Department of Physical Therapy

Welcome from the Chair The Department of Physical Therapy is part of the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, the only free standing Rehabilitation Faculty in Canada. Over the course of our 50 year history, we have consistently been recognized for professional, scholarly and academic excellence and have established a reputation as one of the premier Physical Therapy programs in North America. Housed in Historic Corbett Hall on the University of Alberta Campus in downtown Edmonton, the Department of Physical Therapy is at the forefront of Physical Therapy education, practice and research. Annually, we accept the best and brightest students from across the country into our MScPT program. Through innovative teaching strategies, the incorporation of advanced technology and visionary and committed faculty, our program remains dedicated to improving the quality of care, preparing healthcare leaders for today and tomorrow and putting our scholarship into practice. Our faculty members are outstanding teachers as well as internationally recognized researchers and are committed to preparing physical therapists to enhance the health of persons within communities and the larger global environment. Our Department is also committed to life-long learning and as such, conducts annual continuing education opportunities that are designed to bring relevant contemporary programs to campus that combine an educational elective for students with continuing education for clinicians. Our yearly calendar will alert you to educational and social events.

Clinical Placement Information 2007—2008 The Department organized 505 placements for the 2007—2008 year for our students as well as for incoming Canadian & International students. ♦

Australia 3 students went here

Africa (Cameroon)

United States

PT Student on Placement in Cameroon, Africa Novice clinical placements continue to be challenging to secure but we successfully placed all novice students. The new Rehabilitation education consultant, a partnership between Rehabilitation Medicine and the Calgary Health Region, is starting to show signs of increasing placement capacity in the Calgary region. This is a slow process but we are hopeful that we will see bigger gains in the coming year. We continue to have a large number of offers for our intermediate and senior students from both the public and private sectors. The Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education (ACCE) continues to build bridges with the clinical community, regular meetings are scheduled with site coordinators in the Edmonton and Calgary regions, as well as visits to therapists in Home Living, Facility Living and the Aspen Health Region. Regional road trips are planned for the coming year to strengthen community ties.

New Developments 2007—2008 Clinical Simulation With the growing number of student enrolments and the challenges facing the health care system with respect to staffing it is becoming difficult to secure enough “cardiorespiratory type” acute care student placements. As a result the Department of Physical Therapy is looking at new and innovative ways to ensure that students get the training and exposure they need in order to graduate as competent practitioners in the core areas of Physical Therapy. The department purchased two medium fidelity patient simulators for students to practice their cardio respiratory and acute care skills. The simulators breathe with a rising chest wall; have breath and heart sounds and a palpable pulse with a measurable blood pressure. A simulation centre was set up to mimic the hospital environment which at some point may be opened up to the wider community for clinicians to brush up on their skills. One full critical care elective class has used this lab for skills practice as well as running plausible scenarios in which the students may find themselves out in the “real world”. The lab has also been integrated into at least one other course.
