The Fed eral Correct ions Com p lex ( FCC) com p rises four p risons, rang ing from A DX, t he m ost secure, t o t he b asecam p, t he low est securit y level. The p harm acist s at FCC Florence run clinics for d iab et es, d yslip id em ia, hyp ert ension, hep at it is C, HIV, and m ed icat ion-assist ed t reat m ent ( MAT) for op ioid use d isord er. They p ract ice und er collab orat ive p ract ice ag reem ent s and w ork ind ep end ent ly w it h p at ient s, m aking clinical d ecisions reg ard ing p rescrip t ions and t reat m ent chang es. During m y six-w eek A PPE, I had t he op p ort unit y t o m eet w it h p at ient s and m anag e t heir care on a w eekly b asis. One of t he m ain challeng es m y p recep t or and I faced w as access t o t he p at ient s. Correct ional m ed icine p laces t he p riorit y in corrections b efore all else. For exam p le, w hen a unit g oes on lockd ow n it m eans no inm at es are allow ed t o leave t heir cells even if t hey have an ap p oint m ent at m ed ical t o see p harm acy. W hen t his hap p ened m y p recep t or and I w ould p ack a b ackp ack w it h a b lood p ressure m onit or, d iab et ic t est ing sup p lies, and a cooler of vaccines and Sub locad e ( b up renorp hine) inject ions. W it h t hese sup p lies w e w ould t ravel t o t he various unit s, d elivering care cell by cell. At t im es, t his m eant ad m inist ering vaccines t hroug h t he food slot s at t he low er p art of t he solid st eel d oors. Much of t his rot at ion is focused on p ub lic healt h; w orking w it h inm at es necessit at es an und erst and ing of t he healt h d isp arit ies and challeng es t hey face b ot h in and out of p rison. In p rison t here is d ifficult y counseling on lifest yle chang es for m anag ing hyp ert ension and d iab et es. There is no op t ion t o chang e t heir d iet b ecause t hey d o not have a choice in w hat t he kit chen m akes. Sim ilar t o w hen t he facilit y is on lockd ow n, p rison lim it s t he t im e and sp ace p at ient s have t o exercise. Once out of p rison, it is oft en very overw helm ing t o t ry and reest ab lish t heir role in t he com m unit y and even m ore d ifficult t o find insurance and a p rim ary care p rovid er.

The p rog ram has b een g oing on since 20 15, and inm at es here p rovid e round -t he-clock care t o t hese d og s, t eaching t hem skills in m ob ilit y service, m ed ical alert ness, and hearing assist ance. This not only serves t he com m unit y b ut also t eaches valuab le skills t hey can use for w ork w hen t hey are released . This rot at ion w as an ext rem ely uniq ue exp erience, and I enjoyed every d ay. The first t raining focused on inform ing facult y and st aff. Reg is Universit y inst alled naloxone nasal sp ray ( Narcan) at aut om at ed ext ernal d efib rillat or ( A ED) st at ions across it s cam p uses. The m ove is in resp onse t o t he alarm ing rise in op ioid overd ose d eat hs, p art icularly in t he Denver area w here fat alit ies have surg ed over 30 0 % in recent years. W hile t here have b een no rep ort ed overd oses on Reg is cam p uses, t he p revalence of fent anyl, a p ot ent synt het ic op ioid linked t o m any overd ose cases, has p rom p t ed t he universit y t o t ake p revent ive m easures. Naloxone is a safe and easy-t o-use m ed icat ion t hat can t em p orarily reverse t he life-t hreat ening effect s of an op ioid overd ose, includ ing t hose caused by d rug s laced w it h fent anyl. The naloxone sp ray w ill b e st rat eg ically p laced at 23 A ED st at ions and t he Healt h and Counseling Cent er on t he Nort hw est Denver cam p us, w it h ad d it ional st at ions at t he Thornt on cam p us. Inst ruct ions on how t o use t he sp ray are p ost ed near each st at ion, and t he universit y p lans t o offer t raining sessions on recog nizing overd oses and ad m inist ering naloxone. Acknow led g ing t he seriousness of t he op ioid crisis, Reg is Universit y em p hasizes t he im p ort ance of carrying naloxone for anyone using illeg al d rug s or having friend s and fam ily involved in such act ivit ies. In line w it h Colorad o law, t he universit y assures t hat ind ivid uals act ing in g ood fait h t o ad m inist er Narcan d uring a susp ect ed op ioid -relat ed overd ose w ill not face civil or crim inal liab ilit y. W hile universit y p olicy st rict ly p rohib it s t he unaut horized p ossession and use of cont rolled sub st ances, it also em p hasizes a sup p ort ive ap p roach t ow ard st ud ent s seeking assist ance and coop erat ing w it h em erg ency p ersonnel in cases of susp ect ed overd ose or int oxicat ion.
