-work uniform are being broken down in creative, tech and sport industries, and by men on the daily commute. The result is a reading of contemporary reality spanning the formal and casual, aimed at the breadth of an intergenerational audience. Suits were cut loose and baggy, while shirts were fully unbuttoned.

Gvasalia aims to work around formalwear and as he said, to “put tailoring on a pedestal”. Classic suit and tie combination got replaced by coat and chest flesh – with sharply exafferated shoulders and oversized sleeves. The classic roomily tailored jackets are re-proportioned with superlow cut narrow trousers; the novelty of Balenciaga ties suggested for men who’ve never worn suits. On the other hand, utilitarian pieces are upgraded: ‘rugby coach‘ coats, padded against the cold, flannel shirts and pea coat-shirt hybrids internally quilted. Even ultimate comfort of the elasticated-waist pyjama pants gets an endorsement, made over in luxurygrade wool. Clearly present are the other codes, such as Balenciaga and Kering brand logo-texts that pepper this collection throughout. Balenciaga menswear Fall/Winter 2017 accessories collection includes pieces that range from high stocking to strap-held man-bag, hoodie to printed scarf-flag. All of this comes grounded in real, heavyduty, high fashion-spec footwear: either biker boots or the new season’s innovation of the Balenciaga Triple-S sneaker, a ready broken-in product constructed with three stacked soles.

Bugatti Geneva Show Car

One year after the world premiere of the Chiron in Geneva, Bugatti drew a positive balance. Half of the total series of 500 vehicles have already had their buyers – even without having test drives. At the end of March, the French super sports car brand was inviting its customers to a central test drive event. With 37 per cent of total sales, Europe is the strongest region, as was the case with the Veyron, followed by North America with 30 per cent of orders. The Middle East, with 26 per cent, is another key traditional market for Bugatti. Within the next few days, the first vehicles are to be

delivered to customers. At this year’s Geneva International Motor Show from 9 to 19 March 2017, Bugatti was showcasing a Chiron produced for a customer in the new exposed carbon fibre colour “Bleu Royal”. The luxury brand from Molsheim is a market leader in terms of the variety of colours and the quality of visible carbon. Wolfgang Dürheimer, president of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., drew a positive balance concerning the past 12 months before the start of the motor show. “The Chiron got off to a fantastic start with its tremendous

world premiere here in Geneva last year,” he said. “Over the months that followed, we kept our foot on the gas, started series production and are now delivering the first vehicles to our customers. The fact that we have already taken orders for half of the Chiron series even without test drives so far bears witness to the great confidence of our customers in our brand and its strong aura,” Dürheimer added. At this year’s Geneva International Motor Show, Bugatti is exhibiting a Chiron produced for a customer from the German-speaking region. The

customer even spent one day in the Atelier in Molsheim working on his car. The Bugatti Chiron uses the same W16 engine as the Veyron. It produces 1,500 hp from an eight-litre W16 engine, completely redesigned for a 25 per cent power boost. The intake tube, the charge air system and the chain housing are all made of carbon fibre. The Chiron uses four higherperformance turbochargers and duplex fuel injection with 32 injectors. Increased cooling allows 60,000 litres of air per minute to be pumped through the engine. Coolant pumps can circulates 800 litres of water

through the engine in a single minute. Bugatti predicts a 420 km/h top speed with a 0 to 100 km/h time of just 2.5 seconds. The chassis of the Bugatti Chiron is a highly sophisticated monocoque prepared to LMP1 level. It is 8 kg lighter and features torsional rigidity of 50,000 Nm per degree. Customers can now choose between a total of eight carbon colours for their Chiron: Black, Grey, Turquoise, Blue, Green, Brown, Red and now also Bleu Royal. For the interior of the Chiron on show in Geneva, the customer opted for a duotone variant. Leather in two different tones of blue, “Deep Blue” and “French Racing Blue”, was used.

Passing on the Gift of Writing

Montblanc and UNICEF are marking their13 successful years of collaboration that have raised over US$10 million to benefit education programmes around the world. “With a further US$1.5 million pledged this year through the launch of new product range, we are continuing our initiative to help unfortunate children be literate,” Matthieu Dupont, President South East Asia Montblanc, tells Registry Indonesia during his short visit to Jakarta. “This year’s initiative is titled ‘Passing on the Gift of Writing’, and we are in our new chapter to further help thousands of children from various parts of the world have access to quality education,” Mr. Duppont explains while showing limited edition writing instruments, timepieces, accessories and leather goods – all that are featured in the latest Montblanc for UNICEF collection. The initiative aims to help improve learning for over five million children across the world. The funds raised will help UNICEF to support national education quality standards that cover pedagogy, reading and writing, the learning environment, community involvement, infrastructure and measuring of learning outcomes. The funds will also go towards teacher training programmes. Montblanc’s collaboration with UNICEF began in 2004 with “Sign Up for the Right to Write” initiative, which saw the Maison raise funds through the sale of a limited edition of 4,810 pens. Another chapter continued the initiative with the “Power to Write” campaign in 2007, supporting UNICEF education programmes through the sale of a special edition writing instrument. In 2013, Montblanc renewed the “Signature for Good” initiative with a collection of writing instruments, leather pieces and jewellery featuring a brick design that symbolised the joint effort of building a better future for all children and their communities by improving access to quality education, including the construction of schools. Without doubt, the huge funds raised since 2014 through Montblanc-UNICEF partnership have given significant impacts in improving children education in many countries. “We’re not going to stop here. We will continue the partnership with more initiatives to help educate children with the power of words,” Mr. Dupont concludes.

Zhu Wei is the first Chinese contemporary artist to bring the traditional painting method into the contemporary art world. Linda Gallery, in collaboration with Zhu Wei, presents Virtual Focus: A solo exhibition by Zhu Wei. The exhibition took place at the National Museum of Indonesia Gambir, Central Jakarta, and stays for two-month duration from 25 August to 26 October 2017. The artist Zhu Wei and curator Lu Hong were present at the opening reception on 26 August 2017. The exhibition documents the interests of Zhu Wei between 1987 and present, reflecting the interests and development of his thoughts through his works. Peering into the almanac of contemporary Chinese painters, it is not difficult to see how Zhu Wei stands out from the rest. Zhu Wei chose to convey his thoughts on contemporary society in a traditional artistic language, reinvigorating the traditions of

gongbi painting and in turn, the way contemporary art market perceives Chinese ink paintings. Wielding it as a tool, Zhu Wei reflects modern society, politics and most importantly, humanity in his works in often witty, cynical and sometime critical eye. As the celebrated curator Lu Hong once described in his studies on Zhu Wei’s work, Zhu Wei remains the only artist in time immemorial that has managed to combine the Songdynasty painting technique with contemporary sensibility, in a way, making a mark on history with each painting created. Moving beyond mere fabled symbolism and iconography, Zhu Wei’s works exemplified deep introspection and internalisation of his subjects – as with Song Dynasty gongbi painters that came before him, presenting his subjects with deep intrinsic emotions that are delicate and subtle.
