Tiffany & Co. is probably one of the most well known jewellery brand in the world. One look at the its signature blue box, and the name Tiffany & Co. would come to mind. The company has built a strong brand, and has established itself as an arbiter of style and taste. Its strength lies as much in genius marketing as in producing superb quality jewelries. When the company was founded in 1837, its initial branding was “stationery and fancy goods emporium.” Initially, the company sold a variety of stationery products, under the name “Tiffany Young and Ellis”. The company iterated and changed their branding when they discovered that their market niche was jewellery, not stationery. At this time, in 1853, the company changed their name to “Tiffany & Company”. Tiffany first achieved international recognition at the 1867 Paris World’s fair. The company was awarded the grand prize for silver craftsmanship, the first time that an American design house had been so honoured by a foreign jury. Tiffany was the first American company to employ the British silver standard (92% pure). Largely through the efforts of Charles Lewis Tiffany, this standard was adopted by the U.S. Government. In 1878 Tiffany acquired one of the world’s largest and finest fancy yellow diamonds from the Kimberley diamond mines in South Africa. Under the guidance of Tiffany’s eminent gemologist, Dr. George Frederick

Kunz, the diamond was cut from 287.42 carats to 128.54 carats with 82 facets, which gave the stone its legendary fire and brilliance. Named the Tiffany Diamond, the stone became an exemplar of Tiffany craftsmanship. The legacy of Tiffany design is richly told in the annual Blue Book Collection, featuring Tiffany’s and the world’s most spectacular jewels. Initially published in 1845, the Tiffany Blue Book was the first such catalogue to be distributed in the U.S. The signature Tiffany Blue colour has distinguished the catalogue’s cover since 1878. Another stroke of marketing genius was when Tiffany introduced the engagement ring as we know it today back in 1886. Previously, diamond rings were set in bezels. But Mr. Tiffany’s ring was designed to highlight brilliant-cut diamonds by lifting the stone off the band into the light. This famous ring was named the Tiffany Setting. Even to this day, a little box in their signature Tiffany Blue still brings pitter patter to every woman’s heart. When Paramount Pictures released the iconic Breakfast at Tiffany’s back in 1961, the company’s profile was further boosted by the film.

Most of us have tendencies to collect things, be it things that have sentimental values to us or pretty trinkets that makes us happy. Sometimes we get carried away and find ourselves with a collection. However, having a collection and being a truly bonafide collector are two completely different things, especially when we’re talking about high ticket items like jewels. Perhaps being a collector means there is intent and purpose behind the act of collecting, that one is curating a collection that tells a story. Perhaps there is an art to collecting. Mr. Ignatius Birawa Dharmaputra is a self-proclaimed jewellery connoisseur. In his professional life, he is a Managing Director of a property based company. However, he admits to being a magpie even as a child, attracted by the shiny precious jewels that seem to be calling out to him. As a young adult, armed with thick skin and a fiery passion to learn more, he was relentless in his pursuit of more knowledge in this field. Whatever he lacked in formal training, he more than made up by his tenacity in pursuing his passion. Poring over books and absorbing all the informations he can get on the subject, he also trained his eyes by going around jewellery shops where he learned through practice. He has been honing his skills for decades and is now a renowned expert in the field. Mr. Dharmaputra believes that in order to become a true collector, it is essential to possess these three qualities: money, eye and knowledge. While the first needs no further explanation, the second and third requirement are something that takes time to cultivate. “A lot of people nowadays are buying paper, I always look at the item first before the certificate,” he said. Something that looks exceptional on paper might be mediocre in real life. Hence it is crucial to educate oneself in order to spot these exceptional items. A textbook knowledge has to be accompanied by keen eyes, something which has taken Mr. Dharmaputra decades to cultivate.

According to him, jewelries make for an excellent investment as long as you do it properly. In this era of economic uncertainties, he emphasised that it is of utmost importance that people start to diversify their investment portfolio. He provides an airtight argument as to why jewelries make for a worthy addition to anyone’s future investment. Not only is it easy to store and maintain, the demand for fine jewels always trumps the supply available. As they are produced by nature, the supply for these jewels are uncertain and a lot of sources are no longer available. While it is not a fast moving investment like property, history has proven that jewelries make worthwhile longterm investment. Not all jewels are created equal. In order to curate a collection that not only make sound investment, but also create a worthy spread, it is important to know what to buy. Rarity is key in making a jewel a worthwhile investment. There are three main categories of jewels: diamonds, gemstones and pearls. Diamonds can be categorised into white and coloured diamonds, as well as by their cuts. Coloured diamonds is considered a better investment due to their scarcity. Gemstones mainly refer to emerald, ruby and sapphire. The origin and treatment of a stone influence the price significantly, where the untreated ones are much rarer and more expensive compared to the treated stones. Meanwhile, pearls are either natural or cultured, with natural pearls being the rarest and most precious. Mr. Dharmaputra believes that these stones are the basis to a complete collection for anyone aspiring to be a legitimate collector. However, when it comes to smart investment, his advice is to purchase untreated gem quality coloured stones rather than diamonds because their scarcity would ensure their value. Aside from these stones, one can also collect finished jewels. It is important to consider the maker. Signed pieces from famed jewellery designers, especially in their signature styles,

are considered the most desirable. For example, Cartier is renowned for their Panther design and Van Cleef and Arpels is famous of its mystery setting and zip necklace design. An aspiring collector must also be educated on the period of the piece. As a general rule, the older the piece, the more precious it becomes. Historical pieces are considered the most desirable of all. Throughout history, humankind have been known to become obsessed with jewels. While some stones may derive a high price tag simply from their cut, carat weight, clarity and colour, other stones can derive an astronomical price tags because of their provenance. Provenance means that the stone once belonged to a famous person, and has a history behind it. As with works of art, provenance proves vital to the desirability and therefore value of a jewel. While considered lower in value when compared to historical pieces, most provenance pieces are also highly desirable. A recent example of this is The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor at Christie’s New York back in 2011. The auction was one for the history book because of the unprecedented result, with prices skyrocketing tens of times above estimation. Needless to say, these exceptional items are not something that can be bought off any shop in the malls. Due to their rarity, it takes efforts and patience to find the right pieces. Mr. Dharmaputra recommends starting at auction houses such as Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Phillips and Tian Cheng. Other good places to hunt for that special piece are prominent jewellery houses such as Graff, Moussaieff and Harry Winston and also selected international jewellery exhibitions such as Hong Kong, Basel and Vegas. Building relationship and trust with these institutions is imperative in order to secure the jewels of your dreams. And when you’ve found that special, one of a kind piece, a true collector will hold on to it at any price because it is priceless. Curating a personal collection that you can be proud of takes time and effort, and according to Mr. Dharmaputra, the quest is never ending. A true collector will always be on the lookout for the next exceptional piece to come along and be the magna opus of your collection. Your collection will become your life’s work and in return the glittering facets of these jewels will bring brightness to your life.

VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Refined Glamour

Van Cleef & Arpels is a French jewellery company, known for its graphic collection of floral designs in jewelries, watches and other artistic creations. When Estelle Arpels, the daughter of a dealer in precious stones, met Alfred Van Cleef, the son of a stonecutter, it was the beginning of a love story that would have an enduring legacy more than a century later. The young couple married in 1895, bound together by their pioneering spirit and shared passion for precious stones. The following year, Estelle’s father, Salomon Arpels, helped Alfred start a jewelry business In 1906, after the passing of Salomon Arpels, his son Charles Arpels and son-in-law Alfred Van Cleef founded the Maison of Van Cleef & Arpels, a boutique in Paris’ Place Vendôme. They were among the first jewellers to settle in the highly coveted locale. Their original boutique had an exceptional location— right across the street from the Hôtel Ritz, which was a magnet for European aristocrats and important American business and industry tycoons. This is the start of a name that would become synonymous with the most exquisite jewellery in the world. The successful Maison opened boutiques in holiday resorts like Deauville, Vichy, Le Touquet, Nice, and Monte-Carlo, attracting the most stylish trendsetters as customers. One of the first standout pieces by the company was a bracelet with red and white roses, fashioned from rubies and diamonds. It won the grand prize at the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts in 1925. The extraordinarily innovative “Mystery Set,” a technique whereby the stones are set in such a way that no prongs are visible, was patented by Van Cleef & Arpels in 1933. Still practiced today, the manufacture involves the production of a single clip, taking more than 300 hours to create. Only a very small number of master jewellers have the expertise to execute this intricate setting. Mystery Set pieces are extremely rare; only a few are produced each year.

Princess Grace of Monaco is a loyal customer to the brand. She loved the Maison so much that in 1956, Van Cleef & Arpels was named the Official Supplier to the Principality of Monaco. Princess Grace collected Alhambra necklaces in the malachite, coral, and tortoiseshell variations. The Alhambra collection was one of the Maison’s signature designs. Its emblem signifies luck, love, fortune, and good health. The first long Alhambra necklace was made in 1968 and the emblem is incorporated into many different jewellery pieces today and remains an iconic staple of Van Cleef & Arpels. Another one of the brand’s most well known collection is their zip necklaces. The Zip Couture necklace is a distinctive element in Van Cleef & Arpels Collection, with a ribbon of rubies, emeralds and sapphires. THE HOUSE OF MOUSSAIEFF Hidden Treasures

The world of jewellery is one not only of remarkable designs but also of remarkable individuals – men and women of exceptional passion, focus, expertise – sometimes even genius. Alisa Moussaieff and her husband, the late Shlomo Moussaieff, are two such individuals. Shlomo Moussaieff was of Bukharan descent, he was the grandson of the wealthy gemstone trader Moussaieff from Uzbekistan. After a tumultuous youth, he moved to London in 1963 and opened his first jewellery shop in the lobby of the London Hilton on Park Lane. They soon attracted a loyal clientele who came to admire the house for its exclusivity, its discretion and above all its truly magnificent gems. A second London boutique, on Bond Street, followed in 2006. Sales increased in 1967 when wealthy Arabs from Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf began to buy jewellery in London. Together this husband and wife team oversaw the transformation of a small family firm into a global jewellery business with a reputation for dealing only in the very finest and rarest gems, and for creating jewels that are sought after by royal families and heads of state as well as by the most discerning collectors and connoisseurs. Montblanc presents two new evocative chronographs - the newly reworked Star Legacy Collection with its inspiration drawn from the Minerva heritage and the company’s pocket watches that were made during the late 19th century and early 20th century. Continuing the journey into classical fine watchmaking, the crowns stand out with their recognisable and easy-grip onion shape, adorned on the side with the recognisable Montblanc emblem. The pure silvery-white dial contains balanced proportions between the aesthetic elements and the timekeeping functions. It features redesigned black Arabic numerals, classic blued leaf-shaped hands, a refined filet sauté guilloché and a unique railway minute track that encircles the dial and counters. The Versace logo is the head of Medusa, a Greek mythological figure. The logo came from the floor of ruins in Rome that the Versace siblings played in as children. Gianni Versace chose Medusa as the logo because she made people fall in love with her and they had no way back. He hoped his company would have the same effect on people. The Versace brand is known for having flashy prints and bright colors. The company announced in 2018 that it would stop using fur in its collection. Donatella Versace’s iconic brother was posthumously awarded a tribute at Milan’s Triennale Museum. Inspired by her late brother Gianni’s work, Donatella selected directly from archives the key prints and pieces from the years 1991–95, the period that saw some of Gianni Versace’s most iconic collections: Vogue, Warhol, My Friend Elton, Icons, Baroque, Animalia, Native Americans, Tresor de la Mer, Metal Mesh, and Butterflies. Redesigned, the blouses, square-shouldered jackets, leggings, catsuits, corsets, trenches, mini sheaths, and maxi skirts were stunning. Similarly affected were the high-waisted jeans, logo tees, fanny packs, and jeweled stiletto boots. One piece—a black-and-white ball skirt worn originally by Naomi Campbell in the Native American collection (Fall ’92)—was literally from the archives as the work on it was such that it could not be replicated in time for this show (where it was worn by Natasha Poly). Naomi did make an appearance in gold chain mail (Metal Mesh, Fall ’94), flanked for the finale by Carla Bruni, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, and Helena Christensen,

to the chorus of George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90.” This show was impossible to review in terms of the clothes because history had judged them at this point and they were winners one and all. Gianni Versace’s genius was evident and attested by friends and rivals alike. Supermodels would ask to be forgiven if they failed to wear any of his prints

and quite so because he set the standards where few could follow. The bejeweled starfish belt? Stunning! And there were strong-shouldered stretchvelvet dresses in the gentlest of pastels—mint, blush pink, sky blue—palette cleansing and immensely relevant, the colors and silhouette of this season (yet first shown 22 years ago). In a world where Italian Futurism meets tropical travel, the 2018 Collection emerges in a swirl of Caribbean color and flavor. Shades of ocean blue wash against seafoam green, coral pink and sand, as the silhouette drapes off the shoulder, nips at the waist and blooms into full skirts. In a graphic play of diaphanous layers, the symmetry of stripes and checkerboard patterns is seen throughout. Knitwear is used throughout, as an underpinning for the collection, worn underneath dresses and shirts, also combined with shirts. BOTTEGA VENETA Women’s New Challenges

A deep sense of contrast defines women’s ready-to-wear. The mix is extravagant yet practical. Silhouettes are clean and utilitarian, with echoes of workwear in patch-pocket jackets. The long dresses even look like oversized T-shirts said Tomas Maier, Creative Director at Bonetta Veneta. The visually delightful studding of jewels, mirrors and metal eyelets used throughout is labor-intensive, each one painstakingly placed by hand. From the subtle intrecciato embroidery inside the sleeve of a blouson to the overt geometric applique of ayers and nappa leather on a buttoned cardigan. Elsewhere, fringe is strung with tiny glass beads, exotic skins are used in applique and trim. Other materials include crisp cotton drill and pique, cashmere suede and anaconda. The lively palette extends to handbags. The BV73, a top-handle bag inspired by a 1973 style found in the archive, is recast in hand-painted python and dappled carrara calf in dahlia, mist and camomile. It’s crafted to be nearly weightless. Another debut is the Palio group, adorned

with colorful checkered panels of contrast intrecciato. The three styles—a Messenger, Tote and Cross-Body—have a signature soft construction, and are highly functional with multiple straps and pockets. The Knot family has been updated with three-dimensional craftsmanship in bags such as the Wing-Tip City Knot, the Spheres Clutch Knot and the Komodo Knot. The Piazza is new in a multicolored ayers patchwork. Women’s Jewelry harkens back to Regno d’Italia when the Veneto region was ruled by Napoleon’s stepson, and Empress Josephine’s style was all the rage. The cuffs, rings, necklaces and earrings are detailed with a technique of enamelling over intrecciato engraving, and stones of chalcopyrite and gray cubic zirconia Shoes are more the fashion item than afterthought. The S-Class embodies luxury at the highest level of Mercedes-Benz, and the latest S-Class series were launched at Mercedes-Benz STAR EXPO 2017 event at Ciputra Artpreneur, Lotte Shopping Avenue Jakarta. In celebration of Qatar National Day, the Founder of the State of Qatar to the rule of the country H.E Sheikh Jassim bin Mohamed bin Thani, along with ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Republic of Indonesia H.E Ahmed bin Jassim Alhamar hosted the reception ceremony on 18 December 2017 at Dian Ballroom, Raffles Hotel Jakarta. Both Indonesian and Qatar national anthem were sung to officially open the event, followed by a speech by Minister Mrs. Sri Mulyani and H.E Ahmed bin Jassim Alhamar. A sword was given to Mrs. Sri Mulyani as a symbolic gesture, witnessed by the attendees including Mr. A.M. Fachir and Mr. Alwi Shihab along with a number of ambassadors.

The wife of the Ambassador as well as her companions and fellow artistes and art lovers gathered together to grace the occasion of a Fashion Show cum Jewelry exhibition called ‘Treasure of the Heart’ at Galeri Hardiprana’s location at 30 Jl. Kemang Raya. Artistes present included Putri Pare Setiawati, Agnes Budisurya, Wanita, JIL & Sahara, Culture Edge and Marista Santividya. The exhibition displays artworks of four renowned Mexican artists including Betsabee Romero and Maria José de la Macorra in installation, Enrique Rosas in digital art, and Alfredo de Stefano in photography. The opening was held on 29 November 2017, with opening speech by National Gallery of Indonesia spokesperson Mr. Tubagus Andre, followed by Ambassador of Mexico to Indonesia H.E. Federico Salas. Asosiasi Galeri Senirupa Indonesia (AGSI) Pop Up Fair and Saumata held their opening celebration officiated by Budi Lim and hosted by Cosmas Gozali, Lina Koswara, and Carissa Widjojo at Saumata Apartment, Alam Sutera, Tangerang. The event also featured a fashion show by Batik Chic and Amanda Rahardjo. Contemporary arts from six AGSI members were exhibited, including from Andi’s Gallery, Art:1 New Museum, Can’s Gallery, Puri Art Gallery, viviyip artroom, and Edwin Gallery by Edwin Rahardjo – the president of AGSI. The art exhibition was held from 25 November to 10 December 2017 with local brand bazaar and workshop available every weekend.

Badan Ekonomi Kreatif Indonesia (Bekraf) or Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy hosted a press conference for Salone del Mobile Milano 2018 on 11 January 2018 at Djakarta Theatre Building. The event is an international promotional platform for creative workers and local products. The event will be held in a space of 147,019 m2 in Milan Fairgrounds, Rho, showcasing over 1,257 exhibitors with over 363,000 visitors from 165 countries worldwide. The Broadway held a bazaar at ANZ Tower Sudirman Jakarta, which sold both new and preloved branded goods with affordable prices. The Broadway Bazaar invited Yayasan Hati Suci for social causes to collaborate. Some of the goods were donated from Yayasan Hati Suci, which proceeds went to support the organization’s programs.
