Amanjiwo

Framed by emerald-green rice plains and the peaks of the Menoreh Hills in rural Central Java, Amanjiwo lies within view of the mystical stupas of Borobudur, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The Buddhist monument directly informs the design of Amanjiwo, a temple-like hideaway with a towering domed roof, colonnades and walls built of local blush-beige paras stone. Intersperse days of sightseeing – at serene Borobudur, bustling Yogyakarta or any number of vibrant villages – with spells of relaxation at Amanjiwo’s spa, 40-metre pool and romantic open-air restaurant. Decorated with sungkai-wood screens, coconut- wood and rattan furniture, antique batik cushions and Javanese glass artworks, the 36 freestanding suites radiate in two crescents from Amanjiwo’s central rotunda. All feature terrazzo floors, high ceilings, domed roofs and garden terraces with a thatched bale for outdoor lounging. Dalem Jiwo Suite, the most spacious of them all, has its own entrance and driveway, wrapped around terrace and two outdoor lounging bales, facilitates two separate bedroom pavilions with sunken outdoor tubs and central rotunda overlooking a private 15-metre pool. With ancient temples, volcanic mountains, traditional villages and bustling cultural hubs nearby, opportunities for trekking and sightseeing around Amanjiwo are endless. This year, Amanjiwo celebrates its 20th year. This means that a year-long calendar of cultural enrichment and show-stopping spectacles has been prepared for guests, which includes events, experiences and exhibitions that blend a feeling of celebration. Guests in residence on the 20th of each month will be invited to join a convivial evening of cocktails and enlightenment, which commences with a talk on Borobudur’s history and significance by resident anthropologist Patrick von Hoebrooke. Across breathtaking landscapes of rice fields, bamboo forest and historic Javanese villages, a special 20th anniversary cycling excursion running throughout the year will take guests on a two- hour, 20km tour of Amanjiwo’s UNESCO-protected surroundings, with two route options available depending on guests’ ability levels. To showcase its two-decade relationship with the local modernart scene, Amanjiwo is hosting a series of exhibitions and one-of-akind art events. Beginning with ‘The Sikepan Collection’, a show from Amanjiwo’s closest creative neighbour, the Dutch-New Zealander artist John van der Sterren from 1 January to 30 April. From May 2017 Amanjiwo will display an art show titled ‘Topeng’. Topeng is a Javanese dramatic, storytelling performance accompanied by music, which originated from tribal dances in Bali and Java in the 15th Century.

Amandari

Inspired by a traditional village, Amandari is framed by jungle and rice terraces in Bali’s cultural heartland. Alang-alang-thatched houses – some with pools, all with private tropical gardens – cosset guests under bamboo ceilings, their suites elegantly decorated with teak and coconut-wood. The grounds are both sacred and essential to local families: children attend dance classes here, and religious processions pass through regularly, leading down the steps that spill below Amandari to a 7th-century stone tiger – a motif repeated throughout the property. Follow the road out of the village to hike or bike the emerald-green landscape; or head further afield for artisan villages, hidden temples, and the palaces and boutiques of Ubud. Amandari lies in the village of Kedewatan, 15-minute drive away from Ubud, hidden on a hillside overlooking rice terraces and the wilderness of the Ayung Valley. Amandari is around an hour drive north of Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. Surrounded by traditional paras-stone walls, each of the freestanding suites is accessed by a traditional Balinese stone gateway, leading to private courtyard gardens and sumptuous interiors. Amandari facilitates 32 suites in eleven different ambiences. Exposed to cooling mountain breezes, the open-air main restaurant and adjacent bar enjoy spectacular views of the pool and the Ayung River. Offering fine tropical dining from breakfast all the way to dinner, The Restaurant serves up a sophisticated menu of Indonesian and Western dishes. An upper level provides an ideal space for more intimate dinners, while private dining is available in-suite, 24 hours a day. Amandari can arrange guided tailor-made excursions anywhere in Bali; popular day trips include Gunung Kawi, a group of 11th-century temple monuments dedicated to King Anak Wungsu; Lake Batur; Mount Agung; and Ceking, famous for its precipitous rice terraces. Amandari guides have a thorough knowledge of the island and will show guests both popular and off-the-beaten-track sights. Popular activities include visiting Ubud and artisan villages, trekking, cycling, rafting and golf.

Amankila

With sacred Mount Agung as its backdrop and unimpeded views of the Lombok Strait, Amankila enjoys a breathtaking hilltop spot in the historic Karangasem Regency, on Bali’s east coast. References to Balinese culture abound – in the motifs inspired by the water palace at nearby Ujung; in the paras stone decorating the stilted and thatched suites; and in the spectacular infinity pool that cascades in three tiers down the hillside, reminiscent of a rice paddy. Stretching from hilltop to private beach, the property lies within reach of atmospheric temples and artisan villages. Amankila is located on a Cliffside position overlooking the Lombok Strait in East Bali, near Manggis, Candi Dasa, Tenganan and other villages in Karangasem – Bali’s most traditional regency. Amankila is 1.5-hour drive from Bali’s Denpasar International Airport with designated cars equipped with Wi-Fi, iPod, drinks and snacks. Raised on stilts and thatched with alang-alang, Amankila’s 33 suites – nine with private pools – enjoy ocean or garden views, and consummate privacy. Decorated with inlaid pearl and coconut- shell furniture, all suites

feature canopied king size beds, a living area, large bathroom with a soaking tub, and an outdoor terraces. This year, Amankila too celebrates its 25 years anniversary. Fittingly, Amankila has drawn upon the creative and artisanal traditions of the area to colour its celebratory agenda. On four dates during 2017, Easter session, the month of August and during the festive period, the hotel team along with local village performers will present a captivating 45-minute stage show, The Story of Indrakila, which uses song, dance and the traditional art of shadow puppetry known as wayang kulit to retell a tale from the great Hindu epic Mahabharata. In one part of the story, the hero Arjuna meditates on Mount Indrakila – a scene depicted in a carving in Amankila’s lobby, which gave Amankila its name. Between July and September, Amankila draws on two of the great artisanal textile traditions of nearby villages, with a three-month exhibition dedicated to the crafts of songket and geringsing taking over the resort’s boutique shop and gallery space.

Amanikan Navigate new horizons in a handcrafted phinisi or traditional teak cruiser, surrounded by marine life unique to these waters. Sail the high seas, weave the way among UNESCO-protected islands and discover landscapes few are ever privy to. Drawing its name from the Sanskrit-derived word for ‘peace’, and ikan meaning ‘fish’, Amanikan is elegant and contemporary, fusing the character of traditional spice-trading vessels with every modern comfort. A custombuilt, 105-foot, motor-powered cruiser, Amanikan is handmade from local hardwoods by master craftsmen of the Konjo tribe in Sulawesi and Surabaya. The crew of 10 includes a personal chef, dive master, captain, cruise manager, waiter and housekeeper. Menus are tailored to personal preferences and dietary requirements, combining Indonesian, Western and international specialties. Private beach barbecues and picnics can be arranged. If space allows, a therapist or wellness specialist can join the expedition team. Itineraries are specially designed according to guests’ wishes – with the surprise of uplifting Aman along the way. Destination choices include Komodo National Park, Banda Spice Islands and Raja Ampat.

24

Dive and snorkel the world’s most biologically diverse and acclaimed underwater sites around the Nusa Tenggara archipelago. From the colourful reefs of Tatawa Island to the enchanting hues of Komodo’s Pink Beach, this national park is a forgotten Eden, on land and sea. Encounter antediluvian creatures unchanged since prehistoric times – these two islands are the only places that the infamous Komodo dragon can still be found. Four and a half degrees south of the Equator, the seven volcanic islands of the Banda archipelago were for centuries the world’s only source of nutmeg, earning the Moluccas their nickname – the ‘Spice Islands’. Each tropical paradise is covered in dense forests; ensuring exclusivity on top of the fact that only one voyage takes place each year. Raja Ampat, known as the Four Kings – 40,000 square kilometres of the Indonesian archipelago in the northeast seas are where the Pacific and Indian Oceans collide. Spy over 1,300 of fish and hundreds of hard corals, not to mention the exotic flora and fauna such as karst forests of endangered orchids – look up to see sea eagles and the famed birds of paradise.

Amanwana Mother Nature is allowed full reign across the 36,000 hectares of nature reserve that make up private Moyo Island, in the coral-rich Flores Sea. Here in this wildlife lover’s paradise, Amanwana has set up camp, with 20 safari tents amid the rainforest or on the shore. Low-impact and eco-friendly, the tents are nonetheless equipped with hardwood floors and soaring, air-conditioned canopies sheltering sumptuous daybeds, ensuite bathrooms and net-draped king size beds. Visits from friendly macaques and inquisitive deer are not uncommon, and hint at the abundance of nature to be found further inland, or out to sea. Located just east of Bali facing Sumbawa Island, Moyo Island lies at the western end of the Nusa Tenggara archipelago. Amanwana is tucked into a secluded cove on the island’s west coast, looking out to the Flores Sea. Amanwana is 65 minutes away from Bali’s Denpasar International Airport by floatplane, or two hours by air and boat to Sumbawa Besar. Under a canopy of tropical forest, the camp’s 20 safari-style tents offer an abundance of 21st-century comforts amid elegant decor and Indonesian art. The accommodation is 58 square metres each, made of solid foundations, wooden walls, picture windows and wooden decks with canvas ceilings with separate waterproof exterior layer. Adventure-worn appetites will be quickly sated in Amanwana’s inviting teak bar and beach side restaurant. Alfresco beach and garden dinners, either around a campfire or à deux, as well as private barbecues, are also possible. Relaxation and Spa include the Jungle Cove Spa, set beneath shady tamarind trees overlooking the sea, and dive centre to dive or snorkel some of the world’s best reefs with a team of experienced instructors for beginners and experienced divers. YULIE NASUTION GRILLON & DARA SETYOHADI

Inspiring Duo

The mother-daughter relationship displayed in everyday life of Madame Yulie Nasution Grillon and Dara Setyohadi not only speaks the unbreakable bond of love and friendship, but has also borne the fruit of solid collaboration in the art world. Blessed with artistic talents and sharing the same passion for painting, the two are engaged in collaborative work producing various beautiful paintings on porcelain and bone china tableware. On a shiny morning at their residence in South Jakarta, Registry Indonesia gets up-close and personal with adorable Yulie and lovely Dara who talk about their collaborative artworks, their daily routine, and their views on women’s emancipation as the country is observing Kartini’s Day this month. Yulie is no stranger in diplomatic community in Indonesia. Her husband, H.E. Cesar Esteban Grillon, recently completed his tenure as the Jakartabased Ambassador of Paraguay to South East Asia and is soon to take another diplomatic tenure in Costa Rica. The two met in Jakarta in 2012 and tied the knot the following year. Dara is one creative figure of the millennial generation who regards her mother as a paragon. This is also mirrored in her collaboration with her mother, in which both view as a manifestation of mother-daughter bond that communicates their harmonious relationship.

Starting off with ideas, the dynamic duo later launched their “Y&D Setyohadi Collection” in November 2010, with Blooming Blossoms (sakura) as the first painting series on bone china and porcelain tableware, such as tea set, coffee set, tea pot, tier, mug, plates and dinner set. First cut is the deepest. This popular saying reminds them of the beginning of their collaborative art journey. “Our first painting series drew attention especially among dignitaries and diplomatic community, and later spread by words of mouth,” Yulie recalls while Dara adds, “The words of mouth led us to continue with more series of different floral patterns.” In commemoration of Kartini’s Day in April 2012, Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) bestowed them with an award as the world’s first mother and daughter collaboration on porcelain painting. “The award really surprised us. Being the world first inked in one of the world’s prestigious awards? It’s something beyond our expectation, indeed,” Yulie says expressing her excitement while Dara nods in agreement. They received the MURI award just a few months before launching the second series featuring tulips and tulip garden. While their first series is credited to Dara’s inspiration on Japanese cherry blossoms, the tulip series is the fruit of Yulie’s inspiration she got during her holiday in the Netherlands.

Cover story April 2017.indd 28

A graduate of Stamford College, Singapore, Yulie is an autodidactic watercolour painting artist who started developing her artistic talent since her early years. Dara completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from La Salle College of the arts, Singapore, and just like her mother, she has the interest in watercolour painting since her young age. “In creating our works of paintings, I basically perfect my mother’s paintings or vice versa. Whoever gets an idea to create a new pattern, the other one perfect it,” Dara explains. As the journey continued, they later introduced more floral designs: the Jasmine series in 2013, and last year with the Roses series. Dara further says while pointing at jasmine paintings on a tea set, “Our concept is featuring designs of different flowers from all over the world, like jasmine from Indonesia and rose from Britain. Not only tableware, we recently also inked our floral paintings on Hermes Birkin bag.” Now, as people from across the archipelago is observing Kartini’s Day which falls on the 21st of this month, the mother-daughter duo are set to launch their first coffee table book featuring all the four floral series. Titled The Art of Table Setting the book launch will take place in Jakarta, followed by road shows in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei.

“The book is bilingual, in both English and Indonesian. We would like to promote our artworks in creative industries in Indonesia and other countries”, Yulie says while Dara adds, “We’ve selected those countries as destinations of our road shows because we Indonesians have established strong ties with those countries especially in arts and culture.” Aside from their seriousness in promoting their porcelain painting products, both Yulie and Dara have their other activities that fill their agenda to the brim. Yulie’s daily routine is wrapped with various activities, including as an active member of Indonesian Water Colour Society (IWS) and ASEAN Water Colour Confederation (AWC). She also owns and runs Yulindra Gallery in South Jakarta, a fine art gallery that showcases various artworks on various media. Yulie has also been actively involved as one of the judges in grand final of Puteri Indonesia - Miss Universe Indonesia 2016, and recently for 2017. She was in charge as a coach of fashion, art and table manner for all finalists of the 2017 grand final, which also saw the attendance of Miss Universe 2016, Iris Mittenaere from France. Just like her mother, Dara is always seen very active in her daily life. Still 28, but she has her finger in many pies. The host of Net TV’s Dulux Let’s Colour has successfully built a number of businesses in her career as both interior designer and restaurateur. She owns and manages ARDS Studio that is engaged in interior design and architecture, tableware products and event styling. In the world of food and beverages, Dara owns a few restaurants in Jakarta With her ARDS Studio, she has designed an array of high-end projects, from residences and offices to boutiques and restaurants, including her own Maple & Oak. “Basically, I design the space and interior and integrate every single element of the restaurants, so as to create such an atmosphere that will be remembered and make patrons come back,” she says, referring to Maple & Oak with its Aussie brunch and Hyde that serves mostly western fare. While attentively listening to her daughter’s explanation, Yulie adds with a giggle, “You should try the worms there at Hyde.” And Dara replies in a laugh, “Yes, should try the worms there. It’s a must-try menu there.” The mother then explains that this chocolate jelly looks like worms but it tastes real yummy. “That’s the exciting part of this resto.” Despite their busy daily routine, both Yulie and Dara see travelling as one way of recharging the batteries. “We like to go to places we haven’t been before,” both say with a laugh. “I love travelling with my mother. We often travel with the whole family. Wherever we travel, we always try to spare time to visit galleries, historical buildings and cultural sites. My mother loves Europe. So do I, especially Spain for its amazing landscape that displays the synergy of modern and historical elements. This reminds me of Japan. The country boasts modern architecture with traditional elements that represent their culture,” Dara says with her mother nodding in agreement. In observing the Kartini’s Day, both Yulie and Dara share the same view on the gender issue. Men and women have equal rights under the law in Indonesia. Yet, many traditions and societies are still male dominated, both remark. “It’s very important to build awareness of gender equality from an early age. Don’t underestimate the potential that women have in their contributions to society. If women were empowered to do more and be more, they could contribute more than men economically,” Yulie asserts with Dara adding, “So, it’s time for our society to promote the participation of women in various sectors. Their participation surely has the potential to spur national development.”

CHOPARD Ablaze with Light

In the Chopard workshops, everything begins with a story of hands: those of the expert, patient and inventive artisans within the manufacture who successively apply their skills to these exceptional creations. Uniting more than 30 crafts under the same roof facilitates this smooth, complementary interaction between the various talents. They represent a wealth that the Scheufele family carefully nurtures by focusing on the transmission of expertise from generation to generation, as well as on training. Chopard is keenly aware that the most precious heritage is above all, and those artisans are responsible for crafting exceptional pieces. Chopard creations are an integral part of the proud High Jewellery tradition and artistic crafts are exercised at the very highest level there: lost-wax carvers and casters, jewellers, lapidaries, gemsetters and polisher. From lines to volumes, from goldsmithing to working on precious stones, they perpetually push the boundaries of feasibility and, by pooling their talents, give vibrant life to the most prestigious jewellery. Introduced in 2016 with jewellery sets inspired by a blooming corolla or the flurry of a whirling tutu skirt, Precious Chopard is now welcoming dainty long ear pendants, openworked necklaces and an exceptional diamond lacework watch. With Precious Chopard, the jewellery artisans of the Geneva-based Maison become lacework experts. The masterpiece among the new releases gracing the collection

is a majestic watch featuring a bracelet embracing the wrist like two interwoven ribbons: one featuring a lacework of brilliant-cut diamonds, and the other composed of reverse-set pear-shaped diamonds. Adorning the sapphire crystal, a few delicate precious stone lacy tendrils that appear to have escaped from the bracelet glowing with absolute purity and finesse, testifying to the expertise of an exceptional master gemsetter. This timepiece is made of 18ct white gold and diamonds, in addition with a crown set with a rose-cut diamond, with automatic movement.

This dazzling showcase for stunning jewellery skills is complemented by refined and precious earrings and necklaces. Necklace is also in 18ct white gold set with pear-shaped and brilliant-cut sapphires (59.3cts) and brilliant-cut (8.7cts) diamonds, whilst earrings are in 18ct white gold set with a variant of sapphires and diamonds ranging from 2.7cts to 10.7cts. Like finely worked ornamental trimmings, they pick up the subtle curves of the collection in a daintily interwoven play on pear-shaped and brilliant-cut sapphires and diamonds, stemming from Chopard’s unique blend of sophisticated technical virtuosity and resolutely modern artistry.

TIFFANY & CO. Paloma Picasso

Paloma Picasso is one of the world’s most acclaimed jewellery designers and a fashion icon. She is celebrated for creating jewellery of generous size and extraordinary beauty, inspired by her travels and the exotic places she has called home. After attending the Université de Paris at Nanterre, she became a costume designer and stylist for avant-garde productions in Paris. Her talent for jewellery design soon emerged on the theatrical stage. In a moment of inspired improvisation, she created necklaces from gem-set bikinis designed for the Folies Bergères, which captured the attention of theatre critics. In 1979, thenTiffany Design Director John Loring invited Ms. Picasso to present a table setting for one of Tiffany’s exhibitions. A year later, Tiffany introduced Paloma Picasso’s first exclusive collection of jewellery, which was instantly embraced for its innovative “graffiti” shapes, bold scale and brilliant colour contrasts. Her choices of whimsical shapes, links and weaves, together with her unique colour combinations, have earned Ms. Picasso an international reputation. Throughout her long collaboration with Tiffany, she has created many one-ofa-kind accessories and important necklaces, mounting some of the largest and finest specimens of coloured gemstones. John Loring describes Paloma Picasso’s designs as “aggressively chic and uncompromisingly stylized. Her signature is seen in X’s, scribbles and zigzags, all sculpted in gold. She also punctuates gold with lavishly scaled coloured gemstones.” In recognition of her achievements, two American museums have

acquired Ms. Picasso’s work. The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History houses her spectacular 396.30-carat kunzite necklace. And her 408.63-carat moonstone bracelet with diamond “lightning bolts” is in the permanent collection of Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History. In 1988, she was honoured by The Fashion Group International for her great contribution to the industry. The Hispanic Designers Inc. presented her with its MODA award for design excellence, and she has been inducted into the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame. In 2011, she was honoured by an exhibition for her work at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, in Washington, DC. She marked her 30th anniversary at Tiffany & Co. in 2010 with the introduction of three new jewellery collections — Paloma’s Marrakesh, Hammered Circles and Paloma’s Dove — each an elegant statement of her timeless sophistication. Ms. Picasso continues to expand her existing jewellery designs and introduce new creations as well. Her signature collections grace Tiffany & Co. stores around the world.

EDWARD CHIU The Divine Gift

“Stone from Heaven, Art from Earth.” The Chinese admire jade above all other valuable materials, even gold and ivory. In Chinese culture, jade is believed to be a link between the physical and spiritual worlds, and is thought to be the material form that most completely embodies both the Ying and Yang qualities of Heaven and Earth. Thus it is called “The Stone from Heaven”. The Mandarin word for jade is “yu”. This character is similar to a capital “I” with a line across the middle. The top of the character represents Heaven and the bottom represents Earth, with the line in the middle symbolising mankind. The dot is Jade, a gift from Divine. It turns into work of art with mankind’s creative input. Jade is unique like every single human being, you can never find exactly same piece of jade on Earth. The Edward Chiu brand will forever be associated with both contemporary jade jewellery and the man himself, whose love of design was a life-long passion. Edward Chiu Jewelry Art is acclaimed for jewellery of timeless elegance and exquisite museum quality pieces treasured by discerning connoisseurs of fine jewellery throughout the world. Among the many luminaries who follow the brand are renowned socialites, popular celebrities and distinguished members of royalty.

The Edward Chiu brand originates with Edward Chiu, a jeweller regarded for his ability to combine traditional materials and innovative design to create the unique look that characterises every Edward Chiu piece. Born into a family that had been dealing in jade for generations, he originally had no desire to pursue a career in the family business. It was only later, when he attended the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York, that he recognised the artistic potential inherent in fine jewellery. Edward’s creations are in many ways reflective of his origins in Hong Kong — a blend of East and West, refined old-world craftsmanship and

contemporary sophistication. Although not enamoured of traditional jade, he had a vision for incorporating this material into modern designs that appeal to a new generation of jewellery lovers. For this collection of Edward Chiu jade, clutches are taking over the conventional jewelry pieces. Each piece has one of a kind motif adorning its entire body, all thanks to the natural coloration of the stone. Complex yet easy to admire, every one of the clutches has priceless elegance and exclusivity to it. Rings and necklaces are adorned with Edward Chiu signature style, and with the brand’s signature colors of green, lavender, black and white.

CARTIER

Lush Renderings of Nature

For the 2017 edition, Cartier has chosen to showcase its dual fields of expertise, watchmaking and jewellery, in a glittering display of gemstones. The crossover between the two arts has inspired a dialogue, which creates beautiful shapes in pieces designed to stand the test of time. Cartier has mastered the artistic craft of creating a dial with the luminosity of enamel and the precision of a miniature painting. This Ronde Louis Cartier watch pioneers a new technique in watchmaking: flamed gold, the latest addition to the repertoire of Cartier craftsmanship. The flamed gold technique is inspired by the method of bluing watch hands in a flame. It requires a perfect mastery of intense heat since the most precise temperatures are needed to elicit the colours: the hottest flame produces blue, the coolest beige. The pattern of the panther’s coat is engraved – or ‘brushed’ – onto the 18-carat-gold dial. The gold plate is heated in a flame to produce an initial colour, and returned to the flame as many times as necessary until the full palette of colours has been produced.

4/17/17 10:19 PM

This sensitive and exacting technique calls for tremendous foresight: since each return to the flame alters all of the colours. Accuracy and attention are imperative or long hours of work can be undone in an instant. Ronde Louis Cartier XL flamed gold watch, is set with 18ct white gold case, sapphire crystal and case back, and black alligator skin strap. Cartier has chosen to pave the bezel of this exquisite timepiece in baguette-cut diamonds, a flash of fire that brilliantly illuminates the genius of the artwork. The creature is strikingly lifelike from the top of the ears to the tip of the nose. Panther jewellery watch, on the other hand, highlights the complexity of forms and proportions at play, the work of the jeweller is seduced with

astonishing delicacy. By turns playful, stately, mischievous or feral, the Cartier panther is at ease in every role. The Panthère Royale watch reigns supreme with a dial that twinkles with brilliant-cut diamonds. Set in a three-dimensional sculpture, this miniature bas-relief recalls one of the creature’s earliest appearances on a sapphire brooch created for the Duchess of Windsor in 1949. Diamonds conjure illusions of depth and dimension from the bezel to the glittering lace of the motif, and the wild cat is ablaze with the fire of diamonds. The sheen of her coat spotted with lacquer, the Cartier panther dazzles as the fierce guardian of precious time.

RICHARD MILLE International Tennis Star Partner

Richard Mille proudly presents the brand’s international tennis player partner Alexander Zverev, who recently claimed the second title of his international tennis career in Montpellier. In just 1 hour and 29 minutes, Zverev deprived Richard Gasquet of a fourth title at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier on Sunday 12 February. It’s an auspicious start at only the beginning of 2017 for the German, who is continuing his spectacular rise on the circuit, and may well become the number one player in the world someday. Zverev showed himself unyielding as the encounter heated up, particularly during the first set’s tie-breaker. During the second set, Gasquet, trailing 3-5, lost his service in the 8th game and was unable to prevent Zverev from winning. This triumph, with a final score of 7-6, 6-3, is Alexander Zverev’s second World Tour title, his win in Saint-Petersburg last year being the first. It can be said that the young player, who is only 19 years old, is off to an extremely promising start. Not content with his singles victory, Zverev, brimming with confidence, also took home the Open’s doubles competition with his elder brother Mischa, their first title as a doubles team. In a three-set match (6-4, 6-7, 10-7) they prevailed over second-seeded Fabrice Martin and Daniel Nestor. In the throes of emotion following his victory, Mischa shared, “I congratulate my brother for winning both the singles and the doubles. He was exceptional. I am truly delighted to

be sharing this title with him.” This marks the first time a player has won both the singles and doubles titles since Lleyton Hewitt did so at Newport in 2014. And let us recall that since 2000, only seven players, including Zverev have won multiple titles before the age of 20. “Sascha” Zverev, as he is known, is currently 18th in the ATP World

Tour rankings. After his remarkable feat of pushing fellow Richard Mille partner Rafael Nadal to a fifth set in Australia, it is gratifying to see his progress rewarded with the trophy in Montpellier. Zverev, with all his achievements and charisma, wears the RM 27-01 Tourbillon Rafael Nadal collection on court as a proud partner of Richard Mille.

H. MOSER & CIE. Compelling from Every Angle

With the Heritage Tourbillon, H. Moser & Cie. pays tribute to exceptional artisan watchmaking. This exceptional timepiece links tradition and modernity, two elements which coexist in all creations by H. Moser & Cie. The Heritage Tourbillon is a salute to watchmaking past and present. It is the distillation of H. Moser & Cie.’s 187 years of watchmaking expertise. The inspiration behind the Heritage Tourbillon Skeleton came from an H. Moser pocket watch dating from the late 19th century in the H. Moser & Cie. collection. The case on this model, made from striking blue, engraved enamel and studded with diamonds, inspired the watchmakers at the Schaffhausenbased manufacture to reinterpret this watch, calling on the best craftsmen to work on the case. Featuring stunning blue enamel on a case with two covers, a “Grand Feu” enamel dial, guilloché engraving and diamond setting techniques, in association with a modern in- house, automatic calibre with a minute-tourbillon: the Heritage Tourbillon is the synthesis of the greatest

48

arts in watchmaking craftsmanship. Working through the power of highperformance HMC 802, in 5N red gold model paired with blue alligator leather strap, this exceptional timepiece is limited edition of ten pieces worldwide. H. Moser & Cie. brought surprise in the most unexpected of places early this year in the launch of Swiss Alp Watch Minute Retrograde. Pairing the rectangular case of its Swiss Alp Watch with the highly technical movement from its sister brand HAUTLENCE, H. Moser & Cie. has created a delightful surprise which combines tradition with modernity. This unique approach faithfully employs classic Haute Horlogerie techniques whilst incorporating the ultimate in technological movements. The piece features a minute dial created in “Grand Feu” enamel and a flame-blued retrograde hand. Its rectangular 18ct white gold case is spectacular with its rounded corners, curved sapphire crystal on its edges, and three 3D sapphire crystals adorning the top and sides. The exquisite

curved crystal case sets off the HAUTLENCE HL2.0 calibre to stunning effect. The hourly rotation of the regulating organ on the mobile form movement can be admired through the large opening. H. Moser & Cie. chose black alligator leather for the strap, which has a matte look on this model thanks to its carbon-effect finish. The timepiece comes with a second strap, in beige kudu leather with a green leather lining – a true hallmark of the brand. Limited edition to ten pieces worldwide.

BREGUET

Ladies’ Mechanical Collection

Creativity, innovation and impeccable aesthetics are once again the keynotes of the prestigious models unveiled by Breguet at Baselworld. Loyal to its history, the House honours its founder’s broad range of competencies that prove ample benefit to watchmaking as well as to navigation and astronomy. Elected a member of the Bureau des longitudes in Paris, and then chronometer maker to the French Royal Navy and a member of the French Academy of Science, A.-L. Breguet conceptualised and developed in the course of his career a wealth of spectacular timepieces that include astronomical clocks and marine chronometers. The flagship model of 2017 redefines and takes the helm of the line it is joining. Breguet offers devotees of Haute Horlogerie an opportunity to

50

discover the fundamentals of this exceptional model through a surprising exhibit combining visual panels and explanations, scale models and interactive modules. Unveiled just March this year, this travelling exhibition will then make stopovers in major cities across Europe, Asia and the United States. The Tradition collection from Breguet belongs to the select circle of authentic Haute Horlogerie icons. First introduced in 2005, it has steadily expanded to include a palette of exceptional models now enriched by the rose gold Tradition Dame. With this self-winding timepiece, Breguet has succeeded in feminising a model whose aesthetic essence lies in mechanical horology, a field that many tend to reserve for men.

Clearly visible front and centre of the watch, the barrel is decorated with a rosette motif and overlapped at 12 o’clock by a dainty offset dial in natural white mother-of-pearl, finely adorned with hand-crafted engine-turned “Clous de Paris” hobnailing. Although in full view, the main movement gear trains, as well as the bridges bearing them, remain sufficiently discreet to ensure smooth and instant reading of the hours and minutes pointed to by rose gold open-tipped Breguet hands. The sandblasted mainplate and bridges are rhodium-plated to create a pleasing contrast with the rose gold case. The latter’s bezel is adorned

with 68 brilliant-cut diamonds, while a watch jewel sets the perfect finishing touch to the crown. The magnificent craftsmanship lavished on this model is also visible through the back on the gold oscillating weight, graced with the same motif as the barrel. Equipped with Calibre 505SR, it features a lever escapement with silicon horns and a Breguet balance spring also made of silicon. This new Tradition Dame is set to assert itself as a major player on the scene of feminine Haute Horlogerie.

DIOR

Diversity of Talents

“I strive to be attentive and open to the world and to create fashion that resembles the women of today,” says Maria Grazia Chiuri, Artistic Director of the Dior haute couture, women’s ready-towear and accessories collections. “Fashion that corresponds to their changing needs, freed from the stereotypical categories. Fencing is a discipline in which the balance between thought and action, the harmony between mind and heart are essential. The uniform of the female fencer is, with the exception of some special protections, the same as for a male fencer. The female body adapts itself to an outfit, which in turn, seems to have been shaped to its curves.” Maria Grazia Chiuri is the first woman to hold the creative reins at Dior. Her boldly feminine outlook – feminist is a recurring word for her – explores the rules of modern beauty to transpose them into a collection shaped by the sensual tension that exists between the body and clothing. Christian Dior’s New Look challenged notions of dress with modernity and rigor, giving back to women the curves and refinement that the war had erased; with fashion that was revolutionary for the time.

Fascinated by the house’s intimate and artisanal aspect, she has experimented with different materials in novel constructions and combinations. Through decontextualized forms injected with movement, she invents a dialogue between signs and gestures: the unoppressive corset that with lightness and lightly-worn irony expresses the desire to look and to appeal; the liberated glimpse of a technical and graphic undergarment that caresses the bust’s curves, its elastic is adorned with brandreferencing puns, turning it into a kind of gothic and retro rap to the beat of “j’adior”. Ready-to-wear that embraces street wear influences and techno materials, as well as that magical, dreamy, almost divinatory dimension, so dear to the founder of the house and expressed by Maria Grazia Chiuri in that notable phrase: “Learn to follow your own dreams.” Sumptuous zodiac sign embroideries cover fabrics to the extent that they appear like paintings. Materials include cotton, which comes in blue, white and black; as well as Christian Dior’s beloved red, in addition to grey and pink. Denim acts as a connective element. Tulle, silk chiffon and georgette are cut into maxi skirts whose varying lengths reflect a woman’s varying desires. But it is the beating heart embroidered on the chest, as in the first fencing outfits, that express better than a thousand words ever could, the intensity and strength of emotions possessed by the women of today. Magic Lanterns “Literature was not born the day when a boy crying ‘wolf, wolf ’ came running out of the Neanderthal valley with a big gray wolf at his heels; literature was born on the day when a boy came crying ‘wolf, wolf ’ and there was no wolf behind him.” V. Nabokov. In this collection, all the clothes tell a story steeped in wonder, phantasmagoria and unorthodoxy. Such stories don’t mimetically represent reality. They rather act as magic lanterns, as distorting mirrors, altering languages, signs and consolidated codes. As in a game, the attempt is “to destroy, for a moment, the stability of perception so that the lucid conscience is forced to undergo a kind of sensual panic.” R. Caillois. The narrative principle is non-linear; it is made of ruptures, digs, leaps, cross-references and unpredictable connections. An archipelagic and metamorphic approach in which the thought over owns undisciplined and doesn’t follow in the wake of tradition. It’s an intentionally unsystematic thought, therefore alive. If it’s true that thoughts organised in closed systems are pitiless because “they gradually exclude the unexpressed and leave it dry behind them, until it dies of thirst,” E. Canetti, it’s then necessary to break these systems to fertilise new meanings and cultivate the unexpected. Alessandro Michele, Gucci’s creative director described this Spring Summer 2017, “it’s beautiful and pop but also very sophisticated in a way. It’s an eclectic conversation between different inspirations, that at the end becomes a language. My idea of fashion was always that it wasn’t just one story.” This latest Gucci collection is not within a safe zone to play with, some will absolutely love it while at the same time it will be too much for the other some. The style turns models into

quirky character icons, a collection of vintage colourful outfits for a disco night out, kept classy and glamour by the touch of turbans, headscarves and huge hats. One thing pops into mind of those who sees the collection: retro touch in modern vibes. The house certainly had fun playing with huge dress, huge skirt, huge coat, huge everything – in a bold choices of colours indeed. It sure gives others reasons to talk, from the backwards bags to the insane and brilliant encrusted sunglasses to the bejeweled platforms. And for those who prefer a little less attention, there are lots of accessories to choose from, which will stand out still perfectly on its own.

BURBERRY

Exploration of Silhouettes Burberry premiered its February 2017 collection for men and women at its Makers House show venue in London. Models including Burberry’s latest campaign cast Amber Witcomb, Elfie Reigate, Ella King, Myles Dominique, Nora Attal and Tom Fool previewed the looks on the runway, which was interspersed with bronze sculptures by Henry Moore, the iconic British artist that inspired the collection. A collection of 78 limited-edition couture capes was presented as part of the show’s finale. Inspired by the scale and form of Moore’s elemental sculptures, each unisex design was made using unique constructions and referencing elements from the Burberry archive. Each individually named cape is available for special order, and will form part of a travelling exhibition around the world. Unveiled in full, the collection is inspired by the work and personal style of Henry Moore – exploring sculpture and silhouette, material and process, strengthening proportions and hard-wearing fabrics. The artist’s influence is articulated through form, texture and crafted detail, as well as vivid prints referencing his designs from the archive at the Henry Moore Foundation. The show also introduced mid-calf boots with an angular cut-out heel for women, and leather brogues with an asymmetric closure for men: both playing on Moore’s abstract sculpture.

Fabric includes tumbled tropical gabardine, Henry Moore print cotton, poplin shirting, apron-stripe silk cotton, tweed and herringbone wool, engineered cable knit, sweatshirt jersey, soutache and macramé lace and natural shearling – all in harmonious colour palette of white, black, nude, indigo and red. Burberry also introduced a new collection of men and women’s bags. Named after the house code for Burberry’s signature honey-coloured gabardine, The DK88 bag collection features classic styles reimagined in Burberry’s new Trench Leather and will launch in full this May. The DK88 collection is a tribute to the fabric at the heart of Burberry’s history. Other accessories collection includes sculpted-heel knitted ankle boots, asymmetric leather brogues and Henry Moore Pallas Head bags. All menswear and womenswear looks shown were made available to buy via Burberry’s physical, digital and partner retail networks immediately following the show, as part of the brand’s second straight-to-consumer collection. Created in collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation, Makers House hosted an exhibition, providing a rare opportunity to explore Moore’s working methods and the evolution of his iconic sculptural ideas outside of Henry Moore Studios & Gardens in Hertfordshire featuring over 40 of his sculptures, monumental bronzes, working models, drawings and maquettes.

PRADA Total Space

The set for the Prada Women’s Spring/Summer 2017 show was conceived by AMO as layers of diverse architectures. The new space is built over the remnants of the previous season, serving as both a foundation and visible background for the current scenography. The central space has been cleared to accommodate a linear structure that divides the room and amplifies its proportions. A straight ramp elevated above the floor serves as the catwalk and risers are arranged along the perimeter accommodate the guests. All the elements of the set are shroud in an expanded-metal layer forming an abstract configuration of overlapping mesh. The underlying framework remains visible through the cladding and is revealed with Cartesian precision. Lights filter through the mesh creates a pale glow. The centre axis of the space contains a 12-screen film installation by the director David O. Russell and the New York design studio 2x4. Russell imagined the installation as a surreal dreamscape with an eclectic cast replaying scenes in shifting combinations. The content is derived from the soon-to-be released short film Past Forward, collaboration between Russell and Miuccia Prada. Critically acclaimed for his award-winning cinema working with ensembles of actors in films

such as The Fighter, American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook, Russell conceived of Past Forward as a complex experiment in cinematic form intended for display in multiple environments: gallery installation, cinema, social media and online. Miuccia Prada’s concept this season was to simplify, de-clutter and de-intellectualize. As she said, “instead of exploring the history of women, which I have for a while, I decided to take care of now, the present, and trying to find elegance.” Nonetheless there were still many reminders of Prada’s earlier collections, such as her passion for a ‘20s and ‘30s Deco-graphic print on a midi dress and some reminders of the ‘90s minimalisms. The collection was given a fresh new spin through the lightness and pastel pretty nature of those feathers, which could be found anywhere from snaking down a skirt slit, down and around an opera coat, or peeking through end-sleeves. Seen were little aspects of seductive and sophisticated, like a hybrid of multiple Prada collections with modern touches of Miuccia Prada.

GIVENCHY Nature and Sensuality

Inspired by the spirituality of nature, Riccardo Tisci creates a collection that celebrates femininity. His anatomical silhouettes mix the geometrical rigor of tailoring with the sensuality of jersey & silk, carefully moulding his woman’s body. It was unexpected seeing Tisci turning away from the sweatshirts and branded sneakers that have made his time in the house such a commercial success – especially in a season believed to have sportswear as a key reference. The Couture Savoir-Faire & the masculine wardrobe references define the Givenchy woman in her diverse Spring/Summer 2017 universe. We were outside again, he says, because he’s been thinking about nature and sensuality. “Women are fighting for power, not only in America, but everywhere in the world,” Tisci says. “So I wanted to do something more sensual and more powerful, and for me, that’s tied to nature.” Enter the trio of agate-print slip dresses layered over long tanks that started the show. They keyed the fiery colour palette – red, orange, brown, and pink. Yet, before Tisci really got into that, he sent out another trio, this one consisting of black pantsuits with silver zip details and the patch pockets seen in his June menswear. The models wore them shirtless, with giant agate pendants suspended from tortoiseshell chains. Back and forth it went between fitted, but not severe, dresses and sleek pantsuits.

“I wanted to change it into something more powerful, something more sensual. This is a year of the powerful woman, I wanted to reflect that,” he says. The dresses came in solid neutrals and solid brights, as well as flirty polka dots and stripes. Kendall Jenner wore an LBD printed with mandalas, a motif Tisci touched on last season; only here he did it in a lower key. The Tibetan circle of wisdom represents all aspects of life and the world, and it seems to be affecting Tisci as his new concept change is indeed a wise move. All the colour and print notwithstanding, this was a more subdued outing than Fall. As for the tailoring, it didn’t stray far from the template Tisci laid out with those first three suits, although he did venture a brown one with swingy flared pants and a glam series at the end embroidered with shards of coloured crystal arranged in flowerlike patterns. It was neat and functional, smart black jackets were fastened with zipper fixtures so that the peplum and pockets could be taken away.

CÉLINE

Exceptionally Fashionable Chaos

Phoebe Philo, creative director of Céline, worked up her mystery by saying absolutely nothing about her latest Spring-Summer 2017 collection until long after the show. Céline enthusiast can only wait and see what the collection would speak for themselves, and it is guaranteed to be classy. As it transpired, the set up of the show and the clothes did speak for themselves— and for a relatable point of view on women’s lives. There was the soundtrack, to begin with: the far-off noise of city traffic, and children’s voices. With a big help from artist Dan Graham, Philo made her spring Céline show a beautiful reflection on the power of the everyday, the nuance of human nature zinging by us at all times and the role fashion plays in telling that story. The set for her Céline show was one of Graham’s pavilions, an S-shaped, two-way glass structure — reflective and transparent. It wasn’t hard to see the message: This was a broad spectrum of clothes designed to make everyday life a little easier and more beautiful for lots of women. But what also draws women to Céline is Philo’s subtly nonconformist taste level. This time it was her brilliant colour sense, which demonstrated that distinction, mint green and magenta combined in a low-waisted cotton shirtdress attached to a flowy skirt, with red boots and a bag, for example; or the offbeat shades of lemon and pink in a couple of evening dresses. Transparent blue glasses and rope belts. A journey into the study of the artsy and the very body-conscious. From faux bra tops in applique, embroidered like a spider’s web. Painted body prints on dresses. Leather skirts over

lightweight skirts, knotted dresses and porthole shaped coats through to dresses with trailing hems transformed into capes. All in all, there was a sense that a Céline woman could go anywhere she needs in these clothes – to the school gate in the trainers, to a meeting in the tailoring, to a gallery opening or a cocktail party, without feeling either underdressed or overdone. It was fashion on an intuitive, clever, understanding wavelength.

The show was an eye-opening display of complexity and perception, partially due to the set, which offered those seated in the right place literal self-reflection, but mostly because of the clothes. Philo thoughtfully created ensembles that made everyone consider the circumstances, decisions and surprises that drive a person’s daily existence. Traditional clothes came in unusual proportions with an emphasis on deconstruction, offbeat colours and counterintuitive styling.

HERMÈS

The Most Luxuriant Hermès’ menswear artistic director, Véronique Nichanian, is showing her interest in the power of colour for this Spring Summer 2017 collection. She may have interests but her sphere of work is compact. The demands throughout seasons are looking similar and standardised to one high set of bar for the wealthiest of clienteles. There’s an inherent conservatism to that economic strata of society, particularly when it comes to their clothes. Colour is a primary tool, because while men may sniff at a strange fabric or an architectonic cut, you can possibly entice them into wearing a citrus

66

yellow goatskin T-shirt, or at least injecting the colour into a fine-gauge knit of accessories. The limoncello was a key punctuation for this collection’s statement of easy bomber jackets, papery overcoats and a set of overalls. The designer worked tissue-thin lambskin into elegant cardigans, jackets and narrow pants. Tie-dye patterns blossomed on filmy silk knits, and on a cobalt blue shirt in a paisley-printed silk twill. The haute hippie looks set the casual tone of the display, which spotlighted that rare and fascinating breed: the leisure class.

Fashion is increasingly mediated by digital imagery—the argument being that the industry is in the doldrums due to said snaps removing a lust to acquire and replacing it with ennui. These kinds of clothes can be seen as an antidote to that school of thought; garments you have to lay your hands on in order to fully understand. A loose grey sweater with an open polo collar and contrasting white stripes seemed immune to the passage of time: It could have been lifted from a Jacques Henri Lartigue photograph, or spotted last week at the Meadow Club. Two-button suits were worn with chunky sandals, signalling a casual disregard for established rules. Nichanian took a risk with the sulfur yellow shade that was the guiding thread of the show. The acid-bright colour worked its way onto canvas weekend bags and an equine-themed camouflage print. A men’s show at Hermès carries the promise of a few key ingredients: sumptuous leathers, elegant tailoring and an intrepid way with pattern. Véronique Nichanian’s spring collection delivered all three in spades.

HUGO BOSS Digital Oasis

With the birth of the personal computer and the games console came a whole new and exciting world. For Spring/Summer 2017, the HUGO Man takes a nostalgic look back to the digital landscape of the 1980s, viewed through a modern-day lens. Follow him into an oasis of pixelated prints and graphic designs, where the icons of video games take the spotlight. Clean silhouettes are influenced by the precision of the digital age, but fused with the attitude of 80s active wear. Oversize and boxy shapes with sportswear details are rendered in ultra-light fabrics, while new hybrid garments are created – think classic coats and unstructured tailoring reworked with raw edges and bomber details. Prints and patterns transport us to the dawn of the digital age. A 3D optic grid in green transforms a tailored suit, referencing the first computer screens. Inspired by early video games, space alien and monster-like characters enter the collection, forming graphics on sweaters and T-shirts, or appearing as a subtle flash, printed onto a jacket’s lining. Vibrant flower and leaf prints lead us further into the digital oasis. A vivid cactus flower print is emblazoned over an entire suit;

a jungle leaf design is mapped with a computer screen’s grid, while a pixelated graphic, placed front and centre on a T-shirt, glows from underneath tailoring. This collection’s colour palette features tones of purple, chartreuse and Sahara, inspired by the fading light of the desert at sundown. The German brand enlists the current photographer of the era, Harley Weir, to capture an eclectic series of images in the California desert. Looking through the eyes of early millennial, Hugo Boss Men “Digital Oasis” campaign features the younger generation. Rising stars from the worlds of art, music, film, fashion, even social media are Anwar Hadid, Felix Gesnouin, Luka Sabbat, Kiki Willems, Soko, Devon Aoki, Alexandra Marzella and Jasper Briggs. Accessories continue this story. Sporty backpacks and holdalls are crafted from technical fabrics with rich leather details, or covered with the digital jungle print, adding a new vibrancy to the designs. Shoes take a futuristic turn, introducing clean sneakers with distinctive elastic panels in red, white and printed options. As we venture though the pixelated oasis, it all becomes clear: when it comes to bold, modern style, for the HUGO Man, it is never game over.

INVENTIVE & MISCHIEVOUS Graphic silhouettes stand out against an immaculate background like an arty collage. For the Spring- Summer 2017 Ready-to-Wear collection ad campaign, Karl Lagerfeld plays with contrasts as he captures the metamorphosis of a contemporary creature, one minute a pop Lolita, the next a cyber punk. Bold colors or black and white, close-ups or bodies in motion, the campaign highlights the explosive combinations from a collection that is feminine and yet ultra-modern. The silhouettes combine striking pieces and an accumulation of pieces of fine jewelry. Inventive and mischievous, the collection campaign recreates the energy of the Data Center Chanel runway show.

MISS DIOR Absolutely Blooming

Absolutely floral, sensual and delicious: Miss Dior Absolutely Blooming is an inviting new composition. With it, François Demachy, Dior perfumer-creator, revisits the theme of floral delight and reveals facets of an elegant perfume that loves life and its pleasures. Flowers take flight, dressed in delightful bright notes. Every petal is both an embrace and an exclamation of joy. Each flower lays itself bare, revealing sensual and spirited notes. They are partners coming together to provide the thrill of a deep kiss. With just the right amount of fruitiness, it already has the particular blend of Dior elegance that combines fresh nonchalance and sassiness. Enamored of the Provençal terroir, Christian Dior found inspiration for his first legendary perfumes. He wrote that Miss Dior was born of those Provençal evenings, alive with fireflies, illuminated by a floral bouquet, over which the May rose reigns. Today, such rare beauty of May rose’s hundred petals is cherished above all others by Dior for it holds a special place in the history of the house. Thousands of May rose bushes have been planted by Armelle Janody from the Clos de Callian, which reserves its entire harvest of May rose for Dior perfumes. The magnificent Grasse rose absolute unfurls its sensual accords. The Rosa centifolia, so named for its 100 petals, diffuses its honeyed and peppery notes. In perfect harmony with the beautifully spirited Rosa damascena, the exquisite May is jubilant. This effusive bouquet gives of itself sincerely, emphasizing the

passion for flowers that inhabits the soul of avenue Montaigne. The opening notes of red fruit, raspberry, pomegranate and blackcurrant accord are heightened by the spicy, teasing tingle of pink peppercorn, appealing to the senses. Loyal to the spirit of blooming bouquet, François Demachy has created a composition with immediate impact. Miss Dior Absolutely Blooming is a perfume with a smile. As François Demachy emphasizes, there is not a single bitter note in the composition. Nothing grates, or disturbs its positive and delicate harmony. For Miss Dior Absolutely Blooming campaign, Natalie Portman meets up once again with her favorite photographer, Tim Walker. Various pop pink images see the reinvention of a vivacious and passionate Miss Dior. She draws us in with her laughing eyes, a completely sensual Miss Dior – light-heartedly seductive and provocative. She is fascinating, asserting her liberated and carefree character. Speaking of her attractive charm, she retains her legendary light gracefulness.

BVLGARI

New Revolutionary Chapter

Bulgari presents the new Le Gemme collection dedicated to men. It was written in the DNA of the master of colored gemstones that Bulgari would one day travel the roads of the world to seek, in order to reveal them, the secret correspondences between gemstones and fragrances. And thus in 2014 the first Le Gemme collection for women appeared, an olfactory tribute to six precious stones that are emblematic of the Roman jeweler. Echoing these precious Eaux de Parfum this new high perfumery collection dedicated to men revisits an entire aspect of ancient history following the precious stones and perfume roads that the great conquerors and luxury nomads of Antiquity discovered during their travels and their conquests. Bulgari entrusted Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier with the task of transcribing the six gemstones of the collection in a radical palette. Like an olfactory “big-bang, this new collection shakes up the codes of luxury perfumes for men. From the great conquerors to the most famous athletes, who rubbed aromatic oils over their body before combats and competitions, a sensual asceticism appears. An expression of the hedonistic luxury that makes an effervescent comeback in the 21st century.

For Le Gemme masculine collection Jacques Cavallier has imagined an olfactory journey around six emblematic stones, each with intense color and a strong and expressive history. The road has lead to six decisive and charismatic scents. The creation of each fragrance was a true challenge for the Perfumer: the opportunity to explore, and revisit, major themes of men’s perfume such as Fougère, to combine extreme accords and contrasts around an Ambery Citrus, or to pay tribute to exceptional raw materials such as Patchouli, Vetiver, Oud or Roses. Jacques Cavallier has worked in total creative freedom to transcribe the universe of these six gemstones, while using some of the rarest and most desirable natural ingredients in the world of perfumery. These extremely rich and sophisticated signatures are Bulgari’s promise to offer the quality of a great perfume to men. The six muses for gemstones are: Tygar, a tiger’s eye that sees everything, in yellow and brown stripes; Malakeos, the banded green Malachite that rebalances energies; Ambero, the mythical amber in soft orange and caramel tone, with electrostatic properties; Gyan, or the blue Sapphire, who is in charge of diffusing divine light and astrological rituals; Garanat, an intense red stone of Garnet, the symbol of eternity; and lastly Onekh, the impenetrable black Onyx, the god of the dead and the return to life.

AMANOI SPA New Wellness Immersions

Amanoi has unveiled two Spa Houses, the first of their kind for Aman. Its meditative outpost in Vietnam is hugged by rolling hills, overlooking picturesque Vinh Hy Bay, situated in NĂşi ChĂşa National Park. Since its launch in 2013, Amanoi has perfectly encapsulated the essence of Aman where peace, intimacy, privacy and sense of place take centre stage. Neighbouring the 11,000 square metre spa which overlooks a calming lake strewn with lotus flowers, the two Spa Houses offer utmost privacy, with one, Thuy Lien Spa House (meaning Lotus Spa House in Vietnamese) featuring tranquil and clear views of the lake and the other, An Son Spa House (Peaceful Mountain Spa House) providing a serene vista of the national park. Each Spa House encompasses a spacious double treatment room adorned with a mural from Vietnamese artist Mr. Bui Huu Hung, Jacuzzi, and steam room

complemented by an ice-fountain and cold plunge pool. The outdoor infinity pool, perched on a relaxation deck, provides an ideal setting for escapism and reflection, whilst either a hammam or banya round off the thermal facilities. An extensive spa menu including specialised massage techniques and treatments such as Watsu, Reiki, craniosacral therapy, acupressure, reflexology and Chi Nei Tsang can be fully tailored, as well as therapies in two categories, Bodywork and Energywork, which will also be available at both houses. Bodywork therapies are instructor led and include yoga and Pilates sessions, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, pranayama breathing, and meditation, whilst the Energywork sessions include a range of private fitness classes such as kickboxing, TRX suspension training, circuit training, boot camp training, manual holistic stretching and core sessions.

Finally,

the Longevity, Rejuvenation & Detoxification immersion is designed to reduce toxic accumulations and the physiological hurdles caused by exposure to a modern environment. A. LANGE & SÖHNE Highest Watchmaking Artistry The fifth masterpiece in A. Lange & Söhne’s “Pour le Mérite” series combines the fusée-and-chain transmission with a tourbillon, a chronograph, a rattrapante function and a perpetual calendar. The Tourbograph Perpetual “Pour le Mérite” is the epitome of classic watchmaking: its hallmarks permeate all domains from design and engineering to consummate, flawless artisanship. The dial itself reflects the traditional approach in timekeeping. Arabic numerals, a railway-track minute scale, blued steel hands for the time and rhodiumed gold hands for the calendar as well as the cloverleaf arrangement of the subsidiary dials. The masterpiece is being crafted in a limited edition of only 50 platinum-cased watches.

DURAVIT Aesthetically Calming Duravit and Phoenix Design implemented a modern concept of comfort without compromising on design with the P3 Comforts complete bathroom range. Simple geometric forms have been modified for this collection allowing each product to blend naturally into its surroundings. The details are impressive: the raised tap platform on the washbasin – visually separated from the wet area yet still part of the harmonious whole. Neck rest in the bathtub lives up to the ranges’ name, cushioning the neck while supporting the bather’s head. Bathtub comes with an optional whirl system, such as the new Combi-L featuring swivel massage jets that deliver stimulation and relaxation in equal measure.

HAUTLENCE Infinity Inside The Moebius model is an exceptional timepiece celebrating perpetual motion, lightness and transparency. At the heart of the Moebius movement is a continuously spinning bi-axial tourbillon. Thanks to a specific construction, the movement appears to float as if suspended in mid-air. The minute dial is made of sapphire and almost completely transparent. The white or red gold cradle bars are fixed onto the sides. The sides of the case are fitted with sapphire crystals screwed into the structure. The Hautlence HL Moebius model is limited edition to 16 timepieces worldwide, 8 pieces of the white gold edition and 8 pieces of the red gold edition.

Ultimate Style and Power

Bentley Flying Spur W12 S is the flagship to the Flying Spur Range, the first four-door Bentley to have a top speed in excess of 200 mph for a more sporting experience to those looking for increased power, torque and responsiveness. The Flying Spur W12 S features a number of dark styling cues, which hint at its dynamic capabilities. A suite of black ware detailing – including Beluga gloss radiator grille and light surrounds – a rear diffuser and optional carbon fibre veneer gives the model a dramatic and purposeful appearance to match its performance. Dark tint lamps to the front and rear are teamed with a black matrix grille, rear diffuser and 21” 7 gloss black Twin-spoke wheels, which can be paired with a choice of either red or black painted brake calipers. In the Flying Spur W12 S, veneered surfaces have been treated with an

84

irresistible twist on a classic. Bentley has long offered turned aluminium, or ‘engine spin’ as a material in place of wooden veneers. Derived directly from the bespoke car interiors created for the Bentley Boys in the Roaring Twenties, it remains popular among those drivers keen to introduce elements reminiscent of classic early racing cars. But now, it comes with a darker side: black engine spin. Cars can be commissioned with this striking surface throughout – or in combination with carbon fibre, for an even more technical look. A unique new wheel finish has been created for the model, unavailable on any other Bentley: the 21” 7 twin-spoke gloss black wheel. The optional 21” Directional sports alloy wheel is also available in either a black or dark tint finish.

The Flying Spur W12 S features the Mulliner Driving Specification as standard, ensuring that drilled alloy foot pedals, knurled controls and other sports styling features are on show throughout the car’s exquisite interior. Alongside the Sports Plus steering wheel, knurled gear shift paddles and, if desired, carbon fibre inlays to the fascia and doors. The mighty 6.0-litre, twin-turbo W12 engine receives enhanced power and torque outputs. Through precise calibration and tuning, engine power is increased from 625 PS to 635 PS (626 bhp) and torque from 800 Nm to 820 Nm (605 lb. ft.) This increase in power means that the Flying Spur W12 S achieves a top speed of 325 km/h (202 mph) – the first four-door Bentley to exceed the 200 mph performance barrier. The initial sprint to

100 km/h is dispatched in 4.5 seconds (0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds). With a wide range of unique features including the Mulliner Driving Specification as standard and black brightware on the exterior of the car, it represents a strikingly charismatic canvas on which to make your mark with Bentley’s incredible range of options. The Flying Spur W12 S is upholstered with hides that are among the finest used in the automotive industry. The natural leather aroma, reminiscent of classic Bentley interiors, is the result of Bentley’s own tanning process, after which the hides are dyed in a range of over 17 colours – with bespoke hues available on request. When it comes to the exterior finish, there is a choice of over 100 extended range colours.

VIVIANNE FAYE Bringing Glamour to Life

The launch of “A Tribute to Glamour” book in mid 2016 marked 25 years of Vivianne Faye’s career in interior design industry. It book launch shared the event with “The Colours of Indonesia” two years interior exhibition as a way for Vivianne Faye to honour the industry. She graduated from Interior Design & Graphic Arts of California State University Fresno, and has brought many masterpieces to life throughout the world. She has always left a signature style in each of her design, which makes every one of them even more unique. “My design experiences has taught me to be able to communicate well, to understand clients’ will and personal style, without washing away my own signature in each piece,” said Vivianne. In this edition, she shows some of her design style in a residential project in Kedoya area, Jakarta. Here she exhibits Californian classic design, one of her favourite style of all. The design in particular embraces understated elegance, just in the right amount to still be kept casual. The classic yet glamorous style is obvious through the choice of colours, both base-tone and accents, as well as the overall design motifs. “Most of my clients give me freedom and total confidence for me to decide what kind of design I think suits their personality, overall room design, and their daily activities the best. Of course there were consultation sessions in early project

days between them and my team to figure out the middle ground between both their styles, what to enhance and what to avoid and so on.” Her ability to understand clients’ desires has always been one of her strengths in the industry. This is why her clients have had total confidence leaving everything to her hand, which she took without once leaving her signature style behind – a glamour touch with rich layers. In this residential project in Kedoya, every room is given different and unpredictable treatment, yet harmonious as a whole. She is not into

uniformity when it comes to design, she would prefer diversity every time. She strongly feels that uniformity especially in colour tones gives monotone feeling. “Colour choices, accents and motifs brought life and soul to a room. Don’t put too much statement pieces in one room. Let one or two of them sit perfectly as the focal point,” as Vivianne explained, “things don’t have to be perfect. I can live with flaws or imperfections. Cause no one is perfect, and likewise, nothing is perfect.”

BABY DIOR Sky, Sea and Flowers Dior girls’ Spring-Summer 2017 collection is designed by Cordelia de Castellane, Creative Director of Baby Dior. The collection is an ode to this love of nature inspired by the earth, the sky and water. The collection is comprised of six themes whose names - Crazy Red, Lily of the Valley, Vegetal Sky, Nuages, Sunset and Under the Seas – correspond to a colour palette that ranges from pastels to brights. Jacquard dresses and skilfully handled pleats, a House specialty, are revisited in silk, organza or velvet fabrics. For boys, the collection traces a journey between city and nature. The lines Look Up, Grow Out, Dive In and Walk On evoke this balance between sportswear and elegance.

BAUME & MERCIER Light in the Blue Sky The new Promesse watch gives a glimpse into the mystery behind the four phases of the moon, unveiling each chapter right on the dial. With this new addition, Baume & Mercier combines the poetic complication of ne watchmaking with the aesthetic of a piece of jewelry. With a modern twist, the moon phase drawing perfectly suits the blue lacquered dial. The 30 diamonds, set like two crescent moons, brighten up this starry night and highlight the oval shaped bezel. This interplay of shapes has been the trademark of Promesse since its creation. A final touch—the glossy midnight blue alligator strap, completes the chic masterpiece.

SERGIO ROSSI Contemporary Elegance Sergio Rossi launched its latest black and white Sergio Rossi sr1, pays tribute to a new aesthetic of elegance. Its geometric and iconic high heel is perfectly crafted for a dynamic and stylish woman. The campaign features the sr1 in repetition as a metaphor to the dynamism of the Sergio Rossi woman grounded in both reality and fantasy. The campaign shows a collection that works from day to night with creations that embody the elegance, needs and passions of the modern woman and her world.

BUKIT PANDAWA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB World-Class Golf Course Opened in late 2016, Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club is the latest addition to Bali’s growing collection of world-class golf courses. Strategically located on a limestone cliff-top overlooking the world-famous surf breaks of Bukit Peninsula, the singular venue offers 18 championship calibre par-3 golf holes, many of which are back-dropped by rustic architectural relics and

spectacular views of the Indian Ocean, with a clubhouse inspired by the island’s famous grand temples. coastline. The club is the centrepiece of an expansive development that will eventually include several 5-star hotels, including a Waldorf Astoria, Mandarin Oriental and Swissôtel. Bukit Pandawa Golf & Country Club is the first golf course of its kind in Bali, if not in all Southeast Asia to be facilitated with the 18 championship calibre par3 golf holes, ranging from 117 to 244 yards in length. While the par-54 layout is a time-saver with a typical round lasting in just 120 minutes, it is not short on its own challenges. Set across a limestone cliff top as it meanders through dramatic rock outcroppings, terraced rice paddy field, the course in itself is an art savour with the spectacular white sandy beach and the Indian Ocean as its backdrop, and only 45 minutes drive away from Denpasar International Airport. The plethora of bunkers and strategic waterfalls sprinkled into this latest

creation of Bob Moore, have redefined golf unto a new pedestal of harmony and balance. Harmonius example of style and space, the clubhouse covers an extensive 3,000 sqm, the ’18th hole’ is also a harmonious designed by Antony Liu and Ferry Ridwan Architects from Studio TonTon in Jakarta. While half of the building houses the pro shop and restaurant/cafe – whose upstairs perch offers spectacular views of the ocean and course – the other half is a labyrinth of impressive and substantive spaces within both locker rooms. The imaginative, twin-block structure was designed to blend into its natural surroundings through the liberal implementation of local materials such as stone and wood, native grasses, and above all – water, which flows seamlessly through many of the building’s spaces.

SIDIK W. MARTOWIDJOJO Illuminate Art Exhibition

Borobudur, 68 x 136 cm, Ink and Colour on rice paper, 2016

Painting has always been a valuable artwork since the first recorded history. Besides its high monetary value, each painting has its own signature, a timeless uniqueness to it to be embraced by every generation. The more distinct signature a painting has, the more value is added to it. Set for examples are “Monalisa” by Leonardo da Vinci, the works of Van Gogh, Picasso, Basuki Abdullah and Affandi. In Indonesia, Bali has been known as one of the creative cities producing a lot of high quality artworks. For the last few years, the gross of exporting paintings worldwide has been really promising. In response to Indonesia’s art-culture richness and the development of the industry, Kadin Indonesia is going to continue encouraging further development in the country, especially through paintings. Their latest support in the industry was an Art Exhibition Road Show, held in a number of cities throughout the world, with the theme of “Illuminate”. They started the exhibition in Museum Nasional Jakarta from 2 to 20 March 2017. KADIN Indonesia dedicated the exhibition for showcasing paintings of Sidik W. Martowidjojo, as one of globally renowned Indonesian painters. His works have received numerous international awards, such as from Louvre International Art, France; National Art Museum of China (NAMoC), Beijing; among all others.

Sidik has been raised and taught with Chinese culture since he could remember, thus highly influencing his style and technique in paintings. In “illuminate” painting exhibition, Sidik showcased his Chinese-based paintings with influences from western painting technique and deep social-cultural understanding of Indonesian local culture. In recent human civilisation, the shadow of duality has become a universal phenomenon. This duality refers to juxtaposed conditions such as day and night, light and darkness, earth and sky, good and bad, men and women, etc. It was never recorded the period of time in

which men developed this kind of conscience in their minds. By the end of 2016, Sidik has opened a museum dedicated to his works, located in Ndalem Kraton Ngayogyakarta area. Sharing the same timeline with the opening, Jin Hong Yue, the Chinese Culture Counselor, said that Sidik has given a valuable contribution towards Chinese-Indonesia cultural exchange with decades of practices and developments, reflected through his ideas as well as signature style in paintings. To this moment, his works in exhibition are still looking to develop even more towards the “bright light of the universe.”
