FROM THE EDITOR

We are mothers, daughters, girls growing into women, women growing older. We are also women with a voice and influence. We impact those around us by what we do and say. In this issue you will find a mix of women with strong voices that resonate across the waters. They did not get there by only having good things happen to them. They have gotten to where they are with a little adversity sprinkled along the way—some have encountered more adversity than others. Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle. This is life. Somewhere along the way they have found a place on the water that keeps them grounded and connected. We hope that as we share their stories with you, you will be encouraged, challenged and inspired to do the same to those around you. Your strength is in yourself and only you can call it to be.

TIME FOR AN OIL CHANGE?

THE TRUTH ABOUT FAT AND YOUR HEALTH In terms of how we relate to the food we eat, sugar could be viewed as the addictive relationship that we don’t always recognize and have a hard time keeping a healthy distance from. The relationship we have with fats could be called dysfunctional, because it’s completely misunderstood and rooted in lies that have taken a huge toll on our collective health. Decades ago, the food industry needed to make foods more shelf-stable for weeks and months at a time to fill the new supermarket model, as well as all the warehousing and distribution that comes with the way we get our food in modern times. Food scientists refined vegetable oils by removing all of the beneficial fatty acids to extend the time in which nature designed these oils to turn rancid. This is one of the many examples of how man thinks he can outsmart nature’s laws, and how this ignorance can take a toll on our health. Why would we question a slogan like “Cooks who know trust Crisco”? Food engineers created a fat that’s just molecules away from being more like plastic than an actual food, and we bought it without questioning its nutritional value. Fast-forward 50 years and this move refined thousands of food and drink products and their relative fat structures, removing or changing nature’s design and shaping our health for generations to come, and leaving us with oils that “poison” us with toxic compounds that we were never meant to ingest. In the late 1970s, the sugar industry was about to be hit with a government report showing that if we didn’t drastically reduce our sugar consumption soon, disease rates would climb fast. Instead of this getting to the people, the sugar industry squashed the report and came up with a campaign that would protect their interests: “High fat intake is the cause of disease”— mainly saturated fats, they shouted. Not sugar! So let’s remove all fat grams, double the sugar, create fake sugars and call it, “fat free.” The only problem is, when we remove the good dietary fats from our intake, blood sugar goes haywire and diabetes comes in with a force. That is exactly what occurred in the early ’80s and has plagued us ever since. It’s the perfect storm of disease: Refined, toxic vegetable oils with all the healthy parts removed, highly refined sugars and fake artificial sweeteners, combined with a lie that all saturated fats are bad for us.

THE TRUTH ABOUT SATURATED FAT From the first moments in the womb, saturated fats are a vital part of the growth process for brain and bone development. At birth, breast milk and its abundance of saturated fatty acids nourish our healthy, rapid cell growth. As adults, why would we ever turn away from these healthy fatty acids that nourish our brains, bones, hormones and organs? 28

S A M ATA

|

V2N1

The natural design of fat-soluble minerals that drive nutrients into the bones for density is done through saturated fats. We never lose our need for healthy, clean saturated fats as we age. Tradition in India is to place a spoonful of ghee (clarified butter) on an infant’s tongue at birth. The Tibetans have drank “buttered teas” for generations for natural optimal health, bringing clean energy, clarity and balance to their brain, bone and heart health. By 1950 in the U.S., heart disease had become the leading cause of death, and early data pointed to refined vegetable oils as a major contributor. That made the creators of hydrogenated, refined oils anxious to find someone else to blame. In 1960 the American Heart Association (AHA) issued a statement pointing to a correlation between saturated fats and heart disease. Meats, eggs, cheese, butter and tropical oils were highlighted as the culprits, giving the veg-oil leaders someone to blame and smear through the media so they could continue to profit from huge amounts of stripped-down, refined oils used in food production from coast to coast. The “low fat” and “fat free” delusions are still being practiced today with the high consumption of GMO corn, soybean, safflower, cottonseed, canola and other refined, nutritionally void fats that contribute to large growth in brain malfunctions like Alzheimer’s, ADHD, depression and anxiety; as well as diabetes, cancers, heart disease and obesity.

THE SKINNY ON FATS Cholesterol and triglycerides are the two lipids flowing through the blood. Both play vital roles in our health. I like to say that “cholesterol was at the scene of the crime and got blamed for the murder, the term murder referring to heart disease.” A more accurate look shows that cholesterol has a vital role in hormone production and vitamin D regulation, and makes up an essential part of healthy cells. Triglycerides are vital for cell energy production but a spike in these lipids comes from eating too many sugars and foods that increase glucose, mainly dead, starchy carbohydrates like bread, pasta, cereals, sodas, bagels, doughnuts and stripped, refined grains. These elevated triglycerides lead to heart disease, diabetes and obesity in all ages, changing the quality of the highly viscous cholesterol that lubricates

tissues in the joints to the cardiovascular system into a sticky, imbalanced state, causing higher readings of basic tests—not from eating foods with cholesterol, but rather from ingesting consistent amounts of sugars and foods that turn to glucose. The truth is, eating a foundation of healthy fats, staying away from sugars and increasing outdoor exercise so we get sunshine will do far more than medication to regulate blood chemistry and all the side effects, one of which is elevated glucose!

THE GOOD NEWS If we re-establish our intake of the right fats and oils, we obtain their essential fatty acids (what the body cannot make) and other vital fat-soluble nutrients including vitamins A, D, E and K. We gain energy, balance blood chemistry, feel satiated, build immunity, boost joint health, support heart health, build brain health and age much slower if we just eat more healthy fats.

FATS 101: BROKEN DOWN INTO THE BEST CHOICES IN EACH CATEGORY SATURATED FATTY ACIDS

• Grass-fed butter • Ghee • Egg yolk from pastured, organic eggs • Raw dairy milk, cheese, cream, kefir • Plant sources: avocado, coconuts (milk, oil, meat), palm oil POLYUNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS

• Raw nuts and their oils: macadamias, pecans, walnuts, pine nuts, almonds • Seeds and their oils: hemp, pumpkin, chia, sacha inchi, sesame • Wild salmon • Cod liver oil (fermented is best) • Sardines, anchovies, mackerel and other small fish • Krill oil MONOUNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS

• Olives and olive oil • Avocados and avocado oil Always look for organic, unrefined oils and fat sources, as these are the building blocks of new, youthful

cells. A variety of all the fatty acids should be the aim so you get the full range of health benefits. While there are hundreds found in nature, two unsaturated fatty acids are called essential fatty acids, since it’s essential that we get these fats from our food. They are omega-3 and omega-6. When we do, the body can manufacture the other vital fatty acids it needs. This leads to a very important point about the important balance of omega-3 and omega-6. We have gotten too far imbalanced and loaded the scales too heavy on the omega-6 side, to the degree that many of the inflammation states we see in people are fed heavily by the poor, refined, denatured, chemical-treated fats found in canola, soybean, cottonseed, corn and safflower oils, where these high omega-6 fatty acids reside.

THE PROPER HEALTHY RATIO SHOULD BE NO MORE THAN 1:4 (OMEGA-3:OMEGA-6). WE ARE SEEING RATIOS AT 1:25 AND EVEN AS HIGH AS 1:40! Chia seed has the highest omega-3 content from a plant. In my opinion, chia seeds are a better option than flax oils as those are less stable, can be difficult to break down and have estrogenic properties that can mess with hormone balance if consumed regularly, whereas chia doesn’t tend to show these drawbacks. Macadamias and walnuts are the nuts with the highest omega-3 levels; almonds, while healthy as a whole, contain minimal amounts. Hemp seeds contain a good ratio of 3:6:9 fatty acids and easily digested proteins too.

foods and taking an enzyme with your meals to help the process until your system can create more fat-burning microbes as you pull away from sugars. Remember, fats can be slightly acidic, so they combine best with the alkalinity of sea salts, leafy green salads, apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. Ginger, fennel, turmeric and cinnamon all assist in the breakdown of fats as well. Key tip: Don’t heat your olive oil anymore! Drizzle on salads or veggies, but don’t cook with it! Too much heat will turn this amazing oil toxic and denatures the vitamin E. Use ghee or coconut oil for all your higher-heat cooking; your body will thank you!

TAKEAWAY Until we can move beyond the lies about fats and oils and into the truth of what these incredible fatty acids deliver to us, we will never experience the slowing of the aging process we truly desire and the beautifying and balancing effects they have on us when consumed in abundant amounts on a consistent basis. Marine lipids contain solid amounts of omega-3 that build and protect our brain cells, nervous system, eyes, circulatory system and, at the core, keep inflammation at bay. These include salmon, anchovies, mackerel, sardines, krill and the algae rock stars: marine phytoplankton, blue-green algae, spirulina and chlorella.

TIPS

CASI RYNKOWSKI

THE MOST VALUABLE PIECE OF EQUIPMENT FOR SUP CROSS-TRAINING Rower, erg, ergometer… whatever you want to call it, this piece of equipment has worked its way into many exercise routines. And rightfully it should. No other piece of equipment can deliver a low-impact aerobic or anaerobic workout like the erg, all while building strength and endurance. How, you ask? Rowing uses 60 percent leg for the power push, 20 percent back and 20 percent arms, which means you are engaging your calves, quads, hamstrings, glutes, abs, obliques, pecs, biceps, triceps, deltoids, upper back and lats. In fact, 84 percent of the body’s musculature is being used! Depending on your rowing routine, you can focus on long, aerobic, endurance-building sessions; or high-intensity bouts of anaerobic training, which improve muscular strength and power. Besides the physical benefits, rowing is a mental trainer perfect for SUP racers and endurance paddling. Rowing

SET UP FOR ROWING SUCCESS:

ROWING:

Adjust the footpads so that your heels are as high as possible and make sure they are the same height on each side. The straps should go over the bottom of your shoelaces. You need to be able to flex onto the balls of your feet for your push.

1. The Catch: Sit with your knees bent and feet in the stirrups so your shins are nearly perpendicular to the floor. Your heels may lift to achieve this position but your knees should not move forward beyond perpendicular. Fully extend your arms to grab the handle and lean forward so your shoulders come just in front of your hips.

The damper setting should be set between 3 and 5. Too often, athletes think the higher number, the greater the challenge; this is not true. The real challenge is to accelerate at a lower setting, when greater power must be applied. This is similar to what really happens in a typical rowing shell. With a higher damper setting, it’s like rowing a slug of a rowboat. This changes your workout to be more about strength than cardio. Olympic rowers aim for 3-5 on the damper setting. Enough said.

2. The Drive: This is the work portion of the stroke. It can be simplified by breaking the movement into this order: Legs, back, arms. The power of the stroke comes from the push with your legs down through your heels. Once your legs are almost straight, hinge from your hips and lean your torso backward. As your torso reaches a 90-degree angle, begin to pull with your arms by bending at the elbows.

is hard and requires motivation. The monitor keeps you honest every pull and a variety of screen measurements helps you track your improvements. Nothing is more satisfying than seeing split time decrease. In my opinion, this is one piece of equipment every paddler should be using to cross-train. It could change your paddling completely. Just as in paddling, there is a correct way to row. Bad form can lead to back strain and underdevelopment of power and strength. So be sure to get it right! Here are six common rowing errors: 1. Setting the damper to high 2. Rowing with only your arms 3. Mixing up the order of movement 4. Hunching your back 5. Banging your butt into your heels 6. Flaring your arms out to the sides at the finish

3. The Recovery: This is the rest portion that prepares you for the next drive. It is the opposite of the drive movement: arms, back, legs. Once the handle crosses your knees and you hinge forward at your hip, then you can begin to bend your knees to pull forward. RECLINING BUDDHA POSE We know the numerous benefits of meditation have been scientifically proven. Savasana is a short meditation practice that follows most yoga classes. On the water, I have suggested Reclining Buddha pose as an alternate to just lying flat on your back. Yoga isn’t something that you do; it is something that you experience. Yoga is your state of mind in whatever it is that you are doing. At the end of any yoga practice, there is an opportunity to really connect mindfully with nature. All senses are heightened after a practice, especially on the water. The elements that surround you—water, breezes and infinite sky above—are all supporting you. Acknowledging this brings ultimate peace and joy to your practice. Surprisingly, very few people seem to try meditating while lying on their side, even though images of the Buddha doing this are abundant. Lie on your right side. The left arm rests on top of the body. The right elbow rests on the floor, with the hand supporting the head. The knees should be slightly bent. Bend the upper knee a little more than the lower knee so that there isn’t undue pressure between your ankles and between your knees. You’ll need to have a cushion under your right armpit or upper chest, to take some of your body’s weight. The pressure of your hand on your head may cause discomfort, so you’ll probably need to move your hand from time to time. Be aware of the intension to move, and be mindful of the movements themselves. In this position you’re far less likely to fall asleep compared to when you lie on your back and it’s easier to maintain a sense of mental clarity. 32

After you are settled in and comfortable, offer up an intention of gratitude and love for all beings everywhere. Here is one I love to say: “We have gathered for the healing of all of your children. The stone people, the plant people, the four-legged, the two-legged. The ones that fly and the ones that swim in the waters below, all of our relations. Thank you for allowing us to sing the song of life.” Final note: After a while (three to four minutes), you may want to switch sides for a different view and equal neck stretch. TIPS

AMBER SHADWICK

“We are young; we are old but young of heart. We paddle, we surf, we do SUP yoga on the board. We are healthy or striving to be healthy and to make life changes that negate old fears and bring us to a place of balance.” –Samata Magazine

ADVICE FROM THE SEA Be mindful; health is a state of mind. Encouraging a positive attitude and practicing positive thinking can naturally open our beings to greater health and optimism — optimism acknowledged as the humble roots of living a positive and fulfilling life. One of my favorite quotes that simplistically affirms the power of the mind in the now is, “If nothing changes, then nothing changes.” With that being said, be aware that attitudes or perspectives account for a majority of our actions. Having an open and optimistic mind empowers accountability. If we remain accountable for good thoughts, good actions will generally be the result. In the event that a teachable moment, or an event of negative energy, develops, optimism supports something positive being learned. “We can’t stop the waves, but we can learn to surf.” –John Kabat-Zinn Let us continue to make a commitment to view our lives (past, present and future) as powerful, insightful and positive catalysts. Instead of setting daily intentions on restrictive goals—which rapidly become distant, unattained, neglected or discounted—this season, make a commitment to you. Invest in yourself by promising to provoke more positivity on a daily basis. Pause for a moment amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, and simply honor just how far you have come. Then take a deep breath and enthusiastically radiate gratitude for the present moment, your daily opportunity for renewal. Finally, breathe into the appreciation of the ambition that will soon unfold in the journey ahead. By acknowledging the abundance in our lives, we awaken our positive energy flow. By committing to focus on the essentials for happiness we fervently sow self-compassion, joy, respect, efficacy, accomplishment and satisfaction. Understanding that we are creatures desirous of bliss is necessary. Recognizing that our energy flows where our attention goes is dynamic. This season, let’s place our attention on that dynamism. Let’s let go of the past, live more vibrantly in the present, and free ourselves of unnecessary fear by placing trust in the future. Let’s ride the wave and celebrate our “beayoutiful” selves, just as the ocean inspires us to do. Let us appreciate positive flow and the power of now. As a result, we will evolve more blissfully, more nurtured, happier and healthier.

So, this season, STAND-UP, take accountability for YOU. Nourish a renewed and optimistic viewpoint. Change your attitude, change your thoughts and ultimately support your future functionality and sustainability. “If we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.” –Wayne Dyer. Therefore, energize your peace, passion, positivity and balance with these simple steps: 1. Understand that the past does not equal the future. Just because you have experienced disappointment in the past, this does not suggest that everything that starts off badly will end badly. Let go of expectations and fear, for “FEAR” simply means “False Experiences Appearing Real.” 2. View yourself as a cause, not an effect. You don’t have to be a product or a victim of your circumstances. Stop thinking about what is happening to you and start thinking about what you can make happen! If you’re not happy with the way your life is, set some realistic daily goals and create positivity around those desires. Use your past negative experiences as roots. All roots inspire growth. Nurture the idea that we gather better decision-making skills as our journeys unfold.

3. Remember, life involves taking daily risks. Understand and acknowledge that not all of them will end positively. Life is like photography: We develop from the negatives! 4. Affirm to confirm. Use positive affirmations and mantras. Write down short statements that remind you of where your energy flow needs to go. Put these affirmations in places where you’ll see them every day: on your bathroom mirror, the inside of your kitchen cabinet, on your computer monitor or even taped to your shower wall. Some examples are: “Anything is possible,” “I can control my attitude,” “I always have a choice and I choose to live on the positive side of life” and “I am strong.” 5. Keep close to heart that life is short. When you feel pessimism clouding your judgments or actions, remind yourself that every moment counts. Any time spent on the negative guarantees less time enjoying life’s positive gifts, especially the gift called the present. 6. Try to avoid negative energy. If you can’t avoid it, learn how to mindfully detach. Remember you are in control of your emotions, thoughts, actions and reactions. 7. Ultimately, respect the process and progress. Everyone has times of weakness. You may fall seven times, but stand up eight. Finally, take the advice from the sea… “Be shore of yourself. Come out of your shell. Expand your horizon. Don’t get tide down. Let worries drift away. Think big. Live deep.” Shanti, Amber Shadwick Amber Shadwick, owner of FITSIDE, is a national recognized fitness and wellness professional. BUSINESS PROFILE

Founder, Billy Rossin, leading a NOCQUA event tour.

NOCQUA ADVENTURE GEAR:

PADDLING THROUGH THE DARKNESS Over the past two years, more and more paddlers have experienced the coolest trend in paddling, introduced by NOCQUA Adventure Gear. Illuminated night paddling and the thrill that comes with it are now easily accessible because of the innovative, dependable, flexible and easy-to-use underwater lighting systems marketed by the company. Billy Rossini a former professional watersports athlete and noted waterman is the mastermind behind NOCQUA. What began as a curiosity about lighting the way for nighttime paddlers became a full-blown engineering and product development project, something that took over year and on the water testing in Key West. Rossini later met Lee French who became company president who helped propel Nocqua Adventure Gear. A trend was born! The NOCQUA night paddle is in itself an experience. It is an amazing view to see orbs of light coming across the water, especially when there is more than one paddler in a group with the same system. Plus the viewpoint that the paddlers themselves have when on the water with the light coming from beneath the board is breathtaking. One of the unique aspects of NOCQUA’s LED System is that you can get an array of colors besides the standard lighting and it has been designed to easily install and be removed from any SUP or kayak without any permanent alterations to the vessel.

NOQUA is based out North Carolina where we experienced it first hand at a demo night at the Carolina Cup. Reaction of the attendees were one of amazement and and impressed that it is accessible to anybody with a sense of adventure. We see the same reaction where we go. It sparks adventure on the water at night. The system is simple. NOCQUA system—NOCQUA Sport, NOCQUA Spectrum, NOCQUA 2000—comes with everything you need to get out on the water: two durable waterproof LED lighting tracks with adjustable harness; a 12V lithium ion rechargeable battery pack and charger; an in-line switch; a “Y” connecter to power both light bars with one battery; two extension straps; and a carrying case for the system and all components.

The systems are easy to adjust and fit to any board.

All of the systems are plenty bright to light the way. The NOCQUA 2000 boasts 1,000 lumens of white light for each light bar. The NOCQUA Spectrum can be set in seven different colors and three modes, delivering 800 lumens per light bar. And the NOCQUA Sport, even with its compact size, yields 600 lumens in each light bar, for a total of 1,200 lumens. A fully charged battery will provide a minimum of three hours of power (one battery for two light bars) and up to five hours with the NOCQUA Spectrum. The specially designed lithium ion battery is encased in several protective layers for ultimate water-resistance and is designed for 500 charges. The systems are easy to adjust and fit to any board. Simply slide the light bars in or out on the harness to fit about 2 inches from the outer edge of your board. Lay them face down and place your board on top, buckle and tighten. The battery and switch can be connected in two easy steps. Each system comes with easy, illustrated instructions. Dashama Konah Gordan. Her name alone makes her unique. It derives from a Hindu goddess Rajasthan, known as “the land of kings.” Rasthan is the largest state of the Rupublic of India by area. It is no wonder that she has become an international name in the yoga field and is considered an innovator in the area of mind, body and fitness. When did SUP enter your mind and inspire you? I have always loved the ocean and all water. In 2009 when I went out on my first SUP experience, it felt perfectly natural to practice yoga on the board. It was like a huge yoga mat floating on water. I immediately started flowing and we happened to have a waterproof camera with us that day, so we filmed it. That video was the first media online about SUP yoga. It went viral and started this awesome global trend. What was your background with yoga? My parents met Swami Muktanada when he brought yoga to the USA in the ’70s. They taught my sisters and me some yoga early in my childhood. Growing up as a very active, energetic athlete, yoga helped me calm and balance myself. It also helped me deal with some of the challenges of growing up in foster homes and with young people’s cruelty—I was bullied a bit. It also helped me later, in college, after a tragic accident when I was hit by a car on my bicycle; and after some snowboarding accidents. Yoga has always been there to heal me as a good friend and practice when I have needed it. With SUP yoga, what do you feel in terms of the liquid connection, the soul of flowing and balance?

DASHAMA KONAH GORDAN

There is nothing like SUP yoga. It balances my mind, body and soul, while physically challenging me far more than yoga on land. When out on water, stress dissolves and I am reminded of the vast expansiveness of the universe and the world. I feel a deep sense of spiritual connection; the water element makes me feel so comfortable. It just feels like home to me, and that feeling of home is also peace and serenity. SUP yoga also forces you to focus more intently, so it makes you stay present in a very unique and powerful way. That presence is profound and transformational on all levels. Practicing yoga on water always reminds me to stay in the flow of life and to allow the voice within to guide me along my journey.

Growing up, did you ever think one day, you’d feel you had a spiritual tie to the earth, to being who you are today? Yes, I grew up in some very rural and unpopulated areas in small towns and amid the woods, forest, mountains, rivers and lakes. This is a very important part of who I am. That deep connection to Mother Earth is important to who I am and what I do in every way. As a result, I am always called to share the love of nature with others, because I believe it is a key element to help people feel their deepest spiritual connection. That is also a great part of my mission as a yoga teacher, transformational coach and spiritual healer. What was life like during your teen years? I was very active, living in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It was a small town and I was involved in every sport imaginable: running, diving, swimming, softball, volleyball, hiking, rock climbing, boating, wakeboarding, snowboarding, martial arts, dancing, cheerleading and others. Yoga was always there to help balance me and keep my heart open. I would practice in my room at night and out in nature with friends. I was also a geek, so I was in a marketing club called DECA and a public speaking club called Toastmasters, as well as pep club and student council. I was very involved in many communities. Also, I was a big party girl! So I spent most weekends at camping keg parties and often got in trouble. Despite being a 4.0 student and being voted student of the year in college, I was very rebellious and resistant to rules and authority figures. My love of fashion has grown since high school, because back then I had body dysmorphia. Although I was very active and thin, because I had hyperthyroid disease, I always felt fat, so for a period of time I mostly wore baggy jeans and sweatshirts. Yoga has really helped balance me out since then! I feel so much more comfortable and confident with myself, with a deeper sense of peace and acceptance. I’m so grateful.

Where have your travels taken you and how have they inspired you? I have traveled the entire globe since my early childhood. At age 7 my mom took my sisters and me throughout all 50 states of the USA. We also explored Mexico and Belize. Later I moved to South Dakota. In college I studied abroad in Spain for a summer semester, and also backpacked throughout France and Italy. Road trips, both for enjoyment and work, have taken me throughout the mainland and Hawaii. Later I began teaching internationally and taught yoga and SUP yoga in Mexico, Thailand, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Canada and the Virgin Islands. Do you feel your life is different now than it was 20 years ago, or 10 years ago? Yes, in most ways. Twenty years ago I was in middle school and was very insecure and had self-esteem issues. I had a thyroid disease and was trying to find myself and my place in the world. Ten years ago I was in college and changed my major seven times, because I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. But I’m still the same in many ways as well. I have always had a deep respect and love for health, fitness and Mother Nature. I have always been spiritual and felt driven to create and make something of my life that will impact the world in a positive way. I have always felt that God is the greatest power and my guide along the journey. And throughout most of my life, I have felt that love was the most powerful and important thing, although for many years, I didn’t really know what love was, nor did I know what my life purpose was until about 10 years ago, when I became a yoga teacher. Then everything just started to make sense. Now I have a stronger purpose and passion to share this gift, because of how it makes me feel such joy, peace, health, gratitude and awareness. As someone who understands connection mentally and spiritually, do you feel you can inspire others through your life and spirit? Yes, by simply being connected to spirit, I feel I can inspire others to move toward that same experience. I do it all the time; it is a wonderful gift to give and receive joy and vitality through these practices and this lifestyle and philosophy.

What wisdom and inspiration do you give to disconnected souls to help them connect? Yes, most souls feel disconnection from time to time. Some are more disconnected than others; depression and negative habits and actions are the result. It is my life purpose and mission to help however I can: to spread happiness, self-love, spiritual connection and appreciation with as many people as possible. I do that through many ways, and will continue to do this as long as I live. World peace starts with inner peace. I work on myself all the time; it’s the greatest gift I can give the world, to live and lead by example. Is there a specific yoga practice that works best for you on the water? Yes, I have a system that I teach that is part of my school, Pranashama Yoga Institute. There are practices for beginners through advanced practices, and some that people can do as partners and even as kids. There’s something for everyone. What journeys will you be taking over the next three to five years? We are adding new locations to offer yoga teacher trainings and retreats worldwide, including in Australia, South Africa, the Middle East, Europe, China and Japan. Any words of wisdom for women seeking nirvana? Always believe in yourself. Love yourself. Be honest always and focus on the positive in life. There is so much to be grateful for. Let go of any old story that is not serving you and place your attention on what you can do to be of service to make a difference in the world. Let your light shine and surround yourself with good people who love and believe in you. Know that you are more than enough. Take time each day to meditate, practice yoga and connect with nature. Dream big, be creative and never give up!

(YES, SHE CAN!) WHO IS BRITTANY PARKER AND WHERE DID SHE COME FROM? People who know me from my childhood often say, “Brittany, you’ve come a very long way.” I spent my grade school years disappearing into different social circles, a chameleon, never sure of who I was. I grew up in Rifle, a small town in Western Colorado, where camouflage and hunter orange never go out of style. Living there only helped me discover who I wasn’t. It wasn’t until I was introduced to snowboarding that I found something I really connected with. Sunlight Mountain, an hour drive away, was the nearest ski resort, so I’d hop on the bus with my boarding buddies and spend every day off from school on the hill. Once I hit high school, I became less focused on schoolwork and more focused on spinning 360s and throwing front flips. My sophomore year of high school, I decided to home-school. Part of it was because I wanted more time to be on the hill, and the other was because I felt so out of place in high school. I graduated when I was 17 and jumped right into college at Metro State in Denver. At that point in my life, I was more lost than ever. My major was finance, and it was strictly because of the monetary gain in that field, not because I was passionate about it. I hated math and all that business crap. I was wildly unhappy. I hated my major, was in a toxic relationship, and I was living in the city, where I felt so disconnected from everything that makes me feel grounded… the woods, mountains and rivers. Eventually, I switched my major to art with a concentration in photography, and got out of that relationship. My life in Denver lasted only a few years. I left college and moved myself back to the life that made me feel whole… I became a snowboard bum. I lived the typical lifestyle, working in snowboard shops or rentals, enjoying après-ski happy hour and snowboarding every day. But I continued to get injured: I tore my ACL and fractured my tailbone a couple of times. It set me back in my training. It was the summer post-ACL tear that I found standup paddling, and snowboarding became a close second. When did you first get into SUP? Did you start SUP with whitewater? SUP found me while I was working as a raft guide in Glenwood Springs on the Colorado River in 2010. I felt pretty comfortable in whitewater at that point, and I was quick to jump on a board as soon as the opportunity presented itself. My first time down the river on a SUP was through a Class III rapid. I swam most of it but it was the most fun I had ever had on the river. What is the connection you feel on the water? What is the draw? Being on the river or any body of water is cleansing. It sounds cliché, but it washes away your day-today stress. I’ve got a busy mind. I often wake up thinking about my to-do list, and it never seems to go away until I shut my eyes at the end of the day. For that reason, it has always been difficult for me to be totally present in my life. But when I’m on the river, my body and my mind are on the river and flowing with it, 100 percent in the moment. The river doesn’t let you be anywhere else; it demands your attention and respect.

Paddling big whitewater is so exhilarating, and it’s a constant challenge. I know my home stretch of river like the back of my hand, but I can always find new ways to challenge myself, whether it be splatting rocks, acid drops or practicing everything switch. It’s a playground!! Women typically stick to recreational paddling on flat water. What is it you’d like to share about SUPing on whitewater? I think flatwater is more favorable for women because it’s easy, more accessible, and you can easily do solo flatwater paddles. There’s also the fear that the river can breathe into people. Whitewater standup paddling forces you to develop or become part of a community. Because of shuttling logistics and safety it’s best to go out on the river with friends, people you trust. That’s what hooked me for good… the river community is something special. Everyone looks out for each other, and the people tend to be a bit more rugged, with a real grasp of the beauty and benefits of being on the river.

a local, this is my spot and my wave, go back to where you came from” crap doesn’t exist in the river world, in my experience. It’s part of what makes it so special. It’s more of a brotherhood than a territorial battle. What inspired us the most was how many people don’t know that you can surf on rivers. People who live inland and do a surf trip once or twice a year may not realize they could’ve been surfing right in their home state all along. It’s transformed our lives, given us an outlet and introduced us to some beautiful people who are now close, longtime friends. We want to grow the sport in hopes it’ll help with the construction of more whitewater parks around the country and even the world. It’s amazing what a whitewater park can do for a community; I’ve seen town economies drastically improve because of them. It brings people in and brings them together. What inspires you on and off the water? People that are out chasing their dreams and living unconventional lifestyles. Specifically,

What do you do? Sometimes I don’t even know the answer to that. [laughs] I feel like I do so many things. I’m a professional athlete, so I spend a lot of my time training and competing during the summer. But I also teach downriver and river surfing clinics. I’ll be doing a collection of them with my friend Natali Zollinger (also a whitewater paddler and SUP athlete) this spring and summer in Colorado and Utah. We’ll be posting dates soon on my website, brittanyparker.squarespace.com. But outside of paddling, I love writing. Writing has been my passion way before anything else. And I hope to do a lot of freelance stuff as soon as the film is out and we’re finished with our screening tour. Is it dangerous? Whitewater and river surfing? Oh, most definitely! There are so many things that can go wrong on the river and if you’re not prepared and paying attention, or if you don’t have the right gear, you can get seriously hurt, or worse. Every time I paddle Class III rapids I

SOME T I M E S W H E N I ’ M AB O UT TO DR O P I NTO A R API D, I TH I N K , “ T H I S I S F $%KI NG CR AZ Y, I CAN’T B E L I E V E I’ M A B O U T T O T RY TO STAND UP THR O UG H THI S! ” And then there’s the challenge of attempting to paddle through a rapid standing up. You go through so many different emotions and stages of fear. When you conquer that fear and that rapid, the high you get is indescribable and being able to share that with your paddling buddies is the greatest bonding experience you could imagine. It’s so much more stimulating in every way than flat water could ever be for me. Can you tell us about your movie, Can I Surf That? What was the inspiration behind it? Can I Surf That is a film that three other women and I have been working on for over two years now. It’s a documentary about river surfing and our search around the country for bigger and better waves. The film will also highlight the community of river surfers all around the world that are so strongly connected because of their shared love for the river. River surfing is so different compared to surfing in the ocean—not just the dynamics of the water, but the whole mentality. The “I’m

women who are constantly breaking through social barriers built around gender roles. I try to surround myself with those kind of people; I thrive off of them and choose to live my life in the same fashion. How and where do you get started in whitewater? Sign up for a clinic or go out with an experienced paddler who can show you the ropes. Many local whitewater shops and river rafting outfitters are now offering lessons in downriver stand-up paddling. Make sure you also have the right gear: a PFD (life jacket), helmet, shoes and maybe a wetsuit, and if you’re wearing a leash it must have a quick-release mechanism that you attach to your PFD. If you don’t have the gear, you don’t go out. I’d also highly recommend taking a river rescue safety course like Swift Water Rescue. Not only do you want a paddling partner who knows what they’re doing, but they probably want to trust that you’ll be up for the task if they get into trouble out there.

get nervous jitters, even on a run I’ve done a dozen times. Because I respect the river and know the moment you stop being afraid is the moment she’ll take you for a ride and remind you who’s the boss! Looking at some of your pictures, it looks absolutely crazy, wicked, insane. It is all of those things! [laughs] Sometimes when I’m about to drop into a rapid, I think, “This is f$%king crazy, I can’t believe I’m about to try to stand up through this!” It’s always a wild ride. Did you surf before you started SUP? No. I was always fascinated by it and knew it was a matter of time before I gave surfing a shot. But my first time surfing was on a SUP in the river. Now, I’ve surfed on both a SUP and a shortboard… I like them both for their own reasons. One is sometimes better than the other for certain waves.

What was your experience on the water before SUP? Were you a river rafter in the beginning? I was a raft guide for about a year before I started stand-up paddling. Before that my only experience on the river was the occasional raft trip with my friends and the classic float on tubes, consuming large quantities of beer. Do you paddle anything beyond river? Yeah, I’ll paddle just about anything. As long as I’m on a board, I’m the happiest girl in the world. Tell us about your gear. I love my Badfish Stand Up Paddleboards. Badfish makes a lot of boards designed specifically for rivers. I couldn’t imagine paddling anything else. For downriver the 9’ MVP and the inflatable MCIT are my go-to boards. The MVP is epoxy with responsiveness you can only get from a composite board, and I can easily catch and surf waves on the fly while I’m paddling downriver. It barrels through rapids! It’s the most fun I’ve had on a board downriver. And the MCIT is so stable and great for travel.

BRITTANY PARKER IN THE GLENWOOD CANYON WITH THE BADFISH INFLATEABLE MCIT. PHOTO CREDIT: SHELLAY GLATZ

Surfing: I paddle the Badfish 6’11” River Surfer, designed to fit into just about any river wave. It’s small, stable and zippy. I haven’t found a board that’s comparable. Paddle: Werner, Werner, Werner. Not only do they make whitewater-specific paddles (The Session), but they design paddles known as Small Fit. They are made with the female paddler in mind by designing Small Fit shafts and grips to fit those better with smaller hands. The Session is lightweight and designed to take a beating. PFD: Astral YTV. It’s the lightest-weight and most nonrestricting PFD I have ever worn. Drysuit: Level Six Triton. I tend to paddle year-round so a drysuit is a must. The Triton keeps me dry, and the front-entry zip makes it easy to get in; I can zip it up on my own. I layer with the Level Six Super Fuzz fleece top or the Hot Fuzz fleece uni-suit. Shoes: Astral Brewess. It’s comfortable, lightweight and durable. If it’s a cold day, I’ll double up with some neoprene socks.

Leash: Badfish Stand Up Paddle Re’Leash. This is a great option for those that don’t have a quick release on their PFD. I like how quickly it releases versus the built-in PFD quick release. You can just hook it on to an easyto-reach strap on your PFD. Remember, any rope on the river is always dangerous. Even by having a quick-release leash, you are taking a risk. What haven’t you done in SUP that you’d like to explore? I’d like to do long expedition self-supported SUP trips. I love camping and getting lost in nature, away from all the distractions. Expeditions are a time to get really in tune with yourself and your surroundings; it’s a time of growth and real adventure. You can never have enough adventure in your life. RIVER IMMERSION THE APALACHICOLA RIVER is approximately 112 miles long in the state of Florida. Its name comes from the Apalachicola tribe, which once lived it on its banks. This river basin is known as one of the most ecologically diverse natural areas in the southeastern United States. It is home to 127 rare species of plant and animals and hosts more species of amphibians and reptiles than anywhere else in the Northern Hemisphere. The Apalachicola River is currently under assault by four fundamental threats: loss of life-sustaining freshwater, loss of floodplain and wetland habitat, point-source and nonpoint-source pollution, and unrestrained growth and development. This is where Jessica Cichra came in with her Boardworks Surf teammate, Gabriel Gray. Gabriel and his wife, Natalie, are the co-founders of a project called Fight to SOAR (Save Our American Rivers). Jessica shares with us how immersion and going native changed her perspective.

Jessica Cichra is an amazing individual with a background in gym in gymnastics and psychology. She’s drawn to activities involving movement, awareness and helping others lead a better quality of life, which makes wellness training a great fit for her. She has many influences and enjoys exploring a variety of adapted styles and techniques, which led to her creation of Bala Tula (a fusion practice of yoga, Pilates, Budokon, body weight conditioning and stand-up paddleboarding). She specializes in Body Dialogue yoga, alignment and core-stabilization training for functional movement and athletic performance, using these principles as a platform for all modalities of fitness instruction. She also founded and directs paddle races, like the annual Lake Mary Jane Paddle Race, and weekly SUP Yoga & Bala Tula clinics. She also leads international paddleboarding and yoga expeditions in fun and beautiful destinations. In her free time she race SUPs as a rider for Boardworks Surf, Werner Paddles, Local Honey Designs, Maui Jim, Performance Ski & Surf, and Paddle Faster. She is also a proud ambassador for Hinano Tahiti, Indo Board, SUPreme and Prana. Jessica also has a passion to surf, skateboard, marvel at nature and rock out at concerts. I highly recommend an Immersion, where you completely immerse yourself in something positive for at least one week, like a yoga/surf/writing/ music retreat. Get out of your routine, separate from typical responsibilities, detach from the day-to-day and become present. Immersion breeds self-actualization, which is quite an eye-opening, barrier-breaking and powerful experience. The above photo was taken on my River Immersion where I literally drank, slept and breathed the Apalachicola River for seven days. I joined this expedition for the adventure, to support my teammate Gabriel Gray, and because I believe in his mission of the project Fight to Save Our American Rivers. But I left the experience with more than I expected, dropping into my true self, opening up to new perspectives, and discovering a deep appreciation for simplicity and life without distraction. It was an interesting process that really became apparent to me once I left the river. On my drive home to Orlando from Panama City, I found myself listening to break-up music, my heart heavy as I imagined I had left a piece of it floating down that river. I felt depressed for almost a week as I attempted to reintegrate into my “normal” life filled with busyness, multitasking and my computer. I reached out to my river mates, my support team, and found they each felt the same. We were heartbroken to be off the river. That was our home and even though we were only on it for seven days, because we were 100 percent immersed in it, we became a part of it. It was like taking a fish out of water. Fortunately, the way processes naturally work, the next phase came along, which was one of intense reflection. Why had I been so sad? I was never a river person before—why was this affecting me so much? What about my experience had caused this reaction, these emotions? I remembered my best friend and mentor, Janie, telling me pre-trip to make sure that I kept a journal during it. She said, “There’s something about a long camping adventure, seeing the sunrise and sunset every day—it can be a very self-actualizing experience.” I heard her statement, took her advice and kept a journal during the trip, but I was expecting this “self-actualizing experience” to happen to me on the river and I did not feel any major transformation. I thought I had missed out, that maybe that’s for somebody more enlightened than I am.

When I recalled Janie’s prediction, I thought, “Self-actualization, what the hell does that really mean, anyway?” I looked it up: Self-actualization (noun): the process of establishing oneself as a whole person, able to develop one’s abilities and to understand oneself. Ding ding ding! Maybe I had not missed out after all, as this was unmistakably the process I was going through! Reflection turned into revelation. The answers to my questions were rising to the surface and it was becoming clear: Because I had removed external distraction from my life and completely immersed myself for a week in the river experience, I had become used to being wholly present and the mental freedom that comes with being surrounded by nature, as well as the nurturing of soul and peace that comes with it, and a life of simplicity: Wake up, eat, break down camp, paddle, make camp, eat, go to sleep. I had truly connected with this lifestyle because I was mind, body and soul IN it. I realized my depression came from the sudden disruption in this pleasurable state of well-being. Although I returned to a life I was accustomed to, I longed for my life on the river. Gratefully, my mood was quickly turning from negative to positive as I gained clarity, my emotions were validated and had passed through to make room for proactive thinking. Revelation led to reflection of how I can integrate the joyous style of life on the river and my current lifestyle or future scenarios I find myself in. The answers came easily; it’s the implementation that is a challenge, which is why we call this life a “practice.” First, make it a priority to get on the water more often, even when playing “catch-up” with work and responsibility. It’s easy to get sucked into the busyness of business, but I am truly more productive, energized and happy when I put it all aside for a bit to move, get outdoors and paddle! Second, reduce my workload. I tend to take on a lot of projects, which spreads me thin, makes it hard to be fully present in anything, and brings feelings of stress and anxiety. Implementing this is not as easy as “go paddle”; it will take time, creativity and adjustment, but it IS possible to narrow focus and stream efforts to a few areas versus many. Third, make a deeper effort to be present in everyday activities: in conversation, while writing, during yoga, etc. I am a yoga teacher and presence is a big part of what I teach, but it is one of the most challenging personal practices yet. Still, all these aspects of river life can be integrated into everyday life, making my experience ever more enjoyable and freeing. So here I am, a girl who was seeking adventure and ended up with an empowering experience of self-actualization. I left this expedition awakened and knowing that my friends are the greatest gift, a taste of the sweet nectar and authentic substance of this journey of life! I encourage all of you to GO and experience it for yourself.

From the first moment you meet the Baus family, you know they’re driven in the relentless pursuit of fun and happiness. When the opportunity presented itself, it was without a shadow of a doubt that Heather and Jim packed their daughter, Savannah, and their pets (two dogs, two cats and even Mr. Fishy) into their RV and Jeep, along with their boards, and hit the road. Heather told us about their adventures on the road and the bodies of water they explored.

The Baus family, always ready for adventure, about to embark on a 12-mile hike down the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. 62

Stand-up paddling the Colorado River with my 12-year-old daughter was one of the most incredible experiences. Savannah is fearless. What a fantastic day! In the morning, we had to break camp and move to another site, even closer to the river. Schoolwork was done first, and then we went for an epic six-mile run. Savannah accompanied me on her bike. The pathway runs parallel to the Crystal River with gorgeous views of Mount Sopris, elevation 12,995 feet. We passed plenty of other bicyclists and exchanged morning greetings. It was ideal running conditions: cool temps, low humidity and gorgeous views—I love this place! During the run, I studied the Crystal River, shallow and bouldery, running right past our campsite, making for easy put-ins and shuttling. It got me thinking: This would be a great practice run for Savannah on the SUP! It was no effort to get everyone on board with the idea. Wetsuits were donned and boards were loaded! Jim and I took turns shuttling the Jeep up the road a few miles, dropping Savannah in the river. Super fun! We rafted the Colorado the previous day, and I really wanted to try and paddle it. I threw out the suggestion, and Savannah bit hook, line and sinker. Savannah was stoked with the idea, and I was giddy with her enthusiasm and no-fear attitude to do this. Jim put us in just below Shoshone, up river from No Name—that’s really the name of the town. Jim rented a bike from the outfit that took us rafting

last bend, what greeted us takes our breath away. It hadn’t changed. The visual of the Teton Mountain Range is majestic, powerful and breathtaking. Stopping in at the visitors’ center, Savannah attended a Ranger seminar and acquired the coveted State Park Jr. Ranger badge. We hiked a four-mile loop around String Lake. Regardless of the buzz about the grizzlies, we didn’t encounter any. Every direction was just an incredible sight. I had to make an effort not to take thousands of photos and just truly enjoy the raw beauty of these mountains and lakes. After hiking we head back to base camp, where I quickly donned a wetsuit and grabbed the inflatable to do my bucket-list paddle on the Snake River before dark! Savannah and Jim dropped me about five miles upstream. Savannah didn’t accompany me on this run for safety reasons; unless I have run the river first, I don’t feel comfortable letting Savannah go with me. It was a super-epic, fun and very fast stretch of moving water, I averaged 7:50- to 8:30-minute miles the entire way. Rapids were smaller than the Colorado stretch, but let me tell you, that water was moving! There were tons of bumps. The adventure factor was way up there, as I was paddling alone in the wildness and through personally uncharted waters. I didn’t see any wildlife other than the abundant trout running, and a dude playing guitar on one of the banks. I arrived at base

“...thinking of how traditions are passed down from generation to generation. I think of Savannah doing the same with her family in the future.” the previous day and hit the trail that ran along the Colorado River to find us. Savannah was confident, and I have confidence in her navigating the waters, which made it less worrisome. Towering canyons, trains and trails made for some surreal paddling. The river is swift and a few areas have Class II rapids. I let Savannah go in front so she could say she navigated on her own. Savannah informed me that SUPing rapids in a river was “way better” than surfing; she wants to move to Colorado.

***

On the road, we still have to maintain online schooling. We found a Starbucks in Jackson Hole and utilized their free Wi-Fi. Savannah completed her online checkpoints and virtual classes while sipping on a Caramel Frappuccino while I updated my blog. Jim made numerous conference calls, pacing wood-lined sidewalks of the Jackson Hole Square. We even managed to navigate the town and get and mail Gramma’s birthday present. Phew! With that, we packed and headed for the Grand Tetons. It’s been years since Jim and I have been here; rounding the

camp just before dusk and was stoked to see Savannah fishing and Jim enjoying some quiet time on the banks with a cold one.

At Glacier National Park, we opted to stay in a firstclass campground (KOA West) that has personal landscaping for each site, patio furniture, grills and seating around the individual fire pits. I’m not even sure if this is considered camping. However, we had decent Internet, which is key since Savannah has virtual classes every Tuesday and Thursday morning. Sitting in the heart of Glacier National Park on a Tuesday for seven hours with gorgeous weather doing schoolwork at the campsite was pushing my personal discipline limitations. No sooner is Savannah’s schoolwork completed that we hit the Jeep to go exploring, faster than a bolt of lightning! As luck would have it, we connected with a rafting outfit. It was just a few miles down the road, and we asked if it was too late to rent a two-man ducky and get a shuttle down the Middle Fork Flathead River. I told them I was going to go on my standup paddleboard, and they looked

at me like I was crazy, but they said yes, with the stipulation that they wanted photos of the SUP portion. The river was lower, but still running swiftly with plenty of water for some solid Class IIs and lighter IIIs during this nine-mile stretch of pure, sheer beauty. They informed us we had just 30 minutes to get back before the cutoff for the shuttle, motivating us to haul butt back to the campsite and don the wetsuits, life jackets, booties and gear. We hit the river just before 4 p.m. The scenery was picturesque with the warm colors of the sun on the mountains. The color of the water could compare to the most incredible turquoises of the Caribbean islands. The river was exceptionally clear and a cool 52 degrees of glacier-fed refreshment! The first stretch was mild flatwater with small rapids and swiftly running waters going across a kaleidoscope of rocks beneath us: an absolute show of earth and water at their finest. About a quarter of the way into the river, we started seeing some significant drops in elevation, which is sure to make a fun section of rapids. Most were readily navigable and fast-moving, deep rapids. I initially went first then would pop out at the nearest eddy to film Savannah and Jim following in the ducky. Further down the river the class Is were quickly graduating to IIs and light IIIs, which certainly got my attention since I didn’t know the river. The sun was in my eyes and I had to pay attention — it was tough to read until you were right on top of where you needed to be (or needed not to be)! I ate it on one boulder drop, but it was exhilarating. All I could do was laugh and then watch Savannah and Jim do the same. We hit a few more solid rapids that I managed to stay up on, turning in on one eddy to film. It was so strong, it threw me right off the board. Despite the 5mm wetsuit, the water was still extremely cold. After more than two hours, my body temperature was dropping as quickly as the ambient air in the mountain shadows. Arriving after 6 p.m., after 9.3 miles of paddling, it was a welcome sight to see our smiling shuttle guy. He was stoked, as were we. On the next day we clean house (or RV, rather). We hit the road. What was supposed to take two hours to get from West Glacier to East, took a little longer due to all the photo opportunities. We were driving on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, a narrow, two-lane road navigating along the canyon rim. This engineering marvel spans 50 miles through the park’s wild interior. It winds around mountainsides, treating visitors to some of the best sights in northwest Montana. We stopped to enjoy a delicious bison burger at the historical St. Mary’s Lodge. We had to burn off lunch and decide to backtrack through the mountains for some hiking. As soon as we re-entered the park we finally got to see our first bear sighting: a mama bear and cub. I was hanging out the window with my camera like a true, full-on Florida tourist! We hiked along the Lunch Creek trail and ran into a few other hikers. It was impressive with the erratic boulders, small waterfalls, lichens and moss along the small pools

of crystal-clear water. The trail took us in and out of the forest along the creek, but once we reached the top of the waterfall of the creek, the trail stopped. I couldn’t resist not going farther and climbing the rocky, 20-foot boulder wall. After ascending the wall, we continued our near-vertical climb hand-over-foot on loose terrain until we reached the first glacier. Over the ridge were two mountain goats that kept us in their sights as they continued their pre-winter calorie intake of alpine grasses. We had a wonderful up-close mountain goat encounter near the vistors’ center, which was unfortunately closed for the day. The goat and her baby walked right by us on the path. The goats seemed very tame and used to overly excited tourists and their cameras. We encountered more black bears. They are hard to miss because of the pile of cars stopped on the road, like a train wreck, with everyone out of their cars filming and taking photos. Note to tourists: You are supposed to give bears 100 yards of space (the length of a football field). All other animals get 25 yards.

Our drive from Banff to Jasper takes longer than expected; due to landslides and mountain driving, we arrive late in the day. Our sights have included the Athabasca Glacier and the Columbia Icefield. Jim visited back in 1982, and it was shocking to see that the Athabasca Glacier had lost more than 60 percent of its volume. The glacier moraines are impressive regardless. Along with the beauty and sheer power of the falls, steep canyon-like formations and impressive potholes, there were many signs of how dangerous these falls of Athabasca are. Lining the paths are numerous benches with memorial plaques of young people who have fallen victim because of their carelessness. Warnings everywhere note that every couple of years, someone dies at Athabasca Falls. Park staff search for and rescue people who fall into the canyon. However, it was not a deterrent, as we saw tourists defying the warnings to “get that photo.” Savannah was intrigued and moved by the signs, and grew a little nervous in the parks. We remind her that these signs are meant for the “city life” tourist and that her sailing adventures are scarier than observing behind a barricade! I can’t help but grow melancholy from our amazing adventures, especially when I hear Jim recollect his story about a similar trip he took with his family 30 years ago. I think of how traditions are passed down from generation to generation. I think of Savannah doing the same with her family in the future. Our last stop in Jasper is the much-anticipated Lake Maligne, which was a bit of letdown. With gray skies and white caps on the lake, we decide to leave the SUPs on the roof of the Jeep. I have done my share of paddling in these conditions, and I had no complaints about not getting on the water. We pulled off into a picnic area near Medicine Lake, made lunch and unloaded the SUPs. What a cool area to paddle. The lake was receding with a turquoise

maze of paths surrounded by mud flats and trout fishermen. The lake has an interesting history. Medicine Lake is a geologic anomaly. It is not in fact a lake but rather an area in which the Maligne River (flowing from Maligne Lake into the Athabasca River) backs up and suddenly disappears underground. During the summer months during intensified meltwater runoff, the lake (which is a meandering frozen river during the winter months) fills to levels that fluctuate over time with the runoff events. The underground system is extensive and during the 1970s researchers used a biodegradable dye to determine the underground river’s extent. The dye showed up in many of the lakes and rivers in the area, and it became clear that the underground system was one of the most extensive in the world.

Brown’s Bay was another of our destinations on this trip. It’s safe to say if you’re looking for that get-awayfrom-it-all vacation with an on-site marina, restaurant, fishing charters, cabins and spectacular view, this is it. Brown’s Bay Resort and Marina in Vancouver Island, British Columbia, is fantastic. Mornings with a coffee or tea, just gazing out at the ever-changing Discovery Passage with her tides, fog and fishing boats, is mesmerizing in the early morning first light. The water itself is beautiful and clear. I couldn’t wait

much as we liked to watch them. Savannah was able to feed a seal some anchovies by hand. The marina restaurant sits in a bay over a hundred feet deep protected by foam-filled, ex-railroad containers for the breakwater. Humpback whales come in to say hello, and killer whales are not far behind. The Narrows Floating Restaurant is fantastic. Fabulous food! We took a half-day salmon fishing charter. We had some big bites and an entertaining captain. As the sun was setting with temperatures dropping quickly, Savannah finally landed a 10-pound coho salmon. She has been dreaming of catching a salmon the entire trip. Of course, we were hoping for more of a catch, but just seeing Savannah’s face reeling in that bad boy was worth every fish we didn’t catch! After Savannah’s big catch, a beautiful bald eagle swooped down next to the boat and took some baitfish right before our eyes. Relaxing is really not part of my vocabulary, but at this resort, I enjoyed mornings of coffee and just surveying the surroundings.

Time flies when you’re having fun. We’re trying our best to not be on a schedule but time is flying by faster than we can log the miles. Our final day at Brown’s Bay, Savannah and I go exploring together on our paddleboards. We surprise two deer that appear

“Time flies when you’re having fun. We’re trying our best to not be on a schedule but time is flying by faster than we can log the miles.” to drop in a paddleboard. I don’t recommend paddling as a novice in these mysterious waters. I was wearing a PFD as the bay appeared to be docile and calm, but honestly, it was some of the trickier paddling I’ve done. The water turmoil that you could not see would yank your board almost out from underneath your feet. Tides drop significantly in the Northwest Passages, and currents run 15 knots-plus during tides. There are whirlpools that have sunk 30-foot sailboats. I paddled four miles in two hours; normally this would take around 45 minutes. While out in the bay I was greeted by a large sea lion, who thankfully did not want a ride on the board, but did stay with me for about a mile. The visibility of the water is more than 30 feet and just magical. The kelp in the shallower areas appears as a single arm coming up to the surface with a massive bow of ribbon or mermaid-looking hair, flowing away from the current. The water is very cold, about 12 Celsius, but apparently it’s some of the best diving around. On the next visit, I’m bringing a dry suit and going for a swim with the seals. Seals are great if you ever need an instant smile. They have made their home in the marina and are beautiful, mischievous and friendly. I believe they loved to be watched as

to be stranded on a small island, but they promptly swim to shore. We observed the seals observing us and investigate sea kelp. The tide was ebbing as we paddled in the mist, and light rain fell on the peaceful, cold, clear waters. The following afternoon we were able to go fishing with our awesome guide, Bruce, with whom we took a fishing charter a few days prior when Savannah caught her 10-pound Coho. Bruce owns White Wolf Charters and invites Savannah to go river salmon fishing with his son. We rallied at the last minute to take advantage of the awesome opportunity, and Savannah landed two salmon on the fly rod. We say our final goodbyes and on the drive we make inquiries about the ferry schedule and campground availability. Everything was booked in the Victoria area; if we didn’t delay, we could catch the ferry out of Victoria that same day. We were the last ones on the ferry and also occupied the last space to accommodate our RV with a tow behind. We ended up spending the night just outside of Port Angeles upon debarking the ferry and clearing customs. We had planned to explore Olympic National Park via the Jeep and base camp in Port Angeles. Later we decided to

hit the area in the RV towing the Jeep, so we don’t have to backtrack. Olympic National Park is vast, so we decided to wing it with no agenda and see what we found based on our little map of trails, lakes and waterfalls. Our first stop, Crescent Lake, is a 600-foot-deep, crystal-clear lake carved by glaciers. We took one of our first flatwater cruising paddles of the trip. Savannah and I rode tandem. Jim takes off, either like he wanted a good workout or he wanted to be as far away from us girls as could be. Savannah and I chose to cross the lake to see what was on the other side. The lake had incredible visibility with hues of blue and turquoise. On the other side of the lake, an old railroad track bed had been converted into a trail, according to the runners who stopped to give their morning greetings when I asked them about the trail. Returning to solid ground, we loaded up the boards. Driving along the lake, we spot a boat ramp, campground signs, and the trail we paddled upon earlier.

Upon entering the campground, our jaws dropped at the sheer beauty of this primitive, magical little forest adorned with dark pines, ferns, moss and boulders. The combination of the light filtering through the landscape and the turquoise color of the lake through the trees was utterly breathtaking and gorgeous. Truly beautiful. Camping here was incredible: cedar-burning campfires, moon rising over the lake, delicious dinner and Savannah entertaining us with her guitar talents. We eventually arrived at the Cascade Locks with the idea of exploring Mount Hood and Multnomah Falls, and sneaking in a Columbia Gorge River paddle. However, after having a night-long experience with the Pacific Union Train, we decided to spend the next night elsewhere. It’s one thing to be awoken by a train, but it’s an entirely different story to have heart failure every time the train blasted its horn 20 feet from your pillow! Over coffee and discussions of our train affair, we sorted out a new plan. We decided to push through Oregon without “passing go,” going nonstop 13 hours later to our friends Eric and Tehyla

in Auburn, California. We figured everything we could do in Oregon, we could do in Auburn and Lake Tahoe with friends. Long stretches of driving sound good in theory. We crossed over several mountains, forests, lakes and rivers. We stopped at a very cool bakery run by a family that owns and operates farm-to-table. It was an absolutely delicious treat! We arrived in Auburn just before midnight. This was our last official stop before we embarked on our travel home. At times it has been crazy, but it has always been a relentless pursuit of fun and happiness. Nothing can compare.

HIGH ASPECT Flat-water/Race

A well balanced blade design with a medium dihedral providing great stability and good power. Available in five sizes tailored to different power needs and designed as a multipurpose paddle for waves, flat water and racing. It is our most popular blade range due to its versatility and light feel. Sean Poynter, Izzi Gomez and Zane Schweitzer’s choice for wave riding.

A longer, narrower blade with a flatter profile, which combines efficient power delivery with a forgiving feel, perfect for racing, the choice of champions. The High Aspect blade is designed with narrow outline, reduced blade angle and modified foil profile. The shape offers less resistance per stroke for a similar size blade, resulting in better thrust and higher speed over distance. It provides more power for less effort and is much less fatiguing over distance than many traditional teardrop shaped blades. Connor Baxter’s choice for racing. RIVIERA “BUMP” 8 & 8.5

The EJ Series carbon fiber paddles have been developed over the last six years with substantial shaping and testing by SUP veteran EJ Johnson. Here are some of our favorites featuring laid carbon fiber, an ergonomic handle covered in EVA foam, round shaft and customizable length.

Designed by one of the first SUP racers on the West Coast, EJ Johnson, these performance carbon fiber race paddles have been proved fast by elite racers such as EJ Johnson, Andrew Logreco and Ingo Rademacher. Carbon fiber construction, dihedral running down the power side and a single concave at the tip on the top make for a solid plant and fast release. Comes in three blades sizes (85, 95 and 105 square inches).

The “BUMP” features the same blade shape and shaft as our Vantage series only the “BUMP” has a carbon fiber weave added around the shaft, giving it a bumpy feel for added grip. Now standard with our “Chokehold” extended ergo handle, paddlers can choke down to amplify torque to their stroke. The “BUMP” paddle has a wet sand finished to add even more grip, save weight, and give it a stealth look.

Instead of wine, indulge in B-LOVELY’s resveratrol, which comes from Japanese Fleece Flower, one of the world’s most concentrated sources of this wonder-compound. Support: Alpha linolenic acid is hard to pronounce but may help the dermis to repair damaged collagen. B-LOVELY gets its ALA from flax seeds.
