Patek Phillippe 175 Years of Glory

Tracing the arc from there to Patek Philippe’s 175-year anniversary, in which period the Genevan manufacture has co-written, co-designed, and co-measured a third of the history in this category of timekeeping instruments. Patek Philippe has pursued its core business without interruption since it was founded on 1 May 1839, and has always been a privately owned company. To this very day, Patek Philippe is domiciled in Geneva and headquartered on Rue du Rhône in the heart of the city, in a building it has occupied since briefly after the company was first registered. From the very start, the manufacturer has been a player in the very top league of watchmaking artistry – in haute horlogerie with opulently decorated and highly complex creations as evidenced by the exhibits in the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva’s Plainpalais district. An extensive account of the history of Patek Philippe was published in a book form in 2015, subdivided into three chapters that correspond to three decisive epochs: Inceptions, accession of the Stern family, and the present. Chapter one is about the company’s founder and the ascent of Patek Phillipe, from year 1839 to 1932. Antoni Norbert Patek was fascinated with Geneva’s watchmaking

heritage from the very outset, and also with the complementary artistry of the engravers, enamellers, and jewellers. He first started Patek, Czapek & Cie – Fabricants à Genève with different partners in 1839, but despite the company’s success, later in 1844 he had to look for a new partner, whom he met at an industrial exhibition in Paris, Jean Adrien Philippe. The company adapted a new name Patek, Philippe & Cie in 1851 and later become one of the world’s most sought-after timepiece brands. Patek not only acquainted the world with his watch brand, but was also an ambassador for Geneva. Philippe, on the other hand, manufactured the models and the on-going improvement of production processes, as well as the development of new models and mechanisms. He concentrated on perfecting his keyless winding and hand setting system that relied on a crown in the pendant of the pocket watch and was protected by French patens, he was granted two further patents for additional enhancements of his crown winding and hand setting system. The fact that even contemporary wristwatch winding mechanisms essentially follow his design concept shows how progressive his idea was. During the exposition at the London Crystal Palace, in 1851 Patek Philippe captures the fancy of Queen Victoria with its creations. She acquires the dainty pendant watch No. 4719 with diamond roses on blue enamel for herself as well as pocket watch No. 3218 with a chronometer escapement and a quarter-repeater for her beloved husband Prince Albert. In 1916, Patek Philippe sells the first grand complication ladies’ wristwatch No. 174 603 to D.O. Wickham in New York. It is a dainty platinum watch with a fiveminute repeater. Thus, Patek Philippe’s first wristwatch with a chiming mechanism is a ladies’ timepiece. While in 1925, Patek Philippe presents its first wristwatch with a perpetual calendar through model 97 975. Patek Philippe had a year full of milestones in 1927, when the brand first produced wristwatch chronograph regularly, based on a 13”

ébauche from Victorin Piguet; crafted a split-seconds chronograph wristwatch for a left-handed customer; delivered James Ward Packard’s astronomical pocket watch called ‘The Packard’ No. 198 023 and a Lépine pocket watch No. 198 014 with a minute repeated and a music-box alarm. In Chapter two, it describes Patek Phillipe in the beginning of the Stern era from year 1932 to 1989. The company took new stakeholders due to “Black Tuesday” on 29 October 1929 when stock prices on Wall Street plummeted – as a result, the Stern brothers introduced a new management philosophy that refocused the manufacture. Under the third Stern generation Philippe Stern, Patek Philippe developed the most complicated portable timepiece in the world to commemorate the 150th anniversary: the Calibre 89 with 33 complications, which is still unexcelled to this day, while in 1951, the brand released Ref. 2499 wristwatch with a perpetual calendar and moon phases. Chapter three talks about Patek Philippe’s position in the present, from 1989 forward. After having spent 40 years passionately and circumspectly assembling his extraordinary private collection, Philippe Stern was finally able to inaugurate

the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva’s Plainpalais district in 2001. In 2002, the company invested in a new “Patek Philippe Advanced Research” department focused on novel materials and avant-garde technologies. Thierry Stern succeeds his father Philippe Stern as the fourthgeneration president of Patek Philippe in 2009, the year in which the brand premiered the Ladies First chronograph Ref. 7071. The new Ref. 5204 split-seconds chronograph with a perpetual calendar and the proprietary calibre CH R 29- 525 Q was introduced in 2012. The manufacture’s most complicated wristwatch, an intricate ensemble of 686 individual parts, is re-launched in 2013 as the Ref. 6002 in a “Rare Handcrafts” case of equal complexity with relief engravings as well as cloisonné and champlevé enamel on the dial.

Mrs. Uci Flowdea

Living the High Life

Success is nothing if you are not making the most of your life. This philosophy of life indeed reflects that of Uci Flowdea, a successful entrepreneur from Surabaya. With her hard work and perseverance, she made her way climbing to the top with her wood business that she started from scratch. Her successful venture in exporting woods has penetrated markets in many corners of the Mainland of China. The type of wood that she provides is the rare and very expensive one. “It’s sonokeling. This hard-to-find wood is very pricey, but is of great quality. You can make a range of products from this wood, such as piano, guitar and furniture,” Uci asserts. At the moment she is focused on exporting the wood to major regions and cities in China, “as the country provides favourable markets for the wood products,” says the entrepreneur who is fluent in Mandarin. Her wood business, which she commenced in 1996, is based in Pandaan, Pasuruan, East Java. “I deal mostly with men in the business. You know most of carpenters and business players in the wood industry are males. On one side, it’s a challenge for me as a female in the male-dominated sector. On the other, I enjoy running the business and my passion for it gets bigger and bigger. I have survived the business for over two decades, and thank God the business is sustainable with the growth that exceeds my expectation,” admits Uci who also owns a café in Bali.

In order to live her life to the fullest, Uci always makes the most of every opportunity that awaits. “This means that you have to be pro-active and eager to strive for success.” Her assertion reflects her willingness to spread her wings into venturing in the film industry. She has produced a number of films including the latest one, Perfect Dream. Released last year, the film tells a story of Surabaya socialites. Life is not all about work, as Uci’s life is coloured with exciting hobbies and activities. She likes bags and is into Hermès as her favourite brand. She got an array of Hermès bags in her collection list. “The models and colours are the aspects that got me into collecting the bags.” Dressed in black when having a chat with Registry Indonesia in Jakarta, she says that the colour is elegant. Yet, she loves others such as blue and red. “You should see the collection of my Hermès bags. There are different colours that are worth an appreciation. Indeed, every colour has its own beauty to show.” For Uci, living the high life should not be separated from living in God’s way. The mother of two actively holds a prayer fellowship in her house. Blessed with outstanding voice, Uci is also a gospel singer who has released an album called Pemilik Hidupku (the Owner of My Life). “It’s very important to live in the right path. I believe that God is always with us, and it is our duty therefore to live in His way.” Life is a God’s gift that everyone should appreciate, she adds. For that reason, Uci

Cover story Jan-Feb 2018 ok.indd 27

sees that appreciating life should include her grateful and enjoyment of what she does. In this case are her businesses, bag collection hobby, music, fellowship and whatever activities that she conducts in her life. And travel is one activity that she sees as a way of appreciating things that God has given. Sometimes, she likes travelling with her own private yacht, as she admires the beauty of beaches from many parts of the world. “With travel, I see many different cultures and people. Thank God that I have travelled to many corners of the world.” The world is very colourful, and Uci opts for sharing her fortune with others. This is reflected by her regular visit to social foundations and her regular charity activities. “I have visited those in needs, ranging from those who live in the slumps under the bridge, to those who are scavengers. It’s not enough just to be grateful of what we have. It will make us even better if we can share a bit of our fortunes to the needy.” Committed with the ability to manage time is her recipe in building her business. “First you have to be committed with what you have started. That’s how I started my business. It’s not easy to start a venture from scratch. You need to have that commitment or otherwise you will fail. Next is a good time management. You need to have a good scheduling in making appointment, be it with clients or business colleagues,” she says concluding the interview.

Buccellati

Originality and Excellence

Tradition, skills and excellence in handcrafting, creativity and the highest quality materials are the values that have always been central to Buccellati. The long-established family firm creates premium Italian-designed jewellery, which consistently preserved its stylistic identity. Since Mario Buccellati’s early career in 1919, he was always inspired by the style of ancient periods and Renaissance era, however instead of imitating it, he combined it with his interest and attraction for the Venetian art. Through the course of decades, Buccellati craftsmanship and tradition can be found today in all the jewels, watches and silver pieces, all executed with top level techniques and fine hand-engravings recognized worldwide. Buccellati presents the one-of-a-kind creations inside the Unica collection that offers exclusivity, high quality materials and savoir-faire dating back to the Renaissance goldsmith’s techniques. The definition of luxury means more than just exhibition and status, it also aims at increasing one’s personal pleasure – which Buccellati and its Unica collection are aware of since the beginnings. The collection is a message of tastefulness and capacity of choice, rich in quality, high aesthetics, rarity and culture. All the creations inside the Unica collection have a name and a story that characterises them, giving each a personality and timeless background. Large pendant/brooches with beautiful designs

and central stones, bib-necklaces ready for a queen and then rings, earrings and bracelets, all with a special inspiration. The brooches including Raggio di Sole: a white and green flower shaped piece complemented with rose gold leaves, Icaro: a violet coloured wings butterfly, Polissena: a white adorned with pink butterfly, and Tulipa: a tulip flower inspired piece. Teodolinda pendant earrings symbolize elegance with the pair’s royal tones such as gold, blue and maroon. Blue Bird pendant earrings come with calmer tones of white and clear blue, for those who prefer a subtler yet still highly elegant pair. The five creations composing the “Timeless Blue” collection that marvelled all the attendees at the New York store event in January 2015 are now part of the wider Buccellati Unica collection and recount their singular origin and inspiration. Light Blue Sea at Prout’s Neck is a bracelet from the Winslow Homer painting, a water scene whose windswept waves were transformed into white gold cuff adorned with diamond-studded lines. The Spider’s Web is an oversized yellow and white gold fine jewellery ring. Deux Vases de Fleur, or Two Vases of Flowers pendant symbolizes the shape of a floral pendant and seven yellow blooms. Another two creations include The Fall of Phaeton and Storm on the Coast of Belle-Ile. www.buccellati.com

Boucheron

Sparkling Winter Wonderland

Maison Boucheron was founded in 1858 by Frédéric Boucheron and has continued to evolve ever since under the leadership of four generations of his direct descendants. Boucheron was the first jeweller on Place Vendôme and its visionary designs have made the Maison a byword for excellence in jewellery, high jewellery and watchmaking. Boucheron now has more than 55 retail outlets around the world and is part of Kering Group, a world leader in the luxury, sport and lifestyle sectors. Boucheron introduces Hiver Impérial collection embodied in a collection of diamonds, pearls and precious stones, inspired by the aura of the Far East’s vast stretches of snow-covered land. The Maison brings three main themes from these regions: Nature, Couture and Architecture. Lumière

36

de Nuit depicts the ideal aesthetic of the North’s stunningly unique brilliant white polar landscape. Femmes Boréales celebrates the strength and beauty of women in wintry climates, contemporary empresses and queens, wrapped in pearls and precious stones. L’Anneau d’Or, or the Golden Ring, offers a panoramic view of the rooftops, cupolas and onion domes of Russia’s ancient princely towns. Femmes Boréales harks back to the traditional dress and imperial jewellery sets lavishly embellished with pearls, diamonds and precious stones that have been given modern flair for contemporary queens. The chapter consists of Baïkal bodice front with aquamarines floating like blue islands representing the lake of the same name; along with Perles

Australes and Nevesta that epitomise the elegance and refinement of haute couture. In 1858, pearls were the height of luxury and refinement. They could be worth more than diamonds. Their radiance fascinated Frédéric Boucheron, who spent over 10 years searching for the most stunning mother-of-pearl to make an exceptional necklace of natural pearls for the love of his life, Gabrielle Boucheron. Baïkal is an imperial bodice front adorned with more than 2000 Akoya pearls. To ensure the maximum comfort of a jeweller’s touch, the multiple strands are strung on silk thread and connected with aquamarines, moonstones and diamond slivers that tie together the set’s elegance and style. The studio created a ribbon of aquamarines beads corseted on the back of the necklace so that it can be adjusted as needed and lies perfectly on the neck. Perles Australes is classic Boucheron with an ever-more creative interpretation. The pearl Pompon necklace is a brand new version of the twisted chain, this time in mother-of-pearl and diamonds, while Nevesta draws the eye to a stunning 9.29-carat pear shape diamond clearly poised to become the latest classic.

CHAUMET EST UNE FÊTE A Timeless Symphony

With Chaumet est une fête, the Maison pays tribute to the Parisian taste for an alchemy that conjures enchanted occasions; sparkling guests and the elegance of a jewellery parure. A Parisian Maison, Chaumet is inspired by four places beyond its borders; emblematic music venues that, akin to Paris, are lauded all over the world. In honour of the mythical Glyndebourne, Pastorale anglaise offers a breath of fresh air and British nonchalance with jewels of the utmost refinement in a bucolic setting. Aria passionata calls upon the repertoire of the great Italian operas of Milan’s La Scala to inflame the passions of queens of the night with incandescent red. The Metropolitan Opera of New York, imbued with the sleek elegance of the Upper West Side, exalts its great musical moments with Rhapsodie transatlantique’s palette of soft colours. At the Vienna Opera, Valses d’hiver is an ode to the lightness of Strauss’ waltzes, embodied by the purest whirl of grace and wonder. The collection reveals a selection of exceptional stones: Muzo emeralds, pigeon-blood rubies, magnificent sapphires and natural pearls, singularly

combined with fine stones. Generous bowknots, incandescent draped effects, a firework of pastel colours, and threedimensional whorls are featured throughout the sets. As the Maison’s characteristic feature, the art of composition also lies in the combination of different motifs or effects. Fils couteau and millegrain techniques, articulated assembly of the jewels and masterful settings give lightness and suppleness to the pieces. The edges and contours of the pieces have also been worked on with powerful refinement, strongly defined and

polished to a mirror effect on Valses d’hiver collection. The whirl of pearls and diamonds of the Valses d’hiver creations evokes the movement of flounces and laces twirling to the rhythm of vivacious dance steps. A triumph of delicacy and curves; a tiara, a transformable necklace, a brooch, a bracelet, a jewellery watch, four rings and four pairs of earrings caress the skin like shimmering veils, their iridescence exalted by the millegrain setting technique. The set embodies soft and radiant parure that captures the elegant enchantment of youth.

Alain Prost

Richard Mille Innovative Cycling Necessities Alain Prost is an artist in the realm of speed, just as Richard Mille is an artist of timekeeping. The collaboration between the brand and the four-time Formula 1 World Champion, co-founder of the Renault e.dams team resulted in the all-new RM 70-01 calibre tourbillon, featuring an unprecedented odometer – inspired by a shared interest in cycling. The model is limited edition to 30 pieces. Following extensive discussions with Alain Prost, as well as other cyclists, Richard Mille realised that many of them would be hard pressed to say how many kilometres they’d ridden since the beginning of the season. The RM 70-01’s totalizer remedies this by simply displaying the overall distance travelled. The pusher at 2 o’clock can

42

select any of the 5 rollers of the odometer, whose readout is visible in a titanium window. Once a roller selected, pressing the pusher located at 10 o’clock advances the roller by one. The only effort required of the user is to add the day’s distance to the prior total. The first pusher activates selection of a roller, one of the five. Execution is confirmed by perfect alignment of the two yellow arrows. The second pusher incrementally rotates the roller, which automatically blocks, thanks to the carry mechanism. To avoid accidental manipulations, the complication has been fitted with a neutral position (N). Equipped with a 70-hour power-reserve, visible at 5 o’clock thanks to an indicator powered by a planetary differential, this manual winding

tourbillon calibre sports a baseplate and bridges in grade 5 titanium. Nods to the realm of cycling abound, from the titanium Allen screws that fix the bridges, to the barrel ratchet, which recalls the design of forged wheel spokes, to say nothing of the tourbillon cage and dynamometric crown, evocative of a bicycle’s pedal. Machined out of Carbon TPT®, the case perfectly combines tonneau, rectangular and asymmetrical shapes. Taut and curved, its unique lines not only ensure the greatest possible comfort when

worn on the right wrist, but also optimised legibility of the time when gripping a cycle’s handlebars. In order that they may fully enjoy the dynamic and mechanical qualities of the RM 70-01, each buyer will receive as a gift their very own bespoke road cycle. Developed by Alain Prost and Richard Mille in partnership with the prestigious Italian bike maker Colnago, these individually numbered bicycles are made by hand and painted in the watchmaking brand’s colours.

JAQUET DROZ A Journey to Paradise

Jaquet Droz has presented its line of exceptional automaton watches since 2012, and now the brand unveils the latest piece inspired by a tropical landscape. Embracing the beauty of nature, the new Tropical Bird Repeater watch features animated birds and other creatures, bringing natural objects into wearable artwork. The Tropical Bird Repeater is limited to 8 unique pieces: the Maison’s tutelary number. It plays on the contrasts between the exuberant dial and the green alligator strap, as well as the onyx dial displaying hours and minutes, magnified by the smooth reflections of the red gold case. Like Gauguin’s exotic paintings, this is an invitation to faraway places and delights for the senses. The Tropical Bird Repeater watch brings

44

together all the watchmaking and decorative expertise of the brand known by its two stars. Piece destined for discerning collectors, the Tropical Bird Repeater is part of a long history at Jaquet Droz, honouring the Enlightenment-era passion for nature and animals of founder Pierre Jaquet-Droz. Automatons, along with the Ateliers d’Art, represent two of the eight codes of the La Chaux-de-Fonds manufacture, hand-decorated by professional engravers and miniaturist painters. These codes are indispensable to the creation of this scene with its flamboyant colours that emerge like a lush oasis on a mother-of-pearl dial, itself enclosed in a red gold case adorned on the sides of its lugs and on the middle band with an animal motif hand-engraved by the brand’s craftsmen.

A true source of life, the waterfall offers serenity to the blooming tropical flora and fauna. At the heart of this Garden of Eden, its water flows eternally in perfect realistic fashion. In the centre, a hummingbird hand-carved and hand-engraved by the Maison’s artists moves towards a shrub of bright orange birds of paradise. A one-of-a-kind animation in watchmaking history, its wings beat up to forty times a second, adding incredible realism to the scene. To the right, a peacock with intense blue

feathers veritably opens and closes its tail, while a toucan emerges from the palm leaves at 3 o’clock to open its beak. The dancing flight of three elegant dragonflies, located at 9 o’clock, adds to the magic by day or by night as their tiny SuperLuminova®-coated wings glow in the dark. In all, seven animations that may exceed twelve seconds allow for up to 4 different scenarios, all the more striking as they contrast with the suspended background of the scene.

and dashboard controls. Adorned with 47 jewels, the piece is also completed with calendar, and is water-resistant to 100 metres. The exceptional “motorisation” takes the form of a Manufacture Breitling B06 calibre officially chronometer certified by the COSC. This movement entirely developed and produced in the Breitling Chronométrie workshops is distinguished by its ingenious “30-second chronograph” system inspired by a 1926 Breitling patent, with a central hand completing a full sweep of the dial in half a minute; thus, ensuring extremely accurate readings of times to the nearest eight of a second. Screw-locked crown ensures its resistance and safety, while sapphire

crystal is cambered to perfectly fit the angle, and the piece glare-proofed on both sides. This world-exclusive feature is highlighted on the black dial by the blue “30-second chronograph” inscription and measuring scale, picking up the subtle shades of the case. To accompany driving accomplishments over long distances in both comfort and style, the Bentley GT “Dark Sapphire” Edition is fitted with a rubber strap – specially created for this model and bearing the same diamond motif as the dial – secured by a push piece-operated folding clasp. A Grand Tourer on the wrist is available in a limited edition of 500 pieces.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN A Vintage Comeback

The Spring-Summer 2018 Alexander McQueen took inspiration from the quintessential English gardens of Great Dixter: uncontrived floral planting, meandering borders and tangles of vibrant, exuberantly coloured blooms. Drenched in rain, warmed by sunlight, the wardrobe consists of longcherished, worn-and-torn couture inspired pieces and bespoke men’s tailoring, deconstructed and reconstructed concept is reclaimed. Alexander McQueen woman may be dressed in weather-beaten waxed jackets, vintage blue denim, oversized sweaters embellished with keepsakes from her grandmother’s jewellery box. And while her history informs her present, she is mindful of the nature that surrounds her, secure in its healing powers and its potential for the future. Deconstructed gabardine trench coats are panelled with rosebud silk jacquards. Softly corseted, ruffled knit dresses with fifties lingerie detailing are cut away at the waistline; some have looping crinoline skirts. A bone leather coat is pieced and patched with quilted floral and striped mattress silks. Bonded plongé leather peplum jackets are worn off the shoulder and over raw-edged leather skirts embellished with gold and silver hardware. Wool silk cavalry twill riding jackets and coats with a masculine shoulder are panelled with checks and layered over raw-edged leather trousers. Oversized, slashed mouliné knit sweaters are embroidered with heirloom brooches.

Checked silk cotton kilt dresses are deconstructed and buttoned to the throat. Pleated glass organza gingham and floral print dresses are worn over a soft cotton tulle corset. Tailored suits in varying scales of houndstooth have a broad shoulder, exaggerated, rounded hip and cropped, kickback trouser. Silver leather is embroidered with white garden flowers. An exploded deconstructed vintage denim jacket is worn with a pieced skirt hemmed with antique floral handkerchief cotton. Transparent glass organza dresses are printed with layers of roses and explode with pleated necklines and full, tiered skirts. A tuxedo dress coat in black wool silk and a silk faille corset dress

have draped ruffle flower skirts. A silk wool tuxedo jacket with exploded rose taffeta sleeves is worn with kickback tuxedo trousers. Deconstructed heirloom dresses are shredded and cut in a mix of floral jacquard, washed organza and silk tulle. Inside-out skeletal taffeta gowns are embroidered with trailing, three-dimensional blooms. Multi-coloured flowers and pearls are trapped in the transparent heels of high shine buckled boots. The Box Bag is quilted in patent leather with contrast stitching or studded with metallic hardware. Frame bags are quilted and embroidered with birds and flowers. Silver and gold chokers, bracelets, cuffs and earrings are finished with clusters of charms in crystal and pearl.

GUCCI

Act of Resistance

For the Spring-Summer 2018 collection Gucci found inspiration from “The Act of Creation as an Act of Resistance.” Creation is a poetic act. It’s an eruptive process emerging from a magmatic core inhabited by urgencies, ghosts and desires. A whirl in which the stream of being thickens delivers fresh meanings. An explosion that makes vital strengths, which were once trapped, finally released. Such revolutionary act produces tectonic slides. It breaks up the encrustations of tradition; denatures what appears consolidated; produces displacements and questionings. In this sense the act of creation, as Deleuze would say, is also, and above all, an act of resistance. The collection embodies this exercise of resistance. Each garment vibrates with an intellectual tension that resists homologation. It is a revolt against fixedness, and a revolt for an inalienable right to claim difference. As Camus asserts, the revolt challenges the existing in the name of what is missing but could be. In this regard, the challenge with the possible is at stake. Gucci’s creative director Alessandro Michele

52

shared his philosophy on the collection: “Go into the store and you don’t just recognise the season, you recognise the world. I want to stay here and grow beyond seasonal change.” Resist acceleration and its obsessive panting that risks shattering life. Resist the mantra of speed that violently leads to loosing oneself. Resist the illusion of something new at any cost. There’s no simple strategy to adopt. It requires the courage to slowly linger; to stay with care; to give oneself up to a story to dig deep, with a wide and graceful breath. That is what the collection does, refusing to turn the page and stubbornly dwelling on a narration that consolidates in the beauty of the slow. The night of the world is evoked by Heidegger. Resist the dark that

drowns difference and the conformism that despotically annihilates a multiple becoming. Resist the all alike that sentences. Evoking, conversely, the possibility to define ourselves as irreducible singularities. To take it as involute identities that rise against fixed categories, classifications and lethal boundaries. In this sense, what is produced is a joyful hymn to selfdetermination. It’s the celebration of the freedom to decide about one’s own body and life. An invitation to be yourself: the only true transgression that ensures us to get closer to happiness. In this frame, Gucci offers a phenomenology of the dissenting spirit. The collection is a map of signs to learn to poetically live the world, going beyond its contingency and standardising monotony.

Dior

The Art of Scenography

During her research in the Dior archives, Maria Grazia Chiuri, artistic director of the women’s collections, had her interest piqued by a series of photographs of Niki de Saint Phalle. On one of them, the artist can be seen on a camel, on others, she’s posing for Dior during the tenure of her great friend Marc Bohan, then creative head of the House. Embodying the beauty of her time, more adolescent than androgynous, small and fiery, she exhibits a style of dressing that’s both iconic and personal, and current in its proportions and whimsy. Her life is the stuff of literature. “As in all fairy tales, before finding the treasure, on my way I met dragons, witches, magicians and the angel of temperance,” says Niki. At the time of the liberation of women, Niki threw herself into a close relationship with art, the world and herself. Like all artists, she was driven by her emotions. This feminine creativity that speaks to Maria Grazia Chiuri and left her wondering why have there not been great women artists. It is necessary to give these different and specific artists their due, for it’s they who break the mould of the traditionally male discourse in art history, and in fashion. These are the Nanas, sculptures of extraordinary women, but also the multi-coloured hearts, the dragons, the tree of love, and the exaggerated and over-the-top masterwork, the Tarot Garden in Tuscany, which become patterns, broken embroideries and mirror mosaics in Maria Grazia Chiuri’s collection and the show scenography.

For Dior Spring-Summer 2018 collection, Maria bravely took Niki’s exuberantly colourful palette and made it dialogue with lace, silk, leather or plastic. This collection, inspired by the artist, also makes reference to Marc and his little dresses and jumpsuits, sometimes teamed with full skirts opening at the front. There are also large polka dots, black and white checks, trousers worn with ordinary or safari jackets, and teamed, according to mood, with men ‘s shirts featuring fine stripes or polka dots, or of a romantic white: all borrowings from the vocabulary of Marc. Finally, the collection’s atmosphere and references, whether explicit or implicit, lead us into the shameless excitation of the Sixties, illustrative of the changing forces of these female universes. They change not only fashion, but also the contemporary world.

Max mara

Nature Inspired Elegance Max Mara shares a Baudelairean view of the city; its landscape a living breathing entity, its mood swings restless, fleeting, transient, often unpredictable. But when the summer sun strikes, things are pretty certain to take a sybaritic turn. The smarter cosmopolites seek out discreetly luxurious oases, shady patios and hidden gardens. Business and pleasure blur, with the promise of al fresco breakfast, sundappled working lunches, garden parties and well-earned crepuscular cocktails. The settings for those happy rendezvous are staged by a nouvelle vague of philosopherscum-gardeners. ‘Work with, not against nature’ urges Gilles Clément. So, out with the overblown peonies, the exigent roses and vexatious lilies, in with the branchy meadow flowers, happy-go-lucky poppies alliums and cardoons. He allows them to grow in unruly drifts -a neat foil to the sun-baked sidewalks and concrete canyons of the cityscape. Max Mara Spring-Summer 2018 is a precisely calibrated wardrobe for the hedonistic citizens of this modern terrain. There’s lean tailoring in stone, black and white, sometimes executed in organza to reveal the inner workings in layers of transparency, as sharp as the midsummer play of sun and shadow on urban architecture. To complement the subdued elegance of those exclusive pit stops, a sand-on-sand heritage logo motif, dating from the company’s early days, woven into a trench or printed onto a leather jacket. To echo the colours of those up-to-the-minute parterres, this season’s must-have mauves and a street-smart take on floral; delicately painted sprays, as fresh as the evening dew. The urban ne plus ultra -the trench coat re-emerges as a crisp linen spolverino and

a sassy pencil skirt. There are natty little mannish coats and jeans jackets to wear with boy-cut pants, all designed with an eye to understated elegance. For a spot of drama, there are ankle-grazing skirts: buckled kilts in gauzy linen for everyday, and for dressier moments, georgette, pleated and cut into strips that flutter seductively. A set of suit and trousers, with oversized

bag and heels all in a white based, floral pattern of yellow and purple tones. Complete with soft outsize bags and sleek clutches in all the patterns and prints of the collection, and this season’s Iris sunglasses, Max Mara’s latterday flâneuses are perfectly accoutred to savour the summertime city’s delights.

Hugo Boss

Channelling Creative Spirit

The brand HUGO always stands for progressive looks with individual attitude. It offers contemporary design for both business and leisure. Calling upon the spirit of the artist, Hugo presents its new men and women SpringSummer 2018 collection with a fashion show at Pitti Uomo in Florence. The collection’s inspiration began with voodoo symbolism, leading to a focus on its art, its expression and the artist as an individual. Referencing photographs of artists such as Basquiat and their natural expression of style, the look this season is inspired by the creative spirit, wearing the most precious clothing in a non-precious way. With its DNA of unconventional fashion, the brand draws on the artist as an outsider who sees things from a different angle and thinks differently – bringing this same attitude to dressing. Many pieces in the collection itself serve as a canvas. Artistic prints created in collaboration with designer Charles Jeffrey feature on delicate men’s mesh T-shirts and women’s sheer hand-painted silk organza dresses, contrasted with chunky paint splattered sneakers and throw-on work wear jackets. In shape and tailoring, the collection draws inspiration from the first Hugo collection, in 1993. Silhouettes are easy and loose with ankle-length, body-skimming slip

58

dresses, oversize outerwear and relaxed trousers, while suit designs are seen through a new lens with stripped-back constructions and exaggerated proportions. Elsewhere, the balance of tailoring is completely reworked. Suit jackets and shirts are designed to fall forward and drape off the body, turning traditional cuts and fits on their head. A number of pieces are created to be unisex – take a soft-cut pyjama suit, an oversize tailored jacket or belted overalls. For Spring-Summer 2018, Hugo plays with accessories. Men’s bags are blown up to giant size and sneakers feature thick, chunky soles. Conversely, women’s bags are scaled down to miniature proportions, while ultra-long earrings, or a string of pearls worn along the length of a finger, add a playful touch. The collection’s colours are taken directly from the painter’s studio: neutral tones of white, beige and khaki are splashed with a palette of bright tones, including blues, yellow and signature Hugo red. The brand transformed an old factory in Florence as the Hugo artist took over. Lit by hundreds of candles, every surface was covered in creative output – sketches, writings and paint strokes appeared everywhere, from the floor to the walls of the show space. After the show, musician, producer and visual artist M.I.A. gave an exclusive performance to the audience.

BERLUTI

A Reinvented Palette

It has been more than 120 years since Alessandro Berluti put his name on the House’s first creations. From the very beginning, Berluti has stood apart through its unique combination of technical skill and creative flair, firmly grounded in bespoke know-how. Although some things have changed with the times, that artisan spirit remains the same. For every new chapter in the history of Berluti, the brand continues to challenge the boundaries of craftsmanship and to transform the rules of style. A photo by Erwin Blumenfeld inspired Berluti Spring-Summer

60

2018 collection. The acclaimed American-German photographer was famous for his experimental double-exposures and reworking of colours until they morphed into abstract delights. He was unique in his ability to nuance colours, creating subtle new hues of “gorge de pigeon“, “rose grisé” and “ambre acides,” combining them with a delicate artistry that Cecil Beaton described as “infinitely touching.” This Berluti collection then is the story of a reinvented palette where traditional summer hues are seen through a modern and dynamic lens. The perfecto has been refined thanks to an icy

blue or milky white bonded leather lining. Raw seam finishes are softened by colouring the hems, a technique that brings to mind the leather savoir-faire of the Maison. For the Spring-Summer 2018 collection, the bomber jacket is made of Ottoman leather. The light cashmere coats are seen in a variety of cool tones to wear for summer. Silk punctuates all the silhouettes: a jersey silk tank top, the lining of a jogging pant or a silky band on a trouser. Haider Ackermann plays with the codes of the materials and twists these inspired casual pieces.

Bags take their inspiration from a sensual desire for tactility. A tote bag in double-faced leather is black on the outside and dove-grey on the inside, while a day bag becomes a weekend bag thanks to its adaptable volume. Its strap looks like an alligator belt with a soft nubuck touch. In reference to the emblematic Alessandro Oxford shoe, we find a soft nubuck flat slipper made of one single piece of leather, while boots feature a lower cut than previous seasons. The patination of the footwear palette is both a continuation of the Maison’s heritage and an ode to Blumenfeld’s experimental techniques.

BVLGARI A Regal Elegance

Inspired by the world’s precious blooms, Bulgari has recently launched the new Magnolia Sensuel as the latest addition to the Splendida Bulgari collection following the success of the most iconic flowers in the history of perfumery: the iris, the rose and the jasmine. Master Perfumer Jacques Cavallier captures one of the shortest yet most intense blooms in nature into a fragrance to last forever. “The magnolia is a note, a magnificent flower with large petals that rise up as if they were reaching for the sky. A unique fragrance, so special that one always remembers the first time it has been inhaled. An unforgettable note,” as he put the scent into words. The Master Perfumer treasures the natural scent of the regal flower, shading from airy and fresh exhalations to mysterious and sensual allure. Its complex and generous nature is harmonised with the pure spirit of

68

noble and subtle ingredients: “I have paired the magnolia with flowers, fruit, wood and spices. These fruits are the essence of mandarin from Sicily, an eternal mandarin, a rich note that is fruity, fresh and floral. A mandarin emphasized by orange blossom that expresses itself in two ways in Magnolia Sensuel: a distillation, yielding neroli essence and an extraction, resulting in orange blossom absolute. The first top notes are sparkling and sunny and the second are velvety and ultrafeminine, endowing the heart of the perfume with a highly luminous presence that enhances the natural floral character of magnolia. The base notes embody sensuality with patchouli heart essence that I have used to extract a very mysterious woody note, which is both feminine and powerful. The patchouli imprints a slightly Chypre allure on the fragrance that takes on the spicy sensuality of vanilla.”

Drawing its inspiration from the magnificent gardens of the Italian Renaissance, the Magnolia Sensuel bottle is shaped evoking the majestic geometry of architectural hedges and the gently curved lines reminiscent of romantic flowerbeds. The noble shade of purple red tone was the colour of gods and Roman emperors, abundantly used when the Eternal City shone

with colour, at the peak of its imperial power. In Bulgari’s garden of gemstones, the shades of magnolia are reminiscent of the luminous beauty of rubellite. The colour of this charming gem is the epitome of seduction, as its components are red, rose and violet, a harmony of hues that embodies the joy of life and sensuality.

REGISTRY PREVIEW

H. MOSER & CIE. Essence of the Tourbillon In the Endeavour Tourbillon Concept, H. Moser & Cie. has extracted the essence of this complex mechanism with both technical and aesthetic appeal, combining it with the minimalist approach characteristic of the Schaffhausen-based Manufacture to emphasise the visual impact of the tourbillon. The Endeavour Tourbillon Concept is an ode to simplicity in white gold with the famous Funky Blue dial. Powering the latest HMC 804 automatic calibre movement, the oscillating weight transfers the energy to the barrel via a bi-directional pawl winding system. Made from 18-carat solid red gold, the oscillating weight is skeletonised to reveal the mechanism beneath.

BMW MOTORRAD A Pure Performance The HP4 RACE is a masterpiece of engineering prowess. Each one of the 750 limited-edition racing machines was handmade by the brand’s specialists and fitted with a numbered marking. The frame of the HP4 RACE is made of endless carbon fibre and is a continuous component from the steering head to the swing arm pivot, saving a full four kilograms in weight, and is available in three different colour choices including Light White, Racing Blue metallic, and Racing Red. It produces 158 kW (215 HP) and the maximum rotational speed was increased to 14,500 rpm. The maximum torque of 120 Nm is at 10,000 rpm.

PATEK PHILIPPE Graphic Elegance The new Ref. 6006G Calatrava is one of Patek Philippe’s debuts for Baselworld 2017. It has an analogue date and a seconds sub dial, features that pay special tribute to the calibre 240 movement’s 40th anniversary. Notwithstanding the stringency of its graphic design, the dial has a subtle tongue-in-cheek eccentricity. This time window is framed by a broad, mirror-polished bezel as befits a classic Calatrava case in 18K white gold, while its sapphire-crystal case back presents attractive views from any angle. The shiny black Alligator strap with large square scales complements the distinctive elegance of the watch and is secured with a fold-over clasp in 18K white gold.

Aston Martin Award Winning Automobile

Standard-bearer for an all-new generation of cars, DB11 is the most powerful and efficient DB production model in Aston Martin’s history. Available as a Coupe with the 5.2-litre twinturbocharged V12 or the 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, DB11 takes grand touring heritage to unprecedented heights. DB11’s V8 and V12 twin-turbo engine choices both offer a combination of exceptional performance and improved efficiency. Intelligent cylinder bank activation makes it the cleanest, most fuel-efficient DB ever. The V8-powered Aston Martin DB11 won the “Best coupe for more than £50,000” category at the 40th annual What Car? Car of the Year Awards on January 2018. The Aston Martin DB11 is credited with turning around the fortunes of the British luxury carmaker when it was launched in 2016. The 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 version came along last 2017 and was an immediate success. Steve Huntingford, editor of What Car? said: “The DB11 has always been an impressive car, but the addition of a V8 engine makes it better than ever. This new variant feels even sharper than the V12 because it has less weight in the nose, yet it still offers fantastic performance and the blend of comfort and luxury that prestige coupé buyers expect. It’s quite simply the best car of its kind.” Aston Martin president and CEO, Andy Palmer said: “It is always gratifying to receive recognition from within the automotive industry. We are very proud of the success of the DB11. The DB11 is the most complete and sophisticated car Aston Martin has ever made and now, with this new V8 engine option we have broadened its appeal. The V8- powered DB11 is a remarkable Aston Martin.” The V8 engine propels the DB11 from 0 to 62mph in just four seconds and produces 510PS (503BHP) and 675Nm of torque. This light, compact and characteristic power unit has

been tailored by Aston Martin engineers to provide bespoke air intake, exhaust and wet sump lubrication systems. Lighter and more compact than the V12, the engine is mounted as low as possible in the DB11 for an optimised centre of gravity, creating an incredibly agile sports car. The DB11 V8 looks virtually identical to the previous V12 model. But under that thrusting hood is the thundering 4.0-litre twin-turbo V-8 developed by AMG. From the very first corner the steering is noticeably more responsive than in the DB11 V12. Less weight over the front axle does make a difference, but the 2 per cent rearward shift in weight distribution means the yaw centre of the car, the vertical axis about which it turns, is more rearward and closer to where driver sits, enabling users to better feel what the rear axle is doing. The rear shock rates have been stiffened, along with the bushes for the rear sub frame and the rear camber link, improving both lateral and vertical support.

The Aston Martin DB11 models benefit dynamically from the Curlicue. Derived directly from the brand’s race cars, Curlicue is a gill-like vent incorporated into each front wheel arch lining, extracting high-pressure air and reducing unwanted front-end aerodynamic lift. On the DB11 Coupe, the Aston Martin Aeroblade™ harnesses airflow along its flanks and through its integral C-duct feature to enhance stability at the rear. Effortlessly potent, DB11’s engine choices deliver a rich and characterful sound all the way to 7000 rpm. Three driver-selectable dynamic modes enrich its performance; switching between GT, Sport and Sport Plus will adjust the intensity of the drive. A contemporary twist on classic style, hi-tech materials like Cuprum Carbon Fibre are used alongside traditional leather trim in Copper Tan and Bitter Chocolate. Arden Green evokes past glories of Racing Green for a modern look steeped in history.

The new S-Class celebrates its Indonesia première with extensive innovations, and among the highlights is a new and efficient engine with a series of new technologies starting January 2018, totalling of six different S-Class body variants in the current Indonesian market. “The S-Class embodies luxury at the highest level of Mercedes-Benz. Our discerning customers in Indonesia are very much looking forward to the latest introduction of our flagship, the new S 450 L,” said Roelof Lamberts, president & CEO of PT Mercedes-Benz Distribution Indonesia. The new Mercedes-Benz S 450 L comes with a V-6 engine producing 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm. The new biturbo engine delivers its power economically and smoothly, yet it consumes less fuel than the predecessor model. The new 9GTRONIC transmission with nine speeds features outstanding comfort and barely noticeable gear changes. Modern luxury in the new S-Class is manifest in maximum quality of materials and workmanship. The new S-Class is fitted with a new radiator grille, comes with three twin louvers as well as vertical strips with a high-gloss black finish and additional vertical strips chromefinish in the radiator grille. In conjunction with the new multi-beam LED headlamps, the S-Class features three distinctive torches of light as an exclusive design element. The front bumper with pronounced air intakes enhances the dynamic appearance. All models are fitted with a redesigned lower bumper section with integrated visible tailpipe trim.

The tailpipes are framed by a chrome trim element, which spans the entire width of the vehicle. The interior of the new S-Class is characterised by the two new highresolution displays, each with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. Visually, the two displays under one shared glass cover blend into a wide-screen cockpit and as a central element consequently emphasise the horizontal orientation of the interior design. Like the instrument cluster, this widescreen cockpit contains a large display with virtual instruments in the direct field of vision of the driver as well as a central display above

the centre console with three different display styles: classic, sporty and progressive. The new S-Class has touch-sensitive buttons in the steering wheel that respond to swiping motions like the screen of a smartphone and enable the driver to control the entire infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel, or simply be operated by Linguatronic voice control. The ambience lighting creates emotionally appealing contrasts and structures the interior into levels with 64 colours, ten colour worlds and three different lighting zones.

Revolution by Driade

The high-end Italian brand Driade presented their latest collection themed Revolution for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2017 furniture show. Driade chooses the Renaissance - one of the most fortunate and creative periods in history - to represent itself. But the company also looks at the present and at what it imagines the future to be like. The word Revolution is designed with mirrored letters that make up the word ‘love’ in reverse. Well-constructed and complex, the collection tackles different topics without distractions – some of which integrate and complete the hints left by the brand’s last edition for dining spaces. Driade, a kaleidoscope of colours, images, ideas, impressions and heritage offered to the world, was primarily established as a creative gesture of love.

82

This collection by Driade starts an important new chapter in which it will be starring on a stage established around five decades ago called “aesthetic workshop”. Driade acknowledges the sensitivity of home and living in terms of functionality and aesthetic languages for those who live and spend time in it. Each item is designed like a piece of puzzle, a neologism that interacts with others due to shared identities and appreciation in the strength of beauty, innovation and comfort. Fenix sectional sofa by Ludovica+Roberto Palomba is the theme characterizing typological design since the 90s of last century emphasizing the sense of suspension from the ground. Park Associati, Filippo Pagliani’s and Michele Rossi’s architecture firm have contributed the new Lampsi chandelier with led light source and diffuse light. Anapo

by Gordon Guillaumier coffee table has its inspiration lies in the Sixties and in a specific idea of middle-class home torn between rigour and softness. An exercise in refinement and essentiality, the Megara sofa by Gordon Guillaumier features a round backrest that smoothly flows into the armrest and creates a refined detail just before meeting the seat. Meanwhile, consisting of an array of light points, the Lucky Star by Maurizio Galante Tal Lancman’s shape may be playfully altered by a simple hand gesture, from a geometric form to random dispersion.

Sereno by Fredrikson Stallard exudes energy like that of abstract expressionism, within the materials and forms themselves. Garçonne by Carlo Colombo is a sofa boasting wide and generous shapes; its soft and large cushions in leather or fabric are bounded by slim, gently curved armrests completed by the armchair. Finally, Ping by Giuseppe Chigiotti is a collection inspired by small objects in ancient houses, to serve rather than to expose. He designed two versions, Ping I being a polished aluminium holder and Ping II being a small table.

rights to both Fazioli and Blüthner – respectively regarded as the luxury of the piano world. Their current Canadian location, Piano Vertu was founded in 2012 – in that time, Max and Helen have sold, delivered and serviced over 600 pianos, which decisively earning them the title of market leader in eastern Canada. Helen is a seasoned pianist who has had a lifelong passion for classical music. She was invited to perform in Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Paris, London and the US as a soloist and an accompanist. She cites Europe as she passionately explains, “Over there, high quality pianos like Blüthner which is handcrafted from Germany since 1853, and Fazioli, an Italian piano claimed by many as the best piano in the world today, are in fact passed down from one generation to another and increase its value with time. My vision is to build a historic milestone in Indonesia by creating the infrastructure together with the current classical musicians for young generation who studied classical piano abroad. The Grand Signature Pianos also produce classical CDs and concert

events that help aspiring classical pianists to exist in Indonesia.” One of the featured pianos is the M. Liminal by Fazioli. The shapes and colours are combined in asymmetric designs, simultaneously generating a composite and organic unit, as in nature. The M. Liminal design is dually inspired by music and the sea: the shape of the side evokes the profile of a wave while silver evokes the blinding mirror of the water illuminated by the sun. The red of the soundboard and black of the cast iron frame filter through the transparency of music stand reveal additional beauty and strengthening the feel of movement. Paolo Fazioli first came up with the concept in 2006, and he sought architectural realization from a French architect Philippe Gendre. Despite having unusual materials for construction such as stainless steel, aluminium and Plexiglas to realise such complicated concept – M. Liminal was ready after three months of work just in time for Cannes Boat Show in France. The name M. Liminal itself was chosen in reference to something that is placed above the upper

The base is aligned with the barycentre of the instrument that houses the pedals. Another luxurious creation by Fazioli is the F212 Malachite, featuring inlays of natural and coloured exotic wood, mother of pearl and semi-precious stones. Malachite proudly features complex designs, mouldings and arabesques made of Malachite stones and walnut wood. Lucid Piano by Blüthner is a perfect addition to any sophisticated home. It combines the beauty of modern acrylic design with the excellence in performance beyond expectation. Each Lucid Grand Piano is handcrafted to the client’s specification no matter how complex it would be. to each client, guiding every step of the way. Automatic Piano Players System and LED Illumination can be installed upon request. Lucid Piano Elegance Rose uses the Blüthner patented Aliquot stringing method therefore enhances the quality by providing more depth to each note and creating a fuller sound. The use of acrylic, rather than wood provides stability against humidity and brings the design into the 21st century. Unique designs coupled with Blüthner’s attention to detail, allows the brand to craft exceptional instruments that carry the name of a brand that has perfected the piano production process during its 160 years of existence. The manufacturing process starts with the heating and moulding of the acrylic for both inner and outer rims, followed by the assembly of the supporting beams. The soundboard and cast iron frame are then fitted on the inner rim, which will support the basic structure of a grand piano – a Blüthner guaranteed production quality and product authenticity.

Samuel A. Budiono Musical Architect

Architecture and music are inseparable in the life of Samuel A. Budiono, as he blends the two different worlds in harmony. Like composing a song, he uses melodious forms, harmonising with nature, and soulful rhythmic patterns as the inspiration to design his innovative architectural masterpieces. “Music has greatly influenced me in designing the work of architecture. An architecture needs to be designed as a dynamic and visually stimulating building. Music Architecture becomes my trademark of my approach to bind together composing in music and designing in architecture.” In the world of music, Samuel himself is a jazz pianist and composer. The award-winning architect has released a number of record albums, conducted solo performances, and played with some of renowned jazz musicians like Donny Suhendra. “Jazz is about improvisation and I see architecture as a jazzy world. It’s about freedom to explore ideas and innovate new things,” Samuel asserts. His assertion is evidenced by his unique projects, some of which have been bestowed with prestigious awards and recognitions. Stairway From Heaven & Ahava Chapel in Bandung, West Java is one of his proud projects and has won HDII Award. In this project, Samuel impressively has transformed his musical talent into building a soulful multipurpose site, dubbed one of the most unique with strong theme in the country. Agropark, located on the hillside of Pandaan in East Java is another proud project that distinguishes Samuel’s brilliant work with others in the realm of modern architecture. The winner of World Architecture Awards, the project is surrounded by breath-taking rice fields with the building that features accent on the green, which is uniquely designed like ‘staccato’, a series of sharp sound in music. The uniqueness of this project is also seen from its elevated main floor on top of the ground that resembles a tribune. Heading to Surabaya, Samuel has built a milestone that characterises his innovative savvy with his creation of MSC School. “It’s not an ordinary school. Asides from the presence of an auditorium and a library, the school in its design features ‘X’ symbol that represents the adjective ‘eXcellence’. This in line with the theme of the building: “From embryo to excellence.” With this school, I wanted to construct a building that conveys a meaningful message.” In Jakarta, Favour@Central now stands sumptuously as

104

an auditorium that facilitates various types of event. The project won the World Architecture People’s Choice Award in Barcelona. “With the use of LED lighting, you will see the light moves and the colour changes at intervals. And I call it: “The Singing and Dancing Wall,” Samuel says with a smile. Over a warm chat in a South Jakarta’s prime area, Samuel recalls his past where he had to choose between architecture and music as the major in his academic pursuit. He eventually took the former, and later saw himself earn both Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees from the School of Architecture at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, USA. He has also participated in various architectural trainings from Europe Study Programmes in France and Germany. “I believe that I made the right decision to further my study in the field of architecture. I grew up with jazz music while I also developed my childhood hobby in drawing different types of building and house. I wanted to be an architect, and with music, I could always play it anytime,” says Samuel who admires American jazz pianists Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett and Herbie Hancock. Asked about his role model in the world of architecture, he exclaims excitedly, ”Frank Gehry, he’s in his late 80s and still creating iconic projects!” Despite his success, the first project that Samuel involved upon his graduation was very challenging. With an avuncular smile, he recalls, “I was encountered with the owner of Milwaukee Bucks who happened to be a jazz lover. We got good chemistry, and he got me to involve with this project that sadly ended up with a public hearing. They demanded an American to do the project. The trial lasted for two years and finally I won; they let me did the project.” Later Samuel moved to California and got a big project in South Africa. “It’s a government-to-government project in Botswana. They didn’t have anything at that time and they wanted to introduce the country to the world. So it’s an iconic project. The place is called The Lost City.” Fast forward, Samuel now runs his eponymous architectural firm, SAMUEL A. BUDIONO & ASSOCIATES in Jakarta. While concluding the interview, Samuel talks about what he and his team would like to pursuit today and in years to come: “I always keep music and architecture as partners while creating more architectural works like composing songs. My philosophy: ‘Composing in architecture is like designing in music’.”

Redefining Cultural Boundaries

Misty Mountains by Li Huayi (B. 1948) Rebecca Wei, Christie’s president Asia says, “The excellent results this season reinforce Christie’s position as a cultural leader, as we hosted a truly global mix of Asian and Western art, exemplified by the enthusiastic reception for the worldwide launch of the Peggy and David Rockefeller Collection. The force of Asian buying was on full display this week, in line with what we have seen throughout 2017, as collectors pursued masterpieces across all our categories, propelling iconic artists to new international levels. Highlights from the Hong Kong autumn sales include Fine and Rare Wines featuring a Superb Collection Part II on 25 November and the top lot of the sale was two magnums of Henri Jayer, Richebourg 1985.
