Message From the Chair and Associate Chair It is our pleasure to bring you the 2012-2013 Annual Report from the Department of Physical Therapy, University of Alberta. Once again, this has been a busy and productive year for all of us. We hope you enjoy browsing through our accomplishments. Here are some of the highlights. Calgary Campus Opens: In September, 2012, we welcomed our first cohort of MScPT students (18) at the Calgary Campus. These students joined incoming cohorts in Edmonton (80) and Camrose (12), to be the largest in-take of students in our 58 year history. Classes are linked at the 3 sites via state-of-the-art videoconferencing. Preliminary findings suggest excellent student performance and engagement. Notably, our distributed education model has attracted the attention of the Alberta Government. We hosted a demonstration for representatives from the Government in October, 2012. Subsequently, we were invited and have submitted a proposal for permanent funding of the satellites. Internationally Educated Physical Therapists (IEPT) Training Program: In May, 2013, we launched the Alberta IEPT collaborative initiative with the College of Physical Therapists of Alberta, welcoming 17 students to the one-year program. This innovative 4-year pilot program is funded by Health Canada, and is directed by Professors Bernadette Martin and Barbara Norton. The program leverages our expertise in distributed education from the Camrose and Calgary MScPT Satellite experience, to prepare internationally trained physical therapists for licensing in Alberta. Research Productivity: Our research faculty members were again highly successful with external grant funding. New grants awarded this year to principal investigators in the Department of Physical Therapy totaled over $3 M. Moreover, our researchers contributed to the acquisition of over $13 M new grants, the publishing of 71 peer-reviewed papers, and 131 abstracts/presentations.

The Physical Therapy Department is committed to providing high quality education to its students. In 2012 the Department formed a Teaching Interest Group (TIG) to allow staff members to discuss teaching strategies and promote consistent instruction among the satellite campuses. Following it’s formation, the TIG expanded to include faculty from the other Rehabilitation Medicine Departments (SPA and OT). The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine TIG has been valuable addition for teaching enhancement within the Faculty. The principal reason for this is it has brought together faculty across Departments who share an interest in enhancing teaching within the faculty. The TIG has provided a venue to bring Rehabilitation Medicine faculty teaching leaders and external innovators together to directly benefit the FRM faculty and further enrich the educational experience for our students. The graph below uses weighted averages to summarize Student Ratings of Instruction for the courses taught by staff members in 2012-2013. Each statement in the evaluation is rated from 1-strongly disagree to 5-strongly agree; 5 being a perfect score. The questions on the student evaluations are separated into two categories: Course Specific (includes questions regarding course content and structure) and Instructor Specific (includes questions specific to the instructor’s knowledge and delivery).

Health Campus in Calgary is now online with new units opening each month. It is anticipated that this facility will be a new source for public practice placements. Six PT students completed their final placement in Solo, Indonesia in July and August 2013 and are the second cohort of students to complete their placement in Solo. The placement is primarily paediatric neuro-development but also involved treating patients with MSK and neurological impairments as well as teaching of Indonesian PT students. Two site coordinators’ meetings were held in each of Edmonton and Calgary with site placement coordinators and rehab managers to discuss issues related to clinical education, communicate PT program changes, and build placement capacity. The Edmonton meeting has teleconference facilities which allows for site coordinators from across the province to participate in information sharing and decision making. Jon Gabbai, Calgary Clinical Education Coordinator (CCEC), has been leading the Calgary meetings, with the ACCE attending via video conference. In addition, the CCEC has met with PT and Rehab leaders within the Calgary zone to discuss the opportunities for increasing placement capacity. A round world café forum was held in Calgary in December 2012 to meet with Allied Health leaders in AHS to look to solutions to address placement shortages for rehab students and provide support for clinicians. Both the ACCE and CCEC have shadowed students on clinical placements at sites in and around Edmonton and Calgary to increase the visibility of the Department in clinical sites. The main goals of the visits are to offer support to students and to observe them in situ, as well as connect with supervising therapists, build relationships with them and get a sense for student performance. The ACCE and CCEC have conducted supervision workshops as requested by specific agencies to assist with preceptor development and training. Clinical Education Works in Progress • Working with Community Service Learning at UA to develop additional opportunities for students to engage with community organisations and augment their clinical education in the form of elective opportunities. • The exploration of student elective opportunities within long term care facilities early on in the first year to facilitate student ease and confidence with communicating with patients. • Future exchange agreement with Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Memoranda of Understanding with Surakarta Polytechnic, Indonesia and Metropolitan University College in Copenhagen to provide greater opportunities for students wanting to complete international placement experiences. The MScPT Satellite on the Augustana campus in Camrose was launched in 2010 in response to the Government of Alberta’s forecast of significant shortages of Physical Therapists in the Alberta workforce. This pilot project was designed to test a distributed education model of program delivery as a cost effective alternative to developing new programs to meet workforce needs. Building on the success of the Augustana satellite, Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education provided funding to extend the Augustana pilot and develop an additional satellite program in Calgary. Beginning in September 2012, the Department of Physical Therapy offered the MScPT program at three sites in Alberta: Edmonton, Camrose and Calgary. Students at each campus complete the same core program of required courses by attending class via videoconferencing technology. Each location offers unique elective opportunities reflective of local expertise and community partnerships in addition to the online electives available to all students enrolled in the program. Preliminary findings indicate that the distributed education model piloted in Augustana and Calgary is very successful. Feedback from students, faculty and staff at all three sites is positive and students at satellites are performing on par with their counterparts at the Edmonton Campus. The Associate Chair of the Physical Therapy Department, Professor Bernadette Martin, leads a three year research project to evaluate the impact of the Augustana satellite project on student performance and engagement, instructor experience and community relations. Final results are anticipated in 2014.

The 2012-2013 academic year marks the third operational year of the Augustana satellite. This year the Augustana satellite saw the convocation of the inaugural cohort. The second cohort of students have nearly completed the program at Augustana and a third cohort has begun. Student feedback on the Augustana experience has been overwhelmingly positive. This is also the first year with the addition of the Calgary cohort. Satellite instructors devoted significant time in the summer and fall of 2012 to ensure the transition to a three campus program was seamless for the students. As the Augustana campus continues to thrive and grow, MScPT Coordinator, Lisa Jasper, became involved in the General Space Planning Process which will place the MScPT program in a new Augustana Science building. The new space will consist of the classroom, lab and seminar rooms necessary for the program as well as additional demonstration and storage space. The program will continue to make the space available to local clinicians to attend College of Physical Therapists of Alberta and Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine webinar series via videoconference and to Augustana Nursing students who utilize the technology to participate in InterD courses with students on the Edmonton campus. Additional partnerships with the Augustana Campus and Camrose community resulted in the development of several new elective opportunities for the Augustana Cohort of students this year. Physical Therapy Professor Chris Zarski also continued to provide services to the Augustana Vikings Athletic Program through the Physical Therapy Varsity Clinic in Camrose. The Augustana community has been very supportive of the MScPT program through the provision of clinical placements, student community electives, assistance in finding patients for student learning experiences, acting as standardized patients and assisting with practical exams.

In September 2012, the first MScPT Calgary cohort began their program at the Department of Physical Therapy’s Calgary Satellite. Housed at the University of Calgary’s downtown campus, the MScPT satellite students benefit from Campus Alberta inspired agreements that allow students access to many of the University of Calgary services. As with the Augustana Satellite, on-site faculty facilitate courses taught from Edmonton or Camrose and also teach back to the other campuses. Thanks to the preparatory work completed by satellite faculty and the Rehabilitation Medicine Technology Group in 2011-2012, the satellite is operating smoothly and students are immersed in their first year of the program. In June 2013, the Calgary satellite began to share its teaching space with the Alberta Internationally Educated Physical Therapy Bridging (AIEPB) program. The AIEPB program is a government funded pilot program operated through the Department of Physical Therapy. Building on the success of the MScPT program’s distributed education model, the AIEPB program offers students the choice of accessing the in-person portions of their part-time program either through the Edmonton or Calgary MScPT lab facilities. Like the Augustana satellite, the Calgary satellite also offers the use of the videoconferencing technology and learning space in support of College of Physical Therapists of Alberta and Faculty of Rehabilitation webinars. Initial feedback from students and faculty demonstrate that a three site model for the MScPT program is working well and the student experience remains positive. The Calgary Satellite is currently funded to accept a second cohort in 2014 and see these students through to completion of their program in 2017.

In 2011, the Department of Physical Therapy partnered with the College of Physical Therapists of Alberta (CPTA) to launch the Alberta Internationally Educated Physiotherapist Bridging Program (AEIBP). Funded by Health Canada, this pilot program is designed to provide internationally educated physical therapists (IEPTs) with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet Canadian credentialing requirements and practice in Canada. The AIEBP is the second program of its kind in Canada and has a unique delivery format and mentorship model designed to promote accessibility and integration across the province. In May 2013, the first cohort of 17 students was welcomed to the Edmonton Campus for a one-week bootcamp that introduced them to their instructors, mentors, classmates, library systems, program expectations and curriculum format. Following this introductory week, students returned to their home towns for the remainder of the program. The program structure is three academic courses followed by a clinical placement. Each academic course in the program follows a blended format consisting of: a series of two week online content modules; biweekly in-person practical labs at either the Calgary or Edmonton University of Alberta facilities; and 12 hours/month of mentor-led clinical experience at clinical sites. The Edmonton and Calgary on-site labs are connected via the Department of Physical Therapy video-conferencing systems so that all students may benefit from questions raised at either site. The pilot program is off to a great start. Current students have settled into the program format and are reporting a very positive learning experience. There is also great interest from IEPTs throughout the province, western Canada and internationally for admission to the second cohort. Both students and mentors have found the mentoring aspect of the program beneficial. Students appreciate the one-on-one guidance and discussions of the learning plans in relation to actual caseload make learning immediate and relevant. The mentorship model has also allowed part-time clinicians who weren’t able to supervise MScPT students to participate in clinical education and contribute to the growth of the profession. The AIEPB pilot project is currently funded to 2016 and is committed to graduating two cohorts of students. An evaluation plan is in place to monitor the success of the students and the program. Based on success to date, the Department is developing a sustainability plan and looks forward to transitioning the pilot into a permanent program.

The Corbett Hall Student Physical Therapy Clinic was launched in 2009-2010 with a multi-fold purpose of teaching, service and research. Students in the MScPT program provide treatment and rehabilitation under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist gaining valuable clinical experience in a learning environment. Within the clinic, students are also able to engage in related learning activities such as the production of educational videos for University Health Services. As a student clinic, nominal fees for service allow the clinic to provide a valuable service for under-served populations who may not be able to access AHS public or private clinics. Researchers are able to make use of the well-equipped facility to conduct clinical research and through the use of student research assistants provide rich learning opportunities. Building on the successful experience of the initial year of the Clinic, the Clinic Lead, Dr. Geoff Bostick, was able to secure a grant for clinic development and the Department worked with external consultants Myers Norris Penny to develop a Student Clinic Expansion Plan. At the close of 2012 a number of the pilot initiatives developed in the plan were implemented, such as moving from students attending the Clinic only in short term electives to hosting full clinical placements for students from the University of Alberta and from Physical Therapy programs across Canada. In addition, the Clinic partnered with the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation to provide a Varsity Clinic to treat University of Alberta Athletes. The Clinic continues to offer its two founding clinics: Mixed Caseload and Older Adult. Placements U of A MScPT Students U of A Students Canadian Students International Students PTA (MacEwan)

Psychological Influence on Low Back Pain: An Evidence Supported Review of Implications for Clinical Practice Presenter – Dr Steven George, University of Florida. Steven Z. George, PT, PhD is Associate Professor and Assistant Department Chair at the University of Florida, Department of Physical Therapy. Practitioners often view the psychological influence on low back pain as a dichotomy – either present and indicative of a referral or absent and to be ignored. In reality, psychological influence on pain is to be expected and there is potential that appropriate recognition of relevant psychological factors is necessary to obtain optimal clinical outcomes. This talk will a) review psychological processes and current models for development of chronic low back pain; b) indicate different ways psychological factors can impact outcomes; and c) propose an integrated model of management called psychologically informed practice. Is there really value in using evidence to make clinical decisions? Presenter – Dr Linda Woodhouse, Department of Physical Therapy, U of A. Linda is an Associate Professor and holder of the Dr. David Magee Endowed Chair in Musculoskeletal Research in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta. This webinar will explore the value of using evidence to build a better health system. Case studies will be used to review how to use data to make decisions on an individual patient basis. These data will be used to highlight the added value that physiotherapists bring to the management of patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Department of Physical Therapy Pursuing Our Best
